          Breckinridge County Middle School student wins Kentucky Geographic Bee      Comment   Translate Page      

Taylor Smith of Irvington, an eighth-grader at Breckinridge County Middle School, took top honors at the 2019 Kentucky Geographic Bee on March 29 at WKU’s Knicely Conference Center. 

Smith was among 82 Geographic Bee champions from around the state who competed in the event hosted by WKU’s Geography and Geology Department. WKU faculty, staff and student volunteers judged and moderated the competition. 

Second place and a $300 prize went to eighth-grader Arnav Dharmagadda of Russell Middle School in Russell. Third place and a $100 prize went to Owen Cody a seventh-grader of Lone Oak Middle School in Paducah.

The state winner received $1,000 and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., to represent Kentucky in the national finals of the Bee at National Geographic Society headquarters in May.  The National Geographic Bee is organized by the National Geographic Society. Up to 100 fourth- to eighth-graders in each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Atlantic and Pacific territories, and Department of Defense Dependents Schools participated in state-level Bee on March 29.  The final round, to be held at the National Geographic Society’s headquarters, will be moderated by journalist and humorist Mo Rocca and will be streamed at www.natgeobee.org starting May 22. 

The national champion will receive a $25,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the Society, which includes a lifetime subscription to National Geographic magazine, and an all-expenses-paid Lindblad expedition to the Galápagos Islands. The Gattis Effect

Obviously. Michigan was 123rd in S&P+'s "adjusted pace" stat last year. Michigan was glacial, to the point where they seemed to have no hurry-up package at all. Two minute drills were scheduled with the urgency of a panda on hammock. All twitter erupted with agony as Michigan lined up no-huddle and then waited 25 seconds to snap the ball. Multiple end-of-half drives resulted in embarrassing gaffes.

Also they ran like three RPOs. And had the #22 standard downs run rate despite having a much better passing offense than rushing offense. Protection worries may have had something to do with that, but there are ways to mitigate your issues at right tackle that include ever running a slant. Pep Hamilton got the axe after last year and found a landing place in the XFL, which hired him probably because they can pay him peanuts he next couple years as he collects checks from Michigan. Which says somethin' about somethin'.

Enter Josh Gattis, possessor of the keys and sporter of a #speedinspace hashtag. All indications are that Michigan's going to the spread check-with-me, never-huddle offense that pretty much everyone in college football uses these days. It's not going to be Chaosteam-era Indiana, but it doesn't have to be. Alabama spent large chunks of each game choking out their opponents last year and they were still 85th in tempo, only a hair worse than average. Michigan doesn't have to go light speed all the time. They do have to have it as an option.

So: check-with-me on the sideline, the ability to go tempo in certain situations, a two-minute drill that looks like they've practiced it. Check those boxes and everyone goes home happy.

Donovan Jeter and Mazi Smith

Jeter is almost the last man standing from his giant DL class [Barron]

For the first time in a long, long time Michigan enters the spring game with an established, good-ish offensive line and major questions on the DL. Reps that Jeter and Smith get against the top unit are meaningful measuring sticks. Heck, if they can do things against the second-string interior OL of Filiaga/Spanellis/Honigford that's decently encouraging since all those guys are third year players.

Donovan Jeter and Smith stand out amongst the rest of the DL crew as guys to watch. Dwumfour's injury, while likely not an issue for fall, is still severe enough to draw that weird press conference bit. He's still hurting; if he looks iffy that's probably the foot. Carlo Kemp seems to be in the incremental improvement phase of his career. And… those are the only other scholarship DTs on the roster aside from Phil Paea, who keeps bouncing between OL and DL. Yikes.

Michigan is almost certainly going to kick down one or both of Julius Welschof and Taylor Upshaw at some point but that point has not apparently come. Harbaugh's presser from about a week ago:

Julius Welschof’s made a move. He’s backing up Aidan Hutchinson right now. Taylor Upshaw’s also rising on the depth chart, and Gabe Newburg.

Michigan has split Kwity Paye and Hutchinson until the arrival of Mike Danna presumably puts both guys at anchor; Harbaugh is discussing the DEs there.

Ben Mason does exist but I'm pretty skeptical he can be an impactful player the year after a position switch as a radically undersized DT. Maybe next year.

Mike Sainristil

Michigan's skill position recruiting was extremely strange unless deposing Pep and replacing him with a modern OC was a fait accompli last summer. First they recruited Eric Gray, an emphatically spread tailback. Then they added Giles Jackson, an Oregon-style slot receiver, and George Johnson III, a quarterback in the Denard mold who Michigan plans on converting to receiver.

Gray started wobbling so Michigan picked up an on-and-off relationship with then-BC-commit Mike Sainristil, finally allowing him to commit late in the cycle. But "late" in this context is still early November, before Josh Gattis was hired, or even known to be available. Michigan's Gattis push only came after he was announced as Maryland's new OC—Harbaugh came out of left field.

So Michigan had inexplicably added three explosive waterbug types just in time for a guy who loves him some slot receiver. Sainristil is the only one of those guys already on campus, and in a depleted WR corps he's standing out as a quick, fun little bugger per various practice reports. Seeing him in action should 1) be fun and 2) be part of the Gattis Effect reveal.

Backup Quarterbacks, As Always

Chatter that Dylan McCaffrey has looked better than Shea Patterson this spring is almost certainly going to peter out into nothing. Returning starters with a 65% completion rate, 8 YPA, a 22-7 TD-INT ratio, and 425 rushing yards at 7.7 a pop get replaced zero percent of the time. The most McCaffrey can hope for sans injury is a trick play or two.

Even so, non-Patterson quarterbacks will be exciting to watch because McCaffrey and Joe Milton are some of the most potential-laden guys to wander into the QB room in forever. McCaffrey's arm strength was always the question with him, but no one quite understood the fact that he'd be able to outrun linebackers if he got a chance. Two years in a filled-in version of McCaffrey will be approaching a product Michigan can happily put on the field, and if that's in the ballpark of a guy with those stats when McCaffrey is a redshirt sophomore, hoo boy.

Arm strength was the last thing anyone ever worried about with Milton. A dismal high school completion percentage, and a reputation as a Navarre sort of pocket-bound guy, were the main issues. Milton didn't get as many chances as McCaffrey to demonstrate what he could do but did have a couple of weaving runs that belied his high school stats. He, too, has masive upside. We'll get our first extended look at it on Saturday.

Devin Bush is dead, long live Devin Bush. Josh Ross is the guy who will step into Bush's shoes as the linchpin of the second level, but I've already charted a season of Josh Ross and am here to tell you he's going to be really good as long as he's not picking OL out of his teeth constantly.

The real spring intrigue is at the other spot, where Devin Gil is the guy you'd expect to step into the starting job after splitting time about 40-60 with Ross last year. Gil, however, performed significantly worse than Ross (in your author's eyes, anyway). The door might be open if anyone wants to burst through it with feathers in their mouth, baying for blood. Enter Cam McGrone, a linebacker who I still think got his massive boost in recruting hype because people drew a straight line from him to Bush. Seth:

The same insider said they’re really pushing Gil to take the next step, attacking instead of reacting, and playing faster, but added one more tidbit I found way more interesting: Cam McGrone is coming on quickly, and if he continues on his current trajectory he’ll be in the mix to start.

The highest upside version of the defense has McGrone as a frequent guest, first on passing downs and then maybe eating into Gil's time on standard downs. Since he did not enroll early or play last year this will be our first opportunity to see him in the flesh.

Not that this would be shown in the spring game but i think Brown needs to get creative this year. Not because of our last 2 outings but because of depth and experience. Might see some more odd man fronts this fall.

Between personnel moves and the disaster in Columbus, the questions about this team have completely flipped. The offense is actually loaded, assuming we have scholarship tailbacks we can put on the field. The defense is... not. 

A bad DL bodes poorly for the season; high level teams invariably have great DLs--at least, DLs that are excellent to the level that Michigan's was last year. Losing Solomon, obviously, was a crushing blow, and one has to ask questions about Harbaugh's personnel management when a key guy who is supposed to be the anchor of the line for three years (as opposed to most guys who are playing time or "issue" transfers) lights off for greener pastures. Michigan has the capability of playing 3-3 stack, but they couldn't defend the run with it even when they had guys like Gary, Mone, and Bush staring down opposing blockers, so I don't see that as a realistic option.

There's an awful lot hanging on Gattis here. He has at least a couple of excellent QBs, a receiver corps that is absolutely loaded, a veteran and talented (!) offensive line, and a mandate to mold the offense in his own image. Michigan is not going to lock down good offensive teams this year. The ability to put teams away on offense early will be huge.

*btw Alabama's tempo is average and they barely ran more plays per game than Michigan, but much of that is due to them calling off the dogs at halftime of virtually every game. In first halves, when the games were "competitive" and Alabama was trying everything, they ran boatloads of plays on boatloads of drives; their typical performance last year featured 7 or 8 drives in the first half, 20 first downs, and 35-45 plays on offense.

Michigan’s DT recruiting has been particularly poor in the past couple years but extraneous factors haven’t helped. Solomon was supposed to lead the pack this year. If Jeter hadn’t been injured last year he would be an experienced backup as well. DIB transferring and Hudson’s move to OL and then transferring really depleted the depth. And Paea not staying in one spot hasn’t helped his development. Michigan should have added at least one DT in 2018 to help with depth. Instead we recruited SDEs with the hope that one or two of Upshaw, Welschof, and Hutchinson move over. I think Upshaw eventually becomes that player but that’s a 3 year plan. Getting Mazi and Hinton helps a lot but I expect our DTs will struggle this year and will do better next year with some experience. I think Mike Morris is also a future DT so that should help depth too. Not sure what Michigan’s board looks like right now but I hope we recruit a couple DTs in this cycle.

Known good starting QBs on the schedule in 2019: Ian Book. That’s it.

Fields might be good.

Stephens might be good.

Mertz might be good...in a year or two.

However, the only known commodity is Book. We are getting a relatively good opposing offense schedule this year for this defense of ours.

I didn't see it's Harbaugh's fault. I said that questions need to be asked. This coaching administration has shown signs that there are certain players with whom communication has not been optimal. Guys are going to leave, and sometimes unexpectedly, but when guys like Hudson and Solomon and even Wilton Speight blindside the staff by leaving, it's worth asking if there is something that could be done better.

Was Speight a blindside? I wouldn't lump him in with the other two. That seemed like a honest conversation between him and Harbaugh that Patterson would start over him and they'd probably go with the younger McCaffrey over him if there was an injury.

The fact that Harbaugh let him come back for the pro day kind of confirms there's no bad blood there.

Michigan didn't have Patterson when Speight left. In fact, there were reports they weren't even recruiting him at the time.

Speight made it clear he didn't like having to win a competition to be named the starter in 2017. He wasn't going to like it in 2018 either, when he would have to beat out Peters and McCaffrey.

I wouldn't put Speight in the same category as the other 2. WS faced a high likelihood that he would lose his starting position. Once that happened it was likely that other players would get the snaps that go to the next man up because they would be back the next year and WS wouldn't be back. That's essentially what happened to Peters this year. Milton got snaps ahead of BP because JM will be here next year (this upcoming season) and few people doubt that BP will be transferring.

Other departures have similar reasons for occurring when we learn the background: Evans has academic issues. Deron Irving-Bey's departure was puzzling but is understandable now that he is academically ineligible at CMU.

Right now only the Solomon and Hudson departures seem strange. Maybe we'll find that there are good reasons they left. There has been speculation that Hudson felt he had been passed by Stueber (and, possibly, Mayfield.) That would be an understandable reason for him to leave. It would mean that he was a guy who left for playing time, a common and understandable reason.

That leaves Solomon. I don't think one mysterious departure warrants the expenditure of time on questioning whether Harbaugh needs to work on his communications with his players. (I acknowledge your correction of my question).

Both Hudson and Solomon were "speculated" to have left due to the way Harbaugh handles injured players returning to the lineup. 

It seems reasonable to argue if that was indeed the reason, but there's absolutely no ambiguity around the speculated reason for those two.

Since we don’t know why Solomon left, it seems unwarranted to infer it has something to do with Harbaugh’s handling of him.  Solomon is the guy who committed, decommitted, threw in a “fuck Michigan” at some point, recommitted, and then transferred.  If anything, that suggests the problem may have been Solomon’s inability to stick with a commitment when things were not precisely to his liking.

I agree questions need to be asked, and while I'm not trying to be an apologist for the coaching staff here, I also sense Solomon was not the most stable individual. I get we are talking about kids here and losing Solomon is a blow, but he was all over the place during his recruitment, and even some while he was in AA. 

"I'm coming. Wait, an administrative error occurred, I'm not coming. Fuck Michigan. Ok I'm coming now! [injuries], [cryptic tweets], I'm leaving. Fuck Michigan. [more cryptic tweets], TENNESSEE!!"

He doesn't know, no one does.  It's the same "NO EXCUSES" refrain we hear over and over again.  Solomon could have left for any number of reasons, and Harbaugh may have done everything humanly possible to keep him here.  But he left, and "THAT'S ALL THAT MATTERS" is what will be shouted in critiques. 

I thought I saw someone suggest here that he'd fallen behind pace in school, and despite all the support system around him, couldn't get back on track.  But that's a rumor of a rumor, and I wouldn't lend any credence to it.  I only mention in case someone else had read the same and can confirm or deny.

I don’t know that Paye and Hutchinson both end up at Anchor once Danna arrives. You can’t keep one of those two off the field this year, and with Uche still not being a full time DE, we’d be best with Hutch at Anchor and Paye at End, IMO.

Move could happen, but I wouldn’t assume it.

Kent Hovind w swojej książce "What on Earth Is About to Happen for Heaven's Sake" mówi, że przez 40 lat wierzył w porwanie przed uciskiem, ale zmienił zdanie, gdy dokładnie to zbadał. Na 112 stronie mówi, że nauka o porwaniu przed uciskiem zaczęła się od kilkukrotnych wizji 15-letniej Margaret MacDonald w 1830 roku, która widziała w nich, że CZĘŚĆ kościoła będzie porwana przed uciskiem. Później tego samego roku kościół Caledonian Chapel prowadzony przez Edwarda Irvinga opublikował artykuł, w którym ogłosił, że CAŁY kościół będzie porwany przed uciskiem. ¿Quién era Cortés? ¿El despiadado comeniños que pintó la interesada y (ya) trasnochada leyenda negra? ¿O un visionario de rostro contemporáneo, moderno, individualista, fabricado a sí mismo y capaz de tejer sus propias referencias? Lo cierto es que en los mas de dos años que transcurrieron desde aquel 22 de abril de 1519 en el que Hernán Cortés desembarcó con su hombres en lo que hoy es México y la rendición de la capital del imperio azteca, Tenochtitlán, el 13 de agosto de 1521, el conquistador extremeño llevó a cabo un proceso de «fabricación» de su propia imagen, como atestiguan las Cartas de Relación, escritas de su puño y dirigidas al Rey Carlos V. En ellas narraba, por una parte, la extraordinaria crónica de la aventura heroica de un caballero en una tierra ignota y hostil y, por otra, mostraba una absoluta lealtad a su Rey así como la justificación de su rebeldía ante las órdenes del gobernador Diego Velázquez, firmemente empeñado en que Cortés no llevara a cabo esa descomunal misión. Sin duda la controversia ha rodeado su figura, pero hay un aspecto cada vez mas aceptado, si bien bastante desconocido, y es que lejos de la iconografía apegada a la leyenda negra que le ha venido mostrando como soldado voraz y armado de una crueldad sin límites, el extremeño era un hombre culto y dotado de no poca sensibilidad literaria. A este último punto contribuyó sin duda el hecho de que a los 14 años fuera enviado a Salamanca por sus padres, Martín Cortés Monroy y Catalina Pizarro Altamirano, con la idea de que estudiara leyes en la Universidad, aunque para disgusto de sus progenitores no llegó a ingresar en la institución, posiblemente debido a su carácter bullicioso y su inclinación a los lances amatorios. Si es cierto que en los dos años que permaneció en la ciudad castellana estudió gramática y latín con Francisco Núñez de Valera y tomó contacto con la lectura de los clásicos. Mas tarde, ya en Valladolid, adquirió práctica mientras trabajaba con un escribano. Mentirosas historias Bien es cierto que en sus escritos y en los textos oficiales compuestos «por encargo», como los de Francisco López de Gómara, su cronista y hagiógrafo, Cortés no hace referencia alguna a sus inspiraciones literarias. Pero también lo es que en un análisis de sus páginas se pueden encontrar similitudes con las aventuras narradas en los inspiradores «best sellers» de la época, las novelas de caballería, llamadas también por intelectuales y moralistas «mentirosas historias» y posteriormente «literatura ligera», o «género ligero de ficción», como fueron Tirante el Blanco, el Amadís de Gaula y otras tantas por las que las autoridades, tanto eclesiásticas como seglares, sentían una sistemática hostilidad, a pesar de que el propio Carlos V era muy aficionado a ellas. En el éxito de estas publicaciones, que se vendían como pan caliente, tiene mucho que ver la llegada a Sevilla, en 1500, del avispado y astuto comerciante alemán Jacobo Cromberger, experto en tipografía y fundador de la imprenta que llevó su nombre y de la que salieron cantidades ingentes de esas ficciones caballerescas, coincidiendo con el crecimiento de la ciudad que gozaba del monopolio del expansivo comercio colonial. Era un negocio redondo y, en muchos casos, ajeno a las leyes que limitaban la proliferación y distribución de estos libros. Como señala el hispanista estadounidense Irving Leonard en «Los libros del conquistador», parece claro que existían «relaciones entre los conquistadores y sus descendientes y las obras de ficción que condicionaron su mentalidad y sus actos, esas obras que calmaban su nostalgia de expatriados, y que tenían para ellos una significación mayor que para los lectores de la propia España». Señala también Leonard que «esta literatura de ficción, a pesar de su naturaleza popular, también provocó las emociones y ganó la mas apasionada devoción de las clases cultas de España, desde el propio emperador Carlos V hasta su mas humilde servidor. (…) Tanto en el palacio real como en la mas humilde cabaña, las historias se leían muchas veces en voz alta, para que pudiesen compenetrarse de ellas los iletrados. Toda la jerarquía aristocrática, hasta las damas mas encopetadas y el clero, ocupaban sus frecuentes ocios en tan emocionante pasatiempo». Bernal Díaz del Castillo, en su póstuma y revisionista «Historia verdadera de la Conquista de la Nueva España », da a entender que Cortés había sido lector de las «Sergas de Esplandián», el quinto libro del ciclo de Amadís y, por lo tanto, debía haber estado familiarizado con las hazañas novelescas del valeroso caballero de la ficción que, como tantos otros, se mostraban como reales para el lector. La aparente historicidad de los relatos de ficción y la enorme expansión del horizonte que resultaba de los recientes descubrimientos hacían verosímiles las fantasías con que los escritores salpicaban sus obras, avivaban la imaginación de los lectores y movilizaban a los mas aventureros a buscar las maravillas y los tesoros ocultos cuya existencia se afirmaba. Nada era imposible en los albores luminosos de la era moderna. Era en esos libros en los que ya quedaban plasmados algunos de los reinos exóticos con ciudades cuyas calles estaban pavimentadas de oro y plata, islas únicamente habitadas por mujeres guerreras y auténticos paraísos terrenales que los aventureros, exploradores, descubridores y conquistadores trasladaron del papel impreso a aquel mundo tan nuevo como desconocido. Sin embargo ubicar únicamente en estas «mentirosas historias» los conocimientos literarios de Cortés sería un error, puesto que como el propio Menéndez Pelayo afirmaba, la escritura «nerviosa y viril, rápida y sobria» de las Memorias de César se había reproducido «a través de los siglos, sin necesidad de imitación directa (…) en las Cartas de Relación de Hernán Cortés». También el lexicógrafo y filólogo Alonso Zamora Vicente insistía en que las Cartas «atestiguan (a Cortés) como sabedor del estilo de Julio César, que habría conocido en sus estudios de Salamanca». Insiste Alonso Zamora en que Cortés era conocedor de los clásicos romanos y que tenía casi con seguridad que haber leído y estudiado a Plutarco (Vidas Paralelas) o Salustio (La Guerra de Jugurta). Acción/Reacción Ante la emergencia de este boom literario y como newtoniana reacción ante una acción comenzaron a surgir publicaciones de carácter moralista contra esos «libros vanos, escritos por hombres ociosos y despreocupados, sin letras, llenos de vicios y suciedad, en los cuales yo me maravillo cómo puede haber cosa que deleite a nadie» (Juan Luis Vives, Instrucción de la mujer cristiana), «…en lo mesmo corren también lanzas parejas los mozos, los cuáles con los avisos de tan malos libros, encendidos con el deseo natural no tratan sino como deshonran la doncella, y afrentan la casada, de todo esto son causa estos libros…» (Francisco Cervantes de Salazar). «Compasión es ver los días y las noches que consumen muchos en leer libros vanos» (Antonio de Guevara, Libro llamado relox de príncipes). Por citar solo unos pocos de los muchísimos ejemplos de este tipo de obras. O el pliego de instrucciones que la beata reina Isabel de Portugal, actuando en ausencia de su esposo Carlos V (recordemos muy aficionado a este tipo de «libros mentirosos») da a la Casa de Contratación de Sevilla en 1531: «Yo he sido informada que se pasan a las indias muchos libros de romance de historias vanas y de profanidad como son el amadis y otros desta calidad y por que este es mal exercicio para los indios e cosa en que no es bien que se ocupen ni lean, por ende yo vos mando que de aquí adelante consintais ni deis lugar a persona alguna pasar a las indias libros ningunos de historias y cosas profanas…». Las otras miradas En años y siglos posteriores a la gesta cortesiana y hasta la irrupción de la por fortuna (y por esfuerzo de muchos) cada vez mas desacreditada leyenda negra la figura del conquistador fue presentada por la historiografía sucesivamente como la de un «héroe del Renacimiento, cumplidor de su destino glorioso e inevitable para el tiempo barroco, individuo iluminado benefactor de la Humanidad en la Ilustración, figura condenada a la gloria y la postergación para los románticos, creador de un México nuevo para los positivistas, arquetipo de conquistador criminal para el indigenismo primario y pedagógico de la revolución mexicana. Desde los años ochenta del pasado siglo devino en reconocido fundador del extraordinario México virreinal, para ser visto en nuestros días como personaje con ideas propias y promotor de la globalización», como señala el investigador del CSIC Manuel Lucena Giraldo, quien añade que «es imposible dejar de reconocer en Cortés no solo la posesión de un milimétrico sentido de la oportunidad, sino de una conciencia del poder de la escritura como propaganda, justificación o coartada». En el cúmulo de esas «otras miradas» Winston A. Reynolds atestigua en su breve ensayo Hernán Cortés y los héroes de la Antigüedad que las hazañas del conquistador le encumbraban a la altura (o por encima, en muchos casos) de héroes grecolatinos como Alejandro, Aquiles, Hércules, Marco Antonio, Trajano, Ulises, Pirro, Pompeyo, Eneas, Escipión…; o no grecolatinos como Sesostris, Jerjes, Aníbal, Amilcar, Carlomagno, Ciro o el mismísimo Rey Arturo. Narraciones estas rayanas en la hagiografía de autores como Palatino de Curzola (Tratado, 1559), Gonzalo de Illescas (Historia Pontifical, 1574), Luis Zapata (Carlo Famoso, 1566), Saavedra Guzmán (El peregrino indiano, 1599), Gabriel Lasso de la Vega (Cortés valeroso, 1588 o Mexicana, 1594), Arias de Villalobos (Canto intitulado Mercurio, 1623), Gaspar de Ávila (El valeroso español y primero de su casa, 1650), Fernando de Zárate (La conquista de México, 1655) o Luis Vélez de Guevara (La mayor desgracia de Carlos Quinto, obra por mucho tiempo atribuida a Lope de Vega). Señala Reynolds que «La singular conquista de Cortés era la de un hombre moderno e íntegro que, por su superioridad personal, triunfó en la vida y logró adelantarse a los antiguos. Para los conquistadores y para los escritores del Siglo de Oro la antigüedad clásica era un elemento operante de su tradición cultural, pero, al fin, menos importante que la experiencia contemporánea y el genio inventivo».

Wally, what is your opinion about the three camps in eastern Poland where David Irving says "maybe" 2M Jews were killed. I believe Irving stated (if my memory serves) that if you visit those areas today you find absolutely nothing, no wood, no bricks, no cremations, no evidence that anything at all happened there. yet he thinks quite a lot did happen, altho it's not permitted to do any digging.           Open crime data in Irving, Texas: an uphill battle      Comment   Translate Page      
It is our view that a fundamental resource for a modern police department is crime data made openly available to citizens and the press, meaning it is free for anyone to access, collect, use, and share. 

We wanted to share the interaction and the state of open crime data in Irving,TX. By sharing this interaction, we hope to educate anyone looking to make crime data open in their community. 

Open crime data is imperative for transparency and policing

Open crime data allows joint problem solving, innovation, enhanced understanding, and accountability between communities and the law enforcement agencies that serve them. ‘Open’ meaning the data is available for anyone to collect, copy, use, and share without restrictions.

Many police agencies in the Irving area share data openly already. 

Dallas was one of the first followed by Fort Worth, Grand Prairie, and now Denton does it too. By opening up crime data in their city, these agencies are now getting crime mapping for free from multiple companies. Irving is still paying for their crime mapping.

The Background

For almost 10 years SpotCrime had been getting public crime data from the Irving police department and reporting to citizens at no cost. Late last year, the crime data stopped and we were slow to respond. 

We asked Irving Police Chief Spivey for the data to be turned back on, and he said “No”.

His reasoning was because the decision to share data with SpotCrime was made with an old administration. The Chief and Mayor made an arbitrary decision to turn off access to public information.

When we asked again, the Chief said he and the Mayor’s office would allow the feed to be turned back on, their only ask being SpotCrime sign an indemnity agreement from the City of Irving

We work with hundreds, if not thousands, of police agencies nationwide. Irving is the only city to ask for an agreement in place before we can receive public crime information.

One response that we got from Irving is that they pay a vendor to provide this information to the public.

Not only is Irving paying for crime mapping, the vendor they use does not have a mobile app or mobile access. This means that approximately 60% of the population who uses a mobile device to access the internet can not view crime data in their Irving neighborhood. 

Additionally, Chief Spivey and city administration informed us that SpotCrime would now be charged $71 a day for data. Previously, we were getting the data for free.

This means that Irving wants to charge SpotCrime $25,000/year for access to public information. This is a completely unreasonable charge and far exceeds our estimate of the actual cost incurred in accessing, duplicating, supplying, or searching for the requested records. With live in a digital age, the cost of making this data available is near zero. We have offered to pay up to $2,000 for the one time programming costs to get the data feed back online similar to the previous Irving administration. However, we do still believe any fee should be waived because making this data available benefits the public. And, it is important to note that the crime mapping vendor Irving uses gets the data for free.

Dereliction of duty 

We have pointed out to Irving that the vendor is not open data. It does not allow the public or press to copy, collect, use or share the information.

Why would any modern police department allow a vendor they are paying to put restrictions on citizens and the press. How does limiting the ability to share help the public and reduce crime? 

This is a dereliction of duty on the police and city’s behalf.

Allowing a preferential company better access to public information is not in the interest of transparency. It demonstrates an almost intentional priority to not be transparent with crime data. Doing this locks the data in a siloed and controlled environment that can’t be inspected, therefore, reducing accountability. There is inherent incongruity with the obscure explanation that a police department can filter the data for a vendor to report publicly, but can not filter for public access.

The solution for public good

Currently, we are still waiting for Irving to send over indemnity language and we are providing pushback on the charges. We have offered to pay a one time fee of up to $2,000 to create this programming, but Irving has not taken us up on this offer. And, we have started to FOIA the data from them. 

The best solution is for Irving to deliver crime data openly for anyone to access, use, and share, like hundreds of agencies across the US are already doing

Hat man zwar schon in allen Varianten gesehen, berührend ist sie dennoch diese Szene aus der TV-Serie Bosch, in der zwei ältere Polizisten in Zivil mal wieder eine Todesnachricht überbringen müssen. Solche Aufgaben können niemals Routine werden. Die Reaktion der Frau, die die Nachricht empfängt, spiegelt den Schrecken. Parallel wird gezeigt, wie Ermittler Harry Bosch dem toten Teenager allein in der Kühle des Pathologischen Instituts einen letzten Besuch abstattet. Den Soundtrack zu der dreiminütigen Sequenz bildet Charlie Hadens geflüsterte Version des Duke Ellington Standards Come Sunday.

Ein subtiler Albtraum des klassischen Neo-Noir, könnte man meinen, aber keine Schattenspiele erzählen die traurigen Geschichten, sondern die gleißende Sonne Kaliforniens. Sie lässt die Überbringer der Todesnachricht blinzelnd aus dem Auto steigen, der Schrecken strahlt in gleißenden Farben der Popkultur, sodass sich sogar die knallharte Ermittlerlegende mit Ray-Bans schützen muss. Bosch kehrt bald in die Wohnzimmer zurück: Amazon Prime Video hat die fünfte Staffel der Serie für den 19. April angekündigt.

Im Trailer treffen wir alte Bekannte. Mit dabei sind wieder Boschs Partner Jerry Edgar (Jamie Hector), der ewige Vorgesetzte Police Chief Irvin Irving (Lance Reddick) und Boschs nicht mehr ganz so nervige Tochter Maddie (Madison Lintz). Titus Welliver ist der stilecht unangepasste Cop Harry Bosch, er kennt die „Abkürzungen“, durch die man dem Polizeiapparat ein Schnippchen schlägt. Dieser moderne Philip Marlowe ist kaum von der Performance Wellivers zu trennen. Ein Typ, der in Anlehnung an Robert De Niros legendäres Method-Acting-Diktum auch ein hart gekochtes Ei spielen könnte.

Die literarische Vorlage zu der Fernsehserie bilden die Bosch-Romane des amerikanischen Autors Michael Connelly. Zuletzt ist in Deutschland der Roman Die Verlorene bei Droemer erschienen. In dieser Reihe löst Bosch bereits seinen 21. Fall. Und obwohl die Romanfigur ihrer TV-Version einiges an Lebenserfahrung voraushat, findet man durchaus Parallelen – auch hier grüßt Philip Marlowe allenthalben. Allerdings empfindet man fast Mitleid, wenn Connelly seinen Protagonisten für jeden Gin-Gimlet, den das große Vorbild in The Long Goodbye trinken durfte, zu einer Iced Latte bei Starbucks verdonnert.

In Die Verlorene muss Bosch gleich zwei Fälle lösen. Mittlerweile ist er als ehrenamtliche Teilzeitkraft beim Police Department von San Fernando untergekommen – vom LAPD hat er sich in einem langen Rechtsstreit getrennt und verdient sein Geld hauptsächlich als Privatdetektiv. Im beschaulichen Vorort bekommt es Bosch mit einem Serienvergewaltiger zu tun, und dessen Täterprofil schließt auch einen zukünftigen Mord nicht aus. Der sogenannte Screen-Cutter dringt scheinbar wahllos in die Häuser seiner Opfer ein, indem er die Fliegengitter der Fenster zerschneidet. Dabei ist er den Polizisten zunächst immer einen Schritt voraus, er kennt seine Opfer genau, selbst deren Menstruationszyklen sind keine Geheimnisse.

Das literarische Motiv ist nicht brandneu: Niemand kann sich sicher sein, und die amerikanische Vorstadtidylle ist nur eine Illusion. Schwung in die Ermittlung bringt Boschs Sidekick Bella Lourdes, die nicht nur als Übersetzerin ins Spiel kommt – in San Fernando leben überwiegend Einwohner mit Latino-Hintergrund –, sondern der gerechten Sache eigenwillig ihren Stempel aufdrückt. Zusätzlich kommt Spannung auf: Ist Bella Lourdes womöglich in Gefahr?

Der Einstieg in den titelgebenden Fall könnte chandleresker (das Wort gibt es wirklich!) nicht sein – Bosch erhält Zutritt zum Haus des schwerreichen Großindustriellen Whitney Vance, eines fiktiven Patenkinds der Hollywoodlegende Howard Hughes. Vance gibt, da er sein weltliches Ende kommen sieht, dem Privatdetektiv den Auftrag, einen leiblichen Erben zu finden. Als Student hatte er sich mit einer Frau eingelassen – seine Familie sorgte für ein bitteres Ende der Mesalliance. Die Suche im großen Nirgendwo schafft die Möglichkeit, dem Fall eine besondere Topografie zu geben, nach und nach erkennt der Leser den Gott der Stadt, sieht diese Stadt der Engel mit anderen Augen, denn die eigentliche Hauptfigur in der Harry-Bosch-Serie ist doch der Moloch L.A. Darüber hinaus erklingt ein weiteres Leitmotiv in Die Verlorene. Ohne das große amerikanische Trauma geht es nicht: Die Verarbeitung des Vietnamkriegs gibt dem etwas konventionellen Whodunit-Plot den gesellschaftspolitischen Tiefgang, verbindet ihn mit den früheren Bänden.

Connelly flicht auch diejenigen Elemente ein, derentwegen die Bosch-Geschichten so erfolgreich fürs Fernsehen adaptiert worden sind. Die Bilder der Stadt und all der Jazz kulminieren da, wo Bosch zur Ruhe kommt. In seinem Haus in den Hollywood Hills blickt er hinunter nach Downtown L.A., hört Musik – „round midnight“ ist der Morgen unendlich weit. In diesen Momenten trinkt Harry Bosch Bier statt Kaffee, und die Sonnenbrille hat er abgesetzt.

The playoffs are finally here and the Celtics host the Indiana Pacers in a matinee game for the first game of the series.  This is the sixth time that the Celtics and Pacers are meeting in the playoffs, with all 6 series coming in the first round.  The Celtics won the first 3 series while the Pacers have won the last two in 03-04 and 04-05. 

The Celtics won the series between these two teams 3 games to 1.   The Celtics lost the first game back on November 3 in Indiana by just one point.  They then won the final three games by an average of 13 points per game,  including a home and home set in the final two weeks of the season. 

Record-wise, these two teams are very close with the Celtics winning just one more game than the Pacers in the regular season.  The Celtics finished the regular season with a 29-12 record at home while the Pacers finished with a 19-22 record on the road.  In spite of their success in the regular season against the Pacers,  the Celtics can't underestimate them. 

Hopefully the Celtics were paying attention to the two Eastern Conference series that were played on Saturday.  The underdog Orlando Magic rallied to beat the favored Toronto Raptors in Toronto.  Also,  the Brooklyn Nets easily beat the favored Philadelphia 76ers in Philadelphia.  If the Celtics come into this game expecting to get an easy win,  they may end up down one game in the series. 

The Celtics expect to have everyone healthy other than Marcus Smart, who is expected to miss at least the first round with an oblique injury.  As of now, Brad Stevens hasn't given any indication as to who will fill in for him in the starting lineup. I'm going to guess that it will be either Jaylen Brown or Terry Rozier. 

Brown started last season at the two and gives the Celtics more size in the starting lineup  but Rozier has always done very well when he starts.  Brad Stevens has said that he would start whoever was most locked in during practices on Friday and Saturday.  The Pacers are all healthy other than Victor Oladipo, who has missed most of the season with a knee injury.

Bogdanovic averaged 18.0 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.0 assists during the regular season.  He is shooting 49.7% from the field and 42.5% from beyond the arc and if not defended closely, he can put up big numbers.  Tatum needs to stay with him both in the paint and on the perimeter.  The Celtics had success in their final regular season game by having Marcus Smart guard him but without that option in this game,  Tatum and the others must step up to slow him down.

Turner averaged 13.3 points, 7.2 rebounds 1.6 assists and 2.7 blocks in the regular season.  The Celtics always need to be aware of where he is when they go to the basket because he is always looking to block shots.  Baynes needs to box him out to keep him away from the rim.  He also shoots 38.8% from beyond the arc and so the Celtics need to stay with him on the perimeter as well. 

Honorable Mention

Gordon Hayward vs Domantas Sabonis
Sabonis averaged 14.1 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 2.9 assists in the regular season.  He is shooting 59.0% from the field and 52.9% from beyond the arc. Sabonis is relentless every minute he is on the floor and he is very versatile.   The Celtics need Hayward to step up and play well on both ends of the court to contain Sabonis on the defensive end and make him work on the offensive end. 

Keys to the Game
Play Defense -  Defense wins games.   The Pacers average 108.0 points per game while the Celtics average 112.4 points per game.  The Pacers have a defensive rating of 105.9, good for 3rd in the league while the Celtics have a defensive rating of 107.0, 6th in the league.  The Celtics have let their defense slip at times this season, but now that the playoffs are here,  they must play that tough team defense that has made them so hard to beat in the past. 

Rebound - The Celtics must box out and crash the boards.  They can't score without the ball and it will take extra effort on their part to grab the rebounds.  The Celtics must crash the boards as a team to beat the Pacers to rebounds.  Rebounding takes effort and when the Celtics put out that extra effort on the boards, it usually follows through to the rest of their game. 

Move the Ball Carefully - Both teams depend on ball movement for their offense. The Celtics need to move the ball and find the open man but they have to make careful passes and not get careless.    The Pacers are 3rd in the league with 19.1 points off turnovers per game and so the Celtics must focus on making good passes and be aware of the Pacers ability to close out the passing lanes.  If the Celtics get careless, the Pacers will make them pay.

Play 48 Minutes - During the regular season, the Celtics would either get off to a strong start and then let up or they would start slow and have to try to make up a big deficit.  It's now the playoffs and opponents are going to be playing hard every minute and the Celtics have to match that and play even harder for all 48 minutes.  Start strong and play hard all the way to the final buzzer. 

Be Aggressive
- The Celtics must be the more aggressive team.  They have to especially be aggressive going to the basket and getting into the paint.  They have to be aggressive in beating the Pacers to loose balls and rebounds.  They have to be the more aggressive team on defense and they have to play harder than the Pacers for 48 minutes.   

X-Factors
Home Game - The Celtics worked to get home court in the first round and now they have to take advantage of it.  The crowd will hopefully be loud and rowdy and give the Celtics a boost.   The Pacers  struggled on the road losing 8 of their last 10 road games.  The crowd will hopefully throw the Pacers off a bit and give the Celtics an advantage in their building.

Bench Play - The Pacers rank 10th in bench scoring with 39.2 points per game.  Their reserves are 2nd in FG% (47.9%) and 5th in 3 point %(35.9%).  The Celtics reserves will take a hit with Smart being out, but they have to play tough defense along with keeping the offense going when the starters get a rest. 

Gordon Hayward - Gordon Hayward finally began to look close to 100% toward the end of the season and it made a huge difference in the way the Celtics played as a team.  Over the last month of the season, Hayward averaged 18.3 points on 65% shooting, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.0 assists.  The Celtics need him to continue to be aggressive on both ends of the court.

          Celtics win rock fight against Pacers 84-74, take Game 1 in ugly fashion      Comment   Translate Page      


The Boston Celtics overcame a terrible first half performance to storm back and beat the Indiana Pacers 84-74 and take Game 1 of their first round playoff matchup. Call if nerves, call it not having Marcus Smart, call it whatever you want, the C's had a very ugly start, but were able to win a rock fight of a game simply because they have more talent on the roster. It's obviously great to win Game 1, but the Celtics will need to play a lot better if they want a deep postseason run.


After being comically secretive about it leading up to game time, Brad Stevens decided to replace Smart with Jaylen Brown in the starting lineup. Brown has been one of the most consistent players since the All-Star break, and probably the team's best bet to replicate Smart's defense.



The Celtics struggled with turnovers early in the game. Especially on their own home court, that's a tough look for the first playoff game. Indiana was able to capitalize on the sloppy play and take an early 12-6 lead halfway through the first quarter.



After the Pacers opened up an 8-point lead, the Celtics answered with a quick 7-0 run to cut the lead back down to just one. All points in the run came from Marcus Morris (5) and Gordon Hayward (2) off the bench.

Indiana continually tried to switch bigger wings onto Kyrie Irving and post him up on the defensive end, but Kyrie was able to hold his own and even force a few turnovers to get out in transition. Kyrie certainly isn't a defensive dynamo, but he can hold his own when he is engaged.



Morris, after having a pretty rough scoring stretch since the All-Star break, was hitting from everywhere in the first quarter. Morris was the spark that Boston needed in a sloppy stretch of play. Mook scored 12 of the team's first 20 points, knocking down two threes and adding some much-needed grit.





After Boston scored the first points of the second quarter on a nifty Hayward fast break layup, Indiana scored the next nine to take a 7-point lead. The Celtics looked confused on a number of their defensive rotations, and gave the Pacers a number of open looks from beyond the arc, which came back to bite them.

One of the issues on the offensive end was Boston's continued attempts to attack Domantas Sabonis in isolation. After getting the big man switched onto their wings/guards, the Celtics forced drives against him. But Sabonis held his own, and that led to a number of ugly shot attempts.

Even after Stevens inserted Kyrie and Al Horford back into the lineup, the Pacers pushed the lead out to as many as 11 on the back of a 16-5 run. Indiana looked like they wanted the game much more than the C's, and it looked like the Celtics might have taken them a bit lightly.



The Celtics played ugly basketball in the first half. Ten turnovers, just 38 points on 32 percent shooting from the field, and an overall malaise that has, unfortunately, come to personify this team. The Pacers are a tough-playing team, and the Celtics need to be focused and play the right way to get a win. Regular season results mean nothing in the playoffs.



After a few (more) ugly turnovers to start the second half, Horford gave the team a shot of energy with back-to-back post shots, including a spin move reverse and-1 layup, that also gave Thaddeus Young his fourth foul, which sent him to the bench. The Horford charge tied the game at 45-45, and the TD Garden was booming.

While Horford was asserting dominance on the offensive end, the Pacers had gone completely cold to start the third quarter. They missed their first eight shots from the field and didn't score their first points of the second half until a Myles Turner free throw broke the seal 4:58 into the quarter.



Kyrie had his finger prints all over the third quarter run for the C's. He had eight points, two assists, two rebounds, and a couple of great defensive/effort plays in the first nine minutes of the third quarter. At no point was this a beautiful display of basketball from either team, but Kyrie was involved and engaged, and the Boston faithful could feel it.

The Celtics were playing solid basketball, and even opened up a double-digit lead late in the third, but Kyrie picked up his fourth foul and was forced to the bench. With Smart out and Kyrie on the bench, Terry Rozier needed to make an impact to keep the lead.



The Celtics followed up their third quarter performance with a 10-2 run to open the fourth. I don't know if they "flipped the playoff switch," but Boston certainly figured something out in the second half. Kyrie and Morris got the offense going, Aron Baynes and Brown pumped up the defense, and Indiana folded in on themselves.



The Celtics pushed the lead up to 20 points at times in the fourth quarter, and the rest was history. The Pacers just didn't have enough offensive firepower to compete once the Celtics started to make their shots. This was one of the uglier games of the season, but the C's were still able to win big once they figured things out.
