Certificação garante a qualidade

          Skerritt’s swipe      Cache   Translate Page

Cricket West Indies (CWI) is becoming a “Cameron-centric organization” and less of a cricket-centric entity. That's the view of Ricky Skerritt who is challenging Whycliffe “Dave” Cameron for the post of president of the governing body of cricket in the region.

In an address last night to a gathering of cricket administrators, stakeholders and fans at the Errol Barrow Centre For Creative Imagination, University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Skerritt said he and his running mate Dr Kishore Shallow had prepared a ten-point plan they believed could become the guide for the pathway forward for West Indies cricket along with inputs from stakeholders across the region.

[caption id="attachment_291549" align="aligncenter" width="600"](From right) Ricky Skerritt and Dr Kishore Shallow at last night’s discussion with facilitator David Ellis and the UWI’s Amanda Reifer. (From right) Ricky Skerritt and Dr Kishore Shallow at last night’s discussion with facilitator David Ellis and the UWI’s Amanda Reifer.[/caption]

“I am sure that we can fine-tune this plan to even more simple language to ensure that the C in CWI actually stands for the word cricket. Sadly, it has been my experience that CWI is rapidly becoming more of a Cameron-centric organization and less of a cricket-centric organization. Now, what do we mean when we say that CWI is becoming Cameron-centric? This is not disrespect for Cameron. I am simply speaking the truth. In short, it means the needs and fancy of Cameron have become bigger and more important than our cricketers and various indicators have shown me that the politics of survival in the office of the president matters more to him at this time than our cricket.

“Other indicators tell me cricket matters less than the president entertaining and traveling. The performance of the elite teams matters only when they win, and the answer to losing a series is to fire the coaches no matter what are the financial implications,” Skerritt told the audience that included vice-president of the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) Calvin Hope, Board members Timothy Boyce, E. Betty Lewis Browne and Ignatius Marshall, former president E.K. “Tony” Marshall, ex-Barbados captains Philo Wallace and Kirk Edwards, Steven Leslie, the director of cricket at the BCA and Edison James who served as Prime Minister of Dominica from 1995 to 2000.

Skerritt, who is an independent director of CWI, said he wanted to make it absolutely clear that his principal reason for seeking the presidency of CWI was to help find sustainable solutions to the challenges facing West Indies cricket.

He charged that under Cameron's tenure as leader of CWI, Increasing the peril was more urgent than rebuilding relationships with the stakeholders, and relationships only mattered with those who said “yes” and agreed with Cameron.

“Those who doubt and question Cameron's decisions quickly become enemies of CWI. In the Cameron-centric culture governance only matters when it can be sidestepped and power is only useful when it can be sidestepped beyond that mandate of articles of association,” the former manager of the West Indies cricket team said.

Skerritt, a past tourism minister in St Kitts and Nevis said his purpose for making the presentation was not to attack Cameron but to put forward positive ideas to take West Indies cricket forward beyond March 24 - the day of the election. He listed some of the ideas he and Shallow were articulating to chart a new path for cricket.

Among them are the creation of a cricket-centered culture, optimum use of technology for greater effectiveness, an increase in grassroots cricket, the enhancement of the franchise system, modernization of coaching education, increased exposure for the Under-19 and Under-23 players, reevaluation of the system of team selections and the reparation of stakeholder relations.

Shallow said the opportunity for he and Skerritt to make their presentation to the BCA came about after initial rejection but had turned out to be a blessing in disguise because rather than addressing just nine members of the BCA's board, they were now speaking to a cross section of the Barbadian public and several persons around the world via the live stream.

The election to choose a president and vice-president of CWI takes place in Jamaica this month-end. Skerritt and Shallow will battle for the two top positions in West Indies cricket against Cameron and current vice-president of CWI Emmanuel Nanthan of Dominica.

Cameron has already garnered the support of the BCA board, as well as those of the Windward Islands and Guyana in the lead-up to the elections, while the boards of Trinidad and Tobago and the Leeward Islands are throwing their support behind Skerritt and Shallow. The direction of the vote of the Jamaica board is not known but could prove critical to the outcome of the election. The Jamaica board is headed by president Billy Heaven who reportedly has not always seen 'eye to eye' with Cameron.

Scooter startup Bolt nabs Bolt, the world's fastest man       Cache   Translate Page

E-scooters are not even legal yet in New York, but the field of players is already getting crowded.

The Miami-based startup Bolt Mobility held a press conference outside City Hall Tuesday morning to introduce its hardware while encouraging the push toward legalization. The star of the event, however, will probably not be Bolt's aluminum-frame scooter, which the company says is hardier, more stable and safer than the models offered by competitors.

The star will be the company's pitchman—the retired Jamaican sprinter, Usain Bolt, also known as the world's fastest man.

"The name came first and the connection came second," acknowledged co-founder Sarah Haynes. She added that Bolt liked the company's emphasis on sustainability and providing an equitable form of green transportation.

In an interview, she and Bolt's head of operations, former Tesla executive Will Nicholas, said that the startup launched its first service in Fort Lauderdale in November, but has benefited from being a latecomer by creating a scooter that answers some of the frequently heard complaints about comfort, stability and durability.

In addition to front-facing footrests and swappable batteries, the Bolt scooter is designed to last for up to a year, as opposed to the three-months that has been more or less the standard for a scooter getting heavy use.

Nicholas said the company would be establishing a team in New York. It will join Bird, Lime and Lyft, all of whom have been introducing new, sturdier scooters as well, in cities where the devices are allowed.

  • In 2018, 42 of the world's 50 most violent cities were in Latin America. Four were in the US, with another in Puerto Rico.
  • The region is the world's most violent, excluding war zones, with bloodshed driven by organized crime and exacerbated by chronic instability, poverty, and corruption.

In 2018, Latin America retained the ignominious distinction of being home to most of the cities on Mexico's Citizens' Council for Public Security's annual ranking of the world's most violent cities, released on Tuesday.

Of the 50 cities on the list, 42 are in Latin America. Fifteen were in Mexico, 14 in Brazil, and six in Venezuela. Two Colombian cities were on the list, as were two Honduran cities, and El Salvador, Guatemala, and Jamaica all had one. San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico, was also on the list.

Four US cities were listed: St. Louis, Baltimore, Detroit, and New Orleans.

Read last year's list: These were the 50 most violent cities in the world in 2017

The list is limited to cities with more than 300,000 people and doesn't include cities in war zones, such as Syria or Ukraine. The council said that went assessing cities, it sought to include "localities that form a unique urban system, clearly distinguishable from others, independent of the geographic-administrative divisions inside the countries."

Violence in Latin America is in large part driven by drug trafficking and organized crime. Insecurity is also exacerbated by political instability, poverty, and poor economic conditions. Corruption, abuses by officials, and impunity also facilitate crime.

Mexico has seen profound increases in deadly violence in recent years, driven in large part by the fragmentation of criminal groups. This year Mexico displaced Brazil as the country with the most cities on the list, despite Brazil having some 80 million more residents. One of Mexico's most popular tourist cities, Los Cabos, topped the list last year but is not on it this year, which the council attributes to one criminal group winning control of the area.

Incomplete data also challenges the council's tabulations, particularly in Venezuela, where the government has in the past not released homicide data, and where other estimates, such as those by newspapers, are incomplete or inconsistent.

Venezuela's "growing inability to count its dead" underscores the very serious crises it faces, the council states.

Allowing - 4/30/2008      Cache   Translate Page
Allowing Journal entry 4/30/2008: 1:30 am

Pay attention to Desmond. His grasp of consciousness will allow us to tap into the stream of source thought and make a bridge to a new reality. Sort of like in the movie Tron when they are traveling on the light beam that gets disrupted, but they are able to transfer to another.

We do not reach God through our intellect. Our thinking cannot take us the distance. It can get us close but we will be left just a little short of our desired result. Spirit felt, not thought will take us there. Intellect can't allow it does not trust, its domain is control. If we want bliss we must relinquish control and trust an inner nature. It is not about selecting, you are being guided. Intellect must be subdued, trained, mastered before you can make it to your true destination. It is not so much about thinking as it is about feeling. Thinking will keep you trapped. It is elaborate. The more information you receive the more that thought will keep your existence distracted. This other sense, your sixth sense and your feelings are that which guides you to your truth reality. It is only your reality but you will find that it changes everything.

It will be peaceful, relaxed and natural. There is no resistance. You must pay attention but not too much. Relax, allow the flow of consciousness. Intellect will pinch off the flow finally. It served its purpose until this point but it must relinquish command if you hope to go the last mile. If you let it, it will be the most comfortable, enjoyable process. Life is not about control. It is about allowing. Allowing the abundance that flows from infinite to fulfill and grow you. You are so much more than your accomplishments or possessions. Your relationships serve to guide you through the transitions. Allowing.

Post script explanation:
I was first introduced to Desmond in the fall of 2007, through our friend Yvette Dubel. During the first conference call (or second), Desmond said "So, you will be visiting us in Jamaica soon." All I could say was, "OK". In December of 2007 my entire life changed as I left my job at Texas A&M University, and on Jan. 1, 2008 I was in Colombia South America. A new chapter of my life began. It's an involved story. However, between a couple of trips to the US during that year, I did get to Jamaica. I have not been back since. Desmond and I had worked together some, I had written the original "Vision" for the Reverence for Life University, yet I had not physically met Desmond.

This essay, with several others included in the book "Your Breath - The Key" were my first experiences, that I can remember, sort of half-channeling writing. The following essay was written the second night that we were together at Robert Vassel's house. I woke up at 1:30 am and wrote the following, no changes, no corrections.

Reading it today amazes me as it is totally appropriate for what we are Sharing with the RFLU regarding "Breath Tapping" and putting the intellect into it's proper role.

Sodomy Laws in the US and around the World      Cache   Translate Page
A sodomy law is a law that defines certain sexual acts as crimes. The precise sexual acts meant by the term sodomy are rarely spelled out in the law, but are typically understood by courts to include any sexual act deemed to be "unnatural" or immoral. Sodomy typically includes anal sex, oral sex and bestiality. In practice, sodomy laws have rarely been enforced against heterosexual couples (Wikipedia)

Sodomy arrest sparks controversy… 34 years ago

Michael Hardwick is arrested for sodomy after a police officer observes him having sex with another man in his own bedroom in Georgia. Although the district attorney eventually dropped the charges, Hardwick decided to challenge the constitutionality of Georgia’s law.

“John and Mary Doe,” who joined in Hardwick’s suit against Michael Bowers, the attorney general of Georgia, maintained that the Georgia law “chilled and deterred” them from engaging in certain types of sex in their home. But in 1986, the Supreme Court handed down its decision in Bowers v. Hardwick, ruling by a 5-4 vote that states could continue to treat certain types of consensual sex as criminal acts.

Apparently, Justice Byron White had characterized the issue not as the right to privacy in one’s own bedroom, but rather as the right to commit sodomy. Viewed in this narrow manner, it was no surprise that he was unable to find such a clause in the Constitution. Justice Lewis Powell, who also voted to uphold the law, later called his vote a mistake.

In June 2003, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a Texas law under which two men had been arrested for having consensual sex at home. The 6-3 Lawrence v. Texas decision reversed the infamous 1986 Bowers decision and finally dealt a death blow to sodomy laws throughout the country.

In its landmark ruling Lawrence v. Texas, the Supreme Court ruled that anti-sodomy laws —sometimes referred to as “crimes against nature” laws — are unconstitutional. But 12 states continue to keep such laws on their books. Of 14 states that had anti-sodomy laws, only Montana and Virginia have repealed theirs since the Supreme Court ruling, while anti-sodomy laws remain on the books in Alabama, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas and Utah.

You may believe anti-sodomy laws are not harmful because they can’t be enforced. But they are an important symbol of homophobia for those who oppose LGBT rights. What’s more, the laws create ambiguity for police officers, who may not be aware they are unconstitutional.

If a policeman looks it up, he will see that sodomy is a violation of Louisiana state law, for example, according to Marjorie Esman, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana.

Sodomy Laws around the World

In the recent years, sodomy related laws have been repealed or judicially struck down in all of Europe, North America, and South America, except for Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago.

There have never been Western-style sodomy related laws in the People's Republic of China, Taiwan, North Korea, South Korea, or Vietnam. Additionally, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia were part of the French colony of 'Indochine'; so if there had been any laws against male homosexual acts in those countries, they would have been dismantled by French colonial authorities, since male homosexual acts have been legal in France and throughout the French Empire since the issuing of the aforementioned French Revolutionary penal code in 1791.

This trend among Western nations has not been followed in all other regions of the world (Africa, some parts of Asia, Oceania and even western countries in the Caribbean Islands), where sodomy often remains a serious crime. For example, male homosexual acts, at least in theory, can result in life imprisonment in Barbados and Guyana.

In Africa, male homosexual acts remain punishable by death in Mauritania, Sudan, and some parts of Nigeria and Somalia. Male and sometimes female homosexual acts are minor to major criminal offences in many other African countries; for example, life imprisonment is a prospective penalty in Sierra Leone, Tanzania and Uganda. A notable exception is South Africa, where same-sex marriage is legal.

In Asia, male homosexual acts remain punishable by death in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Brunei, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen; but anti-sodomy laws have been repealed in Israel (which recognizes but does not perform same-sex marriages), Japan, Kazakhstan, the Philippines, and Thailand. Additionally, life imprisonment is the formal penalty for male homosexual acts in Bangladesh, the Maldives, Myanmar, Pakistan, and Qatar.

Idris Elba Elevates Middling Material For His Directorial Debut “Yardie”      Cache   Translate Page
From time to time, it’s worth considering whether a director or a screenwriter has more influence over the final outcome of a film. Can a bad script undercut a good director? Is a good one able to hide the flaws of a bad filmmaker? The answer to both probably resides somewhere in between. The one thing I’m fairly certain of is this: a first time director can’t make do with a poor screenplay. Unfortunately for Idris Elba, the actor is making his directorial debut utilizing a script that’s lacking in juice. This makes Yardie, his first effort behind the camera, a step or two down from where it otherwise could have been. Elba shows some chops, but the material fails him throughout. He elevates it somewhat, but not enough to save the day. The film is a crime drama, with the sort of plot we’ve seen in this sort of picture all too often before. This is the synopsis provided by StudioCanal, who handled some of the international distribution: “Set in ’70s Kingston and ’80s Hackney, Yardie centres on the life of a young Jamaican man named D (Aml Ameen), who has never fully recovered from the murder, committed during his childhood, of his older brother Jerry Dread (Everaldo Creary). D grows up under the wing of a Kingston Don and music producer named King Fox (Sheldon Shepherd). Fox dispatches him to London, where he reconnects with his childhood sweetheart, Yvonne (Shantol Jackson), and his daughter who he’s not seen since she was a baby. He also hooks up with a soundclash crew, called High Noon. But before he can be convinced to abandon his life of crime and follow “the righteous path”, he encounters the man who shot his brother 10 years earlier, and embarks on a bloody, explosive quest for retribution – a quest which brings him into conflict with vicious London gangster Rico (Stephen Graham).” If it all sounds familiar, it comes off that way as well. Elba directs a screenplay by Brock Norman Brock and Martin Stellman, while the cast also includes Antwayne Eccleston, Fraser James, and more. Dickon Hinchliffe composed the score, while the cinematography is by John Conroy. I needed just a bit more from this movie than what I got. Elba is undercut by a mediocre script, dulling his otherwise solid filmmaking style. It weighs him down and prevents this from being a success. It’s [...]

          Eosinophilic meningitis      Cache   Translate Page

Eosinophilic meningitis: Meningitis with a high percentage of eosinophils (a type of white blood cell) in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The usual cause is the parasite Angiostrongylus cantonensis, also known as the rat lungworm.

People become infected with this parasite by ingesting its larvae in raw or insufficiently cooked snails, slugs, freshwater prawns, frogs, or fish. Infection may also occur by consumption of fresh produce such as contaminated lettuce. When the larvae are ingested, they penetrate the intestinal tract, go into blood vessels, and eventually reach the meninges (the covering of the brain and spinal cord). The larvae usually die there shortly thereafter. An eosinophilic reaction develops in response to the dying larvae. It is manifested by an outpouring of eosinophils in the CSF.

Most cases of eosinophilic meningitis due to A. cantonensis have been reported in SE Asia and the Pacific Basin. However, in 2002 an outbreak of eosinophilic meningitis was reported in the US. The outbreak struck 12 young adults after they had returned from a trip to Jamaica. Symptoms included headache, neck pain, visual disturbances, and hyperesthesias. Nine of the travelers required hospitalization. A case-control study showed that consumption of a Caesar salad at one dinner was strongly associated with the development of the eosinophilic meningitis.

Most cases of eosinophilic meningitis due to A. cantonensis are self-limited and resolve without complications. However, neurologic sequelae do develop in some cases, and deaths have been reported from the disease.

Comment on Don’t promote Barbados-type Brexit, says political scientist by Tennyson Drakes      Cache   Translate Page
People the word is "parity". That is what is required before their is any justification of any free movement of people in the Caribbean. When Guyana and Jamaica dollar was worth $4.80 to the Barbados dollar it made sense for Barbadians to have gone to Guyana and possibly Jamaica. That is human nature. The main reason why it is easy for the eastern Caribbean nationals to travel freely among themselves is the parity of their currency. It is common to all of them. Also, when a glass is full and you keep on adding water, the water is only wasted. Barbados is 166 square miles. It is one of one of the most densely populated countries in the world.
Supreme Court: second or subsequent human rights claims do not attract automatic right of appeal      Cache   Translate Page
Supeme Court GuildhallThe Supreme Court has finally laid to rest the argument (advanced by me amongst others) that second or subsequent human rights or asylum claims automatically attract a right of appeal under the appeal regime of the Immigration Act 2014. They don’t, say their lordships. The meaning of “human rights claim” in section 82 as amended is to be read as “original human rights claim”. It follows that “protection claim” should be read in the same way. The case is Robinson v Secretary of State for the Home Department [2019] UKSC 11 (formerly known as JR (Jamaica)). Lord Lloyd-Jones gives the leading judgment. Much as it pains me to say it,...

Just last week I was talking to a friend of mine in Barbados and she was talking about an incident that occurred in Westmoreland ,Jamaica between a taxi driven and a woman. The taxi driver had apparently put his entire hand into the woman's private parts searching for money that he thought that she had stolen and hidden from him. Well my bajan friend said " dah es why I doan want to go to jamaica 'cause dem people over dey damn bad". Now what is the comparison between "dem damn bad jamaiacans" and the Barbadian who took this man's life ?

Ossie Moore : As a person who has lived in many countries ( including Barbados ) and who has and continues to travel the world , and also as a person who comments on articles in many foreign media organisations. It surprises me how Barbadians of all people that I know and have met " bad mouth " every other country in the world especially Jamaica , Guyana , Trinidad and the USA when their own country is just " as bad" as the others that they are bad mouthing. Most Barbadians like to throw stones while they themselves live in glass houses.

Apareceram diversas variações do tumblr "original".

Official Music Video | Major Lazer - Watch Out For This (Bumaye) (DJ Maphorisa & DJ Raybel Remix)

As a mashup between Gqom styles of South Africa and the futuristic Dancehall of Jamaica the Bumaye remix video takes place between the Rastafarian Dancehalls of Cape Town South Africa and the taxi ranks and salons of Bellville and Woodstock where the Pan-African nature of South Africa and the Gqom sounds are present. Capturing the vibrant and diverse culture of these spaces the crew decided to take dancers from different styles and subcultures for the video in this way showing the evolution of the style and remix culture in Gqom and Dancehall in Cape Town. Showing a different side to the city than normally seen. Taking reference from Nollywood aesthetics and analog video effects the video is also a blending of old and new, the spiritual and club space. The main aim being to highlight the talent, fashion, beauty and communities in Cape Town our hometown.

Centennial celebrations, coast to coast      Cache   Translate Page

As The American Legion prepares to celebrate its 100th anniversary on March 15, American Legion posts, districts and departments are preparing to host their own centennial events for months. Some events are focusing on The American Legion’s 100th birthday, while others are tying the event in with other American Legion programs.

Florida is using the latter as its way to celebrate. American Legion Riders will participate in a 100-mile ride March 16 to both honor the Legion’s centennial and raise funds for Post 375 in Southport, Fla., which was destroyed by Hurricane Michael last fall. Rides are expected to take place statewide, including a ride to and from Post 10 in Kissimmee. And as part of 100th birthday activities at Post 63 in Winter Garden, Fla., American Legion members will present a flag to the father of a fallen soldier. The father’s previous flag was lost in a house fire.

And in Kansas, American Legion Pearce-Keller Post 17 in Manhattan is hosting both the department’s 100th birthday event and Oratorical Contest on March 16. About seven orators will compete in the morning for a chance to be named the Department of Kansas Oratorical winner and advance to The American Legion’s National Oratorical Contest in Indianapolis April 5-7. Following the competition, a birthday dinner will be held with hundreds of Legion Family members. Birthday dinner remarks will be provided by Department of Kansas Commander Dan Wiley, Auxiliary President Karen Hasting and Sons of The American Legion Detachment Commander Terry Harris.

In Texas, Royse City American Legion Post 100 will host a community celebration of The American Legion’s birthday on March 16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Military Heritage Museum. There will be free food, kids’ games and activities, and free military vehicle rides. At 12:30 p.m., there will be a showing of “Sgt. Stubby,” an animated movie about a World War I Army dog that became an American Legion member. Additionally, the Auxiliary unit will host a poppy coloring booth for children.

While some American Legion posts and districts already have celebrated The American Legion centennial, many events are still to come.           Belated Book Hauls!!!      Cache   Translate Page

Seriously, I've been remiss in making note of the books that have been coming in.  And they are so interesting and I'm very anxious to get to them, so I need to share with you....

I have been taking it easy this past couple of months because I haven't been well, actually.  I was diagnosed with an acoustic neuroma, a benign brain tumor which affects the nerves having to do with hearing, the face and balance.  I had a series of Cyberknife radiation treatments to halt the growth and kill the tumor the end of Sept., and have been dealing with the side-effects since then.  I've completely lost my hearing in my left ear which has been a horrifying thing for me...and unexpected.  And, I'm now getting physical therapy for vertigo and balance issues.  What do I mean by vertigo?  It's as if I've been twirled around on a swing and then let go!  My head is often just wonky, so my balance is off slightly.  When I walk sometimes I look like I'm a bit tipsy.  It's not like this all the time, Thank God!!   I'm learning to live with these side effects, and hoping the tumor will shrink and go away in the coming months.  They tell me it can take up to 2 years.

Meanwhile, you may have noticed my reading and reviewing has slowed up a bit to compensate for this issue.  I'm not taking on as many books a week as I was in the past.  But, thankfully, this situation has nothing to do with and does not affect my ability to read, write and reason!!  All of that is as normal...for whatever that's worth!!  We can't blame the tumor for my opinions and thoughts!  :]

So, on to the books in my 3 Month Haul!  I hope you enjoy seeing what's new and coming soon to the book shops:

Introducing Alice Quentin, a London psychologist with family baggage, who finds herself at the center of a grisly series of murders

Alice Quentin is a psychologist with some painful family secrets, but she has a good job, a good-looking boyfriend, and excellent coping skills, even when that job includes evaluating a convicted killer who’s about to be released from prison. One of the highlights of her day is going for a nice, long run around her beloved London—it's impossible to fret or feel guilty about your mother or brother when you're concentrating on your breathing—until she stumbles upon a dead body at a former graveyard for prostitutes, Crossbones Yard.

Midnight is the most bewitching hour of them all…

From Paula Brackston, the New York Times bestselling author of The Witch’s Daughter and The Winter Witch, comes a magical tale that is as dark as it is enchanting.  Set in high society Edwardian England, The Midnight Witch is the story of a young witch who faces the choice between love and loyalty to her coven…

A richly imagined, gorgeously written historical novel set in the Stuart court featuring a unique hero: Jeffrey Hudson, a dwarf tasked with spying on the beautiful but vulnerable queen.

It's 1629, and King Charles I and his French queen Henrietta Maria have reigned in England for less than three years. Young dwarf Jeffrey Hudson is swept away from a village shambles and plunged into the Stuart court when his father sells him to the most hated man in England—the Duke of Buckingham. Buckingham trains Jeffrey to be his spy in the household of Charles’ seventeen-year-old bride, hoping to gain intelligence that will help him undermine the vivacious queen’s influence with the king.

Elizabeth Loupas returns with her most ambitious historical novel yet, a story of intrigue, passion, and murder in the Medici Court...

April, 1574, Florence, Italy. Grand Duke Cosimo de’ Medici lies dying. The city is paralyzed with dread, for the next man to wear the red lily crown will be Prince Francesco: despotic, dangerous, and obsessed with alchemy.

Chiara Nerini, the troubled daughter of an anti-Medici bookseller, sets out to save her starving family by selling her dead father’s rare alchemical equipment to the prince. Instead she is trapped in his household—imprisoned and forcibly initiated as a virgin acolyte in Francesco’s quest for power and immortality. Undaunted, she seizes her chance to pursue undreamed-of power of her own.

Tolstoy wrote, "Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." This is the statement that inspired bestselling author Gretchen Rubin to wonder whether she could foster an even greater happiness in her home. During The Happiness Project, the same questions kept tugging at her. How can I raise happy children? How can I maintain a tender, romantic relationship with my spouse--after fifteen years of marriage? How do I keep my Blackberry from taking over my private life? How can I foster a well-ordered, light-hearted atmosphere in my house, when no one else will lift a finger to cooperate?

This book is Gretchen's account of her second journey in pursuit of happiness. Prescriptive, easy-to-follow, and anecdotal, Happier at Home offers readers a way of thinking and being that is positive and life-affirming. With specific examples following the calendar year, an intimate voice, and drawing from science and pop culture, this book will resonate with anyone looking to strengthen the bonds of family.

The year is 1729, and Resolute Talbot and her siblings are captured by pirates, taken from their family in Jamaica, and brought to the New World.

For fans of Meg Wolitzer and Allegra Goodman, an intimate and provocative novel about three couples whose paths intersect in their New York City neighborhood, forcing them all to weigh the comfort of stability against the costs of change.

Nina is a harried young mother who spends her evenings spying on the older couple across the street through her son’s Fisher-Price binoculars. She is drawn to their quiet contentment—reading on the couch, massaging each other’s feet—so unlike her own lonely, chaotic world of nursing and soothing and simply getting by. One night, through that same window, she spies a young couple in the throes of passion. Who are these people, and what happened to her symbol of domestic bliss?

"Every child knows how the story ends. The wicked pirate captain is flung overboard, caught in the jaws of the monster crocodile who drags him down to a watery grave. But it was not yet my time to die. It's my fate to be trapped here forever, in a nightmare of childhood fancy, with that infernal, eternal boy."

Meet Captain James Benjamin Hook, a witty, educated Restoration-era privateer cursed to play villain to a pack of malicious little boys in a pointless war that never ends. But everything changes when Stella Parrish, a forbidden grown woman, dreams her way to the Neverland in defiance of Pan’s rules. From the glamour of the Fairy Revels, to the secret ceremonies of the First Tribes, to the mysterious underwater temple beneath the Mermaid Lagoon, the magical forces of the Neverland open up for Stella as they never have for Hook. And in the pirate captain himself, she begins to see someone far more complex than the storybook villain.

The mesmerizing story of Hillary Clinton's political rebirth, based on eyewitness accounts from deep inside her inner circle Hillary Clinton’s surprising defeat in the 2008 Democratic primary brought her to the nadir of her political career, vanquished by a much younger opponent whose message of change and cutting-edge tech team ran circles around her stodgy campaign. And yet, six years later, she has reemerged as an even more powerful and influential figure, a formidable stateswoman and the presumed front-runner for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination, marking one of the great political comebacks in history.

Elder Soares Visit Highlights God's Promised Blessings Being Claimed in the Caribbean       Cache   Translate Page

“I see a great future for the Church in the Caribbean Area. They are good people who are dedicated to their families and their desire to serve the Lord.”Missionaries first arrived on Curaçao in 1978 and the island’s first branch was created in October of 1979. Growth followed the 1982 decision to conduct Church meetings in Papiamento. The Curaçao meetinghouse was dedicated in August 1988. Families gather for a February 17 member meeting in Santiago, Dominican Republic, presided over by Elder Ulisses Soares.“When we read in the scriptures about the ‘isles of the sea’ we tend to think of, maybe, the Pacific or other parts of the world,” said Elder Teixeira. “But the Caribbean Area is also truly the ‘isles of the sea.’ With the exception of the three countries on the northern tip of South America (Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana), everything else is an island.”During the meeting, a pair of Curaçao “pioneers”—Ingeborg Zielinski Reni and Yvonne Antersijn—shared experiences from their decades of resolute Church service and dedication in a “corner of the vineyard” still young and largely undeveloped.Dedicating the country and worshipping with the Curaçao members “was a beautiful experience,” said Elder Soares.Prior to the 1978 revelation that gave all people full access to the blessings of the priesthood and the temple, the Church was all but non-existent in the Caribbean—a region with a large population of people of African descent.“You can see the influence of these two great sisters on the island,” said Elder Soares. The February 16 leadership meetings in Santiago, Dominican Republic, offered further glimpses into the hearts, minds, and capacity of the Caribbean Area members. They are “happy people” focused on the gospel and the guidance offered by President Russell M. Nelson and their other leaders. That mixture reflects the rich wonders defining the tens of thousands of Latter-day Saints living across the vast Caribbean Area, Elder Ulisses Soares told the Church News following his recent visit to the region.Elder Soares noted the relative “newness” of the Church in the Dominican Republic and other Caribbean nations.A traveler can drop in on a Relief Society or Sunday School lesson in, say, the Dominican Republic, and hear the gospel taught in Spanish. Drive across the border into Haiti and expect to hear that same message in Haitian Creole or French.Dedicating Curaçao Elder Ulisses Soares bids farewell to Latter-day Saints who gathered for a February 21 member meeting in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. On February 20, Elder Soares dedicated the island nation of Curaçao for the preaching of the gospel. Members, missionaries, local journalists, and many others from the community gathered in the branch meetinghouse in the capital of Willemstad to listen to the visiting Apostle’s dedicatory prayer and counsel. The region’s linguistic diversity signals its rich history and culture. Many Caribbeans will greet you with a Buenos dias—while others will offer a Bonjou, a Good morning, or even a Goedemorgen.Enjoying Christ’s gospel“The Church has a great future in Curaçao,” he added. “The people are faithful and willing to receive the gospel. ... I could see in their eyes the hope that the gospel brings to them.”“There is a diversity in that area that is very attractive and beautiful to see,” he said. “There is a mixture of cultures—you have influences from all over the world.”

A young man attends February 21, 2019, member meeting in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, presided over by Elder Ulisses Soares.

The area’s only temple—the Santo Domingo Dominican Republic Temple—was dedicated almost 20 years ago. But that’s about to change.“They asked about how they could become closer to Christ and how they could show Christlike love to one another. They wanted to know how they can utilize the power of the Holy Ghost. They asked questions about issues related to their families and their youth,” reported Elder Teixeira.History was also made in the Caribbean during an Apostle’s visit. Elder Ulisses Soares offers counsel during February 16, 2019, meeting with elders and sisters from the Santiago Dominican Republic Mission.Planning a Latter-day Saint-themed tour across the Caribbean? You’d be wise to download a versatile translation app.For many Latter-day Saint Caribbeans, traveling to the Santo Domingo temple “is not easy,” said Elder Soares. Members from Trinidad and Tobago, for example, often have to fly to Miami, Florida, and then boomerang back to the Dominican Republic and visit the temple. Such travels exact both time and money. That island culture, he added, is embodied by kindness, families, and hard work. It’s an ideal, promised land for the gospel to flourish and grow.“The Caribbean members are focused on strengthening their family in the gospel,” he said. “There is great joy—the people are enjoying the gospel of Jesus Christ in their lives. Elder José A. Teixeira and Elder Ulisses Soares greet missionaries from the Santiago Dominican Republic Mission to a February 16 missionary meeting. They were joined at many events by the Caribbean Area Presidency—Elder Walter F. González, Elder José L. Alonso, and Elder Eduardo Gavarret. The Port-au-Prince Haiti Temple is expected to be dedicated this year. Meanwhile, hurricane-battered Latter-day Saints in Puerto Rico are still celebrating last fall’s announcement to build a temple in the capital city of San Juan.A former Miss Curaçao, Zielinski Reni joined the Church in Holland in 1970. When she returned to her native land she hosted an hourly radio program, frequently drawing upon family home evening lessons and other gospel messages. She became the face of the Church for many on the island. But most important, the diverse Caribbean members remain anchored to their shared devotion to the Lord’s Church. “We learned of their faith and their desire to learn the gospel of Jesus Christ,” said Elder Soares.

Sister missionaries enjoy a February 16, 2019, devotional in Santiago, Dominican Republic, presided over by Elder Ulisses Soares.

Elder Soares’ 11-day tour (February 14–24) marked his first visit to the Caribbean Area. The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles member was accompanied by Elder José A. Teixeira of the Presidency of the Seventy, along with their wives, Sister Rosana Soares and Sister Filomena Teixeira. Elder Soares and other visiting Brethren and their wives with the Santiago Dominican Republic Mission on February 16, 2019.English, meanwhile, is spoken in Jamaica, Barbados, The Bahamas, and several other island nations. And in the baseball-mad lands of Aruba and Curaçao, you will hear chatter in both Dutch and Papiamento.Reviewing plans for the future temples were key highlights for the visiting Brethren during their annual area review of the Caribbean Area (February 18-19). Elder Soares and Elder Teixeira also participated in ministering-focused leadership meetings for local priesthood and auxiliary leaders. They presided over member meetings and met with missionaries serving in various nations—including a tender gathering of missionaries in the Dominican Republic mourning the recent death of Elder Brennan Conrad.“It was beautiful to see how many of the members have received the ordinances of the temple, and I praised them for their sacrifices,” he said.Dynamic moments for Caribbean SaintsElder Soares’ and Elder Teixeira’s recent travels came at a dynamic moment in the Caribbean Area.

Climate Change: Tropical Tastes at Three New Bars      Cache   Translate Page
by Thomas Ross

I try to be a glass-half-full kind of person. By which I mean, when someone complains about something, I tell them to take a sip of my cocktail and to shut the hell up. Yes, it’s cold outside, and no one has yet devised a little hat for the tip of your nose, but within the confines of the glass of rum and tropical fruit in my right hand, it’s 80 degrees and sunny.

Tucked into a back room down the hall from the Woodlark Hotel’s lobby is the hotel’s bar: Abigail Hall. Subtler but by no means less interesting than Bullard—the Woodlark’s streetside restaurant with a Texas-sized personality—Abigail Hall was named by owner Jennifer Quist for the Portland suffragette and novelist Abigail Scott Duniway, and the space still shows off many of the features it did when it was a women’s reception hall in what was then the Cornelius Hotel.

It’s difficult to describe the design of Abigail Hall. Pulling together its historical legacy with touches of midcentury and decidedly contemporary materials, like any good novel (Duniway wrote the first novel ever published in Oregon), its idiosyncrasy feels timeless, like a throwback to itself. The actual bar feels like a smallish window into a coat check, while the fireplace is full of candles and framed artifacts.

The drinks follow the same recipe as the design, something like the inverse of irreverence: An amaro-driven cocktail called Ghost Write the Quip makes me professionally jealous as a writer; the L’Aventura is a beautiful mound of crushed ice, rose petals, vodka, vermouth, and amaro; and the Marcy is a small shot of tequila, a tiny beer, and a slip of paper with a dirty joke on it (most cocktails here are $12-14; the Marcy is $6).

There are multiple straight-up versions of long drinks—like a vodka gimlet made with a Red Bull reduction, or what we really came here for: the Dog Will Hunt, a Fernet and Coke in a martini glass. Starring a charred pineapple infused Fernet-Branca and undefined “cola spices,” it tastes like Fernet and Coke, but drinks like a sable coat.

Across the river, another supergroup is in action: Thai food star Earl Ninsom, Matt’s BBQ pitmaster Matt Vicedomini, and Shipwreck cocktail popper-upper Eric Nelson have finally opened the hotly anticipated Eem and are slinging Thai barbecue and Tiki drinks to the North Williams corridor in Jenn Louis’ old digs at Williams and Going.

The cocktails are lavishly presented, often in so-goofy-it’s-elegant ceramic blowfish or shell-shaped glasses, and they all rely on big flavors to stand up to the spicy curries and smoky meats flying out of the kitchen. While many are delicious, it’s hard not to recommend the banana blendy as long as we’re on a tropical fruit kick: A solid frozen daiquiri with that potassium kick you know you need, it looks like a milkshake and hits the spot like one, too.

Expecting you to come thirsty and with thirsty companions, Eem will serve certain cocktails in double-sized two-straw situations. Of these, the Abracadabra is a favorite: funky Jamaican rum, smoky scotch whisky, some pineapple, tamarind, and even a little coffee makes for a complex, spicy, bitter, sour, and sweet cocktail that can stand up to any dish on the menu.

{{image:1, align:right, width:250}}

Speaking of bananas, another splashy new spot is bringing some serious cocktail game to the Beaumont neighborhood: Wonderly seems to have made its home by plastering a spread from Kinfolk magazine over a storefront on Fremont (next to one of owners Kate and Alex Wood’s other bars, Bang Bang), and serves up classics in extra-large formats (see the Manhattan-and-a-half and the Martini-and-a-half) alongside some weirder fare.

Bananas make an appearance in the Banhattan, a drink whose name we will forgive only because it tastes like what your grandpa wishes bananas foster tasted like: a bourbon Manhattan with banana liqueur and a torch-caramelized banana on top.

If it’s too early for dessert, consider the Smith and Cross negroni, which pairs that heady Jamaican rum with a house blend of vermouths and Campari for a bracingly intense but wholly delicious drink. I’ve tried and tried to find another description, but it recalls exactly the experience of pool water rushing up your nose after the perfect cannonball. See? It’s always summer.

The 37 Best Movies and Shows to Watch in Portland This Week: March 15-21      Cache   Translate Page
by Mercury Things to Do Staff

Alita: Battle Angel
I have never recommended seeing a movie in 3D, let alone IMAX 3D, because films should either succeed in 2D or they aren’t worth seeing. But for Alita: Battle Angel, I will—for the first time—tell you to splurge on the IMAX. With this visually stunning adaptation of Yukito Kishiro’s manga, we should applaud Alita’s depth, not split hairs over the titular character’s oversized anime eyes—which, in the film, are irresistibly beautiful. (Now playing, various theaters) SUZETTE SMITH

Ash Is Purest White
Director Jia Zhang-Ke’s Ash Is Purest White is a gangster epic interrupted. Qiao (Zhao Tao) is the girlfriend of mobster Bin (Liao Fan), and the insular, unstable underworld of the northern Chinese city of Datong is their oyster. It’s mostly a life of cigarettes and mahjong, but eventually Bin’s power is challenged, in a scintillatingly choreographed fight scene that will tear the top of your head off. The rest of the movie is much more subdued, as Qiao roams a culturally and economically changing China for two decades, trying to figure out where she belongs. It’s far more poetic and surprising than that sounds—and it’s occasionally daffy, too, with a UFO showing up for a split-second. (Opens Fri March 22, Fox Tower 10) NED LANNAMANN

Birds of Passage
Review forthcoming at portlandmercury.com/film. (Opens Fri March 22, Living Room Theaters)

Captain Marvel
Captain Marvel is a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, and MCU movies are generally good-to-excellent, and Captain Marvel is no different. It’s smart, funny, and deliriously self-aware, and there are a bunch of cool explosions. It’s great! There you go! Review over! “But wait,” you say. “It is different. Aren’t you going to mention... [points at boobs, from one to the other, back and forth, maintaining eye contact, making things weird]?” Ugh, FINE. I’ll say it: Yes, Carol is a woman, and this is the first Marvel movie centered on a woman. In that sense, this is different from the stuff that came before it! It’s even better! I’ve really enjoyed my Bruce Bannerses and Steve Rogerses, but I liked my Carol Danvers even more. It was great to see someone who looked like me straight-up destroy alien bad guys. (Now playing, various theaters) ELINOR JONES

Captive State
A kinda-Cloverfield-y, sorta District 9-ish sci-fi drama about aliens occupying Chicago, and the struggles of both the occupiers and the occupied. Written and directed by the guy who made Rise of the Planet of the Apes and was subsequently replaced by a guy who made two way better sequels. Not screened for critics. (Opens Fri March 15, various theaters)

Castle in the Sky
The word “genius” gets batted around with regard to filmmakers with a numbing, reductive frequency. But if Hayao Miyazaki doesn’t qualify for that title, who does? Since making his directorial debut with 1979’s The Castle of Cagliostro, Miyazaki has blazed his own distinct trail, blending atomic-clock action timing with an awe-inspiring, hand-rendered sense of the infinite. Nobody else can balance exhilarating weightlessness with moral gravity in quite the same proportions. (Fri March 22-Thurs March 28, Academy Theater) ANDREW WRIGHT

Climax
With Climax, controversy-courting director Gaspar Noé—the enfant terrible behind Irreversible, Enter the Void, and Love—does everything within his power to fuck with viewers’ perceptions. The movie begins with the final moments of the story to come, followed quickly by the closing credits (running backwards, naturally). About a third of the way into the film, he drops the eye-popping opening credits, and throughout, Benoît Debie’s camera dips, rolls, and spins. Climax is Noé’s most palatable film to date, in spite of his usual predelictions for both pretention and forcing his female characters to suffer constant violence and abuse. (Now playing, Cinema 21) ROBERT HAM

The Dirt
What better combination than the director of the Jackass trilogy and the writer of 2005’s pick-up bible The Game to tell the story of Mötley Crüe, the skeeviest hair metal band the ‘80s ever yarked into a tape deck. Despite the universe’s best efforts to keep this skidmarked stripe of music history tucked under Vince Neil’s strained leather pants (this film’s been in various stages of production since 2007), Netflix decided this sordid tale of sustained mediocrity needed to be cinematically realized. We’re a long way from Roma, ladies and gentlemen. Starring Machine Gun Kelly as Tommy Lee aaaaaand you just broke out in weird hives, sorry. (Streams Fri March 22, Netflix)

Fantastic Planet
A 1973 film collaboration between French and Czech animators, Fantastic Planet’s based on a science fiction novel by Stefan Wul called Oms en Série, but the movie’s theme has a lot to do with Czechoslovakia’s occupation by Soviet forces in the late ’60s, which brought about the close of the Prague Spring era. In the film, a race of blue giants, called Draags, co-exist with the human-like Oms. Oms are either considered by Draags to be mice-like pests or are kept captive as cute little pets, while the Draags are an enlightened, intelligent race with a sophisticated government and extensive rituals of mediation. Yet they consider Oms to be inferior beings, perhaps because of their size. (Cue allegory.) The story holds up completely, but the imagery is what’s really amazing: Although the animation itself is choppy and primitive, the drawings are nothing short of spectacular. It’s been described as a mixture of Salvador Dali, Hieronymous Bosch, and Terry Gilliam, and that drool-inducing assessment is not far off. There’s also a swanky ’70s progressive rock score, which is awesome and hilarious at the same time. (Madlib sampled the shit out of it.) (Sat March 16, Hollywood Theatre) NED LANNAMANN

{{image:2}}

Fargo
“This is a true story. The events depicted in this film took place in Minnesota in 1987. At the request of the survivors, the names have been changed. Out of respect for the dead, the rest has been told exactly as it occurred.” (Fri March 13-Thurs March 21, Academy Theater)

Fighting with My Family
A heartfelt family wrestling movie from the comedy writer partly responsible for the UK version of The Office? The quality of Stephen Merchant’s directorial debut was never going to be as preordained as the outcome of a pro-wrestling match, but this scrappy underdog might be the most charming, entertaining movie of the young year. The phenomenal Florence Pugh plays real-life wrestler Paige, who went from the youngest in a working-class wrestling family in Norwich, England, to a WWE superstar. Her journey, with family conflicts and self-confidence issues, is not an especially unpredictable one, but Merchant gets every note exactly right, from producer Dwayne Johnson’s appearance as himself to Paige’s rough but irresistibly loveable family (Lena Dunham, Nick Frost, and Jack Lowden). Vince Vaughn as Paige’s coach, too, is perfectly cast—for once—and the movie’s one of those miraculous things that makes you laugh and cry and clap for joy. It just works. (Now playing, various theaters) NED LANNAMANN

Five Feet Apart
A proof-of-concept motion picture testing the hypothesis that John Green doesn’t have to write a book about terminally ill teenagers falling in love before one can make a film with that premise. Directed by the CW’s Justin Baldoni (Jane the Virgin) and starring the CW’s Cole Sprouse (Riverdale) and ABC Family’s Haley Lu Richardson (Recovery Road). Not screened for critics. (Opens Fri March 15, various theaters)

Gloria Bell
Anybody who’s seen Gloria—the 2013 Chilean film from A Fantastic Woman director Sebastián Lelio—will feel some major déjà-vu watching Gloria Bell, a remake set in Los Angeles and starring Julianne Moore, in which Lelio recreates the original almost shot-for-shot. As someone who’s seen both, I’m going to be honest: I didn’t like Gloria Bell as much as Gloria. But it’s still great! Gloria works at an insurance company by day, spends her nights dancing at a disco-themed singles bar, and struggles to cede control in her relationships with her adult children. But Moore’s portrayal of the divorcée reveals the nuances of her personality and the complexity of her seemingly unremarkable middle-aged existence, whether she’s doing laughter therapy, dunking her boyfriend’s phone in soup, or walking barefoot through Caesars Palace. (Throughout the film, Gloria’s mood can be gauged by whether she’s belting along to ’80s hits in her car or driving in silence, along with her willingness to coexist with a Sphynx cat that keeps mysteriously appearing in her apartment.) Though Gloria ostensibly centers on a new romance, the reality is far more interesting: Lelio’s film captures an internal tide change with unexpectedly transformative results, and is a joyful celebration of the world’s countless Glorias. (Opens Fri March 22, various theaters) CIARA DOLAN

Greta
Chloë Grace Moretz plays Frances, a recent transplant to New York City who’s grieving the death of her mother and perhaps unconsciously seeking a bond with a surrogate maternal figure. Enter Isabelle Huppert, Queen of France, who plays the titular Greta—a lonely widow with shiny black fingernails filed into points, a habit of leaving stylish leather purses on the subway, and a daughter-shaped hole in her heart. Greta is billed as a “twisted little thriller,” and if you don’t take it seriously, it’s 98 minutes of campy fun riffing on the trope that naïve newcomers will get “eaten alive” by New York City. But under closer examination, it’s just another example of a harmful narrative in which young women are violently punished for trusting a stranger. I think we see enough of that in real life. House of Flying Daggers
In the early 2000s, there was a brief love affair between mainstream American cinema and the wuxia epics of China, sparked by the critical and financial success of Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and extended through the efforts of director Zhang Yimou, who made Hero and this film back-to-back. Daggers is arguably the most visually striking of the three, and definitely the least coherent. It's to Yimou's credit as a visual storyteller that narrative coherence ain't shit when there's this much kinetic beauty in every frame. None of what's happening really makes any sense, but the intended feelings kick you in your chest all the same. Screens on 35mm. (Fri March 15-Sun March 17, Fifth Avenue Cinema) BOBBY ROBERTS

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
Heads up: If you’ve ever owned a dog, a cat, or a dragon, the final 20 minutes or so of How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World will reduce you to a wheezing, weeping, snot-soaked wreck, and because this will happen at the very end of the movie, as soon as you stumble out of the theater, everyone is going to know that a children’s movie about friendly dragons just reduced you to a wheezing, weeping, snot-soaked wreck, and this is a thing you will have to deal with for the rest of your life. Another heads up: The rest of the movie isn’t very good. ERIK HENRIKSEN (Now playing, various theaters)

Isn’t It Romantic
In Isn’t It Romantic, Natalie (Rebel Wilson) is unlucky in love... until she suffers a blow to the noggin that transforms her world! It’s impossible for me to explain how much I absolutely loved this movie without reminding myself (and everyone else) how much I hated the last romcom about a woman who suffered a brain injury that altered her reality: Amy Schumer’s I Feel Pretty. But Isn’t It Romantic is everything that I Feel Pretty wasn’t: it’s smart, it’s hilarious, and most importantly, it doesn’t punch down. Plus, it has what I never realized every film needs, which is a bare-chested Liam Hemsworth playing the saxophone. (Now playing, various theaters) ELINOR JONES

The Kid
Remember that crummy remake of The Magnificent Seven from a couple of years ago? Three of its titular septet—Ethan Hawke, Chris Pratt, and Vincent D’Onofrio—have reteamed for another western, perhaps to make up for the shortcomings of their previous attempt. While The Kid isn’t exactly good enough to right past wrongs, it’s a mildly diverting entry into a genre that you either love or don’t give a shit about. In other words, it’s a western, and if you love westerns, you’ll get something out of The Kid. Everyone else should probably just go see Captain Marvel. The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part
The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part squarely occupies (sorry!) a middle ground between the first The Lego Movie and The Lego Batman Movie: The premise is played, but there’s still some fun to be had, and you can see it with your kids. The sneaky bold messaging of the first film isn’t present here, and the morality slides off after 15 minutes so. But it’s nice that the movie tried to teach me how to share, even though the message probably won’t stick. (Now playing, various theaters) SUZETTE SMITH

Love, Death & Robots
David Fincher teams up with Deadpool director and visual effects artist Tim Miller for a Netflix collection of sci-fi animated shorts for mature audiences. Back in 2012, Fincher and Miller raised over $400,000 on Kickstarter to fund the preproduction of The Goon, a mature-audiences animated feature based on Eric Powell’s comic book—only to ghost from that project, leaving backers hanging. (Was I one of those left-hanging backers? Why yes, yes I was.) While Love, Death & Robots wasn’t screened for Portland critics, here’s hoping this promising project has a better fate than the poor old Goon. (Streams Fri March 15, Netflix) ERIK HENRIKSEN

Narcissister Organ Player
PICA presents this self-directed documentary by the titular performance artist, known for her masks, merkins, and her blending of comedy, costuming, and eroticism. Part of the Hollywood Theatre’s 2019 Feminist March film series. (Mon March 18, Hollywood Theatre)

Obvious Child
A great abortion romcom, starring the great Jenny Slate. Part of the Hollywood Theatre’s 2019 Feminist March film series. (Fri March 22, Hollywood Theatre) WM. STEVEN HUMPHREY

Portland International Film Festival
PIFF stretches into its second week, and there’ll be plenty of cinema from around the world to broaden your horizons. Our picks include China’s inverted gangster epic Ash Is Purest White (Thurs March 14), Germany’s meta World War II mystery Transit (Fri March 15), Kenya’s lively, uplifting Supa Modo (Sat March 16), England’s gorgeously miserable Ray & Liz (Sun March 17), and the locally made documentary Worlds of Ursula K. Le Guin (Sun March 17 & Mon March 18). (Through Thurs March 21, Cinema 21, Cinemagic, Fox Tower 10, NW Film Center’s Whitsell Auditorium, OMSI Empirical Theater) NED LANNAMANN

Portland Oregon Women’s Film Festival (POW Film Fest)
Portland’s annual collection of work from women filmmakers. For more, check out the next issue of the Mercury on Wednesday, March 27. (Wed March 27-Sun March 31, various theaters)

Queer Horror: The Stepford Wives
The Hollywood’s bimonthly Queer Horror series is a goddamn Portland treasure, featuring scary flicks with an LGBT bent. March’s offering is The Stepford Wives, because... well, let’s hear host Carla Rossi tell it: “I actually saw The Stepford Wives for the first time this last December and it blew my mind, thanks to the relationship between Katharine Ross’ Joanna and Paula Prentiss’ Bobbie. Their friendship feels so real and earnest and is completely independent of the men in the film, and the destruction of that friendship by their husbands is a gut-wrenching tragedy. For a satirical ’70s paranoia thriller it feels shockingly, terrifyingly contemporary, and it only makes sense that Jordan Peele pulled so much from it for Get Out.” Part of the Hollywood Theatre’s 2019 Feminist March film series. (Fri March 15, Hollywood Theatre)

Re-run Theater: Wonder Woman 1979
The two-parter “The Boy Who Knew Her Secret,” starring Lynda Carter, which originally aired in May 1979. Part of the Hollywood Theatre’s 2019 Feminist March film series. (Wed March 27, Hollywood Theatre)

Shrill
After much anticipation, Shrill—the Hulu comedy based on former Mercury contributor Lindy West’s hilarious bestseller of the same name—has arrived. And, surprising no one, it’s super funny. It’s also full of real-looking bodies and people of color. Actually, my first impression of the Portland-set Shrill was that it makes our city seem way more diverse than it actually is. But hey, it’s a comedy! Its setting is the world we want to live and laugh in, not the crappy one we have. Shrill is at its best—and its most real—when it addresses all the bullshit that fat people go through in their day-to-day lives, including the guilt and grief that often comes from their very own families. (Streams Fri March 15, Hulu) SUZETTE SMITH

Styx
This lean maritime thriller, directed by Wolfgang Fischer, balances a gorgeous idyll with a tense moral dilemma. A German emergency doctor (the superb Susanne Wolff) is brilliantly competent in all aspects of her work—and she brings that fearlessness with her on vacation, when she charts a solo course from Gibraltar to a remote island in the Atlantic. After a storm, her small sailboat encounters a distressed ship packed with refugees, and her precision and rectitude collides with desperate chaos against the unforgiving backdrop of an endless, blue-gray ocean. It’s suspenseful as all hell, but it’s intensely emotional, too. (Opens Fri March 15, Living Room Theaters) NED LANNAMANN

Subterranean Light: Films Beneath The Skin Of The American Dream
Much like name of this screening, Portland filmmaker Vu Pham’s short films are pretty intense. Pham writes stories that can feel like nightmares, but always remain relatable due to their grounding in his personal history, and fans of David Lynch will enjoy the ominous, shifting reality of his heists gone wrong and his wonderful use of noisy, textured scores. This particular screening collects shorts Pham co-directed with Joe X. Jiang (yes, of the Slants!), including a mood reel of their in-development feature, The Horizon is a Scar, My Love. (Fri March 22, Pacific Northwest College of Art) SUZETTE SMITH

They Shall Not Grow Old
For They Shall Not Grow Old, Peter Jackson and his team his team got their hands on archival footage from WWI, then used computers to colorize, clean up, and speed-correct the film to make it more realistic. With the addition of narration from veterans recorded by the BBC years later and some unobtrusive, newly recorded foley, the documentary gives us a fresh, immersive look at images from more than a century ago. It looks incredible. (Now playing, various theaters) NED LANNAMANN

Transit
The “gimmick” with Transit is pretty simple: It’s based on a World War II novel, but it’s set in the present day, without further explanation. German director Christian Petzold (Phoenix) could be saying something about borders, refugees, displacement, and resistance, but here the personal outweighs the political, and the result lands somewhere between Kafka and Hitchcock. Fleeing from occupied Paris to the port of Marseille, Georg (Franz Rogowski) assumes the identity of a dead author, and comes into the orbit of his widow and a young, fatherless boy. There’s paranoia and purgatory, but like the best of film noir, the twists and turns are elevated by an inescapable emotional undercurrent. (Fri March 22, Cinema 21) NED LANNAMANN

Triple Frontier
Excellent diretor J.C. Chandor (All Is Lost, Margin Call, A Most Violent Year) takes on a script by excellent screenwriter Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty) about five former soldiers who try to pull of a South American heist—oh, and the excellent cast includes Ben Affleck, Charlie Hunnam, Pedro Pascal, Oscar Isaac, and Garrett Hedlund, and jesus, that’s a lot of firepower for a movie that’s just kind of quietly popping up on Netflix. Triple Frontier has been in the works for years (at one point, Kathryn Bigelow was attached to direct, while Tom Hanks, Tom Hardy, Channing Tatum, and Johnny Depp were all rumored to star); while the film wasn’t screened for Portland critics, whatever the hell it ends up being will be something interesting. (Streams Wed March 13, Netflix) ERIK HENRIKSEN

Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral
“What is dead may never die.” —The Drowned God of the Iron Islands (Now playing, various theaters)

The Wedding Guest
A new Michael Winterbottom thriller starring Dev Patel as a mysterious British man making his way across Pakistan and India. (Opens Fri March 15, Fox Tower 10)

Wonder Park
A kid imagines an amusement park run by colorful talking animals. They ride the rides ‘n’ shit, I guess? This used to be the sort of story you’d tune out after five seconds of high-pitched yammering from your bedwetting crotchfruit. But in 2019 insanely rich morons routinely pay $100 mil to overwork a small army of hunchbacked animators in the hopes it’ll become the new Hotel Transylvania or something. (Opens Fri March 15, various theaters) bobby roberts

Yardie
The directorial debut of actor/writer/DJ/balladeer Idris Elba, Yardie is a crimey trip to 1970s Kingston, Jamaica, telling the story of a young man in a soundclash crew see king revenge on the gangsters who murdered his brother. Not screened for critics. (Opens Fri March 15, Living Room Theaters)
