The house stays largely unaltered from the time when Charles lived there and is open to the public for special events and gatherings. Writers, musicians and performers stay in the house regularly, and we have welcomed an esteemed guest list of creatives and public figures including Andrew Motion, Frank Skinner, Rowan Williams, Roger Mcgough, Alyson Hallett, Jen Hadfield, Lord Lieutenants and MPS.

Michelle Szobody is a British-American poet and translator with an interest in marginalisation in literature and in how the canon might be renegotiated to promote inclusivity and ecology. Her work has been published on both sides of the Atlantic, was shortlisted for the Bridport Prize in the UK, and has won an IPPY award in the US. She is also an Arts Council England grant recipient and a PhD candidate in creative writing at the University of Bristol.

Tim Craven is a poet based in Edinburgh. His debut collection, Good Sons (Blue Diode Press, 2025), won the Scottish National Book Award for a Debut Poetry Collection and was Highly Commended in the Forward Poetry Prizes. Originally from Stoke-on-Trent, he holds an MFA from Syracuse University and a PhD from the University of Edinburgh, where his research focused on the representation of mental illness in confessional poetry.

Lucy Beckley is a published writer and poet, creative writing facilitator, workshop leader and community builder based in Cornwall. Her poetry has been published in a wide range of magazines and anthologies and recognised in several national competitions. She has an MA in European Cultures, an MA in Professional Writing and a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching Creative Writing. Her work often explores the extraordinary in the ordinary, and she is deeply passionate about opening up access to the arts. She regularly runs workshops for adults, children, and organisations and loves to support others to find the joy and magic in writing and unlock their creative potential.

Olive Mills is a Cornish writer and poet working at the intersections of landscape, ritual, and the sacred body. Her work appears in Seedlings, Thread Lit Mag, and Nowhere Girl Collective. She is based in Falmouth while currently studying for an MSt in Creative Writing at the University of Cambridge.

Anna Chorlton writes in the Cornish wilds. She is the author of the Cornish Folk Tales of Place series, The History Press (spring, 2019), (spring, 2025). Her poetry was published in Atlanta Review (summer, 2020), Wild Court (winter, 2021, autumn 2024), Indigo Dreams (winter 2022), Ice Floe Press (summer, 2022), Ink Sweat and Tears (summer 2022 and winter 2024), Seaborne Magazine (summer 2022), Skylight 47 (Autumn, 2022), King River Press (summer, 2023) and Black Bough Poems (winter, 2025). Anna wrote the animation scripts for the Cornish Folklore project Mazed. She is a member of Liskeard Poets and the German Stanza.

Clare Mulley is a poet, performer, and Old Norse scholar. She started her career as a Christopher Tower summer school participant and a mentee of the London Laureate scheme through Spread the Word, and has since gone on to lead poetry and creative writing workshops across the UK and beyond. She has worked with the National Literacy Trust, StAnza, the Scottish Creative Writing Centre, Historic Royal Palaces, Westminster Lions, and the Wallace Collection, among other institutions, and held residencies with the UK Battlefields Trust and Arctic Circle in Svalbard. She is now a stipendiary lecturer in Medieval English Literature at St. Edmund Hall, Oxford, and leads poetry workshops at sacred historic spaces (most recently Whitby Abbey and Stonehenge) on behalf of Oxford University and English Heritage. Her performance project, a staged version of the Eddic poem Völuspá, has toured in the UK and Denmark, and her work has appeared in The Times Literary Supplement, Poetry Salzburg, The Spectator, Vanguard 14, and The Skinny.

Tom Nutting (he/they) is a writer and psychiatrist from Bristol, UK. He writes on queer ecologies, activism, and mental illness. He has recently completed an MA in Creative Writing at Oxford University, where he was shortlisted for the Starkie Prize. He won the Lisa Thomas prize, and his writing has appeared in Magma, The Stinging Fly, fourteen poems, ORB, Blue Bottle Journal, The Hopper, and elsewhere.

Lizzy Lister is a Cornish poet, writer, and musician with a long-standing passion for the environment. Her accolades include second prize for Amnesty International’s Poetry for Social Justice, second prize for the Aryamati Poetry for Peace Pamphlet and winner of the SaveAsWriters fiction prize. She has been published in a number of books and magazines and was a finalist in Glastonbury Festival’s 2025 Grand Slam Poetry Competition.

Becky May is a Manchester-based poet and holds an MA in Creative Writing from Manchester Metropolitan University. She works as a Poet Mentor for the Comino Project in partnership with Manchester Poetry Library, supporting Poets in Residence to deliver workshops within secondary school settings. In addition, she facilitates workshops in community settings in both poetry and fiction. Becky loves finding community through writing and can often be found at spoken word nights, poetry festivals, and workshops. In October 2024, she joined the team at Verbose, Manchester’s longest-running spoken word night. She has also been a judge for three local competitions, most recently the Manchester Cathedral Poetry Competition. Her work has appeared in PN Review, 14 Magazine and Propel Magazine, amongst others.

Chloé Eathorneis a Cornish poet and soundscape artist whose work explores the intersections of land, body, and memory. She recently completed an MA in Professional Writing at Falmouth University and is a member of the Southbank Centre New Poets Collective (2025–27). The first is a historic programme originally transmitted for the Region by BBC Southwest in December 1983. It is a staging of “The Gift of a Lamb” , Charles’ verse-play, dramatised by a local young cast. They even informed us that Charles personally attended the auditions at the BBC Plymouth studio! The Charles Causley Trust is excited to announce 4 residency opportunities at the former home of Cornish poet, Charles Causley, Cyprus Well, in Launceston, Cornwall.  We are seeking 4 emerging poets whose hearts lie in community engagement and the power of poetry to change lives. Applications are open to poets anywhere, except for the Creative Kernow residency.

The programme is generously supported by the Fenton Arts Trust and is running in partnership with The National Centre for Writing. Each residency will align with 1 of 4 fabulous Cornish and national organisations – Creative Kernow Associates, Guillemot Press, Literacy Pirates and Cornwall Climate Care.

This one-week Spring residency forms part of our wider residency and mentoring programme and has the potential to connect the resident with the 2026 Launceston Poetry Festival (1-3 May 2026). The residencies provide accommodation in Cyprus Well, the space to work alongside the residency partner and a chance to share your work in the local community. Previous residents have included Jen Hadfield, Rowan Williams, Anthony Capildeo, Katrina Naomi, David Devanny, Rachel Piercey, Jim Causley, Alyson Hallett, Isabel Galleymore, Tommy Sissons and Cahal Dallat.

Residency Period:

One week to be taken between 2 February and 27  March 2026. There is flexibility to use Cyprus Well on a daily basis (not staying overnight) if the resident lives locally, or close to Launceston.

Fee/Stipend:

£750 in total with accommodation and utilities included. The fee will be paid in two instalments. The first invoice of £375 should be invoiced to the Trust prior to the residency, and the second of £375 should be invoiced to the Trust on completion of the residency and all work related to the residency.
