  • The Stratolaunch, an aircraft developed to air-launch small satellites, took its first flight on Saturday.
  • Stratolaunch calls its aircraft the world's largest, and it has the world's longest wingspan, though other aircraft exceed it in length.
  • Visit BusinessInsider.com for more stories.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A giant six-engine aircraft with the world's longest wingspan landed its first flight after some two hours in the air Saturday.

The behemoth, twin-fuselage Stratolaunch jet lifted off from Mojave Air and Space Port and climbed into the desert sky 70 miles north of Los Angeles. Founded by the late billionaire Paul G. Allen, Stratolaunch is vying to be a contender in the market for air-launching small satellites.

The aircraft is designed to carry as many as three satellite-laden rockets at a time under the center of its enormous wing, which stretches 385 feet — a longer wingspan than any other aircraft. At an altitude of 35,000 feet, the rockets would be released, ignite their engines and soar into space.

The advantages of such air-launch systems include being able to use numerous airports and avoid the limitations of fixed launch sites which can be affected by weather, air traffic and ship traffic on ocean ranges.

Allen, the cofounder of Microsoft, founded Stratolaunch Systems Corp. in 2011 after emerging in aerospace by funding the development of the experimental air-launched SpaceShipOne, which in 2004 became the first privately built manned rocket to reach space.

After Allen's death in October 2018, Stratolaunch dropped plans to develop its own type of rocket engine and a family of launch vehicles, focusing instead on getting the giant plane airborne and launching Northrop Grumman's proven Pegasus XL.

Boeing's problems are mounting and things are going to get worse before they get better (BA) Comment Translate Page

Boeing 737 Max train

  • Boeing has been through a tough month as it faces a bevy of lawsuits and investigations.
  • However, it may have even more serious and fundamental issues to confront such as fixing the design flaw in 737 Max, regaining the trust of passengers and crew, and maybe even coming up with a replacement for the 737 Max.
  • The global fleet of 371 Boeing 737 Max airliners have been grounded since the crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET302.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

It's been a tough 30 days for Boeing. In the month since the tragic crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET302, the American aviation giant has seen its hot-selling 737 Max airliner grounded, its stock plunged 10%, and its reputation tarnished by the scandal.

Boeing admitted last week that a faulty sensor triggered the 737 Max's Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System or MCAS on both the Lion Air Flight JT610 and the Ethiopian Airlines plane. The system's activation precipitated nose dives that likely led to both crashes.

"The 737 Max grounding and what we are learning from it shows that this is not the typical airplane accident we've seen in the past and this is not the typical airplane grounding we've seen recently," Henry Harteveldt, travel industry analyst and founder of Atmosphere Research Group, told Business Insider. "This is a very serious problem for Boeing and a big problem for the airline operators and a problem I don't think will be easy to fix."

Read more: Boeing's reputation has been stained by the 737 Max, and it's going to have to fight to convince people the plane is safe.

This week, Boeing investors filed a proposed class-action lawsuit in Chicago alleging the company defrauded its shareholders by failing to reveal potential safety shortcomings of the 737 Max airliner after two fatal crashes in five months.

Lawyers representing the 346 victims of Lion Air Flight JT610 and the Ethiopian crash have filed multiple suits against Boeing.

Boeing 737 MAXAt the same time, the airlines whose 371 grounded 737 Max are sitting in storage collecting dust have initiated compensation proceedings to collect damages from Boeing.

Boeing's troubles are mounting and things are going to get worse before it gets better.

Design trouble

The US Department of Transportation has commenced an audit on how the Federal Aviation Administration managed to certify the 737 Max to fly with substantial control issues.

Boeing and the FAA's cozy relationship has come under scrutiny from members of Congress.

Certification issues aside, Boeing will have to answer for the design flaw that is at the heart of the controversy surrounding the 737 Max in the coming weeks and months.

To fit the Max's larger, more fuel-efficient engines, Boeing had to position the engine farther forward and up. This change disrupted the plane's center of gravity and caused the Max to have a tendency to tip its nose upward during flight, increasing the likelihood of a stall. In response, Boeing created MCAS as a software fix to automatically counteract that tendency and point the nose of the plane down when the plane's angle-of-attack (AOA) sensor triggers a warning.

"MCAS was a band-aid that infected the wound instead of healing it," Ross Aimer, an aviation consultant and former Boeing 787 training captain, said in an interview with Business Insider.

Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 Max 8 ET AVJOne of the most confounding issues with MCAS is that it can be triggered by a single AOA sensor even though there are two on the plane. This is a departure from Boeing standard operating procedure which normally calls for a dual point of failure.

"Since you have two (AOA sensors) in order to get certified, why not use them, I just don't understand it," aviation consultant and former aeronautical engineer Robert Mann told Business Insider in an interview.

"From a design perspective, it doesn't make any sense."

Pilots and passengers don't trust the 737 Max

One of the 737 Max's greatest selling points was the idea that it could be easily integrated into existing 737 fleets with minimal additional training. Since the 737 has long been one of the most dependable airplanes in the world, this congruency helped make the 737 Max a hot seller.

However, the 737 Max is a very different plane from the 737NG it replaced. It has new engines mounted in a different location, redesigned wings, and new avionics. These are all things the pilots knew about.

What they didn't know was that MCAS had been installed on the 737 Max. Pilots found out about MCAS being on the plane after the Lion Air 737 Max crash into the Java Sea on October 28.

Boeing 737 Max 8 cockpit"Boeing in the past always told the pilots and airlines exactly what was on those airplanes," Aimer said. "I have been a Boeing pilot for over 50 years and have loved their products, but they have lost my trust."

Aimer, who is the CEO of Aviation Consulting Experts and a retired United Airlines Captain, feels like Boeing put money ahead of the well-being of passengers and crew.

"Boeing kept that from us purely because they didn't want to bother the airlines with some extra training," he told us. "This was purely a monetary decision on behalf of Boeing and the airlines themselves to keep this away from the pilots and the result was disastrous."

And then there's the traveling public.

poll conducted by Business Insider a week after the Ethiopian crash showed that 53% of American adults would not want to fly on a Boeing 737 Max even after the FAA clears the aircraft for service.

"The 737 Max has stained Boeing's brand reputation," Harteveldt said. "This can't be denied."

Business Insider reached out to Boeing for comment on the matter. A Boeing spokesperson noted that company CEO Dennis Muilenberg made a speech on Thursday touting the need to regain public trust.

"We know every person who steps aboard one of our airplanes places their trust in us," Muilenburg said in the speech. "We’ll do everything possible to earn and re-earn that trust and confidence from our airline customers and the flying public in the weeks and months ahead."

"We take the responsibility to build and deliver airplanes that are safe to fly and can be safely flown by every single one of the professional and dedicated pilots all around the world," the Boeing CEO added.

Boeing might need a replacement for the 737 Max

The Boeing 737 Max is the fastest-selling plane in Boeing history. It's the latest generation of Boeing's money-making 737 family of airliners.

The various versions of the Boeing 737 currently account for 80% of Boeing's 5,800-plane order backlog.

It's going to be an uphill battle for Boeing to restore confidence in the grounded jet.

"You can't hide the 737, you've got thousands of them of all types flying worldwide today for airlines," Harteveldt said.

As a result, you can't simply rebrand the plane.

Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 Max 8 storage"People are going to see right through that," he added.

Therefore, Boeing is going to either have to convince people to fly the 737 Max or come up with a replacement.

"Yes, (737 Max) is the last iteration," Teal Group aviation analyst Richard Aboulafia told Business Insider in March. "They ran out of steam in terms of range and capacity."

That means whichever aircraft Boeing chooses to replace the 737 will be a clean sheet design.

It's not all gloom and doom for Boeing

The situation Boeing finds itself in is not insurmountable.

Aimer said Boeing's engineering team should be able to come up with an effective fix for the 737 Max.

"They can fix this issue, right now they need to be honest and forthright and try to fix this issue to the best of their ability," Aimer said.

Boeing 737 MAX 8 airlinerHarteveldt said Boeing can convince passengers to feel safe in the 737 Max.

"Boeing has to become a bit more of a consumer-facing organization to reinstill confidence in its brand so that the saying 'if it's not Boeing I'm not going' can be said again with pride by travelers," the analyst said.

On the other hand, Mann believes Boeing won't have to do much to get people to return to the 737 Max.

"Once the airplane routinely does what it's designed to do and safely, all of this goes away. And it's crass to say it, but the fact is the traveling public has a very short memory," Mann said.

MH370 BOMBSHELL: Missing Malaysia Airlines plane landed in a 'secret ABANDONED airport'

MH370 is believed to have landed in a secret abandoned airport after it disappeared, according to Andre Milne of Unicorn Aerospace.

PUBLISHED: 05:28, Sat, Apr 13, 2019 | UPDATED: 10:57, Sat, Apr 13, 2019

Malaysia Airlines flight 370 went missing on March 8 2014 en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board. The Boeing 777 has not been found to this day. In a previous Express.co.uk article, it was revealed the plane may have landed and taken off again in the hours immediately after its disappearance

Now, fresh claims from Mr Milne indicate it could have landed in an abandoned airport in Cambodia - and he believes he knows the coordinates of its location.

The coordinates he gave are latitude 12.2558, longitude 104.5667.

This location is around 100km north of Phnom Penh.

Mr Milne said: “The now abandoned airport, called Kampong Chhnang, has intact hard paved runways of +/- 9000 feet.”

World’s Largest Plane Makes First Flight Over California Comment Translate Page
The world’s largest aircraft took off over the Mojave Desert in California Saturday, the first flight for the carbon-composite plane built by Stratolaunch Systems Corp., started by late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, as the company enters the lucrative private space market. The white airplane called Roc, which has a wingspan the length of an American football field and is powered by six engines on a twin fuselage, took to the air shortly before 7 a.m. Pacific time (1400 GMT) and stayed aloft for more than two hours before landing safely back at the Mojave Air and Space Port as a crowd of hundreds of people cheered. First flight 'fantastic' “What a fantastic first flight,” Stratolaunch Chief Executive Officer Jean Floyd said in a statement posted to the company’s website. “Today’s flight furthers our mission to provide a flexible alternative to ground launched systems,” Floyd said. “We are incredibly proud of the Stratolaunch team, today’s flight crew, our partners at Northrup Grumman’s Scaled Composites and the Mojave Air and Space Port.” The plane is designed to drop rockets and other space vehicles weighing up to 500,000 pounds at an altitude of 35,000 feet and has been billed by the company as making satellite deployment as “easy as booking an airline flight.” Saturday’s flight, which saw the plane reach a maximum speed of 189 mph and altitudes of 17,000 feet, was meant to test its performance and handling qualities, according to Stratolaunch. Demand for satellite deployment Allen, who co-founded Microsoft with Bill Gates in 1975, announced in 2011 that he had formed the privately funded Stratolaunch. The company seeks to cash in on higher demand in coming years for vessels that can put satellites in orbit, competing in the United States with other space entrepreneurs and industry stalwarts such as Elon Musk’s SpaceX and United Launch Alliance, a partnership between Boeing and Lockheed Martin. Stratolaunch has said that it intends to launch its first rockets from the Roc in 2020 at the earliest. Allen died in October 2018 while suffering from non-Hodgkins’ lymphoma, just months after the plane’s development was unveiled. “We all know Paul would have been proud to witness today’s historic achievement,” said Jody Allen, Chair of Vulcan Inc and Trustee of the Paul G. Allen Trust. “The aircraft is a remarkable engineering achievement and we congratulate everyone involved.”

Stratolaunch takes off: World's largest plane - with 117-metre wingspan - completes first flight Comment Translate Page

Stratolaunch takes off: World's largest plane - with 117-metre wingspan - completes first flightThe world's largest airplane - a behemoth boasting six engines, two fuselages and a wingspan broader than a football pitch - made its first test flight on Saturday in California. Taking to the skies over the Mojave Desert in California on Saturday, it was the first flight for the carbon-composite plane built by Stratolaunch Systems, started by late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, as the company enters the lucrative private space market. Designed to send humans into space at a fraction of the cost of rockets, the white airplane called Roc took off shortly before 7 a.m. Pacific time (3pm UK time) and stayed in the air for more than two hours before landing safely back at the Mojave Air and Space Port, where a crowd of hundreds of people cheered. "What a fantastic first flight," Stratolaunch Chief Executive Officer Jean Floyd said. "Today’s flight furthers our mission to provide a flexible alternative to ground launched systems, Mr Floyd said. Thrilled to share that today the Stratolaunch aircraft flew for the first time! ✈ Check out the video here ⬇ StratoFirstFlighthttps://t.co/rluHdNRtJ4— Stratolaunch (@Stratolaunch) April 14, 2019 "We are incredibly proud of the Stratolaunch team, today’s flight crew, our partners at Northrup Grumman’s Scaled Composites and the Mojave Air and Space Port." The plane is designed to drop rockets and other space vehicles weighing up to 500,000 pounds at an altitude of 35,000 feet and has been billed by the company as making satellite deployment as "easy as booking an airline flight." Saturday's flight, which saw the plane reach a maximum speed of 189 miles per hour and altitudes of 17,000 feet, was meant to test its performance and handling qualities, according to Stratolaunch. Allen, who co-founded Microsoft with Bill Gates in 1975, announced in 2011 that he had formed the privately funded Stratolaunch. The Stratolaunch aircraft has two fuselages and is powered by six Boeing 747 engines Credit: AFP The company seeks to cash in on higher demand in coming years for vessels that can put satellites in orbit, competing in the United States with other space entrepreneurs such as Elon Musk’s SpaceX and United Launch Alliance - a partnership between Boeing and Lockheed Martin. Stratolaunch has said that it intends to launch its first rockets from the Roc in 2020 at the earliest. Allen died in October 2018 while suffering from non-Hodgkins' lymphoma, just months after the plane's development was unveiled. "We all know Paul would have been proud to witness today’s historic achievement," said Jody Allen, Chair of Vulcan Inc and Trustee of the Paul G. Allen Trust. "The aircraft is a remarkable engineering achievement and we congratulate everyone involved."

WASHINGTON: The world’s largest airplane — a Stratolaunch behemoth with two fuselages and six Boeing 747 engines — made its first test flight on Saturday in California.
The mega jet carried out its maiden voyage over the Mojave desert.
It is designed to carry into space, and drop, a rocket that would in turn ignite to deploy satellites.
It is supposed to provide a more flexible way to deploy satellites than vertical takeoff rockets because this way all you need is a long runway for takeoff.

Summer holiday woes: Air fares set to rise amid Jet crisis Comment Translate Page

New Delhi/Mumbai: The 2019 summer holiday travel season is expected to be marred by high air fares as debt-ridden Jet Airways gradually truncates flight operations, experts said.

Even though the airline, lenders and the government are still hopeful of a revival, the current trend might see Jet operating a bare minimum fleet, thus bumping up air fares.

"The grounding of aircraft due to liquidity issues with Jet Airways and regulatory directive for the grounding of B737 Max aircraft have resulted in 15 per cent impact on the industry capacity," said Kinjal Shah, Vice President, Corporate Ratings, ICRA.

"This has definitely resulted in passenger inconvenience. Furthermore, it has resulted in a significant increase in fares. With the industry capacity remaining constrained, the fares are expected to remain high in the near term."

Jet's woes assume criticality as the airline which once operated around 120 aircraft is left with just 16 in its fleet. Last Friday it operated 11 aircraft.

The airline has currently suspended international operations till the weekend. It has also cancelled domestic flights, leaving passengers stranded at various airports. This led even the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) to assess Jet Airways' financial situation.

"With Jet now cancelling international flights, the rising fare situation is set to get worse if capacity is not increased before peak summer travel season," said Aloke Bajpai, CEO and Co-founder, ixigo.

"A comparative analysis of April 2019 fares and what the scenario was last year shows that fares for flights originating from Delhi have increased by 19 per cent and fares for flights from Mumbai are up by 36 per cent. Passengers who are planning their summer leisure travel will also be impacted due to availability of seats."

According to Sharat Dhall, COO (B2C), Yatra.com said: "With the peak travel season having kicked off, we expect airlines to induct more aircrafts to tap into the increased demand on the key business and leisure routes."

"This will also result in a rationalisation of air fares and we expect them to increase only marginally as compared to the same season last year."

In addition, Dhall said: "We see other carriers adding capacity on a daily basis to fill the demand-supply gap and that is keeping fares under control."

"It is only the last-minute fares that are seeing a jump. So it is unlikely to impact the summer vacation travel season as most leisure travellers book well in advance and will not be impacted."

The trend of high air fares that was triggered due to Jet's truncation of its operations was amplified by oil marketing companies, as they increased the price of aviation turbine fuel (ATF).

Since March 14, passengers had to shell out high fares as several more flights were cancelled due to grounding of Boeing 737-MAX aircraft.

Culmination of these factors are expected to decelerate the growth of air passenger traffic in the country.

In a recent note, ratings agency Fitch said that Indian aviation market has seen a sharp increase in air fares in the last few months due to tight supply, which has been worsened by the suspension of the 737 MAX aircraft.

"Fitch expects the growth in revenue passenger kilometres (RPK), which decelerated to 12.4 per cent in January (2018: 19.9 per cent), to weaken further until supply increases," the rating agency said in a note.

In addition, the note said that Jet Airways, which along with its subsidiary JetLite, had the second-largest share of the domestic market until January, has been steadily losing market share as it has been forced to shrink its operating fleet due to financial troubles.

Pengujian Bertahap

Pesawat Stratolaunch memerlukan waktu pengembangan sekitar 7 tahun lamanya. (Sumber Stratolaunch Systems Corp)#source%3Dgooglier%2Ecom#https%3A%2F%2Fgooglier%2Ecom%2Fpage%2F2019_04_14%2F581703

1. Marques de Riscal —

2. Kokopelli Cave Bed and Breakfast —

3. Malmaison Oxford Castle —

4. Seaventures Dive Resort —

6. Brussels Welcome Hotel —

7. Jumbo Stay —

8. Palacio de Sal —

American Airlines is extending a cancellation of flights aboard any Boeing 737 Max aircrafts in its fleet until August, the company said in a letter to its employees. In the letter, American Airlines CEO Doug Parker and President Robert Isom said that they believed the aircraft would be re-certified before August, but added that removing the planes until then would allow them to better plan for the busy summer travel season. "Once the MAX is re-certified, we anticipate bringing our MAX aircraft back on line as spares to supplement our operation as needed during the summer," the letter states. American Airlines estimates that the cancellations will affect approximately 115 flights per day - or 1.5 percent of the company's total flying each day through August 19.

Estação Espacial Internacional (EEI) (Foto: Pixabay/WikilImages/Creative Commons)

Safety shortcuts are causing Boeing’s crashes | letters Comment Translate Page
Pressures to reduce weight and costs are pushing airlines to override sound engineering measures

I spent many years working on the functional safety of avionics systems so I have some sympathy with Will Hutton’s comments on deregulation (“The Boeing scandal is an indictment of Trump’s corporate America”, Comment). However, they may not be completely fair.

An anti-stall system has the potential to fail catastrophically if it fails to operate when it should or, as seems to have happened, it operates when it should not. In the first case, the pilots may still be able to cope. In the second case, where pilots had not been adequately briefed on how to override it, the system failure is more likely to crash the aircraft. Initial reports suggest that the system only used one sensor, an unbelievable error as at least two should be the minimum, and preferably three, to cope with various failure conditions. If only two are fitted and they give plausible but significantly different data, the failsafe condition involves disabling the anti-stall function and warning the pilots.

American Airlines cancels Max flights through mid-August
NEW YORK (AP) - American Airlines is canceling 115 flights per day through mid-August because of ongoing problems with the Boeing 737 Max aircraft.

The cancellations represent 1.5% of American's total flights each day of the summer.

The U.S. grounded Boeing's 737 Max plane in mid-March after two deadly plane crashes. Boeing aims to finish fixing the planes in late April, and changes would have to be submitted to the Federal Aviation Administration and foreign regulators for approval.

American has 24 Max jets and had previously planned to cancel Max flights through early June. Airline officials say by extending cancellations through the summer they can plan more reliably for the peak travel season.

The airline says its reservations and sales teams will work with customers to manage their travel plans.

PROBLEMAS PARA EEUU TRAS ESTRELLARSE UN F-35 Comment Translate Page

Fifty years of the internet: A internet fez 30 anos? E, claro, Kleinrock não poderia deixar de contar esta delícia, do primeiro lampejo da futura internet: "After we typed the first two letters from our computer room at UCLA, namely, “Lo” for “Login,” the network crashed. Hence, the first internet message was “Lo” as in “Lo and behold” – inadvertently, we had delivered a message that was succinct, powerful, and prophetic".

Ainda hoje. Sobre isto, neste artigo, há um relato verdadeiramente grotesco vindo da União Europeia: "Chernobyl fallout had contaminated much of Europe. When Italy rejected 300,000 tons of radioactive Greek wheat, Greece refused to take it back; the European Economic Community eventually agreed to buy the wheat, which was blended with clean grain and sent to Africa and East Germany in aid shipments". É preciso ajuda alimentar? Então aproveita-se e livramo-nos de alimentos radioativos.

Boeing sold essential safety features as extras on 737 Max: O capitalismo terminal no seu melhor.
