Τη ρωτήσαμε για τη μεταποίηση. Γιατί οι παραγωγοί δεν κάνουν μεταποίηση και πετάνε την ίδια τους την παραγωγή, μόνο και μόνο επειδή δεν πωλείται;

Η ίδια τι κάνει;

Και αυτά που δεν μπορούν να μεταποιηθούν;

Αν ήσασταν κι εσείς ένας από αυτούς που πετάνε τα «άσχημα» προϊόντα, ποιο ποσοστό της παραγωγής εκτιμάτε ότι θα πεταγόταν;

OPINION: Misplaced Priorities      Cache   Translate Page
Mayor Levar Stoney’s new tax increase isn’t about fixing schools and roads, it’s about soundbites for the next election.

When it comes to their tax dollars, Richmonders are used to paying more for less.

With his new budget, Mayor Levar Stoney is asking Richmonders to pay even more through a 9-cent property tax rate increase, a utility rate increase averaging $5.82 a month per household and a 50-cent-per-pack cigarette tax. This comes after an effective tax increase at the beginning of 2019 when city property assessments rose 8.3 percent on average. These three new tax increases would put him at a total of six in just three years in office [when you include utility fee increase for bulk trash pick up, meals tax increase and tax assessment increase without adjusting the rate down to make it revenue neutral].

He says he has found all the possible efficiencies and savings possible in City Hall, and if we want better schools and roads then this is the only option. What he doesn’t mention is that he isn’t simply handing over this new tax revenue to the Richmond Public Schools and Public Works to do their thing. He instead gives only $6 million to schools and $2 million to Public Works. The rest is spread out among almost every city department except for an unlucky few like Minority Business Development, Economic Development and Housing and Community Development.

And the largest portion is assigned to the item called general fund transfer to debt service. That money would be used as leverage to take out a $48 million loan. This proposed loan wouldn’t even be used to get an even larger sum for schools and roads, but again would be spread across various projects to give everyone a little something.

This tax increase is not about schools and roads. If it were, then every available dollar would be funneled directly into those priorities.

Instead this budget tries to be everything to everyone all at once. It is a deliberate action to avoid having to make difficult decisions or do the hard work of fixing City Hall. Why roll up your sleeves when you can just raise taxes and do a bunch of different projects that can be used as sound bites in the 2020 election or the 2021 election for governor?

This municipal attention deficit disorder is par for the course in Richmond, but Stoney is taking it to new heights. This tax-increase proposal comes at the same time he is seeking to divert tax revenue to fund a billion dollar coliseum development. Coincidentally, the $21.1 million his property tax increase will generate matches the $21.1 million average annual bond payment required to make the new Coliseum a reality.

It is common knowledge in Richmond, to everyone except the mayor apparently, that City Hall lacks focus and competency. In just the last few months there have been news stories of the city’s having to pay twice to make road repairs because they weren’t done properly the first time, of an accounting error costing the city $3 million and of one employee racking up 1,900 hours of overtime. In 2017, Richmond spent $92 million on general government administration, which is more than double the per capita average for cities in Virginia. Norfolk, which has almost the same exact number of people as Richmond, spent $63 million less. Virginia Beach, with 200,000 more people than Richmond, spent $25 million less than Richmond. Basically, name a locality other than Fairfax County and Richmond spent more.

In this budget there would be $46 million in new revenue: $21.8 million in new property tax revenue from assessment value increases, $21.1 million from the property tax rate increase, and $3 million from the cigarette tax increase. Taking into account a decrease of $8 million from various sources such as the admissions tax, which is less because the mayor already has unilaterally shut down the Coliseum, there would be a total of $38 million more than last year’s budget to spend. All Stoney would have to do is take that $38 million and find $2 million in cuts and he would have the $40 million he wants to give to schools and roads in this budget without a single dime of debt.

If he managed to cut general government administration spending to the level of Virginia Beach and combine it with just the revenue from the assessment increases, we would have $46.8 million without raising taxes by 1 cent.

Instead the mayor apparently went to the Richmond city government school of financial management, where you max out the credit cards locking up all future revenue in interest payments without actually solving the most pressing issues. The mayor’s proposed path will continue the patented Richmond pattern of subpar services for our residents, while the politicians throw up their hands and complain about lack of revenue.

Stoney either doesn’t have the understanding or desire to solve the tough problems. His lack of interest is obvious from his constant trips out of town to set up his future political career and by how we have gone more than a year without seeing the details of his billion dollar coliseum idea. It is time for Richmond to stop being the capital of misplaced priorities. If Stoney thinks he has done all he can do with what we have given him, then maybe it is time we start taking applications for someone new.

150th Anniversary of the 142nd PA Volunteer Infantry      Cache   Translate Page
This week marks the sesquicentennial of the formation of 142nd PA Volunteers.

During the summer of 1862, Union victory in the War Between the States was anything but assured. In fact, until this point it was the Confederate forces who were racking up victory after victory on the battlefield. Federal losses during the Peninsular Campaign in Eastern Virginia, the Shenandoah Valley in West-Central Virginia, and New Orleans and Shiloh in the Western Theater shed a dark shadow across the White House and the Governor's mansions of the Northern states during that spring and summer.

In response to the military losses suffered by the Federal Army, the Commander in Chief, Abraham Lincoln, made a call for 150,000 additional troops.

To the Governors of the several States:
The capture of New Orleans, Norfolk, and Corinth by the national forces has enabled the insurgents to concentrate a large force at and about Richmond, which place we must take with the least possible delay; in fact, there will soon be no formidable insurgent force except at Richmond. With so large an army there, the enemy can threaten us on the Potomac and elsewhere. Until we have reestablished the national authority, all these places must be held, and we must keep a respectable force in front of Washington. But this, from the diminished strength of our Army, by sickness and casualties, renders an addition to it necessary in order to close the struggle which has been prosecuted for the last three months with energy and success. Rather than hazard the misapprehension of our military condition and of groundless alarm by a call for troops by proclamation, I have deemed it best to address you in this form. To accomplish the object stated we require without delay 150,000 men, including those recently called for by the Secretary of War. Thus reenforced our gallant Army will be enabled to realize the hopes and expectations of the Government and the people.
ABRAHAM LINCOLN.

The 142nd PA was among the hundreds of new regiments that formed across the Union in the summer of 1862 at the urging of the President.

Pennsylvania's Governor, Andrew Curtin, was among the Union Governors who replied back to President Lincoln:

Andrew Gregg Curtin

The PRESIDENT:
The undersigned, governors of States of the Union, impressed with the belief that the citizens of the States which they respectively represent are of one accord in the hearty desire that the recent successes of the Federal arms may be followed up by measures which must insure the speedy restoration of the Union, and believing that, in view of the present state of the important military movements now in progress and the reduced condition of our effective forces in the field, resulting from the usual and unavoidable casualties in the service, the time has arrived for prompt and vigorous measures to be adopted by the people in support of the great interests committed to your charge, respectfully request, if it meets with your entire approval, that you at once call upon the several States for such number of men as may be required to fill up all military organizations now in the field, and add to the armies heretofore organized such additional number of men as may, in your judgment, be necessary to garrison and hold all the numerous cities and military positions that have been captured by our armies, and to speedily crush the rebellion that still exists in several of the Southern States, thus practically restoring to the civilized world our great and good Government. All believe that the decisive moment is near at hand, and to that end the people of the United States are desirous to aid promptly in furnishing all reenforcements that you may deem needful to sustain our Government.

Andrew Gregg Curtin was the wartime Governor of Pennsylvania, serving as Republican from 1861-1867. The Bellefonte, PA native became an ally of President Linoln's in the war effort and was excellent at being able to secure funding and troops to protect his state from the Confederate troops sneaking back and forth across his southern border.

Curtin came from a political family and was a lawyer before entering the political arena himself. After the war, he became Minister to Russia, a Democratic US Congressman, and was a member of the Committee on Foriegn Affairs and the Committee on Banking and Currency.

After his time in Congress, Curtin resumed his law practiced until his death in 1894. He is buried in Union Cemetery in his hometown of Bellefonte.

                                         ---------------------------------------------------

The men of the 142nd were mustered into service at Camp Curtin, an army camp near Harrisburg, PA. Camp Curtin was established soon after Ft. Sumter was fired upon, when men throughout Pennsylvania converged on the state capital to volunteer their services. At that time, Governor Curtin ordered his state militia commander to seize the grounds of the Dauphin County Agricultural Society. Although it was supposed to be named "Camp Union", when the Camp was opened on April 18, 1861, Maj. Joseph Knipe changed the name to honor the State's Governor. Over the course of the War, over 300,000 troops passed through Camp Curtin, making it the largest Federal camp.

Even though the camp trained such large numbers of soldiers, at least two Somerset County men from Co. F were less than impressed with their short stay.

In his Saturday, August 23, 1862 diary entry, 1st Sgt Jacob Zorn wrote that "Camp Curtin (on as windy as day as this) is one of the dirtiest and dustiest places Ive ever Been theres no end to dust" (sic)

The next day's entry is no better: "Gov. CURTIN passed through Camp today and plenty of women visiting. but most of them are in my opinion doubtful characters" (sic)

Capt. Albert Heffley only briefly mentions Camp Curtin in passing, after the regiment has already been moved to Washington, DC. "Camp Curtin is a very dirty place. The boys did not like it there a bit."

Though they might not have enjoyed their time at Camp Curtin, it was the launching pad for the 142nd PVI. It is where they came together, elected officers, and received their gear to get them through the next four years of bloody and dirty conflict. This would be the most peaceful time of their military service. In only a few shorts months, bullets and cannonballs would do what they do in all wars: steal young men from their friends and family far too early.

Swift boxes in an 18th century brick wall      Cache   Translate Page
Helen Copperthwaite of Millgate, Aylsham, Norfolk lives in an 18th century maltings, with walls 1.5 bricks thick. (~350mm). At least that's what we thought when we started. She was keen to have Swifts nesting in her gable - so being something new, we decided to have a go at it.

Helen kindly laid on a cherry picker, as it may not have been sensible to work all day on ladders at that height.

Our idea was to remove a header and stretcher from the outer wall, then drill out any brick remaining in the middle producing a cavity 350mm long and 85mm high leaving a half brick between the nesting place and the room inside.

We would then cut a 40mm wide piece off the outer stretcher, replace the header with a Cambridge System half brick entrance piece and we would end up with a very nice internal nest space 350mm x 185mm x 85mm.

Where the wall was 1.5 bricks thick this went very well according to plan:

Stretcher, header and bricks in centre of wall removed
Nest concave inserted - bedded down in mortar
Bill Murrells pointing up the inserted components
Sliced stretcher and entrance piece mortared in.
The mortar will dry to a good match with the old mortar
However, unknown to us, in some parts of the wall, the inner bricks had been removed and replaced by studs (timber) and insulation, so we had a wall  only 1-brick thick (~225mm). However, in the places that we broke through to the insulation there was always a stud against the wall. So we screwed a rectangular piece of plywood to the stud, completely blocking any access to the insulation, leaving a nest space 350mm x 175mm x 85mm, similar to the space above. We think this is a viable solution to any wall that is just 1 brick thick.

The final result was 5 new nest places:

5 new internal boxes embedded in the wall.
To demonstrate the principle of how we fitted boxes in the 1-brick thick parts of the wall, these illustrations might help.

Successful Project with a Derbyshire school and housing agency      Cache   Translate Page
This is a good story in the year of Swift Awareness Week
by Nick Brown

Last autumn a meeting was arranged by the Derbyshire Swift Conservation Project with Rykneld Homes with additional support from Derbyshire Wildlife Trust. Rykneld manages the social housing for NE Derbyshire District Council.

An Ibstock Swift brick
While most of their work is maintaining the 8000 houses they have already, occasionally they build new properties. Jude Milburn, Rykneld’s Community Involvement Officer, attended the meeting and took up the Swift cause. Liaising closely with us, he worked to get internal Swift boxes put in nine of the 50 houses in a new social housing development in North Wingfield, close to the village school (with some bat boxes in addition).

He also arranged for the Project to meet Rachael Peacock, the head teacher at the newly built village school. We explained how Swifts would make a great learning topic for the children – an idea she embraced enthusiastically. In addition, Jude gave her six Swift boxes to put up on the school. On 20th April, Rykneld organised a small ceremony to mark the completion of the new houses.

Swift boxes in 6 country colours
On a lovely sunny afternoon, thirty children from the school joined in by painting their six boxes in the colours of the flags of some of the countries the birds fly over on migration to and from Africa (Spain, Morocco, Ghana etc). This novel idea was first dreamed up by Ian Carstairs in Harleston, Norfolk so we can’t claim it as our own!

The children worked enthusiastically and the boxes will be put up on the school as soon as possible.

There are Swifts nesting in the village and we hope Rachael will be able to get the children to ask their parents if they know where, prior to us doing some survey work in the summer.

In addition, some of the children from the school will be moving into the new houses. Should they move into the ones with Swift boxes, Jude will ensure that they are made aware of their boxes and the reasons they were installed. Ideally we hope Jude will be able to engage with all the new tenants and to that end we will be providing him with copies of the new AfS leaflet and booklet to hand out.

Powerball Jackpot 11th Largest in History; $448 Million for Wednesday      Cache   Translate Page

Nebraska Lottery Encourages Players to Play Responsibly

Lincoln, NE – March 12, 2019 – A string of drawings without a jackpot winner have grown the estimated Powerball® jackpot to $448 million for the Wednesday drawing. Because of the high jackpot, the Nebraska Lottery reminds customers to play responsibly.

The Powerball jackpot starts at $40 million and continues to grow by at least $10 million each drawing until it is won. There have been 21 consecutive Powerball drawings since December 29 without a jackpot winner. This run has grown the estimated jackpot for the Wednesday, March 13 drawing to $448 million or $271.7 million with the cash option selected. This is the 11th largest Powerball jackpot in the history of the game.

While no jackpot-winning tickets have been sold yet in 2019, the current jackpot run has produced other Powerball winners in Nebraska. In the March 6 drawing, a $1,000,000 winning ticket was sold at Hy-Vee Gas, 828 E 23rd Street in Fremont. A $50,000 winning ticket was sold at Hy-Vee, 120 East Norfolk Avenue in Norfolk for the March 2 drawing, and a $150,000 Powerball with Power Play winning ticket was sold at the Cubby’s in Waverly for the January 19 drawing.

Ten jackpots ranging from $2.5 million to $365 million have been won in Nebraska since the Nebraska Lottery began offering Powerball in July of 1994. The largest Powerball jackpot won in Nebraska occurred in February 2006 when a group of eight coworkers at the ConAgra Foods ham and corned beef plant in Lincoln split a $365 million jackpot.

Powerball jackpot winners have two options for collecting their payment: 30 annuity payments or one cash payment at present value. The annuity option provides annual payments that increase each year. The present cash value is less than the advertised jackpot, which is based on the 29-year annuity option. Winning Powerball numbers are announced every Wednesday and Saturday at 9:59 p.m. Central Time and posted at the Nebraska Lottery website, nelottery.com.

Play Responsibly

Because of the high Powerball jackpot, the Nebraska Lottery encourages customers to play within their means. “It’s important for Nebraska Lottery players to remember that no matter how large the jackpot is, the odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million,” said Lottery Director Brian Rockey. “Your odds of winning remain the same, regardless of how many tickets are purchased or how many people play.” If you or someone you know has a problem with compulsive gambling please call the Nebraska Problem Gambling Help Line toll free at 833-BETOVER (238-6837).

The mission of the Nebraska Lottery is to generate proceeds for good causes while providing quality entertainment options to Nebraskans. Over $717 million has been raised for the Nebraska Lottery’s beneficiary funds since the Lottery began in 1993. All 93 counties in Nebraska have benefited from projects funded with these Nebraska Lottery proceeds.

Event Update For 2019-03-11      Cache   Translate Page

http://jumpingjackflashhypothesis.blogspot.com/2012/02/jumping-jack-flash-hypothesis-its-gas.html

The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

http://jumpingjackflashhypothesis.blogspot.com/2012/02/jumping-jack-flash-hypothesis-its-gas.html

The plane crashed six minutes after departure, plowing into the ground at Hejere near Bishoftu, or Debre Zeit, some 31 miles outside Addis Ababa, at 8:44 a.m. There was no immediate indication why the plane went down in clear weather while on a flight to Nairobi, the capital of neighboring Kenya."

We left Atlantic Yacht Basin at 7;00 AM and immediately went through the Great Bridge drawbridge and into the Great Bridge Lock with about a 2' drop.  This is the 6th lock and I believe the final lock in our Loop adventure -- total for the entire trip is now 157 locks.

Today was gray and overcast with 70 degree temperatures.   We stopped at Top Rack Marina for fuel which was $3.38 per gallon -- the cheapest fuel we've found this year.  They have an excellent restaurant which we hope to try on our return trip south.  We traveled north through Norfolk with much commercial traffic and, of course, the Navy Base.  We were able to be followed by AIS via www.marinetraffic.com which listed Say Good-Bye and the details and we were depicted by a pink arrow as you could follow our course.  We had to laugh when our friend, Pete, emailed to say "Look out for Miss Gill coming up on your stern faster than you're going!"  He was tracking us.  Way cool!  We traveled 29 miles today and it was really interesting going through Norfolk.

Striper seems a lot better today. She's eating and drinking a lot more and really working us over for treaties, baked ham and corned beef, but that's okay. We're glad she's starting to perk up again.

We arrived at the Hampton, VA Public Marina which is practically in the center of town and was $1.25 per foot plus $3 for electric/water. This is very reasonable for such a great location.  I was tired and took a power nap this afternoon and left the captain to his own devices.  He walked up the street and had a panini for lunch and took Striper out and about.  Later he told me that there was manicurist just up the street, but he thought I really needed a nap and wouldn't feel up to a pedicure.  IS HE KIDDING???  Had I known, I might have hobbled up the street for that!

Our friend, Pete McHugh came by to pick us up for dinner.  He took us on a driving tour of historic Fort Monroe that still has an active moat -- meaning, the moat is intact and still has water in it.  He regaled us with its interesting history and its uses today.  I'd like to walk through it on our return trip.  We have a lot of things to do on our "return trip" -- I need to start making a list.  But I might add, there may not be a return trip if we sell Say Good-Bye.  We have several interested parties so we'll see how things go. But if we bring her back to Florida in the fall, I can come up with a big, fat itinerary of places to go and people to see.

Pete only gave us 99 options for dinner, and we ended up dining at one of his and Dee's favorite spots, "Six" -  a little tapas place in Phoebus on the outskirts of Hampton.  The service was good and our dinner was excellent.  We were sorry to miss Dee -- but she had Mother's Day plans to go to a play with her son and I'm sure she had a wonderful evening.

Thank you, Pete, for a fun visit, as usual, and for treating us to an excellent dinner.  Dinner was delicious and the company, delightful.
