Excerpted from John Hussman's Weekly Market Comment,

There are three principal phases of a bull market: the first is represented by reviving confidence in the future of business; the second is the response of stock prices to the known improvement in corporate earnings, and the third is the period when speculation is rampant – a period when stocks are advanced on hopes and expectations.

There are three principal phases of a bear market: the first represents the abandonment of the hopes upon which stocks were purchased at inflated prices; the second reflects selling due to decreased business and earnings, and the third is caused by distress selling of sound securities, regardless of their value, by those who must find a cash market for at least a portion of their assets.
– Robert Rhea, The Dow Theory, 1932

Charles Dow once wrote, “To know values is to know the meaning of the market.” That quote may surprise trend-followers and adherents of technical analysis, because Dow’s work is often squeezed into a caricature focusing on nothing more than confirmation and divergence across the Dow Jones Industrial and Transportation averages. But Dow’s actual views, best elaborated by writers like Robert Rhea and William Peter Hamilton, were actually about something much more fundamental: identifying the position of the market in its complete bull-bear cycle. That’s a concept that investors have forgotten, encouraged by the illusion that the Federal Reserve’s buying of Treasury bonds is capable of saving the world from any form of discomfort. That illusion is likely to prove costly.

Probably the most useful exercise we can do at present is to examine where the markets and the U.S. economy are in their respective cycles – with 19 charts and detailed analysis.

The recent bull market clocked in as the longest in history. Even if the September 20, 2018 peak in the S&P 500 was the final high, the preceding advance outlived the 1990-2000 bull market by nearly 8 weeks. Likewise, the current economic expansion is just 3 months shy of the record 10-year expansion that ended in early 2001, the unemployment rate is down to just 3.8%, the entire post-crisis gap between actual real GDP and the CBO estimate of potential real GDP has been eliminated, and the expansion has already outlived the previous runner-up, which ran from 1961 to the end of 1969.

Meanwhile, based on the valuation measures we find best-correlated with actual subsequent market returns across history, the current market extreme already matches or exceeds those of the 1929 and 2000 peaks. There’s little question that the market is long into what Rhea described as the final phase of the bull market; “the period when speculation is rampant – a period when stocks are advanced on hopes and expectations.”

As I’ll detail below, the economic expansion we’ve observed since the 2009 economic low has been a rather standard mean-reverting recovery, with a trajectory no different than could have been projected on the basis of wholly non-monetary variables. The primary effect of extraordinary monetary policy wasn’t to drive real economic gains, but instead to amplify speculation and contribute to wealth and income disparities. Wages and salaries as a share of GDP are clawing higher from the historic low set in 2011, but have only begun to erode the elevated profit margins on which Wall Street is basing its permanent hopes and expectations.

Aside from historic extremes in the valuation measures best correlated with actual subsequent market returns, one measure of these hopes and expectations is that in 2018, according to the Financial Times, 81% of U.S. companies that went public reported losses in the 12 months before their initial public offerings, matching the high-water mark set at the height of the dotcom bubble (h/t Hadi Taheri). It’s the same kind of spectacle that Rhea described nearly a century ago, when he wrote:

“Worthless equities were being sky-rocketed without regard for intrinsic worth or earning power. The whole country appeared insane on the subject of stock speculation. Veteran traders look back at those months and wonder how they could have become so inoculated with the ‘new era’ views as to have been caught in the inevitable crash. Bankers whose good sense might have saved the situation, had speculators listened to them, were shouted down as deconstructionists, while other bankers, whose names will go down in history as ‘racketeers,’ were praised as supermen.”

Still, while it was important to Dow, Rhea, and Hamilton to understand valuations, and to recognize the position of the market in the cycle, they were also carefully focused on the behavior of prices, particularly the uniformity of behavior between their primary indices of interest – the Dow Industrials and Transports. While our own measures of market internals focus on the uniformity of a much broader set of securities, it’s enormously instructive to consider several critical features of market behavior that they understood even a century ago.

  • First, market fluctuations exhibit cycles that move between periods of extreme optimism and periods of profound despair.

  • Second, the extremes of each cycle are characterized by unusually elevated or depressed valuations, and these valuations comprise the true “meaning” of the market for investors.

  • Third, the speculative pressure toward higher prices, and the downward pressure toward lower prices, can be largely gauged by the “uniformity” of behavior across various groups of securities.

  • Fourth, it is enough to identify prevailing conditions and respond to them as they change, without any need to predict the extent or duration of a subsequent market movement.

Consider the situation in mid-1929, when, as the market pushed to obscenely rich valuations, Hamilton acknowledged the uniform behavior of the Dow averages, while also carefully placing the advance in a full-cycle context. That uniformity suggested that investors had taken the speculative bit in their teeth, despite the fact that the bull market, in hindsight, would reach its peak only a few weeks later.

“It goes without saying that the stock market, which has advanced with merely secondary reactions for five years and eight months, is almost necessarily in the third or last stage of such a movement, where stocks do not carry themselves on the dividend return, for the most part, and where sanguine expectations of the future exercise a greater influence than immediate results. All that the averages say when they give such a bull point as that of June 29 [when the Dow averages breached their previous May highs] is that stocks are due for a further advance. They do not predict the extent of that advance.”

The 1929 peak occurred on September 3rd of that year, followed immediately by a steep, waterfall decline. Hamilton’s confirmation of a “turn in the tide” was published the next month, on October 25, 1929, the Friday before Black Monday. By then, the Dow was already 20% off its high (that’s what safety nets and tail-risk hedges are for). The Dow would lose an additional 86% before setting its final low in 1932.

We presently have a financially disfigured economic expansion that’s three months shy of the longest in history, where the unemployment rate is down to 3.8%, and the most reliable measures of stock market valuation again rival the hypervalued extremes of 1929 and 2000. In this context, to call for an immediate 50 basis point rate cut and a resumption of quantitative easing from the Fed seems a frantic strategy to keep a hypervalued market and two-tiered economic “prosperity” in suspended animation.

In a hypervalued market, we do not need to embrace market risk as a result of speculative pressures, but we have to defer an overtly bearish investment outlook on immediate market direction. All of this effort to jam the speculative bit back into the horse’s teeth requires us to adopt a rather neutral outlook here, until we observe fresh deterioration in market internals. Given the late-stage condition of the financial markets and the economy, my sense is that, as in 1929, they may just run this poor horse straight up and over the cliff.

We’ll respond to shifts in valuations and market action as they emerge, so forecasts aren’t actually necessary. Still, full-cycle risks have a way of emerging in ways that investors wholly rule out at market peaks. Glorious half-cycle market advances leave investors vulnerable to catastrophe, because investors hold contempt for anyone who suggests there may be a cliff on the other side of the mountain.

Still, recall that I openly anticipated the 2000-2002 collapse (which wiped out the entire total return of the S&P 500 – over and above T-bill returns – all the way back to May 1996), estimated an -83% loss in tech stocks at their March 2000 peak (which rather improbably matched the actual loss of the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100), and, after a constructive shift in early 2003, projected the 2007-2009 collapse (which wiped out the entire total return of both preceding bubbles – over and above T-bill returns – all the way back to June 1995). The distressing thing is that, from a historical perspective, all of those losses were rather run-of-the-mill cycle completions.

Understanding potential downside risk at a market extreme has a way of concentrating the mind. If I were to offer a guess, I’d suggest that regardless of whether the S&P 500 registers fresh near-term highs, investors should allow for the S&P 500 to be perhaps -30% lower by the end of 2019, on the way to losing an additional -50% of its remaining value over the rest of the down-cycle. That, after all, is how a market loses -65% of its paper value. That’s not so much a forecast as a base case. A -65% loss, unfortunately, would presently represent a run-of-the-mill cycle completion from current valuation extremes. As I observed at the 2000 peak, “If you understand valuations and market history, you know we’re not joking.”

... the investors at greatest risk in the coming years will likely be those who take solace from Fed easing in environments where valuations are extreme yet investors are inclined toward risk-aversion. It will be necessary to refrain from too negative an outlook when overvaluation is joined by speculative psychology, and also to refrain from too aggressive an outlook when reasonable valuations are still joined by extreme risk-aversion. In any event, I expect that responding systematically to valuations and market action, particularly the condition of market internals, will be sufficient to navigate whatever policy makers throw at the markets.

Upungufu Wa Nguvu Za Kiume Unaotokana Na Kisukari (Diabetic Nephropathy)       Comment   Translate Page

Simu:   0763172670/ 0715172670

Inhibition of Marfan Syndrome Aortic Root Dilation by Losartan: Role of Angiotensin II Receptor Type 1-Independent Activation of Endothelial Function.

Am J Pathol. 2018 03;188(3):574-585

Authors: Sellers SL, Milad N, Chan R, Mielnik M, Jermilova U, Huang PL, de Crom R, Hirota JA, Hogg JC, Sandor GG, Van Breemen C, Esfandiarei M, Seidman MA, Bernatchez P

Marfan syndrome (MFS) is a genetic disorder that frequently leads to aortic root dissection and aneurysm. Despite promising preclinical and pilot clinical data, a recent large-scale study using antihypertensive angiotensin II (AngII) receptor type 1 (ATR1) blocker losartan has failed to meet expectations at preventing MFS-associated aortic root dilation, casting doubts about optimal therapy. To study the deleterious role of normal ATR1 signaling in aortic root widening, we generated MFS mice lacking ATR1a expression in an attempt to preserve protective ATR2 signaling. Despite being hypotensive and resistant to AngII vasopressor effects, MFS/ATR1a-null mice showed unabated aortic root enlargement and remained fully responsive to losartan, confirming that blood pressure lowering is of minor therapeutic value in MFS and that losartan's antiremodeling properties may be ATR1 independent. Having shown that MFS causes endothelial dysfunction and that losartan can activate endothelial function in mice and patients, we found that nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibition renders losartan therapeutically inactive, whereas multiple transgenic and pharmacologic models of endothelial NOS activation block aortic root dilation by correcting extracellular signal-regulated kinase signaling. In vitro, losartan can increase endothelial NO release in the absence of AngII and correct MFS NO levels in vivo. Our data suggest that increased protective endothelial function, rather than ATR1 inhibition or blood pressure lowering, might be of therapeutic significance in preventing aortic root disease in MFS.

Alterations of Ocular Hemodynamics Impair Ophthalmic Vascular and Neuroretinal Function.

Am J Pathol. 2018 03;188(3):818-827

Authors: Tsai SH, Xie W, Zhao M, Rosa RH, Hein TW, Kuo L

Hypertension is associated with numerous diseases, but its direct impact on the ocular circulation and neuroretinal function remains unclear. Herein, mouse eyes were challenged with different levels of hemodynamic insult via transverse aortic coarctation, which increased blood pressure and flow velocity by 50% and 40%, respectively, in the right common carotid artery, and reduced those parameters by 30% and 40%, respectively, in the left common carotid artery. Blood velocity in the right central retinal artery gradually increased up to 40% at 4 weeks of transverse aortic coarctation, and the velocity in the left central retinal artery gradually decreased by 20%. The fundus and retinal architecture were unaltered by hemodynamic changes. Endothelium-dependent vasodilations to acetylcholine and adenosine were reduced only in right (hypertensive) ophthalmic arteries. Increased cellularity in the nerve fiber/ganglion cell layers, enhanced glial fibrillary acidic protein expression, and elevated superoxide level were found only in hypertensive retinas. The electroretinogram showed decreased scotopic b-waves in the hypertensive eyes and decreased scotopic oscillatory potentials in both hypertensive and hypotensive eyes. In conclusion, hypertension sustained for 4 weeks causes ophthalmic vascular dysfunction, retinal glial cell activation, oxidative stress, and neuroretinal impairment. Although ophthalmic vasoregulation is insensitive to hypotensive insult, the ocular hypoperfusion causes neuroretinal dysfunction.

ADRIAN YOUNG, COMMON, MOUSE ON MARS, DEERHOOF...

Happy Friday, Seekers! Carrie here.

Forgive me for being late with this post today - I blame post-CFRR brain fog ;)

Today I am honored to host a blogging friend of mine, Beckie Burnham, from By the Book! I love Beckie's blog, and if you haven't yet checked it out you really must.

She's here today to talk about her Faith and Fiction Bible Study/Book Club, which I think is one of the BEST ideas EVER...

“Just because it isn’t real, doesn’t make it not true.”

That is my standard answer when someone says *gasp* they don’t read fiction because it is not real. This maxim is especially true for Christian Fiction. I am an avid reader, a book-pusher, who manages to work books and reading into just about every conversation and activity. When my church’s book club was looking for something a little different to pique interest and encourage attendance, we came up with a combo book club/Bible study. I had just read Charles Martin’s Long Way Gone and knew that this excellent reimagining of the Prodigal Son would be just the thing for our new experiment. When it was met with great enthusiasm the Faith And Fiction Bible Study was born. Studying the Bible plus reading fiction — what could be better!?

The Faith And Fiction group always chooses Christian fiction to accompany its study of scripture. Christian fiction is not only unique in its world view, but CF authors are committed to excellence in writing and research and producing a work that not only entertains, but is written with an audience of One in mind. Across many genres, truths are expressed in unique ways. With hundreds of books to choose from, my group is set for many more studies to come.

From the earliest days our goal was to study the Bible first, but the addition of a complimentary novel has opened our imaginations to dig even deeper into the Word. We have chosen a number of Biblical novels to accompany scripture study — Rebekah by Jill Eileen Smith and Delilah: Treacherous Beauty by Angela Hunt are just two. Other genres have also offered extraordinary insight into the stories of the Bible, but application in a modern world — How Sweet The Sound by Amy K. Sorrells and For Such A Time by Kate Breslin. Whether we are studying a specific Biblical figure (Miriam by Mesu Andrews) or broader topics like the the healing ministry of Jesus (Madman by Tracy Groot), the novels we have chosen add details of life that we sometimes overlook while reading our Bibles. We find ourselves questioning and researching to ferret our what is truly real. Creative twists are also a wonderful surprise. Many of us were forced from our reading comfort zones when we studied the role of Old Testament prophets and lost ourselves in the fantasy world of Prophet by R. J. Larson.

The format of Faith And Fiction is quite simple. We meet once a week for three weeks of Bible study, and then on the fourth week we have book club. Those book club meetings are great for discussing the usual — character, plot, setting — and also what God was and isup to! Food often plays a role in book clubs, and our group is no exception. We have had middle eastern honey cake, lentil stew, and Hamantashcen to add our own bit of authenticity and fun.

What do you need to start a Faith And Fiction Bible Study / Book Club of your own? Just a love of books and the Book. The following are the topics/people we have studied and the novels we read. Along with the novels listed, there are many, many more CF to choose from.

Delilah: Treacherous Beauty by Angela Hunt
For Such A Time by Kate Breslin (Esther)
How Sweet The Sound by Amy K. Sorrells (Tamar)
The Legend of Sheba by Tosca Lee (Solomon and the Queen of Sheba)
Long Way Gone by Charles Martin (The Prodigal Son)
Madman by Tracy Groot (healing ministry of Jesus)
Miriam by Mesu Andrews (Miriam and Exodus)
On This Foundation by Lynn Austin (Nehemiah)
Prophet by R. J. Larson (Old Testament prophets)
Rebekah by Jill Eileen Smith (Jacob and Rebekah)
Reign by Ginger Garrett (Ahab and Jezebel)

Beckie Burnham is a wife, mom to grown kids, and an avid book pusher! A blogger of Christian fiction for almost 10 years, she also leads two book clubs, one of which combines Bible study and a fiction discussion (Faith And Fiction Bible Study). When not reading books (when is that really?!?) she enjoys spending time at her cabin in the north Georgia mountains.

What are some other books you think would be great candidates for a Faith & Fiction Bible Study? (tell us the book & what theme it would be great for)
Have you participated in something similar?
How does this appeal to you as an author? As a reader?

Come to rally on Monday to protest the Mayor letting charters access student information to help them recruit students      Comment   Translate Page

Please come and show your support and share with others.  Don’t let the Mayor chicken out on this important issue because he is more scared of the charter lobby than he is about ignoring parent wishes, violating their family's privacy and undermining our public schools.

NYC Parents call for protection of their children’s privacy

What: Press conference to oppose DOE’s practice of sharing personal student information with charter schools
Who: NYC public school parents and parent leaders
When: Monday April 15, 2019 at 1:00 PM
Where: The steps of the Tweed Courthouse, 52 Chambers Street, downtown Manhattan

Why:   NYC public school parents and parent leaders  demand that the Mayor cease the practice of allowing charter schools access to student personal information.  NYC is the only district in the country which voluntarily shares this information with charters to help them market their schools and recruit students. In response to long-standing parent complaints, Chancellor Carranza has repeatedly promised parent leaders in recent weeks, both publicly and privately that this practice will be discontinued, but the Mayor has yet to make a commitment to do so and in the last few days has said no decision has yet been made.

Parents have complained about the violation of their children’s privacy for years, and a FERPA complaint to the US Department of Education about this practice was filed in November 2017.  Moreover, by allowing access to this information, the DOE has encouraged the rapid expansion of charter schools, which are now costing our public schools more than $2.1 billion per year. As a result,  NYC public schools have less space and fewer resources to educate our neediest students.

While in the past, the DOE has suggested that public schools improve their “marketing”  to compete, they do not have the necessary funds to do so and in any case, most parents do not believe that the public schools  should be forced to divert what precious resources they have for this purpose.

The Education Council Consortium (ECC), made up of elected and appointed Community Education and Citywide Council members, was established to address issues that affect schools and communities throughout all five boroughs.  We meet regularly with the Chancellor to help shape, advise, provide feedback and comment on educational policies, visions and goals.

Background: The Hispanic/Latino population in the US is experiencing high rates of obesity and cardio-metabolic disease that may be attributable to a nutrition transition away from traditional diets emphasizing whole plant foods. In the US, plant-based diets have been shown to be effective in preventing and controlling obesity and cardio-metabolic disease in large samples of primarily non-Hispanic subjects. Studying this association in US Hispanic/Latinos could inform culturally tailored interventions.

Objective: To examine whether the plant-based diet pattern that is frequently followed by Hispanic/Latino Seventh-day Adventists is associated with lower levels of adiposity and adiposity-related biomarkers.

Methods: The Adventist Multiethnic Nutrition Study (AMEN) enrolled 74 Seventh-day Adventists from five Hispanic/Latino churches within a 20 mile radius of Loma Linda, CA into a cross-sectional study of diet (24 h recalls, surveys) and health (anthropometrics and biomarkers).

Results: Vegetarian diet patterns (Vegan, Lacto-ovo vegetarian, Pesco-vegetarian) were associated with significantly lower BMI (24.5 kg/m2 vs. 27.9 kg/m2, p = 0.006), waist circumference (34.8 cm vs. 37.5 cm, p = 0.01), and fat mass (18.3 kg vs. 23.9 kg, p = 0.007), as compared to non-vegetarians. Adiposity was positively associated with pro-inflammatory cytokines (Interleukin-6) in this sample, but adjusting for this effect did not alter the associations with vegetarian diet.

Conclusions: Plant-based eating as practiced by US-based Hispanic/Latino Seventh-day Adventists is associated with BMI in the recommended range. Further work is needed to characterize this type of diet for use in obesity-related interventions among Hispanic/Latinos in the US.

The rates of obesity and diabetes have sharply increased in the last decade among Hispanics/Latinos in North America (14). Currently, diabetes is the fifth leading cause of death in Hispanics/Latinos, and the trend represents a health disparity whereby rates are 60% higher among Hispanics/Latinos as compared to non-Hispanic Whites and increasing faster than in other major ethnic groups (3, 5). In a large sample of Hispanic/Latino adults in four regions of United States (n = 16,400), the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos found that about 1 in 3 individuals had pre-diabetes, and that only about half of individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D) had it under control (6).

One potential contributor to this burden of obesity and diabetes is the occurrence of a “nutrition transition” occurring in most people of Mexican origin but accelerated in US Hispanic/Latinos as they acculturate to consuming higher intake of meats and processed foods, and lower intake of whole plant foods commonly found in the traditional diet (i.e., squash, maize, beans) (79). For example, the analysis of a nationally representative sample of US Mexican adults found higher rates of overweight/obesity in those who had “transitioned” from traditional eating patterns emphasizing maize to patterns emphasizing red meat, processed meat, and processed foods (1012). These emerging data support that a plant-based dietary intervention could be effective in primary and secondary prevention of obesity and obesity-related diabetes in the Hispanic/Latino population.

Overall, in a systematic review of 15 intervention studies (17 intervention groups among them) in multi-ethnic samples, Barnard et al. has shown that interventions with the vegetarian diet contributed to an average of more than 3 kg of weight loss (13). For diabetics, a similar systematic review of vegetarian diet interventions indicated significant improvement in glycemic control (14).

A recent pilot study at Loma Linda University has shown that a 5-week plant-based, culturally-tailored diet intervention implemented through community clinics and a church significantly improved hemoglobin A1C levels over a 6 month follow-up in 32 Latino diabetics living in a medically underserved area. At Loma Linda University, more than 60 years of NIH-funded prospective cohort studies [1960 Adventist Mortality Study (15), 1976 Adventist Health Study-1 (16), 2002 Adventist Health Study-2 (17)] have shown that the vegetarian diet was associated with lower risk of weight gain (18, 19), stroke (20), and diabetes (21, 22), and on this causal pathway, a longer life expectancy. These cohorts enrolled Seventh-day Adventists (most recently a nationwide cohort of 96,000 multi-ethnic adults in AHS-2) who provide a unique insight into diet since, due to faith-based recommendations, about 50% are vegetarian, and virtually all avoid smoking and alcohol (23). Faith-based counsels on diet also encourage the consumption of specific plant foods (i.e., legumes, nuts) in place of animal products (19). Hypotheses generated from these cohorts have been tested in landmark intervention trials.

The Adventist Multi-ethnic Nutrition (AMEN) Study is a new pilot study from Loma Linda University involving Hispanic/Latino Seventh-day Adventist adults for the purpose of studying the association between their cultural tailoring of a plant-based diet and selected health outcomes. To date, we have observed beneficial associations between health outcomes and culturally-tailored plant-based diet choices in Black Adventists (24, 25) and in Asian Adventists (20), respectively. The aim of this report is to test the hypothesis that the culturally-tailored plant-based dietary pattern practiced by Hispanic/Latino Seventh-day Adventists is associated with lower levels of adiposity and adiposity-related biomarkers. Findings from this work can potentially inform the cultural tailoring of plant-based diet choices for dietary interventions in the broader population of US Hispanic/Latinos.
Study Population

The AMEN study is a cross-sectional investigation of diet and cardio-metabolic markers conducted during 2013–2016 in churches within a 20 mile radius of Loma Linda University. Our target congregations were predominantly of Hispanic/Latino background. The inclusion criteria included: (1) age 18 years or older, (2) baptized into the Seventh-day Adventist church, (3) self-identify as Hispanic, and (4) no self-report of dementia, pregnancy, or breastfeeding.

Recruitment efforts were initiated by assembling a community advisory board of influential individuals from the Hispanic and Asian Adventist churches in Southern California. Based on the advice of this board, we selected five Hispanic congregations. An additional criterion was that the congregations be meeting in facilities that could accommodate a weekend health clinic. Recruitment from these congregations was done by: (1) linking recruitment to informative health and lifestyle presentations done by Loma Linda University lifestyle medicine faculty, (2) linking recruitment to health and wellness clinics done on the church premises over a weekend, and (3) notices on church bulletin boards, social media, and through e-mail campaigns.

Through these efforts, we recruited 141 subjects from the five congregations that had been invited to participate, of whom 101 subjects were eligible for enrollment. Due to missing data for pertinent diet and anthropometric variables, our analytic sample consisted of 74 subjects. All data collection forms were translated into English and Spanish, and a bi-lingual translator was available for assistance.
Outcome Measures

Eligible subjects were enrolled if they attended a health assessment clinic that occurred either as part of a health fair at their church or by appointment at Loma Linda University. A 12 h fasting blood sample drawn by a certified phlebotomist and first void urine sample were collected from each participant. For this analysis, biospecimens were analyzed for a comprehensive metabolic panel, and also tests of inflammatory markers (interleukin-6, C reactive protein) using a previously described protocol by Jaceldo-Siegl et al. (26). Briefly, collection of blood was done after an overnight fast, and serum was separated from the cells within 30 min of collection, placed on wet ice, and then shipped or transported to the central study laboratory at Loma Linda, CA for further processing. Blood was aliquoted to 0.5 mL samples and immediately stored in liquid nitrogen until analysis. Concentrations of CRP and IL-6 were measured in duplicate samples using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits from R & D Systems (Minneapolis, MN, USA) for IL-6, Thermo Fisher Scientific (Waltham, MA, USA), and Assaypro (St. Charles, MO, USA) for CRP. For IL-6, the detectable limit was 0.039 pg/mL, and intra- and inter-assay CV were 6.9 and 7.2%; and for CRP, these were 100 pg/mL, 5.5 and 7.6%, respectively.

Blood pressure (BP), weight, height, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and body composition were assessed on-site. Height was measured to the nearest quarter inch (0.64 cm) using the Seca 214 Portable Height Rod (Seca Corp, Hamburg, Germany). Weight (measured to the nearest half pound or 0.23 kg) and body composition were assessed using a body composition analyzer (Tanita, Model TBF-300A, Arlington Heights, IL, USA). Waist circumference was obtained using an anthropometric tape placed around the waist just above the hipbone.

Blood pressure and resting pulse were assessed each as the average of three measurements using the OMRON Digital Blood Pressure Monitor HEM-7471C (Omron Healthcare Inc., Vernon Hills, IL, USA). All subjects were subject to a standard protocol, including a 5 min quiet relaxation period prior to the first reading of BP and resting pulse, and 1 min rest between consecutive measurements.
Classification of Vegetarian Diet

Dietary intake was assessed using two methods: (1) A single 24 h recall using standard methodology that has been discussed previously (27), (2) Survey items adapted from EPIC Oxford where subjects were also asked about their consumption (in the past 30 days) of four animal-based products (meat, fish, dairy, and eggs). Using the latter method to survey usual intake, participants were classified as non-vegetarian if they currently eat meat; pescatarian if they eat no meat but eat fish; lacto-ovo vegetarian if they eat dairy and eggs but not meat or fish; and strict vegetarian if they do not consume meat, eggs, fish and dairy. Due to the limited sample size, strict vegetarians, lacto-ovo vegetarians, and pescatarians were considered as following a plant-based diet and collapsed into a “vegetarian” group. Survey items measuring meat intake among Seventh-day Adventists have been validated against multiple 24 h recalls with correlations that exceed 0.80 (27).
Assessment of Demographic, Religiosity, and Culture-Specific Data

We obtained demographic, spoken language, nativity and religiosity data by questionnaire. Religiosity was assessed by asking the question, “How religious are you?” where we defined “religious” as having “to do with a personal experience and not just a behavior, like going to church.” Responses were elicited using a 10-point semantic differential scale where 1 represents not religious at all and 10 the most religious.

Descriptive analyses comparing vegetarians and non-vegetarians on selected subject characteristics were conducted using t-tests for continuous, and χ2 or Fisher test for categorical variables. Continuous outcome variables (anthropometric, body composition, pulse, and blood pressure measures) were compared in vegetarians and non-vegetarians using generalized linear models adjusted for age, sex, and education. Ninety-five percent confidence intervals for the difference between these adjusted means were computed using the standard errors of the regression coefficients in the models.

In Table 1, we examined demographics characteristics of Hispanic/Latino subjects in the AMEN study. We found that vegetarians tended to be older (p = 0.006) and more educated (p = 0.02) as compared to non-vegetarians (Table 1). There was no significant difference in religiosity between the vegetarians and non-vegetarians.

Table 1. Selected characteristics among Hispanic/Latino vegetarians and non-vegetarians in the Adventist Multi-ethnic Nutrition (AMEN) Study.

Vegetarian Diet and Adiposity

In linear regression models (Table 2), we tested the association between measures of adiposity (BMI, waist circumference (WC), fat mass, and percent body fat) as outcomes and vegetarian diet status as a main exposure. We found that BMI was lower among the vegetarians than the non-vegetarians (24.5 kg/m2 vs. 27.9 kg/m2, p = 0.006) after adjusting for age, sex, and education. Vegetarians also had significantly lower waist circumference (34.8 cm vs. 37.5 cm), fat mass (18.3 kg vs. 23.9 kg), and percent body fat (28.4% vs. 32%) as compared to non-vegetarians. Pulse rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure values among vegetarians were not significantly different from those of non-vegetarians.

Table 2. Comparison of obesity measures, body composition, pulse, and blood pressure in vegetarians and non-vegetarians in the AMEN Study.

Vegetarian Diet, Adiposity, and Inflammatory Markers

We found that log-transformed interleukin-6 (IL-6) was positively associated with the following adiposity outcomes: BMI (β = 1.64, p = 0.04), waist circumference (β = 1.32, p = 0.08), fat mass (β = 1.32, p = 0.05), and fat percent (β = 4.22, p = 0.004). Adding the main exposure for vegetarian status to the model did not appreciably reduce these associations. For log transformed C-reactive protein (CRP), positive associations were found for fat mass (β = 2.38, p = 0.03) and fat percent (β = 3.13, p = 0.004). Similarly, adding the main exposure did not change CRP associations with measures of adiposity. We note that the power to detect mediation was low, making type 1 errors more likely.

There were no significant differences between vegetarians and non-vegetarians for log-transformed CRP (β = −0.06562, p = 0.78) or log-transformed IL-6 (β = −0.19132, p = 0.29).

In the AMEN study, we found that in a sample of Seventh-day Adventist Hispanic/Latino adults, those following a vegetarian dietary pattern had a BMI that was lower (24.5 kg/m2 vs. 27.9 kg/m2, p = 0.006) and within federally-recommended limits as compared to non-vegetarians. These findings were confirmed by similar decreases in other measures of adiposity [fat mass (18.3 kg vs. 23.9 kg), and percent body fat (28.4% vs. 32%)] and abdominal adiposity [waist circumference (34.8 cm vs. 37.5cm)].

These findings are concordant with findings from non-Hispanic white Adventists (18, 19, 22), Black/African American Adventists (22, 25), and Asian Adventists (20). For Black Adventists, Akbar et al. has reported a “cultural tailoring” of the vegetarian diet chosen whereby Southern and Caribbean influenced dietary patterns introduced a wide range of plant foods into the diet (24). In US-based Asian Indian Adventists, Singh reported the predominance of nuts as a major source of protein in vegetarians who were at lower BMI (20).

Our next step in the AMEN study was to investigate how the protective patterns of plant-based eating in Hispanic/Latino adults were influenced by cultural preference for specific plant foods. These data can potentially inform culturally-tailored plant-based dietary interventions for the broader population of US Hispanic/Latinos who have been experiencing a nutrition transition away from simpler, more traditional diets rich in whole plant foods.
Plant-Based Eating in US Hispanic/Latinos

Our data indicates that more plant-based eating in US-based Hispanic/Latino Adventist adults was associated on average with adiposity indices falling within the federally-recommended limits. If this association holds true also for non-Adventist Hispanics/Latinos, how feasible and scalable is it to have Adventist and non-Adventist Hispanics/Latinos increase their plant-based dietary choices as a means of preventing the obesity and cardiometabolic diseases that are disproportionately prevalent in their community?

When considering this question it is noteworthy that data from Latin America indicate a rich cultural tradition of eating and preparing a diverse range of regional plant foods. For example, the Tarahumara Indians of Mexico traditionally adhered to a diet consisting of beans, corn, and squash and very little meat, and this pattern has been associated with lower risk of cardiometabolic disease (28) and can be significantly compromised by plying the Tarahumara with a typical U.S. diet (29). Studies from South America report that vegan and semi-vegetarian Peruvian and Brazilian subjects (following traditional cultural choices involving plant foods) do have lower rates of hypertension, dyslipidemia, and obesity as compared to omnivores (30). These small studies provide clues that increasing plant-based diet choices based on long-held cultural traditions of eating whole plant foods can potentially be an attractive target for high impact interventions. When designing dietary interventions we note that the strict vegetarian diet pattern is not commonly practiced by US Hispanic/Latinos (31), and further research is needed in this community to examine whether increasing plant food intake to the point of semi-vegetarian or pescatarian pattern can improve health outcomes.
Plant-Based Eating, Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines, and Obesity in Hispanic/Latinos

Among the Hispanic/Latino adults of the AMEN study, we did find that measures of adiposity were associated with pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-6. Compared to non-vegetarian dietary patterns, vegetarian dietary patterns generate increased microbially-generated short chain fatty acids, which reduce systemic inflammation (e.g., IL-6), increase hormonal satiety-signaling (e.g., glucagon-like peptide-1) and reduce insulin resistance (32, 33). Among Hispanic/Latino subjects, recent studies suggest that IL-6 may be elevated from a young age, and the link across the lifespan to higher rates of cardiometabolic disease may be due to specific IL-6 polymorphisms in Latino youth (34). Interestingly, adding IL-6 to our models examining association with vegetarian diet exposure did not alter the protective effect of the diet on obesity.

The AMEN study has important limitations. The cross-sectional and observational design precludes inferring a causal effect from the association of diet with obesity and obesity-related disease. The purpose of our pilot study was to generate culturally-specific hypotheses for testing this association in longitudinal and experimental designs with novel culturally-tailored interventions.

The relatively small sample size limited our statistical power to test more complex food and nutrient models, and for testing interaction and mediation. We note, however, the significant and cross-validating associations between plant-based eating and measures of adiposity that persist despite the limited power to detect these associations.

Religiosity could also be a factor since we are studying a faith-based group. It is noteworthy, however, that we observed no difference in religiosity between the vegetarians and non-vegetarians we studied. Measurement error in dietary assessment is always present in observational work, but we note a decades-long track record by our research group validating diet and vegetarian diet survey measures in Adventists (16, 17, 35).

Our findings from Hispanic/Latino Seventh-day Adventists indicate that plant-based diet patterns were associated with adiposity in the recommended range, and effects were consistent across multiple measures of adiposity and obesity-related inflammatory markers. Further studies of how Hispanics/Latinos have culturally tailored the Adventist plant-based eating pattern could potentially inform interventions for the broader population of Hispanics/Latinos.

Short on electricity, food and water, Venezuelans return to religion      Comment   Translate Page

CARACAS, Venezuela - The lights in Petare had gone dark. Again.
The people of Venezuela's largest slum were used to the blackouts that halt the flow of water, exhaust their supplies of expensive candles and fray their already thin patience.
But this would not be like any other lightless night in the hillside barrio. Amid the darkened alleyways, a strange, joyful sound emerged between the zinc-roofed homes. Tambourines jingled, maracas rattled, drums throbbed. Voices called all who could hear to salvation.

"Cristo sana y salva . . ." 10 members of the Restoring Hearts church sang against the darkness. "Christ heals and saves. . . ."

Buffeted by political and humanitarian crises, one of Latin America's least religious countries is turning to faith. As the political stalemate between President Nicolás Maduro and opposition leader Juan Guaidó grinds into another month, and shortages of electricity, food and water reduce life to a daily struggle to survive, leaders across religious traditions are reporting a flood of worshippers, lapsed and new, searching for comfort and answers.

"All my masses are full, which has never happened before," said the Rev. Jesús Godoy, a Catholic priest at the Good Shepherd parish in the Chacao district of Caracas. He says he's seeing more than 2,000 people each weekend.

"They beg for help," Godoy said. "They want God to give them the tools to live in crisis."

In this deeply polarized country, analysts are watching for signs that this growing faithful could emerge as a political force.

Already there are indications: Clergy members hold forth on the country's woes in homilies and sermons. Churches, synagogues and mosques increase their services to the poor. Priests and nuns attend rallies for Guaidó in their clerical dress.

"To be a spiritual actor in Venezuela today is to express solidarity with people that are suffering and feeling powerless," said Geoff Ramsey, assistant director for Venezuela for the Washington Office on Latin America. "That in of itself is a political act."

But an organized, faith-based movement in response to the political impasse between Maduro and Guaidó has yet to emerge. Analysts say they see no evidence Maduro is more concerned about religious leaders or groups than he is by the general opposition to his rule.

Venezuela's socialist government has a complicated history with faith.

Hugo Chávez, who launched the revolution two decades ago, saw potential in using Christianity as a tool of the state, and invoked its imagery as part of his public appeal.

Early on, some religious leaders were open to his promise to improve the lives of the poor. Now, many are critical.

The Pentecostal televangelist Javier Bertucci, who leads a 16,000-member megachurch in the city of Valencia, ran for president last year as an alternative to both Maduro and the opposition - and managed nearly 1 million votes.

Venezuela's Catholic Church, the largest and most powerful faith group here, has been vocal in opposing Maduro.

Godoy helps connect people on the streets with jobs, housing, food, social workers and psychologists. He sees his ministry as an essentially political project.

"We comfort them, but we also must denounce evil when we see it," he said. "We cannot be an accomplice to injustice."

Pentecostal pastor Carlos Vielma has watched attendance in his Caracas congregation explode in the past 18 months to nearly 3,000 at three services each week. He preaches regularly about discernment to combat disinformation and propaganda.

"It's impossible not to talk about the situation from the pulpit," Vielma said. "We are all living the same thing. We can't avoid it, but we are encouraging, empowering and comforting them in the process."

Maduro has taken note. In an unusual service broadcast on state television in January, he called himself a "true Christian leader," and asked Venezuelans to pray for him.

Jaime Palacios, a professor of philosophy at Andrés Bello Catholic University in Caracas, says churches, synagogues and mosques are plugged into the social and economic challenges of the communities they serve, and can be organizing bodies for political action.

In this South American country of 30 million, signs of collapse are everywhere. Children and adults pick food out of rotting garbage heaps. Hospitals ask patients to buy and bring their own IV bags and gloves to surgery. Teenagers have been shot to death in their homes by masked men.

The country is divided and deadlocked. Maduro claimed victory in elections last year widely viewed as fraudulent. Guaidó declared himself interim president in January.

Leidy Villegas says her Christian faith helps her confront reality. She can barely afford food for her family, and can't find clean water every day. But the idea that there is something bigger and more powerful than her country's crisis drove her to sing with her church in Petare.

"We found happiness for a few hours and went home joyful," the 34-year-old mother of four said. "We even forgot about the blackout for a while.

"We know worse days are coming our way, but just like we did that day, we always find refuge in God's glory," she said.

As measured by commitments such as attending weekly services and prayer, Venezuela is one of the least religious countries in Latin America, according to polling data from the Pew Research Center. Few Venezuelans would say they were atheist or agnostic; instead, they express belief in spiritual rather than religious terms.

No one keeps national attendance numbers. But leaders across Venezuela's faith traditions - Catholic, evangelical Christians, Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormons, Buddhists - say they've seen crowds at services jump in recent months. Several estimated a spike of at least 30 percent. They say newcomers have taken the place of the millions who have left the country.

"It's something new to me, to see so many people coming down from their homes on Sundays," said the Rev. Manuel Zapata, a Jesuit priest. "People have a huge spiritual need this year."

David Smilde, a senior fellow at the Washington Office on Latin America, said the return to religion makes sense.

"Not having water, not knowing if you have anything to eat - these are existential challenges," he said. "That's precisely when religion starts to seem interesting."

The Rev. Alfredo Infante, a Jesuit priest in Caracas, is glad people are rediscovering their faith. But he worries for the country.

"It concerns me that during the prayers of the faithful, the things children are asking of God are changing," Infante said. "Instead of praying for toys or to win their soccer match, childish things, they are scared of not eating and having to emigrate.

"It's awful. We are in danger of children losing their childhoods."

Brother Guayanés has seen a dramatic increase in visits to Petare's Callejón de los Brujos.

Here in Sorcerors' Alley, Guayanés, whose birth name is Carlos Márquez, and six other spirit healers charge cash for a date with the divine.

Guayanés says he sees 300 to 400 people a week seeking healing from his idiosyncratic mix of Santería, Catholic, indigenous and New Age ritual.

A young couple brought their 3-year-old daughter to the silk-robed healer. She has asthma, and her parents can't afford her medicine.

The family has always believed in his power to heal, said Giovanni García, the girl's father. But now the ritual is indispensable to their precarious lives.

The family sat before an altar of saints, melted wax and the bust of an indigenous cacique, an indigenous tribal chief.

"In the name of the Father, of the Son . . ." Guayanés began, bathing them in smoke from his cigar.

The sobs of a sick baby echoed in the shabby reception area, where at least five others were waiting for the healer.

"Everyone comes here with a different problem," Guayanés said. "But lately, people are suffering from nerves, anxiety and depression. There's an imbalance in the spirit."

Guayanés took a swig of local liquor in front of a statue of Simon Bolívar and Changó, a deity of the Yoruba religion.

"We are a boat adrift. There is no captain," he said. "Here, we peddle hope."

In the Andean city of Mérida, the Buddhist Center offers a different approach.

"We will never get away from suffering completely," said center director Vajranatha, who goes by one name. "So instead of trying to escape from it, we turn toward it and accept that suffering."

Attendance there is growing, too. Through meditation and study, center leader Carlos Luis says, Buddhists old and new are learning to transcend and liberate themselves from Venezuela's misery.

At Restoring Hearts church in Petare, the Rev. Felix Uribe shepherds a small pantry of items donated by congregants: Threadbare clothes, a wheelchair, crutches, a few bottles of medicine.

The evangelical minister supplements this modest store with Bible verses about God's promises to bring a lasting resolution to their country's earthly anguish.

"These are the final days," he said. "The Bible is full of stories of suffering and loss, but there is a promise. And that is eternal life. This will all pass away."

Villegas holds on to one particular promise: God will provide.

Eight months ago she was pregnant with her fourth child, but complications required a risky early delivery. With shortages in medical supplies at hospitals, her doctors told her to buy pricey, hard-to-find drugs she could not afford.

She burst into tears. Her faith waned.

Then she started to pray. Within minutes, someone donated what she needed to deliver her son, Diogber.

She thumbed the yellowed pages of her worn Bible and pointed to Psalm 91.

"Here God promises me that he will be with me in times of anguish," she said.

Villegas and others here say they don't waste time blaming any political figure for Venezuela's turmoil.

Gladys Torres, 73, had never been to a spiritualist. The lifelong Catholic said she invokes God now more than ever before. But it had been six months since the diabetic has taken insulin or the hypertension pills she needs to keep her blood pressure under control.

She's losing weight. She's been feeling weak and hopeless. Her neighbor suggested she visit Guayanés.

Torres says she prays regularly.

"¿Dios mío, hasta cuándo, hasta cuándo?" she said. "Oh Lord, until when?"

A fatal outbreak of ST11 carbapenem-resistant hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae in a Chinese hospital: a molecular epidemiological study.

Lancet Infect Dis. 2018 01;18(1):37-46

Authors: Gu D, Dong N, Zheng Z, Lin D, Huang M, Wang L, Chan EW, Shu L, Yu J, Zhang R, Chen S

BACKGROUND: Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae strains often cause life-threatening community-acquired infections in young and healthy hosts, but are usually sensitive to antibiotics. In this study, we investigated a fatal outbreak of ventilator-associated pneumonia caused by a new emerging hypervirulent K pneumoniae strain.
METHODS: The outbreak occurred in the integrated intensive care unit of a new branch of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University (Hangzhou, China). We collected 21 carbapenem-resistant K pneumoniae strains from five patients and characterised these strains for their antimicrobial susceptibility, multilocus sequence types, and genetic relatedness using VITEK-2 compact system, multilocus sequence typing, and whole genome sequencing. We selected one representative isolate from each patient to establish the virulence potential using a human neutrophil assay and Galleria mellonella model and to establish the genetic basis of their hypervirulence phenotype.
FINDINGS: All five patients had undergone surgery for multiple trauma and subsequently received mechanical ventilation. The patients were aged 53-73 years and were admitted to the intensive care unit between late February and April, 2016. They all had severe pneumonia, carbapenem-resistant K pneumoniae infections, and poor responses to antibiotic treatment and died due to severe lung infection, multiorgan failure, or septic shock. All five representative carbapenem-resistant K pneumoniae strains belonged to the ST11 type, which is the most prevalent carbapenem-resistant K pneumoniae type in China, and originated from the same clone. The strains were positive on the string test, had survival of about 80% after 1 h incubation in human neutrophils, and killed 100% of wax moth larvae (G mellonella) inoculated with 1 × 106 colony-forming units of the specimens within 24 h, suggesting that they were hypervirulent K pneumoniae. Genomic analyses showed that the emergence of these ST11 carbapenem-resistant hypervirulent K pneumoniae strains was due to the acquisition of a roughly 170 kbp pLVPK-like virulence plasmid by classic ST11 carbapenem-resistant K pneumoniae strains. We also detected these strains in specimens collected in other regions of China.
INTERPRETATION: The ST11 carbapenem-resistant hypervirulent K pneumoniae strains pose a substantial threat to human health because they are simultaneously hypervirulent, multidrug resistant, and highly transmissible. Control measures should be implemented to prevent further dissemination of such organisms in the hospital setting and the community.

Caring Causes: Save the Children      Comment   Translate Page
Six months after Hurricane Michael’s powerful winds left a trail of destruction in the Florida Panhandle, Save the Children remains committed to supporting the ongoing recovery needs of the catastrophic storm’s most vulnerable victims – children.

The national leader in protecting children in emergencies, Save the Children is working to make sure kids and families in the Florida Panhandle most affected by Hurricane Michael have access to crucial early childhood education and afterschool services, and social and emotional support programming that helps them cope with the aftermath of the devastation.

“Hurricane Michael’s powerful winds have long since subsided, but children are still recovering from the distress of having their worlds turned upside down,” said Sarah Thompson, Save the Children's director of U.S. emergencies. “Many have lost their homes and access to critical services – like early learning opportunities – as well as their sense of security. Children still need our help to fully recover from the devastation and trauma of this disastrous storm.”

The strongest storm on record to ever hit the Florida Panhandle, Hurricane Michael has damaged or destroyed many child care and early learning centers across the Panhandle – including more than 60 percent in Bay and Calhoun counties. Save the Children continues to collaborate with early learning partners in the Sunshine State to help restore these centers so children can get back to learning and playing with their peers in safe and supportive environments.

“Communities cannot begin to recover after disaster until child care and early learning centers are back up and running,” said Donna Harper, Save the Children’s emergency recovery lead in the Florida Panhandle. “Children need to get back to a comforting, familiar routine – one that allows them to learn, play, eat and grow with their peers.”

Save the Children is providing child care and early learning centers with supplies, funding and support to help them reopen as soon as possible. In addition, it is supporting youth organizations that provide afterschool programs and activities for children, helping them recover and expand to serve children affected by the storm.

Save the Children is also working with communities, early learning networks and university partners to deliver its social and emotional recovery programs, including Journey of Hope and HEART, which help children and caregivers understand and cope with the stress, fear, loss and trauma that can come in the wake of a disaster like Hurricane Michael.

“Disasters can affect children’s health, behavior and ability to learn, and fracture their relationships for years,” said Thompson. “Save the Children knows how critical it is to offer support to children that enables them to process their feelings after traumatic events,”

Developed after Hurricane Katrina, Journey of Hope is an evidence-based program that provides children a safe, small group setting to explore and normalize their emotions, develop healthy coping skills, build confidence and foster positive peer relationships. It also helps parents and caregivers cope and become more resilient after emergencies, so they can be there to support their children’s needs.

HEART (Healing and Education Through the Arts) helps children affected by serious or chronic stress find new ways to share their feelings and experiences, using the proven power of artistic expression to help them recover.

In the earliest days following Hurricane Michael, Save the Children’s emergency response team set up safe play areas in evacuation shelters – called Child Friendly Spaces – where kids could be kids again, express themselves and begin to cope; got critical family supplies into the hands of moms and dads who needed them most through Emergency Distribution Events; and played a leading role in helping child care centers and education programs recover and reopen, to get children back to learning and their normal routine.

Gold as insurance against hyperinflation and driver of economic growth      Comment   Translate Page

According to analysts, the value of gold in relation to most world currencies has reached record levels. Experts call the yellow metal reliable protection against hyperinflation and focus on its key role in the global economy in the long term.

Analysts believe that an illustrative example of the depreciation of the national currency is the situation in Venezuela, which is dominated by record hyperinflation, as a result of which paper money lost purchasing power. Another illustration is the galloping inflation in Turkey, where prices rose by 20% in March 2019. According to forecasts, by the end of this year, the fall of the Turkish economy could reach 3%.

The current situation is favorable for the precious metal. Last week, the leading market players, market makers (literally – "market makers"), made a number of large purchases of gold. According to analysts, this fact indicates that with a price below $1300 for 1 troy ounce, precious metals will say goodbye forever. During five trading sessions, large hedgers purchased over 76 thousand contracts (1 contract = 100 ounces), or almost 295 tons of gold at a price of $1285 to $1300 for 1 troy ounce.

According to experts, this is an impressive figure for one week, indicating that the value of gold will rise steadily and is unlikely to return to previous values. Market makers, active buyers of the precious metal, form this trend themselves. They buy the yellow metal at a lower price and sell on its growth. By purchasing this metal, they hedge the purchase of "short" positions on the exchange in futures and options. Large purchases of these market players mean only one thing: a further drop in prices is either limited or unlikely.

Analyzing the situation on the market of the yellow metal, the experts come to the conclusion that the price of gold will continue to consolidate in the narrowing range of $ 1280- $ 1350 with an increase in local minima. According to forecasts of experts, in the second half of 2019, the precious metal will begin to rise in price. The peak price of gold should be expected in 2021 at about $1900-$2000 for 1 troy ounce. From this point on, a relatively deep correction will begin with a possible failure of the price in 2022, analysts summarize.

The external geopolitical background also contributes to the formation of the cost of precious metals. In the next fifteen years, experts expect the pendulum of world leadership to swing toward Asia, and the United States will not play its former significant role. In such a transitional period, one should not hope for stability in global financial markets. Analysts do not exclude the growth of trade and money conflicts, due to which the role of gold in the global financial system will be very high.

IKE’S LIST OF DOMAINS AT AUCTION FOR Saturday, April 12th      Comment   Translate Page

Domain Shane Domain Shane:
Last Saturday I fished a tournament  on the Potomac river. There was an accident that caused a 13 year old boy to be severely injured. So I thought it would be a good opportunity to review some basic life saving skills.
After fishing we returned to the boat ramp to weigh the fish in, the fish have to be alive and have to swim away after being weighed or your disqualified. We got back about 15 minutes before the deadline of 4:00 PM. Someone ran up from the ramp yelling call 911, but had no other information.
The first point to remember is that 911 isn’t going to send the right resources if they have no idea what’s going on. So if you’re having an emergency and can’t call yourself, you need to make sure that whoever is going to call has at least some basic info. In this case, “call an ambulance, there’s an injured boy” would have gone a lot farther than simply yelling call 911. The more information the better, if possible, but at least the basics like, we need an ambulance, or there’s a fire, or send the police.
After a few minutes a boat arrived at the ramp with frantic yelling and waving. I wasn’t at the ramp at this point, but someone came and got me within a few minutes. The boy had someone been pinned between the rod rack in the back of the boat and a tree. The boy was lying in the boat on his side with an adult holding pressure on his arm, but it was still bleeding. We later found out that he had a punctured lung, broken ribs, a ruptured spleen, and a severely lacerated arm with arterial bleeding.
The next important point to take away is that extremity bleeding is a problem  that anyone can mitigate with a variety of things laying around. If the bleeding doesn’t stop easily with pressure, or there are multiple injuries or the potential for multiple injuries, put a tourniquet on first.  People are still scared to do this, but most of the fears of losing a limb are unfounded, Far more people have bled to death because they did not apply a tourniquet. The easiest way is to apply the tourniquet or random supplies  that you turn into a one is on the single long bones of the arms and legs. Even if the bleeding is below the elbow or knee, the tourniquet is more likely to work as intended when placed on the humerus or femur. The distal arms and legs have 2 bones that can create problems when attempting to stop the blood.
Don’t be afraid if the injured person feels pain while your apply it, if they don’t you probably don’t have it tight enough. The idea isn’t to politely comfort them while they die, it’s to  stop them from dying.
For the boy we made a tourniquet out of a piece of anchor rope, a stick as a windless, (the thing you use to crank it tighter) and electrical tape to hold it all together.
And the final point for today, don’t watch someone bleed to death because you’ve always been told not to move them. It seems pretty silly to not move someone for fear of a spinal injury as they bleed out, or are in a position that they can’t breath. We largely forgo spinal immobilization precautions unless there is obvious compromise to the cervical spine. Again the data has found, overwhelmingly, that the small percentage of injured people already have spinal damage done prior to any responder intervention, but a greater number of people have died while taking the time screwing around with a potential injury.
So go watch a video about applying tourniquets. This wasn’t meant to be a tutorial, but rather a reminder to use your head and stop bleeding when you see it.

Press Releases: Remarks With Peruvian Foreign Minister Nestor Popolizio      Comment   Translate Page
Michael R. Pompeo
Secretary of State
Palacio de Gobierno
Lima, Peru
April 13, 2019

MODERATOR: (Via translation) Ladies and gentlemen, good afternoon. With the presence of the Secretary of State of the United States of America, Mr. Michael Pompeo, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Peru, Ambassador Nestor Popolizio Bardales, we will begin with a statement to the media. Next, remarks by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Peru, Ambassador Nestor Popolizio.

FOREIGN MINISTER POPOLIZIO: (Via translation) Good afternoon, Mr. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, friends of the press, and distinguished delegation. We just finished an extremely fruitful and cordial work meeting with my President Mr. Martin Vizcarra. And it was preceded by a meeting in the Peruvian Foreign Ministry to discuss topics of the bilateral relationship. The President of the Republic Martin Vizcarra as well as the Secretary of State Pompeo highlighted the good level of bilateral relations. Firstly, we are countries that have a positive agenda and we have innumerable coincidences and really there are indications that [inaudible] we can continue cooperating. Mention was made of the very important significance that the Free Trade Agreement has had and now, in February, with ten years in force and how this has spurred an important increase of trade between the two countries.

(Via interpreter) Peru, after 10 years since this free trade agreement entered into force, exports 50 percent more to the United States where nontraditional exports are the most important. The United States is our first destination for these types of products, and it is our second trade partner worldwide. It is an important investment partner in Peru, and it is a permanent ally in all areas of cooperation that we get from the United States on a number of issues.

Within this context, the Secretary of State complimented President Martin Vizcarra for his leadership in the fight against corruption, and this fight against corruption is obviously not only a fight that Peru is waging alone. He mentioned the output of the eighth Summit of the Americas held in Lima last year as well as the Lima commitment, where the United States and Peru are allies to combat corruption at all levels, particularly internationally.

Also we talked about the fight against drug trafficking. This is of the utmost importance and a priority for the Government of Peru, and we have agreed that the cooperation of the United States is very important for this fight to be more efficient in a context in which we can provide comprehensive and overarching approach the Government of Peru is implementing to develop alternative development interdiction as well as eradication of coca plantations. This comprehensive approach is accompanied by shared responsibilities that some countries have in fighting against drug trafficking.

In addition to that, President Martin Vizcarra gave information on the actions Peru has taken against illegal mining, particularly in the area of La Pampa in the region of Madre de Dios. this is a task that Peru has undertaken to reaffirm the principle of authority and for us to implement development projects in this area that we are recovering. We count with the cooperation of the United States in this effort.

We also discussed a topic that is of the utmost importance for our two countries and for the region as well, the defense of democracy in the region. This means all the areas in which we agree upon to support the people of Venezuela in recovering their democracy. And recovering democracy means supporting fully the president in charge of Venezuela, Juan Guaido, so that he can consolidate his position as a transition government and so that free, fair, and democratic elections can be held in Venezuela. This obviously means that the illegitimate government of the dictator Nicolas Maduro has to exit. This we are working with the other countries of the Lima Group to further all international pressure to isolate the illegitimate government of Maduro and that we can soon see a change in Venezuela to support the Venezuelan people.

And within this context we are trying to help better the peoples of Venezuela through humanitarian aid so that it will help them in overcoming the huge difficulties they have experienced recently that have been implemented by this illegitimate government of dictator Maduro which creates a political, social, and humanitarian crisis that has become even more serious because of the blackouts and lack of water in certain parts of the country. So here we too are allies in the region to defend democracy, human rights, because in Venezuela human rights are constantly being violated, as well as the freedoms. So we’re going to continue working under the scope of the Lima Group as well as with other countries to continue to isolate the illegitimate government of dictator Nicolas Maduro.

Once again, I would like to thank the Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for his visit to Peru and highlight the great level of relationships at bilateral level and the huge area in which we continue to build our relationships in trade, cooperation, and investment.

Thank you very much, Mike. Welcome to Peru.

MODERATOR: (Via interpreter) Next we are going to hear the remarks by the Secretary of State of the United States of America, Mr. Michael Pompeo.

SECRETARY POMPEO: Buenos tardes. It is terrific to be here in Lima’s historic city center, a stone’s throw from the house where Ricardo Palma, the great historian and short story writer, was born. It is a beautiful place. It is an honor for me to be here.

Thank you to the Peruvian people for hosting me. This is the first time I’ve had the chance to come here as Secretary of State. Sorry that it took me so long to get here.

Now, today I had the privilege to meet with President Vizcarra as well as my foreign minister counterpart, Popolizio, to talk about the areas of cooperation between our two countries, and they are many. We had a very warm, productive discussion, and I know that we will continue to do so.

We, of course, covered the topic of Venezuela. Peru has felt firsthand the effects of the disastrous Nicolas Maduro and the pain that he has brought to the Venezuelan people. Peru has shown enormous leadership in responding to this challenge. They – the people of Peru – generously host almost three quarters of a million refugees from Venezuela. Now, they fled their home country to escape the breakdown of health services, the limited water supply, the bare bread shelves, rolling blackouts, and hyperinflation – part of the reason that the United States has provided more than $30 million in humanitarian aid to Peru, complementing your government’s efforts to provide protection to these Venezuelans. The United States commends Peru for its generosity, and we want to ensure that all – we want to ensure all Peruvians that you are not shouldering this burden alone. The international community – including, of course, the United States – stands with you.

I would also like to thank my Peruvian counterparts for their work in the Lima Group and at the UN Security Council to support Juan Guaido as the leader of the interim government during this very difficult time of transition. The United States is pleased to support this week Peru’s hosting of the health ministerial this month that will focus on improving healthcare coordination among nations that are hosting large numbers of displaced Venezuelans.

Despite the gravity of the situation in Venezuela, it did not monopolize our discussions. We talked about many things. We talked, for example, about how Peru has been fighting public corruption as one of its top priorities. We saw this commitment last year during the Summit of the Americas and the signing of the Lima commitment.

Too often, we see China’s predatory lending and debt diplomacy reverse positive advances in this area. Our shared goal, our shared goal to be to resist Chinese overtures and promote transparency.

President Vizcarra deserves high praise for creating a government entity exclusively focused on safeguarding public integrity. The Peruvian Government also now requires that high-level officials report conflicts of interest. These are steps in exactly the right direction.

On a separate front, Peru has also been relentless in the fight against the production and distribution of narcotics. Last year, the Peruvian National Police and Military eradicated more than 25,000 hectares of illicit coca crops, surpassing their annual goal, seized more than 55 metric tons of illicit substances, and destroyed more than 350 drug laboratories. The United States applauds these steps by Peruvian authorities and encourages Peru to go even further.

Finally, when it comes to trade, the United States and Peru continue to reach even greater heights. As the foreign minister said, this year marks the 10th anniversary of our bilateral trade partnership agreement – trade promotion agreement, which eliminated tariffs that were hindering each of our respective economies. Since the agreement came into effect in 2009, trade between the United States and Peru has virtually doubled. In the days ahead, we look forward to spurring additional private investment under our America Crece Initiative.

In closing, I want to thank the Peruvian Government and the people of Peru for their fine hospitality. I can’t wait to see what else is in store for our great nation in these areas and more as we move forward together. Thank you.

MODERATOR: (Via interpreter) Next, there are two media that will ask questions to the Secretary of State and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Peru. The first question will be asked by Mr. Carlos Alfredo Viguria Chavez from Newspaper 21.

QUESTION: (Via interpreter) Good afternoon, Mr. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. My question is more addressed on the current status of the extradition process of former President Alejandro Toledo. Where does it stand? And this process has been in place for several years now in your country, and has this been discussed in your meeting with President Vizcarra, considering that last year the fight against corruption was addressed in the Summit of the Americas? Thank you very much.

SECRETARY POMPEO: I appreciate the question. When it comes to judicial processes in our country, I can’t say much. We’ve discussed this. We know the priority your country places on this.

MODERATOR: (Via interpreter) The second question, John Hudson from The Washington Post.

QUESTION: Thanks very much, gentlemen.

For Foreign Minister Popolizio, what if this Western campaign that is joined by many allies around the world of economic sanctions against Maduro begins exacerbating the humanitarian crisis and creating more refugees in Peru? Will your country consider changing strategies and other diplomatic tactics, potentially engaging with Maduro, or are you set in the policy and confident of the way forward?

And Secretary Pompeo, as you just stated, Peru has carried the burden of hundreds of thousands of refugees from Venezuela, and so have other countries on your visit. At the same time, President Trump has been urging countries to block migrants from crossing borders and even suggested dropping illegal migrants in the districts of domestic political opponents. What’s your message about how countries should be treating refugees and migrants in Latin America? Should they follow President Trump’s lead?

And just lastly, following the summit in Hanoi, you and Ambassador Bolton were specifically called out in a colorful statement by the North Korean diplomat, saying you created hostility in the summit. If there is a third summit, do you expect to change tactics or demeanor in any way? Thank you.

FOREIGN MINISTER POPOLIZIO: (Via interpreter) Thank you very much for the first question you have addressed. I have to emphasize that Peru, under the Lima Group as well as the OAS and the Security Council, has made a number of activities that focus on supplementing the measures that the United States and other countries of the European Union have already taken in economic terms, financial terms, in order to isolate the illegitimate government of Maduro.

That framework that we have in place will continue to be deepened. On Monday, we have a meeting in Santiago, Chile of the Lima Group. We are going to highlight the importance of working more intensively within the OAS. You have seen a key change in the OAS. Today, the OAS has a representative of Juan Guaido sitting in the desk of Venezuela. This is a significant change. We’re going to continue working so that we continue to press the regime, not only the Maduro regime but also the military group that is supporting him, so that we may continue with this international pressure together with the domestic pressure of the Venezuelan people that’s out on the street so that we can help them to recover democracy as soon as possible.

As for the second part of your question, this is related to the exodus of a magnitude that has never been seen before in Latin America. Since 2015, over 3 million – 3.5 million – Venezuelans have left to different countries, other countries. In the case of South America, there are two countries that have received the most of them are Colombia and Peru. In the case of Peru, we have received about 750,000 Venezuelans that have arrived to our country and all in all have a strong impact in the labor market, in the health system, in the education system, that has made us take a number of initiatives not only within the Andean community but also within the region and at a multilateral level so that all the countries know that this is an issue that is not regional exclusively but world, and all of us have to come together so that the host countries of Venezuelan migrants may have greater cooperation so that they can properly serve this migration that has never been seen before. We’re going to continue working with these subjects within the OAS, the Group of Lima, and the Security Council of the United Nations.

SECRETARY POMPEO: So I want to echo what the foreign minister just said. Your question showed an incredible lack of understanding to have suggested that somehow the policies that Peru has taken or that the Lima Group has taken or that the United States has taken have driven these refugees. You shouldn’t ask questions like that. The responsibility for these refugees lies squarely with Nicolas Maduro, not any policies that any democratic nation has taken with our deep intent to make lives better for the Venezuelan people. A hundred percent of the refugee challenge that is faced by Peru and Colombia is the direct result of the Russians, the Cubans, and Nicolas Maduro.

Second, you asked about how the American policy with respect to immigration is consistent. We in each case have exactly the same objective. Our objective is to allow people to stay in their home countries. This is President Trump’s desire. We want to create conditions in these countries where they can stay in their own country and they don’t have the need to migrate somewhere else from Venezuela.

It is our deep hope that we can achieve our objectives quickly, timely, so that these individuals will return to their home countries. It’s what they want. I think it’s what the people of Peru and Colombia and the other countries that are graciously, generously hosting and educating these people today. We want to create the conditions in every country so this migration, these refugees, don’t need to travel to these places.

And with respect to North Korea, we made real progress in Hanoi. I am confident that the leadership in America will continue to make progress to solve this challenge of the nuclear threat that is posed to the world. There remain in place today the world’s strongest sanctions, UN Security Council resolutions which make clear the objective: the denuclearization of North Korea. I am very confident we’ll continue to move down the path of achieving that outcome.

So thank you very much for your questions.

MODERATOR: (Via interpreter.) Ladies and gentlemen, the press conference has come to an end. We would like to thank the media for being here today. Thank you very much.

Makerspace for Little or Nothing
You don't have to spend thousands of dollars to start a Makerspace area. You don't have to have a designated room or rip out bookcases. You can even have a Makerspace on a cart! When we have testing in our Library, I put all our Makerspace stuff on an AV cart and roll it into our server room.  This post evolved from a previous post called Makerspace Starter Kit Updated where I had some of these idea, but I felt that it deserved it's own expanded post.

You can take baby steps into the Maker Movement.  I've been saying that for 7 years or so....long before I blogged about it, I tried it out. Yeah, sometimes I try things on the sly to see if they are blogworthy for you! Now....having said that.....

WARNING: Controversial Opinion Ahead.
I'm not 100% sold, even after 7 years of talking about the Maker Movement, that it's something that's here to stay and not just a fad. Even though I've (without knowing it!) been using aspects of the movement since we opened our school in 1997, what if it's a flash in the pan? Back then we used Hollywood High, Specular Logo Motion, Hyper Studio, and we created a daily LIVE TV Studio news show!  But what if we spend thousands of dollars on 3D printers, robotics, and other ephemera and it just ends up collecting dust? What if we DO make huge architectural changes in our schools and we can't go back? What if it's like the $10,000 interactive SMART boards that are now just used as white boards? That's why I've intentionally NOT spent a lot of money on our Maker corner. This post is about creating a Makerspace with little or no money.

A Makerspace is what you make of it! Big or small, lavish or little, it's all about the maker mindset.  Be creative! Be crafty! Ask your kids what they want and brainstorm how to bring it to the school! Ask for donations. Ask for help. Don't worry if it's not perfect at first or if you fail.

TP & Paper Towel Building Blocks
Collect toilet and paper towel rolls, heck - have the whole school collect them! Say you're trying for 50 or 100 - put a decorated cardboard box outside your Library or Classroom for donations!

Make sure to Tweet, IG out, or add the request to your staff & community newsletter! But be careful, you could get an AVALANCHE of materials!

Then cut them into different lengths, have the kiddos paint them with water based paints and notch them with scissors -- then let kids build with them! Store them in milk crates or bins. Voila!

I've heard lately, that some people don't like this idea because they're concerned about germs. I guess TP rolls & airborne germs? I'm kind of a germophobe, and I didn't even think about that! Sheesh. How about lightly spraying all the cardboard rolls with Lysol? about using paper towel rolls cut into different lengths?  More! Cardboard Tube STEM Activities and more!  This is a Mommy blog that has lots of great STEM ideas! W00t!
Origami Makerspace Pinterest Board.
Gather some origami books (I have like at least 10) paper of all kinds, safety scissors, and Voila! Kids love folding paper and even though I'm not patient enough to do this myself, many of my kiddos are amazing at Origami!

Great Introductory Origami Projects:

LEGOS for Nothing.

Here's Sam, who generously donated these LEGO pieces!

Here's the super cool Cassius, who does smile, I swear! Giving us like two big tubs of great LEGO pieces! Such a great kid, this one!

My lovely wonderful Library Media assistant took them home over the weekend and put them all in a bucket with a bleach solution & dried them in the sunshine. Voila! Just like new!

Ask your PTA, ask your kids, have a LEGO donation bucket by the door of your Library Media Center or classroom and check out yard sales and thrift shops. Bleach is amazing and cheap. Go for it!

Now... I've totally snagged some amazing ideas from MY Makerspace Guru, Diana Rendina!

Cardboard Creature Challenge
Now, shamelessly stolen  from my Makerspace Gur, Diana Rendina - Teasing Excerpts from the amazing article she wrote for Demco titled  3 Design Challenges for the Low-tech Makerspace  (Link below - I promise! Just don't want to lose you quite yet, you may never come back!;-)

"The Cardboard Challenge has long been one of my favorite makerspace activities. Inspired by the amazing short film Caine’s Arcade and the Imagination Foundation’s Global Cardboard Challenge (October 6th - Join in!), I create a new variation on this challenge every year. We’ve created cardboard arcades, robots, buildings, etc." -- Read the article for more!

Tech Take-Apart Robot Challenge
Tech take-apart is a classic makerspace activity. This design challenge takes it a step further by recycling the technology into a robot made by students. This project doesn’t have to be super complex — picture a shoebox painted with black paint that has keyboard keys and circuit boards glued to it. (link below - I promise!)

Recycled Book Art Gallery
Our Art Teacher does this and we always love to provide gallery and brainstorming space! Maybe she gets some of our weeded books OR maybe she uses donated books from the kids and
MHMS Upcycled Book Art Gallery Walk from my IG
the community. I can't speak to that here... my supervisor might see this! Here's what Diana has to say about this!

"We all have damaged or out-of-date books that we’ve weeded from our library. Instead of tossing them out, why not transform them into recycled art? Browse Pinterest or check out some of the recommended resources below to gather inspiration for students. Provide students with a variety of arts and crafts supplies, including glue, tape, paint, scissors, glitter, etc. Teach the students about what an artist’s statement is, and have them write one up once their project is done. Then create a gallery of all the students’ projects in the library and invite classes to visit for a gallery walk. This is a great way to introduce students to the world of professional art and a fantastic way to recognize their work.  Design prompt: Working alone or in pairs, transform a used book into a work of art. You can use any arts and crafts materials, including paint, scissors, glue, tape, etc. Write an artist’s statement explaining how you came up with your idea and how you created your art. You will have one week to complete the project. All of the book art will be displayed with artists’ statements in a gallery in the library. "

Or just search her blog for all her posts on the Maker Movement and be sure to follow her on Twitter! Diana Rendina (@DianaLRendina)

Don't forget that video production, animation, green screen, blue screen, TV studio, coding, programming, any collaborating with Tech Ed or a Science class and so many other amazing things can make your school Makerspace program shine! Make sure to bring in other subject areas. Make your Library a great space to display artwork. I'm a big advocate of STEAM rather than STEM. Think about gallery openings and gallery walks!
Do NOT let the expense, mess, trouble, or obstacles stop you from doing this!  Be the innovator and the spark in your school or district.  I know you can be AWESOME!

Honestly, this last part was in a previous blog called Makersapce Starter Kit Decoded. But, I thought that it's a really important conversation for any Maker project. What do you think are the essential conversations?

Interview with UMass WR Andy Isabella      Comment   Translate Page
UMass WR Andy Isabella took time out of his preparation for the 2019 NFL Draft to talk with Connor Livesay. When Sports Talk Line's NFL Draft expert Connor Livesay first wrote about this prospect he had this to say: "Andy Isabella showcases great short area quickness and route running ability in all three levels of the field. Isabella is not just your typical slot receiver that runs the short routes underneath" - Connor Livesay That is the type of hyperbole you want to hear if your team has a keen eye for the UMass talent.  Connor Livesay allows us to get some insight into what makes Isabella special and how he motivates himself. "I'm still mad about it, to be honest ... " – WR Andy Isabella on NFL Combine 40 yd dash clocks messing up his time Connor and Andy start with the NFL Combine and the SNAFU that messed up his 40 yd dash time. However this is Andy Isabella, he may use something for motivation but he isn't going to dwell on it. There is a lot going on in this young man's life as he gears up for the NFL Draft and his entry into the world of elite athletic competition.  "They are going to get a guy that is going to show up every day .... and whatever the team wants for him to do, he is going to do it." - Andy Isabella on what an NFL team will get when they take him in the NFL Draft. Livesay keeps it real, puts things in perspective and gives you an “up close” picture of a “top NFL Draft Prospect” for 2019.
