|Citing A Breach Of Terms Of Service Vimeo Removes Church Account!!! Cache Translate Page|
Online congregation Vimeo is an online organization that allows users to create accounts for hosting, sharing, and streaming videos. With that being said, does a private company have the right to limit the content that streams through their service based on the companies beliefs? I honestly believe they do, just as a cake baker has the right to not bake a cake based on his/her belief. Recently, a group of conservative Christians held a conference that promoted their biblical view as it regards to homosexuality. The videos were hosted on Fairview Baptist Church of Edmond, Oklahoma’s Vimeo page. Citing a breach of terms of service, it's being reported that only were the videos of the conference taken down, but all of the sermons from that church that were hosted there.

We highly recommend to release Version 1 for an initial period of some days or weeks and at second phase, once the audience is accustomed with the successful shot we would advise to release Version 2 (Dunk). We trust that the missed shot which is followed by a massive dunk will tease the audience even more for the great game that is coming.

|The "Rajeff Fairy" Stopped By... Cache Translate Page|
Last Friday afternoon I was in the garage fixing bike tires when the UPS truck rolled into the driveway and the drive handed me a large package from ECHO Fly Fishing with all sorts of good stuff inside. Tim Rajeff is always super kind in making sure that I have all the latest and greatest fiberglass fly rods from their shop and with the recent release of the River Glass series, it'll be stellar to give them all a flex in the coming weeks.
When Tim Rajeff went back to the drawing board to conceptualize the River Glass series, he worked through their previous light line weight fiberglass offerings (which were split between two series) and picked out sweet spots in each line weight to then determine the best rod lengths. Add to the mix new S2 fibers in the construction and in the end, six models, covering two weight to five weight and lengths from 6'9" to 8'6", made the cut.
You don't need to listen to me talk the River Glass, you can listen to Tim talk about them instead...
The entire series is offered in colors Amber and Glacier and fly rods include a matching fiberglass rod tube. These fly rods will be really easy to travel with as the short two and three weight are three pieces and the rest of the line up are in four pieces. The River Glass line up is priced at $249.99 and come with the ECHO Lifetime Warranty.
Looking for a new two through five weight, consider the ECHO River Glass.
As as side note, also included in the box were two of the BRAVO fly reels (an 8/10 and a 10/12) which I think are quite a machine for less than $140 each. They are the perfect match on the Bad Ass Glass Quickshot fly rods that I'm using a ton as well. Now if Tim could just think up a cheap-o clicker fly reel for the River Glass series...

|Tack!

Tack!

|Stereo-photography: How iso800 works Cache Translate Page|
A colleague of ours once asked us what could possibly be the advantage of having two equally capable photographers at a wedding.
Two wedding photographers? That's our thing. Christophe and I have known eachother for longer than we can even remember. When we decided to bundle our forces on our shared passion for photography, iso800 was born.
Two photographers equals four eyes. Two different ways of seeing every situation and two times as much photograpic action. What you get is two fanatical photographers who gladly climb on, crawl under or squeeze in between everything that is between us and that perfect picture.
We believe in having fun.
We believe that people who have fun at their job, are better at their job.
We believe this makes all the difference.
And we are apparantly not alone. In december 2012, we invited a few of our customers to share their views on iso800. The result was a fantastic ego-trip (see video).
Thank you Lore & Ben, Brenda & Stef, Joke, Jens and Senne, Karen & Alano for your help and fantastic quotes!

Cache Translate Page|

TEATRO DEGLI ARCIMBOLDI,Viale dell'Innovazione, 20, 20126 Milano MI, Italia
BALLETTO di MILANO
LE MILLE E UNA NOTTE DI SHÉHÉRAZADE
Musica di Rimsky-Korsakov.
Coreografia Federico Mella e Alessandro Torrielli
Scene: Marco Pesta
Costumi: Evlegance Mode (Rabat)

|Why You Do Not Use Pluto.TV – the Best Cord-cutting App? Cache Translate Page|
Pluto TV, a video streaming service targeting cord cutters by offering a TV-guide like experience that connects you to hundreds of online channels, has raised $30 million in Series B funding, valuing the business at $140 million. The new funding comes from ProSieben of Germany, one of Europe’s largest independent media companies, and lifestyle media company Scripps Networks Interactive. The additional capital will help to fuel Pluto TV’s expansion into the European market, the company says.
Pluto TV is a free service that tries to mimic the cable box experience, only with Internet channels instead of traditional ones. Pluto’s website and apps offer dozens of channels, ranging from mainstream news to stand-up comedy to extreme sports, all strung together from web sources such as YouTube and Vimeo. There’s even an entire channel dedicated to cat videos (and another one for dogs). It has a desktop website and dedicated apps for Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, iOS, Android, and PC, and it also supports Chromecast.
Unlike other online streaming services, which also cater to those who still subscribe traditional television, Pluto TV from the start has more narrowly focused on acquiring consumers who are abandoning their cable and satellite TV subscriptions. However, instead of offering on-demand TV and movies like Netflix, Pluto TV attempts to replicate the TV experience through online streams that you can “tune into” much like TV broadcasting.
So where is Pluto TV getting all of this content?
As it turns out, Pluto TV is getting its content from the same places that cord cutters do. They’re supplying videos from YouTube, Vimeo, DailyMotion, and other streaming sites. All Pluto TV is doing is saving you the legwork of finding your next favorite show. They’re restoring the simplicity of channel surfing (without restoring your hefty cable bill).
That said, Pluto TV doesn’t only use freely available content. They also have a bunch of agreements with other content providers. In the U.S., the company has over 75 content partnerships with TV networks, studios, publishers and digital media companies, including Sky, NBC, A&E, CBSi, Bloomberg, Paramount and others.
On a basic level, using Pluto.TV is as simple as launching the app or heading to the website. The last channel you visited starts playing automatically, with a channel guide you can scroll through on the bottom half of the screen. Pluto’s website and mobile apps let you bookmark channels, so you can view your favorites without sifting through the full guide.
The web and PC versions also include a save button, so you can go back and re-watch anything from Pluto.TV’s linear programming schedule. It’s basically just a bookmark, but in this context it’s sort of like a descendant of DVR.
You may download applications for may platforms, or watch live through the Web Interface without downloading any software to your electronic devices: http://pluto.tv/watch/newsy

|Quinta do youtube #97: Artigo 13 e os direitos autorais Cache Translate Page|| |

Viaggiando in ogni modo, a ogni ora.
Infine, tanti auguri Elio

|Interpretando a Chopin Cache Translate Page|

|Webinar: Deploying Django—from zero to production in 20 minutes Cache Translate Page|
I held this webinar two years ago—28 February 2017.
We start from zero: no server, no DNS, only a Django project in development. In 20 minutes we have a Ubuntu server running our Django project with nginx, Gunicorn and SQLite. Even if you only know Windows, you will get a good feeling of these technologies and understand why deploying on GNU/Linux is usually the most cost-effective solution. We have some fun making requests altogether in order to see whether the server can take it, and we also see whether SQLite is up to the task. Less than 30 minutes of presentation and lots of Q&A (total duration one hour).
These are questions that were asked and the times in the video in which I answer
Different settings for development and production environment
Managing passwords and secret keys
Is /etc/opt a standard? I have seen other locations like /usr/local/etc
The FHS isn’t entirely clear. It says you can put third-party applications
Deployment using fabric or any other python packages
Using CDN for serving static(AWS etc.)
Why use supervisor and crontab with nginx and gunicorn?
What is the difference between a non-system user and a system user?
(60m33s) System users are intended to run programs, whereas normal users are people. Because of the –system parameter, adduser will assign a user id less than 1000, which is only a convention for knowing that this is a system user. Otherwise there isn’t much difference
Use nginx instead of apache?
What are you thoughts on using a network port vs unix sockets?

|Monkey's in Thailand! Cache Translate Page|
Well this blog is exactly a year late, but what can we do.. it was to be expected!
Thailand = lots of attractive girls. Note a large amount of them are boys unfortunately. There were plenty even on our flight into Thailand.
Patong is kind of like a big dirty sest pool. Massages, cheap crap, madness, we lived like kings. You can get anything in Patong.
Some people get more than they bargain for....
Yes it's a boy..
We Caught a death bus ride to Tonsai in Krabi. A few near head on misses and some strange stops along the way in which mass amounts of other tourists tricked into the same bus scam were switched around, encouraged to buy their shop food and then crammed into less buses.
Tonsai = dirt bag climbing heaven..
Imagine a whole heap of climbing weirdos living super cheapo in the jungle climbing all day. When the climbers aren´t climbing they are either juggling, slack lining, smoking pot, drinking mushroom shakes and chai tea, doing yoga on the beach, fire twirling or reading books in hammocks or on the pillow platforms built under the palm trees on the beach.
Poeple thought Beric was a yoga instructor and started clanning together and following him around. Suckers.
Classic dirt bag behavior:
Steve turning our sink into a toilet bowl:
Beric reverting to his primal instincts and form
We had a reunion with the famous Gustav from Africa and his wife and son.
American girls like Tim Tams:
Our gorgeous friend Arielle!!
These guys were the kings of the village:
If you ever go climbing in Tonsai, we recommend climbing 'Rolling Thunder´at generator wall. 7C+/28, involves a glorious dyno and was one of Beric's best/favorite sends for the year! Beric climbing this route features in the movie way down below.
Steve also crushed an 8a named 'Call me Helmut', also features in the movie below.
Unfortunately we had to end the year of madness and go back to reality. We turned up at the airport looking like bums, we prepared or rather unprepared for weeks leading up to our arrival home i.e we didn't shower, wash our clothes etc for a couple of weeks..
Our lovely families:
We celebrated with some Aussie food i.e large portions of meat. You can never have enough Steak.
Our dads rejoicing
In summary we all walked straight back into all our jobs which we had in 2010. Beric´s boss described the concept of him taking the year off as not being an issue and being no different to him getting pregnant.
This glorious Thailand video will do the rest of the talking, Africa video to come next:
|Cyprus - Land of The Ioannou Cache Translate Page|
A.K.A Land of the Steven
Well actually it should be land of the Stavro as Beric discovered back in Kaly. "Theres this crazy mafia guy, s.... st..., I don't know his name
Is it Stavro?
What how did you know?
Thats my name.
I've known you for 24 years and never heard that..."
Yep I was named after my Papou (grandfather) Stavro who moved to Australia over 60 years ago from the small mediterranian country of Cyprus. As is the case with many immigrants he was seeking prosperity and ultimately a better life than what was available at home during the time. He eventually moved Ayr where he met my grandmother and had a cane farm, then later moved to Townsville. Its interesting to think that I wouldn't even be here if he hadn't made that enourmous journey to the other side of the world all those years ago.
Cyprus is familiar territory for me, I first visited way back when I was just five years old. I only remember a couple of things from that trip, one was a nasty encounter with a prickly pear cactus. These things are covered in tiny sharp hairs as I discovered when I grabbed one back then. I knew better this time though.
In 2005, just out of school I returned on a 6 week cultural exchange program with a group of other Cypriot descendants from all around Australia and South Africa. This was my longest ever overseas trip (until now) and really planted the seed for more exploration and travel. We learnt greek at the University of Cyprus and toured the country discovering the culture. Then we all separated to spend time with our families around the country.
Even with the previous visits I had not yet met all of my family and our first destination was Nicosia where we stayed with my Papou's niece Souli, her husband Andreas and their two boys George and Constantino.
We were greeted with a much welcome feast and this very appropriate doormat, Beric and I have been talking this sort of jibberish for years.
After weeks of solid climbing our first task was to crash and burn... An enforced rest day on the couch along with greek coffee and sweets from my Thea (aunty) Yourgoula were just what we needed.
For the first time in cyprus I had a car and freedom to go anywere I wanted. Let the arbitrary driving misions begin! We wend to Agia Napa, the most famous tourist beach in Cyprus and then Cavo Greko to scope out some potential climbing.
We spent some time in the center of Nicosia and walked along the UN patrolled border area.
Cyprus has seen countless conflicts throughout the centuries, mostly due to its highly strategic position between Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa. The Egyptians, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans and the British have all had power one stage. Even today despite a booming tourist industry and high living standards it remains under conflict.
In 1974 the Turkish army invaded cyprus and took control of the northern side of the island. All Greek Cypriots were forced to leave their houses and posessions and became refugees in their own country. Since that time the capital Nicosia has been divided in two and separated by a Green Line which is patrolled by UN soldiers. Evidence of the conflict is everywhere around the border with decrepit old buidings and bullet hole ridden walls. Nicosia is the only remaining 'divided capital' in the whole world.
The only country to actually recognise the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" is Turkey. The place doesn't even exist according the the rest of the world. And another thing, whats with the huge Turkish flag on the hill overlooking the southern part of Cyprus? Highly arrogant and disrespectful to the people who lost everything in the invasion.
At night Andreas would take us out on walks with his Cronies from the E4 Club, a group of crazy old men that like to participate in extreme sports. We like that. Andreas always had words of wisdom, mostly to do with why Nomad shouldn't be trapped with a girlfriend. Highly amusing for Beric and I haha.
"FRESH LEMON!" and "FIRE!" Andreas would yell at Beric randomly for some reason. Who are we to argue.
It was Souli's birthday while we were there and we had a surprise party.
Even Dora the dog got in on the celebrations.
Andreas and Souli took us out for the famous Souvlaki at Bablyon Pub.
It was great to meet you Souli and Andreas, thanks for having us and I hope to see you again soon!
After a couple of days we drove to the other side of the country (about 90 minutes!) to the village of Pegeia where my Papou was born and most of my family still lives.
At the beach we met Andreas, the king of Coral Bay. He is down here 365 days a year and is always keen to show vistors around.
We went to see my Papou's sister, Thea Thespina and my cousins for lunch in the village. We feasted on fresh chicken and rabbit from the cages outside the kitchen.
While in Pegeia we were lucky enough to stay in my Thea Irini's apartment for the week. Thanks again for the wonderful hospitality!
Andreas took us on a 4wd adventure out to see the Akamas Peninsular on the far western side of Cyprus. This is where they used to run the Cyprus Rally before the whole area became a national park. We walked through Avakas Gorge and then went for a swim at Lara Bay
Andreas showing us his banana farm:
One night my cousin George took us to to see Stavro at his new club, Neos.
Stavro has a hotel, two clubs and an amusement park and is soon running for Mayer in Pegeia. He is married with two sons and a new baby daughter Irini and yet he still seems to have plenty of free time.
I was lucky enough to stay at Stavro's hotel back in 2005 and it was great to catch up again. Hope to see you in Australia one day soon!
My youngest cousin Irini:
After a good few days of rest we were keen to climb again so we drove up to a crag called Gerakopetra near the Village of Ineia. This area has spectacular views over the Akamas Peninsular and is a type of sandstone similar to the Grampians or Arapiles in Australia. The classic was Nomos Tis Varititas (The Laws of Gravity)
We spent a few days climbing here and at another crag in the Dhiarizos river bed. The theme of this place was Slab Action. Lets just say the angle of the rock was a little less than vertical and even Nomad A.K.A The Slab King was shut down. English people will bolt any featureless crap they can find apparently.
My Thea Maritsa and Theo Neofito have a citrus farm and no trip to Cyprus would be complete without a tour.
Theo Nick and his family in Pegeia
The Troodos Mountains are the highest point in Cyprus, reaching over 2000m. We drove up there one day and we found an totally different environment with large pine forests that reminded us of California. They even have a ski field up there. In winter you can ski and then be swimming on a mediterranian beach less than two hours later!
Wise guy hey?
That afternoon we visited Petra Tou Romio, the birthplace of Aphrodite.
They don't seem to approve of our climbing activities around here but Nomad and I tried to get to some rock.
The sea was a bit rough and we didn't manage to climb it anyway.
Meanwhile beric was kept amused collecting rocks... He spent nearly an hour looking for a love heart shaped rock??
He became highly protective of his prized rocks but eventually had to cull them down from like 30 to just four. Madness.
Near Pegeia in the town of Pafos there is a collection of ancient mosaics and ruins
We also found some Italian type ice cream.
On our last day in Pegeia we went to a soccer match with the local Pegeia team up against Pafos. We assumed this would be like any other stadium we just went into the nearest entrance. Rookie error. The stadium is divided into two halves and fans are separated by barbed wire fences to prevent riots... We were on the opposition side and wearing the wrong colours! We made a quick retreat and found my cousins on the correct side.
No blog would be complete without a photo of Beric and a random girl, so here it is:
We met these two at the good old Blazing Saddles Pub in Coral Bay.
On our last day we went to visit my friend Marios and his family for lunch. Marios had been living in Townsville studying at JCU for the past 8 years and only recently returned to Cyprus. At their house Marios had an amazing collection of insects and preserved animals. Marios' Dad, Aristos is an expert taxidermist and the collection of animals was unbelievable. One of the most impressive things we have seen in all our travels, it was like a private museum!
It was lovely to meet you Aristos, Chrystalla and Stavroula and great to see you again Marios!
The media circus never ends on this trip, check out this movie:
That pretty much sums up our Cyprus adventure, it was great to see everyone again and I'm sure I'll be back soon for trip number five!
|Kalymnos Island! Goats, Kaly King and Tufas! Cache Translate Page|
After a quick flight from Athens we landed at the tiny airport of Kalymnos!
It's built precariously on the top of a mountain and the runway seemed to drop away straight over a cliff... not much flat ground over here, just the way the monkeys like it! Kalymnos is one of the biggest and best climbing destinations in the world at the moment.
There are over 1700 climbs to choose from with a couple of hundred new ones going up every year, the amount of quality rock here is unbelievable. The limestone here has amazing features like tufas, stalactites and pockets that allow climbing on outrageously overhanging terrain. In any other place the spectacular large caves would probably be highly protected national treasures. Thankfully no one on this little Greek island seems to care and all the locals are highly supportive of our ridiculous pursuits.
Kalymnos was once famous for its divers who would collect sea sponges, but since the 80s this industry has been in decline and tourism has taken over. Climbing tourism especially is the big thing at the moment and Kaly is extremely well set up for climbers. We checked in to Vourous Palace, a hotel run by Stavro, a Mafia like character also in charge of a nice Italian restaraunt. He had a cute niece working at the restaraunt, but it seemed best to stay away or we might have been swimming with the sponges with a pair of concrete boots...
On our first day of climbing we visited the spectacular Grande Grotta. This was the biggest and most featured cave we had ever seen, the rock seemed to drip with huge stalactites everywhere.
Over the next few days we ticked classics like DNA, Cyclops and Rastapopolous Extension. It became clear very quickly that this was the best sport climbing all year and three weeks would not be enough!
One afternoon We went on a recon mission to check out all the studios in the area and after a few hours found a new place to stay. This place had it all, a spacious room, ocean views, wifi, and a crazy Greek family yelling and fighting all the time across the courtyard. Highly entertaining.
All the way along the main street of Massouri there are minimarts but the only one for us was run by the wise and insightful Antonis. We were loyal customers and With every purchase you would get a little Antonis wisdom, or a story about his crazy past life of travelling. He would also give us gifts like weird herbs for cooking.
All the ladies in the street took a real liking to Steve, must be the Greek look:
Saki's never sleeps
On the 17th September we waited in anticipation for the arrival of the Kaly King and Queen, Lee & Sam Cujes!
THE KALY KING:
THE KALY QUEEN
They are practically royalty around here, having stayed for several months at a time over the years, everyone seems to know them! We have been close friends with Lee & Sam since our infamous Vietnam trip in 2009 and they have given us so much inspiration and advice over the years! It was great to catch up and climb together again.
Sam utilised our rope bag as a jumper:
Welcome to Lee's office:
Lee and Sam run climbing camps to all sorts of glorious locations around the world, including Kaly. These camps are for anyone with any climbing level or experinece so if your interested in going to Kaly, learning to climb and recieving some world class coaching check out Lee and Sam's website:
This is Lee in action shooting some media of his clients:
Lee also brought with him some highly prized Upskill kneebar pads for Steve & Beric, we soon discovered that these are essential for climbing at Kaly. They allow you to rest, hands free, in crazy positions and make the steep climbing so much easier! Essentially you jam your knee under a rock feature and without pads this can seriously hurt.
Beric managed to actually get a kneebar for EVERY single bolt clip on the classic climb Ivi (7a+), Needless to say this made the climb a piece of cake. Kneebar arousal shots:
There's more photos here if that wasn't enough for you:
The kneebar pads come highly recommended for a trip to Kaly, Thailand or anywhere else with steep featured rock! Seriously, if you want to climb harder and better you MUST get a pair of these babies!! Check them out here:
FYI www.upskillclimbinggear.com is Lee's Queensland online climbing store and is the place to go if you need climbing gear.
Another extremely useful item Lee stocks is the CU belay glasses. We bought a pair of these and they have been brilliant. We highly recommend them if you do alot of climbing. They are a prism lense that allows you to fully watch your climber as you belay whilst looking straight ahead. These glasses will not only save your neck from being wrecked and sore, but will also allow you to belay more safely as you can comfortable and attentively watch your climber the whole time. Check it:
Lee & Sam took us on an adventure to check out the areas Illiada and The Beach. At the start of the track down to the beach we encountered the "goatmobile." We were sure a bunch of no good punk ass teenage goats were responsible for trashing this car and joy riding here...
THE GOAT MOBILE
Down at the beach Beric found a perfectly good pair of thongs amongst the trash. Free thongs dammit!! He's been wearing em ever since..
Our dinner most nights was the famous 2 Euro Gyroow (Beric) / Yiro (steve). Beric's Aussie accent sometimes makes European words virtually unrecognisable. These Gyroow's had it all, pork or chicken, salad, tzaziki all wrapped in a pita and with a side of chips. Now tell me thats not a proper meal.
This was the cheapest and best dinner we had found all year, perfect dirtbag climber food! We became well known at our favourite Yiro shop, the record was seven nights in a row. The other competition is the 'spookeye man'. This guy had very red eyes and a crazy limp. Real spookeye like.
Now we must admit, while Sam and Lee were around we did splurge out and get some restaurant meals, but no entrees.
The island is rocky, barren and harsh and most animals would struggle to survive. One is far superior though and highly adapted to the conditions.
Goats rule this island, just like the bears of Yosemite. At the crag one big old goat would constantly harass climbers for food and became highly agitated when challenged. You would turn your back and then suddenly the goat would appear standing still in amongst the packs and climbers. Trying to blend in or something. It became clear that we would need to come to some sort of agreement with this goat. See the video below for the result...
Here's some photos of old Topdeck the goat. Topdeck thought we couldn't see him. Cleverly hiding behind that rock.
Everytime you turned your back he would edge closer and closer then stand still. Well I got news for you Topdeck, your not fooling anyone.
I (Steve) disappeared on a side mission to the little island of Kastellorizo, a 10 hour ferry ride from Kalymnos. My great grandparents were from this island which is about as far from the Greek mainland as you can go and only a few kilometers from Turkey. My lovely relatives Nick and Vasilo have a house there and I was lucky enough to stay with them for a few days. Thanks for the hospitality and I hope to see you again soon! I spent my time learning about the history of the island and exploring the hills and rugged coastline. I also scoped some potential undeveloped climbing of course... I'm sure I'll be back soon to explore further!
While Steve was gone, I (Beric) hung out with Sam and Lee. We had a glee old time.
Lee took us on a wild goose chase to find a new secret climbing crag called the 'secret garden'. Sam and I faithfully followed Lee into the inhabitable baron hills..
This was the first tree I saw on Kaly, well I think it was a tree:
Our mission payed off. We found the secret crag. The climbing was good but "no comment, "judge for yourself"..
Lee got excited and started soloing in his sand shoes..
We came back of course and climbed the crap out of the place!
Lee, Sam and I also chilled out at Pirates beach sipping frappes. Lee has been surviving off triple frappe bypasses for many years now.. Arrghgghhgh caffeine! sugar!
Woooo! Scooter gangs!!!
That night we were also treated to the annual street party. There was free traditional Greek food and dancing. Now I'm no Chris Brown, but I gave it a go. It's a shame that Steve wasn't there as they train these Stevens to Greek dance at a young age in the Townsville community. My gorgeous friend Thailia was stopping cars on the street with her moves.
On our 3rd last climbing day we went to Odyssey and had a crack at Polifemo (7c / 27). There were some kick ass American's climbing there named Kevin, Tom and Jaima. We hope to meet up with you all in the USA soon!
Our Queensland climbing friend Danny gettin some kneebar action:
On our second last day we went the Grande Grotta, back where it all began. We were both thrashed after climbing extreme overhangs for 3 weeks straight, yet Steve somehow managed a personal best send with a flash of Priapos (7c / 27)
Our final morning before flying out was meant to be a much needed rest day... but about 10 minutes after waking up Beric cracked and convinced Steve to slog up the hill one last time. Unfinished business you see. Beric sent Ivi (7a+/24) which went down quickly with at least 8 Kneebars thrown in for good measure:
Even though we were in Kaly for 3 weeks, it wasn't until the last couple of days we decided to do some filming. In a crazy last minute frenzy, we managed to capture some media of the madness... With Nomad's location still completely unknown we only had the two of us. This makes filming very difficult as you need 3 people i.e someone to climb, belay the climber and film the footage. So we set up some dodgy tripods with duct tape, infact the climbing seen at the secret garden was done purely using this method. Danny and our American friends also lent a hand belaying for Polifemo and Priapos. Thanks fellow climbers! So here it is, the highly anticipated Kaly movie:
Kalymnos Island Movie
|All Hail the French Chicken Lord! Cache Translate Page|
A quick re-cap. Steve was in Australia for his sister's wedding. And Nomad was stuck with me (Beric) for another week.
After Nomad and I ran with the bulls in Pamplona we drove about 8 hours to Verdon. This cost us about 100 Euro in tolls which really hurt after we lived like kings on this much money in Mexico for a whopping 16 days.
So, Verdon is a massive gorge with amazing limestone. Surprise! If you've noticed, we only go places to climb things.. Access at Verdon is as easy as it gets as there are roads which run above the cliffs. Despite this many of the bolts we saw were horrendous. The spring scenery around Southern France is magical..
After one night in Verdon we relocated to a new Couch surfing host living in a cottage near Gap. Her name was Eve and she was (another) crazy cat lady. Eve was studying to be a cheese farmer. We learned quickly that French people eat CHEESE, wine and bread ALOT.
CHEESE FOR BREAKFAST, LUNCH AND DINNER
Eve had a killer vegetable garden and Nomad and I were in heaven with all the fresh tasty food available.
Eve also owned chickens!!! They were stashed in a glorious chicken coop out the. This coop had it all. Some sort of BIRD sanctuary next to a river in the woods.
Over the years Steve and I have always worshiped chicken coops. They are always an impressive construction of bent wire, squeif doors, lopsided wood planks and improvised materials. I have a theeeory that chickens are super geniuses plotting unspeakable things...
The Spadge master.. Reminded me of Bloomy..
The Chocolate master..
Eve taught me a sweet recipe for Ratatouille.. and By coincidence Tour de France was actually running in Gap during our visit. Eve took us to have a look.
We couldn't see much except a bunchy of weirdo 60 year old's in tight road bike clothing. You know, the type that hang around at cafe's on Sunday mornings.
Next we moved to our 2nd couch surfing host (Sandra) who lived right in the centre of Gap.
Sandra had two gorgeous horses and some nut bag friends that I went to a party with, these French people had some crazy instruments and traditions..
Our third and final Couch host for Southern France was a hip dude called Manoo. He lived as close as you can get to Ceuse which is a mega famous climbing area. It was only a 2 hour walk up a steep hill from the back of his house! Gold :)
The walk to Ceuse was enjoyable though as there was a lot of flowers and bees, one of which comically stung the Nomad.
This is the view from manoo's window and some shots from the walk to Ceuse..
We brought Manoo out of rock climbing retirement:
Manoo cooks a mean ratatouille:
Girls Manoo is single.. for now..
After Southern France Nomad and I (Beric) went to Paris in search of new love. We drove in a 5pm peak our traffic right into the middle of Paris which was a nightmare. We parked our car in front of security camera and it stayed right there for the next week.
In Paris we stayed with our lovely friend Anne-Claire. We met Anne on the train to Machu Picchu back in February.
Anne-Claire lives in a sweet apartment right behind the main action street of Paris near Moulin rouge.
The next day Nomad and I went to see the famous Louve museum. The Mona Lisa was a swarming mess of tourists with Camera's and I do not recommend that you go out of your way to see it. The painting was much much smaller than I imagined and behind glass. I also heard a conspiracy theory from a beautiful art student in Rome that it is a fake! I assume this is linked to the chickens.
This genius had a fire in a shopping trolley and was cooking corn in a bucket. The police weren´t happy for some reason.
On the Champ Elysees Street we spotted a line of people which was longer than the line for the Eifel tower. We went over to inspect and found these wacko's were gathering to enter an Abercrombie & Fitch shop?? The gate was guarded by two King SMO's..
Anne-Claire and I went to see the Moulin rouge which I would recommend to you all if you can afford it.I couldn't but my Mum told me to go so I went..
Cabaret shows aside. The legendary Steven arrived back from Townsville! The Monkeys Reunite!
Steve didn't stay with us though. Anne Claire's friend Zabeth let Steve stay with her as there would be more room.
Now let me tell you about Zabeth. This chick is rocking! ohh and she literally is a famous rock star. I was highly impressed to learn that she has spent time with Metallica, she was under the same record label as them and a few years ago they both released an album on the same day. She got to go to a personal concert with them and an after party which I was extremely jealous to here about. All hail King Hetfield and Zabeth:
Zabeth was kind enough to show us around Paris and she even organised for a chef friend of hers to cook us frog's legs! Eating frog's legs was a child hood dream of mine and despite what you here they are very difficult to find around Paris unless you know someone.
If you go to Paris I also recommend you see the Catacombs. This is an underground tunnel full of human bones. All macabre and sadistic like. As with all tourist attractions in Paris go half an hour before they open. Or you will be waiting in line for 2 hours like a sucker.
I didn't mention before, but Anne-Claire also lives right near all of the Sex shops red light district in Paris.
Steve and I got scammed by a pimp good and proper. We got an awesome deal from him to enter this crazy intruiging building. 2 for 1 entry! But it turns out that they just kept demanding more and more money for services we weren't interested in. We just wanted to have a drink and look inside dammit. But these wacko prostitues surrounded us and demanded we pay for drinks we apparenlty ordered for them. 35 Euro later we ecaped the pestering prostitutes back into the real world on the street. Let that be a lesson!
Steve and I are grumpy old men now.. Bah humbug! You no good punk ass hoolagins! go to school, get haircut and proper job.
Zabeth gave me a glass of Absinth in a curved glass that you can't put down without it toppling. This glass is a dangerous invention. I don't remember what else happened after this in Paris..
Nomad Status update:
Nomaaads gone maaad! Through some brief facebook chats Steve and I have planned to rendezvous with the Nomad at a hotel in Kalymonos Island in Greece soon. From what Steve and I can tell, he has really cleaned his act up lately. His facebook display pic now shows a more groomed and distinguished looking Nomad. I assume this is some sort of preparation for the arrival of his mother Rosemary in 2 weeks.
Today's Classic quote:
You can't take me back to Townsville, you can't make me go back there!!
As promised here is movie I put together of Southern France. There is no footage of North France as our camera paid the price horse riding in Southern France. I made this movie during the same car trip that I also made the running with the bull's movie. After 8 hours in Euro traffic staring at a PC and editing crappy footage, my vision and sanity was a little frayed. This may reflect.. And for those of you that don't know, the bins in alley ways are full of all sorts of good food thrown out by Restaurants. I'm not paying for food like a sucker!
NEW MOVIE: All Hail the French Chicken Lord!
|Monkeys Run with the Bulls in Spain! Cache Translate Page|
Lets just start by saying Spaniards are completely insane. Even more wacko than Bloomy...
Now I know Steve and I put up a blog last night but I (Beric) had nothing better to do than right another blog and make a movie on the 9 hour road trip from Croatia to Arco in Italy. So here it is.
An update on the Nomad status, he has completely disappeared again. Steve and I saw him in Croatia a few weeks ago. Rumor has it he was in Morocco and may now in Portugal? But we really have no idea.
Anyways. After Nomad and I dropped Steve off at Barcelona airport, we made our way to San Sebastian. Basque Country!
We stayed here with 2 kick ass couch surfing dudes names Paulo and Jokin.
San Sebastian is amazing and is conveniently located 1 hour away from Pamplona. It was no coincidence that we were there in San Sebastian. From the 6th until th 14th of July Every year the San Fermin is held in Pamplona a.k.a running with the bulls.
San Sebastian was to be our less crowded base point for the duration of the festival. Yes, for some silly reason Nomad and I had planned many months ago to participate in the madness and lunacy of actually Running with the bulls.
Here are some shots around San Sebastian:
They like to swim in pools at the beach in Spain. All most as logical as Bloomy..
There is an average climbing area near San Sebastion. Nomad and I went and climbed here in the afternoon straight after we ran with the bulls. We did this to celebrate our survival.
Paulo making me proud:
Jokin after a good send:
The classic Euro Belay. Seen as common practice throughout Spain.
And this is a crazy cow.
NOW. So what's this running with the bulls all about? Well essentially for 7 days straight the Spaniards party like animals in the streets. Please note that onwards from here I have used some other peoples photos so that this blog is more interesting. As always, you will see my name (C.Beric) water marked in the bottom right hand corner on any of the photos that are mine and aren't stolen..
Another thing to know is that the masses of crazy people running are just as dangerous as the bulls themselves. Fearing for their lives the people in the crowd are just as likely to trample you as they shove and claw their way to safety. If you fall down or trip its game over!
You can choose where you start along the track. Most people start at the Town Hall Clock.
The bull run finishes at a bottle neck into a big Coliseum.
If you start from Town Hall you will not beat the first bulls into the Coliseum as they run extremely fast. You do not want to beat the bulls into the Coliseum as this is seen as extremely cowardly and the huge crowd inside the coleseum will boo and throw beer bottles at you. Seriously.
If you start to close to the beginning of the track where the bulls are released you won't make it into the Coliseum though. The bulls are too fast to keep up with and they shut the doors to the Coliseum after the 2nd group of bulls enters.
The important thing is not to get stuck between the bulls or in a human pile up at dead mans corner!
Nomad and I came to an agreement that We would both run with the bulls the next morning. Waking up that morning wasn't as easy for Nomad as it was for me..
I put on my San Fermin outfit. White pants, white shirt, red scarf around the waist and neck. With out these you stand out like dog balls in the crowd and I highly recommend you buy the outfit if you plan on going to the San Fermin.
Nomad and I strategically decided to start the run just in front of the clock. To signal that the bulls have been released into the street and loud fire work goes off at 8am sharp. Word had it that the biggest bull running on our day was 700kg!
No problem for an Aussie. Although, an Australian man was seriously gored the day before and put in intensive care according to the news. Never mind that.
The crowd was very unsettled and anxious. I was on edge and ready to spring into action. Nomad was ready to go 'spook-eye'. Everyone was intensely listening for the firework. Fuk*n BANG!! There was a loud crack and everything broke into complete mayhem.
People were frantically climbing walls and fighting to get into the larger doorsteps for protection. Nomad and I were relieved to make it safely past dead mans corner. The crowd in the balconies above came alive and we knew the bulls where close behind. Suddenly vibrations started to rattle up through my whole body. I pushed my way through the sea of white and red lunatics. In amidst a cacophony of screams, galloping hooves and sounding horns, everything was a complete blur of madness.
Bulls started flashing past my left side. Nomad and I managed to keep up with them for 3o seconds or so. We didn't stop running though as the next 6 bulls were still behind us and you can never be sure if there is a stray that isn't keeping up with the group. I was elbowing, shoving and literally jumping over people to make my way through the less fit crowd as fast as possible. My adrenalin was pumping and I could see a scraggy deranged nomad to my side who was just as aggressive, shoving his way through the crowd like a lunatic! Somehow we managed to keep together for the whole run.
We made it into the Coliseum which was absolutely mind blowing. The crowd was going ballistic!
The last 6 bulls blasted through behind us and then they shut the Coliseum doors. This was where the fun began.
People started to gather around a closed door and lay on the ground. Intruiged Nomad and I went closer to have a look. WHOOOSH! The doors flung open and a raging bull came charging out and lanuched itself over the people laying on the ground.
One by one they released 'baby bulls' with corks on their horns through this door. Sounds nice and safe right? WRONG. These 'baby' bulls weighed like 300kg, were extremely fast and aggravated. I assume they jabbed them with some sort of drug before hand. They basically run around through the crowd smashing people in the air like bowling pins.
The bull I slapped on the ass actually ran straight at me and I had to jump the bull ring barrier to escape it. Only seconds later, no word of a lie, the same fired up bull managed to jump the barrier into the crowd about 10 m's away from me! All hell broke loose and I had to fight to get back into the bull ring which was now the "safe" area to be. This happens from time to time apparently:
We celebrated surviving the bull run by going rock climbing as I talked about before. Which is a far safer activity right??
In the evening each day after the bull race they kill the bulls in a bull fight. Nomad and I went to one Bull fight. Bull fighting isn't exactly humane, but it is very traditional for the Spanish people and the atmosphere is like nothing else I have ever seen.
Nomad and I befriended all the Spanish people around us who kindly shared with us large amounts of food and sangria which they were stockpiling in eskies.
I have put together a short movie of the whole event which is below.
The footage of the bull race itself and the corked bulls in the bull ring smashing people came from YouTube. I was unalbe to film this part. I was not carrying my camera during the race or corked bull dodging as this was no media event. I was in lunatic mode and needed both hands for elbowing and evading death etc.. The run footage is from the actual race on day 4 in 2011 except for one small part where someone gets smashed at death corner. This was from a 2007 race. It was a 'bullzeye' shot.. ah.. ah.. ah.. ah..
PLEASE NOTE that the bull fights are gory and violent so you may not actually want to watch this.
Monkeys Run with the Bulls in Spain! from 3 Lost Monkeys on Vimeo.
Now that Nomad and I have run with the bulls, thankfully we will never have to it again. It's ticked from the list!
But in all seriousness, you must go to the San Fermin if you ever get the chance. No bull..
|Riglos Fiesta De Los Monkeys Cache Translate Page|
After Rodlellar, our next stop was Riglos. One can never be sure if we were actually ever in Rodellar though??! You may notice that the text in this blog is a bizzare combination of Nomad facts and Beric insanity, some sort of absurd hybrid.
After reading a kick ass tip report from Lee Cujes about Riglos, we were pretty keen to head there to check it out. The town of Riglos is tiny with only a small shop, restaurant, refugio and no spadge whatsoever. Rafiki was not impressed.
The conglomerate formation sat just outside our window. In the twilight it looked brilliant and daunting.
Our plan was to repeat Fiesta de los Biceps a 9 pitch 250m 7a that came highly recommended from our friend Lee. After a quick glance at the topo, the line was plainly obvious. A snaking path of lighter rock (due to traffic) and chalk was visible from the window! All we did was memorise the pitch grades!
Riglos is at a lower elevation than Rodellar so the days were much hotter, so we had to start very early for the route. Beric wasn't keen on the early start for the route so he was the media man, filming and photographing from the distance. We had been going hard for days now and got very little sleep that night due to the punk ass noisy teenagers next door. Damn hooligins.
It was a 5am start and Beric was disgusted when the alram went off. We took minimal water and sun protection, counting on that we could avoid the sun. 16 draws, 1 water bottle and 1 rope and we were off. We swung leads and Steve was first. The first belay was a mess of old, rusty undersized bolts.
Nomad struggled on the 2nd pitch due to a lack of sleep. At this point he was a little worried he would ruin the onsight attempt. Steve was responsible for the crux (3rd) pitch which he onsighted no worries. Climbing 7a was very difficult at 7:30 in the morning and was made even more challenging for Nomad by a phone call from his Mum mid crux, which he answered. After a few small crimps he was up at the belay. We could see the sun breaking over the hills in the distance and beginning to cover the top of the route. It was a race against the clock to prevent dehydration!
Meanwhile, Beric was trying to concentrate on filming while a French girl moaned and ranted French jibberish through the open window on the balcony. Something about satisfaction and pleasure. All will be revealed in the movie below. Pitch after pitch we slowly onsighted this beast. All of the pitches were extremely pumpy due to the nature of the rock. Rocks the size of tennis balls to basketballs are glued precariously together with a natural 'cement' creating a maze of open holds. Without chalked holds we would have been toast! Almost all of the pitches are overhanging, especially the 6th and 7th. Steve did a mighty job sending the 7th pitch which weighed in around 6c+. During the morning the local church bell rang every hour which helped us keep pace! After Nomad finished leading the 8th it was all over as the top pitch was only a grade 4. Ten minutes later we were at the top around 10:30! We had made it with a little water to spare. A windy walk back down and we'd completed it in a refugio to refugio time of 5.5 hours.
Nomad did the first pitch which was probably the best climbing on the whole route. From there it all went downhill. Just as we expected standard conglomerate to be. Fiesta de los Biceps was an exception. This was horrible. Loose gulley's, run-outs, vegetation, chimneying and dodgy fixed gear:
The only advantage of this horror show is that is was in shade the whole time. When we started to get closer to the summit the vulturous Birds were amassing! waiting for us to fall to our deaths. Devilish slaves of the Chris Bird himself.
At the summit was a loose collection of three pitons and a wire cable. Two of them were completely loose and the third had been pulled out. Nomad clipped it all together and hoped that the wire was connected to something tangible.
BOMBER!! Upon Steve's arrival he tried to hammer in the third piton with a rock while Beric climbed up. This was a nice surprise at the summit.
Now, here is another crumb movie for you greedy bastards. Please note, Beric is now the TOM Evans of this town. For those of you who don't know, Tom Evans is the king rock climbing stalker photographer of Yosemite. Please excuse that commentary was not provided for the first section of the Fiesta Del Biceps footage as Beric needed to be super stealthy on the Balcony so as not to give away his position......
Next we went to Barcelona. The GPS worked. We were lucky to have some Couch surfing Hosts for 2 nights right in the center of Barcelona next to La Rambla. Their names were Vicente and Perdro's. We didn't meet Pedro until 5 minutes before we left his house on the last day. Pedro's house was a happening place, conveniently located above a magic shop and occupied a full floor of an old school sky scraper. Loaded full of secret rooms, bizarre ornaments and personalities. Nomad slept on a bouldering mat and
Beric made friends with an Indian...
1kg tuna tins! what more could you ask for..
The next day we headed out to see La Rambla where a whole gang of scam artists reside. They will try to trick you out of 50 euro a pop with their cup and ball game. The people winning the game in the crowd are all part of the scam. You have been warned. The food market there was amazing - thanks Donna Beric
Please note, this girl above is welcome to photo bomb my shots anytime she wants..
We wandered down and saw the marina shopping centre, a very unnatural array of expense and glamour built on a man-made island next to the luxury yachts. Following this we caught the tube to see Gaudi's Sagrada Familia, a highlight for any architect. I can't explain it and I won't try and begin to. Just see it
for yourselves damn it.
The last day in Barcelona we negotiated with a good Euro parking and then took Steve to the Airport and dropped him off.
Good riddance Steve. And don't come back. I've been trying to loose that bum for 24 years!
|Rodellar is NOT Rodellar! Cache Translate Page|
After a total absence from any input to the blog whatsoever, Nomad has decided to contribute to the absolute nonsense with a few paragraphs. We still haven't managed to get him to help with the making of the movies, editing of the photos and blog upload process yet. Which we must say is an extremely tedious and painful process that drives us to the point of insanity sometimes. We are done with computers and ready to go outside and live our lives.Anyway, this is what the Nomad had to say:
"After flying from Mallorca, Steve and Chris picked up a brand new car courtesy of a French Government arrangment with auto manufacturers which afforded us a shiny Peugeot Tepee with only 5km on the clock. Very cheap too. We have planned to drive this around all of europe for the next three months. It is considerably smaller than the Van we had in the USA, but this is necessary to navigate the ancient streets and parking spaces here.
The two intended on navigating to Rodellar in Northern Spain but actually navigated to another town called Rodellar, far from the rich land of limestone. This was due to incorrect research and the simple fact that I wasn't there. After 9 hours on the road they finally found the place which was the real Rodellar.
For those who aren't familiar, Rodellar is a small gorge filled with limestone features. Its no where near the amount we have seen elsewhere, but still enough to keep you amused for a month or two. We stayed at a great place called Kalandraka, a climber-orientated Refuge right at the edge of the gorge complete with a 'kitchen' (really just a food storage room with a sink), a restaurant (comes recommended from The Beric) and coin-operated showers.
Whilst we were there we met a nice American couple from Tuscon who were climbing at Rodellar and climbing hard! Meghan and Luis were very friendly and we ended up spending the majority of our time with them. They have been around the world climbing and have done everything from cragging to Big Wall first ascents so they had some experience!
Crimping Champion Meghan :)
One of the highlights at Rodellar is El Delphin, an arch and open cave structure that would make any Sport bunny go hopping mad. Fixed Draws!! Chalked holds!! Lower-offs!! Obnoxious children knocking rocks into the gorge! Massive cheering crowds of European climbing teams!! What more could a certain individual ask for?
King Luis (the VIII)
On the third day Steve rested, so Chris and I accompanied Meghan and Luis to El Dephin. Spectacular! We tried our luck on the arch a pedestrian (for locals) 7c+ (grade 29 in Australia). It was a great photo route in an amazing position with some good moves. We spent a good two days in this area and it comes highly recommended.
Beric Cranking the glorious Arch
Steve killing the Arch
Rodellar also includes numerous caves which we spent the majority of our time in. We also met a kick ass American guy called Jason who provided us beta and a few belays. Some good times were had! The rock was super solid and not overly polished so get on out there!"
Thanks Nomad.. Now, lets get some things straight. Firstly Rodellar certainly wasn't Rodellar. According to Google maps there is one Rodellar, and According to our GPS there is another one 100km north of the real one. Unfortunetly these are separated by 3 hours worth of switchback mountainess road. And foolishly we trusted our GPS.. Rookie error.
And another thing, Nomad claims that we got lost due to "the simple fact that he wasn't there to help". But let me tell you, Nomad not being there had nothing to do with us going to the wrong Rodellar. To put things nicely poor old Nomad contributes very little to the navigation planning and accommodation booking so his presence would have been of no use.
Speaking of which, Nomads presence was absent for the start of the Rodellar trip due to him still being on Mallorca island with the mysterious Norwegian girl. Unfortunetly he missed his plane flight as he was doing his duties at the Palma Hospital. Actually, we have lost Nomad again at this very moment. He went spookeye and dissapeared a few days ago with the mysterious Norway girl again. We think they went to Italy and we will possibly rendezvous with the Nomad in Greece in a few weeks. But you can never be sure.
We found one town that we were certain was Rodellar, Steve pulled over on the narrow mountain road for Beric to take a photo of it as we were so excited. Still wasn't Rodellar.
The Real Rodellar:
One highlight we must add about Rodellar is the discovery of the Italian Men. There were these Italian men that were far superior to any other we have encountered. I'm telling you, these men were machines:
This is the Alpha Italian man, MARIO:
This one is Nomad in 5 years:
He was highly skeptical of us:
This one was in his 70's and still had better abs than us and was climbing way harder. He sent this overhanging 7b project of Steves. And spent like 25 minutes hanging on the route resting out on crap holds. He had some sort of OLD MAN endurance. We had heard rumour's about OLD MAN endurance from Lee. It seriously exists. Something for us to look forward to!
We have decided that we shall now dedicated the rest of our lives to becoming more like these Italian men. As soon as we get away from all the glorious food that Beric's family is feeding us in Croatia we will become Italian men. It is hard right now as we are living like kings with consistent divine 3 course meals everyday. You see to be an Italian man, you need to have absolutely no body fat whatsoever. Beric befriendedall of the Italian men. Especially the Alpha Italian man, Mario. and after much time and trust Mario told Beric the secret to being an Italian man.
" ....errr.. Coffee... and.. Cigarettes.. thats all "
Turns out Beric has an awesome cousin in Bosnia called Mario also. And Mario is already an Italian man at the age of 16!!
For the record, on paper Beric is actually an Italian man. He comes complete with Dual Italian and Australian Citezenship thanks to his Nonno. Any extremly attractive girls that can rock climb hard and are looking for a husband please keep in mind that a European passport is veeeerry handy. Wink wink. Nudge nudge. Cuts out all that visa crap if you want live or work in Europe.
Which one is Steve??!
Enough with all the words, lets let a Movie do the rest of the talking:
|Mallorca Island Deep Water Soling! Cache Translate Page|
After England we all met up again on Mallorca Island Spain. This place is the deep water soloing (DWS) capital of the world. It's where DWS was first invented! In the photo above is the famous Es Pontas Arch. It features the worlds hardest DWS climb which was put up by Chris Sharma and goes at grade 9b.
Deep water soling is when you climb cliff faces that overhang water. You don't need a rope, you just climb it free and when you fall you land safely in the water... Sometimes.. Nakedness is an option and you have to dodge rocks in the water occasionally. It always fun when you are upside down in a cave 10m from the water surface and you have to land on your feet like a cat. Rough water smashing into the base of the cliff adds some fun into the mix also..
Speaking of nakedness.. this crazy naked lady was running a joyous cocktail at Cala Barques. You can see her in the background below.. Beric is joining in.
If you go to Mallorca ilsand Cala Barques is definetly worth visiting for DWS and swimming.
We lost Nomad again straight away that first hour in Mallorca. Turns out he had organised some strange rendezvous with a girl he met for one night in Peru, a Norwegian girl in fact named Marte. She came to spend the week with Nomad so they were staying together somewhere away from us.
Actually, right at this point in time nomad has completely vanished again. Went spookeye good a proper. We are in Holland but nomad disappeared on a plane to Norway for the week. Highly suspicious. This is the third Nomad rendezvous with the Norwegian girl and there is another one to come in Croatia we believe.
Nomads is all washed up, his goose is cooked and he's off the market. Our odds just went up by 33% so we don't mind. Still, it makes us sick!!!
Anyway, Steve and I were staying for the first few days with a German girl named Simone we met through Couch surfing. Simone lived right in the centre of Palma. Germany has claimed Mallorca Island we noticed. There is a huge German population there, many shops with German signs and a crazy beer drinking stripper bar. We didn't go in of course.
The old EURO park trick, gets ya everytime...
After two days we relocated to stay with a crazy cat lady lesbian in Arenal. Her name was Helana and she had 4 cats and like 10 dogs! Very impressive.
We made good friends with an Argentinian guy called Mad dog (a.k.a Mariano)..
We also lived in a cave for a litte while, ahhhh must get shelter and a fire!!!
Following this we also stayed at a house with 6 Belgian beauty queens. It was the coolest thing that has ever happened to us, and it'll neeveeer happen again!!!
We met the girls at the beach and they invited us to their Island dream holiday cottage for a BBQ. We like BBQ's. The cottage had a kickass webber and swimming pool.
The Belgian Beauty Queens did the salad and dessert while we handled the meat cooking. We think we did Australia proud with our exceptional BBQ cooking skills. The Belgian Beauty Queens had bought some exoctic food too, on the menu:
We were highly impressed with their shopping selections! The Belgian girls also had a yummy stock pile of cheese and wine..
We decided that day that we were going to Belgium, to visit it first and then live there for ever. We did visit for a few days in fact this week, more on this in a future blog!
Below is a short video of our deep water soling (DWS). Please think of this video while you are all at work like suckers.
Let that be a lesson.. girls will ruin your climbing adventures every time!! There would have been far more exciting footage of DWS but the planned filming day was brought to a stop early on when the mysterious Norwegian girl required a helicopter rescue (???). She had a concussion from face planting it in the water when her and Nomad jumped off some rocks together. This resulted in us swimming her to safety for a few hundred meters on a blow up sofa, not an easy job in the surf. They did some tests at the hospital and thankfully she was all ok.
Current score, Belgium 2, Norway 0. The whole day ended up being blown out of proportion we think. If it was one of us we think the medical advice to one another would have been:
"Here's your pack, go on, get out of here, march up that track to the car, I'll meet you there when I am finished climbing". Our meat head Brothers (god bless their cotton little socks) and their cronie friends get concused in football games all the time, its standard behaviour in Australia.
Here is a link to the DWS we did in Vietnam in 2009. We love DWS and will be doing much more of it this year in Croatia and Thailand. Please note credit goes to Lee Cujes for putting the Vietnam video together. The media for the video was a group effort between us (the Three Awesome Monkeys), Lee and Sam Cujes and the J-man (Jason Piper).
|Finallly! Three Young Monkey's in Canada Cache Translate Page|
So I haven´t released a blog for a while, what with the all climbing, women, fast cars, poker games and travelling.. but Nomad and I are driving 800km from Spain to France in one hit and I have had a little spare time to write the Canada blog.
We noted that Canada is pretty much inhabitable and we don´t know why there are all these poeople here. Its beautiful but still cold in Summer. We hear that come winter it gets down to like minus 50 degrees.
My co writer Steve is in Australia for his sisters wedding. Best wishes to Marrisa and her husband Chris! After I finish this blog my next mission is to sell all the stuff Steve left here.
Now lets get one thing straight, road tolls in France lick the bag.. but thats another blog!! SO.. CANADA! We arrived in Calgary and picked up our brand new V6 Mazda 6. It was a joyous mobile and far more powerful than the soccer mum van we called home back in the US. We noted that Canada was far different to America pretty quickly. Less drive through "Family Restaurants" on the highways.. and too many Australians.. It seems they import Australians here to do all their dirty work at the ski fields and what not.. This had a significant impact on the effectiveness of the Australian accent on the ladies... not that we have time for this with all the climbing..
A few shots of Calgary:
We stayed with a joyous girl called Sarah for a couple of nights and then ventured to Canmore. Canmore is an amazing ski Town in the middle of the Rockies. The Rockies are a bunch of crazy rock peaks that extend from like Colorado up through Canada. The same ones we were climbing in back in March! The peaks surround Canmore and were still covered in snow.
First we stayed with our new couch host Hannah :) what can I say, one of the coolest chicks we have ever met!!! loco hair and personality ;) We climbed at the local bouldering gym as it was snowing/raining (yes in May). Did I mention I am highly un-impressed with tolls?!
So this bouldering gym was where they held the world bouldering competition the week before so we figured it must be good, but it licked the bag. It had nothing on the gym in Boulder, Colorado. Damn tolls. All our precious savings and stingyness down the drain.
I spent my last 3 dollars at this ice cream bus, took days to find an atm for more money:
Hannah's beautiful house featured a girls slumber party room on the third floor:
In amongst our few weather windows we climbed at Grassi lakes which is 20 mins from Canmore. Some decent limestone routes but certainly not worth going out of your way to visit.
Something about grid bolting, climbs every half meter:
On the plus side the Grassi lakes canyon is full of grizzly bears and theiving squirels. They are quite tactful and the bears will kill you.
Still in Yosemite mode, I thought bears where scared of humans and I was intent on spotting one to get some good photos. On one day an extremely terrified hiker told me there was a massive grizzly bear on the walking track a few 100 meters away. There was no time to waste. I marched off on a bear hunt.
Ha Ling peak is next to Grassi Lakes and features a huge sport multipitch, nearly as big as the one in Mexico. Don't let the pleasant photo fool you, its north facing, was still covered in snow and has unpredictable weather year round.
Now being the one and only Beric Grylls I have been stashing some knowledge on bears that I received from the locals. Firstly, don't suprise a Grizzly as it may kill you. This is where the bear bell comes in. I didn`t have a bell so I improvised by clipping lots of quickdraws (linked carabiners) onto my climbing harness which banged and jingled while I was walking. Next thing is you should carry bear spray, I didnt have any of this fangle dangle spray but there where lots of rocks on the ground.. Next you need to be able to distinguish what sort of bear your dealing with and damn quickly. The reason for this is that for different bears the recomended courses of action are different.
For a Grizzly bear don't look it in the eyes, back away and play dead if it comes for you. For a brown bear stand tall and look intimidating, easy for a toned rock climber with scraggy hobo hair. If the brown bears comes for you, FIGHT BACK! I like that. To reiteriate, dont fight the grizzlies, you WILL DIE a glorious death. Now all of this advice may be messed up and the wrong way around. You fight the grizzly bears right? I couldnt rememember, never mind, but I was going to go with the play dead stategy. I must admit once I walked a km or so into the quite forest I was starting to really get on edge. There was definetly a huge Grizzly around and I was starting to second guess this ridiculous camera operation, I saw what looked like a bear through the trees and my whole body tingled and froze. I got the shot and then got the hell out of there.
Our next host was Nicholas and Jody, they were lovely people and their hypo puppy rottwhealer got along well with Rahfiki. Almost too well. Ahhhhh FOX on the road NOMAD!
Our next Couch Surfing hosts were Nathan and Colleen. And they rocked the Casbar!!
We had a great time with them, they took us to watch a Hockey game at the local pub which was interesting because Canadians are very serious Hockey fanatics. In fact the Canada lost the cup against the USA which resulted in a massive riot in Vancouver. I'm not sure why, but the mobs of angry people seemd to think it was a good idea to smash and burn their own property and town. Genious! This actually happened in Vancouver back in the 90's too.
While we were in the USA at Indian creek we met the famous rock climber Jim Donini. THis crazy old man is like 70 and climbs way harder than us. He has done it all and is a real pioneer for the climbing community. These days Yosemite is a joke to him so h spends his days climbing first accents at Patagonia, Chile where the weather is highly unpredicatable. In the few hours we spent with Jim Donini he told us that if we go to Canada we have visit the "back of the lake at Lake Lousie". As far as he was concerned no other climbing locations existed in Canada. He was right! appart from Lake Louise being one of the most famous lake landscapes in the world the climbing is amazing. It is pink quartzite, nice and steep, and the lake falls away below you.
As with any famous lake, there were 10,000 noobs with cameras, this group of Asians sums it up:
This Marmot knew the score:
That day we were lucky enough to see two baby grizzly bears. No sign of the mother grizzly bear. You have to be super careful around grizzly cubs as the Mothers are extremly protective and if you get between them and the cubs its definetly game over.
We also saw a massive Elk..
These Elk can be very aggresive to so its best not to get too close.......
Another crazy thing is that the highways in Banff national park have nature bridges, where they build a bridge with trees and dirt so the animals are kept of the roads. Its a pretty big bottle neck and they look ike a good spot for animal predators to chill out and ambush their prey.
A few km's out of Banff is a huge haunted mansion Hotel thing. It used to close down for the winter and this is actually the Hotel that Steven King got his inspiration for the movie 'The Shining'.
They didn't film it here but he based the idea of the movie on this place. The staff in the building are terrified to talk about ghosts and the Spanish maids will only work in groups of 5 after a number of incidents and ghost encounters that have occured over the years. There are two rooms on like the 6th floor where a man killed his entire family many years ago. The doors to these rooms have been blocked off with bricks and painted to look like normal doors that fit into the hall way. Another famous story is about a lady who mysteriously fell down a set of stairs in the Hotel on her wedding night. Apparently she is frequently seen screaming and crying around the stairs in her wedding dress.
Anyways, I spent a number of hours playing Golden Eye and Zelda with Nathan on his Nintendo 64. In my opinion these hours and the hundreds of hours I have spent playing these games in the past were not wasted by an means, I would do it all again! My Mother would probably not agree. She witessed by childhood nintendo addiction for many years and helped me escape. A small relapse in Canada can't hurt right?!!
Now while I am getting all sentimental I have decided to throw in a rare and super special video of the Younger 3 lost monkeys. This is a video from way back in the year 2003 when we went camping one long weekend at Running River Gorge. Running river gorge is North a few hours from Townsville past Paluma. We were 16 and didn't have licenses so good old Georgey dropped us out there with a stash of food, abandoned us good and proper. One of the highlights was the death flying fox across the gorge which has a pile of jagged rocks for the first few meters, so you gotta hand on tight! If I recall correctly, a severe thunderstorm threw in some excitement too one night. Man we had it all back then, and we threw it all away! We washed it down the drain dammit. Now look at us. We arn't gunna get those days back Nomad and Steve. We're all washed up.
Yep we were crazy back then and we are still crazy now. This whole ridiculous movie making thing has been going on for many years let me tell you. We have media dating back some 12 or so years, most of which will need to remain hidden as it is highly incriminating. And back in those days it wasn't so simple, no fancy spancy USB drives and flash memory. You had be some crazy Steven and spend days messing with elaborate AV cord setups and specialized illegal software.
~~ BONUS PHOTO ~~ Nomad and some wierdo reading the paper in the Banff Mcdonalds, its Nomad in 10 years!
|Lachlan's of Walmart Cache Translate Page|
We promised more on Walmart in a previous blog, so here it is. For those of you who don't know, Walmart is a giant super franchise that sells everything you can think of. They are everywhere all over the USA and no one likes them, they destroy all the local businesses. They are also full of complete wierdos like us, they even have a website dedicated to providing photos of the very best of these wierdos:
We went to Walmart in nearly every US city we visited, we should be ashamed of ourselves, but it's so cheap! Now would be a good time to mention the store has a no photo and video policy inside the stores. Didn't stop us, we've been capturing stealth footage for years now.
Our friend Lachlan is one of the websites biggest fans, he has never actually been to a Walmart yet, or has he??
Credit on the editing of this movie goes to Nomad, this was his first attempt for the monkeys. We think it's crazy enough to make the cut and fits in with the normal insanity of this blog.
|Lurking Fear - Monkeys Conquer El Capitan Cache Translate Page|
So eventually the Excel spreadsheet told us it was time to leave Moab so we hit the road for the long drive to the California Coast. Our first stop was the second largest city in Utah, St George. We spent the afternoon sport climbing at Chuckawalla wall.
Highlights of the following days drive included a strange desert town with some sort of alien theme, and our in car thermometer hit 100 degrees for the first time!
We arrived in LA to a mess of traffic, it seems that 7 lanes aren’t enough to keep the cars moving around here.
Eventually we found our backpacker accommodation in a very dodgy suburb somewhere near Hollywood. Strangely for some reason there was a few Corvettes and a Rolls Royce out the front.
Once inside we went straight to the free ‘buffet’ dinner. This consisted of corn chips, French fries, potato and white rice sitting at the back of a seedy bar. Plus a birthday cake?
After the feast we met a girl from Australia who ended up in some sort of confrontation with the owner of the hostel. You see she had tried to get a drink and didn’t have her ID on her. She was clearly in 30's not to mention. For some reason this was blown way out of proportion and the owner threatened to shoot her before spitting in her face in some sort of insane rant. He kept repeating "Im the owner of this place!". Following this the police arrived and the girl was escorted out. Meanwhile Beric was being followed by a 60 year old hooker.
After all this action in our first 20 minutes upon arrival we decided to escape the mad house and go for a look at the famous Hollywood walk of fame and a few random bars along the strip. All hail Hermione!! <3
All hail King Bloomy, it seems they have some sort of tribute shop to him.
The next stop on the tourist list was Santa monica pier and Malibu beach. Beric came to an agreement with some sort of bird.
The next day we left the hostel of madness and drove to San Francisco to stay with our good friends Andrew and Susie. We met back in 2009 in Vietnam and it was awesome to catch up again!
Andrew and Susie are 'big wall' rock climbing experts and helped us prepare for the massive El Captain mission with heaps of beta and much needed extra gear!
We spent several days cleaning, organising, sewing and debating over what to take.
Hmm.. to take the poop tube or not? Apparently, poohing on a wall can be quite a challenge.
Nomad finally lost the plot after 4 months being around Beric and Steve. He was strong to last this long, don't worry Nomad, a lesser man would have crumbled months ago.
Nomads gone mad, his goose is cooked! And he keeps writing in this pad. "What are you writing in that pad Nomad!? He keeps writing in that pad, he's writing in that pad again!"
We also spent some time looking around the downtown area of San Fran. This place had a high density of wierdos, some of the best we've seen!
Steve found an arctic suit to wear on El Cap, never mind jumpers and beanies, this suit had it all.
In yosemite we encountered excessive amounts of snow and water. USA still seems to be in the middle of some freak winter weather conditions in May. Highly unusual, the worst climbing season in 20 years so we heard.
All the snow made it impossible to prepare for free climbing properly so we had to resort to a full aid climbing mission in order to conquer El Capitan. Aid climbing is a method of climbing in which you used gear to assist you in ascending the cliff. You carry mass amounts of wedges shaped chocks of metal, camming devices and hooks. You wedge these metal things into cracks above you and place the hooks on little bumps in the rock. You attach a ladder made from nylon slings to the gear and walk up it. If the gear doesn't rip on you or the hook doesnt fly of and smash you in the face, you place another one. This process repeates.. like 3000 times. Sounds easy right? It is good when the rock is freezing cold and wet as you dont have to rely on your finger tips to pull your way up. As this takes a while you need to haul your food water and gear behind you in big vinyl bags that weigh more than you. Good exercise!
For those of you who don't know, El Cap is a world famous 3000 ft sheer granite cliff. It is the king of "BIG WALLS". It is the ultimate goal for many climbers and no easy task to climb. Around 60% of climbers fail...
"A big wall is a steep, multi-pitch ascent that takes most people much more than a a day to climb. Big walls are all about vertical exposure - climbing and sleeping with thousands of feet of air below you and thousands of feet of rock above you. There is nothing else like it. Big wall climbing is not about summit glory or pulling a single hard move or savouring the rush of adrenaline, although these things will happen. The experience is much more complex and rich. You don't flirt with gravity like you might base jumping or doing a hard single pitch climb. You live with gravity and exposure for 24 hours a day. People who climb big walls realise that the fact climbing the is so hard is the reason they do it. They make you dig deep both physically and mentally." Chris McNamara - Big wall guru.
El cap is far far bigger than we are. It looms over you and has a tendency to scare the crap out of people. People come from all over the world to climb it, but when the get below it and get 1 pitch of the ground it is quite common to bail, coming up with all sorts of excuses as to why the time isnt right.
You seriously have to bend your neck as far as you can to look up at it when you stand below it. The first time you see it you have to keep looking to check if it is real, "whoa, its, big, really big, I didn't it would be that big, what have we got ourselves into? nah dont worry about it, doesnt look much bigger than Moonlight Butress in Zion.. only some 2000 feet longer right.."
It is mysterious, massive and unforgiving. The stakes are high. The wheather is notoriously erratic and can turn bad at any moment. And theres no where to hide! Lets just say its a lot of pain and hard work, certainly not "type A" fun, its what we call "type B fun" i,e at the time there is nothing fun about it, its only when the memory of you throbing swollon hands, mangled stubbed toes and cramping biceps finally fade, you look back on what you achieved and then you truly enjoy the experience!
For the record Beric's hands were not functional in anyway whatsoever when he first woke up on day 3.. they were smashed into the rock on day way catching nomad when he took a big whipper fall. Combined with the morning cold and mass hauling the evening before he could barely undo his underwear to go to the toilette.. Nomad and Steve wouldn't help me with this either for some reason. We need bigger paper bags for next time I might add. Thats the price you pay for saving it up for a few days also. To Andy Beric and your Cronie friends.. All hail bog island, platypus rock and the El Cap log ledge!!
Along the way a few things paid the price actually...
We would like to thank our sponsers, Andrew and Susie for letting us borrow their big wall gear.
For the record you need a ridiculous amount of gear to climb a wall for three days. And everything needs a lanyard, Beric spent days putting lanyards on everything he owns, even his toothbrush!
Tom Evans on the bridge is the gatekeeper of El Cap, keeping a careful watch on all the climbers on the wall. He gave us critical beta on the weather, without his encouragement we may have missed our only window! Thanks for taking the awesome photos of us Tom!
You can check out Tom's site at:
Meg and Tamara hosted us in the lead up to the big wall. We stayed in their amazing house in El Portal. Thanks Girls!
Friends Erin and Melissa from Colorado came to the valley and were waiting with food and a super sized tent when we finally got down from El Cap!
For out last week we stayed with Casey in her sweet place in the middle of yosemite valley. Casey you're amazing and we can't wait to see you again mate!
Casey works as a teacher at the Yosemite school. This school is smack bang in the middle of heaven. One evening Casey took us to a bbq at the school featuring some sort of band band camp playing Lady Gaga. I bet they have good band camp stories inspired by Gaga lyrics ...this one time at band camp..
Andrew and Susie visited us again in Yosemite. We met them after they climbed Royal Arches and for some reason Andrew then proceeded to take several watermelons out of his pack.
After that it started to rain but never mind that, Andrew and Steve still managed to climb up a crazy waterfall slab.
There seems to be some sort of reoccurring theme where Beric gets naked in iconic places for a stunning photo shots.. This is a big tree, no the thing with leaves on it! Next stop, Eiffel tower and the Colosseum.
It seems that the bears are running the show around here:
Get outta here bear!
No seriously, they break into the cars at night time looking for food, rip the roofs and doors off good and proper..
This cider beer thing was warm and tasted exactly like an apple pie..
Dancing in a donger kitchen with girls was on the list. Check.

After our ridiculous fireworks mission the 3 Monkeys venture onwards to glorious Zion in Utah. We arrived very late at night at our new couch surfing place. Our new host was the radical and awesome Keith. It was very dark when we arrived so when we walked out the front door in the morning we were blown away when we saw the view. Keith's house is planted right in the middle of some sort of desert heaven:
Keith's house was near the town of Springdale. It turns out Keith is the man of this town. Keith brews all the beer in this town which is a big deal in the Mormon state of Utah. Below we are venturing into Keith's castle:
We were treated with unlimited beer straight from the storage vats. Note the magical cup below complete with curvature conducive to sipping beer.
Destiny was occurring, there was beer and Donkey Kong barrels:
Now I know you have all been waiting so here it is. A photo of the infamous Keith:
Above the beer castle is a museum full of crazy animals. Now thats a moose!!!
Next we visited Zion national park with Keith and our friends Erica and Indira from Las Vegas. Now nearly spring the trees and wild flowers were amazing.
We hiked up the trail Angels landing, the steep walk was definitely worth the view.
We celebrated the hike with dinner and a highly nutritional chocolate brownie..
Moonlight buttress was the perfect climb to practice Aid climbing on. The perfect splitter cracks just keep going. In the photo below moonlight butress is the one of the left:
This is the famous Chris Sharma ledge from the movie King Lines:
Before leaving Zion we took Keith on a rock climbing mission. He kicked aaaaaaaaaaasss!
This is Keith getting ready for Earth day:
Next step on our Journey was to pick up Nomads dad at some prearranged desert airport in the middle of nowhere. This was all James Bond style and highly suspicious.
We drove on into Moab, Utah, which is some sort of paradise for wackos, with the 4 Wheel driving and the hiking and the mountain bike riding and the rafting and the climbing.
Nomads Dad treated us to a number of resturant dinners and even a hotel room while he was with us. We had showers and real food which was an extreme luxury. Thanks for looking after us John. We enjoyed your company and the car felt empty after you were gone.
On a random note, Polygamy is a common practice in Utah and they have a beer to tribute it.
Nomads Dad brought this insane camera lense to get the shot. In the background is Castlton tower. "Pretty Speccy!!" This accent of this dessert tower was to be our next El Cap preperation. This tower seems to be some sort of joyous famous place where they like to flim Chevy car adds, Metallica music videos and Red Bull base jumping. This tower features a number of large old school style chimneys which is a climbing style we are not used to at all and would need to master in order to conquer El Cap. A Chimney is literally like a chimney in a fire place. You grunge your way up by squeezing your body and pressing your feet outwards. Can be very awkward and messy.
Below our some beautiful purple desert flowers. I ( Chris Beric ) found these flowers in the middle of nowhere at the base of Castlon Tower. Sadly my Nanna just passed away from cancer. Her favourite color was purple and these flowers reminded me of her. Like these special flowers, my Nanna brought colour to the world and her memory will carry on forever in my heart.
Below is of one of the amazing Moab Arches.
The final step in our El Cap prep was to learn how to crack climb. This where there are no face holds on the cliff face and there is just a crack to negotiate with. You put your hands and feet in the crack and twist them to lock them in place and "create a hold". This can hurt a lot and hand tape is useful. We went to Indian creek for this. This place is word renowned for amazing, tough crack climbing.
