Ken Henderson (#39)      Cache   Translate Page
Ken Henderson played outfield for 16 seasons from 1965-1980. His first 8 seasons were with the Giants, then he spent the last half of his career with 6 teams, most notably the White Sox.

I will always remember him as a Giants' spare outfielder, because that was his status when I started collecting cards, but he finally won a full-time job with the Giants from 1970-72, and the White Sox and Braves from 1974-76.

Henderson was signed by the Giants in June 1964, and made his major-league debut at age 18 in April 1965. Ken spent all of 1965 as the Giants' 5th outfielder, but played most of 1966-68 back in the minors.

After starting outfielders Ollie Brown and Jesus Alou were lost in the expansion draft, Henderson stuck with the Giants for good at the start of 1969. Although he was the team's #2 outfielder in terms of total innings played that season, he was a corner-outfield swing man, backing up Bobby Bonds in right field and splitting the left field starts with Dave Marshall.

Marshall was traded to the Mets after the 1969 season, enabling Henderson to be the team's primary left fielder for the next 3 seasons.

After the 1972 season, he was traded to the White Sox. Ken was a backup outfielder in 1973, but became the every-day center fielder for the next 2 years, starting 159 games there in '74 and 136 games in '75. (This is news to me!)

After that it was on to the Braves, where he spent 1 season as their right fielder, having been exchanged for Ralph Garr.

The rest of Henderson’s career was a series of whistle stops as a bench player: 1977 with the Rangers, 1978 with the Mets and Reds, 1979 with the Reds and Cubs, and then wrapping up his career in 1980 with the Cubs, until getting his release in July.

I'm really surprised that Henderson played any seasons as a regular. 1974 was his career year with 602 at bats, 76 runs, 176 hits, 35 doubles, 5 triples, 20 home runs, 95 RBI, 66 walks, and a .292 batting average in 162 games.
Mankiw on teaching economics, by Scott Sumner      Cache   Translate Page

David Henderson directed me to a new paper by Greg Mankiw, which discusses principles of economics textbooks. Having taught for many years using Mankiw’s principles text, and then more recently writing my own (with Steve Rubb), I was naturally interested in taking a look.

While there is lots of good stuff, my favorite part discusses why the classical long run model should be taught before the short run (Keynesian) model. It’s too long to quote in full, but here are some highlights:

First, notwithstanding Keynes’s famous quip about asymptotic mortality, long-run issues are extraordinarily important for human welfare. Consider: In 1900, Japan had less than half the income per person of Argentina. Now Japan has more than twice the income of Argentina. . . . Second, classical macroeconomics is more closely linked to the lessons of microeconomics. After students have learned about how the forces of supply and demand govern market economies, they are ready to apply these tools to the questions of macroeconomics. . . . Third, the theory of short-run fluctuations is more easily understood after a solid grounding in the economy’s long-run equilibrium. According to standard theories, the business cycle represents a transitory deviation of the economy from its trend growth path. . . . Fourth, short-run fluctuations are more complex than long-run growth. This follows simply from the classical dichotomy—the theoretical tenet that nominal variables (such as the money supply and the price level) do not influence real variables (such as real GDP and unemployment). . . . Fifth, the macroeconomic theory of the short run is more open to debate than the macroeconomic theory of the long run. Although I believe that the traditional model of aggregate supply and aggregate demand remains the best framework for understanding the business cycle, not all economists concur.

I really like that summary.

I just finished writing a long paper on currency manipulation, although I assume I’ll have to spend time revising it after comments.  My next two projects are papers on “never reason from a price change” (NRFPC) and NeoFisherism vs. New Keynesianism.  Because I first need to find someone good at mathematical econ to help me with the second paper, my next project is NRFPC.

Previously I’ve argued that the Great Recession was caused by two types of reasoning from a price change.  One is the Phillips Curve, which sees high inflation (as in mid-2008) as a signal of economic overheating.  The second mistake was assuming that sharply falling interest rates (as in 2007-08) represent an easing of monetary policy.

At first glance these seem like very different mistakes.  But in each case the right approach was to look at NGDP.  And when you start to think about it, it becomes apparent that the economics profession missed a golden opportunity when they decided that NGDP would not become the central organizing principle in the education of our macro students.  Regardless of the question, the answer is often “NGDP”. Just think about the following:

1.  If we had taught the Phillips Curve model with NGDP growth (or more precisely the level relative to trend) rather than inflation, the model would have done far better after 1970.

2.  If we had used expected NGDP growth as a measure of the stance of monetary policy, then lots of the confusion would have been removed.  Why were rates so high in 1980?  High interest rates suggested tight money. Rapid NGDP growth suggested easy money.

3.  NGDP growth provides a near perfect way of talking about financial crises, which are generally correlated strongly with NGDP growth, but not as strongly with inflation.  And that can be explained by the fact that financial contracts are not indexed to either inflation or RGDP.  Or they can be explained by the fact that nominal income is the resource available to repay nominal debt.

4.  NGDP growth is a good way to think about labor market instability, given that wage contracts are generally in nominal terms.  Students can understand the musical chairs model.  Try explaining to students that low inflation hurts workers.  And we would have gotten far better results talking about nominal wages deflated by NGDP rather than deflated by the price level.

5.  Lender/borrower redistribution can be more easily explained with the idea that unexpected NGDP growth favors borrowers and an unexpected decline in NGDP favors lenders.

6.  The Fisher effect could have been taught with expected NGDP growth rather than expected inflation, as faster RGDP growth also tends to boost nominal interest rates.

7.  The aggregate demand curve could have simply been set equal to a given level of NGDP (i.e. a hyperbola, or unit elastic). This makes it super easy to explain its downward slope.  Instead our textbooks (including mine) have three explanations, which not one student in a thousand will understand.

8.  The classical dichotomy is super easy to explain with NGDP.  Nominal (monetary) factors determine NGDP, and real factors determine the P&Y split in NGDP growth.

NGDP is the proper way of thinking about the stance of monetary policy. It’s the right way to think about aggregate demand.  It’s the right way to think about nominal shocks.  It’s the right way to think about the welfare cost of inflation.  It’s the right target of monetary policy.  It’s the right way to think about recessions.  It’s the right way to think about financial crises. It’s the right way to think about the Phillips Curve.

Instead, we use a hodgepodge of different variables (interest rates, inflation, aggregate demand, real GDP, unemployment, etc.) most of which are not even the right variable for the thing we are trying to explain.  Normally you add complexity to make things more accurate.  We’ve added complexity and ended up making the model far less accurate.  That’s just appalling!

Macro should be the study of two things:

1.  The causes and consequences of long run economic growth, and its components like saving and investment.

2.  The causes and consequences of shocks to NGDP.

Plus a bit of international macro.

PS. Pat Horan and I have a new piece on MMT.

PPS.  Which correlates better with the business cycle?

EFE

NJ firm advancing drug for pancreatic, hard-to-treat cancers      Cache   Translate Page

Earlier this year a Newark, N.J.–based holding company led by longtime telecom entrepreneur Howard Jonas upped its investment in a pharmaceutical company developing drugs to treat rare and hard-to-treat forms of cancer, taking a majority stake.

Rafael Holdings' investment in Rafael Pharmaceuticals—named for the biblical angel of healing—increased to $66.7 million. And the Cranbury-based pharma company is keeping busy with a pair of Phase 3 trials of its lead drug candidate for the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia and for metastatic pancreatic cancer.

Pancreatic cancer diagnoses are among the most grim because the disease often goes undetected until a progressed stage. Last week Jeopardy host Alex Trebek revealed he has the disease.

Rafael Pharma's lead drug candidate—CPI-613—is designed to block certain enzymes that serve as an important source of energy production needed for cancer cell growth. The field of so-called cancer metabolism has garnered renewed interest in recent years in part due to technological advances.

"Our focus is orphan diseases," said Sanjeev Luther, president and CEO of Rafael Pharma, referring to conditions that affect relatively small populations of patients.

The company is expecting interim results of its Phase 3 studies—which look at progression and survival rates, among other measures—in the second quarter of next year.

"Pancreatic cancer is the deadliest cancer worldwide, with very limited treatment options. The current data on CPI-613 in combination with [chemotherapy] in patients battling pancreatic cancer is immensely promising," said the pancreatic cancer study's principal investigator, Dr. Philip Philip of the Karmanos Cancer Institute at Wayne State University, in a statement.

Rafael Pharma's team of about 25 people is based in Cranbury and Newark and at Stony Brook University on Long Island, where its lead drug candidate was discovered.

The company is also advancing candidates for the treatment of other rare and hard-to-treat cancers—including Burkitt's lymphoma and metastatic colorectal cancer—in earlier-stage clinical trials. And it has a number of preclinical molecules.

"We continue to invest in Rafael Pharma to support the promising clinical development of its lead drug," said Jonas in a statement issued earlier this year. "As the two companies further align, we strengthen our capacity to leverage their complementary attributes for mutual benefit."

Jonas has founded companies such as IDT Corp. and Straight Path Communications, the latter of which was acquired by Verizon for $3.1 billion last year.

Luther said Rafael Pharma will soon decide whether it would commercialize drugs itself, partner with other firms or sublicense its product if it receives FDA approval.—Jennifer Henderson

911 call in Bronxville raises hospital security issues

An inaccurate report of a gunman at New York–Presbyterian/Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville on Sunday night sent hundreds of police to the campus before authorities determined there was no threat.

Bronxville Police Chief Christopher Satriale told reporters that the department received a call around 9 p.m. from a nurse supervisor, who said two patients had seen a man carrying a shotgun on the sixth floor.

Police ultimately determined the threat was unfounded after reviewing several hours of hospital surveillance footage.

The incident once again raised the issue of emergency response at hospitals in the case of an active shooter, with some health systems increasing the use of armed security to protect facilities. In August a man shot and killed his wife and himself at Westchester Medical Center. In 2017 a physician who had been fired from Bronx-Lebanon Hospital killed one person and himself and wounded six others.

In a statement, a hospital spokeswoman thanked staff and law enforcement and said operations continued as normal Monday.

The event underscored the importance of hospitals working closely with local law enforcement, said Jenna Mandel-Ricci, vice president of regulatory and professional affairs at the Greater New York Hospital Association, who specializes in emergency preparedness. The association advises its hospitals to keep "first-responder access kits" handy so that the first officers reporting to a scene can quickly get blueprints and keys that will make it easier to navigate the hospital.

"Even false alarms are incredibly helpful to push our planning forward," she said. —Jonathan LaMantia

Transition to value-based payment missing focus on children's health: report

A focus on improving children's health is missing from the continued transition to value-based payments for providers according to a new report from the United Hospital Fund.

While tying payments for children's health care to quality rather than quantity has the potential to have a "profoundly positive impact," the complex nature of payment reform is challenging and requires extremely close collaboration between children's organizations and Medicaid agencies, the fund said Monday.

Children make up more than half of enrollees in Medicaid and its associated Children's Health Insurance Program.

"It's not just Medicaid that stands to gain, however," said Chad Shearer, the fund's vice president for policy and director of its Medicaid Institute, in a statement. "Research has shown the importance of a child's first years to their life-long health. Reforming the payment system in a way that will improve maternal and child health can reduce special education needs, child neglect and mistreatment, problem behaviors and adult illnesses."

The report recommended providers and social services organizations work with states' Medicaid programs work together to identify measures that could be incorporated in value-based contracts to improve care for children —J.H.

High prices, high demand for metro-area health care

A new from the Health Care Cost Institute shows that metropolitan areas across the U.S. with higher health care prices tend to have lower usage of services. But the New York metro area bucks that trend with both higher prices and utilization.

Prices in this area were 22% higher than the national median, while utilization of health care was 26% higher between 2012 and 2016. The report didn't explore what is driving these trends, but future research using its database will look at price variation within a region, wasteful spending and provider competition, the institute said.

New York also ranked second in the increase of prices during the five-year period, at 22%, which behind only Tampa.

"Now that we see New York has high prices, we can compare it to other high-price areas and see what the differences are and what might be driving cost growth in a specific region," said Bill Johnson, a co-author of the report and a senior researcher at the Health Care Cost Institute.

The report also showed that use of outpatient care, such as ambulatory surgery, was 5% lower in the New York area than the national median. The metro area includes New York City, Long Island and the Hudson Valley as well as parts of New Jersey, western Connecticut and eastern Pennsylvania.

The tool, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, uses claims data from Medicare and commercial insurers Aetna, Humana, Kaiser Permanente and UnitedHealthcare. —J.L.

Prediksi Bayern Munchen Vs Liverpool: Tuan Rumah Meyakinkan      Cache   Translate Page

Bayern menang 1-0 menjamu Hertha Berlin lewat gol tunggal Javi Martinez, kemudian menghabisi tuan rumah Borussia Monchengladbach 5-1 melalui gol-gol Martinez, Thomas Muller, Serge Gnabry dan Robert Lewandowski (2). Terakhir, pasukan Niko Kovac membantai Wolfsburg 6-0 di Allianz Arena lewat gol-gol Gnabry, James Rodriguez, Muller, Joshua Kimmich dan Lewandowski (2).

3. Bayern Munchen - Bintang 5 (Attack 90 – Midfield 85 – Defence 85), Pemain terbaik (Robert Lewandowski (OVR 90), Manuel Neuer (OVR 90), Mats Hummels (OVR 89)) (AFP/Guenter Schiffmann)#source%3Dgooglier%2Ecom#https%3A%2F%2Fgooglier%2Ecom%2Fpage%2F%2F10000

Lewandowski On-fire

Robert Lewandowski (AFP)#source%3Dgooglier%2Ecom#https%3A%2F%2Fgooglier%2Ecom%2Fpage%2F%2F10000

Komposisi Pemain

Prakiraan Susunan Pemain:

Bayern Munchen (4-2-3-1): Neuer; Alaba, Hummels, Sule, Rafinha; Javi Martinez, Thiago Alcantara; Ribery, James Rodriguez, Gnabry; Lewandowski.

Pelatih: Niko Kovac

Liverpool (4-3-3): Alisson; Robertson, van Dijk, Matip, Alexander-Arnold; Henderson, Fabinho, Wijnaldum; Mane, Firmino, Salah

Pelatih: Jurgen Klopp

Must haves:

Seating for 7. That third row is a must for us, I only have 2 kids but I drive 5 kids to school every day.

AWD. We live in the Portland area and we're up on Mt. Hood most weekends in the winter, otherwise I'd consider a minivan.

Around 40K, give or take say 5K.

My Toyota Sienna has all those, including AWD but costs less than 40k, has a smoother ride and more storage capacity.

I didn't know they had minivans with AWD!

They do! I was going to suggest a Honda Odyssey or Toyota Sienna. It meets all your specs, costs less, has a smoother ride, and has more storage capacity.

Clipper Race Celebrates International Women’s Day       Cache   Translate Page
Toni Wilson after winning the race to Qingdao onboard Visit Seattle.

Over the past 23 years and eleven editions of the Clipper Race, thousands of women from all over the world have been introduced to sailing and trained to be ocean racers. And the upcoming 2019-20 edition of the race will be no different, with almost 200 women, including 21 round the world crew, currently signed up to take on the ultimate ocean adventure.

With sport a proven catalyst for growth and empowerment, the nurses, doctors, teachers, and business owners who join the race come back different people. One whose life was changed by the Clipper Race was Toni Wilson, a retired business woman from London who did all but one leg of the circumnavigation onboard Visit Seattle in the 2017-18 edition. After crossing six oceans, facing phenomenal sea states with hurricane winds and 14 metre waves, and living in close quarters with people of all ages and walks of life, she says: “Life is about stepping stones so the Clipper Race experience has been a big stepping stone for a non-sailor like me to actually build a lot of confidence in an absolutely new way.

“I was actually quite frightened going to sea for the first time but having actually done it is a confidence booster. I think it causes a lot of people to evaluate where they are in life. Some people take the lessons they’ve learnt on the race and implement that into the life they had before. And then other people, like me, go off in a totally new direction. I definitely felt like a different person after I returned home after a year at sea.”

IMAGE: Toni with Visit Seattle teammates Chrissie Laming and Lizzie Howe in the Whitsundays.

Toni’s team Visit Seattle was led by Nikki Henderson, the youngest Skipper in the history of the Clipper Race. Nikki was recently named the Yachting Journalists’ Association (YJA) Yachtsman of the Year, an honour previously bestowed upon some of the leading figures in sailing including Olympian Ben Ainslie and, closer to home, Clipper Race Founder and Chairman Sir Robin Knox-Johnston.

“Nikki’s results speak for themselves,” says Toni.

“It doesn’t matter whether she is female or male, old or young, she wouldn’t have been in the situation of skippering a boat around the world or have gained the respect or confidence of the crew if she wasn’t the right person for the job.”

IMAGE: Nikki Henderson and the Visit Seattle team celebrating first place in Qingdao.

Wendy Tuck was also a Skipper on the Clipper 2017-18 Race. She made history by becoming the first female skipper to win a round the world yacht race after her team Sanya Serenity Coast clinched the overall win. Toni says it was a privilege to work alongside the two women, saying: “It’s important to see other women in position of power or authority, it really does give you more confidence and ambition.

IMAGE: Clipper 2017-18 Race Skippers Nikki Henderson and Wendy Tuck.

“That was something that Nikki and Wendo [Wendy Tuck] did so well, they were really inspiring like that. It shows you that you can do it and have a can-do not can’t do attitude. We need those leaders and we haven’t got enough of them.”

IMAGE: Wendy Tuck at the helm of Sanya Serenity Coast.

Sir Robin agrees that there is still more to be done and is enthusiastic about the work that needs to be done to keep on attracting women to the race and sailing in general.

IMAGE: Clipper 2017-18 Race crew member Charlie Garrett at the helm of Dare to Lead.

He says: “I have had five female skippers and all have been excellent. And with every edition of the race I am more and more impressed with the calibre of female crew. Of course, it is always about ability and a willingness to learn, not gender, but it is important to recognise the women who take on the Clipper Race challenge who then inspire more to do the same.

IMAGE: Sanya Serenity Coast crew member Anne Neeson.

“We have some exceptional women signed up for the upcoming Clipper 2019-20 Race and I am looking forward to seeing their achievements as ocean racers.”

Govt gives Metgasco 'green light'      Cache   Translate Page

The licence renewals were announced on the same day the government revealed its long awaited strategic regional land use policy, which aims to find the balance between resources, farming and environmental interests.
Metgasco chief executive Peter Henderson was yesterday celebrating the licence renewals and an official production lease approval for the Casino power station, while disappointed by the new restrictions.

Comment on HOF Candidates: 50-46 by Rob       Cache   Translate Page
In 1981, the Red Sox traded Fred Lynn (about to turn 29) and Steve Renko for Joe Rudi, Jim Dorsey and Frank Tanana. As an Angels fan, this was an exciting trade. Joe Rudi was turning 34, and had just hit .237 the year before. He was basically done as a player. Tanana was still young, but after a tremendous start to his career, had arm troubles and saw his K/9 drop almost in half. And Jim Dorsey had a 9.00 ERA and basically was never a MLB level player. Renko was at the end of his career, but did have a little value left as a back of the rotation pitcher. But Fred Lynn! One of these guys is not like the other, right? The rest of the guys in the trade were either washed up, never a player or at least way off their peak years. Not Lynn. Now Lynn did have a down year, only playing 110 games the year before and hitting only 12 HRs. Still, he had hit .301 and had been an all star before getting injured. Great trade right? He promptly went out and hit .219 with 5 HRs in 76 games. What a disappointment! For the Red Sox to make this trade, they had to have known something. Now, Lynn was better the next year. He hit .299/.374/.517 with 21 HRs at age 30, in 138 games. But he was mostly hurt the next year again, although he played well when healthy. Then had a pretty good season before signing with the Orioles. I still remember, however, what a disappointment Lynn's performance was. The Angels made several high profile moves in the 80s and it really felt like they didn't work out that well. Gene Autry did a lot to try and win a championship, but it never worked. Almost.... but then Donnie Moore grooved a pitch to Dave Henderson (I, unfortunately was at that game) and allowed the Red Sox to turn a groundball to Bill Buckner into part of their losing story.

Posibles alineaciones:

Bayern Múnich: Neuer; Rafinha, Boateng, Hümmels, Alaba; Javi Martínez, Thiago, James Rodríguez; Gnabry, Ribery, Lewandowski.

Liverpool: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk, Matip, Robertson; Fabinho, Wijnaldum, Henderson; Salah, Mané, Firmino.

Climate shapes and shifts functional biodiversity in forests worldwide.

Abstract
Much ecological research aims to explain how climate impacts biodiversity and ecosystem-level processes through functional traits that link environment with individual performance. However, the specific climatic drivers of functional diversity across space and time remain unclear due largely to limitations in the availability of paired trait and climate data. We compile and analyze a global forest dataset using a method based on abundance-weighted trait moments to assess how climate influences the shapes of whole-community trait distributions. Our approach combines abundance-weighted metrics with diverse climate factors to produce a comprehensive catalog of trait-climate relationships that differ dramatically-27% of significant results change in sign and 71% disagree on sign, significance, or both-from traditional species-weighted methods. We find that (i) functional diversity generally declines with increasing latitude and elevation, (ii) temperature variability and vapor pressure are the strongest drivers of geographic shifts in functional composition and ecological strategies, and (iii) functional composition may currently be shifting over time due to rapid climate warming. Our analysis demonstrates that climate strongly governs functional diversity and provides essential information needed to predict how biodiversity and ecosystem function will respond to climate change.

Gareth Southgate tells Jordan Pickford what he must do to get through bad patch      Cache   Translate Page
England manager Gareth Southgate insists Jordan Pickford will benefit from coming under scrutiny of late. The Everton goalkeeper, who starred for the Three Lions in their run to the World Cup semi-finals last summer, has made some high-profile errors at times this season.Pickford endured a tough afternoon as the Toffees were beaten 3-2 at Newcastle last weekend – with a couple of mistakes compounded by a running exchange with a host of home fans at St James’ Park. The 25-year-old is likely to remain Southgate’s first-choice for the forthcoming Euro 2020 qualifying double-header against the Czech Republic and Montenegro after being included in the squad alongside Jack Butland and the returning Tom Heaton. The form of Burnley stopper Heaton will make Southgate’s decision harder but he welcomed the discussions as to who should be England’s number one.“We don’t have many English goalkeepers playing, all of those that are playing have had moments and spells of good form, making good saves and days when they have not been so good,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live and TalkSPORT.“Jordan has been our first choice for the recent period so it is probably the first time he has felt that spotlight a little bit more intensely.“That is good for his development. He is a young goalkeeper still who needs to respond in the right way to the comments and observations that have been made.“We are looking forward to working with him next week. In our environment he has worked well and had a consistent level of achievement.”Southampton pair Alex McCarthy and Angus Gunn will no doubt be taken into consideration for future squads if one of them can establish themselves as the undisputed first-choice at St Mary’s, while Dean Henderson – on loan at Sheffield United from Manchester United – was also mentioned by Southgate. But Pickford’s performances in an England shirt are enough to keep the manager happy with his contribution for now as he called on the former Sunderland man to keep pushing on.“Jordan has played extremely well for us,” he said.“I think you could look at any of the players across the squad and say they’ve had moments where they’ve played well and moments where they’ve had difficult afternoons. No question that was the case for Jordan at the weekend.“But if I look at what he’s done with us, and when you’re picking your squad there has to be an element of what they are doing with their club and an element of what they’re doing and have done with us – his performances with us have been excellent.“I’m never keen to say that ‘this player is the number one, and that’s it’, and ‘this player in that position is our number one choice’ because you’ve always got to have competition for places.“But, we’re pleased with what Jordan’s done and we’ve got to help him through what was hopefully a blip at the weekend. Like everybody else, he has to train well and perform well.”
