Cal Rep Premieres New Play A LIVE MIXTAPE This Friday      Cache   Translate Page

California Repertory Company (CSULB Theatre Arts Department) presents the new play A Live Mixtape written by Long Beach native and CSULB alumna Tahirih Moeller. Tahirih was a student of the award-winning playwright Patricia Loughrey who wrote Dear Harvey, produced by Cal Rep in Fall 2018. It is a particular honor to have both teacher and student produced in the same season!

A Live Mixtape captures the voices and the struggles of the community. Artistic Director Jeff Janisheski says, "It's brave and bold writing that tackles big ideas about her local community, the issues pressing on her generation, and about life as a black woman in the US."

Tahirih Moeller was recently featured in American Theatre Magazine's article 6 Theatre Workers You Should Know. She received second place for the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival's Hip Hop Theater Creator Award for A Live Mixtape. Moeller is also the co-founder of the non-profit Up & Coming Actors where she has written and produced seven one-acts. A workshop production of her play Heroes of the West, co-written with April Brewster was recently produced at Long Beach Playhouse. Janisheski says, "she is a vibrant new voice in American playwrighting."

Bruce A. Lemon., Jr is the Artistic Director of Watts Village Theater Company and is directing A Live Mixtape. He is an actor, director and radio host who works to reimagine his community through his work. He has worked with numerous theatre companies in LA including LA Opera, Son of Semele, Company of Angels, Illyrian Players and many more.

Elina De Santos Directs World Premiere Of THE THINGS WE DO      Cache   Translate Page

Bill falls for Sarah, but she is married to Ted. Ted might be a good match for Alice - who is married to Bill. Elina de Santos directs a painfully funny look at modern relationships by former attorney general-turned-playwright Grant Woods. The world premiere of The Things We Do, presented by Never Dark Productions as a guest production at the Odyssey Theatre, opens on April 6, with performances continuing through May 12.

Once trust is broken, how do you get it back?

"The play has a light, comic, sexy feel at the beginning, which draws you in," says de Santos. "But then, because of the things people do, it gets darker and more real. It's fresh and surprising."

According to Woods, "I wanted to explore the situation a lot of couples find themselves in when they reach a certain point in life - people who are in their 40s or 50s and have many years invested in their relationships, but who now must decide whether to go forward or make a change."

One of Arizona's premier attorneys, Woods served as Arizona's Attorney General from 1991-1999. He was the first chief of staff to the late Senator John McCain and delivered the first eulogy at the Senator's memorial services.

"When I was an undergraduate at Occidental College, I knew I would become either a writer or a lawyer," Woods says. "About ten years ago, I realized that if I was ever going to do the writing thing, it was now or never."

Since then, Woods has penned a crime novel and two plays. His other play, Dear Senator, about a traditional conservative politician who strikes up a friendship with a progressive Latino activist, received a production in 2018 at the Tempe Center for the Arts. As a songwriter, Woods' songs have been recorded and performed by award-winning artists such as Francine Reed, Walt Richardson, Blaine Long, Lawrence Zubia, and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and E Street Band member Nils Lofgren. His columns and articles have appeared in newspapers and magazines across the country, and he has been recognized by the Associated Press as Arizona's top radio show host. Mr. Woods is the founder of the Mesa Boys & Girls Club, the Mesa Education Foundation and the Mesa Arts Academy, one of Arizona's first successful charter schools. He has won top awards from the American Cancer Society, American Lung Association, Salvation Army, Children's Action Alliance and Chicanos Por La Causa. He was one of the lead negotiators in the states' lawsuit against Big Tobacco resulting in the largest civil settlement in history.

The production stars Blake Boyd (You Love That I'm Not Your Wife at The Players Theatre, NYC; upcoming film Lost Girls: Angie's Story) as Bill; Marlene Galan (Hostage and Church and State at iTheatre Collaborative, Phoenix; Dead Man's Cell Phone at Long Beach Playhouse; former newscaster at KCBS, KPNX and KSAZ) as Sarah; Liesel Kopp (recently seen at the Odyssey in Arsenic and Old Lace and in several Hollywood Fringe Festival productions including the award-winning Katy and Jennifer) as Alice; and Stephen Rockwell (former resident artist at A Noise Within, numerous productions at Actors Co-op, International City Theatre, Antaeus, Theatricum Botanicum and more) as Ted.

The creative team includes set designer Stephanie Kerley Schwartz, lighting designer Brian Gale, sound designer Christopher Moscatiello, costume designer Kate Bergh and casting director Michael Donovan. The production stage manager is Tempest Rockbell. Susan Segal produces and Seth Sulka is executive producer.

The Things We Do opens on Saturday, April 6, with performances thereafter taking place on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. through May 12. On Sunday, April 7 only, the performance will be at 5 p.m. with no 2 p.m. matinee. There will be two preview performances on Thursday, April 4 and Friday, April 5, both at 8 p.m. All tickets are $35 (reserved seating) except opening night, which is $40. Discounts are available for seniors, students, and members of Actors Equity, SAG and AFTRA; call theater for details. The Odyssey Theatre is located at 2055 S. Sepulveda Blvd., West Los Angeles, 90025. For reservations and information, call (310) 477-2055 x2 or go to www.OdysseyTheatre.com.

The summer started off slow, with everyone being sick. I feel like we are finally back to our normal crazy.

Feeling like summer was escaping me, we made a spontaneous trip to Long Beach.  I decided to take only the oldest, Teagan and Brendan.  We had a fantastic time exploring new places, the most moving was the Holocaust Museum.  Since Teagan and Brendan have both been studying WWII so this was a wonderful field trip to learn from this dark period of history and how even the darkest hour there were heros among us, people strong enough to step up.

On a lighter part of the trip:

The Long Beach Aquarium was awesome, with all of the touch tanks! Their aquariums were beautiful and educational.

Feeding the Lorakeets-my favoite birds

They even let you touch the sharks! Ok, not this one but
some smaller ones.

We enjoyed exploring the Queen Mary and its history.

Whale Watching:

and some time wandering the surf shops in Surf City.  Now it feels like summer!!
I hope you are enjoying your summer.

DeAnn

Even though this is my "Brisbane" blog, we had such a great time on vacation in British Columbia and in Taiwan that we just had to share! Here are so pics from Vancouver, Brown's Bay and Long Beach.

Our view from the RV at Ripple Rock resort. We went "glamping" (glamour camping) with Pat's parents. It was pretty sweet. Running water, a stove, a real bed, a hot tub, a pool table and quite a view.

This was the view the next morning - a little mistier!

They have all sorts of animals in Brown's Bay:

Jellyfish (non-poisonous, hurray!)

Seals

Eagles

Wooden orcas, wooden mermaids and Bens

Occasionally, cruise ships go by, which is really the most exciting thing that happens at Ripple Rock.

We went for a boat ride in the zodiac, it was quite spectacular, if a little cold and cloudy.

We had a great hike up to a lookout, where we met an Australian family (true story!) who'd been on an Alaskan cruise. Here is Pat, Ben and I, feeling very accomplished.

You can actually get a proper view without our faces in the way. Look at the whirlpools! Ooo... whirpools...

Mum threw us a nice party when we got back, down at Jericho Beach. Behold, the splendour of my favourite duck pond... note the heron.

We spent Canada Day on Granville Island. Here is the Maple Leaf Oracle. She knighted people when they put money in the hat.

And a nice view from under the bridge...

Oh, the crows! I'd forgotten about the crows, migrating from West Van to Burnaby every night. Here in Queensland we have bats that do the same thing, flying from one city to the next in search of fruit. Did you know a group of bats is called a colony, a camp or a cloud? Anyway, these are crows.

Loved living on Commercial Drive for 6 days. Thanks Rob for making that happen! One of my favourite places in Vancouver, even if it is becoming seriously gentrified. What will it be like in another 2 1/2 years?

Next, it was off to beautiful Long Beach and Tofino.

Pat and Antonio successfully built a fire the first night. Good job!

Pat, roasting his weiner.

Obligatory Long Beach sunset shot.

Pat bathed in the morning light.

A nurse log in Cathedral Grove - my first time hiking through there, by the way. It was so majestic and beautiful, such a British Columbian experience!

Back in Vancouver, with only a few days left (after making tons of wedding plans and a super Littlejohn family BBQ) I hit up English Bay and took a pic of those crazy laughing guys.

And Cambie Street, with the mountains in the background - s'why they call it Fairview, I guess.

I love the new Canada Line. Made Richmond more accessible (love those Richmond malls!) and made getting back and forth from Mum and Dad's easy enough (if only the stupid #49 bus ran past midnight... wtf #49 bus... seriously).

Other thoughts on Vancouver after being away for 8 months - a lot of places I remember are now gone, or have changed, or are 'For Lease'. There are so many homeless people. Being in Brisbane where it is not such a huge problem kind of took my blinders off when visiting Van. They are everywhere and I know it's a big city and it's one of the mildest weather-wise in Canada, but it's still jarring.

It was so great to see all my Canada friends. I can't believe how much I fit in one month! Not to mention all the shows I saw - Titania, Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris, Anthony & Cleopatra, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Singin' In The Rain (wow, lots of shows with long titles!) and a sneak peek of Hair. Not to mention two little play-readings of my own!

Next post will be our one-day stopover in Taiwan! Stay tuned!

Session: D-Day at Tarawa:: After-Action Report - 2 Days in Hell - Finally a Win!      Cache   Translate Page

by AfrikaKorps14

After playing multiple times and being stopped at Turn 10 multiple times, not only did I reach Turn 11, I actually WON! cool

Since I hadn't originally planned on recording this session, I put together a summary of the end-game state along with my general course of action during the game. I've also included some notes about particularly important assaults and how I approached them. Rather than include too much strategy that might constitute "spoilers" to some, I'll post that separately in the Strategy sub-forum.

KEY / ABBREVIATIONS

JP = Japanese
PH = Position Hex

For clarity, Positions / PHs are identified by letter and number, then by abbreviated color (for example, "YW" = Yellow and "BR" = Brown).

FINAL TURN STATUS (by Sector, West to East)

d10-1 Sector F - All PHs occupied by units and/or Garrison markers.
d10-2 Sector A - All PHs taken, but A10/11/13 unoccupied due to lack of units / Garrison markers (depleted by this point).
d10-3 Sector E - All PHs occupied by units and/or Garrison markers.
d10-4 Sector B - All PHs occupied by units and/or Garrison markers.
d10-5 Sector D - All PHs occupied by units and/or Garrison markers.
d10-6 Sector C - No PHs taken; only remaining JP units on board at C3 (BL), C9 (RD), and C13 (BR).

Order of Revealed JP Actions: M, R, A, P, I (revealing "R" second was bad! yuk)

Status of Admiral Shibasaki: Killed on Turn 13, prior to Night Turn, therefore Counterattack blunted (which was helpful! ).

OBJECTIVES

Primary Objectives (set by game): Must control Sector A or F, plus an additional 2 complete Sectors, plus 8 additional PHs. (Taken by Turn 26)

Secondary Objectives (set by me):

d10-1 Range 5 Command Posts achieved with both HQ 2/2 (E5) and 8/2 (D10)
d10-2 All 6 SP Engineers alive to provide Support (by end of game, all but 2 Support markers deployed as Garrisons)
d10-3 All 6 Tank units alive and at full strength (4).
d10-4 Landings successful enough that some LVTs remain (3x 1-pip units)
d10-5 All Heroes deployed (1 KIA)
d10-6 At least 1 Artillery unit deployed / landed (for long-range barrage and attack)

SUMMARY OF BATTLE BY SECTOR

F (The Bird's Beak) - Initial goal was to take and hold YW and BL Positions. Depending on LVT drift, secondary landing goal was to take and hold GR/BR positions, if practical, to allow a faster link to Sector E and to protect any LVTs that pivoted right. Both goals were achieved without undue loss. Next goal was to reduce and take RD Position, as PR could not be approached effectively from land-side with RD still occupied. PR Position was difficult to take, requiring more than one CC attempt. At this point, forces reduced enough that F12 (YW) and F13 (BR) left intact until more forces available.

E (Red 2 Beach) - Initial goal was to take E1/2 (BL) and E5 (BR) to prep E5 for possible CP. E5 was a particular problem due to repeated reinforcement and occupation by JP Tanks. Next objective was to assist forces in Sector D in taking key PH D14 (RD) which commands approaches to airfield. After that, forces worked along the seawall (safer, only steady fire) to reduce RD Position. As units became available, E14 (YW) and E15 (BR) were assaulted with CC (avoids doubling of both Strength and Depth for Fortified Buildings). After the Western airfield Positions were secure, forces drove South to take A3/4/5 (RD) along the opposite beach. This was followed by a late advance into A2 (BR) and A8/9 (BL).

D (Red 3 Beach) - This was the toughest fight by far. GN Position along pier taken rapidly, but adjacent YW PH fought hard. Due to stubborn fire from both D5 (BL Fortified Building) and D9/10 (PR), advancement was slow. PR position overlooking Northern tip of airfield changed hands twice before it was secured. Sector E forces assisted in taking D14 (RD) to secure PR Position. Next, units advanced on D15 (YW) to protect PR and setup attack on D16 (GR), then D11 (RD), then D12 (PR). CP established in D10 (PR) once D15 taken. Since 4-hex BR Position cannot be safely approached from the North beach, D11 and D12 must be taken first. Once these 3 PHs were taken, Heavy Infantry could assist with systematic assault on D6/7/8/13 (BR). Once BR was mostly secure, the direction of attack was switched South to B5 (RD) and B6 (BL), as these are not subject to intense fire from adjacent Positions. A couple units from Sector E were used to attack B2/3/4 (BR), as these were the only occupied Positions in Sector B. Once taken, Garrisons were quickly deployed before other Positions along beach in Sector B could be occupied. Near the end, units were sent in both directions to take lone PHs at B12 (YW) and B1 (YW). As security, once B1 taken, units cleared C5 (BR) to prevent attacks, as B1 and C5 are within 2 hexes of each other.

A (Green beach) - Sector A was left totally alone until forces from Sector E and landings from Green beach were available. Landing forces took F15 (BR) immediately, thereby securing the flank of Sector F. They also occupied A7/10 (PR, with Fort. building). Once secured (or at least out of JP communication), landing forces moved East and occupied A11/12/13 (GR), using these to clear A6 (BL). With Tank support, forces from Sector F were finally able to assault F12 (YW) and secure it, but our Hero was sacrificed in the process of taking the last of Sector F. The landing forces continued to move East, taking A1 (RD) and linking up with Sector E forces which secured A14 (YW).

FINAL COMMENTS

Both frustrating enough to make you go bald and fun enough to make you keep playing, this game was a back-and-forth battle the whole time. There were many CC exchanges that took multiple turns and required reinforcement to try again, mainly centered around the Fortified Buildings. Sector D was by far the hardest Sector to secure and had the fewest remaining units available at the end. Sector F (Bird's Beak) was a close second, as most of the Red 1 units were chewed up by those Red and Purple Positions. Getting the "R" Action early really hurt, as JP units kept popping up and re-popping up in difficult locations early in the game. Due to the avenues of advancement, not many positions were out of JP communication until late in the game. Card draws were pretty favorable this game, especially compared to the previous one (nearly every card draw called for either one or two JP Depth markers).

Again, I don't want to divulge too much strategic analysis here, so I'll try to link to a separate thread once it's posted.

Thanks again for Mr. Butterfield for an excellent title with lots of tension and changes in fortune. I may yell at the board when playing, but I also admire the tightness of the design and mechanism. This is a good game in a good series and worth considering for one's collection.

Nationwide College Admissions Scam

It seems some famous people paid to get their white liberal privileged offspring into some prestigious colleges!U.S. Attorneys » District of Massachusetts » NewsSHAREDepartment of JusticeU.S. Attorney’s OfficeDistrict of MassachusettsArrests Made in Nationwide College Admissions Scam: Alleged Exam Cheating & Athletic Recruitment SchemeDefendants include CEOs, actresses, university athletic coaches, and college exam administratorsBOSTON – Dozens of individuals involved in a nationwide conspiracy that facilitated cheating on college entrance exams and the admission of students to elite universities as purported athletic recruits were arrested by federal agents in multiple states this morning and charged in federal court in Boston. Athletic coaches from Yale, Stanford, USC, Wake Forest and Georgetown, among others, are implicated, as well as parents and exam administrators. William “Rick” Singer, 58, of Newport Beach, Calif., was charged with racketeering conspiracy, money laundering conspiracy and obstruction of justice. Singer owned and operated the Edge College & Career Network LLC (“The Key”) – a for-profit college counseling and preparation business – and served as the CEO of the Key Worldwide Foundation (KWF) – a non-profit corporation that he established as a purported charity.Between approximately 2011 and February 2019, Singer allegedly conspired with dozens of parents, athletic coaches, a university athletics administrator, and others, to use bribery and other forms of fraud to secure the admission of students to colleges and universities including Yale University, Georgetown University, Stanford University, the University of Southern California, and Wake Forest University, among others. Also charged for their involvement in the scheme are 33 parents and 13 coaches and associates of Singer’s businesses, including two SAT and ACT test administrators.  Also charged is John Vandemoer, the head sailing coach at Stanford University, Rudolph “Rudy” Meredith, the former head soccer coach at Yale University, and Mark Riddell, a counselor at a private school in Bradenton, Fla. The conspiracy involved 1) bribing SAT and ACT exam administrators to allow a test taker, typically Riddell, to secretly take college entrance exams in place of students or to correct the students’ answers after they had taken the exam; 2) bribing university athletic coaches and administrators—including coaches at Yale, Stanford, Georgetown, the University of Southern California, and the University of Texas—to facilitate the admission of students to elite universities under the guise of being recruited as athletes; and (3) using the façade of Singer’s charitable organization to conceal the nature and source of the bribes.   College Entrance Exam Cheating SchemeAccording to the charging documents, Singer facilitated cheating on the SAT and ACT exams for his clients by instructing them to seek extended time for their children on college entrance exams, which included having the children purport to have learning disabilities in order to obtain the required medical documentation. Once the extended time was granted, Singer allegedly instructed the clients to change the location of the exams to one of two test centers: a public high school in Houston, Texas, or a private college preparatory school in West Hollywood, Calif. At those test centers, Singer had established relationships with test administrators Niki Williams and Igor Dvorskiy, respectively, who accepted bribes of as much as $10,000 per test in order to facilitate the cheating scheme. Specifically, Williams and Dvorskiy allowed a third individual, typically Riddell, to take the exams in place of the students, to give the students the correct answers during the exams, or to correct the students’ answers after they completed the exams. Singer typically paid Ridell $10,000 for each student’s test. Singer’s clients paid him between $15,000 and $75,000 per test, with the payments structured as purported donations to the KWF charity. In many instances, the students taking the exams were unaware that their parents had arranged for the cheating.College Recruitment SchemeIt is further alleged that throughout the conspiracy, parents paid Singer approximately $25 million to bribe coaches and university administrators to designate their children as purported athletic recruits, thereby facilitating the children’s’ admission to those universities. Singer allegedly described the scheme to his customers as a “side door,” in which the parents paid Singer under the guise of charitable donations to KWF. In turn, Singer funneled those payments to programs controlled by the athletic coaches, who then designated the children as recruited athletes – regardless of their athletic experience and abilities. Singer also made bribe payments to most of the coaches personally. For example, during a call with one parent, Singer stated: “Okay, so, who we are…what we do is we help the wealthiest families in the U.S. get their kids into school…My families want a guarantee. So, if you said to me ‘here’s our grades, here’s our scores, here’s our ability, and we want to go to X school’ and you give me one or two schools, and then I’ll go after those schools and try to get a guarantee done.” As part of the scheme, Singer directed employees of The Key and the KWF to create falsified athletic “profiles” for students, which were then submitted to the universities in support of the students’ applications. The profiles included fake honors that the students purportedly received and elite teams that they purportedly played on.  In some instances, parents supplied Singer with staged photos of their children engaged in athletic activity – such as using a rowing machine or purportedly playing water polo.Tax Fraud ConspiracyBeginning around 2013, Singer allegedly agreed with certain clients to disguise bribe payments as charitable contributions to the KWF, thereby enabling clients to deduct the bribes from their federal income taxes. Specifically, Singer allegedly instructed clients to make payments to the KWF in return for facilitating their children’s admission to a chosen university. Singer used a portion of that money to bribe university athletic coaches to designate the children as student athletes. Thereafter, Masera or another KWF employee mailed letters from the KWF to the clients expressing thanks for their purported charitable contributions. The letter stated: “Your generosity will allow us to move forward with our plans to provide educational and self-enrichment programs to disadvantaged youth,” and falsely indicated that “no good or services were exchanged” for the donations. Many clients then filed personal tax returns that falsely reported the payment to the KWF as charitable donations. The charge of racketeering conspiracy provides for a sentence of no greater than 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release, a fine of $250,000 or twice the gross gain or loss, whichever is greater and restitution.
