Tobson's Big ESC 2019 review, part 1      Comment   Translate Page
It is a bit quiet around this blog most of the year but suddenly spring is in the air and 40-something new Eurovision entries call my name and demand to be reviewed. Who am I to say no? Here we go with this year's 41 entries spread over seven blog posts.

Bulgaria and Ukraine are taking a year off (a particularly stupid move in Ukraine's case but let's get back to that, perhaps). This is how the first semi will begin!

01 CYPRUS
Tamta / Replay

Cyprus got closer to victory than ever before in 2018 and many words have been used by people wishing to declare how this year's Cypriot offering is nothing but a copy of last year's effort. Since they asked the same team for a new song it is pretty obvious they wanted to stay in the same area and in my book this is the better song of the two. Lively and updated but hardly alone in its genre this time.

Qualifier:
Absolutely, beyond the shadow of a doubt. A bit unexpected to kick off the first semi with a song as strong as this but the final is all the matters anyway.

My grade: 4/5

02 MONTENEGRO
D-Mol / Heaven

If there is any sort of consensus about anything this year, then it is how chanceless poor Montenegro is. So chanceless that it is, indeed, a bit cruel to underline this fact by giving them the real death slot in the running order. The six happy youngsters in D-Mol make me think of Aarzemnieki - Latvia's hopefuls in Copenhagen 2014 that made for pleasant company during three minutes but never really stood any chance of qualifying. I thoroughly enjoy this despite all its flaws - or perhaps even because of them - but if this one makes it to the final it would be a surprise big enough to stop time.

Qualifier:
Nope. Never in a million years.

My grade: 2/5

03 FINLAND
Darude feat Sebastian Rejman / Look Away

Sending Darude to Eurovision seemed like quite a nifty idea at first. "Sandstorm" might be his only major hit but it is fondly remembered by many people around the globe. People who could possibly be overwhelmed by nostalgia and vote for him. Unfortunately this entry is more Sebastian Rejman feat Darude than the other way around and the old hit-DJ finds himself relegated to being a mere special effect in his own entry, dancing around in the background like an embarrassing parent at a school disco. The song starts out pretty well only to turn almost shockingly dull before the chorus.

Qualifier:
Most unlikely. It really would be time for Finland to ditch the UMK concept that clearly isn't working and try to replace it with something more worthwhile.

My grade: 1/5

04 POLAND
Tulia / Fire of Love (Pali się)

This is the point where many a western european viewer might splutter out the drink they allowed themselves on a Tuesday night. White voice - a very special vocal technique reminiscent of a controlled scream - is a common feature in eastern folklore but will sound very exotic and unexpected to many others. Add a song that is remarkably similar to "I Am The Walrus" and suddenly you find yourself with a package that works and the initial shock is likely to turn into something else before three minutes have passed.

Qualifier:
Yes, I think so. This entry has the personality and originality that so many of the songs in the lineup desperately lack.

My grade: 3/5

05 SLOVENIA
Zala Kralj & Gašper Šantl / Sebi

Every year there is a song that really shouldn't do well based on what viewers usually like and yet defies all logic and scores well. This year, that surprise song should be this soft little whisper in Slovenian. A lovely and endearing little entry and the musical equivalent of a long, warm hug on a chilly day. Introverted but inviting at the same time.

Qualifier:
Yes. It must be or I will be terribly disappointed in everyone and everything.

My grade: 4/5

06 CZECH REPUBLIC
Lake Malawi / Friend Of A Friend

For the second year running, the Czech republic sends in a light, dance-friendly pop song performed by a cute guy who is potentially a bit of a douche, at least judging from the lyrics. This is far from universally acclaimed by the ESC fandom but what many of its detractors seem to forget is that this is one of few entries on offer this year that is light-hearted and effortless-sounding. Like a bunch of guys in a student band having the time of their lives. In a good way, not in a Manel Navarro sort of way.

Qualifier:
Yes. No need to worry about that.

My grade: 4/5

Quite a good start to the first semi, n'est-ce pas? If you want to agree or disagree with me, please leave a comment or send me a tweet. All the preview clips can be seen here.

One of the headmasters of this great label is Al-Maytatu L-Habithu, I spoke about him when I posted the fantastic tape qamat-is-saatu-unpronounceable  and for this post,  He wrote a very good compendium about their work/projects including interesting links.
Big thanks to Al-Maytatu L-Habithu for his astonishing contribution.
Enjoy this amazing label.

Debatable art

Is art just entertainment nowadays? When professional artists are making money creating products for entertainment it is show business. What about these so-called experimental forms of art?

Modernists (experimental) art in XX-XXI centuries is “debatable” art. We have all this noise music, 4’33’’ performances, Malevich black square. It is like a question without answers. Can be noise music? What the difference between music and noise? Is silent is music? Is it Art? Modern experimental art generates these questions. All we have is endless discussions about the purpose of art. Art raises questions but does not answer. We can say that all this experimental art stands in a nihilist position.

Early art forms (an art of Pre-Modern) are not just about entertainment. Purpose of art was to capture and convey (express) the ideas, images, feelings, and knowledge as reliable as possible. Poets created ballads about past events like wars and coronations. Painters made frescoes in cathedrals as an illustration of the Bible. Musicians were inspired by religious plots, folklore, and literature.

I think it is important to save this traditionalists message in the experimental field. Instead of producing ‘experiment’ just for ‘experiment’, and ‘noise’ just for ‘noise’.

United Information Space (UIS)

The term “information space” came to sociology and philosophy from technical disciplines.

“Information space is the set of concepts and relations among them held by an information system; it describes the range of possible values or meanings an entity can have under the given rules and circumstances”. (wiki)
An information space is a type of information design in which representations of information objects are situated in a principled space. In a principled space location and direction have meaning, so that mapping and navigation become possible.
— MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory

“Another definition (idealistic) is that the information space is the total results of the semantic activity of the humanity, "the world of names and titles", conjugated to the ontological world. Being a primary concept, the information space cannot be precisely defined and is set as a dialectical opposition to the material, physical, object space”. (wiki)
Information space surrounds us.
It is the results of the semantic activity of humanity. We can imagine it as an invisible network. It is a world of words and meanings. We are providing knowledge not just from our personal sensory experience but also via information communications. Patterns of our behaviour, our stereotypes, our thoughts are results of communication in so-called information space.

Information space can’t be viewed as an interrelated and indivisible whole. We can still see the difference between cultural levels and national characteristics of each region. But we will come to united information space in the future where all national, religious and cultural differences will disappear. (Maybe not…) Any way we can mourn the first consequences of globalization.

So “united information space” is the result of globalization, computerization and modernization. It is a futuristic idea.

 Music in information space.

Music is information. It provides the messages to attentive listeners. Will music transform into a cross-cultural form of art in upcoming united information space?

The problem of the development of rock music is blues clichés, beyond which an artist has no opportunity to go. At one time, these boundaries suspended the development of alternative rock music. Dance music (EDM) and pop music is only entertainment. And it follows the path of perfunctory development.

I think post-industrial music can be true alternative cross-cultural music, where spiritual aspects and ethnic music roots combine with high-tech innovations in sound. It is still true avant-garde modernists music – advanced guard of cross-cultural music of upcoming united information space. And we are proud to be a part of this movement.

UIS label history

The idea of UIS was born in summer 2009 and closely related with the activity of two Russian post-industrial projects [Qamat is-sa’atu] and Per Aspera.

Ixes (ex-member of [Qamat is-sa’atu], now in Per Aspera) dreamed to create brand new crossover post-industrial sound, which can be cross-cultural and based on a wide range of musical influences. He wanted to remove the stylistic limits and became free in musical expression.

His post-industrial project Per Aspera has its roots in so-called "schwarze szene" and rhythmic noise, but in fact, his music is a mix of different cultural influences. It is noted for high attention to rhythm, formalism, absurd and genre eclecticism that he calls UIS (United Information Space). His interpretation of the concept of "industrial music" is, first of all, freedom of choice for the realization of ideas. And this is the basic principle by which tracks were created.
The term UIS, which can be interpreted as United Information Space, means stylistic eclecticism and complete rejection of any genre limitations. Later, during the work with the project [Qamat is-sa atu], the term UIS acquired its second value is a non-commercial distribution of music in the different countries of the world.

Me (Al-Maytatu L-Habithu) and Ixes found UIS label in 2010. We start to produce compilations in cooperation with like-minded bands to express our ideas in information space.

/2010/ First release Geomatika [UIS-01] was a non-profit compilation which was attended by five post-industrial projects from Russia. The edition was a few numbers of CD-R. It was spread out in public places of Manila and Panglao island, Philippines.

/2013/ Abramacabra [UIS-02] was a non-profit tape release with single demo track. Per Aspera with the participation of [Qamat is-sa’atu] produced track dedicated to one of the most influential horror writer H.P.Lovecraft.

Unfortunately, we didn't finish the track in view of some problems, but anyway we published a number of demo tapes (about 15 cassettes) which were spread out in the streets of Providence, Rhode Island where Lovecraft lived and created his occult stories.

Edition was 50 audiocassettes C60 and about 10 copies CD-R. The part of the issue was spread out on the streets of Kingston, Montego Bay and in other cities of Jamaica.

/2014/ North Air [UIS-05] became the most integral in content and hard for distribution among all releases of UIS-community. Eight projects from Russia and Italy created dark ambient tracks, inspired by the literature of the Age of Discovery. An edition was 50 audiocassettes. Some part of the edition was left on islands of Polynesian state Samoa, where the famous writer Robert Louis Stevenson lived and worked. We dedicate this release to his immortal novel "Treasure Island".

/2014/ Grotesque [UIS-06] was conceived as eclectic and weird work. Compilation unites Russian and Belarusian artists of different music genres from post-industrial to experimental black metal. There were no specific idea or concept of this release. We just freaked out and had fun. The edition was 50 audiocassettes C90. Some tapes were left among the Gustov Vigeland's grotesque sculptures in Frogner Park in Oslo, Norway.

Mokṣa (Skt. मोक्ष) in Hinduism means ''breaking from chains of reincarnation and all the miseries of material existence''.

One of the main things these folks have in common is trade with Iraq. That requires mechanisms to be in place. What are mechanisms? Well they are tools for exchange purposes. As in a medium of exchange with currencies.

Just like we see between the UAE and Korea. Those two are doing Currency Swaps between themselves again apparently. Well the UAE is as Iraq is part of the GCC. The common denominator is going to be trade in goods and services and among many other things of importance.

All the tourists will need to exchange say Won when arriving into Dinar, just as those in Jordan, China, Japan, USA, GB, Canada, etc.. Iraq will need to make change in and out of the conversion process.

Therefor having mechanisms in place now is very important.

Especially when the exchange rate changes. They'll have plenty of the medium that is necessary to satisfy the trading, etc. imo That is for local trade, however, it is more in depth than that. They'll need another mechanism for the larger players electronically and that imo would be the FX.

Now we see that the USA is calling for Iraq to rely on herself. Well to do that they'll need to rely on the new strength that goes with internationalism.

Internationalism is at a true rate with hardy fundamentals, not a forced program rate from the past. Looks to me they were told time is up. So, I would then think that they are about to use the tools they have to finally do it.

On another note. I noticed a very interesting and lengthy theme on corruption on the last thread. A large amount for one day. Even where Tamimi was replaced, she being a Finance Minister. Go figure, Iran and or Maliki connection?

The fascinating thing is also that we here in the USA just witnessed where there were approximately 8 more indictments handed down on (effectively) corruption at high levels in our Gov.

I don't imagine that Washington telling Iraq it is time to rely on yourself, doesn't have anything to do with, "We did what we needed to do and we now have things in place, so it is time for you too, Iraq. " ~ MM Thus, all the files on corruption and even Tamimi going down imo is by no coincidence. imo Time will tell. ~ MM

"

"The GCC countries are keen to create consensus and agreement with Iraq on the environment and its health as a vital area, especially as Iraq is an important part of the region, in the presence of other countries, to develop a strategy to protect the environment and Iraq is ready to sign and implement what is agreed upon "He said.

The Iraqi ambassador stressed that "the fifth sector in this plan is the sports sector and youth," adding that "the two sides stressed the importance of activating Iraq's membership in the GCC system in this sector specifically, and work to integrate various types of sports in Iraq with their counterparts in the GCC countries , As well as to promote youth outreach on both sides. South Korea and UAE renew deal to swap currencies more than $ 5 billion for 3 years

13th April, 2019

South Korea's central bank said it had agreed to renew a currency swap agreement with the UAE to boost financial stability for both countries.

The $ 5.4 billion currency swap, first signed in 2013 and completed in October 2016, will be put into effect by April 2022, the Bank of Korea said in a statement, adding that talks to extend the deal had been postponed due to disagreements on regulatory issues.

South Korea has currency swap agreements totaling more than $ 132.8 billion with more than seven countries, including China, Canada and Switzerland. LINK

btw South Korea built a huge housing Project outside of Baghdad, don't think they don't have Dinars. Also, the IMF is talking about a new SDR currency. Now think about that. All those big names in the SDR baseket now most likely are holding Dinar.

If so, they are all going to get a big shot in the arm supporting their respective values of their currencies, just as the UAE may by being a part of the AMF basket, just as Iraq is..imo ~ MM

New generation of Cypriots seek to end island’s division in Nicosia’s ‘dead zone’      Comment   Translate Page
Greeks and Turks who grew up after the 1974 split have found common ground to plan a united future

There are few places more frozen in time than Nicosia’s UN-patrolled buffer zone. And in that space of barbed wire, sandbags and guard posts, there is no place that conjures division more than the Ledra Palace hotel.

What was once a magnet for Hollywood stars, the go-to establishment for Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, famed as much for its ballroom as its invention of the brandy sour, has come to symbolise the failure of countless peace envoys, diplomats and politicians to reunite Europe’s last divided capital.

Jenny Beth Martin, co-founder and national coordinator of Tea Party Patriots, told Breitbart News that the rallies were inspired by President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address, where he pledged, “America will never be a socialist country … ever.”

“That inspired us to do this,” Martin said.

But, Martin said, the event is about more than opposing the left’s agenda.

“The people taking part in the rallies are not just standing against socialism, but are also standing up for liberty and freedom,”

So many 'Patriots' are so utterly clueless about the topic upon which they bloviate.

'Patriots' do not accept welfare from The State.

'Patriots' do not work in professions that impose violations of Rightful Liberty upon their countrymen.

And the absurdity of the Tea Party holding 'rallies' on 'Tax Day' to protest 'Socialism' and oppressive government is beyond my ability to properly articulate.  The stunning failure to understand the reality in front of them is mind-boggling.

Socialism is not the problem.  Communism is not the problem.  Anarchy is not the problem.  Fascism is not the problem.  Racism is not the problem.

The problem is now and has always been with the -ist, not the -ism.

Social-ists are the problem.  Commun-ists are the problem.  Anarch-ists are the problem.

Don't fight the -ism - that is folly.

Extirpate the -ists - reduce the gene pool of the garbage.

No man or woman has ever died from an -ism.

Death is always at the hands of the -ists...

Thread: Kingdom of Heaven: The Crusader States 1097-1291:: Rules:: Naval Move without a Leader?      Comment   Translate Page

by Iskandir

I am playing the Seventh Crusade scenario. King Louis used a naval move to sail from friendly Cyprus to Egypt, taking 5 units with him (the allowed maximum). That leaves 3 leaderless units in Cyprus.

Can I use another naval move (given I play a '3' Strategy Card and the required roll is successful) to get these leaderless units to Egypt, too? Or has Poor Louis to sail back and forth to pick them up?
