TV's best bets: 'Jezebel James' opens strong      Comment   Translate Page

Tonight’s must-see

The Return of Jezebel James” debut, 8 and 8:30 p.m., Fox.

Like most central characters on TV, Sarah (Parker Posey) is great at her work and clumsy at life. She’s a successful book editor. Her longtime boyfriend has left; her apartment and life are empty.

Now she’s learned that she can’t give birth. She turns the job over to her sister Coco (Lauren Ambrose), a drifter and rock groupie.

A classic comedy of opposites is done by skilled hands. The creator is Amy Sherman-Palladino, who wrote zesty dialog for “Gilmore Girls.” Posey has long been a superstar of the independent-film world; Ambrose co-starred in “Six Feet Under.” This mid-season show crackles with sharp, verbal humor.

We can’t vouch for the second episode, which brings in Oscar-winner Dianne Wiest and actor-turned-novelist Ron McCarty as the parents of Sarah and Coco. The opener, however, is a great start.

Tonight’s must-see II

“Grey’s Anatomy,” 8 p.m., ABC.

This reruns the episode that actor T.R. Knight should be offering at Emmy time. A great character is at his best.

George O’Malley tends to be shy and hesitant. Now he’s the go-between for two strong characters: Dr. Bailey (Chandra Wilson) is tied up in surgery; her husband is waiting semi-patiently outside.

George must handle the shuttle diplomacy for a fragile marriage; Knight does this beautifully. And a late scene with Bailey’s patient offers the flip side of a quietly diligent soul.

Other choices include

“College Hill,” 8 and 8:30 p.m., BET. Here’s the opening of a season that puts several students together in Atlanta. As things start, the guys seem terribly interested in sex; the women have their doubts.

Basketball, 8 p.m., ESPN and ESPN2. The busy time for college fans is starting now, with both channels offering a conference-tournament doubleheader. It’s the Big East on ESPN, the Atlantic Coast Conference on ESPN2.

“Glory Road” (2006), 8 p.m., TNT. Instead of watching a current game, this is a good night to relive a classic one. This peaks with a first – the 1966 NCAA championship game between obscure Texas Western, with an all-black starting line-up, and powerful Kentucky, which was all-white. John Lucas plays Western coach Don Haskins; Jon Voight plays legendary Kentucky coach Adolph Rupp.

“Ghost Whisperer,” 9 p.m., CBS. In a rerun, Melinda meets a young girl who seems to have the same abilities she has.

“Dateline” (NBC) and “20/20” (ABC), 9-11 p.m. With the networks still getting their post-strike episodes ready, both news magazines expand. We might count that as one of the benefits – there haven’t been many.

“Hustle & Flow” (2005), 9 p.m., BET. Terrence Howard plays a pimp who tries to go legit, as a rapper. The film drew praise, plus an Oscar for the song “It’s Hard Out Here For a Pimp” and a nomination for Howard.

Saturday night owls: 'Why the Highlander Attack Matters'      Comment   Translate Page

Robin D.G. Kelley and Makani Themba at The Nation write—Why the Highlander Attack MattersThe arson attack on the Highlander Center, a longtime leader in racial and social-justice work, is not merely a hate crime—it’s an act of war:

News of the March 29 arson attack on the Highlander Research and Education Center in New Market, Tennessee, shocked and angered progressives across the country. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but the blaze destroyed Highlander’s main office building, along with valuable organizational records and historic documents that had not been archived at the University of Wisconsin and other repositories. Yet, for the many familiar with its storied history of movement-building, research, radical education, and cultural work, the devastation goes much deeper than property loss. It’s as if a sanctuary was violated.

owl

And violated it was. Making crystal clear their terrorist intention, the attackers left their mark on the parking lot by spray-painting a symbol derived from the fascist Romanian Iron Guard during the 1930s that is commonly used by white supremacists. The same symbol was painted on one of the guns used in the recent murderous attack on two mosques in New Zealand, and scrawled alongside swastikas on the University of Tennessee Knoxville campus in November.

The attack on Highlander is the latest in a rising wave of racist terror targeting black, brown, and indigenous communities, immigrants, Muslims, Jews, and gender non-conforming folks. For Highlander’s co-executive directors, Ash-Lee Woodard Henderson and the Rev. Allyn Maxfield-Steele, the attack was disheartening, frustrating, and terrifying, but hardly surprising. “Because of our history,” they wrote in a recent press release, “we are not surprised that this space, one where marginalized people working across sectors, geographies, and identities, show up consistently, has been repeatedly targeted over our 87 years of existence.”

The leadership, staff, and many activists associated with Highlander’s ongoing social-justice work understand the attack as not merely a hate crime by misguided individuals but an act of war. Situated on about 200 acres of land just east of Knoxville, Tennessee, Highlander has long been on the front lines of a protracted war on workers, poor farmers, people of color, and other marginalized communities. In a region ravaged by the worst excesses of capitalist and racist exploitation—plant closures, environmental catastrophe from coal mining, dispossession, opioid addiction, state-sanctioned violence—Highlander is one of the few progressive safe spaces where movements connect, dream, and build for the local, national, and global fight back. QUOTATION

“It is not great wealth in a few individuals that proves a country is prosperous, but great general wealth evenly distributed among the people . . . It is the struggling masses who are the foundation [of this country]; and if the foundation be rotten or insecure, the rest of the structure must eventually crumble. We must help everyone achieve prosperity in this country in order to survive, or we will fall like every great nation before us. Americans have a can do attitude. We can and will make every citizen prosperous, if we only determine to do it.”  ~~Victoria Woodhull, first woman presidential candidate (on the Equal Rights Party ticket in 1872)

TWEET OF THE DAY

BLAST FROM THE PAST

On this date at Daily Kos in 2007Another glowing Reid piece:

While the GOP leadership is under assault from their incompetence and corruption, ours continues to get glowing praise.

There's nothing fancy about Harry Reid, the Democratic leader in the Senate. Sartorially, he is a symphony in brown. He hails from a Nevada eye-blink called Searchlight, but isn't at ease in the spotlight. "I would just as soon never have a press conference," he says. An amateur boxer in his youth, the 65-year-old Reid's idea of a good time is to watch reruns of famous bouts on ESPN Classic. A favorite was on the other night: the 1955 epic between Archie Moore and Rocky Marciano. "Moore flattened Rocky early," Reid said. "Had him down, almost out. But by patience and sheer determination Marciano came back, round by round, and won. Both guys were cut and bloody when it was over." [...]

Reid, with 37 years in politics, is prospering partly by doing what shrewd boxers do in the early rounds to survive: let the other guy overreach. Proudly unphilosophical, he thinks the Democratic Party needs no soul-searching. "I believe in simplicity," he says. "Health care, pensions, energy independence--that's my agenda." [...]

While Reid himself is low-key, the allies he organizes throughout the city--polltakers, consultants, liberal lobbyists--are not. He has commissioned virtual "war rooms," which coordinate the use of focus-grouped attack language in ads and speeches on two main issues. The first was Social Security. Now comes the war of words over the Senate's hallowed "filibuster rule," which allows a minority of 41 members to use the privilege of talking endlessly to kill any legislative action--such as a judicial nomination they don't like. Reid's poll-tested line of attack: ending the filibuster rule would destroy the separation of powers envisioned by the Founding Fathers. It's not clear whether Frist has the support—or the nerve—to press for a vote on ending the rule. His own advisers are divided.

  • Johnson was criticized for the move, though it's unclear why he was texting or why he left.

ESPN cameras caught Philadelphia 76ers reserve forward Amir Johnson texting on the bench during their Game 1 loss to the Brooklyn Nets.

The incident happened during a timeout in the fourth quarter with the 76ers trailing the sixth-seeded Nets by double-digits. When ESPN returned from break, analyst Doris Burke criticized Johnson and Joel Embiid, who was sitting next to Johnson, for having the phone on the bench.

@RodMunch Winston had the 4th highest QBR for a reason. You have used in this blog a charge of "fake news" a bunch - Munch. So let us have a go at whether your statement fits your own definition of fake news. I will let you define it in a reply. I look at the QBR of Winston for 2018 of Winston and it appears to be 8th not 4th. Maybe you are using another reference for QBR but I think there is just the ESPN created version of QBR. But possibly the bigger flaw in why I think many would say it is fake news is that it is only a statistic that Winston fans have mentioned this past year. Never in 2015 (19th), 2016 (12th), or 2017 (18th) were Winston fans pushing the QBR as a key indicator of why Winston was good.

Also there has only one time a team has had the top 2 players in the draft and it was when we won it all in 2012... DUKe could quite possibly have the top 2 picks this year if not then 2 out of the top 3 picks and he failed to make a final 4... No body has had the talent dUKe has the last 3 seasons and they have exactly 0 final fours to show for it!!!! just saying plus I have never heard any coach make more excuses than Coach K this season every time they lost a game...

“No estamos allí todavía.

Check out the highlights from Dustin Poirier's championship victory over Max Holloway at UFC 236: Holloway vs. Poirier 2 in Atlanta. Poirier and Holloway fought an all-out war for five rounds in an early candidate for Fight of the Year, but it was Poirier that did the damage both early and late in the fight to lay claim to the interim UFC lightweight title. He'll next step into the cage opposite undefeated champion Khabib Nurmagomedov later this year.

Check out the highlights from Israel Adesanya's victory over Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 236: Holloway vs. Poirier 2 in Atlanta. Adesanya and Gastelum fought a war from the opening bell to the fight's close, but it was Adesanya that poured it on in the waning moments of the fight to take a unanimous nod from the judges.

With the victory, Adesanya claimed the interim UFC middleweight championship and secured a shot at champion Robert Whittaker later this year.

Jade Dernbach wants Tom Curran in England's WC squad      Comment   Translate Page

[UK], Apr 13 (ANI): Surrey's white-ball captain Jade Dernbach opined that Tom Curran deserves to feature in England's preliminary World Cup squad owing to his bowling capabilities.

"If there was anyone in the country I'd throw the ball to, I'd back Tom Curran every day of the week. He has unbelievable skill, he practises unbelievably hard, but the most important thing is he wants the ball," ESPN Cricinfo quoted Dernback as saying.

"You may not be successful every day, and that's the nature of being a death bowler, but to keep putting your hand up, practising your skill, and doing it as he has done for Surrey time and time again, there's no reason he couldn't do it on the biggest stage, and I know he would love to. If you offered him the opportunity now to bowl the last over of the World Cup final, to defend seven or eight, he'll do it for you. I'd put my mortgage on it," he added.

Curran made his debut in 2017 and has played 13 ODIs and 10 T20Is. Curran missed the whole of England's white-ball campaign last summer due to a side strain.

However, he showed an impeccable performance in his third ODI at Perth last year when he achieved his career-best figures of 5 for 35 which helped his side hand a 12-run defeat to Australia.

England are set to announce their World Cup squad at Lord's on Wednesday. (ANI)

Saturday night owls: 'Why the Highlander Attack Matters'      Comment   Translate Page

Robin D.G. Kelley and Makani Themba at The Nation write—Why the Highlander Attack Matters. The arson attack on the Highlander Center, a longtime leader in racial and social-justice work, is not merely a hate crime—it’s an act of war:

News of the March 29 arson attack on the Highlander Research and Education Center in New Market, Tennessee, shocked and angered progressives across the country. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but the blaze destroyed Highlander’s main office building, along with valuable organizational records and historic documents that had not been archived at the University of Wisconsin and other repositories. Yet, for the many familiar with its storied history of movement-building, research, radical education, and cultural work, the devastation goes much deeper than property loss. It’s as if a sanctuary was violated.

BLAST FROM THE PAST

On this date at Daily Kos in 2007—Another glowing Reid piece:
