Lightning arrester installation      Cache   Translate Page
Recently I build my new house near Maharagama town. While building this house I allocate space for my antennas and observation equipment. Before installing antennas, I decided to install a lightning rod into the house. The main reason to install a lightning rod is because of the height of the building. It nearly 48 feet (approximately 15m) high, and located in open space, because of those reasons there is a very high probability to hit lightning into my antennas and other equipment.

Installed lightning rod

At the time of this writing, in here in Sri Lanka mainly two types of lightning arrestor systems are in use. The first type is a conventional lightning rod. This type of lightning rod is very common in Sri Lanka and it made with copper rods. The second type is ESE (Early Streamer Emission) type lighting arrestor. This ESE type is now getting popular in here and I saw it in a couple of new buildings. As I noticed most of the lightning arrestor installation companies are now moving into this ESE type solutions.

After reviewing lighting rods in the market, I decided to move into the conventional light rod. The main reason to select conventional light rod is because of its cost. Based on my findings decent quality ESE type lightning arrester costs around LKR 70,000 - LKR 120,000. Again this price further varies with its effective range. The conventional lightning rod costs LKR 9000 only. Also, the effectiveness of ESE type is still in debate. By considering everything I decided to stick to the low-cost conventional method.

Components of the lightning rod.

The next important thing about lightning rod installation is a grounding technique. To find out suitable grounding technique I measure ground resistance using ground resistance tester. After calculating everything I decided to use 25mm × 2.5mm copper tape as my ground conductor and 600mm × 600mm copper plate as a ground terminator.

Copper-tape which we used as a ground conductor.

I bought everything mention in here from a local electric shop. Considering all the components, most expensive items in this system are copper tape and copper plate.

The most painful part of this job is to install a ground conductor in the wall. Due to higher gauge and weight of the copper tape, it took an entire day to install ground conductor.

Support structure which we installed to place ground conductor to the wall.

Another view of the support structure.

After ground conductor installation, the next important task is digging a hole to install ground terminator. The dimension of the opening which we dig is 1.5m × 1.5m and nearly 3m in depth. To ensure lower resistance we combine copper earth-rod into the copper plate and install it inside the hole. Before closing the opening we pour nearly 50 kg of Bentonite powder mixture into it. Bentonite powder is maintenance free, commonly available, ground enhancement material and in here it ensures reliable conductivity between ground and copper plate/tape.

Ground connection layout.

Copper-plate installation with Bentonite mixture.

To fix lighting arrestor I build a structure using metal plates and tubes. The CAD drawing of the structure is available here.

Ground conductor after the installation.

It took nearly 3 days to install this lightning rod and finally now it's in service.

Sri Lanka: Need for time-bound plan for implementation of commitments to the Human Rights Council      Cache   Translate Page

    Your Excellency,

We write to seek your support in ensuring that the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC or Council) adopts a resolution at this 40th session to maintain scrutiny of Sri Lanka’s progress towards implementation of its commitments, including, at minimum, regular reporting to the Council and a time-bound plan, developed in collaboration with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, to implement its pledges.

In October 2015, the Council adopted resolution 30/1 by consensus in which Sri Lanka, through its co-sponsorship, committed to 25 key undertakings across a range of human rights issues. A core commitment was to set up four transitional justice mechanisms to promote “reconciliation, accountability and human rights” in the country. These included an accountability mechanism involving international judges, prosecutors, investigators, and defense lawyers; a truth and reconciliation mechanism; an office of missing persons; and an office for reparations.

While some positive steps have been taken by the government to date, both the current and former High Commissioners in their reports have expressed concern at the slow rate of progress.

The UN High Commissioner for human rights, Michelle Bachelet, noted in her September 2018 update that Sri Lanka has “moved too slowly towards meaningful implementation of the transitional justice agenda.” She reiterated concern at the “lack of sufficient progress, particularly towards truth seeking and accountability” during the recent intersessional dialogue with HRC members and observers on February 4, 2019, noting that this created “significant obstacles to reconciliation.”

Her predecessor, Zeid al Ra’ad Hussein, in his opening remarks to the Council on September 11, 2017, had called on the government to realize that its obligations are not a mere “box-ticking exercise to placate the Council but as an essential undertaking to address the rights of all its people.”

Yet, it appears that the Sri Lankan government continues with exactly that endeavor.

Thus far only the Office of Missing Persons has been set up, but progress was delayed. The commissioners were appointed only in February 2018 and making the office operational was marred with logistical difficulties. The commissioners have held both public and private consultations with the families of victims and are observing the ongoing excavation and exhumation of a mass grave in Mannar. However, in its interim report in September 2018, the  Office of Missing Persons called for “active cooperation” of various relevant state institutions, which has not been entirely forthcoming. Families of the forcibly disappeared are still awaiting answers.

While President Maithripala Sirisena said that all military-occupied civilian land in the predominantly ethnic Tamil north would be released by December 2018, progress has stalled, hindered in part by broad military claims of national security and the lack of a transparent process. Nor has the government fulfilled its pledge to repeal the abusive Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA). While the cabinet has apparently adopted draft legislation to set up a National Truth Commission, it has yet to be made public for civil society consultations. Sri Lankan civil society groups have expressed reservations about the proposed Office for Reparations Bill, calling for a fully independent mechanism.

There has been no discernible progress on establishing an accountability mechanism involving international judges, prosecutors, and investigators. Instead, Sri Lankan political leaders have repeatedly said that there will be no foreign judges, and that “war heroes” will be protected from prosecution. Importantly, a report issued by the government-appointed Consultation Task Force, which conducted extensive nationwide consultations on the transitional justice mechanisms, has not been given the attention it deserves. The Task Force report contains detailed recommendations, drawn from all affected communities including the security services, and provides an important blueprint for the way forward in addressing abuses by both the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and government forces.

Numerous UN experts and special mandates have since 2015 highlighted the marginalization and misrepresentation faced by minority communities, as well as a trust-deficit between these communities and the government, due in significant part to a culture of impunity. This was exposed during the recent political and constitutional crisis in Sri Lanka that laid bare the volatility of the political environment and the imperative need for continued international engagement to support the government in protecting human rights and promoting reform, reconciliation and accountability.

The Human Rights Council has played a vital role in identifying the many steps needed to reconcile with the past, ensure justice and accountability, and implement necessary reforms. Its scrutiny has proved an important catalyst for the progress made to date.

At the upcoming HRC session, the High Commissioner will present a substantive report on the progress towards implementation of the resolution – and the many challenges remaining. It is crucial that the Council remain fully engaged with the process until the commitments Sri Lanka made to the HRC and its own people through its co-sponsorship of resolution 30/1 are met in full.

To maintain confidence in the process, states should engage meaningfully with the High Commissioner’s report, and ensure the Council adopts a resolution that, at minimum:

    • welcomes the High Commissioner’s report (once available) and calls on the government of Sri Lanka to implement its recommendations;
    • reaffirms resolution 30/1 and underlines the importance of the commitments therein being met in full;
    • maintains reporting by the High Commissioner on the status of Sri Lanka’s progress towards implementation of its commitments, with opportunities for regular interim reporting through oral updates and interactive dialogues;
    • expresses concern at the slow rate of progress and requests the government of Sri Lanka to collaborate with the OHCHR to develop a time-bound implementation plan for consideration by the Council in an interactive dialogue.

Given the insufficient progress to date, and rising frustrations that any accountability process seems stalled, a mere technical “rollover” resolution will be insufficient unless it includes provision for a clear timetable and framework for Sri Lanka to fulfill its commitments.

States should also make clear that stronger measures are needed to assist in monitoring, implementing and fulfilling these commitments, such as an OHCHR field presence, Special Procedure and evidence-gathering, justice and accountability mechanisms.

Anything less would fall substantially short of the expectations of victims and their families, and risk undermining faith in the process long before the promises of reconciliation, justice and reform have been translated into reality. Sri Lanka’s long-term peace and stability hinges upon the international community’s willingness to support the government in addressing the past so that it may look to the future.

Sri Lanka's Architectural Treasures       Cache   Translate Page

    Sri Lanka, a bustling city whose history is well-preserved in its ancient buildings is a treasure trove for archaeological sites both of colonial and Buddhist importance. Arriving in the country's capital city of Colombo you get a taste of things to come with a 17th century walled port that you can enjoy with the conveniences of city living;

with the beach a few steps away and a sumptuous meal served at your hotel. Outside the city however, is a treasure hunt of sorts as you explore ancient monuments and kingdoms.
    Galle in Colombo

Galle Face Green is a walled fort that sits on 13 acres of land facing the Indian Ocean. The fort was first used as a fortification against the Portuguese when the country was under the rule of the Dutch. In 1856, a promenade was added to the fort and now serves as a weekend destination for both tourists and locals who want to enjoy the sunset.

    Sigiriya in Dam bulla

A whole city in itself, Sigiriya is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the best architectural treasures of Sri Lanka. The city was built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century on top of an unassuming massive granite rock. Your journey starts as you enter the gates guarded by the ruins of the 'Lion Rock', from which the name Sigiriya is derived from. On the way up is a mirror wall which was said to be well polished it served as the king's mirror and further are frescoes which were commissioned to adorn the sides of the rock. From the ruins on top, is a view of the well-preserved gardens and a landscape that no other than the king himself once enjoyed.

    Anuradhapura
North of Colombo is the ancient city of Anuradhapura, yet another UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was the seat of a great religious empire and is today considered a sacred city by Buddhists. Three types of architecture are noticeable in its ruins: bell-shaped dwellings called dagobas, Pokuna and monastic ruins. The largest of dagobas reach up to more than a thousand feet in circumference. Meanwhile, Pokuna were used as water reservoirs supplying the city's drinking and bathing water. And monastic ruins, feature pillars, platforms and sacred sculptures visible on walls and floors.

    Polonnaruwa
This ancient city began to rise after the destruction of Anuradhapura in the late 900s. It saw the rise and fall of numerous civilizations starting from the 12th century reign of Parakramabahu I. The most noticeable architectural design of the city lies in the unusual dimensions of the ruins-temples, tombs and statues, and the elaborate stretch of its gardens which vividly portrays the city's religious and commercial role.

From the historical city of Colombo to relieving the civilizations-past of 12th century ruins, Sri Lanka is clearly a top destination for those on the hunt for archaeological treasures. But aside from ruins, there are many more ways you can enjoy your Sri Lankan visa. In between tours, you can opt to enjoy the lively beach or escape to the calmness of your own stretch of beach.

Root and Wood Could Cover Up England Weaknesses      Cache   Translate Page

England have been on an imperious march to the World Cup since their failure in the competition four years ago in Australia and New Zealand.

The Three Lions were humiliated, failing to reach the knockout stage of the tournament. Eoin Morgan’s men played a brand of tepid cricket that put them well behind their rivals at the top of the sport. Their failure proved to be a watershed moment for England in one-day cricket and inspired a revolution in their style, which has made them the front runners for the World Cup.

Over the last three years, Morgan’s men won nine bilateral series in a row before their surge was ended against the West Indies in a draw in the Caribbean. In their run, they defeated Australia home and away, New Zealand and Sri Lanka on the road, along with a narrow 2-1 victory over India last summer. The Three Lions are a machine in the 50-over format, boasting the best batting unit in the world, while Adil Rashid has developed into one of the leading spin bowlers in the world.

England have few weaknesses, although the most glaring of them were exposed in their series against the West Indies. Their batsmen have been on song for 90 percent of the time since the last World Cup, but they have still displayed a propensity to stage dramatic collapses. Their defeat to Pakistan in the semi-final of the ICC Champions Trophy was a case and point, while further meltdowns against Sri Lanka last year and the West Indies in the final match of the series.

England’s ability to mount huge totals has been their biggest strength since the last World Cup. It results from their aggressive style of play that has seen them break the world record for the highest ODI total twice, coming within 19 runs of being the first team to post 500 last year against Australia. However, the same attitude can also result in rare failures. It only takes one of those days to halt their charge at the World Cup.

Although Joe Root does not boast the same striking ability as the rest of his team-mates in the line-up, he could be the Three Lions’ most important player in the tournament. He plays the anchor role to perfection, allowing the rest of the unit to tee off around him.  Root displayed that ability with back-to-back centuries against India in 2018, and it’s the reason why backing him to lead the way at the tournament with the most runs would be one of the best betting tips available, especially in familiar conditions in England.

The Three Lions have also been exposed at times in their bowling ranks. Without James Anderson and Stuart Broad in the 50-over game, England lack a world-class seam option. Chris Woakes has had his moments, although, on other occasions, he has been cannon fodder. In the Caribbean, Chris Gayle took him to task with ease and there are other openers that are also capable.

Mark Wood proved his worth in the ODI series against the Windies. He could be England’s ace card in the World Cup, highlighted by his match-winning spell of 4-60 to stop Gayle and company chasing down 418 in the fourth ODI. Wood has the raw pace to trouble the leading batsmen in world cricket. Paired with Rashid, it provides Morgan with a dangerous one-two punch to turn a match on its head. It will still take a complete effort from England to clinch their first World Cup crown, but they have star men that can put blemishes on their few weaknesses heading into the tournament.

Unfortunately these benefits from development restrain come at a price, the price been environmental defilement. The developing procedure affects the environmental stability of the world in many different shipway such as cli mate change, global warming and health hazards. With the heading of preventing or minimizing these negative effects, governments and opposite officials have brought forward many environmental regulations. These regulations have an influence on our daily lifestyle and on how industries hunt down. The story of environmental regulations in Europe goes back to the 19th century when the industrial revolution took place. In 1972 European officials alleged environmental policies with terzetto main objectives. The main objectives were to prevent and reduce environmental impairment, to support environmental stability and to fit the use of inborn resourcefulnesss. Since then the environmental policies has been changing and affecting many industries around the globe. many main industries include the building sedulousness, automotive industry, manu particularuring industry and air industry.Different industries handle environmental regulations using different approaches and the sp ecial allude on the industry differs from unmatched to an a nonher(prenominal)(prenominal). This take care will look in to the environmental impact on the air power (aerospace) industry and how it will affect the emerging of the industry and it will excessively investigate where the air power industry stands presently when it comes to environmental regulations. air travel pollution is highly undergo in and around airdromes. This is the agent why I take awayed this finickyised project. My future computer programme is to study further on Airport Planning and vigilance furthermore my ambition is to work for my unsophisticated Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is a developing country which h as less experience on the subject of environmental pollution which is an different discernment for me to select this project. Objectives In order to cave in the proceedion of the project easy, the project is carried out in collar main dos. This will in addition help to be on track according to the project plan these three full points are illustrated as following.Stage 1 This pegleg helps to get an thinker on what the project is really about and gives an idea what to expect in the future. Stage one mainly involves general broad reading. Objectives for coif one is as follows. * Planning the project * What is environmental pollution about * The recital of the regulations established to protect the environment * Critical analysis of environmental regulations * How environmental regulations effect the general public * Environmental regulations and different industries * Future of the regulations * Introductions to airwave and environmental regulations * Any other general re adingStage 2 The stage twain helps to build up give opinions and exonerate more information on the actual subject. One other main objective in stage two is to think about possible applications for the project. The objectives for stage two is as follows. * Altering the project plan if needed * Regulations on the aviation industry * How the industry act according to the regulations * How different is the aviation industry when compared to other industries * structure up an own opinion on the subject * equivalently applications for the project * Report submission (the planning report)Stage 3 This is the final stage of the project where the possible application is developed based on own opinions of the subject. The reading done in this stage should be more contract on the subject. By doing search it is important to do an in-depth analysis of specific subject selective information. By stage three the application of the project should be specifying a particular subject, if the a pplication is too general or dialog about many issues it will be hard to reach to a conclusion for the project. The objectives for stage three are as follows. * In-depth reading on specify subject area (aviation) Working on one specific application * Coming to a conclusion based on the specified application * Presentation on the project * Report submission (final report) Deliverables General aim of the project was briefly explained earlier in the introduction. If it is to be recapped again, the general aim is to evaluate the impact by environmental legislations on the aerospace industry. For this particular topic on that point can be many end applications since it is a broad subject area, thusly it is important to narrow the subject matters into a one specified section and continue with the application.By the time the application is consummate there will be some deliverables. To explain the deliverables a potential application is used. The application used here might not be exac tly the same as the final application of the project since it is sole(prenominal) an sign application. Application Air Traffic (aviation) and environmental legislation What will be looked into? (What will be found out during the project? ) * How airlines operate (in the EU and Global) * Growth of the air transport * What is the impact What is the attitude from the airlines towards the regulations * Environmental damage including the present past and future * What will be the future for the aviation under the regulation * Comparison aviation to other industries (environmental aspects) * Some other points ( manufacture of aircrafts/economy/other related pollutions) * Finally criticizing the analysis with the own opinion Deliverables change according to a selected application. One other possible application that can be use is to look in to the manufacturing of aircrafts, materials used and how waste is treated according to environmental legislations. In order to gain all the mentione d deliverables the project should be at the end of stage three as stated in the objectives. Since this project is still at stage two the deliverables might change as the project progresses. Literature suss out (Findings up to date) The initial publications review was done in three categories which are, 1. General (any industry other than aerospace) environmental issues and legislations. 2. Environmental legislations and issue on manufacturing industry and materials. 3. Aerospace related environmental legislations and issues. This way of reading was used to occupy sure that a broad general k nowledge is gained on environmental subjects before stepping in to the specified topic. 1. General environmental issues and legislations History of the environmental policies, legislations and organisations EU Environmental Policies,2006 As mentioned earlier in the introduction the Environmental protection Agency (EPA) first brought forward official policies in 1973. Up to now 5 major regulati on changes were done by the EPA. Changes were done to manage current environmental issues which existed during specific times.EPA gatherings during the past years is as following, * maiden EPA 1973 Made rules to save water, air and soil. Since it was the first EPA many other new(a) rules were established. * 2nd EPA (1977-1981) Did not publish any new regulation. It was held to review the progress of the first EPA. * 3rd EPA (1982-1986) Discussion on the impact of environmental legislations and economy. waiver rules and how to effectively get rid of waste. * 4th EPA (1987-1992) Increasing the general caliber of the regulations. The public should be educated more about pollution. Construction industry and environmental impact Natural Building Technology,2011 * The construction industry induce 7% (from the total) carbon dioxide in the UK. Using of buildings induce 50% carbon dioxide. * acquire rid of the waste is a major issue faced by the construction industry. * Construction industry requires natural resources such as wood. This leads to environmental pollution. Most of the natural resources are taken from China, India and South East Asia, therefore the damage is not directly done to the county where buildings are constructed. Environmental legislation impact on the automotive industry The give University,2003 * First emission standards were introduced in 1959 for carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emission. * Most of the world use emission examination for vehicles. * The regulations are tight on the diesel motor locomotive engine use. * Due to the regulations engine life span is getting less and new designs are introduced frequently. * Regulations has changed node point of view. They are looking for more efficient engines with less hitch for a reasonable price. * Due to the hybrid and electric vehicles the future of the diesel engine is not promising. 2. Environmental legislations and issues on the manufacturing industry and materials Environmental Materials UK midsection for Materials Education, 2011 * Stages of material usage include extraction, production, product design and disposal. * The subject environmental materials look in to the material structure, chemical and physical properties. Other than that it also looks in to the economical point of view. Picture below shows the lifecycle of a material Diagram 01, Life Cycle Analysis UK Centre for Materials Education, 2011 The impact of environmental regulations on the UK manufacturing sector Nottingham University, 2011 * In a country the economy and environmental pollution is not proportional if that country has proper regulations. * Current regulations act as a helping hand towards the development. * Some regulations are not helping innovation. * More flexible regulations are good for the economy. * UK manufactures always select the short term regulations. * Many companies now use materials with produce less waste. . Aerospace related environmental legislations and issues. Growth of aviation Professor John Whitelegg ,2000 * Since 2006 the suppuration has been 30% and it will double by 2020. The growth from 1995 to 2015 is nearly 300%. * Aviation has the highe st growth rate of all modern transport methods. * Global tax income passenger kilometres (RPK) increased by a factor of 4. 6 (since 1970-1995). RPK growth for different regions are- North the States 27. 5%/Europe 12. 5%/America to Europe 11%/ Asia to America to Europe 12. 7/rest of the world 36. 5%. barely by today Asia (china and India) has the highest RPK due to the rapid development. By 2015 310 million passengers will go through UK airports (in 1995 it was 126 million). Noise pollution by aviationProfessor John Whitelegg ,2000 * The preventive pollution is commonly experienced around the airports. Officials claims that the disruption footprint of the UK airports has gone down, but complaints from the public against the new terminal 5 in Heathrow airport proved that claim was wrong. * In Netherland note pollution by aircrafts is 12%. * UK officials claim that the number of people exposed to noise pollution has rapidly gone down, but Germany had done an investigation on the s ame matter and came up with a different claim. They stated that there is an increase in the number of people who are exposed. * Noise pollution effects human health in many different ways. pollution by aircraft emission Professor John Whitelegg ,2000 * Gasses which pollute the environment carbon monoxide/ north oxides/ ozone / particulate matter (PM)/ volatile organic compounds (VOC)/ sulphur dioxide. * UK officials claim that aviation pollution is insignificant, but US info for Zurich and Stockholm airports show that aviation emission pollution is significant in well-defined geographical area. flurry below shows the Heathrow airport annual emission data Diagram 02, Heathrow airport annual emission Professor John Whitelegg ,2000 * Prediction shows that by 2050 carbon dioxide will increase by 588% and nitrogen Oxide by 411%. * Aircraft emission at speed troposphere and lower stratosphere can cause serious climate change problems. insurance measures and management in aviation Pro fessor John Whitelegg ,2000 * There are few regulations for the aviation industry when compared to other industries. * Aviation industry should also follow regulations as other industries do. Current environmental regulations on aviation are out dated. * Aircraft fuel is not under any taxing. * To control pollution it is important to manage the transport demand. * If a new regulation is introduces it should be introduced step by step. All the above mentioned points are from initial literature review. These data are brief descriptions obtained from broad reading. More detailed data are available in the log book. Gantt Chart The time achievement from 29/09/11 to 25/11/11 represents the stage one and two from the objectives.By the time this report is completed this section will be completed. Stage one and two has only got four slots allocated and it is only a quarter of the total slots available. This shows that the amount of work which has to be done in stage 3 is comparatively high . The time allocation for specified reading, conceptualization for the final report and project seminar report and poster submission is comparatively high. These are very important tasks of the project therefore they are red ink to consume more time relative to other tasks. The third stage starts on the 26/11/11 and it ends on 26/04/12.Note A full sized Gantt chart is attached in the appendix. Discussion The initial literature review shows general connections and areas where environment regulations have failed to achieve the take results. The regulations have been there for almost 30 years now but still most of the issues are not completely solved. Greenhouse splash emission has considerably decreased during the past years, but the rate of chasten is not that impressive. The natural resource use has also rapidly increased up to a point where the general public can observe the effects of it.It is fair to say that the world is in desperate need of finding alternative sustainabl e energy methods to survive in the future. There is a hidden truth behind the use of natural resource by developed countries. Most of the developed countries have limited their natural resource use but in order to fulfil their needs, natural resources are imported from other developing countries. This may seem gravid on the developed countries side but what they do not make out is the fact that negative effects from harvesting natural resources (no matter where it comes from) is exit to be global.By going through the data I feel like the environmental regulations has gone easy on the aviation industry when compared to other industries. Best example for this is the fact that automotive emission percentages are declining plot aircraft emissions are on the rise. As an excuse for this most officials (mainly in the UK) compares data from 30 years back and claims, there is a drop in emission levels, but what they are not doing is, comparing data with other industries. If the emission is compared with other industries it will be glaringly obvious that more work should be done on aircraft emission standards. One main reason for the slackness towards the environmental regulation on aviation industry is that aircraft craft only contributes a small percentage towards the total pollution of the planet. But this claim is not that accurate, it doesnt take in to account the manufacturing process of aircrafts, natural resources used in the process and vehicle emissions due to airport traffic. Emission is not the only environmental problem caused by aviation, noise pollution is another main issue caused by aviation. New research shows that exposition to high noise levels can cause serious damage to people.People who are continually exposed to high noise levels are more likely to gain noise related health issues, due to this fact living near airports can be a prime reason for health hazards. Likewise there are many unsolved problems involving the environmental pollution and aircraft industry. More details regarding issues and practical solutions for the issues will be researched and criticised in the next stage of this project. Furthermore an appropriate application will also be used to narrow the subject in order to make it more specific.Reference * EU Environmental Policies, 2006 A short history of the indemnity strategies.

"Rumah kami hanya berupa gubuk tanpa sanitasi.

Satu rumah memiliki luas sekitar 81 meter persegi.

"Biaya rekening cukup murah," katanya.

"Semua biaya sekolah ditanggung pemerintah," kata Gulnur.

Secuil Inisiatif Belt and Road di Turugart, Wuqia

Pointless Theatre Presents FOREST TREAS      Cache   Translate Page

Pointless Theatre presents the world premiere of a newly commissioned work, inspired by the DC Sniper events.

October 2002. The ongoing Beltway Sniper crisis looms over the residents of Forest Treàs, a neighborhood on the outskirts of Washington, DC. As the Neighborhood Association struggles to maintain a sense of calm and security, a documentary filmmaker proposes a radical solution: put cameras everywhere and live-stream their neighborhood. What could go wrong?

Mr. Roger's Neighborhood meets Dogville; with live video streaming as a form of post-modern puppetry.

Devised by Pointless company member, Navid Azeez - a Sri Lankan American multi-disciplinary artist, born and raised in Montgomery County, MD. Navid brings his outlandish range of skills and influences into writing, composing, and sound designing this original exploration of mass media and trauma.

"In most cases, violence happens absurdly quickly. The media response is the thing that sticks around, amplifying long after the event is over. With the Beltway Sniper, we have have a chance to examine an event where the violence and the media coverage surrounding it went hand in hand for a prolonged period of time, and explore how people interact with and respond to media in an ongoing time of crisis."

Kelly Colburn to direct. Kelly is an interdisciplinary artist born and raised in P.G. County. She has a BFA in Theater from New York University, Tisch School of the Arts and an MFA in Projections and Multimedia Design from University of Maryland. She is a director, writer, designer, and performer.

"As a multimedia artist I am interested in how we engage, ignore, enhance, relive, and remember our history. Ranging from personal, global, physiological, emotional, or sensual, we paint the stage from a new perspective when investigating how each piece (dance, theater, or film) explores the subtle and complex matters of the human condition. We discover and respond to what has been, what will be, and what is now."

This work is funded in part through a DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities grant and will include a series of free community engagement events - or "Pointed Conversations" - surrounding the themes of the show:

June 9: Post-Show discussion with the creative team behind Forest Treàs
June 13: Panel Discussion led by the Wendt Center discussing grief and trauma

Bengal Open golf: Rashid's 64 lifts him to tied 2nd      Cache   Translate Page

Kolkata, March 13 (IANS) Delhis Honey Baisoya recovered well after a slow start to fire a second straight six-under-64 that gave him the halfway lead at the inaugural Bengal Open Golf Championship at the Tollygunge Club, here on Wednesday.

Baisoya, a six-time winner on the PGTI, was one clear of the rest of the field at 12-under-128.

It was a crowded leaderboard as there was a four-way tie for the second spot at 11-under-129 between Delhi's Rashid Khan (64), Bangladesh's Badal Hossain (66), Chandigarh's Karandeep Kochhar (66) and Faridabad-based Karan Pratap Singh (67).

The day's best round of 63 was posted by Delhi's Himmat Rai, Bengaluru's Trishul Chinnappa and Sri Lankan N Thangaraja. While Himmat occupied tied sixth place at 10-under-130, Trishul was tied ninth at nine-under-131 and Thangaraja tied 20th at six-under-134.

The cut went at two-under-138 and 51 professionals made the cut.

Honey Baisoya (64-64) jumped five spots from his overnight tied sixth, thanks to his dogged 64. Honey, who won his last event about a year back, dropped an early bogey on the first where his drive found the trees.

The 22-year-old Baisoya was one-over through four holes before he charted a splendid recovery with consecutive birdies on the fifth, sixth and seventh. Honey missed an ace on the sixth as his magnificent tee shot stopped inches from the hole. After another dropped shot on the eighth, Baisoya hit top-gear on the inward nine with five birdies, courtesy some accurate drives and approach shots.

Honey said, "I've shot two rounds of 64 but I would rate today's round better as I started from the front-nine, which has some tough holes at the beginning especially the first and the third. I got into my stride on the back-nine today as I created a lot of chances by consistently hitting the fairways.

Rashid Khan, the winner at Chittagong last week, moved up from tied 12th to tied second, thanks to another flawless round. Incredibly, five of Rashid's last six rounds have been bogey-free.

Badal Hossain continued in tied second position having traded five birdies for a bogey. Karandeep Kochhar also hung on to joint second place for the second day running.

Round one leader Karan Pratap Singh slipped to tied second after mixing five birdies with a double-bogey. The rookie's sharp short-game saw him make some quality chip-putt birdies and four long putts to save par.

Himmat Rai began the day with birdies on his first three holes, including a chip-in on the 12th. He was seven-under through 10 holes but then stumbled with bogeys on the second and third. However, he managed to pull it back by picking up two more shots thereafter and thus recording the day's joint best round.

Among the prominent names, Bengaluru-based Rahil Gangjee (67) occupied tied 16th at seven-under-133, while Indian star and local favourite SSP Chawrasia (65) was in tied 20th at six-under-134. Incidentally, SSP's nephew Sunit Chowrasia (71), who was overnight tied second, also ended the day in tied 20th place. SSP and Sunit will now be playing in the same group in round three.

    Your son's penis, that is.
DaVinci's "Vitruvian Man" - Did you ever notice that he has his whole penis?

I know, talking about baby penises seems like a strange choice for a blog post.  I used to think that penises came in two varieties, circumcised and uncircumcised....but education is a powerful thing.  Now, I know that they only come in one style - Natural - and we, as parents, choose to alter what God or Nature or Evolution or The Great Spaghetti Monster created.

Why am I calling "uncircumcised" penises "natural"?  Most of the "intactivist" culture uses the word "Intact", which is also accurate, but really, an uncircumcised penis is exactly that - natural.

Just like women without breast implants have "natural" boobs, or a person has their "natural" nose before a nose job.   It's the way nature made it - therefore, a natural penis.  Does that mean a circumcised penis is unnatural?  Yes, it does.

I do want to note that I'm not anti-circumcision.  If an adult man wants to modify his body, that is his choice and I support it - just as I would support a woman who wanted labiaplasty, or anyone who wanted to stretch their earlobes or tattoo their body.  I am opposed to the routine circumcision of infants for non-medical reasons.

So, here are 50 reasons to leave your son's penis alone and not let a doctor cut it up.

    1.) It's his.

2.) I've never met a man who wanted "less" penis when he was old enough to care.  Men tend to like their penises just the way they are.

3.) You can change your mind.  It's not possible to "un-circumcise", although there are men who have chosen to restore their foreskin later in life.  If you're not sure, don't decide at all.   It's a non-decision.  :)

4.) There is no medical reason to do it routinely.

5.) Circumcision isn't the majority for newborns anymore.  According to the New York Times, the infant circumcision rate is down to 32%.  That means 68% of your son's locker room will likely have natural penises.  If you circumcise, he will probably ask you why he's different from his buddies.

6.) Natural penises are easier to take care of during the diaper-changing years.  Just wipe it like a finger.  No retracting, no mess or fuss.  Compare that to having to care for an open wound in a diaper.

7.) You wouldn't cut your baby girl's genitals.  In fact, it's illegal - even a "nick" is illegal.  Male circumcision is a lot more involved than a nick!

8.) Many doctors and nurses refuse to perform the procedure because it violates the Hippocratic Oath - First, Do No Harm.

9.) It hurts.  A lot.  Really.  Don't believe me?  Watch a video.  With the sound up, please.  If you can't watch the whole thing, can you really ask your newborn to go through it?

10.) Babies can't be properly anesthetized.  An older child or adult would be given anesthesia and strong pain medication after any kind of operation, especially one on their genitals.  Babies can't have the same level of anesthesia and after-care medicine that an older child or an adult would receive.

11.) Did you know?  Infant circumcision rates are less than 10% in the following counties: England, France, Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Canada, Mexico, all of South and Central America, Japan, China, Russia, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Greece, Taiwan, Vietnam, India, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Australia and more.

Infant circumcision rates are higher than 10% in the following countries: USA, Israel, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Syria, Lebanon,  Yemen, Qatar, Turkey, Jordan, Philippines, Indonesia, Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad, Republic of Congo, Eritrea, and Kenya.

12.) Men with natural penises are less likely to experience Erectile Dysfunction as they age.  Translation - your son will be less likely to need Viagra when he's 55.

13.) Female sexual partners of men with natural penises are more likely to achieve orgasm during sexual intercourse.  They are also less likely to need lubricant.

14.) There are over 20,000 nerve endings in the foreskin.  That's more than in the female clitoris.

15.) The foreskin protects the head of the penis.

16.) The foreskin provides lubrication during sexual intercourse.  Men with natural penises are less likely to use lubrication during sex or masturbation.

17.) No major medical organization on earth recommends routine circumcision of infants.

18.) It's easy to clean when he's older.  Shower.   Besides, by the time his foreskin is retractable, (average age, 10.4 years old), you will no longer be cleaning his penis.  I hope.

19.) Circumcision does not prevent AIDS, or any other STD. Condoms do.  Having sex with one, monogamous partner and avoiding IV drug use prevents AIDS.  Why would you assume your baby's going to be a man-whore anyway?

20.) We don't chop off ears to prevent ear infections.  We don't remove baby toenails to prevent fungal infections.  We don't cut off body parts anymore when a wound becomes infected.  In the very unlikely event your son does develop an infection, we have antibiotics.

21.) Circumcision in the US began as a method to discourage masturbation, advocated by Kellogg, the cereal magnate, who also believed in the importance of daily cold enemas.  Really - true story!! He stressed that circumcision should be done without anesthesia so boys would remember the pain every time they wanted to masturbate.   How'd that work out?

22.)  Natural penises only "look funny" to you if they are unfamiliar to you.  Your son's generation will see them as normal.

23.) Women produce far more smegma than men, but we don't cut off their baby girl labia to keep things "clean."

24.) Your son will respect you for leaving the decision up to him, and for respecting his right to genital integrity.

25.) Complications of circumcision are NOT rare. Check out this thread on Babycenter.com (a mommy board, not a circumcision website) to read their stories.

26.) Most hospital circumcisions are performed by Obstetricians and Gynecologists, whose specialty is female reproduction, not male.

27.) Circumcision is not usually performed in a sterile operating room, but in a dirty nursery or a side room in hospitals without nurseries.

28.) Circumcision makes money for doctors.  A doctor who performs circumcisions makes an extra $20,000-160,000 per year on the operations.  That's why they offer circumcision at hospitals - for cash.  They'll ask you if you want your son circumcised multiple times at the hospital: they want the money.

29.) Less than 1% of men with foreskins will ever "need" to be circumcised, just as the vast majority of women will never need a hysterectomy or mastectomy.  We don't remove tonsils or fingernails or anything else at birth "in case" it has a problem.

30.) Penile cancer causes 300 deaths a year, almost exclusively in men over the age of 70.  Infant circumcision causes over 500 deaths a year worldwide.  Circumcision does not prevent penile cancer.

31.) Babies with foreskins are more likely to breastfeed successfully.  Infant circumcision interferes with breastfeeding and hinders breastfeeding success.  Isn't breastfeeding hard enough?

32.) Fathers don't spend time comparing penises with their sons.  If your son does notice that his penis is different from Dad's (other than size and hair), you can simply explain that Daddy had an operation when he was a baby.  My dad lost half of his ring finger in an accident, but I was never bothered by having all of my fingers.

33.) Your grandfather (or great-grandfather) probably wasn't circumcised, unless you are of Jewish or Muslim descent.  It's a relatively new thing in the USA.  Abe Lincoln and George Washington had foreskins.

34.) Most circumcised penises have scars.  If you've ever seen a circumcised penis, you have probably seen circumcision scars and didn't know what they were.  Curious?  Click here for pictures (adult eyes please, extremely graphic).

35.) When erect, natural penises don't look very different from circumcised ones (adult eyes please)

36.) Babies have died following complications of circumcision.

37.) Babies have had the glans (head) of their penis accidentally amputated during circumcision.

38.) Female circumcision was legal in the United States until 1985.  It was practiced in the USA as recently as the 1979 to prevent masturbation.

39.) Your health insurance may not cover the procedure.  Medicaid does not cover it in 16 states, and many major insurance companies also do not reimburse for the surgery, since it is cosmetic.  If your insurance doesn't cover it, it probably also does not cover any complications.

40.) Babies are strapped down on a circumstraint to have the procedure done.  That is the most unnatural, terrifying position for a baby, who previously was all curled up and safe inside Mama's body.

41.)  If you believe in evolution, why are men born with foreskins?  If you believe in God, why did he give men foreskins?  Did they screw up?

42.) If you are Christian, your religion actually *forbids* circumcision.  Your son's body is a temple, and Jesus was the sacrifice to end all sacrifices - including the foreskin.  See this link for more info.

43.) If you are Jewish, you should know that there is considerable debate about the religious necessity of circumcision.

44.) If you do believe that your religion requires the sacrifice of the foreskin, your son can choose to sacrifice his foreskin in the name of religion when he is old enough to make the decision himself.

45.) The foreskin is fused to the head of an infant's penis, just like your fingernail is fused to your finger.  Have you ever pulled back your fingernail all the way?  Owwwwwwwwwwwww.

46.) Circumcision makes penises smaller.  Who wants a smaller penis?

47.) "My partner should make the decision, he has a penis/she looks at penises" is a dumb reason to abdicate responsibility for a decision.  You are your baby's parent, penis or not, and you have a responsibility to protect your child from harm.  Victims of FGM (aka female circumcision) are the most vocal supporters and perpetrators of the abuse.  Call on your inner Mama or Papa-bear and stand up for your baby's rights.  Make your partner watch a video with the sound on and convince YOU why they want this done to their precious child.

48.) You have seen an uncircumcised penis, and you probably didn't even notice.  Take a look at this (safe for kids) picture!

49.) He'll be in good company.  Check out this (in my opinion, mouth-watering) gallery of famous intact men!  From Elvis, James Dean, Will Smith, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jude Law and sooo many others.
     Jensen Ackles, my personal favorite.

50.) It's his.  I know, I said it already. but it's really the first and last reason - and perhaps the only one you really need.  It's his body, and unless medically necessary, it should be his choice.  You wouldn't give him a nose job without his permission, you wouldn't tattoo your infant.  This is the same thing.  If you really look at your motives, why would you want to take the risks?  Leave the decision where it belongs - in your son's hands.

WE'VE DONE IT!       Cache   Translate Page
    Greetings fellow santa clauses!
    welp, IT'S A WRAP.
The fundraiser project is now, well, finished(I can't find the right word for this honestly)

The total amount raised is 538USD!!

And it's all thanks to all you incredibly lovely, generous and awesome people.

Below are lousy screen captures of when I did the donations.

I donated to 3 different projects by World Vision Singapore , all projects providing aid for children In Cambodia, China and Ethiopia since my goal for the fundraiser is to help the less fortunate children.

And also donated to The Rainbow Centre(Sri Lanka) whereby they provide education, welfare & support for children living in extreme poverty in Southern Sri Lanka.

I donated an extra 100sgd myself to The Rainbow Centre so yeah, just sayin' in case the math is wrong or something.

You guys should all throw a little party because you've helped made this project, if I may say, SUCCESSFUL!
All the funds were raised in a week so that's really awesome. Seriously.

The whole project has been really amazing for me because of the amount of support I got from all of you, man I'm horrible with words as usual but can't emphasise enough that, I appreciate everything you guys have done!
I don't know all of you well even though I'd love to, so to actually receive such 'response' for a project that I just told you guys out of the blue is flippin' mind blowing for me.

It was a pretty crazy one month for me and I've never worked this hard for my birthday before (haha. If only you guys can see how much of a zombie I am at work) but it is definitely worth it. The paintings sold out really quickly, receive lots of lovely comments, told other people about this project, I really wish I can do something more than just saying a BIG BIG THANK YOU.
(Why am I not better with words, darn)

My birthday this year is without a doubt an incredibly meaningful one and one of my best birthdays ever.
I got to, in a way, celebrate it not only with my family, but with so many of you from different parts of the world through the amazing thing called the internet!
    &
    be santa clauses. :B

So go buy some cookies, ice cream, cake, whichever you prefer, play some christmas music maybe and celebrate because you all deserve it!

    Thanks again. c':

P.S I'll probably update again with scans of the paintings and upload them on my tumblr. Till then.

Introducing Milton and Stella      Cache   Translate Page

    HELLO FELLOW SANTAS!
You guys probably know from twitter and Instagram that
    I've finished all 20 paintings.
    Yay!
I really enjoyed painting these even though it's lots of late nights, tea and racing against time.
You guys have been giving very kind comments and shown lots of support so thank you so much again!
It seriously keeps me going even when my eyes are protesting at 3am. Silly weak eyes, losing stamina, haha

Here's a re-introduction of this project because I finally decided on names for them (with the help of my sister) so it felt like something I should do.
Bad title though so, erm, pardon me.

    •••
"The Simple Adventures of Milton & Stella"
A series of 20 postcard sized paintings done as a personal a project to help raise funds to help provide education, food, healthcare, etc to children, funds raise through this project will be donated to The Rainbow Centre(Sri Lanka) & World Vision Singapore. And also because I made a promise to myself at the beginning of 2013 to do something meaningful on my birthday.

The paintings as the 'project title' states, shows the friendship between Milton (The fox) & Stella (The lil' monster). They don't go on epic heroic treasure finding adventures, simple activities and using tons of imagination makes an epic enough adventure for them.

The paintings are numbered as well! Every illustration has a number in it to show the order of which idea I thought of first.
And a fun little challenge for me to incorporate in the illustration.

    •••
The paintings will be up for sale later on etsy:
    27 August
    12am SGT

I'm not sure how this time zone thing works, but basically 12pm here in Singapore.

These are the original paintings I'm selling.
    25USD for each painting
Shipping is an extra 5usd for all countries.
Except Singapore which is 3usd for shipping.

All the money except the shipping cost will be donated to The Rainbow Centre(Sri Lanka) & World Vision Singapore.
So if all the paintings are sold, a total of 500USD will be raised!

I'll only be putting the paintings up for purchase until
    1st September.
I've yet to decide on a time to end the sale of anything but the plan is to do the donation of money on 1st September because, well, that's the day of my birthday.

    •••

As much as I'd love to keep all of the paintings (I become very attached to my paintings very quickly), I really hope all 20 of them will be sold because the total amount raised will be able to provide a lot of help for children in a few countries & I know the paintings will be going to good homes!
So, purchasing one, telling people about this, any way to help would be all sorts of awesome.

    •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Later during the day, I'll try my best to get a set of the postcards printed and maybe a pair of badges made. If they turn out alright, I'll put it up for pre-order.

    •••
I know I said I'll put up more photos but I haven't finish editing them yet so well, lots to do and upload later after work.
Hope you guys will forgive me for all the delays!
Here's another photo I took of my small messy table in the meantime to end the post.

    Till later then!

              Birthday Fundraiser       Cache   Translate Page
    Hiya explorers of the internet!

I'd really appreciate it if you would take the time to read this, I'm horrible with words but I do hope you'll bear with me.

    •••
    BIRTHDAY FUNDRAISER YOU SAY?

I'm celebrating my 20th birthday next month

    nothing special about it,
but at the start of the year, I told myself I wanted to do something meaningful for my birthday this year, no idea how that came about but I'm glad I decided to. I didn't know what it was I wanted to do that but I knew I want to help kids somehow. My amazing friend, Karen, did a fundraiser in May & I thought the idea is really awesome hence, was inspired to do a fundraiser as well.

    •••
ON TO WHAT I'M GOING TO DO

I'll be painting 20 A6 watercolour postcards & hopefully have them up for sale on the 25th which is about a week before my birthday.

I only sorta planned/started on this last week so I apologise I don't have more to show you guys but below are 2 that I've done. The paintings are kinda' themed around 'frienship' and will be of these two characters.

I'm still thinking of names for them but suggestions for names are more than welcomed and very much appreciated because I'm bad at picking/coming up with names!
Leave your suggestions in a comment & I'll pick the one I like!

Each painting will be numbered, thought it'll make it a fun challenge for me to incorporate that in besides trying to finish the paintings.

Paintings are 25usd each, shipping fee isn't included but I promise it will be a fixed shipping fee that will be kept to the minimum.
All the money will be donated (on the day of my birthday) to World Vision Sinagpore & The Rainbow Centre Sri Lanka. I'll make another post soon with details on how the money will be divided as I really want to help out both organizations and World Vision Singapore has a few projects/centre that we can help.

    •••
I'll update this blog as much as I can with more finished postcards, work in progress or with any details I need to tell you guys.
    •••

To you guys from twitter & instagram who are here to see the 'big reveal', I'm sorry this is actually a pretty badly planned out reveal but thank you so much for taking the time to read the chunk of words above.
BIG thank you (though I can never thank all of you enough) who've like the stuff I've drawn etc, you guys have been a really great support and a MASSIVE thank you if you will help to make my birthday this year a very meaningful one.

I really hope you guys will join me to be santa clauses (hence the bad blog title), even telling people about this would mean a lot to me, before and on my birthday because the help the children will receive will kinda be like a present to them.
Or at least, I like to think that way.

"Rumah kami hanya berupa gubuk tanpa sanitasi.

Satu rumah memiliki luas sekitar 81 meter persegi.

"Biaya rekening cukup murah," katanya.

"Semua biaya sekolah ditanggung pemerintah," kata Gulnur.

Secuil Inisiatif Belt and Road di Turugart, Wuqia
