Comment on Woman, 51, found dead on Berkeley sidewalk by Leah Gonzales       Comment   Translate Page
No foul play? Lisa somehow got all the from gilman st, where she could barely cross the tracks in her wheelchair; up to and past Alta Bates. She went to go see her boyfriend, who has also died since then. She was seen with an unknown person, while enroute to alta bates. Unknown to the homeless that saw her that last day. The suspicious part was that she was well past alta bates when found. She grew up her so I seriously doubt she lost her bearings. The possible reasons for it being deemed not foul play are either she was homeless so everyone will accept that answer or the killer is known and saying it wasnt foul play will help to cover that up. If she died of natural causes, I still want to know why she was headed towards oakland in the middle of the night. God bless Lisa and God bless Richard. May the rest in peace together as the did not get to do so in life. They were two of many who die without it being justified.

The name isn’t as important as the title for Ron Stone Jr. in quest to be starting “Rush” LB at Washington State      Comment   Translate Page

PULLMAN – Everything considered, it’s a pretty trivial matter. But since Washington State’s redshirt freshman “Rush” linebacker could see some real playing time in the near future, we might as well settle the debate now, if only to make it easier on the broadcasters who’ll be calling his name and the journalists who’ll be printing it.

R.J. Stone or Ron Stone Jr.?

It’s a fair question for the second-year Cougar because the evidence is conflicting: WSU lists “Ron Stone Jr.” on its official roster, but the player’s Twitter handle, “@Rj__Stone” indicates his fanbase – a group that could grow substantially this season – should call him the opposite.

So, the official verdict?

“I mean either/or works,” Stone Jr. said when asked to clear the confusion. “I’ve gone by R.J. my whole life, but kind of like my senior year and once I first got to college is when I’ve taken that step as Ron.”

That prompts the next most obvious question: How did R.J. become Ron?

Once football began to take a more prominent role in Stone’s life, he decided to make the switch, reverting to the birth name he adopted from his father – an ode to his first coach and mentor in the sport.

“I was named after my dad and that’s kind of one of the main reasons I started playing football,” Stone said. “Kind of a tribute to him a little bit and just showing I can do it, too.”

Ron Stone Sr. was a 13-year NFL veteran who had stops in Dallas, New York (Giants), Oakland and San Francisco. An offensive lineman who battled a spate of injuries throughout his career, Stone Sr. made three Pro Bowl appearances, two All-Pro teams and won a pair of Super Bowls – XXVII and XXX – with the Cowboys in the mid-1990s.

The memories are faint, but Stone Jr. still recalls sitting in club-level seats at the Oakland Coliseum and watching the tail end of his father’s pro career. Stone Sr. retired in 2006 after two seasons with the Raiders and kept his family close by in the Bay Area.

“Growing up, I used to go to a couple of his games when he was at the Raiders,” Stone Jr. said. “And a couple of the other teams, I don’t remember as well.”

It was a stop-and-go lifestyle for the Stones hopping from one city to the next, but the time Ron Jr. spent around the game was invaluable. When Ron Sr’s NFL career died down, he coached his son at the Pop Warner level all the way through to high school. Ron Sr. is still the offensive line coach at Valley Christian, where Ron Jr. was an All-Metro first-team selection as a senior and the West Catholic League’s Most Valuable Defensive Lineman.

“It’s kind of developed me as a football player knowing I get my dad as a coach,” said Stone Jr., whose sisters, aptly named Ronna and Ronika, are student-athletes at Oregon. “He went all the way to that top level, so there’s no better coaching you can get from that.”

He may be indifferent to what you call him, but Stone Jr. eventually wants to be known as WSU’s starting “Rush” linebacker. He’s in the thick of a competition with two returning players, Willie Taylor III and Dominick Silvels, who were essentially 1A and 1B at that position last year. So winning a job is no simple task.

Here’s what Stone Jr. thinks it’ll take: “Just effort in the individual drills and one-on-ones. Just winning all your drills. All the things you can do best, doing the best you can do. Just kind of set yourself apart individually.”

Even with vastly more experience than their younger position mate, Silvels and Taylor III know Stone Jr. is making a push – and a strong one – this spring. He had a touch sack in Saturday’s scrimmage and has worked occasionally with the No. 1 defense during Thursday’s 10th spring practice in Pullman.

“He’s competing, it’s all three of us competing right now,” Taylor III said. “We can all play. He’s good, needs to learn more. For me playing last year, I’ve been able to help him out a little bit. It’s been pretty good.”

It’s simple: Stone Jr. wants to make a name for himself at WSU. As long as “Stone Jr.” is the last name on the depth chart, the first name preceding it is unimportant.

“Everyone wants to play. Everyone wants to win, so it’s going to give us all that extra drive because there’s so few of us,” he said. “Two, three, we can all play, but that starting spot’s what everyone’s going for, so it’s really competitive and we’re all looking forward to it.”

OpenStreetMap US Board Election Results      Comment   Translate Page

[repost from the OpenStreetMapUS blog]

The OpenStreetMap US board elections for 2019 have completed! As an election observer, I was tasked with making sure the elections were impartial and not unduly influenced, and that the vote counting was done properly.

This was an unusual election in that we had two separate questions:

The first question was to fill the open seat vacated by Maggie Cawley, who resigned to take on the role of Executive Director. The second question was a simple confirmatory vote of approval for the remaining four board members. Given that there was no election held for the board back in March (because only five candidates were nominated for five open seats), the board decided it was appropriate to hold a confirmatory vote since we were already holding an election anyway for the open seat.

The results of the election are as follows:

The existing board members were confirmed overwhelmingly, with 98 voting “yes” and 6 voting “no”. In the final round of ranked choice voting Minh Nguyễn was elected to the open seat. Congratulations Minh!

Analysis

If you don’t care about the nerdy mechanics of this Ranked Choice Voting election, you can stop reading now. But if you’re interested in a deeper analysis of the results, read on:

For OpenStreetMap US elections, we use Ranked Choice Voting (RCV), which means that each voter has the opportunity to rank all the candidates in order of preference. When RCV is used to elect multiple seats at the same time, it’s also known as Single Transferable Vote (STV), and when it’s used to elect a single seat (as was the case in this election), it’s sometimes called Instant Runoff Voting (IRV).

Under Instant Runoff Voting, if no candidate has a majority of the votes at first, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated, and the votes for that candidate are then transferred to the second choices on those ballots. After the transfer, if there is still no candidate with a majority, then the cycle repeats: the remaining candidate with the fewest votes gets eliminated, and their votes are transferred to the highest-ranked candidate on those ballots that is still in the running. This process continues until a candidate reaches a majority of votes, or until there is only one candidate left standing.

Under our system of Ranked Choice Voting, voters are not required to rank all the candidates, so it’s possible that their ballots will become “exhausted” if there are no more candidates still in the running that have been ranked by that voter.

Here is the graphical output from the OpaVote vote tallying software, which shows the results at each round of counting.

This IRV election had some interesting characteristics. First of all, there was no majority winner until the final round, showing the necessity of using Ranked Choice Voting. Had we used a single-round plurality voting system (often called First Past the Post), the leading candidate could have won a seat on the board with only 29% of the votes. In the end, the final tally was very close, with Minh Nguyễn finishing with 51.7% of the vote compared to Daniela Waltersdorfer’s 48.3%.

Another interesting feature of this election was that Nguyễn was 2nd place in the early rounds of voting, only to come from behind to win in the final round. This is exactly the kind of outcome that IRV is designed to make possible, but in most cases where IRV is used in practice, generally the leader in the first round of voting ends up winning in the final round. It is only when there are two (or three) evenly matched candidates that IRV vote transfers end up making a difference.

In the final round, we can see that IRV guarantees a majority winner, with Nguyễn having 51.7% to Waltersdorfer’s 48.3%. But this was only a majority of votes that were still in play at the final round: almost 15% of the ballots were “exhausted” in the final round, meaning that those voters did not rank either Nguyễn or Waltersdorfer on their ballots. If we include those exhausted ballots in the totals, then Nguyễn got 44% of the vote compared to Waltersdorfer’s 41%. But we can still say that Nguyễn won a majority of the voters who still had a preference in the final round.

One last interesting feature of this election is that Nguyễn and Martijn van Exel were tied for 2nd place in the second to last round. Under the IRV rules we used for this election, in order to decide which candidate to eliminate when there is a tie, we look back into the previous rounds to see which candidate was ahead. Since Nguyễn was ahead of van Exel in every previous round, we use that information to decide that van Exel should be eliminated.

Alternative scenarios

But some variations on IRV rules (for example, the rules used by the cities of San Francisco and Oakland) specify that tied candidates should be eliminated randomly. For large civic elections with hundreds of thousands of votes, that’s probably fine because exact ties are extremely rare. But in our OSM elections it’s better to use our more deterministic way of breaking ties, since they are likely to happen more often.

But what if we had used these random-tie-breaking rules and if Nguyễn had lost the coin flip, then what would the outcome have been if it was Waltersdorfer and van Exel in the final round?

If we look at the raw votes file, we can examine the ballots and see what would have happened in this alternate scenario. See here to learn how to understand the .blt file format used by OpaVote.

To figure out what the tally would be in the final round between two candidates, we can ignore the rankings for all the other candidates, and merely look at the relative ordering of the two finalists on each ballot.

So, if Nguyễn had been eliminated instead of van Exel, we find that there are 43 ballots that ranked Waltersdorfer ahead of van Exel, and 49 that ranked van Exel ahead (with 12 exhausted ballots). So had van Exel not been eliminated in the tiebreaker in the second-to-last round, he would have gone on to win overall.

Again, this shows that in an election between three evenly-matched candidates, small differences in the rankings can produce surprisingly different outcomes.

Condorcet winner

IRV is not the only alternative voting method out there, and one of the other possible voting techniques is the Condorcet Method. From the voter’s point of view, Condorcet is similar: on your ballot you rank candidates in order of preference. But unlike IRV where we progressively eliminate candidates in a series of runoffs, under Condorcet we would look at each possible head-to-head matchup of the candidates, to find out which candidate would beat every other candidate.

If you spend enough time learning about alternative election methods, you’ll eventually hear one of the few criticisms of IRV, which is that it can sometimes fail to elect the candidate who is the “Condorcet winner”.

In our election, Nguyễn narrowly defeated Waltersdorfer in the final round, but had we used different tie-breaking rules, then van Exel would have been the one to narrowly defeat Waltersdorfer. So this left me wondering: is it possible that van Exel was the Condorcet winner, but our IRV election failed to elect him?

The way to find that out is to see who would have won in a hypothetical head-to-head matchup between Nguyễn and van Exel. Note that there are no IRV rules that would have resulted in this matchup in the final round; Waltersdorfer was ahead in every round of counting until the end, so there is no way she would have been eliminated earlier, resulting in this matchup.

If we look at the raw ballots again, we find that there are 57 ballots where Nguyễn was ranked ahead of van Exel, and 38 where van Exel was ahead of Nguyễn (with 9 ballots that did not rank either one of them). So Nguyễn would win the head-to-head matchup, making him the clear Condorcet winner, as well as the IRV winner.

Final thoughts

Again, I’d like to congratulate Minh for winning election to the OpenStreetMap US board, and I’d also like to congratulate all the other candidates who ran. One of the great things about Ranked Choice Voting is that we don’t have to worry about the “spoiler effect”, whereby one candidate choosing to run could end up splitting the vote and causing another like-minded candidate to lose. Under the RCV system, there’s no harm in having many candidates running; if anything, more candidates brings more attention to our elections and builds a healthier democracy within OSM. So for those candidates who didn’t win this time, don’t be discouraged! We hope you’ll stand again for election next year!

OAKLAND Though there were a few perilous moments Saturday, most of which were salvaged by Stephen Curry, never did the Clippers offer a legitimate threat to the Warriors.

The defending champs rolled to a 121-104 win over Los Angeles, taking a 1-0 lead in their best-of-seven first-round playoff series.

Behind Currys sharpshooting and spells of excellent defense, the Warriors took a double-digit lead midway through the third quarter and maintained it until the final horn.

Trump and Oakland mayor trade Twitter barbs over immigration policies      Comment   Translate Page
President Trump and a California mayor traded barbs over Twitter on Saturday, prompted by the president's repeated threats to release detained immigrants into “sanctuary cities.”

Copyright 2019 NPR. To see more, visit SCOTT SIMON, HOST: Could detained migrants be moved into places that call themselves sanctuary cities? President Trump says he's strongly considering the idea, placing apprehended migrants in cities that have declared themselves sanctuaries. That is cities that limit their cooperation with federal immigration officials. President Trump said in a tweet, the radical left always seems to have an open borders, open arms policy, so this should make them very happy. Libby Schaaf is the mayor of Oakland, Calif., a sanctuary city. Mayor Schaaf, thanks so much for being with us. LIBBY SCHAAF: Oh, thanks for having me. SIMON: Do you welcome this chance for Oakland to welcome migrants? SCHAAF: Listen. Oakland is a city that prides itself on diversity and inclusion. We are proud of the immigrant community that we have right now. And it's our job to not build walls but build bridges and welcome all people and celebrate the richness that diverse cultures bring

Hemp is a fiber that is soft, durable, hypoallergenic, absorbent and resistant to mold, which can last as long or longer than most textiles. One acre of plants can produce more than ten tons of dry product each year, making it one of the fastest growing and renewable crops in the world. It can grow at this rate without pesticides and herbicides, which pollute the land and waterways. When it's finally time to retire your hemp collar, the hemp is biodegradable.

At Collars With Color, we're committed to the environment. Whenever possible, we use environmentally friendly products and processes to make our products. We partner with Carbonfund.org to offset everything we produce, giving your item a net impact to the environment of zero. Defense Rules - You're counting out Ronald Jones, I'm not doing so... YET. I'd give him camp and the preseason and see how he looks, but again, review every single run he had last year and tell me why he's at fault on 90% of them. I think there was maybe 2 plays all season that I can remember where he, from what I could see on tape, seemed to not read the play right and missed his hole. The rest of the time he's almost always being hit in the backfield. To be clear, again, I hated the pick last year, and if you were going to choose someone Ronald wasn't my choice, but it's not like the Bucs were the only people that had him as a 2nd rounder, so he clearly has talent. As for if Barber goes down, sure, that's a big deal - but just like with the Rams last year, you can find people that can come in off the street and perform. One guy in particular I'd have complete faith in, who has done it before, that would be Doug Martin, who looked good last year in Oakland when their offense stunk - but he at least got acceptable blocking. Also you can always trade like a 6th or 7th rounder to someone for a quality back if you get to the preseason and don't like what you have. My point is you can't spend a high pick, two years in a row, on a RB when that's not anywhere near the top of your need chart. I hated the idea last year, I hate it even more this year. Wait until after camp and get into the preseason and if Ronnie still doesn't seem to be getting it, then make a move.

Demosaurus Hypocriticus - (Bozo Sapien)

I'm shocked, shocked I tell you, that democrats and the ivory tower media are making such a fuss about DJT's proposal to send illegal immigrants to sanctuary cities. This the liberals and media should be applauding! Sanctuary cities actively invite illegals to come there for safety, and all the president proposes is sending those cities more of what they said they were willing to take, and he's even throwing in free shipping. After all, Sanctuary city leaders, and apparently indirectly city voters, have been willing to provide the millions of dollars in tax resources to welcome them the past two years.

Sanctuary cities are indeed the most humane option for the million or so illegals that arrive each year, and their mayors should specifically request receiving illegals for humanitarian reasons and even compete for illegals. The inhuman alternative is releasing illegals to areas unprepared to suddenly handle tens to hundreds of thousands of needy people, which would be inhumane because they would get far less care, less housing, less food, and less medical care than the sanctuary cities. If one illegal is good for a sanctuary city................

What Trump has brilliantly done is applied the fourth of Saul Alinsky’s “Rules for Radicals: “Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules.”

The holier-than-thou media and democrat politicans have been lecturing the public for years how illegals are the ideal citizen and no walls or other efforts should be made to stop or limit their crossing into the United States. Yet when the President offers to send them more illegals, they object. These Mayors and governors are currently violating federal law by harboring illegal immigrants and refusing, at the cost of the lives and property of their legal citizens, to report their presence to the federal government.

So why do they object now??  Well, let's suppose the mayor of Oakland or San Francisco opened their doors and welcomed 100,000 illegals a year. Their progressive citizens might initially rejoice and embrace their new residents. But reality would sink in before very long, with massive hikes in taxes, crime, disease and homelessness and all, things that are already apparent in some places.  Residents would eventually revolt. Or maybe the liberals love illegals but just don’t want “them” in THEIR neighborhood (lookin' at you Malibu Babs) which makes them the greatest hypocrites of all time and deserve all possible ridicule and scorn they get from law abiding American people.

America 1976.  Colorful. Complex. Combustible.

A year of Bicentennial celebrations and presidential primaries, of Olympic glory and busing riots, of “killer bees” hysteria and Pong fever.  For both the nation and the national pastime, the year was revolutionary.

It was the craziest season of baseball’s most colorful decade.  A year which witnessed the “Big Red Machine,” the rise of the “Bronx Zoo”-era New York Yankees, the dismantling of the Oakland A’s dynasty, the onset of full-scale free agency, the outrageous antics of team owners Bill Veeck, Ted Turner, George Steinbrenner, and Charlie Finley -- all set against the star-spangled backdrop of America’s Bicentennial.

President Trump and a California mayor traded barbs over Twitter on Saturday, prompted by the president's repeated threats to release detained immigrants into “sanctuary cities.” The exchange between Trump and Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf also appeared triggered, at least in part, by recent New York Times articles about the president's immigration policies. "So interesting to see the Mayor of Oakland and other Sanctuary Cities NOT WANT our currently 'detained immigrants' after release due to the ridiculous court ordered 20 day rule," Trump tweeted. Schaaf fired back, saying: “It’s time to stop fanning hate and division @realDonaldTrump - I’ve been consistent...

Oakland's liberal mayor attacks Trump over immigration policies. Trump swings back with defiant challenge.      Comment   Translate Page

President Donald Trump and Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf (D) traded barbs on social media Saturday over the president's controversial immigration policies.

What's the background?

Last week, the Washington Post revealed top White House aides once considered releasing detained migrants in "sanctuary cities," which are almost exclusively Democratic-led progressive cities. Trump later confirmed he is considering enacting the policy.

In fact, White House deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley told Fox News' Jeanine Pirro Saturday that the administration is actively working with Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials to begin sending illegal immigrants to sanctuary cities.

"They have said they wanted all of these illegal aliens into their communities," Gidley said. "We're working with DHS, we're working with ICE, to try and make sure that happens because after all, it's what they want. They should not say 'This is retribution politically,' they should say, 'This is an olive branch.'"

What happened between Trump and Schaaf?

After the Washington Post revealed the proposed policy, Schaaf, in an interview with KTVU-TV, called the policy idea an "outrageous abuse of power," characterized it as un-American, and said the Trump administration essentially proposed using human beings as "instruments of political payback."

In a separate interview with CNN, Schaaf similarly denounced the proposed policy, but added that she is "proud to be the mayor of a sanctuary city."

Trump hit back at Schaaf on Saturday, questioning why non-sanctuary cities should be forced to carry the burden of caring for illegal immigrants when sanctuary cities already welcome them.

Schaaf swung back, accusing the president of "fanning hate and division."

About 30 minutes later, Trump responded by declaring the legal right to release illegal immigrants in sanctuary cities while demanding, perhaps tongue-in-cheek, that California, a liberal safe haven, accept them.

Schaaf did not respond to Trump's last tweet.

4/14 Through the 1970’s: Tobin Joins; Bunning Stunning; WGN Baptism; Shutouts; HBD George, Bill & Kyle      Comment   Translate Page

  • 1880 - P George Merritt was born in Paterson, NJ. He spent from 1901-03 with the Pirates as a pitcher and part-time outfielder, slashing 3-0/4.50 from the hill and hitting .213 as a bench stick. That was the extent of his MLB days. During his 1903 campaign, he left Pittsburgh and joined the hometown Jersey City Skeeters, playing with them until 1910 before finally hanging up the glove in 1915.
  • 1884 - RHP Wild Bill Luhrsen was born in Buckley, Illinois. Wild Bill’s MLB career consisted of five games (three starts) for the 1913 Pirates when the 29-year-old rookie went 3-1/2.48, with his only loss to Christy Mathewson. The Pirates bought his rights from Albany of the Sally League during the season after a rash of injuries chewed up the staff. He was later sent to Columbus after the pitching recovered. After his baseball days ended, Luhrsen worked as a machinist and a lumber buyer in Little Rock.
Emil Yde 1925 (photo Bain/Library of Congress)
  • 1925 - Chicago’s WGN Radio broadcast its first ever regular season Cubs’ baseball game (Quin Ryan announced the contest from the grandstand roof) as Chicago’s Grover Alexander defeated the Pirates and Emil Yde on Opening Day, 8-2. Six of the runs against Yde were unearned thanks to three Bucco boots. Old Pete not only was the winning pitcher, but helped himself with a single, double, and home run.
  • 1937 - The Bucs bought minor league pitcher Jim “Abba Dabba” Tobin from the Yankees, who had him stashed on the PCL Oakland Oaks roster. Tobin tossed three seasons for Pittsburgh, going 29-24 with a 3.71 ERA before being sent to Boston. He was a mainstay of their staff during the war years and pitched in MLB through 1945; he tossed a no-hitter for Beantown in 1944. He was also a good stick; he hit .230 during his career/.275 during his Pittsburgh stay and was often used as a pinch hitter. Abba Dabba is the only modern-era pitcher to hit three homers in one game, as he did for the Braves in 1942 (Guy Hecker, who would later manage the Alleghenys, was the only other pitcher to match, back in 1886). Tobin called it a day as a pro player after the 1950 campaign. As for his nickname, the Detroit Athletic Company explained “Tobin liked to do imitations of a vaudeville magician. As part of the act, Tobin would pause in the middle of a magic trick and declare, ‘Abba Dabba, are you ready?’”
  • 1960 - The Pirates showed that they would be a NL force to reckon with during their home opener, pounding the Reds 13-0 in front of 34,064 fans. Vern Law pitched a complete game shutout while Roberto Clemente and Billy Maz combined to bring home nine runs. One of the Great One’s RBI was a 445’ sac fly that Vada Pinson corralled just short of the batting cage parked in center field.
Al McBean 1964 Topps
  • 1963 - Al McBean tossed Pittsburgh to a 1-0 victory over the Reds at Cincinnati’s Crosley Field on Easter for their fourth straight victory. It wasn’t a thing of beauty. The Bucs pushed their only run across in the fourth thanks to a walk and pair of infield singles off Joey Jay, with only one other runner reaching third. Cincy had 10 hits to go with a walk and error, but stranded 12 runners, twice leaving the bases loaded and three times leaving runners at second and third. But Alvin was tough enough and mowed down the final seven batters to ice the win.
  • 1968 - Jim Bunning earned his first win with Pittsburgh‚ 3-0, at Los Angeles. It was his 40th career shutout and included his 1‚000th NL strikeout‚ making him the first pitcher since Cy Young with 1‚000 punchouts in each league. His bacon was saved when Roberto Clemente brought back a potential two-run homer to right by Ron Fairly, leaping above the wall to snag the ball.
  • 1976 - RHP Kyle Farnsworth was born in Wichita, Kansas. Kyle spent 16 years and tossed 893 games in the MLB; a few weeks and nine outings were on the Pirates dime in 2013. The veteran was picked up off waivers from Tampa Bay and the 38-year-old did his job, giving up one run in 8-1/3 IP during their playoff run. Kyle’s last year in the show was 2014; he tossed in Mexico for a couple of years afterward while multitasking by playing semi-pro football in Florida.

This article drips with the viewpoint of someone whose paycheck requires taxpayer money to keep flowing, with no results required. ---- Willie Brown, former SF mayor, San Francisco Chronicle - July 28, 2013 "News that the Transbay Terminal is something like $300 million over budget should not come as a shock to anyone. We always knew the initial estimate was way under the real cost. Just like we never had a real cost for the [San Francisco] Central Subway or the [San Francisco-Oakland] Bay Bridge or any other massive construction project. So get off it. In the world of civic projects, the first budget is really just a down payment. If people knew the real cost from the start, nothing would ever be approved. The idea is to get going. Start digging a hole and make it so big, there's no alternative to coming up with the money to fill it in."

Cory Booker's half-full kickoff rally could be miserable news for the future of his campaign      Comment   Translate Page

Cory Booker

  • Sen. Cory Booker's 2020 kickoff rally on Saturday had fairly low turnout, especially compared to some of his Democratic competitors.
  • Newark police were reportedly preparing for around 10,000 people, but just over 4,100 showed.
  • Booker's campaign has struggled to find momentum so far, and he's way behind in both the polls and fundraising.
  • Visit BusinessInsider.com for more stories.

NEWARK, NJ — The weather was perfect for Democratic Sen. Cory Booker’s 2020 kickoff rally in Newark, New Jersey, on Saturday, but the sunshine was apparently not enough of a draw for locals to come out and support their former mayor.

Newark police were reportedly planning for up to 10,000 people to show up at the rally. The venue, Military Park in the city's historic downtown, was full of open space.

Booker's campaign told INSIDER that according to Gary Bootes, head of security for the event, there were over 4,100 people in attendance.

Comparatively, Sen. Bernie Sanders' 2020 kickoff rally in Brooklyn, New York, which took place on a snowy, cold day in early March, had a crowd of roughly 13,000.

Sen. Kamala Harris's 2020 kickoff rally in Oakland, California, in late January had approximately 20,000 people in attendance.

Though the crowd in Newark was relatively small, it was quite diverse. The city's population is roughly 50% black, and the crowd at the rally was full of people of all races and ages.

Those in attendance did their best to find shade where they could on one of the warmest days in the region in 2019 so far. At least one person fainted but got help quickly from medical professionals on the scene.

Before Booker took the stage, his mother, Carolyn, spoke and boasted of her son's accomplishments.

"I have watched Cory fight for this community. I have watched Cory fight for this state," she said. "He's a servant leader…Cory will be the type of president who doesn't just lead people, but will listen to the people."

Cory Booker 2020

Booker strutted onto the stage around 1:30 pm ET to Bill Withers' "Lovely Day," thanked his mother, and soon thereafter declared, "I learned right here on these streets that you can’t make progress by dividing people."

"I will be a president for all people in America," Booker went on to say in English, and also in Spanish, in what was perhaps a veiled jab at President Donald Trump and his anti-immigrant rhetoric.

Later, Booker said, "Unlike this president, I won't ignore, or give license to white supremacy."

The New Jersey senator accused Trump of squandering "America's moral authority" and coddling dictators.

"We will no longer wait for America to stand up for justice around the world," he said.

As he wrapped up his speech, Booker urged the crowd to recognize the urgency of the times we live in.

"America we know our history — it is perpetual testimony to impatient, demanding, unrelenting people who in every generation stand up for justice. Generations of Americans have shown us what was possible when they refused to wait. Now it's our turn. And we have work to do. America — we can’t wait. — we will not wait... Together, America, we will rise," Booker said, his voice rising as he delivered the final lines of his address.

The crowd cheered and Booker walked off to "No Problem" by Chance the Rapper. After, he could be seen taking selfies and chatting with people in attendance, though most of the crowd quickly dissipated.

Despite Booker's strong rhetoric, his campaign appears to be struggling to find itself. The New Jersey senator is way behind in the polls — the latest Morning Consult poll puts him in seventh place.

He's also getting crushed in fundraising. He raised $5 million in February and March, his campaign recently announced — far below other 2020 candidates like Sen. Sanders and Sen. Harris, who respectively raised about $18.2 million and $12 million in the same general period.

Despite starting off with a far stronger national profile, Booker is even getting outpaced in polling and fundraising by Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Indiana.

It's still early in the 2020 race, and Booker's campaign could get a boost if he performs well in upcoming debates in Miami and Detroit. But, so far, his run for the White House has received a lukewarm response from Democratic voters.

Californian city mayor urges Trump to stop "fanning hate" over immigrants

DF-Xinhua Report

The mayor of the U.S. city of Oakland on Saturday urged President Donald Trump to stop "fanning hate" over his disputed immigration policy.     "It's time to stop fanning hate and division @realDonaldTrump - I've been consistent and clear: #Oakland welcomes all, no matter where you came from or how you got here," mayor Libby Schaaf said on Twitter.     Schaaf was responding to a tweet by Trump Saturday afternoon when the U.S. president seemed to mock Schaaf's earlier statement accusing Trump of planning to send undocumented immigrants to sanctuary cities.     "...So interesting to see the Mayor of Oakland and other Sanctuary Cities NOT WANT our currently 'detained immigrants' after release due to the ridiculous court-ordered 20-day rule. If they don't want to serve our Nation by taking care of them, why should other cities & towns?" Trump tweeted late Saturday.     Sanctuary cities in the United States are known as local jurisdictions that refrain from cooperating with federal authorities and detain undocumented immigrants for possible deportation. Oakland is one along with other Bay Area cities such as San Francisco and San Jose.     Trump's tweet came after Schaaf said in an earlier TV interview that it's not right to divert the resources of local governments to address the issue of undocumented immigrants.     "I am proud to be the mayor of a sanctuary city ... We embrace the diversity in Oakland, and we do not think it's appropriate for us to use local resources to do the government's failed immigration work," she told CNN Friday.     Trump threatened on Friday to release detained undocumented immigrants into sanctuary cities while blaming the country's immigration laws on Democrats.     "Due to the fact that Democrats are unwilling to change our very dangerous immigration laws, we are indeed, as reported, giving strong considerations to placing Illegal Immigrants in Sanctuary Cities only," Trump wrote in a tweet.     Trump's controversial tweets over immigrants have drawn backfire from some sanctuary cities in the Bay Area.     San Francisco Mayor London Breed called Trump's threat "another in a long line of scare tactics and half-baked ideas that are just about chasing headlines and distracting people from real issues."     San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo said his city welcomes any families "who have endured such incredible hardships and have endeavored to make a better life for themselves and their families and want to be a part of our great country."     Schaaf said Trump's idea was "an outrageous abuse of power and public resources."

White House Looking at Sending Migrants to Sanctuary Cities      Comment   Translate Page
The White House on Sunday, echoing President Donald Trump, said sending undocumented migrants to sanctuary U.S. cities that have protected them from deportation remains a possibility even though government agencies have said it would be impractical and there is no money allocated to do it. "We certainly are looking at all options as long as [opposition] Democrats refuse to acknowledge the crisis at the border," White House press secretary Sarah Sanders told the "Fox News Sunday" show. Trump said late Saturday on Twitter, "Democrats must change the Immigration Laws FAST. If not, Sanctuary Cities must immediately ACT to take care of the Illegal Immigrants - and this includes Gang Members, Drug Dealers, Human Traffickers, and Criminals of all shapes, sizes and kinds. CHANGE THE LAWS NOW!" Hundreds of U.S. cities, along with California, the country's most populous state, have declared themselves as havens for migrants who have illegally crossed the southern U.S. border with Mexico, refusing the help U.S. immigration officials to track down the immigrants so they can be deported. U.S. border authorities apprehended more than 100,000 undocumented migrants, mostly from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, at the border in March, nearly twice that in the same month in 2018. "The USA has the absolute legal right to have apprehended illegal immigrants transferred to Sanctuary Cities," Trump said. "We hereby demand that they be taken care of at the highest level, especially by the State of California, which is well known (for) its poor management & high taxes!"   The U.S. now houses thousands of migrants at the border, but is running out of beds and instead is releasing new arrivals into the U.S. on their promise to appear at asylum hearings that might not occur for two years.   The Department of Homeland Security has said that Congress has not appropriated any money to transport the migrants from the border to far-flung sanctuary cities across the U.S., while the Immigration and Custom Enforcement agency has called it an "unnecessary operational burden." Sanders said, "Nobody thinks this is the ideal solution," sending migrants to sanctuary cities. But she said mayors of cities "who want this... should be looking to help" Trump resolve the crisis at the border. She accused Congress of wanting to spend "all of its time investigating the president" rather than dealing with the immigration turmoil at the border. Trump tweeted, "So interesting to see the Mayor of Oakland and other Sanctuary Cities NOT WANT our currently 'detained immigrants' after release due to the ridiculous court ordered 20 day rule. If they don’t want to serve our Nation by taking care of them, why should other cities & towns?" Trump was referring to a court ruling prohibiting the U.S. from detaining migrant minors, those under 18 years old, for more than 20 days, before being required to release them to relatives in the U.S. or other care givers. A key Republican lawmaker, Sen. Lindsey Graham, told another Fox News show, "Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo," that after the current two-week congressional recess ends, he would introduce legislation that would authorize the detention of children beyond 20 days, "toughen up our asylum standards," and allow migrant children to be returned to Central American countries, which is not now allowed once they have entered the United States. "We're never going to change this with troops and walls at the border," Graham said of the U.S. immigration crisis. "Doing what we're doing is not working." He added, "If you get one foot into the United States," migrants can seek asylum. "The word is out that if you come with a minor, you're never going to get deported. We need to change that narrative. We need troops at the border. We need a law. But these [U.S.] laws are insane."

I was given a choice of joining another Agent Class that would start 3 weeks later or join a Coordinator Class that was starting in late Aug 65. I went with the Coordinator class as I was anxious to leave the B'bird. Volunteered for Vietnam but ended up in Germany. I was allowed to choose a unit in Germany. I went to the 531st MI Company (Collection). Initially worked at Frankfurt Station before going to Nurnberg Field Team and then Kassel Field Team. I wore civilian clothes the entire time in Germany. Our unit had an Area Studies (intelligence collection) mission. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and duties in Germany. I separated from active duty at Ft Dix, NJ in late Jan. 1968, and returned home to California. Entered law enforcement on April 1, 1968, with the Alameda Co. Sheriff's Dept. Then got hired by Union City PD from which I retired in late 1988. Worked for a year as a Federal Investigator. Then worked for the Alameda Co. Public Defender's Office in Oakland and retired from that agency in late 2005. My wife & I live in rural Solano County, California which is midway between Oakland and Sacramento, CA.

Reporter slaps down Donald Trump's claim New York Times failed to observe basic tenet of journalismDonald Trump has unleashed a series of angry tweets attacking The New York Times over a report claiming he was thinking about sending undocumented immigrants into so-called “sanctuary cities” represented by Democrats. The president accused the newspaper of failing to “call to check for truth”, only for White House correspondent Maggie Haberman to explain the Times had in fact emailed his press team “three times for comment and [the] press office acknowledged receipt of emails”.The newspaper claimed the idea of releasing immigrants detained by federal agencies into cities which had previously offered protection from deportation had been considered by the White House.Although Mr Trump said the story was “knowingly wrong on almost every fact”, he appeared to confirm and validate its truth with his own tweets. He wrote: “Due to the fact that Democrats are unwilling to change our very dangerous immigration laws, we are indeed, as reported, giving strong considerations to placing Illegal Immigrants in Sanctuary Cities only.”The president insisted the newspaper was guilty of “really corrupt reporting”, stating: “They will lie & cheat anyway possible to make me look bad. In 6 years they will be gone.”His other late night-tweets on Saturday suggested Mr Trump has refused to give up on the idea of sending migrants to sanctuary cities. He claimed the nation had the “absolute legal right to have apprehended illegal immigrants transferred”.The president attacked the Mayor of Oakland Libby Schaaf after she criticised the idea as “an outrageous abuse of power”.> POTUS really ought to check in with his press team more often, or they with him. We hereby demand that they be taken care of at the highest level, especially by the State of California, which is well known or its poor management & high taxes!> > — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) > > April 14, 2019Despite Mr Trump’s threatening tweets on the subject, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has said the idea of sending released immigrants to particular US cities had been raised and dismissed.“This was a suggestion that was floated and rejected, which ended any further discussion,” said a DHS spokesman. The plan discussed by Mr Trump would face major financial and legal issues. Flights chartered by ICE cost about $7,785 (around £6,000) per flight hour, according to the agency, and require multiple members of staff, including an in-flight medical professional. It is also unclear how long the immigrants would stay in these cities because they are required to provide an address to federal authorities – typically of a family member – as a condition of their release.“It’s illogical,” said Angela Chan, policy director and senior attorney with the San Francisco-based Asian Law Caucus. “It’s just alarming that they are spending so much effort and so much time to engage in political theatre.”Additional reporting by AP

"All politics is personal."      Comment   Translate Page

and that was only one of many memorable lines in one of the most remarkable political speeches I have ever heard.

My wife called me down when Mayor Pete came on stage.  I watched.  I listened.

No, the speech was not on an overarching theme.

It did not offer specific policies.

What it did was lay the ground for a very different kind of presidential campaign.

The line I quoted in my title is key, because it underlies Buttegieg’s approach, which seems based ont the telling of stories to help connect people, which includes making pointed comments about key issues confronting our society.

Hearing the number of times he went “outside the wire” but in the context of the people in his vehicle not caring about his politics, but keeping them safe.

Having three key issues, but expanding their definitions, so that we rightly heard that the greatest security issue is addressing climate change.  He talked about a 1,000 year rainfall and 500 year flood in South Bend, a hurricane in Puerto Rico, floods in Nebraska, and fires in California.  He could have added that climate change is one of the factors driving farmers to flee Central America.

On issue after issue he phrased things in a succinct way that could connect with American people.  Issues that spoke to teachers like me, to women, to people of color, to union members like me, to millennials.

John F. Kennedy told us that the torch had been passed to a new generation.  He was the first President born in the 20th century, born in 1917, succeeding Dwight D Eisenhower, born in 1890, some 27 years earlier and at the time of his leaving office the oldest President we had ever had —  Kennedy was the youngest elected, the 2nd youngest (after Teddy Roosevelt) to serve.  The current president — as well as two of his three most recent predecessors — was born in 1946, about 3 weeks after I was.  Mayor Pete was born in January 1982. 37 ½ years after the current resident of the Oval was born, which would be the largest such gap in history.  Our current Chief Executive would not at the end of this term be the oldest ever —  that would be Ronald Reagan, who was probably at age 77 already showing signs of senility (one reason I have trouble with both Biden and Sanders).  Buttegieg would be the youngest elected and to serve.

The old Studebaker factory was jammed.  I do not know the size of the crowd, but I would say perhaps 5,000 to maybe even 8,000.  South Bend has a bit over 100,000 people. Oakland, where Kamala Harris had her kickoff crowd of about 20,000, has a population of over 400,000.  In otherwords, Mayor Pete’s crowd was proportionally at least as large if not larger than that of Harris.

Is this posting an endorsement of Mayor Pete. Not yet, although I can see my way to supporting him in the primary, maybe even if asked going to work for him.  For one reason, and that is the third of his three points, Democracy.  As I wrote yesterday, I view that as the single most important issue confronting us, because if we do not fix that we cannot fix anything else.

If you did not see the speech, do yourself a favor, find the video online and watch all 40 minutes.

Then you will understand why I say it was one of the most remarkable political speeches I have seen or heard.
