JoJo’s Nickelodeon special entitled JoJo’s Dream Birthday is set to air on Saturday, May 18, at 8:00 p.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon USA.

Nickelodeon superstar JoJo Siwa is a YouTube personality, singer, dancer, entrepreneur, social media influencer, The New York Times bestselling author and star on Nickelodeon’s Lip Sync Battle Shorties. Siwa connects with her fans through many channels: via social media she has over 9.4 million subscribers with over 2.1 billion views on YouTube, she has over 8.1 million followers on Instagram, over 425,000 Twitter followers, over 17.4 million followers on TikTok (formerly Musical.ly), and over 534,000 likes on Facebook; through her SIWANATOR club, which stands against negativity and bullying; through her global reach of consumer products including her signature bows, accessories, apparel, arts and crafts, cosmetics, home goods and party supplies; and with her hugely popular singles, “Boomerang,” which has been viewed over 682 million times and is RIAA certified platinum, “Kid in a Candy Store,” “Hold The Drama,” and “High Top Shoes”

Siwa will also take the stage at this year’s Nickelodeon SlimeFest--a two-day family-friendly music festival held in Chicago, Ill., at Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island on June 8 and 9--along with Pitbull, Bebe Rexha and T-Pain. Siwa helped kick off Nickelodeon’s inaugural U.S. SlimeFest last year, where she performed in front of over 24,000 fans.

Siwa recently won her third Kids’ Choice Award for “Favorite Social Music Star.” Her previous Choice Awards include “Favorite Viral Music Artist” in 2017 and “Favorite Musical YouTube Creator” in 2018. She also performed at Kids’ Choice Mexico 2018.

In November, Siwa released her first EP, D.R.E.A.M. The Music, featuring four new songs: “D.R.E.A.M,” “My Story,” “Everyday Popstars” and “Only Getting Better.” The music video for “D.R.E.A.M.” was released on Siwa’s YouTube channel and to date has garnered over 40 million views. Just last month, Siwa dropped her latest single, “Bop.” The accompanying music video has already accumulated over 4.4 million views on her YouTube channel.

In 2016, Nickelodeon and Siwa entered an exclusive licensing partnership to develop a line of consumer products inspired by Siwa. Categories span toys, apparel, accessories, consumer electronics, Halloween costumes and more. To date, over 50 million JoJo Bows have been sold. Siwa’s consumer products are available internationally, including the UK, Canada, Australia and Mexico.

Siwa launched her first animated shorts series, The JoJo & BowBow Show Show starring Siwa and her furry best friend BowBow. She also works alongside Nick Cannon in Nickelodeon’s hit competition series Lip Sync Battle Shorties. She has also appeared on various Nickelodeon live-action series including School of Rock and The Thundermans. Siwa performed a medley of hits at Nickelodeon’s 2018 Kids’ Choice Awards, including her triple-platinum smash “Boomerang.” She also won two blimps for Favorite Viral Music Artist in 2017 and Musical YouTube Creator in 2018. This summer, she performed at Nickelodeon’s 2018 Kids’ Choice Awards Mexico.

Howdy, pardners!

Let’s see...

Where did I leave off?

After the Stoner Jam 19 SXSW deal, we drove to Ft Worth, TX. Played this place call the
Ridglea Lounge. Nice staff, great sound.

Played with two killer bands. Druids from Iowa and Yatra from Maryland.

Our third show with Druids.

Had some old school friends stop by for the gig. We’re talking Ruthie’s Inn era peeps!
Always a pleasure to see familiar faces on the road.

Next day we headed back to Austin and the Gravityfest. Played to a much bigger crowd this time.

No sound checks to speak of so far.

Not even a line check for us tonight! All rushed and hurried.

My voice was giving me trouble again too. I KNOW I will find that right balance sooner or later!

Had fun regardless.

On to Memphis!

We played on St Patrick’s Day at this place called Growlers. They had wide screen TV’s with Nintendo! Played some Donkey Kong and Mario 3. I used to play mad video games. Nowadays, not so much. Love the classics tho.

My favorite band of the night was Backwoods Payback from Pennsylvania.

We played well. Vox still struggling a bit. Getting closer tho.

After the show we joined our bassist Noah’s brother, Ryan and Ryan’s husband, Matt to a bit of drinking and late night entertainment at the famous Beale St.

We had the next night off, you see.

A travel day.

Woke up and started driving to Denver. Aaron and Sebastien have been doing the bulk of the driving. Seb cause he wants to see America. Aaron? Maybe he just likes to drive. Seb is amazing with the parking, by the way. We have a 15 seater van and a UHaul trailer, so in many instances we need a pro. Seb’s our man!

After a stop overnight in Missouri, we headed for Your Mom’s Place in Colorado.
Great staff, great lighting and we actually got our very first soundcheck!

I, personally had some technical difficulties at first and had my doubts about the performance. Luckily, we recorded the set.

Bammo!

Vocals on point!

Finally!!

Woo Hoo!

I do have to say that I consulted a friend, for some advice. A certain professional rocker who will not be named.

Tried it...

It worked!

Stoked!

Thank you, brother!

Had a drink with my super old school homie, Chris Ritter. Definitely an OG. That was nice.

Driving through Wyoming now en route to SLC.

We’ll talk soon.

Much Love..

Gee Double Yoo

Regional qualifiers

Athletes from Inland Northwest colleges and area athletes from other schools who have met the qualifying standards and declared to compete in the NCAA regional competition May 30-31. Conference champions (CC) earn entry without meeting the standards. The 10,000 meters, decathlon and heptathlon are not contested at the regional level, but are filled with athletes who meet either the automatic or provisional qualifying standards. Top-five finishers in individual events and top three relay teams from regionals advance to the NCAA championships. A select number of at-large athletes who didn’t achieve those finishes will fill the national fields, based on the national descending order of performance lists.

Studio: Taylor Marketing & All-Star Wrestling
The IWA was the first wrestling promotion to have a television program nationwide. Promoters Eddie Eihorn and Pedro Martinez put together a huge talent pool that would provide a national and international promotion with more stars than any other promotion had ever done. The list of stars in this first of many to come DVD series is like a who's who of the 1970's wrestling superstars. The IWA spared no expense to give the fans only the best. Jack Reynolds was a well noted and household name for his coverage of professional wrestling. Tex McKenzie not only wrestled, but also filled in as the color analyst. Ring announcing was handled by Rick Martin, who in real life was son of promoter, Pedro Martinez, his given name was Ronnie Martinez. They all provided professional insight and knowledge of the king of sports, professional wrestling. Not that Big Time Wrestling from Detroit had to take any back seats.

Featured here are a few of the Big Time Wrestling moments with the wisdom of Veteran mic man Chuck Allen and his partner Terry Sullivan filling us in on the action and shows coming up and the latest news. D.J. Augustin scored 25 points, including the tiebreaking 3-pointer with 3.5 seconds left, and the Orlando Magic beat the Toronto Raptors 104-101 in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference first-round series on Saturday.

Kawhi Leonard got a final shot for Toronto, but missed the rim with his 3-pointer from the top.

Aaron Gordon had 10 points and 10 rebounds, Evan Fournier scored 16 points and Jonathan Isaac had 11 as the No. 7-seeded Magic became the latest team to beat Toronto in the opening game of a playoff series. The Raptors are 2-14 in playoff openers.

Leonard scored 25 points, Pascal Siakam had 24 and Fred VanVleet had 14 for the second-seeded Raptors, who reclaimed the lead after trailing by 16 points in the second quarter, but couldn't hold on down the stretch.

Toronto got 13 points apiece from Danny Green and Marc Gasol, but guard Kyle Lowry finished scoreless, missing all seven of his attempts. Lowry did have eight assists and seven rebounds.

Leonard hit a tying 3 with 1:35 left, then put Toronto up 101-99 with a jumper at 1:02. Augustin made a layup to tie it again with 44 seconds left, then connected from long range for the fourth time to win the game.

Augustin's 3 was the seventh lead change of the final quarter and the 13th of the game.

Augustin made 9 of 13 attempts, going 4 of 5 from beyond the arc.

Leonard made all four of his attempts in the first and added a pair of free throws. He scored 11 points in the opening quarter as Toronto led 30-25.

Leading 42-41 with 3:46 remaining in the second, Orlando got 10 points from Augustin in a 15-0 run that put the Magic up 57-41 with 55 seconds left. Siakam stopped Toronto's drought with a jump shot, and Gasol and Green added 3-pointers but the Raptors trailed 57-49 at halftime.

Leonard scored five points as Toronto used a 12-2 spurt at the start of the third, reclaiming the lead on Gasol's 3 at 8:19. Siakam scored eight points in the third, while Leonard and Green each had seven, as the Raptors took a narrow 76-75 lead to the fourth.

Seasonal Sniffles? Immunotherapy Tablets Catch On As An Alternative To Allergy Shots       Comment   Translate Page
Sneezing, runny nose, congestion, or irritated eyes? Yes, we hear you: The misery of seasonal allergies is real. A lot of people find temporary relief with over-the-counter medications, but these don't treat the cause. As we head into grass pollen season over the next few months, here's an option to consider: Many allergists now prescribe immunotherapy tablets, which work in the same way as allergy shots, to some of their patients with grass allergies. But unlike allergy shots, which require frequent trips to the doctor, you can take the tablets at home. "It's a little wafer you put under your tongue, and it dissolves in about 10 seconds," says allergist Mike Tankersley , who practices in Memphis, Tenn. The treatment, known as sublingual immunotherapy, or SLIT, is more convenient than shots and has been shown to be safe . But it won't work for everyone. Each tablet targets just one allergy. There are four FDA-approved tablet products on the market to treat grass pollens, house dust

Event Update For 2019-04-10      Comment   Translate Page

http://jumpingjackflashhypothesis.blogspot.com/2012/02/jumping-jack-flash-hypothesis-its-gas.html

The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

Yazoo City's Fred's store to close      Comment   Translate Page

Yazoo City’s Fred’s store is closing.

Yazoo City’s location is one of 159 stores being closed nationwide by the Memphis, Tennessee-based corporation. Thirty-one stores are closing in Mississippi. An announcement from the company said it will close the 159 underperforming stores by the end of May and “going out of business” sales will start soon.

Yazoo City previously lost Payless Shoe Store in the same shopping center when the company closed many stores due to falling sales. Many retail stores are struggling as online shopping grows.

Fred’s has a long history in Yazoo City. The first Fred’s Dollar Store opened in downtown Yazoo City in 1967 on the corner of Main and Commercial streets.

It relocated to a larger space on West Jefferson Street in 1973.

At the time Fred’s moved into its present location in 2003, it was the second largest Fred’s store in the state and one of the state’s most profitable locations.

          Science updates!      Comment   Translate Page

It's hard to evade politics, even in a weekend science update. for example when a top Republican factotum declares: “Science is a Democrat thing.”

Um. They say it proudly! Yes, science, but also every single fact-based profession. Including medicine, law, teaching, journalism and those "deep state" enemies -- the Intel/FBI/military officer corps -- who know that fact and science and climate change are real.

== Long ago at least they had an excuse for ignorance... ==

As we re-examine our distant past...

We’re finding numerous past eras when the male population in a region was winnowed to a narrow gene pool or else replaced by newcomers. One massive swing happened about 12,000 years ago, about the same time that two technologies might have exacerbated male death rates: agricultural kingdoms and the availability of plentiful beer. (This is actually my own theory, based upon traveller reports from Polynesia and other places that told of kings ordering the instant death of offending louts. It would help explain human resistance to addiction, which though terribly imperfect is greater than in most species.)

Now comes evidence that a mass migration of males transformed the genetic make-up of people in Spain during the Bronze Age. It remains unclear whether there was a violent invasion or whether a male-centric social structure played an important role.” Interesting article!  And yet, in my “contrarian gadfly” role, I must point out that while dominance by top king-chief-patriarchs seems the most likely explanation, there IS another way that a Y chromosome winnowing could have occurred.

Female dominance. There have been a few cases of matriarchy in which women councils exerted strong control over which males were allowed to breed. It is quite conceivable (get it?) for such councils to enforce hypergamy – preference to share those males who meet strict standards, rather than “settle” for average.

A mild version of this practice was seen among the Cherokee and Iroquois, for example.  Yes, our sad litany of nasty and oppressive patriarchies was far more common. But it’s wrong simply to assume that Y chromosome winnowing happened because of inter-male strife. It might have been female selection, which is actually the great driver of evolution in many non-human species.

== More evidence from the past ==

And the Denisovan story gets even more complicated and strange: our Denisovan cousins may have mated with modern humans as recently as 15,000 years ago.

A fossil discovery in North Dakota is strongly believed to be a fish that was blasted and killed precisely the very day that the Cretaceous ended with the Chicxulub meteorite impact, 66 million years ago, the most incredible (and precise) paleontological discovery of the century, so far. If this story is even 5% true...wow. Just wow.

Meanwhile a new fossil trove in China - the Qingjiang biota - has yielded thousands of Cambrian period specimens, with dozens of new species, yet to be named.

Gabonionta are the earliest multicellular macroscopic organisms discovered so far, vastly older –by almost 4x ! – than previous evidence for complex life. Known only from their fossilized mucous trails in black shale from Gabon. Likely something like colonial amoebae or slime molds, they seem to have appeared almost right after Earth finally got appreciable oxygen in its atmosphere. Good science reporting.

My old Caltech housemate Joe Kirschvink has done it again, proving (with colleagues) that humans have a small but verified sensitivity to magnetic fields.

== Tech updates ==

Via Peter Diamandis: Researchers at Boston University have mathematically designed a 3D acoustic metamaterial that can block up to 94 percent of noise flowing through it. Most dramatically, however, the 3D-printed structure reflects noise-producing vibrations without impeding the passage of light or airflow itself.

GauGAN, from NVIDIA, may be the “MS Paint for the AI age.” Using a generative adversarial network (GAN) trained on 1 million Flickr images, GauGAN can create photorealistic images from just a few lines drawn by a user. As an example, a user could click on “tree,” draw a line, and GauGAN will create an image of a tree trunk.

And “Google has successfully shrunk its speech algorithm storage demands down to 80MB, rendering its speech recognizer small enough to fit on your smartphone, and work offline.”

A world game-changer would be to wean billions off cattle or other inefficient and eco-damaging meats, either with vegetable substitutes like the (yummy) Beyond Burger or else real-meat by tissue culture. Latest: “Memphis Meats, for example, recently filed a patent describing a method to create real chicken and beef tissue using CRISPR.”

Goodyear unveiled its new concept Aero tire, designed to run on roads and double as a propulsion system for flying vehicles.  Yes, the tires become rotors capable of downward thrust and lift. Yipe. Amazing tech.

Optical interferometry has long promised to help us parse distant planets from their hugely brighter nearby stars. Now a group claims to have done it. But then, a few weeks later, we got that image of a real black hole(!) via a method very similar.

 == short takes ==

Methane is so good at trapping heat that one ton of the gas causes 32 times as much warming as one ton of CO2. And Methane is spiking. The possible sources are worrisome. The GOP blocked Obama efforts to fund more inspectors to prevent venting from oil fields. But Trump savagely cut them further and progress toward an international treaty have foundered.

Even worse are signs that methane is bubbling forth from permafrost and undersea hydrate ices, threatening the “blurp” cascade that would truly make it all deadly, making Earth an almost literal hell. These people are outright enemies of your children.

Slime molds’ ability to reconfigure their volume while fleeing from spots of light has enabled scientists to use these biological computers to solve complex mathematical  conundrums like the Traveling Salesman Problem.

Our opportunity to save ourselves includes ideas like the “Circular Economy.” Watch the video. Then re-read Earth?

An article on Vox discusses the latest silly-wrongheaded attempt by zealots to shout “messages” into the cosmos without ever doing risk analysis or talking it over with the rest of humanity, or allowing their assumptions to be examined. The saddest part is their dislike of science fiction, since SF explores a wide horizon of possibilities, and their religious fanaticism allows for only one.

Wallace’s bee, the size of your thumb and thought extinct, rediscovered!

Evidence that the huge Deccan Traps volcanic eruptions started just before the Yucatan asteroid impact, and hence may have severely weakened the dinosaurs and other species… but then got even worse after the impact, possibly tightening the noose. “The researchers' dates are also consistent with a major shift in the properties of the erupted rock occurring at the same time as the impact. This supports the idea that the impact's seismic effects reached across the entire planet.”

Wired ran a story on Valentine’s Day about OpenAI, the nonprofit institute founded by Elon Musk and Y Combinator founder Sam Altman, which has apparently designed a system that can learn natural language patterns better than any previous attempt so far after feeding it eight million web pages to train it. What is newsworthy to me about this is what they did next: they stopped to consider the implications.  “It could be that someone who has malicious intent would be able to generate high-quality fake news,” an OAI vice president told Wired.

We are a glorious, scientific civilization. Pictures of black holes! SpaceX triple landings! New disease cures! Meat substitutes! And if the enemies of all this want to make this partisan, then let's go.

New Arkansas food labeling law termed 'veg-on-veg crime'      Comment   Translate Page
Reason writes here on new Arkansas legislation aimed at preventing vegetable-based food from being called meat and, particularly, on a crackdown in that law aimed at those who'd refer to cauliflower as rice.

The headline:

Arkansas’ New Food-Labeling Law Is Veg-on-Veg Crime

As the behest of agricultural lobbies, regulators around the world are making food marketing way more complicated than it needs to be.

The rice lobby in Arkansas is powerful, of course, and had no trouble passing a law making it a crime punishable by fine to label something cauliflower rice. That is, cauliflower chopped up into a rice shape. The sponsor was Rep. David Hillman, himself a member of the rice industry. Writes Baylen Linnekin, described as a "food lawyer":

“Yes, I will plead guilty to anyone that says I supported this to defend the rice industry,” Rep. Hillman told the Memphis Commercial Appeal. “But this is really a fairness issue and only affects those who intentionally mislead people.”

I’m not so sure.

“Efforts to ban words on food labels won’t stop consumers from purchasing the options they seek,” says Michele Simon, executive director of the Plant Based Foods Association, a trade group, in an email to me this week. “Instead of trying to pass unconstitutional laws, the rice (and meat and dairy) industries should be focusing on how to better meet changing consumer preferences. It’s called market competition.”

That sounds more like it to me.
Could you combine some cauliflower "rice" with soy "milk" and cook up rice pudding for your restaurant? And, if you did and called it rice pudding, would the Arkansas food cops come calling?

Another thought for the legislature to ponder, this one for meat champion Sen. Bruce Maloch: "Beefsteak" tomatoes?

More seriously, can this law really be enforced? It seems to be aimed at products such as the one illustrated above that refers to "riced" cauliflower . The law has this language for a violation:

Affixing a label that uses a variation of rice in the name of the agricultural product when the agricultural product is not rice or derived from rice.
I don't believe the term "riced cauiflower" is misleading. Any more than hot dog. Must cops become lexicographers?

Powerful Storms Continue to Move Across South      Comment   Translate Page
Powerful, deadly storms continue to move across the South on Sunday after producing suspected tornadoes and damaging several homes. National Weather Service meteorologist John Moore said a possible twister touched down Saturday in the Vicksburg, Mississippi, area. No injuries have been reported, but officials said several businesses and vehicles were damaged. Trees were down throughout the hilly city on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi. Heavy rains and storms continued to rake the Magnolia State into the night, moving into Alabama. Multiple people were injured and several homes were damaged in Hamilton, Mississippi, said Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley. A tornado was reported in the area 60 miles (100 kilometers) southwest of Memphis, Tennessee, at the time. At least one mobile home was destroyed, throwing a man from the mobile home. No fatalities were reported. The roof of a hotel in New Albany, Mississippi, was damaged, although the cause was unclear. Mississippi State University's 21,000 students huddled in basements and hallways as a tornado came near the school's campus in Starkville. University spokesman Sid Salter said some debris, possibly carried by the tornado, was found on campus, but no injuries were reported and no buildings were damaged. Trees were down and at least some minor structural damage was reported in residential areas east of the campus. In East Texas, the Angelina County Sheriff's Office said an 8-year-old and a 3-year-old died when strong winds toppled a tree onto the back of their family's car in Lufkin while it was in motion. Capt. Alton Lenderman said the parents, who were in the front seats, were not injured. The large storm system also knocked out power to thousands and caused some flash flooding. The weather service said the system is expected to shift to the Ohio Valley and the Southeast on Sunday. More than 140,000 customers remained without power in Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas late Saturday. Robertson County Sheriff Gerald Yezak told The Associated Press a tornado hit the small Central Texas city of Franklin, overturning mobile homes and damaging other residences. Franklin is located about 125 miles (200 kilometers) south of Dallas. The weather service said preliminary information showed an EF-3 tornado touched down with winds of 140 mph (225.3 kph). Crews will continue to survey the damage over the next few days. Two people were hospitalized for injuries not thought to be life-threatening, while others were treated at the scene for minor injuries, Yezak said. Some people had to be extricated from their homes. Meteorologist Monique Sellers said they've received reports of downed trees, as well as damage to buildings and a transmission tower. Winds of up to 60 mph (96.56 kph) were reported in Cherokee County, Texas, damaging two homes in Alto but not injuring anyone. Alto is situated about 140 miles (225 kilometers) north of Houston.
