Some big names for Eagles to pursue in free agency: Macnow      Cache   Translate Page

NFL free agency officially begins Wednesday afternoon. Here’s my advice to fans: Put on your Eagles green, flip on the NFL Network, order in a hoagie and get ready for the excitement.

Unlike baseball’s endless Game of Thrones winter, the NFL hot stove heats up fast. Prominent names will move in the first few days. Franchises will make dramatic changes.

General manager Howie Roseman has been sharp at this game. He’s had some free-agent whiffs, no doubt (Chance Warmack, Haloti Ngata, Mark Sanchez), but his successes include guard Brandon Brooks, safety Malcolm Jenkins, linebacker Nigel Bradham, wide receiver Alshon Jeffery, defensive end Chris Long and, of course, quarterback Nick Foles, who now departs.

The Birds already got off to a good start Monday, signing defensive tackle Malik  Jackson, who was released by Jacksonville. Jackson’s been a Pro Bowler and won a Super Bowl with Denver. He’ll look great lined up next to Fletcher Cox.

But Roseman’s team has other needs, not all of which can be addressed in the April draft. And, after recent moves, he has $20 million in cap space. Here’s where I think he should spend it:

Running back: After Jay Ajayi’s injury last season, the Eagles rotation was a mess. No one on the current roster seems capable of playing the lead in this production. Le’Veon Bell would be an amazing addition, but there’s little shot the Eagles commit what it costs to sign him.

That means looking at the next level. Tevin Coleman of the Falcons is a productive, versatile 25-year-old. He had 1,076 yards last season on runs and receptions. And he’s averaged 4.4 yards per carry over his career. He’d be a great fit here — as well as many other teams. He’ll draw lots of interest.

Keep an eye, too, on the Saints' 29-year-old Mark Ingram, who can run with the ball (4.8 yards per carry over the past four seasons), as well as catch and pass block — always important with the Eagles. And I love Cleveland’s Duke Johnson, who’s not a free agent but rumored to be available. He’s among the best pass-catching backs in the NFL.

Wide receiver: DeSean Jackson’s divorce from Tampa Bay seems inevitable and many rumors have him returning here. With one year and $10 million left on his contract, it’s not a bad idea. Even at 32, Jackson averaged 18.9 yards per catch in 2018 — the third time in five seasons he’s led the league in that category.

It seems the Eagles have been searching for a speed receiver since Jackson left in 2014. If not him, I’d like to see them target John Brown. Playing in the Ravens’ pitiful passing game last season, Brown still averaged 17.0 yards per catch. And he fights for the ball.

Defensive line: The reshuffling is already underway with the signing of Malik Jackson and the trade of DE Michael Bennett to New England. Also, expect the departure of Tim Jernigan (who I think they should keep on a short-term deal).

Two sexy names: Pass rusher Ezekiel Ansah of the Lions, who would be an upgrade from Bennett, and DT Ndamukong Suh, who had his typical up-and-down season while making $14 million for the Rams in 2018. One hook here: Suh spent his first for seasons in Detroit playing for current Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz.

Oh, and don’t be surprised if DE Vinny Curry returns from Tampa under a short-term deal as Bennett’s replacement.

This much is sure: The team that opens this September will be vastly different from the one whose season ended in New Orleans last January. And the remake starts this week.

We're a vegan millennial couple that spends around $415 a month on groceries —here's exactly what we buy      Cache   Translate Page

emily bloch

  • My boyfriend and I spend about $415 on groceries every month.
  • We are both vegan, and our grocery list usually includes fruit, vegetables, tofu, and vegan meat and cheese substitutes.
  • Here's a detailed list of exactly what we buy every month.

Mark and I are serious foodies, but we're trying to eat in more.

Tonight, he’s making Beyond Burgers topped with fried green tomatoes and cabbage sauteed in red wine vinegar. Last week, it was a faux fried chicken made from wheat gluten. I decided I loved him when he told me the sandwich we ordered came with mac and cheese on top of it, but wanted to know if we should get a side of it, too.

Together, we're a vegan millennial couple living in Jacksonville, Florida.

Even though we've been dating for a while, we just started officially living together under the same roof. We both went vegan for our love of animals — including our black lab Gypsy, who enjoys Mark's cooking scraps alongside normal kibble — and our distaste for factory farming.

We're both in the early stages of our careers with communications degrees, so we're not exactly rolling in a money pit. We also rent right now, but hope to buy a house within the next few years, so we try to shop frugally and eat in whenever possible.

Tip: Use the right credit card to earn extra rewards on your groceries:
The American Express Gold Card offers 4x points per dollar spent at US supermarkets on up to $25,000 per calendar year (and 1x point after that). Depending on what you spend on groceries, you can watch the rewards add up. Click here to learn more about the AmEx Gold.

On a monthly basis, the two of us spend about $415 on groceries. We do the bulk of our shopping at Publix, but aren't immune to the occasional Trader Joe's impulse buys, and we also shop at some local markets around town. If you've ever wondered what a vegan eats in a typical month, we're about to show you.

This is what our monthly grocery spending looks like.

SEE ALSO: My family of 4 spends $946 a month on groceries and eats at home for almost every meal — here's exactly what we buy

DON'T MISS: 4 things former Starbucks employees would never tell you while working there

Publix — every other week: $120 to $130

We shop at Publix, a regional grocer based in the Southeast, for most of our day-to-day foods.

Our basic produce and entree bases will come from there, along with most beverages, including our refrigerator staple: flavored seltzer water. I told you, we're millennials. (But if it helps, we usually get it buy-one-get-one.)

I'm a sucker for a daily yogurt and you will always find stacks of tofu in our fridge that we use in scrambles, tacos, and more. We also irregularly buy things like olive oil, margarine, juices, hot sauce, and whatever interesting snack foods catch our eyes — which are not included in this breakdown.

There are only two of us, so we're not buying in bulk, but we do look for deals when we can, and our average weekly savings comes out to around $20.

Mark never cared for Trader Joe's until I came along. But with one perfectly stationed on my drive home from work, I make sure to pop in and get us some seasonal goodies, sauces, and dressings to pair with whatever he's cooking.

They also have great deals on vegan meat substitutes compared to Publix. Items like Tofurky slices are usually a few dollars cheaper. Needless to say, he's coming around.

Best Shot Monday: Sweet Violet      Cache   Translate Page
Violet_A1136479

Happy Monday! I was going through some photos the other day and came back across this one of sweet Violet. Normally I concentrate on photographing the dogs at the shelter, but while we were home in Jacksonville for the holidays, we had some extra time and my girls were helping me so we photographed all the available cats. This sweet girl has already been adopted, but there are so many wonderful animals, cats and dogs, at your local shelter!

As much as I've tried to check in here more often, I just haven't been able to find much extra time lately!  My work schedule has kept me running more than usual these past couple months due to some events being cancelled in the Fall courtesy of Hurricane Michael and rescheduled for early 2019.  Between that and juggling the girls' schedules and such, I've been pooped!  And dare I admit, Olivia and I got sucked into The Bachelor this season.  I've never watched that show before, but I can certainly see the attraction!  It's kinda like watching a train wreck; it's hard to look away!!! If anything, it's given my girls good examples of how NOT to behave.

Here's to things slowing down a bit soon!  Have a wonderful week, and thanks for stopping in today!
NFL FREE AGENCY: The winners and losers of a busy start to the offseason      Cache   Translate Page

jon grudenMarcio Jose Sanchez/AP

  • The 2019 NFL offseason started with some big moves.
  • The Raiders brought in wide receiver Antonio Brown and appeared ready to add even more talent.
  • The Steelers have watched as two of the most talented players in the league left for greener pastures.

The 2019 NFL offseason is well under way, with teams now free to negotiate to bring new players in and superstars are maneuvering their ways across the league to what they hope will be greener pastures.

Teams and free agents were allowed to begin negotiations on Monday, and signings will go official on March 13, but in just a few hours that the market has been open, there's already been plenty of action that will reshape the NFL heading into 2019.

From teams reloading on defense to players getting huge raises, take a look below at the winners and losers of the opening hours of the 2019 NFL offseason.

Winner: Antonio Brown

Don Wright/AP

It took a while to get there, but Antonio Brown got exactly what he wanted.

After a messy breakup with the Pittsburgh Steelers that included tense arguments and some awkward posts to social media, Brown has left the team to join the Raiders in Oakland and earned himself a solid raise that will pay him $50.1 million over the next three seasons.

Loser: Pittsburgh Steelers

Gene J. Puskar/AP

The Steelers are set to lose two of the most talented offensive weapons in the NFL, with Antonio Brown joining the Raiders and Le'Veon Bell unlikely to return after holding out for the entirety of 2018.

While Pittsburgh still has plenty of firepower — Ju Ju Smith-Schuster and James Conner both had extremely productive years — it's tough to believe that losing two of the most feared players in the league is a positive.

Making matters worse is the paltry return the Steelers got for their departing superstars — nothing for Bell, and a mere third- and fifth-round pick from the Raiders for Brown. Hardly a king's ransom.

Winner: Nick Foles

AP Photo/David Banks

After a career spent as a nominal backup, Nick Foles getting a huge payday to take over the starting role in Jacksonville, reportedly set to sign a four-year, $88 million deal that includes more than $50 million guaranteed.

While the Jaguars had a rough 2018 campaign, they're only a season removed from an appearance in the AFC Championship, and have a solid defense and set of skill position players that could make some noise if Foles comes through as he did for the Eagles over the past two years.

Add the fact that the Eagles could have used the franchise tag to keep Foles and then trade him away to the destination of their choosing — Washington, Miami, or worse — it's obvious that Foles is one biggest winners of free agency thus far.

Cory's Corner: It Begins With Earl Thomas       Cache   Translate Page

Free agency is supposed to begin at 4:00 p.m. ET on March 13.

Monday was just the start of the legal tampering period when teams can begin negotiations. It is meant to whet the appetite of the NFL fans and keep a slow burn of craving for everything associated with the Shield.

Forget the appetizer. Monday turned into a free agent feeding frenzy as 31 players agreed to deals to play for other teams as of 9:00 p.m. CT.

But it’s not the number of contracts, it’s the amount of money being thrown around. Landon Collins was gifted a six-year, $84 million deal from the Redskins. Collins is a very good player, but is he really worth $45 million guaranteed? There’s a reason why Washington is perpetually in salary cap jail and it’s because of signings like this. It may not be as bad as the Deion Sanders or Albert Haynesworth signing, but it’s pretty bad.

Or how about Nick Foles? The moment the Eagles weren’t going to bring him back, it was understood that Jacksonville was going to sign him. Blake Bortles has proven that he’s a career backup and will not be living the rest of his career like a third overall pick. The Jags gave Foles a four-year, $88 million deal when it appeared like Jacksonville was negotiating against itself.

So what does this mean for the Packers? First of all, it means that general manager Brian Gutekunst better be ready to spend money if and when he dips his toes into the free agent pool. Earl Thomas, my top overall free agent, is looking for a two-year deal around $30 million. That’s completely doable for a Packers team that currently has over $35 million in salary cap space. That number could rise if Green Bay opts to cut the fat and releases Nick Perry.

There has been a lot of anxiety from Packers fans thinking that free agency will continue just as it had for the most part with Ted Thompson. I don’t think that’s going to happen. I think Gutekunst will do something in free agency. The only question is, what guys does he want to bring back? The two most important ones are Muhammed Wilkerson and Bashaud Breeland. Marcedes Lewis would make a lot of sense because he’s a tight end that can block, as opposed to Jimmy Graham.

If Gutekunst can sign Thomas, who was the No. 1 overall defender after Week 4 last season according to Pro Football Focus, for two years that would be a huge coup. It would lock down the back end of the defense, but it would also narrow the focus for the NFL Draft. Instead of possibly worrying about a safety late in the first round, Gutekunst only needs to think about an edge rusher and if Noah Fant or T.J. Hockenson somehow fall to 30, that would be ideal.

Signing Thomas would be akin to signing Charles Woodson. At first blush, that may seem like hyperbole because Woodson was an amazing talent that solidified his Hall of Fame resume as a member of the Packers. Thomas is a borderline Hall of Famer right now. Just imagine a linebacker’s mentality attacking the line of scrimmage on running plays and lulling quarterbacks to sleep on pass plays.

I don’t think Gutekunst will do much, but he will do something. Thomas is the start of that something.

Bradley Roby Will Sign One-Year, $10 Million Deal with Houston Texans, Per Report      Cache   Translate Page
After five seasons with the Denver Broncos, Bradley Roby is set to continue his NFL career with a new team.

NFL Network's James Palmer reported Tuesday that Roby, who played at Ohio State from 2010-13, has agreed to a one-year, $10 million contract with the Houston Texans.

While the NFL's free agency negotiation period began Monday, Roby's deal with the Texans cannot become official until Wednesday, when the new league year begins.

In five seasons with the Broncos, Roby appeared in 79 games with 29 starts, recording 236 total tackles, 60 pass deflections, seven interceptions, seven forced fumbles, three sacks and two defensive touchdowns. He started a career-high 15 games for the Broncos, serving as their No. 2 cornerback.

The Broncos opted to part ways with Roby in free agency this year, however, agreeing to a three-year, $33 million contract with Kareem Jackson – who played for the Texans last year – to replace him at cornerback.

Now, Roby is likely in line to be the Texans' No. 2 cornerback in 2019 opposite Johnathan Joseph.

Other teams that showed interest in Roby included the Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders, according to Palmer, but ultimately, he chose to join the Texans. Roby told Mike Klis of 9News in Denver that he turned down a three-year offer from the Steelers as well as a one-year offer from the 49ers, choosing to take a one-year deal from the Texans with the goal of earning a bigger contract next offseason.

Roby is the first former Ohio State player who has been reported to agree to a contract with a new NFL team since the free agency negotiation period began Monday. Carlos Hyde signed with the Chiefs over the weekend, but that came after he was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars; Johnathan Hankins re-signed with the Raiders on Sunday, while the Steelers announced Tuesday that Ryan Shazier will remain under contract for the 2019 season, even though he will be unable to play as he continues to recover from a spinal injury.

Ohio State Mock Draft Roundup: Nick Bosa Projected to 49ers, Dwayne Haskins Projected to Giants and Parris Campbell's Stock Rising After NFL Scouting Combine      Cache   Translate Page
With the NFL Scouting Combine in the rear-view mirror, there’s a clear consensus on where each of Ohio State’s top two prospects will end up in the 2019 NFL draft.

Take a look at NFL mock drafts around the web, and the same two landing spots are projected for the Buckeyes’ two likely top-10 picks far more often than not: Nick Bosa to the San Francisco 49ers, and Dwayne Haskins to the New York Giants.

Beyond them, the other Buckeye who now looks to be the most likely to join Bosa and Haskins in the first round is Parris Campbell, who is increasingly garnering first-round mock draft projections after a spectacular performance at the combine in which he tied for the fastest 40-yard dash among all wide receivers (4.31 seconds) and was also among the event’s top performers in the broad jump (11 feet, 3 inches), vertical jump (40 inches) and 20-yard shuttle (4.03 seconds), putting his elite athleticism on display.

Dre’Mont Jones also has a chance to be a first-round pick, though he’s mostly projected to be selected in the second half of the second round as of now.

With NFL free agency officially starting Wednesday, and many players already agreeing to deals with new teams, the moves that are made over the next couple weeks will have an impact on each team’s needs for the 2019 NFL draft, and could influence where players ultimately end up in April.

The combine, though, is the only time before the draft that all the top prospects will be together in one setting – and an opportunity for some of the media’s top NFL draft insiders to gather intel that shape their draft projections – which makes it a good time to check in on where each of Ohio State’s top prospects are projected to be selected as of now.

For this edition of the NFL Mock Draft Roundup, we took a look at the following 16 mock drafts, all of which have been published since the NFL Scouting Combine and whose projections are detailed below:

Nick Bosa, DE

Crabbs: Round 1, No. 1 overall, Arizona Cardinals
Ledbetter: Round 1, No. 1 overall, Arizona Cardinals
The Athletic: Round 1, No. 1 overall, Arizona Cardinals
McShay: Round 1, No. 2 overall, San Francisco 49ers
Miller: Round 1, No. 2 overall, San Francisco 49ers
Jeremiah: Round 1, No. 2 overall, San Francisco 49ers
Reuter: Round 1, No. 2 overall, San Francisco 49ers
Easterling: Round 1, No. 2 overall, San Francisco 49ers
Kadar: Round 1, No. 2 overall, San Francisco 49ers
Lombardo: Round 1, No. 2 overall, San Francisco 49ers
Brugler: Round 1, No. 2 overall, San Francisco 49ers
Marino: Round 1, No. 2 overall, San Francisco 49ers
Norris: Round 1, No. 2 overall, San Francisco 49ers
Trapasso: Round 1, No. 2 overall, San Francisco 49ers
Wilson: Round 1, No. 2 overall, San Francisco 49ers
Draft Tek: Round 1, No. 2 overall, San Francisco 49ers

While Bosa was once considered the frontrunner to be the Arizona Cardinals’ selection with the No. 1 overall pick, many NFL insiders now believe that the Cardinals plan to draft Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray with the top pick in the draft, as all but four of the 16 mock drafts we surveyed project.

Unlike our first NFL Mock Draft Roundup in February, when six out of 12 mock drafts projected Bosa to be the top pick, he’s only projected to be the top pick in three out of 16 mock drafts now, with Easterling projecting that the Cardinals will select Alabama defensive tackle Quinnen Williams with the top choice.

What every one of these draft prognosticators agrees on, though, is that Bosa will be a top-two draft selection. The 49ers could certainly use a difference-making defensive end like Bosa, so if the Cardinals choose to draft Murray or someone else instead, San Francisco will likely pounce on the opportunity to draft the former Buckeye, who most analysts consider to be the draft’s best overall player.

Dwayne Haskins, QB

Reuter: Round 1, No. 3 overall, New York Giants
Easterling: Round 1, No. 3 overall, New York Giants
Lombardo: Round 1, No. 3 overall, New York Giants
McShay: Round 1, No. 6 overall, New York Giants
Miller: Round 1, No. 6 overall, New York Giants
Jeremiah: Round 1, No. 6 overall, New York Giants
Kadar: Round 1, No. 6 overall, New York Giants
Brugler: Round 1, No. 6 overall, New York Giants
Ledbetter: Round 1, No. 6 overall, New York Giants
Wilson: Round 1, No. 6 overall, New York Giants
The Athletic: Round 1, No. 6 overall, New York Giants
Draft Tek: Round 1, No. 6 overall, New York Giants
Norris: Round 1, No. 7 overall, Jacksonville Jaguars
Trapasso: Round 1, No. 10 overall, Denver Broncos
Marino: Round 1, No. 11 overall, Cincinnati Bengals
Crabbs: Round 1, No. 15 overall, Washington Redskins

The New York Giants were already the consensus projected landing spot for Haskins in our February mock draft roundup, and that consensus has only gotten stronger since the combine. It’s time that the Giants should be looking to draft Eli Manning’s successor to be their next starting quarterback, and Haskins – a New Jersey native and the draft’s best pocket passer – is seemingly a perfect fit.

With Murray now widely projected to be the No. 1 overall pick, the Giants might need to trade up in order to secure their chance to draft Haskins – the only other quarterback widely projected to be a top pick – which is why Easterling, Lombardo and Reuter all have the Giants trading with the team they share a stadium with, the New York Jets, to move up to the No. 3 overall pick.

Because none of the teams currently picking in the top five are expected to draft Haskins, however, there’s still a good chance that the Giants will have the opportunity to select Haskins at the sixth pick unless another team trades up in front of them to select him.

Only four of the 16 mock drafts that we surveyed have the Giants passing up on Haskins, but if they do, the Jaguars, Broncos, Bengals and Redskins are all teams that could also be in the market for their quarterback of the future (though the Jaguars seem unlikely now after they reportedly agreed to a four-year, $88 million deal with Nick Foles on Monday).

Parris Campbell, WR

Jeremiah: Round 1, No. 22 overall, Baltimore Ravens
McShay: Round 1, No. 27 overall, Oakland Raiders
Brugler: Round 1, No. 30 overall, Green Bay Packers
Wilson: Round 2, No. 36 overall, San Francisco 49ers
Lombardo: Round 2, No. 38 overall, Jacksonville Jaguars
Draft Tek: Round 2, No. 40 overall, Buffalo Bills
Trapasso: Round 2, No. 46 overall, Washington Redskins
Easterling: Round 3, No. 70 overall, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

While Bosa and Haskins were already widely projected to be top-six picks before the combine, and simply solidified their standing as top prospects in Indianapolis, Campbell is the Buckeye who appears to be making a real move up draft boards after an excellent combine performance.

Campbell was not projected as a first-round pick in any of the 12 mock drafts we surveyed in February, but is now projected as a first-round pick by three of the industry’s most connected NFL draft insiders – Daniel Jeremiah, Todd McShay and Dane Brugler – and was projected to be selected no later than the middle of the second round in all but two of the mock drafts we surveyed that include two rounds or more.

There’s no consensus landing spot for Campbell – and McShay’s projected landing spot, the Raiders, is probably less likely now that they made a big move to trade for one of the NFL’s best wide receivers, Antonio Brown – but it now appears very much within the realm of possibility that Campbell could be a late first-round pick, and it will be a surprise if he isn’t selected in the first two rounds.

Dre’Mont Jones, DT

Norris: Round 1, No. 28 overall, Los Angeles Chargers
Easterling: Round 2, No. 50 overall, Minnesota Vikings
Lombardo: Round 2, No. 50 overall, Minnesota Vikings
Draft Tek: Round 2, No. 50 overall, Minnesota Vikings
Trapasso: Round 2, No. 56 overall, New England Patriots

It’s unusual to see a consensus landing spot for a player who is widely projected to be drafted in the middle of the second round, but the popular projection for Jones in mock drafts so far has been the Minnesota Vikings’ 50th overall pick, where he lands in three of the five mock drafts that included the Ohio State defensive tackle this time around.

Even though the Vikings already drafted one defensive tackle from Ohio State last year, when they selected Jalyn Holmes in the fourth round and moved him inside, they are likely to be in the market for another defensive tackle – particularly, one like Jones who is a disruptive interior penetrator – after reportedly losing Sheldon Richardson to the Cleveland Browns in free agency.

It’s still possible that Jones could sneak into the late first round of the draft, but with unspectacular testing results at the combine and a draft class of defensive linemen that’s loaded with top prospects, it appears more likely that he will end up somewhere in Round 2.

Michael Jordan, OL

Draft Tek: Round 3, No. 77 overall, Carolina Panthers

Terry McLaurin, WR

Draft Tek: Round 4, No. 108 overall, New York Giants
Easterling: Round 4, No. 115 overall, Carolina Panthers

Isaiah Prince, OT

Draft Tek: Round 4, No. 117 overall, Atlanta Falcons

Mike Weber, RB

Draft Tek: Round 4, No. 129 overall, Dallas Cowboys

There haven’t been many seven-round mock drafts published since the NFL Scouting Combine, so we don’t have a good range of projections to look at for the Buckeyes who aren’t projected to be selected in the first two rounds. Draft Tek’s most recent computer simulation, however, projects that eight Buckeyes will be selected in the 2019 NFL draft – all within the first four rounds.

Once you get past the second round, it’s exceedingly difficult to project where a player ultimately will ultimately land, but Jordan, McLaurin, Prince and Weber all appear as though they should at least be drafted within the middle rounds.

Two other Buckeyes who should have a shot to be drafted, though they weren’t included in Draft Tek’s seven-round projection, are cornerback Kendall Sheffield and wide receiver Johnnie Dixon. Sheffield has been projected to be selected as early as the third round in earlier mock drafts, but he missed out on his chance to solidify himself as a middle-round pick when he suffered a partial pectoral tear during the bench press at the combine, which prevented him from participating in an on-field workout and could prevent him from participating in Ohio State’s March 20 pro day, as well.

Houston Texans sign safety Tashaun Gipson      Cache   Translate Page

After losing two defensive backs to free agency, the Houston Texans made a move to offset those losses with the addition of a safety who played for a division rival last season.

Safety Tashaun Gipson played for the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2016-18, after four seasons in Cleveland, and has started 90 regular season games during a 98-game period.

Gipson is one of only five safeties in the NFL since 2012 to record at least 20 interceptions.

He started all 16 games in each of the three seasons with the Jags. The defensive back earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2014.

Gipson, a Dallas native, attended the University of Wyoming.

The Texans lost defensive backs Tyrann Mathieu (Chiefs) and Kareem Jackson (Broncos) and to free agency.

The team re-signed DE Angeleo Blackson, WR DeAndre Carter and DE Joel Heath.

The Texans extended qualifying offers to NT Brandon Dunn, K Ka'imi Fairbairn and LB Brennan Scarlett.

SPRINGFIELD – State lawmakers on Tuesday successfully passed a bill through the House raising the age to buy tobacco products to 21.

Although the governor has not definitively indicated whether he supports the measure – which would raise the minimum age to buy cigarettes, e-cigarettes, vapes, chewing tobacco and other products containing nicotine in Illinois – his spokeswoman said in a written statement that Pritzker “looks forward to reviewing the legislation to raise the smoking age.”

Senate President John Cullerton, D-Chicago, indicated at a news event in February that Pritzker would sign the “Tobacco 21” legislation if both chambers approved it first.

The bill’s passage comes as a victory for sponsor Camille Lilly, D-Chicago. This is the fourth time in as many years a version of this measure has been introduced in the General Assembly, where it historically would succeed in the Senate only to fail in the House.

During the previous legislative session, both chambers approved “Tobacco 21.” When former Gov. Bruce Rauner did not sign it, only the Senate was able to override his veto.

This year, Lilly said her colleagues and advocates wanted to try a new approach. By running the measure through her chamber first, where she has “more people to deal with,” they hoped to secure a favorable outcome.

The measure passed by a 82-31 vote, securing the support of several Republicans, including Minority Leader Jim Durkin, R-Western Springs.

During a debate Tuesday, Durkin said that although he has “been fighting it for most of [his] career,” he is changing his stance on raising the legal age to buy tobacco products in part because of research into the “epidemic” of smoking.

“I am here to say that I am no longer fighting it, but I am supporting Tobacco 21 for the state of Illinois,” Durkin said.

Opponents had two main arguments, ones that have been made in previous sessions and in committee hearings this session. The first is that if 18 is old enough to serve on a jury, enlist in the military or get married, it should be old enough to buy a cigarette.

State Rep. C.D. Davidsmeyer, R-Jacksonville, echoed this point.

“I believe that if a person is old enough to decide who the most powerful person on the planet, the president of the United States, is, I think they’re responsible enough to look at the package of cigarettes, look at a can of chewing tobacco, and see that it says, ‘This can kill you,’ ” he said.

The second argument finds fault with the removal of penalties in current law for minors caught with tobacco products. Presently, minors found with a product containing nicotine might have to take a smoker’s education or youth diversion program with their parents. Each additional violation brings increased fees and hours of community service.

The bill leaves in penalties for merchants who sell to minors. Bill Fleischli, executive vice president of the Illinois Petroleum Marketers Association and the state’s Association of Convenience Stores, finds fault with this logic.

Fleischli said merchants then become the policers because law enforcement would be unable to do anything if an officer saw a minor with a cigarette, for example.

State Rep. Tim Butler, R-Springfield, who is a chief co-sponsor of the measure, said he knows “this isn’t a perfect bill.”

“For those who wonder about the decriminalization aspect of it, I’d like you to ask a member of our law enforcement how many kids they actually bust for smoking a cigarette every day,” he said. “It doesn’t actually happen today.”

State Rep. Tony McCombie, R-Savanna, said another pressing issue for her is how Illinois is going to make up for the lack of tax revenue lost from selling tobacco products to 18-, 19- and 20-year-olds.

“It’s important that we stay focused and make sure the lives of our young people are healthy,” Lilly said during the debate, although she did not return requests for comment after the vote.

The soonest the Senate could vote on this legislation, House Bill 345, is March 19.

Cullerton is a longtime supporter of “Tobacco 21,” joking at a news event in February that he was tempted to take sponsorship of the measure from longtime issue leader state Sen. Julie Morrison, D-Deerfield.

In a statement Tuesday, Cullerton said, “That’s an encouraging, bipartisan vote that puts us one step closer to finally enacting this important public health protection.”

Kathy Drea, the American Lung Association’s senior director for advocacy, said she is looking forward to the vote in the Senate. She and her colleagues have a meeting Wednesday with Pritzker.

Supporters of the legislation include the American Heart Association and American Cancer Society, as well as JUUL Labs, the makers of popular vaping devices.

In a statement, JUUL CEO Kevin Burns said, “We applaud the Illinois House of Representatives for passing legislation to raise the purchasing age for all tobacco products, including vapor products, to 21, and we will continue to work with lawmakers in Illinois to get this policy signed into law.”

Florida Is Using Facial Recognition to Convict People Without Giving Them a Chance to Challenge the Tech      Cache   Translate Page
The Constitution requires the government to give defendants the chance to test technology used against them for bugs and biases.

If the government uses an error-prone face recognition system to identify you as the perpetrator of a crime, you have a constitutional right to probe its accuracy before you are convicted based on its results. But amazingly, a Florida appeals court disagrees.

So on Monday, the ACLU, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the Georgetown Center on Privacy and Technology, and the Innocence Project filed a friend-of-the-court brief urging the Florida Supreme Court to address this important issue.

What’s at stake is not just the outcome of this case, but the very meaning of due process in the face of rapidly evolving police technology.

In 2015, two undercover cops purchased $50 of crack cocaine from a Black man on a Jacksonville street. Instead of arresting him on the spot, one officer used an old phone to snap several photos of him. Trying to be discrete, the officer took the photos while holding the phone to his ear and pretending to be on a call. Needless to say, the resulting photos were not headshot quality.

Later, after failing to identify the man themselves, the officers emailed the photos to a crime analyst, who used a statewide face recognition system to see if one of the photos looked like any mugshots in the county’s database. The program spit out several possible matches, the first of which was Willie Lynch, who was soon arrested and charged with the drug sale.

Face surveillance tools are dangerous whether they are accurate or not. But that danger is magnified because many such algorithms produce biased and inaccurate results. These problems are well-documented in commonly used face recognition algorithms. Not only are the systems known to be less accurate when two photographs contain different lighting, shadows, backgrounds, poses, or expressions, but the systems have been shown to perform less accurately on photos of Black people, women, and younger people. This is partly because the data sets used to train the algorithms have historically been composed of face images that are not representative of the full diversity of the population.

Last year, the ACLU of Northern California highlighted how this bias plays out in Amazon’s face recognition system, called Rekognition, which the company is aggressively marketing to law enforcement. The program falsely matched photographs of 28 members of Congress with mugshot photos. While people of color made up approximately 20 percent of members of Congress generally, they constituted nearly 40 percent of the false matches returned by the algorithm.

All of these factors converge in Lynch’s case. Lynch is a Black man, and the quality of the cop’s photos wasn’t fit for Instagram, much less taking a man’s liberty.

Moreover, in Lynch’s case, the algorithm expressed only one star of confidence that it had generated the correct match. (The system rates the likelihood of a match by assigning stars to the resulting photos). When Lynch’s defense attorney questioned the analyst who used the system before trial, she explained that she did not understand how the face recognition algorithm worked. Yet, even with that understanding, a mere one-star confidence rating was enough for the analyst to send Lynch’s photo — along with his prior criminal history — on to the officers, asserting that he was the likely perpetrator. The officers accepted her suggestive recommendation without further investigation.

At trial, the entire basis of the state’s case against Lynch was the officers’ testimony that they recognized him as the man who sold them drugs. Lynch’s defense was that they had the wrong guy, and so he needed to be able to test the reliability of the officers’ claim.

Because the officers only identified him based on the results of the face recognition program, looking into how the face recognition algorithm functioned and whether errors or irregularities in the procedure tainted the officers’ ID was critical to his case. But when Lynch asked for the other booking photos the program returned as possible matches, both the government and the court refused. Their refusal violated the Constitution, which requires prosecutors to disclose information favorable to a defendant.

And that requirement makes sense. Imagine you were a juror in Lynch’s trial, and instead of face recognition technology, the government relied on a witness who saw the drug sale occur. If the witness testified that she was “one-star confident” that Lynch was the drug seller, wouldn’t you want to know if she had thought any other individuals, besides Lynch, were equally likely to be the guy? And wouldn’t you want to know what exactly she meant by “one-star confident”?

The U.S. Supreme Court decided long ago that due process requires prosecutors to give jurors and defendants full access to this sort of information to ensure that defendants can make their case and so that judges and jurors can make fully informed decisions on grave questions of guilt and innocence. Getting an algorithm involved doesn’t change these fundamental principles.

And these concerns aren’t limited to this case. In Florida alone, more than 240 law enforcement agencies use the face recognition algorithm at issue in this case, with more than 5,000 users conducting up to 8,000 searches per month. You might expect that this would have generated a flood of cases where defense attorneys challenged the accuracy of the system. But as far as we can tell, Lynch’s case is the first of its kind.

Prosecutorial misconduct and police adoption of face recognition technology are dangerous, and the ACLU has been pushing to halt both. Until that happens, prosecutors must give defendants full access to information about the algorithm used against them in places where face recognition technology has already been deployed. This includes the underlying model, training data, computer code, explanatory documentation, and any other results from which the final, reported result was chosen. Any validation studies should also be available as well as the opportunity to question the people who use and created the system.

Only then can defendants identified by face recognition truly get a fair trial — a right that prosecutors are obligated to facilitate. We hope that the Florida Supreme Court recognizes how important this is for the criminal justice system.

Browns im "Win Now"-Modus

http://jumpingjackflashhypothesis.blogspot.com/2012/02/jumping-jack-flash-hypothesis-its-gas.html

The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

Illinois House advances bill to raise tobacco age to 21      Cache   Translate Page
SPRINGFIELD – State lawmakers on Tuesday successfully passed a bill through the House raising the age to buy tobacco products to 21.

The legislation moves to the Senate for a vote expected next week. From there, it likely will receive enough support to land on Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s desk.

The captain departed Southport City Dock at 7:00 AM and mid-morning the first mate awoke to take him coffee and a snack on the fly bridge.  I was happy to sleep late today.  It was a tad overcast but before long the sun came out and it was a beautiful day with exceptionally beautiful cloud formations.

We got held up an hour at the Wrightsville Bridge which opens only on the hour.  Ralph called on the radio and asked if the bridgetender would hold the opening for him and was told "If you can be here in one minute, I'll hold" -- that was do-able, but immediately after the transmission, the bridgetender started closing the bridge so we floated around for an hour.  By that time several other boats had accumulated, including our friends, Gary and Christelle on Time and Tide. We ended up going through most of the bridges together, which reminded us of locking through all those Canadian locks.  They were able to scoot through a bridge or two, though, since they do not have the same height restriction we do.

Striper is not doing very well today.  She didn't eat her dog food at all, and only a few nibbles of food we were eating.  I gave her another dose of the antibiotic this morning and within a couple hours she looked catatonic and the pads of her paws were cold, as was her body.  We called the vet in Southport who said that she also had the topical dose of Parastar for ticks/fleas yesterday and it may not have settled well with her.  So until she perks up, we are to discontinue the medicine.  We aren't used to seeing her like this.  She's drinking a lot of water which is good and she is asleep now.

We are anchored in Jacksonville, NC -- actually beside Camp Lejeune Marine Base.  Aerial maneuvers are going on overhead so it's quite noisy.  Also going on overhead with the lack of ambient light -- there are a plethora of stars out tonight.  The sky is beautiful.

We traveled 64 miles today.  Our goal is to be in Annapolis, MD by the 15th -- which is a bit ambitious so we are hoping for no more weather delays.  Here are a few of today's photos:

Video #1: The Civil Rights Era Roots of Roller Skating [Atlanta, Georgia]

Great Big Story, Published on May 9, 2018

In cities like Atlanta, roller skating culture is alive and rocking. But, its roots go back decades, back to the Civil Rights era. During desegregation in the 1950s and 1960s, many roller rink owners sought to maintain racial divides by hosting theme nights, such as “Rhythm Night” and “Soul Night,” specifically targeted towards African American patrons. Soon, however, these nights evolved into a thing of their own, stripping away the organ music and leaving behind an entirely unique subculture.

In Atlanta, the skating hub was centered around Cascade, a rink attracting all the best skaters in the area. Today, Cascade continues the movement, keeping skating culture rolling on.
