Gusting Southwest Kansas Winds Knock Down Fences, Set Dogs Loose, Pack Animal Shelters      Comment   Translate Page
Wind scrapes across the plains of southwest Kansas like few places in the country. It drives a booming new industry of turbines that feeds electricity across the region. But at times, the wind gets out of hand. This week, it plowed across the landscape, causing trucks to swerve on highways, kicking up dust clouds and freeing family pets by knocking down fences. With gusts hitting 55 mph, the National Weather Service issued several warnings for the region this week. Ray Burgert, a meteorologist for the agency, told people traveling in SUVs and campers to take special care. Such winds can take out semi-trailer trucks . The winds also triggered an elevated wildfire risk across the high plains. “We discourage that outdoor burning, especially with these winds,” Burgert said. “It’s easy for fires to escape control and containment can be difficult.” High winds also strained southwest Kansas animal shelters. Dogs often escape during strong storms that topple fences. Finney County Humane

Invisible Theatre concludes its 48th Anniversary Season with the Southwest Premiere of 20TH CENTURY BLUES by Susan Miller. This sharply funny and evocative new play features an all-star cast: Molly McKasson, Susan Baker, ToReeNee Wolf, Geri Hooper Wharam, P.J. Peavy, and Cole Potwardowski and is directed by Susan Claassen with Fred Rodriguez. A reunion. An Argument. A Ted Talk. Emotional mutiny. And a bond that connects four women who meet once a year for a photo shoot, chronicling their changing (and aging) selves as they navigate through love, careers, children, and major world events. But, when these private photographs have the potential to go public in a retrospective at MoMA, their relationships are tested, forcing the women to confront who they are, what they've become, and how they'll deal with whatever lies ahead.

"20TH CENTURY BLUES...breaks the mold when it comes to the female ensemble dramedy...With poignant but still laugh-out-loud social commentary on the process of aging in America, razor sharp one-liners and thought-provoking questions about older generations adjusting to the younger world, 20TH CENTURY BLUES takes a tried and true comedic premise and adds a uniquely modern twist."

Comment on Opinion: Thoughts on living in an RV in Berkeley by NO Homesteader-RV camper Vans       Comment   Translate Page
Can we get over this affordable housing issue? Erica please stop your false rhetoric. Here are some websites for affordable housing NOT in the Bay Area. I think EastBayKidd has some good points about able bodied individuals getting off their Arses and making a real go of it....actually working for a living. Have you ever been out of California? Have you explored the Midwest, Southwest or South and understand that if you are hard on your luck living in the most expensive area in the USA is ludicrous. I am still waiting for you to offer up your home, driveway and lawn for RVs and campers. Put your policy whining and advocacy to the test. <b>Suburb of Michigan starting at $600 per month, includes pool and gym.</b> https://www.apartments.com/canton-garden-apartments-canton-mi/518nh8m/ <b>broader suburban Detroit Apartments at affordable rates $600 per month and upwards:</b> https://www.apartments.com/westland-mi/2/ <b>Phoenix, AZ starting at $633 per month</b> https://www.apartments.com/del-mar-terrace-phoenix-az/ky2fxj9/ <b>Hilliary Clinton Territory--Lilttle Rock, AR starting at $539 per month with pool etc. etc.</b> https://www.apartments.com/briarwood-little-rock-ar/1nnjbb4/ Obviously, there are always exceptions but let's be realistic we have or are creating a third world environment and the two things that have yet to occur are a major disease outbreak and major wild fire scenarios. The snowball effect of leniency on vagrant, non-working newcomers has now gotten to more than a boiling point. As compassionate as Berkeley wants to be it is now beyond the ability of this city to help everybody who comes here and to also deal with important city infrastructure issues that our tax dollars are supposed to go to. It's time to think long and hard about your council members and if there are really the ones we want managing our hard earned tax dollars we send to deal with false problem solving rhetoric.

"This list is based on a number of factors that we felt would select candidates to fight for a real Brexit after the European elections. Ukip's priority is to have MEPs who will fight to make Brexit happen."

MD 0329 CONCERNING SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE FOR SOUTHEAST MISSISSIPPI AND FAR SOUTHWEST ALABAMA
MD 0329 Image

Mesoscale Discussion 0329
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0825 PM CDT Sat Apr 13 2019

Areas affected...Southeast Mississippi and far southwest Alabama

Concerning...Severe potential...Watch possible

Valid 140125Z - 140300Z

Probability of Watch Issuance...60 percent

SUMMARY...Line embedded supercells currently in south central
Mississippi are expected to move east with a threat of damaging
winds and tornadoes.

DISCUSSION...In the last hour, storms on the southern periphery of
the confluence band in central Mississippi have started to
strengthen. The strongest of these storms is currently entering
Walthall county. The 00Z LIX sounding shows moderate instability
with effective shear around 60 knots and 0-1 km SRH in excess of 450
m2/s2. This environment will support all severe hazards including
the potential for tornadoes. Widespread convective development in
this confluence band will likely lead to storm interference similar
to the storms farther north, but there is the potential that storms
could remain more discrete in this area which would support the
tornado threat despite a slightly weaker wind field compared to
areas farther north.

If several sustained storms can materialize across southern
Mississippi, an additional tornado watch may need to be issued in
far southeast Mississippi and far southwest Alabama.

Collectively called "hoodoos," these unique formations are whimsically arranged and tinted with colors too numerous and subtle to name. The Paiutes who lived in the region when Euro-Americans arrived in southern Utah believed that the "hoodoos" were "Legend People" who were turned to stone by Coyote.
It was the Paiutes, living throughout the area, which greeted explorers Captain Clarence E. Dutton and John Wesley Powell in the 1870's. Many of today's place names come from this time. For example, Dutton's report gave the name Pink Cliffs to the Claron Formation. Other names - Paunsaugunt, place or home of the beavers; Paria, muddy water of elk; Panguitch, water or fish; and Yovimpa, point of pines - were derived from the Paiute language. Congress created Bryce National Monument in 1923. In 1928, Bryce Canyon was designated Bryce Canyon National Park. Numerous clips were compiled to bring you this video. They include:

La. churches rebuilding after fires      Comment   Translate Page

Benjamin Watson may have retired from the New Orleans Saints, but these days, he's repping his community in other ways.

The former NFL tight end spread the word about fundraising efforts for the three historically black churches that burned down in Louisiana's St. Landry Parish in recent weeks.

St. Mary Baptist Church in Porte Barre was set on fire March 26, followed by the Greater Union Baptist Church in Opelousas on April 2 and Mount Pleasant Baptist Church on April 4.

Authorities arrested 21-year-old Holden Matthews in connection with the fires.

Watson sent out a tweet with an address and GoFundMe page where people interested in helping the churches rebuild can send donations.

"It is imperative that we show this community and the entire country that these types of acts do not represent who we are. And most importantly as the body of Christ, we suffer along side our brothers and sisters whenever tragedy, persecution or loss happens," Watson wrote on Twitter.

According to the page, the GoFundMe campaign is an initiative of the Seventh District Baptist Association, a group of about 60 Baptist churches in Southwest Louisiana, including the three churches affected by the fires.

"All of your generous donations will be disbursed equally among all three churches for not only rebuilding their sanctuaries, but for the purchase of all necessities lost in the fires, including pews, sound system, musical instruments, etc.," the GoFundMe page reads.

The campaign had raised more than $25,000 as of Saturday evening.

Church leaders were optimistic about rebuilding and were ready to help their communities start healing.

"It started off a dark moment in our lives, but with the rebuilding process you're going to see some things ... that are going to be very bright for our churches," Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Pastor Gerald Toussaint said.

In the meantime, congregants have been attending services in churches nearby.

"Now, my concern is when do we get back to normal," Harry Richard, pastor of Greater Union Baptist Church, told CNN affiliate KLFY. "When do we put our church family back in their home?"

CNN's Christina Maxouris, Samira Said and Josh Campbell contributed to this report.

Use of Force against Demonstrations in Protest against the U.S. President’s Decision to Recognize Jerusalem as the Capital of Israel:
Israeli forces continued its excessive use of lethal force against peaceful demonstration organized by Palestinian civilians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and it was named as “The Great March of Return and Breaking Siege.” The demonstration was in protest against the U.S. President Donald Trump’s declaration to move the U.S. Embassy to it. According to PCHR fieldworkers’ observations, the border area witnessed large participation by Palestinian civilians as the Israeli forces continued to use upon highest military and political echelons excessive force against the peaceful demonstrators, though the demonstration were fully peaceful. The demonstration was as follows during the reporting period:

Gaza Strip:

During the 53rd week of the March of Return and Breaking Siege activities, Israeli forces wounded 115, including 28 children, five women and three journalists. The wounds of two of them were classified as serious. The incidents were as follows:
  • Northern Gaza Strip: The Israeli shooting at Palestinian demonstrators, which continued from 16:00 until 19:00, resulted in the injury of 22 Palestinian civilians. Nine of them were hit with live bullets and shrapnel, one with a rubber bullet and 12 were directly hit with tear gas canisters.
  • Gaza City: the Israeli shooting at Palestinian demonstrators, which continued from 15:00 until 18:30, resulted in the injury of 45 Palestinian civilians, including ten children and two women. Thirty-nine of them were hit with live bullets and shrapnel, two were hit with rubber bullets and four were directly hit with tear gas canister.
  • Central Gaza Strip: The Israeli shooting at Palestinian demonstrators, which continued from 14:30 until 18:30, resulted in the injury of 25 Palestinian civilians, including 12 children, two women and a female journalist. Four of them were hit with live bullets and shrapnel and 21 were directly hit with tear gas canisters and rubber bullets. The wounded journalist was identified as Safinaz Baker Mahmoud al-Loh (30), a journalist from Nuseirat working for Amad News Agency, and was hit with a tear gas canister to the right leg.

The injured journalists were identified as Seif Iyad Sh’aban Abul Ghafour (18), a journalist for ‘Ein News Network, who was hit with a tear gas canister to the right arm, and Mohammad ‘Eissa Mohammad Abu Sa’da (26), a photojournalist at Nour News Network, who was hit with a tear gas canister to the left leg.
  • Rafah: The Israeli shooting at the demonstrators, which continued from 16:00 until 18:30, resulted in the injury of 15 demonstrators, including four children. Four of them were hit with live bullets and shrapnel, three with rubber bullets and eight were directly hit with tear gas canisters. The injuries of two of them were classified as serious.

West Bank:
  • At approximately 13:00, on Friday, 05 April 2019, on Friday afternoon, Palestinian peaceful demonstrators started from the center of Kufor Qadoum village, northeast of Qalqiliyah, the eastern entrance to the village, which has been closed for 15 years in favor of “Kedumim” settlement established on the village’s lands. The demonstrators chanted national slogans demanding end of occupation and condemning the Israeli forces’ crimes against Palestinian protestors along the eastern border of the Gaza Strip within “The Great March of Return and Breaking the Siege” activities. The demonstrators threw stones at Israeli forces stationed behind sand berms. The Israeli forces immediately fired rubber bullets, sound bombs and tear gas canisters at them. • At approximately 16:00, on Saturday, 06 April 2019, Palestinian young men gathered along the annexation wall, west of Qalqiliyah, and threw stones at Israeli forces stationed in the area. The Israeli forces immediately fired sound bombs, tear gas canisters and rubber bullets at them. Moreover, the Israeli forces pursued them and arrested Loay Ibraheem Salman Abu Shehab (17).
  1. Continued closure of the oPt
Israel continued to impose a tight closure on the oPt, imposing severe restrictions on the movement of Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including occupied East Jerusalem.

Gaza Strip
Israeli forces continuously tighten the closure of the Gaza Strip and close all commercial crossings, making the Karm Abu Salem crossing the sole commercial crossing of the Gaza Strip, although it is not suitable for commercial purposes in terms of its operational capacity and distance from markets.
Israeli forces have continued to apply the policy, which is aimed to tighten the closure on all commercial crossings, by imposing total control over the flow of imports and exports.

Israeli forces have continued to impose a total ban on the delivery of raw materials to the Gaza Strip, except for very limited items and quantities. The limited quantities of raw materials allowed into Gaza do not meet the minimal needs of the civilian population of the Gaza Strip.

Israeli forces also continued to impose an almost total ban on the Gaza Strip exports, including agricultural and industrial products, except for light-weighted products such as flowers, strawberries, and spices. However, they lately allowed the exportation of some vegetables such as cucumber and tomatoes, furniture and fish.

Israel has continued to close the Beit Hanoun (Erez) crossing for the majority of Palestinian citizens from the Gaza Strip. Israel only allows the movement of a limited number of groups, with many hours of waiting in the majority of cases. Israel has continued to adopt a policy aimed at reducing the number of Palestinian patients allowed to move via the Beit Hanoun crossing to receive medical treatment in hospitals in Israel or in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Israel also continued applying the policy of making certain civilian traveling via the crossing interviewed by the Israeli intelligence service to be questioned, blackmailed or arrested.

Beit Hanoun (“Erez”) crossing, in the north of the Gaza Strip, is designated for the movement of individuals, and links the Gaza Strip with the West Bank.

The Latest: Mississippi university escapes storm damage      Comment   Translate Page

DALLAS (AP) — The Latest on a powerful storm system moving through the southern United States (all times local):

11:12 p.m.

Officials say there's some debris from a possible tornado but no injuries or building damage at Mississippi State University.

The 21,000-student university ordered students into basements late Saturday night as a tornado approached the campus in Starkville.

Residents report trees down and at least some minor structural damage to residential areas nearby, including some areas where students live off campus.

Mississippi State spokesman Sid Salter says university officials are still looking for damage, especially in outlying areas of campus. The debris on the campus may have been dropped by a tornado that had been confirmed on the ground southwest of the campus.

Heavy rains were also producing flash flooding in the area.

Starkville was full of visitors Saturday because Mississippi State held its spring football game and a baseball game.

6:15 p.m.

Authorities say a possible tornado has touched down in western Mississippi, causing damage to several businesses and vehicles.

John Moore, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Jackson, says a twister was reported Saturday in the Vicksburg area of Mississippi and was indicated on radar. No injuries were reported.

News footage from the area showed shattered windows and rooftop debris from businesses, flooding in parking lots and cars with windows smashed out.

Moore tells The Associated Press by phone that meteorologists haven't yet confirmed it was a tornado. Severe storms crossing a big swath of the South, including parts of Louisiana and Mississippi, have knocked out power to thousands and caused some flash flooding. Damage also has been...

Pace of Bering Sea changes startles scientists      Comment   Translate Page
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Yupik Eskimo village of Kotlik on Alaska’s northwest coast relies on a cold, hard blanket of sea ice to protect homes from vicious winter Bering Sea storms.

Frigid north winds blow down from the Arctic Ocean, freeze saltwater and push sea ice south. The ice normally prevents waves from forming and locks on to beaches, walling off villages. But not this year.

In February, southwest winds brought warm air and turned thin sea ice into “snow cone ice” that melted or blew off. When a storm pounded Norton Sound, water on Feb. 12 surged up the Yukon River and into Kotlik, flooding low-lying homes. Lifelong resident Philomena Keyes, 37, awoke to knee-deep water outside her house.

“This is the first I experienced in my life, a flood that happened in the winter, in February,” Keyes said in a phone interview.

Winter storm surge flooding is the latest indication that something’s off-kilter around the Bering Strait, the gateway from the Pacific Ocean to the Arctic Ocean. Rapid, profound changes tied to high atmospheric temperatures, a direct result of climate change, may be reordering the region’s physical makeup. Ocean researchers are asking themselves if they’re witnessing the transformation of an ecosystem.

The Bering Sea last winter saw record-low sea ice. Climate models predicted less ice, but not this soon, said Seth Danielson, a physical oceanographer at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

“The projections were saying we would’ve hit situations similar to what we saw last year, but not for another 40 or 50 years,” Danielson said.

Walruses and seals use sea ice to rest and give birth. Villagers use sea ice to hunt them. Sea ice is the primary habitat of polar bears. Algae that clings to the bottom of sea ice blooms in spring, dies and sinks, sending an infusion of food to clams, snails and sea worms on the ocean floor – the prey of gray whales, walruses and bearded seals.

Sea ice also affects commercially valuable fish. Sea ice historically has created a Bering Sea “cold pool,” an east-west barrier of extremely cold, salty water at the bottom of the wide, shallow continental shelf. The wall of cold water historically has concentrated Pacific cod and walleye pollock in the southeastern Bering Sea.

“It tends to extend from the Russian side to the northwest,” said Lyle Britt, a fisheries biologist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. “It kind of comes down almost like a little hockey stick shape ... through the center of the southeast Bering Sea.”

However, when Britt and other NOAA researchers last year conducted annual fish and ocean condition surveys, they got a big surprise: For the first time in 37 years, they found no cold pool.

Researchers found high concentrations of Pacific cod and walleye pollock in the northern Bering Sea. But the species that was supposed to be there, Arctic cod, was hardly found.

More than half the fish landed in U.S. waters come from the North Pacific, and most are caught in the Bering Sea. Chad See, executive director of the Freezer Longline Coalition, a trade association of vessels that target Pacific cod using baited lines, said members caught their quota last year but had to travel farther north.

“Does that mean that the stock is declining, is suffering because of the warming temperatures? Or is it that they’ve moved north and it’s still a vibrant fishery?” See said.

It’s too soon to conclude that atmosphere and ocean changes are due simply to climate change, said NOAA physical oceanographer Phyllis Stabeno, who has studied the Bering Sea for more than 30 years. The southern Bering Sea since 2000 has undergone multi-year stanzas of low and extensive ice, she said.

When sea ice in November began forming as usual, she expected a bounce-back this winter. Instead, warm winds in February mostly cleared the northern Bering Sea of sea ice through the Bering Strait into the Chukchi Sea.

“We’re in winter,” she said. “This is all supposed to be frozen.”

Formation of the cold pool is again in doubt. It could return in the future, but temperatures are trending upward with the rate of greenhouse gases entering the atmosphere.

Scientists say figuring out the ocean physics is far less of a challenge than projecting the biological ramifications.

“We sort of opened up this whole Pandora’s box of not really knowing how the ecosystem as a whole is going to adjust to that,” Danielson said.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Park Service early last summer detected trouble. Resident called with reports of emaciated and dead seabirds.

Common murres, which can use up fat reserves and starve after three days without eating, fly hundreds miles to find fish schools or krill but were washing up dead on shore. Forktail storm petrels, fulmars, shearwaters, kittiwakes, auklets and puffins also died.

No one can say why. Seabird experts wonder whether the presence of more pollock and Pacific cod, which have voracious appetites and are far more efficient hunters of forage fish than seabirds, was a factor.

Dean Stockwell, a research associate professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks with a specialty in phytoplankton, said the ocean changes have the potential to affect plant life at the bottom of the food web but it’s too soon to know.

Of immediate concern is whether warmer water will allow harmful algae containing toxins to stay viable long enough for shellfish to eat them and pass toxins to marine mammals and people. Toxins are being carried to the Arctic, Stockwell said.

“The question with global warming types of things is, ‘Can it get a foothold? Can they do damage?’” he said.

Seabird experts wonder if toxins played a role in recent seabird deaths by affecting their ability to forage.

No one has connected the dots, said Britt, the NOAA fisheries biologist.

“At the moment, nobody’s sitting with in-hand a comprehensive research study that covers the birds and the mammals and the fish and the zooplankton all in one synthesized report,” he said, adding that it will take researchers more time to figure out what’s going on.

Meantime, Kotlik resident Keyes is researching climate change effects in her coastal village of 650 as project coordinator for a team working under a Bureau of Indian Affairs program.

The absence of sea ice since mid-February meant taking land routes to visit nearby villages, she said. And seal hunters this spring found bearded seals to harvest but not near the village.

Like the cod fishermen, “They had to go farther north,” Keyes said.

Boeing 737 Max train

  • Boeing has been through a tough month as it faces a bevy of lawsuits and investigations.
  • However, it may have even more serious and fundamental issues to confront such as fixing the design flaw in 737 Max, regaining the trust of passengers and crew, and maybe even coming up with a replacement for the 737 Max.
  • The global fleet of 371 Boeing 737 Max airliners have been grounded since the crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET302.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

It's been a tough 30 days for Boeing. In the month since the tragic crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET302, the American aviation giant has seen its hot-selling 737 Max airliner grounded, its stock plunged 10%, and its reputation tarnished by the scandal.

Boeing admitted last week that a faulty sensor triggered the 737 Max's Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System or MCAS on both the Lion Air Flight JT610 and the Ethiopian Airlines plane. The system's activation precipitated nose dives that likely led to both crashes.

"The 737 Max grounding and what we are learning from it shows that this is not the typical airplane accident we've seen in the past and this is not the typical airplane grounding we've seen recently," Henry Harteveldt, travel industry analyst and founder of Atmosphere Research Group, told Business Insider. "This is a very serious problem for Boeing and a big problem for the airline operators and a problem I don't think will be easy to fix."

Read more: Boeing's reputation has been stained by the 737 Max, and it's going to have to fight to convince people the plane is safe.

This week, Boeing investors filed a proposed class-action lawsuit in Chicago alleging the company defrauded its shareholders by failing to reveal potential safety shortcomings of the 737 Max airliner after two fatal crashes in five months.

Lawyers representing the 346 victims of Lion Air Flight JT610 and the Ethiopian crash have filed multiple suits against Boeing.

Boeing 737 MAXAt the same time, the airlines whose 371 grounded 737 Max are sitting in storage collecting dust have initiated compensation proceedings to collect damages from Boeing.

Boeing's troubles are mounting and things are going to get worse before it gets better.

Design trouble

The US Department of Transportation has commenced an audit on how the Federal Aviation Administration managed to certify the 737 Max to fly with substantial control issues.

Boeing and the FAA's cozy relationship has come under scrutiny from members of Congress.

Certification issues aside, Boeing will have to answer for the design flaw that is at the heart of the controversy surrounding the 737 Max in the coming weeks and months.

To fit the Max's larger, more fuel-efficient engines, Boeing had to position the engine farther forward and up. This change disrupted the plane's center of gravity and caused the Max to have a tendency to tip its nose upward during flight, increasing the likelihood of a stall. In response, Boeing created MCAS as a software fix to automatically counteract that tendency and point the nose of the plane down when the plane's angle-of-attack (AOA) sensor triggers a warning.

"MCAS was a band-aid that infected the wound instead of healing it," Ross Aimer, an aviation consultant and former Boeing 787 training captain, said in an interview with Business Insider.

Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 Max 8 ET AVJOne of the most confounding issues with MCAS is that it can be triggered by a single AOA sensor even though there are two on the plane. This is a departure from Boeing standard operating procedure which normally calls for a dual point of failure.

"Since you have two (AOA sensors) in order to get certified, why not use them, I just don't understand it," aviation consultant and former aeronautical engineer Robert Mann told Business Insider in an interview.

"From a design perspective, it doesn't make any sense."

Pilots and passengers don't trust the 737 Max

One of the 737 Max's greatest selling points was the idea that it could be easily integrated into existing 737 fleets with minimal additional training. Since the 737 has long been one of the most dependable airplanes in the world, this congruency helped make the 737 Max a hot seller.

However, the 737 Max is a very different plane from the 737NG it replaced. It has new engines mounted in a different location, redesigned wings, and new avionics. These are all things the pilots knew about.

What they didn't know was that MCAS had been installed on the 737 Max. Pilots found out about MCAS being on the plane after the Lion Air 737 Max crash into the Java Sea on October 28.

Boeing 737 Max 8 cockpit"Boeing in the past always told the pilots and airlines exactly what was on those airplanes," Aimer said. "I have been a Boeing pilot for over 50 years and have loved their products, but they have lost my trust."

Aimer, who is the CEO of Aviation Consulting Experts and a retired United Airlines Captain, feels like Boeing put money ahead of the well-being of passengers and crew.

"Boeing kept that from us purely because they didn't want to bother the airlines with some extra training," he told us. "This was purely a monetary decision on behalf of Boeing and the airlines themselves to keep this away from the pilots and the result was disastrous."

And then there's the traveling public.

poll conducted by Business Insider a week after the Ethiopian crash showed that 53% of American adults would not want to fly on a Boeing 737 Max even after the FAA clears the aircraft for service.

"The 737 Max has stained Boeing's brand reputation," Harteveldt said. "This can't be denied."

Business Insider reached out to Boeing for comment on the matter. A Boeing spokesperson noted that company CEO Dennis Muilenberg made a speech on Thursday touting the need to regain public trust.

"We know every person who steps aboard one of our airplanes places their trust in us," Muilenburg said in the speech. "We’ll do everything possible to earn and re-earn that trust and confidence from our airline customers and the flying public in the weeks and months ahead."

"We take the responsibility to build and deliver airplanes that are safe to fly and can be safely flown by every single one of the professional and dedicated pilots all around the world," the Boeing CEO added.

Boeing might need a replacement for the 737 Max

The Boeing 737 Max is the fastest-selling plane in Boeing history. It's the latest generation of Boeing's money-making 737 family of airliners.

The various versions of the Boeing 737 currently account for 80% of Boeing's 5,800-plane order backlog.

It's going to be an uphill battle for Boeing to restore confidence in the grounded jet.

"You can't hide the 737, you've got thousands of them of all types flying worldwide today for airlines," Harteveldt said.

As a result, you can't simply rebrand the plane.

Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 Max 8 storage"People are going to see right through that," he added.

Therefore, Boeing is going to either have to convince people to fly the 737 Max or come up with a replacement.

"Yes, (737 Max) is the last iteration," Teal Group aviation analyst Richard Aboulafia told Business Insider in March. "They ran out of steam in terms of range and capacity."

That means whichever aircraft Boeing chooses to replace the 737 will be a clean sheet design.

It's not all gloom and doom for Boeing

The situation Boeing finds itself in is not insurmountable.

Aimer said Boeing's engineering team should be able to come up with an effective fix for the 737 Max.

"They can fix this issue, right now they need to be honest and forthright and try to fix this issue to the best of their ability," Aimer said.

Boeing 737 MAX 8 airlinerHarteveldt said Boeing can convince passengers to feel safe in the 737 Max.

"Boeing has to become a bit more of a consumer-facing organization to reinstill confidence in its brand so that the saying 'if it's not Boeing I'm not going' can be said again with pride by travelers," the analyst said.

On the other hand, Mann believes Boeing won't have to do much to get people to return to the 737 Max.

"Once the airplane routinely does what it's designed to do and safely, all of this goes away. And it's crass to say it, but the fact is the traveling public has a very short memory," Mann said.

Session: Ambush! Move Out!:: Know when it's always darkest? (Mission 9)      Comment   Translate Page

by phiwum

Serious spoilers ahead. Do not read if you plan on playing this mission soon.

Session reports for missions 3-8 available on the Ambush! forum.

First time playing Move Out! I have to say it's much harder than I expected. The Germans play smarter and there are more traps for the squads. I was not ready for this, as you'll see.

This scenario uses Map A, with north at the top. Visibility is four, since it is late night nearing dawn.

My squad consists of Addison, IN 3, and Berkowitz, IN 4 with WS +2. Connie and Dale have IN 3, but Connie has WS -1 while Dale has WS +2. Both have good PC. Estevez has IN 2 and nothing special about him. Fitzy, Gerard and Higgenbottom have IN 1. There is no reason to be very familiar with most of this squad, to be honest. You won't hear of most of them again.

We were supposed to clear the road for an armored column, and boy, will those guys be surprised when they show up. The remnants of my squad will be hiding somewhere off the road, avoiding any contact with the convoy. It can be emotionally overwhelming watching good men charge into their certain deaths. I speak from experience.

We start with two satchel charges and a bazooka with four additional rounds. I had a good weapons roll and bought three SMGs, four rifles, a pistol, 12 grenades and three additional satchels. We also had a radio, but could not bear to use it and tell people how we were doing.

We began in the southwest quadrant. Addison, Fitzy and Dale held back off-map, while Berkowitz was situated in the middle of a squad following the tree line adjacent to the raised roadway. Immediately, the flares came and kept coming. A total of 13 flares fired, all but one of which illuminated at least one of my men. I learned to go prone after every move, since someone would be shot at each time a flare went off. The point man was necessarily crouching when this happened.

Once Berk's full squad had entered (all but Estevez, carrying a never-used bazooka), Addison's men entered, with Fitzy on point. With a PC 4, he's not great for that role, but I didn't want to risk either the NCO (who went second) or my hero, Dale, who is nigh perfect in every way. PC and driving skill both 8. I'm kinda smitten to be honest, but I know it won't work out, as I'm hetero and he's cardboard. This squad entered at hex A13 with the point man rushing to the next cover and going prone, followed by Addison doing the same and Dale taking Addison's spot. We managed to make it to the woods with this squad and meet up around row G. Berk was the only casualty at this point, wounded by a lucky shot (roll the dice often enough and you'll roll a 0 at some point).

This is a punishing entry. In fact, the flares were still coming at this time. The only difference was that now, the range was shorter for the unseen snipers.

I gathered Fitzy and Dale in the cover at H12 and I12 to rush for the building. Fitzy was itching to prove himself, muttering, "No, no, I should go. Really, it should be me. I mean, we wouldn't want to risk a pretty boy like Dale, would we?" But Dale would have none of it, explaining the importance of weapon skill and his superior driving, just in case we find a jeep or tank or whatnot. He leapt out and rushed the end of the building in hex J12.

Big mistake. PC only matters if you get to roll for it.

Two veteran infantrymen and an officer in the three hexes M10, N10 and N11. They had advantage and two turns while Dale had only one turn. They lobbed a few grenades at him, harmlessly, before the officer remembered he has a machine pistol. One burst and my manliest of men was dead.

The others were content to throw grenades. Now, the relevant paragraph reads thus (this is not much of a spoiler, it is a common nighttime paragraph, I'd wager):
[o] If no active target in sight due to darkness, but an active target within six hexes, stand and toss a grenade.[/o]
I may have misinterpreted this passage.
[o]No targets were in sight, regardless of darkness, but there were targets within six hexes.[/o]
As a result, I let them continue to lob grenades, resulting in the wounding of Higgenbottom, despite the fact he was prone.

I ran Connie along the back of the building, entering hex L13 through the door and going prone. He was within command radius of Addison, who was in command radius of Berk, so he could effectively be given turns from both. Next round he crouched and took a couple of shots, but jammed his gun. Meanwhile, Fitzy ran to enter the building's other hex, stepping delicately over Dale's body and wishing he hadn't been so surly about the great man. Now, if you've played this before, you might know what happened.
[o] The roof of the building collapsed.[/o]
Fitzy was incapacitated. Two inactive soldiers and two wounded. It gets worse. Much worse.

Gerard joined Connie in hex L13, making sure that neither party was visible during German rounds. I was worried about the convoy showing up and thought that perhaps I shouldn't dawdle. I think this was a mistake and the convoy won't show up in Condition 3 while in rounds, but I didn't know that at the time. With Gerard (WS -1) taking occasional potshots at the Germans, Estevez crossed the road into the brush out of sight (Hex I9). The following round (or perhaps the one after that, when the Action Round Track was in my favor), Addison and Berk fed him enough turns to charge assault the infantryman in hex M10, swinging his bazooka like a madman. This put him out of command radius, but if I could capture that soldier, I reckoned I would be safe from the other guys. They were done lobbing grenades.

No dice on the first assault. The next round, Estevez had one turn at a disadvantage. Gerard, with the help of an extra turn or two from a commander, charge assaulted the soldier in Estevez's hex. Between the two of them, they made the capture.

Connie unjammed his weapon and charged the soldier nearest the bridge, hex N11, the following round, with the same plan in mind. He made the capture. Higgenbottom had made a rare daring attempt to join the fray, hoping that the self-preservation mode of the officer would prevent any harm. It didn't. He was incapacitated on the road. This was an obvious error on my part. The next turn, the officer was in self-preservation mode and again, I may have misinterpreted a paragraph to my disadvantage. Again, this is not a very secret paragraph, but I'll put it in spoiler tags.
[o] "If adjacent to active US soldier through traversable hexside and a grenade is available, crouch and throw grenade. Exception: If active German in the US hex, charge assault to kill."

Now, I think I interpreted in correctly, but it depends on whether the exception applies only to the consequent (the "then" part) or to the whole. I think it's an exception to the whole...[/o]
...so the officer charge assaulted, wounding Estevez. In short order, he killed Estevez and incapacitated Gerard. We're down to a wounded Berkowitz and healthy Addison and Connie, guarding a prisoner. The other prisoner had been freed by the officer. I've never seen that happen, dammit.

Addison took a turn from Berk, rushing to join Connie in the safe presence of a prisoner (there would be no charge assault because we were two hexes from the other Germans). I took a cheap move of tossing a satchel charge into their hex, wounding the infantryman and then something happened.
[o]Addison, because he was carrying a bulky radio in the woods, tripped and injured himself, receiving damage as from a pistol. He incapacitated himself. Lots of sharp, pointy sticks in the woods, you know. This is why the Finnish rake their forests.[/o]
So Addison was incapacitated. If I wasn't licked before, I was now. Connie took one last freebie shot at the bad guys (incapacitating the soldier) and marched out dragging Addison with the prisoner in tow. Addison died before reaching Berkowitz. Stopped and looted Dale's corpse, fired one more one last shot in frustration to no avail, and started dragging Fitzy down the road. Berk joined him and grabbed Higgenbottom. Fitzy snuffed it before we made it to the exit.

Four dead, one incapacitated in German hands and three survivors. Now, I must say that Addison's incapacitation was kinda bullshit. That event is a bit much. But otherwise, I've got few complaints. The traps and random events make the game a bit flukier than the original set. The Germans seem less predictable so far, which is good, but I think I'll learn to predict them as time goes on.
It was a spectacular, ignoble defeat. On the plus (?) side, Higgenbottom is still with us and has been since Mission 2. And I have eighteen points to spend on new squaddies. I'll have to spend eight on a new commander. I don't think one is enough. That leaves either one IN 5, one IN 3 and two IN 1s, as I've had, or three IN 2s and one IN 1. I'll probably go the second route. I will not go with two IN 3s and two IN 0s. That's too much cruft at the bottom.

Gerard got four points and Berk and Higgenbottom one each. Losers.

Comments, suggestions and criticisms welcome.

Pentagon awaiting new request from DHS that could send more troops to border      Comment   Translate Page

US Army(WASHINGTON) -- After President Donald Trump told White House reporters on Friday that "we're gonna put more troops on the border," the Pentagon was awaiting a new request over the weekend from the Department of Homeland Security for more support along the Southwest border said the Pentagon's top official.

Previous discussions about what further role the U.S. military may play along the border with Mexico, according to one U.S. official who spoke to ABC News, included the prospect that the military could be used to build and manage tent cities to house migrants at two locations along the southwest border.

There are currently 3,900 active duty forces and 2,100 National Guardsmen serving on the southern border in separate missions supporting Customs and Border Protection.

Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan had earlier told reporters at the Pentagon that he expected an increase in U.S. military support to the Pentagon.

"It shouldn't come as a surprise that we would provide more support to the border," Shanahan told reporters.

"Our support is very elastic and given the deterioration there at the border you would expect that we would provide more support," he said.

However, Shanahan also said that the Pentagon had not received a formal Request for Assistance" (RFA) from the Department of Homeland Security.

" But we've been having a number of conversations with DHS," said Shanahan who added that this weekend a Pentagon planning team will follow up on what more support the Pentagon can provide along the border.

"Where are we on barrier construction? Where do we stand on the current support? and then on the areas we anticipate, What type of preliminary planning should we be doing prior to receiving that request for assistance," said Shanahan.

Like the previous RFA’s from DHS, the new one will list the additional capabilities that the agency needs along the border. Those capabilities will likely require more troops, but the exact number of troops will depend on how the Pentagon matches up what it can provide to meet the request from DHS.

A U.S. official said the Pentagon's discussions with DHS have included discussion of whether the U.S. military could be used to build and manage tent cities for migrants at two locations along the southern border

Another official said once the Pentagon receives the request from DHS, it will have to be reviewed to ensure that the requested capabilities fall under the legal restrictions for U.S. military troops operating domestically under the Posse Comitatus Act.

That would include whether the U.S. troops could interact with migrants should there be a request for a tent city to house detained migrants.

A Pentagon spokesman acknowledged that in the past the U.S. military has provided facilities to house migrants, but has not been involved in detention operations. . "We’ve never engaged in that and I don’t know if we have any plans to do anything like that,” said Pentagon spokesman Charlie Summers.

Holocaust survivor set to talk      Comment   Translate Page
RICHMOND - On October 2, 1943, 8-year-old Steen Metz was taken from his childhood home in Odense, Denmark and sent to Theresienstadt Concentration Camp in Terezin that was then Czechoslovakia, along with his mother and father. Hunger, harsh living conditions, constant uncertainty and death hung over Metz’s head.

His father died of starvation less than six months after arrival. Life itself would be a big question mark for Metz until he and his mother were liberated on April 15, 1945, one month before the scheduled launch of the camp’s newly installed gas chamber.

“I was sent to the camp for one reason by the highest-rated discriminator in all of history [Adolph Hitler]. I was Jewish,” Metz said.

Labeled a Jew, Metz was fortunate enough to emerge from this horrific experience with another label, that of survivor. His story is just one of the millions that became part of one of the darkest times in history. Sadly, as the number of survivors dwindle, so do their stories.

Metz turns 84 next month and was unable to speak of his experience until 2012.

“Now I share my story with survivors and others which sounds very normal, but after it happened, we didn’t talk about it,” Metz said. “I’m glad I came out of the closet, so to speak, and started talking about it. It’s become a passion of mine. It’s very important.”

Metz is a member of the speaker’s bureau at the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center in Skokie as well as represents the Holocaust Museum & Education Center of Southwest Florida. Since speaking out, Metz has addressed tens of thousands in hopes of keeping his story, and the stories of others who faced this horrific ideal, alive, so history does not repeat itself.

“I want people to never forget that the Holocaust happened,” Metz said. “It is more important than ever before. There is an increase in Holocaust deniers, and anti-Semitism is on the rise. This event is getting further and further back in history and we’re afraid people will forget about it. I ask that people be my ambassador so that my story goes on for future generations to hear and learn from.”

The Barrington resident will address the 600-plus students of Richmond-Burton High School on Tuesday in two separate sessions.

Metz will tell his story of his experience of persecution, survival and liberation.

“Sadly, we’re running out of survivors that can give a personal first-hand account and we need to ensure their stories continue to be told,” said Tad DePorter , head of R-B’s social studies department. “I want it to be something they can see. I don’t want them to have just a broad understanding of the Holocaust. I want them to see how individual people were dramatically impacted. One of the downfalls of teaching history is lumping large groups of people together, so I hope the kids can connect to his individual story and understand the importance of speaking out against something isn’t right and the resistance of the mistreatment of other people.”

Metz said he is amazed at the level of attentiveness and respect that the students he has spoken to show. One teacher commented to him that she doesn’t know what he did, but that the students were mesmerized by him. Metz hopes to continue to hold the attention of others in order to spread his very important story and message.

“People are often surprised by the extent of which we suffered. Not only from starvation and mistreatment, but uncertainty,” Metz said. “I hope that they receive the message to not take life for granted and to treat other people the way you wanted to be treated. Treat everyone the same way no matter their color skin or race. We have much more in common than what differentiates us.”

I’ve eaten once at Pho Friendly 18 (in January) and at Pho Metro Scarborough. Mississauga has several authentic Vietnamese restaurants to go with its forthcoming 9-acre Saigon Park in honour of the 15,000 Vietnamese Canadians living in this city. My top two are below... . Pho Ngoc Yen restaurant (near 401 & Dixie, southwest of Pearson airport) has the same 4.6 Google rating as Pho Friendly 18; Ngoc Yen has 6 times more reviews despite its location. Vietnamese Mississaugans feel this is one of the GTA’s top restaurants for its authentic food and décor. Recommended tried dishes (in no order): Fresh shrimp & pork salad roll; NY’s special pho (rare, beef balls, boneless beef shank w rice noodles); My Tho-style seafood & pork w clear noodles (with/without soup); Hue-style beef & pork with vermicelli in spicy lemon grass soup (bun bo hue); vermicelli with bbq pork, bbq chicken & spring rolls (dry); bbq pork chop, bbq chicken , shredded pork, fried egg with broken rice; breadfruit shrimp & pork salad w sesame crackers; mango salad & dried shrimp w shrimp chips; bbq chicken w lemon leaf w sticky rice; grilled green mussels w green onions & peanuts; pan-fried pork & snails pancake w betel leaf; rare beef ceviche. http://ngocyenrestaurant.com/gal.html . Other good Vietnamese restaurants in Mississauga: Pho Queen City (Hurontario & Dundas); I Love Pho (Burhamthorpe & Mavis branch); Pho Mi 99 (Heartland Town Centre branch); Lotus Island Vietnamese Eatery (Dixie & Lakeshore); Pho Brothers (Dixie & Dundas). . Once the Saigon park is opened, you could have lunch in Pho Hoa 89... work it off in the lovely park... visit Heartland for shopping and for Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk in Pho Mi 99... and finish with dinner in Pho Ngoc Yen.

Seems like a good deal to us. A dozen flights in 2019 with companion for us for $69 and a modest spend.

Sure, two years are better than one year. But one year suits us just fine and we are not in a position to manufacture the spend required for the points needed for the two-year.

I didn't want to manufacture the spend for the 2-year deal either. By applying for the business card at the same time one can easily hit the required threshold.

Powerful Storms Continue to Move Across South      Comment   Translate Page
Powerful, deadly storms continue to move across the South on Sunday after producing suspected tornadoes and damaging several homes. National Weather Service meteorologist John Moore said a possible twister touched down Saturday in the Vicksburg, Mississippi, area. No injuries have been reported, but officials said several businesses and vehicles were damaged. Trees were down throughout the hilly city on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi. Heavy rains and storms continued to rake the Magnolia State into the night, moving into Alabama. Multiple people were injured and several homes were damaged in Hamilton, Mississippi, said Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley. A tornado was reported in the area 60 miles (100 kilometers) southwest of Memphis, Tennessee, at the time. At least one mobile home was destroyed, throwing a man from the mobile home. No fatalities were reported. The roof of a hotel in New Albany, Mississippi, was damaged, although the cause was unclear. Mississippi State University's 21,000 students huddled in basements and hallways as a tornado came near the school's campus in Starkville. University spokesman Sid Salter said some debris, possibly carried by the tornado, was found on campus, but no injuries were reported and no buildings were damaged. Trees were down and at least some minor structural damage was reported in residential areas east of the campus. In East Texas, the Angelina County Sheriff's Office said an 8-year-old and a 3-year-old died when strong winds toppled a tree onto the back of their family's car in Lufkin while it was in motion. Capt. Alton Lenderman said the parents, who were in the front seats, were not injured. The large storm system also knocked out power to thousands and caused some flash flooding. The weather service said the system is expected to shift to the Ohio Valley and the Southeast on Sunday. More than 140,000 customers remained without power in Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas late Saturday. Robertson County Sheriff Gerald Yezak told The Associated Press a tornado hit the small Central Texas city of Franklin, overturning mobile homes and damaging other residences. Franklin is located about 125 miles (200 kilometers) south of Dallas. The weather service said preliminary information showed an EF-3 tornado touched down with winds of 140 mph (225.3 kph). Crews will continue to survey the damage over the next few days. Two people were hospitalized for injuries not thought to be life-threatening, while others were treated at the scene for minor injuries, Yezak said. Some people had to be extricated from their homes. Meteorologist Monique Sellers said they've received reports of downed trees, as well as damage to buildings and a transmission tower. Winds of up to 60 mph (96.56 kph) were reported in Cherokee County, Texas, damaging two homes in Alto but not injuring anyone. Alto is situated about 140 miles (225 kilometers) north of Houston.

It’s a good deal for the initial points or companion pass, but after that there is no reason to keep it as the chase reserve and preferred have better earning on points and transfers to southwest are 1:1

I know the old card actually cost money to hold but the new one might not depending on how you value the annual points. Very occasionally there were offers of extra points on the SW card that exceeded the value I would get from the other Chase cards (which I don't have yet), although possibly not if you want to use the travel portal, etc. etc.

Race report: B.A.A. 5K, April 13, 2019      Comment   Translate Page
I ran the B.A.A. 5K yesterday, finishing in a time of 18:53 chip time (18:58 gun time) which was good enough for second in my age group and 3rd Master female.  A really fun part of a great visit to Boston.

Quite a few people seemed surprised that I would travel up to Boston on marathon weekend just to run the 5K.  But it wasn't just for that reason.  Last year, when I raced the Boston Marathon, there were many many things that I wanted to do while up there, but abstained from, due to the need to rest before the race.  Traveling up for 24 hours gave me an opportunity to scratch those itches.

Of course, for a while on Friday morning, I was worried I might not make it.  My plane pushed back from the gate, only to sit there for an extended period of time before the captain announced that one of the engines wasn't able to start, and so we'd be returning to the gate to try to start it there.  The unspoken understanding was that if they couldn't start the engine, we'd have to deplane.

I checked my phone, and confirmed that all other flights on Southwest to Boston that day were sold out.  Not good. And ironically frustrating, since it was only 12 hours ago that I had swapped onto the 8:55 am flight from the 11:20 am.  Ooooh I was going to be pissed if the 8:55 didn't leave while the 11:20 did.

But fortunately, they were able to get the engine started.  And though we departed nearly 50 minutes behind schedule, we made up enough time in the air to land only 20 minutes late.  A non-issue in the end.

***

Once I landed in Boston, I took the T to Central Square in Cambridge, where I got lunch (3 guesses as to what) and made a pilgrimage to the former site of Manray, where I spent my Wednesday nights while in law school.  Then to Harvard Square, where I hit the Coop (essentially the joint Harvard-MIT bookstore) to buy a mug and a teddy bear with a big crimson H on it, before I hit the Garage (think a tiny shopping mall where all the stores are dedicated to sub-culture stuff - comics, hemp, tattoos, anime).  Then to my hotel.  The B.A.A. mails out bibs for the 5K in advance, so there was no need to go to the expo.

Once there, I checked the weather for my 5K.  It didn't look great.  Wind and rain were supposed to roll in and linger until 10:00 am (the race was at 8:00).  Oh well.  The forecast had looked much better even 24 hours ago, when it was going to be windy but dry.  But at least it wasn't a goal race.

I had brought my "second life" Vaporflys to race in - the pair with several hundred miles that have compacted down into a nice racing flat of sorts.  However, historically I've had traction issues with those shoes on wet pavement.  Hmmm....

I normally follow the rule of nothing new on race day, but this wasn't a goal race, so I felt a bit more comfortable experimenting.  I headed over to the local drug/convenience store, where I purchased a set of non-slip sole pads - the type normally affixed to women's dress shoes.  I stuck those to the bottom of my Vaporflys, on the forefoot.  Either they'd work, they'd make no difference, or they'd fall off.  But hopefully, they were low-risk.

I was staying in the financial district, about a mile away from the race start in Boston Common (the 5Kstart/finish was where the buses pick up on marathon race morning).  So it was easy to warm-up by jogging to the start area to check out stuff, then back to my hotel for one final bathroom break, and then back to the start once more.  A few 45 second bouts of harder running, some drills, some strides, and I jumped into my corral.

Since this was a pretty big race, with over 8000 runners, they assembled the corrals about 200m from the start line.  We were required to be in our corrals no later than 7:45 for an 8 am start.  It wasn't at all ideal for a 5K, where I'd prefer to be doing strides until about 5 minutes before, but it was what it was.  To be safe, I stepped into the corral at 7:39 - there really wasn't too much difference between standing for 15 minutes and for 20, and I didn't want to get shut out.

The corrals were self-seeded, which I hope they change for next year.  I lined up in the area for 5-6 minute miles - realistic, since I thought I was in shape to run around 6:00 pace or a bit faster on a good day.  There, I was surrounded by a wide range of runners - some much faster than me, and others who seemed not to know why it mattered to seed oneself appropriately.

Since I thought I might be a contender for masters prize money (based on gun time) I wanted to start fairly close to the front.  On the other hand, the start area was fairly narrow, and I also understood that there was a slight bottle neck in the course about 200m in, where the rails on each side narrowed in advance of a tight turn.  This is a very fast race, and I really didn't want to wedge myself in front of a battalion of sub-17 minute guys.  So reluctantly, I moved back - hitting what I thought was the best compromise between my focus on gun time and my desire not to screw up someone else's race.

***

The weather was not great for a 5K.  It was in the low 60s, which wasn't too bad, but it had been raining for some time and the roads were wet with puddles all around.  The wind was also blowing at a good clip from the west, with strong gusts from other directions.  We'd have a headwind going out, and a tailwind coming back on this out and back course.  This was better than the reverse, since I'd have more people to use as windblocks earlier in the race, but still not ideal.

It was still raining as I stood in the corral, though not too hard. The rain itself wasn't a bad thing - without it the humidity would have been thick enough to affect my performance, but the rain provided a nice cooling effect that countered the warmth.   I had warmed up in a longsleeve shirt and a cheap plastic poncho, and I kept both on in the starting corral to keep me warm.

***

At around 7:55 the corrals was marched up to the start line, with the elites and the wheelchair racers then slotted in ahead of us.  The race start ended up delayed a few minutes while the roads were cleared, so it wasn't until 8:05 that the gun actually started.  That was 25 minutes of standing, pre-race, and I could tell it from my first strides.  Not that it mattered anyway - the first quarter mile was ridiculously congested, especially with the early bottle neck on the course, and so it was best to stay patient and wait it out before easing into 5K effort as my body woke up.

As I noted, most of the first mile+ of the race was into a headwind, and a fairly strong one.  It seemed like most about me were hammering into it, but I went with a negative split strategy - find a group and tuck in and conserve until we turned around and had a tailwind.  Oddly enough, even when I found a group, it seemed like I wasn't that shielded.  But maybe that's just me.

After the first mile marker, we dropped down into an underpass below a highway before running back up.  I'm a really good downhill runner, so I was able to use the descent to surge and pass some people, maintaining pace on the following climb back to the surface. Then around a turn and we joined up with the marathon course on Commonwealth Avenue, heading east.  Down and up on the underpass again (with more passing), and then right on Hereford and left on Boylston just like the marathon.  With as much splashing as I remember from last year.  But the water was warmer, at least.

Boylston seems long when you're finishing the marathon.  Having done both races, I can tell you it feels even longer when the marathon finish line is an arch that you run through that is 1200m from the finish of the 5K.

We were now in the third mile, and we had the tailwind, so I knew it was time to go.  I gave it my all, but I only had so much juice in the legs.  Which, in retrospect, wasn't all that shocking given the 10 mile (er...9.95 mile) race only 6 days ago.   However, people were fading all around me, suffering the logical consequences of going too hard into the headwind, and I was able to pass quite a few, though I wasn't doing too well myself.

I emptied the tank I had, and then we turned the corner into Boston Common, and I turned the tank over and shook out the last drops.  As I approached the finish line, I realized the clock was still in the 18s and I was going to break 19.  Well, that was nice.  I knew I was fit enough to do that, but wasn't sure it would happen at this race given the weather and recovery from Cherry Blossom.

I kicked as hard as I could, got myself across both finish mats, and then stopped my watch (well..actually lapped and then stopped).  18:53, which I hoped meant a few seconds faster, since I had waited until the second mat to stop it.

***

Splits were:
Mile 1: 6:15
Mile 2: 6:04
Mile 3 plus the last .11 - 6:35 (5:55 pace).

So a slow first mile, and not as fast on the last as I would have liked.   But I think the slow first mile is the logical result of a headwind, early congestion, and standing for 25 minutes before the start.

My PR is 18:51, and so I was tantalizingly close.  But I'm not too upset about missing it.  Based on this result, I know I'm in shape to run a big PR at that distance and there are plenty of fast 5Ks coming up to take a shot.

***

After the race, I grabbed my t-shirt and then headed back to my hotel getting hopelessly lost on the way.  The financial district is a maze of twisting, turning streets with names that change every few blocks.  And it doesn't work to use stores as landmarks, since every other block has a Starbucks, a CVS, and a Chipotle.  Finally, with the help of three different strangers with cell phones, I found my way back, where I showered, packed, and then checked out, leaving my backpack at the front desk.

From there, I headed back downtown to Boylston street to watch the men's and women's elite B.A.A. mile races, then on to the expo, where I stood in line way too long to pick up my bib.  Then on to check out all the vendors, taste samples, talk to people, and do all the other stuff you shouldn't do when you've got a marathon the next day.  I thought I'd be a bit wistful about not running the marathon, but I wasn't - instead, it was the most relaxed and cheery I've ever been at bib pick-up.

Then on to lunch, overlooking the finish line and people-watching, followed by a return to Cambridge to tour my old grad school and law school campus (20 year reunion coming up next year, oh WOW).  Then a pilgrimage to the side of the old Lincoln's Inn (now a private residence).  After that, I went back to the hotel to grab my back pack and Tetris (if that's not a verb it should be) all of my recent purchases into the bag, and then to the airport for a 6 pm flight home.

My souvenir haul ended up being two race shirts (5K and marathon), two bibs, one medal (for the 5K), three magnets, three headbands, a new pair of sunglasses, a pair of shorts, one teddy bear, one mug, a book on how to build cat castles, and a decorative unicorn horn for a cat (I'm not making the last two up).  I somehow managed to squeeze it all into my backpack, and later, to fit the backpack under the seat in front of me on the plane.  Quite an achievement.  And a fun weekend.
The astute observer will note
that the non-slip pads are still there.

***

Other notes:

  • The non-stick pads on the bottoms of the Vaporflys stayed on for the entire race.  And...it felt like I had better traction on the wet pavement than I've noted in the past.  Possibly a placebo effect, but I don't care.  Whatever works.   I think I'm going to try this again, maybe with bathtub non-slip decals.
  • My second life Vaporflys are working better and better for shorter distances, the more I run in them (and presumably, the more the supposedly magic cushion gets compacted).  With each race, they have a little less bounce, and are thus a bit more maneuverable.  I can also kick in them, in a way I couldn't when they were fresh and bouncy.  It's really too bad they don't sell "pre-crushed" Vaporflys.
  • It took several hours for the B.A.A. to post the results.  It turned out that I was third masters female, which earned me a $100 in cash.  So woo.
