"it is possible to spoof the sensor using nothing but a photograph of a fingerprint and a 3D printer, throwing the promise of better security out the window." I wouldn't go that far. You do need the software trickery to build a useful 3D model of that photo of a 2D print and then a 3D printer. You can't just simply copy the finger tip either it has to be printed on semi clear plastic thin enough so the sensor can still detect blood flow. It was much easier to spoof the older finger print sensors and easier still to point the phone at someone's face to beat Face ID. This is indeed a more secure version of biometrics and that it's under the display makes it very convenient as well.

Makerspace for Little or Nothing
You don't have to spend thousands of dollars to start a Makerspace area. You don't have to have a designated room or rip out bookcases. You can even have a Makerspace on a cart! When we have testing in our Library, I put all our Makerspace stuff on an AV cart and roll it into our server room.  This post evolved from a previous post called Makerspace Starter Kit Updated where I had some of these idea, but I felt that it deserved it's own expanded post.

You can take baby steps into the Maker Movement.  I've been saying that for 7 years or so....long before I blogged about it, I tried it out. Yeah, sometimes I try things on the sly to see if they are blogworthy for you! Now....having said that.....

WARNING: Controversial Opinion Ahead. 
I'm not 100% sold, even after 7 years of talking about the Maker Movement, that it's something that's here to stay and not just a fad. Even though I've (without knowing it!) been using aspects of the movement since we opened our school in 1997, what if it's a flash in the pan? Back then we used Hollywood High, Specular Logo Motion, Hyper Studio, and we created a daily LIVE TV Studio news show!  But what if we spend thousands of dollars on 3D printers, robotics, and other ephemera and it just ends up collecting dust? What if we DO make huge architectural changes in our schools and we can't go back? What if it's like the $10,000 interactive SMART boards that are now just used as white boards? That's why I've intentionally NOT spent a lot of money on our Maker corner. This post is about creating a Makerspace with little or no money. 

A Makerspace is what you make of it! Big or small, lavish or little, it's all about the maker mindset.  Be creative! Be crafty! Ask your kids what they want and brainstorm how to bring it to the school! Ask for donations. Ask for help. Don't worry if it's not perfect at first or if you fail.

TP & Paper Towel Building Blocks
Collect toilet and paper towel rolls, heck - have the whole school collect them! Say you're trying for 50 or 100 - put a decorated cardboard box outside your Library or Classroom for donations!

Make sure to Tweet, IG out, or add the request to your staff & community newsletter! But be careful, you could get an AVALANCHE of materials!

Then cut them into different lengths, have the kiddos paint them with water based paints and notch them with scissors -- then let kids build with them! Store them in milk crates or bins. Voila!

I've heard lately, that some people don't like this idea because they're concerned about germs. I guess TP rolls & airborne germs? I'm kind of a germophobe, and I didn't even think about that! Sheesh. How about lightly spraying all the cardboard rolls with Lysol? OR..how about using paper towel rolls cut into different lengths?  More! Cardboard Tube STEM Activities and more!  This is a Mommy blog that has lots of great STEM ideas! W00t!
Origami Makerspace Pinterest Board. 
Gather some origami books (I have like at least 10) paper of all kinds, safety scissors, and Voila! Kids love folding paper and even though I'm not patient enough to do this myself, many of my kiddos are amazing at Origami!

LEGOS for Nothing.

My lovely wonderful Library Media assistant took them home over the weekend and put them all in a bucket with a bleach solution & dried them in the sunshine. Voila! Just like new!

Ask your PTA, ask your kids, have a LEGO donation bucket by the door of your Library Media Center or classroom and check out yard sales and thrift shops. Bleach is amazing and cheap. Go for it!

Cardboard Creature Challenge

Tech Take-Apart Robot Challenge
Tech take-apart is a classic makerspace activity. This design challenge takes it a step further by recycling the technology into a robot made by students. This project doesn’t have to be super complex — picture a shoebox painted with black paint that has keyboard keys and circuit boards glued to it. (link below - I promise!)

Recycled Book Art Gallery  
Our Art Teacher does this and we always love to provide gallery and brainstorming space! Maybe she gets some of our weeded books OR maybe she uses donated books from the kids and

the community. I can't speak to that here... my supervisor might see this! Here's what Diana has to say about this! 

"We all have damaged or out-of-date books that we’ve weeded from our library. Instead of tossing them out, why not transform them into recycled art? Browse Pinterest or check out some of the recommended resources below to gather inspiration for students. Provide students with a variety of arts and crafts supplies, including glue, tape, paint, scissors, glitter, etc. Teach the students about what an artist’s statement is, and have them write one up once their project is done. Then create a gallery of all the students’ projects in the library and invite classes to visit for a gallery walk. This is a great way to introduce students to the world of professional art and a fantastic way to recognize their work.  Design prompt: Working alone or in pairs, transform a used book into a work of art. You can use any arts and crafts materials, including paint, scissors, glue, tape, etc. Write an artist’s statement explaining how you came up with your idea and how you created your art. You will have one week to complete the project. All of the book art will be displayed with artists’ statements in a gallery in the library. "

Don't forget that video production, animation, green screen, blue screen, TV studio, coding, programming, any collaborating with Tech Ed or a Science class and so many other amazing things can make your school Makerspace program shine! Make sure to bring in other subject areas. Make your Library a great space to display artwork. I'm a big advocate of STEAM rather than STEM. Think about gallery openings and gallery walks!
Do NOT let the expense, mess, trouble, or obstacles stop you from doing this!  Be the innovator and the spark in your school or district.  I know you can be AWESOME!

          Blocking ads before they enter your house at the DNS level with pi-hole and a cheap Raspberry Pi      Comment   Translate Page

Lots of folks ask me about Raspberry Pis. How many I have, what I use them for. At last count there's at least 22 Raspberry Pis in use in our house.

A Pi-hole is a Raspbery Pi appliance that takes the form of an DNS blocker at the network level. You image a Pi, set up your network to use that Pi as a DNS server and maybe white-list a few sites when things don't work.

I was initially skeptical, but I'm giving it a try. It doesn't process all network traffic, it's a DNS hop on the way out that intercepts DNS requests for known problematic sites and serves back nothing.

Installation is trivial if you just run unread and untrusted code from the 'net ;)

Otherwise, follow their instructions and download the installer, study it, and run it.

I put my pi-hole installation on the metal, but there's also a very nice Docker Pi-hole setup if you prefer that. You can even go further, if, like me, you have Synology NAS which can also run Docker, which can in turn run a Pi-hole.

Within the admin interface you can tail the logs for the entire network, which is also amazing to see. You think you know what's talking to the internet from your house - you don't. Everything is logged and listed. After installing the Pi-hole roughly 18% of the DNS queries heading out of my house were blocked. At one point over 23% were blocked. Oy.

NOTE: If you're using an Amplifi HD or any "clever" router, you'll want to change the setting "Bypass DNS cache" otherwise the Amplifi will still remain the DNS lookup of choice on your network. This setting will also confuse the Pi-hole and you'll end up with just one "client" of the Pi-hole - the router itself.

For me it's less about advertising - especially on small blogs or news sites I want to support - it's about just obnoxious tracking cookies and JavaScript. I'm going to keep using Pi-hole for a few months and see how it goes. Do be aware that some things WILL break. Could be a kid's iPhone free-to-play game that won't work unless it can download an add, could be your company's VPN. You'll need to log into http://pi.hole/admin (make sure you save your password when you first install, and you can only change it at the SSH command line with "pihole -a -p") and sometimes disable it for a few minutes to test, then whitelist certain domains. I suspect after a few weeks I'll have it nicely dialed in.

THE TECHNOLOGY: 


NASA is developing a lightweight one-piece regeneratively-cooled thrust chamber assembly (TCA) for liquid rocket engines. Liquid rocket engines create thrust through the expansion of combusted propellants within the TCA. Standard manufacturing of TCAs involves individually building the injector, main combustion chamber and nozzle, and then bolting or welding the components together at the joints. However, potential seal failures in these complex joints can cause catastrophic explosions, as in the tragedy of the Space Shuttle Challenger.  NASA researchers are eliminating complex joints by manufacturing a 1-piece TCA utilizing 3D printing and large-scale additive manufacturing technologies to directly deposit the nozzle onto the combustion chamber. And, by replacing a traditional solid metal jacket with a composite overwrap for support, the overall weight is reduced by over 40%. Developed under the Rapid Analysis and Manufacturing Propulsion Technology (RAMPT) project, NASA seeks public-private partnerships to develop specialized large-scale additive manufacturing vendors and accelerate reliable spaceflight hardware to the US supply chain.

Models are designed for 28mm miniatures, but might be re-scaled to fit your game or diorama.

All of the tiles are stored vertically in holders. These are fairly simple.


Money, meeples and VP chits are stored in boxes with sliding tops to prevent opening in the box. The VP and Meeples are stored by player count. open the right number of spots and you are all ready to go.


The Tech tiles (except cost 9 items) have ready to play trays. single tiles slide out as is or you can remove the side walls for easy access during setup.


Lastly we have the resources. these stack nicely for storage in the box. 2 high goes right to the top of the cardboard insert or you can stack all 4 high to go right to the top of the box.

Our prints are made to order, and are made here in the United States. We are based out of Orlando Florida and we 3D printed in PLA. PLA is a biodegradable plastic derived from renewable resources such as corn starch, tapioca roots, and sugarcane.

Here at Dips and Prints, we select the right plastic for each product and carefully dial in our machine settings to get you the best quality we can. The technology of 3D printing is amazing, but it's not perfect! To work, 3D printers lay down extruded plastic in thin precise layers which creates a texture called “layer grain” in parallel to the face it was printed on. With 3D printing each model is printed layer by layer one after another. Due to this technique there may minor imperfection with the printing of the models making each one unique. Our prints are made to order, and are made here in the United States. We are based out of Orlando Florida and we 3D print Using PLA Filament. PLA is a biodegradable plastic derived from renewable resources such as corn starch, tapioca roots, and sugarcane.

Additionally, just like working with a hot glue gun, 3D prints may have some very mild stringing (appears like stray spider threads) that we missed when cleaning the print. We're sorry if we missed them!

Tillandsia Ionantha Guat:
This small air plant is fun and easy to grow. Display your Tillandsia Ionantha Guat in our hanging sloths. The leaves get a beautiful blush of pink when it is exposed to bright, indirect light.

Your plants will stay fresh in the box during shipping and another 3-5 days after they arrive. But it’s always good to take your plants out of the box as soon as they arrive in the mail. These are live plants and they need light and water.

Air plant care instructions:
Air plants are very easy to care for. Take your plant out of the box as soon as your package arrives.

+ Water +
Soak your air plants once a week in a bowl of water for 30 minutes each time. You can also mist your plant with a spray bottle 2-3 times a week if it needs more water between the soakings. Air plants absorb water through their leaves instead of roots. So flip them upside-down when you give them a bath. Gently shake off any excessive water after each watering. Place your air plants somewhere with good air circulation to dry them completely within 4 hours of watering. MAKE SURE your plants dry completely within 4 hours or they may develop root rot. Do not put them under the sun or near heaters/AC units as intense heat and cold temperature can damage the plants.

+ Light +
Air plants like bright, indirect light. Display your air plants somewhere near the window where they can get some indirect light during the day. If you don't have natural sunlight coming in, office fluorescent lighting would do the job too. Just avoid direct sunlight since the plant can get burnt.

+ Air +
Air plants do best in warm environments between 50 - 90 F. They love good air circulation and some humidity as well.

Bringing an object from the digital world into the physical world is a pretty addicting experience. The only limit is your imagination when it comes to making pieces that are useful and fun. I’ve had a few items printed from online companies like Shapeways, but wanted to jump into the world of 3D printing on my own.

Monoprice is well-known for affordable electronics, and their 3D printer line definitely has some reasonable options. Their entry-level 3D printers start with the Monoprice MP Mini Delta 3D Printer at $159, but today we’re taking a look at the top of the line Maker Ultimate, priced at $479. Let’s get it setup and see how our first print goes. We’re going to go through the setup fairly quickly as it follows along with the manual pretty closely, but I’ll throw in some tips and troubleshooting I figured out along the way. It seems like a good product for the price, but there are some fit and finish things that are a bit off. Check out the video below.

Yeah pretty much the same report. Home all crashes the hot end into the build plate. The 3D printed parts are warped. Pretty much a waste of money. There are way better printers out there for the money. I would avoid this printer, you are just going to get ripped off. Zero stars if I could. Wish I could get a refund but good luck with that.

With great excitement, I received mine yesterday. However, it took only 15-20 mintues for great disappointment to begin: THE MACHINE IS VERY POORLY DESIGNED-- - Resistive touch screen (15+ year old technology) so one has to really press hard to make it work. Not capacitive like smartphones which are easy to swipe and touch. - Extremely buggy and poorly designed firmware: After a firmware update, the machine could not self-reboot even though the screen said "Please wait... rebooting" (I waited 20 minutes after firmware update was complete!) - Extremely loud exit fan - This fan keeps running all the time even while the printer is idling. They could not add an electronic switch to turn on the fan when it started printing! - Now, the machine has connectivity problems so it keeps saying, "Please turn off and turn on after waiting 15 seconds." But each time I do that, it fails to connect to the network and there is no way to check or change connectivity options because no other choice is given on the screen! Basically a locked out unit! The unit is going back to the seller, with not even the filament loaded even once. I am a senior systems designer with 25+ years experience in hardware, control systems firmware, .. and such starting symptoms makes me feel like the rest of the software would be just as immature and buggy as the above. 3D printer firmware is very easy to design and it is shocking what a dumb job they've done. I was skeptical that a camera company that could not produce good digital cameras might not make its first 3D printer correctly but I took a chance. Now I realize I shouldn't have. Save your time and money folks, don't beautiful-looking crap.

Bobby Haas, Bryan Fuller and Nick Pugh are all to be commended on this bike. However; The unsung hero with this bike is Nick Pugh the man responsible for the 3D aluminum printing. 3D Metal printing will and is going to change the fabricating for all designers in every field.

I was able to view this bike several weeks ago at the Haas Museum (A must See Museum). It is simply stunning with detail and technology. Fortunately yesterday at the Handbuilt show builders forum I got to meet and talk to all three. All three are beyond humble and are great people. But to listen to Nick Pugh and the excitement he had with this technology was infectious. He is not necessarily a motorcycle guy but a man with the brains to execute the technology and get the results needed to push this bike to the next level. The Handle bars, the Swing arm and other 3D printed pieces were simply beyond compare.

Michaelangelo had the Medici Family. The custom builder motorcycle World has Mr Haas. Yesterday at the Handbuilt builders forum there were several builders and all are featured at the Haas Museum and all are worthy. Craig Rodsmith, Walt Seigl, Sofi Tsingos, Bryan Fuller, Alan Stulberg, The Haas Museum is a must see for any gear head and will change your view on the concept of custom motorcycles. I simply use to view custom bikes with the regard that function had to lead form. But once you realize that these bikes at the HAAS are more than that, they become art.

The Handbuilt show is always a good time and meeting young up and coming builders and listening to their enthusiasm is uplifting. Like young builder AVA Wolff. Her first build was featured and it was tasteful and simple Yamaha but the excitement she had will lead her to greater builds. The best part was watching my 16 year old son taking this all in and watching the gears in his head turn.
