Comment on Federal Judge Attacks Trump As Adopting The Same Rhetoric and Tactics As The KKK by George       Comment   Translate Page
"I told you so" (Paraphrased). - Abraham Lincoln _______________ Oil and water do not mix without powerful, artificial, coercive emulsifiers, in this case, unconstitutional "Affirmative Action Privilege," "Generational Welfare" and the entire plethora of forms of unconstitutional communistic redistribution/social engineering. _______ OK, OK, hold on, Abe! Ladies and Gentlemen, Abraham Lincoln would like to say a few words. Go ahead, Abe. Ahem! "If all earthly power were given me," said Lincoln in a speech delivered in Peoria, Illinois, on October 16, 1854, "I should not know what to do, as to the existing institution [of slavery]. My first impulse would be to free all the slaves, and send them to Liberia, to their own native land." After acknowledging that this plan's "sudden execution is impossible," he asked whether freed blacks should be made "politically and socially our equals?" "My own feelings will not admit of this," he said, "and [even] if mine would, we well know that those of the great mass of white people will not ... We can not, then, make them equals." Thank you. - Abraham Lincoln

CAPA came out of the successful effort in 1969 to save the Ohio Theatre from the wrecking ball, and it went on to save other historic venues, including the Palace Theatre, Lincoln Theatre and Southern Theatre.

My name is Jack Dalton and I'm a Monster Hunter.

Ghosts are not supposed to exist but I'm on my way to Springfield Illinois to hunt one down. Strange occurrences have plagued the town for several years.

The local residents think it's former President Abraham Lincoln that haunts the town. Now a political hot potato, my boss J Edgar Hoover has assigned me to personally either find or stop the ghosts if they exist.

Regional qualifiers

Athletes from Inland Northwest colleges and area athletes from other schools who have met the qualifying standards and declared to compete in the NCAA regional competition May 30-31. Conference champions (CC) earn entry without meeting the standards. The 10,000 meters, decathlon and heptathlon are not contested at the regional level, but are filled with athletes who meet either the automatic or provisional qualifying standards. Top-five finishers in individual events and top three relay teams from regionals advance to the NCAA championships. A select number of at-large athletes who didn’t achieve those finishes will fill the national fields, based on the national descending order of performance lists.

Douglas Preston - Lincoln Child
újabb elképesztően kalandos, bizarrul megdöbbentő kötetet tartanak a kezükben,
amelynek főhőse, Pendergast különleges ügynök talán olyan meszszire
merészkedik, ahonnan már nincs visszaút.

Face it - Lincoln, Crawley, Yeovil and the last team could be Blyth Spartans and they would all be rubbing their hands together and drooling at the prospect of playing our lot, after our performance today their managers must be totally crap if they don't go in for the kill - that is the bit that saddens me :(

The Last Weeks of Abraham Lincoln: A Day-by-Day Account of His Personal, Political, and Military Challenges by David Alan Johnson Book details Title: The Last Weeks of Abraham Lincoln: A Day-by-Day Account of His Personal, Political, and Military Challenges Author: David Alan Johnson Pages: 384 Format: PDF / EPUB / MOBI ISBN: 9781633883970 Publisher: Prometheus Books Description The Last Weeks of Abraham Lincoln: A Day-by-Day Account of His Personal, Political, and Military Challenges by David Alan Johnson This day-by-day account of Abraham Lincoln's last six weeks of life covers a period of extraordinary events, not only for the president himself but for the fate of the nation. From March 4 to April 15, 1865--a momentous time for the nation--Abraham Lincoln delivered his second inaugural address, supervised climatic battles leading up to the end of the Civil War, learned that Robert E. Lee had surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox, and finally was killed by assassin John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theatre. Weaving an arresting narrative around the historical facts, historian David Alan Johnson brings to life the president's daily routine, as he guided the country through one of the most tumultuous periods of American history. The reader follows the president as he greets visitors at the inaugural ball, asks abolitionist Frederick Douglass's opinion of the inaugural address, confers with Generals Grant and Sherman on the final stages of the war, visits a field hospital for wounded outside City Point, Virginia, and attempts to calm his high-strung wife Mary, who appears on the verge of nervous collapse. We read excerpts from press reviews of Lincoln's second inaugural address, learn that Mrs. Lincoln's ball gown created a sensation, and are given eye-witness accounts of the celebrations and drunken revelry that broke out in Washington when the end of the war was announced. This engagingly written narrative history of a short but extremely important span of days vividly depicts the actions and thoughts of one of our greatest presidents during a time of national emergency.           The podcast is dead ... long live the podcast!      Comment   Translate Page

All things must end: The Collinsport Historical Society podcast is officially dead.

After more than a year of trying to breathe life back into slowly cooling form, letting go seemed like the right thing to do. After a point my attempts at mercy had become a form of torture, not just for the podcast but for its listeners. "It's coming back!" I've promised more than once. "Soon!"

Then the bird said “Nevermore.”

We launched the podcast on Dec. 13, 2012 with an episode devoted to House of Dark Shadows and an interview with the always gracious Kathryn Leigh Scott. She's been a great friend to the website over the years and has never declined a request from us. That the podcast exists at all can be credited to the support of two people, Kathryn and Will McKinley, who got me into this whole podcast thing in the first place.

In the years following, The Collinsport Historical Society shared 93 additional episodes, adding contributions from the producers at Big Finish in the UK and, most recently, the Bodice Tipplers podcast. All told, these 94 episodes have racked up almost 50,000 downloads.

Now, a few of you are probably in a panic over this ... especially the folks who have kindly loaned me their time and talent in the last few weeks to help revive the podcast. And here's where things come into focus: The Collinsport Historical Society podcast is returning ... in one week!

So, why all the talk about death? When the podcast returns it's going to knock your socks off ... and I want to maximize that impact. In order to do that I'm going to have to take down the previous 94 episodes of the series. When things began, I didn't entirely know what I was doing and violated a few copyright laws by including pop songs. It seemed clever at the time to include "Abraham Lincoln" by Clutch in my interview with David Selby, but I'd like to be able to share the podcast with a wider audience ... and that means having to re-edit five years of work to extract those songs. Many of these episodes will come back at a later date sans copyright infringements, but for the time being they're going into the vault.

Which means: If you want our previous episodes, you'd better download them soon. (Note: Bodice Tipplers may or may not be moving to its own dedicated feed. It hasn't been decided yet.)

I'm going to spend the next week sharing daily highlights of the CHS podcast. It will be a time to reflect on where we've been, and to remind people to get these episodes before they're gone. After the vault doors close it's going to up to you good people to share these episodes with each other.

I'll have more to say about the new podcast on Monday ... if you're one of the people contributing to the new series, though, feel free to start telling people about it now.

Stay tuned!

Spring beauty in a yarn: pink and yellow merging to present apricot.

A skein from Fancy, the sister of Nancy, both Coopworth x Lincoln Longwool sheep.
Nancy is such a spinning delight, that I've enlisted her sister's wool to lengthen this spinning bonus. Fancy seems to have all of her sister's wonderful qualities.

Her fleece has been spun from the locks into a curly textured and somewhat fluffy skein of 60 yards.

The yarn is a worsted weight wool that is loosely spun. It is not smooth: many of the curls stand out from the yarn or curl around it.

I would use a size 13 needle for knitting. Be sure to work quite loosely as you do not want to choke this yarn.

Thanks from all of us at KnoxFarmFiber.

I am late to the party as i accidentally stumbled upon the series while using a free trial of HUlu. I was hooked from season one. Great show. So positive and i love that it shows working class African American living and working among a diverse community. It shows how we have more in common and working together we can get things done. No stereotypes, buffoonary or oversexualized imagery. Just good acting and writing. Hate this was how it ended. The fans deserved better. Bring it back please.

Cellist Yo-Yo Ma Plays Bach In Shadow Of Border Crossing       Comment   Translate Page

World-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma brought his Bach Project to the sister cities of Laredo, Texas, and Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, on Saturday. Laredo's "Day of Action" featured performances in both cities to celebrate the relationship between the two communities.

Ma played the opening notes of Johann Sebastian Bach's "Suite No. 1 for Unaccompanied Cello" in a park next to the Juarez-Lincoln International Bridge, one of the crossings that connect the U.S. and Mexican cities.

The Laredo performance took place on an elevated stage before an audience of officials and onlookers. Concerns over possible rain disappeared as Ma began to play in the morning sunshine.

It was part of his Bach Project, which uses the composer's 300-year-old music to explore connections between cultures. The project has taken him all over the world. On Friday it brought him to Laurie Auditorium at Trinity University in San Antonio, and on Saturday it brought him to Laredo, within a few feet of the Rio Grande.

"As you all know, as you did and do and will do, in culture, we build bridges, not walls," he said. After his performance, he gestured to the bridge to his right. "I've lived my life at the borders. Between cultures. Between disciplines. Between musics. Between generations."

Mateo Bailey, 16, lives in San Antonio. He grew up in El Paso, plays the cello, and is the son of Grammy Award-winning cellist Zuill Bailey.

He felt Ma's performance had special significance "because this event is on the border. And I'm half-Mexican as well as half-American ... and for him to connect cello with what's happening in the world is like, it's a cultural bridge that was just built, and it's amazing."

Betty DeLeon praised the cellist for visiting. "It speaks of him. What a wonderful human being to take his time and come to our tiny little town to share the importance of culture. On the border. It's amazing. It's a privilege to be a part of this."

Pete Saenz, mayor of Laredo, said despite the river and despite the bridge spanning overhead, the border is one community.

"And although people may perceive us as being so different, we're not," he said. "Here the border is extremely unique in that it's one organism. I've always said we're interdependent, interconnected. We survived because the border side survives, especially here on the border area."

This "Day of Action" also included a performance in Plaza Juarez in Nuevo Laredo, a few blocks from the international crossing. Its overall theme was an appreciation for the connections between the two cities, which see themselves as one community.

Ma was originally scheduled to play on the actual bridge, which would be briefly closed. The planned closure would've been a collaborative effort between officials and residents on both sides of the border. But the traffic and pedestrian delays the performance would have caused convinced officials to move the locale to the Tres Laredos Park right next to the bridge.

The famous cellist has studied and performed the German composer's music for six decades.

In 2018, Ma set out on a two-year journey to perform Bach's six suites for cello in 36 locations around the world. He felt the music had an ability to connect cultures and humanity from all walks of life. He said that is what motivated him to launch the project.

WKU student wins Hearst Multimedia Enterprise Reporting Competition      Comment   Translate Page

WKU student Skyler Ballard won the third multimedia competition of the 2018-2019 Hearst Journalism Awards Program and qualified for the National Multimedia Championship in June in San Francisco.

Ballard, a senior from Coxs Creek, won the Multimedia Enterprise Reporting Competition for his piece titled En Muerto En Vida published in Wkupj.com. Ballard received a $3,000 award; WKU’s School of Journalism & Broadcasting received a matching grant.

WKU senior Brook Joyner of Chattanooga, Tennessee, finished ninth.

After three of four multimedia competitions, WKU is in third place behind University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The rest of the top 10 is: University of Florida; Arizona State University; Pennsylvania State University; University of Montana; University of Missouri (tie); University of South Carolina (tie); Brigham Young University (tie); San Francisco State University (tie).

The final top three intercollegiate winners will be announced in May.

WKU has won the Hearst Intercollegiate Multimedia Competition for seven straight years. Earlier this spring WKU won the Intercollegiate Photojournalism Competition for the 25th time in the past 30 years.

Often called “The Pulitzers of college journalism,” the Hearst Journalism Awards Program, in its 59th year, consists of five writing, two photojournalism, one radio, two television and four multimedia competitions offering up to $700,000 in scholarships, matching grants and stipends; 105 member universities of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication with accredited undergraduate journalism programs are eligible to participate in the Hearst competitions.

The points earned by individual students in the monthly writing, photojournalism, radio, television and multimedia competitions determine each discipline’s Intercollegiate ranking. The winners are those schools with the highest accumulated student points in each category. The overall Intercollegiate winners are the schools with the highest accumulated student points in the writing, photojournalism, broadcast and multimedia competitions.

In 2018, WKU won its fourth overall national championship in the Hearst Journalism Awards Program. WKU won overall titles in 2000, 2001 and 2005 and has finished in the top three overall for nine straight years and in the top eight nationally for 25 straight years.

WKU students have won 15 Hearst individual national championships since 1985 — photojournalism in 1987, 1988, 1991, 1992, 1996, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2014 and 2016; multimedia in 2015; writing in 1985; and radio news in 2006.

  • Mason Mount hattrick, Coventry win 5-4 at Stadium of Light

Ipswich Town’s season of misery reached its culmination as their relegation was confirmed in a 1-1 draw with Birmingham at Portman Road. Lukas Jutkiewicz converted from close range in the seventh minute and a second-half leveller from Gwion Edwards was not enough for Paul Lambert’s side, who needed a win to stave off the prospect of third-tier football for the first time since 1957.

What the War on Mexico Taught Grant      Comment   Translate Page

From Grant, by Ron Chernow (Penguin, 2018), Kindle pp. 49-51:
THE MEXICAN WAR did more than just educate Grant in strategy and tactics, it also tutored him in the manifold ways wars are shot through with political calculations. “The Mexican war was a political war,” he would observe, “and the administration conducting it desired to make party capital out of it.” Monterrey’s fall made Zachary Taylor the darling of the Whig press. When this was followed by Whig victories in the November elections, giving the opposition party control of both houses of Congress, President Polk grew leery of Taylor as a Whig rival for president. In a Machiavellian maneuver, he decided to divest Taylor of most of his troops and replace him with Winfield Scott, a Whig lacking Taylor’s brand of popular charisma.

In high-handed fashion, Polk dispatched Scott to Texas without notifying Taylor of what was afoot. When Scott arrived in Point Isabel after Christmas, he informed Taylor by letter that he had taken over the Army of Invasion and was radically revamping the war strategy. ...

Grant was with Taylor when he received the shocking news of his demotion and never forgot his hero’s befuddled reaction. ... This early experience made Grant tend to view war as a hard-luck saga of talented, professional soldiers betrayed by political opportunists plotting back in Washington.

Between the founding era of the Republic and the Civil War, no figure embodied the American military more splendidly than Winfield Scott, who was promoted to brevet major general by the War of 1812. Straddling two eras, he would serve under presidents as far apart as James Madison and Abraham Lincoln. Mocked as “Old Fuss and Feathers” behind his back, he had never seen a parade ground he didn’t long to tread or a uniform he didn’t wish to wear. With his enormous height, wavy hair, and ample flesh, he loved to flash medals, flaunt plumed hats, and preen before mirrors, a vanity that made him susceptible to flattery. Grant noted how Scott sent word ahead to commanders of the precise hour he planned to arrive. “This was done so that all the army might be under arms to salute their chief as he passed. On these occasions he wore his dress uniform, cocked hat, aiguilletes, sabre and spurs.” Such vainglory was so alien to Grant that it is sometimes hard to say whether he modeled himself after Zachary Taylor or in opposition to Winfield Scott.

For all that, Grant credited Scott with a brilliantly resourceful mind and strategic daring. To travel from Veracruz to the capital, an army of twelve thousand would quit a secure supply base, traverse 250 miles of mountainous terrain, then face a much larger and well-fortified enemy in a populous capital. To do this, Scott assembled a first-rate team of bright junior officers, including Pierre G. T. Beauregard and George B. McClellan and a rising star on the engineering staff, Robert E. Lee. Throw in a host of other officers who later reappeared in the Civil War—Joseph Johnston, John Pemberton, James Longstreet, Winfield Scott Hancock, Albert Sidney Johnston, Joseph Hooker, George Thomas, Braxton Bragg, and George Gordon Meade—and the Mexican War seemed a dress rehearsal for the later conflict. With a retentive memory for faces and events, Grant accumulated a detailed inventory of knowledge about these varied men that he drew on later.

Comment on IBOGAINE: THE “ADDICTION CURE” BIG PHARMA’S DON’T WANT YOU TO HAVE by nicholas       Comment   Translate Page
The US government lies about EVERYTHING . From Jefferson's Articles of the Confederacy to Lincoln actually wanting to free the slaves . Lets also not forget our own "LEBENSRAUM" in German , living space . This was Hitler's plan to gain more land in the East for his own people. At least Hitler did not LIE . If you read Mein Kampf and followed his early political career you knew what he was going to do. The US lies constantly. The Native Americans were effectively wiped out , more than what Hitler did to the Jews in Europe . They were demonized in the press , put in concentration camps , raped and murdered .Now the ones left live in abject poverty . A US Senator's median net worth is 3.2 million . What is your net worth minus your mortgage and other bills? You are 3 paychecks away from eating out of a dumpster . Why do you think there has been little trouble in Afghanistan ? Because there are US troops guarding warlords poppy plants from the Taliban . The amount of Heroin has increased 80-90% and purity levels have reached the same levels. They want your children hooked on dope . Because they make billions and billions for your child to stop . Can't you see it ? No you can't . You are too busy pushing buttons on your cell phone or cheating on your spouse . There is no such thing as an American race except Native Americans . We are all slaves . The government and Big Pharma have a plan for population control . It is already starting. Open your eyes , HIV , TB , measles , introducing drugs like Prep so people do not use condoms and therefore spread more disease . Remember this word : QUARANTINE . That is going to be the US government's euphemism for extermination , just like resettlement in Nazi Germany . In 1858 Lincoln did not want blacks to vote , sit on juries , inter-marry , join the military , etc. He wanted to send the blacks to Central America or Madagascar . As late as 4/11/1865 at a dinner with free blacks he argued for limited black suffrage . Does this sound like a man who wanted to free the slaves ? The civil war was about money and power . Honest , lying Abe wanted money from the tobacco and cotton the South was selling to Europe . He also wanted more power vested in the federal government . But the South said NO ! Read The Articles of The Confederacy that gives very limited power to the federal government and it's Gestapo . Duh . That is why they were called The Confederates . There should be a memorial to John Wilkes Booth rather than Hitler , oops I meant Lincoln who practically suspended The Bill of Rights . Even a congressman's net worth is $900,000 . Are you worth anything near that minus your bills.? If OPEC ever stopped accepting the US dollar as their only currency for payment , there will be such a crash in The US economy it will make The Depression seem like a minor recession. Now I am severely disabled so I sit in many doctor's office's. Crooks , lackey's all. I see Big Pharma's salesmen with their cheap suits and over-sized briefcases glad handing it with the doctor's. Suboxone is poison. You cannot quit . Methadone is poison . You cannot quit . Rehab centers do now work. Look at their total recovery % . It's very low . You are talking about hundreds of billions of dollars that just get funneled into Big Pharma's and our politicians pockets . If Ibogaine were legal there goes their hundreds of billions. It has less of a chance of being made legal by the FDA than I have of becoming a billionaire . The only reason why the government wants to make recreational marijuana legal is because they will tax it to death and laugh all the way to the bank. If you add up every tax you pay in NYC , sales tax , income tax , local , state and federal , gas tax , etc . you are paying over 60% of your salary in taxes . Has anything I have written being taught in schools ? Are you kidding . The government wants your children . They want boys to be girls and girls to be boys . Imagine girls playing football or hockey with men . It's hormones government . Men have testosterone and women have estrogen. That is why women are kinder , more gentle and nurturing . And men more violent , larger in body mass and more aggressive . Now there are 3 kinds of lies , lies , damn lies and statistics . Now in NYS our benevolent governor has increased the minimum wage to over $15.00 . Now I have heard literally dozens of stories and I can't really go out of people being laid off and other workers now doing 2 , 3 and 4 jobs because of all the layoffs . C'mon now , does a guy flipping burgers at a fast food joint deserve $30,000+ a year when teachers make about that . But our government will come out with it's own lies , oops I meant statistics saying everything is rosy while NY unemployment level is actually reaching depression levels. Reb above writes that Glaxo is being given $300 MILLION to develop more controlling drugs that will be harder to kick . I have had one hip replaced , one hip re-surfaced , my right shoulder has 2 cysts , a total tear , like ripped in 1/2 rotator cuff , and is unusable. My left shoulder and right knee are in similar condition and my left knee has a torn meniscus . I have had 3 major operations over the last 10-12 years and therefore got hooked on opiates . I did not like it and didn't want methadone so I figured suboxone was the best bet . Boy was I wrong . I take 3,200 mg. of Ibuprofen a day because doctor's hide under their desks at the mention of opiates . My primary doctor wanted me to take Mobic that besides having tons of side effects has a serious contradiction with a medication I already take. When they test your urine , you do not know about cross contamination or chain of evidence or are they lying to get you into to some program that you don't need . Even writing this I am afraid of The Gestapo and their willing accomplices The Totenkopfverbande . Look it up. I live in a state of terror , constant fear and anxiety because I know we live in a dictatorship . If you do not have a ton of money you are a total slave . That's it in a nutshell. In my capacity in my job I worked for The NYS Attorney General's office per diem , too bad . An assistant AG who I was assigned to called me and I quote the most honest man he has ever met . Writing this scares the hell out of me. And why ? Because I am telling the truth . And The Gestapo is all knowing and all seeing and there is a reason why per capita The US has the largest prison population in the world , So be afraid , be very AFRAID !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comment on Vintage Snapshots: Chicago Auto Show 1966 – Here’s an Auto Show I’d Like To Have Attended by nrd515       Comment   Translate Page
I don't know where my dad and his 2 brothers saw the Toranado, but it probably was at the Chicago show when it was first shown. They ordered 3 of them, my uncle's cars were gold (About the only gold cars I ever liked) and my dad's was probably "Laurel Mist" according to a chart I found. Dad admitted after he had it a while, he screwed up and should have gotten something else, color wise. I remember seeing a Target Red one not long after he got it and saying to him, "That's what you should have got!". He wasn't a "red car kind of guy", as he put it, and after the Toro came some truly awful colored cars, like his '68 Bronze with a black vinyl top Imperial, followed in 69 by the awful Avacado green Lincoln MkIII that was traded to my uncle for his '69 Cadillac Sedan De Ville in almost the same awful green. I, on the other hand AM a "red car kind of guy", and i've have had 6 red cars of various shades, and one orange one. I never get tired of, or regret buying red, even though I was looking to go Yellow Jacket on this one.

We have neither.

Comment on April 2019 update on NextGen Bus Study: a look at service concepts by Pat       Comment   Translate Page
Yeah, I've occasionally ridden the portion of lines 108 and 110 on the westside, between Lincoln Blvd and Culver City, and they're almost empty. If the Culver City Bus can get people to the same place for a lower price, Metro can't compete. What's often confused me is the gap in the bus network between Playa Vista and Playa Del Rey, where lines 110 and 115 each have endpoints, with nothing between the two. Although I doubt that connecting such a small stretch would get you any significant ridership, it at least gives riders more options. If there are other small gaps like this, it might be worth looking into. The cost and added time for covering such distances wouldn't be huge.

"As you all

Getaway: ‘Sophisticated, brilliant and majestic’ penthouse soars above Bellevue      Comment   Translate Page

Sumptuous, grand and indulgent merely begin the list of superlatives that apply to a grand penthouse towering above a luxury hotel in downtown Bellevue, Wash.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own something refined, sophisticated, brilliant and majestic,” said Tere Foster of Compass, who is co-listing 650 Bellevue Way Northeast, Unit 4102, with Moya Skillman for $7.49 million.

Found on the 41st floor of 1 Lincoln Tower, the twostory penthouse boasts an open floor plan, floor-to-ceiling windows and a refined material palette that blends stone, hardwood, glass and steel. The residence enjoys a wine room, a cinema and office and multiple rooms open to balconies overlooking the city.

Directly across the street from the Bellevue Arts Museum, the building is a work of art in its own right. Stone, stucco, glass, concrete and steel fashion a luxurious tower that stands hundreds of feet above downtown Bellevue.

Set atop the 303-room Westin Hotel in downtown Bellevue, residents of 1 Lincoln Tower enjoy access to all the hotel’s amenities, like a fitness center and 24-hour concierge. There’s also a communal roof deck, media room, homeowner’s lounge, spa and secure parking.

East of Seattle, across Lake Washington, Bellevue is the third-largest city in the Seattle metropolitan area, and has seen a population explosion during the last decade. Bellevue is home to the headquarters of T-Mobile and Expedia, as well as satellite offices for companies like Salesforce, Google, Microsoft and Oracle.

First impressions matter, and Unit 4102 delivers a jawdropping introduction by opening to a voluminous great room with a soaring ceiling, art glass chandelier and wall of windows. Masonry surrounds the living area’s gas fireplace as a concrete bench provides a spot to sit...

“I swear by everything I ever owned that my adventure will be the honest truth—even if I had to tell a few lies along the way to get to the meaning of that truth.” So promises Tick Cooper, a twelve year old Ohio boy who’s about to accompany his Uncle Ned down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers to New Orleans. It’s the autumn of 1860, right before the election that will send Abraham Lincoln to the White House. With his mother deceased and his father having deserted him for the chance of gold in California, Tick has been most fortunate to receive the care and love of his father’s older brother and his wife—Aunt Clara. Although she has recently passed away, she and Uncle Ned have educated the boy about living a good and proper life. But Tick hasn’t had much of a chance to put what he’s learned into practice—nor to face the moral challenges every young person will face as he or she grows up. But the river journey will provide plenty of those experiences and tests of character. Yet, reaching New Orleans does not conclude the lessons and challenges, for there Tick witnesses a slave auction, and on the block is a thirteen-year-old freed black girl named Clarissa, whom Tick had briefly met in Ohio. Now Tick faces his most significant challenge. Can he help get Clarissa back to Ohio all the way from New Orleans?

EXCERPT

There I was jumping from the top of one tree to another. It wasn’t exactly as if I was flying, because I had to land on the top branch of each tree, but it sure felt like flying. Geese were following me and honking away like they were trying to warn me about something. But when I decided to forget about the tree tops and just fly, I fell hard to the ground thirty feet below and started rolling down the side of a hill while I was hiding my face in a pillow. I kept feeling the feathers from the goose down pillow sticking out and poking my cheeks and the side of my neck. Try as I might, I couldn’t pull that pillow off my face and it got to be stained with the blood coming out of me. But I kept rolling and rolling until I was stopped by something firm but soft. But by the time I finally pulled the pillow away from my face to see what or who had stopped me, I woke up and I never found out. That happens to me in dreams a lot. Wish it didn’t, though. What woke me up was my Uncle Ned telling me it was time to leave our house and get on the train to Cincinnati where we would get aboard the steamboat the St. Paul and head down to New Orleans. I was about to leave on the greatest adventure of my life. I swear by everything I ever owned that it will be the honest truth—even if I had to tell a few lies along the way to get to the meaning of that truth. Uncle Ned shouted from the front porch of our house in Oxford, Ohio, “Time to catch the train, Tick.” That’s my name—Tick—Tick Cooper. Or what they’ve always called me anyways. Uncle Ned said I’d always remember this day as long as I lived, but I still wrote it down when we got on the train in Hamilton so I’d be sure never to forget— “November the 1st, 1860.” We would ride some thirty-five miles to Cincinnati, the 2 largest city in the whole state. I’d a been on the train only once before—when the railway first opened, when I was six. But what gets a boy excited when he’s six and what gets him excited at twelve are quite different things—so this time I acted all grown up like I’d ridden the railroad every week. I didn’t jump around and bother Uncle Ned the way I did the first time. Even so, it was still pretty special chugging along in such high style. Nothing much happened on the train for the first twenty miles or so, but two more passengers got on and right afterward I heard some commotion going on in front of where we were sitting. “I say that’s my seat you’re sitting in. Get out of it now.” The man who said that was an elderly gent who looked like he had gotten into many tough scrapes in his life. He had long white hair and side whiskers, but what I grabbed my attention most was his scarred-up face. It looked like someone had dug trenches on his cheeks and above his right eye. And he seemed much bigger and stronger than men as old as he was. He was talking to a boy who looked younger than me—maybe nine or ten. The boy was in the seat by himself and was just too scared to say anything back. “You had better come up with a good reason why you took my seat or I’ll rip your nose right off your face, boy.” Because Uncle Ned had fallen asleep, it was up to me to do something. I just had to be sure that boy kept his nose on where it was, so I ran up to the man. “Excuse me, mister. My brother here is in the wrong seat. Come on, Ben. Your seat is back with us.” That boy almost flew out of the seat and headed to the back of the train car. “Excuse my brother, mister. He doesn’t hear well and sometimes I have to tell him things twice.” I turned and walked back to my seat, expecting that that white-haired old devil would 3 grab me and try to take my nose off. But he didn’t say or do anything. He just grunted and sat in the seat I guess he always sat in when he rode on that train. I found out that Ben’s real name was Peter Butler and that he was put on the train by his grandpap so he could take a steamboat from Cincinnati to Pittsburgh, where his mother, father, and baby sister had just settled in a house. I told him I’d look out for him until we reached Cincinnati, where his grandpap’s brother lived and would take him in for the night. We talked about the man with the scars on his face—I mean we talked softly so we wouldn’t wake Uncle Ned or let that old buzzard hear us. I told Peter that some folks believe they really own whatever they use often—cups, chairs, and such--and that it’s easy for someone big to get what they want from someone smaller, who can’t do anything about it. And if that big someone is also real ugly, it’s all the easier. When I told Peter my name, he wanted to know if I was born with it. I told him that when I was born my father named me John Polk Cooper, but those first two names never really suited me much. It was Aunt Clara who first called me “Tick” because when I was a baby I used to burrow into the blanket like a tick into a dog’s back. But the name really stuck when I started running around and hiding in bushes, old dead trees, and holes in the ground. I also like the sound of Tick Cooper better than John Cooper or John Polk Cooper any day of the week. One of my teachers said that Tick Cooper wasn’t as easy to pronounce as John or John Polk Cooper, because the first name ended with a “k” sound and the second name began with the same sound. But she was educated and I guess those things matter to those kinds of folks. Ben said that Polk was a funny name to be stuck with—and it was, but from what Uncle Ned told me I got my middle name because of the then president of the United States, James Polk, who they say kicked the Mexicans out of Texas and took it for the 4 United States. Uncle Ned said that my father thought Polk did the right thing, but from what Uncle Ned also told me, my father once shot a man in the leg who claimed that the twelve feet at the very back of my father’s land rightfully belonged to him. They say the man showed my father the papers, but my father shot him anyways, saying that it was the law that those who live on the land and cultivate it have all right to it. I guess old President Polk never heard of that law when he took Texas. So since I was born on March 3, 1848, I got stuck with a Polk between my first and last names. If I was born three years ago my name would have been John Buchanan Cooper, which was wore then the name I had. As Aunt Clara used to say, “Thank heaven for small favors.” When the train stopped in Cincinnati, we waited until the foul-looking man left the train car before we did. Uncle Ned woke up and finally met Peter, who thanked me for helping him and waited until he saw his grandpap’s brother before getting off the train. I wished he was going to New Orleans instead of Pittsburgh, because I knew I’d never see him again, but my Aunt Clara used to say that the older you get the more often folks would come in and then out of your life—sometimes on the very same day. Aunt Clara. I guess I forgot to say that she was Uncle Ned’s wife and was always like a mother to me, since my own mother died when I wasn’t yet two years old. I’m still very sad that Aunt Clara got real sick and died a few months back. The day before we left Oxford, we went to see her grave at the Old Yard Cemetery. Uncle Ned had been going there every week since she died, but he never made me go with him. I just did it on my own every few weeks or so, but it was more to be with Uncle Ned because I really wanted to go. Not that I’m afraid to visit the graves of all those dead people. I’ve been there after the sun went down with three of my friends and was the very last to run out of there, which won me the wool cap we found snagged on a tree limb the day before. 5 Anyway--at her grave, Uncle Ned told Aunt Clara that he’d be going away for a spell and he’d be thinking of her all the time. He also told her that he’d be taking me with him. She was so good to me—she really was. As soon as we got off the train, we heard a noise on the wooden platform—a kind of “ker-thump” every several second or so, so we looked around and saw a man who looked like he hadn’t shaved his whiskers in a hundred years limping along with a wooden crutch under his arm, which he dragged as he took a step with his good leg. Good leg? I should have said only leg! Uncle Ned reached in his pocket for a coin or two, which he liked to do whenever he saw someone who couldn’t walk or see too well. So I reached in mine and pulled out one of my two new Indian head pennies. My other one was back in my room at home, but I always carried one of them with me for good luck. But when I looked at the coin, I wanted to think that Uncle Ned’s contribution would be enough that the one-legged old soul wouldn’t hold it against me if I jammed my lucky coin back in my pocket. I sure didn’t want to be without luck on my grand adventure to New Orleans. But I didn’t think or act fast enough because the next thing I knew I had put my Indian head penny in the man’s hand. He closed his old fist around it, and I felt like I dropped my hunting rifle down a well. My stomach became as heavy as a cannon ball, and my throat felt as dry as if I had swallowed a campfire. Being charitable isn’t always “its own reward,” as Aunt Clara used to say. The poor man had only limped about ten feet away when two men in fancy clothes, with new top hats and walking sticks came up behind him and started laughing and pointing at his crutch. I guess these were men because they were dressed in all high fancy, but they acted like boys not much older than me. The one in the striped pants took his walking stick and swung it like he was chopping at a low limb and knocked the 6 crutch out from under the old man, who fell to the platform before I could take get close enough to break his fall. Those two dandified gents both burst out laughing as the old man let out one of them painful old man’s screeches, with a whistling sound—probably because he lacked some front teeth. The coins he had gotten from me, Uncle Ned, and some other kindly folks were scattered all over the platform. And then you know what those two popinjays did? They threw down several coins themselves! I couldn’t believe it. I guess they paid for the right to hurt the old man. Or maybe they did it to make sure their consciences wouldn’t bother them none. Uncle Ned told me once that some folks believe they can make up for their being cruel and thoughtless by giving money. And these two gents were nothing compared to what I’d see later on my adventure. But I’m running ahead of myself. When I went over to help up the old man, I saw my Indian head penny about six feet away, picking up the bright sunshine, which made it sparkle. When I got the crutch situated under the old man’s arm, I walked over and picked up the coin. I was afraid someone else would take it and use it to buy something useless. No. Now wait. That’s not all of it. I better come clean or this tale isn’t going to be worth you’re taking the time to read it if I don’t. To tell the honest truth, I picked up the coin mostly because I wanted to think more about his need for it, since four other folks gave the old man more money. I picked up my coin as the lame old man was walking away with the rest of the money that someone had picked up from the platform, along with the new coins just placed in his hand. I knew he wouldn’t miss my Indian head penny—not one bit--and seeing that it and the other penny back home were gifts from my Uncle Ned, I decided to put the penny back in my pocket. For about a second. I caught up with the old man and gave him my good-luck penny for a second time. Maybe I was wrong, but I just felt he needed the good luck 7 much more than I did. Then I heard Uncle Ned calling me, and that was the last I saw of my penny and the old man. But not the last I’d see of those two high-hatted, dandypants scoundrels who knocked the old man down.

March 9 found Bihar’s health minister Mangal Pandey at a national conference on a ‘Partnership to Scale up Mental Healthcare in Bihar’, so perhaps it was protocol that the Bharatiya Janata Party politician share some thoughts.

“Take, for instance, a politically conscious man. He feels Pakistan is doing India wrong. Our PM’s action, he feels, could have been different. He doesn’t think he is in an office, that his work isn’t getting done, and that the PM’s work is not his. Even that man is mentally ill.” Shot with a smartphone, the video is grainy, but you can hear people giggle. Pandey got what all speakers often want—a laugh. The joke, though, was on him.

Pandey did make some right noises in his speech—he said Bihar needed to develop a policy for mental health that was separate from the Centre’s—but he forgot to tell us what happens if his politically aware idler did not have an office to work in. What if he was one of the many lakhs of Indians who are unemployed? Disillusioned, without any job to hold, are they going to be branded mentally ill as well?

If looked at dispassionately, however, Pandey has done us a favour. He has shown us that Pulwama and Balakot can make us ill. If the health minister’s equivalence is to be taken at face value, our mental afflictions are not just a result of biology. We are social beings, but also political creatures. Current affairs affect us, and at no point is that impact more profound than when a general election kicks off.

Pandey has also given us a clear choice—we can either question the government or be branded mentally ill. Holding the government accountable has perhaps never done anyone’s mental health any good, but American writer and activist Susan Sontag did have a pithy lesson to teach wannabe dissenters. She had once said, “Sanity is a cosy life.” In her life Sontag abjured cosiness. Though this piece ostensibly tries to map the points where our mental health and our nation’s politics awkwardly intersect, it also argues that in these times, it may be best if we give up on some of our ‘cosiness’ too.

COLLECTIVE ANXIETY

On March 27, 2017, prime minister Narendra Modi was gentle in his Mann Ki Baat address.

“Depression,” he said, “is not incurable. There is a need to create a psychologically conducive environment to begin with.” The PM was right. Compared to other mental illnesses, depression has been considered more treatable. But by asserting it was one’s family and friends who had the responsibility of creating a firm and secure environment, Modi deftly let himself off the hook.

According to a report by Amnesty India, India has allegedly witnessed 721 incidents of hate crime since September 2015. Because a majority of these were against Dalits and Muslims, it would be safe to assume that these social groups suffer an anxiety, perhaps even a depression, that is greater than those more privileged. The rhetoric of UP CM Yogi Adityanath makes clear that Modi lets that pot stir.

An October 2018 survey—Stress in America—found that 62 percent of Americans feel the current political climate of their country is a significant source of stress. According to mental health practitioners, this stress has now escalated into a “collective anxiety.” Donald Trump, it is clear, has not unified his country. India has a similar problem. For that “conducive environment” he prescribes, Modi must know that mental turmoil cuts across party lines. He leads the nation, and the mental health of his detractors is also his business.

THE MENTAL ILLNESS BARB

Narendra Modi, it must be said, uses learning disorders to mock his opponents, not mental illness. At IIT Kharagpur this March, Modi interjected a student who wanted advice on a project that would help dyslexic children be creative. He asked if such research could help “children” in the age group of 40-50. Only dyslexic individuals and Rahul Gandhi would perhaps find this veiled jibe offensive, but the Congress chief ought to have been unaffected. He’s used to far worse.

Though politicians only ever insult the mental wellbeing of their colleagues, the electorate can—and should— assess the mental health of those they elect to power.

In August 2017, BJP leader Uma Bharti was so concerned about Gandhi’s mental wellbeing, she said she’d “pray to God to grant him wisdom”. Earlier this year, the BJP and its supporters put their weight behind a tongue-in-cheek hashtag—#GetWellSoonRahul. A week after it had begun trending, the party used its official handle to tweet a definition of Multiple Personality Disorder. This time the “get-well-soon-Rahul” had more punch. In January, Subramanian Swamy said Priyanka Gandhi was bipolar.

Even though the Gandhi siblings seem to have been singled out for the mental illness barb, it has been frequently employed in Indian politics. Samajwadi chief Akhilesh Yadav, for instance, said recently that the BJP itself was “schizophrenic”. For its part, the Indian Psychiatry Society (IPC) has written to the Election Commission (EC) last week. It hopes the EC will caution politicians who are reinstating mental health stigma and trivialising suffering. All of 13.7% of Indians are mentally ill. Despite their turmoil, this sizeable demographic is still guaranteed voting rights. It is arguably entitled to more consideration.

A POLITICIAN’S MENTAL HEALTH

Though politicians only ever insult the mental wellbeing of their colleagues, the electorate can—and should— assess the mental health of those they elect to power. In his article, ’The Mental Health of Politicians’, British psychologist and professor Andrew Weinberg writes, “Perhaps it does not help that as citizens we can be sceptical of the role of our politicians in making important decisions that shape the world in which we live, yet if we turn away from scrutinising their behaviour we risk compounding the issue and compromising our own well-being too.” Weinberg works with the simple assumption that politicians are human and can be fallible.

Political office, Weinberg argues, is also a workplace, and the psychological support we give our employees, must also be made available to, say, the members of the BJP, the Congress and all other parties. Parliamentarians, in particular, also have their constituents to think about, and some MPs are inevitably tasked with governance. Unlike sport, politicians do not receive special training for public life. The stress they suffer is immense. They need to be mindful of their limits. The PM, for instance, has said he hasn’t taken a day’s holiday in his tenure. He sleeps for four hours. This ideal he has invented is impossible, and for his voters and colleagues, this is a dangerous and unhealthy precedent.

Given his alacrity, one can’t accuse Modi of neglecting strain, but leaders before him have shown that it is possible to govern even while struggling with mental illnesses. Diagnosed retrospectively, Abraham Lincoln is believed to have fought clinical depression all his life. Thought to be bipolar by some, and a depressive by others, Winston Churchill once confessed to his doctor, “I sat in the House of Commons, but black depression settled on me.” Norwegian PM Kjell Magne Bondevik announced that he was suffering from a depressive episode in 1998. He stepped down, and waited for three weeks to resume office. Then in 2001, he was again elected PM. Bondevik’s candour is said to have bolstered mental health awareness in Norway. In India, sadly, mental illness remains the monopoly of the weak.

TRIGGER WARNING

In July 2017, IndiaSpend concluded that between January 1, 2017, and July 5, 2018, 33 persons were killed as a result of mob violence and at least 99 injured in 69 reported cases. National Crime Records Bureau figures from 2016 show that of the 106 daily rapes in India, four out of ten victims are minors. In Uttar Pradesh, 44 people were killed as a result of 450 communal incidents in 2017. The apathy of politicians can be triggers, but these numbers can have a more adverse impact. Twitter did laugh about our GDP, but most figures in these past five years have not afforded humour.

If Twitter, however, was a barometer of social cohesion, it’s clear that ours is a society irreparably divided. Trolling, which was once primarily some clever jibing, is now treacherous. At the height of the #MeToo movement, trolls targeted women who had already been harassed. Their tweets were mostly misogynistic. Given a free pass this election, trolls have even taken their bullying offline. Not just was journalist Barkha Dutt assailed with nearly a thousand texts and calls, she was also sent ‘dick pics’. Such bullying is known to cause depression in teenagers. Adult trauma is usually one’s own to process.

According to a study conducted by a group of Canadian researchers, trolls are generally psychopathic and sadistic individuals. This diagnosis, though, is little solace. It doesn’t offer an escape. Deleting your social media accounts is perhaps an option, but that means giving up on a ready, sometimes essential, source of news and information. Besides, it’s often only avenues like Facebook and Twitter that gives those on the margins their voice. You’d do well to tune in. There may be only one way left for you to safeguard yourself. The self-preservation manual dictates—when the going gets weird, just walk away.

BE STOIC

The Stoic philosopher Seneca lived above a Roman bathhouse. When “assailed by a cacophony of noises”, Seneca uses every trick in the Stoic handbook—he forces his mind to pay attention to itself, he stems the turmoil inside, etc. Someone comes along and asks why he won’t move. Seneca hadn’t thought of that. He promptly decides to pack his bags. The point of the story is not that you should leave the country. It simply insists that you take practical measures. We often forget that doing something to change our mood—reading a book, watching a film, taking a walk—is easier than changing the nation. We also forget that the nation, like moods, will always need changing.

Yet another Stoic philosopher, the Greek Epictetus, had once said, “People are disturbed not by things, but by the views they take of things.” Though this offers little consolation to those directly impacted by political high-handedness and cyber-bullying, it is perhaps important to remember that this quote was a primary inspiration behind the inception of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Now used by a majority of therapists the world over, CBT insists that your health matters more than the world outside, or to put it simply—the internal matters more than the external. The impact of political discourse on your health can’t be undermined, but at times only humour and detachment offer relief.

Of all the pictures taken in New York on 9/11, Thomas Hoepker’s was perhaps the most controversial. Sitting across the river from Lower Manhattan, a group of New Yorkers sit chatting casually. They could just be sunbathing. Smoke and dust, however, fill the sky. They do know something terrible has happened, but apparently, they are unmoved. Hoepker waited for five years before he published this photograph. Expectedly, it was met with anger, and Hoepker’s subjects were accused of being callous. These accusations might well be true, but rather than exacerbate it, the photograph may also force us to economise our outrage. Frenzy, it shows, is never the only option, and May 23 is thankfully no 9/11.

BTP Luncurkan Video Alasan Pilih PDIP      Comment   Translate Page

Ujian Kekuasaan

Soal partai baru, BTP lebih jauh mengutip ucapan Presiden ke-16 AS Abraham Lincoln yakni, "Kalau mau uji karakter seseorang, kasih dia kekuasaan."

"Beliau (Megawati) ingin suatu perubahan.

http://jumpingjackflashhypothesis.blogspot.com/2012/02/jumping-jack-flash-hypothesis-its-gas.html

The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

Address: N 44th St Lincoln, NE, 68504, USA

What is the purpose of the "No Right Turn Light" when a train is crossing 44th Street?? This could turn into a dangerous situation because if you cannot turn right on red then you get stacked up in the turn lane and the third or fourth car gets trapped in the right thru lane with 45 MPH traffic approaching from behind. I see no need for this light since while a train is crossing, west bound traffic does not get a left turn signal and south bound 44th traffic does not get a green light to proceed through the intersection.

'I Knew His Goodness of Heart'      Comment   Translate Page
On April 9, 1865, the Army of Northern Virginia surrendered in the village of Appomattox Court House, Va., ending four years of civil war. In his Personal Memoirs (1885), Ulysses Grant writes:

“I had known General Lee in the old army, and had served with him in the Mexican War; but did not suppose, owing to the difference in our age and rank, that he would remember me, while I would more naturally remember him distinctly, because he was the chief of staff of General Scott in the Mexican War.”

It’s typical of Grant to minimize his importance and the impression he has made on others. If not exactly humility, this quality might be thought of as laconic American frontier pragmatism. Grant had a job to do (win a war, write a book), and bragging about it would only get in the way. Roughhewn, not know for elegant manners, he was an American gentleman:

“What General Lee’s feelings were I do not know. As he was a man of much dignity, with an impassible face, it was impossible to say whether he felt inwardly glad that the end had finally come, or felt sad over the result, and was too manly to show it. Whatever his feelings, they were entirely concealed from my observation; but my own feelings, which had been quite jubilant on the receipt of his letter, were sad and depressed. I felt like anything rather than rejoicing at the downfall of a foe who had fought so long and valiantly, and had suffered so much for a cause, though that cause was, I believe, one of the worst for which a people ever fought, and one for which there was the least excuse. I do not question, however, the sincerity of the great mass of those who were opposed to us.”

Grant’s respectful, conciliatory words recall the greatest of Civil War poems, Melville’s “Lee in the Capitol (April, 1866).” In the prose “Supplement” appended to Battle-Pieces and Aspects of the War (1866), in which the poem was published, Melville urged the Radical Republicans to practice “prudence, not unaligned with entire magnanimity,” and wrote: “Benevolence and policy—Christianity and Machiavelli—dissuade from penal severities toward the subdued . . .”

Grant was not a gifted politician, as his presidency (1869-77) proved. He was among the most adept of our generals and writers. After the surrender, Grant returns to the capital:

“While in Washington I was very busy for a time in preparing the necessary orders for the new state of affairs; communicating with my different commanders of separate departments, bodies of troops, etc. But by the 14th I was pretty well through with this work, so as to be able to visit my children, who were then in Burlington, New Jersey, attending school.”

On April 14, Lincoln invites Grant and his wife to accompany them to the theater that evening. Grant replies that they would like to do so but he is occupied with work and anxious to see his children. He learns of Lincoln’s assassination in Philadelphia:

“It would be impossible for me to describe the feeling that overcame me at the news of these assassinations, more especially the assassination of the President. I knew his goodness of heart, his generosity, his yielding disposition, his desire to have everybody happy, and above all his desire to see all the people of the United States enter again upon the full privileges of citizenship with equality among all.”

Grant reacts as a man and a citizen. He thinks not of vengeance but of the impact the murder may have on the country and its future:

“I knew also the feeling that Mr. Johnson had expressed in speeches and conversation against the Southern people, and I feared that his course towards them would be such as to repel, and make them unwilling citizens; and if they became such they would remain so for a long while. I felt that reconstruction had been set back, no telling how far.”

Up, up, up in the winding cobblestone hills of San Miguel de Allende there is a gem called Casa Vista del Pájaro. It’s a unique place reserved for working class writers and educators. ¿Quién quiere ir? Virginia Woolf wrote about needing a room of her own. For those of us with artistic maῆas y modos who grew up in large families con pocos recursos, we were lucky if we had a bed of our own. Can I get a witness? Still, la Woolf woman’s declaration of the need for physical and creative space rings true, so true, especially for writers/artists of color juggling teaching schedules and/or heavy workloads, and even more so for those who are todo esto and also parents. The struggle (inner and outer) to create is real.

Palabras abandonadas, hechiseras, borrachas, curanderas; lárganse!

How do we find the time to create when the places where we give so much of our time and labor don’t (usually) support us in fundamental or even minimal ways? Without structural support or creative opportunities we begin to doubt ourselves. Those thoughts creep in...

Maybe I stopped being a writer.

I’ve been an educator for over 20 years (mostly a lecturer). During this time, I have given tirelessly to educational institutions, and yet I have mostly had to nurture my own writing, even when that writing has been directly connected to my teaching. In the end, with or without institutional support, we do what we must and what we can muster because of the love for the creative word and our art.

Step one, keep my flowers alive.

Personally, I have an aversion to having to sell myself to get into particular writing circles or spaces. I’m already exhausted. The literary world is full of white heterosexual male privilege and this constantly pisses me off. No tengo tiempo ni ganas to apply and pay more and more fees to exclusive spaces and retreats or to get rejected.  Lo que quiero es escribir, and to do this I need space and time to connect with myself and my work. Necesito tiempo y espacio to silence some of the noise that surrounds me.  I need time to really listen to the Muse (whoever the hell she is), to my Duende (that reckless cabron), and to the stories/poems that are yearning to be born. At a reading a couple of years ago, I heard the great escritora Joy Harjo give the best definition for poetry I have ever heard.  “What is poetry?” She asked. Her simple response resonated with me: “Poetry is listening.”

We can listen anywhere, of course, because this is ultimately a state of mind, but it definitely helps to get away from the everyday and be immersed in Creative Time / Creative Space / Creative Mode to listen to our own poetry.

Enter Casa Vista del Pájaro.

Twice now, once in 2018 and more recently at the onset of 2019, I was invited and fortunate enough to visit Casa Vista del Pájaro.  During my visits, I did nothing but eat great food, drink strong coffee, walk, sleep, dream, and write. Although I did not write all day like an obsessed loca at the keyboard (like I imagined I would), I wrote every single day. More than anything, the space reconnected me to my writing projects and creative self, and the creative flow stayed with me long after leaving San Miguel.

Meet Alma Cervantes and her husband Ken Udas, who have been brainstorming and manifesting Casa Vista del Pájaro for the past couple of years.

Alma Cervantes and Ken Udas, 2018 at El Charco del Ingenio.

Amor, canoso y grumpy, I scored!

Casa Vista del Pájaro has three houses on the premises. There is the primary casa where Alma and her canoso dwell. The other two adjacent casitas (known as Las Casitas) are smaller, but they are equally charming and each has its private entrance. What's admirable is that Alma and Ken intentionally set out to share their space with people like me, jaded working class artists/educators who need a damn break and want / need a beautiful place to create sans mierda! Okay that may sound jaded because it’s in my words.

Here are Alma Cervantes’ own words, “In 2017 we moved from Australia to San Miguel de Allende. Ken and I agreed that sharing the beauty of San Miguel would further contribute to our own happiness. Long story short, we instructed our Real Estate agent to show us homes that had that extra space. We are educators, we wish to welcome dedicated people who fall under the umbrella of Education...As a past writer, I reach out to writers too. One of the greatest challenges I faced as a writer was finding and then protecting my writing time and space. I love the idea of helping to make creative time and space a tangible possibility for a diverse network of writers who are parents, sisters, brothers, educators, healers and artists. It is not uncommon that creative people usually live, survive, thrive on a budget. Renting in San Miguel de Allende is normally not affordable for working writers, educators, artists etc. It is important to us to make the Casitas financially accessible to educators and writers. We also recognize that the funds gathered will allow us to maintain and continue improving the comfort offered to guests each year.”

Alma Cervantes 2019

Alma Cervantes, who has maternal raίces and family in Guanajuato, humbly refers to herself as a “past writer” but I’d like to note that she is an EastLos literary veterana, who alongside other iconic Angelenos (such as Marisela Norte, Luis Alfaro, and Gloria Alvarez, to name just a few), helped foster and define the Chicana/o literary scene in the 1980’s, 1990’s, and beyond. I can’t stress how much of an inspiration authors like these were for those of us who had writer dreams or writer inklings in Los Angeles back in the day.  We rarely (or ever) saw ourselves mirrored in K-12 literature, college English classes, or in the "mainstream” literary scene, so hearing authors such as these read their work live in Los Angeles was food for the starving soul. It still is, but it was even more so then because we did not have the participation / representation in the literary arts that we do now. They made what seemed impossible tangible. "If they can tell/write/share their stories, maybe I can too.”

Here's one of Alma's timeless poems from the 1990's, published in the anthology Chicana Creativity & Criticism: New Frontiers in American Literature, edited by María Herrera-Sobek and Helena María Viramontes.

The Roots of Chicana Urban Planners

Mom took us on walks that moved straight
but turned into spirals.

Our footsteps were like the stitches she sewed,
guiding the tela north, west, south, east,
again and again.

We had to keep moving to new yet familiar
neighborhoods, but as time passed
the new ones felt the same as the old ones.

Her Heart, Gut, Mind united in clamor and motion of
the machine.
Determined were her hands that guided tela forward, always forward.
Her eyes saw more than stitches,
things I longed to see.

We continued to take walks, but the road kept turning 'round and
      'round no
matter how far we traveled.

“Our walks will change when we earn more money,” she
       reassured me,
but the spiral roads always turned against us.

She continued to push tela forward, always forward, carefully
        watching each stitch
take its place.

One day my spiral walks
Ended.

I kissed her goodbye and walked away.
Self guided by the discipline of her hands and
depth of her visions.

Today I cut through old material,
weave through rigid structures
prepare new patterns;
I am a Chicana urban planner.

What happens when a Chicana urban planner, powered by the lessons of her mother's hands and visions, migrates back to Mexico with her esposo and takes her planning to an international level? Well, you get Casa Vista del Pájaro.

Shared patio area outside Las Casitas:
Where you can write or eat or stare at the sky and daydream.

Let me tell you a bit about the Casitas, which are the two houses reserved for visiting writers. Keep in mind that these Casitas are newborns and that they will continue to develop as more people visit them. They are not designed as fancy resorts.  Also, depending on an individual’s health and mobility, there may be some challenges, as San Miguel de Allende is very hilly and walking the cobblestone streets requires good suela on your zapatos and a certain level of affinity and ability for movimiento.

Meet rugged cobblestone, a rocky type of foot acupuncture--es gratis!

Although there is asphalt and plenty of cement banquetas, there is also a good amount of rugged cobblestone. Uno tiene que pisar con awareness and even for someone like me who hikes pretty regularly, I found myself out of breath often and stopping under the shade of a tree or an awning to collect myself. If you’re sensitive to altitude, keep in mind that San Miguel Allende is 6,234 feet above sea level.  To give some perspective, Los Angeles is 285’ and the Bay Area is about 50’. The high altitude makes moving around in San Miguel a little harder on the lungs and body.

Regular hydration helps. Also, you don’t have to walk everywhere. There are very affordable taxis and they are ubiquitous, but an observation I made about San Miguel de Allende taxis is that they  tend to be “snug” in regards to leg space. If you don’t or can’t walk much and don’t mind small taxis, then adelante! You can also ask to sit in the front passenger seat, which usually has a lot more leg room. Se puede, but having a sense of some of these San Miguel de Allende realities and limitations may help in deciding if this is a place you’d like to plan a retreat to. You may also want to just bunker down in your casita and write, but the museums, boutiques, and mercados are very tempting.

The casita I stayed in was beautiful and well-equipped with everything I needed for a week-long stay. (The casitas are available for longer stays.) There’s a small kitchen with a mini-fridge, a propane gas stove top for cooking, a large sink, casuelas and cooking utensils, and a coffee maker (¿qué más quieren?)

There’s a living room / lounge area with a writing desk that can also serve as a kitchen table. This is where I sometimes wrote and where I sometimes ate my chilaquiles and huevos or whatever I bought from the women vendor in the downtown mercado. What do these women in the town plaza cook up and sell? Oh, nothing fancy, just fresh delicious nopales, fluffy arroz, frijoles, tamales, and divine blue corn tortillas and gorditas that will make you chew slowly as you conjure up love hiakus to a Colbalt Blue Corn Goddess.

Edible cosas from the downtown mercado. Why cook?

I also have a deep love for San Miguel de Allende donuts. They are not all the same, though. But I know an exceptional donut when I see/eat one. Estimadxs Amigxs, les presento a mi amor, Dona Naranja.

The Best Glazed Dona Ever

Inside the casita, there is an enchanting narrow tile staircase that you shouldn’t try to run up or slide down. I will not share if I tried either or both of these things; just don't do it.

Picture of stairs leading up to the bedroom and bathroom.
Small table and chair in this picture have been replaced with a writing desk and chair.

The living room is small but very Zen, with limited amount of things. Marie Kondo would approve. The stairs lead up to a bedroom where you can sink into one of those fancy foam mattresses and dream up your writer or teacher dreams. Or just dream. While there, I dreamed my favorite reoccurring dream—empty dark space, endless floating black matter with occasional flickers of glitter. When I dream nothing but darkness, I know I have entered true rest / true creative realm.

The bedroom has the essential: drawers, a place to hang clothes (if you’re into that kinda thing), extra blankets por si hace frίo, un espejo to admire your badass self, and a small ropero that can serve as a second desk. It did for me.

My ropero-desk

There is a lovely window that opens up into poetic pieces of San Miguel sky and the bustling city down below. Bird’s eye view. Vista del Pájaro from a window. I don't have a picture of the view, but here's the dreamy window. Those side ladders on the wall should not be climbed. They are not for humans. They are for your Duende to climb up to the roof if he or she is restless and needs moonlight inspiration.

Large Ventana / Small Balcony in Bedroom

About the bustling city down below: For the most part the bustle está retirado, but you can hear carros when they drive near and past the street, which is one of the oldest carreteras in town and leads out to the neighboring state of Querétaro. Also audible at times are the downtown church bells, which are quite sensational. They don’t ring often on most days. On Sundays, however, they ring every fifteen minutes. Yes, you read that right. Every. Ring. Fifteen. Ring. Minutes. Ring.

In Part Two, Cohen observes the nuts-and-bolts of modern documentary filmmaking, the goals of CMP and the state of the film atmosphere in Chicago.

Brooks Brothers is considered to be the oldest menswear store in the US, having been founded in 1818 by Henry Sands Brooks. The original store was the H. & D.H. Brooks & Co., and it was located in New York City. In 1850, Brooks’ grandsons inherited the business, and they renamed it Brooks Brothers. From the beginning, Brooks Brothers was a ready-to-wear store, and they were the first store in the US to offer ready-to-wear suits for men.
In 1850, Brooks Brothers took the Golden Fleece as their company’s symbol. This trademark, which is a sheep suspended by a large ribbon, has its roots in the Greek tale of Jason and the Golden Fleece.
Abraham Lincoln was wearing a black Brooks Brothers suit the night he was assassinated. For many years, Books Brothers did not make black suits for that reason.
Today, Brooks Brothers has a conservative image, but through the years they have been fashion innovators. They were early sellers of the silk necktie, being one of the first, in 1890, to sell them in the US. In 1896, John Brooks developed the button-down collar shirt as an improvement to the flapping collars of polo shirts. And in 1930 they introduced seersucker suits to America.
Brooks Brothers sold women’s clothing for the first time in 1949. Especially popular were Brooks button-down shirts in feminine colors. In the 1960s, Brooks Brothers started stores in other cities, and today there are over 180 stores in the US.
