Regional qualifiers

Athletes from Inland Northwest colleges and area athletes from other schools who have met the qualifying standards and declared to compete in the NCAA regional competition May 30-31. Conference champions (CC) earn entry without meeting the standards. The 10,000 meters, decathlon and heptathlon are not contested at the regional level, but are filled with athletes who meet either the automatic or provisional qualifying standards. Top-five finishers in individual events and top three relay teams from regionals advance to the NCAA championships. A select number of at-large athletes who didn’t achieve those finishes will fill the national fields, based on the national descending order of performance lists.

Waiting Time for ALJ Disability Hearings: Why Does It Take So Long?      Comment   Translate Page
In the last 25 years of handling only social security disability in Dallas Texas, I have seen the waiting time for the Administrative Law Judge hearing go up, and go down. But it has never gone down to anything close to an acceptable level.  Clients asking me all the time” “Why does it take so long to get a hearing”?  (Attorney Nick Ortiz has written a very good article on the subject as well). First lets look at what the hearing wait times and hearing request backlog looks like in Dallas Fort Worth and throughout the nation.  The below chart show that in the last 4 years the waiting time for a hearing peaked in 2017 at 605 days.  (Ponder that staggering number for a moment).  But the good news is that the wait time went down in bot 2017 and 2018.  As you can see the Administrative Law Judge hearing wait time for 2018 was 538 days. So how do the waiting times in the 3 social security disability hearing offices in the Dallas Fort…
2 children killed as storms lash Texas      Comment   Translate Page

Storms hammered east Texas on Saturday, with two children killed when a tree fell on a car, authorities said.

The children, ages 3 and 8, were in the back seat with their parents in the front when the tree fell on their vehicle around 3 p.m., said Angelina County Sheriff's Department Captain Alton Lenderman. The children were pronounced dead at the scene.

A tornado ripped through Franklin, Texas, on Saturday, as the National Weather Service in the state posted one tornado warning after another.

There were reports of multiple injuries, the NWS said, and CNN affiliate KWTX reported widespread damage in Franklin. Trees were pulled up by the roots, roofs torn off buildings, and the cinder block foundation was all that was left of a mobile home in the town, which is southeast of Waco.

The entire town of Franklin and neighboring Bremond lost electricity, with power expected to be restored Saturday night.

To the north, dime-sized hail pounded the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Texas is seeing the beginning of the dangerous and severe storms forecast to slam parts of the Southeast and Ohio River Valley this weekend.

The powerful system will create the potential for life-threatening winds, strong tornadoes and large hail.

The Storm Prediction Center has issued a moderate risk (level 4 out of 5) for severe weather Saturday across parts of the Lower Mississippi Valley.

And Sunday, an enhanced risk (level 3 out of 5) stretches from Atlanta to Cleveland.

4 tornado safety tips that could save your life

Severe storms possible from Texas to Mississippi

Track the storms with CNN's storm tracker

CNN meteorologist Chad Myers said the warm air present during the afternoon enhanced the atmosphere's instability, creating more energy for storms to tap into and aiding in their development.

He said the threat for severe weather is greatest at such times.

The storms most capable of producing tornadoes and large hail will be the individual, rotating cells that form ahead of a larger complex of thunderstorms.

Tornadoes possible overnight in Alabama

By late Saturday, the storms were expected to organize into a line as they cross the western border of Mississippi.

The system will begin to move through Alabama overnight and is expected to reach Georgia by Sunday morning.

The energy from warm afternoon temperatures will diminish, but the risk for tornadoes will not be over.

"The storm is so vigorous that tornadoes are still possible after dark," Myers said.

Tornadoes at that time can be especially dangerous since they are difficult to see and people are less likely to receive warnings while they're asleep.

Georgia, the southern Appalachians and Ohio Valley

The most significant risk of severe weather is expected Saturday, but there's still considerable potential Sunday.

The Storm Prediction Center issued an enhanced risk across a broad area, stretching from eastern Alabama through the southern Appalachians and into the Ohio Valley. The main line of storms will begin to push into this area late Sunday morning and trek to the east on Sunday afternoon. The center said it expects the threat of severe weather to increase throughout the afternoon.

"Damaging winds appear to be the greatest threat on Sunday, but tornadoes will also be possible," CNN meteorologist Dave Hennen said.

The risk will slowly diminish as the system begins to weaken Sunday evening.

Sunday tee times moved up at The Masters

Georgia's Augusta National Golf Club is included in the slight risk area Sunday as the Masters golf tournament concludes. Tournament organizers have moved up tee times for Sunday because of the storm threat.

The storms are expected to move through the Augusta area during the afternoon and evening.

The tornado threat will be lower by then, but damaging winds could still present hazardous conditions.

CNN's Theresa Waldrop contributed to this report.

500 flights canceled in east Texas due to extreme weather

DF-Xinhua Report

Powerful storms moving through the U.S. state of Texas Saturday caused significant travel delays, and over 500 flights were canceled at international airports in Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth region, about 390 km north of downtown Houston.

According to reports, the storms also spawned several tornadoes, resulting in significant damage and injuries in Franklin, a town with residents over 1,000, about 210 km northwest of downtown Houston.

There have been reports of injuries, down trees, flipped trailers and damaged homes. There have also been reports of collapsed buildings downtown.

Several other tornadoes were confirmed in Texas Saturday. In Louisiana, an image taken Saturday morning in Stonewall shows what could be another tornado.

Earlier, hail as large as 3 inches in diameter was reported in areas north of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and north of San Antonio, about 320 km west of downtown Houston.

Open crime data in Irving, Texas: an uphill battle      Comment   Translate Page
It is our view that a fundamental resource for a modern police department is crime data made openly available to citizens and the press, meaning it is free for anyone to access, collect, use, and share.

We wanted to share the interaction and the state of open crime data in Irving,TX. By sharing this interaction, we hope to educate anyone looking to make crime data open in their community.

Open crime data is imperative for transparency and policing

Open crime data allows joint problem solving, innovation, enhanced understanding, and accountability between communities and the law enforcement agencies that serve them. ‘Open’ meaning the data is available for anyone to collect, copy, use, and share without restrictions.
Dallas Police Open Data Portal

Many police agencies in the Irving area share data openly already.

Dallas was one of the first followed by Fort Worth, Grand Prairie, and now Denton does it too. By opening up crime data in their city, these agencies are now getting crime mapping for free from multiple companies. Irving is still paying for their crime mapping.

The Background

For almost 10 years SpotCrime had been getting public crime data from the Irving police department and reporting to citizens at no cost. Late last year, the crime data stopped and we were slow to respond.

We asked Irving Police Chief Spivey for the data to be turned back on, and he said “No”.

Free SpotCrime crime map for Irving, TX
His reasoning was because the decision to share data with SpotCrime was made with an old administration. The Chief and Mayor made an arbitrary decision to turn off access to public information.

When we asked again, the Chief said he and the Mayor’s office would allow the feed to be turned back on, their only ask being SpotCrime sign an indemnity agreement from the City of Irving

We work with hundreds, if not thousands, of police agencies nationwide. Irving is the only city to ask for an agreement in place before we can receive public crime information.

One response that we got from Irving is that they pay a vendor to provide this information to the public.

Not only is Irving paying for crime mapping, the vendor they use does not have a mobile app or mobile access. This means that approximately 60% of the population who uses a mobile device to access the internet can not view crime data in their Irving neighborhood.

Additionally, Chief Spivey and city administration informed us that SpotCrime would now be charged $71 a day for data. Previously, we were getting the data for free.

This means that Irving wants to charge SpotCrime $25,000/year for access to public information. This is a completely unreasonable charge and far exceeds our estimate of the actual cost incurred in accessing, duplicating, supplying, or searching for the requested records. See Irving’s breakdown of the charges here

With live in a digital age, the cost of making this data available is near zero. We have offered to pay up to $2,000 for the one time programming costs to get the data feed back online similar to the previous Irving administration. However, we do still believe any fee should be waived because making this data available benefits the public. And, it is important to note that the crime mapping vendor Irving uses gets the data for free.

For more background, you can view correspondence with Irving here.

Dereliction of duty

We have pointed out to Irving that the vendor is not open data. It does not allow the public or press to copy, collect, use or share the information.

Why would any modern police department allow a vendor they are paying to put restrictions on citizens and the press. How does limiting the ability to share help the public and reduce crime?

This is a dereliction of duty on the police and city’s behalf.

Allowing a preferential company better access to public information is not in the interest of transparency. It demonstrates an almost intentional priority to not be transparent with crime data. Doing this locks the data in a siloed and controlled environment that can’t be inspected, therefore, reducing accountability. There is inherent incongruity with the obscure explanation that a police department can filter the data for a vendor to report publicly, but can not filter for public access.

The solution for public good

Currently, we are still waiting for Irving to send over indemnity language and we are providing pushback on the charges. We have offered to pay a one time fee of up to $2,000 to create this programming, but Irving has not taken us up on this offer. And, we have started to FOIA the data from them.

The best solution is for Irving to deliver crime data openly for anyone to access, use, and share, like hundreds of agencies across the US are already doing

You can help!
If you feel the same way, please ask Chief Spivey and Mayor Stopfer to make Irving crime data open and available for anyone to access, use, and share. Let them know that you value transparency with crime data.

Chief Jeff Spivey
(972) 721-2598

Mayor Rick Stopfer

Safety begins with knowing

SpotCrime is the largest crime alerting system in the US. Including our partnerships with companies like Ring, Zillow, and Life360 as well as our mobile apps, we estimate we are getting crime information to more of the public than any other crime mapping vendor in the nation.

Our mission is to help reduce crime by quickly and clearly informing the public of crime events in their neighborhood. We do this without charging citizens or police agencies. And without claiming control over the public’s data.
