Should the Boeing MAX-8 Be Grounded? The FAA Changes Its Story      Cache   Translate Page

Is it safe to board a Boeing 737 MAX-8?

Nobody seems able to come up with a straight answer, particularly in America.

Every day across the rest of the world, airlines and nations are grounding their MAX-8s; the European Union’s civil-aviation authority suspended all MAX models following the same orders from Australia, the U.K., and Singapore.

The Global Economy Is A Time Bomb Waiting To Explode      Cache   Translate Page

Authored by Marshall Auerback via TruthDig.com,

In the aftermath of the greatest financial calamity since the Great Depression, then–chief of staff for the Obama administration Rahm Emanuel made the call for aggressive action to prevent a recurrence of the meltdown of 2008.

Although the U.S. government’s system of checks and balances typically produces incremental reform, Emanuel suggested that during times of financial upheaval, the traditional levers of powers are often scrambled, thereby creating unique conditions whereby legislators could be pushed in the direction of more radical reform. That’s why he suggested that we should never let a crisis go to waste. Ironically, that might be the only pearl of wisdom we ever got from the soon-to-be ex-mayor of Chicago, one of those figures who otherwise embodied the worst Wall Street-centric instincts of the Democratic Party. But give Rahm props for this one useful insight.

But we did let the crisis of 2008 go to waste. Rather than reconstructing a new foundation out of the wreckage, we simply restored the status quo ante, and left the world’s elite financial engineers with a relatively free hand to create a wide range of new destructive financial instruments.

To cite some examples, consider the case of the UK, where England’s local councils have taken on significant risk via structural financial products known as “LOBO loans” (lender option borrower option). Financial blogger Rob Carver explains how they work:

“[Let’s] say I offer to lend you £40 and charge you 3% interest for 5 years. Some other guy comes along and offers you the same deal; but the twist is he will have the option to ask for his money back whenever he likes.

“You wouldn’t borrow money from him because it’s clearly a worse deal. …

“Suppose he sticks to his guns but as a concession he will lend you the money at only 2.9% interest. Would you take that? What about 2.5%? 2%?”

What Carver is describing here is the so-called “teaser”: a seductively low starting interest rate that is sufficiently attractive to induce the buyer to take on the LOBO in the first place. It’s designed to entice someone away from fixed interest rate borrowing (which at least has the virtue of being constant and therefore more readily predictable). The seductive quality of the teaser is that one’s borrowing costs might appear “cheaper” than the higher initial fixed-rate costs offered by the Public Works Loan Board (PWLB), a wing of the government. But the troubles become more apparent with the passage of time.

What happens if and when rates unexpectedly move up? In general, as Carver notes, having to suddenly repay your loan when interest rates have risen to 4 percent is the worst possible time for you. It’s akin to taking away the umbrella the minute it starts to pour. Worse, the authority is likely locked into a contract that typically has a lifespan of 40-70 years. (And who can forecast with any degree of certainty the trend of interest rates over that sort of time span? It makes the whole notion of buying an instrument on that premise to be speculative in the extreme.) Banks have the option of raising rates at their discretion, and although the councils are able to opt out of their contract, they will pay huge penalties if they seek to renegotiate or exercise that option to opt out.

So there’s a huge negotiating imbalance built into the contract, and the likely upshot is that the local council ends up paying more in interest charges over the course of the loan. How much more? According to an activist group, #NoLOBOs (created to help housing authorities combat the impact of these instruments), “a substantial number of housing councils are facing 7-9 % interest rates, which is more than twice the current rate of lending at the PWLB.” And in many instances, the municipalities have been burdened with these higher borrowing costs at a time when additional funding from the national government has been cut back, so they are confronted with a double whammy on both sides of the balance sheet.

What was initially sold as a means to manage risk, then, ultimately metamorphoses into a recipe for financial fragility, especially when it occurs at the municipal level with institutions that don’t have the capacity to create new currency (as a federal authority can do). The “teaser” becomes a poison pill. This means a local authority (or level of government that is a user, rather than issuer, of currency) can go bust.

To give some sense of the magnitude of the market, the Independent notes:

“There is around £18bn worth of private sector loans on councils’ books, according to figures from the Department for Communities and Local Government. … [A]round £15bn of these are Lobos.

“Annual sales to local authorities regularly topped £1bn in the run-up to the financial crisis and peaked at £1.5bn in 2007, before crashing to £600m a year later and then dwindling to nothing in 2012.”

Their revival since 2012 has resulted in hundreds of millions of pounds being skimmed from struggling town hall budgets, which were hit by the double whammy of these toxic instruments, along with austerity-imposed cutbacks from the national government. One particularly egregious example was the cash-strapped town of Newham, which had £398m of exposure to LOBOs back in 2014. Faced as well with cutbacks from the national Tory government, the local council was forced to remove financial support from a homeless hostel, “leading to the eviction of a group of single mothers to save £41,000,” reported British publication Private Eye.

Needless to say, banks and brokers have profited handsomely from the whole exercise, pocketing hundreds of millions of pounds in profits.

Here’s another disaster waiting to happen: Globally, financial markets today are seeing a rebirth of “collateralized loan obligations” (CLOs), instruments broadly similar to the “collateralized debt obligations” (CDOs), which helped to blow up the financial system in 2008. CDOs were asset-backed instruments, a “blended” security comprised of risky mortgage-backed bonds and much of the rest from theoretically safer tranches. The theory underlying them was that the lower the investment quality, the higher the compensating yield, but in reality most turned out to be toxic junk. What distinguishes CLOs from their CDO “cousin” is that instead of repackaging mortgages, subprime and otherwise, CLOs repackage corporate loans, and consumer credit, such as car loans.

Unfortunately, in yet another instance of lessons unlearned from 2008, the collateralized loan obligations, like the CDOs, have virtually non-existent investor protection, “with over 70 percent lacking any covenants that would allow monitoring of financial condition and early intervention to manage problem borrowers. This exacerbates the risk of higher losses,” argues Satyajit Das, a former banker who first identified the risks to financial stability posed by these kinds of instruments back in 2008. In fact, Das elaborates, “relative to mortgages, [CLOs] typically are made up of fewer and larger loans, which increases concentration risk. Leveraged loans are highly sensitive to economic conditions and defaults may be correlated, with many loans experiencing problems simultaneously.” Which intuitively makes total sense: during a slowdown, virtually all economic activity slows down, whether that be housing, car sales, or consumer borrowing. Diversification of risk is therefore more apparent than real.

In an environment of prevailing low interest rates (and, hence, lower yields from conventional instruments), debt investors have been told (again) that they can enhance their portfolio returns, through these higher-yielding CLOs, while mitigating risk simply by diversifying. In theory, the risk is dispersed, but in practice, as Das has pointed out, if you’re simply diversifying different kinds of financial excrement, the end result is more likely to be insolvency for the whole instrument. A common theme is that in spite of the disastrous performance of these instruments during the market crash, many of the underlying loans today still lack standard provisions to protect lenders, such as reporting and requirements to maintain certain income and asset levels. Consequently, more toxic junk is being passed around the system like a hot potato. Last one holding the potato loses.

Given the scale of issuance, all major financial institutions are likely to be left holding these bags. CLOs, notes Das, have been growing at a rate of around $100bn a year for the past decade, and total levels outstanding now approach the size that existed in the CDO market by the time of the 2008 crisis. As the cycle has matured, the quality of the assets of the loans has diminished, and the borrowers have become increasingly leveraged.

This follows a classic pattern of a typical borrowing cycle, as credit structures move from relatively stable “hedge financing” (where the underlying units can meet payment commitments out of income flow) to “Ponzi” finance (borrowing simply to pay interest on the interest), a process originally outlined by the economist Hyman Minsky. Based on the relatively benign conditions of the recent past, both borrowers and lenders are lulled into a false sense of security and increase their respective risk profiles accordingly. Minsky was by no means the only economist whose work has become associated with manias, panic and crash. He built his analysis on the shoulders of analysts of the Great Depression, such as Irving Fisher, John Maynard Keynes, and John Kenneth Galbraith. But what distinguishes Minsky’s scholarship is that he focused it on the “upward” source of the financial instability, as opposed to its disastrous denouement. In relation to today’s CLO market, the parallel is that the decade-long period of stability in the aftermath of 2008 (in reality, faux stability achieved through the injection of trillions of dollars in public sector bailouts) has again given the users a stream of data providing the illusion that leverage is safe.

Rather than respond to each financial meltdown by seeking to curb the activities that led to the crisis in the first place, the sheer ongoing dominance of our financial sector has ensured that policy has merely worked to bail out the big players, and do everything to keep the rigged casino of the economy in their favor. Thus, financial institutions continue to concoct increasingly esoteric and opaque financial instruments that they market to less financially sophisticated counterparties.

Let’s roll back the tape to a few financial crises ago, from the early 1990s. At that time, Bob Citron, the Orange County treasurer, bankrupted his county via leveraged investments he made in structured notes (i.e., customized notes designed to fit the investment wishes and opinions of particular institutional buyers). If you tailor an exotic instrument to fit your investment outlook, you’d better know what you’re doing and appreciate the downside risks. Customization entails a level of financial expertise that Citron later conceded he did not fully possess. He was a sitting duck in a sea of sharks (to mix metaphors). Citron made a bet on the direction of interest rates (he bet they would stay low, which was wrong). As a result of his miscalculation, by 1994 Orange County’s investment portfolio began hemorrhaging hundreds of millions of dollars, ultimately going broke. Without conceding any liability, ultimately Merrill Lynch paid out $400m in penalties to settle the case.

That was an early warning signal, which unfortunately remained unheeded, as it was followed in quick succession by the Asian financial crisis in 1997, the bankruptcy of Long-Term Capital Management and the concomitant Russian debt default in 1998, the dot.com bust, and finally the complete seizure of the global financial system by 2008. Each time, a common foolhardy notion was the idea that higher levels of reward could be achieved without any corresponding increase in risk. All of this occurred against a backdrop of deregulation, minimal transparency and inadequate market supervision.

If you thought the near-breakdown of the global economy in 2008 was enough to make global policymakers and regulators rethink their persistent accommodation of financial innovation and deregulation, think again. Regulators have continued to accommodate this complexity, rather than minimizing it. Complex financial systems beget yet more complex (and ultimately ineffective) regulation. It is better to simplify the system in order to improve the quality of the regulation and the ease of oversight (which the complexity is designed to avoid).

Unfortunately, that’s not what our policymakers have done. Instead of redesigning the system, the monetary authorities have simply inserted themselves in the chain of intermediation that included an ever-evolving variety of books of business without actually considering whether there were too many weak links in the credit chain in the first place. Rather than shorten or redesign the economy’s credit structures, and curb the risks accordingly, central banks instead have simply acted as the ultimate guarantors in a supply chain from money-like instruments to longer-term and riskier credit. Absent any kind of sanction for undertaking more systemically dangerous activities, our policymakers have therefore made the same mistakes that were made in the early 2000s: they are establishing perverse ongoing incentives that increase risk, punishing the timid (prudent?) with low returns. It’s a classic illustration of Gresham’s Law, whereby bad money drives out good.

So here we go again. No less a figure than Claudio Borio, the chief economist of the Bank for International Settlements central, who warned of the dangers of a synchronized housing bubble well before the 2008 crisis, is again sounding the alarm about a recurrence. The crash gave us a chance to downsize finance and restrict its ability to wreak comparable havoc on the economy going forward. Instead, we let the crisis go to waste, which almost certainly means a nasty sequel to 2008 facing us in the near future.

The Dallas Mavericks seem to have all bases covered particularly in their backcourt. However, that doesn't mean Mark Cuban is not keeping tabs with the NBA free agent market this coming summer, loaded with big names.  While most are abuzz on Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard, and Kyrie Irving, Kemba Walker is another unheralded name in the mix. And if reports are true, the Mavs may try to lure the 28-year-old guard out of Charlotte. Seeing that Walker has repeatedly made it known he would prefer to stay a Hornet, anything could change moving forward.

<i>In an essay published on his website discussing the sentencing of David Irving for the Holocaust denial, Shamir wrote that "the Jews" now "rule over the minds and souls of Europeans": David Irving was sentenced for denial of Jewish superiority. His doom seals the reign of (albeit limited) freedom that began with the fall of Bastille. European history went full circle: from rejecting the rule of Church and embracing free thought, to the new Jewish mind-control on a world scale. Not only is Western Christian civilisation dead, but even its successor, secular European civilisation, has met its demise only a few days after its proud and last celebration by the Danish scribes. It was short-lived: about two hundred years from beginning to the end, the Europeans may once have had the illusion that they can live without an ideological supremacy. Now this illusion is over; and the Jews came in the stead of the old and tired See of St Peter to rule over the minds and souls of Europeans</i> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israel_Shamir

Kyrie Irving apologizes for mistakes he's made handling things this season      Cache   Translate Page

Yahoo Sports Chris Haynes was able to get Kyrie Irving to open up about his rather tumultuous recent encounters with the media.

“The way I’ve handled things, it hasn’t been perfect. I’ve made a lot of mistakes that I take full responsibility for. I apologize. I haven’t done it perfectly. I haven’t said the right things all the time. I don’t want to sit on a place like I’m on a pedestal from anybody. I’m a normal human being that makes mistakes. For me, I think because of how fixated I was on trying to prove other people wrong, I got into a lot of habits that were bad, like reading stuff and reacting emotionally. That’s just not who I am.”

“I’m still learning, bro. I come from a suburb of New Jersey. I’m not used to all this [attention].”

The All-Star guard was roundly criticized last week when a clip circulated of him walking into an arena in which he was met by cameramen and he was heard saying, “I’m not going to miss this [expletive] when I’m retired.”

His critics, which included retired players, quickly pointed out that he didn’t have a problem using cameramen and social media to help promote his “Uncle Drew” movie.

Irving smiled and nodded his head, conceding he’s heard the remarks.

“My [Uncle Drew] character, I never took any acting classes. I didn’t put any extra work into it. It was just something I was able to do and it became this,” he told Yahoo Sports. “Look, I respect the ones that came before me, but they didn’t endure social media, the 24/7 news cycle. [NBA commissioner] Adam Silver was right; it really affects people in different ways. These are just different times. People are dealing with anxiety, depression and other disorders that affects their well-being. Some people can’t handle all of this, and we need to be mindful of that.

There's a lot more quotes from Kyrie if you click the link above as well as a length video of Haynes discussing the conversation he had with Irving. It's good to see Kyrie taking a much more positive approach on this west coast trip nd do some self reflecting as well.

I Rompicapi di Alice: Tutta questione di memoria      Cache   Translate Page

Carl Gauss

Martin Gardner, 1965, 'Mathematical Games', Scientific American, vol. 212, no. 4, pp. 128-135 doi:10.1038/scientificamerican0465-128

Paul Anka is the latest artist to beef with Drake      Cache   Translate Page

Pusha T, Meek Mill, Kendrick Lamar, Chris Brown, Common, Tyga, Jay-Z, Kanye West and... Paul Anka?

Of all the artists ever to beef with Drake, the 77-year-old crooner and Order of Canada appointee might be the most serious yet. He's certainly the oldest, if that counts for anything.

Anka, an Ottawa-born singer and songwriter famous for such 20th Century hits as "Put Your Head on My Shoulder" and "Lonely Boy," had some choice words for the 6ix God this week in response to news that Drake had allegedly removed their joint track "Don't Matter To Me" from his touring set-list.

The song in question featured previously-unreleased vocals from the late Michael Jackson, as recorded by Anka back in 1983.

It reached moderate commercial success upon its release as part of Drake's fifth studio album, Scorpion, in July of 2018, and had been part of the Toronto-born superstar's setlist during his most recent North American tour.

Eyebrows were raised, however, when Drake didn't perform the song during the first stop on his current U.K. tour in Manchester Monday night—despite the fact that artists do change up the songs they play rather often during tours.

British news outlets were quick to point out that the omission came shortly after the release of HBO's explosive documentary, Leaving Neverland, which focused on the allegations of two men who said Jackson had sexually assaulted them as young boys.

Similar to the backlash seen against R. Kelly following the release of Lifetime's mini-series Surviving R. Kelly, advocates have been calling upon radio stations to "mute" Michael Jackson in recent days with varying degrees of success.

Drake hasn't publicly weighed in on the issue, nor did he say anything about why the song featuring Jackson's vocals were admitted Monday.

Anka is angry either way.

"As far as Drake goes, in my eyes, I had an experience with Drake. Though it was somewhat fulfilling creatively, he was not honourable in keeping his promise with me or Irving Azoff in terms of what our business relationship was," said the accomplished artist to ET Canada in response to a question about Drake's scrapping of their song from his tour repertoire.

"So I have nothing really to say about Drake other than [that] he should respect his elders, and he didn’t keep his promises with me," he continued.

"So that's another news headline that you can have. He knows what I'm talking about, so do his people around him."

Brrrap!

HERSHEY FELDER, BEETHOVEN Breaks Box Office Record At San Diego Repertory Theatre      Cache   Translate Page

San Diego Repertory Theatre (San Diego REP) announced today that its all time box office record has been broken by its current production of Hershey Felder, Beethoven. The award-winning piano virtuoso had previously shattered box office records at San Diego REP with his 2017 production of Our Great Tchaikovsky. Felder has consistently broken records throughout his career and now Hershey Felder, Beethoven is the highest overall grossing show in San Diego REP history.

"We are fortunate to have such a great partnership with Hershey Felder, and to have this fantastic show," says Managing Director Larry Alldredge. "We are very excited that Hershey Felder, Beethoven has broken our all time box office record with two weeks of shows remaining."

Described by American Theatre Magazine as "a seductive portraitist, compelling storyteller, and superb concert pianist," Hershey Felder returns to San Diego REP with his latest smash hit celebrating the world's greatest composer, Beethoven. The new production is based on the original Aus dem Schwarzspanierhaus by Dr. Gerhard von Breuning, with text by Felder that brings to life some of Beethoven's greatest compositions. Felder has illuminated Beethoven and his 5th and 9th symphonies, "Moonlight Sonata," "Pathetique Sonata," "Emperor Concerto," "Fur Elise" and more, in a deep and revealing light. Hailed in both its premieres in Silicon Valley and Los Angeles as "Rapturous and exhilarating" by the Palo Alto Weekly and "A towering performance about a towering composer" by The Mercury News, Hershey Felder, Beethoven promises to be his most unforgettable journey yet.

Tickets are still available for the production, which runs now through March 24, 2019, at the Lyceum Stage Theatre in Horton Plaza. Tickets range from $25.00 to $119.00 and can be purchased in-person at the San Diego REP Box Office, by calling the box office at 619-544-1000 or online at sdrep.org. Active military, teacher and senior discounts are available.

San Diego Repertory Theatre (San Diego REP) produces intimate, exotic, provocative theatre. Founded in 1976, San Diego Repertory Theatre is downtown San Diego's resident theatre, promoting a more inclusive community through work that nourishes progressive political and social values and celebrates the multiple voices of our region.           Fighting Talk: Brexit and civil disorder      Cache   Translate Page

“We should cut the heads off the politicians,” said the waiter in Corfu to us, as EU-imposed austerity crushed Greece in 2010. Before the week was out there were riots in Athens, buildings were set on fire and three bank employees burned to death.

Thankfully, we’re nowhere near that stage, but if you lift the lid off social media you’ll see the pot is bubbling ferociously. Britain is split in two, each half calling the other all sorts of names. Most of these ranters qualify for jury service and the franchise; one trembles at the thought of “direct democracy.” One in four of the population is said to suffer from a mental disorder and to judge by Facebook it’s plausible.

But in a way, hardly surprising. Far from seeking to reunite the country, professional politicians in the UK have been fomenting discontent among Remainers and have even advised EU leaders on how to subvert the Referendum result.[i]Is it a coincidence that the Daily Mail has been given a new editor who has U-turned the paper’s line and now characterises Brexiteers as “saboteurs” leading us to an “abyss”?[ii]

Even the Eurocrats are infected. Mr Van Rompuy, who looks as if he couldn’t decapitate a boiled egg, fantasises about holding a knife to our throat[iii]; Mr Tusk, even less loved in his native Poland than here[iv], smirks at a vision of “those who promoted Brexit” in Hell[v]. Their intemperate language is a clue to the fact that there is not one but two crises brewing.

The first is the European Union’s. Jean Monnet’s dream of a Europe that could never make war with itself again, has been caught in the trap of confusing aim with method. Full political unification has been pursued clandestinely and with an almost suicidal obsession, like Captain Ahab after his White Whale. As a prelude, the single currency was forced into being despite the unreadiness of participants like Greece and Italy, both of which fudged their economic data to qualify and have suffered for it since.

The EU’s appetite for centralised control and aggrandisement remains unslaked (would C P Snow have dubbed them “the labradors of power”?) Straight after the centenary of the Armistice, Frau Merkel returned to her theme of a European intervention force.[vi]Now she is after an aircraft carrier[vii]- just when it is rumoured that China plans to sell off her own to Pakistan.[viii]How does one justify the expense of such capital ships, with their increasing vulnerability?[ix]

And the interference in the Ukraine that has heightened tensions between the Western alliance and Russia – see the military build-up in the region on both sides[x][xi]- hasn’t put the EU off its plan to foster supranational order elsewhere, too: “Africa is the future,” said Mr Juncker in his 2018 “State of the Union” address, urging more collective arrangements there of the kind that were the foundation stones of the EU.[xii]

In the midst of this, Brexit and the common man threaten to spoil the grand project of the philosopher-kings. Again and again, on shows like Question Time, ordinary people are bluntly challenging their elected representatives to do what was solemnly promised in 2016.

This brings us to the second, local crisis. By affirming (not only orally but in the official pamphlet[xiii]) that the Referendum would be held once only and that the result would be implemented whatever the outcome, our leaders effectively turned it into a binding plebiscite; and now they wish to resile.

That has raised and dashed expectations in the most emphatic way, and the implications are dangerous. If this vote is delegitimised, then so are all the ones passed in Parliament, many of them by a smaller margin than four per cent[xiv].

What would the consequences be? Former Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab said on last week’s Question Time that there will be a “day of reckoning” if Brexit is nullified[xv], and he may be thinking of deselections, Party membership cancellations and the shattering of the two-party system itself. But some think, or worse, wish, that it could go further – even Dr Richard North has said, perhaps only half-jokingly, “It is not only ideas that develop in the provinces – so do revolutions.”[xvi]

Fortunately, revolutions and civil wars don’t just happen, and a good thing too, as whatever the outcome the process is horrific; and often long-drawn-out, because unlike a war there’s nobody to make peace on behalf of the whole country. They need an evil constellation of factors, but that discussion is for another occasion.

Having said that, one of the possible triggers is major financial dislocation. Not just the vindictive awkwardness in trading arrangements that the EU appears to be preparing for us, cutting off its nose to spite its face, but the kind of long-cycle economic downturn that Irving Fisher[xvii], Nicolai Kondratiev[xviii]and others have theorised.

The role of debt has been overlooked by many economists and Professor Steve Keen has estimated that only some 20 out of 10,000 professionals foresaw the 2008/2009 Global Financial Crisis. For those who think the crisis is over because of Quantitative Easing and Modern Monetary Theory, it’s worth noting that global debt is now bigger than ever – some three times the size of the world’s GDP.[xix]Despite high levels of money-printing we are not yet seeing significant inflation, but that is because economic demand is dropping and debt servicing is a growing challenge; the turnover of cash is slowing and offsetting the effects of monetary inflation.[xx]Also, the US dollar, the world’s reserve currency, is being snapped up by foreign countries scared of local currency depreciation/default, so at present those dollars are not cascading back into the USA and boosting the price of everything, says analyst Martin Armstrong.[xxi]

Harder times are coming: goodbye cheap energy, a booming consumer economy and abundant public services; hello to cheating WASPI women of their promised State pensions, trimming the social benefits of the gilets jaunes and so on. Ordinary wage-earners now need additional financial support to make ends meet; real hourly wages have pretty much stalled over the last 40 years since the multinationals saw massive opportunities for capital in global workforce arbitrage. Sir James Goldsmith warned[xxii]about the socio-economic consequences at the time of GATT in 1994, and now it has all come to pass.

It will go on until it can’t, but who knows when or how that will happen?

When the times come that “try men’s souls”, the search is on for an ideological map to find our way out. Power relations come under scrutiny. In the eighteenth century, the American colonists adopted the Enlightenment analysis that rooted power in the consent of the people, so that when General Gage defended his lumping American rebel officers with their men by saying that he recognised only ranks derived from the King, George Washington replied that for his part he could not conceive any rank “more honorable that that which flows from the uncorrupted choice of a brave and free people - the purest source and original fountain of all power." Five months later came the publication of Tom Paine’s “Common Sense”, arguing on the same lines and setting the movement alight.

Ian Geering QC’s piece this week on the Bruges Group site (10 March) follows this tradition.[xxiii]It is a normative political philosophy – this is how we feel things ought to be, rather than how they have been for most of recorded history. Did the Americans complain of taxation without Parliamentary representation? Leeds, Birmingham and Manchester shared their plight, while Old Sarum had seven voters and two MPs.[xxiv]Up to the twentieth century, only a fraction of the adult British population could vote at all, and had to resort to other means to register their dissatisfaction: as Tony Benn observed at the time of the Maastricht capitulation, “Riot has historically played a much larger part in British politics than we are ever allowed to know […] Unless we can offer people a peaceful route to the resolution of injustices through the ballot box, they will not listen to a House that has blocked off that route.”[xxv]

And that, as of last night (12 March 2019), is where we are: watching a cloth-eared Parliament rejecting an "open prison" Withdrawal Agreement yet fighting against a clean break, either way negating what the people decided upon.

Yes, the people are divided – by their very nature, votes are divisive; the key to peace is to accept them as decisive. But those with access to power and the media have worked hard to jemmy the cracks wider. The process of re-radicalisation has started, and this time the State seems either unconscious of the peril, or (like George III) sure of its ability to patronise and repress.

Britain nearly had a conflagration in 1789. The philosopher Richard Price, a friend of Paine, gave a French Revolution-inspired speech: "A Discourse on the Love of Our Country", looking at the fundamentals of politics and, like Paine, rooting power in the people. The reception was enthusiastic (a term with distinct connotations of danger, in those days.)

The State was alive to the danger, and acted. Certain gentlemen came to advise Price on his future conduct. Burke began to compose a justification for the British Constitution in rebuttal. 1789 marked the last time a woman was burned at the stake (in London, for coining.) Radical groups such as the London Corresponding Society were infiltrated by government agents and ultimately suppressed; yet even with the brakes on, the vehicle of power was pushed inch by inch, over the next century, towards electoral reform and democratisation.

Answering the radicals who took revolutionary France as their model, Edmund Burke articulated a pragmatic scheme for the Parliamentary government we now have, a balance between the royal Executive and popular representation, and between constituency representation and mere delegation. This circumvented the bloody conflict of first principles that played itself out on the other side of the Channel.

But Burke was addressing the problem of how we govern ourselves, not whether we should be able to govern ourselves at all; even pragmatism has its limits. And on this latter issue, the people - firmly assured by their representatives that this vote would be decisive - made their determination. The task of their representatives was then to carry it through, while closing the divisions among the people as they went forward. They have failed on both counts. The issue has now turned from UK versus EU, to people - a confused, disunited, squabbling people - versus Parliament itself.

All our democratic progress is in danger of being thrown away.

For if the solution to the threat of revolution in Britain as France burned was to fashion its own sustainable form of democracy, then to discard democracy is to wind the clock back to pre-revolutionary days. And then the clock will start forward again, towards fresh crisis – and solutions that have already failed.

American Literature: A Discussion      Cache   Translate Page
American indites has come a presbyopic way. It dates back as far as the pre-colonization- completion America which is contrary to the catamenia belief of almost everyone that English has always been the language in America. Although it was famous that some fifty years after the governmental establishment of the united States, the concept of an American literature barely hold uped (Delbanco), American literature did exist and is still existing. Literature as a communication involving some layer of emotional or aesthetic response is both an independent qualify and one of the tools of anthropology. The latter is a description and explanation of social demeanor in every possible environment-from the primitive to the sophisticated-in every part of the world. (Dennis and Aycock 41) In this regard, looking at how literature emerged and how it evolved, identifies the kind of society and the kind of slew living in a certain era. II. Evolution & Era The breakthrough and/or developm ent of a certain type of literature did not just happen in a flash. American Literature, the different types of it, sprout in a seasoned manner. This means that there would not be political writings, or none of them would be popular, if there were no political issues looming around the corner. It is quite amusing to know that American writing (in English) started not as a seriously intended literary piece further as a work chiefly for the benefit of readers in the aim country. (American Literature). These were the English travelers and explorers who became Americans during those olden times, circa 1583 to 1763. Following is the timeline of the American Literature (Trent)1. English Travelers and Explorers, 1583-1763 retaining their own language as they travelled to America and became Americans turn chiefly influencing the literature with this language the heritage of the English race 2. This guy is flat out delusional first off the players they are targeting do not spend their off-season is in New York they spend it in California. He says what a great environment it is there can he not see how toxic the environment is and the players they are targeting do not want to go somewhere and deal with this drama. Leonard, Irving, Durrant as well as Butler do not want to deal with this crap they are not getting any of those guys there hope of getting a big-time player is winning the lottery and getting Williamson if they don’t win the lottery they will have to settle on second tier free agent.

Today, Irving's fifth sneaker surfaces in a familiar "Oreo" iteration - also seen on the LeBron 16, Air VaporMax and other models. The sneaker's engineered mesh is covered in light grey and is matched in the same tone on the laces, tongue and sockliner. The cookie-inspired theme continues with contrasting touches of black applied to the Swoosh logo, Flytrap-inspired lacing system, heel and outsole. Lastly, white speckles are added to its midsole for the colorway's final touch. The Nike Kyrie 5 "Oreo" arrives on March 22 for $130 USD at select Nike Basketball stockists and Nike.com. Nike Basketball followers can also take a look at the Zoom LeBron 3 "SVSM Home."

NBA Rumors: Kyrie Irving ‘Could Conceivably Sign’ With L.A. Lakers In Free Agency, Per ‘Bleacher Report’      Cache   Translate Page

Kyrie Irving #11 of the Boston Celtics takes a shot against LeBron James #23 of the Los Angeles Lakers at TD Garden on February 07, 2019 in Boston, Massachusetts.

A year ago, no one thought Kyrie Irving would ever consider playing again with LeBron James on the same team. When he demanded a trade from the Cleveland Cavaliers, Irving reportedly wanted to move out of the shadow of James and lead his own team. However, a potential reunion between Irving and James suddenly became a possibility when the All-Star point guard reached out to the Lakers superstar and apologized for the wrong things he had done during their time in Cleveland.

When the 2018-19 NBA season is over, Kyrie Irving is expected to opt out of the final year of his contract to become an unrestricted free agent. Before the start of the season, Irving expressed his desire to re-sign with the Celtics, but he recently had a change of heart and said that he wants to keep his options open next summer. According to Greg Swartz of Bleacher Report, Irving “could conceivably sign” with the Lakers in the 2019 NBA free agency.

Vad skriver jag med?      Cache   Translate Page
Ernest Hemingway till Irving Penn: “Your photos are really good. What camera do you use?”
Irving Penn svar till Ernest Hemingway: “Your novels are excellent. What typewriter do you use?”

The Democrats' baffling socialist swoon      Cache   Translate Page

Labels are incredibly important in politics. They tell us whether President Trump is a passionate American patriot or a racist, xenophobe, and wannabe authoritarian. They tell us whether Hillary Clinton in 2016 was an inspiring role-model for women and champion for working people everywhere or an inauthentic, entitled grifter who exemplified all that's wrong with America's corrupt establishment.

Labels matter so much that politicians and parties typically fight hard to control which ones get affixed to them, with the broadly popular ones proudly affirmed and the toxic ones furiously denied.

I can't help but wonder, then, why Democratic activists today appear happy to take on the label of "socialist." Republicans have long thrown the epithet in the face of liberals in the hopes that it might stick. While it's true that some polls have shown Democrats warming to the term, broader polling results of the country as a whole show that, even today, 58 percent have a negative view of socialism, with only 38 percent taking a positive view.

What gives? Why are Democrats eagerly embracing a label that a solid majority of voters dislike?

The answer, I think, is that the left wing of the party is antsy, eager to affirm something, anything to the left of the centrist-liberal consensus of the past few decades. These Democrats are fed up with the consequences of deferring to markets in every domain of our public life (and even in many aspects of our private lives) and long for something different — a more radical critique than what can be found in white papers published by the Center for American Progress and other center-left establishments think tanks. And "socialism" is standing in for this something.

It would be one thing if the term were accurate and precise. Then perhaps it would make sense for Democrats to attempt the hard work of trying to persuade the electorate to change its negative views of the socialist idea. But it doesn't make sense because the term is neither accurate nor precise. It's a foggy, unfocused concept that tells voters very little about what its exponents believe in or want to achieve. That makes its political deployment doubly misguided.

My favorite definition of socialism, because it so well captures the dreamy, circular, and largely contentless character of the way it is usually invoked, comes from Irving Howe, the New York intellectual, founder of Dissent magazine, and a life-long figure on the social-democratic left. Howe famously defined socialism as "the name of our desire," with the "our" referring to highly literate, non-Stalinist leftists like himself. Socialism is what people like Howe desired. But what was that exactly? Something better than capitalism and communism. Something between them, presumably. Yet this desire apparently had no concrete object in the world. It remained a mere idea.

The definition fits what many on the left seem to be advocating now. It's certainly not capitalism as it currently manifests itself in the United States. And don't even think of suggesting that it resembles the hyperinflationary, blacked-out mess in Venezuela. But neither is it anything close to what we got from neoliberal shills like Bill Clinton and Barack Obama.

But then what is it that socialists want? To judge by the policy positions many of them favor, it's something vaguely resembling … Canada. Or Denmark. Or maybe France.

There's just one problem: The political and economic arrangements that prevail in Canada, Denmark, and France aren't different in kind from those one finds in the United States. All of these countries permit private property. All of them have capitalist economies. All of them have robust welfare states combined with largely free markets. All of them have democratic elections and representative institutions.

What makes Canada, Denmark, and France appealing? The willingness of a solid majority of their citizens to vote for parties and politicians that favor government spending on social services, environmental regulations, infrastructure projects, and other programs that seek to advance the common good.

It's true that the political cultures of these countries are more inclined to support what contemporary Americans often sneeringly call "big government." But it wasn't always that way in this country. Indeed, during the administration of Franklin D. Roosevelt, public opinion strongly favored the gargantuan public programs of the New Deal and cheered on the president's vision of the country securing "Four Freedoms" for every American — freedom of speech, freedom to worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear.

But of course none of that was socialist. Indeed, FDR proposed his agenda explicitly to head off the spread of socialism in the United States — by which he and his fellow Democrats meant the socialism of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. What FDR advocated was very different than that: a modified, regulated, "mixed" version of democratic capitalism. In other words: modern liberalism.

Which is exactly what Democrats today aim for. None of the candidates currently running for president, not even self-described "democratic socialist" Bernie Sanders, want to overthrow the American political and economic system and replace them with an alternative. On the contrary, they want to use America's institutions to address our country's many long-neglected problems. Doing so will require a greater role for government than Americans are used to after four decades of hearing center-right and center-left variations on the Reaganite mantra that government is the source of — not the solution to — our difficulties. That would be a big change. But it wouldn't involve a transformation of the United States into a socialist country (whatever that is).

The left wing of the Democratic Party wants big change. And there's no denying that "We want socialism!" sounds sexier than "We want to be more like Canada!" But there's still a lot to be said for truth in advertising — especially when the name of your desire polls badly.

Democrats need to run as what they are. They are liberals, progressives. They are not socialists. And it's a good thing, too.

Films: Unsane
Format: DVD from Sycamore Public Library on The New Portable.

One of the realities of the horror genre is that if you look hard enough, you’ll find something that will really play on the fears of just about anyone. Being locked in an institution wrongfully is, I would guess, a pretty significant fear of a lot of people. Being locked in an institution with your stalker would be hundreds of times worse. And that’s exactly where we are going with Unsane. Don’t worry—this isn’t a spoiler. All of what sounds like it should be revealed over the course of the film is in the trailer.

Sawyer Valentini (Claire Foy) has moved from Boston to escape a stalker named David Strine (Joshua Leonard), who attached onto her when she took care of his father during his hospice care. The experience has left her scarred enough that she sees David in places where she is sure he can’t be. Deciding that she could use a little help, she books an appointment for herself at a place called Highland Creek Behavioral Center. She fills out a number of forms and is then taken to an examination room where it is revealed that she has just voluntarily committed herself for 24 hours.

After a rough night, Sawyer meets Nate Hoffman (Jay Pharoah), another inmate who is detoxing from opioid addiction. Nate tells Sawyer that Highland Creek and all of the other assorted centers run by the same parent company are a scam. People are tricked into committing themselves and reasons are found to keep them on the premises until their insurance stops paying, at which point they are declared cured and released.

All of this is scary enough, but after a day, Sawyer realizes that one of the interns at the facility is David Strine, who has shown up in a position of authority over her. Of course, he’s working under an assumed name, and since Sawyer is one of the inmates, no one believes her, with the possible exception of Nate, who has somehow smuggled a phone through security. Sawyer uses the phone to call her mother (Amy Irving), who promises to get her out.

What makes the film work is the possibility that we are dealing with an unreliable narrator. How much of Sawyer’s experience is real and how much of it is a result of an actual psychosis isn’t clear for a considerable length through the film. A lot of what happens is just plausible enough to have happened were she completely sane, yet sit right on the edge of the possibility of her being truly insane. She fights frequently with another inmate named Violet (Juno Temple), and the encounters look like Violet’s fault and as if she has instigated them. But is that the case? It’s what it would look like if seen through the eyes of someone who was not quite balanced herself.

Unsane, for those who knew about it when it was released, was notable specifically because of its gimmick. Steven Soderbergh, a guy who’s won an Oscar for directing, made this film using iPhones. He’s not the first to do it, but he’s certainly the highest-profile to make a feature-length film on a phone camera. For all that, the film looks pretty good. If I didn’t know it was made on iPhones, I probably wouldn’t have realized it. Sadly, that gimmick is likely to continue to get most of the press on this film, and that’s kind of a shame.

There’s a lot to like here. Claire Foy is not likable here, and that works to the film’s advantage. It’s a good performance specifically because she is harsh and not pleasant. You don’t know whether or not to root for her (although based on the situation, I was predisposed to do so—more on that in a second). Is she believable? Kind of…? Jay Pharoah and Juno Temple are great in support here and Joshua Leonard’s work takes a very hard turn in the third act.

So let’s talk about what doesn’t work—and that’s the idea that David is suddenly working at the facility where Sawyer finds herself. In fact, this is something that makes it very difficult to see this as anything other than Sawyer being completely insane. Since she has left Boston and moved a few hundred miles away to somewhere in Pennsylvania, booked an appointment with a random therapist, and is suddenly being held their involuntarily, how the hell does he know to show up there, fake an identity, and start in on a job he is woefully underqualified to have?

For what it’s worth, I have been stalked to a minor extent. I had a student years ago who became uncomfortably interested in me to the point of tracking me down in an online game I played at the time and telling me that she failed my class intentionally so she could take it again. This was a very mild stalking, and it was scary as hell. I found out (uncomfortably) where she worked one day when I went to lunch, and I couldn’t go back there for a year. In that respect, Unsane hits the right notes. It doesn’t always hit them as cleanly as it would like, though.

Why to watch Unsane: It’s scary in the right ways.
Why not to watch: The plot requires a massive coincidence or a massive leap to work.
