Idaho post office named after baseball slugger Killebrew      Comment   Translate Page
A U.S. Post Office in a small western Idaho town has been named after National Baseball Hall of Fame slugger Harmon Killebrew.

Republican Gov. Brad Little and former Republican U.S. Rep. Raul Labrador took part in the ceremony Friday in Payette, about 60 miles (95 kilometers) northwest of Boise.

Killebrew was born there in 1936. He played 14 seasons with the Minnesota Twins, and for seven before that with the Washington Senators.

He hit 573 homeruns, led the American League in homeruns six times and played on 11 All-Star teams.

Shortly after Killebrew's death in 2011 at age 74, Labrador introduced a bill in Congress to rename the post office. It was signed into law in December.

Slideshow: Capital City Public Market Kicks Off its 25th Season      Comment   Translate Page
If you missed the opening day, don't worry—the market and its ever-rotating cast of over 100 local vendors will be back next week. The Capital City Public Market must have done some serious work to appease the rain gods, because it couldn't have asked for better weather for the opening day of its 25th season. Extended families, clusters of friends, moms pushing strollers and dozens of dogs came out in force to celebrate the market's April 13 opening in the spring sunshine. For the first time, many of those shoppers spilled out of the yellow "Market Bee" school bus, which ferries people between CCPM and the relocated Boise Farmers Market, dropping groups in front of Main Street Station every 15 minutes. "It's really nice that it's free, and it's convenient to get there and back if you live close to one of the two markets. They're far enough apart that it's not really worth it to walk," said Will Voytovich, who had walked to the BFM with a friend, then hopped the Market Bee into downtown to stroll through CCPM, where artists, prepared food vendors, farmers and more were selling to the throng. If you missed the first day of shopping, which ran from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., don't worry—the market and its ever-rotating cast of over 100 local vendors will be back next week. Meanwhile, check out some of our favorite shots from opening day below. …
Chris Tormey’s extended football coaching journey started with a beer and sandwich at Jack & Dan’s      Comment   Translate Page

MOSCOW, Idaho – Had life taken a different course, Chris Tormey’s athletic legacy would be bounded by the universe of Gonzaga Prep and Idaho Vandals fans in the early- and mid-1970s.

They would remember him as a Spokane high school standout and an All-Big Sky Conference linebacker, defensive end and team captain who persevered against a pair of serious knee injuries before spending a brief time in the Washington Redskins’ preseason camp in 1978.

Afforded a redshirt year by one of those injuries, Tormey took the opportunity to, as he said, “focus, become introspective. See what life was about outside of football.”

Following his tryout with the Redskins, Tormey was contemplating whether to pursue a career in teaching or business.

Then he got a phone call.

It set in motion events that led to an ongoing four-decade coaching career. It’s a ride that included being on the staff of the 1991 national champion University of Washington team, and head coaching stops at Idaho and Nevada.

In five successful years at his alma mater, Tormey completed a trifecta of defeating Boise State three times (the Vandals’ most recent victories in the series), toppling Washington State once (the first Idaho win against the Cougars in 34 years), and leading the Vandals to their first bowl win, against Southern Mississippi in the 1998 Humanitarian Bowl.

Coaching has expanded Tormey’s legacy to the point he is being inducted into the Idaho Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday in conjunction with the annual North Idaho Sports Banquet at the Coeur d’Alene Resort.

Sports is equal parts scores and stories. The scores establish the framework of a Hall of Fame career, but the stories give it color and texture. Tormey’s fateful phone call as he considered his future after his short time in the NFL is one such story. The call came from his former world history teacher, the Rev. Patrick Stewart, G-Prep’s chief administrator.

“He used to call me Mel,” Tormey said.

The disparity between a rangy linebacker and a rotund crooner (Mel Torme) with a similar last name apparently amused a Jesuit priest with a sharp wit he used to enlarge teenagers’ concept of the world while keeping them in line in the classroom.

“He said, ‘Mel, I understand you’re looking for employment, and you have your degree.’

“I said, ‘Yes, Father.’

“ ‘Are you quite sure about that?’

“ ‘Yes, Father.’

“ Then meet me at Jack & Dan’s at noon.’ ”

G-Prep had an unexpected opening for an assistant football coach and teacher.

“Over a red beer and a ham sandwich, (Stewart) offered me a job for $11,500,” Tormey said of his lunch that day at the iconic Spokane bar.

Two years teaching and coaching at his old high school convinced Tormey that football was his future. In 1980, he became a graduate assistant at Washington. After two years as a GA with Don James’ Husky teams, Tormey joined Dennis Erickson’s Idaho staff as a defensive line coach.

He returned to Washington in 1984. Over the next 11 years, he coached tight ends and linebackers, and was promoted to defensive coordinator when James resigned and Jim Lambright succeeded him.

His experience at Washington with James defined Tormey’s coaching strategy.

“Don James was at his zenith. He was disciplined, focused, intelligent,” Tormey said. “He ran his program like a CEO runs a large company. Everyone was held accountable. There were systems in place for everything. I decided if I ever became a head coach to incorporate as much of Coach James’ system as possible.”

Tormey got that opportunity when John L. Smith – a former housemate when Tormey and Smith were assistants with the Vandals – left as Idaho’s head coach for a similar job at Utah State.

Tormey sought James’ advice on whether he should return to Idaho for his first head coaching position. He said James told him, “If you think you can win, you’ve got to take this job.”

It was a consequential time for the Vandals. Under Erickson, Keith Gilbertson and Smith, they had established a 15-year reign as a perennial Big Sky championship and playoff contender. When Tormey took over in 1995, Idaho was playing its final season in the Big Sky Conference before making the ambitious move up to what is now the Football Bowl Subdivision.

“It was five of the best years of our lives,” Tormey said of his time in Moscow with his wife, Kellie, and daughters Leah and Emily.

“Our kids were kindergarten age. It was a special time for our family. A great time for our girls.”

An overall 32-23 record that included the 1998 Big West championship and Tormey being named the conference’s coach of the year resulted in interviews for head coaching jobs at UW and Oregon State.

In 2000, Tormey left Idaho for Nevada. The highlight of his four-year tenure with the Wolf Pack was a 28-17 victory against UW in Seattle.

Tormey returned to Washington as an assistant between 2004-08 before spending two years at Hawaii, a year at Washington State, and 1 1/2 seasons at Wyoming as defensive coordinator.

He was the head coach at South Whidbey High School in Langley, Washington, in 2014 before heading to the Canadian Football League as linebackers coach with Montreal in 2015.

Following a season with the Alouettes, he became linebackers coach for the BC Lions for three years. This season, he has the same position with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

At first glance, the series of jobs might seem like a desperate chase. But it amounts to tending a relationship that has been fundamental to Tormey since Stewart inquired about him looking for employment as a football coach.

It’s a relationship that includes many Idaho connections. Fellow Idaho Athletic Hall of Famer Carl Kilsgaard and longtime Spokane Vandals booster Norm Fredekind helped recruit Tormey to Idaho as a player. Don Matthews, a former Idaho player and CFL coach, was a Vandals assistant when he convinced the team to honor Tormey’s scholarship offer after Tormey was injured in high school.

John Yarno, Idaho’s All-America center, was a high school friend, Vandals teammate and fraternity brother. Former Idaho coaches Erickson, Gilbertson and Smith and former Vandals assistant and Hawaii head coach Greg McMackin have been in Tormey’s orbit for decades. He has stories about them all.

“You come together with people you would not ordinarily know or associate with,” Tormey said. “You create friendships that last a lifetime.

“Football has been my livelihood. It’s part of my DNA, my life fabric. The last 52 years have always been about the next season, the next game. I’ve been lucky to have that.”

Grip on Sports: Golf has changed its look over the years and that's a good thing      Comment   Translate Page

A GRIP ON SPORTS • Most professional football players don’t look like average folks. Neither do professional basketball players. Or, even, folks in the major leagues. But pro golfers. Now that’s an eclectic group. Read on.

••••••••••

• Golf once was the purview of the rich and, well, rich. Still is, for the most part, though the non-country-club crowd has taken over the sport in the play-for-fun ranks.

It’s at the top level where egalitarianism has really taken over, though. At least outwardly.

The thought expressed above hit me yesterday afternoon as I watched the final hours of the Masters’ first day.

The guys on top were a diverse-looking group. Oh sure, white Americans still dominate, even decades after Tiger Woods changed the face of golf, but we’re talking body types here. Just about any boy (or girl, for that matter) can become a successful golfer. You don’t have to be 6-foot-4 or really fast or really well built. All athletic builds, all body types, all everything are welcome.

Not everyone can look like Brooks Koepka, sure. He seems more suited to playing outside linebacker for the Jets than hitting a wedge shot to 3-feet, but his physique, as admirable as it is, is not the only one needed to be atop the leaderboard.

(As an aside, Koepka, who went to bed tied atop the leaderboard after shooting a 66, has won three of the last six majors he’s been physically capable of playing. That’s Tiger-like, for sure, but don’t give me this baloney about being underappreciated. He’s so “underappreciated,” Jim Nantz spent a half-hour or so talking about how no one ever talks about him.)

Bryson DeChambeau is tied with Koepka and he doesn’t look as if he could be the Jets’ ticket guy, let alone play pro football. He actually looks – and talks – like a guy the Dodgers would hire to figure out the co-efficiency of spin rate and how it relates to left-handed hitters. And his swing looks like the one Uncle George used to use when playing back in 1966. It’s just a bit more successful.

Phil Mickelson is also near the top of the leaderboard and though his swing is smoother, he just looks like Uncle George, if Uncle George was related to one of the Walt Disney cartoon characters. C’mon, admit it. Phil has always sort of reminded you of Goofy, but in a nice way. He seems like a fun guy who would say “aw, shucks” a lot.

Appearances, as they say, can be deceiving. Phil is known as a gambler’s gambler – as well as having a competitive streak as wide as the second fairway. He may not look all that athletic – outwardly he seems best suited to run the Jets’ P.R. department – but he is.

However, there was one player near the lead yesterday that reflected my build more than any other.

Kiradech Aphibarnrat is 5-foot-8. He weighs, well, more than he probably should. (Who among us doesn’t feel that way ?) And he hits the golf ball a long ways. And accurately. He’s from Thailand, but he seems a lot like the guy you played with last weekend at Downriver. Except, you know, he actually hits greens and makes putts.

He’s won four European tournaments in his career. He’s been a fixture in majors recently. And he shot a 3-under 69 at Augusta yesterday. All the while looking more like Engelberg from The Bad News Bears than, well, Brooks Koepka.

And that’s what so impressive about golf at the highest level.

Koepka is a chiseled 6-foot, 190 pounds. Mickelson is a softer 6-3. DeChambeau fits in somewhere between. But size really doesn’t matter on the course. Francesco Molinari, who won the British Open last year, is 5-8 and less than 160, but he can shoot under par as easily as a guy who towers over him.

When I was young, my dad watched me run and told me, if I ever wanted to be a professional baseball player, I would have to be a catcher. That’s the only spot someone as slow as I was could have a chance.

He was wrong. There was no position that I was suited to play. Golf, on the other hand, doesn’t care if you can run a sub-5 40. Or can lift a Ponderosa pine over your head. It’s about making a little round ball go where you want it to, consistently. Just about anyone, of any build, can work hard enough to be successful at it.

The leaderboard yesterday at Augusta drove that point home like one of Koepka’s 5-irons.

WSU: After a few days of quiet in Pullman (except for the weather), it poured news Thursday. Theo has stories ranging from basketball – one of Ernie Kent’s recruits decided he didn’t want to play for Kyle Smith – to football recruiting – an Arizona high school offensive lineman committed – to spring football practice – the Rush linebacker spot seems to have been claimed. … He also has videos from after practice, from Mike Leach to Eric Mele, from players Ron Stone Jr. to Kassidy Woods. … Elsewhere in the Pac-12 football, Washington has quite a few openings to fill in its secondary. … Arizona seemingly has filled a spot there. … Oregon’s newest receiver has a lot of experience. … UCLA’s spring game looms after 11 practices. … A grad transfer should help Utah’s defense. … Colorado's kicking game should be fine. … The conference’s basketball prospects will have to overcome the loss of Stanford’s best player to the pro ranks. … Utah is losing an assistant coach. … Arizona will too, but because it wants to. … Not only is Bobby Hurley probably not leaving for St. John’s, he may sign an extension. … Mick Cronin is learning his way around UCLA. … Washington should still be a contender next season.

Gonzaga: The Zags are in the transfer market again and are one of seven schools under consideration for shooting guard David Jenkins Jr. Jim Meehan has more in this story. … Zykera Rice has been invited to the Seattle Storm’s training camp. … Around the WCC, not only is new BYU coach Mark Pope looking at his former assistants, he may pick up a transfer from his old school.

Idaho: There were a lot of women who played sports collegiately before Title IX tried to even the playing field (my older sister pitched at UCLA in the mid-1960s, when the Bruins played junior colleges more often than not). John Blanchette has the story of one swimmer, Nancy Monroe, who came to Moscow not knowing what she was getting into but left a Hall of Famer. Or will be soon.

CCS: The Sasquatch have a pitcher who will be a trailblazer for Boise State. Ryan Collingwood has more on Reed Harrington in this college baseball notebook.

Chiefs: Eli Zummack has been on fire for Spokane. Dan Thompson introduces you to the 18-year-old who has helped the Chiefs win one series and lead 3-0 in the next.

Preps: Another busy day in the high school sports world, with roundups from softball, tennis, baseball and soccer. … Dave Nichols chats with Larry Weir for the Press Box pod.

Mariners: The M's have homered in all 15 games this season, a Major League record. They are 13-2, which is unexpected, just like yesterday's 7-6 win at Kansas City. And they seem to be having fun. … Gene Warnick has his Out of Right Field summary of the victory.

•••

• Golf isn’t for everyone, that’s for sure. It’s hard for an inner-city kid to be introduced to the sport let alone find a place to practice. But once on the course, it’s pretty simple. If you are better at it than your peers, you play and you win. The golf ball doesn’t know who hit it. Doesn’t care. That’s one of the beauties of the sport. Until later …

Oscar Meyer Weiner Song by Spud City, "Music With a Peel"      Comment   Translate Page

Oscar Meyer Weiner Song by Spud City, "Music With a Peel,"  -University of Lowell concert, 1978 (Steve Hoeft/guitar, Bruce Kerr/guitar, Mickey Marins,/bass, & Tyke Ten Eyck/drums.

This is how our rock road band in New England in 1978 opened our shows. For this concert, we played about 12 original songs after this opener. Big stage for us since most of our 4-5 gigs a week those years were clubs, college pubs, bars, ski lodges. But once in a while, a concert like this one came along where, instead of 4 x 45 min. sets including covers, we did an all-original show of songs written by "Loose Bruce" Kerr.

We had a band house in rural northern Massachusetts up on the New Hampshire border, about an hour out of Boston. In those days, around 3 to 5pm, 4-5 times a week, 3 cars loaded with gear would launch down that 1/4 mile driveway (if snow allowed) to drive an hour to 4 hours away in Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut or Mass.

In the big snowstorm of '78, we were snowed in at that house for a week, lost a lot of gigs & money, but we made up for it over the following months.

Alas, all bands dis-band (yes, I said it) and dis band did no differently. In 1979 we went back down to Steve & I as a duo, then we split in January, 1980, Steve moved to Boise, Idaho and started various bands. Bruce went to St. Thomas, in the US Virgin Islands to go solo for the next 12 years there and in California. Tyke ended up in Florida, Mickey in southern California, Bruce in northern California, and Steve in Idaho.

Murat’s Army - The Army of the Kingdom of Naples 1806-1815, Digby Smith      Comment   Translate Page
A very pretty book, based on the paintings of Henri Boiselier, produced in the first half of the 20th Century. The book is dominated by full colour, full page reproductions of his illustrations of the many and varied uniforms worn in Murat’s small and not terribly effective army of Naples. Each comes with a brief caption that explains what we are looking at, and any errors in the original painting (normally fairly trivial).

NRA has history of advising gun-rights groups outside US

BOISE, Idaho (AP) - Recent revelations that National Rifle Association representatives met with Australian politicians to discuss talking points after a mass shooting isn't the first time the NRA has exerted its influence on gun debates outside the U.S.

The lobbying group has sought sway at the United Nations to make it easier to sell American guns overseas. It has on more than one occasion advised gun-rights groups in Brazil, Canada, Australia and elsewhere.

It even advised gun-rights activists in Russia, entanglements that in recent years made the NRA vulnerable to allegations it allowed alleged Russian operatives to use the organization to influence American politics.

The group's track record of aggressively shaping the debate has turned it into the go-to group for other gun-rights activists outside the U.S.
