I Use Sonix to Transcribe Audio Recorded Sermons      Comment   Translate Page
I've been a pastor and public speaker for over 35 years.

All those jokes about pastors working one day a week are familiar to me. I laugh at them too, but if you've been a pastor for any length of time, you know that those jokes aren't even close to the truth.

Optically, pastors are seen once a week by most people.

Practically, pastors work every day of the week.

The hurting and the dying are in the numerical minority, but they make up the majority of the workload for pastors between those times the pastor is working on fresh, relevant sermon series, or preparing for the next committee and staff meeting, or other duties associated with pastoring.

Only pastors of large churches with a large staff who help with funerals, counseling, planning, and other pastoral responsibilities have had the time to write for the purpose of publishing books.

That is, until now.

Sonix is a service I use to transcribe my sermons. It's propriety artificial intelligence algorithm takes any uploaded audio (or video) file of my public speaking and transcribes them with a 98% accuracy for words and a greater than 95% accuracy on sentence and paragraph structure.

Transcribing sermons to turn them into published books is now super easy.

Of course, there will still have to be the editing of a Sonix transcript, but the time required to get 8 pages of a typed manuscript is reduced by 98% (two minutes to get a Sonix transcript compared to two hours of human typing). It's amazing to see such a swift and accurately typed manuscript of your spoken words.

Let me show you how it works.

Create your own Sonix account.

Then choose an audio file you wish to upload.

Our church uploads both audio files (podcast) and video files (Vimeo) to the Internet.

Your church may do neither, but you can still use Sonix if you simply have an MP3 or MP4 recording of your sermon on your computer.

Let me give you an example of the product.

I downloaded the MP4 Video file of my February 3, 2019, to my computer, a message entitled "Mind that Thinks "Never Seeking, Always Pursued" from our Vimeo account (if your sound booth takes a digital recording of your sermon, ask them to send you a copy of the digital file).

Then I uploaded my MP4 file to my account at Sonix.

I hit the "Transcribe" button in my account, and within two minutes, Sonix sends me an email saying my transcription file is ready.

Read below the first page of an eight-page transcript of my February 3, 2019, sermon from the Face of Grace series.  Sonix transcribed in two minutes and gave to me in Word format.  I've done nothing to the Sonix transcript below. It's raw, no edits.

You can watch the beginning of my February 3 sermon here to test the accuracy of the transcript from Sonix.

Wade Burleson A Mind That Thinks Never Seeking; Always Pursued - Feb. 3.mp4
I don't know how many of you like to travel but I've been around the United States and have had the privilege of going to other countries. I have to say to you though I have never seen more beautiful landscape than western Oklahoma. This week I drove about two and a half hours to sentinel for the funeral of Tom Martin's mother Mae and I took the back roads. I came back through Fairview and oh my word. I think living in western Oklahoma we get used to it but if you ever take a moment just to look around in our first service this morning a woman from Fairview Dorothy she's in her 80s. She told me that legend says that a person climbed the glass mountains looked around and said My what a fair view. And right down there in the valley, a city called Fairview was started. I won't ask a question how many of you in this auditorium have at one time or another lived in Fairview Oklahoma. Lift your hand anybody.
OK, I see about a dozen of you. Well in the second service this morning a couple from Fairview was present Garen and IVA Martins. They've been coming to a manual for about 19 years almost 20. And when you get up on Sunday morning and get dressed and come to corporate worship I know it's a great deal of sacrifice sometimes to come to get the kids ready and and to come to Emmanuel but these folks along with others drive from Fairview every single Sunday 35 miles Garen wrote me an email several months ago and he gave me permission to read a portion of it to you as I said he and his wife even began attending in 1999 and they joined Emmanuel in November of 2000 and in his email he said Pastor I came across my personal journal from December 2000 and one where I wrote these words a new me has emerged one who understands grace and God's acceptance of me without my works I was always incapable of meeting the expectations that I and others placed on me to seal my salvation.
But since attending Emmanuel I've learned that because I was chosen by God to be his it's his grace and nothing that I do which gives me my security in him. Oh sure. I want to obey Jesus and work in his kingdom but that doesn't affect my salvation or God's favor of me my obedience and service helps others to know him and helps me to avoid the pitfalls of sin. I have learned since coming to Emmanuel that my security is in God's grace for me and that has given me a peace and a contentment that I have never experienced before.

As you can tell, editing will be required. A few commas are needed, the email from Garen Martens needs to be put in "quotations" to set it off, and there may need to be paragraph adjustments, as well as a few words corrected. In my Habakkuk series, Sonix hears the word Habakkuk and will sometimes use "quarterback" or "have her back" etc., so I have to edit it.

But the time saved having artificial intelligence transcribe my sermons is enormous.

It costs me about $5.00 to get 8 pages of a transcript (plus the annual subscription to Sonix).

But compared to the time it would take for me to transcribe, or as is the case during the first 20 years of ministry, to have a super competent secretary (Barbara Ebert) spend countless hours faithfully typing my sermons - unfortunately, getting carpal tunnel in her hands through constant typing - Sonix gives us all an advantage that only modern technology can afford.

Not everybody has a professional editor mother (Mary Burleson) like I do, who is currently editing the transcripts from Sonix that could become a book (Lord willing) called The Face of Grace, but I believe that you could edit your Sonix transcripts yourself, getting them ready for publication.

I did tons of research for months to find the best way to transcribe sermons, and I can truthfully say that Sonix has knocked it out of the park.

It's heads and shoulders above all other companies in terms of accuracy, ease, and price.

If you wish to sign up for Sonix, go here! You'll be helping me write The Face of Grace if you sign up through this link because I get 100 free minutes of free transcription (about 3 Sunday morning sermons) for each new account through this link (a savings to me of about $15.00 in subscription fees). Thank you.

Right now, we are on chapter 6 of The Face of Grace.

I wish you the best in your publishing efforts!
NORDURLAND - An arctic surfing adventure      Comment   Translate Page

Nordurland is a film about going surfing in the harsh, cold waters of the North Atlantic. It follows three friends from the subtropical northern rivers of NSW Australia, surfers Torren Martyn and Laurie Towner, as well as needessentials founder and designer Ryan Scanlon. They travel to isolated, snow covered coastlines in search of remote waves and Filmmaker Ishka Folkwell, beautifully captures these vast and stunning landscapes on screen. With an original soundtrack composed for the film by Headland, glaciers, mountains and powerful icy surf all come to life in this adventure to the far north. Torren Martyn's narration throughout the film offers a personal reflection on the trip and a real glimpse into the challenges and rewards of traveling to frozen, distant lands in search of surf.

Wasomi watoa maoni kuhusu EPA      Comment   Translate Page

A Message to the Seventh-day Adventist Church from the President      Comment   Translate Page

Pastor Ted N.C. Wilson Speaks About the Upcoming Spring Meeting and More

Apr 04, 2019 | Silver Spring, Maryland, United States | Ted N.C. Wilson, President, Seventh-Day Adventist World Church

Greetings to our more than 21 million members around the world who make up the wonderful Seventh-day Adventist church family in more than 200 countries! I thank God for each one of you and want to encourage you, no matter where you are, to be an active member in your local church, and to reach out to your surrounding community, making friends as you gently yet purposefully guide people to Jesus and His love and truth. Always remember that you are the church—that God is eagerly looking to you to reach others for Him. He has called you, and He will equip you as you spend time with Him in prayer and the study of His word.

As you may know, at least two times a year, members of the world church’s General Conference Executive Committee gather together to discuss important spiritual and business items guiding the work of our worldwide church. The Executive Committee is made up of church leaders, teachers, pastors, and lay members from the thirteen world divisions, the Middle East and North Africa Union (MENA) and attached fields of the General Conference.

The full Executive Committee meets during what is called Annual Council, held in October of each year. A somewhat smaller group of the committee meets in April for the shorter Spring Meeting, where the focus is mainly on the finances of the church, along with related items. In addition, we also take some time to focus on important spiritual aspects, especially during the morning worship times together.

In just a few days from now, April 9 and 10, the Spring Meeting will take place here at the world headquarters of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Silver Spring, Maryland. You are welcome to join us during these meetings, via the livestream on the Executive Committee website at executivecommittee.adventist.org. The meetings begin with morning worship at 8 a.m., Eastern Daylight Time.

I would also like to tell you about a very important meeting taking place here at the world headquarters on April 10 and 11[*], just after the Spring Meeting. That is The State of Military Service in the Seventh-day Adventist Church Conference: Combatants, Non-Combatants, Conscientious Objectors.

During this important conference, church leaders from around the world, along with Division and Union Adventist Chaplaincy Ministries Directors, Public Affairs and Religious Liberty and Youth Ministries Directors, will meet together to consider the Seventh-day Adventist church’s relationship to military service.

You know, the question of military service arose early in the history of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The church, officially organized in 1863 during the height of the United States’ civil war, had to almost immediately wrestle with how members would respond to the call of arms.

As with other difficult questions, the pioneer leaders studied the issues using the Bible as their guide and concluded the position most consistent with Biblical principles was noncombatancy (the conscientious objection to bearing arms).

By 1864, the young church had successfully appealed to the United States’ federal government for an official designation of noncombatancy, a position that it has consistently held ever since.

After World War 2, the Adventist Church further elaborated on its noncombatancy position by approving a document, “The Relationships of Seventh-day Adventists to Civil Governments and War,” at the General Conference Session in 1954. The statement was reaffirmed and further refined at the 1954 and 1972 Annual Councils. The statement reads, in part:

“Genuine Christianity manifests itself in good citizenship and loyalty to civil government. The breaking out of war among men in no way alters the Christian’s supreme allegiance and responsibility to God or modifies their obligation to practice their beliefs and put God first.

“This partnership with God through Jesus Christ who came into this world not to destroy men’s lives but to save them causes Seventh-day Adventists to advocate a noncombatant position, following their divine Master in not taking human life, but rendering all possible service to save it.”

In addition to taking a noncombatancy position, the Seventh-day Adventist Church encourages its members not to join the military. Nevertheless, it is not a test of church membership.

According to “Adventists in Uniform,” the website of the church’s Adventist Chaplaincy Ministries, the church “does not seek to be the conscience for any member or commander, but rather seeks to inform the conscience and behavior of both, so decisions can be made with maximum understanding and thought.”

We understand that in some countries, noncombatancy options are not available, and Adventists are required to serve in their country’s military. Even then, these young believers are encouraged to find ways to be faithful to God while serving their country. If members find themselves in the military, whether by personal choice or conscription, the church, through Adventist Chaplaincy Ministries, and other avenues tries to spiritually minister to them.

As Seventh-day Adventists, we have maintained an historic witness in favor of peace and non-combatantcy throughout the 151 years of the church’s existence.

Furthermore, our pastors who serve as chaplains in the military have had a big impact in serving those who have chosen to serve in the military. They have been able to reach those who may not have been able to be reached in other circumstances, and we appreciate the challenging yet professional service they provide.

Once again, dear brothers and sisters in Christ, I want to thank you for being a part of the Seventh-day Adventist world family. May God bless and encourage you, as you seek to bless others through His Spirit. Jesus is coming, I believe, very soon! Let’s do all we can to reach out to individuals who do not yet know or believe in Christ as their Savior. Maranatha!

[*]Correction:The dates for this Conference have been changed to April 10 and 11, 2019, rather than April 11 and 12, as stated on the video. Thank you for taking note of this date change.

An interesting mobile app design case study by Yaroslav Lozovoi, a UI/UX designer based in Odessa, Ukraine. He shared on Behance about a concept of a NYC Taxi App, we are commonly used to the Uber experience but how about for cab drivers? Following his design process from research to the UI design, he also has done a tremendous job at building the presentation as well. 2 more points on the presentation! On the actual work, I can feel some patterns from Uber but I just love the thinking behind the "advanced search", it's intuitive and on point on the user goal. Hope you will like this case study!

Hi mates! Some time ago I worked on a taxi application and was inspired to make my own one. I made some research and interviewed a target audience to be able to create a useful and comfortable product that corresponds to all user's needs. Advice and opinions are welcome :)

Frozen Music (Prototype)
Sound sculptures for a large projection surface.

A previsualization for “Frozen Music”, a generative video installation.

Sound is presented as a three-dimensional sculpture that becomes ‘frozen’ in time. Suspended in space, each form delicately shifts and moves to expose intricate qualities. As an audience observes, they experience sound as an architectural element, as each sculpture is created in real-time.

Four past winners will be part of a strong women's field for the 17th annual race. The men's field will feature riders from three UCI Continental teams, as well as international competitors in the field.

All elite and pro races of the Sunny King Criterium will be broadcast here, with the pro women's one-hour race starting at 6:20 p.m., and the men's 60-lap event taking off at 7:30 p.m. (all times CDT).

"There’s no better place to kick off the criterium racing season for USA Cycling’s Pro Road Tour than in Anniston," said cycling commentator Brad Sohner, who is returning for his fourth year of calling the action. "It’s a fast, smooth course in downtown with plenty of spectators. It is one of the few events in the country that offers a full nine hours of free webcasting to showcase amateurs and pros."

Sunny King is the first criterium on the US Pro Raod Tour calendar, which started last month at the Redlands Bicycle Classic in California and continued last week at the Joe Martin Stage Race in Arkansas. Stephen Bassett (First Internet Bank) leads the men's overall standings ahead of Alexander Cowan (Floyd's Pro Cycling) and Kevin Vermaerke (Hagens Berman Axeon). Sho-Air Twenty20's Chloe Dygert leads the women's standings over Krista Doebel-Hickok (Rally UHC) and Shannon Malseed (Tibco-SVB).

When Most of Social Media Deletes My Accounts      Comment   Translate Page
Due to social media cracking down on those who expose Islam (YouTube deleted over ten years of my comments and LiveLeak deleted most of my videos including another account I had besides "Rammat"), it's a mater of time that this Remmat account will be gone as well. However, if you want to watch me now rapidly age before your eyes being that my body is now in that mode possibly from living with the Hepatitis B virus for nearly 30 years, or, you want to see a video that exposes Islam, go to "Minds", or "Bitchute" (however you spell it), and type into your web browser either "Rammat" or, "RammatRamzi". The latter has a space between Rammat and Ramzi if you want to see the books I wrote and published to Amazon. Of course, since Amazon removed Tommy Robinson's book "Muhammad's Koran", I have a feeling all my books on Amazon will probably be removed as well being that a lot of them expose Islam there. No one knows I write books because Amazon has put a block on them and hides them. To get to them, just typing "Rammat Ramzi" won't do it, it will make you think I only wrote four books. Type into the web browser of Amazon "Mutainia Wars", and, that will allow you to see other books when you click on my pen name. I don't know why the Globalists are bending over backwards to kiss up raised patooti in prostration on a prayer rug facing Mecca, but, they are. Thus, it's only a matter of time until ALL accounts critical of Islam will be gone. Anyway, if you don't want to sit through this video I just to explain this on, and, you want to see me further, type in those names on those sites. Here is a key video to take you to my account on Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/174300468 (Contrary to what the signs says, I don't take donations).
The House on the Rock      Comment   Translate Page

The first time I heard about the House on the Rock, I thought it wasn’t a real place. In Neil Gaiman’s novel American Gods, it fits right in along the other fantastical locations described there, like the land of the dead, the otherworldly dimension called “Backstage,” and Chicago. I read about this ultimate roadside attraction, sprawled around a remote portion of Wisconsin and filled with musical automatons, collections of curiosities and the largest carousel in the world that no one is allowed to ride—the place where the gods, old and new, congregate because it represents the uniquely American fascination with oddities that sprung from the vacuum of a more profound mythology and is therefore a strange kind of sacred—and I just assumed, reasonably, that someone made it all up.

Someone did make the House on the Rock up, but it wasn’t Neil Gaiman. It was mostly a man named Alex Jordan—although I’m not entirely convinced that Jordan didn’t just plant the right seed or conjure the right spell and from there the House grew on its own. But it does exist, just outside of the town of Spring Green, Wisconsin, not far from the state capital of Madison. From a personal residence Jordan started building in the mid-1940s, it has expanded to an inexplicable museum of things and experiences that steady crowds of people come to year in and year out.

The first time I went to the House on the Rock, I still thought it might not be a real place. Much of the journey through it is dim, twisty and unlabeled. It lives in some liminal space that’s not entirely like the place you came from but not entirely detached from it either. It doesn’t explain or contextualize itself. When you enter it, you, like Alice down the rabbit hole, are necessarily subject to another world’s set of logic and rules—a set which is defined by the conviction that a practical purpose doesn’t matter as much as a genuine experience.

The House on the Rock’s true nature is as the result of one creative individual’s interests and obsessions given free rein, manifested from his untrained designs into brick and mortar and cogs and wheels. There is no editing, no second guessing, no guidance dictated by market value or trends. Jordan did adjust parts of his attraction if he thought they didn’t inspire the reaction in guests that he wanted. But, mostly, he just made what he wanted. Sometimes it’s creepy and sometimes it’s beautiful. It’s thoroughly weird. It works as a whole because it just doesn’t care what anyone else thinks it should be. It just is what it is. Creepily, beautifully and weirdly.

I’ve now been to the House on the Rock several times. I visit on average twice a year. It never bores me and it always reminds me that there are strange things that exist for no particular reason at all but to experience them.

God has you in a position to see his great work and make your life an enduring testimony of faithfulness in the face of struggle and victory in the face of defeat.
James begins today’s video with a powerful statement:

Sometimes, God puts us into a position where only he can save us. And, he does this so that we might know that it is his power that saves us, and not our own.

The closest followers of Jesus learned this hard lesson repeatedly in their time with the Lord. Whether they were trying to feed over 5,000 in the countryside with only five loaves and two small fish, facing down a man who was uncontrollable with a legion of demons, or facing the strong storms on the Sea of Galilee, Jesus’ apostles found themselves in a humbling position on each occasion. They faced circumstances far too overwhelming to manage, much less fix. Each time, however, the Lord delivered them with his power and grace.

Moses' work to deliver Israel foreshadowed Jesus (Deuteronomy 18:15; Acts 3:22; 7:27). God called Moses at a burning bush in the desert and revealed to Moses that he cared about his people and was about to deliver them:

The Lord said, "I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey — the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them. So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt" (Exodus 3:7-10).

Notice the not so subtle shift from, "I have come down..." to "I am sending you..." The Israelites were in an impossible position, and only God could redeem them. He did, through Moses.

If you can't see the video, and you sure don't want to miss it, view it online. For additional ideas to consider and some things to discuss with others, we encourage you to see the Study Guide.

These larger than life stories are easy to dismiss. Our lives get caught in the undertow of problems, difficulties, disasters, illness, and loss. We can sometimes feel as if God has forgotten us or rejected us. However, we need to remember that 400 years passed from the time of Joseph until the deliverance of God’s people through Moses. People and families prayed untold thousands upon thousands of prayers for God to help them. Generation after generation came and went across the sands of Egyptian history. Somehow, however, faithful people passed on some thread of faith to their children and grandchildren. They were faithful in the face of increasing cruelty, hopelessness, and slavery. Then, when the time was right, God called Moses, fulfilling his promise to Abraham (Genesis 15:13; Acts 7:6).

We don’t know where you are in your sojourn through life. We do know that there are times when we all — even Jesus — feel abandoned by God because of our circumstances, problems, and pain. At that moment when we find ourselves in a position where only God can save us, let’s remember Moses. Let’s remember the family of Moses and those in the generations before him who lived faithfully without seeing their redemption (Hebrews 11:39-40). Let’s also recommit ourselves to endurance, remembering that God is faithful to keep his promises (Hebrews 10:23) and that his love will never abandon us (Romans 8:32-39). The story of Moses delivering the Israelites, of Jesus saving his apostles, and God's deliverance of Jesus’ from the power of sin, death, and hell through his resurrection, are all reminders to us to endure.

God gave us these biblical reminders of his faithfulness to encourage us to endure and to be faithful:

Such things were written in the Scriptures long ago to teach us. And the Scriptures give us hope and encouragement as we wait patiently for God’s promises to be fulfilled (Romans 15:4).

So, if you are between the Egyptian army and the Red Sea, a rock and a hard place, or in over your head, remember Moses, remember the apostles, and remember Jesus on the cross and in the tomb. Redemption is coming. God has you in a position to see his great work and make your life an enduring testimony of faithfulness in the face of struggle and victory in the face of defeat.

We have a God who sees, hears, knows, cares and comes down. He did it in Moses. He has done even more fantastically, in Jesus!

The two previous images are from Ridley Scott's Exodus: Gods and Kings movie: it is not recommended for historical or biblical accuracy, but for its great visual imagery and emotive power. See the trailer below.

Ted N. C. Wilson

Logan Paul e Mike Majlak (dir.) entrevistam Alex Jones (esq.) durante episódio do podcast Impaulsive (Imagem: Reprodução/The Verge)

A demo reel of my GPU 3D fractal renderer Mandala. Written in GLSL and made with Touchdesigner.

It has been a progressive project, that started off as a basic raymarching coding exercise and grew to an interactive fractal 'explorer'. Eventually I added more sophisticated shading, lighting, rendering and more controls to be able to stage scenes and do basic camera animation.

The colour pipeline with lens effects and tonemapping was done with a series of TOP's in Touchdesigner and some more GLSL.

List of features so far:
Monte-Carlo pathtracing
Global illumination
HDRI and area lighting
HDRI sun position detection
Volumetrics

Progressive rendering
Adaptive detail
Motion-Blur
Depth of Field
Linear-to-Light colour-pipeline

Post-processing:
Tone-Mapping
LUT application
Chromatic abberation
Lens bloom

Thanks to the people on fractalforums.org and Inigo Quilez for their amazing resources!

The tiger shark is more often considered the hunter rather than the hunted but here is filmed evidence that it is not quite at the top of its particular food chain.  Footage captured by Edwar Herreño shows a pod of killer whales take down a tiger shark with ruthless efficiency and then divvy up the resulting carcass, playing with their food as we might do with a shrimp.  The film captures not only the immediacy of lunch time chez the killers but also their sheer, magnificent power and size - not to mention that they ruthlessly stalk, kill and devour their prey so gracefully. True cetacean connoisseurs.
FACINE 26 Opens Call for Entries      Comment   Translate Page

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Filipino Arts and Cinema, International recently announced its call for entries to the 26th Annual Filipino International Cine Festival to be held in October at the Roxie Theater in San Francisco. The festival holds the distinction of being the largest and longest-running festival of its kind in North America.

FACINE 26 will select 8 to 9 full-length films that will be eligible to vie for awards in its main competition section this year. A panel of three jury members will select the winners, which will be announced in a closing ceremony after all screenings are completed. Competition entries should be San Francisco premieres. Awards to be given in this competition are Best Film, Direction, Performances by an Actor and Actress in Lead and Supporting roles, Writing, Editing, Cinematography, Visual Design and Aural Design.

A parallel competition for short films will also be held and they will vie for the Best Short Film award to be chosen by a separate panel of three jury members. A Viewer's Choice award will be decided online.

All entries by media artists of Filipino descent, regardless of number of entries, genre, subject and style, will be considered. Entries shall be no more than 120 minutes in length. Non-Filipino filmmakers may submit the works, but the subject must be on the Filipino. There is no registration fee.

If in a language other than English, all entries must be with English subtitles and shall be submitted in DVD or online. If online, send entries via Vimeo link or YouTube link to the address that will be sent to the interested party. Entries in DVD format may be mailed to this address:

Mauro Tumbocon, Jr., Director, Filipino Arts & Cinema International (FACINE)

537 Jones Street, PMB 2643

San Francisco, CA 94102, USA

Submission deadline for screeners, either online or by mail is on May 31, 2019, 11:59 p.m. PST.

For link to Rules and Entry Form, please send an email to submissions@facine.org.

For further details, carefully read the “Rules of Entry and Screening License Agreement” indicated in the submissions link to be provided to any interested party.

FACINE continues to showcase Filipino independent cinema – both from the Philippines and the Filipino diaspora – because Tumbocon believes that it is “valuable for strengthening our ethnic/national identity in a multi-cultural society like America.”

He added that the festival “provides a venue for engaging our community in issues relevant to us and to build a sustainable audience/market for Filipino cinema in the US. I believe this is doable given the sheer number of Filipino population in America, but dependent on how we are going to promote our work, reach out to untapped audience, and have FACINE be a financially sustainable organization.”
This Holy Week, "Let Us Resolve"... To Focus      Comment   Translate Page
Even if these last six weeks have flown, at least for some of us, "Lent" began last June 20th... and far and wide, that experience and its ongoing fallout makes for a Holy Week backdrop of a kind unknown in nearly two decades.

Looking around, the intensity of said context isn't hard to find. Nonetheless, these days aren't merely supposed to be "Holy" on the dead letter of a calendar – if there's a time for the Church (read: the People of God) to truly live up to its name, this is it... and may all of us especially know that grace over these days ahead.

In that light, if it's Palm Sunday here, that can only mean one thing... well, two.

First, the now-traditional warhorse to draw us into the Mystery – just one of many gifts from the folks in DC through the years....

...and as always – but now for the first time since the launch of her cause for beatification was approved by acclamation of the Stateside bench in November – the last word of the Servant of God Sister Thea Bowman, given from her deathbed on the eve of Holy Week 1989, days before her homegoing at 53 from bone cancer:
Let us resolve to make this week holy by claiming Christ’s redemptive grace and by living holy lives. The Word became flesh and redeemed us by his holy life and holy death. This week especially, let us accept redemption by living grateful, faithful, prayerful, generous, just and holy lives.

Let us resolve to make this week holy by reading and meditating Holy Scripture.

So often, we get caught up in the hurry of daily living. As individuals and as families, reserve prime time to be with Jesus, to hear the cries of the children waving palm branches, to see the Son of Man riding on an ass' colt, to feel the press of the crowd, to be caught up in the "Hosannas” and to realize how the cries of acclamation will yield to the garden of suffering, to be there and watch as Jesus is sentenced by Pilate to Calvary, to see him rejected, mocked, spat upon, beaten and forced to carry a heavy cross, to hear the echo of the hammer, to feel the agony of the torn flesh and strained muscles, to know Mary’s anguish as he hung three hours before he died.

We recoil before the atrocities of war, gang crime, domestic violence and catastrophic illness. Unless we personally and immediately are touched by suffering, it is easy to read Scripture and to walk away without contacting the redemptive suffering that makes us holy. The reality of the Word falls on deaf ears.

Let us take time this week to be present to someone who suffers. Sharing the pain of a fellow human will enliven Scripture and help us enter into the holy mystery of the redemptive suffering of Christ.

Let us resolve to make this week holy by participating in the Holy Week services of the church, not just by attending, but also by preparing, by studying the readings, entering into the spirit, offering our services as ministers of the Word or Eucharist, decorating the church or preparing the environment for worship.

Let us sing, "Lord, have mercy," and "Hosanna." Let us praise the Lord with our whole heart and soul and mind and strength, uniting with the suffering church throughout the world -- in Rome and Northern Ireland, in Syria and Lebanon, in South Africa and Angola, India and China, Nicaragua and El Salvador, in Washington, D.C., and Jackson, Mississippi.

Let us break bread together; let us relive the holy and redemptive mystery. Let us do it in memory of him, acknowledging in faith his real presence upon our altars.

Let us resolve to make this week holy by sharing holy peace and joy within our families, sharing family prayer on a regular basis, making every meal a holy meal where loving conversations bond family members in unity, sharing family work without grumbling, making love not war, asking forgiveness for past hurts and forgiving one another from the heart, seeking to go all the way for love as Jesus went all the way for love.

Let us resolve to make this week holy by sharing holy peace and joy with the needy, the alienated, the lonely, the sick and afflicted, the untouchable.

Let us unite our sufferings, inconveniences and annoyances with the suffering of Jesus. Let us stretch ourselves, going beyond our comfort zones to unite ourselves with Christ's redemptive work.

We unite ourselves with Christ's redemptive work when we reconcile, when we make peace, when we share the good news that God is in our lives, when we reflect to our brothers and sisters God's healing, God's forgiveness, God's unconditional love.

Let us be practical, reaching out across the boundaries of race and class and status to help somebody, to encourage and affirm somebody, offering to the young an incentive to learn and grow, offering to the downtrodden resources to help themselves.

May our fasting be the kind that saves and shares with the poor, that actually contacts the needy, that gives heart to heart, that touches and nourishes and heals.

During this Holy Week when Jesus gave his life for love, let us truly love one another.
Amen.

To one and all, every blessing of the days ahead – may we make this a truly Holy Week.
