"Big Brother Is Watching": Facebook 'Accidentally' Includes Secret Orwellian Messages On VR Controllers      Comment   Translate Page

Tens of thousands of Facebook Oculus virtual reality (VR) controllers contain bizarre 'hidden' inscriptions warning that "Big Brother is Watching" and "The Masons Were Here" among other things ominous messages, according to Business Insider

According to Nate Mitchell, cofounder of Facebook-owned VR organization Oculus, the messages were "easter eggs" which were only meant for prototypes.

Mitchell added "While I appreciate easter eggs, these were inappropriate and should have been removed.

And while the affected units haven't shipped yet, Facebook spokeswoman Joanna Peace told Business Insider that they will ultimately go out to consumers with the hidden messages inside.

Oculus Touch controllers

"To be clear, no devices have been sold with these messages yet, since Quest and Rift S have not yet shipped. That said, as mentioned in Nate's tweet, the messages will be inside tens of thousands of controller pairs that will ship to consumers when Quest and Rift S ship," wrote Facebook in an email - which kind of makes this look like a giant advertising stunt

"We think it's important to be transparent with our community and take responsibility when there's an error," added the company.

While most users of the Touch controller will never see the hidden messages, it's an awkward misstep for Facebook, which has faced sustained criticism on privacy issues for more than a decade.

It comes as Facebook attempts to push virtual reality into the mainstream, and the company is also gearing up to launch its long-awaited Oculus Quest, an all-in-one virtual reality headset, in the coming months. -Business Insider

Misstep or marketing campaign?

The inscriptions are sure to draw comparisons to Mark Zuckerberg's 'illuminati' hoodie, which he revealed during a 2020 interview with Recode editor-at-large Kara Swisher.

The TEA Summit shows how artists make the impossible happen      Comment   Translate Page
By Robert Niles: The Themed Entertainment Association's annual TEA Summit brings hundreds of the world's top theme park design professionals to Anaheim to celebrate and learn from the best new attractions and developments opened in the past couple of years.

So what were a bunch of people who run a motorcycle dealership in Topeka, Kansas doing there?

TEA Summit 2019

Amanda Beach, Bruce Zimmerman, and Michael Patterson (above) actually asked themselves that same question as they took the stage Friday to talk about their upcoming Thea Award for the Evel Knievel Museum during the TEA Summit's Case Studies day. How a team of people who restored and sold Harley-Davidson motorcycles for a living ended up building an award-winning themed attraction far off the tourist path provided what might have been the day's best illustration of the creative process that drives this industry.

Turning buckets of motorcycle parts into a $350,000 Mecum Auctions sale for rocker Jerry Lee Lewis attracted the attention of Lathan McKay, who has amassed a collection of Knievel motorcycles, leathers, and memorabilia. He'd just bought Knievel's old Mack Truck hauler and was looking to get it restored.

A lifelong Knievel fan, Patterson agreed to project, despite the dealership having no experience in restoring trucks. But they learned how to do it, and did. Impressed with their work, McKay agreed to display the truck at the dealership as the anchor of an Evel Knievel museum.

Except that the team didn't know how to develop a museum, either. But like with the truck restoration, they learned how to do it, and they did. Ultimately, the dealership partnered with Dimensional Inventions to develop three interactive exhibits for the new 16,000-square-foot facility, including "Bad to the Bones," an interactive anatomy display that illustrates all the broken bones that Knievel suffered in missed jumps over his career. Another display invites visitors to figure out the proper speed and launch angle to successfully land a motorcycle jump.

But the exhibit that caused all the polite skepticism in the room to melt into giddy "book my trip to Topeka NOW" enthusiasm was a custom 4D virtual reality experience that allows visitors to sit on a 1974 Harley decorated in Knievel's red-white-and-blue colors, strap on a VR headset and to see with your eyes and feel with your rear end what it's like to sit on a bike as it jumps 16 police cars. For a moment, you can be Evel Knievel. Here's the museum's hype video, which includes POV from the jump ride:

The same "what the hell, let's go for it" spirit helped build the Slidewheel, a rotating water slide that looks like what would have happened if M.C. Escher has designed a water park. This one actually sprung from the imagination of a Swiss boy, who described a "never ending water slide" to his father. Together, they filed a patent for the idea, then got German manufacturer wiegand.maelzer to try to build a prototype.

Managing Director Rainer Maelzer described how industry pros would come look at their model at trade shows, immediately dismiss it as "impossible," then return a couple of hours later to look more, saying, "well, maybe, if you do this..." Like any great idea, it just wouldn't get out of people's heads once it got in.

But who would buy it? Eventually, China's Chimelong Group stepped up. And now we have this.

And yes, the young man who dreamed of the slide got to ride it.

Want more seemingly crazy ideas? TEA Summit Case Study day is filled with 'em. How about putting drones into a stage show... inside a cruise ship? Princess Cruises did it, with its Fantastic Journey show aboard Majestic Princess, which also features six giant LED "doors" that move around the stage and projection mapping covering 270 degrees of the theater's walls. That would be impressive tech in any theater, much less on that one that moves with the ocean's waves and swells... and has a single stage load door only six feet by nine feet, located 30 feet above the water line. Everything on that stage has to pack down to fit through.

Or how about an art installation in a national park, where you're not legally allowed to install anything? Sarah Fuller, Tamara Ross, and Moment Factory's Simon Garant presented Illuminations: human/nature, a nighttime experience where small groups of visitors carried multimedia equipment disguised as camping tools to enable digital displays about wildlife and indigenous peoples as the visitors hiked through the park. That forced the visitors to have to work together throughout the experience, making it more impressive for all.

"The tools were the coolest thing to come out of this," Fuller said. "But those tools were there because of the constraints."

The case studies also revealed additional detail about more familiar attractions. Owen Yoshino from Walt Disney Imagineering and Roger Gould from Pixar revealed that Disney has considered a StormRider sequel and a The Incredibles-on-vacation theme for the StormRider revamp that became Nemo & Friends SeaRider at Tokyo DisneySea. The motion theater show employs randomly selected chapters, like Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, but without the visual crutch of lightspeed jumps that allows them stitch together the selected scenes in that attraction. Not opting to use something similar, such as bubble wipes, required Imagineers to devise chapters that would all run for the exact number of frames with the same beginning and ending frames for seamless transitions.

Mike Davis from Universal Parks and Resorts presented Universal Studios Japan's Spectacle Night Parade: The Best of Hollywood, which includes units themed to the Minions, Transformers, Jurassic World, and Harry Potter. Davis explained how Universal stepped beyond the conventions established by Disney's Main Street Electrical Parade to create a new type of nighttime parade, one that used more theatrical lighting, supported by projection mapping on buildings surrounding the parade route. Universal also developed a virtual sound zone that allowed the appropriate music and soundscape to follow each float down the parade route, rather than employ the traditional sound design method of breaking up the route into distinct sound zones that sometimes don't match with the exact timing of floats.

Universal Creative's Dale Mason also talked attendees through Universal Orlando's Volcano Bay water theme park. (Which we discussed in our podcast last fall.) Another Theme Park Insider interviewee, Rich Hill, presented the Six Flags Magic Mountain installation of Justice League: Battle for Metropolis, which he and I talked about here on the site previously.

You can experience a Thea Award winner at home with Be Washington, a simulation game from Virginia's Mount Vernon, where visitors (in person or online) watch beautifully produced video reenactments of four crises in George Washington's military and political careers, then decide how they would have acted in the same situation. Christopher Jackson, who originated the role of George Washington in Broadway's "Hamilton," hosts.

But the presentations had me ready to book a trip to Denmark to visit Billund's LEGO House, built to look like 21 giant stacked LEGO bricks and devoted to the ideal of learning through play.

And then on to China to visit the Fantawild Oriental Heritage theme park in Xiamen, which tells traditional stories of Chinese culture using the latest in high-tech theme park attractions, including a four-sided "holographic" stage, a 360-degree rotating and lifting theater under a dome screen, and a robot-arm dark ride.

Former SeaWorld creative director Brian Morrow moderated several of the presentations and summarized the day's lessons: "The impossible is plausible, if you work hard."

Government technology applications showcased at International ICT Expo (with photos)      Comment   Translate Page
The Office of the Government Chief Information Officer (OGCIO) is showcasing for the first time the smart lamppost and the free electronic identity (eID) at the Smart Government Pavilion at the International ICT Expo which started today (April 13). The public may also have a glimpse of various technology applications that government departments have adopted and will employ to enhance public service and develop Hong Kong into a smarter city.

The smart lampposts to collect real-time city data will commence service in phases from mid-2019. A prototype of the smart lamppost has been set up at the Pavilion to exhibit the camera and various sensors and smart devices installed. There is also a demonstration on how data collected will facilitate city management with the aid of artificial intelligence technology and provide real-time city information to the public.

Another highlight is the demonstration of eID, which is planned for rollout next year. Visitors can try out the quick and simple online registration and learn about the usage of this single digital identity authentication for performing online transactions with government and commercial entities.

The OGCIO is also using the occasion to introduce the upcoming Smart Government Innovation Lab (Smart Lab) and the city dashboard. The Smart Lab will invite the industry to put forward proposals of innovative information technology applications and product suggestions for addressing challenges in public services while the city dashboard will present some livelihood-related open data such as those on traffic, weather and air quality on interactive charts and maps via data.gov.hk.

"The Government endeavours to adopt innovation and technology in various areas and services. We hope that through the interactive exhibits at the Pavilion, the public will have a better understanding of the convenience these applications can bring to them," the Government Chief Information Officer, Mr Victor Lam, said after touring the Pavilion today.

Other exhibits include the virtual reality technology adopted in maintenance training for seaport passenger boarding bridges; the e-Channel pre-fetch kiosk, which allows reading of smart identity card information by means of a contactless chip interface; the Post-dispatch Advice System to provide callers with more comprehensive and appropriate advice; the Single E-Lock Scheme for streamlining customs clearance processes; the Health Signs Monitoring System to help protect the safety of persons in custody; a voice recognition chatbot; and in-vehicle units to facilitate traffic management.

Innotech transforms construction      Comment   Translate Page

Students can experience being knocked down by an iron bar or witness an explosion caused by volatile gases at the Hong Kong Institute of Construction’s Safety Experience Training Centre.

The first of its kind in Hong Kong, the 3,000 sq ft facility in Kwai Chung features eight training zones where students can interactively learn about the common hazards or causes of accidents at construction sites at its Virtual Reality Cave.

At its Chemical & Electrical Safety Zone, students can also see how wires overheat and even feel a slight electric shock.

The institute hopes the students can enhance their safety awareness through such simulation-based training.

“We do not want to see any casualties in the industry. Moreover, if the construction environment is not safe, parents are reluctant to let the young people join the industry. So we attach special importance to safety training,” the institute’s Director Francis Wong said.

A step ahead
The institute was established in October 2018 and offers more than 200 full-time and short courses.

It aims to nurture a workforce with theoretical knowledge, professional skills, innovative ideas and safety awareness, and has been introducing innovative technological teaching elements, such as the use of simulators for welding courses.

Supervising Instructor (Welding) Chung Kai-man said the simulators provide students with a safe learning environment.

“In the past, when students were learning to weld, the sparks held them back. But with this simulator they can practise their skills safely. They already know how to control the welding track and speed at the construction site.”

Enhanced skillset
The institute said the courses aim to attract secondary students to the sector and help those in the field upgrade their skills.

Chung Sze-ki learnt to install a billboard with a simulator during a 50-day crane operation course.

“When I looked at the models at home, I originally thought cranes are easy to control. In fact, the bricks and iron bars are huge and I was afraid of them bumping into me. The simulator helps me to control them better.”

Her coursemate Mok Wei-wu is a veteran with more than a decade’s experience in the construction industry.

Wanting to upgrade his skills, Mr Mok recently resigned from his job to join the course.

“If I continue to move and lift heavy objects at a construction site, I will gradually suffer from strains and one day lose my strength,” he said.

“I hope to become a crane operator so I will not be exposed to the sun and rain. Plus, my salary will be higher too.”

Cutting edge
The institute is keeping in step with technological advancements in the construction industry’s work equipment.

Its Director Mr Wong said: “The most expensive construction cost, in terms of per square metre, is New York. Hong Kong comes next.

“Introducing new construction machines and techniques will lower the construction costs, enhance the productivity as well as the working environment in terms of safety.”

The 2019-20 Budget allocated $200 million to expand the apprenticeship scheme for the construction industry.

The institute expects to train 1,100 knowledge-based workers in the next one to two years, and increase allowances within five years to help 4,000 workers upgrade their skills.

I love VR.

I've loved it in all of its bastardised and malformed versions over the years.

The first time I ever played in virtual reality was at the Trocadero in London, and it was the VR iteration that made you stand in a weird, hula-hoop-like machine, clutching a retro flight-sim-style joystick as you aimlessly wandered around a VR world that looked like a kitchen cupboard demo whipped up at a Moben showroom.

Facebook's Oculus ships VR controllers with creepy hidden messages: 'Big Brother is Watching'      Comment   Translate Page

Ramin Talaie/Corbis via Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Tens of thousands of Oculus Touch controllers are delivering a little bit more than virtual reality.

The handheld devices from the Facebook-owned VR company are being shipped to consumers with hidden messages inside the controllers that say “The Masons Were Here” and “This Space For Rent," the company said.

"Unfortunately, some 'easter egg' labels meant for prototypes accidentally made it onto the internal hardware for tens of thousands of Touch controllers," Oculus co-founder Nate Mitchell announced on Twitter on Friday, referring to the hardware that will accompany the new Oculus Quest and Rift S headsets set to ship this spring.

"The messages on final production hardware say 'This Space For Rent' & 'The Masons Were Here.' A few dev kits shipped with 'Big Brother is Watching' and 'Hi iFixit! We See You!' but those were limited to non-consumer units," Mitchell wrote. The latter two messages were only in the prototypes shipped to developers.

iFixit is a group-sourced online repair manual and parts company that aims to teach consumers to repair their own electronics and reduce waste. The site posts deconstructed consumer electronics equipment whose insides might reveal such hidden text.

"While I appreciate easter eggs," Mitchell tweeted, referring to inside jokes in software and media, "these were inappropriate and should have been removed. The integrity and functionality of the hardware were not compromised, and we've fixed our process so this won't happen again."

The preemptive announcement and apology were released quickly for a company that has been criticized for being slow to react to problems with its products and services.

"This was a process error. The messages were meant as easter eggs for prototypes only and should have been removed pre-production," a Facebook spokesperson wrote to ABC News in an email. She confirmed that the units, which have yet to be shipped, will not be recalled.

Unfortunately, some “easter egg” labels meant for prototypes accidentally made it onto the internal hardware for tens of thousands of Touch controllers.

While I appreciate easter eggs, these were inappropriate and should have been removed. The integrity and functionality of the hardware were not compromised, and we've fixed our process so this won't happen again.

The mistake messages won't be visible in plain sight, the company confirmed.

"The messages are on an internal component of the controller – in other words, they’re inside the hardware," the Facebook spokeswoman wrote. "Thus, you’d have to take apart the controller to see either of the messages that will be on consumer controllers ('This Space for Rent' and 'The Masons were Here')."

Comment on The Notorious Ash Girl Chapter 6: Yin meets Yang by Emma Tyler       Comment   Translate Page
It's simple, it's direct, and it's fun, but-- Like anything there is room for improvement. Your story has a good pace, and the dialogue does a great job at carrying the brunt of narration, but I feel like a bit more description would help draw the reader in. Think of it this way. You've told me your story, now place me, the reader directly into it. What does it feel like to freefall? Remind me. Then there is the apartment-- What do those stacks of books smell like? Do voices echo around the room when people talk? Does the floor of that apartment give me a closer relationship with my shoes? How hot is blue fire? Bring your story to life by immersing your reader in it. When you write you are creating a virtual reality for your reader. Transport me.  Aside from that interesting use of present tense in first person no less. It was well done and not overly repetative with the, "I." Good job and keep it up! -Emma
