15: 17 Tren a París

Yemen Humanitarian Update Covering 1 - 13 December 2018 | Issue 34      Cache   Translate Page
Key Issues Recent IPC analysis indicates that over 20 million face severe food insecurity in Yemen. The upsurge in Yemen’s migrant arrivals exceeds 2018 arrivals to Europe via the Mediterranean Seaw. Polio campaign reaches 4.6 million children, 84 per cent of target. The trend of suspected cholera cases remains stable. UN URGES ACTION TO AVERT HUMANITARIAN CATASTROPHE IN YEMEN On 7 December, the preliminary results of the Integrated Phase Classification (IPC) Food Security Analysis were released, indicating that without humanitarian food assistance over 20 million people in Yemen, representing two thirds of the population, would face severe food insecurity (IPC Phase 3+, that is people in crisis and above on the IPC five phase scale). Alarmingly, for the first time during the conflict in Yemen IPC Phase 5 (people in catastrophe) is observed, meaning that 63,500 people currently in this phase and are barely surviving. However, without large-scale food assistance, the number would be 238 000, three times higher. Only one other country in the world - South Sudan - has people suffering catastrophic food insecurity and even then, the number of people at Phase 5, at 47,000, is much smaller. Overall, 17 per cent of the Yemeni population (about 5 million people) are in IPC Phase 4 (Emergency) and 36 per cent (about 10.8 million people) are in IPC Phase 3 (Crisis). Ongoing hostilities remain the main driver of worsening food security, IDPs and those hosting them are the most vulnerable. The people most at risk of starvation are in Hajjah, Al Hudaydah, Sa’ada ad Taizz governorates. The economic crisis and resulting high food prices, disrupted livelihoods and high levels of unemployment also affects those not in conflict areas - the cost of the minimum/survival food basket is 150 per cent higher than before the conflict. As a result, large numbers of households in most districts across the country are forced to engage in negative coping strategies, including reducing the number of meals or size of food portions, consuming less preferred foods and prioritizing children’s consumption. In addition, households have also resorted to practices that will undermine their longer-term food security, such as selling animals and household items. In response to the situation, WFP is scaling up its food aid operation to target 12 million people per month with food and nutrition assistance next year, up 50 per cent from the 8 million targeted every month this year. The 12 million figure represents 10 million people severely food insecure and 2 million displaced people in acute need. Food aid alone will not be sufficient to end hunger. To do this, much more is needed. The five priorities to prevent more people sliding into IPC Phase 5 and possible famine are: Stop attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure; Allow all imports of food, fuel and medicine; Provide more foreign exchange and pay civil servants; Support the scale up of the humanitarian response; and Support the UN Special Envoy’s efforts to end the conflict.           U.S. Army captain, brothers, a law student, international aid workers among the 157 killed in an Ethiopian Airlines crash      Cache   Translate Page

Katelyn Parra Photography(NEW YORK) --  Making the world a "better place" was how heartbroken family members remembers loved once who were among the 157 people aboard the Ethiopian Airlines flight that crashed just minutes after takeoff on Sunday morning.

No one survived the horrific crash that claimed the lives of a decorated U.S. Army captain, brothers on vacation, a law school student and dozens of international aid workers.

Thirty-five countries from all over the world lost citizens in the deadly incident — 32 Kenyans were the majority of lives lost.

At least eight U.S. citizens were among the victims. The U.S. Embassy in Ethiopia and the U.S. Department of State haven't released their identities, but ABC News has confirmed the names of four.

Antoine Lewis, 39, of Matteson, Illinois, was a U.S. Army captain stationed in Ottawa, Canada, who served in Afghanistan. He was on vacation in Ethiopia doing Christian missionary work, according to his parents. They said Lewis equally valued the country he fought for and the home of his ancestors.

"That’s what he died doing," his mother, Antoinette Lewis, told ABC Chicago station WLS-TV in a recent interview. "His passion was just to make a better world, make a better place, both here and our mother country."

Lewis leaves behind a wife and a 15-year-old son.

"I’m still in disbelief," his wife said in a statement obtained by ABC News. "I feel it's a dream [I'm still] awaiting his call to tell me he has safely touched down."

"Antoine was so loving," she added. "He was always interested in learning new things, forever on a journey becoming a better version of himself each day. He was so smart and just wanted to share his wealth of knowledge with those who’d listen."

Ike and Susan Riffel of Redding, California, lost their only children in the crash, Bennett and Melvin Riffel. The brothers were on vacation traveling to a few different countries as part of an adventure ahead of the birth of Melvin's first child, according to the family.

Melvin and his wife, Britney, were expecting a baby girl in May.

"We appreciate the outpouring of love and support from the community," a spokesperson for the Riffel family told ABC Redding affiliate KRCR in a statement. "We ask for continued prayers."

IQAir, a Switzerland-based company that specializes in improving indoor air quality, confirmed that one of its employees, Matt Vecere, was aboard the doomed flight. Vecere grew up in Sea Isle City, New Jersey, and later moved to California.

"Matt was an amazing writer, an avid surfer, and a truly selfless person," IQAir said in a statement. "He was most at home helping others, as evidenced by his dedication to the people of Haiti following the devastating earthquake in 2010."

"We will miss his laugh, his wit, his sense of humor, but most of all, the kinship and friendship that he brought to everything he did," the company added.

Ethiopian Airlines identified the pilot of the ill-fated plane as Yared Mulugeta Gatechew, who had more than 8,000 flight hours. The co-pilot was Ahmed Nur Mohammod Nur, who had over 200 flight hours.

The United Nations said at least 21 of its employees were among those killed in Sunday's crash.

The staffers hailed from around the globe and worked for various U.N. agencies, which regularly made trips to Kenya by way of Ethiopia to visit Africa's United Nations Office headquarters, located in Nairobi. Many were traveling to attend a five-day assembly of the United Nations Environment Programme.

The World Food Programme (WFP), the food-assistance branch of the United Nations, released the names of seven team members who died: Ekta Adhikari, 26, of Nepa; Maria Pilar Buzzetti, 30, of Italy; Virginia Chimenti, 26, of Italy; Harina Hafitz, 59, of Indonesia; Zhen-Zhen Huang, 46, of China; Michael Ryan, 39, of Ireland; and Djordje Vdovic, 53, of Serbia.

"As we mourn, let us reflect that each of these WFP colleagues were willing to travel and work far from their homes and loved ones to help make the world a better place to live," the WFP's Executive Director David Beasley said in a statement. "That was their calling, as it is for the rest of the WFP family."

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees named three colleagues who also died: Nadia Ali, 40, of Sudan; Jessica Hyba, 43, of Canada; and Jackson Musoni, 31, of Rwanda.

"We’ve been struck by sudden and terrible loss," U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, said in a statement. "We are doing everything we can to help Nadia’s, Jessica’s and Jackson’s families at this most difficult and painful time."

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) said it lost a program officer in the gender and safeguards unit, Victor Shangai Tsang, of Hong Kong, China.

"Victor took up this position with vigor and enthusiasm, striving to make our projects fully gender-sensitive," UNEP said in a statement. "His work defined him as an individual, and he, in turn, helped define our own work."

Victor leaves behind his pregnant wife and son.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations confirmed it lost fisheries officer Joanna Toole, who was "passionate about making the world a better place."

Another victim in Sunday's plane crash was Max Thabiso Edkins, a 35-year-old dual-national of Germany and South Africa. He worked as a communications officer for the World Bank's Connect4Climate program.

"We were devastated to learn that we lost a cherished colleague in the plane crash in Ethiopia," the World Bank Group's interim president, Kristalina Georgieva, said in a statement. "Max was deeply committed to the fight against climate change and brought tremendous creativity, energy and passion to his work. Our deepest sympathies go to his family and loved ones, and to those of the other victims of this tragedy."

Cedric Asiavugwa, a third-year law student at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C, was traveling to his native Kenya to attend the funeral of his fiance's mother, according to a press release from the school.

Born and raised in Mombasa, Kenya, Asiavugwa's work on social justice issues led him from his native country to Uganda, Tanzania and Zimbabwe, before coming to Georgetown University Law Center. The 32-year-old planned to return home to Kenya after graduating to continue serving refugees and other marginalized groups.

"With his passing, the Georgetown family has lost a stellar student, a great friend to many, and a dedicated champion for social justice across East Africa and the world," the law school said in a statement.

Arabs-Muslims or White Europeans .. who are really racist ?!      Cache   Translate Page

In April 2014, The British newspaper ‘The Independent’ have reported that Saudi Arabia has criticised Norway's human rights record during the United Nations' Universal Periodic Review, in which 14 States are scheduled to have their human rights records examined. Russia meanwhile called for Norway to clamp down on expressions of religious intolerance and and criticised the country’s child welfare system.

The Norwegian foreign minister commented on this criticism saying “It is a paradox that countries which do not support fundamental human rights have influence on the council, but that is the United Nations,”

Months later, The Egyptian government took an advantage of the civilians killing incidents which some American police officers was involved in to direct a sharp criticism toward what they consider as a clear human rights violations on the American soils. Meanwhile, the Egyptian police wrote on their Facebook official page giving a “tips” to the american police officers about how to handle the peaceful demonstrations without causing human lives loses, the thing which made some activists making fun of the Egyptian government’s contradictory behavior, as it have a bad reputation concerning human rights and that the police and army have killed hundreds of protesters and detainees as a result of an excessive use of violence and physical torture in the past few years !!

I always memorize this incidents and other similar situations when some Arabs and Muslims start accusing the west of practicing racism and discrimination against immigrants, because many of those who take the lead in this criticism do not care at all about discrimination, racism and all kinds of human rights violations, and some of them practice such violations and praising it without shaking single eyelid. but they forget about that and direct those accusations toward the west with what they are themselves doing as they are trying to throw dust in eyes..
The western world are always chased by its colonial history which was marred by an explicit racism practices and violations of human dignity in the countries which were occupied during the past centuries. and despite the fact that all of those crimes and violations became part of a history irrelevant to our current reality, and despite the fact that such practices were condemned, regretted and apologized for by the past colonizing countries, however, some young Europeans who had no connection at all with such violations away from that they read and heard about it inherited a guilt feeling from their ancestors; a feeling which being fed by the increase of the immigration from the post colonized countries to Europe, where some Europeans feel guilt combined with a moral responsibility for any actual or possible sufferings might those immigrants go through, and they got a painful feeling that those inherited guilt is impossible to be erased or forgotten. Their daily life and their dealings with others is a personification of this inherited guilt. I met with many of them whose sensitivity toward racism and discrimination touch even some things might not be noticeable by those who is most likely targeted with discrimination and racism!!

Last December, I went with a friend of mine who is french living in Berlin to watch “The magic flute” opera in Berlin opera house. That was my first time i watch this show in theater after i watched it many times on screens. The show started and ten minutes passed before my friend started expressing intense anger and resentment over the appearance of an actor on the stage with a face painted in black as he played one of the opera’s roles. My friend told me that he is not able to continue the show and that he will wait for me outside.

On our way back my friend start explaining to me why he was angry. he said that he can’t accept when a white actors painting their faces in black to characterize black people and he consider it racist and humiliating. He also claimed that the opera houses don’t accept black people to act on the stage. I asked him if he would feel better if this role was played by a real black man? He silenced a bit and he was apparently thinking before he answered refusing playing such role at all and saying that the text characterizing the black people with a stereotypical brutal and bloody roles and that's why he is opposing playing this role basically which means in his opinion that the opera houses should stop showing such classic works to avoid promoting racism or they can modify the script and cleaning it from all suspected racism that included.

This friend was not the only one who adopt such position, but some Europeans i know do not care much about some brutal violations against human rights practiced in the middle east and Africa and have something to do with traditions or religion as they care about an opera show, movie or a piece of literature contained a suspected racism, and sometimes they blame their own people accusing them with that they helped on the occurrence of such violations because that the colonization prevented those who is committing such violations from getting rid of such traditions and thoughts that justify it.

I don’t underestimate here any racist or discriminatory attitude no matter how small, and i think that all racism suspicions should be addressed and opposed before it grows up and become an acceptable reality and prevalent habits as its in the middle east. and i also believe that we shouldn’t tolerate or underestimate any kind of violation against human rights no matter how small it is and wherever it happened and i think that all of those things should be confronted strongly and firmly to guarantee that it will not be repeated in the future. and i also urge everybody who have been through a situation where his rights were violated and/or he have been discriminated against to stand strongly against it and not keep silent, and also those who witness such situations to take a strong actions against it who knows they might became a victims of similar situations one day.
Here comes an Important question about whether those who practice racism, discrimination and violations against human rights without shaking an eyelid are also entitled to accuse others of what they do ?! and if those accusations was based on a real grounds should we take it in consideration and react toward it seriously ?! should we react or give attention toward an allegation made by a terrorist who is for example supporting IS or Al-Qaeda and/or fought under their flags, brutally tortured and beheaded people, that he has been subjected to a violation of his human rights in jail, like if he was not allowed to leave his cell or to meet with his family or talking to them in phone or if he claimed that the police practiced racism and discrimination against him?!

As a result of a long bloody colonial history, the term “white man” has been associated with racism and brutality, even after those practices turned into just a words in books and exhibits in museums, the great grandparent’s shame is still chasing their descendants who are mostly abandoned this colonial patriarchal racist legacy and distanced themselves from it.
Ironically, Those who are supposed to be a historical victims for the white man’s brutal activities and now they are accusing Europeans all the time with racism, discrimination and violating the basic human rights in every occasion are not hesitating at the mean time of practicing racism and discrimination without fearing of being accused of it. It seems like racism and discrimination became an exclusive accusations goes only for the white people, while any other people no matter how cruel and barbaric their crimes and atrocities is, they have an eternal impunity protecting them from such accusations just because they used to be a spoiled historical victim for the white man who hold the eternal shame which he inherited to his grandsons and their offspring !!

After i moved to Norway as a political refugee, I started attending some lessons at Nygård skole organized by the Introduction center for refugees in Bergen as part of The Introduction program for refugees. One of those lessons was called in Norwegian “Tema måte” where there was a Norwegian person from an Iraqi origins leading it, talking in Norwegian while several translators sitting in the room and telling us what he say in our languages. Different topics was opened for discussion in this meeting which was held every Tuesday, and in the first meeting he talked to us about racism saying its widely scattered in Norway and the right wing had stopped organizing demonstration against immigration policies but he believe that they work now underground aiming to expel all the immigrants who came originally from Africa and middle east outside Norway and that we should stick to being part of this society and that he personally does not talk about his ethnic origin as he insists on being just Norwegian to stop anyone who dare to question his belonging to Norway. Then he opened a discussion with us about the manifestations of racism which probably encountered the people who are attending this meeting. Those manifestations according to what the students who was attending this class said was ranged between an uncomfortable eye contact with a person passing by in the street and reach its maximum with a Yemeni guy he said that he felt uncomfortable because he believe that Norwegians avoid sitting next to him in the bus marking that as its a clear racism and discriminatory attitude. The teacher reacted to what students told agreeing on that its a clear signs of the presence of blatant racism and discrimination against immigrants in the Norwegian society!!!
But this teacher who was showing us his concern towards what he sees as growing phenomena of racism and discrimination as he felt it in the Norwegian society and his fear of the rise of the far right wing, did not hesitate during another lesson to warn us of thinking of marrying Norwegian women , why ?!! because they are in his own words “ Very expensive” and “ cost a lot of money” . In another occasion he used the term “ buy a woman” as euphemism of “Marrying a woman”. In another lesson he was telling us a story about a Pakistani man who couldn’t “buy a woman” to marry her as he have no enough money so he found its relevant to buy a goat instead since the goat is much cheaper than a woman !! all that happened inside a program supposedly it made for integrating immigrants in The Norwegian society and that the Norwegian government spend a lot of money on it !! What a great integration results are expected from such program !!!
What which many Europeans who pay yet the price of their ancestor’s follies may not know that if we compared the suspicious racism - if any- has currently practiced toward immigrants with the racist practices committed by those with wheat skin color toward who have darker skin in the middle eastern countries they might start rethinking of their perceptions about themselves and the others.
In Saudi Arabia and all Arab Persian gulf states for example, people still using the word “Slave” (a’bd) in their daily conversations to refer to every individual with darker skin, the word “slave” replace the word “ dark skinned” or “ black” , so they say for example : My “Slave” friend John did this and that ….. , Or: I bought this phone the shop where the “Slave” John works ….., without feeling that they utter a racist expressions. such expression you could found it used naturally even by many people there who claim that they support human rights values and and oppose racism, but they couldn’t get rid of the racism hidden inside daily normal talks.
In Saudi Arabia also, the authorities launched a campaign in the fourth of November 2013 targeting the Ethiopian workers, arresting them claiming that they are violating the immigration laws. This campaign have been accompanied with waves of attacks and assaults launched by normal Saudi citizens armed with swords and choppers. They attacked the places where Ethiopian workers living with their families, beating them up and torturing them severely, recording that with their mobile cameras. Some workers died under torture, other killed after the police shot them in the streets. Some of the Saudi citizens who took part in this assaults proudly documented what they did with video recordings uploaded later on YouTube !!

And in Egypt where i was born and lived until the age of 27, the racism against black-skinned people is really clear and unmistakable for anyone’s eye or ear. Mothers for example get so angry if their sons or daughters thought about marrying a dark skin person, and most people agree on a certain beauty standards which according to it people with darker skin are considered ugly. The movies and dramas put Nubians, who is originally from southern Egypt and characterized by brown skin and local language in a stereotyped roles as servants and doormen.
and yet those who have darker skin color are not allowed to work as news readers or as presenters in the Egyptian state television.
In 2005, the Egyptian police killed 23 Sudanese refugees (according to some Sudanese activists the real number is 56) in the last days of the year while they was clearing a peaceful sit-in organized in front of the UNHCR headquarters in Cairo as those refugees was demanding being sent to a third country. The police broke up this peaceful sit-in after they got complaints from the residents of the surrounding area who claimed that they have been affected by the presence of those Sudanese people in their high classy neighbourhood saying that they “smell bad” and “having sex in the streets as animals”. After the police got involved and the sit in had cleared the sit-in which was resulted in killing of children, youth and old people of both sexes, those high classy residents expressed their satisfaction for what has happened.

In September 2007, i was spending my four years prison sentence on charges connected to my writings at Borg El-Arab Prison near Alexandria, when the prison received a large number of prisoners who came from different African countries, mostly from Sudan and Eritrea, have been arrested and sentenced to one year imprisonment by a military court on a charges of entering the country illegally through the southern borders with Sudan intending to travel to Israel.
The prison administration was treating them in an inappropriate way for human beings, they were housed in large numbers inside a number of cells which can barely fit half of them, and they wasn’t allowed to go out in the sun, the thing which made them start a mass hunger strike demanding a better treatment.
The prison administration was looking always down at them and when they decided to start their hunger strike the officers couldn’t understand how they could think about that and they thought there is something else stand behind their hunger strike decision. The officers was creating an a collective image about them; within this image’s frame they was not much more than a poor people escaped from their countries because there is famines over there with lack of food and drinkable water and that they are supposed to feel grateful to the prison administration as they are throwing them food like animals. In the end they found a solution for this dilemma when they accused me of inciting them on hunger strike just because i was talking to them in English which was apparently enough evidence to prove such a charge! and as result of that i have been punished and subjected to physical torture and spent 10 days in a solitary confinement cell deprived from having enough food and water more than half a loaf of bread with a small piece of cheese on it and a bottle of water for each day.

I often hear some stories told by immigrants in Europe tell about racism and discriminatory situations they have been through, most of those people came from Arab and Muslim countries, and of course i can’t show uncertainty toward such stories as its part of those people’s experiences which differ from person to another. But if i talked about my experience here as an immigrant in Europe with a Middle eastern physical features i can say its totally different. I can’t deny for sure that i have been exposed to some situations where i get through a suspicious discrimination when i was in poland, but it was too rare to be kept in mind for long. and after i came here to Norway i have never been through a suspicious discriminatory situation except one time when I was travelling to Slovenia last year and the man who work on KLM counter in Bergen Airport stopped me for long time claiming that Slovenia situated outside Schengen area and European union and I need a visa to travel there, which totally untrue! I showed him the list of Schengen countries on Wikipedia and that it includes Slovenia, but he insisted that Its not schengen as he tried to stop me for a while to make some phone calls perhaps to make sure that my traveling on board on this flight does not constitute a danger to the international peace and security, and i finally traveled!
With only one exception which i mentioned earlier, i didn’t feel any time that i am treated as outsider from the moment when i arrived to Bergen Airport coming from Krakow until the Moment i close this sentence with this full stop.
Finally i have to say that the racist and discriminatory practices are widely spread among Mideastern people much more than anyone can imagine, those practices targeting anyone who shows difference whether it was genetic or optional. But apparently that many people from there are unable to face themselves with their faults and crimes so they started searching like the bankrupt trader in their old notebooks for a someone pays the costs of their foolishness on behalf of them! that's why i urge my European friends to stop giving the accusations which Arabs and Muslims throw on them from their glassy houses any sort of attention that might give them a value they don’t worth to get.

Council Should Renew Commission of Human Rights in South Sudan      Cache   Translate Page

Human Rights Watch urges the Human Rights Council to renew and strengthen the mandate of the UN Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan and ensure it has enough resources to carry out its important mandate to collect and preserve evidence of serious human rights violations and identify those responsible. This mandate is all the more important given continued abuses and the disappointing lack of progress in the establishment of the AU-South Sudanese hybrid court to investigate and try the most serious crimes.

Throughout South Sudan’s civil war, now in its sixth year, government and rebel forces have repeatedly committed grave crimes against civilians on a massive scale, including unlawful killings, destruction of property, unlawful detentions, torture, enforced disappearances, rape and sexual violence. Over 4 million people have had to flee their homes, half of whom are internally displaced and the rest in neighboring countries as refugees.

HRW continues to document persistent abuses despite the signing of a “revitalized” agreement in September 2018, particularly in parts of Western Bahr al Ghazal, Unity, and Central Equatoria.  The abuses have included unlawful killings, destruction of villages, forced displacement and widespread sexual violence. The Commission, in its latest report, also documents emblematic incidents of violence against civilians in these locations, finding that both government and opposition forces committed serious crimes that could constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity. The Commission was able to identify commanders who may bear responsibility for the crimes in a confidential dossier.

The Commission also documents the powerful and draconian role of South Sudan’s national security and military intelligence which have arbitrarily detained, tortured and abused detainees and are implicated in several enforced disappearances. These findings are consistent with our research. As one 24-year-old Juba university student who was detained for three years without charge, and released in September 2018 following a presidential pardon told us:

“Up to now, I don't even know why I was arrested and detained.” As many other former detainees and families of detainees, he is yet to receive justice or redress for his unlawful detention.

Mr. President, impunity continues to be the main driver of these serious, ongoing abuses.

In the absence of another international mechanism to monitor and document human rights violations and abuses, the Commission’s role in collecting and preserving evidence for identifying those responsible for crimes  and potential use in future prosecutions is indispensable.

We urge the Council to renew the mandate for another year. If no progress is made to establish the hybrid court, the International Criminal Court remains the global court of last resort and should be pursued.

¡Eah a seguir pasando frio!

UNICEF: CAR is most dangerous country for children      Cache   Translate Page

Bangui, Central African Republic, Mar 11, 2019 / 10:00 pm (CNA).- Despite last month’s peace agreement between the Central African Republic government and rebel factions, the country’s citizens, especially children, continue to face violence and famine.

"This is the most dangerous place in the world for children," Caryl Stern, the CEO of United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund in the U.S. (UNICEF USA), told NBC News.

Ongoing battles between Muslim and Christian rebels have taken thousands of lives and displaced millions of people since 2013. The Political Accord for Peace and Reconciliation, signed in Kourham, Sudan, in February, is the eighth agreement to have occured.

Because of the violence between rebel groups, the country of over four million people has a shortage of necessities. According to UNICEF, 1.5 million children are at risk for starvation, 950,000 children are without access to safe water, and, in 2019, 38,000 children under the age of five will suffer severe acute malnutrition.

The children are not only threatened by a lack of food and water; they also face the risk of being recruited as child soldiers against their will.

According to NBC News, rebel groups control about 75 percent of the country, while the government has authority over the capital and other small sections. The country is dangerous for humanitarian groups; 396 attacks on aid workers took place last year.

David Brownstein, the U.S. chargé d'affaires in the Central African Republic, has expressed concern that the unstable nature of the country will give ISIS the opportunity to take hold of the area and promote further violence.

"ISIS takes advantage of vacuums. Literal vacuums, security vacuums, governance vacuums, perceived moral vacuums," Brownstein said, according to NBC News.

In February, a peace agreement was reached after a lengthy dialogue between the government and 14 major rebel groups. The African Union and United Nations mediated the discussion. Countries such as Chad, Angola, Congo, Gabon, Cameroon, France, Britain, the U.S. and Russia were also involved.

Vatican News reported that, under the agreement, the armed groups promised to refrain from the destruction or occupation of public places and sacred spaces. The deal also required that arm groups not harm civilians or humanitarian workers.

Bishop Juan José Aguirre Muños of Bangassou said the agreement was reached under false pretenses - a means for rebel groups to gain more control of the resource rich land, according to Vida Nueva.

"Although they already have control of 80% of the mines of diamonds, gold, cobalt, mercury ... and of transhumance, they want more,” he said.

“It is a screen to hide everything from above and continue conquering the country and stealing raw materials,” he added.

Sodomy Laws in the US and around the World      Cache   Translate Page
A sodomy law is a law that defines certain sexual acts as crimes. The precise sexual acts meant by the term sodomy are rarely spelled out in the law, but are typically understood by courts to include any sexual act deemed to be "unnatural" or immoral. Sodomy typically includes anal sex, oral sex and bestiality. In practice, sodomy laws have rarely been enforced against heterosexual couples (Wikipedia)

Sodomy arrest sparks controversy… 34 years ago

Michael Hardwick is arrested for sodomy after a police officer observes him having sex with another man in his own bedroom in Georgia. Although the district attorney eventually dropped the charges, Hardwick decided to challenge the constitutionality of Georgia’s law.

“John and Mary Doe,” who joined in Hardwick’s suit against Michael Bowers, the attorney general of Georgia, maintained that the Georgia law “chilled and deterred” them from engaging in certain types of sex in their home. But in 1986, the Supreme Court handed down its decision in Bowers v. Hardwick, ruling by a 5-4 vote that states could continue to treat certain types of consensual sex as criminal acts.

Apparently, Justice Byron White had characterized the issue not as the right to privacy in one’s own bedroom, but rather as the right to commit sodomy. Viewed in this narrow manner, it was no surprise that he was unable to find such a clause in the Constitution. Justice Lewis Powell, who also voted to uphold the law, later called his vote a mistake.

In June 2003, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a Texas law under which two men had been arrested for having consensual sex at home. The 6-3 Lawrence v. Texas decision reversed the infamous 1986 Bowers decision and finally dealt a death blow to sodomy laws throughout the country.

In its landmark ruling Lawrence v. Texas, the Supreme Court ruled that anti-sodomy laws —sometimes referred to as “crimes against nature” laws — are unconstitutional. But 12 states continue to keep such laws on their books. Of 14 states that had anti-sodomy laws, only Montana and Virginia have repealed theirs since the Supreme Court ruling, while anti-sodomy laws remain on the books in Alabama, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas and Utah.

You may believe anti-sodomy laws are not harmful because they can’t be enforced. But they are an important symbol of homophobia for those who oppose LGBT rights. What’s more, the laws create ambiguity for police officers, who may not be aware they are unconstitutional.

If a policeman looks it up, he will see that sodomy is a violation of Louisiana state law, for example, according to Marjorie Esman, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana.

Sodomy Laws around the World

In the recent years, sodomy related laws have been repealed or judicially struck down in all of Europe, North America, and South America, except for Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago.

There have never been Western-style sodomy related laws in the People's Republic of China, Taiwan, North Korea, South Korea, or Vietnam. Additionally, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia were part of the French colony of 'Indochine'; so if there had been any laws against male homosexual acts in those countries, they would have been dismantled by French colonial authorities, since male homosexual acts have been legal in France and throughout the French Empire since the issuing of the aforementioned French Revolutionary penal code in 1791.

This trend among Western nations has not been followed in all other regions of the world (Africa, some parts of Asia, Oceania and even western countries in the Caribbean Islands), where sodomy often remains a serious crime. For example, male homosexual acts, at least in theory, can result in life imprisonment in Barbados and Guyana.

In Africa, male homosexual acts remain punishable by death in Mauritania, Sudan, and some parts of Nigeria and Somalia. Male and sometimes female homosexual acts are minor to major criminal offences in many other African countries; for example, life imprisonment is a prospective penalty in Sierra Leone, Tanzania and Uganda. A notable exception is South Africa, where same-sex marriage is legal.

In Asia, male homosexual acts remain punishable by death in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Brunei, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen; but anti-sodomy laws have been repealed in Israel (which recognizes but does not perform same-sex marriages), Japan, Kazakhstan, the Philippines, and Thailand. Additionally, life imprisonment is the formal penalty for male homosexual acts in Bangladesh, the Maldives, Myanmar, Pakistan, and Qatar.

L’Europa ferma i Boeing 737 Max dopo il disastro aereo in Etiopia. I velivoli dello stesso tipo resteranno a terra in tanti altri Paesi, dalla Cina all’Australia, dall’Argentina all’India.

15: 17 Tren a París

Every revolution eats its own      Cache   Translate Page
Brian Sudano
Local crafts are beating national ones at their own game.

Craft beer is as healthy as ever as the shift from big brands to smaller micro-brands rolls on, putting pressure on all of the national players, craft or otherwise. In American craft beer, the students are becoming the masters and now the old masters need to adjust to these ambitious students. Just as big domestic beer gave way to crafts and imports over the past three decades, the best known national craft brands and many of the flagship imports are now giving way to a seemingly unstoppable pipeline of local and regional microbrews. We are now well into this new stage of the craft brewing revolution where these local and regional brands are taking market share from everyone across the spectrum, especially the craft flagships which built the industry as we know it today.

Not your father’s craft beer
With flavors and styles wildly different from the classic macro brews of Budweiser, Miller, and Coors, craft has always held a unique spot for more adventurous and experimental drinkers. But with the craft brew revolution in its fourth decade, the flagship brands like Sam Adams, Sierra Nevada, and Fat Tire are now part of the national beer establishment alongside the global industry stalwarts. As consumers, Millennials and Generation Z are accustomed to constant innovation and have a very visible preference for locally produced offerings. This is seen across many product categories, not just beer. The proliferation of local beer brands fits right into the Millennial and Gen Z wheelhouse and, as a result, it appears that there’s no end in sight to the small brand market share smash and grab we’re seeing in real time.

Even with its challenges, craft is still by far the class of American beer. An over-reliance on the IPA style, the specter of possible over-capacity, and the up and down quality of many local breweries are, and will always be, challenges. Additionally, the market is getting more crowded and the law of big numbers is a cruel master. Craft will slow at one point, it’s inevitable. But for now, the curious young consumer is well on board and the category remains the healthiest part of the beer industry. Our current numbers and future projections reflect this.

Crafts will continue to take share
Here at Beverage Marketing Corp., in our DrinkTell™ database, we estimate total beer will be down about 1% in 2018. However, we project craft beer will grow volume slightly above +4%, reaching just short of 21 million barrels for an industry market share of 10.4% based on our craft definition, a new record. Looking ahead, we expect craft will continue to churn along nicely from 2018 to 2022 at an annual volume growth rate between +3 to +4%. It should reach an industry share of 12% by 2022, an unthinkable level 20 years ago. The growth we see ahead will be driven primarily by hundreds and maybe thousands of new small brands finding their way from brew pubs and small breweries into the mainstream.

Our on-trade research provides a detailed view into the small craft beer brand trend. Beverage Marketing Corp.’s 2018 On-Premise Intelligence Report, produced in partnership with Technomic, provides a clear view into what’s really going on in the on-trade, where the war for the consumer is fought every day and craft is winning. Not surprisingly, consumers aged 21-34 are increasingly seeking out adult beverages in off-beat locations like casinos and bowling alleys. In many occasions, alcohol is a primary traffic driver and adds real value to the overall experience. Tap and tasting rooms are another emerging segment finding traction with consumers, playing well into craft’s strengths.

The numbers tell us that craft is winning at the traditional bar as well. Our data shows craft beer in the on-premise grew +3.4% last year versus a flat beer category, a great performance. However, each of the top five on-premise craft brands shrunk in 2018 and these five brands make up 20% of total craft sales in the on-premise. Normally, if the top five brands of a category were shrinking, there would be great cause for alarm. However, the ‘all others’—overwhelmingly the small locals—grew +5%. Most of these ‘all other’ brands have less than two million cases of volume individually, so the minnows are overwhelming the sharks at the bar.

The menu tells the story, and craft is winning that valuable real estate. Although craft beers make up slightly more than 10% of industry volumes, according to our research the category accounts for a whopping 45% of beer menu offerings. That compares to 25% for imports, 23% for domestics and 7% for all other malt beverage choices. Additionally, that number is up year-on-year +7%. Anecdotally, we see the evidence as plain as day in our channel checks. In our recent trade tour of downtown Atlanta, restaurant menus were overrun with craft. In most accounts we visited, we had to ask the server specifically for the menu of domestic macro beer options. Getting the local Georgia brand SweetWater was far easier than getting a Budweiser and that’s becoming all too common for the big brewers.

Where do we go from here?
We think the small craft beer players have three real advantages that they will use to continue pecking away at market share. First, they can avoid many of the mistakes made by their elders whether it be in product quality or marketing. Second, the young consumer is more on board with local and innovation than any time in recent memory, a wave that can be ridden for some time. Third, the big brewers seem to have no answers, and that’s certainly not being fixed any time soon. Craft’s outlook is still enviable.

US Again Cuts Women from State Department’s Human Rights Reports      Cache   Translate Page

Once again, the Trump administration has cut most mentions of key human rights abuses that disproportionately impact women and girls around the world from the US State Department’s annual human rights reports.

In the reports released today, March 13th, 2019, the State Department decided to remove analysis of women’s reproductive health and rights, including country-level analysis of maternal mortality and unmet contraceptive needs.

Women’s rights are often undermined at the individual level, but aggregate data, which was previously included in these reports, can reveal terrible trends of discrimination and neglect by the state. It took decades for the human rights movement and governments to realize this, but for at least 25 years there has been broad recognition that enabling women’s reproductive rights can positively impact their other fundamental human rights. The reverse is true as well.

Maternal mortality is a great example. What was long understood as a family tragedy or a public health crisis has now slowly been recognized to be a failure of human rights obligations. Human rights investigations of maternal death have revealed that when women die from preventable pregnancy-related causes, there are likely to be policies, practices, and laws that created an environment in which their life was not valued. Too often, no one is held accountable for their death.

Yet, the Trump administration doubled down on its decision to edit these types of abuses out of the annual human rights reports, and it did so at a time when the US has adopted its own draconian policy, the Global Gag Rule, that limits assistance to foreign organizations playing a role in  providing access to women’s comprehensive reproductive health services.

Congress can and should serve as a check on the administration’s dangerous policies. Earlier this month, Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Representative Nita Lowey (D-NY) introduced the Global Health, Empowerment, and Rights (HER) Act, a bipartisan and bicameral piece of legislation that would permanently repeal the Global Gag Rule.

The Reproductive Rights are Human Rights Act, another piece of legislation introduced on March 7, would ensure that reproductive rights are included in State Department reports. Congress mandated that the State Department release these annual reports, and Congress can mandate that they include women’s rights around reproductive health. It should move to pass these important bills.

Uganda: UNHCR Expresses Appreciation, Urges More Solidarity for Uganda’s Refugee Response      Cache   Translate Page
Source: UN High Commissioner for Refugees
Country: Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Uganda

Concluding a five-day trip to Uganda, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency’s Deputy High Commissioner Kelly T. Clements expressed appreciation to Uganda for its open door policy for refugees, and urged more global solidarity for the Ugandan people currently hosting more than 1.2 million refugees.

“I’ve been extremely impressed at how Uganda’s inclusive policies have improved the lives of refugees and the communities hosting them,” said Clements of her visit. “Uganda represents the Global Compact in action, but the country can’t do it alone. More global support is needed, particularly in the areas of education, economic opportunities and the environment.”

She visited refugee settlements in Adjumani, Moyo and Yumbe districts and met with refugee groups, district authorities, high level government officials and ministers including the Hon. Dr. Joyce Moriku Kaducu, Minister of State for Primary Health Care. She also met with Uganda’s First Lady and Minister for Education and Sports, Mrs. Janet K. Museveni, where she praised the national Education Response Plan, which fully integrates refugees into national and district planning in refugee-hosting areas.

Education is a major priority in the Uganda refugee response for 2019 and beyond. More than half of refugee children, and over one third of Ugandan children in refugee hosting areas, are out of school.

In Palorinya refugee settlement in Moyo district, Clements met with teachers, students and their parents and noted the myriad of challenges they face. She was moved by the story of a 22 year-old refugee woman, who committed suicide after learning she would not be able to pay school fees to complete her last year of secondary education

“We all want to prevent a generation of young people from being lost because they feel the future holds so little for them,” said the Deputy High Commissioner. “It is in places like Palorinya that more global solidarity with countries and people hosting refugees must be demonstrated.”

As part of a focus on education, Clements announced that UNHCR would re-allocate of 100,000 USD to ensure young students can continue studying in secondary school in the Palorinya refugee settlement.

The funds will cover school fees for more than 500 refugee and Ugandan youth who cannot afford to stay in school otherwise. This new support will also help to improve conditions in secondary schools and provide small, but critical supplies that can affect school attendance, like sanitary pads for female students.

In Adjumani, Clements visited a market with businesses owned by women entrepreneurs and heard from refugee and host community representatives. Education, health and environmental issues were the primary concerns raised during her interaction with the refugees and district authorities.

The Deputy High Commissioner’s visit highlights UNHCR’s priorities and needs for Uganda’s nearly 1.2 million refugees coming from South Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Somalia and Rwanda living across 30 settlements and Kampala.

Niger: Niger: Country Operation Update, February 2019      Cache   Translate Page
Source: UN High Commissioner for Refugees
Country: Algeria, Eritrea, Libya, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Somalia, Sudan

KEY INDICATORS

2,491 Refugees evacuated temporarily from Libya to Niger as part of the ETM (Emergency Transit Mechanism) from November 2017 – February 2019

1,675 Persons profiled by UNHCR in Agadez seeking asylum

62,671 Persons internally displaced in the Tillaberi & Tahoua regions

Operational Context

The key situations include:

  1. The Mali situation: began in 2012 with the outbreak of conflict in northern Mali. The regions of Tillaberi and Tahoua bordering Mali and hosting most of the Malian refugees are increasingly affected by insecurity and terrorism. A State of Emergency was declared in 2017, and extended and further expanded to areas bordering Burkina Faso at the end of 2018. There are currently 55,496 Malian refugees in Niger. The Government of Niger and UNHCR seek to accelerate the socio-economic integration of these refugees and the closure of the camps through urbanization by the end of 2020. An EU Trust Fund supported regional project as well as a GIZ supported project are supporting these efforts at local integration and development in Tillaberi and Tahoua regions.

  2. The Nigeria situation: began in 2013, with the arrival of the first Nigerian refugees across the border fleeing Boko Haram. The situation deteriorated with the first attacks on Niger territory in 2015. There are almost 250,000 displaced persons in the region (including 118,868 refugees, 104,288 IDPs, and 25,731 returnees). The majority live in spontaneous sites or with the local population, while UNHCR manages one refugee camp, with 15,136 people. In 2018, despite a complex security context, all actors agreed on the need to engage strongly in development oriented interventions. The Government of Niger, UNHCR and the World Bank are working closely in that direction. Additionally, an EU Trust Fund supported project is ongoing in Diffa region, aimed at supporting economic recovery and long term solutions through urbanization and the construction of durable housing.

  3. Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs): The displaced population in the Diffa region is extremely mixed, including refugees, IDPs and returnees. However, since the beginning of 2018, the IDP situation in Niger has become more complex with increasing insecurity in the regions of Tillaberi and Tahoua, bordering Mali. In 2018, and into 2019, attacks and insecurity in the area have resulted in the internal displacement of at least 62,671 people. Protection monitoring, advocacy, capacity building and coordinated efforts with humanitarian actors are ongoing to ensure an adequate response to the situation. In December 2018, the Government of Niger adopted a national law for the assistance and protection of IDPs based on the Kampala Convention.

  4. Mixed Movements: Niger is a major crossroads of migratory movements northwards towards Libya, Algeria and the Mediterranean. These migratory flows constitute mixed movements, including economic migrants as well as persons in need of international protection. In Agadez, UNHCR works to identify asylum seekers within the migratory flows and works with the government, as well as IOM and NGOs to provide these persons with information and assistance. 1,675 persons, mostly Sudanese, are currently registered by UNHCR in Agadez. 25% are minors and 180 are unaccompanied or separated children. The majority are seeking asylum in Niger. The situation has become more complex, with the addition of downward movements from Libya and Algeria. A new Humanitarian Centre was built to accommodate and screen those seeking international protection in the second half of 2018. Over 1,200 asylum seekers are now accommodated at the centre, while the most vulnerable (around 200 people) are supported in 3 guesthouses in the city of Agadez.

  5. Emergency Transit Mechanism (ETM): This unique programme aims to provide life-saving protection, assistance and long-term solutions to extremely vulnerable refugees trapped in detention in Libya, through temporary evacuation to Niger. The aim is to deliver protection and identify durable solutions, including resettlement for these refugees, who are predominantly Eritrean and Somalian. Their profiles mainly include survivors of torture or other forms of violence in the country of origin and/or transit countries (e.g. Libya) and others with compelling protection needs. Many of them are unaccompanied children and women and girls at risk. To date, 2,491 persons have been evacuated to Niger – 1,271 of whom are still in Niamey while the others have already been resettled. With the support of the EU Trust Fund, a new transit centre is being built near Niamey to host the evacuees while they await resettlement to third countries. It is expected that the first group of evacuated refugees will be transferred there in March.

—Pius Adesanmi, a Nigerian professor with Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, was on his way to a meeting of the African Union's Economic, Social and Cultural Council in Nairobi, John O. Oba, Nigeria's representative to the panel, told The Associated Press.

The author of "Naija No Dey Carry Last," a collection of satirical essays, Adesanmi had degrees from Ilorin and Ibadan universities in Nigeria, and the University of British Columbia. He was director of Carleton's Institute of African Studies, according to the university's website. He was also a former assistant professor of comparative literature at Pennsylvania State University.

"Pius was a towering figure in African and post-colonial scholarship and his sudden loss is a tragedy," said Benoit-Antoine Bacon, Carleton's president and vice chancellor.

Adesanmi was the winner of the inaugural Penguin Prize for African non-fiction writing in 2010.

Mitchell Dick, a Carleton student who is finishing up a communications honors degree, said he took a first- and second-year African literature course with Adesanmi.

Adesanmi was "extremely nice and approachable," and stood out for his passion for the subject matter, Dick said.

"Everybody was very proud of her and the work she did. We're still in a state of shock. Joanna was genuinely one of those people who you never heard a bad word about," he told the DevonLive website.

He also said she used to keep homing pigeons and pet rats and travelled to the remote Faroe Islands to prevent whaling.

Manuel Barange, the director of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations fisheries and aquaculture department, tweeted saying he was "profoundly sad and lost for words" over the death of the "wonderful human being".

— Joseph Waithaka, a 55-year-old who lived in Hull for a decade before moving back to his native Kenya, also died in the crash, his son told the Hull Daily Mail.

Ben Kuria, who lives in London, said his father had worked for the Probation Service, adding: "He helped so many people in Hull who had found themselves on the wrong side of the law."

Cache   Translate Page
How To Cross 5 International Borders In 1 Minute Without Sweating      Cache   Translate Page
So many nations are breaking up. Ukraine is in pieces. Moldova is teetering. Libya has no government to speak of. Sudan broke in two last year; now both sides are fighting. Yugoslavia is seven countries. Nigeria has a Christian/Muslim split. Syria has split so many ways it's barely there. Even Scotland is thinking of ditching Great Britain. With every break, we get new lines, new fences, new borders — further evidence of our failure to amalgamate, to get along. The more borders we have, the more quarrels, the more wars. That's one way to think about borders — they're trouble. Bad Borders, Good Borders But here's an alternative view. This one celebrates borders. It says, the more the merrier — that under the right conditions borders add spice to our otherwise ho-hum lives, that borders can be fun. This is, of course, a minority view. Very much so. But border boosters have one extraordinary case for their side, so extraordinary it's almost unbelievable, like a fairy tale. Still, what I'm

These are places to be avoided at all costs, they are extremely intolerant of gays, and risk your life, just for a few minutes of fun. No amount of money or any other incentive would ever lure me to visit such barbaric countries.

My friend Evita, well known activist of sexual liberation, tells me that in one night she was fucked by 20 University students from Egypt and Sudan. She was in a sea-side hotel on vacation when the group came to stay for the night . The following day they would travel by air to their countries. She met them in the bar of the hotel. They became friends. They consumed together some bottles of alcoholic drinks and they swimmed in the pool. After that she went to her room, where she was accepting them in her bed one by one. Before 9 a.m.next morning all 20 students had fucked her.

Red Mountain Theatre Co Launches 2nd Annual HUMAN RIGHTS NEW WORKS FESTIVAL      Cache   Translate Page

Red Mountain Theatre Company, led by Executive Director Keith Cromwell, announces the second-annual Human Rights New Works Festival, to be held at RMTC's Cabaret Theatre in Birmingham, Alabama March 21-24, 2019. The Festival's Birmingham-based selection panel, along with Festival Director Matt Schicker and 2019 Artistic Advisor Kenita R. Miller (Broadway's Once On This Island) have selected four scripts from dozens of submissions by writers from across the U.S., featuring a spectrum of human rights topics, which will receive staged readings followed by "community conversations" for the audience and artists to exchange feedback and questions and to further discuss the powerful themes and stories of these stage works.

"To me, the best art and theatre presents an audience not only with a reflection of itself, but more importantly a window through which to see the unknown," said Miller. "I am proud to participate in this year's Human Rights New Works Festival, because of its mission to remain curious about humanity and the space it has generously created for such a diverse group of artists and audiences willing to see more reflections of the unknown."

"We work really hard to ensure the Festival's titles are as broad and diverse as possible in their human rights angles, artistic sensibilities, demographics of the writing teams, characters presented, etc.," said Cromwell. "We're seeking to inspire conversation and community among the audience that experiences these works. We want them to be moved, engaged, andentertained over the course of the long weekend - it's often a tall order." That tall order was achieved last year in the inaugural Festival with works covering topics ranging from the cycle of poverty and incarceration, autism, racial inequality, and transgender issues. RMTC audiences raved about the material and participated actively in conversations following each reading.

Beyond the engagement of audiences who will attend the March Festival, RMTC structures the Festival experience to provide an artistic sandbox for writers in the further development of their play or musical.

"The audience is the final member of any cast," said Schicker. "So when they experience the piece, the writer(s) learn so much. What jokes land or don't? What plot points are unclear or too on the nose? Especially with new works like these, the writers are hungry for the feedback that will lead to continued refinement of their work. It's such an honor to be part of that exciting process."

The titles selected for inclusion in that process at this year's Human Rights New Works Festival are:

Maid's Door play by Cheryl L. Davis (Staged Reading -Thursday 3/21 at 7:30PM)

Set in the present day, Maid's Door centers around beloved matriarch Ida Farrell, who, like many African American women in the 1960s and '70s, worked tirelessly as a maid for decades to provide a life for her daughters that was unavailable to her. Now that Ida is older and exhibiting signs of illness, it is her daughter's turn to care for her mother. However, when Betty moves into an Upper West Side apartment, Ida comes face to face with old wounds and broken dreams that have haunted her for years, while her illness causes her to become increasingly trapped between the past and the present. This moving play highlights issues of patient's rights relating to Alzheimer's, and the reverberating effects of the legacy of slavery on families and individuals.

Fall of '94 musical - book by Ashley Robinson, lyrics by Ellen Fitzhugh, music by Joseph Thalken (Staged Reading - Friday 3/22 at 7:30PM)

Fall of '94 is a very personal coming-of-age story of five 12-year-old children in rural Union, South Carolina. Set during the unfolding of the Susan Smith tragedy, the eyes of the world were on this small mill town. While the kids' focus on perfecting their annual Halloween spook house, the excitement of a media frenzy consumes everyone around them and brings the town's dark secrets to the surface. Fall of '94 asks what affect events of violence and an atmosphere of racial tension have on children and young people.

The Way North play by Tira Palmquist (Staged Reading - Saturday 3/23 at 2PM)

When a lost, cold, and very pregnant young woman stumbles on to her rural homestead in the Minnesota wilderness, Freddy Hansen doesn't hesitate to take her in. It's the right thing to do, and as the county's former Sheriff, Freddy has dedicated her life to protecting and serving others. But when her new guest turns out to be a Sudanese refugee making a run for the Canadian border, what it means to protect and serve becomes a more complicated, and far more dangerous, question which Freddy must grapple with...before her daughter Alex and the new Sherriff arrive.

The Excavation of Mary Anning play by Ian August (Staged Reading - Saturday 3/23 at 7:30PM)

Amidst the groaning cliff sides and weather-beaten shores of southern England, fossil hunter Mary Anning combs the earth for glimpses of the ancient past. Armed with only her determination, her lucky hammer, and her erstwhile companion, Tray, Mary uncovers secrets that redefine science and religion and philosophy. But 19th century geology is a nobleman's game, and Mary's discoveries are buried beneath the rubble while the stars of her male counterparts grow ever brighter.

New to this year's Festival is The Actors' Academy Showcase with Kenita R. Miller (Sunday 3/24 at 2PM)Students, ages 13 to 18, have worked throughout the school year in RMTC's The Actors' Academy, honing their acting skills and writing their own work focused around a human rights issue. Sunday's showcase will feature excerpts from their work interspersed with songs from Miller. Students not only have the opportunity to perform their original material alongside a Broadway actress, but also to engage with professional writers throughout the course of the Festival.

The Human Rights New Works Festival takes place at the RMTC Cabaret Theatre, 301 19th Street North. Event details and tickets are available at www.rmtchumanrights.org.
