El mundo de los concept y los prototipos es infinito. Con las motos eléctricas este juego ha pasado de nivel. Ya no hace falta un depósito o un motor de combustión que deba ponerse en la moto de una forma predeterminada. Ahora los diseñadores pueden jugar mucho más con la creatividad.

Posiblemente la moto de la que hablamos a continuación tenga uno de los diseños más valientes e irracionales que hayamos visto hasta la fecha. Recuerda a los tribales de Blade o a los X-Men, según el friki que la vea, y su nombre es Racer-X.

El creador de este vehículo tan bizarro se llama Mark Atkinson. Es un diseñador y constructor de motos que va más allá del conservadurismo a la hora de crear una moto desde la nada. Ya lo vimos en el pasado con su BMW 'Alpha'.

La idea de esta moto empezó con una pregunta de Atkinson: "¿qué podría construir si no tuviese ninguna imagen de lo que es una moto? Lo único que tenía claro era que tenía que tener un motor eléctrico y dos ruedas y que los depósitos de gasolina en las motos eran algo muy tonto".

A partir de aquí lo demás fue imaginación. Mark Atkinson quería que la suspensión y la dirección estuviesen en un mismo eje. Dibujó una X en una servilleta y a partir de ese boceto fue desarrollando la idea.

Esta moto está fabricada a partir de un chasis tubular de alumino y la carrocería son paneles de carbono. Antes de esto pensó en fabricarla con un monocasco de fibra de carbono, pero cambió de opinión.

Para conseguir el motor se puso en contacto con el Doctor John Sullivan, quien dirige un equipo de la Universidad Perdue que ha desarrollado una moto eléctrica que ha batido varios récords de velocidad al alcanzar los 185 kilómetros por hora en la Speed Week de Bonneville, lugar donde también ha participado Atkinson. Al cambiar la configuración de la misma, le cedieron el motor que llevaba que tenía una potencia de 38 kW (unos 50 CV). Para suministrar de energía al motor utiliza unas baterías provenientes de un Nissan LEAF.

Para manejar la dirección fabricó un servomotor controlado por un arduino a través de un software de código libre. Debido a esta decisión, el eje de la dirección tuvo que desplazarse del centro de la rueda para poder estar unido al chasis. Y precisamente por su estructura tubular en forma de equís, no tiene una llanta con radios, como tienen las motos convencionales. Por eso existe un espacio en el centro de la rueda.

El nombre de Racer-X surgió de forma instantánea. Kim Lohstroh Young (The Vintagent), organizaba una exhibición de motos eléctricas y se encontró con el prototipo de Atkinson. Quería que la fabricase en menos de tres meses para que se viese en su exposición. Cuando le preguntó el nombre de la moto, el diseñador le contestó que no sabía, que nunca había puesto nombre a una moto, así que sin más, Kim le sugirió Racer-X, y así se quedó.

Ahora viene la gran pregunta: ¿por qué Atkinson ha creado una moto que ni siquiera tiene un sitio donde sentarse (el sillín que ha colocado no puede considerarse asiento)? La respuesta es que su intención es generar nuevas ideas de base para las motos eléctricas que se fabriquen en el futuro.

Quien quiera ver esta excentridad, desde el 6 de abril la motocicleta está expuesta en el Museo de la Automoción de Peterson (Los Ángeles, Estados Unidos) y seguirá ahí durante un año.

Diga-se que estas nossas aventuras na tecnologia já me proporcionaram muitos momentos primeira vez, desde o primeiro workshop de impressão 3D para professores às primeiras formações sobre 3D na educação, e introdução da impressão 3D na sala de aula, entre outros. Há aqui um padrão, sempre em volta do 3D.

Neste workshop, o padrão foi quebrado, dei a minha primeira sessão de introdução à programação e robótica com o robot Anprino. Ainda soa algo incrível, se há anos atrás me dissessem que iri arriscar um momento destes, não acreditaria. Mas tem sido esse o espírito, desde que migrei de EVT para TIC: arriscar, testar, não pensar no porquê, mas sim no e porque não. Agora é hora de analisar e perceber o que se fez bem, o que pode ser melhorado, e como expandir sobre esta experiência.


Anprinos, prontos a andar... com programação. A sessão focou-se em programação simples, mostrando como colocar o Anprino a deslocar-se com sequências e ciclos, utilizando o Ardublockly para Anprino. Falámos também um pouco do projeto e sua génese.


A segunda parte do workshop foi dedicado à programação em Arduino, com robots BQ da ESJS. Os formandos experimentaram programar utilizando o software para Mbot, que permite utilizar programação por blocos em ambiente arduino.


Não tivemos muitos formandos. Mafra é uma zona ainda muito alheada da transformação digital, e isso nota-se na sua comunidade educativa. No entanto, a sessão foi um excelente momento de partilha e troca de experiências. Para nós, foi também uma estreia, a apresentar o Robot Anprino (do qual somos co-criadores) e a dinamizar uma sessão sobre programação. É esse o espírito de aventura na aprendizagem, e um dos leitmotivs do Anprino: arriscar a ir sempre mais à frente.

seit langem wollte ich einen sensor bauen, der ein grosses geschäft im bad anzeigt und entsprechend agiert, zum beispiel den lüfter einschaltet. alle lösungen die mir über die jahre einfielen fanden nicht den gefallen der beifahrerin — zu recht, weil meistens zu unhygienisch. zum beispiel der bewegungsmelder hinter der kloschüssel, der „gesehen“ hat, wenn man nach der klbürste greift. auch druck-schalter oder -sensoren im oder am klodeckel kamen nicht in frage.

donnerstag kam dann eine bestellung aus china an, die die lösung versprach: ein VL53L1X-sensor, der abstandsmessung bis zu 4 meter entfernung auf den millimeter genau vornehmen könnte. der hängt jetzt an der decke über dem klo und schafft es tatsächlich ganz gut das klo zu vermessen. so gut, dass er den unterschied messen kann, ob der klodeckel offen oder zu ist, ob die klobrille hochgeklappt ist oder ob jemand drauf sitzt — alles über abstandsmessung von der decke aus.

sitzt jemand länger als andertalb minuten auf dem klo, geht der lüfter an, jemand der es 10 minuten lang schafft, bekommt einen belohnungs-tusch vorgespielt.

klo-sensor

leider lässt sich der sensor von wasserdampf aus dem tritt bringen, also zum beispiel beim duschen. diese falschen werte lassen sich aber gut ausfiltern, misst der sensor 5 mm abstand von der decke zum klo ist klar, dass eine falschmessung vorliegt. ab und an stellt der sensor seine kontinuierlichen messungen ein. das meldet die bibliothek, die die werte des VL53L1X-sensor ausliest aber freundlicherweise, so dass ich den arduino neustarten kann, der mir die messwerte in die heimautomatisierung funkt.

In the past couple of years I have renewed my computer ed development, building on a strong commitment earlier in my career.

I’m teaching Year 7 computing at __________. I wrote a course based on the ACARA Digital Technologies criteria but can only deliver it in part due to the limited lesson allocation (one term per class, 2 lessons a week).

For these lesson I’ve focused on computer coding using Scratch 3 and the Creative Computing Curriculum Guide (Scratch 3.0) developed by The Creative Computing Lab at the Harvard Graduate School of Education

I’m continuing to explore new ways of making computer coding accessible to students who previously have been disenfranchised, such as the indigenous and girls, as follows:
  • developed a set of indigenous icons suitable for use in Scratch and have used these successfully in class. On my list of things to do is to develop on screen indigenous art using Turtle Art / Turtle Blocks (Brian Silverman version; Walter Bender version)

2018
I completed two courses run by the Computer Science Education Research Group at The School of Computer Science, The University of Adelaide (CSER MOOCs). These were:
  • CSER F-6 Digital Technologies: Foundations course
  • Years 7 and 8 Digital Technologies: Next Steps Making Apps course
The latter course utilised MIT App Inventor and using this program I’ve written several apps for my Android phone

I have published one of my apps online (“Arrernte Language”) which improves the learning of an indigenous language (Arrernte) and could be easily modified for any other language. For me, this was a challenging app to build, my friend Paul helped a lot in a collaborative effort.

Following these courses I read more widely and wrote and published “The teaching of coding” (2,100 words) which outlines a creative and productive way to teach coding.

The latest theory and practice advocates active collaboration between students in the learning of programming. This is built into the online Scratch site (especially with the Remix feature). With this in mind I have also explored the Collabrify suite developed by Elliot Soloway and Cathie Norris.

I’ve purchased a Tello drone and explored its functions

I read “Internet on the Outstation” by Ellie Rennie and co about the still unsolved problems of providing Internet to very remote locations in Australia

I explored the possibility of using RACHEL (Remote Area Community Hotspot for Education and Learning) to solve the problem of poor Internet access to very remote Australians. It's a portable plug-and-play server which stores educational websites and makes that content available over any local (offline) wireless connection

TANGIBLES and the BBC micro:bit
An important recent development in digital education has been low cost tangible devices with microcontrollers which have a beyond the screen input output functionality. I’ve spent a lot of time with the BBC micro:bit, learning MakeCode and MicroPython and have:
  • written a preliminary course outline
  • run micro:bit workshops for IndigiMOB in three Alice Springs town camps and at the Polly Farmer after school program at Centralian Middle School
  • explored micro:bit extensions into electronics with the Kitronik and Monk Makes kits.

EARLIER YEARS

I have:
  • been recognised as a CEGSA (Computing Education Group of South Australia) Leading Light (acknowledging contributions to ICT in Education) in both 2006 and 2007
  • designed courses at Year 11 level which integrate Scratch (Logo) into an ideas-design-evaluate-develop framework
  • run in service sessions in Scratch software for Woodville High School (South Australia) staff and at CEGSA conferences
  • written papers and presented talks at conferences about Logo philosophy and related issues: game making, Seymour Papert's constructionism and Alan Kay's educational philosophy
  • initiated blogs and wikis that evaluated the software on the One Laptop Per Child initiative, which included Scratch and Etoys, another visual drag and drop programming language
  • developed expertise with SNAP, a more high powered reimplementation of Scratch, for upper secondary and University level Computer Science.
  • experience in teaching text based programming languages, in particular, Python

I am an advocate and active user of Open Source software since it is free and often very good. I note the potential of indigenous language dictionaries being incorporated into Libre Office.

I have a long term ongoing interest in the issue of affordable / cheap, reliable computing hardware. I was an active participant in the OLPC (one laptop per child) project and pursue an interest in Raspberry Pi and tablets.
