Live at Top to Top: AR/VR adoption curve ticking up      Cache   Translate Page
Top 2 Top: AR/VR emergence
The augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) headsets that have shown potential, but limited adoption, among CPGs, brand owners, and food and beverage manufacturers seem to finally be gaining traction in operations.

At PMMI’s exclusive Top to Top meeting held this week, a panel consisting of two forward-thinking brand owners and another like-minded packaging machinery OEM ticked off a laundry list of best practices, hurdles, and solutions for deploying the technology.

“I had been monitoring the technology, but the tipping point for me was that the form factor for certain types of glasses [Vuzix in this case] finally matched what would otherwise be typical safety glasses,” one brand owner said. “The moment I saw that, I thought, ‘OK, it’s ready for production, since we wear safety glasses anyways.”

Still, he warned, it will change again within six months, and again a few months after that. The speed at which the AR/VR technology is developing across industry means that it quickly becomes obsolete. But for early adopters, being ahead of the curve has been worth the constant treadmill of keeping up with new features and capabilities.

The brand owner described an FAT that was to be held halfway around the world. Only a fraction of the team needed to go, while the remaining team members stayed home, but were visually and audibly patched in, via the AR 3D space, to accompany the field team on the FAT. He said that cost savings paid for their fledgling AR/VR program then and there, upon first use.

Content creation burden
The benefit to in terms of live troubleshooting or live remote FAT/SAT support obviate themselves. But more sophisticated uses may require more input, such as developing and maintaining documentation and content in the form of instruction manuals, video troubleshooting, etc. that’s to be made available via the headpiece/hardware. This takes time and effort to develop, but the other brand owner who implemented this tech mentioned an unforeseen benefit. He was forced to clean, refresh, and update an old and disorganized instruction-style content. Having such documents available at the touch of the AR glasses means they’re more regularly consulted – content obsolescence was recognized and eliminated.

The same brand owner uses the AR/VR glasses in conjunction with QR codes located throughout processing and packaging machines in his plant. The QR codes care pertinent information such as safety instructions, red/yellow/green status, live data for temperature, speed, vibration, and various other KPIs related, in real time, at a glance of someone wearing the headset. Again, that means there’s some back-end in work in keeping the associated information, safety standards, and other content is updated and available. This brand owner is still working on developing a training program with courses that new hires can take with the AR/VR headset, as well.

What brand owners want to use it for is a thornier issue, and the following issues continue to hamper long term adoption:

  • There are a lot of different formats, software, and levels of sophistication. As different OEMs choose or standardize on different formats, that means CPG customers, who have many different OEM supplier partners, may be forced to learn many different AR/VR formats. [Note: One OEM that serves several industries indicated they support 85 formats including digital
  • Sometimes the technology is more than you need – will a simple video do the job? This could be a both/and situation in which the troubleshooting video is part of the AR/VR content. When the pre-loaded video doesn’t do the job, the same headset that shows the video can also remotely connect to a maintenance person in another state, or an OEM for service or remote diagnostics.
  • Remote diagnostics themselves are an issue and evokes the larger IT/OT divide. Will a CPG allow video from live production to exit the four walls of the plant? Will they even allow a cell phone in to provide a hotspot?
  • Battery life is currently around two hours when the headset is completing heavy lifting like sharing video remotely but can extend to eight hours when completing more mundane tasks.

For OEMs, the potential benefits are clear. CPG and brand owner adoption, based largely on uncertainty around remote access, seem to be the largest stumbling block. Here are a few potential benefits to OEMs:

  • Instead of sending two people to a service call, one experienced, and one junior to learn, the junior could go alone knowing that experienced reinforcement can remote in.
  • Remote training and trouble-shooting remotely
  • Custom machinery builders can use the platform to constantly course correct and maintain contact with the end user throughout the project, making adjustments on the fly and reducing rework. “They can see what we’re doing through our eyes, so they don’t have to send someone every time there’s an alteration on the design – we can show them remotely,” the OEM said.

The question then becomes whether the CPG or the OEM should ‘own’ the platform. Many vendors with many platforms, as has been mentioned, maybe a hurdle that prevents end user adoption.

Should CPGs, then, take the lead on ‘owning’ the AR/VR platform and sharing it with (or specifying it to) their machinery or controls/components vendors? Usually the expense occurred by CPGs would make this a nonstarter, but the low barrier to entry as far as AR/VR cost may make this realistic. And not only realistic, it could be practical in preventing yet another situation in which many OEMs develop their own disparate, proprietary AR/VR programs, with CPGs and brand owners having to learn many different formats from all their vendors. The coming years will probably decide where the balance of platform ‘ownership’ falls: the OEM or the end user of equipment.

More: Here is a smattering of other pragmatic tips for starting an AR/VR program, wherever you stand on the supply chain:

1. College campus experiment
An adage about college campuses juxtaposes the paved walkways that represent the planned routes with the worn foot trails and shortcuts through the grass that appear on college campuses. The former lead were planners aimed to have people walk, the later represented where students actually walked.

The brand owner panelist elicited this dynamic while presenting to impress upon attendees that implementation should be a function of addressing a need rather than implementing for the sake of implementing.

“We set up people to walk one way only to discover they want to walk somewhere else,” he said. “You don’t want that to happen with your AR/VR program. Start using it, but wait and watch to see where people want to use it, where people find value in it, rather than dictating it be used when it might be a square peg in a round hole. Don’t pick the tool and then go try to find the problem. And don’t use the tool to try to solve the problem you think they have. Instead, throw it out there and see what they do. Let the uses develop organically, then build on that. Adoption will improve because the application will be theirs based on their needs, not what you think they need.”

2. Engage an AR/VR champion
Simply using the technology is easy – five minutes out of the box is all it takes to be remotely recording and sharing content. “We were shocked by how simple it was to set up,” said one of the brand owners. He also pointed to the fact that the it’s a technology that tends to excite millennials—plus, thanks to video games and other electronic experiences they grew up with, AR/VR is a space they’re naturally familiar with in ways previous generations might not be. So, implementation can be an engaging responsibility for the right type of person.

3. Beware one-size-fits-all approach from vendors
Currently AR/VR headsets are deployed across industry, including everything from oil and gas to gaming. Be sure you’re working with someone who understands your needs, and knows they are quite different from others to avoid costly upcharges for features you don’t need.

Gartner Predicts 3 Digital Business Impacts on PPM      Cache   Translate Page

If your team or organization has the mindset that continuing with the historical, predigital status quo will be enough to keep operations going, think again. The time to elevate enterprise-level support and coordination across emerging product, program and portfolio management (PPM) capabilities for digital business is now.

Many PPM leaders are facing a digital business reality check

“Frankly, many PPM leaders are facing a digital business reality check,” says Joanne Kopcho, VP Analyst at Gartner. “Large, historical investments in PPM practices and technologies lack the new automation, efficiency and adaptive approaches required to support digital business.”

[swg_ad id="18448"]

Kopcho outlines three key predictions to consider when it comes to digital business demands.

By 2023, technology providers focused on AI, VR and digital platforms will disrupt, and elicit a marked response by, the traditional providers within the PPM market.

Much of the software architecture in the PPM market is stuck in hallmarks of the past, including browser-based user interfaces and archaic database technologies. But these stalwarts are stagnating in the digital age.

“Emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) or virtual reality (VR) will not be realized for at least the next four years for PPM practitioners,” says Kopcho. “This lack of urgency is directly associated with the lack of digital-friendly solutions offered by PPM technology providers, but we’re expecting the newer generation of PPM end users and startup providers to begin applying pressure based on the limitations of today’s PPM tools.”

PPM leaders and software users will remain skeptical of the promises of AI in PPM technology until they experience firsthand how AI can make their lives easier and reduce the amount of administrative work they are required to perform.

By 2023, agile PPM will replace project management as the dominant approach for effective enterprise change and outcomes.

Adopting agile work practices will enable organizations to prioritize customer needs and deliver faster results. As the shift from project to product management takes place, there is more emphasis on ongoing product transformation and, in turn, increased user satisfaction.

“PPM leaders should support transformation initiatives by proactively demonstrating an understanding of agile and product management, how the existing way of operating must change, and, most importantly, embracing new roles across digital products in an agile world,” says Kopcho.

Read more: Transform Your Portfolio With 2 Key Project Management Practices

By 2023, 80% of organizations will have an enterprise program management office (EPMO) focused on integrating digital products and programs.

Digital business is altering the role of existing program management offices (PMOs) from operational to strategic, requiring PPM leaders to be effective enablers of strategic execution for the enterprise.

The EPMO will provide collaboration, coordination, and facilitation across product lines, products, programs and portfolios for success. With such qualities within the EPMO, the organization can help orchestrate and achieve continued insight into outcomes, strategic objectives and cross-organizational changes.

“PPM leaders must reinvent PMO processes, embrace new ideas and enhance skill sets to support the digital direction of the CIO and CxOs, or risk being left behind,” says Kopcho.

Again, visualization of uncertainty in higher dimensional data is tricky, but in the 3D (spatial) case could be essentially improved by modern 3D techniques (holographic projection, virtual reality or even 3D printing etc.). Especially by color coding or better by transparency you could even visualize the overall intensity of overlapping areas. Think about the same with a probability parameter instead of uncertainty.

Seattle's Multibillion Dollar Gaming Industry      Cache   Translate Page
How did the Pacific Northwest become the center of video-game creation in the first place? by Lester Black

Seattle is a gaming town. Not just because we have a lot of people who play video games. Not just because it's easier to find a box of Catan or Scrabble than order a drink in a Seattle bar. This is a gaming town because we make billions of dollars a year from the business itself.

We don't just play games in Seattle—we make the games the rest of the world plays.

In case you're not aware, the Pacific Northwest is home to some of the biggest names in the gaming industry. Logos of local companies are displayed on the loading screen for gaming devices around the world. Microsoft's Xbox Game Studios along with Bungie created the blockbuster Halo franchise here. Valve, which created the enormously popular Steam service and games like Half Life, is here. Wizards of the Coast, the publisher of hugely popular card games like Magic: The Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons, and the Pokémon Trading Card Game is here. Nintendo's North American headquarters is here.

Even Amazon, our local digital-business behemoth, has announced that it is "all-in on games" after spending $970 million on Twitch, a live video-game streaming site that has become hugely popular with people who like to watch other people play video games.

Any way you look at it, these companies create a big economic impact in the local area. A 2016 study commissioned by the Washington Interactive Network (WIN), a nonprofit that advocates for the local gaming industry, found that there are more than 430 local gaming companies that employ 20,800 people and give work to an additional 2,400 freelancers. These companies generated $21.4 billion in revenue in 2015 and paid $7.6 billion in labor income.

This industry is no secret in Eastside communities like Bellevue or Redmond, where at least one McMansion per block must be getting its mortgage paid with video-game money. Most of these video-game workers are professionals in fields like computer science, software engineering, law, or executive management.

If we really want to understand how geek culture affects our local economy, we need to look at how these gaming salaries pay for everything from groceries to weed to cars. WIN added up the impact of these salaries and found that the gaming industry supports 94,200 jobs through "direct, indirect, and induced impacts."

That's a big influence all from one industry—so why is it here? Did our gloomy winters bring all of these gaming experts to the area? Nope. It turns out the very non-virtual world of aerospace engineering had more to do with launching our local gaming industry, according to Kristina Hudson, the executive director for WIN.

"It all goes back to Boeing," Hudson said. "Boeing had a wealth of engineers, and there was a time when they were doing flight simulation work. And that was when you started to get interactive software creation and media development."

After Boeing put engineers to work on creating flight simulation technology, other companies followed. Nintendo opened its North American headquarters in Redmond in 1982. Microsoft expanded from just personal computing to personal video gaming in the late 1990s.

The local industry kept growing until it attained enough momentum that it became known worldwide. Gaming companies now want to move to the Seattle area because they know that the gaming "talent"—the software engineers and computer scientists who know how to build games—is here.

"When you're looking at drawing companies to the region or when companies are expanding, it's all about the talent. Companies want to be here to take advantage of that talent," Hudson said.

Seattle's hotbed of engineering talent is helping our local industry spearhead the future of gaming: augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR).

Oculus, Facebook's VR arm, has an office in Redmond and has been pushing other local companies to create products for their VR platform the Oculus Rift. Jeff Pobst, the CEO of Hidden Path Entertainment, said that his company "had no plans" to get into VR when it started in 2006. But Oculus convinced Hidden Path to produce VR games, and the Bellevue company now has seven VR titles.

"The Seattle area in general is one of the top places for game development in the country, and because of our confluence of artists, designers, and technologists... that opens up the opportunity for working in VR and AR, where you have to be creative but you also have to be very strong technically," Pobst said.

Most people connect VR technology with gaming, but it's already starting to transition into a vast array of other industries. Pobst said VR technology is already being used by industries as disparate as government, medicine, and real estate. VR technology is still relatively new, with lots of room for technological improvement, which means one thing for Seattle: There's plenty of work in the future for the local gaming industry.

And Seattle is going to keep being part of the future of gaming—and tech itself—worldwide.

Pearl – 360° Google Spotlight Story      Cache   Translate Page
Gifts you receive from your parents last a lifetime. These gifts are invaluable and therefore cannot be priced. Google Spotlight Stories, which is part of Google’s ATAP R&D unit, uses this touching effect for its new six-minute animation named “Pearl”. They have been supported by the company’s 360-degree film group with its ever-ambitious ideas. This unbranded video looks into the lifespan of a girl and her musician father – her growing up and her father getting old. The movie set is almost entirely in their beloved car presenting it almost as their home.  It depicts the very first ride as well as other invaluable moments in their life. The conveyance of the theme “Home” enhances the movie’s enthralling aspects and at the same time plays strongly with people’s emotions. Using 360-degree –or virtual reality- is adding to this strong sentimental value. Using the cursor on the left hand of the video enables the audience to see the movie in 360-degree and to decide which scene and angle they want to follow. This is a great …

When employees revolt!      Cache   Translate Page
Microsoft employees recently made the news protesting the company’s $479 million contract with the U.S. Military to create mixed reality headsets using the HoloLens platform for use in war. Click on the link if you have no clue what we are talking about, but these are basically headsets that blend reality and virtual reality into the wearer’s experience. Anyway, whatever it is Microsoft is working on something for the U.S. Military that, using this technology, “provides increased lethality, mobility, and situational awareness necessary to achieve overmatch against our current and future adversaries.” Some of the Microsoft engineers tasked with working on this project signed a petition stating that they “refuse to create technology for warfare and oppression” and demanding that Microsoft stop the project. Microsoft has so far not heeded the employees’ demands to stop working with the U.S. Military on this project and it is not expected…

Daylight and temperature in buildings: interaction effects on human responses      Cache   Translate Page
Over the past years, increasing efforts have been devoted to understand how people perceive the indoor environment with the goal to improve building design and operation. Studies have separately addressed the effects of the four main aspects that influence the perception of the indoor environment, i.e., visual appearance, thermal condition, acoustic ambiance, and air quality. However, building occupants are simultaneously exposed to multiple indoor stimuli and their perception of the indoor environment depends on the mutual combination and interaction of such stimuli. Despite the increasing interest in the topic, few studies on the interactions between indoor factors are available. Most of them have focused on interactions between thermal and visual factors due to their large implications for energy consumption and building design. In this context, electric lighting has been primarily used as visual stimulus, leaving a knowledge gap on interaction effects in daylit environments. To address this challenge, this doctoral thesis focuses on the effects of visual and thermal interactions on human responses, with the use of daylight as the sole source of light. Two types of visual-thermal combinations are investigated: temperature and "daylight color" (i.e., daylight transmitted through colored glazing) and temperature and daylight quantity (i.e., illuminance levels). The aim of this work is threefold: (i) understand the effect of daylight color and quantity on thermal perceptual and physiological responses; (ii) investigate the influence of indoor temperature on visual perception of daylight; and (iii) explore the effect of daylight and temperature combination on the overall comfort perception. To address the previous aspects, four experiments were conducted. Two of them were carried out in an office-like test room to investigate both visual-thermal combinations. One field study was performed to further explore temperature and daylight quantity interactions. One experiment was conducted in a test room with the use of virtual reality to further investigate temperature and "daylight color" interactions. The results of this thesis show that daylight and temperature do interact, influencing human responses in a perceptual rather than in a physiological way. The interaction effects are bi-directional, as temperature influences visual perception, and daylight color and quantity affects thermal perception. Daylight conditions and indoor temperatures simultaneously and equally contribute to the overall comfort perception, but only after a relatively long exposure to the visual stimulus. The findings of this research suggest that indoor factors should not be considered separately but in combination. The integration in both research and practice of interaction effects between indoor factors will ultimately contribute to the improvement of comfort conditions inside buildings. Potentially, this integration will also allow to reduce the energy consumed in buildings to guarantee occupants' comfort due to the extension of the comfort ranges that currently neglect interaction effects between indoor environmental factors. Disentangling for the first time the complex relationship between daylight and indoor temperature, this research constitutes an additional step towards understanding interactions of indoor factors and contributes to the establishment of a comfortable and energy-efficient built environment.
Talking Point: We Shouldn't Saddle Labo VR With Unrealistic Expectations      Cache   Translate Page

Perhaps it’s time to think inside the box.

Nintendo’s long-rumoured foray into virtual reality with Labo: VR Kit has set some heads spinning with dreams of high-end experiences featuring all manner of Nintendo franchises. Imagine Mario Kart VR on Switch! they say. What about Animal Crossing VR! Where’s Metroid Prime Trilogy VR-astered?! Okay, we made up that last one, but we’re sure the idea must be on a forum somewhere.

We’ve already taken a look at the pros and the cons of Nintendo’s upcoming toe-dip into the world of VR, and while the company wisely kept the announcement low-key – releasing a press release with very little fanfare – the lack of game footage or simulated screenshots gives enthusiastic fans a blank canvas on which to scrawl their imaginings based on the more advanced VR experiences available elsewhere.
