Winning Play: Handling Hertl      Comment   Translate Page
Carrying over from last year’s series, Tomas Hertl decimated the Vegas Golden Knights, especially down low, in Game 1. The Golden Knights turned the tables in Game 2’s 5-3 victory over the San Jose Sharks. Granted, there was limited 5-on-5 action because of the 11 total power plays. But some possible trends emerged as to how Gerard Gallant will combat Hertl and his line for the rest of the series. Get the Puck Out of Hertl’s Hands Hertl (48) won the draw, but two Golden Knights, Pierre-Edouard Bellemare (41) and Ryan Reaves (75) converged on him. Reaves is most interesting because he left his man, Evander Kane (9), to double-team Hertl. This forced Hertl to surrender it to the open man, but Kane was flat-footed, so Shea Theodore (27) was able to step up on Kane and force a dump-in. Negate Forecheck Because the quick-footed Theodore forced Kane to give the puck up early, Kane couldn’t build up speed. This neutralized the line’s most effective forechecker — as we saw on Joe Thornton’s goal, Kane’s size and spe
Sharks’ Logan Couture thought he lost a testicle on puck to the groin      Comment   Translate Page
San Jose's Logan Couture was in a world of pain after being hit in the groin with a puck during Friday night’s playoff game against Vegas. The Sharks center went down to block a Cody Eakin shot during Game 2 of the first-round playoff series with the Golden Knights. He blocked it successfully but paid a price. Protective cup or not, that is going to hurt. “I thought I lost my testicle,” Couture said after the 5-3 loss. The only thing worse than losing the game is getting hit in the groin and losing on top of it. The teams will meet in Vegas on Sunday with the series tied 1-1.
Quick Bites: Sharks dig early hole, get out, fall back in      Comment   Translate Page
We knew this wasn’t going to be easy. The San Jose Sharks lost Game 2 of their opening round series to the Vegas Golden Knights 5-3. It was a torturous game to watch as a fan, but this is exactly the type of game that you wish you could watch as a neutral observer. It featured plenty of goals and a high level of feistiness from both teams. Let’s start with the glaringly obvious: Martin Jones was bad. He allowed three goals on the first seven shot he saw and was pulled for Aaron Dell less than seven minutes into the game. The Sharks were on the back foot early because they couldn’t get a save from their starting netminder. However, the game was not over at that point. The Sharks’ offense came roaring into life. Logan Couture, Tomas Hertl and Joe Thornton each scored in a 2:09 span to tie the game before the first intermission. The turning point of the game was early in the second period. Brent Burns ripped a shot past Marc-Andre Fleury, to apparently put the Sharks up 4-3. However ... the refs called Couture

Alan Branson has a point. When I studied subliminal suggestions in school, you had to avoid the so called pink elephant syndrome. Say what? PINK ELEPHANTS do not exist, so do not think of them. Cute baby PINK ELEPHANTS with cute bow ties also do not exist so do not think of them. No matter what you do not think of PINK ELEPHANTS. PINK ELEPHANTS are impossible so stop it. (LOL: However, purple elephants are perfectly reasonable). The point is, every time someone does a hate Chick-fil-A piece, and image of Chick-fil-A piece food pops into peoples head and like a Pavlovian dogs, their mouths water, they start getting hungry, and they drive to Chick-fil-A. I think this multi-year campaign is one of the reasons for the Chick-fil-A piece's growth.

Tomas Martinez scored his first goal of the season, Mauro Manotas had two assists and the Houston Dynamo beat the San Jose Earthquakes 2-1 on Saturday for their fourth straight victory.

Martinez ripped a left-footer from near the spot just inside the post to make cap the scoring in the 60th minute.

Alberth Elis first-timed a cross by Manotas to give Houston (4-0-1) a 1-0 lead in the 52nd. On the counter-attack, Elis raced down the right side and beat a defender as he cut back toward the middle, where he played a through pass to Manotas at the corner of the box, who dropped it back to Elis for the finish.

Jackson Yueill, a 22-year-old who was the sixth overall pick in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft, scored his first MLS goal to make it 1-1 in the 56th minute. San Jose (1-5-0) has lost 12 of its last 14 MLS games.

The match was delayed 73 minutes at halftime because of inclement weather.

Trump sanctuary city idea could help migrants stay in U.S.      Comment   Translate Page

PHOENIX – An idea floated by President Donald Trump to send immigrants from the border to “sanctuary cities” to exact revenge on Democratic foes could end up doing the migrants a favor by placing them in locations that make it easier to put down roots and stay in the country.

The plan would put thousands of immigrants in cities that are not only welcoming to them, but also more likely to rebuff federal officials carrying out deportation orders. Many of these locations have more resources to help immigrants make their legal cases to stay in the United States than smaller cities, with some of the nation’s biggest immigration advocacy groups based in places like San Francisco, New York City and Chicago. The downside for the immigrants would be a high cost of living in the cities.

The Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University announced this week that an analysis found that immigrants in sanctuary cities such as New York and Los Angeles are 20% less likely to be arrested out in the community than in cities without such policies.

“With immigrants being less likely to commit crimes than the U.S. born population, and with sanctuary jurisdictions being safer and more productive than non-sanctuary jurisdictions, the data damns this proposal as a politically motivated stunt that seeks to play politics with peoples’ lives,” said George Gascon, district attorney for San Francisco.

Trump has grown increasingly frustrated over the situation at the border, where tens of thousands of immigrant families are crossing each month, many to claim asylum. His administration has attempted several efforts to stop the flow and he recently shook up the top ranks of the Department of Homeland Security.

The idea to ship immigrants to Democratic strongholds was considered twice in recent months, but the White House and Department of Homeland Security said the plan had been rejected. But Trump said Friday he was still considering the idea.

“Due to the fact that Democrats are unwilling to change our very dangerous immigration laws, we are indeed, as reported, giving strong considerations to placing Illegal Immigrants in Sanctuary Cities only,” Trump tweeted. He added that, “The Radical Left always seems to have an Open Borders, Open Arms policy – so this should make them very happy!”

Wilson Romero is an immigrant from Honduras who chose to settle in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Romero, 27, was separated from his daughter, now 7, by federal authorities at the U.S. border at El Paso, Texas, last year and jailed for three months before being released and making his way to live with his mother in San Jose, California. There he was reunited with his daughter, who attends public kindergarten.

Romero says he goes about daily errands in public without worry of discrimination. His daughter has made friends and has playdates with the children of Mexican American families. It’s a far cry from his hometown in the violence-plagued outskirts of San Pedro Sula, Honduras, that he fled after his brother-in-law was killed.

To him, the biggest problem with being in the Bay Area is the high cost of living. The former textile factory worker relies on his mother’s income from waitressing for food and clothing, and he’s started thinking about asking legal permission to move to North Carolina, where an uncle resides and says it’s cheaper to live and work.

“To tell the truth, it’s a little tight now, financially speaking,” said Romero, a former textile factory worker, who said he doesn’t know of any charities that may be willing to help.

The plan discussed by Trump would also have financial, logistical and legal issues.

The transportation of immigrants who are arrested at the border to large and faraway cities would be burdensome and costly at a time when Immigration and Customs Enforcement is already stretched thin, having released over 125,000 immigrants into the country pending their immigration court since Dec. 21. They are currently being released mainly in border states.

Flights chartered by ICE cost about $7,785 per flight hour, according to the agency, and require multiple staffers, including an in-flight medical professional. The agency also uses commercial flights. Doing longer transports would increase liability for the agency, especially considering that many of the immigrants in its care are families with young children.

And despite the consideration given to releasing the immigrants on the streets to sanctuary cities, the Trump administration actually has plenty of jail space to detain families. As of April 11, the nation’s three facilities to detain immigrant families were nowhere near capacity, including a Pennsylvania facility housing only nine immigrants.

It’s also unclear how long the immigrants would stay in these cities because they are required to provide an address to federal authorities – typically of a family member – as a condition of their release.

“It’s illogical,” said Angela Chan, policy director and senior attorney with the San Francisco-based Asian Law Caucus. “It’s just alarming that they are spending so much effort and so much time to engage in political theater.”

The Trump administration has long pushed back against cities with sanctuary policies, which generally prohibit local authorities to cooperate with federal immigration police, often by refusing to hold people arrested on local charges past their release date at the request of immigration officers. Over 100 local governments around the country have adopted a variety of these polices

“New York City will always be the ultimate city of immigrants – the President’s empty threats won’t change that,” New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio said in a statement.

But Trump seemed ready to step up his fight with the cities, vowing to “give them an unlimited supply” of immigrants from the border.

Associated Press writer Karen Matthews contributed to this report.

Houston, Texas.

Low-Power Technology Summit Proceedings Now Available      Comment   Translate Page

On October 18, 2012 Cadence held a Low-Power Technology Summit at our San Jose, California headquarters. Experts from Cadence and other leading companies presented the latest low-power design methodologies. Well, it took us a while but you can now view the material via the Low-Power Technology Summit Proceedings archive, which just went live.

We've put both video and PDF versions of the presentations there. Obviously the PDFs give you the quickest access to the material, but you'd be missing a lot to just grab those. Seeing and hearing the presenter in action is important, especially when one of the keynotes, entitled "The power wall - are we scaling it or is it just getting higher?", is delivered by a noted expert like Professor Jan Rabaey of the University of California at Berkeley. The videos also have the Q&A sessions at the end of each presentation -- there were lots of good questions, and good interaction. You do need a "Cadence Community" login to access those, so there will be a quick one-time registration for the login if you don't already have it.

Prof. Jan Rabaey presents at the Low Power Technology Summit

As well as the keynote from Professor Rabaey (which Richard Goering also covered in a blog here), there were also presentations from Sathya Subramanian of ARM on Low-Power Design with ARM® Physical IP and POPTM IP, and technical updates from the Cadence team.

My personal highlight from the day was the presentation by Anis Jarrar of Freescale. Anis talked about all the measures they took to meet the aggressive power specifications on the Kinetis family of chips. Kinetis has been highly successful for Freescale, and they really are using all the tricks in the book (and then a few that aren't) to minimize power on these designs. You can also find more about Kinetis here. As well as the usual techniques (clock-gating, multi-Vt, Multi-Supply Voltage, Power Shut-off) they were also an early user of multi-bit register mapping in RTL Compiler. Further, they found a novel way to apply body bias that avoided the need for that inefficient, tricky way to generate a negative bias supply -- the charge pump. The audience was very happy to learn more about Anis's experiences, and the Q&A session for this one was lively and informative.

Finally, the presenters were joined by representatives of Broadcom and Berkeley Wireless Research Center for a panel session moderated by Richard Goering. Panelists provided a great low-power design-related discussion. You can also read Richard's blog on that, for a summary.

Enjoy!

Perspective on Power: 2012 Survey Predicts 2013 as the Year of DVFS      Comment   Translate Page

The recent Low-Power Technology Summit held at Cadence headquarters in San Jose gave us a great opportunity to take the pulse of low-power design by surveying the attendees. Some of the data we got was expected, but there were a couple of surprises.

First, some of the expected stuff. We'd noticed in the last major surveys done almost two years ago (see the Perspective on Power blog from December 2010) that advanced low-power design techniques were starting to be applied outside of mobile (battery-operated) devices, and this trend has increased. 49% of the attendees surveyed worked on non-mobile end-applications. As in 2010, very nearly 100% were already using basic low-power techniques like clock gating and multi-Vt optimization. But the people using advanced techniques "currently" increased from 60% to 70% (see figure below).

As before, we define advanced low power techniques as the ones that apply to power domains - splitting the design into separately-powered areas where the voltage can be shut off to reduce leakage (Power Shut-Off - PSO, aka State Retention Power Gating - SRPG) or supplied with different voltage levels (permanently in the case of Multi-Supply Voltage - MSV, or dynamically in the case of Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling - DVFS).

As in 2010, PSO was the most popular of the advanced techniques, followed by MSV, then DVFS. What was less expected was that, in contrast to 2010 where the "future" use of advanced techniques increased all of them proportionately, in the 2012 results, the designers surveyed were expecting to use a lot more DVFS in their next designs, pushing it into second place in front of MSV.

So why might DVFS become more popular than MSV? Both use different supply voltages for domains that have different performance needs. The difference is that DVFS allows the voltage level, or more usually a combination of voltage and clock speed, to be selected on the fly based on current performance demand. It is therefore a more complex technique to implement and verify, meaning that the designer has to achieve sign-off for power domain to which it applies at multiple modes and corners.

Also, opportunities to apply MSV may have already been fully exploited and designers are looking for more. Recently, design tools such as the Cadence Encounter RTL-to-GDSII flow support design closure for multi-mode multi-corner (MMMC) simulations, which is an important enabler for an increase in the use of DVFS on the next generation of designs.

Low-Power Design Case Studies: 15 CDNLive! Papers So Far This Year       Comment   Translate Page

CDNLive! is back with a bang in 2012, with very strong support from the Cadence user community worldwide. We're three-quarters the way through the events at the time of writing -- you can see the whole program on www.cadence.com at the CDNLive! 2012 Worldwide page. Proceedings are published so far from San Jose, USA; Munich, Germany; and Hsinchu, Taiwan. If you click on those proceedings links, you get to a multitude of different tracks and, for those interested in everything low-power, it can be quite challenging to find all the relevant presentations. So I've saved you the trouble of hunting through by gathering them all here - 12 so far from Cadence customers plus 3 useful presentations from Cadence's own technologists.

Note: you will need to log in with your cadence.com user account to access the papers. If you don't have one, create a Cadence.com User Account now.

Many of these locations have more resources to help immigrants make their legal cases to stay in the United States than smaller cities, with some of the nation’s biggest immigration advocacy groups based in places such as San Francisco, New York City and Chicago.

He added that, “The Radical Left always seems to have an Open Borders, Open Arms policy - so this should make them very happy!”

The transportation of immigrants who are arrested at the border to large and faraway cities would be burdensome and costly at a time when Immigration and Customs Enforcement is already stretched thin, having released more than 125,000 immigrants into the country pending their immigration court since Dec.

It’s also unclear how long the immigrants would stay in these cities because they are required to provide an address to federal authorities - typically of a family member - as a condition of their release.

“New York City will always be the ultimate city of immigrants - the President’s empty threats won’t change that,” New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio said in a statement.

But Trump seemed ready to step up his fight with the cities, vowing to “give them an unlimited supply” of immigrants from the border.

Trump Wants to Bus Migrants to Sanctuary Cities. The Mayors There Are Fine With It.      Comment   Translate Page

Trump Wants to Bus Migrants to Sanctuary Cities. The Mayors There Are Fine With It.JIM WATSONPresident Donald Trump may have assumed that his proposal to release undocumented immigrants into so-called “sanctuary cities” would back Democrats into a corner on the issue of immigration. But the local officials in those cities he’s targeting don’t seem to actually find the prospect all that foreboding. Instead, when asked about the plan—which would entail busing migrants apprehended at the U.S.-Mexico border to be released in cities that do not cooperate with federal law enforcement to arrest undocumented immigrants—mayors of major cities, regional capitals and medium-sized towns told The Daily Beast said that they would welcome those currently being detained.“The city would be prepared to welcome these immigrants just as we have embraced our immigrant communities for decades,” Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney told The Daily Beast in a statement. “This White House plan demonstrates the utter contempt that the Trump administration has for basic human dignity and the core values on which this nation was founded.”“As a welcoming city, we would welcome these migrants with open arms, just as we welcomed Syrian refugees, just as we welcomed Puerto Ricans displaced by Hurricane Maria and just as we welcome Rohingya refugees fleeing genocide in Myanmar,” said Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel in a statement.“I am proud that Cambridge is a sanctuary city,” Mayor Marc McGovern of Cambridge, Massachusetts, told The Daily Beast. “Trump is a schoolyard bully who tries to intimidate and threaten people. I’m not intimidated and if asylum seekers find their way to Cambridge, we’ll welcome them.”The response to Trump’s proposal is almost certainly not what the president expected and reflects the vast gulf that is growing between the two parties on immigration policy. The president’s idea was presented as a threat meant to scare Democrats into admitting that they wouldn’t be as accommodating of immigrant communities as they have pledged to be. “We’ll give ’em to the sanctuary cities, maybe, to take care of, if that’s the way they want it,” Trump said during an event originally intended to pitch U.S. companies on the deployment of 5G technology. “We are looking at the possibility, strongly looking at it, to be honest with you.”“We’ll give them more people,” Trump continued. “We can give them an unlimited supply—let’s see if they have open arms.”How serious the administration is about pushing the idea remains unclear. The White House originally denied that they were seriously considering busing undocumented immigrants and migrants detained at the border to sanctuary cities, saying it was “just a suggestion that was floated and rejected, which ended any further discussion.” But the president has since leaned into it, even tweeting that he was giving it “strong consideration.”That gambit, experts say, is both logistically and legally dubious. And multiple mayors told The Daily Beast that it only makes the Trump administration’s immigration policy look incoherent.“Like so many issues we are forced to talk about during this presidency, this isn’t a real idea or a real proposal, it’s just another scare tactic,” said San Francisco Mayor London Breed. The city, home to the congressional district currently held by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is specifically mentioned as a potential target of Trump’s policy. “Every time we talk about the president’s latest tweet… we aren’t talking about a path to citizenship for the over 10 million undocumented immigrants in our country.”Some pointed out that the proposal would only exacerbate what the president has characterized as an immigration crisis.“Humans are not pawns. This is not a game. These are people’s lives,” said Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler. “Portland will continue to protect its sanctuary status in accordance with Oregon law and the U.S. Constitution. We strongly denounce the cruel efforts of this administration to retaliate against sanctuary cities.”Previous Trump administration threats to retaliate against sanctuary cities have not materialized into actual policy. Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions had vowed to withhold federal law enforcement grants from jurisdictions that declined to cooperate with ICE. But 29 of 30 municipalities that had received Sessions’ letters still ended up receiving those grants. Federal courts also sided with sanctuary cities after Trump issued an executive order restricting federal funding for such cities.“It’s a sign of the president’s tremendous weakness as an executive and weakness as a leader, and of the degree to which he pales in comparison to all of his recent predecessors,” Mayor Daniel Drew of Middletown, Connecticut told The Daily Beast. “This threat is hollow and more than anything is a sign of the tremendous weakness of the Trump administration.”In Coachella, the California desert town famous for its music festival, Mayor Steven Hernandez told The Daily Beast that the city already works with outside organizations to ensure that undocumented immigrants are able to integrate into the community. Were the administration to bus in migrants from the border, Hernandez said, the community would welcome them. “We have already been working alongside partners to ensure that recently arrived families, women and children get the services they need to make their successful transition into America,” he said. Democrats in Congress, meanwhile, were exasperated with the president’s latest immigration gambit, and said they stand willing to work on policy if the White House would quit with the posturing.Rep. Ro Khanna, a California Democrat who represents part of San Jose, a sanctuary jurisdiction, called on Trump to propose “real solutions.”“Most of the communities he believes people should be going to are ones who would believe in just processing and treating people humanely and having that process,” Khanna told The Daily Beast by phone. “Is he gonna pay for people to be flown in there? Is he going to be paying for judges? It’s just logistically infeasible.”Rep. Jamie Raskin, a Democrat who represents Maryland’s Montgomery County, a jurisdiction ICE has called consistently not cooperative, said that the political conditions were actually ripe for negotiations with the White House and congressional Republicans.“It’s unfortunate that the president is in such a dark and vindictive state of mind. I don’t know where he thinks that leads,” added Raskin. “He’s a day trader. He’ll be off on another idea tomorrow.”Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Send it to The Daily Beast here

California Moving Toward Ban On Little Shampoo, Conditioner Bottles From Hotels      Comment   Translate Page
Does anybody want to know why single use products exist? What are the  benefits?

SAN JOSE (KPIX 5) – California is moving toward banning those little bottles of shampoo you get in hotel rooms.
“In California alone hotels use hundreds of millions of single use plastic bottles every year,” said Assembly Member Ash Kalra of San Jose.
Kalra is co-authoring a bill that would ban the tiny plastic bottles at almost 10,000 hotels state wide.
“We can get those bottles out of the waste stream, but also cut the production of them, which is also harmful to the environment,” he said.
Last year Santa Cruz County became the first jurisdiction in California to ban the small bottles.
“This is a significant step forward to make sure that these bottles do not get into the bay,” said Santa Cruz County Supervisor Zack Friend.
Karla’s bill, AB 1162 is working its way through committees in Sacramento. If it passes on the assembly floor later this year, the ban would not take effect for at least three years.

@ChrisT you are COMPLETELY wrong. Black letter law on this is that government speech must be "viewpoint neutral."
Comment on San Jose Airport Will Combat Chick-fil-A With Rainbow Flags by Chris T      Comment   Translate Page
There no first amendment issue if a government wants to put up a rainbow flag on its property, just as in the south there is nothing unconstitutional about flying a confederate flag. Heck if the mayor of a town wanted to put up a Nazi flag in his office that would not be unconstitutional. The obvious non-lawyers including Gary are confusing this political statement with state sponsorship of religion. The government cannot endorse a religion. The rainbow flag is not a religious icon and a local government can post anything it wants including messages supporting all sorts of causes including the rainbow flag, posters about Special Olympics, college teams etc. If a local government makes a political statement on its property you do not like, you have one remedy - vote it out. But you cannot sue because it’s unconstitutional that the government “took a side”. Taking a political side on an issue is what governments are expected to do.

Το macOS 10.15 update θα "χωρίσει" το iTunes      Comment   Translate Page

Californian city mayor urges Trump to stop "fanning hate" over immigrants      Comment   Translate Page

Californian city mayor urges Trump to stop "fanning hate" over immigrants

DF-Xinhua Report

The mayor of the U.S. city of Oakland on Saturday urged President Donald Trump to stop "fanning hate" over his disputed immigration policy.     "It's time to stop fanning hate and division @realDonaldTrump - I've been consistent and clear: #Oakland welcomes all, no matter where you came from or how you got here," mayor Libby Schaaf said on Twitter.     Schaaf was responding to a tweet by Trump Saturday afternoon when the U.S. president seemed to mock Schaaf's earlier statement accusing Trump of planning to send undocumented immigrants to sanctuary cities.     "...So interesting to see the Mayor of Oakland and other Sanctuary Cities NOT WANT our currently 'detained immigrants' after release due to the ridiculous court-ordered 20-day rule. If they don't want to serve our Nation by taking care of them, why should other cities & towns?" Trump tweeted late Saturday.     Sanctuary cities in the United States are known as local jurisdictions that refrain from cooperating with federal authorities and detain undocumented immigrants for possible deportation. Oakland is one along with other Bay Area cities such as San Francisco and San Jose.     Trump's tweet came after Schaaf said in an earlier TV interview that it's not right to divert the resources of local governments to address the issue of undocumented immigrants.     "I am proud to be the mayor of a sanctuary city ... We embrace the diversity in Oakland, and we do not think it's appropriate for us to use local resources to do the government's failed immigration work," she told CNN Friday.     Trump threatened on Friday to release detained undocumented immigrants into sanctuary cities while blaming the country's immigration laws on Democrats.     "Due to the fact that Democrats are unwilling to change our very dangerous immigration laws, we are indeed, as reported, giving strong considerations to placing Illegal Immigrants in Sanctuary Cities only," Trump wrote in a tweet.     Trump's controversial tweets over immigrants have drawn backfire from some sanctuary cities in the Bay Area.     San Francisco Mayor London Breed called Trump's threat "another in a long line of scare tactics and half-baked ideas that are just about chasing headlines and distracting people from real issues."     San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo said his city welcomes any families "who have endured such incredible hardships and have endeavored to make a better life for themselves and their families and want to be a part of our great country."     Schaaf said Trump's idea was "an outrageous abuse of power and public resources."

Off Day: The Cousins Look Back on Game 2      Comment   Translate Page
The Washington Capitals won Game 2 in their Eastern Conference quarterfinal matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes and have an off day before resuming the series in Carolina on Monday night.  The cousins take a break from Sunday brunch to offer some thoughts.

Peerless:  Two games in.  Any surprises?

Fearless:  Carl Hagelin leading the forwards in even strength ice time (15:35, more than a minute per game more than Tom Wilson) qualifies.  Wilson being second in that category would qualify, too.  Wilson has an interesting time on ice profile.  As of Sunday morning, he and Carolina’s Sebastian Aho are the only forwards so far to average at least 14 minutes a game in even strength ice time, more than three minutes of shorthanded ice time, and more than two minutes of power play ice time.

Cheerless: The bottom six forwards have one point – Lars Eller’s empty net goal in Game 1.  The third line of Eller, Carl Hagelin, and Brett Connolly have 11 shots on goal, which isn’t all that bad, so one might think a breakthrough is coming.  The fourth line of Nic Dowd, Chandler Stephenson, and Andre Burakovsky has a total of two shots on goal, both by Dowd.  All of them are averaging less than nine minutes of ice time per game so far.

Peerless: This is a strange place for the Caps, winning Games 1 and 2 on home ice.  They did not do it last season.  They have done it once since 2013, winning Games 1 and 2 at home against Philadelphia in the first round in 2016.  Is this a bad place for them?

Fearless:  Not really.  You’re thinking like “Old Disappointed Caps fan,” not like “New Stanley Cup Champion Caps fan.”  This is a club that last season did not let going down two games on home ice in the first round become a fatal matter, and while they did drop three straight against Tampa Bay after winning Games 1 and 2 on the road in the conference final last spring, they did scratch out wins in Games 6 and 7 to advance to the final.  The point is that the Caps did not get too high with the highs, nor did they get too low with the lows.  There is no reason to think that they won’t behave in similar fashion with largely the same group this season.

Cheerless:  In the back of my mind…y’know, it’s really cluttered back there what with all the…

Peerless: You were saying…

Cheerless: Oh yeah, I just can’t help but think that this is a team that has not finished games all that well this season and that they have allowed Carolina twice to tie games in the third period in this series.  It does not give one the most comfortable feeling that they are just going to put the Hurricanes in a three-game hole.  One thing to think about, though; the Caps went on the road 11 times this season after winning a game on home ice and went 7-3-1 in those games, so it is not as if going on the road stifled their momentum to any large degree.

Peerless: Of 17 goalies to dress so far, only two – San Jose’s Martin Jones and Tampa Bay’s Andrei Vasilevskiy – have worse save percentages than Carolina’s Petr Mrazek.  However, Mrazek has faced only 50 shots.  Only San Jose’s goalies (Jones and Aaron Dell) have faced fewer (49).  The Caps emphasize “quality” over “quantity” of shots, but has 50 shots (not including the empty netter) been too low a number?

Fearless:  I think this is something that will sort itself out, given the way the shots have been distributed so far.  Jakub Vrana (two), T.J. Oshie (two), Evgeny Kuznetsov (one), and Andre Burakovsky (none) have combined for five shots in two games.  In the regular season, those four players combined to average almost eight shots per game as a group.  One has to think that one or more of them will return to some higher level of shots on goal frequency.

Cheerless: Two things to think about here.  First, Mrazek, whether his own or his teammates’ fault, has had awful first period numbers.  In Games 1 and 2, he stopped 11 of 16 first period shots, a .688 save percentage. That would be bad in a beer league.  Compare that with stopping 32 of 33 shots over the second and third periods of those games, a .970 save percentage.  Then there are the third period shots.  The Caps have had a total of 13 third period shots on goal in the two games and have one non-empty net goal (Tom Wilson in Game 2).  Carolina had 18 third period shots on goal with three goals scored.  Maybe the Caps weren’t sitting back, but it sure looked as if they were.

In the end…

Through two games, these teams are almost mirror images of one another.  The Caps get off to fast starts, outscoring Carolina by a 5-1 margin in the first periods of Games 1 and 2, while the Hurricanes finish stronger, outscoring the Caps, 3-2, in the third periods of games (and one of the Caps’ goals was an empty netter).  The Caps, who emphasize quality over quantity in shots, still have the worst shot attempt differential at 5-on-5 of any of the 16 teams left (minus-40), and it’s not close (Dallas is minus-31).

The good thing about that, or the scary thing (if you think the Caps are sitting back with a lead), is that the Caps are minus-39 in 5-on-5 shot attempts when holding a lead.  The next worse team when holding a lead is Toronto at minus-14. But then again, the Caps have held the lead for 75:41 of 181:48 in total ice time in this series.  Carolina has yet to hold a lead, the only one of the 16 teams yet to do so.  And that raises the question going into Game 3, can the Caps continue to play from ahead as the series shifts to Carolina?  A road team able to do that, able to take a crowd out of the game, can make things that much more difficult for a team trying to climb out of an 0-2 hole to make this a series.

Leftists So Furious that Christian Chicken Restaurant Might Be in Airports, They Attack It with Flags      Comment   Translate Page

Officials in San Jose, California, have decided to allow Chick-fil-A to open a restaurant in their city’s airport. This normally wouldn’t be news, but consider the fact that both San Antonio and Buffalo, New York, have blocked the fast-food chain from their airports due to the restaurant’s Christian roots and the fact it gives money…

Curious - what do you guys think would be a comfortable max amount they could buy with their numbers? Asking as I am in the same boat with nearly identical figures and in Very HCOL area

Heavily dependent on various tradeoffs: kids in the near future, other major regular expenses (wedding, regular fancy vacations 20k+/yr, cars) and where they are in their career. If salary is still on the upswing in the late 20s to early/mid 30s then more room to go higher vs. if salary is relatively stable then less so.

Assuming no kids for 3-5 years, salary still on upswing with growth potential and no other main expensive hobbies then in ~$1.2-$1.3M range imo.

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately any decent homes in Silicon Valley with good school districts cost $1.8M+. Our HH income cap is $50K higher probably but that would not come to fruition for 2-3 years. Not much more than that though. Current HH income is $375K. Wedding soon probably and kids much later. Late 20s. Current net worth is over $800K. I save about half my post tax earnings but obviously haven’t been making this income the entire time. If you were me, what would you do terms of buying a house? I just don’t want to overextend myself but I do like nice things.. ugh. $1.3M gets you nothing here and in a bad school systems. And life’s too short to commute 1.5 hours each way and live in an area without any amenities. Thanks!

I've noticed that people who grow up in the Bay Area have a completely negative few of other schools and aren't very willing to change that. My wife has the same problem when we look at homes and I think it partly comes from school rivalry in high school. Part of this might also come from those who went to private schools or the highest rated high schools, whereas parents who went to public schools in other parts of the state are more willing to concede that at the honors/AP level, kids can generally be successful anywhere if the parents are involved.

Secondly, there's plenty of good homes in Silicon Valley with good school districts for under $1.8M. $1.8M would get you are 5 year old 4bed, 4bath 2400 sq ft home in Almaden that feeds into Los Gatos School District. If you go down to the $1.5-1.8M range you can get older homes in Almaden that go into the Almaden schools which are also very highly rated. I don't consider a 4/4 with 2400 square feet that's only 5 years old as only a "decent home". In the 1.2M-1.5M range, either the house or the school district takes a knock but it's definitely in the realm of possibility to find something that works. The bigger question is if you have to commute up to Mountain View/Palo Alto/etc then trying to live in San Jose or East Bay or other locations are unworkable. But for Sunnyvale and south employers it can be workable.

More actionably, if you don't have kids or plan for kids for awhile I'd either continue renting or consider a condo/town home centrally located that would also be big enough to have 1 kid without being overly crowded. Best of luck.

Marc-Edouard Vlasic to miss Game 3 with undisclosed injury      Comment   Translate Page
With the series hitting Vegas and both teams deadlocked at 1-1, the San Jose Sharks already have hit a road bump as The Athletic’s Kevin Kurz reports that the head coach Peter DeBoer said the team will be inserting reserve defenseman Tim Heed into the lineup and Marc-Edouard Vlasic will miss Game 3 with an undisclosed injury. Vlasic left Friday’s game during the second period after replays look like he blocked a shot from Shea Theodore with his arm, although Kurz wonders whether the shot may have gone off his head. DeBoer declined to reveal where the puck hit Vlasic. While the 32-year-old’s point totals have dropped this season, he still is the team’s third-best defenseman on the team behind Brent Burns and Erik Karlsson and averaged 21:07 of ice time this season, which will be a big loss for a Sharks’ team that will want to win one of the next two games to regain home-ice advantage. The loss of Vlasic will likely mean even more minutes for both Burns and Karlsson. Burns has averaged more than 28 minutes in
