Presidential Moral Leadership Really Matters      Comment   Translate Page

Maybe it’s because my family is dominated by academics, but I’m fortunate not to have any close or even remote relations that watch Fox News or regurgitate the network’s toxic talking points. A lot of people aren’t so fortunate. Luke O’Neil has collected a bunch of sob stories for a piece in the Guardian. Here’s a typical example:

I don’t watch Fox News because of course it warps your psyche, but it must have changed tone after Trump was elected. My dad slowly became even more xenophobic and angry than he used to be.

My wife and I are worried about letting our daughter stay with our respective parents, because their toxic anger and resentment is slowly becoming their entire identity. I hate what Fox News has done to almost everyone in my family. It’s absolute poison and the only thing I think is worse is that there are people who think that destroying the morals and conscience of multiple generations is worth a few more bucks. I absolutely refuse to believe that people like Hannity don’t know what they are doing.

I wish I could do something, but who has the time or energy to combat that?

This hits on a theme I often discuss, which is the destruction of people’s morals and conscience. As things have taken a darker and darker turn in our country, and really throughout the world, in the last two decades, I’ve come to see moral leadership as more and more important. I don’t think human beings are basically good or fundamentally bad, but they’re highly malleable. How they behave, even what they feel, can be influenced by whether they’re asked to be generous or resentful, welcoming or defensive, optimistic or angry.

Fox News definitely seeks to make many “bucks” by catering to people’s worst instincts, and it actually transforms people. It makes people fearful and furious. A liberal who spends all day watching MSNBC will have reasons to be anxious and upset, too, but they’ll also be receiving constant messages about the value of tolerance, inclusiveness, and care for the vulnerable. For the most part, the moral instruction is consistent with what you might hear Pope Francis say about the poor and with Martin Luther King Jr.’s aspiration that we judge people by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin.

Fox News has such a broad reach in our culture that it is measurably damaging people’s morals and conscience. It’s turning good people into bad people, much the way that civil or sectarian conflicts harden populations against each other, sometimes for centuries. But it’s still just a news outlet. It’s influence is nothing compared to the influence of Donald Trump who has transformed one of American’s two major political parties into smoldering heap of dung.

I sometimes rolled my eyes when President Obama exhorted us with moral language and insisted that America was fundamentally good, and far better than how it was presenting itself. But, just by making that effort, he incrementally made us better people. Sometimes we are blessed with the right leaders at the right time, and sometimes we seem to be plagued by poor leadership. Right now, the West seems to be lacking competent leaders, and it’s having a crippling effect here at home and also in Europe. But we’re also suffering from outright bad moral leadership in some cases.

I began my adult life as a secular-minded philosophy student, impatient with moral arguments and suspicious of leaders who spoke in moral terms. My initial problem with the Bush administration was that their reckless disregard for the truth prevented people from having reality-based conversations. I no longer see this as the primary threat we face. What I see now is a daily devolution of the basic goodness and generosity of our people. Every day this gets worse, the path back gets longer, and the prospect of societal breakdown grows.

Our next president will hopefully bring as much of the country together as possible, but what they absolutely must do is exert moral leadership to stem and reverse this tide. If they can.

Report: Former top Clinton aide running 'dark money' campaign to get Brett Kavanaugh fired from teaching job      Comment   Translate Page

Hillary Clinton's former campaign spokesman is leading a "dark money" campaign to get Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh fired from his summer teaching job at George Mason University, according to a new report.

What are the details?

Fox News reported that Brian Fallon, who served as Clinton's 2016 national spokesman, is backing an effort to prevent Kavanaugh from teaching for the university this summer. Fallon leads Demand Justice, a progressive advocacy group that does not disclose its funding.

The effort, which has been dubbed "Mason 4 Survivors," is circulating a petition that has so far garnered more than 5,000 signatures. The group is urging George Mason president Angel Cabrera to "terminate AND void ALL contracts and affiliation with Brett Kavanaugh at George Mason University."

"There is a historic amount of institutional negligence on your part to support survivors of sexual assault and the student body as a whole, which has bred a sense of mistrust and suffering within the Mason community and allies," the petition claims.

According to HuffPost, Fallon's group is running a Facebook advertisement campaign that targets anyone connected with George Mason University urging them to sign the petition. The ad also directs targeted users to sign a separate petition that calls on Congress to investigate Kavanaugh.

Though sexual misconduct allegations surfaced against Kavanaugh during his Supreme Court confirmation process last, none of the accusations ever proved credible.

What's the background?

It was announced last month that Kavanaugh would join George Mason University's Antonin Scalia Law School as a distinguished visiting professor. He is set to co-teach a two-credit course this summer in England called "Creation of the Constitution."

Kavanaugh's appointment was met with immediate pushback and protests.

Fortunately, Cabrera has defended Kavanaugh's appointment, saying in a statement last month that the university will not revoke Kavanaugh's appointment.

"I respect the views of people who disagreed with Justice Kavanaugh's Senate confirmation due to questions raised about his sexual conduct in high school. But he was confirmed and is now a sitting Justice," Cabrera said. "The law school has determined that the involvement of a U.S. Supreme Court Justice contributes to making our law program uniquely valuable for our students."

New York Press Club to honor CNN's Jim Acosta with 'Truth to Power' award      Comment   Translate Page

CNN's Jim Acosta was family booted from the White House press corps, and almost as famously returned to it, after fighting for the microphone and refusing to stop talking when he was directing remarks to President Trump last year.

The hallmark of Acosta's reporting, and indeed career, is as a person who battles Trump from the left, rather than as a reporter or uncoverer of truth in his own right.

Acosta's style - a sort of preachy monologue as opposed to traditional question and answer - doesn't sit will with a lot of conservative viewers, and he's faced a good deal of criticism over it, especially at Trump's rallies.

It is presumably on those grounds, his provocateur milieu, on which the New York Press club has decided to award him their "Truth to Power" award at their upcoming awards dinner.

For a refresher in how Acosta's job as Trump foil has sky-rocketed his career, you can do worse than to read this explainer from last year at the Daily Wire. But if you want a more recent example, Glenn Beck's biting commentary here is a must.

In the press release announcing his selection, the NYPC said the purpose of the award, which is named for journalist Gabe Pressman, is designed to honor ""an individual whose body of work challenges the power establishment and/or defends journalists."

Perhaps it is meant specifically with regard to the incident with the White House revoking his credentials, against which Fox News joined all the other press organizations in protest, as opposed to his more general job of simply launching social-media quality liberal talking points at any conservative or republican unfortunate enough to be in front of his mic.

Bernie's 'Medicare-for-All' plan includes paying for illegal immigrants      Comment   Translate Page

Democratic socialist Bernie Sanders is right in line with the current liberal zeitgeist - in fact he says he was there first, and therefore is excused from being a white male - and his Medicare for All plan is being endorsed and embraced by his competition for the 2020 Democrat nomination.

As Fox News reported, that plan isn't just about no American paying for healthcare, or even nose jobs, it's about people who are not Americans, too. As in, people who are here illegally.

You see, rather than covering "citizens", the legislation Sanders unveiled this week would cover all "residents" in the United States. As Fox notes, that's "a shift from the Affordable Care Act, which limited benefits to citizens, nationals and "lawfully present" immigrants. The House bill also prohibits the government from denying benefits because of "citizenship status."

More than that, as the Washington Examiner pointed out on Friday, it even aspires to cover those who can't meet the loose definition of resident. "Even if an individual is not covered under a broad definition of 'residency' by the secretary of HHS, the federal government can take steps 'to ensure that every person in the United States has access to health care.'"

On Fox News on Saturday, Peter Doocy reported on the Medicare for all proposal, and if you listen, you can actually hear money burning. Watch:

Pompeo labels Iran's Qassem Soleimani as 'equivalent' to ISIS leader Baghdadi      Comment   Translate Page
During remarks early this week in a Fox News interview following Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) being formally designated by the United States as a foreign terrorist organization, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo confirmed that the US will view Iran's elite force just as it does ISIS. Specifically Pompeo agreed that the commander of Iran's elite Quds Force, Maj Gen Qassem Soleimani, is a "terrorist" on the level of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi during a Fox News interview on Monday. Fox's Bret Baier posed the question to the Secretary of State: "The head of the IRGC, this man Qasem Soleimani, is by all accounts a bad character and has led all kinds of attacks. But are you saying that he now is equated to, let's say, the head of ISIS, al-Baghdadi, in U.S. policy perspective?" Responding to whether Suleimani is now "equated" to notorious "caliphate head" Baghdadi, Pompeo affirmed, "Yeah. He is a terrorist."

China, Russia "Spread Disorder" And "Corruption" In Latin America: Pompeo      Comment   Translate Page

Speaking Friday in Chile upon the start of his three-day South American tour, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called out China and Russia for spreading "disorder" in Latin America through failing investment projects that only fuel corruption and undermine democracy, especially in places like Venezuela.

According to Bloomberg, Pompeo specifically listed a failing dam project in Ecuador, police advisory programs in Nicaragua, and Chinese loans to the Maduro government, which goes further back to Chavez.

Pompeo with Chilean President Sebastian Pinera, via Reuters

Pompeo asserted Chinese loans in Latin America “often injects corrosive capital into the economic bloodstream, giving life to corruption, and eroding good governance.” Both Beijing and Moscow have ultimately spread their economic tentacles into the region to “spread disorder,” he added.

In what appears an effort to sustain momentum toward pressuring regime change in Caracas, America's highest diplomat met Chilean President Sebastian Pinera earlier Friday, and will hit Paraguay, Peru next, and finally on Sunday will travel to a Colombian town on the border with Venezuela.

Pompeo and Piñera also generally discussed the U.S.-China trade war and Beijing's “Belt and Road” initiative, with Pompeo suggesting he was optimistic about solving the tariff war with China. But the focus remained finding a US-desired outcome to the Venezuela crisis.

According to Bloomberg

As part of the broader pressure campaign on Maduro, Pompeo said the U.S. has revoked visas for 718 people and sanctioned over 150 individuals and entities. On Friday, the U.S. sanctioned four companies it says transport much of the 50,000 barrels of oil that Venezuela provides to Cuba each day.

Late last month Pompeo had even more directly addressed Moscow, calling on Russia to “cease its unconstructive behavior” after it deployed a small troop contingency to Caracas to service existing military equipment contracts. Notably, Venezuela also has Russia's S-300 air defense missile system, which over the past month have been reported deployed to a key airbase south of the capital of Caracas.

And in February Pompeo claimed in an interview with Fox News that "Hezbollah has active cells in Venezuela" — an assertion that has seemed to disappear from the spotlight of late.

China, for its part, has proactively offered to help Venezuela with its failing power grid, after a series of devastating mass outages over the past month has resulted in "medieval" conditions amidst an already collapsing infrastructure. Beijing also recently denied it has deployed troops to Venezuela after media reports a week ago cited online photos which appeared to show a Chinese military transport plane deployed to Caracas.

Spirit-Filled New York City Pastor: 'We Shouldn't Preach Hell Without Tears in Our Eyes'      Comment   Translate Page

This week on an episode of Fox and Friends, Pastor Ron Lewis of Every Nation Church in New York City said that pastors need to be true to their convictions instead of succumbing to fear and pressure when addressing hot-button cultural topics in the pulpit.

A new study by Barna Group, published in January, revealed that half of American pastors worry about preaching on cultural issues such as abortion, LGBTQ issues and the reality of hell simply because they might offend someone.

Lewis appeared on the Fox News show with Pastor Michael Youssef of Atlanta and Pastor Corey Brooks of Chicago.

"Because we are called of God to preach the gospel and to preach the counsel of God, we really need to be true to the Word of God and not cave into fear or the overt concern about offending people," Lewis told Dr. Steve Greene on a recent episode of "Greenelines" on the Charisma Podcast Network. "For example, the topic of hell. We need to go deeper in our theological understanding of hell.

"I know there is a movement today that would want to completely ignore hell. Obviously, universalism is growing in its popularity through certain teachers," Lewis said. "But, it's like one of the ancient men said, we shouldn't preach hell without tears in our eyes. If we really believe it, we should not be so cavalier with this. We don't want anyone to end up in hell, so we need not to be the stumbling block but let the Word of God itself penetrate the heart and also let us, as ambassadors for Christ, feel what God feels and see what He sees."

President Trump tweets video with partial Ilhan Omar quote and 9/11 footage      Comment   Translate Page

Several 2020 Democratic hopefuls and other prominent Democrats criticized President Trump after he tweeted a video showing part of Rep. Ilhan Omar's recent comments about the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and television of the terrorist attacks. Several prominent conservatives and the New York Post have been using a partial quote from comments Omar made last month to accuse her of downplaying the terrorist attack.

President Trump tweeted on Friday that "WE WILL NEVER FORGET!" along with the video, which is of unknown origin. The video featured the Minnesota Democrat saying "CAIR was founded after 9/11 because they recognized some people did something" and then footage from the news, including CBS News and "60 Minutes," of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. It repeats "some people did something" throughout and then ends with the words "September 11, 2001 We Remember."

President Trump later pinned it to the top of his profile.

Shortly after the president's tweet, Sen. Elizabeth Warren responded by tweeting "The President is inciting violence against a sitting Congresswoman—and an entire group of Americans based on their religion. It's disgusting. It's shameful. And any elected leader who refuses to condemn it shares responsibility for it."

Sen. Bernie Sanders tweeted "Ilhan Omar is a leader with strength and courage. She won't back down to Trump's racism and hate, and neither will we. The disgusting and dangerous attacks against her must end."

Other prominent Democrats, including fellow 2020 Democratic hopefuls Jay Inslee and Julian Castro, also criticized President Trump. Former U.S. Rep. Beto O'Rourke did not mention Omar by name but tweeted "we are stronger than this president's hatred and Islamophobia." South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg, who is a veteran, tweeted a thread that said "today the president made America smaller" and "the threats against the life of @IlhanMN make clear what is at stake if we fail to to do this, and to beat back hate in all all its forms."

Chelsea Clinton tweeted President Trump's "hate-filled days" including his "targets" on Omar.

On March 23, Omar, who is Somali-American and wears a hijab, said at a Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) banquet that the organization was formed after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks to protect civil rights. "Far too long we have lived with the discomfort of being a second-class citizen, and frankly, I'm tired of it, and every single Muslim in this country should be tired of it," Omar said at the event. "CAIR was founded after 9/11 because they recognized that some people did something and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties."

The part of the quote "some people did something" has resurfaced this week, particularly among conservatives. Texas Republican U.S. Rep. Dan Crenshaw tweeted a 19-second clip of her comments, calling them "unbelievable." After Omar responded that it was a "dangerous incitement, given the death threats I face," Crenshaw tweeted he did not "incite violence against" her. "You described an act of terrorism on American soil that killed thousands of innocent lives as 'some people did something,'" he also wrote.

The clip was also played on conservative media. On "Fox & Friends" on Wednesday, host Brian Kilmeade said, "you have to wonder if she is an American first."

"As a Muslim-American, you should be more outraged because they sullied your religion," Kilmeade said of Omar during his morning broadcast. "In the name of religion they killed Americans and still do it on a daily basis."

After being criticized, Kilmeade tweeted that he "didn't intend to question" if Omar is an American. "I am questioning how any American, let alone a United States Congresswoman, could downplay the 9/11 attacks," Kilmeade wrote.

And Thursday's cover of the New York Post featured a partial quote from Omar, "some people did something" on Sept. 11 and showed a photo of the Twin Towers after the planes hit. The main headline read: "Here's your something ... 2,977 people dead by terrorism."

Some Democrats on Capitol Hill have also been defending Omar, including U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasico-Cortez, who tweeted on Friday that "members of Congress have a duty to respond to the President's explicit attack today" and Omar's life is in danger. She included a photo of the poem "First they came" from the U.S. Holocaust Museum.

A New York man was arrested earlier this month calling Omar's Capitol Hill office and saying, "Do you work for the Muslim Brotherhood? Why are you working for her, she's a (expletive) terrorist. I'll put a bullet in her (expletive) skull," according to the criminal complaint.

And in March, a West Virginia GOP event featured an anti-Muslim poster of Omar linking her to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The poster included a picture of planes flying into the World Trade Center with the phrase, "never forget, you said," and then under it, a picture of Omar with the words, "I am proof you have forgotten."

Omar tweeted about the poster: "No wonder why I am on the 'Hitlist' of a domestic terrorist and 'Assassinate Ilhan Omar' is written on my local gas stations."

Omar, who was elected in November, has become one of the most high-profile lightning rods in Congress. She apologized after comments she made about Israel and Israeli lobbyists AIPAC were considered by some to be anti-Semitic. She said on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" on Wednesday she is still "learning" about the weight of some comments.

"As I've said to my constituents and my colleagues, when you tell me that you are pained by something I say, I will always listen and I will acknowledge your pain," Omar said.

In March, Fox News host Jeanine Pirro questioned whether Omar's wearing a hijab indicated her adherence to Sharia law and alleged that it violated the Constitution. Fox News issued a statement saying it "strongly condemned" Pirro's remarks and her show did not air for two weeks.

The Nunes and Barr tag team

by digby

If Barr agrees to conspire with Nunes over this bullshit we will know that no Trump critic or ethical law enforcement employee is safe. Nunes is acting as an agent of President Trump to use the power of the Attorney General to obstruct oversight and punish critics.

House Democrats are crying foul over a plan by the Intelligence Committee's top Republican, Rep. Devin Nunes, to meet privately with Attorney General William Barr to push the Justice Department to pursue criminal charges against officials involved in the investigation of President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign and Russia.

Nunes’ accusations of misconduct are aimed at a slew of former FBI and Justice Department officials, who he alleges committed crimes in their pursuit of allegations that President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign conspired with Russians to influence the election.

Nunes has in recent days foreshadowed plans to send eight "criminal referrals" — informal requests for the Justice Department to investigate — directly to Barr. He said on Sean Hannity's Fox News show Thursday night that he intends to meet with Barr "when appropriate" to discuss the referrals, and plans to bring fellow GOP intelligence committee member John Ratcliffe, a former U.S. attorney, to the meeting. Nunes said he wouldn't name the targeted officials publicly but would share his recommendations with Barr.

Barr told lawmakers earlier this week that he was anticipating Nunes' information.

"I haven’t seen the referrals yet from Congressman Nunes," Barr said during testimony to the House Appropriations Committee on Tuesday, "but obviously if there’s a predicate for an investigation it’ll be conducted.”

Nunes' move is an escalation by Trump's allies in Congress to pivot from Mueller's still-unreleased findings to the conduct of the FBI and Justice Department investigators who initiated the Russia probe. Before seeing its contents, Nunes labeled Mueller's report a "partisan document" and said "we can just burn it up," even as most of Trump's supporters were celebrating the news — as described publicly by Barr — that Mueller "did not establish" a conspiracy between the campaign and the Russian government.

The Justice Department declined multiple inquiries about whether Barr intends to meet with Nunes and Ratcliffe. Nunes and Ratcliffe also declined requests for comment. Democrats says such a meeting would be a significant break from protocol unless they are also included.

“We expect to learn more if and when the Department of Justice receives the referrals, assuming the Department follows appropriate protocol and Barr holds any such meeting only with representatives of the majority and minority present," said a Democratic aide to the House intelligence committee.

A decision by Barr to meet alone with Nunes and Ratcliffe would further strain Barr's relationship with Capitol Hill Democrats, who have ripped the new attorney general in recent weeks for what they say is his efforts to shield Trump from potentially damaging findings in Mueller's report, which Barr has been reviewing for nearly a month.

Their frustration was inflamed anew this week when Barr told the Senate Appropriations Committee that he believed federal authorities spied on Trump's campaign in 2016, a disputed premise that supported Trump's inflammatory rhetoric about the Russia probe.

The intelligence committee aide emphasized that Nunes had yet to share any details of his referrals with Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) or other members of the Democratic majority.

"[B]ut it is clear they believe they now have an ally in the attorney general to perpetuate their conspiracy theories of ‘spying’ and their determination to investigate the investigators, no matter how misguided and damaging their efforts are to our national institutions, or the dedicated public servants who work to keep us safe," the aide said.

A senior House Democratic aide said Barr "must refuse the meeting and start down a path of redeeming his credibility," especially as he prepares to issue a redacted version of Mueller's final report.

I don't think he's actually redeemable at this point. It would take something extraordinary that he's shown no sign of having the desire or the courage to do. But if he sits down alone with Nunes and his hand-picked former USA wingnut to "go over" the "charges" he's completely gone and it will take an insurrection from the DOJ to save the institution.

I won't hold my breath. After all, Trump is now offering pardons to government officials if they'll break the law for him and instructing rank and file law enforcement to defy the courts. Barr is happily running interference for him, telling the public that he's going to use his power to investigate anyone who investigates the president and making it very, very clear that he believes if the president does it it isn't illegal.

NEW YORK: Freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s name is on the lips of nearly everyone at Fox News.
A study found that the New York City Democrat was mentioned 3,181 times on Fox News Channel and its sister Fox Business Network during the six-week period of Feb. 25 to April 7, or just under 76 times a day. Not a day went by when she wasn’t spoken about on Fox.

When a hyper-partisan propagandist wildly exaggerates a Saudi investor's stake in "Fox,News", that's something worth pointing out . I would try to explain the difference to Hollywood Hill between 6,% and 40%; but most would understand that difference. So St. Peter made a wildly exaggerated claim and it was pointed out to him that he was WAY , WAY, off the mark. In doing so, St. Peter now claims that I'm "dismissive" of the Saudi prince because I caught and challenge that wild exaggeration. That's one part of his game; three was a reason in the first place for falsely claiming using that 40% number. Fox😳🤪 is backed by an Saudi, a Saudi .....yes, SAUDI😯has a huge (claimed) 40 % interest in Fox News, and the all-powerful, unholy Murdoch- Saudi- Fox News alliance is therefore exposed by Peter "Scoop" Hill. The facts of the Saudi's business investments convered (mostly accurately) in various publications, and those facts are what they are. I'm not "dismissive" of those facts, not an inclined to accept a wildly inaccurate claim by a two-bit hack and propagandist like Hollywood Hill. Now we can argue about whether 6% is "not that far off" from 40%, or whatever other silly claim St. Peter now tries to make to squirm out of a blunders. I don't see the point in doing so, any more than there's any point in expecting anything other than a propganda mill from St. Peter's Holy Scriptures he posts here. Now if the diversion becomes "Murdoch's evil empire" that Hollywood Hill wants to pivot to, and Murdoch himself, then that could and should include a discussion .of the multi-billionaires acting as political activists, whether that's Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, Howard Scultz, George Soros etc. There's no point in wasting time playing that game on the field with the moved goalposts Hollywood Hill prefers, because any discussion of multi-billionares, political activities, media presence of the ultra wealthy will be exclusive about the Koch Bros. when Hollywood Hill moves the goalposts again and does what he's most comfortable doing....popagandizing.

Tom, I'm not scared of the prince. Nor do I fear his investments. But the fact that you seek to diminish him in such a dismissive manner suggests discomfort on your part. That's what I was getting at wondering if Fox News Viewers understood who Murdoch is. Do they know he shapes politics on three continents? And do Fox Viewers know Murdoch's longtime investment partner was really a Saudi Prince? I'm just wondering. There is irony, of course. Fox viewers live in fear of Sharia law. Which makes it all the sillier. Like a dark comedy.

Ilhan Omar has become the target of a dangerous hate campaignFox News, New York Post and Donald Trump are contributing to a climate of vigilantism that threatens every Muslim in America today Omar’s detractors misrepresent her words, accusing her of saying things she didn’t say or condemning her for things that have been said before, even by Republicans themselves. Photograph: Mandel Ngan/AFP/Getty Images Here’s a question for you. Which American politician publicly referred to the terrorists who carried out the 9/11 attacks as “those folks who committed this act,” seemingly downplaying its horrors? Was it Minnesota representative Ilhan Omar? No. Try George W Bush. Here’s another one. Which American politician publicly called Benjamin Netanyahu “your prime minister” while addressing a crowd of Jewish American supporters. Since the statement assumes Jewish Americans carry a dual loyalty to both Israel and the United States, you might assume it was Ilhan Omar, based on all we’ve been told about her. In fact, it was Donald Trump. Or how about this. Who said that “the Stephen Miller approach to immigration has no viability”, adding that “Mr Miller is well known…for having views that are outside the mainstream,” suggesting Miller is in reality a political extremist who doesn’t belong in government? Was it Ilhan Omar? Wrong again. It was the Republican Senator Lindsey Graham. Over and over again, Ilhan Omar’s detractors misrepresent her words and intentions, accusing her of saying things she didn’t say or condemning her for things that have been said before, even by Republicans themselves. But the attacks continue. That’s why you could be forgiven for thinking that Ilhan Omar, one of the first two Muslim women ever elected to Congress, has said these – or even much worse – things. By now, she is accused so often of various speech and thought crimes that she almost seems like a figure in the Two Minutes Hate, the daily ritual used to whip party members into a frenzy in George Orwell’s novel 1984. In Orwell’s dystopia, the enemy of the people was the very Jewish-sounding Emmanuel Goldstein. If you believe some pundits, today’s enemy of the people is the very Muslim-looking Ilhan Omar. Think I’m exaggerating? Consider how Ronna McDaniel, the head of the Republican National Committee, recently labeled Omar as “anti-American” on Twitter. Or then there’s Fox News’s Brian Kilmeade, who questioned Omar’s loyalty, saying “You have to wonder if she’s an American first.” (Kilmeade has since walked back his statement a tad.) A few weeks earlier and also on Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News, Jeanine Pirro questioned not just Omar’s loyalty to her country but really any hijab-observing woman’s allegiance to the United States. “Omar wears a hijab,” Pirro said, accusingly. “Is her adherence to this Islamic doctrine indicative of her adherence to sharia law, which in itself is antithetical to the United States constitution?” The allegations are baseless, but the attacks continue. The latest manufactured outrage derives from a speech Omar gave last month to the Los Angeles branch of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. As the Washington Post noted, Omar’s 23 March speech was broadcast live (including on Fox News Online), but became controversial only days ago. In one phrase of her 20-minute talk, which was focused on Muslim Americans and civil rights, Omar says “some people did something” when referring to the September 11 attacks. It’s abundantly clear by the context of the talk that Omar was saying that the actions of a few have distressingly enabled the threat to the civil rights of so many. To allege that Omar was minimizing the horrors of September 11 is to deliberately misconstrue the point of her comments. But that didn’t stop the New York Post from accusing Omar of precisely that. The cover of the Murdoch-owned tabloid had a picture of the Twin Towers in flames with the words “Here’s your something. 2,977 people dead by terrorism” plastered across the page, as if Omar herself is responsible for those deaths. Appallingly, Donald Trump has now furthered the smear, tweeting a video linking Omar and the 9/11 attacks to his millions of followers. This near daily vilification of Omar and distortion of her positions is not just politically problematic. It’s also dangerous. In February, authorities arrested the United States coast guard Lieutenant Christopher Hasson, an alleged rightwing extremist who, reports say, had placed Omar (among others) on a hit list. The West Virginia Republican party was criticized last month after a poster was displayed in the capitol rotunda that also linked Omar with 9/11. And just last week, a man from western New York was arrested for allegedly threatening to kill the Minnesota congresswoman. In scoring their cheap political points, Fox News and the New York Post and the president of the United States himself are directly contributing to a perilous climate of vigilantism that threatens not only Omar but really every Muslim in America today. On one level, it’s clear why Omar is subject to these attacks. Omar is black, a woman, an immigrant, a refugee and a Muslim. The fact that racism, sexism and bigotry drive a double-standard where Omar faces criticism while others received little to no scrutiny for the same comments is self-evident. But that’s also not the full explanation. This double standard that is applied to Omar is meant to keep us from listening to what she is actually saying and doing. To call Stephen Miller a white nationalist, as Omar did, is to state an obvious truth. Omar added that “the fact that he still has influence on policy and political appointments is an outrage.” Rather than paying attention to her words, Omar was again caricatured as an anti-Semite. “Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has a well-documented history of antisemitic comments, social media posts and relationships,” the White House said, “so it’s not surprising that she would wildly attack a Jewish member of the administration.” In fact, we should be paying all kinds of attention to Omar’s words and actions. She is principled and outspoken against all types of human rights abuses, having criticized Saudi Arabia for its war in Yemen, spoken out against Chinese repression of the Uighur population, stood with the Sudanese people in their uprising, opposed American intervention in Venezuela, grilled Elliott Abrams about his atrocious human rights record, and more. She is a cosponsor of the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund, and has already introduced the Protect Against Unlawful Lobbying Act of 2019, and the Federal Worker Childcare Protection Act of 2019. Most recently, she cosponsored a bi-cameral bill to end Donald Trump’s Muslim ban. And she only began her job in January. It’s no wonder that so many people, some from her own party, want to shut Ilhan Omar up. She has a lot to say and she says it. I for one will be listening closely.           Bergman Blasts EU's Collusion With Iran      Comment   Translate Page

Authored by Judith Bergman via The Gatestone Institute,

On January 31, Britain, France and Germany announced a new payment mechanism known as the Instrument in Support of Trade Exchanges (INSTEX). It was designed to preserve the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iran nuclear deal, after the US left the deal in May 2018 and reinstated -- as well as broadened -- US sanctions on the country in November 2018. The main purpose of INSTEX is to ensure that Europe -- and potentially third countries – can continue doing business with the mullahs in Iran without risking US penalties for contravening US sanctions.

"INSTEX will support legitimate European trade with Iran, focusing initially on the sectors most essential to the Iranian population -- such as pharmaceutical, medical devices and agri-food goods," the foreign ministers of Britain, Germany and France said in a joint statement. In the longer term, INSTEX aims to be open to other countries wanting to trade with Iran, the statement said. Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission, said INSTEX was "essential for the continued full implementation of the nuclear deal".

Mogherini seems strongly committed to ensuring that Iran -- and Europe -- continue receiving economic benefits from the illegal, unsigned, and unratifiedIran deal. "Alongside Iran's implementation, the lifting of nuclear-related sanctions is an essential part of the deal so we will continue to work to preserve the economic dividends of sanctions lifting," Mogherini said recently. "Our collective security requires a solid multilateral architecture for non-proliferation and disarmament. This is why the European Union will continue to work to preserve the nuclear deal with Iran," added Mogherini who insisted that Iran is complying with the JCPOA.

The European Union insists that Iran is complying with the nuclear deal (JCPOA). It is not. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, referring to documents seized by Israel, stated that the nuclear deal was "built on lies."(Photo by Win McNamee/Getty Images)

It is not.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, referring to documents seized by Israel, stated that the nuclear deal was "built on lies." In addition, the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, Ali Akbar Salehi, in a recent interview with Iran's state-owned Channel 2, made it clear that the flimsy "nuclear deal", initiated by then-US President Barack Obama, has done nothing to stop Iran from making advances in its nuclear program, according to Iran expert Dr. Majid Rafizadeh. "[T]he latest reports on Iran's nuclear progress," Rafizadeh wrote, "also indicatethat Iran is on the threshold of modernizing its mechanism for producing highly enriched uranium, which can be utilized to build a nuclear weapon".

EU member states such as France, Germany and the UK continue to claim that Iran is complying with its agreements: these countries evidently want to continue doing business with the mullahs. Official figures by Germany's Federal Statistics Office revealed that German exports to Iran grew by 4% to 2.4 billion euros in the first 10 months of 2018, and monthly export volumes are expected to average 200 million to 250 million euros a month in 2019. In October 2018, German goods exported to Iran totaled almost 400 million euros ($455 million), representing a surge of 85% from the previous October and the highest monthly volume since 2009, according to Reuters.

A German intelligence report also noted that, "Iran has continued unchanged the pursuit of its ambitious program to acquire technology for its rocket and missile delivery program." Much of that activity has evidently taken place in Germany: Iran's efforts to develop its nuclear and missile programs resulted in "32 procurement attempts... that definitely or with high likelihood were undertaken for the benefit of proliferation programs," in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Fox News reported in 2017.

Germany is now refusing even to disclose Iranian attempts to obtain nuclear weapons and missile technology, and claiming that it no longer keeps such statistics, Fox News recently reported.

If Iranian attempts to attain nuclear weapons leave major EU powers undeterred from doing business with Iran, what then about Iran's atrocious human rights record? Europe, after all, likes to boast that it is committed to human rights. "The European Union," the EU professes, "is based on a strong commitment to promoting and protecting human rights... Human rights are at the heart of EU relations with other countries... EU policy includes:

  • promoting the rights of women, children, minorities and displaced persons

  • opposing the death penalty, torture, human trafficking and discrimination

  • defending civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights

  • defending human rights through active partnership with partner countries, international and regional organisations, and groups and associations at all levels of society

  • inclusion of human rights clauses in all agreements on trade or cooperation with non-EU countries".

When it comes to Europe's relationship with Iran, none of those lofty principles appears to matter at all. According to Amnesty International's 2017-2018 country report on Iran:

"The [Iranian] authorities heavily suppressed the rights to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly, as well as freedom of religion and belief, and imprisoned scores of individuals who voiced dissent. Trials were systematically unfair. Torture and other ill-treatment was widespread and committed with impunity. Floggings, amputations and other cruel punishments were carried out. The authorities endorsed pervasive discrimination and violence based on gender, political opinion, religious belief, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and gender identity. Hundreds of people were executed, some in public, and thousands remained on death row. They included people who were under the age of 18 at the time of the crime".

Women, it seems, were especially subjected to abuse. According to the report:

"Women remained subject to entrenched discrimination in law and practice, including in access to divorce, employment, equal inheritance and political office, and in family and criminal law...The authorities failed to criminalize gender-based violence... The legal age of marriage for girls remained at 13, and fathers and grandfathers could obtain permission from courts for their daughters to be married at an even younger age. All 137 women who registered as presidential candidates were disqualified by the Guardian Council. President Rouhani included no woman ministers in his cabinet, despite civil society demands. Compulsory veiling (hijab) allowed police and paramilitary forces to harass and detain women for showing strands of hair under their headscarves or for wearing heavy make-up or tight clothing..."

Evidently none of these facts bothered Mogherini and company.

Then how about the fact of Iran being the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism? After all, Iran plotted four terrorist attacks on European soil since 2015 alone, according to the Dutch government. It alleged that Iran committed two assassinations in the Netherlands, and plotted one attack in Denmark and another in France -- the latter at a rally of dissidents.

In fairness, the EU has produced the tiniest of pathetic gestures to pretend that it cares about Iranian terrorism: It imposed sanctions on Iran's intelligence ministry and two Iranian nationals. But has a little state-sponsored terrorism come between Iran and the EU in doing business -- professedly to preserve an illegal and unsigned Iran deal? Dream on.

No amount of human rights abuses, however atrocious -- or terrorism, even against its own citizens; or cheating to acquire deliverable nuclear capability to unleash on Israel, the US and eventually threaten the entire West -- will, it seems, deter the EU from its criminal collusion with Iran. Europe seems determined to wade into its own destruction with its eyes wide open.

International Union of Muslim Scholars urges imams to preach violent jihad against Israel, quotes genocidal hadith

“The fourth message is: Worshipping Allah and waging jihad for His sake are the path to liberating the blessed Al-Aqsa mosque… When the Prophet Muhammad spoke of the battle to liberate Al-Aqsa from the hands of the Jews, he explained that the battle cry is ‘Worship Allah the Almighty,’ since according to the Muslim’s collection [of the most important Sunni hadiths], the Sahih Muslim, the Prophet Muhammad said: ‘Resurrection Day will come only when the Muslims fight the Jews and kill them, and if a Jew hided behind a rock or a tree, the rock or tree will say: Oh Muslim, oh servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him…’ This explains clearly that the path to liberating Al-Aqsa Mosque begins with the actual worship of Allah, submission to Him alone, and obedience to His precepts…”
There are still many Islamic apologists in the West who claim that Muslims today don’t take that genocidal Hadith (which can be found at Sahih Muslim 6985) seriously. What will they say to this? Nothing, of course.
“International Union Of Muslim Scholars Urges Imams To Preach Armed Jihad Against Israel To Save Al-Aqsa,” MEMRI, April 4, 2019:
On April 1, 2019, the International Union of Muslim Clerics (IUMS) proclaimed Friday, April 5, 2019 as “Day of Support for Jerusalem, Al-Aqsa and Gaza,” and urged Muslim preachers worldwide to devote their sermon on that day to this topic. The IUMS also posted a sermon it advised the preachers to deliver on that date, which calls for armed jihad against Israel and includes antisemitic motifs. The following are excerpts from it:
“[The act of] marking Isra and Mi’raj [in Islam, the Prophet’s Night Journey from Mecca to Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem, marked this year on April 4] contains within it [both] pain and hope… Oh beloved [Muslims], come to the Isra and Miraj compound [i.e., the Al-Aqsa compound in Jerusalem]… and we shall draw inspiration from a few lessons… [conveyed by] this great event [the Prophet’s Night Journey] and use them to illuminate the way, for this event conveys an infinity of messages.
“…The first message [offers] a modicum of hope at a time of despair – it is a message to every Muslim: When troubles surround you in force, and the situation is bleak, [when] friends become fewer and enemies multiply… call in your fajr [dawn] prayers, ‘Oh Allah,’ and trust and be certain of salvation and victory…
“The second message is: You have the right to lead humanity, so why do you relinquish it? There is a message in the fact that the Prophet Muhammad leads public prayer for the prophets, and it is that all the prophets handed over the leadership and control of humanity to the Prophet Muhammad, and therefore his followers have the right to bear this banner after him and to be the leaders of humanity. The path passed down to us by the Prophet is to make the path of humanity successful, and to lead it from darkness to light… It is only when the Muslims relinquish their role and hand the reins of power to those who do not consider humanity important and know only the language of destruction and murder, that humanity is condemned to misery…
“The third message is: Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Mecca mosque [i.e. the Kaaba] are one and the same; anyone denigrating one denigrates the other. When Allah said [Quran 17:1], ‘Holy is He Who carried His servant by night from the Holy Mosque (in Makkah) to the farthest Mosque [Al-Aqsa],'[1] he linked the Kaaba and Al-Aqsa mosque, and here two things should be emphasized:
“1. Creating the link [between the two mosques] indicates [the following:] A threat to Al-Aqsa mosque is like a threat to the Kaaba and to residents [of Mecca]; the Muslims losing Al-Aqsa, and its fall to the Jews, means a possible threat to the security of the Kaaba and of Hejaz [the region where Islam’s holy cities Mecca and Medina are located], since the Jews have never concealed their aspirations about the Kaaba. Thus, David Ben Gurion, when reviewing Jewish troops and young people near Al-Aqsa mosque, gave a speech rife with hatred and loathing, which he concluded by saying: ‘We have conquered Jerusalem and [now] we are on our way to Yathrib [the previous name of Medina].’ Thus too did Golda Meir, prime minister of the Zionist entity, say in a speech in the Gulf of Eilat after the conquest of Jerusalem: ‘I smell the fragrance of my forefathers in Medina and Hejaz, which is our land, and we will return to it’…[2] Accordingly, this message is now clear to every Muslim: Anyone who abandons Al-Aqsa mosque will later take lightly the abandonment of the Kaaba; therefore, it is an obligation to go out against those who abandon and relinquish our right to our holy land…
“The fourth message is: Worshipping Allah and waging jihad for His sake are the path to liberating the blessed Al-Aqsa mosque… When the Prophet Muhammad spoke of the battle to liberate Al-Aqsa from the hands of the Jews, he explained that the battle cry is ‘Worship Allah the Almighty,’ since according to the Muslim’s collection [of the most important Sunni hadiths], the Sahih Muslim, the Prophet Muhammad said: ‘Resurrection Day will come only when the Muslims fight the Jews and kill them, and if a Jew hided behind a rock or a tree, the rock or tree will say: Oh Muslim, oh servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him…’ This explains clearly that the path to liberating Al-Aqsa Mosque begins with the actual worship of Allah, submission to Him alone, and obedience to His precepts…
“It is clear as day that the Jews have no fear of negotiating or dialogue, but they quake with fear in the face of the young people who have been raised on the principles of [the Islamic] faith and on the precepts of the Quran. Proof of this is the young Palestinian mujahideen, who have made the Jews taste fear and have shaken their entity [i.e. Israel] with their heroic jihadi operations. They carried a gun in one hand, and a Quran in the other…

Release of Mueller Russia Report on 2016 US Election Appears Imminent      Comment   Translate Page
Release appears imminent of a redacted version of special counsel Robert Mueller's nearly 400-page report on Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, but sparring over Mueller's conclusions is already rampant. Washington is expecting that Attorney General William Barr could disclose the report on Monday or Tuesday, much-awaited details from Mueller's 22-month investigation of Donald Trump campaign contacts with Russia and whether Trump, as president, obstructed justice by trying to thwart the probe. White House press secretary Sarah Sanders told Fox News Sunday, "I don't think it is going to be damaging to the president." Congressman Jerrold Nadler, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee that is probing the election, told CNN on Sunday that Barr should release the full report and underlying investigatory evidence to his panel, but Barr has balked. "To deny the Judiciary Committee and the Congress the knowledge of what's in parts of the Mueller report is not proper," Nadler said. No one other than Barr and key officials in the Justice Department, Mueller and his team of prosecutors appear to know what the report says about the extent of Trump campaign links with Russia during his 2016 campaign or whether he took any actions as the U.S. leader aimed at inhibiting the investigation. Barr released a four-page summary of the Mueller conclusions three weeks ago, saying the prosecutor had concluded that Trump and his campaign did not collude with Russia to help him win but had reached no conclusion whether Trump obstructed justice. But with Mueller not reaching a decision on the obstruction issue, Barr and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein decided no obstruction charges against Trump were warranted. Nadler said that even though Barr concluded no obstruction charges should be brought against Trump, his decision should not go without review. Nadler noted that Barr, before he became the country's top law enforcement official, wrote that Trump could not obstruct justice because the president "is the boss of the Justice Department and could order it around to institute an investigation, to eliminate an investigation or could not be questioned about that." "In other words, (Barr) thinks as a matter of law a president can't obstruct justice, which is a very wild theory to which most people do not agree," Nadler said. "The fact of the matter is we should see and judge for ourselves and Congress should judge whether the president obstructed justice or not, and the public ultimately." Nadler said it "may be that Mueller decided not to prosecute obstruction of justice for various reasons that there wasn't proof beyond a reasonable doubt on some things. But there still may have been proof of some very bad deeds and very bad motives. And we need to see them and the public needs to see them." Since the release of Barr's summary, Trump has claimed "total exoneration, no collusion, no obstruction." Trump for months derided Mueller's investigation, but said he believes Mueller acted honorably in clearing him of colluding with Russia. Opposition Democrats like Nadler have launched new investigations of Trump, a Republican, but the president is objecting. On Twitter, Trump said Saturday, "Why should Radical Left Democrats in Congress have a right to retry and examine the $35,000,000 (two years in the making) No Collusion Mueller Report, when the crime committed was by Crooked Hillary, the DNC and Dirty Cops? Attorney General Barr will make the decision!" He was referring to Hillary Clinton, his 2016 opponent, and the Democratic National Committee, which supported her candidacy. Barr has said he will release as much of the Mueller report as possible, while excluding material Mueller included from secret grand jury testimony and confidential U.S. intelligence sources.
White House Looking at Sending Migrants to Sanctuary Cities      Comment   Translate Page
The White House on Sunday, echoing President Donald Trump, said sending undocumented migrants to sanctuary U.S. cities that have protected them from deportation remains a possibility even though government agencies have said it would be impractical and there is no money allocated to do it. "We certainly are looking at all options as long as [opposition] Democrats refuse to acknowledge the crisis at the border," White House press secretary Sarah Sanders told the "Fox News Sunday" show. Trump said late Saturday on Twitter, "Democrats must change the Immigration Laws FAST. If not, Sanctuary Cities must immediately ACT to take care of the Illegal Immigrants - and this includes Gang Members, Drug Dealers, Human Traffickers, and Criminals of all shapes, sizes and kinds. CHANGE THE LAWS NOW!" Hundreds of U.S. cities, along with California, the country's most populous state, have declared themselves as havens for migrants who have illegally crossed the southern U.S. border with Mexico, refusing the help U.S. immigration officials to track down the immigrants so they can be deported. U.S. border authorities apprehended more than 100,000 undocumented migrants, mostly from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, at the border in March, nearly twice that in the same month in 2018. "The USA has the absolute legal right to have apprehended illegal immigrants transferred to Sanctuary Cities," Trump said. "We hereby demand that they be taken care of at the highest level, especially by the State of California, which is well known (for) its poor management & high taxes!"   The U.S. now houses thousands of migrants at the border, but is running out of beds and instead is releasing new arrivals into the U.S. on their promise to appear at asylum hearings that might not occur for two years.   The Department of Homeland Security has said that Congress has not appropriated any money to transport the migrants from the border to far-flung sanctuary cities across the U.S., while the Immigration and Custom Enforcement agency has called it an "unnecessary operational burden." Sanders said, "Nobody thinks this is the ideal solution," sending migrants to sanctuary cities. But she said mayors of cities "who want this... should be looking to help" Trump resolve the crisis at the border. She accused Congress of wanting to spend "all of its time investigating the president" rather than dealing with the immigration turmoil at the border. Trump tweeted, "So interesting to see the Mayor of Oakland and other Sanctuary Cities NOT WANT our currently 'detained immigrants' after release due to the ridiculous court ordered 20 day rule. If they don’t want to serve our Nation by taking care of them, why should other cities & towns?" Trump was referring to a court ruling prohibiting the U.S. from detaining migrant minors, those under 18 years old, for more than 20 days, before being required to release them to relatives in the U.S. or other care givers. A key Republican lawmaker, Sen. Lindsey Graham, told another Fox News show, "Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo," that after the current two-week congressional recess ends, he would introduce legislation that would authorize the detention of children beyond 20 days, "toughen up our asylum standards," and allow migrant children to be returned to Central American countries, which is not now allowed once they have entered the United States. "We're never going to change this with troops and walls at the border," Graham said of the U.S. immigration crisis. "Doing what we're doing is not working." He added, "If you get one foot into the United States," migrants can seek asylum. "The word is out that if you come with a minor, you're never going to get deported. We need to change that narrative. We need troops at the border. We need a law. But these [U.S.] laws are insane."

I don't watch to CNN either much as I have only so much time but CNN comes out much better than Fox on multiple different fact checking sites. For instance, while Media Bias Fact Check (one of the best sources around in my opinion) rates both as Mixed in their factual reporting, they have very different reasoning on why. "Overall, we rate Fox News strongly Right-Biased due to wording and story selection that favors the right and Mixed factually based on poor sourcing and the spreading of conspiracy theories that later must be retracted after being widely shared." And "Overall, we rate CNN left biased based on story selection that often favors the left. We rate them Mixed for factual reporting due to misinformation and failed fact checks from guests and pundits. However, CNN’s straight news reporting would earn a High rating for factual reporting." There is a difference in pundits being idiots, and choosing loaded words and the actual news being wrong. Neither is ideal but conflating an F with a C in reporting is problematic. Check out the Media Bias Chart: https://www.adfontesmedia.com/media-bias-chart-3-1-minor-updates-based-constructive-feedback/ (click on the image for a larger version) There is a vast difference between skews liberal/conservative and providing wrong facts. There is a relatively simple way of tracking major ownership of publicly traded U.S. companies. Anyone or institution (banks, mutual funds, hedge funds, etc) with a 5% or more stake in a company must register with the SEC. And that information is public and readily available. Additionally, top executives of those companies are also required to requester as "corporate insiders", and any transactions by them ("and the 5 percenters") must be reported. Those transactions are public information as well. Re Fox News itself, there was a major restructing by Fox Nres' parent company about 5 years ago and some spin-offs and sales of assets.l think Disney ended up buying some of the "old NewsCorp". It looks like Fox News is now a subsidiarity of the "new NewsCorp". I can't find the Saudi prince's name in the 5%+ list, or the name of a fund or investment group associated with him. It looks like he sold a big share of NewsCorp in 2017, so before 2017 sale, he might have still been in that 5% group.
