Jim Merritt (#97)      Cache   Translate Page
Jim Merritt pitched for 11 seasons – 4 with the Twins, 4 with the Reds, and (I didn’t know this until today) 3 with the Rangers. I always think of him as a Twin because that’s where he was when I started collecting cards, but he had his greatest success with the Reds.

Merritt was signed by the Dodgers (the 2nd thing I learned about him today!) in 1961. He went 19-8 for the Dodgers’ class-D team in Erie, PA, but apparently that wasn’t enough to protect him from the minor-league draft. He was selected by the Twins after the ’61 season.

Jim spent the next 3 seasons in the Twins’ farm system, making his major-league debut in August 1965. He made 2 relief appearances in the ’65 World Series vs. the Dodgers.

Merritt was a key member of the Twins’ starting rotation from 1966-68, and was one of 6 pitchers named Jim on their staff in ’66 and ’67.

In November 1968, he was traded to the Reds for shortstop Chico Cardenas. Jim won a career-high (at the time) 17 games in 1969, and topped it the following season with 20 wins. He also made his only All-Star team in 1970, and finished 4th in the NL Cy Young voting. That year he also pitched 2 games in the post-season.

As seems to be the custom with Reds’ pitchers in those days (Gary Nolan, Wayne Simpson, Wayne Granger, Jim Maloney, Sammy Ellis, etc, etc.) Merritt came down with arm troubles (in his case, an elbow injury), and compiled a horrendous 1-11 record in 1971. He was moved to the bullpen after an 0-8 start, and won his lone game in August.

Jim followed that up with a 1-0 record in only 4 games in 1972, while spending most of that season with AAA Indianapolis.

After the 1972 season he was traded to the Rangers for backup catcher Hal King. Merritt pitched 2 full seasons with Texas (5-13 in 35 games in ’73, 0-0 in 26 games in ’74) and was released in July 1975 after only 5 appearances.

It is almost exactly 1000 miles from Indianapolis, Indiana due South to Fort Walton Beach, Florida. When I was in Frankfort every other European country was within 8 hours of driving. Nic was cutting it too close with rest. His puppies could probably have made a top 10 finish, but he was in no condition. A 6 hour rest is only 4 hours of possible sleep as the first and last hours are needed for dog care. Also at one point the GPS was showing a 16mph speed on the sea ice which makes me suspect the team left without him. If you run 6 and rest 6, a healthy sled dog can go forever. You just have to have 20K calories to feed each of them every day. They are the perfect endurance athletes. He probably left off the Aleutian Islands and the southeastern group that includes the capital, Juneau.

Another story from London written by Val Furbish for the Harrison Harold fan club newsletter.  This one was published in the November 1970 issue.

Before I get started on George, I must speak on behalf of Ringo and his new LP 'Beaucoups of Blues."  Many people have told me the other Beatles should never have let Ringo sing because it led him to believe he could sing.  Well, I love Ringo's voice and I love both his albums.  Just because he doesn't sing YOUR kind of music, rock or progressive or what have you, it doesn't mean he can't' sing.  If you people who say he can't sing knew anything at all about music you'd be quite surprised to learn what a beautiful voice he does indeed have.  He has a very natural voice and it's easy for him to sing when a song is in his range.  I bet those of you who laugh at his singing can't even carry a tune yourself!  Alright so you can't appreciate his style of c & w and oldies, but don't knock him down cos you think you're cool!  Ringo does realize that not many Beatle fans can dig his music and so he is always very pleased when many Beatle fans can dig his music and so he is always very pleased when someone like me or Marcia tells him we bought his album and love it tremendously.  His smile tells you he's pleased and appreciates the fact that you bothered to tell him.  I suggest you people listen for yourself rather than reading the cheap reviews in Rolling Stone and letting them decide you hate it!

October has been a very good month for the George fan in London.  If he wasn't at EMI or Trident, he was at Apple.  For the first 2-3 weeks of the month, he was in and out of both EMI and Trident almost every day.  Towards the completion of his remixing of his solo LP, he began coming to Apple every day.  And all the times at Apple in such great moods.  He'd come out and talk for a half hour or so.  About the new Bob Dylan LP he's on, he said, more or less, that he was not on one record, I think it was "Wigwam" which everyone thought he was on and that he was on a few songs that we didn't know or think he was on, and he even sang in the background, but it doesn't sound like him.   When asking if his LP was finished yet he said almost and patted a package under his arm which contained all the 45's to put the LP together.  George also said the LP was a three-record set, not two.  Pat and I are positively dying to hear it, aren't we Pat?  One of his new songs is about the "Apple Scruffs" who George seems to like.  The Apple Scruffs are six Beatle fans over here and that's about all I really know about them.  I've heard rumors about them and seen them, but I really know very little about them.  I do know they publish a magazine which George likes and John's been trying to get a copy of.  Every time John arrives he looks at all of us and says, "So where's the Apple Scruff Magazine you've been promising me?"

George was really super on October 9.  There I was with Sarah (from Indianapolis), Sher (from Brooklyn) and Anne (from Birkenhead) all with our trusty cameras.  John arrived at about 2:30.  Both he and Yoko were beaming smiles from ear to ear.  It was a gorgeous sight.  A little while later John sent Mal out with a plate of cake for us.  I got the "J" off of John's birthday cake!  Well, there we were stuffing our faces when Ringo drives in.  Talk about getting cake all over your camera!  It took me a week to get it off.  Ringo was his usual sweet self.  About 3:30 boxes of stuff and a beautiful bunch of flowers (we guessed for John) I got a lovely photo of George just as he cracked a smile.

It was really super, all three of them in there together celebrating John's ancient age of 30.  I couldn't help think what Paul was, and is, missing.  Makes you want to cry to think about it. I hope he comes back sometime.

The three Beatles don't htink too much of Paul anymore.  One girl gave John and LP to which he replied, "I hope it isn't McCartney!"

I'm going to end this by saying I hope Maureen has a girl this time.

Colts will reportedly pay Devin Funchess up to $13 million in 2019      Cache   Translate Page
The Indianapolis Colts, with the highest amount of salary-cap space heading into free agency, just splurged big time on wide receiver Devin Funchess. According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, the Colts plan to sign Funchess to a one-year contract worth up to $13 million. That’s right, folks. A This is a one-year deal that would initially pay Funchess $10 million, but it could be worth up to $13 million with incentives. Even at $10 million, that is quite the generous chunk of dough to pay a guy coming off a 2018 season during which he finished with only 549 yards and four touchdowns. Funchess spent four seasons with the Carolina Panthers after they made him a second-round pick back in 2015. He put up a career-best 840 yards and eight touchdowns in 2017. Now, the Colts are going to potentially pay Funchess $13 million for one season, which is what No. 1 wideout T.Y. Hilton earns per year. This is a rather high price to pay for a receiver with limited career production.
Devin Funchess reportedly will sign a one-year deal with Colts      Cache   Translate Page
Devin Funchess is heading to Indy. NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero tweets that the free agent wideout will sign a one-year deal with the Colts. The deal is worth $13 million, according to veteran NFL reports Chris Mortensen (via Twitter). The 24-year-old has yet to fully put it together through his first four years in the NFL. With Kelvin Benjamin out of the picture, Funchess seemed to be taking a step forward in 2017, as he finished the campaign with 63 receptions for 840 yards and eight touchdowns. However, the wideout took a step back in 2018, compiling only 44 receptions for 549 yards and four scores in 14 games (12 starts). His downtick in production could be partly attributed to quarterback Cam Newton‘s injury. Funchess’ production also took a dip after he returned from a back injury. He should certainly have a chance to revitalize his career playing alongside Andrew Luck in Indianapolis. With T.Y. Hilton requiring attention from the opponent’s top cornerback, Funchess should have a chance to build off his 201

Ohio State Mock Draft Roundup: Nick Bosa Projected to 49ers, Dwayne Haskins Projected to Giants and Parris Campbell's Stock Rising After NFL Scouting Combine      Cache   Translate Page
With the NFL Scouting Combine in the rear-view mirror, there’s a clear consensus on where each of Ohio State’s top two prospects will end up in the 2019 NFL draft.

Take a look at NFL mock drafts around the web, and the same two landing spots are projected for the Buckeyes’ two likely top-10 picks far more often than not: Nick Bosa to the San Francisco 49ers, and Dwayne Haskins to the New York Giants.

Beyond them, the other Buckeye who now looks to be the most likely to join Bosa and Haskins in the first round is Parris Campbell, who is increasingly garnering first-round mock draft projections after a spectacular performance at the combine in which he tied for the fastest 40-yard dash among all wide receivers (4.31 seconds) and was also among the event’s top performers in the broad jump (11 feet, 3 inches), vertical jump (40 inches) and 20-yard shuttle (4.03 seconds), putting his elite athleticism on display.

Dre’Mont Jones also has a chance to be a first-round pick, though he’s mostly projected to be selected in the second half of the second round as of now.

With NFL free agency officially starting Wednesday, and many players already agreeing to deals with new teams, the moves that are made over the next couple weeks will have an impact on each team’s needs for the 2019 NFL draft, and could influence where players ultimately end up in April.

The combine, though, is the only time before the draft that all the top prospects will be together in one setting – and an opportunity for some of the media’s top NFL draft insiders to gather intel that shape their draft projections – which makes it a good time to check in on where each of Ohio State’s top prospects are projected to be selected as of now.

For this edition of the NFL Mock Draft Roundup, we took a look at the following 16 mock drafts, all of which have been published since the NFL Scouting Combine and whose projections are detailed below:

Nick Bosa, DE

Crabbs: Round 1, No. 1 overall, Arizona Cardinals
Ledbetter: Round 1, No. 1 overall, Arizona Cardinals
The Athletic: Round 1, No. 1 overall, Arizona Cardinals
McShay: Round 1, No. 2 overall, San Francisco 49ers
Miller: Round 1, No. 2 overall, San Francisco 49ers
Jeremiah: Round 1, No. 2 overall, San Francisco 49ers
Reuter: Round 1, No. 2 overall, San Francisco 49ers
Easterling: Round 1, No. 2 overall, San Francisco 49ers
Kadar: Round 1, No. 2 overall, San Francisco 49ers
Lombardo: Round 1, No. 2 overall, San Francisco 49ers
Brugler: Round 1, No. 2 overall, San Francisco 49ers
Marino: Round 1, No. 2 overall, San Francisco 49ers
Norris: Round 1, No. 2 overall, San Francisco 49ers
Trapasso: Round 1, No. 2 overall, San Francisco 49ers
Wilson: Round 1, No. 2 overall, San Francisco 49ers
Draft Tek: Round 1, No. 2 overall, San Francisco 49ers

While Bosa was once considered the frontrunner to be the Arizona Cardinals’ selection with the No. 1 overall pick, many NFL insiders now believe that the Cardinals plan to draft Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray with the top pick in the draft, as all but four of the 16 mock drafts we surveyed project.

Unlike our first NFL Mock Draft Roundup in February, when six out of 12 mock drafts projected Bosa to be the top pick, he’s only projected to be the top pick in three out of 16 mock drafts now, with Easterling projecting that the Cardinals will select Alabama defensive tackle Quinnen Williams with the top choice.

What every one of these draft prognosticators agrees on, though, is that Bosa will be a top-two draft selection. The 49ers could certainly use a difference-making defensive end like Bosa, so if the Cardinals choose to draft Murray or someone else instead, San Francisco will likely pounce on the opportunity to draft the former Buckeye, who most analysts consider to be the draft’s best overall player.

Dwayne Haskins, QB

Reuter: Round 1, No. 3 overall, New York Giants
Easterling: Round 1, No. 3 overall, New York Giants
Lombardo: Round 1, No. 3 overall, New York Giants
McShay: Round 1, No. 6 overall, New York Giants
Miller: Round 1, No. 6 overall, New York Giants
Jeremiah: Round 1, No. 6 overall, New York Giants
Kadar: Round 1, No. 6 overall, New York Giants
Brugler: Round 1, No. 6 overall, New York Giants
Ledbetter: Round 1, No. 6 overall, New York Giants
Wilson: Round 1, No. 6 overall, New York Giants
The Athletic: Round 1, No. 6 overall, New York Giants
Draft Tek: Round 1, No. 6 overall, New York Giants
Norris: Round 1, No. 7 overall, Jacksonville Jaguars
Trapasso: Round 1, No. 10 overall, Denver Broncos
Marino: Round 1, No. 11 overall, Cincinnati Bengals
Crabbs: Round 1, No. 15 overall, Washington Redskins

The New York Giants were already the consensus projected landing spot for Haskins in our February mock draft roundup, and that consensus has only gotten stronger since the combine. It’s time that the Giants should be looking to draft Eli Manning’s successor to be their next starting quarterback, and Haskins – a New Jersey native and the draft’s best pocket passer – is seemingly a perfect fit.

With Murray now widely projected to be the No. 1 overall pick, the Giants might need to trade up in order to secure their chance to draft Haskins – the only other quarterback widely projected to be a top pick – which is why Easterling, Lombardo and Reuter all have the Giants trading with the team they share a stadium with, the New York Jets, to move up to the No. 3 overall pick.

Because none of the teams currently picking in the top five are expected to draft Haskins, however, there’s still a good chance that the Giants will have the opportunity to select Haskins at the sixth pick unless another team trades up in front of them to select him.

Only four of the 16 mock drafts that we surveyed have the Giants passing up on Haskins, but if they do, the Jaguars, Broncos, Bengals and Redskins are all teams that could also be in the market for their quarterback of the future (though the Jaguars seem unlikely now after they reportedly agreed to a four-year, $88 million deal with Nick Foles on Monday).

Parris Campbell, WR

Jeremiah: Round 1, No. 22 overall, Baltimore Ravens
McShay: Round 1, No. 27 overall, Oakland Raiders
Brugler: Round 1, No. 30 overall, Green Bay Packers
Wilson: Round 2, No. 36 overall, San Francisco 49ers
Lombardo: Round 2, No. 38 overall, Jacksonville Jaguars
Draft Tek: Round 2, No. 40 overall, Buffalo Bills
Trapasso: Round 2, No. 46 overall, Washington Redskins
Easterling: Round 3, No. 70 overall, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

While Bosa and Haskins were already widely projected to be top-six picks before the combine, and simply solidified their standing as top prospects in Indianapolis, Campbell is the Buckeye who appears to be making a real move up draft boards after an excellent combine performance.

Campbell was not projected as a first-round pick in any of the 12 mock drafts we surveyed in February, but is now projected as a first-round pick by three of the industry’s most connected NFL draft insiders – Daniel Jeremiah, Todd McShay and Dane Brugler – and was projected to be selected no later than the middle of the second round in all but two of the mock drafts we surveyed that include two rounds or more.

There’s no consensus landing spot for Campbell – and McShay’s projected landing spot, the Raiders, is probably less likely now that they made a big move to trade for one of the NFL’s best wide receivers, Antonio Brown – but it now appears very much within the realm of possibility that Campbell could be a late first-round pick, and it will be a surprise if he isn’t selected in the first two rounds.

Dre’Mont Jones, DT

Norris: Round 1, No. 28 overall, Los Angeles Chargers
Easterling: Round 2, No. 50 overall, Minnesota Vikings
Lombardo: Round 2, No. 50 overall, Minnesota Vikings
Draft Tek: Round 2, No. 50 overall, Minnesota Vikings
Trapasso: Round 2, No. 56 overall, New England Patriots

It’s unusual to see a consensus landing spot for a player who is widely projected to be drafted in the middle of the second round, but the popular projection for Jones in mock drafts so far has been the Minnesota Vikings’ 50th overall pick, where he lands in three of the five mock drafts that included the Ohio State defensive tackle this time around.

Even though the Vikings already drafted one defensive tackle from Ohio State last year, when they selected Jalyn Holmes in the fourth round and moved him inside, they are likely to be in the market for another defensive tackle – particularly, one like Jones who is a disruptive interior penetrator – after reportedly losing Sheldon Richardson to the Cleveland Browns in free agency.

It’s still possible that Jones could sneak into the late first round of the draft, but with unspectacular testing results at the combine and a draft class of defensive linemen that’s loaded with top prospects, it appears more likely that he will end up somewhere in Round 2.

Michael Jordan, OL

Draft Tek: Round 3, No. 77 overall, Carolina Panthers

Terry McLaurin, WR

Draft Tek: Round 4, No. 108 overall, New York Giants
Easterling: Round 4, No. 115 overall, Carolina Panthers

Isaiah Prince, OT

Draft Tek: Round 4, No. 117 overall, Atlanta Falcons

Mike Weber, RB

Draft Tek: Round 4, No. 129 overall, Dallas Cowboys

There haven’t been many seven-round mock drafts published since the NFL Scouting Combine, so we don’t have a good range of projections to look at for the Buckeyes who aren’t projected to be selected in the first two rounds. Draft Tek’s most recent computer simulation, however, projects that eight Buckeyes will be selected in the 2019 NFL draft – all within the first four rounds.

Once you get past the second round, it’s exceedingly difficult to project where a player ultimately will ultimately land, but Jordan, McLaurin, Prince and Weber all appear as though they should at least be drafted within the middle rounds.

Two other Buckeyes who should have a shot to be drafted, though they weren’t included in Draft Tek’s seven-round projection, are cornerback Kendall Sheffield and wide receiver Johnnie Dixon. Sheffield has been projected to be selected as early as the third round in earlier mock drafts, but he missed out on his chance to solidify himself as a middle-round pick when he suffered a partial pectoral tear during the bench press at the combine, which prevented him from participating in an on-field workout and could prevent him from participating in Ohio State’s March 20 pro day, as well.

How to pick the perfect Disney World bag      Cache   Translate Page
This is part 1 of a 2 part series. Today is how to choose the perfect Disney World bag. Tomorrow is how to pack the perfect park bag.

Not sure how I would function at Walt Disney World without a good bag. I have read that people purposefully don't take a bag because there is nothing they need, especially with the introduction of Magic Bands. I couldn't handle this. First of all, my pockets would be full of junk (maps, money, ID, phone, etc.). Not sure I could handle that. I am a girl and I don't wear huge cargo shorts like men do.

I heard people argue that Disney has everything that you need. You can get free ice water at counter service restaurants, Bandaids at the Baby Care Center, and that your Magic Band does everything.

Here is my argument to those people:

Yes, I get the free ice water but I am also a dining plan person. Usually with my breakfast counter service meal I will fill my free mug up with soda or coffee and then get a bottled water or soda as my drink that comes with my meal. I then save that bottled drink for the park that day. I like having something with a lid if I am in line for a ride or if I am making use of Disney's free transportation.

Yes, Disney provides Bandaids, Tylenol, and whatever else at each of their parks. BUT what if I am getting ready to get in line at Space Mountain and find that I have hurt myself and am bleeding? I would have to traipse all the way over to the Baby Care Center to get a Bandaid and then go all the way back over to Space Mountain (probably missing out on a short line). If I had my tiny First Aide kit that I made here, then I wouldn't have to miss my short line, I could patch myself up and then ride!!

Yes, my Magic Band does everything. Yes, it is fabulous. The problem is this, to purchase some things you have to have your ID, as well. Also, there are some things that just require cash (balloons, food carts) and not something linked to my credit card. Because of this, I carry a small wallet to keep everything together and tidy.

Now on to my perfect Disney bag. I always have a bag. My kids are also told to carry bags because I will not carry their stuff. This may sound harsh but I am not Hagrid, I am not the keeper of the keys. If you want to bring it, you carry it. That includes your phone, money, maps, time guides, pressed penny money, etc.

Don't you just love Hagrid?

In years past, I have tried out several different bags. I carried a Vera Bradley backpack, which was great but was bothersome to put on/take off for rides and such. I have also used a cross body purse, which left horrid tan lines when I went one year in July and it doesn't hold much stuff.  I have used a tote bag, one of those Disney World spend ______ amount and you get the privilege of buying this item at this price (I am a sucker for those deals), and the tote bag seems to be the best option for ME. My mom prefers her backpack because the weight of what she is carrying is easily distributed on her back. My kids use those string styled backpacks (Xander has Adidas and Eve now has Thirty-One).

I used my Mickey Mouse bag last year but it is black and hard to find stuff that falls into the bottom. I liked having a tote, though. If we were riding a big ride (think Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey) the kids could put their backpacks into my tote bag and then my mom would only have 1 bag to watch and it would be easier for her to meander around with 1 as opposed to 3 bags.

In 2010, I spent $20 so I could buy this cute bag for $19.95.

This summer I tried out my new Thirty-One Retro Metro Fold-over bag at the Indianapolis Zoo. I loved it. It is light colored and I can see things easily if they fall to the bottom. What is also nice is the 2 outside pockets, I used one for my phone and one for my water bottle. It is a cross body which like I said before leaves nasty tan lines but it also has tote bag style straps, so it can be worn either way.

I have decided that this bag is the best for me. I highly recommend it. It comes in several colors and you can have it personalized.

When choosing the right bag for YOU make sure you try it out before your trip. Take it grocery shopping, to the zoo, or on a field trip with your kids. If it is easy to carry, not too heavy, you can find stuff easily, and doesn't make you crazy, then you found the best bag for you.

Experts to talk AI, improved verification practices and high-demand markets
03/13/2019
SSN Staff

IRVING, Texas—Security professionals will converge on Indianapolis, June 3-6, for the Electronic Security Expo (ESX) 2019, a key industry event where experts will explore today’s video surveillance and monitoring trends and share best practices during the conference’s peer-led breakout sessions.

While the global market size of surveillance is projected to nearly double by 2024, according to a report from Market Study Report, technological advances, increased public awareness of the role of surveillance and an increased adoption of artificial intelligence solutions are all driving demand for products and services in the electronic security industry.

ESX 2019 will look at how major players are already making moves to grow their market share, and how other businesses can be sure they get their piece of the growing video surveillance pie.

According to ESX, the solution lies in “getting ahead of the curve, and that comes through preparation and education. The passionate professionals who attend these breakout sessions will leave better informed, so they can take advantage of the oft-projected growth of the global video surveillance market.”

Accomplished security professionals their peers will discuss ways to tap into this growth, such as reaching high-demand markets, adopting artificial intelligence solutions and implementing streamlined processes for monitoring centers.

Sessions will include:
•    Artificial Intelligence (AI) Real Time Video Monitoring Solutions to Take the Guess Work out of Alarm Verification;
•    Top 3 Ways to Grow Your Video RMR;
•    The Manager’s Guide to Monitoring Center Benchmarking: Top Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to Manage Change;
•    When Time is Actually Money: How to Streamline New Technology Deployments in the Monitoring Center; and
•    5 Hot Markets for Video Surveillance.

Click here to learn more about the education offered at ESX and see the full schedule. The early-bird rate of $250 is available until April 19.

          I've landed      Cache   Translate Page

I’m on a small airplane, somewhere over Indiana or Ohio, Coldplay’s “Don’t Panic” is playing in my earbuds. I’m looking down on my life from 30,000 feet, as I feel I have been for the past month and a half. I’m finally on my way home.

When I last had the chance to write, I was in an entirely different place than I am today. We deeply enjoyed our last days as Cincinnatian’s, packed our things, and went on our way. Hershey, PA was our ultimate destination, and I knew so very little of how winding that journey home would be or how much I would learn on my way there. From Cincinnati, we visited Charleston for a week with our family. Right before we were to leave, I got hit in the face with a line drive at a minor league baseball game and have been in bed ever since. Through the ups and downs of the past six weeks, my only regret is having been so consumed by my every day that I did not recognize all of the signs that were pointing me toward a slower, more purposeful life, and that it took getting smacked in the face with a line drive to really slow me down, to really wake me up.

A long story short, the accident caused a pretty significant concussion, and my brain needed rest. I laid in bed – tired, sad, confused, angry – the timing was bad. I’m the social organizer for our family and I couldn’t even get out of bed as we moved into a new house in a new town and didn’t know a soul. My presence online faded to black. Text messages went unanswered. Twitter carried on without me. And I laid in the dark with only my thoughts.

When I was able to talk to my friends and family again, the biggest question they would ask was “How are you?” I don’t know how I was. I still don’t know how I am. My brain isn’t working right. My decision making isn’t rational. I go to rehab. Sometimes I check my email. I talk to the kids. I go for a walk. I go back to sleep. There’s been lots of crying trying to understand and make sense of all of this, and as the fog starts to dissipate, it is all becoming clear to me. I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.

I left my house on Thursday morning last week with the goal of attending the most soul-filling event with the most awe-inspiring strangers and friends that I’ve ever met anywhere in the world. I was bound for Palo Alto, and I hid in a stall in the bathroom at the Harrisburg international airport, alone, and paralyzed with fear. The anxiety that I’ve acquired as a result of the concussion has been profound. I took a valium, a looked at strangers searching for support and understanding, and eventually I got on the plane. I called my husband from Chicago, overwhelmed and lost, and we walked me through how to get to my gate, how to get on the next plane, what to do when I arrive. One step at a time. I thought I could do this. I felt ready. It felt to me like what I needed, the healing presence of friends. The doctors have continued to say that only I know how I feel, and I need to balance the necessary rest with the slow challenge of rebuilding the pathways in my brain that were disrupted when I was hit with the baseball. I’m doing the best I can. I had had lunch with some new neighborhood friends the week prior, and had even made a trip to Target on my own. Social situations weren’t my problem, I thought. I couldn’t focus on a computer screen, but I could certainly have a conversation. I didn’t anticipate the overwhelming nature of the many moving parts and the many conversations that happen inside of an airport, and at a conference as vibrant as Stanford’s MedicineX.

A friend picked me up at the airport in San Francisco and for the first time in a lot of hours I felt safe again. We made our way to Palo Alto, staying with a small group of friends in an Airbnb, the perfect place away from the normal chaos of the shared spaced at the Sheraton where I’ve stayed in the past. We wore comfy clothes and caught up. We went to bed early and, in the morning, left for the conference. It was more than I could handle. A combination of physical fatigue and emotional hyper-stimulation took over and I realized that I couldn’t handle being there. I was at MedicineX for half a day and I spend the rest of my time back in the safe embrace of my friends at the Airbnb.

I’ve only ever attended MedicineX as a caregiver, and now I was a patient. But I was a patient with an invisible illness. As I stumbled past old friends on my way to get a breath of fresh air, I could only force out half a smile, maybe wave my hand, and just keep going. I saw confusion in the eyes of many old friends as I blew past with a laser focus on getting to wherever I needed to be. There were less hallway conversations, fewer hugs. But very few people knew what had happened, what I was experiencing. I wanted to stop and tell them my whole story, to listen to theirs, to reconnect like we do every year in this wonderful place, but it was taking all that I had to just focus on the immediate next step in front of me. I missed the breadth of connection that usually fills my extroverted self with so much joy, but it was replaced with a depth of connection with a simple few that was just what I needed. The best part of the conference this year was the opportunity to deepen relationships with the 5 people I shared a house with.

I laid in bed at night so disappointed in myself. I had made the wrong decision, I thought, to leave the family that I hadn’t even really been an active part of for the past 2 months, to go see my other family, my healthcare tribe. Feeling the drain brought guilt that I would be returning home and working from a void. And the entire time I knew that my brain wasn’t working right. I wasn’t sad, I was feeling sad. I wasn’t tired, I was feeling tired. I wasn’t a disappointment, I was feeling like a disappointment. There wasn’t permanence in any of this.

When I woke up on Sunday morning I was faced with the daunting task of getting on a plane again. I was still recovering from my first flight three days prior, and I wasn’t heading home. They came to my bed to coax me out of it. The drove me to the airport and arranged an escort so that I wouldn’t feel alone. They gave me hugs and laughs promises of reunions sooner rather than later. They gave me their vote of confidence that this new adventure was exactly where I’m supposed to be, and the journey is a part of that. I was on my way to starting a new job, one that I was supposed to start in August prior to getting hit in the head with a baseball. I didn’t know what would happen when I landed in Indianapolis. I didn’t know if I would be able to get to my hotel, or if I would be able to make it to orientation the next morning. I was encouraged to ride the wave, one foot in front of the other, one decision at a time. Get to the hotel. Put on my pajamas. Go to sleep.

I made it to orientation, and when the materials in front of me read, “Ask yourself everyday what you can do to improve the future” I again felt like I was just where I was supposed to be. I have a contribution to make, and I found a receptacle for it. I’m so tired of fighting, of pouring all of my energy, truly my heart and soul, into swimming against the tide. I found my wave and I’m gonna ride it for a while.

Orientation went well. My doctor and I had discussed how only I know how I feel and how it wouldn’t be a switch that turns back on, but rather a retraining of my brain, an exercising of the muscles to regain strength, physically and mentally. I spent a month laying in bed, thinking about my life from 30,000 ft above it. I fell asleep thinking about it and I woke up thinking about it. I got to sit and watch for a while. I got to take a break. The opportunity that is before me is to start exercising my mind again, in a new place and space, with this newfound experience and knowledge, at a slower pace. My new coworkers supported me in my need for breaks on those first three days. I could sit in a conference room and ask questions and take notes. I couldn’t make it out to dinner. I could sit in the common area and engage in conversation about why I said yes to this job, and what I hope to bring. I couldn’t have the same conversation while walking.

I got into an Uber yesterday afternoon on my way to the airport, finally on my way home, realizing that this was, after all, exactly what I needed. On the way to the airport, we drove past a sign for Cincinnati and I was filled with memories of that time not so long ago, of my desire to be there again where it was familiar, and safe, where it was easy and where we were all happy and life was good. What I want more than that right now is to go home, and home is in a different place now, called by a different name.

I feel like I’ve been floating above my life ever since we made the decision to move back in May, and I’m finally about to land. A thousand things have happened between now and then that have made me question our decision, and yet the universe is putting us right where we belong. The new perspective I’ve been afforded in all of this is incredible, and it’s not something that you could have ever asked for. I wouldn’t change any of it. I’m grateful for all that has happened – the pain and the fear and the uncertainty. The kids learned agility and bravery and vulnerability through this. I learned patience and kindness and gratitude. As we began our initial descent, I can’t help but feel like I’m finally landing exactly where I’m supposed to be. I wouldn’t be as tired, or as healed as I am if I hadn’t experienced the challenges of the last 6 weeks and the last 6 days. So I’m raising a glass to you, universe. A glass of sparkling water since booze is still off the table. I’m offering a toast to my team – my family and my friends, near and far, who have stuck with us on this crazy adventure. All the love to you. I want to live a life with greater purpose - the "if it's not a 'Hell Yeah!' it's a 'No'" kind of life. I want to help other people to experience this clarity and joy of living wholeheartedly without having to experience the trauma or tragedy that is often what brings us to it. Today I will get out of bed. I will pour my coffee. I will open my computer. And we will see what life brings next.

Scrubbing The Past To Give Those With A Criminal Record A Second Chance      Cache   Translate Page
Latosha Poston says she made a lot of mistakes in her life. Her legal troubles began in her teens after her first child was born in Indianapolis. Over the years, bad decisions led to some arrests, some convictions. "Sometimes we get stuck in our past and let our past guide us," she says. The 44-year-old has worked hard to straighten out her life. But her criminal records — all involving misdemeanors — continued to haunt her as she tried to find a decent job and place to live. Then, while watching the local news, she heard about Indiana's Second Chance law, passed in 2013. It allows people to petition to remove their misdemeanor convictions and arrests from public view. It hurts communities, it hurts counties and it hurts states if their citizens cannot be productively employed or aren't part of the tax base. - Jenny Roberts, professor, American University Washington College of Law Indiana is among several states to change their approach to the restoration of a person's rights and

The 'Dark Knight' Trilogy is Returning for a 70mm IMAX Tour      Cache   Translate Page

Earning nearly $2.5 billion at the box office for Warner Bros., becoming a modern superhero classic, The Dark Knight redefined the superhero genre with its dark grittiness. Now, the three films from Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy are making a comeback to the silver screen in honor of Batman's 80th anniversary later this month. The tour is set for five cities, each event screening the three movies back-to-back in a 70mm IMAX format. If you're not familiar with the 70mm format, the video below showcases how the footage compares with the original cinematic release. Those lucky enough to attend the viewing on the March 30th in Los Angeles will also get the chance to participate in a Q&A session with Nolan in a break between the second and third films. For those who can't make that viewing, worry not — a video recording of the Q&A session will be shown at all the other screenings. No information yet has been released on the pricing of tickets, but they will be available for purchase starting March 13. Show times are also yet to be released, but information on dates and locations have been announced: March 30th — Universal Cinema AMC at CityWalk in Hollywood, California April 13th — AMC Lincoln Square in New York City April 13th — AMC Metreon in San Francisco April 20th — Cinesphere Ontario Place in Toronto April 20th — IMAX Theatre at the Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis The three films and the Q&A session combined will have a run time of around 8 hours.           Gone Doctorin'      Cache   Translate Page
Off to the doctor for me this morning.  It's not going to be fun.  She wanted me to try an additional medication and the pharmacy slathered the bottle with "May cause drowsiness/Do not drive or operate heavy machinery" warnings.

This, after I thought I had raised my concerns that the last time she tried this, the (different) stuff had made it nearly impossible to do my job and had put a stop to all my hobbies.  Look, it's great to keep the ol' machinery made out of meat running, but if the process hobbles the software that runs it, what's the point?  And it's great to get regular medical attention -- but I pay for that by working and if I can't work, well....  She's not going to like this line of thought.  "Big picture" concerns don't mean much to her and she expects her dictates to be followed.  So I may be looking for a new doctor.

Since her office is not available for anything on short notice -- they want to you take your bad cold or non-urgent injury to the doc-in-a-box -- and she usually pooh-poohs any health concerns I bring -- I can just about count on the swollen knuckle, sore joints and fatigue being shrugged off -- I don't suppose it will be all that much a loss.

In all the time I've lived in Indianapolis (and nearby), I have only had two doctors I liked and trusted.  Lost track of one of them years ago when I was between jobs; he's the guy who diagnosed and treated the rheumatic fever fare-up I had nearly forty years ago.  The other one fell ill and died much too young.  I really miss him -- he was an absolutely up-front, cards-on-the-table guy, entirely confident in his medical judgement and willing to hear patients out and discuss their health and course of care.  He was a self-admitted hold-out in a world of assembly-line medicine, a man wryly amused that it took a staff of five to run his office, not counting nurses and himself.  The likelihood of ever finding another physician like him is somewhere between zero and none.
On-demand boxes save money, enhance customer experience      Cache   Translate Page
An operator in the bulk area glues the side of a case blank.
Consumer electronics company Newegg uses on-demand boxmaking to securely package products that don’t fit into its standard size cases without a lot of dunnage.

When speaking about the relationship between e-commerce and packaging, the discussion usually centers on the physical pack. Often overlooked is the innovation taking place around packaging equipment to meet the specialized needs of this channel. While traditional distribution channels involve large volumes of similar-sized packages, e-commerce requires extreme flexibility, especially in terms of secondary or tertiary packaging. Shipping cases may be constructed of heavier material to help the package withstand the 30+ touches it may undergo during distribution; void fill or insulation may be required; and case or bag sizes may need to be changed on-the-fly, among other considerations.

One category of machines that has sprung up in response to e-tailers’ need to optimize shipping-case sizes is on-demand box-making equipment, which can custom-manufacture boxes to fit each individual order size. Advantages of this technology include reduced warehouse space for premade boxes, lower shipping costs, reduced corrugated and void fill usage, and greater protection for products that fit snugly in their shipping case.

There are currently several manufacturers of this equipment. For Newegg Inc., a consumer electronics e-commerce company based in City of Industry, CA, the best solution was Packsize’s On Demand Packaging® system.

Established in 2001, Newegg offers close to 10 million consumer electronics products, with 50,000 stocked in its warehouses, and the rest offered through its market-based channels. According to Jeffrey Zeng, Senior Director of Corporate Engineering, Logistics Department for Newegg, since its launch, the company has differentiated itself through efficiency and customer service. With strategically located facilities throughout the country, Newegg can provide two-day shipping to more than 90% of the U.S. and Canada and offers will-call and various pick-up options. It also ships to more than 50 countries.

“We offer a lot of unique products with competitive pricing in the IT categories, because we are a destination for people who are either building a computer or are geeks or gamers. They want the latest and the greatest,” says Zeng. “Beyond that, we’re selling some of the same products at the same price as our competitors, so supply chain becomes the differentiator. Therefore, we focus a lot on supply chain efficiencies as well as on being very customer-centric.”

Being customer-centric means making sure the customer has a good experience with Newegg, especially post-purchase, Zeng adds. “When we ship product to the customer, besides getting it to them fast, we want to make sure the box the product comes in is optimized and secure,” he says.

One technology used by Newegg to securely package products that don’t fit into its standard size cases without a lot of dunnage—or that are too expensive to be left on a customer’s doorstep in a box clearly identifying it as having come from Newegg—is on-demand box-making. Between 2012 and 2016, Newegg installed six Packsize CNC-controlled converting machines across its four U.S. facilities, including two model EM7-25 systems at its Indianapolis facility. The 412,800-sq-ft Indy facility stocks 10,000 SKUs and uses the Packsize machine to handle 20% to 30% of its orders.

As Chuck Cornwell, Warehouse Manager for the Indianapolis site, explains, the decision to install the Packsize machines was based on the high costs of DIM weight, or dimensional weight, pricing, a method adopted by carriers such as UPS and FedEx that favors denser packages over those that are lightweight. “Most of our shipping costs are calculated by DIM weight,” Cornwell says. “Although we do have 10 large, standard-size boxes, by using them for some of our multi-SKU orders, we end up adding a lot of dunnage. If we can get a box smaller than say a #10 box [21¾ in. L x 16¾ in. W x 11¾ in. H], and we can put it in a Packsize box, we can save a lot of money on shipping.”

To determine whether an order will be packed into one of Newegg’s standard case sizes, a Packsize case, or some other packaging format, e.g., a padded envelope, the company relies on the dimensions of each product. Every time a new product comes into the warehouse, it is measured and weighed by Newegg’s Cubiscan dimensioning system. When Newegg receives an order from a customer, its Warehouse Control System—an Exacta conveyor control system from Bastian Solutions—calculates the combined dimensions of all the products and specifies the correct box size. If a custom-made box is required, the WCS sends the cubing calculation to Packsize’s PackNet software.

If the order contains a number of SKUs, for example, all the components needed to set up a computer system, it goes to Newegg’s small-item area, or “smalls,” where one of the facility’s two EM7-25 machines is located. Using the information from the WCS, the machine creates a custom case blank from Packsize’s proprietary z-Fold™, or fan-fold, corrugated stock. Newegg uses 32 ECT E-flute corrugated made with 100% virgin material, which provides the sturdiness required for the high-value items the company ships. The machine in smalls is equipped with three tracks, each holding a different width of corrugated—17¾, 23½, and 28¾ in.—to minimize scrap. Notes Zeng, the machine can create 200-plus case sizes, accommodating Newegg’s most common SKUs.

Once the case blank exits the machine, an operator seals the side of the case using a Nordson adhesive system, erects the case, and applies an LPN (license plate number) label that was printed at the same time as case converting. From there, the operator places the case on an infeed conveyor. As the case is carried along the conveyor, scanners read the LPN and direct the case to those zones (there are three) from which the items in the order are picked and packed. When the order is complete, the case is conveyed to the shipping area, where labels are automatically printed and applied.

The other EM7-25 is located in what Newegg calls the bulk area. Here, items like laptops and other high-value electronics are packed in custom-made cases that do not carry Newegg branding. “We’d love to have the Newegg name on the box, but if someone sees a box on a doorstep that has our name on it and is the size of a laptop, they’re going to know what’s in it,” says Cornwall. “So, it’s best to use a plain box for those products.”

For these items, pick operators “pick to card,” meaning they scan a card with the order and then find the item (for bulk, it’s usually just one) from pallet stacks. They then deliver a number of orders on a pallet to the Packsize along with the card for each order. Here, the Packsize operator scans the card, which tells the machine what size box to create from one of three sizes of corrugated—17¾, 23½, or 31¼ in. Once the box is glued and erected, the operator manually packs it with product. From there, another operator adds air pillows, if needed. Next, the case is conveyed through a 3M case taper, after which it is conveyed to the shipping area.

The Packsize machine in smalls runs at 1,000 to 1,200 cases/shift; in bulk, it’s 490/shift. (The EM7-25 is capable of running at 250 to 500 cases/hr, depending on the box size.) Explains Cornwall, “We’re not necessarily worried about the speed, but rather the throughput of the entire process. Ultimately, it’s all about the customer experience, so we focus on the flow of merchandise to the shipping dock to get the order to the customer within two days.”

Comment on Eyes on Milwaukee: Construction To Start on Three Downtown Hotels by tom kahn      Cache   Translate Page
Great news about the three new hotels coming next year, but the larger question still remains, when will funding be available for the addition of the convention center? This problem has existed for decades going back to the old MECCA convention barn in the 70's. The new convention center in 2000 promised a phase 3 expansion on the parking lot next to the existing center, but it's been almost two decades. There is hope with the rendering of the expansion plans to over 4000,000 sq. ft. of convention facility to be able to compete with Minneapolis and Indianapolis for business previous lost due to a lack of space. While this is hopeful news, the other main problem is a signature hotel of at least 500 rooms in close proximity. This is Milwaukee's best chance to obtain jobs and convention business that too long have bypassed our city.

Event Update For 2019-03-11      Cache   Translate Page

http://jumpingjackflashhypothesis.blogspot.com/2012/02/jumping-jack-flash-hypothesis-its-gas.html

The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

Centennial celebrations, coast to coast      Cache   Translate Page

As The American Legion prepares to celebrate its 100th anniversary on March 15, American Legion posts, districts and departments are preparing to host their own centennial events for months. Some events are focusing on The American Legion’s 100th birthday, while others are tying the event in with other American Legion programs.

Florida is using the latter as its way to celebrate. American Legion Riders will participate in a 100-mile ride March 16 to both honor the Legion’s centennial and raise funds for Post 375 in Southport, Fla., which was destroyed by Hurricane Michael last fall. Rides are expected to take place statewide, including a ride to and from Post 10 in Kissimmee. And as part of 100th birthday activities at Post 63 in Winter Garden, Fla., American Legion members will present a flag to the father of a fallen soldier. The father’s previous flag was lost in a house fire.

And in Kansas, American Legion Pearce-Keller Post 17 in Manhattan is hosting both the department’s 100th birthday event and Oratorical Contest on March 16. About seven orators will compete in the morning for a chance to be named the Department of Kansas Oratorical winner and advance to The American Legion’s National Oratorical Contest in Indianapolis April 5-7. Following the competition, a birthday dinner will be held with hundreds of Legion Family members. Birthday dinner remarks will be provided by Department of Kansas Commander Dan Wiley, Auxiliary President Karen Hasting and Sons of The American Legion Detachment Commander Terry Harris.

In Texas, Royse City American Legion Post 100 will host a community celebration of The American Legion’s birthday on March 16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Military Heritage Museum. There will be free food, kids’ games and activities, and free military vehicle rides. At 12:30 p.m., there will be a showing of “Sgt. Stubby,” an animated movie about a World War I Army dog that became an American Legion member. Additionally, the Auxiliary unit will host a poppy coloring booth for children.

While some American Legion posts and districts already have celebrated The American Legion centennial, many events are still to come. The following is a sample of submitted American Legion centennial events and activities, listed by state.           Hustle & Flow      Cache   Translate Page
Urban Meyer didn't google "Ohio State football" to learn about what he had just gotten himself into.

He had punched the clock at the university previously, back during his mustache days. Earle Bruce was like a second father. Urban's actual father had a portrait of Woody Hayes hanging in his childhood home. You could say he was overprepared for the whole Ahia thing.

It's hard to imagine an Ohio State head coach wandering into the Graveyard blindfolded, but it happens. John Cooper famously called the Horseshoe Buckeye Stadium after he was hired and didn't quite figure out the whole Michigan thing until his career was over.

He also complained that his inherited roster had too many slow, white guys. This was during the 1980s, at Ohio State - a team that was regularly on television and won often, but rarely if ever due to team speed. Coop couldn't google "three yards and a cloud of dust" to study what he had gotten himself into back in 1988, and apparently he had never seen Ohio State play football until he began roaming the sideline at Buckeye Stadium himself.

He was blindfolded in the Graveyard up until the moment he took permanent residence in it. You could say Coop was...underprepared. He brought a lot of helpful things but that was bizarre.

Joey Bosa and Evan Spencer never felt like imports in Columbus. They were Eric's nephew and Tim's kid, respectively.

During his January 2001 interview in the frantic days that followed Coop's firing - and at at the bottom of the Buckeyes' hard luck streak with the Wolverines - Oregon coach Mike Bellotti reportedly asked Andy Geiger if Ohio State had to play Michigan every season. Sidebar: Kids, adults are lying to you. Old people lie all the time - there is a such thing as a dumb question and Bellotti asked one that eliminated him from contention for a job he had traveled cross-country to pursue. Dude, read something on the plane next time.

Ohio State eventually settled on Jim Tressel, a guy whose only blindfold involved what he viewed as menial administrative and unnecessarily regulatory tasks. It worked out marvelously.

But he still went gray, quickly - and that's in large part because OSU Head Coach is the second-most important job in the state behind OSU Starting Quarterback. The Buckeyes are Ohio's team. Ohio is also where football coaches and a whole lot of players are minted at an early age, which makes them a bit of a dream too. It's a job with 10 million bosses. And you thought just having one was bad enough.

The football program, to put it mildly, is a precious asset. The pressure is immense. It only takes a few seasons for the head coach's hair to start to look like the helmet (quarterbacks mercifully run out of eligibility, but unfortunate things still happen to their hair). Tressel knew all of this, having punched the clock at the university previously during what should have been his mustache days.

And Urban knew it too. Ohio State football is historically made for and by Ohioans.

He made that messaging the primary component of his introductory press conference, and then again when he introduced his first staff - and wife - noting that every one of his hires or retentions had been made in whole or part by the great state they were intent on making proud:

That was only seven years ago. The premium on being from Ohio and participating in Ohio State football is barely discussed anymore.

Meyer inherited Huber Heights' Braxton Miller, Cardinal Mooney's John Simon and dozens of other local legends who lived everyone's dream by making it all the way to Columbus, including an entire offensive line unit that was made in Ohio. Seventy of the players on the 2012 roster were playing for their home team.

Two of the three scholarship quarterbacks were Ohio hometown heroes. The third, Kenny Guiton, committed to Ohio State from Houston without having ever been to Ohio. That's one of only two known methods for gaining honorary state citizenship.

Three seasons later, Urban's 2014 team was still largely homegrown, from the entire O-line again to the star linebacker, deep threat receiver and even the QB-Safety Bromance. Of course there were imports that were indispensable - a starting tailback from St. Louis being the most notable one. But there was more than one star who gained honorary state citizenship through legacy, the other method, which Guiton was unable to use.

The rush end from Florida and the wide receiver from Illinois never felt like imports in Columbus. They were Eric's nephew and Tim's kid, respectively. They were "from Ohio" too even if their high schools were not.

Fast-forward to present day, and new head coach Ryan Day's Ohio roots can be traced all the way back to 2017. That's when Meyer brought him in on Chip Kelly's sterling recommendation, to replace Tim Beck, whom he had brought in on Ed Warinner's recommendation. Day was New Hampshire's Gatorade Player of the Year in high school and stayed home to play for New Hampshire, where he set passing records while playing for Kelly.

Once imported into Ohio, he mentored J.T. Barrett (Texas), Dwayne Haskins (Maryland) and Joe Burrow (Athens) until Burrow transferred (Louisiana). He and Larry Johnson were Meyer's first high-profile No-Ohio-Ties-Whatsoever hires beyond the first staff with whom he also had no previous relationship (Greg Schiano, Bill Davis). Something funny happened to the premium placed on Ohio roots between that basketball halftime video back in 2012 and now. Losing nine total games over seven seasons was so shiny we hardly noticed.

The same thing has been happening, albeit more slowly, to the top job in the state for some time. Justin Zwick, Troy Smith, Todd Boeckman, Braxton Miller and Cardale Jones covered a 12-year stretch where Ohio QBs were on the roster, interrupted only by the brief Terrelle Pryor (Pennsylvania)-Joe Bauserman (Virginia/Florida)-Guiton period. In Pryor's case, Ohio State had literally it's highest-rated recruit of all time taking snaps.

The period was justified. Perhaps you're old enough to remember the unprecedented hoopla of Pryor's recruitment. The pre-Internet Joe Pickens (Ohio) recruiting saga was an afternoon tea by comparison.

Justin Fields (Georgia) just replaced Pryor atop the Buckeyes' highest-rated recruits list, albeit as a transfer. His arrival directly resulted in Tate Martell (Nevada) leaving for Miami (Florida). Fields now occupies the top job in the state along with Matthew Baldwin (Texas) and will likely be Ohio State's starter for its 2019 opener and Day's fourth-ever game as head coach (FAU).

Once he wins the job, Fields will be handing off to J.K. Dobbins (Texas) and throwing to K.J. Hill (Arkansas), Austin Mack (Indiana), Ben Victor (Florida) and Chris Olave (California). Of the projected offensive line starters, only Josh Meyers and Thayer Munford are homegrown. The coaching staff's ties only give a slight edge to Ohio. Two of the 2019 assistants who now report to Day reported to Jim Harbaugh the last time the Buckeyes played a home game (Buckeye Stadium).

This team from the head coach on down brings a decidedly-imported feel heading into 2019, a season in which Ohio State will be attempting to threepeat (Indianapolis). Fields snapped up the opportunity to play for Haskins' polymath position coach who is now situated at the program's biggest desk.

His hair has yet to show signs of anxiety. Day does not seem underprepared or overprepared. He's just prepared.

He didn't have to google "Ohio State football" to learn about what he's getting himself into, but the job he has now was not on his radar when his likely starting quarterback was a high school senior. Dreams are funny. The Buckeyes have been dominant going on 17 seasons now, with only a couple of exceptions. It's a run that spans the memories of literally every player on the current team.

Maybe that's why playing - or coaching - for the Buckeyes is no longer a regional dream. The only question is if Ohioans will be just as willing to embrace a machine that's largely manufactured with imported parts.

Trey Leroux and Dawand Jones Add Size to Future of Ohio State's Offensive Line      Cache   Translate Page

When it comes to Ohio State’s strategy for adding depth along the offensive line, maybe size does matter. The Buckeyes have added two tackles – one signed, one committed – in the last two classes that don’t particularly pop off the ratings sheet but certainly stand out on the field.

Dawand Jones, a 6-foot-8, 360-pound tackle out of Indianapolis, Indiana, signed to be a part of the Buckeyes' 2019 recruiting class, and Trey Leroux, a 6-foot-8, 320-pound tackle out of Norwalk, Ohio, announced his commitment to the Buckeyes on Monday evening.

Jones was rated as the No. 83 offensive tackle in his class, while Leroux is the No. 92 tackle in the 2020 class. These ratings simply show that neither tackle is polished at the position yet, which is understandable for Jones, who played only two years of varsity high school football. Leroux’s head coach signified that the Ohio native has been working to get his body into better playing shape as well and is still in the process.

What Ohio State is getting out of the two tackles is massive bodies with equally massive upside.

Ohio State Offensive Line Additions (last four classes)
Class Player Rating Rankings
2019 Ryan Jacoby 4 stars No. 23 OT
2019 Harry Miller 5 stars No. 2 OC
2019 Enokk Vimahi 4 stars No. 7 OG
2019 Dawand Jones 3 stars No. 86 OT
2018 Nicholas Peitit-Frere 5 stars No. 1 OT
2018 Matthew Jones 4 stars No. 1 OC
2018 Max Wray 4 stars No. 9 OT
2017 Wyatt Davis 5 stars No. 1 OG
2017 Josh Myers 4 stars No. 2 OG
2017 Thayer Munford 4 stars No. 28 OT
2020 (committed) Paris Johnson, Jr. 5 stars No. 1 OT
2020 (committed) Luke Wypler 4 stars No. 1 OC
2020 (committed) Jakob James 3 stars No. 75 OT
2020 (committed) Trey Leroux 3 stars No. 96 OT

No player on the current Ohio State roster is as large as either of the two prospects. The tallest players are redshirt freshman Max Wray and redshirt senior Branden Bowen, who are both 6-foot-7. Jones has 47 pounds on the heaviest Ohio State offensive lineman, sophomore Wyatt Davis.

Both Leroux and Jones will likely slim up and add strength to their frames, but what’s encouraging for the Buckeyes is the raw athleticism both tackles have coming into college. Jones plays center for Ben Davis High School’s basketball team and was named Marion County Player of the Year with 18 points per game and nine rebounds per game. Leroux plays both sides of the line and is shown in his film playing along the entire line, from defensive end as an edge rusher, chasing quarterbacks and tailing screens, to defensive tackle, where he blows through double teams with ease.

Both linemen are potential home runs for Ohio State if development goes as planned with one or both. But what should be most encouraging for Ohio State fans is the confidence that the Ohio State’s staff is showing in the current underclassmen offensive linemen on the roster.

The last three recruiting classes have offered several high-tier offensive line prospects, even though the Buckeyes have missed out on some in-state recruits. Former five-star recruit Wyatt Davis – the No. 1 guard in the 2017 class – and four-star Josh Myers are likely to be on the field this year, while 2018 No. 1 offensive tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere might be needed at right tackle at some point this season as well. Matthew Jones was also the No. 1 center in the 2018 class.

Ohio State has to like its position with Cincinnati five-star No. 1 2020 tackle Paris Johnson, Jr., and 2019’s No. 30 overall prospect in Harry Miller is in his first year in the program. That stacks up quite a future at the position, so if neither Jones nor Leroux pan out, they can at least provide depth on the line. But if they do develop according to plan, the Buckeyes could be looking at not only a massive offensive line room but also one of the better up-and-coming lines in the Big Ten.

Further Limiting the Courts, Amendment 11

The Judicial Branchwas added almost as an afterthought. The judiciary was originally designed to be the weakest of the three branches of government. The Anti-Federalists feared the judicial branch becoming a judicial oligarchy, and therefore the judicial branch was constructed to only apply the law to cases they hear.  All opinions the judges may have of the law after reviewing the law was considered to be only opinion.  Any changes to law, regardless of what the courts felt about the law, could only be made legislatively.  However, soon after the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, fears of a tyrannical court arose, and so additional limits were placed on the federal courts by the 11th Amendment.  No case against a State by citizens of another State, or by the citizens or subjects of a foreign state, shall be heard by a federal court.

The 11th Amendment changes the intent of Article III.  As limited as the courts were supposed to be, the Founding Fathers realized the courts weren't limited enough, and as a result, the 11th Amendment wound up being ratified in 1795.

Federal judges maintained that the federal courts should have the power of judicial review, or the power to determine the constitutionality of laws.  In response to the judicial urgings for the powers to judge the extent of the federal government's powers, in the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions of 1798, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison warned us that giving the federal government through its courts the power of judicial review would be a power that would continue to grow, regardless of elections, putting at risk the all important separation of powers, and other much-touted limits on power. The final arbiters of the Constitution are not supposed to be the courts, argued these Founding Fathers who were believers in the limiting principles of the U.S. Constitution.  The power of the federal government must be checked by State governments, and the people.  The States and the People are the enforcers and protectors of the U.S. Constitution.

As you may recall, John Jay, the first Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, resigned his position in 1795, disappointed in how few powers the federal courts had.  When approached later by President John Adams to return to the United States Supreme Court as the high court’s Chief Justice, Jay turned Adams down.  He said the Court lacked "the energy, weight, and dignity which are essential to its affording due support to the national government."  He also did not wish to serve under Thomas Jefferson, the victor in the 1800 Presidential Election, who was an advocate of limited government, and a judicial branch that existed as the weakest of the three branches of government.

While John Jay was Chief Justice, among the influences of his decision that the court was too weak to promote a strong, centralized national government, was the case of Chisholm v. Georgia in 1793, which eventually led to the proposal, and ratification, of the 11th Amendment.  A citizen of South Carolina sued Georgia for the value of clothing supplied by a merchant during the Revolutionary War.  After Georgia refused to appear, claiming immunity as a sovereign state, as per the Constitution (Article III, Section 2) the federal courts took the case.  The nationalist view by the justices deemed that in this case Georgia was not a sovereign State; therefore, the Supreme Court entered a default judgment against Georgia.  What ensued was a conflict between federal jurisdiction and state sovereignty that reminded the anti-federalists of their fears of a centralized federal government consolidating the States, and destroying their right to individual sovereignty.

Realizing that the clause in Article III gave the federal courts too much power over State Sovereignty, Congress immediately proposed the 11th Amendment in order to take away federal court jurisdiction in suits commenced against a State by citizens of another State, or of a foreign state.  This is the first instance in which a Supreme Court decision was superseded by a constitutional amendment, and evidence that the Founders saw the legislative branch and the States as being more powerful parts of government than the judiciary.

Terms:

Constitutional Amendment - Changes made to an existing constitution.

Judicial Branch - The branch of the United States Government responsible for the administration of justice; a central judiciary that is limited to federal authorities, and separated from the will of the central leadership.

Judicial Review - The unconstitutional authority of the federal courts to review law, interpret the Constitution regarding laws, and then determine the constitutionality of laws.

National Government - Any political organization that is put in place to maintain control of a nation; a strong central government that does not recognize the individualism or local authorities of the smaller parts, such as states, of the nation.

Separation of Powers - A division of governmental authority into three branches: legislative, executive, and judicial; division of powers between the States and federal government.

Questions for Discussion:

1.  Why did the Founding Fathers design our governmental system with the Judicial Branch being the weakest of the three branches of government?

2.  Why is judicial review only supposed to be an opinion?

3.  How did Chisholm v. Georgia change the authorities granted to the federal judiciary?

4.  How does the 11th Amendment protect State Sovereignty?

Electoral Procedures for Electing President Changed, Amendment 12

Electors shall meet in their respective states, and vote by ballot for President and Vice-President, one of whom, at least, shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves; they shall name in their ballots the person voted for as President, and in distinct ballots the person voted for as Vice-President, and they shall make distinct lists of all persons voted for as President, and all persons voted for as Vice-President and of the number of votes for each, which lists they shall sign and certify, and transmit sealed to the seat of the government of the United States, directed to the President of the Senate. The President of the Senate shall, in the presence of the Senate and House of Representatives, open all the certificates and the votes shall then be counted. The person having the greatest Number of votes for President, shall be the President, if such number be a majority of the whole number of Electors appointed; and if no person have such majority, then from the persons having the highest numbers not exceeding three on the list of those voted for as President, the House of Representatives shall choose immediately, by ballot, the President. But in choosing the President, the votes shall be taken by states, the representation from each state having one vote; a quorum for this purpose shall consist of a member or members from two-thirds of the states, and a majority of all the states shall be necessary to a choice. And if the House of Representatives shall not choose a President whenever the right of choice shall devolve upon them, before the fourth day of March next following, then the Vice-President shall act as President, as in the case of the death or other constitutional disability of the President. The person having the greatest number of votes as Vice-President, shall be the Vice-President, if such number be a majority of the whole number of Electors appointed, and if no person have a majority, then from the two highest numbers on the list, the Senate shall choose the Vice-President; a quorum for the purpose shall consist of two-thirds of the whole number of Senators, and a majority of the whole number shall be necessary to a choice. But no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States.”

The 12th Amendment changes the procedure for electing the President and Vice President originally provided for in Article II, Section 1, Clause 3.  The procedure has remained the same since its ratification, save for the States changing their procedures from appointing the electors by the choice of the State legislatures, thus following the instructions of the State legislatures, to the citizens voting for who the electors are expected to vote for.  Though the electors are free to vote for anyone eligible to be President, in practice they usually vote for the candidates chosen by the voters in their State.  1824 is the last election in which electors were primarily appointed by their State legislature.  In that election, six states followed that procedure.  South Carolina was the final State to follow the practice, ceasing the appointment of their electors by the State legislature upon the approach of the American Civil War.

Each State is constitutionally allowed to choose how to appoint or elect their electors, and the methods vary from State to State.  Generally, electors are nominated by their State political parties in the months prior to Election Day.  In some States, the electors are nominated in primaries, the same way that other candidates are nominated.  Other States nominate their electors in party conventions.

The need for the 12th Amendment became apparent after the problems that arose in the elections of 1796 and 1800.  The Twelfth Amendment was proposed by the Congress on December 9, 1803, and was ratified by the requisite number of state legislatures on June 15, 1804.

Before the 12th Amendment, electors could vote for two candidates, though at least one had to be from a State different from that of the elector (as a protection against a larger State dominating the federal government).  A majority of the vote needed to be received in order to win the presidency.  If no candidate received a majority vote, then the House of Representatives chose the President.

In 1800, after a tie in the Electoral College, the House tied 36 times. That particular election was marked by a battle between the Federalists, and Jefferson’s Democratic-Republicans.  Even though Burr was Jefferson’s running mate, Aaron Burr wound up Jefferson’s adversary when the vote went to the House.  The lame-duck House controlled by the Federalists threw their support behind Burr, because they did not trust Jefferson’s philosophy of a limited government.

The term Electoral College did not appear until the early 1800s, and did not appear in legislation until 1845.  The concept was designed to act in a manner similar to Congress, where a portion of the election was connected to the population-based premise that was also used by the House of Representatives, and another portion of the Electoral College would be based on the State appointment premise used by the U.S. Senate.

In Federalist No. 39, James Madison explained that the Constitution was designed to be a mixture of State-based and population-based government.

In Federalist No. 10, James Madison argued against "an interested and overbearing majority" and the "mischiefs of faction" in an electoral system.  His definition of “faction” in relation to elections was "a number of citizens whether amounting to a majority or minority of the whole, who are united and actuated by some common impulse of passion, or of interest, adverse to the rights of other citizens, or to the permanent and aggregate interests of the community."  In a republic it was necessary, according to Madison, to vary the distribution of powers, including those powers held by the members of the populace.  Only a thorough division of power throughout the American System would protect the United States from the excesses of democracy, and countervail against factions.  Madison further explained that the greater the population and expanse of the Republic, the more difficulty factions would face in organizing due to such issues as sectionalism.

Prior to the 12th Amendment, the choice of the Vice President went to the second place winner of the presidential election.  The Vice President, unlike the President, did not require the votes of a majority of electors.  If a tie arose, the Vice President was chosen by the Senate, with each Senator casting one vote.  Though it was not specified in the Constitution whether the sitting Vice President could cast a tie-breaking vote for Vice President, because the sitting Vice President is President of the Senate and casts the tie-breaking vote, it is assumed that if that situation had arisen, the sitting Vice President would indeed be the deciding vote for his successor.  Because the second place winner became Vice President, it was very possible for the President and the Vice President to be from different parties.  In fact, that is what happened in the 1796 election.  John Adams won that election as the Federalist Party candidate, and Jefferson became the Vice President as a Democratic-Republican candidate.  The fear was that by the two men being of different parties, the Vice President may do what he could to impede the ability of the President, or could even launch an effort to remove the President from office so that the Vice President could succeed to the office of the President.

The 12th Amendment eliminated the possibility of problems arising between the President and Vice President due to them being from different parties by having the President and Vice President elected as a ticket, thus lessening the Vice President's motivation for staging a coup.

The 12th Amendment also eliminated the “two votes for presidential candidates” method, changing it instead to the electors casting distinct votes for President and Vice President.

The 12th Amendment indicates that no elector may vote for both candidates of a presidential ticket if both candidates inhabit the same State as that elector, a provision consistent with the Framer’s original language against collusion.

The 12th Amendment also clarified language to not allow those constitutionally ineligible to be President from being Vice President.

A majority of Electoral Votes is still required for one to be elected President or Vice President.  As in the case before the 12th Amendment, when nobody has a majority, the House of Representatives, voting by States and with the same quorum requirements as under the original procedure, chooses a President.  The 12th Amendment requires the House of Representatives to choose from the three highest receivers of Electoral Votes, rather than the top five as was the process under Article II, Section 1, Clause 3.

The Senate chooses the Vice President if no candidate receives a majority of Electoral Votes. The 12th Amendment requires a quorum of two-thirds for balloting.

Terms:

Collusion - Conspire together.

Electoral College - A body of electors chosen by the voters in each State to elect the President and Vice President of the United States.

Limited Government - A government that acts within the limitations granted to it; a governmental system that is restrained by an enumerated list of authorities; a limited government is the essence of liberty.

Quorum - Minimum number of members of an assembly necessary to conduct the business of that group.

Sectionalism - Loyalty to the interests of one's own region or section of the country, rather than to the country as a whole; loyalty to a political agenda or ideology rather than to the country as a whole.

Questions for Discussion:

1.  Why did the States originally appoint electors, rather than the electors being elected directly by the popular vote by the public?

2.  What lessons did the Election of 1800 provide?

3.  Now that the presidential election is determined by party tickets, which ensures
