Recently, a new phenomenon has started to plague many social media platforms where a once-beloved celebrity becomes the target of vitriolic hate after revealing a personal opinion or taking a controversial political stance. Justified or not, this hate can get lost in translation and begin to feel like virtue signaling.

Instead of reflecting true commitment to a cause, people only mention it to appear virtuous or gain approval from others, or to boost another celebrity they like because that celebrity holds more widely accepted beliefs. 

The fifth and final season of “Stranger Things” has finished airing on Netflix, and while the season was met with praise by the general audience, it was also met with scrutiny by fans on social media. Many people criticized the season’s acting, writing, and overall feel, claiming that it was the worst season of the show, almost rivaling that of the hatred toward the ending of “Game of Thrones.” 

But no one faced the same amount of hate as Noah Schnapp during the show’s episode release schedules. He was mocked by watchers and many viewers who are fans of his character, Will Byers, found themselves increasingly harassed and labeled as Zionists. But the same people attacking Schnapp and his fans also simultaneously support shows that feature individuals with the same views as Noah Schnapp.  

Schnapp’s decline in popularity began following the Oct. 7, 2025, attack in Israel. Schnapp posted a statement on Instagram saying anyone that was pro-Hamas should be ashamed. He was heavily criticized for his stance on the conflict, but this criticism would then grow into personal attacks, including insults about his appearance. 

This has led people to question whether public shaming is performative, used to create a “gotcha moment” in online arguments rather than to show genuine concern for social causes they claim to support. Many people have pointed out that these accounts attacking celebrities or other public figures have little too no posts about real-world problems, bringing them up only when they want to take down someone or something they dislike. This, in turn, reduces the social issue to a weapon and ignores the real tragedy behind it. 

“It feels performative because rather than trying to bring more awareness to the cause or doing something to actively help it, like donating or protesting, you’re trivializing it by treating it as a weapon to use whenever you want to make yourself look better,” said Nathalie West, a senior. “This is especially seen in debates pertaining to stan culture.” 

X user @frustratedbyers who is from Palestine expressed her anger after having the conflict in her country used in a “Stranger Things” shipping debate about Will Byers (Schnapp) and Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard), since she preferred the two characters as a couple. She wrote, “did will byers and mike wheeler travel to tel aviv post epilogue and i wasn’t aware?…don’t tell me how to support my own country” [sic]. It’s this type of behavior that takes away from the seriousness of such sensitive topics as people begin to blur the suffering of others and turn it into a joke used to mock someone.  

Odessa A’ Zion, the unknown rising star from “Marty Supreme,” also became the target of online scrutiny after many users began claiming she was purposely trying to look racially ambiguous. This was further exacerbated when she was set to star as the lead in a film adaptation of a book called “Deep Cuts,” where the main character is of Mexican heritage, but the people working on it were willing to rewrite that part of the character. Because of this, all her detractors said that this proved their point. 

Following this pile of hate, A’Zion quickly made an Instagram story saying that she would withdraw from the project out of respect for what people wanted. Despite that, many users continued to attack her, saying that she still accepted the role and deserved the backlash she got. On Jan. 29, the day A’Zion announced she was no longer playing the role, X user @glindaupland posted, “So y’all were angry when she took the role and now y’all are angry when she does what you wanted let’s be honest y’all are just looking for reasons to hate her” [sic]. 

“I think this happens because people base their opinions on social media posts and constantly seek attention,” said Ashley Alegre, a senior. “It feels performative because you don’t understand the issue at hand and you’re minimizing the situation by using it as a weapon for a celebrity you don’t like.” 

Blake Lively, Hudson Williams, Ariana Grande, and Cynthia Erivo are also examples of celebrities that have become despised. And once they became the internet’s next subject for “cruelty of the month,” often for disputable reasons, they found themselves endlessly mocked and insulted.  

As these hate campaigns spread, the original issues become blurred, and the attacks become personal. This phenomenon has turned into a constant cycle that keeps repeating itself. The societal concerns being thrown around have real meanings behind them, but as this cycle continues, they become buzzwords that undermine real-world problems.  

Have television shows lost their spark? At one time, television shows were able to tell long lasting stories that connected with the hearts of viewers in a way that films couldn’t due to their limited runtimes. But now, TV shows have to fight an uphill battle to attract viewers before either getting cancelled or collapsing in on themselves. 

Here are the top 5 trends that have started to plague the industry and cause the demise of high-quality television. 

 1.   Long Wait Times Between Seasons  

Seasons between shows used to be quick, with most shows coming back every few months to every year. “Six Feet Under” is a show that had its seasons released yearly from 2001-2005, but now many TV shows have started to push the boundaries of how long a wait time is acceptable.  

“Stranger Things” is the perfect example of this. While the show didn’t create the idea of extremely delayed seasons, it popularized it, and many shows have started following in its footsteps. Season five of the show came out three years after season four. 

2.   8 Episode Seasons Becoming the Norm

Viewers are waiting half a decade just for fewer episodes for each season. “Euphoria” is another dramatic example of a show pushing the boundaries as it only had 18 episodes in total despite its first season coming out 7 years ago. 

Eight-episode seasons force TV shows to fill each episode with as much content as possible, meaning each episode feels like it’s trying its hardest to force the story to continue as much as possible. This does not allow the show to slow down and give time for the characters to develop. 

Jam-packing so much content into one episode also causes episodes to be extremely long, five out 8 episodes from “Euphoria” season 2 were an hour long, these long runtimes may cause more damage as most people will feel as though it’d be too much of a commitment to sit through.  

 3.  AI being used to write shows  

One of the best things about writing is being able to create characters the resonate with people that leaves an impact on TV history forever, which is something that Ai can never replicate.  

Following the release of the “One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5” documentary, many people started picking apart weird writing choices and calling out dialogue that made no sense for the universe. But the one thing that was the most talked about was the usage of ChatGPT during a scene in which one of the Duffer brothers was shown on a laptop typing up the script. Viewers are concerned that the use of AI means most shows will lose the emotional impact that they used to have because AI cannot grasp concepts and ideas the same way a person can.  

“Six Feet Under” is a show about death and grief that is widely known for the impact the shows finale episode leaves on the viewer, which would not have had the same impact with the usage of Ai because Ai does not understand human emotion. The idea of the show came after the creator lost his sister. 

 4.  Prioritizing Fan Service over Real Writing 

Fan culture’s effects can be felt when a show actively ruins itself to please its general fans. Fan service is the act of a tv show sideling its best or most engaging plot lines to up lift characters that are popular with the general audience.  

“Stranger Things” sidelined the Byers family after the first two seasons were extremely centered around them to uplift Eleven and her relationship Mike and because of this many people sight season 3 as the reason why the show saw a decrease in quality. 

“Euphoria” season 3 is facing a lot of criticisms for sidling Jules, who had as much screentime as Rue in the first two seasons, to push Cassie to the center despite the fact that she is one of the most hated characters on the show. 

“The Walking Dead” avoided killing off popular characters, which ruined the experience for viewers as it breaks any amount of tension and feeling of consequence that the show had.  

5.   All Episodes Being Released All Together  

One of the biggest causes of T.V. shows losing their popularity is the mass release of episodes rather than airing them weekly. Netflix has been constantly criticized for dropping every episode of a show when it comes out.  

The reason a show like “Euphoria” was able to amass such a large audience was because of the way many online users posted their reactions to the show in real time every time a new episode aired. It helped to create a sense of community around the show which only grew bigger after season 2.  

On the opposite side, “Stranger Things” could not build that same community as every episode dropping at once meant people would not be able to go online without encountering spoilers. If you were someone who didn’t immediately binge the show, by the time you were finished, many people would have already moved onto something else. 

TV shows aren’t going anywhere anytime soon, but these problems have become so prevalent and noticeable that viewers have become tired of it and are making it known. If any TV show creator wants to make sure their show is successful, then I would try to avoid making any of these mistakes.

Looking for a place to enjoy a well-deserved sweet treat? Guests are met with cheerful and helpful staff. As if it couldn’t get any better, comfy seating is available allowing guests to sit back and relax for as long as they wish. 

This place has your name written all over it, especially if you’re a mango lover. According to Grace N on Yelp, the atmosphere is amazing and refreshing with a great selection of drinks and desserts.

#3 Catpurrcinos 

The most purrfect cafe for cat lovers! As you walk in, you’ll notice the Cats are in a separate room from the eating area with a glass window to admire the cats while munching on your desserts. Upon entering the cat room, the staff informs you about which cats are friendly and those who are less welcoming.  

This hidden treasure is only $15 for a whole hour of happiness! It is recommended to sign up for later time slots to avoid crowds and kids. You can tell that the staff love their job and that cats are well taken care of in their new home eagerly waiting to be adopted. According to Sylvia K on Yelp, you’ll have a meowvelous time at this cafe.  

#4 The Hidden Oak Café 

Sometimes taking a sip on your nice fresh beverage while being hit by a gentle breeze is all you need.  Nestled inside the Bayard Cutting Arboretum, this cafe blesses its guests with a beautiful atmosphere and a nice professional service.  

They also have reasonable prices amongst their wide range of selections for teas and snacks. It is recommended to bring 2-4 people with a reservation Jenna Z shared on her Yelp review. 

#5 My Towns Cafe 

It may not be in your town, but My Towns café is welcome to everyone! Along with their wonderfully kind owners, they offer free Wi-Fi so you can share the amazing experience online.  

If you’re a picky eater, not to worry, they offer diverse options for desserts and beverages. You’re met with beautiful comfy décor, allowing this to be the perfect place to get work done.  

But, if you’re there to have some fun, this place offers open mic nights on Fridays. Whatever mood you’re in, this place can match your energy according to Bailie Lohman’s google review. 

Of course, there are many more cafes that can catch your eye; however, these cafes make you feel at home. They put your mind at ease when reaching for your wallet. Instead of spending ten dollars on a single drink for Starbucks, you’re paying for the cozy, comfortable experience that your local Starbucks could never offer.
