13 April 1890: A Devastating Fire at the Herrig Farm      Comment   Translate Page
April 13, 1890
St. Catherine, Mosalem Township, Dubuque County, Iowa

On this Sunday, April 13, 1890, lightning from a heavy storm in the area hit barn and stables at the Herrig farm. Mathias HERRIG rushed to the stable to rescue his horses. On opening the barn’s door he is met by a wall of flames inflicting severe burns to the unfortunate rescuer. Dr. Bigelow, who was summoned immediately, was somewhat confident at first, but soon it appeared that there was little hope to save the victim. In pain, but alert, Mathias Herrig dictated his last will and testament and received the last rites. He passed away on the next day, Monday, April 14.
Mathias HERRIG was born on May 4, 1835 in Wormeldange, Luxembourg, son of Michel HERRIG (1800-1880) and Catharina THILL (1804-1884). He left behind a grieving widow, Elizabeth, and three grown children. He was also survived by three brothers, Wilhelm, Johann and Johann Peter, who lived in neighboring Jackson County, and a sister, Anna OMS, of Wormeldange.
The material losses suffered by the hard-stricken family were considerable. The barn and stables burned to the ground. Four horses, 14 head of cattle, 40 to 50 tons of hay, and a set of new agricultural machinery equipment, etc. were lost in the blaze.
