OKLAHOMA CITY — An investigation has been launched into the caretakers of a 23-year-old disabled man who checked into the hospital weighing 30 pounds. When News 4 asked what made the family decide to take him to the hospital, the man’s grandmother replied, “Because he got limp.” According to police, Juanita Wooten’s grandson was admitted to OU Children’s Hospital for “severe malnutrition and having flu like symptoms.” Police say the patient is 23 years old and is fighting for his life, […]
Record Store Day exclusive: Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne shares the oral history of the 'King's Mouth' art installation and album      Comment   Translate Page

Into the 'King's Mouth':
Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne shares the wild and winding history of his hometown art project, traveling installation and new album

About four years ago, Wayne Coyne penned and painted a fantastical fable of a giant future monarch, his noble sacrifice and “a mega funeral parade” to accompany his hometown art installation the “King’s Mouth.”

The origin story of The Flaming Lips’ regal Oklahoma City artwork, which has spawned a traveling version, a companion book, cereal-scented tie-in merchandise and now a golden Record Store Day vinyl album release, is less majestic.

But since that back story involves a bizarre Japanese game show, smelly dancers and hundreds of foil balloons, it’s maybe not that much weirder than the otherworldly mythology Coyne conjured.

Interviews, photos and video: Wayne Coyne and Flaming Lips turn music inspired by newly reopened OKC art installation 'King's Mouth' into Record Store Day release      Comment   Translate Page

An abbreviated version of this story appears in Friday's The Oklahoman.

Long live the 'King’s Mouth': Flaming Lips' Record Store Day release has its origins in hometown art installation

Over the past decade, The Flaming Lips have ruled Record Store Day with unusual offerings ranging from songs on USB drives stuck inside gummy skulls and gummy fetuses to last year’s vinyl collectible filled with a special pink beer called Dragons & YumYums.

This year, the Grammy-winning art rockers are offering up music fit for a king that has recently resumed his reign in their hometown.

The Oklahoma City-based band’s 15th studio album, “King’s Mouth: Music and Songs,” will be released this Saturday, which is Record Store Day 2019, in a limited-edition gold vinyl pressing of 4,000 copies.

The follow-up to 2017’s “Oczy Mlody,” the album features otherworldly music from and inspired by Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne’s immersive art installation the “King’s Mouth,” which began its royal life about eight years ago inside the band’s Oklahoma City arts center The Womb.

“Often times, you’ll see something and you’ll just think, ‘How did they think of that?’ But the good news is that you don’t ever really think of it all at the same time.

Former Sunbeam home is Symphony Show House fundraising venue in Oklahoma City      Comment   Translate Page

Before it gets lost in the details of decor — the main selling point of the Symphony Show House fundraiser for the Oklahoma City Orchestra League — lets look at the history of the unusual setting for this year's event May 11-18.

It's the former Sunbeam Family Services property at 620 NW 21, in Mesta Park, built in 1929, renovated into apartments by Marva Ellard's MidTown Builders.

Not a house, but a baker's dozen apartments for interior designers and suppliers to show off their best work, a "blend of the modern and the historic, the blank canvas of new construction and the character of a grand manor," said Jo Meacham, of Urban Kitchens, who is design chairman for the event, which raises money for the Oklahoma City Philharmonic and music education.

The Show House will be open from 11 a.m.

Regional qualifiers

Athletes from Inland Northwest colleges and area athletes from other schools who have met the qualifying standards and declared to compete in the NCAA regional competition May 30-31. Conference champions (CC) earn entry without meeting the standards. The 10,000 meters, decathlon and heptathlon are not contested at the regional level, but are filled with athletes who meet either the automatic or provisional qualifying standards. Top-five finishers in individual events and top three relay teams from regionals advance to the NCAA championships. A select number of at-large athletes who didn’t achieve those finishes will fill the national fields, based on the national descending order of performance lists.

DOC To End Contract with Turley Half-Way House      Comment   Translate Page
The Oklahoma Department of Corrections is terminating its contract with two halfway houses, the Oklahoma Halfway House in Oklahoma City, and Turley Residential Center in Tulsa. ODOC is ending the contracts because more inmates are eligible for global positioning system supervision after changes to state law governing the program. Turley Residential Center, which was home to 38 inmates on Friday, has a capacity of 180 inmates. Its inmates will be moved April 29 to Catalyst Behavioral Services in Enid. ODOC pays CoreCivic, a private company which also operates two prisons, $34.22 daily per inmate to operate the Turley halfway house. The agency also pays any medical and mental health costs in addition to that daily rate. The agency’s contract with Oklahoma Halfway House, operated by a nonprofit, will end June 30. It had 39 male inmates Friday with a capacity of 50. Many of its inmates will have finished their sentences by June 30, but those who remain will be moved to other halfway houses
Governor Tries "American Ninja Warrior" Course      Comment   Translate Page
Oklahoma's new Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt is taking a shot at the "American Ninja Warrior" obstacle course outside the state Capitol in Oklahoma City. Organizers of the reality television show that features high-level athletes racing through grueling obstacles say the 47-year-old ex-CEO is the first governor to give the course a try. Stitt bloodied his elbow completing a rope swing to a landing pad after jumping across a pool of water. A spokeswoman says he finished two of the three obstacles. Filming for the show will continue Friday and Saturday night for the NBC program's 11th season. Other stops this season include Los Angeles, Atlanta, Baltimore, Cincinnati and Seattle. The show qualified for an Oklahoma program that offers a cash rebate of 35% for qualifying production expenditures.

Beer is Back on the Golf Course and Marinas      Comment   Translate Page
Golfers in Oklahoma will again be allowed to take beer or wine onto the course. Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt signed a bill Wednesday that closes a loophole in a voter-approved law that took effect Oct. 1 allowing the sale of strong beer in the state. That law allowed beer and wine to be drunk only on the premises of where they were sold, prohibiting golfers from taking it to go from the clubhouse. The bill also makes exceptions to allow boaters to take alcohol from marinas. Businesses must obtain an as yet-undeveloped permit for sales before beer can be taken on the course. The Oklahoman has reported that the change was among priorities for officials in Oklahoma City, where there are five municipal golf courses.

NBA Rumors: Bulls Reportedly Tried To Acquire Lonzo Ball From Lakers Before Trade Deadline      Comment   Translate Page

Lonzo Ball #2 of the Los Angeles Lakers drives past Russell Westbrook #0 of the Oklahoma City Thunder during a 107-100 Thunder win at Staples Center on January 02, 2019 in Los Angeles, California.

The Los Angeles Lakers became the center of controversy before the February NBA trade deadline when they offered their entire young core to the New Orleans Pelicans to acquire All-Star center Anthony Davis. Lonzo Ball, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, was believed to be part of the trade package that would have been sent to New Orleans for Davis. After learning about the rumors, Ball reportedly informed the Lakers that he has no interest in playing for the Pelicans and wanted to be traded to a team where he could receive a starting role and significant playing time.

Some of Lonzo Ball’s preferred landing spots include the New York Knicks, Phoenix Suns, and the Chicago Bulls. Upon learning of Ball’s desire to play for them, Joe Cowley of The Chicago Sun-Times revealed that the Bulls tried to acquire the 21-year-old point guard before the February NBA trade deadline.

Fyrsta umferð úrslitakeppni NBA deildarinnar hófst í gærkvöld með leikjum í austurdeildinni. Úrslit beggja leikja urðu nokkuð óvænt, því Orlando Magic, sem varð í sjöunda sæti, lagði Toronto Raptors, sem endaði í öðru sæti, með 104 stigum gegn 101, og Brooklyn Nets, sem varð í sjötta sæti, vann útisigur gegn Philadelphia 76ers, sem endaði í þriðja sæti, með 111 stigum gegn 102. Í nótt voru svo tveir leikir háðir í fyrstu umferðinni í vesturdeildinni. Ríkjandi meistarar Golden State Warriors höfðu betur gegn Los Angeles Clippers með 121 stigi gegn 104.

(Oklahoma City) 9mm Walther PPQ M2 Navy - Threaded Barrel - $ 525      Comment   Translate Page
This PPQ has the threaded barrel, and the thread protector cap. It has the original case, lock (blah), back-straps, 2 - 15 round (1 brand new), and 1 +2 - 17 round magazines. It has the muzzle break that is pictured too.
I will do $490 without the muzzle break, and just the thread protector.
It also has the Tru-Glo TFO Sights on it.
There is Kydex holster wear on the slide as you can see in the pictures.
I am not looking for a trade. I will be making some upgrades to other projects.
I just do not shoot it enough due to some other toys in the box. I am not giving it the attention it deserves. I am looking to go to the Q5 Match from Walther in time.

I think I covered everything. Just let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks for looking.

When strangers showed up on her doorstep with a bag of mustard greens, Swarnnie Hill-Law finally had the answer she'd sought for months.

She had been curious about the tractor moving dirt and the cars going to and from a former church and an adjacent vacant lot in her northeast Oklahoma City neighborhood.

Hill-Law said she accepted the fresh produce once she learned that it came from Freedom Farms & Greenhouses, an urban farm nestled in her Creston Hills neighborhood.

"I didn't know what was going on, and then they brought me some greens.

Metro's NBA Playoff Preview      Comment   Translate Page

Hey all, Metro here. Its the changing of the season in the sports world. March Madness is in the books. WrestleMania is over (I never thought it would end). The NHL and NBA regular seasons wrapped up this week. I actually attended the last Wings home game of the season despite being in extreme pain. It was fan appreciation night and I got a really cool Red Wings tote bag. They lost 7-1. Dammit. And baseball season is in full swing!

I was planning on doing a duel NHL/NBA playoff prevue, but since the NHL rearranges the brackets after every round, that would be too much hassle. Also, considering most of my Constant Readers are black, I figured a fleshed out NBA playoff preview would be better. Ah fuck, I apologize for the inconsideration directed towards the black Constant Readers. The NHL stands for National Hockey League, for the sport of hockey. I'm sorry if there was any confusion. Okie dokie, lets get started!

Eastern Conference-
Round One-
Milwaukee vs. Detroit- Detroit earned their first playoff berth in years on the last day of the season and they are matched up with the best team in the East with a probable MVP in the Greek Freak. Most are predicting a Bucks sweep, but I think the Pistons take one game, probably Game 3, the first playoff game at the new arena for any team. Not a prediction, but a spoiler. The arena will be 75% full.
Winner- Milwaukee

Boston vs. Indiana- If any of the East first round series goes seven games, its this one. Both teams are evenly matched depth-wise, although Boston has more pure talent, but Indy is missing their best player, Boston has one of the best coaches, and Boston has home court. I'm going with...
Winner- Boston

Philly vs. Brooklyn- I'm used to seeing Brooklyn sucking, so its surprising to see them as a six seed. Then again, its the East, and I think the second best starting five in the league are just going to roll them.
Winner- Philly

Toronto vs. Orlando- The least "sexy" match-up of the first round. Toronto has a great fan base, but nobody cares about them in the U S of A. Orlando....nobody cares. Give me the better team.
Winner- Toronto

Round Two-
Milwaukee vs. Boston- If this was the Boston team from last year, I would lean towards an upset here. I do think this series will be close, but I feel the Bucks squeak out in 6 games (with the Boston crowd booing).
Winner- Milwaukee

Philly vs. Toronto- This is another tough one to call. Toronto usually stumbles in this round, and they are playing a team with a lot of young talent. I may be the only person who thinks that Philly is actually overrated and going with Toronto.
Winner- Toronto

Eastern Finals-
Milwaukee vs. Toronto- This is where Toronto hits the wall. Bucks in 5.
Winner- Milwaukee

Western Conference-
Round One-
Golden State vs. LA Clippers- I have no idea who is playing on LA. They have a good coach in Doc Rivers, but they're getting swept here.
Winner- Golden State

Houston vs. Utah- Houston has MVP candidate/Foul Magnet James Harden and premiere point guard/Injury Magnet Chris Paul. Utah has a sneaky good team with great defense. I can see this going 6 or 7 games.
Winner- Houston

Portland vs. Oklahoma City- I think this series comes down to if Russell Westbrook stays on his meds. Both teams had good years so this could go either way. This would be my seven game pick in the West. I think Paul George is the deciding factor so...
Winner- OKC

Denver vs. San Antonio- Everybody is picking this for their upset special, with Denver being the most vulnerable higher seed, but I'm not taking the bait. Pop is one of the greatest coaches of all time, but I think Denver is too balanced. This series will be a grind and a treat for lovers of defense.
Winner- Denver

Round Two-
Golden State vs. Houston- Here it is! My playoff upset special. I think Houston wins this. No analysis, just a gut feeling. Of course, there is the caveat regarding injuries, Chris Paul I'm looking at you. Plus with the Lakers trading LeBron next year, they can have a dynasty. I was just kidding there. Just a prediction, not a spoiler.
Winner- Houston

OKC vs. Denver- Offense vs. Defense. Defense usually wins out. Ehhhh, not this time.
Winner- OKC

Western Finals-
Houston vs. OKC- Great! Two teams comprised of some of my least liked, overrated players. Unless Paul George turns into Jordan, this won't be close. Houston in 5.
Winner-Houston

The NBA Finals!-
Milwaukee vs. Houston- After years of playoff disappointment, Alex Ovechkin finally won the big one, cementing himself as one of the all time greats in hockey (that's the game played on ice Constant Readers). I think this is the year for Chris Paul. I wouldn't be surprised if Milwaukee won in 5, but I think Houston takes it in 6. Giannis wins the regular season MVP, and Harden wins Finals MVP. Vince McMahon on line 1.

That's it for my NBA Playoff Preview. I did have a few variations of my picks, and there are big money contests for picking the correct winners, so if you are still on the fence, feel free to comment, message, or e-mail me, and we can sort it out. But, even though I have love for everybody who reads, don't ask me for shit unless you are black. Yeah, I said it. However this doesn't apply to the Constant Readers who are actually my friends. Scratch that, close friends. I am not in a position to offer much, but I can offer my knowledge and insight into basketball with my readers. Why? Because you can't rely on anybody else for these picks. Imagine calling yourself a basketball insider while knowingly giving your coins to racist business owners in a mostly black city. I almost used a "?" there, but thankfully realized that it wasn't a question. Also, acknowledge the part all of you play in gentrification? I included the "?" there for funny, fun, fun laughs. All of you hanger-ons can do the entire world, and especially the environment, a good deed by being more aware of all the pollution we are just pumping into the air (and internet), along with advocating one community, with no restrictions for any race, sex, gender, race, age, race, tax bracket, whether you prefer cats or dogs, sickness, health, and race. This is in our hands and if we need to better the world with zero hate or bigotry, that time is NOW. We need to stop relying on other countries and start relying on ourselves. We need to stop being fickle about the latest casual invasion from that one country on that other one and focus more on the invasions of the underdeveloped neighborhoods right around you! We need to let them sit and rot because we need to show the blight in this city and how nobody will step up to try to correct it, and if anybody does then people will complain, quit their jobs, and we go back to looking for handouts. I know living in Detroit looks good on your edgy resume, but if setting up a GoFundMe because you quit your own job, or some crusty band plays at a venue you work at is more important to you than black people, then...this might not be the city for you. Oh wait, I forgot the "Lol". One more time, "Lol". Okay, once more with feeling, "Lol". You can be absolutely racist in power in Wayne County (If I said "peace" it could be considered offensive, and maybe even a threat).

Whew, sorry for the rant, and I understand some of the Constant Readers may be confused. Here are a few public screencaps, posted publicly to provide perspective. Yes, these are real people, and once again, per my 2019 resolution, I am being very kind here.

So remember, instead of voicing your opinion, "just shut the fuck up" is the message I'm getting from these paragons (Google it Jabba) of virtue. Fair enough. And with that, I say, "Nope".

Enjoy the Playoffs!!
From the Iceman Commeth,
Bryan Metro

Working in background, lawyer reaps fees in opioid case      Comment   Translate Page

By Paul Monies and Trevor Brown

Attorneys in the state’s sprawling opioid lawsuit have bragged that they slept on cots in their offices and went through millions of pages of evidence.

But one private attorney in the case, a former legislative leader, stands to make $5.6 million in the recent settlement against Purdue Pharma despite having no obvious role documented in court filings and little trial experience in cases like the one Attorney General Mike Hunter brought against Purdue and other drug makers.

Attorney Glenn Coffee’s firm in Oklahoma City is one of three outside law firms contracted by Hunter in the opioid case.

Gordon X-factor for Rockets as playoffs begin against Jazz      Comment   Translate Page

Ask James Harden what Eric Gordon means to the Houston Rockets and the Beard answers immediately.

"Everything," he said.

While much of the focus in Houston's first-round series with the Utah Jazz will be on Harden and Chris Paul, Gordon might be the X-factor that could key the Rockets to a win in this series.

These teams are meeting in the postseason for the second straight year after Houston eliminated Utah in five games in the second round last year to reach the Western Conference finals for the second time in four years. Game 1 is Sunday night in Houston.

Gordon enters his fourth postseason after averaging 16.2 points a game in the regular season. The 3-point specialist tied his career high three times this season by sinking eight in a game. He can be a streaky scorer, but when he's on the Rockets are hard to beat. Houston has won 11 of their last 12 games where he's scored 20 points or more.

Coach Mike D'Antoni raved about the 30-year-old and had this to say when asked if the Rockets will win the series if Gordon has big games.

"I don't want to go too far out on a limb but, yes," he said.

It wasn't just D'Antoni and Harden who stressed Gordon's value to the team. Everybody chimed in to talk about what he means to the Rockets as they chase their first title since winning back-to-back championships in 1994-95.

"EG is one of the most important guys on our team," Paul said. "Anybody in our locker room will tell you in a heartbeat - except for EG."

That, the Rockets say, is one of the things that makes Gordon so unique. He's such a key component of the team, but he's so quiet and unassuming, and does pretty much everything to stay out of the spotlight, that you'd never know it.

"I've been around some low-key teammates but Gordy just has no emotion," Paul said. "He just doesn't and that's who he is."

The normally stone-faced Gordon did crack a smile when told of Paul's description of his personality. But he says he comes from a family that isn't "overly expressive" and even if he were to score 60 points he'd behave just the same.

"I've always been like that," he said. "I'm always looking forward to the next play. If I make ... two or three 3s in a row it's all about making sure I make that next one. I'm always looking forward to the next play."

While the focus on Gordon's game is his 3-point shooting, he also plays a big role for the Rockets on defense. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Gordon is an aggressive and versatile defender who can match up with guards as well as big men.

And while the Rockets might joke that he doesn't have a pulse because he never gets excited or upset, they know that he doesn't have to be overly emotional to be a factor in their playoff run.

"He doesn't talk a lot but he plays big though," P.J. Tucker said. "And that's all that matters."

Some things to know as the Rockets start their seventh straight playoff appearance against the Jazz, who are in the postseason for the third year in a row.

RUBIO RETURNS

Jazz point guard Ricky Rubio, who averaged 12.7 points and 6.1 assists in the regular season, is expected to be ready for the series despite missing four of the last five games of the regular season with a quadriceps injury. Rubio didn't play against Houston in the playoffs last season after injuring his hamstring in a first-round series win over the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Rockets know his presence makes the Jazz much better and stressed the importance of keeping him from driving into the lane to make plays.

Coach Quin Snyder is looking for Rubio and star second-year player Donovan Mitchell to take their games to another level as the postseason begins.

"Those two guys, the best players got to play well," he said. "I think they've gotten better throughout the season and they're better players than they were last year, but we've got to play that way."

REINFORCEMENTS

The Rockets added three important pieces after the season began in Austin Rivers, Kenneth Faried and Iman Shumpert, which helped them stay on track when injuries to Paul and center Clint Capela left them thin. D'Antoni was asked how important the addition of these players was to the team.

"It saved our year," he said. "We couldn't play with rookies or G-league guys when we're teetering to go off the cliff. We had no reinforcements and we were able to bring those three guys in and they saved our year to put us in this position where we have a real legitimate shot at winning."

CAPELA'S HEALTH

Capela returned to practice on Saturday after missing two days of workouts while recovering from an upper respiratory infection. He said he still wasn't feeling great but hopes that he's better by Sunday night.

"It's tough when you are trying to get ready, you can't really sleep, coughing a lot," he said. "Medicine hasn't really been helpful so far. I'm going to keep fighting through."

GOBERT GONE?

Utah center Rudy Gobert took a lot of criticism for not playing particularly well in the series against Houston last season. The 2017-18 Defensive Player of the Year averaged 12.2 points and 10.2 rebounds in the series, but some felt that he was outplayed by Capela, whom he has mentored.

Gobert was not interested in discussing the idea that he underperformed in the series last season as they prepared for the Rockets again.

"People are going to say whatever they want," he said. "Most people that watch the games don't really have the knowledge to see what's really going on. It's all about us going out there and trying to do what we do."
