Selenite-blogging,

essay 2 of 5 blog entries

Part One:  Insectoids Everywhere!

“The moon is, indeed, a sort of vast ant-hill…”
The First Men in the Moon
By H. G. Wells

In his 1901 science fiction novel The First Men in the Moon, H. G. Wells repeatedly describes the moon’s Selenite inhabitants as insect-like:
“He (the Selenite) presented himself, therefore, as a compact, bristling creature, having much the quality of a complicated insect…”

For his 1964 movie of First Men in the Moon, visual effects master Ray Harryhausen designed remarkable models of insect-like Selenites to bring to life through his inimitable stop motion animation.  While departing from Wells in some particulars, they retain the weird half-human/half-arthropod weirdness in Wells’ descriptions:
“The neck on which the head was poised was jointed in three places, almost like the short joints in the leg of a crab.”

A Selenite Gallery:  Profile, rear (with termite wings), and full frontal.

Inspecting the insectoid
alien remains from
Quatermass and the Pit.
Both Ray Harryhausen and screenwriter Nigel Kneale were fans of the science fiction novels of H. G. Wells.  The concept of upright insectoids in The First Men in the Moon appears to have particularly appealed to them.  Several years before First Men in the Moon, Kneale placed an eerie insectoid alien invasion at the center of the plot of his TV series classic Quatermass and the Pit, first broadcast in 1958.

Near the end of his career, Harryhausen cribbed from his Selenite design to create a trio of insectoid ghouls, complete with little horns reminiscent of the demon insects of Quatermass and the Pit.  Designed for Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger (1977), the ghouls are skeletal rather than segmented, but the faces possess a familiar creepy insect-like impassivity, like animated mantises.

The insectoid ghouls from Harryhausen's
Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger.

Intelligent alien insects remain a popular subject in science fiction, turning up everywhere from Star Trek to Starship Troopers.  H. G. Wells basically invented the trope, as he also appears to have been the first to play with an alien hive concept, where intelligence is centralized in a highly ordered society.  This probably relates in some way to the socialism that Wells later advocated, but as of 1901, it’s easier to see the lunar society as a satire of political ideas rather than either a utopia or a dystopia.  The scientist Cavor is content to live in the moon’s great ant-hill but the prospect appears to have much less appeal to the other two humans along for the trip.

Cavor (Lionel Jeffries) surrounded by Selenites in First Men in the Moon.

Part Two:  The Resurrected Skeleton

Here’s Martha Hyer as Kate Callender receiving a full body scan from Lunar Homeland Security.

Martha Hyer gets x-rayed in First Men in the Moon.

Martha Hyer.
For this First Men in the Moon scene, Hyer’s body double was a warrior skeleton model left over from Jason and the Argonauts, pulled off the shelf by master animator Ray Harryhausen.  The shot opens with Hyer fully exposed in naked skeleton mode, making demands to her interrogators as they study her bones.  Then she leaves the scanner area and emerges screen left with her skin and clothes neatly in place.

Whoever would have guessed that Martha Hyer had the frame of a Greek warrior?

And… retroactively applying logic… wouldn’t this suggest that we can see Hyer—that ever-dependable chameleon of an actress—among the skeleton defenders of the Golden Fleece?

Why, I’d recognize that skeleton anywhere!

I think that's Hyer's skeletal frame second from left.

Hyer gracefully parries a sword thrust.

She's a little more graceful than the other skeletons, don't you think?
Personally, I'm rooting for Hyer.

This is how Greek tragedy inevitably ends.

It just goes to show that we’re all the same under the skin.

Enjoy the video!

X-rays and MRIs can be very effective ways to detect breast cancer in its early stages, but given the commonness of the disease scientists are always looking at ways to improve diagnostic methods any way they can. Researchers in Vienna are making some promising progress in this area, developing a new method that revolves around a waistcoat packed with flexible radio frequency coils.

Whoopi Goldberg announces near-death battle with pneumonia, sepsis: What you should know      Cache   Translate Page

Lou Rocco/ABCDR. LEILA HAGHIGHAT

(CHICAGO) -- Whoopi Goldberg announced on Friday that she had been absent from co-hosting “The View” because she had been dealing with pneumonia and sepsis, saying that the two illnesses nearly killed her.

“I am here. I am up and moving around. Not as fast as I’d like to be, but I am OK. I’m not dead,” Goldberg, who last appeared on “The View” on Feb. 5, said in a message recorded for the show. “I came very, very close to leaving the Earth. Good news: I didn’t.”

Pneumonia and sepsis are two illnesses that can get pretty serious. Here’s what you should know about them.

Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs that ranges in severity.

In the United States, pneumonia is the most common cause of hospital admission aside from women delivering children. In 2013, pneumonia was responsible for 960,000 hospital stays and nearly 60,000 deaths that year. The illness is now the eighth leading cause of death.

The severity of the lung infection depends on what’s causing it and who is affected by it. Pneumonia can be caused by a wide variety of bacteria, fungi or viruses, which enter the lungs from the air we breathe. A single organism can account for as many as 10 percent of cases, the most common being a bacteria called Streptococcus pneumoniae. Influenza, also known simply as the flu, has the potential to cause pneumonia, too.

A weaker immune system raises the risk of getting a serious case of pneumonia. At-risk groups are considered to those who are young, such as children, the elderly and those who have compromised immune systems.

Symptoms of pneumonia include fever, shortness of breath and cough. Doctors who suspect their patients have pneumonia will often order blood tests and a chest X-ray to look for other signs of infection. However, not all pneumonias require hospitalization. Mild pneumonias can be treated in as little as five days with antibiotics.

Doctors may ask patients to stay in the hospital for closer monitoring in cases where pneumonia doesn’t improve or where it began as severe.

Survival from pneumonia has improved significantly over time. But death rates still range from as low as 3 percent in those who are treated outside of the hospital to 50 percent in those who require care in a hospital’s intensive care unit. For some people with pneumonia, recovery can take up to six to eight weeks.

Complications from pneumonia can make it a much more serious problem.

There are several complications that can make pneumonia a bigger problem. Pleural effusion, which is sometimes called “water in the lungs,” occurs when fluid accumulates just outside the area of the lung where the infection is located. The fluid can sometimes turn into pus, too. If it doesn’t improve on its own or with antibiotics, the fluid may have to be drained with a needle in a bedside procedure called thoracentesis.

Severe pneumonia and pleural effusions may block the transfer of oxygen from the air we breathe into our blood. When respiratory failure like this develops, doctors will likely have to intubate the patient, which requires placing a breathing tube down their throat and connecting it to a breathing machine. This allows doctors to control the patient’s breathing.

Sepsis is severe complication of pneumonia that worsens a patient’s outlook.

Sepsis is preceded by a condition known as bacteremia, which occurs when the organisms that cause pneumonia spread into the blood. People who develop bacteremia should go to a hospital immediately to receive intravenous antibiotics. If the bacteremia worsens to the point where vital signs are affected — blood pressure drops, heart rate goes up, breathing rate increases, fevers rise and blood oxygen levels drop — then they’re considered to have sepsis.

It’s worth noting that sepsis can develop from any kind of infection, not just pneumonia. However, pneumonia is the leading cause of sepsis. It’s a big deal because sepsis is more likely to lead to a worse outcome; mortality rates from sepsis can be as high as 15 percent.

There are steps you can take to prevent pneumonia.

Because the elderly are especially vulnerable to pneumonia, it’s recommended that everyone receive pneumonia vaccinations at the age of 65. There are two types of pneumonia vaccines — Pneumovax and Prevnar. Each contains bits of different strains of bacteria that cause pneumonia, allowing the body to develop antibodies and therefore immunity to fend off any future infection. Studies show that 69 percent of elderly people who are eligible to receive the vaccine don’t. Other at-risk groups should get vaccinated even earlier, including smokers, diabetics, alcoholics and people with compromised immune systems.

Other preventive measures people could take include receiving an annual flu vaccine and quitting smoking.

In high-risk people, pneumonia can develop into something serious and potentially fatal. But more commonly, it is easily treatable and patients’ outlooks are good. Talk to your doctor to make sure you are up to date with your pneumonia vaccinations if you are part of an at-risk group or over the age of 65.

Home....at least for a few days, hoping for more!      Cache   Translate Page
We are home!!!  I must say that by the time we made it home late Saturday afternoon I was exhausted.  So it was decided that being in the hospital would not get us anywhere over the next couple of days because Dr. E wants to see Kaidence have a few days to get a little better from the pneumonia before she considers putting her on Milrinone.  So home we are....for now. She is on extra lasix as well as tube feeds:( We have clinic on Tuesday. If her symptoms still lean towards heart failure becoming worse she may be admitted to the CICU to start the Milrinone and then hopefully moved to the floor a day or so later. So we are home, hanging out and enjoying this time as much as we can...just in case!

Also it was discussed that if a heart offer became available that we would have to pass it up due to how bad her pneumonia was.  Her cardio wants to be sure her lungs have healed before she is thrown on bypass.  She would prefer waiting 2 weeks before a heart comes but may take one with only waiting a week if it seems to be the PERFECT match! If that happened K would be brought into the hospital for x-rays and labs to be sure she was healed enough.

So that is it!  I must say that telling Matthew that Miss K was leaving broke my heart.  When he found out he just put his face down in his blankets.....Made me so sad.  Then he asked if I could come sit by him for awhile.  He is such a cute stinker.  Those 2 kids had a great time together and Chrissy and I can race with a wagon and IV pole like no other.

I will let you know what happens this Tuesday my friends. Thank You for the kind words and many prayers.

“People skills are important to secure the interview, get the job, do your job well and advance your career,” said Lorie Burgess, human resources manager at participating employer Enviva. “Interpersonal skills are among the most important of all soft skills needed in the job market and could put you ahead of other candidates when employers are selecting the right person to fill a role.”

Self Regional Healthcare Human Resources Generalist Joseph Bender concurred.

“For us, someone can be the best nurse, lab tech, x-ray tech, whatever, but if they do not have a good personality, they will not be hired or kept as an employee,” he said, adding that job seekers should research companies online so their discussions can be on point.

Hosted by Piedmont Technical College (PTC) and the Upper Savannah SC Works System, the event will feature more than 70 employers on site from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Medford Family Event Center on PTC’s Lex Walters Campus, 620 N. Emerald Road in Greenwood.

“The Upper Savannah Workforce Development Board thanks Piedmont Technical College for making this opportunity available for the public,” said Ann Skinner, workforce development administrator for the Upper Savannah Council of Governments. “Not only can people find out about jobs, they can learn about free and low-cost options to get additional training. Having employers and training professionals under one roof allows job seekers to plan their next move.”

“This job fair is one of our most highly anticipated events,” said Joshua Black, vice president for student affairs and communications. “We encourage job-seekers to come out dressed for an interview and to bring extra resumes.”

Companies represented at the job fair come from a diverse range of industries, including advanced manufacturing, law enforcement, health care and engineering.

In preparation, Upper Savannah SC Works suggests that job-seekers:

  • review the list of employers in advance to determine their focus;
  • research companies they are interested in approaching;
  • update their resumes and bring plenty of copies to share; and
  • dress professionally.

“March is the perfect time for high school and college students to start planning for summer jobs and beyond,” Skinner said. “Many of the companies at the event are looking for long-term hires. They want to bring people on who can continue to learn on the job and possibly get more training.”

The event is open to the public. Participating companies include Enviva, Self Regional Healthcare, Teijin Carbon Fibers, Lonza, FujiFilm, Prisma Health, Wesley Commons, Samsung and ZF Transmissions. A full list of participating employers can be viewed online at www.ptc.edu/jobfair

For further details, contact the Upper Savannah Council of Governments at 864-941-8050, 1-800-922-7729, or send an email to work@uppersavannah.com.

Washington (UPI) Mar 12, 2019
Ancient fossilized teeth discovered in Kenya have helped paleontologists fill a gap in the record of Old World monkey evolution. The 22-million-year-old teeth belonged to a newly named monkey species, Alophia metios. The discovery bridged the gap between a 19-million-year-old fossil tooth found in Uganda and a 25-million-year-old fossil tooth recovered in Tanzania. "For a group a

An Introduction to Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a rare, asbestos-related cancer that primarily develops in the protective lining of the lungs and abdomen.
Doctors diagnose an estimated 3,000 cases of mesothelioma in the U.S. each year. It is even more uncommon in India, where the first cases were detected in Rajasthan in 2015.
The cancer's unusually long latency period — or the amount of time before symptoms appear — makes it unique.
It can take anywhere from 20 to 50 years after asbestos exposure for symptoms to appear. There is currently no cure for mesothelioma. Once diagnosed, survival outlook is generally poor, but continued research and improved treatmentoptions are extending life expectancy and easing symptoms.

Causes and Awareness

Mesothelioma typically develops after prolonged exposure to asbestos in the workplace, generally industrial settings or old buildings.
Last year, 15 mesothelioma cases were detected in Ajmer. All 15 cases involved mine workers.
Although asbestos is no longer mined in India, the dangerous mineral is not banned. The country remains the top importer of Canadian asbestos. Experts predict a dramatic rise in mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases in the future, similar to what has developed in the U.S. over the past 50 years.
Mesothelioma develops after inhaling microscopic asbestos fibers that become lodged in the mesothelium, a membrane that surrounds the lungs, stomach and abdominal cavity.
Most commonly, asbestos fibers will get trapped in the lining of the lungs, called the pleura. These fibers can also collect in the abdominal cavity (peritoneum), and in rare cases, the heart (pericardium) and the lining of the testes (tunica vaginalis).
The four types of mesothelioma are named for the affected linings — pleural, peritoneal, pericardial and testicular. Pleural mesothelioma (lungs) is by far the most common form, representing 75 percent of all cases. Peritoneal (abdomen) is next with 10-20 percent of all cases, while pericardial (heart) and testicular mesothelioma represent less than 2 percent of all cases.
Over decades, trapped asbestos fibers can cause health complications, triggering biological changes that cause inflammation, scarring and genetic damage. Once the damage is done, the decades-long latency period sets the stage for the development of malignant mesothelioma.
Asbestos is the leading cause of mesothelioma, with 70-80 percent of people developing the disease from occupational exposure to asbestos. It usually takes long-term asbestos exposure for mesothelioma to develop, but some cases have occurred after short-term or even one-time exposure.

Diagnosing Mesothelioma and Challenges

Mesothelioma can be difficult to detect because of its long latency period and common, flu-like symptoms such as fever, muscle weakness, dry cough, respiratory complications, and pain in the chest or abdomen.
However, it usually isn’t difficult for doctors to distinguish between the four types of mesothelioma, because the tumors grow directly into specific body structures. All four forms are fast-spreading.
Oncologists diagnose mesothelioma using several methods, including blood tests, imaging tests such as MRIs, CT scans, PET scans, X-rays and biopsies.
The key is to recognize symptoms early and alert your doctor of any history with asbestos exposure.

If you’re a pop culture junkie, you should be using Amazon’s X-Ray feature      Cache   Translate Page
Unless you're a super nerdy pop culture junkie who loves going down rabbit holes and consuming all the quirkiest, tiniest details of every movie and TV show you can find, most of the following probably will be news to you. Did you know, for example, that in Deadpool 2 after Deadpool gets his legs torn off by Juggernaut and he hangs out with Blind Al waiting for them to grow back, he's wearing the same shirt that Chunk wears in The Goonies? Josh Brolin, of course, was one of the stars in it -- and he didn't notice the shirt, according to Ryan Reynolds. Or how about this -- did you know that, in the Star Wars franchise, the word Wookiee was inspired by Bill Wookey, a friend of actor Terry McGovern? Terry played a robot cop in George Lucas' THX 1138, improvising the line "I think I ran over a Wookiee back there." These are some of the fun, random and interesting details that Amazon's X-Ray feature generates while you stream TV shows and movies via Amazon's Prime Video service. For the longest time, I didn't pay attention to the results that X-Ray was populating in the top left corner as I watched Amazon content on my mobile devices. But, admittedly, it does give you some pretty fascinating details that could help you go even deeper into the shows and movies you love, if you want. It provides everything from the names of actors and their film credits as they appear on screen, as well as the title of music that's playing and trivia about a particular scene. That Wookiee detail above, for instance, pops up at one point during Solo: A Star Wars Story. At one point while watching Avengers: Infinity War, X-Ray points out that the movie contains remnants from Stan Lee’s past cameos. Tony Stark uses the flip phone that Stan delivered to him in Captain America: Civil War, we're told, and Thor still sports the haircut that Stan gave him in Thor: Ragnarok Among X-Ray's other benefits is occasional exclusive bonus video content found only through X-Ray, which many people may not even be aware of as an X-Ray feature at all. Of course, you can also use X-Ray while reading books on a Kindle-supported device. Which is especially useful when reading something like George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones books, packed as they are with hundreds of characters that some readers may find it difficult to keep track of on their own. For my money, though, watching video content with this helpful feature is particularly interesting. And it's not all fun, light-hearted insights it brings you, either. At one point during the Amazon documentary Lorena executive produced by Jordan Peele, X-Ray notes that the presence of a gun in the house of a domestic violence situation increases the chances of homicide by 500%. During one of the episodes from the first season of Amazon's Jack Ryan series, we're told why Hanin’s planned escape to Europe from the shores of Turkey is a dangerous one. Per X-Ray, according to a 2017 report by the United Nations Refugee Agency, one in every 185 people who crossed the sea between Turkey and Greece from January through April 2017 died either by drowning or from hypothermia. It's certainly an informative, useful tool for learning a little bit more about the world -- both the fictional world of pop culture and the expansive real-life world around you, too.

Abstract
The Macromolecular Femtosecond Crystallography (MFX) instrument at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) is the seventh and newest instrument at the world's first hard X-ray free-electron laser. It was designed with a primary focus on structural biology, employing the ultrafast pulses of X-rays from LCLS at atmospheric conditions to overcome radiation damage limitations in biological measurements. It is also capable of performing various time-resolved measurements. The MFX design consists of a versatile base system capable of supporting multiple methods, techniques and experimental endstations. The primary techniques supported are forward scattering and crystallography, with capabilities for various spectroscopic methods and time-resolved measurements. The location of the MFX instrument allows for utilization of multiplexing methods, increasing user access to LCLS by running multiple experiments simultaneously.

Tuning Anatase-Rutile Phase Transition Temperature: TiO2/SiO2 Nanoparticles Applied in Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells      Cache   Translate Page
TiO2/SiO2 nanoparticles with 3, 5, and 10 molar percent of silica, were synthesized by hydrothermal method and characterized by SEM, TEM, N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, X-ray diffraction, and Raman and UV-Vis spectroscopy. While pristine TiO2 thermally treated at 500°C presents a surface area of 36 m2 g-1 (±10 m2 g-1), TiO2/SiO2 containing 3, 5, and 10 molar percent of silica present surface areas of 93, 124, and 150 m2 g-1 (±10 m2 g-1), respectively. SiO2 is found to form very small amorphous domains well dispersed in the TiO2 matrix. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy data show that anatase-to-rutile phase transition temperature is delayed by the presence of SiO2, enabling single-anatase phase photoanodes for DSSCs. According to the measurements, photoanodes with 3% of SiO2 result in improved efficiency, which is mainly related to increased surface area and dye loading. In addition, the results suggest a gain in photocurrent related to the passivation of defects by SiO2.

Detection of Reflection Features in the Neutron Star Low-Mass X-Ray Binary Serpens X-1 with NICER Ludlam, R. M.; Miller, J. M.; Arzoumanian, Z.; Bult, P. M.; Cackett, E. M.; Dauser, T.; Enoto, T.; Fabian, A. C.; García, J. A.; Gendreau, K. C.; Guillot, S.; Homan, J.; Jaisawal, G. K.; Keek, L.; Malacaria, C.; Markwardt, C. B.; Strohmayer, T. E.; Chakrabarty, Deepto; La Marr, Beverly J; Steiner, James F We present Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) observations of the neutron star (NS) low-mass X-ray binary Serpens X-1 during the early mission phase in 2017. With the high spectral sensitivity and low-energy X-ray passband of NICER, we are able to detect the Fe L line complex in addition to the signature broad, asymmetric Fe K line. We confirm the presence of these lines by comparing the NICER data to archival observations with XMM-Newton/Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) and NuSTAR. Both features originate close to the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO). When modeling the lines with the relativistic line model relline, we find that the Fe L blend requires an inner disk radius of 1.4 [superscript +0.2][subscript -0.01] R ISCO and Fe K is at 1.03[superscript +0.13][subscript -0.03]R ISCO (errors quoted at 90%). This corresponds to a position of 17.3[superscript +2.5][subscript -0.1] km and 12.7[superscript +1.6][subscript -0.04] km for a canonical NS mass (M[subscript NS] = 1.4 M[superscript ⨀]) and dimensionless spin value of a = 0. Additionally, we employ a new version of the relxill model tailored for NSs and determine that these features arise from a dense disk and supersolar Fe abundance.

How well they cope with the task at hand depends largely on the structural features of the nanopores. A new study from the HZB has now shown that structural changes that occur due to morphology transition with increasing temperature of the synthesis can also be measured directly -- using small-angle X-ray scattering. The results have now been published in the journal Carbon.

Nurse-Ins are for EVERYONE      Cache   Translate Page
Often, the only outspoken lactivists are mothers who are currently nursing their children, or have nursed them in the past.  The lactivist community is strong, but insular - demonstrations are often nurse-ins, and understandably, conversation in lactivist groups tends toward the ins-and-outs of being a nursing mother.

Breastfeeding is more than a mom's issue.  It's an everybody issue.

Right now, there's a controversy spreading on Facebook, across the internet, in cafes, stores and churches.  Facebook has recently banned a number of users for posting photos of themselves breastfeeding.  They have deleted an event for a national "Nurse-In", which calls for mothers to post breastfeeding pictures.  Why?

"It's obscene."

I cannot breastfeed my son.  I'd love to post a picture of our brief nursing time, but alas, I didn't capture one at the time.  My husband can't breastfeed, my mom is way past that, and I don't have any friends who are currently breastfeeding their kids.  Nonetheless, I support nursing moms, and their right to feed their babies wherever and whenever the baby needs food.

So, why would I care?

"OMG, I DON'T WANT TO SEE YOUR BOOBS!"

Nursing in public prevents angry, screaming babies.  I hate listening to babies cry hysterically.  It's the worst sound in the world - give me fingernails on chalkboard any day.  Every instinct in my body drives me to find the sound of the screaming child and fix it.   Evolution or God made people that way - we react strongly to the sound of a distressed child, our hormone levels changing, anxiety activated.  When I hear a truly upset baby, all I want to do is help.  If the child is hungry, the solution is simple - feed the baby.   I'd so much rather round the aisle in Target and see a nursing mom than have to hear her child screaming across the store.

Once upon a time, I traveled a lot for business.  When you board a packed plane, there are a few things you dread having in the seat next to you.... a smelly person, an exceptionally large person, and above all else....please.... not a baby!

Well, on one trip, I approached my seat and found a mother with her 18 month old son in her lap.  It was a 4 hour flight, and I was dreading every minute.  We took off, and he started to holler - ear pressure is no fun.  His mom made eye contact with me, popped out her boob, latched him on, and smiled.  I smiled back nervously...did she just do what I think she did?   Her son looked up at me past his mom's nipple and grinned.  I was a little shocked, but there was no screaming.  We chatted on and off during the plane ride, and every time the little one got fussy, she nursed him and he relaxed.  What a pleasure!

That was my first real experience with nursing.  At 23 years old.  What, you say?  It's not a typo.  I understood that, theoretically, women could breastfeed their children, but I had never actually seen it.  For realz.

"OMG, MY KID CAN SEE YOUR BOOBS!!"

I was 23 years old the first time I saw a mother nurse her child.  My mother breastfed me for a few weeks until her doctor told her that she didn't produce enough milk and I was going to starve.  She believed him, and formula-fed me and my younger brothers from then on.  Some of my earliest memories were of bottle-feeding my youngest brother.

I have dozens of cousins, and a large, close family.  During my childhood in the 80s and 90s, either none of them breastfed their children - or if they did, they did so in secret, hidden away in the spare room with the coats.  I never saw it, not once.  My baby dolls came with bottles.  Cartoons showed babies being fed with bottles.  I was raised to believe that's how babies are fed.  With a latex nipple on a tube.

So, when it came time for me to have children, I did research - and found out that breastfeeding is not just best, it's normal - it's how babies are supposed to eat.  All the time.  Babies were made to breastfeed.  Breasts were made for making milk.  Not filling out a bikini top.  I knew it was the right thing to do....but I didn't know how to do it.

I took a class. I read books.  Then it struck me - this is a normal thing to do.  Why did I have to take a class to learn how to do the "football hold"?  Why did I have to take a class to show me how to latch a baby on my breast?  The answer is simple - I had never seen it, up close and personal.  Is it any wonder how difficult breastfeeding was for me?

If you want to know why so many women attempt to breastfeed and fail, I would say to look there.  They didn't learn how, when they were 10 and first learning how to care for infants.  Why can't fathers support breastfeeding moms and give advice?  They never saw it, in real life or on TV.

I later found out that 2 of my aunts did breastfeed my cousins.  They did it in spare bedrooms or the bathroom, because they were told or led to believe that nursing was "indecent" and "obscene." So, at the multitude of gatherings, all I ever saw, and all that millions of American children have ever seen, was a mother either bottle-feeding or sneaking off quietly to some dark room, away from the action, to perform this "disgusting bodily function."

Here's the truth.  Babies don't come with bottles in real life.  They come with boobs.  We are mammals, and mammals breastfeed their young.  Duh.

"OMG, CAN'T YOU COVER UP??"

You don't ask the mother cat with kittens to "cover up" - right?

So, here I was, an expectant mommy, and I bought a nursing cover.  I'm sorry, these things are stupid.  If you're a breastfeeding dummy like me, nursing isn't "instinctual."  It's hard!  Getting the right latch is hard.  Getting the kid on the boob is a challenge at first.  Doing it blind is damn near impossible.  Yeah, yeah, some nursing covers have a hole at the top you can look down through - but their purpose is to reduce sight of breastfeeding.  Right?

Ok, let's see how a new mom, who has never actually witnessed a nursing mom do her thing (because it's gross and indecent and should be done in private only), attempt to get a proper latch with a cover.

Instructions for ensuring a proper latch:

1- The first step to a proper latch on is getting baby to open WIDE!  Brush baby's lips with your nipple to encourage him to open wide, as if yawning.
(Oh yeah, sure.  I'll see his wide-open mouth with my x-ray vision.  With a cover on, I'm going to brush her nose with my nipple, not her lips!)

2 - Once baby's mouth is open wide, quickly pull him onto the breast by pulling the baby toward you with the arm that is holding him.  Make sure you move the baby towards you, and not move yourself towards the baby.
(Sure, no problem.  I'll just hope I'm pulling him in the right direction, and try to accomplish it one-handed, so I can keep this blanket in place....)

3 - The baby's gums should completely bypass the nipple and cover approximately one inch of the areola behind the nipple.  Make sure the baby's lips are everted.  Some baby's will tighten or purse their lips, especially the lower one.  If the lower lip is inverted (turned in), try simply pressing down on baby's chin to evert the inwardly turned lip.
(Forget x-ray vision.... now I need x-ray vision and a friggin MIRROR!)

4 - Note how the baby's lips are correctly everted, and the mouth is open wide.  Also notice how much breast tissue has been taken in, almost the entire areola is in the baby's mouth.
(Hmmm... can't see that areola through the blanket, can I?)

That is mostly a "beginning" problem... what about later on?

I absolutely love this YouTube Video of an older baby's reaction to being covered...

See?  Not always easy.

Plus, returning to my point above, if nursing moms always cover up, little boys and girls have to learn about breastfeeding from a BOOK.

Babies are people too.  They deserve to eat when they're hungry. and they deserve to enjoy their meals without a blanket over their heads.  Pretty simple stuff.

"OMG, CAN'T YOU JUST FEED IT PUMPED MILK IN A BOTTLE??"

Sigh.  Again, a dumb idea from someone who's either never breastfed, or someone who never had problems.

First, when babies are super-little, bottle-feeding can cause "nipple confusion".  Just like it takes a mom some time to figure out how to breastfeed correctly, it takes babies some time.  Artificial nipples work differently than boobs.  They have one hole, boobs have multiple holes.  Breastmilk flows at different rates during a feeding, bottles flow at only one speed - fast!  Babies have to work at the boob.  They just have to open their mouths with a bottle.  If you introduce a bottle before a baby is fully established with breastfeeding, you can actually sabotage the breastfeeding relationship.

Not all babies will take a bottle, either.  Choice #1 - food from the source, at the right temperature, starting out light and progressing to a thick, sweet dessert as the meal progresses.  Great company, skin-to-skin contact, and just the right fit.  Choice #2, your meal all mixed up, shooting out fast, either too hot or too cold.  Sure, it's still a steak dinner with cheesecake, but you're getting it through the drive-through.

Not all moms have a strong enough supply to pump and feed their baby the old-fashioned way.  To pull this off, she has to make enough food for breakfast and lunch at the same time, but still have enough in the "fridge" for lunch later on.  Pumping's not easy, either - you don't get the same amount from a machine as you do from a baby.

Even if Mom does become a pumping pro, it can change her supply to the other side of things, with engorgement and overproduction.  If you think nursing in public is gross, just wait till she whips out the pump!

NEWS FLASH: Breast milk is not shelf-stable.  It's milk.  Hello.  It has to be refrigerated once it's been pumped out.  So, if Mom's away from a fridge for longer than a couple hours, it's the boob or nothing.   And we're back to the screaming baby.

"CAN'T YOU JUST GO IN THE BATHROOM??"
Right.
'Cause that's a nice, safe, clean and comfortable place to enjoy a meal.

Did we forget?  Babies are people, too.

So, nursing moms, keep it up. Whip it out.
Feed your babies.

Nurse in public.  In church.  At the store, in an airplane, in the playground, at the mall, at Christmas parties and birthday celebrations, in line for Santa, at a restaurant.  You're doing what's best for your baby, absolutely.

Just as important, you're showing that little girl at the next table over how to do it right.  You're teaching your nephew how to become a supportive father.  You're reducing noise pollution.  You're improving the public health.

You're saving the world, and I'm more than happy to hold your cape.

Japanese government 'misleading UN on impact of Fukushima fallout'      Cache   Translate Page

The Japanese government is deliberately misleading human rights bodies and experts over the ongoing nuclear crisis in areas of Fukushima, according to a new investigation by Greenpeace Japan.

The Japanese government is deliberately misleading United Nations human rights bodies and experts over the ongoing nuclear crisis in areas of Fukushima, according to a new investigation by Greenpeace Japan.

The report, On the Frontline of the Fukushima Nuclear Accident: Workers and Children, reveals high levels of radiation in both exclusion zones and open areas still exist even after huge decontamination efforts, and documents the extent of the government’s violation of international human rights conventions and guidelines, in particular those for workers and children.

“In areas where some of these decontamination workers are operating, the radiation levels would be considered an emergency if they were inside a nuclear facility”, said Shaun Burnie, Senior Nuclear Specialist of Greenpeace Germany. “These workers have received almost no training in radiation protection, are poorly paid, exposed to high radiation, and risk losing their jobs if they speak out. UN human rights Special Rapporteurs are absolutely right to warn the Japanese government over these risks and violations.”

The main findings of the Greenpeace Japan investigation include:

  • Radiation levels in the exclusion zone and lifted evacuation areas of Namie and Iitate are a significant risk for the public including children. Levels range from five to over 100 times higher than the internationally recommended maximum and will remain so for many decades and into next century.
  • In the exclusion zone in Obori in Namie, average radiation levels were 4.0 Sv per hour. These levels are so high that if a worker would operate there for eight hours per day during a full year, they could receive a dose equivalent to more than a hundred chest X-rays.
  • At a forest across the street from a kindergarten and school in Namie town where evacuation orders have been lifted, the average radiation level was 1.8 Sv per hour. All 1,584 points measured exceeded the Japanese government’s long-term decontamination target of 0.23 Sv per hour. In 28 per cent of this area, the children’s annual dose could be 10-20 times higher than the internationally recommended maximum.
  • Worker exploitation is widespread, including recruitment from the disadvantaged  and homeless, no effective training in radiation protection, falsification of identification and health certificates, and unreliable official records.

A former decontamination worker Mr. Minoru Ikeda who is featured in the Greenpeace Japan report says his experience made him feel like they were treated inhumanely.

“One person compared it to slavery. As someone who has been there at the scene, I want to let the world know what is happening. I want to call on the Japanese government to respect the health of workers and stop sending people to do these dangerous jobs, and also to provide proper support for the workers,” says Mr. Ikeda.

The report comes one month after the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child issued a damning series of recommendations to the Japanese government which, if implemented, would terminate current policies in Fukushima, including a halt to lifting evacuation orders, full compensation to evacuees, and the full application of all relevant human rights obligations to evacuees and workers.

“In its reporting to the United Nations, the Japanese government deliberately misrepresents the scale, complexity, and radiation risks in areas of Fukushima, the working practice and conditions for workers, and its disregard for children’s health and wellbeing. This reality should shame the government to radically change its failing policies”, said Kazue Suzuki, Energy Campaigner of Greenpeace Japan.

“At the root of the Fukushima nuclear disaster and resulting human rights violations is the dangerous energy policy of the Japanese government. What the majority of Japanese people are demanding is a transition to renewable energy. Yet, the government is seeking to restart nuclear reactors and at the same time dramatically increase the number of coal power plants, which leads to extreme climate change”, Suzuki added.

Testimony has been given at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on the violation of children rights due to the Fukushima nuclear disaster and Japanese government policies.

Fibrocystic breast disease

Fibrocystic breast disease is a general term that refers to a variety of symptoms and diagnoses, including breast lumpiness, tenderness, and a wide range of vaguely-defined benign breast conditions. The term is also used diagnostically to describe the appearance of breast tissues viewed under the microscope, on x-ray film, or on ultrasound equipment.

Description

There is no such thing as a typical or normal female breast. Breasts come in all shapes and sizes, with varying textures from smooth to extremely lumpy. The tissues of the female breast change in response to hormone levels, normal aging, nursing (lactation), weight shifts, and injury. To further complicate matters, the breast has several types of tissue, each of which may respond differently to changes in body chemistry.

Fibrocystic breast disease is clearly not a single, specific disease process. Variations or changes in the way the breast feels or looks on an x ray may cause the condition to be called “fibrocystic change.” Other names have been used to refer to this imprecise and ill-defined term: mammary dysplasia, mastopathy, chronic cystic mastitis, indurative mastopathy, mastalgia, lumpy breasts, or physiologic nodularity.

Estimates vary, but 40–90% of all women have some evidence of fibrocystic condition, change, or disease. It is most common among women ages 30–50, but may be seen at other ages.

Causes & symptoms

Fibrocystic condition refers to technical findings. This discussion will focus on symptoms a woman experiences, which may fall under the general category of the fibrocystic condition.

The breast is not a soft, smooth, pulpy organ. It is actually a type of sweat gland. Milk, the breasts’ version of sweat, is secreted when the breast receives appropriate hormonal and environmental stimulation.

The normal breast contains milk glands, with their accompanying ducts, or pipelines, for transporting the milk. These complex structures may not only alter in size, but can increase or decrease in number as needed. Fibrous connective tissue, fatty tissue, nerves, blood and lymph vessels, and lymph nodes, with their different shapes and textures, lie among the ever-changing milk glands. This explains why a woman’s breasts may not feel uniform in texture, and why “lumpiness” may wax and wane.

Fibrocystic condition is the tenderness, enlargement, and/or changing lumpiness that many women encounter just before or during their menstrual periods. At this time, female hormones are preparing the breasts for pregnancy, by stimulating the milk-producing cells and storing fluid. Each breast may contain as much as three to six teaspoons of excess liquid. Swelling, with increased sensitivity or pain, may result. If pregnancy does not occur, the body reabsorbs the fluid, and the engorgement and discomfort are relieved.

These symptoms range from mildly annoying in some women to extremely painful in others. The severity of the sensations may vary from month to month in the same woman. Although sometimes distressing, this experience is the body’s normal response to routine hormonal changes.

This cycle of breast sensitivity, pain, and/or enlargement can also result from medications. Some hormone replacement therapies used for post-menopausal women can produce these effects. Other medications, primarily, but not exclusively, those with hormones, may also provoke these symptoms.

Breast pain unrelated to hormone shifts is called “noncyclic” pain. This area-specific pain is also called “trigger-zone breast pain,” and it may be continuous, or may be felt intermittently. Trauma, such as a blow to the area, or a breast biopsy performed several years before, or sensitivity to certain medications may also underlie this type of pain. Fibrocystic condition may be cited as the cause of otherwise unexplained breast pain.

Lumps, apart from those clearly associated with hormone cycles, may also be placed under the heading of fibrocystic condition. These lumps stand out from enlarged general breast tissue. The obvious concern with such lumps is cancer, although noncancerous lumps also occur. Two noncancerous types, fibroadenomas and cysts, are discussed here.

Fibroadenomas are tumors which form in the tissues outside the milk ducts. The cause of fibroadenomas is unknown. They generally feel smooth and firm, with a somewhat rubber-like texture. Typically a fibroadenoma is not attached to surrounding tissue, and will move slightly when touched. They are most commonly found in adolescents and women in their early 20s but can arise at any age.

Cysts are fluid-filled sacs in the breast. They probably develop as ducts become clogged with old cells in the process of normal emptying and filling. Cysts usually feel soft and round or oval. However, a cyst deep within the breast may feel hard, as it pushes up against firmer breast tissue. A woman with a cyst may experience pain, especially if it increases in size before her menstrual cycle, as many do. Women age 30–50 are most likely to develop cysts.

Sometimes one area of breast tissue persistently feels thicker or more prominent than the rest of the breast. This may be caused by hardened scar tissue and/or dead fat tissue from surgery or trauma. Often the cause of such tissue is unknown.

A number of other breast problems which are benign or noncancerous may be placed under the heading of fibrocystic condition. These include disorders which may lead to breast inflammation (mastitis), infection, nipple discharge, dilated milk ducts, milk-filled cyst, wart-like growth in the duct, and excess growth of fibrous tissue around the glands.

Diagnosis

Breast cancer is the concern in most cases of an abnormal breast symptom. A newly discovered breast lump should be brought to the attention of a family physician or an obstetrician-gynecologist. A physical examination of the area is usually performed. Depending on the findings, the patient may be referred for tests.

The most common tests are mammography and breast ultrasound. A cyst may be definitively diagnosed by ultrasound. To relieve the discomfort, the patient may choose to have the cyst suctioned, or drained. If there is any question as to the fluid diagnosis, the fluid is sent for analysis.

If a lump cannot be proven benign by mammography and ultrasound, a breast biopsy may be considered. Tissue is removed through a needle to obtain a sample of the lump. The sample is examined under the microscope by a pathologist, and a detailed diagnosis regarding the type of benign lesion or cancer is established.

A ductogram evaluates nipple discharge. A very fine tube is threaded into the duct, dye is injected, and the area is looked at for diagnosis. Other breast conditions such as inflammation or infection are usually recognized on the basis of suspicious history, such as breast-feeding and characteristic symptoms such as pain, redness, and swelling. A positive response to appropriate therapies will support the diagnosis.

Treatment

Warm soaks, heating pads, or ice packs may provide comfort. A well-fitted support bra worn day and night can minimize physical movement and do much to relieve breast discomfort. Breast massage may promote removal of excess fluid from tissues and alleviate symptoms. Massaging the breast with castor oil, straight or infused with herbs or diluted essential oils, can help reduce and dissipate fibroadenomas as well as keep women in touch with changes in their breasts.

Many women have reported relief of symptoms when caffeine was reduced or eliminated from their diets. Decreasing salt intake before and during the period when breasts are most sensitive may also ease swelling and discomfort. Vitamins A, B complex, and E and selenium supplements have been reported to be helpful.

Because fat promotes estrogen production, and estrogen is thought to be linked to breast tenderness, low-fat diets and elimination of dairy products also seem to decrease soreness for some women. Restricting salt intake may also help reduce fluid retention and lessen breast pain. It may take several months to realize the effects of these various treatments.

Evening primrose oil (Oenothera biennis), flax oil, and fish oils have been reported to be effective in relieving cyclic breast pain for some women. In addition, a focus on liver cleansing is important to assist the body in conjugation and elimination of excess estrogens. The herb chaste tree (Vitex angus-castus) can be used to help relieve symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), including breast tenderness.

A Chinese herbalist may recommend Herba cum Radice Asari with Radix Angelicae Sinensis and Flos Carthami Tinctorii for painful breast lumps, or Rhizoma Cyperi Rotundi with Radix Bupleuri and Fructus Trichosanthis for breast masses that swell around the time of menstruation.

Allopathic treatment

A lump that has been proven benign can be left in the breast. Some women may choose to have a lump such as a fibroadenoma surgically removed, especially if it is large. Infections are treated with warm compresses and antibiotics. Lactating women are encouraged to continue breastfeeding, as it promotes drainage and healing. A serious infection may progress to form an abscess which may need surgical drainage.

Once a specific disorder within the broad category of fibrocystic condition is identified, treatment can be prescribed. Symptoms of cyclical breast sensitivity and engorgement may be treated with diet, medication, and/or physical modifications.

Over-the-counter analgesics (pain relievers) such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil) may be recommended. In some cases, treatment with hormones or hormone blockers may prove successful. Birth control pills may be prescribed.

Expected results

Most benign breast conditions carry no increased risk for the development of breast cancer. However, a small percentage of biopsies will uncover overgrowth of tissue in a particular pattern in some women that indicates a 15–20% risk of developing breast cancer over the next 20 years. Strict attention to early detection measures, such as annual mammograms, is especially important for these women.

Prevention

No way has yet been proven to prevent the various manifestations of fibrocystic condition from occurring. Some alternative practitioners believe that elimination of foods high in methylxanthines (primarily coffee and chocolate) can decrease or reverse fibrocystic breast changes.

This is just a quick post. George is sick. He is at the vet's right now. I have been sick with worry over the last 3 days. I have done so much for George, including giving him subcutaneous fluids (Thank God I am a nurse!) I brought him in today because I just don't know what else to do for him. THey are doing X-rays and a lot of blood work, urine and fecal tests, the works. If you are a praying person, please pray for him.

I have also been having trouble with Buddy. We started going to counseling and it is helping him. But he could also use prayers!!

I hope to post soon saying how strong George is again. And that Buddy is doing much better. But in the meantime please pray for us! Thank you

Birth doulas are misunderstood. Here's what we actually do.      Cache   Translate Page

I was not supposed to be a birth doula. But somehow, here I am.

I do not believe in homeopathy. I like randomized controlled trials and reason. I last wore a tie-dyed skirt when I was 11. There wasn't a whiff of patchouli in my upbringing — my father is a doctor and my mother a radiographer. I spent my toddlerhood making paper dollies with Betty the X-ray technician in the dim red glow of in a hospital darkroom.

So how did I end up in the world of doulas — a profession stereotyped as being full of crystal-waving hippies and earth mamas?

Before I answer that, it's important to explain what, exactly, a doula is, especially as the role grows in popularity and gains attention in the public eye. Meghan Markle has reportedly hired a U.K. doula, like myself, to support her and Prince Harry through her pregnancy and upcoming birth. As a result, the media spotlight is shining on my profession. But the myth that what we do is just a luxurious add-on for the rich is several trimesters away from the truth.

By definition, a doula is someone who provides support to a birthing mother, her partner, and her baby. This support isn't medical — we don't give exams or offer medical advice. We are not midwives or doctors. Our work is in caring for the practical and emotional needs of laboring women and their partners. We signpost to information. We advocate. We make nourishing food. We listen. We fill a role that women have filled for each other for millennia. This kind of non-judgmental, experienced support from a layperson can make a profound difference in the transition from individual to parent, and the research backs this up.

One study found that women who had a doula-like person beside them continuously throughout their childbirth needed fewer cesareans, less pain relief, had shorter labors, and were more satisfied overall with their births. Their babies had a reduced chance of being born with low APGAR scores, and these benefits were most pronounced when this support person was not a family member, a friend, or a member of medical staff — in other words, when they were performing the role of a doula. In the U.S., one survey found that roughly 6 percent of birthing mothers have used a doula during childbirth; in hindsight, 27 percent said they wished they had.

I know all this. But I am always less compelled by these findings than by my knowledge of what my human-comfort-blanket-of-a-doula did for me. The doulas I hired to support my husband and me through two pregnancies, births, and the newborn days changed my experiences as a mother — as well as my world view. My doulas reminded me to ask good questions when my water broke before labor, so that I was always at the center of my pregnancy and birth. In the tear-filled first days of new motherhood, my doulas arrived at my house, bringing stew that nourished my body, and wisdom that nourished my soul.

Then, in the weeks after my pregnancies, and as I spent the night-time hours relentlessly nursing, all the things I understood about myself and the world whirled around above my head, breaking up, reforming, and eventually falling back into my hands in a different order, stuck back together with a mixture of love, breast milk, and rage. Though I'd been working in the human rights world before I became a mother, it took becoming a parent to see that the birthing experience is fraught with inequities and injustices for women. I discovered that the pressure from society to give birth "naturally," to breastfeed exclusively, and to be the perfect mother wasn't matched with adequate support for most. Women are still making sacrifices and finding their careers derailed in ways I'd naively presumed were outdated. If it felt unfair to me — a middle-class, white woman — I knew others were having a much harder time. I felt compelled to become a doula.

A doula is someone who knows you and who knows birth, who will not tell you what to do, but who will help you work it out for yourself. Someone who believes in you and won't flinch at picking up your stained underwear from the floor. She will answer the phone when you call at 4 a.m., the sound of a newborn wailing in the background, and she will listen without judgment as you say you are worried you made a terrible mistake with this whole motherhood thing. With her support, you will know this feeling is normal and that it will pass.

A doula spots your moment of fear and reassures you in a way that is meaningful to you because she knows you — and you believe her because you know her. A doula helps you navigate a system that can be unfriendly to women and who understands exactly why you find pelvic exams triggering. Perhaps she is someone who was there with you and your partner when you birthed your stillborn baby. She took the photos of him that you keep in a memory box, and she cried with you and for you. Through that experience, she is someone who has a glimpse into the complex tangle of feelings you have for this rainbow child you are giving birth to today. Later she will listen when you tell her about them, but right now she'll breathe with you through each contraction and wipe the sweat off your forehead.

My job as a doula is to walk alongside women and their families on the unique-yet-everyday journey in and out of childbirth: listening to them, holding their tea; their hands; their feelings. Reminding them that they matter at a time when their mental health is most at risk and when it is easy to feel they have been completely erased by the process of becoming a mother.

I work with women a little like Megan Markle, but mostly I work with women who face motherhood without the privileges from which Megan benefits. I've learned that structural, medical, and socio-cultural issues collude to violate women's rights and make them less safe in their maternity care. Some women will return from the hospital to a women's refuge, so they hope desperately to avoid a cesarean birth, because there is absolutely no one to help them do the heavy lifting. Others, some of the many survivors of sexual violence, will be so triggered by the routine interventions in childbirth that they fight hard for a cesarean or a hands-off homebirth to try and keep post-traumatic stress disorder at bay.

What I've seen as a doula — the injustices served to mothers — took me on a journey to co-founding a human rights in childbirth charity. I then felt I needed to become a writer so I could try and tell the world about the important, unsanitized truths women whispered in my ear in between their contractions.

Doulas are not a fashionable new status symbol, but an innovation based on a basic human need that the industrialized version of childbirth (a version that, it must be said, has saved lives, innovated, and advanced the world) omitted from its plans. I work with many brilliant obstetricians and midwives, and sometimes their work happily overlaps with what I do. But I will always defend a birthing woman's desire to have a person just for them — whose only job is the hand-holding, the whispering of sweet nothings, and the listening. A doula's job is to love.
