We had an appointment this morning and it went great! We woke up early and did all of our breathing treatments, and right before they ended, we signed onto our web portal so that our respiratory therapist could watch how we do them and review settings on the vest. We both took some notes. We discussed using a new device called an Aerobika, something that he can breath into that will give positive pressure and vibration so loosen secretions which he can then expel. She shares a link for us to check out another kid using it on YouTube and tells us she will send one out with home care later this afternoon.

Between the RT and the doctor, our nurse gets online to review our current meds with us. She's sent me a message through our shared portal last week and asked me to review, marking the medications that we are or are not taking, and I'm able to do it one evening after I get the kids to bed. She simply confirms that nothing has changed before we move on. She asks what we need from them - refills, doctors notes, referrals - and agrees to email us the forms I had sent for school next year, and then steps away to grab the doctor.

The doctor pops on to review labs that we had done at the outpatient clinic one evening last week and is pleased that everything looks great. We've been practicing our PFTs with our home spirometer and, while our number is down slightly, we agree that since everything else is going so well that we should just stop by the clinic sometime this coming week to repeat it in the PFT lab to make sure there isn't something going on that needs treating. His weight looks great, something she's been following through our shared tracking portal, and neither of us feels the need to meet with the dietician this visit. We had discussed this prior to our visit in our pre-visit plan, but she confirmed that he was in good standing all around and agreed it wasn't necessary to spend time meeting with anyone else. As she is talking, we both have the opportunity to create a shared note - her turning my narrative into data and me reacting her thoughts and turning her suggestions into action items in my own words. She notices that my interpretation of what she had said earlier wasn't what she had meant, and we quickly discuss before we both feel confident in our next step. She asks about our summer plans and what refills we might need, and then puts us on a brief hold while transferring us to the Infectious Disease doctor whose following us because of Drew's achromobacter.

After just a few minutes on hold, the ID doc gets on the line with his nurse and we talk about next steps for treating his achromobacter and candida, a fungus that grew on his last culture. We have culture swabs at home that we use every few months and mail them into the lab so that we have results to discuss during our visit. This is so much better than the old way when there would be an anxiety filled week waiting for a lab result to pop up in MyChart, not knowing what it would say or how it would or wouldn't change our life. We know what he's got going on down there, and talk about plans for treatment. He mentions a study currently underway for CF kids looking at the variety of bacteria families found within one persons airway to determine if folks are acquiring one strain of a bacteria or multiple, and has found that in the 80ish folks they've tested, not only do they only have one strain, but they're all unique, suggesting that the infection control protocols they've put in place have all but eliminated the passing of bacteria from person to person in clinic. This is good news for a germophobe to hear! He offers to take a look at the specific strains of achromobacter that Drew has to determine how they act and react to different medications, and naturally I take him up on the offer. The notes I'm taking that he can see are reminders for myself to discuss with my husband when we he gets home this evening.

Before we get off the call, the nurse who had joined the ID doc offers to help us arrange our next appointment, suggesting that it may be difficult to find a time that works with everyone schedules. She shares her screen while I look through my calendar and we are able to find something that works.

Before we hang up, we are scheduled for our next follow up, this one will be in person as we alternate between e-visits and visits to the hospital to minimize the interruption that CF has in our lives and also the risk to catching something while we are there. We can both download a copy of note we have co-created. The appointment is over within 45 minutes, taking approximately 2-3 hours off the time of a normal visit. Drew is excited to have seen the faces of the folks who normally take care of them, as over video conference they don't need to gown, glove and mask. Its funny how a little face time, even virtually, can create that kind of connection.

None of this really happened. But what if? What if I didn't have to find a babysitter for the other kids during Drew's appointments, paying them for 4 hours while I sit in clinic with Drew who would rather be at home. What if I didn't have to bribe him with treats for not touching the elevator buttons in the hospital. What if I could get labs done in the evening rather than between 9-4, and what if I could talk with my doctor about the result the same day that the results come in, eliminating much of the worry and fear that comes simply with waiting. What if I had the chance to modify his med list, telling them what we take, and ensuring its correctness in his medical record, in real time. What if I could really create a note with his doctor, google docs style - me typing in blue and her in red, the respiratory therapist in orange and the dietician in green and the infectious disease doc in purple, true and total transparency - and what if that enhanced understanding between us, me more clearly understanding her recommendations, and her having a glimpse into my thoughts and feelings, practical and emotional, eliminating errors and misunderstandings, creating an action plan that we both feel confident that we can follow. What if I could look at a calendar online at a time that's convenient for me, selecting who I want to see and when, simultaneously checking my calendar to find a time that works for us and never having to wait on hold while a scheduler tries to solve this for me between the hours of 9-4pm.

What really happened during our appointment last week was captured in the previous post, but if I had it my way, this would be my ideal.

Creating a Usable Backup Setup for Linux (ElementaryOS 5)

Creating a backup solution is something most of us don't think about until we need it.

This is a guide that is meant to be a step by step solution to that problem before it happens.

Note: This is made for elementaryOS, but should work on any Debian based Linux distro, however YMMV if you are using something else.

Step 1: Backup Media Device

Before we even begin with some backup software, we need to have something to back it up to. This can be a network location like a samba share, a secondary disk in the system itself, or a removable disk like an external hard drive.

In my case, I'm using a 4Tb Western Digital Passport drive.

Step 2: Install The Software

There are a ton of backup solutions in terms of software for Linux, most being based on either rsync, or duplicity. For this guide, we are going to be using a tool called Déjà Dup Backup Tool. It's based on duplicity, which means we can back up to any kind of file store (even NTFS) and retain permissions, take snapshot backups, and keep file history, which is a very good thing for us. In my case, it allows me to make backups from both my windows install, and Linux install to the save drive, without needing different partitions. An honorable mention goes to Timeshift, which I would have used if it provided any kind of support for NTFS drives

Getting this installed in Elementary is straight forward. First, we need to open up the AppCenter, either by finding it on the dock, or by going to the applications tab and typing in the name.

Once we've got that open, we are going to type in Backup in the search bar in the top right of the AppCenter. This will provide a list of many, many apps, most of which are "Non-Curated". Déjà Dup falls into this category as well, and for me was the 5th listing from the top.

After locating the listing, click on the Free button on the far right, this will prompt you for your administrator (sudo) credentials to install the software. Enter them and hit Authenticate.

You you will be shown a progress bar for downloading, and then installing. Once the install is complete, you can close the AppCenter.

Step 3: Configuring Backup

Now that we have our backup tool installed, we need to open it. Click the Applications menu button in the top left, and look for Backups or type it in to search.

We are greeted by an interface that has only two visible buttons, and several menu items. The buttons, Restore... and Back Up Now... provide quick ways to get started.

Before we click through one of these, let's check our our menu items:

  • Overview - where we are now
  • Folders to save - The things we want backed up, by default, this only backs up your home folder.
  • Folders to ignore - Things you don't want included in your backup.
  • Storage location - Where your backups will live.
  • Scheduling - How often you want the system to backup

3.1: Scheduling

Let's start with that last menu item, and work our way up. First, turn Automatic backup on. Now, how often we want this to run can vary.

This will depend on your needs, and available storage. If you have more storage you may be able to do daily backups and keep them forever, or if you have much less you may only do weekly, and only keep a few

A lot of this depends on what you feel is appropriate for your data. How often do you change files on your computer? Is that data saved somewhere else like google docs or GitHub?

Personally, most of the work I do in Linux is code, and I use git for that. However, I do still have a lot of personalization that would take a lot of effort to get back, so for me, I'm going to set mine to backup every Week and keep for At least six months. This gives me a reasonable amount of data, without going too far for what I do. Remember that this software uses snapshot backups, so they won't take as much storage as you probably think.

3.2: Storage Location

A cool feature of Déjà Dup is that you can backup to a cloud account (Google Drive or Next cloud) if you desire. I'm just going to do a local backup, but feel free to use one of those options if you want. Keep in mind that backups to a remote server will probably be much slower.

At this point of Déjà Dup we have two options, Storage location and Folder. You should adjust at least your storage location to point to your external drive.

In my case the Storage location is set to my Passport external drive, and folder is just my computer name, nathan-Z170XP-SLI. You can change that folder name to whatever you want.

3.3: Folders to ignore

This menu is slightly deceiving. Anyone who has dealt with Linux backups before will know there are some system folders you should definitely ignore if you want a system backup to be successful. Fortunately, Déjà Dup provides are larger list, that is always ignored. You can view this list by clicking the top right icon, selecting help, and browsing to Settings. The help guide is generally useful and well written, I would recommend it if you have any other questions.

I'm going to add one additional entry by hitting the plus, /media, as I'm going to include my entire system, and I don't want to backup the drive I'm backing up to.

3.4: Folders to save

By default, Déjà Dup only backs up your home directory. I want more than this included in my backup, so I'm going to hit the plus icon near the bottom of the interface, and add an entry for root /.

This is going to tell it to backup everything - excluding the folders on the ignore list - on the system, so you may not want to set a backup to this level.

3.5: Backup.

Clicking back to the Overview section, we can now run our backup. Click Back Up Now..., you will be informed that the system requires duplicity with an option to install it in the top right, click Install. Just like before you will be prompted for your administrator credentials, and be greeted by a progress bar.

Once this install finishes you will be asked if you want to require a password for your backup. Depending on the nature of your work, and your tendency to remember or forget passwords, I would recommend password protecting this. If you don't use a password manager, you should start. However, if you don't feel you either need, or would remember a password, then select Allow restoring without a password.

In my case, I gave a password. Once you have an option selected, and a password given, the Forward button becomes active, click it.

This will start the backup itself. Depending on how much data you have, and which storage location you selected, this will take a long time.

You can expand the details if you want to view exactly what it is doing.

Step 4: Testing The Restore

Do not test this on the original source drive

This may not be a practical use for everyone, as not everyone has extra drives laying around to try a backup with. If at all possible you should try restoring the system with your backup to know that it works. This particular solution requires you install an operating system first, and then restore your backup. From there you can choose a full system restore, or cherry pick individual files to restore instead.

Please, try it. Not only does this give you experience with using the restore function so you know how should the time actually arise when you need to. It will let you walk through any issues you encounter knowing your data is actually still safe on the original drive. This let's you create an action plan - even if it's just in a google keep note, or dropbox - for when you need to do a real restore, and can help reduce stress significantly during that time.

Conclusion

We've made it, and you can now sleep a little easier knowing if your hard drive (or ssd) decides not to wake up tomorrow, you have a place to rescue your data from.

          What is happening today with speech recognition?      Cache   Translate Page      

Over the past few years, speech recognition software has moved from obscurity to the main stage. We are almost saturated with automatic answering software when we call larger businesses and speech recognition on smartphones has also become ubiquitous. But is this a serious advance or merely a novelty? Can you use speech recognition to do real work or only for casual and somewhat quirky communication?

I have been assessing the capabilities of speech recognition for many years and have been writing about my experiences off and on during that time period. Maybe a little history might help in giving some perspective.

Speech recognition has been under development for many years. You might recall HAL 9000 the computer in the 1968 film 2001, A Space Odyssey. Here we are about forty years later and a long time past 2001 and the capabilities of the HAL 9000 still seem like science fiction. Development of speech recognition software began long before 1968. The first speech recognition software/hardware combination was developed by Bell Laboratories in 1952 and could recognize numbers (digits) spoken by one voice. In 1962, ten years later, IBM demonstrated its Shoebox machine at the Worlds Fair in Seattle. I saw that demonstration and this jump started my interest in speech recognition software. The Shoebox system recognized 16 spoken words and the digits 0 through 9.

By the 1970s, speech recognition had advanced with the Department of Defense's DARPA Speech Understanding Research from 1971 to 1976. The program's system was called "Harpy" and could understand about 1011 words. Progress in speech recognition was incremental. I was aware of Apple's limited integration of speech recognition in 1993 and about that time in 1990 Dragon Dictate was launched by Dragon. My introduction to this product probably occurred with Dragon Dictate for Mac. The implementation of editing commands changed the products from limited use novelties into useful product.

However, my full use of speech recognition developed slowly over time. By the way, see if you can tell when I switched from manual typing to speech recognition in this post. However, in October of 2018, Nuance, the present developer of Dragon Naturally Speaking software announced that it was discontinuing support of Apple products.

The key factor in using speech recognition for day to day document production is the software's ability to edit. Even the most advanced software I have ever used is still cranky. Smartphone-based systems are little more than toys. Using voice to write text messages is always a source of amusement. Good voice recognition requires a very quiet environment and a speech pattern that clearly articulates each word. Granted, the entire idea of using speech recognition has moved to the mainstream of our computer usage but the advances in technology are still only partially implemented. The discontinuance of Dragon Dictate for the Mac is a serious setback.

Both Microsoft and Apple have speech recognition software as part of their operating systems. Each time there is a system upgrade I try to use the latest speech recognition software from Apple and from Microsoft and still find them both virtually lacking in editing ability. For the time being, I will continue to use Dragon Dictate until it becomes inoperable because of operating system changes. Hopefully, during the time while the program still operates other systems will be developed for Apple will improve its basic speech recognition program to implement adequate editing tools.

If you are using a Windows operating system, the best program is still Dragon NaturallySpeaking. Unfortunately, some new speech recognition programs are being implemented as subscription services with payment by the word or for time spent in dictation. Right now, it looks like Google Voice Typing is a good alternative with the limitation that it only works with Google Docs and the Chrome browser.
