Supporting them requires approximately 650 volunteers, specialized safety sweepers, hike-in aid stations, four-wheel-drive transportation and nearly a full year of planning.

Bill Schum, Hardrock's volunteer coordinator and an aid-station captain, takes Scott behind the scenes of the legendary 100-mile race through Colorado's San Juan Mountains.

Bill explains how volunteers support runners across a 48-hour event with roughly 33,000 feet of climbing. Some carry supplies into remote aid stations. Others spend two nights in the mountains, clear the course, manage traffic, provide medical support, or follow the final runners across passes above 13,000 feet.

He also shares some unforgettable moments from the course: volunteers searching for a missing pacer, a runner receiving the shoelace directly from a volunteer's shoe, a surprise bear at an aid station, and the wildfire smoke that kept Bill awake for 64 consecutive hours.

Along the way, Bill reveals what the back of the pack experiences at Hardrock, how technology has changed remote aid-station operations, and why every runner should expect the race to be harder and much slower than imagined.

The Last Finisher Matters. Celebrating the Back of the Pack with Mandy Hansel The Last Finisher Matters. Celebrating the Back of the Pack with Mandy Hansel Tue, 25 Aug 2026 17:09:00 +0000 Finishing last isn't the same as failing. Ultrarunner and race director Mandy Hansel shares what her DFL finishes have taught her about courage, cutoffs, and creating races where every participant feels welcome.

At the back of the pack, the aid stations may be picked over, the course markers may be coming down, and long stretches of the race may be spent entirely alone. Mandy has experienced all of it, from having a sweeper push her out of an aid station to being cut halfway through a race she had trained hard to finish.

Those experiences helped shape the kind of race director she wanted to become. Mandy, co-founder of Storm Sporting Events, joins Scott to talk about the mental strength required at the back of the pack, the fear of finishing last, and why a DFL finisher can deserve the same celebration as the person who came in first.

They also explore fixed-time events as an approachable way to take on something big, what race directors can do to create a more inclusive experience, and how Storm Sporting Events uses its races to support youth mental health in southeastern Minnesota.

Danny Murphy is an ultrarunner, engineer and the founder of UltraPacer, a race-planning tool designed to account for the things that make trail racing complicated including elevation, terrain, altitude, heat, fatigue and even darkness.

Scott and Danny talk about how UltraPacer started as a spreadsheet Danny built while preparing for his first 100K, why evenly pacing an ultramarathon usually isn't realistic, and how runners can use pacing data without becoming completely tied to a spreadsheet on race day.

They also dig into race-day strategy, setting realistic goals, using training runs to test a race plan, and why a good pacing plan may be just as useful for your crew as it is for you.

About UltraPacer

UltraPacer helps runners create race plans based on the actual demands of a course rather than relying on one average pace. Runners can account for variables including grade, terrain, altitude, heat, fatigue and darkness, then use those estimates to better understand what race day may look like.

The majority of UltraPacer's features are available for free, and runners can use existing courses or upload their own GPX file to start building a plan.

Better Fueling, Better Training with Alex Larson Better Fueling, Better Training with Alex Larson Tue, 28 Jul 2026 10:00:00 +0000 Many endurance athletes spend plenty of time thinking about what to eat during a race but far less time considering whether they're eating enough to support their training every day.

In this episode, Scott talks with Minnesota-based registered dietitian and endurance athlete Alex Larson about practical fueling strategies for better energy, recovery and performance. Alex explains why fueling is both a science and an art, how to recognize the less-obvious signs of underfueling and why the habits that make the biggest difference are often the simplest ones.

In this episode:

  • Why race-day nutrition begins with how you eat throughout training

  • How to fuel before, during and after a three-hour long run

  • Why Alex encourages athletes to begin fueling early instead of waiting until they feel depleted

  • How to gradually increase carbohydrate intake while building gut tolerance

  • An easy way to calculate your sweat rate at home

  • Why feeling exhausted for the rest of the day after a long run may be a fueling problem

  • The importance of carbohydrates and protein after running and strength training

  • How athletes can pursue body-composition goals without dieting during their workouts

  • Common signs that an athlete may not be eating enough—even when they believe they eat "clean"

  • Why many high-volume athletes fall short on both carbohydrates and protein

Many endurance athletes spend plenty of time thinking about what to eat during a race but far less time considering whether they're eating enough to support their training every day.

  • Nutrition priorities for aging athletes, including protein, creatine, strength and bone health

  • The surprisingly powerful habit Alex wishes more athletes would adopt

  • Why Coke beats an IPA immediately after an ultramarathon

  • Alex's biggest nutrition-industry pet peeves

Take a Bet on Yourself with Trail Sisters Founder Gina Lucrezi Take a Bet on Yourself with Trail Sisters Founder Gina Lucrezi Thu, 16 Jul 2026 10:00:00 +0000

Trail running can be intimidating, even if you are already an experienced runner.

When Gina Lucrezi first moved from track to trail, she approached a steep Colorado climb with the same stride and expectations she had as a 10-time NCAA Division III All-American. It didn't take long before she was forced to walk while a more experienced trail runner pitter-pattered past her. It was a humbling introduction to one of trail running's most important lessons: you have to let go of pace and learn a different way to move.

Today, Gina is the founder of Trail Sisters, an organization dedicated to increasing women's participation and opportunities in trail running through inspiration, education, and empowerment. What began in 2016 as an online journal with contributions from seven of Gina's friends has grown into a community that includes local running groups, retreats, races, and educational resources.

In this episode, Gina and Scott talk about the confidence gap that keeps many people from trying trail running and why building confidence is a daily practice. Gina explains how no-drop groups help runners feel welcome, why hiking is absolutely part of trail running, and what road runners need to understand before making the move to the trails.

They also cover the practical side of getting started, including choosing the right gear, planning and downloading routes, staying aware of your surroundings, and preparing for changing weather. Gina shares advice from her experience as a trail runner and member of her local search and rescue team, including why hypothermia can be a concern even during warmer months and what to do when lightning or storms move in.

In this episode:

  • How Gina went from elite track runner to trail and ultrarunner
  • Why she created Trail Sisters and how it has evolved over 10 years
  • Confidence as one of the biggest barriers to trail running
  • Why no-drop groups make the trails more accessible
  • Letting go of road pace and learning to run by terrain and effort
  • Why walking and power hiking belong in trail running
  • The gear beginners actually need
  • Route planning, offline maps, and trail awareness
  • Preparing for weather, hypothermia, and lightning
  • The Trail Sisters Half Marathon and 10K in Buena Vista
  • Finding purpose through community involvement and service

Whether you are curious about trail running, preparing for your first trail race, or looking for a more welcoming community, this conversation is a reminder that you do not have to be fast or experienced to belong on the trails. Sometimes you just have to take a bet on yourself.

Crewing for an Ultra Run: Start to Finish

]]>
In this episode, we're talking all things ultra race crewing with Sandra Bullock Smith, author of Crewing for an Ultra Run: Start to Finish.

Crewing can make a huge difference in a runner's race experience, but it is so much more than showing up with snacks and a chair. Sandra shares what crew members need to know before race day, how to build trust with your runner, what mistakes to avoid, and how to stay flexible when things inevitably do not go according to plan.

Whether you are crewing for the first time, supporting a runner at their next ultra, or trying to better understand what your crew may experience during a race, this conversation is full of practical advice, perspective, and plenty of real-life ultrarunning wisdom.

In This Episode, We Talk About:

  • What crewing really means in ultra running
  • How to define the role of a crew before race day
  • Where first-time crew members should start
  • Common crewing mistakes and how to avoid them
  • Essential gear and supplies for crew members
  • How to support a runner when things get hard
  • Why communication and expectations matter
  • How crew members can manage fatigue and sleep deprivation

Lootie's World Run: The fastest woman to run around the world! Lootie's World Run: The fastest woman to run around the world! Wed, 10 Dec 2025 20:09:00 +0000 Scott sits down with Marie Leautey to talk about her epic run around the world, yes, the world!

Enjoy the show and read below for a solid AI description of it all!!

Title: Running the World: Marie Leautey's Incredible Journey of Self-Discovery

Introduction:
In a world where adventure often feels out of reach, Marie Leautey's story is a testament to the power of determination and the transformative nature of running. From a life of smoking to becoming a world runner, Marie's journey is not just about the miles; it's about rediscovering oneself and embracing new challenges.

Main Content:
1. **A Nomadic Background**
Marie Ludie, known affectionately as Lootie, hails from France but has lived in various countries, making her a true global citizen. Speaking four languages and having experience in multiple cultures, her nomadic lifestyle has shaped her perspective on life and fitness. It was during her time as a nomad that she discovered the joys of running, which allowed her to explore new places intimately.

2. **The Turning Point**
At the age of 26, Marie faced a pivotal moment when she realized her unhealthy lifestyle was holding her back. A friend invited her to run, and after merely 500 meters, she found herself out of breath, a shocking realization for someone so young. This moment ignited a fire within her, prompting her to quit smoking and commit to a healthier lifestyle. She vowed never to miss a day of running, turning her newfound passion into a daily habit that transformed her life.

3. **The Concept of the World Run**
The dream of running around the world emerged in 2017 while Marie was working as a CFO in Singapore. Bored and doodling during a conference call, she sketched a figure running around a globe. Upon researching, she discovered that only six people had accomplished such a feat before her. This validation fueled her desire to embark on her own world run, leading her to spend two years preparing mentally and physically for the challenge.

4. **The Journey Begins**
Marie began her world run in December 2019, just three months before the pandemic changed the world. Over the next three years, she would cover over 26,000 kilometers, experiencing diverse cultures and landscapes across multiple continents. Each day brought new challenges and new perspectives, making her journey not just a physical challenge but also a spiritual and emotional one.

5. **The Rules of Engagement**
Marie's journey was guided by the World Runners Association, which established the rules for world runs. This included a minimum distance requirement and a set path that navigated the planet's continents while accounting for the vast bodies of water. These regulations helped Marie shape her route, ensuring her journey was both authentic and recognized by the running community.

Season 16:12 Running under the weather, Dexa scans, and walk to run ratio in training Season 16:12 Running under the weather, Dexa scans, and walk to run ratio in training Thu, 02 Jan 2025 16:51:00 +0000 Carrie brings some great questions about her training to the call today including:   How to decide when running is too much when you aren't 100% well?  Pre and post training Dexa scans.  Is gait analysis worth it? How much of the training should be walking verse running?

Coach Ian Sharman gives some great insight as she navigates training for her first ultra.

About the hosts:

Ian Sharman

Ian has been racing around the world in all formats of event since 2005 and coaching since 2010, having run over 250 marathons and ultras on five continents (marathon PR 2:21 at age 43, half marathon PR 1:03 at age 44). He's won over 50 marathon+ races with at least one win every year for 19 (and counting) consecutive years. He also holds the fastest time in a trail 100-mile race by a Brit (12h44m), the record for the Grand Slam of Ultrarunning (69h49m), has won the USATF 100-mile trail championship twice and is a four-time Leadville Trail 100 Champion. Ultra Running Magazine has voted him as high as 2nd in its annual Ultra Runner of the Year rankings and 4th in Ultra Runner of the Decade.

Scott Jones, M.S.

Scott started Becoming Ultra to bridge the gap between athletes doing amazing things and the rest of us. There are so many runners that have experienced the joy of training for big things and getting them done and he wanted to bring that to the masses.

The mission is to bring entertaining content and education to the world of running and to continue to coach runners with big goals as he has for the last 20 years! You can listen to him on the Becoming Ultra podcast as a host and coach, find him interviewing other types of athletes and adventurers on Athlete On Fire, or putting on retreats and training camps all over the world.

He has his M.S. in exercise science and has coached athletes from most major professional sports teams, Olympians, 1000's of young athletes, and hundreds of endurance athletes in his 20+ year career as a coach.

On this podcast Will shares his amazing story of how he has learned to heal his body through movement. He knows no limits and has an incredible belief in himself. Will also talks about race directing and creating races that are inclusive and adaptive to all athletes. He has earned the nickname "Iron Will." Mon, 12 Aug 2024 15:23:00 +0000 Scott had a great chat with Susie Chan on all things adventure, life, and running.  We aim to make more content to inspire big efforts from regular, amazing, humans.  Enjoy!

From her book blurb:

Susie Chan is an icon of endurance running. Since taking up running at the age of 35, she has completed the legendary Marathon des Sables more times than any other British woman, set the 12-hour treadmill World Record and was one of the first women to finish all the World Marathon Majors.

Susie's story is an inspirational fight against the odds. From leaving a dysfunctional marriage, managing as a single mum and tackling cancer treatment, Susie has had her fair share of adversity. Throughout it all, running has kept her going. She always finds a reason to lace up her shoes and hit the road – or the track, trail or tread. Her mantra: You never regret a run.

From the Moroccan desert, the Peruvian jungle and the sweltering Death Valley, to Susie's local South Downs and a running track in Tooting, her adventures take her across the globe. With Susie's down-to-earth personality, refreshing attitude and wicked sense of humour, we learn the countless reasons she finds to push herself further and the life-changing opportunities running has given her.

All In Stride author and Olympian Samantha Schultz on her journey and the cost of training. All In Stride author and Olympian Samantha Schultz on her journey and the cost of training. Fri, 02 Aug 2024 20:34:00 +0000 Today's episode is a change up from typical ultra conversations but an important one nonetheless. Whether you are training for the Olympics or your own big goals, having coaches and people in your corner that want the best for you on the field or trail is important.  One of Scott's former athletes shares her journey with the author of All In Stride to hopefully help other athletes navigate training, disordered eating, and more. Hope you enjoy!

In All in Stride, Johanna Garton tells the gripping and inspiring stories of Elvin and Shadrack. Beginning with their upbringing in Kenya, Garton follows the runners through their journeys to the United States, running for Division One universities, their blossoming romance as college students, and ultimately their service as U.S. soldiers and professional runners. Woven through the narrative is the story of Samantha Schultz, who also competed for the U.S. Army. Like Elvin and Shadrack, she struggled with several obstacles throughout her journey, including poor coaching, over training, the intense pressure to make the Olympic team, and disordered eating, a condition that plagues so many young female athletes.
