So much for the two-game winning streak.

Baltimore first baseman Chris Davis ended what seemed like an O-for-forever streak of hitless plate appearances (62 actually) with a single, two doubles and four runs batted in as the Red Sox fell 9-5 to the Orioles at Fenway Park Saturday afternoon.

Rick Porcello (pictured) took the loss, falling to 0-3 on the season. He lasted just four innings allowing three runs on six hits and five walks while striking out a pair.

The Boston offense was held to just six hits. The bright spot was a two-hit, four RBI performance from catcher Christian Vazquez who homered in the third to briefly tie the game at 2-2.

David Price will take the mound for the Red Sox on Sunday afternoon.

CEO Disney Siap Pensiun di 2021, Kenapa?      Comment   Translate Page

Liputan6.com, Burbank - CEO Disney Robert Iger siap meninggalkan Disney.

Masalahnya, rencana pensiunnya terus menerus ditunda.

Gaji CEO Disney Dipotong hingga Ratusan Miliar, Mengapa?

Last night (April 12, 2019), the cast and crew of MAGIC MIKE LIVE Las Vegas celebrated two years and 1,000 performances at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.           America deserved better than Nancy Pelosi      Comment   Translate Page
A number of us knew Nancy Pelosi was not the Speaker of the House the country needed -- or deserved.  Some didn't want to get honest about that.  Can they get honest now?  Whoopi, Cher, all of you who don't really follow reality, you still standing by your support for Nancy?

Have no fear insurance, pharma and medical conglomerates, will eviscerate and destroy , you own her and most of ⁦⁩.

John Stauber is highlighting this SLUDGE article that notes:

A top hospital lobbyist told a room of health care executives this week not to worry about “Medicare for All” and suggested that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) won’t let the idea come up for a vote during the current Congress.
Tom Nickels, the American Hospital Association’s (AHA) executive vice president for government relations, spoke at the organization’s annual conference on Monday, a day before Pelosi addressed the same Washington, D.C. ballroom.
Although Nickels said that President Donald Trump and the Republican-controlled Senate would never support the idea of a government-run universal health care system, he predicted Pelosi also will work to block Medicare for All legislation, in hopes of protecting moderate Democrats in swing districts.
Again, we deserved better than Nancy.  She's not going to fight for what America needs.  She's 'left' only to those who don't know better or who are centrists.

Closing with C.I.'s "Iraq snapshot:"

Friday, April 12, 2019.  Lie about Iraq and get promoted or hired (Kevin Drum got hired by MOTHER JONES), tell the truth and get arrested like Julian Assange.

Yesterday, the founder and publisher of WIKILEAKS, Julian Assange, was arrested in London.  Why?

That's a multi-answer.  Some have cried "treason!"  Julian Assange is an Australian citizen, as such he cannot commit treason against the United States.  He is a publisher and the news he publishes makes the powerful uncomfortable.

For the US government, the first extreme bit of discomfort came on Monday April 5, 2010, when WIKILEAKS released  military video of a July 12, 2007 assault in Iraq. 12 people were killed in the assault including two REUTERS journalists Namie Noor-Eldeen and Saeed Chmagh.  Not only was the US government responsible for that attack, they were responsible for the lies and the coverup that followed.  When WIKILEAKS published the video, the truth was known.

Legal scholar Jonathan Turley (USA TODAY) explains:

He is our property.” Those celebratory words of Sen. Joe Manchin (D, W.V.) came on CNN soon after the news of the arrest of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange at the Ecuadorian embassy in London. It was a sentiment shared by virtually everyone in Washington from Congress to the intelligence services. Assange committed the unpardonable sins of embarrassing the establishment — from members of Congress to intelligence officials to the media. And he will now be punished for our sins. Despite having significant constitutional arguments to be made, it is likely that he will be stripped of those defenses and even barred from raising the overall context of his actions in federal court. What could be the most important free speech and free press case in our history could well be reduced to the scope and substance of an unauthorized computer access case.

Moreover, he was doing something that is usually heralded in the media. He disclosed a massive and arguably unconstitutional surveillance program by the United States impacting virtually every citizen. He later published emails that showed that the Democratic National Committee and the campaign of Hillary Clinton lied in various statements to the public, including the rigging of the primary for her nomination. No one has argued that any of these emails were false. They were embarrassing. Of course, there is not crime of embarrassing the establishment but that is merely a technicality.

WSWS observes:

For its part, the establishment media, which functions as an arm of the state, has jumped in to support the attack on Assange.
On Thursday evening, the editorial boards of the New York Times and the Washington Post issued statements supporting Assange’s extradition. “The government charged Julian Assange, founder of WikiLeaks, not with publishing classified government information, but with stealing it,” declared the New York Times, adding, “The administration has begun well by charging Mr. Assange with an indisputable crime.”
The Washington Post was even more open in its support of the Trump administration’s campaign against Assange, declaring “Mr. Assange’s case could conclude as a victory for the rule of law, not the defeat for civil liberties of which his defenders mistakenly warn.”
“Mr. Assange is not a free-press hero,” declares the Post. “Unlike real journalists, WikiLeaks dumped material into the public domain.” By the Post’s definition, the only “real journalists” are those that self-censor at the behest of the Pentagon.

These newspapers, which once published the Pentagon Papers, are nothing but apologists for US imperialism. One can only imagine the howls of outrage that would issue from the media if it was the Russian government that had carried out the forcible seizure and arrest of a journalist and critic of its foreign policy!

US House Rep Tulsi Gabbard, who is seeking the Democratic Party's presidential nomination, Tweeted the following:

Assange Arrest: The message is clear. To journalists and all Americans, if you try to take away our power, you will pay a high price.

The purpose of arresting is to send a message to the people, especially journalists, to be quiet and don’t get out of line. If we, the people, allow the government to control us through fear, we are no longer free, we are no longer America.

The arrest of is meant to send a message to all Americans and journalists: be quiet, behave, toe the line. Or you will pay the price.

In their daily brief this morning, Human Rights Watch notes:

SNY analyst Ron Darling won’t be on the network’s Mets broadcasts for a while thanks to health issues. Bob Nightengale of USA Today broke the news Saturday night, citing Darling’s friends. And those friends mentioned this was about health concerns, not the lawsuit Darling’s facing from former Mets’ teammate Lenny Dykstra: New York Mets broadcaster […]

          Unpardonable sins      Comment   Translate Page
Jonathan Turley opines in USA Today,
Assange committed the unpardonable sins of embarrassing the establishment — from members of Congress to intelligence officials to the news media.

...For years, the public has debated what Assange is: journalist, whistleblower, foreign agent, dupe. The problem is that Assange is first and foremost a publisher.

Moreover, he was doing something that is usually heralded in the news media. WikiLeaks disclosed disclosed controversial intelligence and military operations. It later published emails that showed that the Democratic National Committee and the campaign of Hillary Clinton lied in various statements to the public, including the rigging of the primary for her nomination. No one has argued that any of these emails were false. They were embarrassing. Of course, there is no crime of embarrassing the establishment, but that is merely a technicality.

...A glimpse of that artificial scope was seen within minutes of the arrest. CNN brought on its national security analyst, James Clapper, former director of national intelligence. CNN never mentioned that Clapper was accused of perjury in denying the existence of the National Security Agency surveillance program and was personally implicated in the scandal that WikiLeaks triggered.

Clapper was asked directly before Congress, “Does the NSA collect any type of data at all on millions or hundreds of millions of Americans?”

Clapper responded, “No, sir. … Not wittingly.” Later, Clapper said his testimony was “the least untruthful” statement he could make.

That would still make it a lie, of course, but this is Washington and people like Clapper are untouchable. In the view of the establishment, Assange is the problem.

So on CNN, Clapper was allowed to explain (without any hint of self-awareness or contradiction) that Assange has “caused us all kinds of grief in the intelligence community.” Indeed, few people seriously believe that the government is aggrieved about password protection. The grief was the disclosure operations and controversies long unknown to the American people. Assange will be convicted of the felony of causing embarrassment in the first degree.

Notably, no one went to jail or was fired for the surveillance programs. Those in charge of failed congressional oversight were reelected. Clapper was never charged with perjury. Even figures shown to have lied in the Clinton emails, like former CNN commentator Donna Brazile (who lied about giving Clinton’s campaign questions in advance of the presidential debates), are now back on television. Assange, however, could well do time.

With Assange’s extradition, all will be well again in Washington. As Sen. Manchin declared, Assange is their “property” and will be punished for his sins. Once he is hoisted as a wretch, few will again entertain such hubris in the future.

Martin în saga "A Song of Ice and Fire" pe care este bazat scenariul serialului: 'A Game of Thrones' 1996; 'A Clash of Kings' 1999; 'A Storm of Swords' 2000; 'A Feast for Crows' 2005; 'A Dance with Dragons' 2011.

Lori Loughlin walks into court.

Saturday Night Live has had a lot of fun making light of the ongoing college admissions scandal, and this week’s episode was no different. In an elaborate spoof, comedian Kate McKinnon portrays Lori Loughlin, who has been the face of the scandal. Loughlin and her designer husband, Mossimo Giannulli, have been accused of paying thousands of dollars to ensure their daughters were granted a place at the University of Southern California.

They also reportedly presented their daughters as rowing crew recruits, despite the fact that neither girl participated in the sport. The outlook is grim for the celebrity couple, with both of them facing possible jail time for their alleged involvement in the scheme. McKinnon gave viewers a comical depiction of what the actress’s life in jail might look like, according to USA Today.

"The Cardinals Way" with Howard Megdal      Comment   Translate Page

How one team embraced tradition and Moneyball at the same time...

The St. Louis Cardinals have experienced the kind of success that is rare in baseball.  They not only win, but do so with an apparently bottomless pool of talent, one that is mostly homegrown.

“The Cardinal Way” -- a term that has come to represent many things to fans, media, and other organizations, from an ironclad code of conduct to the team’s cutting-edge use of statistics and analytics, and a farm system that has transformed baseball.

In the spirit of “Moneyball,” baseball journalist Howard Megdal takes fans behind the scenes and off the field.  Megdal reveals how the players are assessed and groomed using an unrivaled player development system.  He tells an in-depth, fascinating story about a consistently good franchise, the business of sports in the 21st century, and a team that has learned how to level the playing field, turning in season after successful season.

Howard Megdal has written for “Capital New York,” “Sports Illustrated,” “The New York Times,” and “USA Today,” among others.  His prior books include “The Baseball Talmud” and “Wilpon’s Folly.”

On the first Thursday in March, Howard Megdal led a packed Clubhouse in our captivating conversation about “The Cardinals Way.”  Listen in...

America 1976.  Colorful. Complex. Combustible.

A year of Bicentennial celebrations and presidential primaries, of Olympic glory and busing riots, of “killer bees” hysteria and Pong fever.  For both the nation and the national pastime, the year was revolutionary.

It was the craziest season of baseball’s most colorful decade.  A year which witnessed the “Big Red Machine,” the rise of the “Bronx Zoo”-era New York Yankees, the dismantling of the Oakland A’s dynasty, the onset of full-scale free agency, the outrageous antics of team owners Bill Veeck, Ted Turner, George Steinbrenner, and Charlie Finley -- all set against the star-spangled backdrop of America’s Bicentennial.

“The star of Down to the Last Pitch is Tim Wendel, one of our game’s must-read writers.”

-John Thorn, official historian of Major League Baseball

Never before in baseball history had a team finished last and rallied to take the pennant the following season. Yet in 1991, lightning struck twice as the Minnesota Twins and the Atlanta Braves both reached the World Series.  Four of the games between the Twins and Braves were settled by “walk-off” runs.  Three of them, including the climactic Game Seven, went into extra innings.  And all seven games had memorable moments.

In Down to the Last Pitch, award-winning writer Tim Wendel brings to life these seven memorable games, weaving contemporary interviews with discussions decades later about this classic World Series, and teasing out fact from legend.

Tim Wendel was a founding editor of USA Today's Baseball Weekly, which was in its inaugural season when the 1991 Twins-Braves Series played out.  The highly acclaimed author of 11 books is currently writer-in-residence at Johns Hopkins University.

The first three-time author in the Clubhouse, Tim was previously here with High Heat and Summer of '68.  Listen in to this discussion of Down to the Last Pitch with one of the game's must-read writers...

These 14 states want to get rid of the Electoral College and let the popular vote decide presidential elections      Comment   Translate Page

voting vote election day

  • Since the 18th century, the United States has used the Electoral College, made up of 538 individual electors, to elect its presidents instead of going by the popular vote.
  • The Electoral College has recently come under scrutiny after two presidents in the last 20 years won the Electoral College despite losing the national popular vote.
  • 14 states and the District of Columbia have joined a movement to bypass the Electoral College and join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, in which member states pledge to give all their Electoral College votes to the winner of the popular vote.

  • Visit BusinessInsider.com for more stories.

Since the 18th century, the United States has used the Electoral College, made up of 538 individual electors from 50 states and the District of Columbia who vote on behalf of their states instead of the national popular vote, to elect its presidents.

Every state except Maine and Nebraska uses a "winner take all" system that pledges all the state's Electoral College votes to the candidate that earns more than 50% of the vote. A presidential candidate needs a majority of 270 Electoral College votes to win.

In the past 20 years, the "winner take all" structure of the Electoral College has come under scrutiny after Presidents George W. Bush and Donald Trump were elected by the Electoral College despite losing the popular vote.

While supporters of the Electoral College, including 2020 presidential candidate Andrew Yang, say that it ensures smaller states get adequate representation and aren't ignored in national campaigns, its opponents argue the system has led to un-democratic outcomes.

Read more: You'll hear these 4 arguments in defense of the Electoral College — here's why they're wrong

Now, a growing number of Democratic presidential candidates have come out in favor of scrapping the institution.

A recent INSIDER poll found that 54% of Americans support electing the president by popular vote, with just 30% of respondents preferring the Electoral College.

Since a change to the constitution to get rid of the Electoral College is highly unlikely, some states are taking matters into their own hands to try and bypass the system.

Since 2007, 14 states and the District of Columbia have joined the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, in which member states pledge to give all their Electoral College votes to the nationwide winner of the presidential popular vote — regardless of which candidate wins their own state.

The states already in the compact hold a total of 189 electoral votes, a little over a third of the total Electoral College. The compact will formally go into effect and hold legal weight once states that hold a combined total of 270 Electoral College votes between them join it.

Here are the states that are currently part of the compact:

New Mexico became the most recent state to join the Compact in pledging to give its 5 electoral votes to the winner of the national popular vote in April 2019.

Colorado joined the compact in February 2019, and will give its 9 electoral votes to the popular vote winner.

Delaware, home to potential 2020 contender Joe Biden, also joined the compact earlier in 2019. It has three Electoral College votes.

Bill Crawford: Status Quo Makes No Sense      Comment   Translate Page
Whether you deplore the way the Mississippi Legislature currently operates or you rejoice in its works, change is needed. The status quo makes no sense.

Longtime North Mississippi legislator Hob Bryan set the stage by calling on his Senate colleagues to take back power from the lieutenant governor.

It’s no secret that Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves, and his counterpart in the House, Speaker Philip Gunn, decide what legislation lives and which projects get funded. As Bryan noted, their extraordinary power does not come from the state constitution. Rather, it is gifted to them by all legislators through the Senate and House rules.

Ironically, Reeves and Gunn often exercise this power with little regard for, much less input from, most legislators. For example, the addition of $2 million for private school vouchers was slipped into an unrelated bill at the last minute leaving most legislators in the dark about it. Reeves wanted it added. Gunn rammed it through the House. Done deal.

It is also no secret that much of the legislation championed by these two originates from outside the Mississippi Legislature, often from outside the state.

“Each year, state lawmakers across the U.S. introduce thousands of bills dreamed up and written by corporations, industry groups and think tanks,” reported USA Today. "In all, these copycat bills amount to the nation’s largest, unreported special-interest campaign, driving agendas in every statehouse and touching nearly every area of public policy."

The number one state where this happens? Mississippi.

“Mississippi leads nation in filing legislation that other people wrote,” reported the Clarion-Ledger. “Between 2010 and 2018, Mississippi legislators introduced at least 744 model bills, USA Today found. That’s 200 more model bills than the next highest state.”

The newspaper also reported Sen. Michael Watson, a candidate for Secretary of State, was a top sponsor of model bills in the country.

Among the special interests involved are the infamous Koch brothers and their network of big givers and think tanks. For example, the school voucher program and its state sponsor, Empower Mississippi, and its progenitor, the Mississippi Center for Public Policy, have strong policy and financial links to the Koch network. (PS: Empower Mississippi PAC was able to give Reeves’ campaign $10,000.)

Hmmm.

If so many bills come from outsiders, not from our own legislators, and the lieutenant governor and speaker decide what passes, why do we need 174 legislators? Alaska gets by with 60; Nebraska 49.

Reducing the number of legislators to less than 50 would save millions, shorten sessions, shrink government, and still yield us the same results we get now.

So, if you like current results, a smart change would be to shrink the legislature.

On the other hand, if you don’t like current results, Sen. Bryan’s suggestion to greatly curtail the power given to the lieutenant governor and the speaker makes sense. That would restore the traditional legislative process where members debate and decide on what bills to pass and which projects to fund. And the process would once again rely more on member input than outside special interests.

So, if you don't like current results, a smart change would be to limit the lieutenant governor's and speaker's power.

Either lots fewer non-essential legislators or a fully functioning legislature makes sense, but not the status quo.

Celtics win rock fight against Pacers 84-74, take Game 1 in ugly fashion      Comment   Translate Page

The Boston Celtics overcame a terrible first half performance to storm back and beat the Indiana Pacers 84-74 and take Game 1 of their first round playoff matchup. Call if nerves, call it not having Marcus Smart, call it whatever you want, the C's had a very ugly start, but were able to win a rock fight of a game simply because they have more talent on the roster. It's obviously great to win Game 1, but the Celtics will need to play a lot better if they want a deep postseason run.

After being comically secretive about it leading up to game time, Brad Stevens decided to replace Smart with Jaylen Brown in the starting lineup. Brown has been one of the most consistent players since the All-Star break, and probably the team's best bet to replicate Smart's defense.

The Celtics struggled with turnovers early in the game. Especially on their own home court, that's a tough look for the first playoff game. Indiana was able to capitalize on the sloppy play and take an early 12-6 lead halfway through the first quarter.

After the Pacers opened up an 8-point lead, the Celtics answered with a quick 7-0 run to cut the lead back down to just one. All points in the run came from Marcus Morris (5) and Gordon Hayward (2) off the bench.

Indiana continually tried to switch bigger wings onto Kyrie Irving and post him up on the defensive end, but Kyrie was able to hold his own and even force a few turnovers to get out in transition. Kyrie certainly isn't a defensive dynamo, but he can hold his own when he is engaged.

Morris, after having a pretty rough scoring stretch since the All-Star break, was hitting from everywhere in the first quarter. Morris was the spark that Boston needed in a sloppy stretch of play. Mook scored 12 of the team's first 20 points, knocking down two threes and adding some much-needed grit.

After Boston scored the first points of the second quarter on a nifty Hayward fast break layup, Indiana scored the next nine to take a 7-point lead. The Celtics looked confused on a number of their defensive rotations, and gave the Pacers a number of open looks from beyond the arc, which came back to bite them.

One of the issues on the offensive end was Boston's continued attempts to attack Domantas Sabonis in isolation. After getting the big man switched onto their wings/guards, the Celtics forced drives against him. But Sabonis held his own, and that led to a number of ugly shot attempts.

Even after Stevens inserted Kyrie and Al Horford back into the lineup, the Pacers pushed the lead out to as many as 11 on the back of a 16-5 run. Indiana looked like they wanted the game much more than the C's, and it looked like the Celtics might have taken them a bit lightly.

The Celtics played ugly basketball in the first half. Ten turnovers, just 38 points on 32 percent shooting from the field, and an overall malaise that has, unfortunately, come to personify this team. The Pacers are a tough-playing team, and the Celtics need to be focused and play the right way to get a win. Regular season results mean nothing in the playoffs.

After a few (more) ugly turnovers to start the second half, Horford gave the team a shot of energy with back-to-back post shots, including a spin move reverse and-1 layup, that also gave Thaddeus Young his fourth foul, which sent him to the bench. The Horford charge tied the game at 45-45, and the TD Garden was booming.

While Horford was asserting dominance on the offensive end, the Pacers had gone completely cold to start the third quarter. They missed their first eight shots from the field and didn't score their first points of the second half until a Myles Turner free throw broke the seal 4:58 into the quarter.

Kyrie had his finger prints all over the third quarter run for the C's. He had eight points, two assists, two rebounds, and a couple of great defensive/effort plays in the first nine minutes of the third quarter. At no point was this a beautiful display of basketball from either team, but Kyrie was involved and engaged, and the Boston faithful could feel it.

The Celtics were playing solid basketball, and even opened up a double-digit lead late in the third, but Kyrie picked up his fourth foul and was forced to the bench. With Smart out and Kyrie on the bench, Terry Rozier needed to make an impact to keep the lead.

The Celtics followed up their third quarter performance with a 10-2 run to open the fourth. I don't know if they "flipped the playoff switch," but Boston certainly figured something out in the second half. Kyrie and Morris got the offense going, Aron Baynes and Brown pumped up the defense, and Indiana folded in on themselves.

The Celtics pushed the lead up to 20 points at times in the fourth quarter, and the rest was history. The Pacers just didn't have enough offensive firepower to compete once the Celtics started to make their shots. This was one of the uglier games of the season, but the C's were still able to win big once they figured things out.

David Price tossed seven shutout innings and Xander Bogaerts drove in all four runs as the Red Sox shut out the Orioles 4-0 Sunday afternoon at Fenway Park.

The win was Boston's third in its last four games and fourth in its last six.

Price was magnificent in getting into the win column for the first time in 2019. He scattered three hits and didn't walk a batter while striking out eight before turning things over to the bullpen.

Bogaerts put Boston up 1-0 with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth inning and then slammed a three-run homer to center in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

Bogaerts and J.D. Martinez each had two hits in the win. Andrew Benintendi left the game after fouling a ball off his left foot. X-rays were negative and manager Alex Cora said after the game that Benintendi is day-to-day.

The Red Sox wrap the four-game series up Monday morning at 11:05 AM in the annual Patriots Day game. Hector Velazquez will be on the mound for Boston.
