frau computer cafe laptop arbeiten lernen

It started with a phone call to William Singer, founder of a college counseling firm. From there, it became a full-blown bribe involving a tax-deductible donation to an affiliated organization in exchange for someone to take the ACT exam in place of Buckingham’s son, who apparently was not told of the scheme, U.S. prosecutors said.

Some Men Just Want to Watch Mexico Burn, by Bryan Caplan      Cache   Translate Page

In the introduction to La Vida, famed anthropologist Oscar Lewis unfavorably compares Puerto Rico to Mexico:

But perhaps the crucial difference in the history of the two countries was the development of a great revolutionary tradition in Mexico and its absence in Puerto Rico.  Puerto Ricans sought greater autonomy from Spain during the nineteenth century, but they were never able to organize a revolutionary struggle for their freedom, and the single attempt along this line, at Lares, was short-lived and never received mass support.  By contrast the Mexicans fought for their independence from Spain between 1810 and 1821, drove out the French in 1866 and later produced the great revolution of 1910-20 with its glorious ideals of social justice.  In the course of these struggles great heroes emerged, men who have become symbols of the Mexican spirit of revolution and independence.

La Vida was published in 1965, just 45 years after the end of the Mexican Revolution.  Lewis personally knew many Mexicans who lived through it.  But what actually happened during this “great revolution” with its “glorious ideals of social justice”?  The best paper I could find on the topic is Robert McCaa’s 2003 “Missing Millions: The Demographic Costs of the Mexican Revolution” (Mexican Studies 19, pp.367-400).  After a detailed review of earlier estimates, McCaa deploys new techniques to reach a grim conclusion:

The human cost of the Revolution was paid mainly in blood. Of a total demographic cost of 2.1 million, excess deaths accounted for two-thirds,  lost births one-fourth, and emigration considerably less than one-tenth of the total… The best two-sex inverse projection to 1930, taking into account the age and sex distribution of the population in that year,  points to some 3 million missing as of 1921. Census error in the 1921 enumeration reduces this figure by 1 million. Two-thirds of the remainder was due to one factor: excess mortality (1.4 million deaths), with 350,000 more male deaths than female. Lost births were substantially less at 550 thousand. Smaller still, at less than 10 percent of the total loss, was emigration to the United States, with the persisting number of male “refugees,” generously defined, slightly more than 100,000, and females about three-fourths of this figure.

The basic history of the Mexican Revolution, moreover, was hardly “heroic”:

[O]nly six months passed between Francisco I. Madero’s pronouncement of revolution (November 20, 1910) and the overthrow of the old dictator Porfirio Díaz. The resignation of Díaz came in late spring 1911 and was accomplished with little violence or destruction. The fighting scarcely began until 1911… Victory at Ciudad Juárez came to the revolutionaries on May 10, 1911, after a siege lasting only a couple of days… Although the fall of Díaz was achieved due to uprisings throughout the republic, the cost of the Revolution, to this point, was probably only a few thousand deaths.

The real fighting began as the revolutionaries trained their weapons on one another over the course of the following six years… Zapata, having waited four months to rebel against the hated Díaz, did not allow four weeks to pass before rebelling against the enormously popular Madero. In late November 1911, Zapata, “tired of waiting” for Madero to carry through an agrarian revolution, according to the conventional view, denounced Mexico’s first democratically elected president by proclaiming the Plan of Ayala. Yet, until 1912, Zapatistas did not pose a serious threat to the Madero government. Elsewhere regional bands (and bandits), some with plans, others without, escalated the plundering of the countryside, hamlets, and towns. As is well known, within two years of Díaz’s resignation the nation slid into chaos…

With the assassination of Madero on February 21, 1913 –- probably on the order of the Madero-appointed commander in chief of the federal army, Victoriano Huerta—civil war erupted. The usurper proved incapable of suppressing the many revolts… [A]fter the failure of the Convention of Aguascalientes to resolve the differences of regional warlords, an even bloodier phase of the Revolution began, as, once again, the victors turned on one another. The year 1915 was the year of hunger. Marauding bands destroyed the few crops that were sown, many before they could be harvested. Destruction continued into 1916, although with the defeat of the northern chieftain Pancho Villa at the Battle of Celaya in April 1915, the violence began to wane, however slowly. Devastation was made worse by the Spanish influenza epidemic of 1918/19, to be examined in detail below.

McCaa thoughtfully concludes:

Given the magnitude of the human losses caused by the Mexican Revolution, the silence of some scholars and disbelief by others is surprising…

For the Americas, both North and South, the Mexican Revolution was the greatest demographic catastrophe of the twentieth century. From a millennial perspective, the human cost of the Mexican Revolution was exceeded only by the devastation of Christian conquest, colonization, and accompanying epidemics, nearly four centuries earlier.

How then could as knowledgeable a scholar as Lewis credulously praise the sordid bloodbath that was the Mexican Revolution?  As a Marxist, he was obviously predisposed to positivity.  His gushing, however, would probably resonate with many non-Marxists, too.

So what would possess anyone to so gush?  One could say, “You can’t make huevos rancheros without breaking eggs.  The war was tragic, but the results were great.”  Since we’re talking about Mexico, though, this seems absurd.  Sure, it’s a middle-income country, but given its proximity to the U.S., gravity alone should have turned it into a peaceful, First World country by now.  Violence, moreover, remains a grave problem to this day.  The legacy of the Mexican Revolution is one of the better explanations for why a peaceful, prosperous Mexico has yet to emerge.

In any case, people who admire revolutions rarely bother with counterfactual history.  What excites them is revolution itself.  Revolution is romantic.  The vision of tearing down the wickedness of the world, serving wrong-doers their just deserts, charging barricades with our brave leaders, and building a better world on top of the ashes is a thrilling story.  Counting corpses and asking, “What was it all for?,” in contrast, is a real downer.

If you share this romantic vision, you might even welcome my analysis: “Yes, I’m inspired by revolutionary idealism.  At least they tried.”  Yet calmly considered, this romantic vision is inexcusable.  Launching a bloody war without even asking, “How likely is this war to improve the world?” is as “romantic” as drunk driving on a playground.  Giving revolutionaries credit for “trying” is ridiculous.  If you combine brutality with wishful thinking about the consequences, your real goal isn’t to make those consequences a reality.  Your real goal is just to exercise brutality.

So why did Lewis gush over the Mexican Revolution?  Batman’s butler got it right: “Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren’t looking for anything logical, like money. They can’t be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.”  I’ve learned a lot from Lewis, but the less real-world influence people like him have, the better.

Vehicle purchases and student loans — whether for themselves or their children — are two of the biggest contributors to increasing debt for older Americans. People 60 and up had total debt of $615 billion in 2017, according to TransUnion, which is less than millennials owe on student loans alone.

Americans 60 and older held 21 percent of total automotive balances in 2017, vs. 12 percent in 2010, TransUnion said. Auto loans now account for $246 billion, or 40 percent, of their total debt.

For all Americans, fast-rising student loan debt is sapping income they could have used for other purposes, including a vehicle. More than a quarter of millennials with student loan debt have delayed buying a car because of it, according to a survey by Bankrate.com released in February, with the Midwest as the region most likely to cite loans holding back a vehicle purchase.

Mark Hamrick, Bankrate’s senior economic analyst, told Automotive News that many Americans are struggling with their finances even in a strong economy.

“It’s not unusual for many small towns in this country to have essentially not participated in the economic expansion in the past 10 years,” Hamrick said. “It doesn’t surprise me that the Midwest would be having some warning lights going off there.”

Student loan debt, which totaled $1.46 trillion in the fourth quarter for all ages, also is preventing younger Americans from purchasing homes, getting married and saving for retirement and emergencies, the Bankrate study found.

Jos. A. Bank unveils newly redesigned Madison Avenue flagship      Cache   Translate Page
#source%3Dgooglier%2Ecom#https%3A%2F%2Fgooglier%2Ecom%2Fpage%2F%2F10000

Jos. A. Bank has opened the doors to the company’s newly renovated flagship location. The new two story 13,800-square-foot store is located at the corner of Madison Avenue and 46th Street, just mere blocks away from Grand Central. The Madison location, originally opened in 1994, has undergone a full transformation to symbolize its focus on continuing the company’s mission of providing the best in quality, fit, and comfort for menswear.

The brand is geared to sell work wear for men, but their focus isn’t just suits, but business casual as well. The first floor of the store services the business casual looks with their sport wear department, and then dress shirts, ties, and accessories department all lead into the register. The first floor is also designed for items described as “pick-up-and-go”. The store features the three key brands under the Jos. A. Bank umbrella including the traveler, 1985, and reserve collection. The traveler collection currently makes up 50 percent of the company’s business.

#source%3Dgooglier%2Ecom#https%3A%2F%2Fgooglier%2Ecom%2Fpage%2F%2F10000

It is considered the most comfortable collection, as the idea around it was that it was the type of suit that guys would be most comfortable travelling in, and has the most performance attributes. The company worked with a third party vendor, 37.5, a temperature regulating fiber that keeps wearers both warm and cool.

The flagship store’s new claim to fame is their made-to-measure offerings. The company has had it for two full years, and is now making a bigger push to claim that slice of the market share. When Tailored Brands acquired Jos. A. Bank the former had just launched made-to-measure, and they would later acquire Joseph Abboud, which led to Jos. A. Bank launching made-to-measure.

#source%3Dgooglier%2Ecom#https%3A%2F%2Fgooglier%2Ecom%2Fpage%2F%2F10000

Abboud currently serves as the chief creative director for Tailored Brands, which includes his own eponymous label, Jos. A. Bank and Moores Clothing for Men.

Jos. A. Bank debuts newly remodeled Madison Avenue flagship location

The company’s goal with this store was to marry the heritage of the brand with the aesthetic of the store. To that end, the store boasts 17 foot ceilings, custom furniture and fixtures in rich brown woods, marbled stone tops, brushed copper hardware and antiqued mirrors. Design elements of shields and a map of the city of Baltimore depicted on wall coverings and rugs as an ode to the brand’s first location in Baltimore, Maryland.

While some might question why a brand would make such an investment in a flagship store in an era where brick-and-mortar is seen as a dying art form, Jos. A. Bank sees it as imperative to their omnichannel approach.

“Most men don’t love to shop,” said Mary Beth Blake, brand president of Jos. A. Bank, to FashionUnited. “But they want to feel good and we need to provide that service to them. So we’re working to advance our omnichannel side of things. That includes allowing them to reserve online, try on in-store and reserve online and pick-up in store. We also have a new feature on our site called live, where you aren’t chatting with a bot, you’re chatting with one of real stylists in the store.”

The new live feature allows customer shopping online to be connected with a stylist available at the store nearest to them. If a customer is in New York, they would be immediately connected with a stylist at either the Madison Avenue flagship or the downtown store in FiDi. If a stylist at those stores is unavailable it then geo-targets to connect you with a stylist at the next nearest store in a nearby city or state.

Customers can then decide whether they want sales people to text or video chat, and then decide if they want to buy or create an appointment with that stylist to get help wardrobing or even look into buying custom.

“The new store design with the emphasis on custom, fit and a personalized shopping experience met our intentions,” Blake said to FashionUnited. “We definitely believe in consumer’s choice and we never want to feel them forced to buy anything.”

Custom has become particularly key among their millennial consumers, particularly for weddings. Grooms want to be able to customize their suits to be different from the groomsmen. The store has two dedicated customer shops where customers can get one-on-one service to create a suit, sport coat or dress shirt. The mezzanine level has a lounge area for custom and formalwear fittings that have been designed to comfortably sit larger groups with oversized custom made leather ottomans and larger fitting rooms. Two full feature video walls add enhanced digital visuals throughout the store for an elevated brand experience.

“We have a lot of Italian fabrics,” Blake said to FashionUnited. “Zegna fabrics have been very popular for us among the custom offerings. We definitely see customers responding to our higher end offerings. Our customers have the expendable income to get top custom, and we still offer opening measure price point too for our more entry level customers, and sizes go from extreme slim to big-and-tall.” For their reserve collection, turnaround time for made-to-measure can be up to two weeks, while 1905 can be up to 4 weeks, which is an impressive turnaround time given many made-to-measure offerings can take up to six weeks.

Their shoe department features their third party brands including Allen Edmonds, Cole Haan, and Joseph Abboud and is the only area in the store where they don’t have their own private label. They also keep an in-house tailor in store so customers can get everything tailored to their specifications in-house if they need.

The second floor was merchandised to add more bust forms and mannequins so it would feel less like a warehouse space and more of a shopping experience. This is the second store to have the company’s new design model after their test store in Germantown, Tennessee and they plan to roll out to their fleet of nearly 500 stores. To date, the company is about 70 percent of the way there with getting all of their stores integrated with their new brick-and-mortar design model.

Timed with the opening of the flagship store, Jos. A. Bank will also launch their new “Get Ready for Greatness” brand campaign. Brand advertisements are a relatively new space for Jos. A. Bank in the 114-year history of the company. The first branding ad “Modern Man” was created in 2017, shortly followed by the first brand campaign and creative platform “The Bank Way”. Prior to these campaigns, advertising efforts were solely promotional and sales driven. “The Bank Way” reminded consumers that, for over 100 years, Jos. A. Bank has consistently exceeded the expectations of professional men with clothing of the highest quality and craftsmanship. Now, the “Get Ready for Greatness” campaign continues the momentum of “The Bank Way,” by conveying a message to customers that the brand has always delivered quality clothing for demanding professionals to look and feel their best all day, every day.

The brand’s customer base ranges from Millennials to Baby Boomers, and they have even begun addressing Generation Z at the lower end and more entry level offerings. “Custom has been a gateway for us to the younger consumers,” Blake said. “Custom customers shop more and come in to buy more frequently because they are more into fashion.”

The Midtown boys have found their next destination to suit up.

The best credit card rewards, bonuses, and perks of 2019      Cache   Translate Page

Personal Finance Insider writes about products, strategies, and tips to help you make smart decisions with your money. Business Insider may receive a commission from The Points Guy Affiliate Network, but our reporting and recommendations are always independent and objective.

Best Credit Cards

  • Credit cards with good rewards programs and great new member offers make it easier than ever to rack up a lot of points.
  • The best credit card in 2019 remains the Chase Sapphire Reserve, the reigning champ since its release in 2019, because it has a great sign-up bonus and a travel rewards system that makes it easy to collect points.
  • A close second is the American Express® Gold Card, which has a lower annual fee, lucrative dining rewards, and various statement credits to offset its annual fee.
  • Also worth considering: the Delta Platinum SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express, which is offering its highest-ever public bonus until April 3: 75,000 SkyMiles after you spend $3,000 in the first three months.

Since the 2016 launch of the Sapphire Reserve credit card by J.P. Morgan Chase, rewards credit cards have exploded into a mainstream obsession.

This was particularly evident among Millennials and Gen X-ers, as they jumped into the once-obscure world of credit card rewards and bonuses, drawn by the lure of high sign-up bonuses, special perks, and the opportunity to use points for free flights, hotel stays, and even first class tickets.

Now, more than two years after the debut of the Sapphire Reserve, what’s the best move for someone seeking to boost their stock of credit card points and frequent flyer miles? Here are some of the top credit cards currently available, based on sign-up bonuses, rewards earned on everyday spending, benefits, and overall value.

But first, a word of warning: Credit cards play a big role in maintaining a healthy credit profile and score. Make sure you’re aware of the impact that opening a new card can have, especially if you’re planning to apply for a mortgage or finance a major purchase anytime soon.

It’s also important to practice financial discipline when targeting credit card rewards — paying your balances off in full each month, making payments on time, and not spending more than you can afford to pay is the best course of action. After all, interest and late charges can cancel out the value you get from your rewards.

Here are the best credit card rewards and sign-up bonuses:

Sign-up Bonus: 50,000 points (after spending $4,000 in the first three months)

The huge introductory bonus might have made way for a smaller incentive, but the Chase Sapphire Reserve card is still a great card to keep in your wallet. Earning 3x Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent on dining and any travel, and 1x point per dollar on everything else, the Sapphire Reserve earns points quickly through your everyday spending, and it comes with a slew of perks.

While there are a few different ways to use Chase points, there are usually two options to get the best value: Points are worth 1.5¢ each towards travel booked through Chase, but can also be transferred to a number of frequent flyer and hotel loyalty programs — typically, this gets you the most value for your points.

Benefits include access to airport lounges through the Priority Pass network, trip delay coverage, purchase protection, a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit, and car rental primary coverage.

However, while the airport lounge access can be great, most Priority Pass lounges are in international terminals, which isn't helpful when you're flying domestically. If you find lounge access crucial, you should consider the Amex Platinum, which offers superior lounge access within the US.

The Sapphire Reserve's annual fee is a hefty $450, but that’s offset by a $300 travel credit each year, good for things like taxis, subway fare, parking, tolls, and flights.

There aren’t many downsides to this card — besides the up front annual fee. Chase has invested heavily in making the Ultimate Rewards program competitive. Booking flights by transferring points to frequent flyer partners is generally more lucrative — that’s usually how people use points to fly in first and business class — but it can be complicated because you have to decipher award charts, find availability, and work around complicated airline rules.

However, because the Sapphire Reserve allows you to get 1.5¢ for each point, if you use them to book travel through Chase’s online or phone travel agent, there’s a simpler and still-valuable option.

Pros: Solid sign-up bonus, easy to earn points, points work with frequent flier and hotel loyalty programs, good airport benefits

Cons: High annual fee, Priority Pass lounges are typically in international terminals

American Express Gold Card

Why you'll love it: The American Express Gold Card offers generous rewards on dining and groceries.

Welcome offer: 25,000 points (after spending $2,000 in the first three months). If you apply by January 9, 2019: Get up 20% back at US restaurants within the first three months, up to $100 total.

This fall, American Express refreshed its old Premier Rewards Gold Card, rebranding it simply as the American Express Gold Card. It also totally overhauled the rewards and benefits on the new Gold Card, making it one of the most exciting — and valuable — cards of 2018.

The new Gold Card earns a massive 4x points at US restaurants and on up to $25,000 per year at US supermarkets (and 1x point after that), 3x points on flights booked directly through the airline, 2x points on hotels booked and prepaid through AmEx Travel, and 1x point on everything else.

Based on the fact that you can easily redeem Membership Rewards points for more than 1¢ of value each when you transfer them to frequent flyer partners, that makes this one of the highest-earning available cards for everything food-related.

The Gold Card also offers up to $120 of dining credits per year, broken into chunks of $10 each month. Credits are good for purchases through food delivery services Seamless and GrubHub, and at The Cheesecake Factory, Ruth's Steak House, or participating Shake Shack locations.

Additionally, the card offers a $100 airline fee credit each calendar year, which is good for things like checked bags, on-board food and drinks, seat reservations, seat upgrades, lounge day passes, and more.

The two credits — together worth $220 — are almost enough to offset the card's $250 annual fee even before factoring in the value of the rewards you'll earn.

While it's difficult to assign an exact value to Membership Rewards points, since the value can vary significantly based on how you redeem them, travel website The Points Guy subjectively estimates each point as worth 1.9¢. That makes the welcome bonus worth $575 — $475 for the points, and up to $100 back from restaurants. Keep in mind some people may be targeted for a higher welcome offer.

The new card comes in a chic metal design, and until January 9th, you can request a limited-edition Rose Gold version.

Pros: Fantastic rewards on dining and groceries, statement credits and benefits to offset the annual fee.

Cons: You'll have to pay the $250 annual fee before you get the value back from the credits, smaller sign-up bonus, only 1¢ per point of value unless you transfer points to an airline.

Chase Sapphire Preferred

Why you'll love it: Chase Sapphire Preferred has a lower annual fee than the Sapphire Reserve and it's easy to rack up points.

Sign-up Bonus: 50,000 points (after spending $4,000 in the first three months)

The Reserve’s older sibling, the Sapphire Preferred offers a number of similar features and an identical sign-up bonus for a lower annual fee. The card earns 2x Ultimate Rewards points instead of the Reserve’s 3 x points on dining and travel, and 1x point on everything else.

Points are worth a lower 1.25¢ on travel booked through Chase, but can still be transferred to frequent flyer and hotel loyalty programs. There’s no annual travel credit, but there’s still car rental primary coverage, as well as slightly less-generous trip delay coverage and purchase protection. The annual fee is a more manageable $95, which is waived the first year.

While the Sapphire Preferred was the all-around best card for a long time, the Sapphire Reserve has made it a harder choice. Although the Preferred has a lower annual fee, it earns fewer points on bonus spending categories than the Reserve, and the value of the points on travel booked through Chase is less. The no-hassle travel credit on the Sapphire Reserve makes the annual fee on that card effectively $150 (accounting for the $300 you get back through the credit), so — depending on your spending habits — it can be worth paying more up front for the Sapphire Reserve

Pros: Good sign-up bonus, transferable points, travel perks, lower annual fee than the Sapphire Reserve card (and it's waived the first year)

Cons: Lower point value when purchasing travel through Chase, no annual travel credit, earns points more slowly than the Sapphire Reserve

We're a vegan millennial couple that spends around $415 a month on groceries —here's exactly what we buy      Cache   Translate Page

emily bloch

  • My boyfriend and I spend about $415 on groceries every month.
  • We are both vegan, and our grocery list usually includes fruit, vegetables, tofu, and vegan meat and cheese substitutes.
  • Here's a detailed list of exactly what we buy every month.

Mark and I are serious foodies, but we're trying to eat in more.

Tonight, he’s making Beyond Burgers topped with fried green tomatoes and cabbage sauteed in red wine vinegar. Last week, it was a faux fried chicken made from wheat gluten. I decided I loved him when he told me the sandwich we ordered came with mac and cheese on top of it, but wanted to know if we should get a side of it, too.

Together, we're a vegan millennial couple living in Jacksonville, Florida.

Even though we've been dating for a while, we just started officially living together under the same roof. We both went vegan for our love of animals — including our black lab Gypsy, who enjoys Mark's cooking scraps alongside normal kibble — and our distaste for factory farming.

We're both in the early stages of our careers with communications degrees, so we're not exactly rolling in a money pit. We also rent right now, but hope to buy a house within the next few years, so we try to shop frugally and eat in whenever possible.

Tip: Use the right credit card to earn extra rewards on your groceries:
The American Express Gold Card offers 4x points per dollar spent at US supermarkets on up to $25,000 per calendar year (and 1x point after that). Depending on what you spend on groceries, you can watch the rewards add up. Click here to learn more about the AmEx Gold.

On a monthly basis, the two of us spend about $415 on groceries. We do the bulk of our shopping at Publix, but aren't immune to the occasional Trader Joe's impulse buys, and we also shop at some local markets around town. If you've ever wondered what a vegan eats in a typical month, we're about to show you.

This is what our monthly grocery spending looks like.

Publix — every other week: $120 to $130

We shop at Publix, a regional grocer based in the Southeast, for most of our day-to-day foods.

Our basic produce and entree bases will come from there, along with most beverages, including our refrigerator staple: flavored seltzer water. I told you, we're millennials. (But if it helps, we usually get it buy-one-get-one.)

I'm a sucker for a daily yogurt and you will always find stacks of tofu in our fridge that we use in scrambles, tacos, and more. We also irregularly buy things like olive oil, margarine, juices, hot sauce, and whatever interesting snack foods catch our eyes — which are not included in this breakdown.

There are only two of us, so we're not buying in bulk, but we do look for deals when we can, and our average weekly savings comes out to around $20.

Trader Joe's — monthly: around $85

Mark never cared for Trader Joe's until I came along. But with one perfectly stationed on my drive home from work, I make sure to pop in and get us some seasonal goodies, sauces, and dressings to pair with whatever he's cooking.

They also have great deals on vegan meat substitutes compared to Publix. Items like Tofurky slices are usually a few dollars cheaper. Needless to say, he's coming around.

  • Chili-spiced dried mango - $2.00
  • Garlic spread dip - $6.00
  • Pasta - $3.00

  • Jam - $3.99
  • Seasonings - $6.00

Local markets - weekly: $45 to $50

We love supporting local businesses, and if that doesn't mean eating out, it often means getting items that we can incorporate into our own cooking.

Our favorite stops include local produce farms, a kombucha brewer, and a vegan meat butcher that somehow magically crafts faux meat and dairy substitutes like bacon, chicken salad, and even cheese sauces out of soy, wheat gluten, and other ingredients.

  • Local vegan meat substitutes - $10.00
  • Local vegan cheese substitute - $5.00
  • 32-oz. growler fill of kombucha - $11.00
  • Loaf of local sourdough - $6.00
  • Seasonal produce - $15.00

A woman who retired at 38 says most people probably can't do it      Cache   Translate Page

tanja hester

  • It's more difficult to retire early if you start from zero savings or have debt.
  • That wasn't the case for Tanja Hester, who retired at 38. She had a head start with retirement savings and home equity, she told The Cut.
  • But it still took Hester six years to save enough to retire, which she did in part by moving to a city with a lower cost of living.

Tanja Hester began planning her early retirement at 32, she recently told The Cut.

She was driven to retire early by a demanding work life that put stress on both her physical health and her marriage, she said.

"Isn't the idea that you're supposed to achieve more to get a better lifestyle, not a worse one? It was like my work advancement came at the expense of the rest of my life," Hester, a blogger at Our Next Life, told The Cut.

Before they officially left their jobs, Hester and her husband had put away about 37 times their annual spending, but they weren't starting from scratch.

"It took us about six years to save up for our retirement, and we were not starting from zero. I want to be very clear about that," she told The Cut. "We had retirement savings and home equity before we began the process. I don't think most people can retire at 38 like I did."

Looking back, Hester said, she worked hard on her own as the child of a single dad on disability to eventually be able to retire early, but she was helped by at least some "luck and privilege," including graduating from college with very little debt. Still, Hester and her husband have "always been big savers," she said.

How close are you to being able to retire? Find out with this calculator from our partners:

Hester wrote in her book, "Work Optional: Retire Early the Non-Penny-Pinching Way," that there are a number of ways to fast-track yourself to financial independence and create support structures to stay on that path, Business Insider's Hillary Hoffower reported.

"There are two sides to the saving equation that affect how quickly you can save: how much you earn and how much you spend," Hester wrote. She outlines four steps to quick savings progress: underspend on housing, underspend on transportation, increase your earnings, and use your raises to increase your savings.

"What really helped us do it was that we moved from LA to Tahoe, which has a much lower cost of living," Hester told The Cut. "We bought a home here in 2011, when the housing market was in our favor, and telecommuted for years."

Ultimately, deciding how much money you need to retire early really depends on two factors: your cost of living and how much you expect to earn through investments or passive income during retirement. Once you've calculated that amount — which Grant Sabatier, a self-made millionaire who retired at 30, calls your "target number" — you can figure out how much you need to save monthly, weekly, or even daily to get there.

City Theatre Presents World Premiere Of THE BURDENS      Cache   Translate Page

City Theatre is thrilled to announce the details of the fifth show of the season: the world premiere of The Burdens by Matt Schatz. The Burdens is a dark comedy for the digital age. It is directed by City Theatre's returning Artistic Director, Marc Masterson, and will run on the City Theatre Lester Hamburg Stage, April 6 - May 12, 2019. Tickets are on sale now.

This world premiere was developed in residency at the 2016 Eugene O'Neill National Playwriting Conference and has had readings at Seattle Rep, Midtown Direct Rep, Ensemble Studio Theatre, Florida Rep and City's own Momentum Festival.

"The Burdens having its first production at City Theatre, in particular, means so much to me," said playwright Matt Schatz. "City Theatre was the first place I ever really saw new plays and world premieres and they were always first-rate. As an MFA student, I interned in City's lit department in 2003 and assisted a playwright in the first-ever Momentum Festival of that year. To have a play be part of that festival last season and to be fully produced this season, really is a dream come true. In the past couple of years, Pittsburgh has embraced me and my work in ways that no other city has. I couldn't be more grateful, and I couldn't be more excited! I wasn't born or raised in Pittsburgh, but whenever I visit, it always feels like a homecoming."

Artistic Director Marc Masterson has also had a homecoming this year. The Burdens is the first show Marc is directing since returning as the Artistic Director of City Theatre after 18 years. "The Burdens is smart and funny and just dark enough that it doesn't kill the smart and funny," Marc commented. "I love the writing, the theatrical imagination, and what Matt has to say about family ties and the challenge of communicating in the modern world."

In an effort to better serve our community and to eliminate economic barriers to entry, City is continuing Pick-Your-Price-Previews: tickets start at just $5 (plus fees) to all performances April 6 through April 11. See details at CityTheatreCompany.org. This offer may not be combined with discounts.

Siblings Mordy and Jane communicate like proper millennials: primarily through text message and loaded with sarcasm. Their lives flailing on opposite coasts, they hatch an outrageous plan to relieve their mother of the burden of Zad-Zad, their centenarian - and particularly prickly - grandfather. A dark comedy for the digital age about pop culture, connection, and the value of actual face time.

The Burdens is directed by Marc Masterson. The cast includes Catherine LeFrere and Ben Rosenblatt. The production team includes Britton Mauk (scenic design), Andrew David Ostrowski (lighting design), Madison Hack (costume design), David Remedios (sound design), Clare Drobot (dramaturg), and Taylor Meszaros is Production Stage Manager.

CMU Alum Matt Schatz writers for the stage and screen, including projects developed for Fox Television Studios, USA, and TBS. Works include: An Untitled New Play by Justin Timberlake (CLO Spark Festival 2018) and Kleban Prize winner Love Trapezoid.

Have 'sexual interludes' obscured the path to love?      Cache   Translate Page

  • The majority of millennials are still unmarried by age 32.
  • Susan Winter, a relationship expert based in New York City, says the culture of modern dating has had an impact.
  • Among her tips for finding love? Act in accordance with what you said you want.

None

We live in a world filled with ghosts. Perhaps you, reader, are among them. Indeed, for many on the hunt for love nowadays, dating is more of spectral phenomenon — A "Now you see me… now you don't" kind of thing — than it is a welcoming home.

In America, in particular, — from the sun-scorched, white sand beaches of South Florida to the misty, evergreen woods of Juneau — there are many romantic vagabonds. However, this trend so prevalent among young people wasn't always so. Though the majority of millennials today are still unmarried by age 32, just 50 years ago, in the 1960s, the situation was flipped. About 65 percent of our generational forebears were long-hitched by the same age.

So, has marriage become less "compelling" for millennials, as Rabbi Schumley Boteach posits — or, is something stranger afoot? Something of which we haven't yet named, but nonetheless begun to come to grips with.

Well, matrimony may, indeed, be irrelevant for some, but it hasn't lost its allure to the distinct majority. Most people who are unmarried today — nearly 60 percent of them, actually— say they would like to, "someday," get hitched. It may be happening later in life for them, but millions of 20- and 30-somethings are continuing to walk down the aisle, and recite — amid roses, peonies and confidants — promises of fidelity to each other.

Still, for these who do venture into it, what's the cause of marriage's delay today?

None

The results of recent studies suggest that it could be because many millennials are in debt, especially from school loans. The shame and stigma of "being in the red" may be acting as a sort of weedkiller to budding love. For many young people — especially those who entered adulthood during the Great Recession — being on firm financial footing is a critical step toward starting a family. [See: Being broke is no joke]

However, is lack of money the sole reason? Humans have, en masse, been entering into marriage, and other forms of "serious#source%3Dgooglier%2Ecom#https%3A%2F%2Fgooglier%2Ecom%2Fpage%2F%2F10000" relationships, strapped of cash — without 401Ks or savings accounts or stock portfolios — for literally millennia. This said, could it be that millennials' delay in getting to love is due to more than a financial issue, as it's popularly singled out to be?

What the expert says

According to some sex and relationship experts the phenomenon does transcend money, and is an issue heavily influenced by modern dating. Indeed, Susan Winter, one of New York's top relationship coaches says that online dating — the culture found on several apps, at least — has wreaked havoc on the emotional health of many millennials. "I've noted an underlying state of depression in the number of the millennials that first come to me for counseling," Winter says. "... 'Getting to love' has been especially daunting for this generation."

A stream of romantic disappointments, Winter says, has left many millennials jaded, in such a state that, though they may find a serious partnership/marriage compelling, it simply seems out of reach to them. In a sense, many are in a romantic blue period. "The wear and tear of sexual interludes resulting in being discarded, ghosted, or breadcrumbed takes its toll," she says. "Even those that exhibit supreme confidence in their careers suffer low self-esteem due to their erratic and unpredictable dating lives."

When you combine "sexual interludes" with the modern rule to avoid "rules" — despite the fact we're evolutionarily social creatures — a stream of disappointments is liable to become a river. "Millennial's have little structure to support their dating process and protocol. Having eliminated labels and rules, many are left adrift in a confused state of hookups and 'situationships,'" says Winter. "Therefore, getting to partnership holds a high value for them. Once the difficult task of partnership is obtained, its loss seems even more dismantling."

Despite everything, it finds a way

How "dismantling" for millennials? Going through the whole dating process, again, after someone of note was found, can seem like a burden on par with scaling Everest. "This is a generation that's obsessed with 'getting back with their ex," says Winter. "The reason for this obsession is because establishing partnership is a difficult achievement that's hard won."

In many ways, hook-up culture has helped many young people become more sex positive — but it also has it's downsides. In this case, it's spurred confusion left and right, along with the increasingly popular riddle: What's happened to dating? Indeed, there seems to be a link between the culture prevalent in online dating, and the widespread lack of self-esteem, and commitment, among millennials.

As Dutch researcher Elisabeth Timmermans, who last year studied how psychopaths use dating apps, commented to PsyPost, "Our findings leave me wondering whether dating apps might be a threat to romantic relationships."

However, it's not all melancholic news. After all, millions of young adults are, when it's all said and over, still getting married. Despite bad experiences from "sexual interludes," and perhaps bouts of depression from today's dating scene in general, they're eventually "taking the plunge." Maybe a bit later than their forebears, but, maybe it's a testament that there's no one way — or season — to "get to love." Many times it seems to just be the result of dumb luck.

Nevertheless, since this is Big Think — and we believe "luck" favors the prepared — Winter does have some dating tips to help put the odds ever in your favor in this chaotic dating scene (they're listed below).

Don't stop believin', reader.

Winter's six tips to overcome modern dating woes:

  • Know what you want and need in a relationship.
  • Clearly articulate those wants and needs to your prospective partners.
  • Act in accordance with what you said you want.
  • Maintain clear and honest communication throughout the dating process.
  • Assess whether the relationship you're establishing meets the goals you want and need.
  • Affirmation.

California's Message: You Built That, Now Get Out!      Cache   Translate Page

The people who build our homes increasingly can no longer afford them. As the state elite and their academic cheering crew celebrate our progressive boom, even the most skilled, unionized construction workers, notes an upcoming study, cannot afford to live anywhere close to the state’s major job centers.

In fact, notes the study, soon to be published by Chapman University, not a single unionized construction worker can afford a median-priced house in any of the major coastal counties, including Orange, Los Angeles, San Mateo, San Francisco, Santa Clara, San Diego, Alameda, Sonoma and Napa. Even with incomes averaging over $73,000 annually, notes author and economist Dr. John Husing, most can afford median-priced homes only in the further reaches of the Central Valley or the Inland Empire, requiring huge commutes.

This gap between blue collar and professional and entrepreneurial wages is even greater among the majority of construction workers who are not unionized. Husing suggests that most of these workers could only afford the cheapest starter house in the furthest reaches of exurbia and beyond.

California’s growth model

For many progressives and futurists, California’s growth model represents a beacon to a prosperous future. It’s repeatedly pointed out that California is now the world’s fifth-largest economy, largely the product of massive wealth concentrated in the Silicon Valley giants, as well as a much stronger dollar versus the pound and Euro, and sub-par growth throughout Europe.

To be sure, California came out of the recession with a robust recovery, paced by increased property values, a soaring stock market and, critically, huge growth in the Bay Area, which represents roughly 17 percent of the state’s population. Yet overall, California’s post-recession growth, according to the BLS, is now only marginally above the national average, and in many regions, notably Southern California, somewhat below. The contrast is greatest with our strongest rivals: California is now growing jobs at a rate 50 percent or more below the rate of Texas, Arizona and Nevada.

Even in the Bay Area, growth is slowing, particularly in the San Francisco-Oakland area where job growth has plummeted from nearly 5 percent in 2015 to less than 2 percent last year. The bulk of the job growth there now is at the low and high ends, leaving little in the middle. Nearly half of millennials in the Bay Area, according to a recent survey, plan to leave; since 2012 millennial outmigration from Los Angeles, as a new Brookings study reveals, lags only metro New York in exporting its youthful workers.

Future threats to the working class

The California economic model is based largely on income and capital gains accruing to a relatively small part of the population, one reason the state ranks second in inequality to New York, and is becoming ever more unequal. To be sure, the new wealth has driven housing demand, largely for expensive new homes and apartments, but overall construction employment remains considerably below its 2007 levels. Growth in the sector has actually fallen from 2013, and now lags well behind the rate enjoyed in Nevada, Arizona, Florida and Texas.

Other key blue collar sectors such as manufacturing have also under-performed national average. The sector is now growing at one quarter the national rate, a shortfall exacerbated by state climate policies that have increased both energy costs and imposed ever more rigid regulatory burdens that encourage producers to move to other locales.

How sustainable is the “California Model”?

If the rest of the country wants to adopt the “California model,” it should be aware of what this means for the middle and working classes. The likely further acceleration of our state’s tougher climate regulation polices, as well as the prospect of more taxes on things like soda, guns and tires may please our green gentry and the oligarchs, but inevitably will hurt job prospects and raise the cost of living for most California workers.

Pushing our construction workers to the far fringes, particularly as state policy seeks to concentrate employment in expensive core cities, makes it less likely that new workers will enter the labor pool necessary to address our housing shortage. With residential sales dropping across the state, and California’s rate of new housing permits per new resident roughly half the national average, the prospects facing construction workers may be dimmer than necessary.

State measures to encourage the creation of subsidized housing could help some, but in reality would make only a tiny dent in the problem. Increasingly the political class focuses not on expanding the land for development, or bringing jobs to the more affordable interior, but on mandating subsidies, set-asides and rent control. Some, including certain oligarchs, suggest offering regular cash outlays so working people can subsist but never enter the property-owning classes.

Having sought accommodation with the green, anti-suburban regulators, both developers and labor need to recognize that it’s time to challenge a policy agenda harmful to the prospects both of business and most working Californians. Rather than doubling down on policies that reinforce our state’s descent into feudalism, we need to forge a new agenda that encourages instead broad economic growth and greater opportunity.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is better-known by Americans than the highest-ranking House Republican and some of Trump's most important cabinet members      Cache   Translate Page

New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

  • New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is better-known than most of the highest-ranking lawmakers and most powerful cabinet secretaries in Washington, according to a new INSIDER poll.
  • After just over two months in office, Ocasio-Cortez is more than 15 times as well-known as the longest-serving congressional Republican, Rep. Don Young.
  • Among top lawmakers in Washington polled by INSIDER, just three — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell — are more well-known than Ocasio-Cortez.

New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is better-known than some of the highest-ranking lawmakers and most powerful cabinet secretaries in Washington, according to a new INSIDER poll conducted on SurveyMonkey audience this past weekend.

Nearly 53% of Americans said they're familiar with the 29-year-old democratic socialist — more than twice the number who are familiar with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, the top-ranking House Republican.

After just over two months in office, Ocasio-Cortez is also more than twice as well-known as Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy, the longest-serving Democrat in Congress, and more than 15 times as well-known as the longest-serving Republican in Congress, Alaska Rep. Don Young.

Meanwhile, the Bronx native is better known than four of the most powerful cabinet secretaries.

About 47% of Americans are familiar with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, about 26% are aware of Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, about 10% are familiar with acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan, and just under 5% are familiar with Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar. Overall, those four individuals oversee some of the largest bureaucracies in the US government.

Read more: More than a third of millennials share Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's worry about having kids while the threat of climate change looms

Of the people included on the survey, just three top lawmakers in Washington — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer  — are better known than Ocasio-Cortez.

Pelosi is best known — around three-quarters of Americans are familiar with her, while about 58% know who McConnell is and 56% are familiar with Schumer.

13% of Americans said they did not recognize any of the names on INSIDER's list.

Ocasio-Cortez became an overnight celebrity when she stunned the political world last June by beating veteran Rep. Joe Crowley in the Democratic primary. The millennial political newcomer continued to build her fame with her active social media presence. Her Twitter following has ballooned from 60,000 on the day of her June 26 primary to 3.5 million by early March.

A mural depicting the face of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is displayed on a wall in the Lower East Side neighborhood of Manhattan in February 2019.

The freshman lawmaker's name recognition is likely also a result of the outsize attention she's received from the media. In particular, Ocasio-Cortez has quickly caught up to Pelosi as one of the main subjects of articles from conservative media outlets, including Fox News and the Daily Caller.

Other polling this year found similar results concerning Ocasio-Cortez's name recognition.

An early February CNN poll found that nearly 60% of Americans had an opinion about Ocasio-Cortez — 27% viewed her positively while 32% viewed her negatively.

And a January Morning Consult/Politico survey found that Ocasio-Cortez was better known than several likely 2020 presidential candidates, including Sens. Cory Booker, Kamala Harris, and Amy Klobuchar, and former Texas Rep. Beto O'Rourke. The poll found that conservatives formed opinions about Ocasio-Cortez more quickly than Democrats and independents did.

In order to get a sense of Ocasio-Cortez's relative popularity, INSIDER asked Americans whether they had heard of a handful of high-ranking politicians and cabinet members. The list included the House and Senate leaderships for both parties, the longest-serving member in each chamber, and four of President Donald Trump's cabinet members who oversee large parts of the federal bureaucracy.

For comparison, we also included Rep. Jim Jordan, an outspoken Republican who helps lead the ultra-conservative House Freedom Caucus and recently drew headlines during former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen's hearing. 15% of those surveyed said they were familiar with Jordan.

SurveyMonkey Audience polls from a national sample balanced by census data of age and gender. Respondents are incentivized to complete surveys through charitable contributions. Generally speaking, digital polling tends to skew toward people with access to the internet. SurveyMonkey Audience doesn't try to weight its sample based on race or income. Total 1,082 respondents collected March 10, 2019, a margin of error plus or minus 3.12 percentage points with a 95% confidence level.

At the recent annual banquet for cheerleaders at Tremper High School in Kenosha, Wisconsin, a coach handed out the Big Boobie award for the girl with the biggest breasts and, just for good measure, the self-explanatory Big Booty award. If the unnamed winners had any objections to the awards, they did not turn up in news stories. The left’s self-appointed morality monitors came running, but not to verify if the contest had been fair.

“Kenosha Unified School District is on notice,” tweeted the American Civil Liberties Union. “Our demand letter exposes their pervasive sex discrimination, including Tremper High School’s cheerleading banquet objectifying girls’ bodies. Awards distributed include ‘Big Boobie’ and ‘Big Booty.’”

The ACLU letter also charged that the school district violated Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which prohibits sex discrimination in education programs that receive federal funds. Under Title IX, the ACLU contended, sexual harassment includes “verbal or nonverbal conduct that creates a hostile environment that denies or limits a student’s ability to participate in or benefit from a school program or activity, such as a sports team.”

The ACLU also wanted the district to discipline the coaches who handed out the offending awards and mandate anti-harassment training for all district employees. Whatever the students thought of the awards, the incident provided a valuable lesson.

In the lore of the left, people who follow Judeo-Christian traditions are uptight types who believe that sex is shameful and have a problem with the human body. For the most part, the reverse is true.

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the American left’s socialist motherland, had no equivalent of Playboy, Playgirl, Penthouse and such, and Pravda did not put out a swimsuit edition in the style of Sports Illustrated. As George Orwell charted in 1984, socialist regimes are prudish to the core, directing all affection toward Big Brother and the Party. True to form, the Bolsheviks banned beauty pageants as a decadent bourgeois practice.

The USSR did not hold a national beauty contest until 1989, and then only as gesture to glasnost. For the record, Yulia Sukhanova, 17, “a stately blond schoolgirl from Moscow, won the first-ever Miss U.S.S.R. beauty contest Sunday in an American-style pageant that included a swimsuit competition.” So as the Beatles said, come and keep your comrade warm.

Tremper High School named two winners but the ACLU saw only discrimination and objectifying of women’s bodies. In reality, students should understand, the ACLU always had a problem with America.

Founder Roger Baldwin, wrote that the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics “has already created liberties far greater than exist elsewhere in the world.” Baldwin was “for Socialism, disarmament, and ultimately the abolishing of the state itself as an instrument of violence and compulsion.” Baldwin headed the ACLU until 1950 and in later years explained, “I wanted what the communists wanted and I traveled the United Front road to get it.”

On January 16, 1981, President Jimmy Carter awarded Roger Baldwin the Presidential Medal of Freedom, praising the ACLU founder as “an inspiration to those of us who have fought for human rights, a saint to those for whom he has gained them.” Any regime that opposed the United States could count on Baldwin’s support, and so could criminals. On the left, as Orwell wrote, rats are comrades.

The ACLU also favors deportations when the country of origin is a Stalinist dictatorship.

Elizabeth Broton Rodriguez fled Communist Cuba and perished with ten others in a 1999 escape attempt. Her son Elian Gonzalez, age five, was found floating in an inner tube and taken to relatives in Florida. The Clinton administration set out to deport Elian, and the ACLU agreed.

ACLU attorney Brenda Bernstein Shapiro blasted “the failure to return Elian to his father,” still in Cuba. The ACLU also urged the court to rejected the concerns of his Miami relatives about custody being determined by the best interests of the child. The ACLU also argued that federal courts must have jurisdiction to review Immigration and Naturalization Service decisions on asylum applications.

After the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013, the ACLU’s major concern was that police would question the suspect without reading his Miranda rights. This is the allegedly nonpartisan organization that puts high schools on notice over a Big Boobie award.

Just for fun, puzzled millennials might have a look at Monty Python’s “All England Summarizing Proust” competition. Contestants must give a brief summary of A La Recherche du Temps Perdu, once in a swimsuit, and once in evening dress. Since none succeeds in  “encapsulating the intricacies of Proust’s masterwork,” first prize, as the script says, goes to “a lady with enormous knockers,” who is thrilled with her award.

In similar style, the Wisconsin cheerleaders may have celebrated their Big Boobie and Big Booty awards, but today that brings on the wrath of the ACLU. On the left, they’re all prudes now, at time when breasts have been making news.

Across the pond, Victoria Bateman exposed hers on the BBC to protest Brexit. In response, Rachel Johnson, sister of MP Boris Johnson, swung free on Sky News to “make sure I get noticed” in a discussion of Brexit. No word how the exposure affected the ratings.

Rush Limbaugh attacks immigrants: "We have now imported the third world ... and they have not assimilated"       Cache   Translate Page

RUSH LIMBAUGH (HOST): In 1992, 90 percent of the electorate was white, the rest were African Americans. There weren't enough Hispanics to show up in the exit polls. Now, I'm telling you, this puts into focus how drastically they have changed -- the Democrats -- how drastically they have changed the country through immigration and how quickly they have done it. It also means -- the Democrat party of Clinton cannot exist with the Democrat base of today. The Democrat base today is so different from Clinton's years, back then it was white working class, it was blue-collar, it was practically 95 percent of the African American population. That Democrat base, when you hear people say this is not your dad's Democrat party, this is exactly what it means.

We have now imported the third world. The Democrat party has imported the third world into this country and they have not assimilated and this is why the Democrat party is now demanding third world policies. The Democrat party is not forcing all of these people they have enabled entry into this country via illegal immigration, they're not forcing assimilation. They're not encouraging assimilation, they're not even -- and they haven't been encouraging these people to assimilate, become Americans, they don't care. They just want bodies with a "D" next to their name on a voter registration roll. So they've imported the third world, and I don't mean this in a pejorative sense, I'm talking to you in a politically analytical sense, political analytical sense. That's who's coming to the country. Exceptions of course on the legal immigration side, but focusing on the illegal immigration.

We now have a totally different demographic, which everybody knows, but the problem is, they are third world. And so today's Democrat party has to come up with third world policies to appeal to these people as voters. And maybe even, you could say, they don't have to, they just are. Now does anybody find -- in this context, is it odd that you've got a bunch of young millennials running around touting socialism and all these wonderful things? That's the experience these new arrivals, as [Nancy] Pelosi calls them now -- the newcomers, that's their experience. You might say, "yeah, but that's the experience they're fleeing." Yeah, but they don't know socialism or communism, they just know poverty and so forth. And so the Democrats are offering the opposite of poverty. I mean, that's the point of their message. To me this is striking, and what adds insult to this is that the Republican Party has played a significant role in the invasion of, or the importation of, quote unquote, the third world into the United States via illegal immigration.

New Party Drug which is Perfectly Legal      Cache   Translate Page
Hundreds of people are packed into a bumping basement club in downtown Berlin, dancing for hours on end in a free-wheeling rave. The substance of choice hails from the exotic tropics. It’s said to impart a brain-boosting rush and tons of energy, enough to transform its users into raging Energizer bunnies. This drug can be ingested, drunk and even snorted. You’re probably familiar with its common name: cacao.

Aztec and Mayan civilizations used cacao for centuries in all kind of rituals and as an incredibly important medicine. Modern researches give you numerous reasons to consume this magic food. Cacao gives you more energy, it improves your libido, it boosts brain levels of serotonin, it keeps you looking and feeling younger, it helps you shed fat and because of its high level of magnesium it also protects against osteoporosis, assists in stabilizing blood glucose and lowers blood pressure. All of these benefits are increased by the vitamins and minerals contained in cacao.

In recent months, cacao has transcended its already lofty status as a superfood and vaulted into the realm of party drugs. In this latest incarnation, cacao powder is taking the place of alcohol and illicit substances like Molly and ecstasy in parts of Western Europe. Lucid, a monthly cacao-fueled dance party in Berlin, fixes bitter Balinese cacao into partygoers’ drinks. Morning Gloryville, a rise-and-shine rave company that organizes dance parties from London to New York, stocks its bar with cacao drinks and cacao pills. And in perhaps the strangest form, Belgian chocolatier Dominique Persoone invented a special $50 snorting device so you can huff your chocolate in powdered form, much like cocaine.

A great cacao party feels like a rave must have felt in 1988, back in the day when everyone would drop an ecstasy pill from the same batch always at the same time

Never mind that this is the same raw powder you can find at the corner Vitamin Shoppe or processed in your favorite candy bar — or that cacao is perfectly legal in all the jurisdictions we found. Proponents say that raw, virgin cacao is far more potent than you ever imagined. First comes a surge of endorphins into your bloodstream, which increases acuity and fuels you with feelings of euphoria. Then there’s the flood of magnesium, which relaxes your muscles and de-tenses your body. Raw cacao is also chock-full of flavanols that increase blood circulation and stimulate brain power, according to a recent study from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

The basics: cacao is extremely high in magnesium, the ‘relaxer mineral’; Sulphur, the ‘beauty mineral’; iron and chromium. Antioxidants: off-the-scale. It’s one of the most powerful superfoods around.

And, of course, cacao can be downright delicious. Lucid’s pixie-like party organizer, Ruby May, isn’t a purist when it comes to the stuff: She spikes the 18 pounds of cacao per party with sweet hints of honey, agave syrup and cinnamon, and the celebrations go on for six hours. “It’s like a smooth, sensual hug in a cup,” says the 36-year old. And as far as the sniffing chocolate goes, Persoone mixes the powder with ginger, raspberry and mint for his patrons in Belgium. Chili pepper was tried, he says, but was “not a good idea.” Color us surprised.

The Kuna Indians who live on the San Blas Islands off Panama drink an average of five cups of high-flavanol cocoa daily. The island population is also remarkable for extremely low rates of hypertension, unlike the Kuna on the mainland, who consume processed cocoa mix low in flavanols. Researchers, suspecting the island Kuna's staggering cocoa consumption might account for their superior health, began investigating the health effects of cocoa's raw compounds. This investigation led to the finding that (-)-epicatechin, one particularly abundant cocoa compound, supports circulation.

To be clear, cacao is not going to distort your reality. Under the beats of house, hip-hop, funk and electronic music, cacao “amplifies” the experience, rather than dims it with alcohol or drugs, says May. In fact, she doesn’t allow booze inside. The mood-boosting effects of cacao are “subtle,” she says, and it’s not like tripping on acid. Even pure cacao is not actually a drug. While it does contain certain mood-enhancing compounds such as anandamide and phenylethylamine, the bitter reality is that the amount is much too low to have any direct influence on mood, says Dr. Catherine Kwik-Uribe, the director of research and development for Mars Symbioscience, a scientific division of Mars, Incorporated. Which is to say that all of this alleged chocoholism is probably a placebo effect.

Ingested, it triggers a cascade of amino acids and neurotransmitters including monoamine oxidase enzyme inhibitors, which allow serotonin and other neurotransmitters to circulate in the brain; theobromine, which stimulates feelings of euphoria and contentment; and phenethylamine, the chemical we produce when we fall in love.

If it sounds like G-rated fun, well, it is; these are parties where virtue handily wins over vice.
All of these concoctions come courtesy of the “conscious dance movement,” which evolved from an underground movement into morning raves and lunchtime dance parties, often attended by millennial office workers. It seeks to create a positive — and healthy — environment, in which participants can unhinge themselves from negative thoughts and social inhibitions. Alcohol is usually a no-no, as are illegal drugs. Self-actualization, communal bonding and calorie-burning are key. If it sounds like G-rated fun, well, it is; these are parties where virtue handily wins over vice.

Note the sense of moderation. The best way to consume it is thoughtfully, setting aside time and space to be completely present because the more intention you put into it, the deeper your experience is going to be.

The use of cacao was pioneered in millennia past by Mesoamerican civilizations. As early as 1900 B.C., archaeologists believe, the Mokaya people in what is now Mexico were fermenting cacao beans into liquid chocolate. The Aztecs, it seems, valued cacao so highly they would trade the beans as a form of currency. Today, the very ethically conscious may have a beef with chocolate, protesting that appropriating cacao from its Mexican origins for Eurotrash-like dance parties rings a wee bit colonial.

Skepticism aside, cacao can act as a “catalyst for having more life,” says May, rather than “numbing ourselves with beer.” And “in all my years in research, I have never seen a person not smile when enjoying a piece of chocolate,” adds Kwik-Uribe. Admittedly, she has a vested interest — but on the other hand, we can’t imagine a party that can’t be improved by chocolate.

REBEL: Climate Change is a Social Justice Issue       Cache   Translate Page

Climate change is on the minds of everyone lately, as it should be, but with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez introducing the Green New Deal, the issue is especially resonant for black and brown millennials. What has prompted this seemingly newfound interest from this demographic in particular? Raya Salter is a clean energy law and policy expert, and she calls this current approach a "moral examination" of energy systems.

"What we're doing is, we're looking at the legal tools that we have," says Salter, "and where we end up is that we need to look at energy law and policy through the lens of environmental justice, human rights, indigenous rights and climate justice to get at some of those answers."

In this week’s REBEL, Salter breaks down energy justice work and what it holds for people of color in the run-up to the 2020 election.

Thank you so much for this good read. As an a MC's (literal) point of view during the reception, some guests don't treat it as a social event. I have seen guests who arrive just wearing shorts and slippers. I think another point to add is how guests behave when dinner time is now announced. Even if the MC did not specify, but when a buffet is served, it would be polite to let the ladies and seniors go ahead. Also, guests should be considerate when "topping" of food is done. Keep a lid on the amount, you can always go back for seconds. Need we say more about leaving immediately after dinner time? THAT alone. Goodness. Best regards

Cherry Lane Theatre's ACTUALLY WE'RE F** KED Extends Through April 21      Cache   Translate Page

Cherry Lane Theatre proudly announces that its current production of ACTUALLY, WE'RE F**KED, which opened on March 7 and initially set to run through April 7, will now extend its run through April 21, 2019. ACTUALLY, WE'RE F**KED is a new play by Matt Williams and directed by John Pasquin.

In ACTUALLY, WE'RE F**KED, four millennials order take-out every Thursday, drink too much wine and argue over how to rescue the planet. They know the world is a dumpster fire, and they're the generation to fix it. That is, until someone makes a life-changing announcement that challenges their beliefs, their relationships and whether babies should have their own Instagram accounts. The comedy stars Mairin Lee (THE HEIRESS on Broadway), Keren Lugo (WATER BY THE SPOONFUL), Ben Rappaport (ABC" For the People," FIDDLER and PICNIC on Broadway) and Gabriel Sloyer (THE ASSEMBLED PARTIES on Broadway).

ACTUALLY, WE'RE F**KED opened on March 7 and has been called "A zippy, likable romp across the minefield of issues facing millennials today. Williams peppers his meditations on the world's problems with idiosyncratic fluff, cutting rhetoric, and some genuinely hilarious one-liners. Go see this show if you want a road map for emotionally processing the very f**ked America we live in." TheaterScene; "With the first-rate direction by Pasquin, ACTUALLY WE'RE F**KED, (is) a well-acted, enjoyable evening of theatre. Definitely entertaining. I took my millennial son who loved it and could relate." Times Square Chronicle; "4 out of 5 stars. The play will make you laugh, may bring a tear to your eye and leave you feeling good as you leave." Front Row Center

The show will feature set design by Robin Vest (NYC: AND THEN THERE WERE NONE), lighting design by Paul Miller (Broadway: AMAZING GRACE, LEGALLY BLONDE), costume design by Theresa Squire (Broadway: HIGH FIDELITY), sound design by M.L. Dogg (Broadway: STRAIGHT WHITE MEN), and projection design by Brad Peterson (Broadway: FISH IN THE DARK), with casting by Stephanie Klapper, the production stage manager is Christine Catti and General Manager/Producer is Julie Crosby.

He directed the world-premiere musical OPEN HEART and produced THE BUBBLY BLACK GIRL SHEDS HER CHAMELEON SKIN Off-Broadway. His various film credits include WHAT WOMEN WANT, WHERE THE HEART IS, WHAT MEN WANT and THE KEEPING ROOM.

John Pasquin (Director) is a director, and producer of film, television, and theatre. His first play in New York was Michael Weller's Moonchildren, for which he won an Obie. Law." He has also directed four films including THE SANTA CLAUSE, and MISS CONGENIALITY II.

Live at Top to Top: AR/VR adoption curve ticking up      Cache   Translate Page
Top 2 Top: AR/VR emergence
The augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) headsets that have shown potential, but limited adoption, among CPGs, brand owners, and food and beverage manufacturers seem to finally be gaining traction in operations.

At PMMI’s exclusive Top to Top meeting held this week, a panel consisting of two forward-thinking brand owners and another like-minded packaging machinery OEM ticked off a laundry list of best practices, hurdles, and solutions for deploying the technology.

“I had been monitoring the technology, but the tipping point for me was that the form factor for certain types of glasses [Vuzix in this case] finally matched what would otherwise be typical safety glasses,” one brand owner said. “The moment I saw that, I thought, ‘OK, it’s ready for production, since we wear safety glasses anyways.”

Still, he warned, it will change again within six months, and again a few months after that. The speed at which the AR/VR technology is developing across industry means that it quickly becomes obsolete. But for early adopters, being ahead of the curve has been worth the constant treadmill of keeping up with new features and capabilities.

The brand owner described an FAT that was to be held halfway around the world. Only a fraction of the team needed to go, while the remaining team members stayed home, but were visually and audibly patched in, via the AR 3D space, to accompany the field team on the FAT. He said that cost savings paid for their fledgling AR/VR program then and there, upon first use.

Content creation burden
The benefit to in terms of live troubleshooting or live remote FAT/SAT support obviate themselves. But more sophisticated uses may require more input, such as developing and maintaining documentation and content in the form of instruction manuals, video troubleshooting, etc. that’s to be made available via the headpiece/hardware. This takes time and effort to develop, but the other brand owner who implemented this tech mentioned an unforeseen benefit. He was forced to clean, refresh, and update an old and disorganized instruction-style content. Having such documents available at the touch of the AR glasses means they’re more regularly consulted – content obsolescence was recognized and eliminated.

The same brand owner uses the AR/VR glasses in conjunction with QR codes located throughout processing and packaging machines in his plant. The QR codes care pertinent information such as safety instructions, red/yellow/green status, live data for temperature, speed, vibration, and various other KPIs related, in real time, at a glance of someone wearing the headset. Again, that means there’s some back-end in work in keeping the associated information, safety standards, and other content is updated and available. This brand owner is still working on developing a training program with courses that new hires can take with the AR/VR headset, as well.

What brand owners want to use it for is a thornier issue, and the following issues continue to hamper long term adoption:

  • There are a lot of different formats, software, and levels of sophistication. As different OEMs choose or standardize on different formats, that means CPG customers, who have many different OEM supplier partners, may be forced to learn many different AR/VR formats. [Note: One OEM that serves several industries indicated they support 85 formats including digital
  • Sometimes the technology is more than you need – will a simple video do the job? This could be a both/and situation in which the troubleshooting video is part of the AR/VR content. When the pre-loaded video doesn’t do the job, the same headset that shows the video can also remotely connect to a maintenance person in another state, or an OEM for service or remote diagnostics.
  • Remote diagnostics themselves are an issue and evokes the larger IT/OT divide. Will a CPG allow video from live production to exit the four walls of the plant? Will they even allow a cell phone in to provide a hotspot?
  • Battery life is currently around two hours when the headset is completing heavy lifting like sharing video remotely but can extend to eight hours when completing more mundane tasks.

For OEMs, the potential benefits are clear. CPG and brand owner adoption, based largely on uncertainty around remote access, seem to be the largest stumbling block. Here are a few potential benefits to OEMs:

  • Instead of sending two people to a service call, one experienced, and one junior to learn, the junior could go alone knowing that experienced reinforcement can remote in.
  • Remote training and trouble-shooting remotely
  • Custom machinery builders can use the platform to constantly course correct and maintain contact with the end user throughout the project, making adjustments on the fly and reducing rework. “They can see what we’re doing through our eyes, so they don’t have to send someone every time there’s an alteration on the design – we can show them remotely,” the OEM said.

The question then becomes whether the CPG or the OEM should ‘own’ the platform. Many vendors with many platforms, as has been mentioned, maybe a hurdle that prevents end user adoption.

Should CPGs, then, take the lead on ‘owning’ the AR/VR platform and sharing it with (or specifying it to) their machinery or controls/components vendors? Usually the expense occurred by CPGs would make this a nonstarter, but the low barrier to entry as far as AR/VR cost may make this realistic. And not only realistic, it could be practical in preventing yet another situation in which many OEMs develop their own disparate, proprietary AR/VR programs, with CPGs and brand owners having to learn many different formats from all their vendors. The coming years will probably decide where the balance of platform ‘ownership’ falls: the OEM or the end user of equipment.

More: Here is a smattering of other pragmatic tips for starting an AR/VR program, wherever you stand on the supply chain:

1. College campus experiment
An adage about college campuses juxtaposes the paved walkways that represent the planned routes with the worn foot trails and shortcuts through the grass that appear on college campuses. The former lead were planners aimed to have people walk, the later represented where students actually walked.

The brand owner panelist elicited this dynamic while presenting to impress upon attendees that implementation should be a function of addressing a need rather than implementing for the sake of implementing.

“We set up people to walk one way only to discover they want to walk somewhere else,” he said. “You don’t want that to happen with your AR/VR program. Start using it, but wait and watch to see where people want to use it, where people find value in it, rather than dictating it be used when it might be a square peg in a round hole. Don’t pick the tool and then go try to find the problem. And don’t use the tool to try to solve the problem you think they have. Instead, throw it out there and see what they do. Let the uses develop organically, then build on that. Adoption will improve because the application will be theirs based on their needs, not what you think they need.”

2. Engage an AR/VR champion
Simply using the technology is easy – five minutes out of the box is all it takes to be remotely recording and sharing content. “We were shocked by how simple it was to set up,” said one of the brand owners. He also pointed to the fact that the it’s a technology that tends to excite millennials—plus, thanks to video games and other electronic experiences they grew up with, AR/VR is a space they’re naturally familiar with in ways previous generations might not be. So, implementation can be an engaging responsibility for the right type of person.

3. Beware one-size-fits-all approach from vendors
Currently AR/VR headsets are deployed across industry, including everything from oil and gas to gaming. Be sure you’re working with someone who understands your needs, and knows they are quite different from others to avoid costly upcharges for features you don’t need.

Every revolution eats its own      Cache   Translate Page
Brian Sudano
Local crafts are beating national ones at their own game.

Craft beer is as healthy as ever as the shift from big brands to smaller micro-brands rolls on, putting pressure on all of the national players, craft or otherwise. In American craft beer, the students are becoming the masters and now the old masters need to adjust to these ambitious students. Just as big domestic beer gave way to crafts and imports over the past three decades, the best known national craft brands and many of the flagship imports are now giving way to a seemingly unstoppable pipeline of local and regional microbrews. We are now well into this new stage of the craft brewing revolution where these local and regional brands are taking market share from everyone across the spectrum, especially the craft flagships which built the industry as we know it today.

Not your father’s craft beer
With flavors and styles wildly different from the classic macro brews of Budweiser, Miller, and Coors, craft has always held a unique spot for more adventurous and experimental drinkers. But with the craft brew revolution in its fourth decade, the flagship brands like Sam Adams, Sierra Nevada, and Fat Tire are now part of the national beer establishment alongside the global industry stalwarts. As consumers, Millennials and Generation Z are accustomed to constant innovation and have a very visible preference for locally produced offerings. This is seen across many product categories, not just beer. The proliferation of local beer brands fits right into the Millennial and Gen Z wheelhouse and, as a result, it appears that there’s no end in sight to the small brand market share smash and grab we’re seeing in real time.

Even with its challenges, craft is still by far the class of American beer. An over-reliance on the IPA style, the specter of possible over-capacity, and the up and down quality of many local breweries are, and will always be, challenges. Additionally, the market is getting more crowded and the law of big numbers is a cruel master. Craft will slow at one point, it’s inevitable. But for now, the curious young consumer is well on board and the category remains the healthiest part of the beer industry. Our current numbers and future projections reflect this.

Crafts will continue to take share
Here at Beverage Marketing Corp., in our DrinkTell™ database, we estimate total beer will be down about 1% in 2018. However, we project craft beer will grow volume slightly above +4%, reaching just short of 21 million barrels for an industry market share of 10.4% based on our craft definition, a new record. Looking ahead, we expect craft will continue to churn along nicely from 2018 to 2022 at an annual volume growth rate between +3 to +4%. It should reach an industry share of 12% by 2022, an unthinkable level 20 years ago. The growth we see ahead will be driven primarily by hundreds and maybe thousands of new small brands finding their way from brew pubs and small breweries into the mainstream.

Our on-trade research provides a detailed view into the small craft beer brand trend. Beverage Marketing Corp.’s 2018 On-Premise Intelligence Report, produced in partnership with Technomic, provides a clear view into what’s really going on in the on-trade, where the war for the consumer is fought every day and craft is winning. Not surprisingly, consumers aged 21-34 are increasingly seeking out adult beverages in off-beat locations like casinos and bowling alleys. In many occasions, alcohol is a primary traffic driver and adds real value to the overall experience. Tap and tasting rooms are another emerging segment finding traction with consumers, playing well into craft’s strengths.

The numbers tell us that craft is winning at the traditional bar as well. Our data shows craft beer in the on-premise grew +3.4% last year versus a flat beer category, a great performance. However, each of the top five on-premise craft brands shrunk in 2018 and these five brands make up 20% of total craft sales in the on-premise. Normally, if the top five brands of a category were shrinking, there would be great cause for alarm. However, the ‘all others’—overwhelmingly the small locals—grew +5%. Most of these ‘all other’ brands have less than two million cases of volume individually, so the minnows are overwhelming the sharks at the bar.

The menu tells the story, and craft is winning that valuable real estate. Although craft beers make up slightly more than 10% of industry volumes, according to our research the category accounts for a whopping 45% of beer menu offerings. That compares to 25% for imports, 23% for domestics and 7% for all other malt beverage choices. Additionally, that number is up year-on-year +7%. Anecdotally, we see the evidence as plain as day in our channel checks. In our recent trade tour of downtown Atlanta, restaurant menus were overrun with craft. In most accounts we visited, we had to ask the server specifically for the menu of domestic macro beer options. Getting the local Georgia brand SweetWater was far easier than getting a Budweiser and that’s becoming all too common for the big brewers.

Where do we go from here?
We think the small craft beer players have three real advantages that they will use to continue pecking away at market share. First, they can avoid many of the mistakes made by their elders whether it be in product quality or marketing. Second, the young consumer is more on board with local and innovation than any time in recent memory, a wave that can be ridden for some time. Third, the big brewers seem to have no answers, and that’s certainly not being fixed any time soon. Craft’s outlook is still enviable.

Lush is celebrating 30 years of effervescence with its biggest bath bomb launch yet: 54 new iterations are set to drop globally online and in stores later this month.

Baths have become somewhat of a staple in millennials' lives, and the process of taking one wouldn't be half as dreamy without the innovations that Lush has brought us over the years. From the classic Butterball, a cocoa-butter based skin softener scented with vanilla musk, to the best-selling Intergalactic, a colorful, "out-of-this-world" experience with refreshing peppermint and neon colors, to The Big Sleep Jelly Bomb, a relaxing blend of fresh lavender oil and neroli that soothed John Mayer so much that he wrote a song about it.

Some eclectic new additions include a citrus-scented Sushi Roll bath bomb, a fuchsia Lucky Cat infused with ylang ylang, neroli, and jasmine, and a treasure box-shaped Pirates of the Carrageenan. Do we have your attention yet? In addition to these new scents, the brand is re-launching some fan favorites, like the OG Lush bath bomb blend Blackberry and Honey I Washed The Kids, a caramel and honey scent that has practically garnered a cult following.

If you're based in Austin, Texas, or are in town for SXSW, you can shop the goods at the brand's pop-up or at its downtown Austin and Domain Center stores. Either way, you won't have to wait super long to get your hands on them: All 54 new bath bombs are set to launch online and in stores globally on March 29.

Get Your (Comic) Con On      Cache   Translate Page
Tips and tricks to make the most of your comic con. by Nathalie Graham

"Hey! Con virgins! Want a ribbon?" a woman in a booth yelled at me and my childhood best friend, Kyra.

We were embarrassed for being singled out, but even more embarrassed that she could see what we were so desperately trying to hide: This was our first con. Were we giving off a new-con smell? We slunk over to her. She welcomed us to San Diego Comic-Con and handed us two neon-pink ribbons that read "CON VIRGIN" in big black letters. We tucked them discreetly in our bags.

We quickly realized how magical—and exhausting—cons are. You're among thousands of people who share the same unbridled enthusiasm you do. It's crazy! But we crashed and burned in several different arenas—like naively waiting three hours in a miles-long line for the coveted Game of Thrones panel—and vowed to be better prepared next year.

I've been to numerous cons since then, big and small, and while I still haven't learned how to con right, I've learned how to con better. Here are some tips.

1. Plan ahead and be realistic

I hate planning. I still haven't figured out Google Calendar and I'm straddling the millennial/Gen Z generational line! But when you're headed to a con, especially a bigger con, it pays to prep. You want to go to Star Wars Origami but that Buffy cast reunion you've been dying to see starts 10 minutes later, and it's across the convention center? You're going to have to prioritize. The con schedule is usually posted online weeks before the actual event. Find it, save it, and filter out your must-sees from your sure-why-nots. Also, check your con's social- media pages religiously; there will likely be key updates posted there during the event.

It's impossible to see everything. There will be heartbreak, giveaways you'll miss, long lines that best you. Understand this now and be okay with it: You cannot do it all.

2. Give yourself time to wander

Take some time to explore the con floor—that's where you can buy your figurines and your comics, where you can try out new video games or duke it out in a Magic: The Gathering competition or stroll through artist alley and get some prints for your mom since you don't have the wall space anymore.

3. Bring some essentials

Snacks!
You're going to be on your feet all day, and your only options for food will be whatever crap they sell on the convention floor or the Cheesecake Factory across the street. Nuts, dried fruit, power bars—bring stuff that stays in your system and keeps you from biting your friend's head off when she won't shut up about that one celebrity she's dying to see.

Water!
This is a given. I've seen people faint at cons. There are lots of bodies and lots of excitement. Lube up your system!

Deodorant!
You'll quickly discover many of your fellow con attendees are not habitually hygienic. Don't be that guy. Roll on some Speed Stick before you go, and reapply throughout the con as needed.

Cash!
Ditch your card if you can and bring a fixed amount of cash. It's too easy to spend when all you have to do is swipe, especially when there are photo-ops and autographs and you know that just one more will guarantee you'll hit it off with that actor, did you see how he smiled at you last time???

A back-up battery!
...and a fat data plan. Vying for service is tough in a crowded place. Plus, you'll need to check social media and your con schedule regularly. You don't want your phone to die. (Pro tip: If you're planning on waiting in long lines, consider bringing a power strip to share with your line mates.)

4. Choose supportive shoes

I about shredded my heels wearing Converse high tops to my first con. If you're cosplaying and can't walk long distances in your costume shoes, consider bringing backups.

This is very much Con 101, and like anything else, you'll learn best by doing. And there are plenty of cons coming up where you can practice—so have at it!

The investment millennials are turning to instead of property      Cache   Translate Page
Millennials now make up 29% of all exchange traded fund investors in Australia, compared to 19% five years ago.
"Honey, I Shrunk the Flat!" - Budget Housing Sizes See Most Decline in 5 Years      Cache   Translate Page

  • Properties within INR 40 lakh budget see 23% fall in average sizes – from 750 sq. ft. in 2014 to 580 sq. ft. in 2018.
  • Avg. property sizes in top 7 cities decline by 17% in 5 years; from 1,390 sq. ft. in 2014 to 1,100 sq. ft. in 2018.
  • Bangalore sees least size reduction at 12%, MMR tops with 27% average decrease.

When it comes to housing, size matters for all kinds of reasons. The added floor space of larger homes definitely spells comfort, convenience and family scalability, every additional square foot either comes at a higher price or pushes available options further away from the central regions of a city.

Millennial homebuyers have already made it clear that they prefer affordability coupled with good location over larger-sized homes in the far-flung suburbs. Simultaneously, developers are intent on making their housing projects more pocket-friendly for a higher customer base.

As a result, the top 7 Indian cities collectively saw average apartment sizes shrink by nearly 17% between 2014 and 2018. However, this has not been a uniform phenomenon.

  • Among the top cities, MMR topped the list with a 27% average decrease in apartment sizes – from 960 sq. ft in 2014 to 700 sq. ft. in 2018.

  • Bangalore saw least decline in average property size at around 12% in five years. The current average apartment size in Bangalore is 1,260 sq. ft. Interestingly, prior to 2017, the average sizes in Bangalore fluctuated by merely 1-2% y-o-y; in 2018, they dropped by over 12% against the preceding year.

  • Hyderabad currently has the highest average property sizes about 1,600 sq. ft., Property buyers in Hyderabad have traditionally preferred large-sized homes, which dovetails favourably with the fact that property prices here have been more realistic than in most other cities.

A major factor contributing to the shrinking apartment sizes across most metros is the rising demand for budget-friendly housing. With property prices going overboard in most metros, developers have been reducing sizes to align their offerings more with the actual homebuyer demand.

The Millennial Connection

Another reason for shrinking apartment sizes is that most millennial homebuyers are averse to investing in both the higher maintenance costs and extra efforts that larger properties entail. However, this is not their only reason - Millennials actually prefer to own smaller homes.

Millennials attribute high value on location flexibility and do not get 'tied to' neighbourhoods the way the previous generations did. Frequent 'switching' of cities is rapidly becoming the new normal for millennials on the lookout for faster career growth. Also, they're in no hurry to marry and start families.

Live-in relationships are becoming more popular and socially acceptable, and more and more young people give high priority to career growth before deciding to marry and 'settle down'. The average age of marriage in India has increased from age 21-25 in previous years to age 30-35 in recent years.

Compact housing is the fastest seller on the resale market, so such homes gives millennials both locational and financial flexibility while simultaneously allowing them the security and investment advantages of homeownership.

The increasing preference for smaller homes by what is arguably India's most solvent age demographic contrasts sharply with the onus on larger flats in previous years. It took developers quite a while to understand and accept it - one of the main reasons why there is so much unsold mid-range housing inventory on the market today.

Segment-wise apartment reduction

  • The maximum reduction in average property sizes was seen in the budget housing segment priced < INR 40 lakhs. The average size of homes priced below INR 40 lakh was 750 sq. ft. in 2014, and it reduced by 23% in 2018.

  • Interestingly, apartment sizes in the luxury housing segment (priced above INR 80 lakh) also saw a 20% reduction over the last 5 years. The average size of properties in this segment was 1,830 sq. ft. in 2014, which came down to 1,460 sq. ft. in 2018.

  • Mid-segment housing priced between INR 40 - 80 lakhs saw the least size reduction of 17% - from 1,150 sq. ft. in 2014 to around 950 sq. ft. in 2018.

The reduction in flat size has invariably been achieved by the elimination of extra balconies - and in many cases all balconies - and better apartment designs that allow more efficient use of smaller spaces.

Minnesota Pastor: Mall Shook up

For Christian Pastor Ramin Parsa, a trip to the Mall of America ended up being a lot more than he bargained for. When two Muslim women asked him to answer some questions about his faith, the conversation seemed harmless. That all changed when mall security arrived, convinced the police to book him for trespassing, and locked him up.

Now, after seven months of fighting the charges, Parsa had good news. “Praise the Lord! The prosecution is suspended, no more criminal charges, pleaded not guilty! Thank you so much for your prayers. We have resolved the criminal case and the city is not going to prosecute me further, so the city is out of it. The mall’s conduct still needs to be addressed. There are many options available that we are considering. Stay tuned! And please continue praying for more victories ahead!”

With the help of his attorneys, Parsa is considering his legal options, especially since there was no basis for putting him in “mall jail” for hours on end — without food, water, or access to a restroom. Intolerant people, he believes, have to be held accountable. Especially, he told PJ Media’s Tyler O'Neil, here — in America — where our liberties are our most sacred possessions. “When I became a Christian,” he explained, “‘I was stabbed [and] ran away from Iran. I went to Turkey for two years as a refugee. We had a church and we were passing out Bibles. I was arrested [there].’ When at last he came to America, he was relieved. ‘With tears in my eyes, I was so thankful to be in America, where I can express myself, nobody can stop me or oppress me for my faith… and then this happened to me.’”

There comes a time, and Pastor Parsa agrees, when fighting injustice like this isn’t just about standing up for yourself. It’s about defending the rights that affect other people. “If we don’t wake up, our cities, states, country will be lost,” he warned. Talking to two shoppers about Christ isn’t a crime, no matter how offended someone else may be by his religious expression. This pastor and Christians like him have a responsibility to share the gospel, especially when they’re asked to explain the faith they have. “As Christians, we must lay aside lukewarmness, and foolish arguments and shake the dust of religion and legalism and get on fire for Jesus and share the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ with boldness.”

That’s what he did — and he’s determined to pave the way for everyone else in Minnesota to do the same. If Christians don’t make it clear that we won’t tolerate this kind of discrimination, what will stop these activists from coming after other people of faith? We have to use the law as a deterrent for this kind of religious hostility — especially since it’s on our side!

BRAIN IN REVERSE! Joe Scarborough States Anti-Semitism Is Less About Dems, More About Trump

It’s always fun to see how the Leftists will deal scandal within their realm. As they now begin to emerge as the party of antisemitism, Joe Scarborough of “Morning Joe” took a shot at saving face and doing what Dem’s do best; finding a way to turn the issue around on President Trump.

As reported by Newsbusters:

MSNBC’s Morning Joe kicked off the week by discussing President Trump’s reaction to the controversy surrounding Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar and how House Democrats have responded to her dual loyalty comments. Co-host Joe Scarborough asked Jake Sherman of Politico if Trump, as part of his 2020 re-elcection campaign, would, “Continue to paint Democrats as the anti-Jewish party, despite his own checkered past.”

Sherman agreed, saying that Omar has provided Republicans an opportunity that they have been seeking for years: a chance to show how the Democratic Party has drifted away from Israel in recent years coupled with a resolution “that was a bit too light for their liking.” Sherman described the controversy as “a convenient punching bag” and that Trump is putting “one of the first Muslim females in Congress… on a pedestal in a sense and then knocking her down and saying she’s emblematic of all Democrats, which is obviously not the case.”

It would be fair to ask why, if Omar’s issues aren’t “emblematic” of the Democrats, why they corporately decided against removing her, or at least reprimanding her. Wouldn’t one of those penalties have shown that they thought her actions were inappropriate?  But no, they actually defended her!

Yet after all of this evidence, Scarborough later goes on to imply that it’s the Republicans, not the Democrats, who are the antisemitic ones.

Newsbusters continues:

Scarborough likes to say that Trump is a chronic liar, but has spent the better part of the last month lying about Kevin McCarthy’s tweets warning of progressive money. He then led Confessore with more of a statement than a question, “Again, if we want to add up anti-Semitic tropes, Nick, Republicans, they’re going to win this one by a landslide.”

It wouldn’t surprise me that the brainless followers of “Morning Joe” would believe this narrative without actually needing proof. Some of the validation used focused on people that Trump doesn’t even know, or claim to associate with.

Newsbusters continues:

Confessore began by adding to Scarborough’s list, reminding the morning show co-host of David Duke’s support for Trump and Trump refusing to distance himself by saying he was unfamiliar with Duke’s views. Confessore, and the media at large, have not bothered to take notice of Duke saying that Omar, “By Defiance to Z.O.G. Ilhan Omar is NOW the most important Member of the US Congress!” Confessore declared that, “If there is a repository for anti-Jewish sentiments in politics today, it is chiefly on the right.”

Confessore’s statement that anti-Semitism is “chiefly on the right” may be contrasted with anarticle from his own employer in October entitled, “Is It Safe to be Jewish in New York?,“ where the commanding officer of the Hate Crimes task force told Ginia Bellafante in the previous 22 months, “not one person caught or identified as the aggressor in an anti-Semitic hate crime has been associated with a far right-wing group.”

So if not a single antisemitic hate crime in New York has been associated with a FAR RIGHT WING GROUP, does that imply the FAR LEFT WING GROUP? Methinks so. Regardless, only a nincompoop would say that Pelosi and the Democrats are speaking out against antisemitism.

Newsbusters continues:

Despite lambasting Democrats for cowardly hiding behind their “anti-hate resolution” on Friday, Scarborough on Monday declared that, “Nancy Pelosi and the Democratic leadership, man, they are shoulder to shoulder, strong, speaking out against anti-Semitism.”

Should Women Be Expected To Know How To Change A Tyre?

A failure of feminism?

What happens when a Millennial breaks down on the side of the road? New research reveals very few will get out their tyre-changing kit — or even know what that is.

Drivers under 25 are more likely to post about their situation on social media, as Gold Coast friends Leah Heritage and Molly McMahon did when they chronicled their recent flat tyre experience.

Leah was in that situation when her dad texted her back saying he warned her to check her tyres a week earlier. The girls had been trying to get to a picnic with friends and had no idea what to do.

The data from Driver Safety Australia shows three in four drivers under 25 are driving a car more than a decade old, but most of them don’t undertake regular checks on it, either leaving it to someone else or naively believing a warning light will alert them to any safety issue.

Young drivers are two times more likely to blow $50 on a meal out with friends than fix a broken headlight or worn windscreen wiper.   They’re even more likely to spend money cleaning their car than they are fixing a critical safety issue. Alarmingly, the research also shows two in five drivers under 25 have knowingly driven a car with a safety issue.

Driver Safety Australia boss Russell White said the frightening research was not only endangering the lives of young drivers but road users more generally.

“Car crashes happen in an instant, and in that moment having a car in safe condition can be the difference between life and death,” Mr White said. “Every driver has a responsibility to ensure they’re taking precautions to keep themselves and those around them safe.

“Whether that’s tyre tread and being able to brake in time or having adequate vision in different weather conditions with working wipers or headlights.

“On top of these safety concerns, there’s also the added risk of being stranded when broken down on the side of the road. We continue to see serious injuries and fatalities as a result of being struck in high-traffic areas, which can often be avoided.”

The research shows attitude isn’t the problem but a lack of skills and knowledge.

While a third of young drivers said they didn’t know anything about basic car checks, almost the same amount believed being able to maintain their vehicle was an important skill that every driver should know.

Most were willing to learn, which is why Driver Safety Australia has teamed up with Supercheap Auto in a new campaign to educate young drivers.

“Check It” is an Australia-wide initiative that will raise awareness around the importance of undertaking regular vehicle safety checks.

On March 30, free training will be provided across Supercheap Auto’s 278 Australian stores, and tutorials are also available online.

Australians claiming to be Aboriginal will be forced to undergo DNA testing to prove it under a One Nation proposal to crack down on welfare fraud

There are Australian versions of Elizabeth Warren

One Nation's New South Wales leader Mark Latham has taken aim at people who identify as indigenous, when they are not of Aboriginal heritage. 'Everybody hates a welfare rorter, especially in Aboriginal affairs,' he said.

'Australians are sick and tired of seeing people with blonde hair and blue eyes declaring themselves to be indigenous, when clearly they have no recognisable Aboriginal background and are doing it solely to qualify for extra money.'

In Australia, people can identify as indigenous to be given special treatment when applying for jobs in the public service or the ABC, as part of an affirmative action policy designed to promote one minority group.

They also qualify for special benefits, including Abstudy to fund university study or an apprenticeship, and can join an Aboriginal land council.

Mr Latham has proposed a law which would require Aboriginality to be determined by a DNA test showing someone has at least one full-blood Aboriginal grandparent, ending a system where Australians can self-identify as indigenous.

'The system of indigenous self-identification, declaring Aboriginality without any bloodline or DNA proof, has been open to widespread abuse,' he said. 'It is being used as a fraudulent way of cashing in on welfare benefits, special Aboriginal programs and land council largesse.'

Mr Latham said genuine indigenous people continue to live in poverty. 'Any waste of taxpayer funds in this area is highly disrespectful to genuine indigenous,' he said. 'It weakens the integrity of their racial group and takes money away from people in genuine need.

'We believe in an honest and fair welfare system. 'First Australians deserve the respect of stopping rorters and opportunists from masquerading as indigenous.'

While indigenous recognition is largely a federal issue, the NSW public service has an Aboriginal employment strategy and administers indigenous land councils.

As federal Labor leader in 2004, Mr Latham backed then Prime Minister John Howard's dismantling of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission.

Almost 15 years later, as One Nation's leader upper house candidate in the NSW election, he has savaged his former party for failing to tackle fraudulent claims of being Aboriginal. 'It's surprising that Labor and The Greens, who pretend to respect Aboriginality, have not introduced this policy already,' Mr Latham said.

Indigenous people were not counted in the Census or even regarded as citizens with voting rights until a 1967 referendum passed with 90.77 per cent support. A few years later during the early 1970s, Gough Whitlam's Labor government introduced a policy of indigenous self-determination.

Indigenous land rights activist Noel Pearson has criticised the prevailing system of 'passive welfare' which originated under Mr Whitlam, who Mr Latham worked for as a former prime minister during the 1980s.

Political correctness is most pervasive in universities and colleges but I rarely report the  incidents concerned here as I have a separate blog for educational matters.

American "liberals" often deny being Leftists and say that they are very different from the Communist rulers of  other countries.  The only real difference, however, is how much power they have.  In America, their power is limited by democracy.  To see what they WOULD be like with more power, look at where they ARE already  very powerful: in America's educational system -- particularly in the universities and colleges.  They show there the same respect for free-speech and political diversity that Stalin did:  None.  So look to the colleges to see  what the whole country would be like if "liberals" had their way.  It would be a dictatorship.

Bottle and can collectors      Cache   Translate Page

I know that seeing someone sort through your recycling bin on the curb can put you on edge but can y’all just chill out a bit or sort your cans and bottles into your yellow bin?

Not everyone digging in cans is looking to fuel their drug addiction. Some of us are just trying to buy groceries and pay rent.

Do you think I like digging through your cat food tins and amazon boxes for .10¢ a can? Not my first choice or my full time job.
Just a broke millennial trying to make ends meet.

Anny Aurora is a super-hot millennial who married an older man. We all know why a 20-something would marry a 50-something, right? Or...maybe we should say the one thing Anny didn't marry an older man for was the sex. Do you honestly think a hot, horny woman like Anny would bang a middle-aged dude with a small ween? Her hubby knows this as well, which is why we're here today: it's their anniversary, and Hubby has a whole week of activities planned: fancy dinners and lavish gifts...even a vacation! Before all that, he's about to present Anny with what will be her most-favorite gift: two young, hung studs. Their balls are loaded with cum, too! Anny's going to give up all three holes to both men, which is much more than Hubby ever gets!! And do we really need to tell you who's gonna clean up all that mess?!

Comment on Auschwitz survivor donates to Holocaust studies program by Antoinette Fischer      Cache   Translate Page
I applaud Tibor Hallo for his ingenious initiative and generosity. I have always been a proponent of the study of world history. Mister Hallo is correct about genocides. The genocides that I have discovered through the study of history are astonishing! It's pretty shocking to me that millennials, who appear to be so well-educated, are so ignorant about World War II and the Holocaust. The greatest generation should be honored and we are fortunate that there are still some survivors among Us. The study of what they sacrificed for us has had a great impact upon my life. Mr. Tibor Hallo is a great man for fostering this type of education which leads to the understanding that we must never, ever allow a dictator to take over and rob us of democracy and the freedoms that we enjoy and take for granted. THANK YOU, TIBOR HALLO!

Thank you, Anthony, for stating what we all need to hear. From mentoring, to degree requirements, to continuing education, to understanding the fundamental principles of technology, you hit all the major elements of what is needed — or not needed — to "save" our noble profession. We, being licensed professionals, NCEES, NSPS, state associations, state boards, and members of academia, all need to heed the thoughts and opinions of our young surveyors if we are to see our profession sustained.

This is right in line with Neil Howe's and William Strauss' Fourth Turning generational theory. So, Gen Z : Beatniks :: Gen X : Lost *or* Millennial : Boomer :: Greatest : Progressive. Alternatively, Gen Z : Gen X :: Beatniks : Lost *or* Millennial : Greatest :: Boomer : Progressive. History rhymes but doesn't repeat, specifically, every other generation. HOWEVER, there's an historically antagonistic relationship between generations of similar but not identical type. i.e., Millennials and Boomers are both "revolutionary" generations - large cohorts that engineer conformity to institutional change or values change, respectively - and Gen Z and Gen X are both "transition" generations - small cohorts that must focus on individual survival out of the necessity of living through (in the wake of) revolutionary fallout / uncertainty. So Millennials have little sympathy for Boomers, and vice versa, but tremendous respect for Greatest (since Millennials and Greatest are "identical" generations, both coming of age during a 4th Turning...)

The forthcoming launch shares a monochromatic look as it's dressed in "Millenial Pink" -- a color she discovered while traveling, styling and modeling. The model is also constructed with nubuck leather featuring bright crimson accents found on the heel, midsole and additional branding areas.

Abena, âgée de 18 ans, a récemment lu Children of Blood and Bone de Tomi Adeyemi.

BWW Review: In STRAIGHT, a New Generation Tackles Tough Questions About Sexuality and Identity, at triangle productions!      Cache   Translate Page

If you read the headlines, it seems like we may be on the brink of a post-equality era, at least as far as sexuality and identity go. A 2017 GLAAD study found that 20% of people aged 18-34 identified as LGBTQ and that many are eschewing the traditional binaries of gay/straight and man/woman altogether. The younger generation appears even more fluid -- in one survey, less than half of Gen Z identified as "exclusively heterosexual."

But does that mean the struggle is over? Have the younger generations really been able to shrug off the guilt and shame that has long been associated with coming out?

Not that easily, according to Scott Elmegreen and Drew Fornarola's STRAIGHT, now playing at triangle productions! While Millennials may give lip service to acceptance, this powerful and thought-provoking play suggests that they still have some work to do when it comes to accepting themselves as something other than "exclusively heterosexual."

STRAIGHT focuses on Ben, a 26-year-old investment banker with a six-figure income and a devoted girlfriend who's ready for marriage and children, or at least to move in together. Although they clearly love each other and have a relationship that's enviable in many ways, Emily doesn't fulfill all of Ben's needs. So, he uses a dating app and finds Chris, a 20-year-old college student. As Ben and Chris's clandestine relationship deepens, Ben wrestles with how he identifies and what he wants his life to look like.

I thought STRAIGHT was among the best shows I've seen at triangle. The script places the characters on the knife's edge between adolescence and adulthood, and the three young actors -- Zachary Taylor Warner as Ben, Jennie Spector as Emily, and Colin Kane as Chris -- do a great job of walking this edge and wrestling with their characters' complex emotions with both humor and insight.

This show isn't for everyone (note: it contains sexual situations, and children under 18 aren't admitted unless they're accompanied by an adult). But if you're interested in discussions of sexuality and society, or just want to know what issues young people are dealing with today, then it's for you.

STRAIGHT runs through March 23. More details and tickets here.

Houston rapper Trill Sammy started out when he was just in high school, part of the generation of millennial rappers who utilized social media to spread their music. After posting his short freestyle with Born Stunna, "Netflix and Chill," in 2015, he went viral with local fans and continued to build a following online. With a sound similar to Lil Uzi Vert and Migos, the young Texan adopted an Atlanta trap sound aimed at putting the spotlight on his hometown. Sammy's first big break came in 2015 on the joint track "Just Watch" with fellow Houston rapper Dice Soho, head of the local Icey Gang crew. Sammy released "Check Out" in 2016, a video game-sampling dose of laid-back trap with Auto-Tune and a Desiigner-esque beat. His debut EP, Red Album, also arrived that year, featuring Soulja Boy on the track "Trappin'," as well as appearances by Slim Thug and Kirko Bangz. He quickly followed with the Trappin' EP that summer, which included the tracks "Uber Everywhere" and "Martin." In 2018, he issued singles "Do Not Disturb" and "Feel Better" with Rae Sremmurd's Slim Jxmmi.

12 Statistics That Prove The US Is Facing A Consumer Debt Apocalypse      Cache   Translate Page

Authored by Michael Snyder via The End of The American Dream blog,

In the entire history of the United States, consumers have never been in so much debt.  And that would not be a crisis as long as the vast majority of us were regularly making our debt payments, but as you will see below delinquency levels are starting to rise to extremely alarming levels.  In fact, some of the numbers that are coming in are even worse than we witnessed at any point during the last recession.  If things are this bad already, what are they going to look like once the economy really gets bad?

Because even though it appears that we are heading into a new recession, according to the Federal Reserve it has not officially begun yet.  That means that much worse is yet to come.  Just like last time, millions of Americans will likely lose their jobs, and without an income most of those that suddenly find themselves unemployed will not be able to pay their bills.  The stage is set for the largest tsunami of consumer debt defaults that this country has ever seen, and that will absolutely devastate major financial institutions all across America.

If you think that I am exaggerating even a little bit, please read over the following list very carefully.  The following are 12 statistics that prove that the U.S. is facing a consumer debt apocalypse…

#1 Total consumer debt in the United States just surpassed the 4 trillion dollar mark.  That has never happened before in all of U.S. history.

#2 When you throw in mortgages and all other kinds of individual debt, U.S. consumers are now 13.5 trillion dollars in debt.

#3 A whopping 480 million credit cards are in circulation in this country.  That number has shot up by nearly 13 percent since 2015.

#4 U.S. consumers are carrying 870 billion dollars worth of balances on their credit cards right now.

#5 56 percent of Americans that currently have credit card balances have been carrying them for more than a year.

#6 The number of “seriously delinquent”credit card accounts in the U.S. has shot up to 37 million.

#7 Americans now owe a total of 1.3 trillion dollars on their auto loans.

#8 At this moment, more than 7 million Americans are delinquent on their auto loan payments.  The figure has already surpassed what we witnessed during the peak of the last recession by about a million.

#9 The total amount of student loan debt in the United States has reached the 1.5 trillion dollar mark.  Over the last 10 years, that number has more than doubled.

#10 Right now, more than 166 billion dollars in student loan debt is considered to be “seriously delinquent”.

#11 Millennials are now more than a trillion dollars in debt.  No generation of Americans has ever been deeper in debt at this stage in life.

#12 One recent survey found that 78 percent of Americans “are living paycheck to paycheck”.  Suffocating debt levels are a big reason why that figure is so incredibly high.

Since so many Americans are living paycheck to paycheck, that means that there is very little room for error.  During the last recession, large numbers of Americans immediately began getting behind on their bills once they were laid off, and we saw mortgage defaults rise to unprecedented levels.  Sadly, we haven’t learned from our past mistakes, and millions upon millions of Americans will find themselves drowning in an ocean of red ink once again during this next recession.

But even if you are not living paycheck to paycheck, carrying credit card balances is a very unwise thing to do.

Most Americans don’t realize that if you only make the minimum payment on a credit card every month, you can end up paying more in interest than you did for the original purchases.  The following comes from USA Today

If a credit-card borrower only made the minimum payments on $5,000 of debt, for example, they’d be in debt for more than 18 years and would end up paying $6,372 in interest based on national average interest rates, according to Ted Rossman, industry analyst for CreditCards.com.

If you keep playing this game, I promise you that you will never get rich.  Instead, the only people that will be getting wealthy will be the people that are receiving your debt payments.

Credit card debt is one of my pet peeves.  One of the best financial moves that anyone can make is to get out of credit card debt and never look back.

And that is particularly important at this juncture because the economy is really starting to slow down.  Compared to last year, U.S. job cut announcements were up 117 percent in February.

We haven’t seen anything like that since the last financial crisis.

At this point, even mainstream economists are openly admitting what is coming.  Mark Zandi, the chief economist at Moody’s Analytics, sounded downright gloomy in his most recent article…

The economy is throttling back. Way back. That’s the message in the near stall out of job growth last month. Job creation probably isn’t as bad as February’s disappointing numbers suggest — unusually poor weather played a role in limiting job growth to just 20,000 — but it is weaker than just a few months ago. Businesses are nervous, and sentiment is at risk of breaking if anything goes wrong.

And plenty could go wrong. A recession could materialize swiftly if businesses lose faith, and there is a good chance they will.

And when the next recession strikes, things are going to get very, very rough for U.S. consumers.

A consumer debt apocalypse is coming, and it is going to be incredibly painful.

Kid Fury & Crissle Bringing “The Read” to TV!!!      Cache   Translate Page

FUSE Media wasted no time in unveiling their slate of new and returning TV shows. We are getting a cooking show starring Young M.A. and a new adult animation show from the team behind the Boondocks and Black Dynamite, but what piqued OP’s interest the most? Hit podcast The Read Starring social media darlings Kid Fury and Crissle is becoming a TV show!

NEW SERIES

-Made From Scratch (Fuse network; 8 x 30’ episodes) – A prime example of the above-mentioned migration of content between platforms that has propelled the growth of Fuse’s audience, the pilot episode of the docu-cooking series featured Latinx rapper Young M.A bonding with her grandmother over food, and generated approximately 4 million views on YouTube. This led to Fuse Media greenlighting additional episodes featuring talent such as T-Pain and Ayo & Teo, and based on the success of those digital episodes, Fuse Media has now decided to turn Made From Scratch into a long-form series for its linear Fuse network, set to have its TV premiere later this year. Produced by the Fuse Content Studio.

-The Read with Kid Fury and Crissle West (working title) (Fuse network; 10 x 30’ episodes) – Inspired by their juggernaut podcast – with more than 85 million listens worldwide and 1.5 million unique listens a month – Kid Fury and Crissle host this talk/variety format that carries over their beloved segments like Hot Tops and The Read, while additionally featuring a special celebrity and/or musician guest. The duo uses their sharp, honest brand of cultural commentary and perceptive opinions to drill deep into the roots of the issues and stories affecting their millennial and Gen Z peers, from social justice and politics to dating and music culture, and everything in between. Chloe Pisello, David Martin, Jon Thoday, and Richard Allen-Turner of Avalon Television will Executive Produce. Kid Fury, Crissle West, and Alexandra Rago are also executive producers.

-Sugar and Toys (Fuse network; 10 x 30’ episodes, premieres June 9 at 11 p.m. ET/PT) – Fuse’s previously-announced first venture into adult animation, Sugar and Toys will premiere as part of Fuse’s new Sunday night programming block. Created by Carl Jones and Brian Ash, producers of Black Dynamite and The Boondocks, this series brings a wild new twist on the Saturday morning cartoons we all grew up with – but a whole lot less innocent. Adult comedy, social commentary and music culture parody crash the cartoon party, speaking directly to the trends and issues most relevant to a millennial audience, and bookended by host and multi-platinum rapper and actor KYLE (Netflix’ The After Party, www.superduperkyle.com). It is executive produced by Aengus James, Colin King Miller, Nicholaus Goossen, Jones and Ash, with Kyle Harvey serving as co-executive producer and Lalo Alcaraz as consulting producer, and produced by This is Just a Test and 245 Enterprises.
