6-Year-Old Georgia Girl Millie Drew Kelly Killed After Being Accidentally Shot By Her 4-Year-Old Brother      Comment   Translate Page

An ambulance pulls into a hospital.

A 6-year-old Georgia girl named Millie Drew Kelly was killed this week after authorities say her 4-year-old brother was playing with a gun inside the family’s car and accidentally shot her.

The incident happened in Paulding County, which is roughly 40 miles from Atlanta. As CNN reported, the family was preparing to go to the young boy’s baseball game when their car would not start. The mother exited the car, and as she did so, the boy was able to grab hold of a gun that was in the car’s console. The weapon went off while the mother was still outside the car, with the bullet striking the 6-year-old girl in the head.

Mueller Report Not The End, ‘Long Shadow’ Of Russia Investigation Spreads To Roger Stone, Other Ongoing Cases      Comment   Translate Page

Robert Mueller listens

With a heavily redacted version of the Robert Mueller Russia investigation report due to be released publicly within a week, Mueller’s own work appears to be done. However, the special counsel investigation continues to cast a “long shadow” over the Donald Trump administration, according to a Politico report, with an unknown number of investigations continuing to target key figures in Mueller’s probe — including longtime Trump friend and political adviser Roger Stone.

On Friday, prosecutors told a judge in a Washington D.C. federal court that they could not make search warrant documents from Stone’s case public — despite a freedom-of-information demand from several media organizations — because the warrants contain details that “concern investigations that remain ongoing,” according to CNN.

In January, Stone’s home was searched and he was arrested in an early morning raid. Mueller then slapped Stone with a 24-page indictment charging him with lying to investigators, witness tampering, and obstruction, as The Inquisitr reported.

Biden and Sanders are in the Driver's Seat       Comment   Translate Page

I am hopeful that the upcoming presidential cycle will have a little less content-free horse race coverage than the cycles we’ve had in the past. It just seems like people in the media are a bit chastened by the election of Donald Trump and don’t want to repeat all the same mistakes this time around. Yet, I know I am being optimistic. We’re still going to see a lot of bad takes like this one from First Read that tries to convince us that Bernie Sanders is tanking because he’s only polling at 16 percent in Iowa and New Hampshire.

On the numbers, this take is a bit ludicrous. Sanders is currently polling in second place in both states, and he’s in first place among candidates who have actually declared that they are running. He trails only Joe Biden, and he’s more than doubling the numbers of well-funded and well-known candidates Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren in Iowa and nearly doing so in New Hampshire.

This piece takes no account of how delegates are actually awarded in the Democratic primaries, where you need to break 15 percent to get anything, and if you are one of only two candidates to clear that hurdle, you can count on getting more than 40 percent of that states’ haul. If these elections were held today, Biden and Sanders would be splitting all the delegates between them, and even if Sanders were losing every state it would take him a long time to be mathematically eliminated.

Without projecting forward, Bernie Sanders is in an enviable position, and his fundraising is excellent. He raised the most money of any candidate in the first quarter by a wide margin and reportedly has a $28 million war chest. Yet, he is supposedly not taking the criticism he deserves for polling far below where he finished in 2016 during a one-on-one contest with Hillary Clinton.

A better take comes from Jonathan Bernstein, who correctly points out that relatively few people are paying close attention to the race at this point and that the polls are therefore largely about name recognition. He also argues that negative stories about candidates are probably being treated as more consequential than they’ll prove to be in the end. And I think that depends on the candidate. First impressions are important, and it did real damage to Amy Klobuchar when she faced a bunch of criticism from former staffers soon after she announced. Stories about Joe Biden’s inappropriate grabbiness and voting record aren’t as crippling because people already know what they think about the former vice-president. In any case, he’s happy to get these stories covered now before he’s even announced himself as a candidate.

Biden and Sanders are leading the polls in large part because they are the best known politicians in the bunch, but also because Democrats genuinely like them. While there may be a wide gulf between them ideologically, especially if we go back decades in time, most voters aren’t making those kinds of distinctions. They’re leading because they’re popular with Democrats all along the ideological spectrum, and this seems to confound and perplex political analysts and activists alike. Progressives are supposed to be repelled by Biden and white working class voters are presumed to dislike socialism. Neither assumption bears out in the polling numbers.

As the other candidates begin to execute their plans and get their chances to perform on big stages, we will see these polling numbers begin to fluctuate, and there will be horses that show a burst for a time. It’s interesting to speculate about which candidates might have the talent or good fortune to move from the back to the front. The Democratic primary voters may want a reliable hand like Biden or an economic populist like Sanders or Warren or a fresh and charismatic face like O’Rourke, Harris or Booker. They might want someone completely new and from outside of Washington DC, like Pete Buttigieg or Washington governor Jay Inslee.

All we know right now is that Biden and Sanders are in the best position to win the nomination. We’re not suffering because there aren’t enough takes being published about why they’re not doing better.

Senate Republicans Miss the Filibuster       Comment   Translate Page

Before the filibuster was eliminated for most presidential nominees, the White House needed to negotiate with the other party to assure that their candidates were at least minimally acceptable. Without a handful of votes from the other side, there was no way to get their people confirmed. President Trump would have been laughed out of town if he suggested he might select Herman Cain and Stephen Moore to serve on the Federal Reserve board. In retrospect, the old system often saved the Senate leaders of the president’s own party from having to play the heavy. Ridiculous nominees were generally rejected internally within the White House vetting process for lack of viability. If they somehow slipped through and were sent to the Senate, the opposition party played the bad guy by rejecting them.

This system has now been upended. The Republicans in the Senate have no cover anymore if they want to deny the president a nomination. The solution is to tell the White House in advance that they should not make these nominations because they’ll be rejected.

Senate Republican leaders are sending a message to members troubled by President Donald Trump’s controversial Federal Reserve picks: Speak up.

During Tuesday afternoon’s Senate Republican lunch, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell advised senators concerned about Trump’s selection of former presidential candidate and pizza executive Herman Cain and conservative economic commentator Stephen Moore to share their views with the White House now, before Trump officially moves forward with the nominations, a source familiar with the remarks told CNN.

The basic conversation here is pretty straightforward. A Republican senator or his or her staffer calls the White House chief of staff or the congressional liaison. They tell them that if they go forward with a nomination, they cannot count on their vote. If enough Republican senators send this message to the White House, they can dissuade the nomination from going forward. The benefit to the White House is that they can avoid embarrassment. This is also a benefit to the people who are under consideration for the jobs. The benefit for the Republican senators is that they can buck their own president quietly and behind the scenes and won’t come under pressure to back someone who is manifestly unfit for the position.

You can see how uneasy the Senate Republicans are about defying the president.

In hallway interviews with nearly 20 Republican senators on Tuesday, most were reluctant to candidly discuss Cain’s potential nomination. Many said they hadn’t heard the days-old news that Trump was planning to select him. Others opted to withhold comment, while some expressed vague reservations.

Most of them are uncomfortable even discussing these nominations. Some responses lack candor and others are outright disingenuous. They want to issue to disappear, but they are the only ones who can make the issue disappear. Most of all, they’d like to avoid being put in this position in the first place:

Republicans are in a slightly better position to confirm contentious appointees than they were before the 2018 midterm elections, with their new majority of 53, but they can still afford to lose only a few votes before any nomination would be doomed.

That concern prompted Sen. John Cornyn of Texas on Tuesday to warn the White House to consult in advance with Senate leaders on nominations like these.

The Senate is supposed to provide their advice and consent to presidential nominations, and certainly the hearing process can give them that opportunity. But it’s better politics to do most of the vetting prior to making any announcements. The president clearly expects the Senate Republicans to approve anyone he nominates because it is now technically within their power to approve people with no Democratic support.

Many warned that the Senate would break if the filibuster was weakened or eliminated, and here is an example of a worst case scenario. By blocking acceptable nominations during the Obama administration just to slow down business in the Senate, Mitch McConnell forced the Democrats to find a work-around. Now the Republicans are having difficulty rejecting ludicrous candidates because the White House sees no reason not to send them forward.

Kim Kardashian pivots to law      Comment   Translate Page
"First year of law school," Kim Kardashian West told US Vogue in her May cover interview, "you have to cover three subjects: criminal law, torts, and contracts." (For the record, there are a few others, too, including constitutional law and civil procedure). For Kardashian, "Torts is the most confusing, contracts the most boring, and crim law I can do in my sleep. Took my first test, I got a 100. Super easy for me."

Kardashian announced this week in the same interview that she began a four-year apprenticeship with a law firm in San Francisco last summer and wants to take the California bar exam in 2022. (She is not enrolled in law school. Under California law, aspiring lawyers can undertake an apprenticeship and if they pass the bar exam, they can practice law -- even without a law school degree).

The reality superstar's pivot to becoming a lawyer -- apparently motivated by her stated desire to do more to improve the criminal justice system, "to fight to fix it," -- has prompted a mixed response. Many have predictably derided the move as idiotic, telling her to stay in her lane. Others have called the criticism sexist, highlighting the obvious comparison between Kardashian and Reese Witherspoon's character in the 2001 movie "Legally Blonde," Elle Woods -- also initially dismissed in her law school efforts because of her looks and past persona.

The bottom line is this: Kardashian is inspiring for choosing a new path as a 38-year-old mother of three -- and she is also the nauseatingly privileged proof that in today's America, no option is off-limits for the very wealthy.

In many ways, this is the most interesting thing Kim Kardashian West has ever done. And it says a lot about the susceptibility of the public and press to her carefully-constructed image that so few saw this coming.

There are some obvious ways in which this path makes sense for Kardashian. Her father, Robert Kardashian, was a well-known lawyer, part of OJ Simpson's defense team. She has already demonstrated an interest in the law, making herself heard on criminal justice issues and playing a significant part last year in President Trump's release of Alice Marie Johnson, a 63-year-old woman who'd been in an Alabama prison on a nonviolent drug charge since 1996.

Meeting with Trump, alongside CNN commentator and activist Van Jones, plus several lawyers, Kardashian West helped persuade the President with a force of argument Jones described as "the most effective, emotionally intelligent intervention that I've ever seen in American politics." She has also worked for months with #cut50, a bipartisan advocacy group aiming to reform the criminal-justice system. Compared with some of her other ventures -- advertising dangerous slimming teas to her legions of young female fans, for example -- this looks not just like a step in a far more positive direction, but a break from the brand the Kardashian family has built over the years.

The Kardashians are described in public discourse variously as mercenary, feminist, impressive, groundbreaking, and sickeningly superficial. There are strong arguments to be made for every case, but despite so many opposing characteristics, they tend to be referred to as a monolith -- not individuals so much as component parts of a vast, unprecedented money machine.

Kim Kardashian, for years the most famous member of her family, was somehow the most Kardashian. She was the most polished, the most bankable (until sister Kylie Jenner's ascent), almost inhumanly adapted to the constant whirl of 5 a.m. workouts, three-hour makeup sessions, photo shoots and paparazzi that the machine demanded. She leaned in to the living doll persona, which the media so eagerly bestowed upon her, and as a result, many now have difficulty imagining her as anything but that.

Throughout 16 seasons of the reality show that made her family world-famous, Kim's demeanor has scarcely changed. A couple of upsetting instances aside, she has remained placid throughout, more prone to asking questions than volunteering confidences herself. When emotions ran high as Caitlin Jenner went public with her transition, Kim was often the mediator, allowing everyone their say, but intervening to defuse tense conversations when necessary.

In a way, it is her predictability that makes Kim Kardashian such comforting television. With her, you always know what you're getting. In retrospect, some of those considered responses signpost a personality that could be mesh with a career in law.

When in 2017, Kardashian described the process of identifying the men who robbed her at gunpoint in her Paris hotel room in October 2016, she was matter of fact. She itemized events without adding color or emotion, even noting that the men who had attacked her were 'pretty honest' in their recall of that night. Her most revealing comment was that it was "interesting" to know that they had been following her for over a year. She added that she was "thankful" for the experience, as it had afforded her "all the background info'"she needed on how she could protect herself in future.

Her recent foray into criminal justice also isn't the first time that digging below her contoured surface has revealed unexpected depths. Following the Parkland shooting last year, she tweeted to urge Congress to do its job and "protect Americans from senseless gun violence." She also took to Twitter in 2015 to denounce lax gun laws, after David Conley bought a gun online to kill his ex-girlfriend, her husband, and her six children, including his own son (she tweeted, "Does this not sicken you?"). She did so again after the 2017 Las Vegas music festival shooting to share an image denouncing high capacity firearms as inconsistent with the Second Amendment.

Every time she has spoken out on gun laws, Kim has been met with derogatory remarks such as, "Stick to selfies." But she has backed up her tweets. In 2016, she met with gun violence survivors from Sandy Hook and San Bernardino. For several years, she's been a creative council member of the organization Everytown For Gun Safety, which is dedicated to gun safety and fighting for legislative reform. In 2017, she recognized National Gun Violence Awareness Day by speaking out against a bill signed by Trump that revoked an Obama-era regulation. She may not always broadcast it, but Kim Kardashian does her homework.

As far as her metamorphosis from reality star into woke lawyer goes, the proof will be in the pudding. If her previous activities -- not to mention the acquisitive tendencies of her mother, Kris Jenner -- are any indication, within the next decade we will see a Kardashian law firm, capitalizing on the family name but well-stocked with qualified lawyers to ensure it goes the distance (and makes as much money as possible). For now though, as a woman whose career thus far has been fed by sex appeal and social media, Kardashian's move is a bold one, picking a direction that demands a completely different skill set, and flies in the face of expectations. When asked by Vogue what she will be remembered for, she replied aptly, "For my many talents."

‘My friends were afraid of me’: What 80 million unexploded US bombs did to Laos.

Yang was just 22 and burning rubbish near his village in the province of Xieng Khoung in north-eastern Laos, when a bomb blast tore off one of his eyelids, his top lip and an ear, mutilated one of his arms, and left him with severe scarring from the waist up.  “I remembered I burned the garbage, but after the explosion I was unconscious for two weeks,” Yang says. “I felt extreme pain…all over my body. I still feel pain always.”

His wounds were not caused by a modern day conflict, but by the remnants of a war that was waged more than 40 years ago, and is still destroying lives in this small Southeast Asian nation.

Some 80 million unexploded bombs are scattered across the country—the deadly legacy of what became known as America’s “secret war” in Laos—a CIA-led mission during the Vietnam War.

The world could transition entirely to cheap, safe renewable energy before 2050: Finnish study

Solar Panels

A study from the Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) and the Energy Watch Group (EWG) from Germany says a global transition to the exclusive use of renewable energy is possible before 2050. (iStock)

A global transition to the exclusive use of renewable energy sources is not only possible but also cheaper and safer than reliance on fossil fuels and nuclear energy, according to a new study from the Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) and the Energy Watch Group (EWG) from Germany.

The study claims that the rapid development of renewable energy sources and energy storage technology will likely make it possible for the entire planet to reduce its CO2 emissions to zero even earlier than the current 2050 deadline.

The report is the first of its kind to suggest a cost-effective, all-inclusive, global roadmap to keep average global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius. It is also the first planet-wide climate change resistance plan that suggests not using carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) techniques to mechanically remove CO2 from the atmosphere.

According to the model, in 2050 some 69 percent of the world’s energy would come from solar panels, 18 percent from wind power, 3 percent from hydropower systems and 6 percent from bioenergy.

Fossil fuels and nuclear power would not be needed at all. Cars, planes and ships would run on carbon-neutral synthetic fuels produced from hydrogen and carbon dioxide.

It's Hard Staying Focused On Issues In The Midst Of Trump's 10-Ring Circus-- But Bernie Is Staying On Message       Comment   Translate Page

How does Trump get people to not think about his disastrous economic policies, built on an entirely wasteful deficit that has nearly doubled to a trillion dollars since he occupied the White House? His pathetic circus routine has done the trick in a general sort of way. No one seems to be paying attention, for example, to his trade agenda with new outages come out every day, often more than one a day.

Yesterday, for example, Jake Tapper broke the news that a senior White House source-- probably Kushner-in-law or someone trying to get Kushner-in-law in trouble-- leaked the news that Trump told the Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan that he would grant him a pardon if he were sent to jail for having border agents illegally block asylum seekers from entering the U.S. Another Hair on Fire Friday moment! (And, by the way, since then Trump named McAleenan, acting secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.)

Active Shooter by Nancy Ohanian

Doing his best to leave Trump's constant, insane and attention-grabbing provocations to the media, Bernie keeps focusing on his core issues of income inequality and a rigged system. Yesterday he followed up on his trade agenda by releasing the video below, itself an update of the video above from last year. Bernie's key points about Trump's soggy trade deal with Mexico and Canada-- currently in no man's land in Congress where it has virtually no chance of being ratified-- are that:
the deal would continue to ship U.S. jobs to Mexico because Mexico's workers make as little as two dollars an hour, which the deal doesn't address
the deal doesn't protect the enironment
the deal is a give-away to pharmaceuticals and other big corporate special interests
Last November Bernie told his Vermont constituents exactly why he opposes Trump's deal too replace the same NAFTA that Bernie has always opposed and feels needs to be replaced.
As someone who not only voted against NAFTA, but walked on the picket lines against it, there is no question that this unfettered trade deal needs to be fundamentally rewritten. In my view, a re-negotiated NAFTA must stop the outsourcing of U.S. jobs, end the destructive race to the bottom, protect the environment, and lower the outrageously high price of prescription drugs. Clearly, Trump’s NAFTA 2.0 does not meet these standards and I will strongly oppose it in its current form. Unless strong enforcement mechanisms are written into the text of this agreement, corporations will continue to ship U.S. jobs to Mexico where workers are paid as little as $2 an hour.

Further, this deal includes some outrageous giveaways to the fossil fuel industry and big pharmaceutical companies that will harm the environment and increase prices for life-saving prescription drugs. Before this deal is sent to Congress for a vote it must include strong enforcement mechanisms to increase jobs and wages and all of the riders that benefit big fossil fuel polluters and pharmaceutical companies must be taken out of it. Trade is a good thing-- but it has got to be fair.

Event Update For 2019-04-11      Comment   Translate Page

http://jumpingjackflashhypothesis.blogspot.com/2012/02/jumping-jack-flash-hypothesis-its-gas.html

The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

Holy Smokes...did Washington State just pass a full-blown ACA Public Option??      Comment   Translate Page

Back in January, 2nd-term Washington Governor and Democratic Presidential candidate Jay Inslee jumped fully onboard the Public Option train:

Inslee proposes ‘public option’ health-insurance plan for Washington

The proposal, which Inslee said is the first step toward universal health care, is geared in part to help stabilize the exchange, which has wrestled with double-digit premium increases and attempts by Republicans in Congress and President Donald Trump to dismantle the Affordable Care Act.

...The proposal would have the state Health Care Authority contract with at least one health-insurance carrier to offer qualified health coverage on the Washington Health Benefit Exchange, according to a summary of the proposal.

The plan would be designed with transparent and consistent deductibles, copays and coinsurance, according to the summary, and would “compete on premium price, provider networks, customer service, and quality.”

...Washington state Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler said getting the legislation passed will be difficult, but is necessary, especially for people buying health insurance on the individual market who don’t qualify for a subsidy.

...Cody said insurance companies know about the proposed legislation and are not “overjoyed” about the plan.

As I noted at the time:

Well no, they wouldn't be, would they (except for whichever carrier wins the state contract, I presume).

Since January, however, I haven't really written much about Inslee's proposal. I obviously hoped it would be serious, but figured it was mostly just meant to bolster his progressive street cred for his Presidential run.

    Well, guess what just happened?

Democrats in Olympia push through governor’s 'green' agenda and public healthcare coverage bills

...Another key item on the governor’s agenda is the so-called “public option” socialized health care coverage measure, SB 5526. This bill would create subsidized state-funded public health plans managed by regulated insurance companies. It would require the State Insurance Commissioner and the Health Care Authority to set up the socialized plans by 2021.

Side note: The term "socialized" is being misused here in my opinion, since the proposal would be neither socialized medicine (i.e., the healthcare providers wouldn't actually work for the government), nor would it be single payer (since enrollees would still be paying premiums, deductibles & co-pays).

These plans would be available through the state’s health care exchange to all residents, but the state would pay subsidies to individuals with incomes of up to five times the poverty level. Premiums would be limited to no more than ten percent of adjusted gross income, and payments to doctors and other health care providers would be restricted to Medicare-level limits.

That's like a trifecta of what progressives were dreaming of a decade ago when the ACA itself was originally being developed and voted on: A true public option, more subsidies available to more people and perhaps most significantly, Medicare-level rate setting. I didn't even know about the "bumping up subsidies to 500% FPL" part, but that's obviously welcome as well! For comparison California is hoping to bump APTC assistance up to 600% FPL, and the federal House Dems ACA 2.0 bill would remove the upper-threshold cap altogether...but 500% would still be better than 400%, especially if the policies were priced based on Medicare-level reimbursement rates.

In other words, if this actually goes into effect, it would be huge.

So, what actually happened this week?

The bill passed the Senate last month by a 36-13 vote, after a House version of the proposal, HB 1523, passed the House on a 57-41 party-line vote. The final proposal of the bill was incorporated in SB 5526 and passed the House on Wednesday by a 54-38 vote, with six members excused.

Changes to the bill made by the House will have to be approved by the Senate before it goes to the governor for his signature.

Holy crap on a stick! How did I not hear about any of these developments over the past month?? If I'm understanding this correctly, all that stands between Washington State and a full-blown, robust Public Option being added to their ACA Healthcare Exchange is for Gov. Jay Inslee a final vote in the state Senate and a signature by Gov. Inslee...and voila???

Well, ok, as noted above, it wouldn't go into effect until 2021, but still...this seems like a potentially massive healthcare development.

Here's the actual text of the bill itself (or at least of the "original" version...there's also a "Substitute" version and an "Engrossed Substitute"...I have no idea which one actually passed, but they're alll about the same length. It's surprisingly brief, actually...just four pages:

AN ACT Relating to increasing the availability of quality, 2 affordable health coverage in the individual market; adding a new 3 section to chapter 43.71 RCW; adding a new section to chapter 42.56 4 RCW; adding a new section to chapter 41.05 RCW; creating a new section; and providing an expiration date.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

    NEW SECTION. Sec. 1

A new section is added to chapter 43.71 RCW to read as follows:

    (1) The exchange, in consultation with the commissioner, the authority, an independent actuary, and other stakeholders, must establish up to three standardized health plans for each of the bronze, silver, and gold levels.

    (a) The standardized health plans must be designed to reduce deductibles, make more services available before the deductible, provide predictable cost sharing, maximize subsidies, limit adverse premium impacts, reduce barriers to maintaining and improving health, and encourage choice based on value, while limiting increases in health plan premium rates.

    (b) The silver standardized health plan must have an actuarial value between sixty-eight and seventy percent.

    (c) The exchange may update the standardized health plans annually.

    (d) The exchange must provide a notice and public comment period before finalizing each year's standardized health plans.

    (e) The exchange must provide written notice of the standardized health plans to licensed health carriers by January 31st before the year in which the health plans are to be offered on the exchange.

(2)(a) Beginning January 1, 2021, any health carrier offering a qualified health plan on the exchange must offer one silver standardized health plan and one gold standardized health plan on the exchange. If a health carrier offers a bronze health plan on the exchange, it must offer one bronze standardized health plan on the exchange.

    (b) For plan years 2021 through 2024, a health carrier offering a standardized health plan under this section may also offer nonstandardized health plans on the exchange subject to the following:

    (i) For plan years 2021 and 2022, a health carrier may offer an unlimited number of nonstandardized health plans on the exchange;

(ii) For plan years 2023 and 2024, a health carrier may not offer more than three nonstandardized health plans in each of the bronze, silver, and gold levels on the exchange; and

(iii) The actuarial value of nonstandardized silver health plans offered on the exchange may not be less than the actuarial value of the standardized silver health plan.

    (c) For health plan years beginning in 2025, a health carrier may not offer nonstandardized health plans in any metal level on the exchange.

    (d) A health carrier offering a standardized health plan on the exchange under this section must continue to meet all requirements for qualified health plan certification under RCW 43.71.065 32 including, but not limited to, requirements relating to rate review and network adequacy.

    NEW SECTION. Sec. 2.

A new section is added to chapter 42.56 RCW to read as follows:

Any data submitted by health carriers to the health benefit exchange for purposes of establishing standardized benefit plans under section 1 of this act are confidential and exempt from disclosure under this chapter.

    NEW SECTION. Sec. 3.

A new section is added to chapter 41.05 RCW to read as follows:

    (1) The authority, in consultation with the health benefit exchange, must contract with one or more health carriers to offer silver and gold qualified health plans on the Washington health benefit exchange for plan years beginning in 2021. A qualified health plan offered under this section must meet the following criteria:

    (a) The qualified health plan must be a standardized health plan established under section 1 of this act;

    (b) The qualified health plan must meet all requirements for qualified health plan certification under RCW 43.71.065 including, but not limited to, requirements relating to rate review and network adequacy;

    (c) The qualified health plan must incorporate recommendations of the Robert Bree collaborative and the health technology assessment program; and

    (d) The qualified health plan's fee-for-service rates for providers and facilities may not exceed the medicare rates for the same or similar covered services in the same or similar geographic area. For reimbursement methodologies other than fee-for-service, the aggregate amount the qualified health plan pays to providers and facilities may not exceed the equivalent of the aggregate amount the qualified health plan would have reimbursed providers and facilities using fee-for-service medicare rates.

    (2) When implementing this section, the director must use a request for qualifications process. The director must review the qualifications of health carriers seeking to offer qualified health plans under this section and may negotiate with the health plans to the extent necessary to refine the health carriers' responses. The director must contract with all health carriers who meet the minimum qualifications.

    (3) Nothing in this section prohibits a health carrier offering qualified health plans under this section from offering other health plans in the individual market.

    NEW SECTION. Sec. 4.

    (1) The Washington health benefit exchange, in consultation with the health care authority and the insurance commissioner, must develop a plan to implement and fund premium subsidies for individuals whose modified adjusted gross incomes are less than five hundred percent of the federal poverty level and who are purchasing individual market coverage on the exchange. The goal of the plan is to enable participating individuals to spend no more than ten percent of their modified adjusted gross incomes on premiums. The plan must also include an assessment of providing cost-sharing reductions to plan participants.

    (2) The Washington health benefit exchange must submit the plan, along with proposed implementing legislation, to the appropriate committees of the legislature by November 15, 2020.

    (3) This section expires January 1, 2021.

I keep thinking that I must be missing something here. The bill is only four typed pages, it seems to have quietly flown through both the WA state House and Senate with little notice outside the state, and there's zero details on where the funding for either the public option itself or the subsidies for those earning 400-500% FPL would come from.

There's nothing about submitting a 1332 waiver approval request to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid, which either means a) it wouldn't be needed since WA operates their own exchange and they intend on financing the entire PO using state funds, or b) that's covered by a separate document.

It's worth noting that Nevada actually pulled off a similar hat trick a couple of years ago (it was a Medicaid buy-in bill, not a Medicare-level Public Option)...and like this Washington development, that one also somehow flew under the radar until it was actually mostly through the process:

The Nevada state legislature quietly, and surprisingly, passed a Medicaid buy-in option for anyone in the state. I wrote about this back in April, but even I didn't think much of it at the time--I assumed it was more of a symbolic proposal than anything, or that it would die in committee at most. The details are important, of course, but assuming they make sense, this is exactly the sort of approach I would recommend in trying to gradually transition to some type of universal single-payer like system.

The biggest questions I'd want answered are 1) What type of coverage does Medicaid actually have in Nevada? It varies widely from state to state, so if NV's is pretty comprehensive, awesome, but if it's skimpy, that's not very helpful; 2) What sort of premiums/deductibles/co-pays would buy-in enrollees be looking at?; 3) What sort of impact would this have on the state budget?; and most significantly, 4) How many Nevada doctors/hospitals would accept these enrollees? Remember, the reason a significant chunk of healthcare providers don't accept Medicaid patients is because it only reimburses them around 50¢ on the dollar compared to private insurance.

Unfortunately, while the bill passed quickly through both the Nevada House and Senate, it was ultimately vetoed by then-GOP Governor Brian Sandoval.

The difference in Washington State, of course, is that not only do they have a progressive Democratic Governor...he's the one who actually proposed the Public Option in the first place.

In terms of funding...again, I see nothing.

How much would it actually cost? I'll run some very rough estimates tomorrow.

    Stay tuned...

He said the threat for severe weather is greatest at such times.

The storms most capable of producing tornadoes and large hail will be the individual, rotating cells that form ahead of a larger complex of thunderstorms.

    Tornadoes possible overnight in Alabama

By late Saturday, the storms were expected to organize into a line as they cross the western border of Mississippi.

The system will begin to move through Alabama overnight and is expected to reach Georgia by Sunday morning.

The energy from warm afternoon temperatures will diminish, but the risk for tornadoes will not be over.

"The storm is so vigorous that tornadoes are still possible after dark," Myers said.

Tornadoes at that time can be especially dangerous since they are difficult to see and people are less likely to receive warnings while they're asleep.

Georgia, the southern Appalachians and Ohio Valley

The most significant risk of severe weather is expected Saturday, but there's still considerable potential Sunday.

The Storm Prediction Center issued an enhanced risk across a broad area, stretching from eastern Alabama through the southern Appalachians and into the Ohio Valley. The main line of storms will begin to push into this area late Sunday morning and trek to the east on Sunday afternoon. The center said it expects the threat of severe weather to increase throughout the afternoon.

"Damaging winds appear to be the greatest threat on Sunday, but tornadoes will also be possible," CNN meteorologist Dave Hennen said.

The risk will slowly diminish as the system begins to weaken Sunday evening.

Sunday tee times moved up at The Masters

Georgia's Augusta National Golf Club is included in the slight risk area Sunday as the Masters golf tournament concludes. Tournament organizers have moved up tee times for Sunday because of the storm threat.

The storms are expected to move through the Augusta area during the afternoon and evening.

The tornado threat will be lower by then, but damaging winds could still present hazardous conditions.

CNN's Theresa Waldrop contributed to this report.

La. churches rebuilding after fires      Comment   Translate Page

Benjamin Watson may have retired from the New Orleans Saints, but these days, he's repping his community in other ways.

The former NFL tight end spread the word about fundraising efforts for the three historically black churches that burned down in Louisiana's St. Landry Parish in recent weeks.

St. Mary Baptist Church in Porte Barre was set on fire March 26, followed by the Greater Union Baptist Church in Opelousas on April 2 and Mount Pleasant Baptist Church on April 4.

Authorities arrested 21-year-old Holden Matthews in connection with the fires.

Watson sent out a tweet with an address and GoFundMe page where people interested in helping the churches rebuild can send donations.

"It is imperative that we show this community and the entire country that these types of acts do not represent who we are. And most importantly as the body of Christ, we suffer along side our brothers and sisters whenever tragedy, persecution or loss happens," Watson wrote on Twitter.

According to the page, the GoFundMe campaign is an initiative of the Seventh District Baptist Association, a group of about 60 Baptist churches in Southwest Louisiana, including the three churches affected by the fires.

"All of your generous donations will be disbursed equally among all three churches for not only rebuilding their sanctuaries, but for the purchase of all necessities lost in the fires, including pews, sound system, musical instruments, etc.," the GoFundMe page reads.

The campaign had raised more than $25,000 as of Saturday evening.

Church leaders were optimistic about rebuilding and were ready to help their communities start healing.

"It started off a dark moment in our lives, but with the rebuilding process you're going to see some things ... that are going to be very bright for our churches," Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Pastor Gerald Toussaint said.

In the meantime, congregants have been attending services in churches nearby.

"Now, my concern is when do we get back to normal," Harry Richard, pastor of Greater Union Baptist Church, told CNN affiliate KLFY. "When do we put our church family back in their home?"

CNN's Christina Maxouris, Samira Said and Josh Campbell contributed to this report.

Major Melon Recall For Salmonella Includes Target, Walmart, Whole Foods, Kroger, And More      Comment   Translate Page

    A number of watermelons.

A voluntary recall by Caito Foods including pre-cut watermelon, honeydew melon, cantaloupe, and fruit medley products is underway as the company reports a possible salmonella contamination, CNN reports. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration made the announcement on Friday.

So far 93 suspected salmonella cases have been reported. The outbreak now spans a total of nine states: Alabama, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin. While there are no known deaths as a result of the contamination, 23 individuals have been hospitalized so far.

According to the FDA, Caito Foods has suspended the production and distribution of the problem products while they work with the FDA to identify and mitigate the source of the problem.

Affected products were sold in clamshell containers made of clear plastic. They were sold under a variety of brandname labels, including Amazon, Whole Foods, Kroger, Target, Walmart, and Trader Joe’s. A complete list of all recalled products is posted at FDA.gov.

So far, 93 suspected salmonella cases have been reported.

"Religious Nones" Now Leading Religion Group in US      Comment   Translate Page
This is an amazing graph: those who say they follow no religion are now the leading "religious group" in the US.

My guesses for the reasons behind this trend:

    1. the freedom from social norms unleashed in the '60s.
    2. more education over the decades.
    3. Catholic sex abuse scandals.
    4. Overly political, hypocritical behavior of Christian evangelicals.
    5. Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens, etc.
    6. Longer working hours = less time for traditional social activities such as church, mass or synagogue.
    7. Internet offers a sense of community and connection to the atheists and agnostics.
    Anything else?

Now, when will politicians start catering to the Religious Nones in the same way they cater to Christians?

Pele recovering after kidney stone procedure in Brazil      Comment   Translate Page

Soccer legend Pelé is recovering after a procedure in Brazil to remove kidney stones, doctors said Saturday, according to state-run Agencia Brasil.

"The procedure was successful and he is already in the room, in good general condition from the clinical point of view, according to his doctors," the news agency reported.

The 78-year-old, who is widely considered one of the greatest soccer players of all time, was hospitalized in Paris last week because of a urinary tract infection.

Pelé tweeted April 5 that he was feeling "much better" and taking antibiotics. But he was admitted to the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paolo after his return to Brazil on Tuesday, when doctors said he had a urinary tract infection caused by kidney stones, Agencia Brasil reported.

Known as "The Black Pearl" and simply "The King," Pelé is one of the best-known names in all of sports, and the only soccer player in history to have won three World Cups.

He burst onto the scene as a teenager, helping lead his native Brazil to the 1958 World Cup championship. Pele went on to star on two other World Cup title teams, in 1962 and 1970, in addition to having a breakthrough career with the Brazilian club Santos and later with the New York Cosmos of the now-defunct North American Soccer League.

Even after retiring from football, Pelé has remained in the public eye as a product pitchman, ambassador for the sport of football and advocate for Brazil's poor, having grown up among them in Tres Coracoes.

In 2015, Pelé was hospitalized in Brazil because of an enlarged prostate. A year earlier, he had to have several days of kidney dialysis.

Tiger Woods poised to strike as Francesco Molinari leads Masters      Comment   Translate Page

If Saturday at the Masters was electric, Sunday could be supercharged.

The threat of severe thunderstorms has forced Augusta National officials to instigate a two-tee start in groups of three, with the leading trio of Francesco Molinari, Tiger Woods and Tony Finau off at 09:20 a.m. ET instead of in pairs mid afternoon.

The hope is to get the fireworks wrapped up on the course before they come down from the sky.

In Saturday's third round, if you weren't surging forwards you were going backwards.

Four-time champion Woods parred his first four holes and was disappearing in the leaders' rear view mirror, but when he finally engaged gear at the seventh, he, too, roared up the leaderboard. A fifth birdie at the 16th sparked a tumultuous roar as he tied for the lead.

By the end of a sun-drenched, dazzling day of golf, Italy's British Open champion Molinari held a two-shot lead at 13 under over Woods and Finau going into the final round.

    'Great test'

Woods, of course, is trying to pull off a fairytale comeback with a fifth Green Jacket 14 years after his last, and a 15th major 11 years after his previous triumph. Inspired by his comeback season last year from spine fusion surgery, including second at the US PGA and culminating in a first victory for five years at the Tour Championship, Woods is rekindling memories of his heyday.

The 43-year-old has now been in white-hot contention in his last three majors and retains the steely focus of the old warrior.

"This is a chance to win a major championship so I'm ready," he told BBC Sport, talking of Sunday's early start. Woods also said he was embracing the idea of adding to his major tally.

"That's part of the deal," he said. "I'm playing for my fifth but I'm trying to win a golf tournament at the end of the day. I've just got to go out and execute. It's going to be a great test for all of us."

    'Good fun'

Off the course, the consensus is Woods has mellowed over the years and become more approachable after his injury woes and life struggles. Walking off the 18th following his impressive and at times fortunate 67 Saturday -- three times he drove into trees but escaped with a shot at the green -- he was all smiles and trading high and low fives with children and patrons lining the ropes.

"Since he's come back to the sport he hangs out more, he wants to enjoy the life," said Europe's Ryder Cup captain Padraig Harrington, a three-time major champion, talking to BBC Sport.

England's Ian Poulter, Woods' playing partner Saturday, said of the circus that comes with playing with him: "It's never easy. It's always loud, especially when he's making plenty of birdies. But it was fun, he was good fun to play with."

Molinari held off the charging Woods to clinch the Open at Carnoustie last year and has previous with the American at Augusta. Molinari first attended the Masters as a caddie for elder brother Edoardo, the US amateur champion, in 2006. They played alongside defending champion Woods in the first round.

    'Hogan-like'

Now, after a stellar season last year, and further success this term, the Italian could be the one to deprive the old master. The last player to win the Open and then clinch the next Masters? Yep. Woods.

Molinari has always been a solid player, but his work with renowned performance coach Dave Alred, alongside swing tutor Denis Pugh, is paying dividends as he translates pressure and accountability in practice into an ice-cool demeanor on the course. He emerged from Saturday's melee with a bogey-free 66 -- making it 43 straight holes without a bogey -- to set a relentless pace.

"This is Hogan-like," said BBC commentator Ken Brown, referring to legendary US pro Ben Hogan, who won nine major titles.

READ: Dave Alred: The guru teaching golfers think like 'assassins'

Then there's Finau, the man who dislocated his ankle celebrating a shot in the par-3 contest on his debut last year before going on to finish tied 10th. The Salt Lake City native, the first player of Tongan-Samoan heritage on Tour, led the charge for most of Saturday. He was the first to push the lead to 10 under as he chases only his second top-flight victory and first major title.

"I'm driving the ball nicely and I can attack the golf course if I'm driving well," said Finau, who was one of three players to shoot 64. "I feel good, I feel comfortable.

"More than anything I needed to keep my foot on the gas pedal."

READ: Tiger Woods: I don't need to win the Masters, but I really want to'

    Wild Sunday

The softer, more receptive course meant good scores were attainable and Webb Simpson and Patrick Cantlay also shot 64s -- previously there had only ever been one round of 64 or better in a single Masters tournament. However, forecast strengthening winds and the threat of storms could make scoring more difficult Sunday.

In recent times, the Masters champion has tended to come from the final pairing, but the nature of this year's event suggests this one might be less predictable.

Behind the leading trio lurks American Brooks Koepka, the reigning US PGA and two-time US Open champion who has won three of his last six majors.

Koepka began Saturday in a five-way tie for the lead, with Molinari among others, but he trod water for much of the round before an eagle at the 15th en route to a 69 took him to 10 under.

Simpson, the 2012 US Open champion, and the 43-year-old Poulter, who is still chasing a first major despite his long-time Ryder Cup heroics for Europe, sit on nine under.

In all, 10 players are within five shots of the lead, but the rest will be aware the record comeback over the final 18 holes at the Masters is the eight shots Jack Burke Jr. made up to win in 1956.

Nick Faldo also overhauled a six-shot deficit to beat Greg Norman by five in 1996.

Buckle up. Sunday could be wild.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg thanks US women's soccer team for jersey      Comment   Translate Page

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg now has a new shirt she can wear for her workouts.

The associate justice wrote to the US Women's national soccer team last month, thanking them for a jersey that honored her during the team's SheBelieves Cup.

Defender Becky Sauerbrunn had worn the jersey with Ginsburg's name on her back for the SheBelieves Cup, which celebrates trailblazing women, and gifted it to the associate justice.

"For the surprise package received today, huge thanks," Ginsburg wrote in the letter dated March 29, which Sauerbrunn shared on Twitter. "I am proud to be among the women chosen for recognition in the 2019 SheBelieves game against England."

"The jersey will be my favorite for the biweekly workouts that keep me in shape," said Ginsburg, 86, who routinely exercises with a personal trainer.

Each player on the US women's soccer team donned a jersey with the name of a different woman who inspires them for their SheBelieves Cup match against England on March 2.

The team paid tribute to a wide range of women across disciplines and time.

Sauerbrunn had chosen to wear a kit with Ginsburg's name on the back, calling the justice a "complete rock star."

"Dissenting opinion, battling cancer and then showing up to vote ... what can't she do?" Sauerbrunn said. "I just think she's amazing."

    Promoting "the foreign menace"

    by Tom Sullivan

    WWE's The Iron Sheik.

It is never clear how much the sitting president's Trumpish (is that a word now?) behavior is WWE theater for atavist fans or the product of his genuinely warped soul. Accidents do happen in wrestling, a.k.a., sports entertainment, and performers sometimes get injured. But that's never the plan. With Donald Trump, it is hard to tell the difference.

His incitement to violence, one can argue, has already provoked killings in Pittsburgh. It provoked an aborted spate of bombings against his critics across the country. Hate crimes are up 226 percent in counties that hosted Trump political rallies. Plus, death threats against prominent players known in wrestling tradition as "the foreign menace." In wrestling, fans love to hate the foreign Others, with their strange dress and un-Real American™ accents. All-American wrasslin' heroes shine the brighter for not fighting dirty. Not like Them.

In Trump's America, however, fighting dirty is what fans come to cheer. What once was a democratic republic looks more like an arena event where Truth, Justice, and the American Way are for weaklings and losers. Vanquishing the Others and/or banishing those his fans have been trained to fear is all that matters. Their favorite promoter is happy to oblige. He'd throw a few foreign menaces to the lions in person if not for his squeamishness at seeing blood. But he'll sponsor the spectacle from afar. Not, of course, without teasing it relentlessly first to maximize the audience.

    And so he has:
President Trump on Friday tweeted a video attacking Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) for the way she phrased a reference to 9/11, adding fuel to a controversy that has swelled in Republican political circles this week.
The thing is as vile as you've come to expect. It takes a poorly phrased line of a speech on Islamophobia and makes it an apologia for Islamist terrorism. Zak Cheney-Rice writes at New York magazine:
Such an ungenerous interpretation of her remarks is only possible if one is inclined to believe that Omar sympathizes more with terrorists than her murdered countrymen. That she spoke them in the course of decrying Islamophobia makes it especially disconcerting that her political opponents would decontextualize them to fan the flames — she receives regular death threats on the basis of her faith, including from one New York man who threatened recently to “put a bullet in her fucking skull.”
This man and the rest have crossed over from WWE kayfabe to real violence. In the land of the fear and the home of the knave, there is no longer any distinction.

              Science updates!      Comment   Translate Page

It's hard to evade politics, even in a weekend science update. for example when a top Republican factotum declares: “Science is a Democrat thing.”

Um. They say it proudly! Yes, science, but also every single fact-based profession. Including medicine, law, teaching, journalism and those "deep state" enemies -- the Intel/FBI/military officer corps -- who know that fact and science and climate change are real.

== Long ago at least they had an excuse for ignorance... ==

As we re-examine our distant past...

We’re finding numerous past eras when the male population in a region was winnowed to a narrow gene pool or else replaced by newcomers. One massive swing happened about 12,000 years ago, about the same time that two technologies might have exacerbated male death rates: agricultural kingdoms and the availability of plentiful beer. (This is actually my own theory, based upon traveller reports from Polynesia and other places that told of kings ordering the instant death of offending louts. It would help explain human resistance to addiction, which though terribly imperfect is greater than in most species.)

Now comes evidence that a mass migration of males transformed the genetic make-up of people in Spain during the Bronze Age. It remains unclear whether there was a violent invasion or whether a male-centric social structure played an important role.” Interesting article!  And yet, in my “contrarian gadfly” role, I must point out that while dominance by top king-chief-patriarchs seems the most likely explanation, there IS another way that a Y chromosome winnowing could have occurred.

Female dominance. There have been a few cases of matriarchy in which women councils exerted strong control over which males were allowed to breed. It is quite conceivable (get it?) for such councils to enforce hypergamy – preference to share those males who meet strict standards, rather than “settle” for average.

A mild version of this practice was seen among the Cherokee and Iroquois, for example.  Yes, our sad litany of nasty and oppressive patriarchies was far more common. But it’s wrong simply to assume that Y chromosome winnowing happened because of inter-male strife. It might have been female selection, which is actually the great driver of evolution in many non-human species.

== More evidence from the past ==

And the Denisovan story gets even more complicated and strange: our Denisovan cousins may have mated with modern humans as recently as 15,000 years ago.

A fossil discovery in North Dakota is strongly believed to be a fish that was blasted and killed precisely the very day that the Cretaceous ended with the Chicxulub meteorite impact, 66 million years ago, the most incredible (and precise) paleontological discovery of the century, so far. If this story is even 5% true...wow. Just wow.

Meanwhile a new fossil trove in China - the Qingjiang biota - has yielded thousands of Cambrian period specimens, with dozens of new species, yet to be named.

Gabonionta are the earliest multicellular macroscopic organisms discovered so far, vastly older –by almost 4x ! – than previous evidence for complex life. Known only from their fossilized mucous trails in black shale from Gabon. Likely something like colonial amoebae or slime molds, they seem to have appeared almost right after Earth finally got appreciable oxygen in its atmosphere. Good science reporting.

My old Caltech housemate Joe Kirschvink has done it again, proving (with colleagues) that humans have a small but verified sensitivity to magnetic fields.

    == Tech updates ==

Via Peter Diamandis: Researchers at Boston University have mathematically designed a 3D acoustic metamaterial that can block up to 94 percent of noise flowing through it. Most dramatically, however, the 3D-printed structure reflects noise-producing vibrations without impeding the passage of light or airflow itself.

GauGAN, from NVIDIA, may be the “MS Paint for the AI age.” Using a generative adversarial network (GAN) trained on 1 million Flickr images, GauGAN can create photorealistic images from just a few lines drawn by a user. As an example, a user could click on “tree,” draw a line, and GauGAN will create an image of a tree trunk.

And “Google has successfully shrunk its speech algorithm storage demands down to 80MB, rendering its speech recognizer small enough to fit on your smartphone, and work offline.”

A world game-changer would be to wean billions off cattle or other inefficient and eco-damaging meats, either with vegetable substitutes like the (yummy) Beyond Burger or else real-meat by tissue culture. Latest: “Memphis Meats, for example, recently filed a patent describing a method to create real chicken and beef tissue using CRISPR.”

Goodyear unveiled its new concept Aero tire, designed to run on roads and double as a propulsion system for flying vehicles.  Yes, the tires become rotors capable of downward thrust and lift. Yipe. Amazing tech.

Optical interferometry has long promised to help us parse distant planets from their hugely brighter nearby stars. Now a group claims to have done it. But then, a few weeks later, we got that image of a real black hole(!) via a method very similar.

     == short takes ==

Methane is so good at trapping heat that one ton of the gas causes 32 times as much warming as one ton of CO2. And Methane is spiking. The possible sources are worrisome. The GOP blocked Obama efforts to fund more inspectors to prevent venting from oil fields. But Trump savagely cut them further and progress toward an international treaty have foundered.

Even worse are signs that methane is bubbling forth from permafrost and undersea hydrate ices, threatening the “blurp” cascade that would truly make it all deadly, making Earth an almost literal hell. These people are outright enemies of your children.

Slime molds’ ability to reconfigure their volume while fleeing from spots of light has enabled scientists to use these biological computers to solve complex mathematical  conundrums like the Traveling Salesman Problem.

An article on Vox discusses the latest silly-wrongheaded attempt by zealots to shout “messages” into the cosmos without ever doing risk analysis or talking it over with the rest of humanity, or allowing their assumptions to be examined. The saddest part is their dislike of science fiction, since SF explores a wide horizon of possibilities, and their religious fanaticism allows for only one.

Evidence that the huge Deccan Traps volcanic eruptions started just before the Yucatan asteroid impact, and hence may have severely weakened the dinosaurs and other species… but then got even worse after the impact, possibly tightening the noose. “The researchers' dates are also consistent with a major shift in the properties of the erupted rock occurring at the same time as the impact. This supports the idea that the impact's seismic effects reached across the entire planet.”

Wired ran a story on Valentine’s Day about OpenAI, the nonprofit institute founded by Elon Musk and Y Combinator founder Sam Altman, which has apparently designed a system that can learn natural language patterns better than any previous attempt so far after feeding it eight million web pages to train it. What is newsworthy to me about this is what they did next: they stopped to consider the implications.  “It could be that someone who has malicious intent would be able to generate high-quality fake news,” an OAI vice president told Wired.

We are a glorious, scientific civilization. Pictures of black holes! SpaceX triple landings! New disease cures! Meat substitutes! And if the enemies of all this want to make this partisan, then let's go.

The giant Stratolaunch at Mojave Airbase hangar.

After years of anticipation, the Giant Stratolaunch, officially the world’s largest plane with a wingspan stretching larger than an American football field, took its first flight on Saturday, according to CNN.

The gargantuan six-engine, twin-hulled airplane has been developed by the Seattle-based Stratolaunch Systems. On Saturday morning, the massive plane took off from the Mojave Air and Space Port and soared in the sky above the Mojave desert for a little over two hours. The company’s CEO, Jean Floyd, who was present at the hangar at the time of the plane’s first flight, could not hide his excitement.

“We finally did it,” Floyd exclaimed, admitting that “it was an emotional moment to watch this bird take flight.”
