Senate Supports Moore But Not Cain for Fed       Comment   Translate Page

When looking at the dumpster fire we call the American political environment, I think we can all agree that the last thing we really needed was more Herman Cain. As I explained yesterday in my Senate Republicans Wish the Democrats Could Filibuster Trump’s Nominees piece, the senior GOP leadership in Congress certainly feels that way. They were already begging rank-and-file senators to call the White House and warn them off nominating Cain for a position on the Federal Reserve before Cain called them a “bunch of yahoos” on Wednesday night.

Herman Cain, whose prospects for a seat on the Federal Reserve Board of Governors have grown shaky before President Donald Trump even nominates him, likely gave his detractors in the U.S. Senate more reason to oppose his confirmation with comments at a University of Kansas lecture Wednesday night.

Cain, 73, the long-time business executive and 2012 presidential candidate, warned against the dangers of socialism, renewable energy and Medicare for all. He described the Senate Banking Committee, which would vet him if he were nominated, “as a bunch of yahoos.” He compared the right to health care to the right to own a Cadillac, and said God would decide when it was time to stop using fossil fuels.

“When God is ready for us not to have fossil fuels, he’ll find a way,” the former Godfather Pizza CEO told the audience at the Vickers Lecture Series at School of Business.

Cain also likened himself to Dr. Martin Luther King, and said: “You reach a point in your successful career where making more money isn’t inspiring enough.”

Cain’s reward for those remarks was to learn that his nomination is almost certainly doomed.

A fourth Republican senator announced Thursday that he would oppose Herman Cain if President Trump nominated him to the Federal Reserve Board, all but dooming his potential appointment.

Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), a close Trump ally, told reporters that “if I had to vote right now, there’s no way I could vote for” Cain. The president had floated the businessman for the Fed board last week.

Cramer’s opposition makes him the fourth Republican to denounce Cain’s potential nomination, effectively ending Cain’s chance at confirmation. GOP Sens. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), Cory Gardner (Colo.) and Mitt Romney (Utah) all came out against Cain on Wednesday.

With four of the 53 Senate Republicans opposed to Cain, he would not reach the necessary 51 votes for confirmation without getting support from Democrats, which is unlikely.

I’m not certain, but it looks like perhaps the Senate Republicans are drawing a hard line against Cain so that’ll have some cover to accept the other insane nomination Trump is floating for the Fed.

Stephen Moore may have been held in contempt of court for failing to pay child support and alimony and he may owe more than $75,000 in taxes to the IRS, but that doesn’t seem disqualifying to a lot of Senate Republicans:

“I know Stephen Moore, he’s a smart man, he’s the head of Club for Growth,” said Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL). “We have to do this in regular order, but I think he would probably be a good voice on the Fed. One, he’s got to be nominated first. Second, he’s got to be confirmed.”

“I said, ‘Pay your taxes; pay your support!’” Shelby said, when asked about Moore’s financial problems.

“Stephen is a solid guy, I know Stephen pretty well. I think Stephen has been right about a few things, with regard to the Fed’s treatment of interest rates, especially,” [Sen. Kevin] Cramer said. “I want to hear more about the specific issues surrounding some of his financial situations.”

The North Dakota senator added that he did not see Moore’s run-in with the IRS or the divorce settlement being disqualifying for his nomination if he had cleared up both issues.

So, the way it looks right now, the dumpster fire will get less Herman Cain and more Stephen Moore.

The Bannon Link: Using Trump Playbook to Attack Pope Francis      Comment   Translate Page

Yesterday, I wrote,

Benedict's poisonous letter; Cardinal Sarah's toxic bile: these are part and parcel of a bigger initiative, coordinated and heavily funded by right-wing Catholic money, especially in the U.S., to Trumpize the Catholic church. Bannon is at the very center of this.

I also featured a tweet by Richard Engel of NBC News announcing that NBC is going to do a report on Bannon tomorrow (Sunday, 14 April) with the following focus:

Steve Bannon is on a new crusade to reform the Vatican. Critics say he, and a movement, are using the same playbook that helped President Trump into the White House against @Pontifex.

Now today, the digital edition of The Guardian has been featuring all day long as its lead article a report by Mark Townsend with the title "Steve Bannon 'told Italy's populist leader: Pope Francis is the enemy.'" Townsend writes,

Donald Trump's former chief strategist Steve Bannon advised Italy's interior minister Matteo Salvini to attack the pope over the issue of migration, according to sources close to the Italian far right.
During a meeting in Washington in April 2016, Bannon – who would within a few months take up his role as head of Trump's presidential campaign – suggested the leader of Italy's anti-immigration League party should start openly targeting Pope Francis, who has made the plight of refugees a cornerstone of his papacy.
"Bannon advised Salvini himself that the actual pope is a sort of enemy. He suggested for sure to attack, frontally," said a senior League insider with knowledge of the meeting in an interview with the website SourceMaterial.

 Townsend also notes,

Bannon has steadily been building opposition to Francis through his Dignitatis Humanae Institute, based in a 13th-century mountaintop monastery not far from Rome.
In January 2017, Bannon became a patron of the institute, whose honorary president is Cardinal Raymond Burke, an ultra-conservative who believes organised networks of homosexuals are spreading a "gay agenda" in the Vatican.

In a statement entitled "In the Dark Times," Josh Marshall wrote yesterday,

Over the last three weeks a series of events have taken place which may seem individual but need to be viewed in a joined context. Together they've put us in a much different, darker place as a country.

Yes. And I want to propose that we would be short-sighted if we did not see that, at this same dark time in American political life, the circle around Ratzinger has gone on the attack in the Catholic church — as if emboldened by Trump's recent "victories" (notably, with the handling of the Mueller report) that are propelling the darkness in the U.S. now and emboldening Trump and his allies around the world.

My Email to the Sleazy, Backstabbing POS in the WH, Zion Don.      Comment   Translate Page
Click your shoes together and keep repeating "Israel is our friend and ally, Israel is our ..."

Thought it was time to vent my frustrations with the WORST president in US history, the Israeli ass-kissing backstabbing greedy, worthless POS, 'Zion Don,' AKA Donald Trump.
That Tubby the Grifter was a lying, thieving con artist I knew before he ran for president. Didn't realize how much of an Israeli ass-kissing backstabbing greedy, worthless POS Donny Drump was and still is.

He's broken nearly all every campaign promise to America, violating his oath of office numerous times to Americans, but doing every thing he can for Israel;
Here's the email sent this past week to the WH:
Mr. Trump:

You'll notice that I didn't use the traditional, honorific title of Mr. President, since the word president should only be consigned to someone honorable, loyal, dedicated to America and a decent man, qualities which you DON'T have.

You ran on the slickly designed 'MAGA' platform, giving hope to desperate Americans who are watching their nation's infrastructure fall down around their ears, since not nearly enough money has been dedicated to maintaining that infrastructure. Why? Because every president, at least since JFK was assassinated by Deep State types, has been shoveling tons of money and tons of free weaponry to Israel, including a bottom-feeding POS like you.

That you were a con artist I knew before you ran, but not many did, and now they're paying a terrible price for voting for a Israeli ass-kissing clown like you.

So I have 2 questions: After a long, arduous day of kissing Israeli ass, your lips must be chapped and sore, so what kind of lip motion do you use to get your lips nice and smooth, so they'll be ready for the next day of Israeli ass-kissing? I'm sure your boss, Bibi, demands that your lips stay soft and pliable so that when you plant a big, wet smoochie on his stinking ass, it will fell like his ass is being touched by angel wings.

Question #2: You're allegedly the author of the "The Art of the Deal." So please tell me what kind of deal is an art when you act like Israel's real estate agent and give away what you have NO right to, like Jerusalem and the stolen Golan Heights? My guess is that either the Mossad has some very nasty tapes of you on Epstein's Orgy Island and you're being blackmailed, but more likely, you know if you keep kissing Israeli ass, when you leave the WH, your multi-billion dollar fortune will have at least doubled.

So I'll end this by telling you the truth: You're nothing more than a back-stabbing, Israeli ass-kissing traitor who doesn't give a rat's ass about the Americans you took an oath to protect and help.

I don't know if there is a Hell, but if there is, after you leave this plane of existence, I know where you'll reside.

Goodbye ASSHOLE

Greg Bacon

'Zion Don' is a crafty con artist, but the obvious fact that you or your shell companies went bankrupt SIX--magical Kabbalah number--times as a multi-billionaire reeks of foulness.

One doesn't operate in NYC with Wall Street (((banksters))) unless they're playing the long con and now the chits are due and you're servicing your Israeli and American Jew Masters terrifically, while you ignore that America's infrastructure is falling down around our ears, like the recent Missouri River dam that burst and wiped out farmers in Nebraska and Iowa, mainly due to lack of maintenance.

Or maybe of those Mossad CCTV recordings, made while you visited your Buddy Jeff Epstein on what would become to known as 'Orgy Island' are so disgusting and filthy that you'd do ANYTHING to keep that out of the (((MSM)))?

Or maybe your religion is Mammonism and you'd do ANYTHING to increase your wealth, and a heartless, soulless, murderous POS traitor like you, should be no problem how many Americans--who you swore to protect--get fucked big time, anything for your Israeli/American Jew buddies, right?

Any comment Zion Don, or is your mouth too busy smooching some multi-billionaire like Sheldon Adelson?

Or maybe you're just a total dumbass, who brags about the "The Art of the Deal," who gives away stolen land to Israel, land that he has not

Remember what your Mother taught you, never speak while you have a mouth full of food, in this case, Kosher approved cock, Donny Drumpf.

P.S. If I go offline suddenly, you'll now why.

America deserved better than Nancy Pelosi      Comment   Translate Page
A number of us knew Nancy Pelosi was not the Speaker of the House the country needed -- or deserved.  Some didn't want to get honest about that.  Can they get honest now?  Whoopi, Cher, all of you who don't really follow reality, you still standing by your support for Nancy?

Have no fear insurance, pharma and medical conglomerates, will eviscerate and destroy , you own her and most of ⁦⁩.

John Stauber is highlighting this SLUDGE article that notes:

A top hospital lobbyist told a room of health care executives this week not to worry about “Medicare for All” and suggested that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) won’t let the idea come up for a vote during the current Congress.
Tom Nickels, the American Hospital Association’s (AHA) executive vice president for government relations, spoke at the organization’s annual conference on Monday, a day before Pelosi addressed the same Washington, D.C. ballroom.
Although Nickels said that President Donald Trump and the Republican-controlled Senate would never support the idea of a government-run universal health care system, he predicted Pelosi also will work to block Medicare for All legislation, in hopes of protecting moderate Democrats in swing districts.
Again, we deserved better than Nancy.  She's not going to fight for what America needs.  She's 'left' only to those who don't know better or who are centrists.

Closing with C.I.'s "Iraq snapshot:"

Friday, April 12, 2019.  Lie about Iraq and get promoted or hired (Kevin Drum got hired by MOTHER JONES), tell the truth and get arrested like Julian Assange.

Yesterday, the founder and publisher of WIKILEAKS, Julian Assange, was arrested in London.  Why?

That's a multi-answer.  Some have cried "treason!"  Julian Assange is an Australian citizen, as such he cannot commit treason against the United States.  He is a publisher and the news he publishes makes the powerful uncomfortable.

For the US government, the first extreme bit of discomfort came on Monday April 5, 2010, when WIKILEAKS released  military video of a July 12, 2007 assault in Iraq. 12 people were killed in the assault including two REUTERS journalists Namie Noor-Eldeen and Saeed Chmagh.  Not only was the US government responsible for that attack, they were responsible for the lies and the coverup that followed.  When WIKILEAKS published the video, the truth was known.

Legal scholar Jonathan Turley (USA TODAY) explains:

He is our property.” Those celebratory words of Sen. Joe Manchin (D, W.V.) came on CNN soon after the news of the arrest of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange at the Ecuadorian embassy in London. It was a sentiment shared by virtually everyone in Washington from Congress to the intelligence services. Assange committed the unpardonable sins of embarrassing the establishment — from members of Congress to intelligence officials to the media. And he will now be punished for our sins. Despite having significant constitutional arguments to be made, it is likely that he will be stripped of those defenses and even barred from raising the overall context of his actions in federal court. What could be the most important free speech and free press case in our history could well be reduced to the scope and substance of an unauthorized computer access case.

Moreover, he was doing something that is usually heralded in the media. He disclosed a massive and arguably unconstitutional surveillance program by the United States impacting virtually every citizen. He later published emails that showed that the Democratic National Committee and the campaign of Hillary Clinton lied in various statements to the public, including the rigging of the primary for her nomination. No one has argued that any of these emails were false. They were embarrassing. Of course, there is not crime of embarrassing the establishment but that is merely a technicality.

WSWS observes:

For its part, the establishment media, which functions as an arm of the state, has jumped in to support the attack on Assange.
On Thursday evening, the editorial boards of the New York Times and the Washington Post issued statements supporting Assange’s extradition. “The government charged Julian Assange, founder of WikiLeaks, not with publishing classified government information, but with stealing it,” declared the New York Times, adding, “The administration has begun well by charging Mr. Assange with an indisputable crime.”
The Washington Post was even more open in its support of the Trump administration’s campaign against Assange, declaring “Mr. Assange’s case could conclude as a victory for the rule of law, not the defeat for civil liberties of which his defenders mistakenly warn.”
“Mr. Assange is not a free-press hero,” declares the Post. “Unlike real journalists, WikiLeaks dumped material into the public domain.” By the Post’s definition, the only “real journalists” are those that self-censor at the behest of the Pentagon.

These newspapers, which once published the Pentagon Papers, are nothing but apologists for US imperialism. One can only imagine the howls of outrage that would issue from the media if it was the Russian government that had carried out the forcible seizure and arrest of a journalist and critic of its foreign policy!

US House Rep Tulsi Gabbard, who is seeking the Democratic Party's presidential nomination, Tweeted the following:

Assange Arrest: The message is clear. To journalists and all Americans, if you try to take away our power, you will pay a high price.

The purpose of arresting is to send a message to the people, especially journalists, to be quiet and don’t get out of line. If we, the people, allow the government to control us through fear, we are no longer free, we are no longer America.

The arrest of is meant to send a message to all Americans and journalists: be quiet, behave, toe the line. Or you will pay the price.

In their daily brief this morning, Human Rights Watch notes:

The extradition of Julian Assange fr

Brazil’s Far-Right President Says Holocaust Crimes Can Be Forgiven, Not Forgotten      Comment   Translate Page

Jair Bolsonaro speaks during a press conference.

Brazil’s far-right President Jair Bolsonaro believes that Holocaust crimes can be forgiven, but not forgotten, The Hill reports.

Bolsonaro’s controversial comments come only days after his visit to the Yad Vashem World Holocaust Remembrance Center in Jerusalem. The Brazilian president visited the center together with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“We can forgive, but we cannot forget. That quote is mine. Those who forget their past are sentenced not to have a future,” Bolsonaro said.

But making outrageous statements is not out of the ordinary for the far-right leader.

Bolsonaro recently came under fire for suggesting that Nazism is a left-wing ideology. The Brazilian president argued that the fact that the National Socialist German Workers’ Party — commonly referred to as the Nazi Party — had the word “socialism” in its name means that Nazism is a left-wing movement.

iStock/Thinkstock(WASHINGTON) -- The U.S. Capitol’s overnight custodial staff allege they were sexually harassed, exposed to pornography in lawmakers’ offices and overheard conversations in which others were being harassed, according to a watchdog investigation into 10 years of sexual harassment reports in the Architect of the Capitol, the office responsible for maintenance and operations on Capitol Hill.

In a report submitted to Congress by the Office of the Inspector General, Architect of the Capitol staff said they often do not speak up about inappropriate behavior for fear of retaliation. One staffer reported no one had an answer for them when they asked during sexual harassment prevention training, "what happens if the harasser is a member of Congress?"

The report doesn't specify how many complaints about lawmakers were filed.

Congress asked the inspector general in October to look into years-worth of sexual harassment reports within the Architect of the Capitol, and whether that office was handling the cases properly.

The inspector general found there were 57 reports of sexual harassment over a decade. The report notes this number of reports is low for a workforce the size of the Architect of the Capitol , although it also acknowledges fear of retaliation could lead employees to choose not to report their experiences.

The report also found there is a "widespread perception that sexual harassment is a pervasive problem” within the Architect of the Capitol and the investigators attribute that perception to "lingering cultural bias."

The report highlighted the Architect of the Capitol for appearing “to be energetic in its efforts to improve the agency culture and create an environment of civility" and that "the results of our inquiry were primarily positive, with the majority of identified gaps already receiving the attention” of department officials.

Still, problems remain.

Employees said they don't trust the process to report harassment, and the avenues to report are overly complicated.

One staffer said “The whole system is [designed] to protect the Architect of the Capitol, EEO, Office of Compliance or any other assistance under this Agency."

Oakland's liberal mayor attacks Trump over immigration policies. Trump swings back with defiant challenge.      Comment   Translate Page

President Donald Trump and Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf (D) traded barbs on social media Saturday over the president's controversial immigration policies.

What's the background?

Last week, the Washington Post revealed top White House aides once considered releasing detained migrants in "sanctuary cities," which are almost exclusively Democratic-led progressive cities. Trump later confirmed he is considering enacting the policy.

In fact, White House deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley told Fox News' Jeanine Pirro Saturday that the administration is actively working with Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials to begin sending illegal immigrants to sanctuary cities.

"They have said they wanted all of these illegal aliens into their communities," Gidley said. "We're working with DHS, we're working with ICE, to try and make sure that happens because after all, it's what they want. They should not say 'This is retribution politically,' they should say, 'This is an olive branch.'"

What happened between Trump and Schaaf?

After the Washington Post revealed the proposed policy, Schaaf, in an interview with KTVU-TV, called the policy idea an "outrageous abuse of power," characterized it as un-American, and said the Trump administration essentially proposed using human beings as "instruments of political payback."

In a separate interview with CNN, Schaaf similarly denounced the proposed policy, but added that she is "proud to be the mayor of a sanctuary city."

Trump hit back at Schaaf on Saturday, questioning why non-sanctuary cities should be forced to carry the burden of caring for illegal immigrants when sanctuary cities already welcome them.

Schaaf swung back, accusing the president of "fanning hate and division."

About 30 minutes later, Trump responded by declaring the legal right to release illegal immigrants in sanctuary cities while demanding, perhaps tongue-in-cheek, that California, a liberal safe haven, accept them.

Schaaf did not respond to Trump's last tweet.

Twice failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton tells Dems how they should campaign to beat Trump      Comment   Translate Page

Hillary Clinton, the former secretary of state who ran two failed presidential campaigns, recently offered Democrats running for president advice on how to best campaign against President Donald Trump.

Clinton's advice came despite her loss to Trump in 2016.

What did Clinton say?

Speaking with CNN's Fareed Zakaria at Tina Brown's Women in the World summit Friday, Clinton offered Democrats running for president two pieces of advice.

"You really have to do two things simultaneously — and it's challenging," Clinton said.

"You do have to present what you want to do," she explained. "What is your vision? What is your hope for our country? How do you see the future? What are you going to propose that will make a difference in the lives of Americans and maintain the values, the ideas of America in a very complex world?"

"So, you bare that responsibility. At the same time," Clinton continued, "you have to be able to counter and ignore where possible, respond where necessary, to the diversion and distraction that we see working, unfortunately, by the current incumbent in the White House."

Zakaria also asked Clinton to respond to comments from South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg, who is running for the Democratic nomination and recently told Washington Post magazine about Trump, "at least he didn't go around saying that America was already great, like Hillary did."

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Clinton responded: "I don't want to comment on any of the candidates. Like I said, I think they have a lot to contribute not only to the Democratic party, but to the country. And it will be up to voters to decide who our nominee is."

However, she later went on to criticize Bernie Sanders' Medicare-for-All proposal, which would reportedly cover illegal immigrants.

"The specifics, though, matter," Clinton said. "What are the details? How do we pay for it? Who is going to get what they need? There are a lot of complicated questions."

Making outrageous statements is not out of the ordinary for the far-right leader.

Bernie: the Perfect Democratic Socialist Candidate      Comment   Translate Page

Bernie Sanders hit the campaign trail last week. In between rants about President Trump he was busy defending his Millionaire Democratic Socialist status:

"I didn't know it was a crime to write a good book, which turned out to be a best-seller,” the 2020 Democratic presidential candidate told a crowd in Gary, Indiana.

“If you write a best-selling book, you can be a millionaire, too,” he told the newspaper.

Better yet, get an unrepentant terrorist to ghost write it for you and you can be President!

If I may, I’d like to add a tag-a-long to Bernie’s millionaire humble-brag: I didn’t know it was a crime to build a real estate portfolio either. Even if it turns out to be an empire. In fact, “if you build an empire, you can be a billionaire, too.”

This is America, after all. I note that Bernie doesn’t take exception to that when he’s the one benefiting from our economic system. The rest of the time he continues to yap about everyone else paying his fair share.

I think Bernie is the perfect Democratic Socialist candidate.

NPR and Assange/Wikileaks      Comment   Translate Page

I've been listening to National Public Radio's coverage this week on the arrest of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange and the reporting has generally been abysmal. In other words, it has been par for the course.

At least four things have stood out to me in the NPR  coverage I have heard. First, the NPR reporting on the withdrawn (but possibly soon-to-be resumed) Swedish sexual assault investigation has consistently failed to fully report Assange's position. As Wired noted nearly two years ago: "Assange has always maintained that extradition to Sweden was a thin ruse intended to make him vulnerable to further extradition to the United States, where it's widely believed that a secret grand jury for years was investigating him for WikiLeaks-related crimes." (I offer no judgment on the veracity of Assange's protestations that he was innocent of the Swedish allegations.)

Second, the range of guests NPR has hosted on the Assange segments has generally run the gamut from "I don't like Assange much" to "I really dislike the treacherous Assange". For instance, on the day Assange was arrested NPR interviewed Leon Panetta, secretary of defense and CIA director during Obama administration.

(NPR thought it not worth mentioning that Panetta was also Bill Clinton's OMB director and, later, chief of staff or that Panetta endorsed Hillary Clinton in 2016. Less than three months before the election, Panetta also went to bat for her regarding alleged Clinton Foundation improprieties during her tenure as Secretary of State. In 2017, Clinton blamed Wikileaks, in part, for her 2016 loss to Donald Trump. And why mention that less than a year ago the DNC filed a lawsuit against Wikileaks?)

Predictably, Panetta is in favor of the extradition and prosecution of Assange: "So I think ... as a result of the impact of releasing this classified information that he ought to be subject to the laws of the United States and face our system of justice." He also raised the Clinton defeat: "Well, there's no question that there was a huge amount of attention, particularly to WikiLeaks and the impact of WikiLeaks on the 2016 election. There's no question that as a result of the information that he was able to release, it had a huge impact in terms of our politics ..." In response to a question about a recent Tweet by Edward Snowden on Assange's arrest, Panetta avoided commenting on the substance of Snowden's position and launched an ad hominem attack.

Third, NPR on-air personalities and guests have repeatedly made (or declined to challenge the accuracy or relevance of) the claim that Assange/Wikileaks are not covered by the 1st Amendment because they allegedly released classified material without redactions of sensitive material.

Just today, NPR hosted former CIA deputy director John McLaughlin, who asserted Assange is not a "legitimate journalist", in part, because Assange allegedly declined to redact material that "mainstream journalists" wanted him to remove and, further, that Assange wouldn't even listen "to that case [for redactions]". McLaughlin makes this claim twice in the segment and it is never challenged.

I am unaware of any "not enough redactions" exception to the freedom of the press. Moreover, in October 2010, CNN reported:
With the posting of 400,000 classified documents from the Iraq war, WikiLeaks has shown a much heavier hand redacting compared to its previous publication of documents.

After the leak in July of more than 70,000 Afghanistan War documents, the website was heavily criticized by the U.S. government, the military and human rights groups for failing to redact names of civilians in the documents, putting them at risk of retaliation by the Taliban.
Assange's role in the alleged failure to redact names in the July leak is not discussed in the CNN article, which does go on to say concerning later releases: "An initial comparison of a few documents redacted by WikiLeaks to the same documents released by the Department of Defense shows that WikiLeaks removed more information from the documents than the Pentagon" (emphasis added). Yep, Wikileaks apparently withheld more information than the US military but you're not likely to learn that on NPR.

In the same piece CNN also reported: "Even with redaction, the Pentagon is critical of the documents' release, saying the site had no right to publish and is not equipped to understand what information is harmful." This seems to suggest that Wikileaks failure to redact what the military wanted redacted was due to incompetence or negligence, not malice. In any case, where does the 1st Amendment require journalists to keep secret what the government wants kept secret?

Finally, it is striking that NPR's coverage has featured very little discussion of the substance of the actual charges against Assange' let alone the substance of the material Chelsea Manning provided for Wikileaks to publish (see e.g. the video below). The unsealed federal grand jury indictment is only seven pages long and pretty straightforward but NPR has instead covered ancillary issues, such as Assange's cat, with the seeming goal of smearing and convicting Assange in the court of public opinion.

Assange's purported crime appears to be agreeing to help Manning crack a government password (Indictment, para. 7). However, the indictment also indicates that Assange's assistance did not extend to him actively accessing a restricted government computer system. Thus, paragraph 9 of the indictment speaks of "the portion of the password Manning gave to Assange". At first glance this seems analogous to asking Assange, from afar, for help opening a physical combination safe. It's akin to Assange saying "try this combination" while not turning the dial himself or even being in the same room.

If it's illegal for a journalist to help someone from afar break the password of a computer file or crack a safe then would it also be illegal to open/unseal a stolen envelope clearly marked "Top Secret" and containing classified material or turn the pages of a stolen document clearly marked "Top Secret"? What about helping to decipher an encrypted text? If not, why not? What's the substantive difference between these acts?

To be clear, if Assange sat at a keyboard and unlawfully attempted to access classified files while they were still stored on a government system then that would seem to be an overt, illegal act. However, that's not what Assange is accused of doing.

He is accused of conspiring to help Chelsea Manning do that and, under the particular circumstances, that seems a little fuzzier, especially when something as important as the 1st Amendment is in play. But as Glenn Greenwald puts it:
Neither the most authoritarian factions of the Trump administration behind this prosecution, nor their bizarre and equally tyrannical allies in the Democratic Party, care the slightest about press freedoms. They only care about one thing: putting Julian Assange behind bars, because (in the case of Trump officials) he revealed U.S. war crimes and because (in the case of Democrats) he revealed corruption at the highest levels of the DNC that forced the resignation of the top 5 officials of the Democratic Party and harmed the Democrats’ political reputation.
