Mill City Summer OperaLaini DevinPDF icon MCSO Teaching Artist Job Posting.pdf (70.38 KB)Email/contacthttps://millcitysummeropera.org/

Position: Teaching Artist

Reports to: Education Program Director

Status: Seasonal/Contract

Mill City Summer Opera is seeking Teaching Artists with professional vocal and teaching experience for the upcoming 2019 season. Employment may begin as early as April 2019, with most hours in late June/July 2019.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Mill City Summer Opera collaborates with community partners to deliver our Opera is Epic workshop program to young adults grades K-12 with little to no exposure to the arts. Through the workshop series, youth see themselves—often for the first time—as part of a broader artistic community. This exposure has the potential to diversify future opera companies, inspires participants to pursue careers as artists, and instills an appreciation and understanding of opera and theatre from a young age.

We invite students and their family members from our program partnerships to attend our final dress rehearsal performance and young audiences performance and experience live opera under the stars. Sharing this cultural experience together serves as a starting point for rich conversations about how opera relates to their lives.

With these partnerships, our teaching artists help students from a variety of cultures and backgrounds make connections on how theatre and opera can help build empathy, foster self-confidence, and build vital skills in their daily lives. This approach allows us to go beyond the workshops and performances, and provide a basis for building community around arts.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create and deliver a customized curriculum that achieves Mill City Summer Opera’s learning goals.
  • Develop learning activities in the following arts disciplines: music, drama, movement, and music theatre history.
  • Present material relating to the current Mill City Summer Opera Main Stage production (Summer 2019 - Così fan tutte)
  • Create and deliver customized classroom lesson plans for each session with the other teaching artists.
  • Collaborate with piano accompanists as needed to rehearse musical selections before the final presentation.
  • Continually assess the progress of program participants through formal and informal assessment strategies.
  • Attend final dress rehearsal and young audiences performance at Mill City Summer Opera with participating programs (not required - but ideal).
  • Attend meetings and rehearsals as may be required for program development.
  • Communicate regularly with Mill City Summer Opera Education Program Director.

LOCATION

This position functions primarily in Minneapolis and surrounding cities, with occasional events at the Mill City Museum where Mill City Summer Opera currently performs.

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors degree in vocal performance, music education, or related field
  • Knowledge of and passion for opera
  • Professional vocal performance experiences in opera or musical theater
  • Experience working with groups of children grades K-12 in diverse educational settings
  • Experience developing and delivering lesson and/or rehearsal plans
  • Ability to solve problems with creativity and flexibility
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Comfortable communicating with school teachers and administrators
  • Flexible weekday schedule/ability to commit to set schedule determined in advance
  • Must have reliable transportation

COMPENSATION

  • Teaching Artists are hired as independent contractors for Mill City Summer Opera
  • Pay rates are hourly and vary based on the type of program being delivered and experience
  • Employment may begin as early as April 2019 and will continue through July 2019 with potential to extend into Fall of 2019 and renew for the next season

APPLICATION PROCEDURES

Interested applicants should submit cover letters and resumes to laini@millcitysummeropera.org by April 1st, 2019

We Love MSP: A Guide to 50th & France

There’s no place like home. Sometimes, it takes a trip away to remember what you have in your own backyard. Now that I’m home with the baby and doing less traveling, I’ve become reaquainted with all there is to offer in Minneapolis/St. Paul. We often get emails from readers from the coasts who find themselves with a plane ticket to my adoptive hometown. While I have a list of my go-to restaurants, shops, and sites, our two cities are actually pretty large: about 20 miles of quaint neighborhoods, parks, lakes, and downtown blocks to explore.

The United City-States Of America, Mapped - An Experiment In Redividing The Country      Cache   Translate Page

Authored by Nolan Gray via Medium.com,

From ancient Greece to Renaissance Italy to the Four Asian Tigers, city-states have always punched above their weight. They’ve driven culture forward, facilitated global commerce, and charged ahead of their nation-bound peers.

Indeed, cities  - and the metropolitan regions that orbit around them  -  make sense as a political and economic unit. The key services we depend on government to do, from building infrastructure to ensuring public safety, are mostly handled by cities. And contrary to earlier predictions, the forces of globalization and the rise of the information economy have only made cities more important as economic engines and innovation hubs. It’s no surprise, then, that cities — and their mayors — are increasingly finding their voices in a world previously dominated by nations and international entities.

Unfortunately, the way the United States is structured today undermines this trend by privileging states as the key political entity. State boundaries in these modern times are typically arbitrary and often no longer reflect any meaningful political, cultural, or economic reality. Some U.S. cities, both big and small, manage to straddle state borders (think Texarkana or Bristol) while others run right up to the state edge but sharply hug the border (think Cincinnati or St. Louis). And a number of states are inexplicably fragmented because their seat of government is very different from their most populous town (think New York City/Albany and Chicago/Springfield). This often results in excessive fragmentationunproductive competition, and a near total lack of regional land-use and transportation planning. We all suffer as a result.

Both to satisfy my own curiosity and set out a vision for what a city-oriented United States might look like, I decided to make a map that dispensed with the continental 48 states and instead divvied up the land into 100 city-states.

As a process-obsessed city planner, I started by listing the top 150 metropolitan statistical areas in the continental United States. This seemed like the natural base for any potential city-states as MSAs reflect economic integration. Next, I mixed in combined statistical areas, which factor together adjacent metro- and micropolitan areas. I cut the list to the top 100 units by population. (Congratulations to Lancaster, Pennsylvania — the smallest unit to make the cut!)

Then came the mapping. I used shapefiles provided by the Census to make “city-state cores” on a single map using GIS, a tool used for map making and spatial analysis. By using more data and selecting certain attributes, I assigned each county to a city-state core. To finish it up, I cleaned up awkward and nonsensical boundaries with some manual adjustment.

The final product was this map, and it led me to several takeaways:

The eastern United States is like medieval Europe.

As of 2010, the population center of the United States is somewhere in the middle of Missouri. It’s been moving westward, needless to say, but also south over time. This mostly jives with this map: The United States east of the Kansas-Missouri line is a dynamic hodgepodge of small, densely populated city-states. The economies and cultures of places like New York and Philadelphia, Charlotte and Greensboro, and Fort Wayne and South Bend will likely always be intimately intermingled. West of this line, excluding California and Texas, the United States is largely underpopulated, with cities like Denver, Omaha, and Boise playing an outsized role — economically and culturally — in their respective regions.

My home state of Kentucky is shattered.

Let’s face it: Kentucky is incoherent as a cultural-political entity. The Louisville metropolitan area and the northern Kentucky suburbs of Cincinnati are essentially southern reaches of the Rust Belt. The state’s east and southeast have more in common with West Virginia, including a shared Appalachian heritage. Western and southwestern Kentucky feel much more conventionally Southern. All of this is largely captured by how the state is divided up. Not accidentally, the only purely Kentucky city-state produced — Lexington — captures most of what Kentucky is best known for: University of Kentucky basketball, the first Kentucky Fried Chicken, most of the major bourbon distilleries, the Daniel Boone National Forest, and the state’s famous Bluegrass horse farm region.

Maine and Minnesota are basically already city-states.

Only two city-states capture the entirety of a current U.S. state: Portland, which captures Maine and parts of New Hampshire, and Minneapolis-St. Paul, which captures Minnesota and parts of Wisconsin, South Dakota, and three-quarters of North Dakota. Portland barely made the cut; in an actual fragmentation scenario, I could see most of Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine falling under a Boston city-state. Minneapolis-St. Paul, however, makes sense. Its influence sweeps across the northern Midwest, as evidenced in films like Fargo. Some western metro areas in New Mexico and Utah nearly made the cut, but their southern regions were nipped by El Paso and Las Vegas, respectively.

Some states would disappear entirely.

A handful of states in this new map are completely covered by the city-states of their former neighboring states. Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, and Vermont would all basically be gone. Delaware and Rhode Island both have great cities — Wilmington and Providence — but both would be unambiguously absorbed by their monolithic neighbors — Philadelphia and Boston, respectively. The upper Mountain West as well as New Hampshire and Vermont simply lack large cities.

City-states of tomorrow may boom at any time.

As states like Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota continue to experience explosive population growth, they will inevitably give rise to their own great cities. For all we know, Billings, Fargo, and Sioux Falls could emerge as urban powerhouses in the 21st century, not unlike nearby Minneapolis, Denver, and Salt Lake City did in the 20th century.

An odd oversight in our federal system is that it’s basically impossible for states to split, join, or shift around their borders. Outside of a few weird cases — such as West Virginia — basically all new states have come from newly settled land. As new city-states emerge in places like the Mountain West, how would they be incorporated into this system? Would the arrangement be capped at 100 city-states? Alternatively, could states combine as their economies and development slowly blends, as could very well happen with small city-states like Lancaster, Toledo, and Fresno? It’s a fun thought experiment.

*  *  *

In a time when we aren’t often drawing up new borders for established countries like the U.S., it’s interesting to think “what if.” What might be the political implications of a system like this? At the outset, a system of city-states could help to achieve economies of scale in providing local services like libraries and parks, saving taxpayers money while improving service quality.

But they could also overcome some of the prisoner’s dilemma problems associated with policies like housing, schools, and subsidies. In our current system of municipal fragmentation, it’s easy for NIMBYs (“Not in My Back Yard” campaigns) to block the construction of new housing in prospering areas and keep low- and moderate-income students out of high-quality schools districts. A unified city-state could overcome some of these issues, taking the broader perspective and equitably distributing the burdens and benefits of growth.

A city-state restructuring could also have deep implications for national politics. One of the key takeaways of the 2016 presidential election is the mounting urban-rural political divide, with voters in cities and the countryside growing increasingly disconnected and antagonistic toward one another. (At the bottom of this piece is a map of how the city-states likely would have voted.) Insomuch as a city-state scenario would bundle Americans based on broadly similar economic, social, cultural backgrounds, it could encourage both sides to seriously contend with with the needs and preferences of their neighbors.

Of course, at this stage, it’s all speculation. How would you have drawn city-state boundaries differently? What do you think would be the political implications?

This Austrian village has world's smallest metro system — and the highest      Cache   Translate Page

  • The world's shortest (0.8 mi) and highest (4,680 ft) metro runs beneath an Austrian ski resort.
  • Constructed in 1985, the Dorfbahn keeps Serfaus traffic-free.
  • Capacity will increase from 1,600 to 3,000 passengers per hour this spring.

Postcard-perfect

The weather's good for skiing today in Serfaus, Austria. Snow conditions are listed as "powdery," with depths of 170 cm at the summit and 30 cm at the base. All 68 ski lifts and all 198 slopes in the wider Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis area are open.

Wedged on a plateau 4,680 feet (1,427 m) above the Inn valley in between the peaks of the Furgler, Schönjoch and Pfroslkopf mountains, the tiny Tyrolean village of Serfaus, with just over 1,000 permanent residents, is a postcard-perfect example of alpine charm.

Just last month, Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis was elected the world's second-best ski area (1). But there's another reason to visit Serfaus. A few feet underneath the cow sheds on its traffic-free Main Street runs the world's shortest (and highest) metro system, the Dorfbahn.

Indeed, at the bottom of the village, among the pristine peaks and meadows, an incongruous logo sticks out: a white U in a blue square, marking the entrance to an U-Bahn (underground metro). That sight is otherwise only encountered in Berlin, Vienna and other large German-speaking cities.

Radical action

This is Parkplatz ('Parking Lot') the first of four stops on the Dorfbahn ("Village Metro"). Just a third of a mile (500 metres) down the road is station Kirche ('Church'), and then one more stop at Zentrum ("Town Centre") gets you to Seilbahn ("Cable Car"), the end of the line. From here, skiers have access to the more than 125 miles (200 km) of ski slopes in the area accessible from Serfaus and the neighbouring villages of Ladis and Fiss.

Total length of the Serfaus Metro: no more than 0.8 miles (1,280 m). The Dorfbahn is served by a three-carriage hovertrain. Following the completion of renovations later this year, travel time along the single-line track will be reduced from 11 to 9 minutes and hourly capacity will increase from 1,600 to 3,000 passengers.

So how exactly did a metro get stuck under such a tiny alpine village?

Serfaus started gaining renown as an alpine resort in the 1930s, but mass tourism only took off from the 1950s. By the 1970s, the town's main street was so swamped each winter with traffic heading up to the cable cars that the council took radical action.

Free of charge

Because Serfaus essentially is a dead-end street, the town council decided to ban cars to a parking lot at the bottom of the village. From there, buses took them to the cable car at the other end of town. Which worked fine for a while. But as Serfaus continued to attract more tourists each year, those buses started clogging up the town too. In 1983, the town council decided on a better solution: taking all that traffic underground, restoring peace, quiet and fresh air to the town above.

In 1985, the town's main drag, the Dorfbahnstrasse was dug up for the construction of a tunnel 10.6 feet (3.24 m) wide and 11.5 feet (3.52 m) high. Total elevation difference is 66 feet (20.1 m), with a maximum gradient of 5.35 percent. The Dorfbahn started operation at the end of the same year — free of charge (as it still is). Except for access to hotels, cars are buses are now banned from the town centre.

The Serfaus metro is served by a single hovertrain, also variously known as an aerotrain, tracked hovercraft or air-cushion vehicle. The cable-drawn vehicle uses lift pads instead of steel wheels in order to eliminate rolling resistance and enable high performance. Since it only needs a paved surface instead of actual track, the system is relatively cheap and easy to install and maintain.

Hovertrains are not in commercial use anywhere, but they do operate at some airports (e.g. Skymetro in Zürich, the Minneapolis–St. Paul Airport Trams, Cincinnati Airport People Mover) and for other internal transport at other institutions (e.g. Getty Center Tram in L.A., the Hospital Tram System in Huntsville, Alabama).

New and improved, but still smallest

In 2017, after 32 years and almost 30 million passengers, a three-stage, $28-million renovation programme was initiated at the Parkplatz and Seilbahn station.

Last year, station Zentrum was substantially enlarged and station Kirche was moved 80 metres to the east. It now has three levels, with access via escalators and elevators. Barriers have been removed, making it easier for all passengers to hop on and off. Newly-designed aerodynamic carriages in silver and red (pictured) will go into service in the spring of this year. The new trains will be remotely controlled, eliminating the need for drivers.

The line will not be extended, however, and no new branch lines are expected any time soon: the Dorfbahn in Serfaus is therefore likely to remain the world's shortest metro for some time to come.

Transcript: Community Broadband Bits Episode 347      Cache   Translate Page

This is the transcript for episode 347 of the Community Broadband Bits podcast. In this episode, Christopher speaks with comedian and YouTuber Ron Placone about telecom policy, net neutrality, and Ron's efforts to bring municipal broadband to Pasadena, California. Listen to the podcast, or read the transcript below.

Ron Placone: The idea of community is a very uplifting one because that's where you can really, I think, make some positive change. You know, change doesn't happen from the top to the bottom; it happens from the bottom up.

Lisa Gonzalez: Welcome to episode 347 of the Community Broadband Bits podcast from the Institute for Local Self-Reliance. I'm Lisa Gonzalez. This week, Christopher interviews comedian and municipal broadband advocate Ron Placone. Ron is a busy guy and in addition to his own career making people laugh from the stage, his YouTube channel, and a streaming show, Get Your News On With Ron, he's a regular on the Jimmy Dore Show. This time though, we've got Ron. He's here to talk about his experiences with municipal networks, network neutrality, and related policies. He and Christopher discuss why network neutrality is important to him and to other people whose lives revolve around a free and open Internet. Ron describes how he's using his platform to help spread the word about both network neutrality and municipal broadband, both in his hometown and he hopes to a wider audience. Be sure to check out his YouTube channel and listen to his show, Get Your News On With Ron, on iTunes or other streaming services. You can also check out ronplacone.com for more information on how to follow and connect with Ron. Now here's Christopher with comedian and broadband advocate Ron Placone.

Christopher Mitchell: Welcome to another episode of the Community Broadband Bits podcast. This is Chris Mitchell with the Institute for Local Self-Reliance up in Minneapolis, Minnesota, talking with Ron Placone, the comedian and YouTube personality that does Get Your News On With Ron. Welcome to the show, Ron.

Ron Placone: Thanks for having me. I've been a listener for a while now, so good to be here.

Christopher Mitchell: Yeah, well I've heard from a few people lately that that I should be hamming up the intro, so I feel like this is a part of the show that people are starting to look forward to — at least some people are. Everyone who hates it should let me know too. So let me just start by asking you a little bit about your background. You're a comedian and a YouTube personality. What is that like?

Ron Placone: Well, it's a lot of fun. You know, I love doing both things. I was a road comic for many years and then when I moved here to Los Angeles, I started getting involved with this show called the Jimmy Dore Show. And I'm, I'm still, you know, at the Jimmy Dore Show, and I do a lot of stuff with the young Turks, and then I do my own show, Get Your News On With Ron. Simultaneously, issues of net neutrality and stuff like that has always been a very important cause to me. It's something that I've always been interested in and it's something I'm always learning about, since about 2004 when all those movements kinda got started. And of course, when we finally got it on the books in 2015, that was a good thing, and then of course Trump's FCC has repealed it. I know your listeners are already fluent in a lot of this stuff, but I've always seen muni broadband, which, you know, in the past few years I've gotten more turned on to as many people have, as sort of the permanent fix. Let's take the Internet out of the hands of these corporate entities and into the hands of cities and communities. As an online content creator, I see a lot of the importance in this for many reasons, but you know, a reason that really hits home with me a lot is just the idea of a vibrant and flourishing independent media, especially as of recent with the AT&T and Time Warner merger being okayed by the courts, which I'm sure you've already talked about. But you know, with that happening — I mean, look, AT&T owns CNN. Comcast owns MSNBC. So now you have these two big cable behemoths that control your access to the Internet, don't need to follow net neutrality anymore, and they own two big media outlets. This is not a healthy scenario for independent online-based media. Because our media structure in the United States is so horrible — you don't need to agree or disagree; that's that's my opinion — but because it's so horrible, this is a pretty big issue. And I think a lot of people — it's one of those things, sometimes people are passive and then all of a sudden we lose the medium, and people think it's so hard to believe that we're going to face this situation where videos don't load on the Internet or it costs 30 bucks extra a month to access your Twitter or you know the Internet looks like Cable Television 2.0. we can't fathom that happening. Well guess what? In 1996 they couldn't fathom what happened to radio happening.

Christopher Mitchell: Right. Sure.

Ron Placone: They had no idea anything like that would happen, and then because of the Telecommunications Act in '96, they showed up one day and no one had a job anymore. So it can happen and once you lose the medium, you don't get it back.

Christopher Mitchell: And to be clear, what you're talking about with the radio is we had a lot of locally run stations and then they all got bought and turned into robot DJs over a period of 10 years or so. But there was this moment in which we saw a lot of the impact of that consolidation happening all at once.

Ron Placone: And it had to do with the Telecommunications Act of 1996. Of course, technology did play a role too. I'm not going to make it out like that had nothing to do with it, but the big gutting of radio was largely due to that piece of policy because nobody paid attention to it.

Christopher Mitchell: No, that's true. Now, I have to say, first of all, you should be much nicer to AT&T. They now own HBO, so you know, you want to get your own act on there.

Ron Placone: Good point. I face this conundrum every day.

Christopher Mitchell: Most of the people that I know, even talking about net neutrality, wouldn't necessarily know to draw the radio issues back to the '96 telecom act. Were you a technical person? Are you someone who just — I mean, what is your background that you know about the '96 act, you know, something a lot of people just have no idea what year that would have passed.

Ron Placone: I'm a big media policy guy. I mean, when I was in college there was actually a media reform group, and I was in it. I was really involved with community radio, and I actually got into stand up because I wanted to be on the radio. Like I was like, I want to do talk radio, and then I read some article that said stand up comedy is a good way to get into that, which is still to this day true. And so, I started doing standup, and then I got bit by that bug and became a touring comedian for years and years. Now I guess it has come full circle cause the Jimmy Dore Show is syndicated via radio, so I guess technically it did come full circle. So yeah, and I went to graduate school for communication and I studied media policy. Like, that was my area of focus. So I read a lot of Dr Bob McChesney. I read a lot of Chomsky. I read a lot of, you know, Saul Alinsky and stuff like that. So the media reform movement has always been part of my life too. I mean, I used to go to those conferences. I was just sort of, you know, I had in my own little YouTube channel that was not very big at all. I wasn't, you know, doing anything on a bigger platform at that point, but I was still showing up there and I was learning. So I think that what happened with net neutrality or what is still happening with net neutrality — we're still fighting — that was kind of the telecommunications act of our generation. You know, this time, fortunately we were paying attention and we're fighting back. They didn't fight back until it was too little, too late because, you know, I think everybody — we had the school president that played the saxophone, everyone's sort of sleeping, and he just kind of pushed through this horrible act.

Christopher Mitchell: Some of my listeners — and I would say that I would have to give this deeper thought — I think would say that the act actually in many ways was quite good. It was the lack of enforcement and the way the courts then later interpreted aspects of it that really, when it comes to broadband, allowed, the idea of having one network that had multiple, shared ISPs on it. That was kind of envisioned by the act. And then later was ruled back both by Clinton and by the George W. Bush administration.

Ron Placone: Are you referring to the telecom act?

Christopher Mitchell: Yeah, the '96 act. I mean, the idea was that the telephone wires would be shared and would have multiple ISPs, and they'd have to lease out their infrastructure. You know, so I would say that parts of the '96 act were bad, parts of it I think were conceived well but then implemented poorly and the courts took it apart unfortunately.

Ron Placone: Well, yeah, a lot of the verbiage in it sounds great. I mean, if you actually read the thing, you're like, oh, this is alright. But then you kind of read between the lines and you see what it really does and now we see the effects of it, you know. And whether it was completely intentional or not — I tend to think it was —

Christopher Mitchell: But that's led you to your solution, I think, right? So I mean, you're here identifying very real problems and you're looking to local solutions, I think in part — and this is maybe reading into you my analysis, which is that we can't trust the federal government to get it right anyway, so let's figure out how to do it locally.

Ron Placone: Well I think — and a lot of that kind of stems from, you know, I produce a lot of political comedy content, so I pay a lot of attention to the news. My show is called Get Your News On With Ron, where people literally send me news and we talk about it together. I let the viewers decide what we talk about. So I do spend a lot of time, you know, diving into electoral politics and trying to make it funny. And sometimes that can be incredibly discouraging just in general because it's not a very happy landscape, Chris, as I'm sure you're aware. So, the idea of community is a very uplifting one because that's where you can really, I think, make some positive change. You know, change doesn't happen from the top to the bottom. It happens from the bottom up. And I always tell listeners, I'm like, now is the time to kind of pick a lane and get started, you know, cause that's what we gotta do.

Christopher Mitchell: So what are you doing?

Ron Placone: So my lane's municipal broadband. You know, I decided this is an issue I've been passionate about for years and years. I am not a tech person at all, but I do know a thing or two about the policies behind it. I have been studying the cases, not to the extent that that you have, but I learned a lot from you guys and then I try to share it. I started a playlist on my YouTube channel just dedicated to municipal broadband and net neutrality. Our interview's in there when you did my show. And that's helped people start kind of informal task forces in their community. I get emails on the regular of people saying, "Hey Ron, I got my local DSA chapter on board with municipal broadband. It's one of our missions now," "Hey Ron, my mayor is really into municipal broadband and I made my mayor watch your entire playlist."

Christopher Mitchell: That's great.

Ron Placone: Well, it's kind of ironic because some of my listeners have had more success than I've had.

Christopher Mitchell: Sure.

Ron Placone: And I'm like, man, soon you're going to be teaching me.

Christopher Mitchell: Right, well it must be frustrating because Pasadena already has fiber. And I mean in the southern California area, you've got a few places that are going full municipal Fiber-to-the-Home, but you've got a bunch of them that are at least doing something in terms of connecting businesses. But you know, if I remember correctly, Pasadena is only doing dark fiber, right?

Ron Placone: So what's going on with Pasadena: I showed up at a city hall — and this is all documented on my playlist — I showed up to a city hall, spoke on behalf of the cause for municipal broadband. I brought a nice chunk of people with me and they all did too. So it got put on a city agenda, so we were like, that's great. They did this study that I think their intentions were good, but it was not a very thorough study. And they used one case study, the case study of Beverly Hills, which is, you know, one of the wealthiest towns in the country and what Beverly Hills is doing is straight up Fiber-to-the-Home for residents because they can afford it. They're Beverly Hills. So that's what they're doing. So they were like, "This is what Beverly Hills is doing. This is how much it's costing them. Here is that multiplied by the mileage of Pasadena. We can't afford this. I guess we're just going to count on the corporations." So they gave us this presentation. The word net neutrality wasn't even in it, so I went up and responded. There was like a response period for citizens. I responded, which that is also on my playlist, where I said, "Hey guys, I appreciate you doing this and taking the time to put this together, but you looked at literally one case study and you didn't look at any others. I find it hard to believe that Chattanooga, Tennessee, has some gold token Pasadena can't have, or Sandy Oregon or Monticello, Minnesota or, you know, Longmont, Colorado or Fort Collins, Colorado. I find it hard to believe all those places can do something. Or Charlemont, Massachusetts. They're a town of 7,000. Or Oberlin, Ohio. Do I need to go on?" I was like, "I don't think all these places have some gold token that Pasadena can't have. I find it hard to believe."

Christopher Mitchell: That is literally one of my most frustrating pet peeves is that idea of we either have to do nothing or we have to find the most expensive possible way of doing something, and those are the alternatives.

Ron Placone: And you guys are providing a resource for people. You guys provide that service to figure out the best method, and I'm working really hard to get you guys out here. I really want that to happen. I know, like, the hesitation isn't on your guys's end. It's on my city's end, and that's what I'm fighting for. So, I recently sent the city, a letter, just a nice letter, and I urged them to join Next Century.

Christopher Mitchell: Next Century Cities.

Ron Placone: Yes. I urged them to join that organization, and one thing I could use as leverage is I was just like, hey you guys mentioned all of our towns. Because they were like, "Hey, Burbank's not going to try to do municipal broadband, so we're not either." I said, "Hey, guess what? Burbank's a member of Next Century Cities. Beverly Hills is a member. Santa Monica is a member. Los Angeles proper is a member." So I said, "Hey guys, it costs nothing to join. We have nothing to lose, everything to gain. We just need basically the signature of a city official." By the way, this is something I feel is necessary to point out, when we started showing up to city hall, all of a sudden they made city hall an hour earlier. If someone wants to say it's a coincidence, they can. I'm going to say it's because we kept showing up, but . . .

Christopher Mitchell: So is that more difficult for you then? Is that what you're saying?

Ron Placone: Yeah, because it's at 5:00 p.m. now. It used to be at, like, 6:30, and then all of a sudden they were like, it's 5:00 now. And it's like, gee, what happened? And it wasn't just us. I mean, there's been some issues of police brutality in Pasadena. I don't know if you've seen it in the news, so a lot of people were protesting and stuff like that, which probably more of the reason, but so they made city hall and hour earlier. So it'ss part of the reason why I haven't been going much. Now it's really hard to get there.

Christopher Mitchell: How did you have a group of people at your back when you started going to city hall? Because I think this is one of the first questions we get from folks is, I feel like I'm alone in my community — what can I do?

Ron Placone: We announced it on the Jimmy Dore Show.

Christopher Mitchell: Yeah, so that's nice if you have that available.

Ron Placone: Well that is, and I tell people that I want to help any way I can and one of the ways I can is I do have access to some reasonably sizable platforms, not only — and Jimmy's been very supportive of this. He knows it's something I care about a lot. You know, a lot of the net neutrality and municipal broadband content that the show puts out are things I produce, and he's always been supportive of doing those segments. So I do stuff there and then I also do stuff on my own channel, Get Your News On With Ron, which has a lot of information on it. It's not as big, but it has a lot of information on it. And then I also do a collaboration with Mike Figueredo of the Humanist Report, another really good YouTube personality, and he's based up in Portland. The northwest has a lot going on with muni broadband, as you're aware, and so he's kind of, you know, really digging out there. So, we're doing what we can with our platforms to try to amplify this.

Christopher Mitchell: Have you tried doing any in person events? I mean, I know that you're aware of the Broadband and Beers that Fort Collins had done that worked for them and, and we'd like to make that happen nationwide. Just finding the time to try to create that sort of a movement is difficult. But have you tried doing a physical event aside from city council meeting?

Ron Placone: So I have my comedy tour, which is called the Progressive Comedy tour, and I do it with another comedian named Graham Elwood. And it's just a stand up tour. Like, we're both regulars on the Jimmy Dore Show. We both have our own shows — I have Get Your News On With Ron; he has a show called Political Vigilante — and we've been going across the country. And I will say, every single show — and I've always directed people to your website, Chris — every show, there's been at least two or three people that come up to me that said, "Hey, I'm trying to get municipal broadband here."

Christopher Mitchell: Oh that's cool.

Ron Placone: Which is really fricking cool. And so, you know, we've been doing these shows, people have been coming out, and these are people that really want to do something in their community. You know, we're all so busy these days. People are working two and three jobs. It's fricking nuts out there. But still, they're hungry for change and they're hungry to do something. And maybe they heard about Muni broadband from me, and now they're really into it. They're saying, "Yeah, I want to send you stuff," and I'm like, please do. I mean, I think part of the appeal of it is that they're watching me fight for this too in real time, and I've been documenting all of it. You know, like when the city hall happened and they told us, "Oh, we can't afford it. Sorry, here's one case study. Oops," I documented my response. Like, as soon as it was over, I streamed on my channel and I just said, "Gee, I'm glad we got this far, but man, the results were disappointing." Then I showed my response, which, you know, I wanted to show my appreciation that they took the time to do it, but also I feel like this was a little not as thorough as it should have been and I think we need to keep this conversation going. So now I'm trying to get, you know, my city turned onto these resources. So, to make a long answer longer, I think Broadband and Brews is a fantastic idea, and I've been trying to find ways to kind of incorporate the touring I'm doing with different causes. You know, we have different groups show up and table. Veterans for Peace shows up to our shows. PM Press shows up to our shows. The DSA shows up. Movement for a People's Party shows up. If we come out to your area, I would love it if you guys showed up. And we're going to be coming to Minneapolis at some point because it's one of my favorite cities in the world. I just can't come during certain times of the year, Chris, as I'm very fragile. I do not handle snow.

Christopher Mitchell: I have to tell you, my wife and I just saw Demitri Martin last week here, and he made it a part of his act. I think most of the comedians I've probably seen in the winter have some kind of riff about it that they'll do, so you know, it can be helpful.

Ron Placone: Well you guys know how to handle it. I mean, I'll say that. You know, I used to drive around 45 weeks a year, so I certainly have had my share of winter in my lifetime. But I was never worried whenever I was up in the Minnesota area because I knew they knew how to take care of it. I knew those roads were always going to be clear. Now if you get out into the rural Dakotas, which had been there, then it gets a little bit no man's land-y, but . . .

Christopher Mitchell: Well let me bring you back and ask you about — because you're very politically savvy. I mean the groups that you've named, you're involved with Democratic Socialists who have taken an idea that used to be verboten and in turned it into something that a whole movement is operating behind. When it comes to municipal broadband or more largely net neutrality, I feel like there are people and elected officials who are taking this as something that they should be championing, but I'm also seeing from a lot of elected officials a sense that people don't vote on this. You know, people will talk about it, it might motivate them to do some things, but we've not seen an impact at the ballot box. What do you think about that?

Ron Placone: There's a couple of things going on there. First of all, I think that net neutrality is not covered as much as it needs to be, and a lot of cases, it's not necessarily covered honestly. You know, I'll use MSNBC for as an example. They're owned by Comcast. You're not going to find an honest net neutrality piece from them, or at least I sure haven't. So that's part of it. I think another part of it is, people are aware of it when they shine a light on it and then they just think that the battle is over or that we don't have to worry about it anymore. You know, when John Oliver did that segment on net neutrality when we were about to lose it, they crashed the FCC's website because so many people wrote comments.

Christopher Mitchell: Yeah, millions of people.

Ron Placone: And when they actually take an honest poll of it, when it's, like, an issue that's in the blogosphere or news-sphere or whatever you want to call it, about 83+ percent of Americans favor net neutrality all across the political aisle.

Christopher Mitchell: I've seen that too.

Ron Placone: But then what happens is people go, "Well, we haven't really seen any effects yet." And I think the general person isn't necessarily aware of, well you haven't seen any effects yet because we're battling this out in court. You know, when Ajit Pai said, "Hey, the loss of net neutrality is going to bring about more jobs." The only area where he was right about that was when it comes to attorneys because they've been working plenty because they've had plenty of work, either defending net neutrality or defending Ajit Pai's FCC in court, because that's what's been going on. People have just been battling in court. So I think the general person isn't really cognizant of the entire war, metaphorical war, going on around this issue. They just kind of become aware when a battle happens. And I think that's largely the fault of the press. Plus let's be honest, it's not the sexiest issue at face value, you know.

Christopher Mitchell: Let's bring it back to Pasadena. And you're absolutely right. Although I think you going back to 2004, it's wonderful. A lot of people think I've been around since 2013, and so this is a long going issue. Just the fact that most people know what it is now is remarkable. But I wanted to ask you, those kinds of people who aren't paying as close attention, do you think you need to mobilize them to get Pasadena to move forward or is that not necessary to get Pasadena to move forward?

Ron Placone: Oh, I think you need to mobilize as many people as possible because I think this is going to be one of those things. It might take a ballot initiative. It might take an alliance, which involves some people running for office. I think it's going to take a big local push, and one of the things I've been trying to do — you know, I think messaging just really needs to be on par. An organization that I'm really excited about — I mean, I like Free Press a lot. I've been following them for years, pretty much since they started. Fight for the Future I think has really been knocking it out of the park as of recent. I really love what they're doing. And a lot of these organizations are a little more specifically net neutrality focus because they understand that we really need to hold the front lines. The way I like to see it — and I hate to use these war metaphors because I am like one of the biggest passivists I know when it comes to the literal thing. But in the metaphorical world, net neutrality is kind of the battle for the net that we have to win, but muni broadband all across the freaking country, that's the war, so to speak. And that's what we really need to do to win this thing once and for all, and to make sure that the Internet is always going to be the open platform and the medium we know it as. It's going to take city-owned Internet all across the country, and you know, the proof's in the pudding worldwide. I mean all the countries that did this in the first place, they get better speeds than we do, better access than we do, and they usually pay a much cheaper price for it. The countries that did what we did and handed it over to corporate interest and allowed organized duopolies to happen, their access kind of sucks. Look at Australia. So you know, the proof is out there that this is a very important thing and cities that were ahead of the curve, they're kind of celebrated. I mean look at Chattanooga — they're Gig City now. They sniffed this out early on. They've had their municipal service since 2014. They were ahead of the curve. I think that there needs to be some strong messaging there. I'm trying to get #BigCable to really catch on, on social media. I think it's the next important chapter. But you know, there's so much going on right now and it's such a divisive time politically on so many levels, as we know — and we could open that can of worms and be talking all day — that I think a lot of people, they sort of see this as this is kind of something we have to put on the back burner. My perspective is, look, I understand how you might come to that conclusion, but here's the deal. Without an efficient communication vehicle, any other effort we have in this country is futile. We need to have an efficient communication vehicle. Go ask the firefighters in California who got their data throttled while they were fighting a fire how important that is, and it's because of the loss of net neutrality that that was allowed to happen, that Verizon was able to get away with that nonsense.

Christopher Mitchell: Yeah, I think it's worth — I mean, I'm always a little bit touchy about that example because it's not clear that Verizon would have not been able to throttle them, but the important thing is the FCC would have been able to step in and resolve it, which is something that we lost. There's always people who are looking to try and discredit people like you and I if anything is said inelegantly, so I wanted to make sure we nailed that down. Do you have any last thoughts here as we're wrapping up the interview that we didn't get a chance to talk about?

Ron Placone: Well I just want to let people know — I know that your following are other people that are really into these issues. If you're in Southern California or in Pasadena, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. RonPlacone.com is my website. Right now is just kind of an informal task force of me and people that are, you know, usually affiliated with my show in most cases, kind of helping out in any way they can. So please, if you want to get involved directly, please reach out to me.

Christopher Mitchell: You record a live news show, and they can jump in on the comments and talk about muni broadband there. What time do you record usually?

Ron Placone: Mondays through Thursdays, 1 p.m. eastern time / 10 a.m. pacific time. And it's just Get Your News On With Ron. It's just on my YouTube channel, youtube.com/ronplacone. And if you're into, hey, how do I get started in my town, obviously Institute for Local Self-Reliance, you guys provide great, phenomenal resources that I tap into all the time. And also, you know, you can look at my playlist and you can see what I did at my city hall. Some people have asked me for my transcript. I've sent it to everybody that has asked. You know, I'm more than happy to share that if you want it written out or you can watch what I did at my city hall and do it at yours and see what happens. So ronplacone.com, youtube.com/ronplacone, and @ronplacone on Twitter.

Christopher Mitchell: Great. Thanks for coming on. It's great to hear not just that you're doing great things, but that everywhere you go you're finding people that are trying to figure this out.

Beverly Hills 90210 - Stagione 1      Cache   Translate Page
Potreste dire, aho Arwen, ti sei messa in vintage?

Comment on Eyes on Milwaukee: Construction To Start on Three Downtown Hotels by tom kahn      Cache   Translate Page
Great news about the three new hotels coming next year, but the larger question still remains, when will funding be available for the addition of the convention center? This problem has existed for decades going back to the old MECCA convention barn in the 70's. The new convention center in 2000 promised a phase 3 expansion on the parking lot next to the existing center, but it's been almost two decades. There is hope with the rendering of the expansion plans to over 4000,000 sq. ft. of convention facility to be able to compete with Minneapolis and Indianapolis for business previous lost due to a lack of space. While this is hopeful news, the other main problem is a signature hotel of at least 500 rooms in close proximity. This is Milwaukee's best chance to obtain jobs and convention business that too long have bypassed our city.

The Cactus Blossoms: Easy Way      Cache   Translate Page
Eins vorneweg: Der Longplayer ist sorgfältig, produziert, die Melodien gefällig, der Harmoniegesang einschmeichelnd. Formal also ein gutes Werk.

Verizon's 5G network for mobile launches on April 11 in these two lucky U.S. cities      Cache   Translate Page
TwitterFacebook

Mark your calendars for April 11, because that's when Verizon switches on its "real" 5G network in two U.S. cities.

Verizon's "5G Ultra Wideband Network" is the real deal — it works with phones and other mobile devices just like 4G LTE — and isn't to be confused with the company's "home" 5G network, which launched last year in select cities.

SEE ALSO: 5G will be crazy fast, but it'll be worthless without unlimited data

This is great news because it means there will actually be a working 5G network to use the handful of new 5G smartphones launching this year on.

But there is some fine print to be aware of. Because, of course, there is! Read more...

Jacob Wohl May Have Filed A False Police Report      Cache   Translate Page

The Minneapolis skyline

Jacob Wohl is the Trump-supporting social media personality who is perhaps best known for a stunt last October when he was caught concocting an elaborate ruse to frame special counsel Robert Mueller for sexual assault, per Business Insider.

Also known for effusive praise of the president and for repeatedly claiming that he overheard people in a “hipster coffee shop” praising Trump – at least before he was permanently banned from Twitter – Wohl may find himself in trouble for a more recent stunt.

Wohl, along with fellow right-wing journalist and Twitter exile Laura Loomer, recently visited the Minneapolis area, where they pushed conspiracy theories about Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, claimed that they were in physical danger from the area’s Muslim community, and reportedly stated that the city of Minneapolis has “sharia police” and “no-go zones.” To much mockery, Wohl also frequently referenced both a large camera crew and security forces, who were always just off camera.

CLOSER LOOK: Who is Rep. Rashida Tlaib?      Cache   Translate Page

This weekend, March 17, Rep. Rashida Tlaib will be speaking at (Council on American Islamic Relations) CAIR-Michigan's 19th annual "Faith-Led, Justice Driven" banquet.

Who knows what to expect. But here are some excerpts from a speech she gave last month, at CAIR-Chicago's 15th annual banquet.

RELATED: CLOSER LOOK: Who is Rep. Ilhan Omar?

You know the speech is going to be good when it begins like this:

CAIR-Chicago 15th Annual Banquet: Rashida Tlaib youtu.be

It's important to remember CAIR's ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. Think of CAIR as a spinoff of HAMAS, who its two founders originally worked for via a Hamas offshoot organization (the Islamic Association for Palestine (IAP)).

A 2009 article in Politico says feds "designated CAIR a co-conspirator with the Holy Land Foundation, a group that was eventually convicted for financing terrorism."

The United Arab Emirates has designated CAIR a terrorist organization.

In 1993, CAIR spokesman Ibrahim Hooper told a reporter for the Minneapolis Star Tribune:

I wouldn't want to create the impression that I wouldn't like the government of the United States to be Islamic sometime in the future.

In 1998, CAIR co-founder Omar Ahmad said:

Islam isn't in America to be equal to any other faith, but to become dominant. The Koran … should be the highest authority in America, and Islam the only accepted religion on Earth.

Notice the slight underhanded jab at Israel. It's just one of many in her speech, and is indicative of the growing anti-Semitism among Democrats, especially Tlaib and Omar.

Most of the speech, as you might expect, is a long rant about the evil Donald Trump.

I wonder if she realizes that the Birth of Jesus pre-dates her religion, and her "country." The earliest founding of Palestine is 1988, so maybe she's a little confused.

Then there's this heartwarming story about advice she received from Congressman John Dingell:

When I was a state legislator, I came in to serve on a panel with him on immigration rights, and Congressman Dingell was sitting there and he had his cane, if you knew him, he always had this cane and he held it in front of him. And I was so tired, I had driven an hour and a half to the panel discussion at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor campus. And I sit down, my hair is all messed up, and I said, 'Oh, my God, I'm so tired of this. I don't know how you've been doing it so long Congressman. They all lie.' And he looks at me and he goes. (She nods yes.) I said, 'You know who I'm talking about, these lobbyists, these special interest [groups], they're all lying to me.' … And he looks at me, and he goes, 'Young lady, there's a saying in India that if you stand still enough on a riverbank, you will watch your enemies float by dead.'

What the hell does that mean? That she wants to see her enemies dead? Who are her enemies? And how does that relate to her opening statement? How does it relate to the "oppression" her family faced at the hand of Israel?

Here’s how much 5G service will cost from VerizonVerizon on Wednesday made several announcements about its upcoming 5G network, revealing launch dates for the new wireless service as well as pricing. The good news for customers looking to be among the first Verizon customers to take advantage of the faster speeds is that 5G access will only cost you $10 extra each month. However, not all Verizon subscribers will be able to get on 5G come April 11th, which is when Big Red's 5G service officially launches.Just like 4G a few years ago, initial 5G coverage will be limited to a few markets and the same goes for Verizon. The first 5G Ultra Wideband mobility cities are Chicago and Minneapolis, Verizon said in a press release. The service will cost $10 per month after the first three months, which are free of charge, but it will require an unlimited plan -- that means you'll need a Verizon Go Unlimited, Beyond Unlimited, and Above Unlimited plan. If you have an older Verizon plan and refuse to switch, you won't have access to 5G.Finally, the last obstacle between you and 5G is a compatible device. Only one of the current 4G devices in the carrier's lineup can be upgraded to 5G, and that's what Verizon is essentially offering its subscribers. The Moto Z3 launched several months ago and is ready to deliver 5G speeds as soon as you cough up the cash for the brand new 5G Moto Mod that goes along with it.If the device sounds familiar, that's because Motorola spoke about the device in recent weeks, showing the 5G Moto Mod in Barcelona at MWC 2019. The mod is essentially a full-fledged smartphone, rocking the new Snapdragon 855 processor, a 5G modem, 5G antennas, and a 2,000 mAh battery. The 5G Moto Mod will be available on preorder on March 14th, and Verizon is discounting it to just $50 for a limited time. Buy it later, and you'll have to pay $349.99.You should also know that Moto Mods are obviously only compatible with Motorola devices like the Moto Z3. Verizon also announced a couple of deals for that handset, both good only on March 14th. You'll get a free Moto Z3 if you activate a new line of service on a Verizon device payment plan. Alternatively, you can upgrade your smartphone to a Moto Z3 for $10 a month for 24 months, which means you'd save $240 off the regular price. In other words, preordering the Moto Z3 and the 5G Moto Mod this week will get you a high-end 5G smartphone for $540 off the regular price. That's not a bad deal if you're looking for quick access to 5G, as long as you're okay having to carry a huge Moto Z3 contraption in your pocket.

"Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life."-Confucius

Life is so crazy.  I wonder how many posts I have said that in?  There is not really time to blog.  Half of the problem is that I can't really blog about much.  When your job deals with medical care and people can easily narrow down your list of possible patient's, you can't really talk vaguely about injuries either.

Soo.... in general, track and cross country are wonderful :).  I have seen some very cool injuries, learned a lot from everyone I work with, and I really enjoy all of the athletes I work with.  It's amazing how much you can learn from people when you spend so much time with them.

We have traveled to...

Traveling with the cross country team has been awesome.  Nice hotels, nice restaurants, plenty of time to explore the cities we were in. In South Bend, I got to spend time with Uncle Joe and Aunt Carol and eat a delicious dinner with them!  I also got to tour Notre Dame Athletics complex.  Super cool, I love that school.

Far from Washington, Rep. Omar's Constituents See the Israel Controversy in a Different Light
Voters in Minnesota's 5th Congressional District spoke to NBC News about the freshman lawmaker's comments.

March 10, 2019, 8:55 PM EDT
NBC News
By Daniel Arkin

MINNEAPOLIS — Rep. Ilhan Omar's comments about Israel have consumed Washington. But here in Minnesota’s diverse 5th Congressional District, a pillar of progressivism that handed Omar a decisive victory in November's midterm elections, there has been far less outrage.

In interviews here, including with residents who are Jewish and Muslim, few of Omar's constituents voiced any anger at the lawmaker, even if they found the remarks troubling. One Jewish leader said she would be open to a good-faith foreign policy debate.

To the director of the Dar Al-Farooq Islamic Center, a large mosque 10 miles south of this city, the furor is overblown.

"Anti-Semitism is real in this country," Mohamed Omar, who is not related to the freshman Democrat, said in an interview in a private study, as children nearby hurried to Friday afternoon prayers. But the controversy, he said, is a "distraction."

In the nation’s capital, Ilhan Omar drew an intense backlash for a tweet that suggested American support for Israel was "all about the Benjamins baby" and a remark that pro-Israel activists pushed for "allegiance to a foreign country." She was accused by some lawmakers and prominent Jewish groups of anti-Semitism and playing on toxic anti-Jewish stereotypes.

In response, the House of Representatives last week overwhelmingly approved a resolution condemning all hate, though the measure did not single her out. Omar, for her part, has apologized for suggesting that the United States' connection to Israel is driven by money from AIPAC, a prominent pro-Israel lobby group.

Rabbi Marcia Zimmerman of Temple Israel, a Reform Jewish congregation that is the oldest synagogue in this city, said many of members of her community have called her over the last month to say they were troubled by Omar's comments.

“I don't know the intention, but I know the impact. The words have been hurtful,” Zimmerman said in the tranquil lobby of the 141-year-old temple, surrounded by 12 floor-to-ceiling windows that symbolize the Torah’s 12 tribes of Israel. She added that the comments are especially problematic amid a recent spike in anti-Semitic incidents nationwide.

Still, Zimmerman said she is open to differing opinions about Israel policies and the Israeli government.

"If she wants to have a conversation about lobbyists and money, let's have that conversation," Zimmerman said. "If she wants to have a conversation about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, let's have that conversation."

But, the rabbi added, "in my mind, tweets are not the way that you communicate complex, complicated issues when you are a member of Congress."

THE MOOD AT HOME

Minnesota boasts the largest Somali-American community in the U.S. — about 70,000 people, according to a Census Bureau estimate — and a robust community of Somalis live in Omar's district, which covers Minneapolis and some of its suburbs. The district is filled with immigrants like Omar, a refugee who fled a Somali civil war with her family and sought asylum in the United States in 1995.

Her district is also reliably blue. Hillary Clinton got 73 percent of the vote here in 2016, and Omar took close to 80 percent in November. She became one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress, taking the seat previously held by Keith Ellison, the first Muslim man.

Anab Ibrahim, the owner of a women's boutique at the Village Market, a bustling Somali shopping mall where women admire brightly colored dresses and men line up for haircuts, said she was "very happy" about Omar's history-making election and believes the congresswoman is a "good worker" who will stick up for low-income people.

Ibrahim, 54, a Somali-American, was disturbed when she learned that a death threat against Omar had been scrawled on a bathroom stall in Rogers, a city northwest of the Twin Cities.

"She said an apology," Ibrahim said, referring to Omar, "and I think it should be accepted."

Abdulahi Farah, 38, a Somali-American volunteer at the mosque, said that anti-Semitism is unacceptable, but added: "If someone wants to criticize an entity — whether it’s AIPAC or the Israeli government or the NRA or the Saudi government — what is the problem?"

But not all Muslims in the area were as forgiving. Khalid Awda, 48, an Iraqi-American who served as an interpreter with the U.S. Army from 2006 to 2012, including a yearlong stint attached to the Minnesota National Guard, said he perceived Omar's comments to be anti-Semitic.

"I feel shame," said Awda, who said he was not able to vote in November.

"She does not represent Islam. She just represents herself," Awda said, adding that he feared those who were offended by Omar's words would also find fault with his wife and daughter simply because they, like the congresswoman, wear hijabs.

Two miles west of the Somali mall, young professionals sipped coffees and ate lunch at The Lynhall, a trendy restaurant where Omar held a meet-and-greet event during the campaign. Luke Shors, 42, an entrepreneur who lives in the district, said her language might have been over the top, but he was sympathetic to her foreign policy platform.

"I do think there’s value in having someone in Congress who can help give a voice to the Palestinian people, who historically have not had much political capital or representation," Shors said.

At Bordertown Coffee, a nonprofit cafe inside a former University of Minnesota fraternity house and adjacent to the campus Hillel center, Zeke Joubert said he was "not riled up" about the comments.

"I feel like as a citizen, as someone she represents, she is encouraging us to challenge and think about the way ... our international politics works," said Joubert, a 34-year-old graduate student.

He said he believed the House resolution, which condemned all "hateful expressions of intolerance," was a "waste of time" that did nothing to address what he described as "the materialities of racism," such as the water crisis in Flint, Michigan.

"We want to hold everyone accountable," said Rae Young, 22, an undergraduate at the University of Minnesota who sat at Bordertown with a copy of "Maus," a graphic novel about the Holocaust.

"If there's Jewish folks in your community who think you're making anti-Semitic comments, then that’s a problem," Young said. "But if someone is accusing you of making anti-Semitic comments because they don't like you as a woman of color, then that's also a problem."

'SHE LOOKS DIFFERENT ... WORSHIPS DIFFERENT'

The Minneapolis area is all too familiar with the consequences of racial and religious hatred. In August 2017, the Dar Al-Farooq Islamic Center was bombed. The three men charged in the attack were members of an Illinois militia group that called itself the White Rabbits.

No one was killed, but the blast shattered windows and destroyed part of the imam's office, frightening worshippers and local religious leaders. The center's leaders repaired the physical damage, but the trauma lingers.

"It's kind of like being in a dark room, and someone might hit you at any moment, but you don’t know where it’s going to come from," said Farah, the volunteer at the mosque, which sits just outside Omar's district in Bloomington and counts many of her constituents as members.

Hassan Jama, an imam who leads prayer services at Dar Al-Farooq and other mosques across the area, spent much of last fall campaigning for Omar, organizing get-out-the-vote efforts.

Jama, who is also executive director of the Minneapolis-based Islamic Association of North America, said he believes the "political climate" in the United States is Islamophobic, and that his congresswoman is the target of so much scrutiny because "she's different."

"She looks different, she speaks different, she dresses different, and she worships different," he told NBC News. "But, luckily, she is in America, and she has a voice, and she's serving the people who elected her."

He dismissed the uproar around Omar — "I don’t believe that's anti-Semitism. I don't believe she hates Jews" — and said he knew of many Jewish people in the district who voted for her.

Mohamed Omar, the executive director of Dar Al-Farooq, has wrestled in recent days with Omar's comments and noted she's hardly the country's main source of division.

"We have a president in the United States ... who normalizes people who are literally embracing anti-Semitic behavior, people who are chanting 'Jews will not replace us,' and he’s saying there's fine people on 'both sides,'" Mohamed Omar said, referring to the 2017 marches in Charlottesville, Virginia.

"Eleven Jewish people died in a synagogue," he added, referring to the shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh in October, "and the country didn't react like the way they're reacting to Ilhan."

Anthony Barr deal continues history of Vikings one-upping Jets in free agency      Cache   Translate Page
Welcome to the Wednesday edition of The Cooler, where sometimes it's OK to gloat. Let's get to it: It's a single subject sort of day, but a play that presents itself in three acts over 15 years. Depending on where you live, it's either a tragedy or a tale of a scrappy underdog toppling a larger foe. It is the story of three athletes, when given a choice, picking the Minni-apple over the Big Apple. Let's start in the past and work our way forward: *In 2004, the Vikings were desperately seeking to upgrade their defensive back group. They targeted Buffalo free agent Antoine Winfield Sr. when negotiations opened, but at one point all hope seemed lost when Winfield was poised to sign with the Jets. He even skipped a scheduled flight to Minneapolis to stay in New York as negotiations neared the finish line and a contract was agreed to in principle. But Mike Tice called in a favor to a friend with a private plane, and the Vikings whisked Winfield to Minnesota on a late night flight. The next day, Winfield signed with the Vikings — $35 million for six years, including a $10.8 million signing bonus, a slightly sweeter deal than the Jets were offering. "I was real close [to signing with the Jets]," Winfield said at his introductory news conference in 2004. "Everything was pretty much printed out. But when it came down to it, I just wasn't ready. I'm a man of my word. I promised Coach Tice and Coach Cottrell I would visit. I told my wife before this even started that I would make two visits." Winfield ended up playing for the Vikings for nine seasons and 119 games while making the Pro Bowl three times. *In 2018, just last season, the Jets were charging hard for the quarterback considered the prize of the free agent market: Kirk Cousins. New York, in fact, offered Cousins a bigger contract than the Vikings — three years for $90 million fully guaranteed ($30 million a year), which Cousins confirmed in a video last August. If the Jets thought they had the inside track with their offer, it seems that the reality was more that Cousins was leveraging the Jets to get the Vikings to increase their offer — which at the time was $25 million a year for three years, guaranteed. Cousins said of his agent and the Jets offer: "He's got to get them from 25 to a number that is competitive with the Jets' offer. But the fact that we have the Jets offer is huge. Now it gives the other teams a reason to come up." The Vikings offered $28 million a year for three years guaranteed, and Cousins took it. *That Cousins deal has implications on this year's Vikings salary cap to the point that it looked as though Minnesota was in real danger of not being able to sign either Sheldon Richardson or Anthony Barr. Richardson reportedly agreed to a deal with the Browns on Monday, and reports emerged late that night that Barr was going to leave the Vikings to sign with the Jets. But much like Winfield 15 years ago, Barr had second thoughts and a late night conversation got the Vikings back in the picture. And just like Cousins last season, Barr ended up taking less money to sign with the Vikings. All of this led to a series of amusing tweets on Tuesday when it was announced Le'Veon Bell was going to sign with the Jets. I doubt he's going to change his mind later today and join the Vikings when contracts can become official, but you never know.

          (Minneapolis / St. Paul) Glock 19 Roland Special, G19, 3rd Gen - $ 925      Cache   Translate Page

A super nice build I put together, tested and then cleaned and stored in my safe ever since.  I was going to put a fancier trigger and a red dot on it and re-test it, but once I shot it, the trigger is amazing and it shoots perfectly as it sits, way better than my Glock 34 which has been very good as well, but this shoots even better.

I've just been shooting my stock guns in IDPA when I have had time this year.  This thing is slick, I used the best components I could find and it was built off of a brand new, never shot Glock OEM 3rd Gen frame, not some other gun that had been shot 100,000 times, it is completely factory fresh.

I'm only going to sell this as an entire build as it sits, I'm not interested in selling just the barrel or slide, etc.

I tested it out with 150 rounds of Nato 9mm, it shoots wonderfully.  Clean crisp trigger (amazingly good actually, way better than I thought I was going to get) and laser accurate.

I have had a BUNCH of emails about trades, haven't really come across much I would take in trade for it.

Trades I would consider: Anschutz .22 bolt actions, S&W revolvers, Colt revolvers, (in .22 or .357), maybe some other higher end .22 or 9mm stuff.

Trades I don't need at this point: any oddball caliber guns, cowboy guns, lever actions, 1911's, AR's, AK's, 4-$250 guns, a $250 gun and cash, or anything like that.  Also anything that is not a gun or a gun safe at this point please.

Build sheet:
-All components were brand new, never fired, this was not a build I just slapped together with parts I could find, I backordered the parts I wanted to use and waited to get them, it has exactly 150 rounds through it.
-New 3rd Gen Glock OEM Stripped frame, it was a brand new bare frame that I ordered from Glock directly, never fired.
-Lone Wolf Lower Parts kit with upgraded trigger components, way better than I thought it was going to be
-Brand new Glock OEM Locking Block
-Brownell’s Slide, RMR cut, with top relief, with front serrations
-Lone Wolf Slide Completion Kit
-Extended slide and Mag release
-Glock OEM pins
-KKM Match Barrel with Compensator
-Glock OEM Recoil guide and spring
-Maple Firearms RMR Cutout cover

Lipps, Inc. Net Worth      Cache   Translate Page

Before very difficult funksters like Prince and enough time hit the national stage, before groundbreaking alternative rockers Hüsker Dü as well as the Replacements, Minneapolis was hardly a blip about America’s musical radar – that’s, until Lipps, Inc. broke away with among disco’s most monumental singles, the main smash “Funkytown.” The brainchild of maker/songwriter Steven …

Trump Supporter Claims 'Death Threats' From Fake Gay Twitter Account He Made Up      Cache   Translate Page

Trump supporter and right-wing personality, Jacob Wohl, may have reported fake death threats from a fictional gay Hispanic ‘diversity coordinator’ he made up on Twitter.

Of course he’d have to make the fictional character gay…

You might recall Wohl’s name from when he suffered an epic fail trying to smear Special Counsel Robert Mueller with fake accusations of sexual assault right before the 2018 midterm elections. The 21-year-old found himself suspended from Twitter for those antics, specifically creating and operating fake accounts.

The Daily Beast reports that, during a trip to Minneapolis, Wohl (a self-professed ‘political and corporate intel consultant’) went to the police and reported he’d received death threats from someone on Twitter. In the video embedded in the tweet below, Wohl specifically identifies the threat as coming from a ‘diversity coordinator.’

NBC News reporter Ben Collins pointed up the charade on Twitter:

On February 26, Collins reported the Twitter account ‘drakehomes612’ was created by Wohl. The profile featured a Hispanic man’s photo, and its user described themselves as a ‘Diversity Coordinator, Minneapolis Born and Raised. Hater of racists, homophones, and bigots” and punctuated with a rainbow flag.

The Daily Beast writes, “A source familiar with Wohl’s fake accounts confirmed to me that @Drakehomes612 was run by Wohl before being deleted by Twitter. That means Wohl was sending himself fake death threats, presumably in an attempt to up the drama during his Minneapolis videos.”

The Minneapolis Police released documentation today from Wohl’s filed report which included a screen capture of the ‘threat.’ The language is identical to a threat Wohl included in his recent ‘documentary’ he shot while in Minneapolis.

In fact, Collins tracked down the man in the photo and it turns out he’s a Minnesota real estate agent named Aaron Delgado who had no idea his image had been usurped.

You'd think after recent events in Chicago, Wohl would have learned the risks involved in such antics.

Right-Wing Persomality Appears to have Faked Death Threats Against Himself      Cache   Translate Page

Having a business the Minneapolis and St. Paul area for 3 months a year... over a 34 year period, I can tell you that Minnesotans have been brain washed by liberalism and, to this day, do not see what the problem is. From personal experience and observations, Muslims, particularly Somalis, are just lower than low class and are proud of it. You have to see it to believe it. Meanwhile, some Twin Cities may complain, but do nothing. Thus, more and more anti-American and anti-Christian Muslims are getting into office.

In 2017 the islamic brotherhood attempted to pass a law through the World Court to turn over anyone who witnessed about Jesus, to any moslem country to be tried under sharia law, which of course would lead to a death sentence. As far as I know it didn't pass into law, but these people are dangerous. Their agenda is to convert the world to islam or kill those who resist, and bring the whole World under one law and religion --- islam, and sharia law. Thie group is radical. Not all muslims believe this way, but those that do are extremely dangerous, and extremely aggressive!
