Here are the high-flying financiers charged in the college-admissions cheating scandal      Cache   Translate Page

Stanford Universityturtix/Shutterstock

  • The Department of Justice on Tuesday charged 50 people with participating in a scheme to get students into colleges by cheating on entrance exams or bribing athletic coaches.
  • The parents charged include Hollywood stars, as well as executives at prominent companies, venture-capital firms, and law offices.

The Department of Justice on Tuesday unsealed documents charging dozens of people with participating in a nationwide college-admissions scam.

Among those parents indicted by the FBI are high-flying executives, wealthy real-estate developers, and Hollywood stars. A slew of financiers was also named in the case, including former Pimco CEO Douglas Hodge, Hercules Capital CEO Manuel A. Henriquez, and William McGlashan, a TPG managing partner.

High-ranking schools such as Georgetown University, Stanford University, Yale University, University of Texas at Austin, University of Southern California, Wake Forest University, and University of California, Los Angeles, also appeared in the indictment, court documents show. Federal prosecutors said the systematic scheme of bribery lasted more than eight years, from 2011 to 2019.

There were a number of finance executives charged. Business Insider has reached out to all of them for comment and will update this story if we hear back.

Robert Flaxman, cofounder of Crown Realty and Development

Matt Winkelmeyer/Getty Images for LAAA

Robert Flaxman cofounded the Costa Mesa, California-headquartered real-estate-development company Crown Realty and Development in 1994. The firm has been an active local developer in California, investing in a number of notable local projects, such as the retail center Venice Crossroads and a hotel, restaurant, office complex across from Angel Stadium of Anaheim.

Crown Realty and Development has a more than 2.3 million-square-foot portfolio that includes retail, hospitality, and industrial projects that spread across California, Arizona, Virginia, Idaho, and Northern California.

He is accused of participating in "both the college recruitment scheme and college entrance exam scheme." According to court records, he fabricated information on his son's application to the University of San Diego.

He was charged with "conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud."

Manuel A. Henriquez, founder and chairman of Hercules Capital

LinkedIn

Manuel Henriquez is the cofounder, chairman, and CEO at Hercules Technology Growth Capital, a Palo Alto, California-based venture-debt provider. The company was an early investor in Facebook.

According to his LinkedIn profile, he has worked in venture capital for over 30 years. Prior to Hercules, he was a partner at private equity fund, VantagePoint Venture Partners. He was also the founder of ON Technology, a software company backed by investors like Kleiner Perkins, Apple Computer, and more.

He and his wife, Elizabeth Henriquez, allegedly "participated in the college entrance exam cheating scheme, on four separate occasions, for their two daughters."

They also "conspired to bribe Gordon Ernst, the head tennis coach at Georgetown University, to designate their older daughter as a tennis recruit in order to facilitate her admission to Georgetown."

He was charged with "conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud," along with his wife, according to court documents.

Douglas Hodge, former CEO of Pimco

PIMCO

Douglas Hodge is the former CEO of asset manager Pimco. Hodge took the reins of the notable bond manager after Bill Gross, the onetime "Bond King," exited the firm in 2014. In December 2017, Hodge announced that he would retire from the firm.

During his 28 years with Pimco, Hodge grew the company's assets under management from $15 billion to $1.69 trillion. Afterwards, he joined Sway Ventures as a venture partner to help grow the firm's early-stage portfolio companies.

According to the court documents unsealed on March 12, Hodge "agreed to use bribery to facilitate the admission of two of his children to USC as purported athletic recruits, and sought to enlist CW-1 to secure the admission of a third child to college through bribery as well."

He was charged with "conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud.

Pimco declined to comment on the matter.

What Is Bachelorette Star Hannah Brown's Job? She's Way More Than Just Miss Alabama      Cache   Translate Page

After plenty of speculation from fans, ABC has announced that Hannah Brown is the next Bachelorette star. Hannah didn't get Colton's final rose, but she won audiences over with her Southern charm. So, what does Hannah do when she's not on camera in the Bachelor-verse? It turns out she works as an interior decorator.

Hannah's official Bachelor bio lists her job as being Miss Alabama USA 2018. And while she does hold that title proudly, it's far from being the only thing she's known for. According to her LinkedIn page, Hannah works as an interior decorator at a company called Gracefully Done in Northport, AL. (That puts her in good company with her Bachelor pal Demi, whose Bachelor bio lists her occupation as being an interior designer.)

Based on her LinkedIn page, it looks like Hannah takes her decorating work seriously. She includes photos of living rooms she's worked on to showcase her talent. And it looks like she's been with Gracefully Done since 2017, the year she graduated from The University of Alabama. Brown is even featured on Gracefully Done's website, so it seems her decorating work is integral to the team.

Aside from being an interior decorator, it looks like Hannah is a bit of a makeup buff, too. Her LinkedIn profile notes that she's been a "freelance makeup artist/hairstylist" since April 2016. Taking part in pageants definitely taught Hannah a thing or two about makeup, and it looks like she's using that to her advantage outside the competitions, too.

When she's not on The Bachelorette or competing in pageants, Hannah is also a mental health advocate. A 2018 article from Alabama NewsCenter explains that Hannah has "struggled with anxiety and depression," and she's now outspoken about mental health in order to help others. Hannah's compassion for others makes her a great choice for The Bachelorette, and it looks like this season will be plenty of fun with Hannah Beast at the helm.

After Upheaval, Alaska Names Acting CIO, Permanent CISO       Cache   Translate Page
Alaska's state capitol building

John Boucher is the third person to hold the title of chief information officer in Alaska — whether in an acting or permanent capacity — since December 2018, but he may hold the title for some time.

After months of apparent upheaval in the Alaska Office of Information Technology, Boucher confirmed for Government Technology last week that he has been acting CIO since Feb. 14, and the state has also named a new chief information security officer.

Boucher said he was not aware of any search for a permanent replacement for his position.

“I’m here as long as Commissioner (Kelly) Tshibaka would like me to serve in this capacity,” he said, referring to the head of the Alaska Department of Administration that supervises OIT. “If the path that she chooses to take is to openly compete it, I will put my hat in the ring.”

Boucher was also Alaska’s acting CIO for about three months toward the end of 2018, after Bill Vajda resigned in August.

A career economist with a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Notre Dame, Boucher has had roles in several Alaska state departments over the course of nearly 36 years in public service. According to his LinkedIn profile, he started with more than 17 years as an economic analyst for labor market statistics for the Alaska Department of Labor. For five years he was the project manager of an agency-wide information systems replacement and integration project, Online Resource for the Children of Alaska, for the state’s Office of Children’s Services; for nine years he was a senior analyst/legislative liaison for the state Office of Management and Budget; and for two years he was the deputy commissioner of the state Department of Administration. Boucher returned to the Office of Management and Budget in 2017, where he spent 18 months as a senior policy analyst, then moved to OIT in September 2018 as the state’s acting CIO in Vajda’s stead.

That’s where the recent shakeups started. In December 2018, without a formal announcement, newly elected Gov. Michael Dunleavy appointed a new CIO — Peter Zuyus, whose resume reflects a career at telecommunications companies around the country and ownership of a political consulting firm in Alaska, but who declined to answer calls and emails from the press. The office of the governor also declined to return calls requesting comment on Zuyus’ hire.

By mid-February, also without announcement or explanation, Zuyus was out. His contact information on the state website was temporarily replaced by that of Paula Vrana as acting CIO, who did not respond to a request for comment at the time.

Zuyus’ departure followed a series of leadership changes in the Department of Administration. The department’s head commissioner, Jonathan Quick, resigned Jan. 24 amid reports that he had lied on his resume. Vrana replaced Quick as acting commissioner for a week until Jan. 31, when Dunleavy chose a full-time replacement in Kelly Tshibaka, a former chief data officer for the U.S. Postal Service Office of the Inspector General and former counsel for the U.S. Department of Justice. Vrana then took over for Zuyus as acting CIO until Feb. 14, when Boucher stepped in.

Boucher declined to comment on Zuyus’ hire, departure or press shyness. A political blog, The Alaska Landmine, connected Zuyus’ departure in mid-February to missed payments on an $11.6 million contract for cybersecurity services awarded by the state in fall 2018 to California-based Evotek. Boucher would not comment on the Evotek contract, which The Alaska Landmine said has been terminated, or what the state is doing to meet cybersecurity needs for which state officials assigned more than $11 million last year.

“We’re trying to increase and harden our security profile within the resource constraints that we have,” he said. “Security is a priority for us, so we’re definitely trying to move forward to the best of our ability.”

Boucher also confirmed that Alaska has had a new chief information security officer, Mark Breunig, since January. According to his LinkedIn profile, Breunig has also been a project manager at Accenture, a senior manager of IT security at NANA Development Corporation, an IT manager for the municipality of Anchorage and the owner of his own IT security consulting business.

As someone who has had a hand in many state departments over three-plus decades, Boucher felt comfortable saying IT in Alaska, in general, is in a “challenged state.” More specifically he pointed to Administrative Order 284, an order from then-Gov. Bill Walker in April 2017 consolidating Alaska's IT assets to a standalone agency under the leadership of a state CIO. He said the state is working toward IT services and infrastructure being shared between all its departments, and that process is still ongoing.

“We’re attempting to execute a consolidation to a shared services model where it works and is appropriate, which many of the other states are going through some iteration of the same exercise,” he said. “Since the beginning of (AO 284), we’ve moved 140-some positions into the central IT organization from the agencies, the individual departments … We’ve used the phrase ‘commodity services,’ such as the delivery of endpoint support, data centers, that kind of stuff. Those are the first moves that we are making in terms of consolidation.”

Despite AO 284 and recent turnover in OIT, Boucher said he sees no significant difference between the structure of the department now and in 2018.

Talking to GT last week, he said he would be speaking to the state House finance subcommittee this week on IT projects or initiatives underway, but he declined to elaborate.

Alaska’s CIO under Walker’s administration, Bill Vajda, started a new job on March 4 as CIO of the U.S. Department of the Interior.

Macit Tuna of Dofo.com – Domain Info and Branding a Startup      Cache   Translate Page

Domain Shane Domain Shane: This is my first post on DSAD.com and I’m happy to be here.  It’s exciting to join a group of like minded individuals with diverse backgrounds, each contributing their own bit of uniqueness to the formula.  I think what you will continue to see developing here will be unlike anything previously seen in this space.  Now, on to the interview…

Macit Tuna is the Co-founder of dofo.com & dndisputes.com. Dofo.com collects information on domain names. Their engineers comb the Internet using unique algorithms they have developed and provide you with an overflow of data on more than 350 million domain names.  All in a truly clear way. Dofo.com saves you the time of sifting through multiple sources, and it’s free.

Mike: Tell us a little bit about Macit Tuna. What’s your background and how did you get into domaining?
Macit: I’m a computer scientist and did my master in cybersecurity. My brother Sacit and I have developed dozens of web projects through the years. We are interested in domain names since 2003. I was blogging about domain names between 2007 and 2013. I was also one of the organisers of Turkey’s first domain name events in 2012 and gave some courses about domain names and domain disputes in various universities. We founded Dofo in 2016, but the idea was in our minds for years.

Mike: Dofo.com claims to have a vast amount of information available. What types of information are we talking about and how is this helpful to the end user?
Macit: Our aim is to position Dofo.com as the starting point for people that are building new brands, projects and start-ups and for those looking to register or buy a domain name.
The most important feature of dofo.com is the powerful search. By entering a keyword, users are able to see whether any domain with that keyword is registered, get a list of registered domains containing the keyword and among them, see the ones that are on sale. There are tens of filters you can use to refine the domain names.
As for the domain pages, you can see almost all the information about any given domain name:
Registration info (registered or not)
Sale info (listed for sale or not, if so price, etc.)
Whois info
Website info (active website or not, Alexa info, etc.)
Domain info (language etc.)
Sale history
Dispute history
Whois history
Other extensions
Similar domain names
Another powerful feature of dofo.com is the “Trends.” You can see the registration trends of any keyword on the trends pages.
Our goal is to bring all domain name related information into one place and to present it as easy as possible for everybody, for free.

Mike: Can I buy new and aftermarket names on dofo.com?
Macit: Yes, absolutely. Thanks to our partnership with more than 20 marketplaces and registrars, we cover almost all of the domain name aftermarket on dofo.com.
If the domain name you are looking for is for sale in any marketplace, we direct you to this marketplace to buy the domain name. On dofo.com, we list almost 40 million domain names for sale.
If the domain name you are looking for is available (not taken) we are directing you to a registrar.
Moreover, if the domain name you want is taken and not for sale in any marketplace, we direct you to a domain name brokerage company such as Lumis and DomainAgents.

Mike: Are domainers and business people looking for domain names finding your service helpful? What type of feedback have you received?
Macit: Yes, we have been getting awesome comments from the domain name ecosystem, and that motivates us to make dofo.com better. These are some of the comments we’ve received until now:
Doron Vermaat (Co-founder of Efty.com): Excellent job. Nice to see some innovation in our space and fresh ideas being executed!
Reza Sardeha (Founder and CEO of Undeveloped.com): What I love about this product is the way they bring together data points in an elegant and simple UI.
Abdulbasit Makrani (Founder of Abdulbasit.com): I’m really impressed with your service.
Michael Sumner (CEO of Namebio.com): What you’re doing with Dofo, looks amazing!
Hobi Michalec (Co-founder of Lumis.com): I love the way you’ve designed the platform.
Darryl Lopes (Domain Name Broker): I have tried it, very interesting and useful site for looking up domain names.
Arif Şengören (Domain Name Broker, Uniregistry): Great product overall! It’ll be your number one tool. Congratulations!
Bora Öztunç: As an agency, this is a great tool for us. Today we searched various domains for our customers, matched domains for national and international registration searches, get directed to the source and purchased some of them.
We have been getting some other comment and feedback on Producthunt, Namepros and via social media & email.

Mike: What is your business model? Do you make an affiliate commission on sales through the partners you work with?
Macit: As you know dofo.com is completely free and will always be. We aim to democratize the way people access domain name data and let everyone discover the Internet freely.
Referral commission is one of our revenue models. We will also start to offer some advertisement/sponsorship opportunities to registrars and registries.

Mike: You recently recently released the latest version of dofo.com, what’s next?
Macit: These days we are testing some new features we have been developing for months such as semantic similarity (similar domain names based on meaning and context), powerful language detection and more.
“Domain follow” and search saving features are being tested for a while and will be fully functional soon. You can follow any domain name and will be notified as soon as an update occurs on this domain name such as whois change, sale info change (on sale, price change) and more.
We are also translating dofo.com UI for more than 30 languages because our goal is to democratize the way people access domain name data, in their own language.
We have a plan to launch Smart Name Generator for Startups as part of dofo.com.
We also want to more focus on Dofo Blog and share interesting articles about domain names and the Internet ecosystem for everyone. We already started to post articles on blog.dofo.com.
Dofo users share awesome feedback and feature requests with us. We are always open to hearing your ideas.

Mike: Lots of features to look forward to.  How did you choose the name dofo.com and why? Can you tell us the cost of the name?
Macit: We were calling it as “big-project-d” before naming it (d for domain name). After starting to develop it, we thought we are bringing all the information about any domain name into one place so the name should be something about domain + info.
(A slide from Dofo’s first presentation, at that time the name wasn’t decided yet.)

We generated and looked at dozens of domain names: domaininfo, domainfo, domain + (two letters), etc. Of course with .com :) As a domain name startup, you just cannot launch without a .com extension.
Then we decided to call it as dofo (domain info). The dofo.com domain name was owned by French domainer Francois Carrillo at that time, and interestingly enough he has used the domain name for a basic domain info service. We emailed him, negotiated and then bought the name. We spent more than $30,000 for the domain name. It was high for a non-funded startup, but we took this risk.

Mike: Great use of the name. Dofo.com is not your only project. Tell us about DNDisputes.com as well.
Macit: Dofo.com is our main project, it constitutes the basis for other projects of ours.
We launched DNDisputes.com in 2017 to help domain name professionals to search and analyze domain disputes. There are some other domain name related products we are working on especially for domain registrars and registries but dofo.com will always be our flagship product, and it will always be free.

Mike: Macit, thanks for your time and the insight on dofo.com.
Macit: Thank you, Mike, for this interview. It is a pleasure for me to talk to you. We are always open to hearing your readers’ ideas and comments. Find me on Linkedin and let’s keep in touch.

High-ranking schools such as Georgetown University, Stanford University, Yale University, the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Southern California, Wake Forest University, and the University of California, Los Angeles, also appeared in the indictment, court documents show.

Robert Flaxman cofounded the Costa Mesa, California-headquartered real-estate-development company Crown Realty and Development in 1994. The firm has been an active local developer in California, investing in a number of notable local projects, such as the retail center Venice Crossroads and a hotel, restaurant, office complex across from Angel Stadium of Anaheim.

Crown Realty and Development has a more than 2.3 million-square-foot portfolio that includes retail, hospitality, and industrial projects that spread across California, Arizona, Virginia, Idaho, and Northern California.

He is accused of participating in "both the college recruitment scheme and college entrance exam scheme." In the court records, he is also accused of fabricating information on his son's application to the University of San Diego.

He was charged with "conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud."

Manuel A. Henriquez, founder and chairman of Hercules Capital

Manuel A. Henriquez is the cofounder, chairman, and CEO of Hercules Technology Growth Capital, a Palo Alto, California-based venture-debt provider. The company was an early investor in Facebook.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Henriquez has worked in venture capital for more than 30 years. Before Hercules, he was a partner at the private-equity fund VantagePoint Venture Partners. He was also the founder of ON Technology, a software company that was backed by investors such as Kleiner Perkins, Apple Computer, and more.

He and his wife, Elizabeth Henriquez, are accused of participating "in the college entrance exam cheating scheme, on four separate occasions, for their two daughters."

They are also accused of conspiring "to bribe Gordon Ernst, the head tennis coach at Georgetown University, to designate their older daughter as a tennis recruit in order to facilitate her admission to Georgetown," according to court documents.

The couple are charged with "conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud," according to court documents.

Douglas Hodge, former CEO of Pimco

Douglas Hodge is the former CEO of the asset manager Pimco. Hodge took the reins of the notable bond manager after Bill Gross, the onetime "Bond King," exited the firm in 2014. In December 2017, Hodge announced that he would retire from the firm.

During his 28 years with Pimco, Hodge grew the assets the company managed from $15 billion to $1.69 trillion. Afterward, he joined Sway Ventures as a venture partner to help grow the firm's early-stage portfolio companies.

According to court documents unsealed on March 12, Hodge "agreed to use bribery to facilitate the admission of two of his children to USC as purported athletic recruits, and sought to enlist CW-1 to secure the admission of a third child to college through bribery as well."

He was charged with "conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud.

Pimco declined to comment on the matter.

Recruiters, you should be using social media to build your employer brand of choice!

Social is used incorrectly by many businesses and recruiters.Social is exactly that – a social platform where potential customers are interacting with friends, family and articles that are of interest to them. When you are posting social messages you are interrupting them so you need to be mindful of the context of your content and when it is being consumed by your audience.Yes, it is a candidate market and they have many options and choices with the average time in one role being about 2-3 years. So, building a relationship with them on social media is worth the time when you think of the lifetime value of those candidates. You must have a strong employer brand that is engaging, shares brand culture and is based on the emotion behind the decisions people are making when it comes to accepting a new role. Can you honestly say that you have a strong brand on social and digital channels? Do candidates know much about your company, why you are different and what perks you offer your staff?Savvy Recruiters go beyond posting job ads. Anyone can do that (and bore your candidates to death). Or you can choose to put some time, money and resources into building a brand that is visible, sought after and be first choice over your competitors.Consider these tactics if you really want to do it well:Have a clear strategy or plan – Make your prospective candidates feel they have a personal connection to your company and some people they can turn to for insights and opinion.Create a Brand Employee Ambassador Program – get your staff active on social media and encourage company-wide sharing of your marketing messages which will amplify your brand to a wider pool of people.Have a dedicated careers page separate from the main company page – As a recruitment team, you need accounts whose sole aim is to appeal to your target candidate audience.Run targeted campaigns to reach your desired candidate audience– consider doing targeted social media ads rather than just random job posts by creating marketing messages that are personal & relevant and reach qualified prospectsCross promote channels – and move people from your social to your owned channels to capture their information and data so you can continue to remarket to them. Drive them to your website, landing pages with free downloads, to sign up for webinars, get exclusive contentUse social channels in specific ways – All social channels don’t need to be used in the same way or have the same content. You might use Linkedin for clients, Facebook for internal and brand culture and Twitter for candidates. Think about where your audience is and use each channel accordinglyHaving effective social channels takes time. It does not happen overnight. Think smarter, think beyond what you have always done and consider how social media can support your existing marketing channels and processes to reach more qualified audiences. If you want to create a social program to build your employer brand, book a time to chat with me here: https://calendly.com/tanya-26You might also be interested in this article on building brand ambassadors from your employees.See More

The Interview Game - Part II      Cache   Translate Page
I am trying to digest my last interview. What I did right and wrong.
As the previous event, I had 4 technical interviews but different from previous event, interviewers asked more times about my experience. What am I doing? What was my last big decision? What is interesting in my current job? And so on. This is something that I didn’t like because I have been working here for only 3 months in my new job so it was not easy to talk about things that I am still learning.
  • My first interviewer gave me 2 questions…I spend a good time with a bad solution in my second problem and that was an easy question. In the end I gave a good answer but I had already involved.
Question 1: how to convert a file path (file path will always have root dir) to an canonical path. Ex: "/a/b/../c" $\Rightarrow$ "/a/c".
Question 2: how to implement a data structure for control use of limited resources of 3 kinds. (Ex: Lock SA is a company that provide lockers to users in airport. When a new customer arrive, he can ask to keep his/her baggage there or to get back his/her baggage. Describe a data structure to handle that problem).
  • Second interviewer also gave me 2 questions…In the middle of first question, the interviewer ask me about how many byte a certain object will use: geez! I said that it was 3 *32 bytes when I would/should like to answer 3*32 bits or 3*4 bytes. Second, I gave a bad code answer but I fix it as soon as it was pointed as wrong. The 2th question I failed to provide a right answer. The interviewer gave me some tips and I fixed the code again but I couldn’t finish the question at time.
Question 1: Let T a tree that holds arithmetic "operations" (ex: $+ \rightarrow
    5, + \rightarrow *, * \rightarrow 5, * \rightarrow 6$
). Let class Node with method eval(). (calling eval of previous root Node object should return 35). "Implement" this Arithmetic tree.
Question 2: Implement an algorithm that returns a subset of a collection that provide the maximum product of n elements.
  • The third interviewer asked me many questions about my current job, my function, etc. After that, he ask me to “describe” a solution for Stamp E-Bay version. It was so abstract that I didn’t get if my propose was good enough or not.
Question: Sketch a EBay Web site to sell/Buy Stamps.
  • The fourth interviewer was toughest but he was not the more challenging interviewer.
    • He asked about how long I had of experience and I said that was more than 8 years. He was not convinced because I have just finished graduation in 6 years. But this is a Brazilian reality.
    • He ask me about my Master’s Degree. I have closed my course although I was hoping finished that as soon as possible. Because I was Using Linkedin format, I provided a expecting conclusion year and the interviewer was no very happy with this expecting conclusion year since I had gave up of my Master’s.
    • Third, he asked me to implement an algorithm to verify if a digraph was an acyclic digraph…
My solution simply tested all possible paths from sources vertices to end vertices individually. I know that solution was terrible, but I was scratching the first solution that came in my mind. The new question was... how is the complexity for this algorithm?
In this point something sad happened. My answer was almost right. I said that should be something exponential like $O(\gamma^E)$ where $\gamma$ is average of outcome arcs, and E is number of arcs. But I was not convincing…
I was trying to prove it reflecting about worst case scenario. Now improving that...
    $\gamma$ = Average outcome arcs = arcs / vertices
    Let G a graph with vertices $(a_1, a_2, \ldots a_n, b_1, b_2, \ldots b_n)$ and the follow configuration...
    $(a_1 \rightarrow a_2, a_1 \rightarrow b_2, \ldots a_{n-1} \rightarrow a_n, a_{n-1} \rightarrow b_n)$
    $(b_1 \rightarrow a_2, b_1 \rightarrow b_2, \ldots b_{n-1} \rightarrow a_n, a_{n-1} \rightarrow b_n)$
The 2 ending vertices have no arcs. All others have 2 edges. So, all possible paths  = 2V − 2.In this case... edges, E = 2 * (V − 2). So, for this scenario the complexity will be O(2E).
What was I doing wrong? I am not getting how to calculate gamma. What should the worst gamma be for complexity considerations for this algorithm?
The right answer could consider how many arcs is possible from a digraph. And it should be V(V − 1) where V is number of vertices. But I knew that the algorithm find cycles. So, I was thinking that it should limit to a constant. But how many arcs could have the most complete acyclic digraph? At least (Sum of 1 .. n)/n. So gamma actually is proportional to number of vertices. The right answer is O(VE). I was wrong once again but in this time, the interviewer didn’t provide any tip.
The second point is ... oh, it is so obvious that I can find cycles removing layers of the graph from border (fringe) to the inner part. It should be O(V + A). =(
Question: Implement an algorithm to verify if a digraph is an acyclic digraph

Una empresa de marketing expone al público 809 millones de registros

https://www.muyseguridad.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/fuga_de_datos.jpg

Macit Tuna of Dofo.com – Domain Info and Branding a Startup      Cache   Translate Page

This is my first post on DSAD.com and I’m happy to be here.

(A slide from Dofo’s first presentation, at that time the name wasn’t decided yet.)

domain name

6 Steps To Improve An Internship      Cache   Translate Page
1)      LinkedIn is your best friend – use it! Don’t get me wrong, LinkedIn isn’t Facebook so don’t use it to have a moan about your morning commute; but don’t be afraid to reach out to those within your chosen field and make some useful connections, check GRB's Graduate Guide to LinkedIn. During and after your internship, make sure to connect not only with those within the company, but also your fellow interns as you may want to reach out to them further down the line. Building up a healthy bank of industry contacts will come in handy during the post-graduate job search and is also useful for tracking the career development of those you may wish to follow.   2)      No task is beneath you When I was asked to do the washing up after a meeting with clients, refusing was an idea that never crossed my mind as I respected my role as an intern and recognised that every task I could take on was a help to the team. Being an intern is not always glamorous and you may not get responsibilities from day one but showing enthusiasm and initiative towards the smallest of tasks will highlight you has a reliable and passionate team player. 3)      Show initiative You will have to find a balance between confidence and reservation, but it always pays to show you’ve gone the extra mile to pick up skills and even propose ideas. Whether this means taking notes, writing a journal that can be referred back to so you don’t have to ask for instructions again or even working through your lunch break to make sure every task is completed. 4)      Do your research Look online to source information about the environment you are about to enter. You may find information such as the expected dress code or even what tasks you may be asked to complete, but also research things such as the values and character traits the company looks for in potential employees. If you’re in doubt about anything, make sure to get in contact before you start and always remember to begin with an open mind and to form judgements based on your own experiences. 5)      Use the skills you already have Maybe you have an advanced knowledge of computing or a keen eye for design, so always voice these skills and offer to put them to use to help the team; the goal is to leave a lasting impression and companies will remember these individual traits. The best interns are the those able to progress from receiving instructions to completing tasks individually and to a high standard using initiative, skill and a passion. These personal skills (read more about Graduate Skills)  are the key to accessing this level of independent success. 6)      Remember those you’re working for have been in your position too – so ask questions! There is a vast bank of knowledge right at your fingertips so make sure to find out everything you can that will help you with your career as well as with university. Find out are what degrees your peers have, their experience of life after graduation (did they travel or study more/how long did it take to find the right job), what companies they’ve previously worked for and even secure some interview tips from the experts! The most important information to get is how you can develop as an individual so always ask for feedback when the internship is over.   If you enjoyed this blog, make sure you don't miss out on last weeks blog (International Women’s Day – Leading Women). Or if you're interested in reading more about Internships, read our blog Ultimate Guide to Surviving an Internship / Job in Germany.

The Importance of Using LinkedIn Pulse to Build Trust, Awareness and Influence      Cache   Translate Page
Regardless of the industry, content marketing has long since been touted as one of the key differentiators to a company's long-term success. After all, it's one thing to have a great product or offering, but it's another to have a great product or offering that is effectively packaged to the masses from a trusted company that seems to have everyone's attention. But when it comes to establishing credibility, generating positive hype and growing your brand and business, what is the name of the game? We place so much emphasis on content marketing — and rightfully so — but what style of content and what method of delivery will play the most integral role in getting a company from point A to point B? What will move the needle the most, and most effectively translate the value proposition of a company (and those who run it) to current and prospective customers? We also must consider the current economic climate, where consumer trust is notoriously hard to earn — and far too easy to lose. Media has become the least-trusted institution. But if content represents the conduit to which brands can connect with their audience, how can companies shift past media distrust to establish their brand or offering as a trusted source? It's within this discussion that we realize the importance of thought leadership. What exactly is a thought leader?
Bill would effectively abolish the death penalty in Oregon      Cache   Translate Page

Mar 8, 2019 Under House Bill 3268, aggravated murder would be limited to only crimes when two or more people are killed
in a terror attack. This shows the death chamber at the Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem. Photo by Beth

A bill filed Monday would allow the death penalty only in cases involving terrorism-related killings, effectively abolishing capital punishment in Oregon.

Currently, aggravated murder includes crimes such as killing a child under 12, killing more than one person, killing a police officer on duty or killing someone during a rape or robbery. Those crimes are eligible for the
death penalty.

Under House Bill 3268, aggravated murder would be limited to only crimes when two or more people are killed in a terror attack.

Crimes considered aggravated murder under current law would be classified as first-degree murder, which would carry a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Rep. Mitch Greenlick, D-Portland, is the bill’s chief sponsor; 10 lawmakers, including one Republican, Rep. Ronald Noble of McMinnville, have also signed onto the bill.

“I think generally people support doing away with the death penalty,” Greenlick said. “I know it’s problematically applied and it’s extraordinarily expensive.”

Mary Elledge, an Oregon City woman whose son, Rob, was murdered in 1986, said she opposes eliminating the death penalty even though executions are rare in Oregon. She said just the threat of the death penalty can be effective in murder cases. Elledge leads a local chapter of Parents of Murdered Children,
a nonprofit that does not take a position on the death penalty. She said her personal views do not reflect those of the organization.

“The death penalty is a great bargaining tool,” she said.

The bill represents the latest chapter of Oregon’s long and evolving stance on the death penalty. Oregonians voted to abolish capital punishment in 1914. It was reinstated by popular vote in 1920, then repealed again by voters in 1964. It was reinstated in 1978, knocked down in 1981 by the court only to be reinstated again in 1984.

In 2011, then-Gov. John Kitzhaber imposed a moratorium on the death penalty. He argued that the death penalty isn’t handed down fairly: Some inmates on death row have committed similar crimes as those who are serving life sentences. He said capital punishment should be replaced with a sentence of life without the possibility of parole.

In 2015, Gov. Kate Brown, who personally opposes the death penalty, extended the moratorium.

Oregon hasn’t executed anyone since 1997. In the past five decades, the state executed two men, both in the 1990s. Those men essentially had volunteered for the death penalty after waiving their rights to appeal before
their deaths.

There are currently 30 people on death row.

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, states continue to grapple with the fairness and cost of capital punishment, currently authorized in 31 states. Since 2009, a handful of states, including New Mexico, Illinois, Connecticut and Maryland, have abolished the death penalty through legislation and replaced it with life without parole.

The Nebraska Legislature also abolished capital punishment in 2015, but it was reinstated by a statewide vote in 2016. Courts in Delaware recently ruled that the state’s capital punishment law is unconstitutional.

A 2016 study funded by an anti-death penalty organization, the Oregon Justice Resource Center, concluded that the costs associated with the death penalty in Oregon are almost twice as much as those for life sentences.

Alice Lundell, a spokeswoman for the Justice Resource Center, said HB 3268 is a positive step but doesn’t go far enough. Her organization has advocated for a complete elimination of the death penalty and has urged Brown to commute the sentences of those on death row.

She said the bill doesn’t address the fundamental problems with capital punishment, such as its costs, high reversal rates and its uneven application among counties.

“But it’s still a good thing to limit it further,” Lundell said.

The Oregon District Attorneys Association issued a brief statement Monday saying the death penalty was created through a citizen initiative petition in 1983 and was adopted the following year.

“Any change should be done in a transparent manner and should be decided by the voters,” said Beth Heckert, organization president and Jackson County district attorney.

Government Officials, Doctors Among Ethiopian Crash Victims
The crash of an Ethiopian Airlines jetliner shortly after takeoff from Addis Ababa shattered families and communities

In this image taken from video, rescuers search through wreckage at the scene of an Ethiopian Airlines flight that crashed shortly after takeoff at Hejere near Bishoftu, or Debre Zeit, some 50 kilometers (31 miles) south of Addis Ababa, in Ethiopia Sunday, March 10, 2019. The Ethiopian Airlines flight crashed shortly after takeoff from Ethiopia's capital on Sunday morning, killing all 157 on board, authorities said, as grieving families rushed to airports in Addis Ababa and the destination, Nairobi. ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia

Three Austrian physicians. The co-founder of an international aid organization. A career ambassador. The wife and children of a Slovak legislator. A Nigerian-born Canadian college professor, author and satirist. They were all among the 157 people from 35 countries who died Sunday morning when an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 jetliner crashed shortly after takeoff from Addis Ababa en route to Nairobi, Kenya. Here are some of their stories.

———

Kenya: 32 victims

— Hussein Swaleh, the former secretary general of the Football Kenya Federation, was named as being among the dead by Sofapaka Football Club.

He was due to return home on the flight after working as the match commissioner in an African Champions League game in Egypt on Friday.

— Cedric Asiavugwa, a law student at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., was on his way to Nairobi after the death of his fiancee's mother, the university said in a statement.

Asiavugwa, who was in his third year at the law school, was born and raised in Mombasa, Kenya. Before he came to Georgetown, he worked with groups helping refugees in Zimbabwe, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, the university said.

At Georgetown, Asiavugwa studied international business and economic law.

The university said Asiavugwa's family and friends "remembered him as a kind, compassionate and gentle soul, known for his beautifully warm and infectious smile."

Canada: 18 victims

—Pius Adesanmi, a Nigerian professor with Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, was on his way to a meeting of the African Union's Economic, Social and Cultural Council in Nairobi, John O. Oba, Nigeria's representative to the panel, told The Associated Press.

The author of "Naija No Dey Carry Last," a collection of satirical essays, Adesanmi had degrees from Ilorin and Ibadan universities in Nigeria, and the University of British Columbia. He was director of Carleton's Institute of African Studies, according to the university's website. He was also a former assistant professor of comparative literature at Pennsylvania State University.

"Pius was a towering figure in African and post-colonial scholarship and his sudden loss is a tragedy," said Benoit-Antoine Bacon, Carleton's president and vice chancellor.

Adesanmi was the winner of the inaugural Penguin Prize for African non-fiction writing in 2010.

Mitchell Dick, a Carleton student who is finishing up a communications honors degree, said he took a first- and second-year African literature course with Adesanmi.

Adesanmi was "extremely nice and approachable," and stood out for his passion for the subject matter, Dick said.

—Mohamed Hassan Ali confirmed that he had lost his sister and niece.

Ali said his sister, Amina Ibrahim Odowaa, and her five-year-old daughter, Safiya, were on board the jet that went down six minutes after it took off from the Addis Ababa airport on the way to Nairobi, Kenya.

"(She was) a very nice person, very outgoing, very friendly. Had a lot of friends," he said of his sister, who lived in Edmonton and was travelling to Kenya to visit with relatives.

Amina Ibrahim Odowaa and her daughter Sofia Faisal Abdulkadir

The 33-year-old Edmonton woman and her five year-old daughter were travelling to Kenya to visit with relatives.

A family friend said Odowaa has lived in Edmonton since 2006.

— Derick Lwugi, an accountant with the City of Calgary, was also among the victims, his wife, Gladys Kivia, said. He leaves behind three children, aged 17, 19 and 20, Kivia said.

The couple had been in Calgary for 12 years, and Lwugi had been headed to Kenya to visit both of their parents.

—Paolo Dieci, one of the founders of the International Committee for the Development of Peoples, was among the dead, the group said on its website.

"The world of international cooperation has lost one of its most brilliant advocates and Italian civil society has lost a precious point of reference," wrote the group, which partners with UNICEF in northern Africa.

UNICEF Italia sent a tweet of condolences over Dieci's death, noting that CISP, the group's Italian acronym, was a partner in Kenya, Libya and Algeria.

—Sebastiano Tusa, the Sicilian regional assessor to the Italian Culture Ministry, was en route to Nairobi when the plane crashed, according to Sicilian regional President Nello Musemeci. In a statement reported by the ANSA news agency, Musemeci said he received confirmation from the foreign ministry, which confirmed the news to The Associated Press.

In a tweet, Italian Premier Giuseppe Conte said it was a day of pain for everyone. He said: "We are united with the relatives of the victims and offer them our heartfelt thoughts."

Tusa was also a noted underwater archaeologist.

—The World Food Program confirmed that two of the Italian victims worked for the Rome-based U.N. agency.

A WFP spokeswoman identified the victims as Virginia Chimenti and Maria Pilar Buzzetti.

—Three other Italians worked for the Bergamo-based humanitarian agency, Africa Tremila: Carlo Spini, his wife, Gabriella Viggiani and the treasurer, Matteo Ravasio.

A French Tunisian, Saafi, 38, was on an official mission representing the African Diaspora Youth Forum in Europe, the group announced on its Facebook page.

"Karim's smile, his charming and generous personality, eternal positivity, and his noble contribution to Youth employment, diaspora engagement and Africa's socio-economic development will never be forgotten," the post read. "Brother Karim, we'll keep you in our prayers."

Saafi left behind a fiancée.

UK: 7 victims

— Joanna Toole, a 36-year-old from Exmouth, Devon, was heading to Nairobi to attend the United Nations Environment Assembly when she was killed.

Father Adrian described her as a "very soft and loving" woman whose "work was not a job — it was her vocation".

"Everybody was very proud of her and the work she did. We're still in a state of shock. Joanna was genuinely one of those people who you never heard a bad word about," he told the DevonLive website.

He also said she used to keep homing pigeons and pet rats and travelled to the remote Faroe Islands to prevent whaling.

Manuel Barange, the director of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations fisheries and aquaculture department, tweeted saying he was "profoundly sad and lost for words" over the death of the "wonderful human being".

— Joseph Waithaka, a 55-year-old who lived in Hull for a decade before moving back to his native Kenya, also died in the crash, his son told the Hull Daily Mail.

Ben Kuria, who lives in London, said his father had worked for the Probation Service, adding: "He helped so many people in Hull who had found themselves on the wrong side of the law."

Una empresa de marketing expone al público 809 millones de registros      Cache   Translate Page
Una empresa de marketing expone al público 809 millones de registros

https://www.muyseguridad.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/fuga_de_datos.jpg

Last year the Recommended Agency Register (RAR) was rebranded as The Drum Recommends to bring it in line with owner The Drum. It remains committed to partnering brands with the correct agency using data and unique industry expertise.

Our challenge was to take Origin Workspace off the page of the brand guidelines and bring the concept to life with a PR led marketing communications strategy.

This kick started with research and positioning work to identify the key selling points and competitive differences of Origin Workspace and develop a robust set of messages that all marketing communication and PR activity would underscore.

AMBITIOUS also identified that the sheer scale of Origin Workspace in a prominent part of the city effectively created a third business hub and closed the gap between Filton and Temple Quarter.

Activity to date has included:

Media relations: Build a news pipeline for Origin Workspace including announcing the concept, announcing the startup concept, announcing first members and profile raising for the leadership. Identifying feature angles and developing pitch points.

Social Media: AMBITIOUS wrote social media guidelines, created a visual social identity for Origin Workspace and kickstarted each channel with community building. We also used social to support event marketing including organic and paid activity. This brief also included support for the personal brand of core people within the business.

Sponsorship: Identifying relevant sponsorship vehicles in the city, building activity around them and amplifying the relationship to tap into core audiences Including Social Media Week Bristol.

Content Marketing: Content led strategy to meet a number of objectives including building domain authority of new website, boosting organic visibility of key search phrases, providing social content and using content marketing to underpin Origin Workspace’s presence in the city.

Influencer Marketing: Identifying core influencers, networks and groups to bring into the space to host events or have site tours. To date this has included Enterprise Nation, LinkedIn Local, Innovation lead at Bristol University, Business West and Bristol Media.

PR Counsel: Regular counsel and support for business challenges faced by Origin Workspace.
