Jimmy Lee Ballard (Paris, 1937 - Lexington, 2007)      Comment   Translate Page
Músicos: Jimmy Lee Ballard (voz y guitarra), Kenny Whalen y Bill Wasson (guitarra), Johnny Ballard (bajo y guitarra acústica), Johnny Lizzy, Shirley "Jay" Congleton, Bud Ecton, Jerry Cole y Danny Thurman (batería), Wendell Lizzy (piano), Charlie Bishop y Bucky Harper (saxo), Kent Gaitskill (bajo), Joe Weber (violín), Norman Osborne y Daryl Waynscott (órgano) y Anita Kerr Singers (coros).           Everything You Always Wanted To Know About: Lucky State Route 13      Comment   Translate Page

Ohio’s State Route 13 is actually rather lucky. It may have changed a bit in its over-90-year history, but it has maintained its designation and general trajectory in that entire period of time. It’s lucky as well as it traverses Richland County from north to south (and vice versa), running through Mansfield and Bellville along the way.[widgets_on_pages id=4] Here are some facts you may not know about Ohio’s tenth longest state route.
  • Length: 166.15 miles, or 267.39 kilometers
  • Counties traversed: Erie, Huron, Richland, Knox, Licking, Perry, Athens
  • Northernmost point: intersection with US6 in Huron
  • Southernmost point: intersection with State Route 550 and US33 in Dover Township, Athens County
  • Major roads crossed en route, north to south: US6, US2, US30, US42, I-71, US 36, US62, US40, I-70, US22
  • County courthouses on State Route 13: Perry County Courthouse in New Lexington; the original Perry County Courthouse in Somerset; one block from the Licking County Courthouse in Newark; one-half block from the Knox County Courthouse in Mount Vernon; one block from the Richland County Courthouse in Mansfield
Construction began on sections of State Route 13 in 1926, with the road being a combination of seven, pre-existing shorter routes. It was originally planned to run from Sandusky to Marietta, however it never made it to ether location. According to a 1969 News Journal article, there is some indication that the name “John Sherman Memorial Highway” was attached to State Route 13 about 13, but the name was never made official. The southern terminus of SR13 was originally in the small village of Chauncey, Ohio, which is still on the route. This summer, someone posted video of travel on various sections of State Route 13. Here’s one that has snippets of the route from Mount Vernon to Bellville.

A Salute to the Unknown Distillers      Comment   Translate Page

Portraits of bourbon legends adorn the walls at Jeff Ruby's Steakhouse,
Lexington, Kentucky. (Photo by Seth Thompson)
In Lexington, Kentucky the new Jeff Ruby's Steakhouse has a 'Bourbon Room,' decorated with images of such bourbon legends as Booker Noe, Jimmy Russell, Elmer Lee, and Bill Samuels. These are the names most bourbon fans know.

But where are the portraits of Paul Kirn and Jimmy Kearns? Who? Those are just two of the dozens, perhaps hundreds, of unknown master distillers, distillers, and plant managers whose portraits probably will never hang in a fancy steakhouse.

Here, for example, are some of the men (and they have pretty much all been men, although that is changing) who made the whiskey at just one defunct distillery, the Yellowstone Distillery on Seventh Street Road in Shively, just south of Louisville.

Yellowstone goes back to J. Bernard Dant's Cold Springs Distillery, which he started at Gethsemane in 1865. He later merged it with Taylor & Williams, a Louisville wholesaler that owned the popular Yellowstone bourbon brand. After Prohibition, J. Bernard and his three sons: Mike, Walter and Sam, and Jimmy Kearns, a nephew, built a new Yellowstone distillery in Shively.

Wilmer Beam, one of the seven distiller sons of Joseph L. Beam, was the distiller. (We would probably say 'master distiller,' but that term wasn't commonly used in those days.) Jimmy Kearns was plant manager and president. When the Thompson family's Glenmore Distilleries bought Yellowstone in 1944, Kearns moved to headquarters as a corporate vice-president and Paul Kirn succeeded him as plant manager. When Willmer Beam retired, Poss Greenwell became the distiller. Jack Beam, Wilmer's nephew, followed Greenwell. He was followed by Joe Ruttle. Bill Creel followed him. When the plant stopped distilling in the 80s, Creel went to Barton in Bardstown.

We only know this particular list, from one distillery spanning about 50 years, because Sam Cecil knew all of them and wrote it down in his book, The Evolution of the Bourbon Whiskey Industry in Kentucky.

Today, the Dant and Beam families are making Yellowstone again at the Limestone Branch Distillery in Lebanon. Proprietors Steve and Paul Beam are descended from both families.

And so it goes in bourbon country.

Legends like Booker and Jimmy deserve all the recognition they receive, but the next time you sip on some fine Kentucky nectar, give a thought to the many unknown distillers and distillery hands who made Kentucky bourbon whiskey what it is today.

Actually, the battles of Lexington and Concord were on April 19th, 1775, but like other holidays, Massachusetts made it a Monday holiday, the third Monday in April. It's celebrated on the 15th this year, tax day. Next year it will be on the 20th, the date it seems to fall on most frequently, and in 2021 it will really be on the 19th.

Ohio State's Spring Game Recruiting Spectacle, Former Player Reunion Goes On Uninterrupted Without Urban Meyer      Comment   Translate Page
Dwayne Haskins knew exactly what he was doing.

At 10:47 a.m. on Saturday, he entered Ohio Stadium for the spring game through the exact same gates he walked though 364 days before. But instead of the cut-off scarlet sweatshirt, headband, headphones around his ears, backpack and rolled-up gray football pants with pads underneath he wore last year, Haskins rocked a black sweatshirt with black sweatpants and a watch befitting of a fashion-conscious, soon-to-be first-round NFL quarterback. And rather than swing his knee brace around in his right hand as he headed toward the locker room, he had his right arm draped around Justin Fields.

Photographers snapped photos of the quarterback duo. Reporters captured videos of them smiling and chatting as they walked into the stadium together.

A complete and total spectacle. Exactly what Ryan Day hoped. And things were just getting ramped up.

Even with Urban Meyer nowhere to be found, Ohio State managed to turn the spring game into what at times early in the afternoon felt like more a recruiting extravaganza and former player reunion than an actual football game. A seemingly endless supply of high-school prospects surrounded the field with dozens of NFL players.

Maximizing brand awareness is as important of a task as anything for a college football head coach at a powerhouse program. While everything on the field on Saturday was aimed at preparing the Buckeyes for the 2019 season, what was happening around it served to put the program in an advantageous position moving forward.

The tunnel in the south-east corner of Ohio Stadium served as a de facto red carpet of the stars – or, effectively, the four-stars and five-stars.

First came a trio of 2020 commits: five-star offensive tackle Paris Johnson Jr., four-star cornerback Lejond Cavazos and four-star quarterback Jack Miller.

Johnson, the No. 4 overall prospect in his class, has worried Ohio State fans recently, taking a tour of the SEC complete with visits to Tennessee, Alabama, LSU and Georgia. But ever the showman, the towering lineman descended down the tunnel with Miller – the team’s quarterback of the future – and Cavazos, who committed to the Buckeyes for a second time on Friday evening.

Johnson has seemingly flirted with decommitting from Ohio State due to Meyer’s retirement, but he remains in the eight-player 2020 class. Miller, whose dad is friends with Meyer, committed to play for the Buckeyes in part due to the now-retired head coach, yet he remains in the class. Cavazos actually did decommit when Meyer announced his impending retirement, but Day helped bring him back into the fold.

Meyer wasn’t at Ohio Stadium on Saturday. But those three prospects were, and they opened the floodgates.

Cade Stover, a four-star linebacker signee from Lexington, made an appearance along with 2020 commit Jakob James, a three-star tackle from Cincinnati. Trey Leroux, a three-star tackle from Norwalk, took the walk into the stadium.

Darrion Henry, an uncommitted four-star defensive end from Cincinnati, ventured down the tunnel 10 minutes after Johnson, a fellow Cincinnatian, arrived.

More and more kept coming.

Five-star 2021 defensive end commit Jack Sawyer. Four-star 2021 defensive end target Najee Story. Four-star 2021 quarterback target Kyle McCord. Four-star 2020 wide receiver target LV Bunkley-Shelton. Four-star 2020 wide receiver target Marvin Harrison Jr. Four-star 2020 wide receiver commit Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Four-star 2021 offensive tackle target Donovan Jackson. Four-star 2021 wide receiver target Jayden Ballard. Five-star 2019 center signee Harry Miller. Four-star 2021 linebacker target Yanni Karlaftis. Four-star 2021 linebacker target Reid Carrico, who received an offer from the Buckeyes on Saturday before the spring game.

And that’s just a taste of the procession of prospects. They littered the field before the game.

Darrion Henry

Sawyer and Henry stood on the grass to watch the defensive linemen warm up. Stover chatted up Sam Hubbard. Jack Miller walked onto the field with Haskins to stand with Justin Fields and Matthew Baldwin as they warmed up.

All of them made the trip to Columbus to see the Buckeyes play their first game of the Day era, so Ohio State made sure they got a taste of star power by hosting as many former players as possible.

During a timeout in the first half, a group of players from last year's team – Haskins, Dre'Mont Jones, Johnnie Dixon, Michael Jordan, Mike Weber, Terry McLaurin, Isaiah Prince and a few others – walked out to midfield to receive their part-Big Ten championship, part-Rose Bowl rings.

Braxton Miller, Ezekiel Elliott, Curtis Samuel, Malik Hooker, Ted Ginn Jr. and Michael Thomas brought the allure. A pair of recent first-round NFL draft picks – Marshon Lattimore and Denzel Ward – were accompanied by Pat Elflein, a former Rimington Trophy winner. Bobby Carpenter worked as Big Ten Network's sideline reporter, and Eddie George was the honorary team captain.

The Buckeyes might have had enough former players in attendance to consist of a full team, but they weren't there to take part in the game. Ohio State wanted them in Columbus to recruit, for their presence alone attracts future talent that hopes to be the next version of the pros.

"Mike Thomas came into my office yesterday and had a recruit in there, and he spent 15-20 minutes with us just talking about what that means and the NFL and the brotherhood that they have of Ohio State Buckeyes in the NFL, and then those guys coming back and supporting the guys who are here right now," Day said. "It's a special group. You can see it. When you go around, you go from guy to guy. It's not just former Buckeyes. It's NFL greats. It's former Buckeye great and All-Americans, all-conference players. It's just remarkable when you get around those guys, the excellence that you're around."

Before the game even finished, photos of recruits posing with former Ohio State players began to trickle out onto social media.

Meyer understood the recruiting game. Everything, including the spring game, became a recruiting showcase. Anything to get prospects interested while building the Ohio State football brand and either winning or preparing to win games.

Day followed Meyer's lead on Saturday. He invited former Buckeyes and top recruits to watch the current team, a formula with proven success.

Winning, ultimately, will determine where the program ends up. But in combining past, present and future, Day did what he could to make Ohio State a desirable program in his first game, even if it was just an exhibition.

7 crimes that shook the world of retail      Comment   Translate Page

Target

  • Retail crime is ubiquitous.
  • But some cases prove to be more eye-catching than others.
  • From an airport iPad heist to a one-woman jewelry thief, here are some standout cases of retail crime.

Retail crime is on the rise.

In 2018, the National Retail Federation estimated that losses from organized retail crime were at "an all time high." The organization estimated that this form of crime costs the industry $777,877 per $1 billion in sales.

Read more: 'Serial returners' are on the rise — and it's causing headaches for retailers like Walmart and Target

But some cases prove to be a bit more shocking than others.

Whether they involved sensational circumstances or a massive haul of millions of dollars, here are seven retail crimes that shook up the whole industry:

A couple was accused of robbing Safeway of $5 million.

ABC reported that Richard Remington and Angela Evans were accused of nicking $5 million worth of goods from different Oregon Safeway stores in 2011. Together, the couple was reportedly seen stealing on camera 178 times.

Cops arrested the pair after a store loss-prevention officer placed a tracking device on their car, according to the Oregonian.

A Stop & Shop owner was charged with using his store to launder millions.

Abduhl Sulaiman owned a Stop & Shop in Lexington, Kentucky, but in 2008 he was arrested on charges that he contributed to an illegal retail scheme.

Authorities concluded that Sulaiman also laundered money for a retail theft ring posing as a Kentucky business called Alpha Trading, according to the Lexington Herald Leader.

According to Retail Info Systems, Sulaiman laundered $60 million through his store.

Robbers made off with thousands of tablets at JFK.

Thieves reportedly made off with thousands of iPads using an airport forklift at John F. Kennedy Airport on November 12, 2012.

And it could have been an inside job. The New York Post reported that the FBI arrested a JFK employee after they learned he had allegedly made "suspicious inquiries to coworkers about the gadget shipment."

Complex reported that the heist scored robbers $1.9 million worth of iPad Minis.

Comment on Boredom by Subotai Bahadur       Comment   Translate Page
OK, it is saying the obvious, but the American Left, including more and more the Democrat-Socialist party [as they functionally are and now style themselves whenever they can], are addicted to the search for power. Here in Colorado they have control over the Governorship and both Houses of the General Assembly. Since January they have locally voided the 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th Amendments of the Bill of Rights. Now, based on an accusation that may be anonymous, a judge can hold a hearing at which a firearms owner can be charged with "being dangerous" and his firearms ordered confiscated without ever being notified of the charge or the hearing and having no chance to defend himself or be represented by counsel. The first that he will hear of it will be when a police TAC Team comes to his door to seize any firearms he owns without warning. In today's America, that is a formula for a) a replay of Waco, and b) shortly thereafter replays of Lexington and Concord. Over half of our counties have declared themselves 2nd Amendment Sanctuaries and the Sheriffs refuse to enforce that law. After the seizure, the legal burden of proof is to prove a negative. The firearms owner has to PROVE he is not a danger, or the order can be renewed endlessly every year. Secondly, with no consultation with the people, the Democrat-Socialists have signed us on to the National Popular Vote Initiative which gives away our Electoral Votes regardless of how Coloradans vote. This was done in such a hurry [about a week total after the General Assembly convened] that they made a drafting error which means we can [and will] bring it to a statewide referendum. The third thing, which may interfere with this vote, is that they are passing a bill mandating automatic voter registration at every encounter with the Department of Motor Vehicles [car registration, plates, change of address, drivers licenses and change of address] and Medicaid you will be automatically registered to vote with the Secretary of State's office and the registration inserted into each county's voter rolls with no involvement by the County Clerk. You do not have to be a United States citizen to do any of the above things. We are a mail-in ballot state, and the Democrat-Socialists will collect the mail in ballots from their foreign clients and vote them. Finally, the Democrat-Socialists just ignore votes if they lose. Last November we had a statewide referendum on a Democrat-Socialist petition to expand the setbacks required for anything to do with the petroleum industry, such as to shut it down. It was voted down 3-1. They just passed a law that inserted the setbacks in defiance of a statewide vote. All of these were done on pure party line votes [there is no such thing as a "moderate" Democrat in Colorado, or one who obeys the law and Constitution]. People I know have talked to Democrat-Socialist legislators and to our Democrat-Socialist Governor. The response to them complaining about the above was, and I am moderating what was said by the legislators and Governor, "FOAD, we have the power.". They are deliberately trying to provoke violent resistance. Pretty much every Democrat-Socialist run polity is doing the same. The Left [and their Republican accomplices] are probably going to get their wish for a political life that is nasty, brutish, and short. I personally do not think that we will avoid open warfare by them until November 2020. And if we do have elections in 2020, if the "counted" votes show that they lose, what are the odds that they will leave office? "<i>All government is a shared myth. When the myth dies, so does the government.</i>" Subotai Bahadur
