Book safes are an age old way to stash one’s treasures–the key to a safe, a private document, a flask, cash, jewelry and of course… secret love letters. And you can use them while traveling to hide your ipod, back up cash, or other valuables from would-be thieves. And of course if you end up wrongfully imprisoned, they work as an excellent place to stash a rock hammer for tunneling your way to freedom. Not only are book safes fun to possess, they also make a cool, unique gift.

First some considerations when looking for a book safe. The whole point is to conceal something from prying eyes, so be careful what book safe you choose. You don’t want it to stand out in your book case. If this is for yourself, choose a book that will fit in on your shelf. If you’ve got a shelf full of new mystery paperbacks, a large vintage medical textbook will look suspicious and out of place. Additionally, consider picking a book that people aren’t likely to pull off your shelf out of curiosity. Think “The Economic History of Kazakhstan” instead of “The Secrets of Better Sex”. But if you’re giving the book safe as a gift, choose a volume that suits the personality and interests of the intended recipient. For Whom the Bell Tolls for Dad; Nancy Drew for little sis.

Now about my book safes, what makes them different?
Usually I use upcycled used books, not new. This allows the wear and tear of a book add to the charm of your safe while lending a bit of charm to your collection. Besides, cutting up a new, unread book defeats the original purpose of that literary masterpiece. Think of it as a second life for a book that has been enjoyed.
Unlike many home crafted book safes, I have added a few construction design upgrades of my own. Learning from my woodworking experience I experimented and came up with the following improvements. (Technically, a book is “wood” so this is not too much of a departure from what I usually craft.
#1 – These safes have been crafted with “natural” page edges. Meaning that I do not just coat the outer, exposed page edges with a layer of glue. My safes actually appear to be an unaltered book when closed. You can actually thumb the pages and they separate along the edge, just like a regular book.
#2 – Internal reinforcements. In larger, thicker books, I have found a way to insert metal pins that keep the book safe square and ridged. These metal pins are totally concealed. Some other book safes tend to “droop” since so much of the internal page material removed to create the cavity.

Note: Any props in the pictures are NOT INCLUDED. Electronics, cash, jewelry and other items are used to demonstrate scale of the book and compartment.

Consumer vehicles today are rolling off the line with all kinds of teched-out features. Some of them are questionable, like screens on your dashboard that let you watch movies while you drive or cars that let you turn them on remotely from a hundred feet away. Some are actually really useful. The backup camera, for one, which has saved the butts of millions of drivers everywhere who never learned how to parallel park properly.

That doesn't mean you should go running to buy a new Tesla, per se. (Besides, they need to get that pricing locked down.) Maybe you like your old-school analog vehicle with the chrome rims and butter-smooth transmission. That's no reason to forego a tech add-on though. Read more...

As these flight features evolve, your car will be continuously upgraded through over-the-air software updates.

Let's assume the same batteries are used in a long-range electric bus: just a bit more range than needed for daily work, slow charge at night. Let's assume the bus is used 350 days per year (counting some maintenance). Buses often reach 600,000 to 800,000 km over a long lifetime of 18 years (common worst case). But, 18 years also represents about 6300 nearly complete charging cycles. That's 4.2 times more than these Tesla batteries can sustain (1500). These batteries are completely unsuitable for bus use.

Dipecat Elon Musk, Pria Ini Malah Direkrut Orang Terkaya Dunia      Comment   Translate Page

Tesla PHK 150 Pegawainya Lagi, Ada Apa?

As electric cars become more pervasive (hello, Tesla Model 3), the potential stress on the country's electric grid increases. Many local utilities now offer Time of Use (TOU) plans to encourage consumers to shift their electricity usage from times of peak demand to times of low demand. TOU plans typically offer discounted rates on electricity used off-peak (normally at night or weekends) and surcharges on electricity used during peak hours (typically during the day on weekdays). But there are other ways to encourage a shift to off-peak power usage. One of these ways is the SmartCharge NY program

Analyzing CES 2012      Comment   Translate Page

Originally posted on: http://tostringtheory.com/evjen/archive/2012/01/15/analyzing-ces-2012.aspx

I just got back from the Consumer Electronics Show 2012 (CES) which was held in Las Vegas. This is a good show for me and the company that I work for as it shows us some of the possible future trends of digital media consumption. Things presented at CES may just come and go and be quickly forgotten, but at the same time, there are definite themes on the conference that companies need to pay attention to.

3D is so yesterday!

This was actually the second CES that I have been to and both were focused on different themes as it seemed to me. Last year’s CES was really all about 3D TVs and even some companies trying to show up the others with glassless 3D TVs. It was amazing to me how much hype there was around 3D televisions at the 2011 CES. The press was really all over this.

For me, I never really enjoyed the presentations on 3D TVs. I wear glasses and everything is tough for me to view on these TVs. My eyes strained constantly and watered when I watched. It was always an uncomfortable experience for me to view these types of TVs. There were many instances in watching 3D that you had to be perfectly positioned for the best picture. This approach obviously won’t work that well in the home. The glassless 3D televisions were the absolute worst when it came to positioning yourself in front of the TV. Being off a bit for a glassless television meant that you could almost be certain of a migraine.

As far as 2012, there really wasn’t that much in the way of 3D. Don’t get me wrong, it was there, but all the hype was gone. The reason is that it hasn’t really taken off in the public market. More people are gravitating to HD, LED, and Smart TVs while not getting to excited about 3D. The new 3D TVs would be fine if you are a massive movie buff and want to watch your 3D movies a lot, but in my opinion, they don’t fit in that well with the average home TV usage. Most people watch TV in a social setting, with others, their eyes moving from the people they are talking to and back to the television in constant glances. People are walking in and out of the room to stir the macaroni on the stovetop or something similar. This doesn’t make for a great 3D television experience. I think people like 3D – but they would rather have this experience in the theater rather than in the home.

So what is new in 3D? Well for one, there was some hype on better looking 3D glasses.

These glasses were being showcased in the LG booth. There were also quite a wide variety of other styles from some designer brands (e.g. Oakley, Alain Mikli, etc).

OLED TVs! I want one now!

imageWell, the thing that got me the most excited on the TV front was the new OLED TVs. These TVs are so thin (we were seeing them at 4mm thick!). They are also incredible bright and clear. Do you remember that experience when you saw HD for the first time and wondered how that was even possible? Well, looking at OLED was almost as good as that experience. It is considerably better than the HD TVs of today. The picture quality was amazing and the photos/videos here wouldn’t do it any justice.

This video doesn’t do the quality justice. It was way way better than this.

Even though, this is a video I took of the LG OLED TV. Here is a shot of the thinness of the TV (at 4mm thick) at the Samsung booth:

Smart TV Fight!

The entire smart TV arena is really starting to come to a battle on direction. First you have the television companies themselves working to bring apps and the entire application model to the television set. The TV companies are creating their own app world. You have Sony, LG, Philips, Samsung, and others working to create an application model that is good for them and their users. Originally there were TV companies that really had a walled-garden approach to their app world. Some of the companies would only allow their own company to supply the apps that were on the TV. But now, there was a lot of movement at CES to include SDKs so that application developers can build apps specifically for their TVs (some working in private clouds only).

By far the leader in this market is Samsung. They have been letting developers specifically develop for their TVs for some time now (really more than anyone else). They also have an SDK that is easy to use and get up to speed with. Samsung has a tremendous amount of support as well for the developers from their website. But with this new found love for the application developer from the TV companies, it is still very difficult for the app dev. It isn’t as if you are going to build a single instance of your application and then have the ability to get this application to work across all the TVs. In fact, you are going to be doing some serious work to build TV-specific applications where some of the TVs might have the APIs that you are looking for to complete your application while others fall considerably short. What is a TV application developer to do? Well – Google TV might be the answer.

Google TV was released in 2010 and basically the street thought that it failed right away. The UI was considered not that well designed and it was tough for the end user to figure out how to navigate through the application. Google then went back to the drawing board and came out in CES with their new Google TV.

I was really impressed with what they have designed. With Google TV, you will have access to the Android Market for applications that can be placed on your television. At this moment there are only about 150 applications that have been specifically designed for the TV, but they are their way.

The absolute best thing for TV application developers is that they can now build a single application for the TV and be agnostic to the underlying TV. This is really what the industry needs at the end of the day for maximum innovation and growth. I would think that the best approach for the television companies is to create an experience on top of Google TV so that it isn’t a vanilla branded version of Google TV. With this, they can do more that works specifically with their hardware while at the same time allowing end users to reach out to the application market. At CES, there were TV companies that were hedging their bets and showcasing both their own Smart TVs with their own environment, while also showcasing Google TV versions of their TVs.

The ability to work with TVs in an agnostic fashion as a TVappDev is also possible with some of these smart TV overriders such as Roku and Boxee. All in all, the Smart TV world is taking off and by 2015 most TVs sold will be smart TVs. It is pretty exciting and this will dramatically change the ways in which we are entertained. I look forward to these coming changes.

Concept Cars

Ok – I don’t work with cars as part of my job, but who doesn’t like to look at concept cars? CES had some neat ones:

Summary

I did enjoy myself at CES this year. There was some cool things and strange things as well. Some of those things included:

  • An alien from the upcoming Men In Black 3 walking the floor
  • Every booth selling something that was tied to an iPad in some fashion (iPads were EVERYWHERE!)
  • The new Galaxy Note (nice)
  • A section of a booth showing the new Walkman (huh?)
  • The new Sony and Nokia phones (Sony was using Android and Nokia was using Windows 7)
  • The Tesla car … (my photos were no good)

See you there next year!

In reply to Tesla's plan for robotaxi service with off-lease cars is brilliant

I doubt very many people will sign up for these leases at these prices. If they do, yes, it's a great deal for Tesla. But it's a great deal for Tesla because it's a rip-off for lessees.

Moreover, I think Tesla is going to succeed tremendously if they can build a robotaxi in just a few years, whether they run this lease program or not. No robotaxi company is going to be creating even 100,000 cars per year, at anywhere near $35,000 a car, in just a few years. If Tesla can run a robotaxi service with its current production Model 3 cars (even if it's only with $10,000 in modifications), they're going to be an extremely successful company.

I think it's hard to predict whether or not this will happen. As you point out, "Tesla Autopilot is not yet even close to where Waymo was 6 years ago." But Tesla's approach is very very different from Waymo's. Waymo is building a robocar that is meant to work only in locations where it has been thoroughly tested beforehand. Tesla, if they're actually trying to build a robocar, is apparently trying to build a robocar that works virtually anywhere that people safely and legally drive their Teslas. If they succeed, the growth will be very sudden, especially from the view of an outsider. The cars will go from disastrous performance to superhuman performance as quickly as AlphaGo (against a 9-dan without handicaps) went from disastrous performance to unbeatable performance. But it's very hard to predict when and if they will succeed.

Toyota has been doing EVs and bits of them for years. The air compressor in a Model S? Toyota part. IGBT's? Toyota parts. Who's pioneering silicon carbide IGBT's for max efficiency on road? Still Toyota. Panasonic batteries? Toyota company. PHEVs? EVs with an ICE. FCVs? EVs with a fuel cell. Early investor in Tesla? Toyota. etc etc Toyota maintains a fantastic view of the world - in every market they compete in they assess energy security over the next hundred years. They have it for us too. They develop tech that suits all markets and then simply roll it out when required and not one second before. When Toyota finally does decide to bring EVs to market, all other players will hope they're sitting down. The Japanese government has a strong initiative on hydrogen right now to replace nuclear. So be it. A quick google on 'toyota' and 'hydrogen economy' will dredge up some good presos on that much. @LHC there isn't anything wrong with subsidies either to get an economy, product or technology started. The US government is right to try, and Toyota (with it's very significant R&D reserves in the space and huge market reach in every segment) is right not to get mixed up in it just yet. Neither are wrong. Not long distances/high loads - FCV wins unless there's a breakthrough in battery tech. The first time I came back I remember looking at my Myki and wondering how we'd managed to ass it up this much

@ ETF Ich habe Emerging und All World.           Boeing's problems are mounting and things are going to get worse before they get better (BA)      Comment   Translate Page

Boeing 737 Max train

  • Boeing has been through a tough month as it faces a bevy of lawsuits and investigations.
  • However, it may have even more serious and fundamental issues to confront such as fixing the design flaw in 737 Max, regaining the trust of passengers and crew, and maybe even coming up with a replacement for the 737 Max.
  • The global fleet of 371 Boeing 737 Max airliners have been grounded since the crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET302.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

It's been a tough 30 days for Boeing. In the month since the tragic crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET302, the American aviation giant has seen its hot-selling 737 Max airliner grounded, its stock plunged 10%, and its reputation tarnished by the scandal.

Boeing admitted last week that a faulty sensor triggered the 737 Max's Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System or MCAS on both the Lion Air Flight JT610 and the Ethiopian Airlines plane. The system's activation precipitated nose dives that likely led to both crashes.

"The 737 Max grounding and what we are learning from it shows that this is not the typical airplane accident we've seen in the past and this is not the typical airplane grounding we've seen recently," Henry Harteveldt, travel industry analyst and founder of Atmosphere Research Group, told Business Insider. "This is a very serious problem for Boeing and a big problem for the airline operators and a problem I don't think will be easy to fix."

Read more: Boeing's reputation has been stained by the 737 Max, and it's going to have to fight to convince people the plane is safe.

This week, Boeing investors filed a proposed class-action lawsuit in Chicago alleging the company defrauded its shareholders by failing to reveal potential safety shortcomings of the 737 Max airliner after two fatal crashes in five months.

Lawyers representing the 346 victims of Lion Air Flight JT610 and the Ethiopian crash have filed multiple suits against Boeing.

Boeing 737 MAXAt the same time, the airlines whose 371 grounded 737 Max are sitting in storage collecting dust have initiated compensation proceedings to collect damages from Boeing.

Boeing's troubles are mounting and things are going to get worse before it gets better.

Design trouble

The US Department of Transportation has commenced an audit on how the Federal Aviation Administration managed to certify the 737 Max to fly with substantial control issues.

Boeing and the FAA's cozy relationship has come under scrutiny from members of Congress.

Certification issues aside, Boeing will have to answer for the design flaw that is at the heart of the controversy surrounding the 737 Max in the coming weeks and months.

To fit the Max's larger, more fuel-efficient engines, Boeing had to position the engine farther forward and up. This change disrupted the plane's center of gravity and caused the Max to have a tendency to tip its nose upward during flight, increasing the likelihood of a stall. In response, Boeing created MCAS as a software fix to automatically counteract that tendency and point the nose of the plane down when the plane's angle-of-attack (AOA) sensor triggers a warning.

"MCAS was a band-aid that infected the wound instead of healing it," Ross Aimer, an aviation consultant and former Boeing 787 training captain, said in an interview with Business Insider.

Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 Max 8 ET AVJOne of the most confounding issues with MCAS is that it can be triggered by a single AOA sensor even though there are two on the plane. This is a departure from Boeing standard operating procedure which normally calls for a dual point of failure.

"Since you have two (AOA sensors) in order to get certified, why not use them, I just don't understand it," aviation consultant and former aeronautical engineer Robert Mann told Business Insider in an interview.

"From a design perspective, it doesn't make any sense."

Pilots and passengers don't trust the 737 Max

One of the 737 Max's greatest selling points was the idea that it could be easily integrated into existing 737 fleets with minimal additional training. Since the 737 has long been one of the most dependable airplanes in the world, this congruency helped make the 737 Max a hot seller.

However, the 737 Max is a very different plane from the 737NG it replaced. It has new engines mounted in a different location, redesigned wings, and new avionics. These are all things the pilots knew about.

What they didn't know was that MCAS had been installed on the 737 Max. Pilots found out about MCAS being on the plane after the Lion Air 737 Max crash into the Java Sea on October 28.

Boeing 737 Max 8 cockpit"Boeing in the past always told the pilots and airlines exactly what was on those airplanes," Aimer said. "I have been a Boeing pilot for over 50 years and have loved their products, but they have lost my trust."

Aimer, who is the CEO of Aviation Consulting Experts and a retired United Airlines Captain, feels like Boeing put money ahead of the well-being of passengers and crew.

"Boeing kept that from us purely because they didn't want to bother the airlines with some extra training," he told us. "This was purely a monetary decision on behalf of Boeing and the airlines themselves to keep this away from the pilots and the result was disastrous."

And then there's the traveling public.

poll conducted by Business Insider a week after the Ethiopian crash showed that 53% of American adults would not want to fly on a Boeing 737 Max even after the FAA clears the aircraft for service.

"The 737 Max has stained Boeing's brand reputation," Harteveldt said. "This can't be denied."

Business Insider reached out to Boeing for comment on the matter. A Boeing spokesperson noted that company CEO Dennis Muilenberg made a speech on Thursday touting the need to regain public trust.

"We know every person who steps aboard one of our airplanes places their trust in us," Muilenburg said in the speech. "We’ll do everything possible to earn and re-earn that trust and confidence from our airline customers and the flying public in the weeks and months ahead."

"We take the responsibility to build and deliver airplanes that are safe to fly and can be safely flown by every single one of the professional and dedicated pilots all around the world," the Boeing CEO added.

Boeing might need a replacement for the 737 Max

The Boeing 737 Max is the fastest-selling plane in Boeing history. It's the latest generation of Boeing's money-making 737 family of airliners.

The various versions of the Boeing 737 currently account for 80% of Boeing's 5,800-plane order backlog.

It's going to be an uphill battle for Boeing to restore confidence in the grounded jet.

"You can't hide the 737, you've got thousands of them of all types flying worldwide today for airlines," Harteveldt said.

As a result, you can't simply rebrand the plane.

Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 Max 8 storage"People are going to see right through that," he added.

Therefore, Boeing is going to either have to convince people to fly the 737 Max or come up with a replacement.

"Yes, (737 Max) is the last iteration," Teal Group aviation analyst Richard Aboulafia told Business Insider in March. "They ran out of steam in terms of range and capacity."

That means whichever aircraft Boeing chooses to replace the 737 will be a clean sheet design.

It's not all gloom and doom for Boeing

The situation Boeing finds itself in is not insurmountable.

Aimer said Boeing's engineering team should be able to come up with an effective fix for the 737 Max.

"They can fix this issue, right now they need to be honest and forthright and try to fix this issue to the best of their ability," Aimer said.

Boeing 737 MAX 8 airlinerHarteveldt said Boeing can convince passengers to feel safe in the 737 Max.

"Boeing has to become a bit more of a consumer-facing organization to reinstill confidence in its brand so that the saying 'if it's not Boeing I'm not going' can be said again with pride by travelers," the analyst said.

On the other hand, Mann believes Boeing won't have to do much to get people to return to the 737 Max.

"Once the airplane routinely does what it's designed to do and safely, all of this goes away. And it's crass to say it, but the fact is the traveling public has a very short memory," Mann said.

  • Tesla and Theranos are sometimes discussed in the same terms, as Tesla CEO Elon Musk has jousted with the SEC and former Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes faces criminal charges for accusations of fraud.
  • The Tesla-Theranos comparison, like the Tesla-Enron comparison, makes for fiery debates, but the comparison falls apart on closer scrutiny.
  • At base, Tesla has a product that's relatively easy to understand — cars — while Theranos product was shrouded in secrecy.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

If you have the misfortune to follow or even periodically stumble across the discussion of Tesla impending bankruptcy on Twitter (#TSLAQ) or elsewhere on the internet, you're aware that the company is now often being compared to Theranos, the onetime $9-billion blood-testing startup that's now worth nothing and whose former CEO, Elizabeth Holmes, is currently facing criminal charges.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has poured fuel on the #TSLAQ fire by running afoul of the Securities and Exchange Commission, just as Holmes did (she settled and was barred from serving as an officer of a public company for a decade). Tesla also added Oracle's Larry Ellison to its board — and Ellison was a Theranos investor.

As l'affaire Theranos has broken out of the business press. John Carreyou's Bad Blood, his account of Holmes' and Theranos' rise and fall, is a bestseller, with a film starring Jennifer Lawrence as Holmes in development. An HBO documentary premiered last month. A general climate of skepticism about Silicon Valley's "save the world" ambitions has also emerged in the aftermath of Facebook's scandals.

Read more: The biggest question for Tesla is whether the company can make steady profits on its cars

This has all undermined the reality of Tesla and replaced it with a sort of wildly speculative canvas onto which assorted conspiracies and malfeasances can be painted. At base, Tesla is a relatively small auto company that, remarkably, has come to dominate the mostly abandoned electric-car business (there are more than a billion cars on the road worldwide, and almost none of them run on electricity).

Outlandish enthusiasm on Wall Street for the future of electric cars — coupled with too much money sloshing around in the economy thanks to post-financial crisis government action — has minted a stupid-high stock price for Tesla and intensified the focus on the company. Tesla itself has struggled mightily with its manufacturing fundamentals, becoming an outlier in an industry that easily built over 17 million cars and light trucks in the US alone last year, while Tesla managed 250,000.

Looks bad, right? But is it Theranos bad? Hardly. Here's why:

FOLLOW US: On Facebook for more car and transportation content!

1. Nobody understood Theranos' product.

Theranos' small-sample blood tests were supposed to be executed using a device named "Edison" that accelerated diagnostics, lowered costs, and democratized lab work. But the device never worked, something that the company concealed. Holmes' claims about the technology evidently confused experts for years.

Superficially, Tesla's and Musk's commitment to automated manufacturing could be construed as sort of "Edisonian" — except that everybody in the auto industry understands automation and its limits. They also understand the end product, which is an automobile. It's pretty easy to tell if either the production system is flawed or the product is bad: the cars don't roll off the assembly lines; or the cars don't work.

2. Theranos never went public.

Tesla staged an IPO in 2010 and for nine of its 15 years in business has been compelled by law to expose its financials four times a year.

Theranos was founded in 2003 and had no legal obligation to report its financials until it collapsed in 2018.

An IPO isn't a perfect mechanism to open up a company to scrutiny. But investors have been able to analyze Tesla's balance sheet and financials for almost a decade.

3. Theranos was the only thing Holmes had ever done.

Holmes dropped out of Stanford to start Theranos when she was 19. She had no background in business nor startups.

Musk sold his first company in 1999 and parlayed that success into another company that would eventually become PayPal. He then sank all his money into Tesla and SpaceX.

Consequently, Musk knew that a real product was going to be critical to Tesla's survival.

The Uber IPO exposes how Saudi cash drives Silicon Valley innovation, and even the biggest tech companies can’t stop it      Comment   Translate Page

Saudi Arabia Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman

  • Uber's S-1 filing showed that Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund owns 5% of the company.
  • The Public Investment Fund is also a top investor in Softbank's gargantuan Vision Fund, which owns 16% of Uber — not to mention sizable stakes in companies like Slack, WeWork, and DoorDash.
  • Saudi Arabia has been criticized for human rights abuses and repressive laws, so it's a problematic source of cash for Silicon Valley, which prides itself on changing the world.
  • But Silicon Valley is under attack like never before these days, and that's caused a cynical search for stability that seems to have made taking Saudi money a non-issue.

Silicon Valley's relationship with an undemocratic regime that has a troubling human rights record is in the spotlight.

President Donald Trump has spoken out about it. Lawmakers are debating ways to stop the flow of money and data between the two.

The adversary in this cross-border drama is China, which has raised alarm bells in the US as it bulks up its homegrown tech industry and arouses suspicion of spying and influence.

However, there's much less fuss about the cozy ties between another repressive foreign power and Silicon Valley.

Saudi Arabia's presence in Silicon Valley is greater than it's ever been.

That became especially clear on Thursday when Uber filed its IPO paperwork. We learned from the S-1 filing that the kingdom's Public Investment Fund owns 5.2% of the ride-sharing company.

The figure might actually under-count Saudi Arabia's influence within Uber. Softbank, the Japanese tech conglomerate, owns a 16.3% stake in Uber through its Softbank Vision Fund. The biggest investor in the Vision Fund is Saudi Arabia, which contributed $45 billion of the fund's massive $100 billion bankroll

Mohammed bin Salman and Masayoshi Son SoftBank

The Vision Fund is Silicon Valley's undisputed kingmaker today, writing big checks and amassing stakes in high-flying startups such as WeWork, Slack, DoorDash and GM Cruise. That means Saudi cash is essentially funding much of Silicon Valley's innovation.

As the New York Times pointed out in October, this gusher of Saudi money is an inconvenient truth for an industry that prides itself on making the world a better place.

From space to augmented reality, Saudi cash is everywhere

Some basic facts about Saudi Arabia: It's a place where torture and arbitrary arrests are widespread, according to Amnesty International; a place where women are not allowed to travel abroad without the permission of a male "guardian." It's the leader of a coalition blamed for airstrikes in Yemen responsible for thousands of civilian deaths and injuries.

And then there's the gruesome killing of Saudi dissident journalist Jamal Khashogghi, which, according to the CIA's initial conclusion, was ordered by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, the Wall Street Journal reported.

In other words, Saudi Arabia is antithetical to everything tech companies' altruistic mission statements claim to stand for.

Saudi money may be more prevalent in tech now, but it's not new. Prince Alwaleed bin Talal was an early investor in Twitter, and at one point owned a stake larger than cofounder Jack Dorsey's. (Alwaleed was himself detained — in a Ritz Cartlon hotel — for three months in 2017 by his cousin Prince Mohammed, the current leader of the country).

And the Saudi Public Investment Fund is also a shareholder in Magic Leap, Tesla and Virgin Galactic, according to research firm CB Insights. Whether you're in augmented reality or outer space, there's no escaping Saudi money.

A 2018 Quartz article cites an estimate by research firm Quid that Saudi investors directly participated in tech investment rounds totalling at least $6.2 billion during the previous five years.

dara khosrowshahi fortune uber

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi backed out of a conference organized by Prince Mohammed last year after the Khashogghi killing, as did now-former Google Cloud CEO Diane Greene. But for the most part, there's been little pushback among tech startups when it comes to accepting Saudi or Softbank money.

Uber's winds of change

So why is Silicon Valley okay with Saudi money?

It's true that we live in a world that runs on oil — so drawing a moral line isn't easy when you're pumping gas into your car every day.

Maybe the tech industry thinks it's bringing the winds of change.

After all, when Uber announced its Saudi investment in 2016, women weren't allowed to drive.

“Of course we think women should be allowed to drive,” Uber's Jill Hazelbaker told the New York Times at the time. “In the absence of that, we have been able to provide extraordinary mobility that didn’t exist before — and we’re incredibly proud of that.”

And two years later, change did happen when the ban on women driving was officially lifted.

Did Uber's presence in Saudi Arabia cause the change? It's impossible to say with certainty, but I'd wager not.

Much more likely is that Prince Mohammed, looking for a way to burnish his credentials as a "reformer" when he rose to power in 2017, saw the controversial driving ban as an easy and expedient thing to jettison in exchange for goodwill.

The notion of working from the inside to bring about change has a long and not-so-great track record in tech. Think back to Google contorting itself into a pretzel to justify its introduction, and then withdrawal, of a search engine in China. When outrage recently erupted over Google's secret plans to make a new censored search app for China, the company didn't even try to justify itself with a "change from within" argument.

Tech businesses don't really want a revolution

You may ask, at this point, why more companies don't take a stand and turn down Saudi cash.

The sad reality is that companies are more interested in preserving the status quo that their businesses are built on than in bringing about change; even the "disruptive" tech companies.

That's especially true today, as tech companies are under siege from all sides, blamed for disrupting our privacy, our elections and our children's attention spans.

donald trump orb saudi arabia

Thinking differently is great marketing copy when it sells gadgets. But there's little upside in leading a revolution if it scares away customers.

Look no further than Google's app store. Thanks to an app called Absher, Saudi men can direct where women travel, and receive alerts when women use a passport to leave Saudi Arabia. After Insider's Bill Bostock investigation into this wife-tracking app, US lawmakers demanded that Google remove Absher from its app store.

Google refused to pull the app. It argued that the app does not violate its terms of service.

Right now, the tech industry's terms of service are clear. Whether it's about policies, products or investors, the golden rule is stability.

Nice spin. Customers pays for promised end product. The PROMISE is implicit because the customer paid for it and expects it to be eventually delivered. Elon Musk wouldn’t dare to go on the record and say that Tesla cars may never be fully autonomous because no customer would pay for goals that may or may not be reached.

Comment   Translate Page

You can physically remove the motor, and it may be that you could physically put the motor into a RWD Model 3. But that doesn't mean Tesla would be willing to change the software in either the car to accommodate the change. It would also very likely void the warranty on both cars. I think the most likely outcome would be to wind up with two cars which won't run at all.

"Tesla shorters working hard to spread the false narrative that FSD is many years in the future." True full autonomous driving (Level 4/5 autonomy) is almost certainly at least several years in the future. Tesla -- or more specifically, Elon Musk -- has been making promises far ahead of actual capability about Tesla's self-driving tech for years now. It's great that Elon is so optimistic, as it has sometimes enabled him to accomplish things people kept telling him he couldn't do. As the saying goes: "A man's reach should exceed his grasp." But Elon has been over-promising on Tesla's self-driving tech for years now. No doubt he believes it will happen soon, but the actual evidence indicates otherwise. Elon promised there would be a coast-to-coast demo of hands-free self-driving by a Tesla car a couple of years ago, and that has yet to materialize. That's not a false narrative; that is a reasonable conclusion based on the available evidence. And I'm a very, very long way from being a FÜD-spouting Tesla stock shorter.

Well, he did say "cost", but I don't think it's clear whether he meant that's Tesla's cost, or the cost for the consumer... which would be the <i>price</i>, not the cost.

Agree, I should say companies researching FSD. Personally, I think there is a bubble in the market, but looking at what companies are paying to research and buy companies in the segment, that is not speculative. If Tesla were to sell that segment of their business it would probably be worth as much as the rest of the company.

Right. The <i>price</i> (not cost) of replacement will include the price for labor for replacement, plus costs for shipping the new module, administrative fees (for the ordering process), overhead, plus a profit margin.

For the autonomous fleet is doesn't make that much of a difference wether it is a brand new or a used car. A potential owner will devalue the car because it might have a scratch, a stain on a seat, or a color that they don't like. In an autonomous fleet that is fairly irrelevant. If the cars can make 300 000- 500 000 miles then the used cars are probably being undervalued right now. So by reusing these leased cars Tesla is getting more value for the money then if they would use brand new cars.

You're right, but to support claims that your product will last longer than the competition it would be a good start to give a better warranty than the competition, also lowering repairing costs. Korean brands sell "cheap" cars and offer warranties that are normally above market average.

Yes cars are a lot more, that's why Elon's remark is just silly. Few, very few will be willing to pay over $5k in a car with more than 200 miles/10 years. Most ICE cars can run for another 300k miles with a cost smaller than that - drive train wise - but it's a very rare thing.

I'll believe Tesla has built more cars than the company can sell when I see big full page ads in the paper bragging about how much the local Tesla dealer is discounting the price, lol. People are going to believe whatever they WANT to believe, whatever suits their personal set of prejudices and family/ clan/ tribal/ national loyalties. I have known this since I was a very young man, as the result of reading lots of classic literature. The authors of the great books written a hundred, two hundred years, a thousand years ago, understood this as clearly as the sight of the sun on a clear day at high noon. The social science establishment is finally getting around to actually accepting it, although the research proving it has been around for half a century or longer now. https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2017/02/27/why-facts-dont-change-our-minds?utm_source=pocket-newtab "Stripped of a lot of what might be called cognitive-science-ese, Mercier and Sperber’s argument runs, more or less, as follows: Humans’ biggest advantage over other species is our ability to coöperate. Coöperation is difficult to establish and almost as difficult to sustain. For any individual, freeloading is always the best course of action. Reason developed not to enable us to solve abstract, logical problems or even to help us draw conclusions from unfamiliar data; rather, it developed to resolve the problems posed by living in collaborative groups. “Reason is an adaptation to the hypersocial niche humans have evolved for themselves,” Mercier and Sperber write. Habits of mind that seem weird or goofy or just plain dumb from an “intellectualist” point of view prove shrewd when seen from a social “interactionist” perspective. Pogo got it right, we have met the enemy, and they is us. Twain got it right. Ain't we got all the fools in town on our side, and ain't that a big enough majority in any town? "If reason is designed to generate sound judgments, then it’s hard to conceive of a more serious design flaw than confirmation bias. Imagine, Mercier and Sperber suggest, a mouse that thinks the way we do. Such a mouse, “bent on confirming its belief that there are no cats around,” would soon be dinner. To the extent that confirmation bias leads people to dismiss evidence of new or underappreciated threats—the human equivalent of the cat around the corner—it’s a trait that should have been selected against. The fact that both we and it survive, Mercier and Sperber argue, proves that it must have some adaptive function, and that function, they maintain, is related to our “hypersociability.” Mercier and Sperber prefer the term “myside bias.” Humans, they point out, aren’t randomly credulous. Presented with someone else’s argument, we’re quite adept at spotting the weaknesses. Almost invariably, the positions we’re blind about are our own." It's all about us and them, our friends , our families, our tribes, our religion, our culture, our nation, versus THEM, THEIR friends, THEIR families, THEIR tribes, THEIR religion, THEIR culture, THEIR nation. This is why you can't reason with a Christian about matters touching on his religion, why you can't convince a Trump follower that Trump is a grossly incompetent scumbag, why people who believe a woman who wants an abortion should have one are not only unable but actually UNWILLING to understand that many tens of millions of people actually do believe that abortion is murder. I don't even pretend to know the solutions to our current cultural problems, other than that time will solve most of them, one way or another, in ways that put some of us in cultural heaven and some of us in cultural hell. Better education is an enormous help, but anybody who thinks education can change things swiftly, in human time frames, still doesn't quite get it. It takes two or three generations for education to really do its work, to ACCOMPLISH the job, because the oldest generation will never abandon its beliefs, and the middle generation will only modify its own beliefs to the extent it's forced to do so by bricks upside its collective head. The younger generation must become the middle/ older generation in order to finally effect change at the grand scale.

<b>The crowd-sourced, social media swarm that is betting Tesla will crash and burn</b> By Russ Mitchell https://www.latimes.com/business/autos/la-fi-hy-tesla-short-sellers-musk-20190408-story.html It’s a sunny day in March and “Machine Planet” is flying a single-engine Cessna over Northern California. He’s cruising at 1,500 feet toward a massive lot leased by electric-car maker Tesla. His mission: to burst the Tesla bubble. And make some money doing it. What he sees today makes his eyes widen: more than 100 car-carrier trailers, the kind you see on highways hauling new cars to dealers. They’re lined up in neat rows. Empty. Idle. “Ten days left in the quarter, and they’re just sitting there,” said Machine Planet, peering down at the remote landscape outside Lathrop. Tesla bought those trailers to aid what Chief Executive Elon Musk said will be an unprecedented wave of new car deliveries in March. But to Machine Planet — that’s the name he uses on Twitter — the scene just confirms his suspicions that there are lots all around the U.S. filled with unsold Tesla cars. (He and others claim to have counted 52.) If you spend any time on the Twitter hashtag $TslaQ, you know what this means to Tesla short sellers. They believe the lots full of new Model 3s — and Models S and X vehicles, too — show Tesla has reached a cliff in demand for its vehicles. When the rest of the world finally admits the company’s days as a fast-growth story are numbered, they say, its stock price will crash, creating a bonanza for investors who, like Machine Planet, have bet big that Tesla’s shares are grossly overvalued. In April 2018, laid up after surgery, he listened to a lively conversation about the short case on the irreverent financial markets podcast Quoth the Raven. “I found there was this whole community of people studying this company. I got sucked in completely over the next two months.” He started shorting. He had nothing against Musk at the time. “It was purely financial. My opinion of Musk was very neutral,” he said. “The double landing of SpaceX rockets? I was impressed as anybody else.” But he noticed car-buyer demand was a big topic on $TslaQ. Contributors posted Google satellite shots of lots in remote locations, far from the company’s Fremont factory, where cars were being stored. One spot was in Lathrop, not far from Stockton, in an unirrigated section of the Central Valley known as the “dust bowl.” A couple of $TslaQ contributors had spotted an ad for Tesla jobs there. They found what seemed like hundreds or thousands of Model 3s being trucked into a lot through a gate and behind fences. But they couldn’t get a good look inside. “So I flew to Lathrop,” Machine Planet said. “There was this amazing moment when I realized the entire facility was packed with cars.” More than 3,000, he said. “That was entirely the moment where we went from kind of believing Elon about demand and not being able to build enough cars to [finding evidence that] the cars are either not sold or not salable.”

Not sure today that AP is worth that much. Mobileye pricing - maybe. FSD in an inexpensive package is worth $1T - if not more. In 2010, the estimated US cost of car accidents was $871 billion. Worldwide and inflation - $3T is probably close. These values don't factor in lost productive time when commuting.

I think most of us would be perfectly happy with an average human driver that does not drink alcohol, use a cell phone or get sleepy. Wouldn't be an average human but would be an average driver. The average driver who doesn't do one of those 3 things would reduce the accident rate well over 50% which would save 16,000 lives per year in the US alone. Speed is of the essence - not some perfect tech that will cost $100k per car and we won't need street lights or head lights.

While CR may be the best out there let's not forget their car of the year award to Tesla that had to be rescinded within months. They too are susceptible to "What I wish to be true will become so." Another option--just look at two or three year old Toyota or Honda products (Lexus and Acura included depending on your desired trim level) and go from there. 99.99% of the time you will not go wrong.

          electric cars      Comment   Translate Page
Depends. Some companies that this really seriously, some don't. Traditionally - if you put no effort into it - a small combustion car is going to do very well on embodied carbon. There is generally 6-10 tons of CO2 embodied in a car with some very good examples getting down to 4 or so. It generally takes more energy to make a battery than an engine at present so unless manufacturers take efforts to abate it then there's a gap, even if the drive cycle emissions and grid equivalents are considerably lower. This said some manufacturers take it really seriously. BMW was able to take the CO2 embodied in manufacture of the i3 to an extremely low level - some cars are net zero out of the factory gate. Carbon frames make extremely intelligently and at moderate cost, they replaced welding with bonding, bending with forming, all very low energy-intensive processes. They also invested in renewable sources at relevant manufacturing facilities. Germans, got to love the rigour. At end of life batteries are surprisingly recycleable with high levels of material recovery. Depends where you live, and all data you need for this in Australia is public off AEMO's website. Depending what you drive and how long a car will live, in most passenger car cases you're better off buying an electric car from a drive-cycle CO2 perspective. In SA and TAS it's a no-brainer - good carbon performance with the grid there. Never really had the 'problem'. Plug in when I get home, drive out in the morning with it fully charged. You do forget what it's like to go to a petrol station after a while. Anywhere you've got a power point or grid supply. If you're talking public and DC-fast, I'd not get too wrapped up about it when well under 1% of new cars sold currently need to be plugged in anywhere. A lot is getting built. There's no mandate to buy them either, suffice to say there's no one in Australia that bought an EV that doesn't have a place to charge it. A lot of new unit blocks actually require vehicle charging - have a number of customers here. Most plan for a combination of DC and AC. Street vehicles can charge on street or at destination... this has been done overseas, and plenty of people get by just fine (though I'd not recommend it in Australia yet). You bring up a good point, so let's run the numbers. The actual grid CO2 data is here https://www.aemo.com.au/Electricity/National-Electricity-Market-NEM/Settlements-and-payments/Settlements/Carbon-Dioxide-Equivalent-Intensity-Index. This gives the following year-to-date CO2 equivalent per kWh energy produced on grid: A reasonable mid-size electric car will average some 140 Wh/km, so this means in each state they're 'polluting' the following per km: Now, it's important to note that the grid gets greener every year at an increasing rate. I'm going to say it improves at 2% compound (it does better), that a car will last for 10 years (typically around 18 on ABS data) and that a petrol car doesn't change efficiency over time (typically it gets worse). So it's an extremely fair comparison (for the non-EV!) The revised 10-year average looks like this: At this point we can work out what a car would need to consume less than to be more efficient than the EV. The data we need is also public from various government sources (https://www.ntc.gov.au/Media/Reports/(6B1DD6CF-FB2C-B934-74A8-47971CB09050).pdf is one). So depending where you get your energy from (which state), your car needs to get (not be rated at - actually get) less than the following to beat a good mid-size EV: They're some pretty low numbers - and they'll only get lower - though there are some cars that can be reliably competitive. Would stress that most of the petrol cars at the business end of this are hybrids anyway, and the carbon it'll take to make and recycle their energy systems in addition to an ICE make their build and destruction CO2 impacts similar. Not trying to belt your or anyone else over the head with numbers; it's not all green either. Model S owners are routinely double these consumption numbers (as in 'if you were in Victoria and charging off the grid only, your Tesla Model S has a worse drive cycle carbon impact than a car doing 10.8L/100km'), Model 3 owners (a generation later) are routinely around 150-160Wh. i3 owners are consistently under this, so are a few others. To be equally fair, most EV owners down here are invested in solar PV and offsetting their mileage-associated carbon pretty significantly, and you can't exactly make your own carbon-free petrol at home as easily. In short, there's enough data with which to make informed choices if interested. Some favour EVs, some not yet. They're typically engineered for a 20-year life though we're finding that in most cases, when implemented with a good thermal system, that they're beating expected usage quite significantly. One of the more flexible things about EV design is being able to use software very accurately to monitor and restrict how the power system is used to actually make it last longer. Mileage is typically to life of car in these conditions. Cost is a tough one, mostly because it's always falling. It's not frightening cab drivers however - a good segment for EV takeup - yes the pack is more expensive, though there's practically nothing else to go wrong or service. Air filters, periodic coolant flush and transmission oil change (far less often), and that's it. Don't just focus on the battery, maintenance is a whole-of-car thing. Try one, you might change your mind. They work for a lot of people over here in the real world. Not yet for everyone all the time.

Millennials are the demographic most open to self-driving cars, but not by much      Comment   Translate Page
Ford chief executive Jim Hackett made news a few days ago when he seemed to pour a bit of cold water on the carmaker's autonomous vehicle ambitions, telling the Detroit Economic Club that "we overestimated the arrival" of self-driving cars. Hackett, who was once in charge of the autonomous vehicle unit at Ford, said such cars are still forthcoming from the company in a couple of years as planned, but their applications will be narrow. Making it a reflection of Ford, as other carmakers not named Tesla are currently doing, sort of dipping their toe into the self-driving waters -- as opposed to diving in head-first. A new study from HarrisX sheds some possible light on why that's the case, with a full third of the Americans polled saying they believe self-driving cars are a bad idea. We've reported on data and studies before that reach this same conclusion, such as the American Automobile Association report we told you about just last month showing that most of the general public (71% of respondents) admitted they're definitely afraid to ride in a self-driving car. Here, meanwhile, are some of the key findings from HarrisX's new study: A quarter of respondents admitted they are "very afraid" about the idea of a self-driving car. Just 7% described themselves as "very familiar" with self-driving cars, while almost 60% confessed to having little familiarity at all. Kara Swisher wrote in a New York Times opinion piece last month that "owning a car will soon be as quaint as owning a horse," thanks to the rise of ride-sharing options like Uber and Lyft. However, this new HarrisX analysis shows that, while people generally remain fearful of self-driving cars, Americans of all ages still see car ownership as important, giving them a sense of freedom to go where they want, when they want, as well as owning a car as a rite of passage. Almost 90% of respondents said their concerns about self-driving cars are focused on possible "technology glitches." Also, another 70% believe that self-driving car tech is developing at a faster-than-expected pace. If there's a silver lining in all this, it's arguably that almost 50% of millennials believe self-driving cars are a good idea. Among that group, though, half say they wouldn't feel comfortable in such a car that's driving faster than 65 miles per hour. The larger point about millennials, though, is arguably the most critical finding of the study. It's a demographic that, certainly, will be around longer than older car buyers, giving self-driving car manufacturers the chance to sell maybe as many as two or even three cars to this group over their lifetime. Of course, it's worth pointing out that a majority of millennials still aren't board with this idea, so it will be incumbent on carmakers to do more to win over this demographic as time goes on.

VW confirms plans for Tesla-fighting electric SUV       Comment   Translate Page

SHANGHAI – Volkswagen confirmed plans to launch a flagship full-electric SUV based the ID Roomzz concept unveiled here on Sunday.

The production version will be a three-row, seven-seat model that will compete against large electric SUVs such as the Tesla Model X.

The SUV will "launch initially" in China starting in 2021, VW said in a statement released ahead of the public debut of the ID Roomzz at the Shanghai auto show this week.

VW CEO Herbert Diess said the production ID Roomz will be the flagship electric car to be launched by Volkswagen in China.

"We plan to produce more than 22 million electric cars in the next 10 years," Diess said, adding that around half of VW’s engineers were working on products destined for China.

Diess said the SUV would eventually be rolled out to other markets but did not comment on the timing. The model is expected to be sold in the U.S. and Europe.

The ID Roomzz is 4920 mm (194 inches) long, which is 42 mm (1.7 inches) longer than VW’s Touareg midsize SUV. It has four seats but the production version will have up to seven seats.

The concept's seating is flexible, turning it into "a lounge on wheels for a life on the road," VW said.

The SUV is designed to offer Level 4 autonomous driving, which means it can drive itself in most situations.

To start the self-driving mode, the driver presses on a VW logo on the steering wheel for at least five seconds. This moves the steering wheel to an off position to provide more space in the cockpit area.

Each seat can be rotated inward 25 degrees to enable more communication between driver and passengers. Seats can also be reclined when car is in autonomous mode. Pressing on the steering wheel logo will allow the driver to take back control.

The concept has a digital glass-front panel with a dashboard and steering wheel that appears to float in front of the driver as a visual display. Interactive light zones provide passengers with information via intuitively perceptible lighting effects.

Boy oh boy are there some serious flaws in the autopilot system itself! I was driving a 16 model s d90 in Minneapolis on 94W, the road was clear but it was winter and the car would have hit the snow bank when it should have just followed the lines on the road. That being said, it is nice when it works right. Paying for new stuff that isn't installed is like paying for new tires that you are going to need some day. My friend purchased a model3 this last winter and I felt she over paid because the options she got put it in the price range of a model S, not the anticipated $35.000 mark. Ok, Minnesota gets cold, when it was -14F, she started out with a 250 mile range and couldn't get home just going 20 miles, she was almost out of range. Then in her garage, the car would not start to put a charge back in for about 5 hours, so it finally charged but slowly because of the cold. Her electric bill has increased to $450 more per month just to charge at home. This is one of the most expensive luxury cars that isn't really a luxury car in feel. There are many nice Bentley cars for around $40,000 used. Drive a Bentley and then drive a model 3; the Bentley is impressive but has no self driving at that price.

1. Videokártya  ("mezei"/irodai, gamer, speciális/quadro), valamint annak tápegység igénye

Pl kb  500 W tápegység 1 db 6 pines tápcsati

     kb  600 W tápegység 2 db 6 pines tápcsati

    kb 1000 W tápegység 2 db 8 pines tápcsati

segít a megfelelő típusú ház kiválasztásánál

2. Alaplap (a chipset fejlettsége), pl C600 vagy C602

3. Processzor, pl v1 vagy v2 család

4. Memória, ez a legkönnyebben bővíthető rész

Fontos, hogy ezek legyenek összhangban. Hasznos segédeszköz lehet a cpu ( ITT ) és videocard  ( ITT ) benchmark táblázat a teljesítmények összehasonlításához.
A különböző processzorok teljesítményének összehasonlítása megtekinthető a cpu benchmark táblázataiban.

                    Bővítés megoldható akár E5-2690-as processzorral is (azaz i7-7700 + 30% erősségű szint), többféle változat található termékeim között (pl E5-2620, 2660, 2665, 2670, 2680, 2690)

ITT

Ezáltal a 2011-es gépekhez a "K"-s kártyákat ajánlom.
LAN: Gigabit Ethernet controller (100 / 1000 Mb)

Tesla isn't the next Theranos — here are 10 reasons why (TSLA)      Comment   Translate Page

Elizabeth Holmes

Whether it's about policies, products or investors, the golden rule is stability.

dclonghorn, My Tesla was more than that, and I got a $7500 rebate so my cost before sales tax was about 52,500. It has AWD, long range battery, and enhanced autopilot. Tesla recently eliminated the lowest cost Model 3, so in the US it is $36,950 until June 30, 2019, this "Standard plus" has autopilot (used to be a $3000 option) and a longer range battery than the "Standard version" (240 miles vs 220 miles). This was a recent change, supposedly one can call Tesla or visit a store to order the lower cost model. Not really a big difference between the lower cost model and mine aside from difference in range and options. https://www.tesla.com/model3/design#battery

In reply to A brilliant marketing gimmick, maybe

If Waymo thought the best course was to make a car that drives everywhere, they would be doing that. They have judged that what Tesla is trying -- no LIDAR, limited maps -- is too difficult. And that's even though their goal is to do very difficult things, ie. so difficult as to take much longer than their approach will take.

I am not sure there will be a sudden "foom" in ability like AlphaGo. (Which, as of course you know, was done by Alphabet, so it's not like the Waymo people are unaware of this.)

The robocar problem is one of asymptotic approach to perfection. Any team today can, fairly quickly, get a 99.9% car. This is what Tesla has done, though it's got some advantages over the other teams trying that. But while it looks like an asymptote when viewed as a percentage of perfection, in fact it's a long crawl up when looked at as miles between mistakes. 1000 miles between mistakes looks very impressive, but it's a tiny fraction of the way to human levels of safety.

Not sure how the autopilot is a stress reliever. What does it do when some knob is riding your butt in the carpool lane? That happens to us all the time and it doesn't matter how fast you go.

Comment   Translate Page

Model 3 drive unit & body is designed like a commercial truck for a million mile life. Current battery modules should last 300k to 500k miles (1500 cycles). Replacing modules (not pack) will only cost $5k to $7k.

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) 13
