Jason Licht is the definition of the grim reaper style GM. If his players get hurt there is always someone who says, it was a good pick or signing. Cut the crap and Fireee Licht. He’s terrible at his job and should’ve never been hired to begin with. The only thing good about the NFL now is seeing Licht get Fired and watching Jameis become a HOF’r despite the fans and media.

Chris Tormey’s extended football coaching journey started with a beer and sandwich at Jack & Dan’s      Comment   Translate Page

MOSCOW, Idaho – Had life taken a different course, Chris Tormey’s athletic legacy would be bounded by the universe of Gonzaga Prep and Idaho Vandals fans in the early- and mid-1970s.

They would remember him as a Spokane high school standout and an All-Big Sky Conference linebacker, defensive end and team captain who persevered against a pair of serious knee injuries before spending a brief time in the Washington Redskins’ preseason camp in 1978.

Afforded a redshirt year by one of those injuries, Tormey took the opportunity to, as he said, “focus, become introspective. See what life was about outside of football.”

Following his tryout with the Redskins, Tormey was contemplating whether to pursue a career in teaching or business.

Then he got a phone call.

It set in motion events that led to an ongoing four-decade coaching career. It’s a ride that included being on the staff of the 1991 national champion University of Washington team, and head coaching stops at Idaho and Nevada.

In five successful years at his alma mater, Tormey completed a trifecta of defeating Boise State three times (the Vandals’ most recent victories in the series), toppling Washington State once (the first Idaho win against the Cougars in 34 years), and leading the Vandals to their first bowl win, against Southern Mississippi in the 1998 Humanitarian Bowl.

Coaching has expanded Tormey’s legacy to the point he is being inducted into the Idaho Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday in conjunction with the annual North Idaho Sports Banquet at the Coeur d’Alene Resort.

Sports is equal parts scores and stories. The scores establish the framework of a Hall of Fame career, but the stories give it color and texture. Tormey’s fateful phone call as he considered his future after his short time in the NFL is one such story. The call came from his former world history teacher, the Rev. Patrick Stewart, G-Prep’s chief administrator.

“He used to call me Mel,” Tormey said.

The disparity between a rangy linebacker and a rotund crooner (Mel Torme) with a similar last name apparently amused a Jesuit priest with a sharp wit he used to enlarge teenagers’ concept of the world while keeping them in line in the classroom.

“He said, ‘Mel, I understand you’re looking for employment, and you have your degree.’

“I said, ‘Yes, Father.’

“ ‘Are you quite sure about that?’

“ ‘Yes, Father.’

“ Then meet me at Jack & Dan’s at noon.’ ”

G-Prep had an unexpected opening for an assistant football coach and teacher.

“Over a red beer and a ham sandwich, (Stewart) offered me a job for $11,500,” Tormey said of his lunch that day at the iconic Spokane bar.

Two years teaching and coaching at his old high school convinced Tormey that football was his future. In 1980, he became a graduate assistant at Washington. After two years as a GA with Don James’ Husky teams, Tormey joined Dennis Erickson’s Idaho staff as a defensive line coach.

He returned to Washington in 1984. Over the next 11 years, he coached tight ends and linebackers, and was promoted to defensive coordinator when James resigned and Jim Lambright succeeded him.

His experience at Washington with James defined Tormey’s coaching strategy.

“Don James was at his zenith. He was disciplined, focused, intelligent,” Tormey said. “He ran his program like a CEO runs a large company. Everyone was held accountable. There were systems in place for everything. I decided if I ever became a head coach to incorporate as much of Coach James’ system as possible.”

Tormey got that opportunity when John L. Smith – a former housemate when Tormey and Smith were assistants with the Vandals – left as Idaho’s head coach for a similar job at Utah State.

Tormey sought James’ advice on whether he should return to Idaho for his first head coaching position. He said James told him, “If you think you can win, you’ve got to take this job.”

It was a consequential time for the Vandals. Under Erickson, Keith Gilbertson and Smith, they had established a 15-year reign as a perennial Big Sky championship and playoff contender. When Tormey took over in 1995, Idaho was playing its final season in the Big Sky Conference before making the ambitious move up to what is now the Football Bowl Subdivision.

“It was five of the best years of our lives,” Tormey said of his time in Moscow with his wife, Kellie, and daughters Leah and Emily.

“Our kids were kindergarten age. It was a special time for our family. A great time for our girls.”

An overall 32-23 record that included the 1998 Big West championship and Tormey being named the conference’s coach of the year resulted in interviews for head coaching jobs at UW and Oregon State.

In 2000, Tormey left Idaho for Nevada. The highlight of his four-year tenure with the Wolf Pack was a 28-17 victory against UW in Seattle.

Tormey returned to Washington as an assistant between 2004-08 before spending two years at Hawaii, a year at Washington State, and 1 1/2 seasons at Wyoming as defensive coordinator.

He was the head coach at South Whidbey High School in Langley, Washington, in 2014 before heading to the Canadian Football League as linebackers coach with Montreal in 2015.

Following a season with the Alouettes, he became linebackers coach for the BC Lions for three years. This season, he has the same position with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

At first glance, the series of jobs might seem like a desperate chase. But it amounts to tending a relationship that has been fundamental to Tormey since Stewart inquired about him looking for employment as a football coach.

It’s a relationship that includes many Idaho connections. Fellow Idaho Athletic Hall of Famer Carl Kilsgaard and longtime Spokane Vandals booster Norm Fredekind helped recruit Tormey to Idaho as a player. Don Matthews, a former Idaho player and CFL coach, was a Vandals assistant when he convinced the team to honor Tormey’s scholarship offer after Tormey was injured in high school.

John Yarno, Idaho’s All-America center, was a high school friend, Vandals teammate and fraternity brother. Former Idaho coaches Erickson, Gilbertson and Smith and former Vandals assistant and Hawaii head coach Greg McMackin have been in Tormey’s orbit for decades. He has stories about them all.

“You come together with people you would not ordinarily know or associate with,” Tormey said. “You create friendships that last a lifetime.

“Football has been my livelihood. It’s part of my DNA, my life fabric. The last 52 years have always been about the next season, the next game. I’ve been lucky to have that.”

John Blanchette: Even before Title IX, women’s sports had true pioneers such as Nancy Monroe      Comment   Translate Page

Having never been on an airplane or out of the state of California before her 17th birthday, Nancy Monroe can only explain away her decision to enroll at the University of Idaho as one of those random bursts of pioneer spirit.

Who knew she’d be an actual pioneer?

This is going back almost 50 years in the evolution of women’s sports, predating Title IX even, so it’s no hollow application of the word. But, hey, there’s no expiration date for pioneering, whether it’s Notre Dame basketball coach Muffet McGraw passionately stumping for greater female leadership or the amateur golfers who played a tournament last week at Augusta National, which couldn’t bring itself to admit women as members until 2012.

But real pioneers tend to have a much lower profile.

Until someone acknowledges the trail they’ve blazed, anyway. On Saturday, the Coeur d’Alene-based Idaho Athletic Hall of Fame will induct Monroe in its 2019 class along with former Vandals football coach Chris Tormey, NFL veteran Doug Riesenberg and long-time Pac-12 football official Steve Hudson.

Monroe was Nancy Westermeyer when she arrived in Moscow in 1971, sold on UI by “a couple of boys ahead of me in high school” who had made the jump.

“This sounds like an adventure,” she remembered thinking.

Or a calamity.

“It was a complete shock,” said Monroe, now retired from the Mead School District after 38 years of teaching. “I had no idea where I was going. In Santa Barbara, it doesn’t get above 85 degrees and I landed in Pullman when it was about 105. I cried and begged my mom to come home the first couple of weeks.”

Soon new friends would have to take her emergency shopping “because I had no idea what it means to be in Idaho after Oct. 1.”

But where Monroe felt right at home was in the campus pool. A competitive age-group swimmer since she was 6 and a national record-setter, she’d do Friday night laps in UI’s brand new swim center.

As it happened, school officials – with Title IX enactment less than a year away – were in the process of launching two women’s programs on an intercollegiate basis.

“And they had one swimmer,” Monroe said, “and three other brave souls willing to try it.”

It was a true start-up. The coach, Vangie Parker, was trained in gymnastics. The women worked out in the shallow warm-up pool next to the competition tank where the men swam. They bought their own suits.

“I basically did the workout the boys did,” Monroe recalled, “or figured it out on my own.”

But she figured it out well enough that she qualified for the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women nationals – the NCAA couldn’t be bothered with women’s sports then – that first year. And Parker was enough of a go-getter that when the AIAW was without a host for the 1973 nationals, she volunteered Idaho.

That drew a little more attention to the team on campus and by Monroe’s senior year there were 15 swimmers.

She hadn’t planned to be among them. Married the summer before to Brent Monroe – they’d met on her 18th birthday in Theophilus Tower – she had a schedule full of student teaching, lifeguarding and giving swim lessons on top of school.

Then she heard about the scholarships – Idaho’s next step in Title IX compliance.

“They referred to it as an ‘award,’ ” she said. “There were three qualifications. One was need and that was easy – we had nothing. The second was grades – and I was too guilty to ever miss a class. And third on the list was athletic ability. Imagine that today, being third behind the other two.”

It was also suggested that participating in two sports would enhance her chances of being a recipient (“two for the price of one”). So she played on UI’s first official volleyball team, which went 22-6 that year – and, yes, went to nationals in swimming for a fourth year and did her student teaching and graduated.

Oh, that scholarship? It was worth $175.

“I just couldn’t resist,” she said. “All those years of competing – I wanted to say I was the first one.”

It wouldn’t be the last of the firsts. She and Brent were hired to teach and coach in Kendrick, Idaho, in 1977, and she took the Tigers’ first volleyball teams to six state tournaments. She coached two more state tournament teams in Chelan.

And those humble – and often begrudged – beginnings of women’s sports?

“To be honest, I wasn’t outraged,” she said, “because when you have nothing and start getting little things, you think, ‘That’s great.’ Every little step was something more than it was before. I probably got more appalled at those things as I got older.

“I’m just proud of the very small part I had in the start of it all, and for the unbelievable timing that allowed me to play a part.”

And for that pioneer spirit, which may have played the biggest part of all.

The name isn’t as important as the title for Ron Stone Jr. in quest to be starting “Rush” LB at Washington State      Comment   Translate Page

PULLMAN – Everything considered, it’s a pretty trivial matter. But since Washington State’s redshirt freshman “Rush” linebacker could see some real playing time in the near future, we might as well settle the debate now, if only to make it easier on the broadcasters who’ll be calling his name and the journalists who’ll be printing it.

R.J. Stone or Ron Stone Jr.?

It’s a fair question for the second-year Cougar because the evidence is conflicting: WSU lists “Ron Stone Jr.” on its official roster, but the player’s Twitter handle, “@Rj__Stone” indicates his fanbase – a group that could grow substantially this season – should call him the opposite.

So, the official verdict?

“I mean either/or works,” Stone Jr. said when asked to clear the confusion. “I’ve gone by R.J. my whole life, but kind of like my senior year and once I first got to college is when I’ve taken that step as Ron.”

That prompts the next most obvious question: How did R.J. become Ron?

Once football began to take a more prominent role in Stone’s life, he decided to make the switch, reverting to the birth name he adopted from his father – an ode to his first coach and mentor in the sport.

“I was named after my dad and that’s kind of one of the main reasons I started playing football,” Stone said. “Kind of a tribute to him a little bit and just showing I can do it, too.”

Ron Stone Sr. was a 13-year NFL veteran who had stops in Dallas, New York (Giants), Oakland and San Francisco. An offensive lineman who battled a spate of injuries throughout his career, Stone Sr. made three Pro Bowl appearances, two All-Pro teams and won a pair of Super Bowls – XXVII and XXX – with the Cowboys in the mid-1990s.

The memories are faint, but Stone Jr. still recalls sitting in club-level seats at the Oakland Coliseum and watching the tail end of his father’s pro career. Stone Sr. retired in 2006 after two seasons with the Raiders and kept his family close by in the Bay Area.

“Growing up, I used to go to a couple of his games when he was at the Raiders,” Stone Jr. said. “And a couple of the other teams, I don’t remember as well.”

It was a stop-and-go lifestyle for the Stones hopping from one city to the next, but the time Ron Jr. spent around the game was invaluable. When Ron Sr’s NFL career died down, he coached his son at the Pop Warner level all the way through to high school. Ron Sr. is still the offensive line coach at Valley Christian, where Ron Jr. was an All-Metro first-team selection as a senior and the West Catholic League’s Most Valuable Defensive Lineman.

“It’s kind of developed me as a football player knowing I get my dad as a coach,” said Stone Jr., whose sisters, aptly named Ronna and Ronika, are student-athletes at Oregon. “He went all the way to that top level, so there’s no better coaching you can get from that.”

He may be indifferent to what you call him, but Stone Jr. eventually wants to be known as WSU’s starting “Rush” linebacker. He’s in the thick of a competition with two returning players, Willie Taylor III and Dominick Silvels, who were essentially 1A and 1B at that position last year. So winning a job is no simple task.

Here’s what Stone Jr. thinks it’ll take: “Just effort in the individual drills and one-on-ones. Just winning all your drills. All the things you can do best, doing the best you can do. Just kind of set yourself apart individually.”

Even with vastly more experience than their younger position mate, Silvels and Taylor III know Stone Jr. is making a push – and a strong one – this spring. He had a touch sack in Saturday’s scrimmage and has worked occasionally with the No. 1 defense during Thursday’s 10th spring practice in Pullman.

“He’s competing, it’s all three of us competing right now,” Taylor III said. “We can all play. He’s good, needs to learn more. For me playing last year, I’ve been able to help him out a little bit. It’s been pretty good.”

It’s simple: Stone Jr. wants to make a name for himself at WSU. As long as “Stone Jr.” is the last name on the depth chart, the first name preceding it is unimportant.

“Everyone wants to play. Everyone wants to win, so it’s going to give us all that extra drive because there’s so few of us,” he said. “Two, three, we can all play, but that starting spot’s what everyone’s going for, so it’s really competitive and we’re all looking forward to it.”

First, CONGRATULATIONS to the team and coaches for an outstanding performance throughout the year and at the Frozen Four. . They made believers of the college hockey world. And next year should see an even better finish. UMass's 3 PP goals in 3 minutes were so disheartening to this fan, I was pacing around the house and trying to think of things to do But the Pios pulled themselves together and stopped the bleeding. (Think Barry Melrose was waiting/promoting a goal to make it a 4-1 game. ) UMass coach conceded DU outplayed them in the 2nd and 3rd period. Was surprised he made several comments about the refs. Didn't say they were bad, but certainly implied it. BTW isn't it almost pro forma tor the winning coach to begin comments on the hard fought battle/skilled performance by the opponent ? I must say when UMass offense was swarming either on the PP or 5 on 5 they were frighteningly good. In retrospect maybe DC should have challenged the very obvious, third hit to the head. Could have lost a timeout if denied which could have been more valuable later in the game .I'm sure the refs did not want to eject a 3rd UMass skater. (The NFL Saints would have loved a challenge in their game against the Rams) In 2016 Pios lost in the semis and then in 2017 took the Natty. 2020 loss in semis and then 2020........

Defensive Tackle

Rest that, man. We're gonna need you. [Marc-Grégor Campredon]

What we want to hear: Jeter comp to Hurst or something. Somebody else stepping up at DT. Dwumfour back soon.

What we're hearing: Since last week there was a whole kerfluffle started when Harbaugh said this in his presser:

Just to follow up on Donovan and Dwumfour, are they injuries that could keep them out of the season? When you say serious, what does that mean exactly?

“It could. I’ve always been kind of just… as a coach but also when I played, I put a lot of stock in what a player, how their body feels, how they respond. So that’s the feedback. All indication we’re getting is that they really can’t do much at all. You always hope for the best.”

Are they injuries that require surgery?

“No, no. Donovan’s has been a soft-tissue injury, a groin injury. And Michael had a torn plantar fascia right before the bowl game. You start to worry when injuries linger longer than previously thought or longer than the time it usually takes, but I think nobody knows their body better than the actual person or athlete.”

And Dwumfour got word of some winds and responded on twitter (I'm choosing not to link a player's tweets since I don't want to add fuel to internet dumb). I mentioned all this with DPJ, along with my take:

"I put a lot of stock in what a player thinks" is Harbaughspeak for "It annoys me when players aren't practicing because they're healing even though I've been told it shouldn't." I gather from comments inside the program and from Dwumfour's response on Twitter that both are going to be fine. If Harbaugh's football coach instinct to expect players with minor injuries to practice has been reduced to howling at the moon about it, that too is fine.

Dwumfour was on the field but not practicing.

Rivals' young contributor Andrew Hussey shared that Mazi Smith's name comes up a lot when they talk to coaches and players.

Harbaugh also clarified what he sees in Jeter and what position they're playing:

Donovan Jeter’s our starting 3-tech right now. He continues to be an ascending player. He’s just…he appears hellbent on being the starting defensive tackle…And Carlo Kemp, talked about him before, extremely strong. He’s our starting nose.

Marich dropped a practice buzz($) yesterday that was mostly offense, but we got a few bits on D:

Jeter and Hutch looked very good in one on ones vs OL.

Rivals published some competition drills. Not much you can glean from watching them except Paea was much faster than Mazi Smith in the 58 vs. 58 battle. There wasn't much else to take away from practice, really.

What it means: We finally made it through a week this spring when the Ben Mason talk wasn't being jammed down our throats. That's the best sign yet that we might survive Defensive Tacklegeddon—Mason is a character but also not a guy who's going to last at 3-tech at 260 pounds after moving from fullback. Hey—it'll be fun, don't get me wrong—but you want them comfortable with the guy.

Moving Kemp to nose is…well his pass rush is not going to be as much of a problem as it was at tackle as long as he can stand up—that's a thing to watch in spring. It also gives the easier job to Jeter—whether that translates to better pass rush is The thing to watch. We'll have to watch it all over again in fall to see how Dwumfour fits.

Defensive End

image

Now with more tight end action. [Patrick Barron]

What we want to hear: Big breakout from one of 2017 dudes. Some hype to go with the impressively-sized hominid wearing the Ojabo jersey. Love for Kwity and Aidan. Probably too much to ask that any of these guys can play DT.

What we're hearing: Aidan. Balas dropped an ITF last week($) that was heavy on football recruiting and basketball departures. There was only one bit on the football defense and it seems to be mostly about Aidan Hutchinson:

Some of the best news to emerge starts on the defensive line, where several young players have stepped up. They still need depth (and we told you in the last ITF they would be looking at DT grad transfers after the spring), but Luiji Vilain, Donovan Jeter and Aidan Hutchinson have really answered the call this spring. Hutchinson is the guy many expected to take a huge leap, and he has. He’s much bigger than his father, All-American Chris Hutchinson (early 1990s), but is very similar in one respect: He is relentless, and he never takes a play off. He is bigger and stronger than last year, and many believe he’s got the potential for an All-Big Ten season as a sophomore.

That tracks with Harbaugh's presser:

“Can really say that about the defensive line as well. Aidan Hutchinson is having a great spring. He’s becoming a dominant player. He’s elevated his game. Played in all 13 games as a true freshman and he’s just doing an incredible job.

The presser noted Vilain has "come on" at End, and "Julius Welschof's made a move." Everyone got named, but Ron Johnson's was in context of a soft-tissue injury. When Harbaugh got to Ojabo he riffed:

And David Ojabo, all signs are that, all indications that once he really learns the game and understands that part of it, he’s going to be a tremendous player. Exceptional in terms of heavy hands and being able to knock back an offensive lineman and also has real speed. He was a 100-meter guy in high school. When it all comes together—he’s only had seven practices. Was limited as a football player as a youngster and in high school. Really played one full season in high school but played four other sports during his high school career. I have good things to say about him.

What it means: All systems go for the next generation, sometimes literally. Don Brown has an incredible track record at defensive end—his Boston College recruits are still going to the NFL—and the athletes they brought in, barring injury, all appear to be working out. Hutchinson was pretty good (also pretty freshman) last year, and while there's reason to hype him up this year—he's replacing Rashan Gary—there's also good reason to believe it.

Vilain already second on the depth chart doesn't say anything about his health—he'll be fine or he won't—but probably also means that Welschof/Upshaw aren't yet ready for a lot of snaps. Vilain has to be an "End"—the Winovich position—so if he's backing up Kwity I think that means Kwity Paye is the new weakside guy after playing mostly anchor last year when Gary was out (Hutchinson played End until everyone was out vs. Florida). That's a good sign. Kwity was undersized for Anchor, and Hutchinson was meant to grow into one. I expect when Danna arrives that they'll both be at Anchor, with Kwity and Vilain also at end.

I think they've got something in Ojabo, and wouldn't be surprised if we see him this year in the role Hutchinson played. Newburg is a guy you unpack in a few years, and Upshaw still looks a year of muscle away from competing. One good note on Welschof suggests they've maybe got another player coming on. All that said, Mike Danna arrives in fall, and he, Aidan, and Kwity are probably getting the overwhelming majority of snaps, with Uche and whatnot cutting into what's left. I think we've heard the last of Ron Johnson.

Julius Welschof Luiji Vilain
Taylor Upshaw David Ojabo
Ron Johnson Gabe Newburg

The McGrone photo one more time before our photographers get like a zillion shots of him in spring [Patrick Barron]

What we want to hear: McGrooooooone! And Anthony! Please!

What we're hearing: Very little; Devin Gil missed some practices with illness, and Josh Ross (hamstring strain) and Cam McGrone both sat out the open practice. Harbaugh's linebacker bits:

Now it’s Jordan Anthony along with Cam McGrone. They’re all interchangeable at that Mike/Will position. And Jordan Glasgow, he plays Viper, he plays Mike, he plays Will, he plays ‘em all in there.

Hudson has been fabulous all spring. Khaleke Hudson, having an excellent spring. So is Josh Uche, and Michael Barrett’s doing a really good job as a Viper and a Sam. I’d put him behind Glasgow right now in those areas, but really probably the backup Sam backer right now to Josh Uche. And he’s also, as I said, playing Viper.

They see SAM as a different position from Viper, by the way.

Josh Uche spent the majority of the open practice with the linebackers but joined the defensive line later for some competition drills. I noted at 4:00 in that video that Uche started from a two-point (standing up) stance, whereas all the other DL began from a three-point stance, with the exception of Gabe Newburg in one twist blitz drill.

In Michigan's defense the Viper is the guy usually matched on tight ends, so the pool managed to get a question about the competition in when TE coach Sherrone Moore took the stage:

You mentioned a few guys on defense. What players on that side of the ball have jumped out to you as you’ve been watching things?

“Uche as usual. Khaleke, because we always have to deal with Khaleke. He’s always harassing us, holding [and] grabbing us as we say, but he’s such a physical, fast player. Michael Barrett has done some really good things. Obviously Brad [Hawkins] and Josh [Metellus] and those guys are always solid players, really good players for us. For us in our room, we always have to deal with Khaleke, we always have to deal with Glasgow, so those are the guys that really jump out for us.”

Jordan Glasgow got to talk to the media, and wore his work shirt. The interesting part was holistic: they're fine and aggressive against the run but have to play better when the offense is trying to mess with them.

What it means: I guess everyone's coming along as they can. I would like to have heard more about McGrone and Anthony—they'll be a thing to watch in the spring game tomorrow. Ross and Hudson are starters; Uche is going to have the Uche role, and it seems they're serious about Michael Barrett, who's heir apparent by default at viper for now.

Safety

Nickel is a separate thing. Starter at nickel ain't no. [Barron]

What we want to hear: Skip Metellus unless he's going to be the best safety in the country or something. Tell me about the other starter, and what our plan might be if the true freshman isn't immediately the best safety in the country or something.

What we're hearing: We FINALLY got a defensive backs coach in front of the media this year. So?

[opening formalities]

So after J-

[question about a punt returner]

And safety?

I mean, Josh is playing at an elite level right now. His leadership qualities are unbelievable…sky’s the limit for him. I think he could be one of the best safeties in the country this year. That’s what we’re shooting for.

And after Josh?

[11(!!!) questions about the kickers]
[2 more questions about returners]
[how do you feel about all the coaching changes?]

Hey we saw J'Marick Woods in the bowl game…

"He's controlling his body. I mean, we saw it in December before the bowl game. He's come into this spring ball and he's been lights out to where he had to develop a little bit. We're excited about him. As I said, he's becoming a man, he's taking a stronghold (of the position), he's understanding the defense, he's seeing formations and he's taking to coaching. It's really been awesome."

The other players like it when ol' J'Marick Woods lays the proverbial J'Marick Wood. Jordan Glasgow:

"He can hit harder than I've really ever seen anyone (hit before). He can really put his body out there and lay it all on the line.

Partridge also gave us an update/explanation-type-substance on Brad Hawkins:

“The other guy, too, is Brad Hawkins. Brad played last year because of injuries or whatnot but Brad was a receiver his entire life, so he’s literally going into his third year of ever playing defense, so the sky is the limit and he is shooting for it right now.

they’re all just getting to where they could be and they could still go more but this has been really good for those guys this spring and for our defense to say ‘Wow, Brad has gotten so much better.’ Well, yeah, because he’s going into his third year playing defense so just seeing formations, understanding calls and all that stuff. He’s gonna continue to get better.”

The rest of the interview went back to how he feels about good people who switch sides to evil.

The Marich update added a line that is as precise as it's concise($):

DBs were very physical. Woods made some plays. Dax will compete immediately with safeties for starting spot.

There's also this from the much thicker offense paragraph($):

Sainristil will make instant impact next year - electrifying with the ball and great route runner. Caught slot fade vs Hawkins for a TD and scored on a crossing route where he outran everyone.

Woods was playing free safety with the ones in the Ruiz stiffarm video

And Harbaugh gave us a depth chart:

The nickel position, Brad Hawkins is the starter there. He’s doing an excellent job. He’s also backing up at both safety positions, both the Rover and the Free. Right now Josh Metellus and J’Marick Woods are the two starting safeties. Louis Grodman is backing up Brad and so is Sammy Faustin. Gemon Green, Tyler Cochran are also in the mix along with Quinn Rothman. That’s also been another position of good health for us.”

What it means: First: check on the Metellus hype. Thank you.

Second: the deck is cleared for Daxton Hill.

This is not ideal. Woods is your leader for the other safety. Woods makes some plays but in case you don't know our take on safeties, we'll go for a boring guy who doesn't make mistakes over the assassin every time. Hawkins you could hope for a leap in development since he moved from receiver and then spent a year at Viper. Partridge came around to saying what you want to hear there, but if Hawkins is the dude who's going to let Dax gently slide onto the field with an eye toward a sophomore breakout, I'm rather certain we'd be hearing more.

As much as I'm in the bag for Sweetness Sainristil, he's not the only speedy slot bug in the league even with Ohio State buying up every Parris Campbell-like object in the Midwest. One of those guys busting huge out of a crossing route 1) is the very last thing a Michigan fan wants to be reminded of, and 2) must include a biff by a safety. Also you know how much Michigan went out of its way last year to kill slot fades. It'd be nice if Sweetness was literally the only guy capable of beating Hawkins on a slot fade given how the defense aligns; he probably is not.

Meanwhile, dead silence on the redshirt freshmen. German Green? Sammy Faustin? Bueller? The only thing we've gotten is Jaylen Kelly-Powell's move to cornerback, discussed below.

It's not so dire as defensive tackle. I think you've got a B+ guy in Metellus and some guys in Hawkins and Woods you can play against most opponents but can't get away with versus the elite ones—they both worked in last year so we're not basing this on nothing. It takes awhile to pick up all a safety has to do in this defense, but the rover position (Metellus's last year) can be simplified for a guy with elite athleticism, and that feels like the play, if not for the opener by Big Ten season.

Depth Chart:

Rover Free Safety Nickel
Josh Metellus J'Marick Woods Brad Hawkins
Brad Hawkins Jaylen Kelly-Powell
Luis Grodman Sammy Faustin Quinn Rothman
German Green Tyler Cochran

Cornerback

What we want to hear: Ambry is all grown up. Tell us why you like Gray?

What we're hearing: Ambry Thomas got the "Yep, you're ready to talk to the media" treatment reserved for position group leaders and locked in starters:

"It's just recognizing formations, what route you're gonna see, on the boundary [snaps]. Yeah it's a whole different thing—everyone talks about this mind change, like slow your mind down, like I really see it now."

He also doesn't mind telling you he's one of the fastest guys in NCAA.

Harbaugh reiterated what we all already know about Gray and what I've been trying to tell you about Hunter Reynolds since he got one of the spring scholarships made available by Michigan's NFL departures:

“Yeah, so the corner, it’s been a healthy position for us this spring. With Lavert rehabbing, Vince Gray starting at left corner right now and Ambry Thomas starting at right corner. Hunter Reynolds is backing up along with Jaylen Kelly-Powell. Jaylen Kelly-Powell’s also backing up at the nickel. Myles Sims, Gemon Green have also been in the mix and they’re coming along good so far this spring, so that’s been a good, healthy position for us. Jalen Perry has also worked in and he’s on the depth chart along with Jared Davis and then John Baty, who is a student tryout that’s done a nice job. All indications are that he’s making the football team, so it’s been a good position.

I cheekily read too much into Myles Sims switching to the #46 jersey (Michael Barrett and Josh Uche are both wearing #6 on defense) in my "let's read too much into the roster" article, and then an insider has to go and make that sound actually serious:

image

So…that's a thing to keep an eye on. He's still as thin as a spider—one of the few guys whose Herbertization wasn't clearly evident on the field last Saturday. But also keep this in mind: EVERY player thinks of transferring. Every one I've asked about it at least, and I ask that often. Marlin Jackson was out the door when Carr wouldn't believe him about the fake bottle-throwing incident. Jeremy Gallon didn't bother to come to practice. Bennie Joppru sold his tapes collection to get a bus ticket home. Todd Howard was fed up with the fans always dogging him for not being Charles Woodson. Brandon Williams was fed up with being behind Todd Howard. Jack Weisenberger saw Bump Elliott and Bob Chappuis return from WWII and told Fritz Crisler he's gonna focus on baseball since they obviously don't need another back.

What it means: Ambry seems to have crossed that threshold from talented guy they want to get on the field to star player who uses his ability for incredible feats. On the other hand, he is still clearly far too young and inexperienced to be trusted with facial hair:

image

I've been there, and it's nothing that can't be fixed with a razor blade and time. JKP's move to cornerback is a sign that he won't grow into a safety, and that removes his highest ceiling. I'm very anxious to see if Gray is Brandon Watson 2.0 or just an incredible find. Ditto Hunter Reynolds. Let's see those guys against Tarik before we gauge whether the next generation is a problem. This season still has Lavert and Ambry so it's not a dire immediate thing. It does irk that there isn't a Jourdan/Lavert/David/Ambry after Ambry.

Defensive Tackle is obviously a huge concern because there is no depth and a lot of unknowns, but the rest of the front seven will probably be fine. I think everyone is so spoiled from how good the defense has been the last few years. Paye is a good to great player, and Hutchinson could be in line for a huge leap forward. As for linebacker/viper, Hudson could be an All-American, Ross should be excellent, and I expect we will see the talent of Anthony and McGrone shine through.

Honestly the thing that scares me the most besides DT is what happens if Hill doesnt stay healthy. Corner could be a real weak spot, especially if they do no have a great pass rush.

Is "fine" good enough to beat OSU, PSU, MSU, ND, UW and two CFP opponents? If so great but I have my doubts. I would have thought at this point in Harbaugh's tenure there would be more depth and talent on the roster. That there isn't suggests player development or recruiting isn't good enough, or perhaps both. Guess we'll find out this fall, but my patience as a fan is starting to wear thin after the last two decades.

Pretty sure we had a lot of the same fears about the defense heading into the 2017 season. A lot of “who the hell is this guy,” after we lost 10 of our 11 starters, and our only returning starter was a pretty weak link (McCray, tough in the hole but slowwwww).

I don’t think you can really say much about the talent or depth of this defense yet. We haven’t really seen them play to this point and the guys you HAVE seen, have had an entire offseason of improvement.

I don't see a lot of similarities to 2017 to be honest. In 2017 guys like Winovich, Gary, and Hurst had already played a lot of snaps and all had high 2016 PFF grades. In the secondary Hill and Long were top 100 recruits (and played like it) while Kinnel and Metellus pretty much played like their ranking suggested they would, which everyone agreed was the weak spot of the defense. The only other question mark was at LB but Hudson and Bush answered those in spades at the spring game. In fact I think the general consensus was that Bush was going to be an upgrade from Gedeon and Hudson might be more suited for Viper than Peppers. I hope our defense will be great this year, but the talent down the middle of the defense is flat out average and nowhere near what it was the past few years.

Exactly.  Can we please ban the phrase "we'll be fine"?  "Fine" is 9-3 with a loss to Ohio State and a Citrus/Outback/Alamo Bowl bid.  "Fine" is an off-season filled with excuses and rationalizations and blaming officials.  "Fine" is no division championship, no Big Ten championship and no playoff.  "Fine" is "wait 'til next year".

It sucks typing this but there isn't a lot to get excited about as a whole. Call it a hangover from last year's whole "Revenge Tour" mantra that unceremoniously ended after the 1st quarter of the OSU game but for the first time in Don Brown's tenure at UM, I think we take a small step back on D. Maybe two if the DL and LB groups need time to find some leadership.

Hope they prove me wrong.

I'm not quite as down on the front 7 as most seem to be.

DE-With Paye, Vilain, Hutchinson, Danna, and Uche I believe the play from DE will remain good to great.

DT- staying healthy is obviously the key..Jeter, Kemp and Dwumfor should be solid.. if we can get legitimate depth out of Mazi, Hinton and Mason this group should be good. I have little hope this will be a position of strength, but I don't think it will be the liability people think. How we hold up against truly elite teams will concern me until my eyes are proven wrong though.

LB- Hudson, and Ross have 1st team all conference and a chance at All American potential, I feel Mcgrone and Anthony will have very good seasons, and if we can get an improved version of Gill, this group has the potential to be the strength of the defense. Added depth from Glasgow, Barrett, and Uche is key.

However I am much more concerned with the back of the defense. The OSU/Bama/Clemsons of the world have transitioned to being able to line up 4-5 WR sets with elite speed and talent, until Michigan can line up 4-5 DB's that can match that type of skillset I will be concerned with our ability to truly be elite. Zordich has done an excellent job with our secondary, and we haven't heard much from him yet this spring.. but the depth this year is alarming.

CB- We have who exactly? Hill had an excellent year last year, and Thomas was good in limited action, but we have yet to see him in an extended role. I'm not counting anyone out, but after that we have JKP/Gray/Reynolds/Green brothers? and maybe Sims? Really hoping Zordich drops the ol reverse jinx and comes out and tells us everyone's terrible.

S- I like Metellus's game, he plays fast and seems to always be around the ball. If he cuts down on mistakes and has truly taken the next step I feel good about that position. After that the depth is again shaky at best. Hawkins and Woods have the potential to be good players. I understand how the "boring safety" has worked for us over the years, but taking the step from good (boring) to great safety play might just be what takes this defense over the top. Hopefully that is where Hill comes in, but it is tough to get too excited until we get to see him in game action.

In my eyes the toughest thing to replace this season will be leadership. With Winovich, Gary, Bush, and Long we had legitimate leaders at all levels of the defense. When the going gets tough it is critical to have those leaders to lean on...who will be the guys to fill those type of roles remains to be seen.

i actually think leadership is easier to replace.

bush allowed brown to do so much and leaves as one of their all time greats while the other 3 guys mentioned were productive, big time players on D.

if youre talking about your very best players being great leaders and guys able to take over games, that may be a different story.  but guys like kemp, metellus, uche, ross, hudson, etc, possess some of the traits youre looking for and have experienced enough to help lead the D.

they have some holes at DL and RB which may prove problematic but the biggest issue could be  lack of all american, gameplan altering type players.  they had hurst followed by bush which helped strengthen the D thru the middle and provide every down impact thats tough to account for...i dont see anyone at that level right now.  patterson, collins, people jones could be those game changing types on O...remains to be seen if any emerge on D.  they can still be good without those types, it just never hurts to have them.

every team is different however leadership should be fine.  DL depth, lack of 1st round beasts, etc would be higher on the list of issues.  if they remain healthy brown should still field a fairly tough D though

If we could get Murphy after trading down I will do jumping Jacks. That would be legit! I've kind of been on the receiver wagon, but there are options there later in the draft, so these guys or a TE might be more logical for the puzzle of the draft. Those are the 2 needs that have the biggest cliff, and both should be in range after a trade down. If 2 or 3 of these guys are available and Irv Smith jr. is there, while the receiver run is still going, you've got a pretty ideal set up. It's just going to be a long wait after that first pick. NCB might just be the pick. Officially praying for Byron Murphy, that's a blue chip player IMO, he could really revive our defense. That dude will be a pain in the side of every offensive coordinator in the NFL I guarentee it.

Jeremiah Masoli Earned his way to Fame, and Johnny Manziel Lost His      Comment   Translate Page

Johnny Manziel is well on his way to becoming an afterthought in the football world, while Jeremiah Masoli, a quarterback with a similar past, is entering his prime.

Johnny Manziel's Career

The sad story began at Tivy High School near San Antonio, Texas. Manziel was evidently athletic from the beginning of his high school career, playing wide receiver. Tivy slowly transitioned Manziel to their full-time quarterback and following his senior season, he had recorded over 5,200 yards of total offence and 77 total touchdowns.

The story gets significantly better before becoming significantly worse.

College

In 2012, Johnny Manziel reigned as king of the sporting world. The redshirt freshman quarterback earned numerous awards including first-team All-SEC, consensus All-American, SEC Offensive Player of the Year, Sporting News Player of the Year, Associated Press Player of the year, Manning Award, Davey O’Brien Award and the Heisman Trophy.

Following a freshman season unlike any that the sporting circle had ever witnessed before, the 2013 off-season raised some concerns for Texas A&M. There were accusations that Manziel was signing autographs for money. The accusations resulted in the Aggies which suspending him for the first half of their 2013 season opener.

After another Heisman calibre season in 2013, Manziel elected to enter the NFL draft. Barry Switzer called Manziel out for what he believed him to be, telling the media that he was arrogant.

Professional

Fast forward three years later, and the Cleveland Browns had drafted Manziel and he has since departed from the NFL.

The period of time in which many Manziel followers lost interest was when he was negotiating with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for a potential contract.

Red flags began popping up everywhere. Manziel was reportedly demanding close to league-high salary requests from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, which was unheard of — especially due to his troubled past.

Through his actions, Manziel portrayed he was doing the CFL a favour by travelling up to Canada to play football. Manziel possibly expected NFL dropouts to open up his spot. Before such could happen, the former Browns pivot was introduced to some of the world’s best football players.

Jeremiah Masoli's Career

One of those elite football players was a patient, calm 5’9 quarterback named Jeremiah Masoli. Masoli's spent six CFL seasons on the sidelines, with the exception of a few starting stints in which he shined.

Masoli has a remarkably similar history to Manziel. Masoli was a college standout at Oregon before falling into legal trouble. He then transferred to Ole Miss and played his final collegiate year for the Rebels. Like Manziel, Masoli had a brief shot at the NFL before trying his hand at Canadian football.

The enlightening difference between the two elusive quarterbacks is that Masoli made a mistake and Manziel has a noticeable character flaw.

In 2010, the Birmingham Alumni Club honoured Masoli with their leadership award. He then waited patiently for over half a decade to be the starting quarterback of a professional football franchise. Throughout that period of time, Masoli backed up his supposed repentance by staying out of legal trouble.

Manziel followed his initial apology by wreaking havoc for the Cleveland Browns due to constant partying and legal issues. After he sought help and treatment for his issues, Manziel entered the CFL and convinced commissioner Randy Ambrosie that his repentance was genuine and his sincerity true.

Assumptions without evidence are wrong when they place a person in a negative light, but when there are leads that point to the assumption it is difficult to turn a blind eye.

The CFL banned Manziel because he did not follow the procedures that he had agreed to with Ambrosie. Speculations arose that Manziel broke his covenant purposely in order to become eligible to sign a deal with the United States newest football league, the AAF, which has now stopped operations.

The Last Word

While at Texas A&M, Johnny Manziel caused frustration for his coaching staff. When he played with Cleveland, Manziel further embarrassed an organization in turmoil. And when he resided in Canada, Manziel bolted from a struggling organization that sold out to welcoming him into the organization long-term.

Masoli made a mistake and repented. Manziel has a significant character flaw that has a ripple effect. The CFL should have seen it coming.

Morehouse College Opens Its Doors To Trans Masculine Students       Comment   Translate Page

Morehouse College in Atlanta since 1867 has been the only all male college dedicated to the education of African American men.  It has a long distinguished list of alumni that include the Rev Dr Martin Luther King Jr, Spike Lee,  Samuel L Jackson, ATL Mayor Maynard Jackson, former Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson,  Julian Bond, and NFL referee Jerome Boger just to name a few.

Unfortunately, Morehouse College was on the Princeton Review's dubious list of Top 20 transphobic and homophobic campuses, and had been on it since the 1990's.  Morehouse alums have also been vocal about wanting action taken to remove their school from that list.

I have long complained about the fact that HBCU's need to get busy making their campuses more welcoming to Black TBLGQ students or lose them to PWA's who are way ahead of them in doing so.

Looks like HBCU's are finally waking up to the reality that Black TBLGQ people exist and aren't going away or back in the closet.

Today the Morehouse College Board of Trustees approved a policy that would open its doors to trans masculine students beginning with the Fall 2020 semester.

“In a rapidly changing world that includes a better understanding of gender identity, we’re proud to expand our admissions policy to consider trans men who want to be part of an institution that has produced some of greatest leaders in social justice, politics, business and the arts for more than 150 years,” Terrance Dixon, the college’s vice president of Enrollment Management, said in a statement.
“The ratification of this policy affirms the College’s commitment to develop men with disciplined minds who will lead lives of leadership and service.”

The currently enrolled 2200 students currently matriculating at 'The House' aren't affected by the new Gender Identity Admissions and Matriculation Policy.

Morehouse College President David Thomas took over in January 2018, and stated that he wanted to implement a formal policy covering transgender students.   The policy was developed after 15 months of community engagement that included faculty, staff, students and alumni as the result of a task force created by President Thomas.

Under the new policy, Morehouse's admissions doors are open to all persons who self identify as men, including trans masculine students. Trans women and people who identify as women are not eligible for admission to Morehouse.

If a person transitioned to female while enrolled at Morehouse, they are no longer eligible to study at The House.  Exemption to this rule must be granted by a three person panel appointed by Morehouse's president after an appeal by the affected student.

This policy is long overdue, and is welcome news for the trans community, Morehouse alums and our allies.  It's also a big step in recognizing the fact that Black trans people are Black people, and some of our Black trans masculine folks dream of matriculating at Morehouse College.

They made that dream a reality by approving this policy.

10 WEEKEND THINGS      Comment   Translate Page
1 - PLAYOFFS: With all due respect to Christmas, NFL kickoff, the Fall Classic and singer Andy Williams, THIS is the most wonderful time of year. The snow is gone, the farmers will soon be in the field, flowers are blooming, and we're elbows deep in HOCKEY PLAYOFFS! Unfortunately Southern Saskatchewan is flatter than a skunk on the TransCanada Highway when it comes to hype but Saskatoon, P.A., Melfort and North Battleford are vibrating.

2 - NORTH BATTLEFORD: Brett Wilson, Emile Francis, Reuben Mayes, Wade Belak, Robyn Silvernagle ... these are just a few people who've made NB famous. I always felt like that's a special town and this week I finally got to spend a few days there for public speaking and the SJHL's Canalta Cup championship. I'm in love with it! Their city slogan is "The Past Is Told. Let The Future Unfold". Sound familiar?

3 - CFL: From the outside, things look chaotic at this point in the off-season. The owners walking away from the bargaining table last week during CBA talks looks bad on them, but they don't care. Even if the public sides with the players in what's becoming a nasty dispute (they generally do), the owners eventually always get their way. If the League was interested in saving face, they could've let it be known why they've delayed talks but, again, I don't believe they care how it looks. Never have.

4 - FLIGHT DECK: Meanwhile the sale of the Montreal Alouettes seems to be completely bungled. Eric Lapointe's group was in, but now it's out. This past week a millenial with money whom no one has ever heard of says he'd like to buy the team. Heck - if this is how it goes - then so would I! There's never been any public statement by the Wetenhall family that they want to sell the team in the first place. In fact, they've said just the opposite. What a mess! Eventually this team will be owned by Molson and the Montreal Canadiens and that's best for everybody so let's just do it.

5 - CFL 2.0: Lastly on all of this, it says here that the CFL's venture into Europe is a genius move. Commissioner Randy Ambrosie said he wanted to think beyond our borders and this innovation could grow the game in a massive way. However personnel types are still scratching their heads over how this infusion of European players will go, how the rosters will be impacted, and so on. As one insider surmised via email, "It may be intentional or it may simply be that Mr. Commissioner is flying by the seat of his pants. Or they don't understand the business model". Again, it hasn't been spelled out very well! And as far as confusion goes, teams are back holding minicamps just like they've done since 2013 because apparently that's part of the new CBA. But there's no CBA! Chaos.

6 - BEN VOLIN: It's sad to me that one of the biggest stories coming out of the week is the vitriol spewed towards Boston football reporter Ben Volin because he dared to call the CFL "boring". We know that's wrong, so who cares? What started as an amusing tiff escalated into a nasty war of words and CFL teams, media, players and fans let Volin have it with both barrels. Is this how insecure we are? Commissioner Ambrosie joked during his road trip stop in Regina how boring this year's Super Bowl was. I'm sure the NFL was really offended by that! Get over it.

7 - RICKY YOU'RE SO FINE: Back to more positive news. It was an absolute treat to share the stage in Sedley, SK one week ago with Henry Burris and Ricky Foley. Hank was, as usual, polished and he gave a motivational 45-minute keynote. Foley, meanwhile, was just as good but in a different way. He spoke raw, and let it all hang out. He revealed that he has a standing offer from TSN to be a panelist but he's happy doing what he's doing for the time being (land development in Vancouver and Toronto). I've gotten 100 times closer to the players since leaving my last role. Where do you think I'm getting all the scoops from?

8 - PITTER PATTER: If I give the SJHL an inch, they take a mile. Anything I give, they ask for more and I absolutely love it. While my life unfolds, the SJHL has graciously asked to be a huge part of it and because of that, I have jumped headfirst back into junior hockey culture. On a daily basis I feel like I’m in a Letterkenny episode and it makes me giggle. Would I change it at this point? That's a "hard no".

I’m having a blast following in my Dad’s footsteps and I feel like he’s alive through me.

(With Melfort Mustangs President Jamie Placsko)

9 - STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS: What a start to the NHL postseason! As we sit here today, three good teams surprisingly find themselves in an 0-2 hole including Winnipeg, Tampa and Pittsburgh. Which of them doesn't come back? I'd suggest Pittsburgh for sure, and maybe Winnipeg. But all that's happened for the Lightning is a wake-up call. Unless they fall victim to the dreaded President's Trophy Curse.

10 - RANDOM THOUGHTS: Don't buy that inane line, "You're never in trouble in a series until you lose at home". Really? In a homer series the road team could win all home games and still lose in 7. Whomever came up with that line should be flogged at centre ice. ... I'd like to see a documentary on how Tim Hortons donuts are made and distributed. ... I spend a lot of time in coffee shops. ... The AAF barring players from signing in the CFL is simply doing two things: 1) Upholding current contracts because the league hasn't officially folded and 2) Making players and agents skeptical about the fledgling XFL. Rider GM Jeremy O'Day was right; there was no reason to panic about the Alliance League until they proved themselves and they wound up not even lasting for one season. ... If you're in the Assiniboia area Saturday night, come on down to the Rec Centre where I'll be on stage with Brock Lesnar and Marty McSorley! Get your tickets at Nelson GM. This is going to be epic!

La. churches rebuilding after fires      Comment   Translate Page

Benjamin Watson may have retired from the New Orleans Saints, but these days, he's repping his community in other ways.

The former NFL tight end spread the word about fundraising efforts for the three historically black churches that burned down in Louisiana's St. Landry Parish in recent weeks.

St. Mary Baptist Church in Porte Barre was set on fire March 26, followed by the Greater Union Baptist Church in Opelousas on April 2 and Mount Pleasant Baptist Church on April 4.

Authorities arrested 21-year-old Holden Matthews in connection with the fires.

Watson sent out a tweet with an address and GoFundMe page where people interested in helping the churches rebuild can send donations.

"It is imperative that we show this community and the entire country that these types of acts do not represent who we are. And most importantly as the body of Christ, we suffer along side our brothers and sisters whenever tragedy, persecution or loss happens," Watson wrote on Twitter.

According to the page, the GoFundMe campaign is an initiative of the Seventh District Baptist Association, a group of about 60 Baptist churches in Southwest Louisiana, including the three churches affected by the fires.

"All of your generous donations will be disbursed equally among all three churches for not only rebuilding their sanctuaries, but for the purchase of all necessities lost in the fires, including pews, sound system, musical instruments, etc.," the GoFundMe page reads.

The campaign had raised more than $25,000 as of Saturday evening.

Church leaders were optimistic about rebuilding and were ready to help their communities start healing.

"It started off a dark moment in our lives, but with the rebuilding process you're going to see some things ... that are going to be very bright for our churches," Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Pastor Gerald Toussaint said.

In the meantime, congregants have been attending services in churches nearby.

"Now, my concern is when do we get back to normal," Harry Richard, pastor of Greater Union Baptist Church, told CNN affiliate KLFY. "When do we put our church family back in their home?"

CNN's Christina Maxouris, Samira Said and Josh Campbell contributed to this report.

My Packers Mock Draft 1.0      Comment   Translate Page

After weeks of player profiles and speculation, it is time to unveil my first of three mock drafts leading up to the 2019 NFL Draft which culminates on April 25th at 8 pm.

This mock draft attempts to address most of the needs the Packers roster currently has and takes into account what has unfolded this offseason during the free agent period and offseason workouts.

Without further ado here is my Packers Mock Draft Version 1.0:

Round 1 Pick 12: Ed Oliver, DL, Houston

Round 1 Pick 30: Noah Fant, TE, Iowa

Round 2 Pick 44: Johnathan Abram, Safety, Mississippi St.

Round 2: TRADE!!!

Packers Trade the 75th and 114th pick to Kansas City for the 63rd overall pick.

Round 2 Pick 63: Parris Campbell, WR, Ohio St.

Round 3 Pick 75: Traded to KC

Round 4 Pick 114: Traded to KC

Round 4 Pick 118: Dakota Allen, ILB, Texas Tech

Round 5 Pick 150: T.J Edwards, ILB, Wisconsin

Round 6 Pick 185: Bunchy Stallings, OG, Kentucky

Round 6 Pick 194: Mercole Hardman, WR, Georgia

Round 7 Pick 226: David Long, CB, Michigan

Highlights and Takes:

With this opening mock draft, I tried to spread the draft capital around on both the offense and defense sides of the ball.  When mocking out this draft I am beginning to realize there will not be a scenario in which Gutekunst can fill in every hole in this roster.

This is where the Packers draft strategy comes into play.  Ultimately, I am simulating multiple different draft evaluations and trying to play fortune teller with where prospects will ultimately end up which makes the process problematic.

The first example of this problematic process is the scenario in which Ed Oliver falls to the Packers at 12.  Although the majority of draft experts have Oliver going in the 8-12 range, there are still a few outlying scenarios which have him going as high as 4.  The same can be said for most of the prospects inside the top 50-75.

Highlights:

The Ed Oliver pick would help the Packers in multiple ways.  First, it would pair Oliver with a pair of dominant nose tackles who can get penetration through the A gap which will allow him to make plays stopping the run as well as rushing the passer.

Secondly, drafting Oliver would provide the Packers with insurance should they let Mike Daniels walk at seasons end.

Finally, Oliver would be the perfect player to fit Mike Pettine's system as he can move to multiple positions along the front seven.

Noah Fant at 30 and Parris Campbell at 63:

This offseason has revealed many problems the Packers offense fell into throughout the course of the season.  Despite Aaron Rodgers playing with a sprained ligament in his knee and a fracture in his tibia, the Packers still lacked explosive play for the majority of the season.

With these picks, Gutekunst instantly acquires a tandem of weapons to add to the core of young pass catchers already on the roster.

Fant will be able to stretch the field both inside and outside, providing the Packers with two tall, athletic tight ends for Aaron Rodgers to look for, who will present matchup nightmares for linebackers and safeties.

Campbell's addition will give the Packers another explosive slot receiver who can be a threat in the return game as well as the rushing attack by adding an extra dimension with the use of the jet sweep.  Some evaluators have compared Campbell to a Percy Harvin because of the many ways in which he can impact a game.

Fortifying the Linebacker and Safety Positions:

Finally, this mock draft proposed selecting a safety and multiple inside linebackers to further add to the depth of the defensive side of the ball.  Adding to the safety position is based out of necessity, as the Packers need to provide Adrian Amos with an impact player to play alongside.

The selection of Johnathan Abram would provide the Packers with another player who could control the middle of the field by covering slot receivers and tight ends.

The additions of Dakota Allen and T.J Edwards adds more depth to the middle of the field in 2019.  Both players, along with Oren Burks, would serve in a three-man rotation, at the second inside linebacker position. They would provide the team with a "lunch pail" mentality, a high motor, and have their strengths accentuated by playing alongside Blake Martinez.

Both players abilities will not jump off the screen but they are solid tacklers who do not mind getting their hands dirty.  Edwards and Allen would serve as valuable role players for the Packers at the linebacker position.

Sound Off:

Stay tuned for the next two editions of my mock draft series with my final mock draft coming on Wednesday, April 24.  Let me know how you see the Packers 2019 draft class shaping out.  Do you see any trades, do you like any of the prospects I highlighted? As always, I look forward to the debate and the discussion.

Cory's Corner: Plenty Of Options For Gutekunst       Comment   Translate Page

Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst has plenty of options — which is all you can ask for.

In the next couple weeks, he will likely get plenty of phone calls from other GMs asking him if he would be interested in moving down from the No. 12 pick. The Packers are picking the highest they have ever picked since 2009 and that is why Gutekunst has lots to do decide.

Gutekunst can listen to trades all he wants, because there are plenty of ways this draft could go. He could move down and still get Iowa tight end Noah Fant at 20 while adding two more picks to his arsenal.

This would likely drive a lot of fans nuts because that is the same value play that Ted Thompson has been known for. And I would agree. With how Gutekunst has quickly remade the roster from trading away Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Ty Montgomery to releasing Nick Perry.

This is clearly Gutekunst’s (and to a certain extent, Mark Murphy’s) team now. Both of those guys are trying to build the best roster for right now. That’s the most important part. Neither of those guys need to worry about three or four years out — they need to worry about 2019 because the previous regime never had a deep enough sense of urgency.

Now is the time for the Packers to be the aggressor. They have a real shot to grab three, possibly four, players from Daniel Jeremiah’s Top 50 prospects. The reason why the Packers haven’t been to the playoffs in the last two years is because they just haven’t had the players. The talent level in Green Bay has needed tweaking since the NFC Championship debacle in 2014. Ever since then, the team has regressed and has relied on Aaron Rodgers too much.

Now is the time for the Packers to change that. Is that a lot of pressure for Gutekunst? It certainly is. This is only his second NFL draft from the big boy GM chair, but Murphy also knows that he has risked plenty to get this right. The Packers have two first rounders and six picks in the first four rounds. Murphy knows that if this draft is a bust, plenty of people are going to blame him. It was Murphy that overhauled the front office structure to make himself more autonomous and now if all the player and coaching moves don’t work, Murphy is going to have to answer plenty of questions.

That’s why now is the time more than ever. Granted, Rodgers is 35 and it’s hard to know how long he can play at an optimum level. But, this draft is about getting it right for the sake of the front office. They wanted to do this their way and that’s what they are doing.

They are in a perfect position right now because they have so many options. They could go offense or defense and trade up or down. This is perfect for Gutekunst because he has the leverage. It isn’t a secret that the Patriots want to move up from 32 but all depends what the cost will be. The next two weeks will be a cat and mouse game between GMs that want to gauge the market. The Packers have a real chance to add cornerstones to a team that has been crumbling.

It all depends what options Gutekunst decides to take.

He is giving millions of his own money for the cause he claims to be passionate about. I have no reason to think he's not doing it for the stated reason. Him and the other players protesting in the league made the NFL shed 80M a year(I think this was the number, correct me if I've made a mistake with it) for that and related causes too. You might not think it accomplishes much but this is real money that go to real things in the world. This is just the tangible input he can claim. Him bringing attention and awareness to his cause is more fuzzy as an input because as you have stated it created both positive and negative attention... Although, I'm of the mind that if you are serious about the issue at hand and think that there are problems that need to be addressed you won't be like "I mean... sure, 10% of our population suffers discrimination at the hands of police, the justice system, etc... but damn... he hurt my feelings so much with kneeling during the anthem that now I don't really care about the discrimination, let all those people suffer for all I care... ". To me it's all posture and reinforcing political trenches. "It's not the message it's the tactics" is a very very old way to dismiss a message without engaging with it much. People don't have to like how it's delivered to appreciate the issue it brings attention to.

“The Freedom of Information Act is a critical and sometimes underappreciated tool that allows all of us access to the records of our government.  It was through the act that I obtained copies of more than nine hundred pages of FBI documents related to the Black Legion.  These proved vital.”  -Tom Stanton

In the mid-1930s, Detroit reigned as the City of Champions.  Within a six-month span, the Tigers, Lions, and Red Wings won a World Series, NFL title, and Stanley Cup -- a major-sports trifecta achieved by no other American city before or since -- and it happened as undefeated local boxer Joe Louis was becoming a national sensation.  As the successes mounted, the national media made heroes of the city’s sports stars, and Detroit grew almost delirious, the string of victories providing a sweet diversion from the Great Depression.

But beneath the jubilance, a nefarious plague was spreading unchecked.  A wave of mysterious crimes had police baffled: bodies dumped along roadsides, suspicious suicides, bombings of homes and halls, flogging victims who refused to speak, assassination plots.  All were the work of the Black Legion, a secret terrorist organization that flourished in Detroit until the summer of 1936.

Two males on New Orleans Saints Dance Team are from Vermilion Parish      Comment   Translate Page
One is NV graduate, other is Erath High graduate

As of Friday night, there are now three male dancers and 29 female dancers on the 2019 Saintsation’ New Orleans Dance Team. Did you know that two out of the three males are from Vermilion Parish?
Jesse Hernandez, a North Vermilion graduate, made history last year by being the first male to make the Saints’ Dance Team. He had to try out again this year, and on Friday, he learned that he made the team, again.
Well, because of the success Hernandez had last year, Erath High graduate Dylon Hoffpauir decided to try out. He handled each audition well and on Friday, he also learned that he made the dance team.
“I am so humbled and thankful for the opportunity to cheer on the Saints as a Saintsations,” said Hoffpauir, who is 27 years old. “I feel so lucky to have the opportunity to show young male dancers that anything is possible if you work hard and work tirelessly.”
Hoffpauir, an LSU graduate who was also a male LSU cheerleader, said, because of the success Jesse had last year, it gave him the courage to try out this year.
“Jesse Hernandez was such an inspiration, because he opened the door for all of us male dancers who want to dance at the pro level. I am so excited to see what the year holds for me, and I can’t wait to show the world that dudes dance too,” he said.
“It’s setting a new path, it’s changing the world, and that’s exactly what I want to do, and hopefully I can open that venue and open that path for other male dancers,” Hernandez said last year.
The Saints are one of two teams in the NFL who have male dancers on their cheer-leading team.
LSU’s Manship School gave Dylon a shoutout Friday afternoon.
“We are so excited to share that our own @ManshipDylon made the @Saintsations team.

Indeed, the league becomes more offensive with each passing season.

EA AND RESPAWN ANNOUNCE STAR WARS JEDI: FALLEN ORDERTM WILL LAUNCH NOVEMBER 15, 2019 Play as a Jedi Padawan on the Run After the Events of Star WarsTM: Revenge of the SithTM Australia – April 14, 2019 – During a panel today at Star Wars™ Celebration in Chicago, Respawn Entertainment, a studio of Electronic Arts (NASDAQ:EA), announced that Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order™, a new third-person action adventure game, will launch on November 15, 2019 on Xbox One, PlayStation®4 and PC via Origin™. The game will feature an authentic story set shortly after the events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith ™, when the Jedi have fallen. Fans will play as a young Padawan named Cal Kestis, brought to life by Cameron Monaghan (Shameless, Gotham), who has survived Order 66, the Emperor’s secret decree to eliminate all Jedi. Players must pick up the pieces of Cal’s shattered past to complete his training and master the art of the iconic lightsaber – all while staying one step ahead of the Empire and its deadly Inquisitors. “Many Star Wars fans, ourselves included, are really interested in the dark times, so we wanted to explore that mysterious, dangerous period,” said Stig Asmussen, Game Director, Respawn Entertainment. “The team at Lucasfilm have been amazing collaborators, helping us explore and further develop this part of the timeline where the Empire is at the height of its power and any remaining Jedi are in hiding. Within this narrative, we’ve crafted a game with intense, yet thoughtful and fun melee combat using the lightsaber and Force powers, allowing anyone to fulfill their Jedi fantasy.” “When Respawn approached us with the idea for this game, we were immediately supportive. A single player, story-driven title in the Star Wars universe was exactly what we were looking for, and we know the fans have been eager for one, as well,” said Steve Blank, Director, Franchise Content & Strategy, Lucasfilm Story Group. “Focusing on Cal stepping back into the shoes of a Jedi post Order 66 opens up a lot of gameplay opportunities and rich story threads to develop for this new character and his backstory.” Players will meet Cal on Bracca, a brand-new Star Wars planet and one of several new locations introduced in the game. Cal is hiding from the Empire in plain sight but is forced to go on the run when he exposes his Force powers. Along the way, Cal will make new friends, like his mysterious companion Cere, as well as run into some familiar faces, all while being accompanied by his faithful droid BD-1. Cal’s flight from the Empire is made even more dangerous as he is being pursued by the Second Sister, one of the Empire’s elite Inquisitors, who seeks to hunt Cal down and extinguish this surviving Jedi. Assisting the Second Sister are the terrifying Purge Troopers, special Imperial forces trained to seek out Jedi and aid the Inquisitors in their dastardly work. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is designed with gameplay as a top priority in order to deliver the kind of intense Star Wars lightsaber battles that are seen in the films. Brought to life by Respawn, a studio known for high-quality games that are both visually beautiful and technically masterful, players will use their Jedi training to create different melee combinations with an innovative lightsaber combat system and Force abilities. Players will also use traversal and other platforming abilities to strategically overcome opponents and solve puzzles in their path across this galaxy-spanning adventure. Star Wars fans will recognise iconic locations, weapons, gear, and enemies, while also meeting a roster of fresh characters, locations, creatures, droids and adversaries new to Star Wars. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is available now for pre-order, and will offer fans unique cosmetic content. njmlins, Correct. Launch angles have nothing at all to do with veteran OF's not breaking initially on balls that wind up over their heads but stay in the field. MLB has juiced the ball for more HR's the same way the NFL legalized offensive linemen holding and outlawed DB's from chucking WR's in order to bring offense into their game about 10-12 years ago. On it's way to flag football. That along with the epidemic amount of K's assures that starting pitchers can't last into the 8th inning 95% of the time. Just watched Verlander shut down the Mariners, but he had to leave after 6 innings because he was up to 105 pitches. He had 11 K's and that ran his pitch count up. On it's way to hitting off a tee. Different game. Don't compare stats to what happened in the past. MLB games now come down to the 12th guy in the bullpen that just got called up from AA ball.

Cam Newton, quarterback, Carolina Panthers It quickly became apparent last season that Newton’s throwing shoulder was not right. He struggled to drive the ball downfield, embarrassingly so at times, and was ultimately shut down for the final two weeks before undergoing offseason shoulder surgery. Newton is progressing well in his recovery and will likely be a full go for training camp. Playing with superstar running back Christian McCaffrey, up-and-coming receivers D.J.           Ohio State Offense, Wolverine Defense Likely to Once Again Be Two of the Big Ten's More Formidable Units      Comment   Translate Page

The 2018 season saw the Big Ten's top teams each have its struggles on one particular side of the ball. Ohio State's offense put up prolific numbers but the defense seemed lost at times; especially in the back seven. Don Brown and Michigan's defense were superb up until the Nov. 24 destruction in Columbus, but the Wolverine offense wasn't exactly electric.

In Urban Meyer's final season, the Buckeyes finished No. 2 in the country in total offense behind only the Kyler Murray-led Sooners. Ryan Day's first season as offensive coordinator was back in 2017 and his unit finished No. 7 in America. The Wolverine defense has put up back-to-back stellar seasons, finishing No. 2 in 2018 and No. 3 the previous year.

Both units have undergone substantial changes in the offseason with players declaring for the NFL Draft as well as some coaching moves. Still, the Ohio State offense and Michigan defense should again be two of the Big Ten's top storylines for the 2019 season.

Ryan Day is still evaluating the options at quarterback and that battle is expected to go into the summer. Whether it's Justin Fields or Matthew Baldwin, Ohio State's offense showed flashes of its potential at yesterday's spring scrimmage. Several key pieces were missing along the line and a few playmakers were held out, but guys like Binjimen Victor, Jaelen Gill, and true freshman Garrett Wilson all shined on offense.

By the time the quarterback situation is resolved, the team gets healthy, and Rutgers transfer Jonah Jackson arrives this summer, Day's offense will be closer to its full form. Is it fair to expect similar numbers to last season? Probably not, but there's no shortage of playmakers even with the losses of Parris Campbell, Terry McLaurin, Johnnie Dixon, and Mike Weber.

Justin Fields flashed in Saturday's spring game.
Justin Fields showed flashes during Saturday's spring game despite the no-contact jersey.

Two hundred miles to the north, an entirely different spring scrimmage was taking place yesterday as the Wolverines look to make strides on offense while overcoming the loss of four of the team's top defenders. With Devin Bush, Rashan Gary, Chase Winovich, and David Long all off to the NFL, it's now up to Don Brown and Co. to once again assemble one of the nation's top defenses.

Other than the throttling that took place in Columbus and the loss against Florida in the Peach Bowl, the 2018 campaign was another fine one for the Wolverine defense. Even with the loss of some future first-rounders like Gary and Bush, the expectation is for Brown to put together another fine showing with some newer faces in Ann Arbor.

One of the bigger challenges, however, may be doing so with a new-look defensive staff. Greg Mattison spent nearly a decade in Ann Arbor before making the decision to join Day's staff in Columbus. Linebackers coach Al Washington had been perhaps the best recruiter for the Wolverines, but he too is now at Ohio State. Michigan brought in former Arizona State defensive line coach Shaun Nua and Boston College's Anthony Campanile to help fill the void.

The loss of two key assistants will surely make this year's meeting in Ann Arbor that much more interesting.

Michigan has had a top-10 defense every single year dating back to 2014 and has put together some impressive showings against potent Ohio State offenses; even in defeat. And while replacing several starters on defense is a concern, the team's old-school offensive scheme really seems to be the bigger burden.

The Wolverine defense is now expected to be led by players like cornerback Lavert Hill, linebacker Josh Ross, viper Khaleke Hudson, and pass rusher Kwity Paye. One of the more interesting things to watch for will be how Brown elects to utilize five-star signee Daxton Hill in the secondary.

Plenty of other Big Ten programs are poised to make some noise on either side of the ball. Purdue and Nebraska's offenses both look to be solid for the coming years and last season the Buckeyes got a taste of just what the Boilermakers can do. The same can be said for a Wisconsin defense that'll look to improve on its 2018 play as well as a young Nittany Lion squad.

The spring practice schedules are now behind us, but there's still a lot to unfold before the season kicks off here in a little over four months. Position battles will wage on, the strength & conditioning programs will be in full force, and the rest of the 2019 signees will arrive this summer to fight for playing time of their own.

Still, even with a number of departures and personnel changes, Ohio State's offense and Michigan's defense may very well be kings of the conference once again in 2019. And it could set up for one heck of a battle on Nov. 30th in Ann Arbor.

Ohio State's Spring Game Recruiting Spectacle, Former Player Reunion Goes On Uninterrupted Without Urban Meyer      Comment   Translate Page
Dwayne Haskins knew exactly what he was doing.

At 10:47 a.m. on Saturday, he entered Ohio Stadium for the spring game through the exact same gates he walked though 364 days before. But instead of the cut-off scarlet sweatshirt, headband, headphones around his ears, backpack and rolled-up gray football pants with pads underneath he wore last year, Haskins rocked a black sweatshirt with black sweatpants and a watch befitting of a fashion-conscious, soon-to-be first-round NFL quarterback. And rather than swing his knee brace around in his right hand as he headed toward the locker room, he had his right arm draped around Justin Fields.

Photographers snapped photos of the quarterback duo. Reporters captured videos of them smiling and chatting as they walked into the stadium together.

A complete and total spectacle. Exactly what Ryan Day hoped. And things were just getting ramped up.

Even with Urban Meyer nowhere to be found, Ohio State managed to turn the spring game into what at times early in the afternoon felt like more a recruiting extravaganza and former player reunion than an actual football game. A seemingly endless supply of high-school prospects surrounded the field with dozens of NFL players.

Maximizing brand awareness is as important of a task as anything for a college football head coach at a powerhouse program. While everything on the field on Saturday was aimed at preparing the Buckeyes for the 2019 season, what was happening around it served to put the program in an advantageous position moving forward.

The tunnel in the south-east corner of Ohio Stadium served as a de facto red carpet of the stars – or, effectively, the four-stars and five-stars.

First came a trio of 2020 commits: five-star offensive tackle Paris Johnson Jr., four-star cornerback Lejond Cavazos and four-star quarterback Jack Miller.

Johnson, the No. 4 overall prospect in his class, has worried Ohio State fans recently, taking a tour of the SEC complete with visits to Tennessee, Alabama, LSU and Georgia. But ever the showman, the towering lineman descended down the tunnel with Miller – the team’s quarterback of the future – and Cavazos, who committed to the Buckeyes for a second time on Friday evening.

Johnson has seemingly flirted with decommitting from Ohio State due to Meyer’s retirement, but he remains in the eight-player 2020 class. Miller, whose dad is friends with Meyer, committed to play for the Buckeyes in part due to the now-retired head coach, yet he remains in the class. Cavazos actually did decommit when Meyer announced his impending retirement, but Day helped bring him back into the fold.

Meyer wasn’t at Ohio Stadium on Saturday. But those three prospects were, and they opened the floodgates.

Cade Stover, a four-star linebacker signee from Lexington, made an appearance along with 2020 commit Jakob James, a three-star tackle from Cincinnati. Trey Leroux, a three-star tackle from Norwalk, took the walk into the stadium.

Darrion Henry, an uncommitted four-star defensive end from Cincinnati, ventured down the tunnel 10 minutes after Johnson, a fellow Cincinnatian, arrived.

More and more kept coming.

Five-star 2021 defensive end commit Jack Sawyer. Four-star 2021 defensive end target Najee Story. Four-star 2021 quarterback target Kyle McCord. Four-star 2020 wide receiver target LV Bunkley-Shelton. Four-star 2020 wide receiver target Marvin Harrison Jr. Four-star 2020 wide receiver commit Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Four-star 2021 offensive tackle target Donovan Jackson. Four-star 2021 wide receiver target Jayden Ballard. Five-star 2019 center signee Harry Miller. Four-star 2021 linebacker target Yanni Karlaftis. Four-star 2021 linebacker target Reid Carrico, who received an offer from the Buckeyes on Saturday before the spring game.

And that’s just a taste of the procession of prospects. They littered the field before the game.

Darrion Henry

Sawyer and Henry stood on the grass to watch the defensive linemen warm up. Stover chatted up Sam Hubbard. Jack Miller walked onto the field with Haskins to stand with Justin Fields and Matthew Baldwin as they warmed up.

All of them made the trip to Columbus to see the Buckeyes play their first game of the Day era, so Ohio State made sure they got a taste of star power by hosting as many former players as possible.

During a timeout in the first half, a group of players from last year's team – Haskins, Dre'Mont Jones, Johnnie Dixon, Michael Jordan, Mike Weber, Terry McLaurin, Isaiah Prince and a few others – walked out to midfield to receive their part-Big Ten championship, part-Rose Bowl rings.

Braxton Miller, Ezekiel Elliott, Curtis Samuel, Malik Hooker, Ted Ginn Jr. and Michael Thomas brought the allure. A pair of recent first-round NFL draft picks – Marshon Lattimore and Denzel Ward – were accompanied by Pat Elflein, a former Rimington Trophy winner. Bobby Carpenter worked as Big Ten Network's sideline reporter, and Eddie George was the honorary team captain.

The Buckeyes might have had enough former players in attendance to consist of a full team, but they weren't there to take part in the game. Ohio State wanted them in Columbus to recruit, for their presence alone attracts future talent that hopes to be the next version of the pros.

"Mike Thomas came into my office yesterday and had a recruit in there, and he spent 15-20 minutes with us just talking about what that means and the NFL and the brotherhood that they have of Ohio State Buckeyes in the NFL, and then those guys coming back and supporting the guys who are here right now," Day said. "It's a special group. You can see it. When you go around, you go from guy to guy. It's not just former Buckeyes. It's NFL greats. It's former Buckeye great and All-Americans, all-conference players. It's just remarkable when you get around those guys, the excellence that you're around."

Before the game even finished, photos of recruits posing with former Ohio State players began to trickle out onto social media.

Meyer understood the recruiting game. Everything, including the spring game, became a recruiting showcase. Anything to get prospects interested while building the Ohio State football brand and either winning or preparing to win games.

Day followed Meyer's lead on Saturday. He invited former Buckeyes and top recruits to watch the current team, a formula with proven success.

Winning, ultimately, will determine where the program ends up. But in combining past, present and future, Day did what he could to make Ohio State a desirable program in his first game, even if it was just an exhibition.

They've already released the preseason, as well as listing who teams will play in regular season. Fans know who are in their Division that they will play twice, so it's not that big of a deal figuring out the order. It can only benefit teams and franchises looking to sell tickets...the timing of the release is based on how it would best benefit ticket sales. No big intrigue for season ticket holders, it is what it is, just like the draft... Actually, this is a dumb headline as the schedule always comes after the draft eventually!

Packers 2019 Draft: 3 Michigan Defenders that Make Sense in Green Bay       Comment   Translate Page

When it comes to the 2019 NFL draft, the Green Bay Packers are in an incredibly strong position. For one, the team owns three of the top-44 picks and what makes that even better is that none of those picks need to be used on a quarterback.

The Packers, despite their 6-9-1 record and 13 wins over the last two seasons, aren't a massive rebuilding project. Sure, lots of changes have been made but the Packers still have Aaron Rodgers, Davante Adams, David Bakhtiari, Bryan Bulaga, a pair of solid backs and an aging Jimmy Graham, as well as young up-and-comers at wide receiver.

There is talent there and some talent on defense too. They key is finding more impact players on both sides of the ball. Whether that comes at linebacker, receiver, running back, defenisve tackle -- wherever.

It doesn't matter per se what position the guy plays as long as he becomes one of the best players on the team. That's what the Packers need out of the 12th pick of the NFL draft, especially since is their highest selection since 2009.

During that draft, Ted Thompson hit on B.J. Raji, Clay Matthews and T. J. Lang. Soon after, each would help the team win a Super Bowl and all three were fixtures in the lineup.

Three starters in any draft is good, but three of that quality is rare. Not to mention getting a guy like Brad Jones. Injuries robbed Raji of a lot but in 2010, he was dominant. Matthews was an All-Pro.

The immedidate impact of those players helped transform the Packers defense and less than two years after making that pair of first-round picks, the Packers were Super Bowl champions.

The odds are long of that happening again, but history could repeat itself. The key is getting Aaron Rodgers right and then the next thing, is being right on these three criticial draft picks.

The Packers should be able to get three quality football players with those selections and if they nab three starters like they did in 2009, all three of which were eventually Pro Bowlers, then the turnaround doesn't have to take so long.

And when looking at those picks, it came across my mind that three Michigan football players seem to fit perfeclty in Green Bay with three chances to realistically take one of them.

I am not suggesting all three come to the Packers. That just seems foolish and improbable. However, Rashan Gary, Devin Bush and Chase Winovich all fit in Green Bay in their own way and here's a breakdown of why the Packers should draft them and at what pick they could go.

Rashan Gary, DE -

When it comes to Gary, it doesn't really matter who you talk to, the 6-foot-5, 300 pound defensive end is a top-10 pick and he should be.

The biggets knock against him is a lack of college production. The former No. 1 overall recruit had 10.5 career sacks and earned All-Big Ten honors as a sophomore and junior.

While he didn't get as many sacks as you might expect from a guy that big, who runs the 40-yard dash is 4.58, but he was constantly being double and triple teamed and sometimes in colleges, spread offenses make sacks harder to come by.

In terms of run defense, he's elite and he would have no trouble being a force in the run game right away. With the Packers, he could fit in a lot of ways.

Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine likes to use multiple fronts and Gary can play 3-4 defensive end, 4-3 defensive end and even defensive tackle. He's not really a nose but in pass rush situatuoins, he can play inside.

Maybe my best comparsions is that he has the athleticism of Julius Peppers in the body of Michael Strahan. In the right scheme, with the right coaches, he will be a building block.

His stats may never be eye-popping but if he somehow fell to the Packers at 12, they shouldn't hesitate to select him. A front with Kenny Clary, Mike Daniels and Rashan Gary would be fightening. It would also give the Packers the long-term flexibility to play an odd or even front. And on top of all that, Green Bay would get one of the best pass rushers in the draft.

It probably won't happen because I doubt he falls that far, but it he does, thank your lucky stars because he would be ideal as a Green Bay Packer.

Devin Bush --

When it comes to Gary, being able to select him is either going to require a slide or dip in his draft stock or the Packers to trade up.

However, when it comes to another Michigan defender, Devin Bush, the Packers could likely draft him at 12 or potentially at 30 if things go their way.

With the development of Blake Martinez the past two seasons, the need at inside linebacker might not seem as great. But as good as Martinez has been, there is a gaping hole next to him and Green Bay desperately needs an athletic, three-down linebacker.

Bush is slightly undersized at 5-foot-11, 228 pounds, yet he made up for it by running a 4.43 in the 40. He was Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year last season and finished with career with `172 spots, 18.5 TFL, 10 sacks and 11 pass breakups.

The early entrant is physical in the run game and will be able to help shore up the run defense. He also doesn't need to come off the field. He can cover backs and tight ends, even receivers in zone, even if that's out of his comfort zone a little.

Bush is also a guy that could play a 4-3 or a 3-4. He is also tremendous pressuring the quarterback with all 10 of those sacks coming the last two seasons. And there is no doubt, tackling has been a weakness in Green Bay for years and Bush could shore that up. He also would bring an attitude of toughness to the Packers. No. 12 is probably too early but if he falls to No, 30 -- he's a no-brainder. He's also someone to consider trading up for.

Chase Winovich --

Some Packers followers might not see pass rush as a huge need after signing Zadarius Smith and Preston Smith in free ageny. But I'd caution people that free agents don't always work out like they are supposed to.

The Smiths could come to Green Bay and post between 15-20 sacks. I hope that happens. It could transform the defense, along with Kyler Fackrell into a top-10 unit, one that could help win the NFC North.

Aaron Rodgers getting back to form and a top-10 defense is probably what this team needs to be a legit playoff contender and to guard against not enough pass rush, Chase Winovich could be a solid second-round option.

Winovich is a 6-foot-3, 255-pound defensive end/outside linebacker that has a constant motor and finished his Michigan career with 43 tackles for loss and 18.5 sacks.

At one point, Winovich played tight end and linebacker, so his 4.59 time in the 40 shouldn't surprise anyone. He may not be quite as athletic as Clay Matthews but he's close and he feels like a perfect fit for the Packers.

Even if both Smiths work out and Fackrell has another good year, can Green Bay afford to pay Fackrell that kind of money he might want?

That's a good question, but if Winovich could develop into a productive edge rusher with starting potential, Fackrell could walk if the price tag got too high.

Among pure edge rushers, Winovich is one of the best in this draft and he seems like he could easily be had at the 44th pick.

On top of his pash rush skills though, he's exceptional against the run and would have no issue setting the edge as a 3-4 OLB or a 4-3 end, even if he's on the light side.

Again, Winovich is a versatile defender that can do multiple things. He can defend the run, pressure the quarterback, play with his hand down and also stand up as a linebacker.

Some analysts have him projected to round 3. Yet, with his pass-rush skills and motor to succeed, I see him as a top-50 player and at No. 44, the Packers could do a lot worse.

The Ice Bowl 50-year Anniversary

It would have been a great game if it had been played on a sweltering September afternoon or on a crisp autumn day in November or even indoors, if there were domed football stadiums in 1967.That year, the NFL Championship Game pitted Vince Lombardi’s proud but aging Green Bay Packers, seeking an unprecedented third consecutive title, against Tom Landry’s Dallas Cowboys, an ascending team out for revenge after losing narrowly to the Packers in the ’66 championship game.

What Offensive Linemen Are Worth it at 12      Comment   Translate Page

The Packers offensive line already looks better than it did a season ago with the addition of Billy Turner and arrival of last year’s fifth-round pick Cole Madison. Both will be immediate upgrades over Byron Bell and Justin McCray.

Turner offers a versatile skill set with the ability to play both guard and tackle. Seemingly, he will be the front-runner to start at right guard come training camp considering Green Bay handed him a decent deal of four-years, $28 million.

Also, Madison’s arrival last Monday was a pleasant surprise. The former right tackle out of Washington State sat out last season coping with the death of a former teammate and close friend. Coaches and team personnel evaluators were high on Madison because of his athleticism and ability to play tackle and guard. When he left, Green Bay had to scramble and ended up signing Bell who went on to play 12 games in 2018, starting nine. As we now know, disaster ensued.

Keeping Aaron Rodgers healthy is a top priority and his risk of injury only heightens as he gets older. Last year was a good example of how not to do it as he was a victim of 49 sacks. The Packers had a revolving door along the right side of the line with injuries to Bryan Bulaga and unstable play at guard. The result was Rodgers playing the entire year on a sprained knee and broken leg.

This team can’t afford a repeat of the 2018 offense if they expect better results this year. Quite frankly, last year’s performance was as bad as it’s ever been under Rodgers. A culmination of poor offensive line play, inexperienced receivers, and a broken system led them to only six wins. Unfortunately for first-year coach Matt LaFleur, the idea of a rebuilding year doesn’t exist in Green Bay. As it shouldn’t with a quarterback like Rodgers.

If the Packers want to get back to the playoffs next season, it will start up front and Green Bay shouldn’t be done adding to their group of offensive linemen. In less than two weeks, general manager Brian Gutekunst will be on the clock with two first-round selections. Yes, taking an offensive lineman in the first goes against the Packers mantra. However, they face enough uncertainty along the line that nothing can be ruled out. For the moment, right guard is still a question mark and Bulaga has only played two full years in his eight NFL seasons. Couple that with the fact that the 30-year-old tackle is entering the final year of his contract.

Using the 12thoverall pick on an offensive lineman would send shockwaves through the fanbase but fans should prepare themselves now for the unexpected. After all, it’s a new era in Green Bay.

Here are three lineman prospects that might warrant a top-12 pick:

Jonah Williams, Alabama

A three-year starter for the Crimson Tide, Williams probably has the best technique and fundamentals in the class. He started all 44 games of his college career with 29 at left tackle and 15 at right. Williams might be the safest bet among offensive lineman prospect due to his size, lateral quickness, and functional play strength. His main knock is that some scouts project him to move to guard in the NFL because of his smaller frame and shorter arm length. Feel free to consider that a negative trait because in Williams a team will get a guy that can potentially start at three different positions and would be rock solid at all three. Him falling to 12 could be a blessing in disguise as the Packers might be able to grab a 10-year starter.

Jawaan Taylor, Florida

Taylor is generating so much buzz, it would come as a complete shock for him to fall out of the top 10. However, this is the one of the most unpredictable events in sports we’re talking about in the NFL draft. Taylor started 33 games at right tackle with a few sprinkled in on the left. He’s the true definition of a dancing bear standing at 6-5 310 pounds with feet as a nimble as a ballerina’s. Taylor helped Florida’s offensive line surrender only 18 sacks in 2018. His longs arms and powerful punch at the point of attack has scouts drooling over his upside. Expect Taylor to be starting in the league for a long time and probably the first lineman off the board come April 25th. If he is still around when the Packers are on the clock at 12, you would be hard pressed to argue against him as the best player available.

Cody Ford, Oklahoma

Even though he started all 14 games at right tackle last year, Ford is a guard through and through. This is where things start to get grey as his stock best projects somewhere in the late teens of the first. However, if he goes only a few picks after 12 then it’s hard to call it a reach. His biggest concern is inexperience with only one season as a full-time starter. On the other hand, scouts believe he has a high ceiling and a bright future as an NFL guard. Ford is a massive prospect that possesses an even-cut frame and nasty strength to finish as a blocker. His feet tend to get him into trouble which is why he will likely move to guard. This isn’t a knock on his abilities, though, as he still has the tools to develop into a productive interior lineman on the next level.
