Mr. Burns is a weirdly good show at MCC Cache Translate Page
Mr. Burns, a post-electric play, an unusual show at McHenry County College’s Black Box Theatre through March 23, defies easy explanation.

In a nutshell, this off-Broadway dark comedy by Anne Washburn is rather weird, but you just might like it especially if you’re a fan of “The Simpsons” or of the idea of seeing three very different stories in one play.

Act I starts out with a small group of Americans who are among those who survived an apocalyptic event in which all U.S. nuclear power plants have been destroyed and the electric grid has collapsed. Gathered around a campfire in the present day, Matt (Jackson Nielsen), Jenny (Avery Harvey), Maria (Rachel Schneider), Sam (Charlie Sommers), and Colin (Derrick Wilson) are using their recollections of “The Simpsons” as a way to have a shared memory that can distract them from their real-life concerns, including “crazy rumors” about any ongoing danger.

The episode that is particularly memorable for this group is “Cape Feare,” the episode with a Sideshow-Bob-stalks-Bart-Simpson plot that parodies the Cape Fear thriller films (one starring Robert Mitchum, one with Robert De Niro). When this quintet is joined by Gibson (Joel Bennett), a wanderer who eventually says an ex-girlfriend was a big “Simpsons” fan and he’s a Gilbert & Sullivan society member, the group’s combined ability to recall the episode details increases exponentially.

Act II jumps ahead seven years to show how this group, now joined by another survivor, Quincy (Gianah Tomczak), has become a kind of theatre group, traveling to different cities to perform “Simpsons” episodes, TV commercials, and pop music medleys (e.g., “La Vida Loca,” “Fame,” “Eye of the Tiger,” and even the theme of “The Muppet Show”). Lines from “Simpsons” episodes have become a hot commodity, theatre groups buying the rights to use bits of dialogue from brokers and individuals.

Act III — 75 years later — is a mini-musical with rap, Gilbert & Sullivan, and other elements all coming together with other “Simpsons” characters (e.g., Edna [Spencer Alvarez]) and a revised “Cape Feare” plot. In this version, Springfield nuclear plant owner Mr. Burns (played with evil relish by Bennett) is now the villain of the piece, assisted by two “Simpsons” characters who used to hate each other, Itchy (Nielsen) and Scratchy (Sommers).

As these brief descriptions suggest, the three acts vary a lot in tone, each feeling like a different play. For instance, Act II is mostly humorous, with Bennett and Tomczak having a lot of fun as their characters (Gibson and Quincy) purposely overact in their rehearsal of a scene the theatre group is preparing. But when a character fears that his forgetting a decision the group made indicates he may have the onset of possible brain damage, and when violence occurs later, this comedy turns dark indeed. The main connector here — the power of storytelling as a civilization evolves — is a thought-provoking one.

Director Jay Geller and Musical Director Katie Meyers have ably shepherded the actors to some very good performances, even when they’re wearing brightly colored cartoon character masks and/or headpieces. (Sideshow Bob’s head and Marge Simpson’s towering blue hairstyle are especially memorable, thanks to costume designers Kathy Bruhnke and Kristi Geggie.)

I was also impressed by the increasingly more substantive set pieces by set designer Thomas Kesling and technical directors Susanne Powell and Kent Wilson.

Don’t bring the little ones to this play; despite the cartoon-based aspects, there’s a lot of adult subject matter (e.g., the safe distance from a nuclear plant that’s collapsed).

In summary, with a script this bizarre, very few theatre groups would tackle it. Kudos to Geller and MCC for taking a chance. It’s a show that sticks with you, so — despite my misgivings about the script — I’m giving this production of a post-nuclear-disaster play a “glowing” review.

Trip to AZ Cache Translate Page
On February 26th Bennett and I got to head down to AZ to visit my family, see Ethan in his school play and watch Ethan while my parents went on a trip. We were gone 10 days and though we missed Aaron tons, it was so nice to get away and take a break from life and enjoy the most perfect weather ever! The second night I was there I saw Ethan in his High School Musical, Hairspray! He did great!
I didn't get a whole lot of pictures taken of this trip but the ones I did sum up our trip pretty well.

Multiple times a day Bennett and I would go on walks in the wagon which Bennett loves and could spend every waking minute in it walking around outside. We went to the park down the street, went on the swings and walked around the neighborhood.
Everyday we ventured out somewhere and one day we went to the grounds of the new Gilbert Temple. (I was lucky enough to be in AZ during the time of the dedication and it was so beautiful! Can't wait to go inside! I also got to watch the Cultural Celebration which Ethan was in which was awesome as well as they preformed in the pouring rain!)
We then headed to the outdoor mall where we found puppies to look at.
And Bennett loved playing outside at the covered kids play area. He crawled and climbed up all of the toys they had there, chased birds and loved playing with the other kids.
And of course we visited the Disney store!
Just another stroll in the wagon before bed!
One of my last days there we went to the Zoo. We had a great time. We got Ethan out of school early, grabbed some lunch and headed to the Zoo. It was sure warm that day and Bennett really couldn't see any animals because they were sleeping or tucked behind cages and fences but we loved it anyways!
I promise his shorts go to his knees.......
And he loved the Petting Zoo.
And then we were done...
We also had a great time visiting the Butlers a couple times during our trip and seeing new baby Elisabeth! Bennett slept the whole time on the plane which was a miracle to say the least! So grateful! Overall it was a wonderful trip but it was sure great to come back home to Aaron!

Thousands attend visitation to honor fallen McHenry County Sheriff's deputy Cache Translate Page
Thousands of area residents and law enforcement officials from across the region paid their respects to McHenry County Sheriff’s Deputy Jacob Keltner during his visitation Tuesday afternoon.

A line of mourners stretched outside DeFiore Funeral Home, 10763 Dundee Road, in Huntley.

"It's been really sad and devastating," said family friend Laura Strong while on a bus leaving the visitation. "I think the community wants to honor someone who dedicated their life to serving the community. ... He was a nice guy. He loved and cared for [his wife] and the family."

McHenry County Circuit Court Chief Judge James Cowlin said he attended the visitation to show support from the judiciary.

"The judiciary respected him," Cowlin said. "This is a terrible tragedy for the family. A horrendous tragedy. What can you do other than express your sympathies and say your prayers. The rest is in God's hand."

Donna Rothgeb of Gilberts attended the visitation with her husband and teenage granddaughter.

"We were just talking about how this is becoming too often," she said, adding that she hopes people understand the risks law enforcement professionals take every day. "I can't help but be moved. I'm so blessed I still have my husband, my children, my grandkids."

Kane County Sheriff's Office spokesman Pat Gengler said the Illinois Chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) helped organize the visitation and funeral with help from the Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System.

He said hundreds of law enforcement officials from across the region have volunteered their time and resources to help the make the visitation and funeral run smoothly. He expects thousands of police officers, state troopers, sheriff's deputies and firefighters from "all over the place" to attend Wednesday's funeral.

"It's not surprising," he said. "This is what happens. This is what everybody does. ... It's not surprising to see this kind of support."

Gengler said Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker stopped by Tuesday evening to pay his respects.

Keltner, 35, of Crystal Lake, was shot and killed Thursday while trying to serve a warrant to a known fugitive in Rockford. He was a McHenry County Sheriff’s deputy and a member of the U.S. Marshals Service Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force.

His wife, Becki Keltner, wrote a letter posted on the Illinois State Police Facebook page.

In the letter, Becki Keltner describes her husband as a “cop’s cop,” and said he loved his family.

“Jake is the love of my life,” she wrote. “We met at Western Illinois University in January 2004 and were inseparable. We married in 2007.”

She called for an end to hate.

"There are no words to sum up a man who meant so much for me and to so many others. My only wish is to have a world where we stop hating each other," she wrote. "Lift each other up. It's the only way to stop this unconscionable madness."

Gengler said the letter "breaks your heart."

A formal law enforcement walkthrough is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Carpentersville firefighter Matt Tracy said law enforcement officers, firefighters and emergency medical personnel are all "brothers."

"I wanted to come out today and pay our respects," said Tracy, who also serves as a member of the Associated Fire Fighters of Illinois Honor Guard. "You never want to lose anybody in law enforcement, fire, EMS at all. ... We're going to keep doing what we do every day and hope that this doesn't happen and when it does be there to respect those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for what they do."

The sheriff's department said on Tuesday that donations to the Keltner family can be dropped off at or sent to the McHenry County Sheriff's Office, 2200 N. Seminary Ave., Woodstock, 60098, or at DeFiore Funeral Home, 10763 Dundee Road, Huntley, 60142. Checks should be made out to Becki Keltner.

The funeral

The funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Woodstock North High School, 3000 Raffel Road. Woodstock North will be closed for the service.

Parking at the high school Wednesday will be for first responders only. Doors will open at 8 a.m., with law enforcement and other first responders receiving priority seating.

An official procession of law enforcement and emergency vehicles will follow the funeral. The public can line the route to support and honor Keltner. The procession is expected to leave Woodstock North High School about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday and arrive at DeFiore Funeral Home about 3 p.m.

Is America really the Land of the 'Free'? Cache Translate Page

The 4 images below demonstrate how ironic it is that America claims to be the land of the ‘free’, yet has the highest prison population in the world.

"I Miss My Friends and Family." Self Deprecate. Jason Parker, 29 Sept. 2013.
    Web. 12 Jan. 2015. <

This cartoon supports the ironic fact that America, the land of the ‘free’ has the highest prison population in the world by showing a family member/friend missing someone who has gone to prison, and a person replying that they will be together again soon. The accompanying frame includes his friends and family who have ‘joined’ him in prison implying that the American incarceration rate is on the rise. As of December 31st, 2013 there were 1.57 million inmates who sat behind bars in federal state, and county prisons. Per 100,000 people in America, 707 are incarcerated. Tone is used in this image by the illustrator to demonstrate the ridiculous increase of prisoners in America.

Arnold Abbott, head of the group Love Thy Neighbor, was back to handing out food
to the needy Wednesday, undeterred by his arrest for feeding the homeless
over the weekend. Washington Times. Jessica Chasmar, 6 Nov. 2014. Web. 12
    Jan. 2015.

This is an image of a 90 year named Arnold Abbott, a Florida man who was arrested for feeding the homeless. The new city’s (Florida) ordinance forbids people to feed the homeless in public. It is ironic that America, the land of the ‘free’ incarcerates people for their actions caused by good intentions. These meaningless laws are contributing to why America has the most populated prisons in the world. This image reflects conflict because Arnold needs to decide between continuing to feed the homeless or facing possible jail time.

Kwame Ajamu, right, formerly known as Ronnie Bridgeman, is comforted by attorney
Terry Gilbert on Tuesday. Washington Post. Elahe Izadi, 9 Dec. 2014. Web.
    12 Jan. 2015.

This is an image of Kwame Ajamu, a 57 year old man who at 17 years old was convicted of murder in the killing of a Cleveland salesman. On Tuesday December 8th, Ohio man Kwame wept after a judge cleared all charges against him at age 57. This demonstrates complication because an innocent man had spent 27 years of his life in prison for a murder he did not commit while the person who did commit the crime was running free. Further proving that America is not necessarily a land of the ‘free’ if someone has to spend a great portion of their life in prison for something they did not commit.

"1 More Strike Zone." Incarcerated Voices. Jaime Stankowitz, n.d. Web. 12 Jan.

This cartoon image demonstrates the 3 strike law which is currently found in 28 states. The 3 strike law increases the prison sentences of someone who has previously been convicted of two or more felonies. A person with 2 previous, less spiteful charges, such as stealing a bike and littering can go to jail for 25 years to life if they are convicted of a third felony, no matter how severe. This clashes against the perception America has as being known as the land of the ‘free’ and contributes to the increasing prison population. Irony is demonstrated throughout this law and image because the punishment doesn’t fit the crime. Someone who has committed these lesser felonies should be sentenced to probation and rehabilitation not added to the already overpopulated prison system that America has created by enforcing these absurd laws.

The Angevin Empire at its height
Map created by the author
The twelfth century was a tumultuous time for the young Kingdom of England. Fifty two years before 1118, the year of Thomas' birth, the Saxon dynasty had been overthrown forever, replaced with the iron rule of the Normans. The lives of many, on both sides of the Channel, were changed forever. Around this time, Gilbert Becket decided to move his family from the village of Thierville in Normandy to London, there to seek a new life in the new Norman domain. By the time his son Thomas was born, he was a wealthy and respected London merchant and landowner. Young Thomas spent many a summer on the Sussex estates of the family friend Richer de L'Aigle, whiling away the sunny days hunting and hawking, fine pursuits of a young man. Schooled at Merton Priory and later Grammar School in London, young Thomas received a fine education for the day, thanks to his father's success in business. But dark times were coming. The peaceful days of King Henry I were soon overthrown in a ruinous civil war. After the tragic shipwreck which claimed the life of Prince William Adelin, the broken hearted Henry was left with only his daughter, Matilda, as his hope for an heir. Long did the King try to persuade the English barons to accept her, the first woman to reign in her own right in the history of England. Matilda, whose husband the Holy Roman Emperor Henry V had died not long before, was soon wed to Geoffrey of Anjou, so that Henry I might gain an alliance with the mighty County of Anjou in France. To the relief of the King, the couple produced a male heir, Henry. But when the King died in 1135, the ever suspicious Norman lords refused to acknowledge Matilda, throwing in their lot for Stephen, the Count of Blois, triggering a near twenty year devastating civil war in England between the forces loyal to Matilda, and those loyal to Stephen, in a period infamously known to history as The Anarchy. The war laid waste to vast swathes of Albion, and it was in this destruction that Gilbert Becket once prosperous trade crumbled. Young Thomas took up a job as a clerk to help the family, and soon ended up in the employ of Theobald of Bec, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the most powerful avatar of Christendom in the realm.

King Henry II of England
Image taken from the Manuscipt of the
Historia Anglorum of Matthew Parris
Escaping the turmoil that England had been hurled into, young Thomas marched forth as an emissary of Canterbury to Rome, spending many years in Europe learning the intricacies of many laws of the Church. After what seemed an age without end, there seemed to be hope at last for the dystopic British Isles. In December 1154, after a generation of endless war, the Norman dynasty lay in flames, when Henry the son of Empress Matilda landed on the southern coast of England. On the 19th of December, he was crowned King Henry II of England, Duke of Normandy, Count of Anjou, Duke of Aquitaine and Lord of Ireland, alongside his new Queen, Eleanor of Aquitaine. The House of Normandy was over. The House of Plantagenet, a dynasty that would rule England longer than any other, even to this day, had begun. By conquest and by marriage, King Henry now ruled one of the mightiest realms in Europe, a vast state known as the Angevin Empire. In those bygone days, the kings of England ruled more of France than the King of France did. The lawlessness of the Anarchy was over, and once again the people of England enjoyed peace. With order restored, young Thomas returned triumphantly to the British Isles, and was granted the honour of Archdeacon of Canterbury, and offices in Lincoln Cathedral and St. Paul's Cathedral. The merchant's son was rising rapidly within the ranks of Feudal England...

Thomas Becket Enthroned
Nottingham Alabaster
With all the tenacity and determination that so characterised him, Becket hurled himself into his mission, impressing Archbishop Theobald with his whirlwind efficiency. Such was his drive, within a year the Archbishop recommended Becket directly to the King himself. Further up the rungs of the ladder of state did young Thomas go, when the King appointed him Lord Chancellor, arguably the most powerful minister of the kingdom, and custodian of the Great Seal of the Realm, a spectacular honour for one of such relatively humble birth. Fro seven years Thomas shone once more as comptroller of the King's finances, gaining the King's trust to such a degree that the heir to the throne the young Prince Henry was even sent to live in Becket's household. It was once remarked that the Prince once said that Becket became more a father to him than the King himself. When Theobald died in 1162, the mightiest Bishopric in England fell vacant, and to many there was no doubt as to whom should succeed. A deeply pious man at heart, Becket cast aside the Chancellorship and took the cloth on the 3rd of June, taking vows of asceticism, and pledging to champion the cause of Christendom in England. Storm clouds began to gather between the King and his new Archbishop, dismayed as Henry was that Becket had put the Church before State. It began with the rejection of the authority of secular courts over the clergy by Becket, which challenged the power of the state. Alarmed at this sudden thinking, King Henry conspired to turn the other Bishops against him. Yet rumours of treachery ran common, and in 1164, the King decreed, near four hundred years before Henry VIII, that England would not automatically bow to the wishes of the Pope of Rome (due to his fame, one often considers Henry VIII as the man who grappled with the Pope - the truth is that the Kings of England had wrestled with Rome for centuries by the time the Reformation took place). It took all of Henry's charisma and majesty with words to sway the gathered courts at Clarendon, but carry the day he did. Archbishop Becket however, refused to sign the heretical treaty. The board was set. Thomas Becket was ordered to present himself before the royal council on charges of contempt of royal authority. The Council, jealous of Becket's upstart power, convicted him, and the Archbishop was banished from the realm.

Evading the King's men, Becket fled to France where he was given sanctuary by King Louis VII in the monastery of Pontigny. For near two years he resisted in exile, excommunicating his foes in the English Church, for no precedent existed for removing the Archbishop of Canterbury from power. Meanwhile, King Henry seethed. The looming eyes of Pope Alexander III were ever watchful, but when Becket threatened the King of England himself with excommunication (a fate worse than death in the medieval world), the King's frustration turned to anger. When the Pope agreed a truce, Becket returned to England, immune to earthly shackles, and continued to excommunicate all in his path. When he heard that Prince Henry had been crowned in his absence, an act only the Archbishop of Canterbury could perform, he excommunicated the Archbishop of York.

King Henry was in Normandy when the news reached him. As news of rifts in his vast empire fell upon his ears, a cry of rage shook the hall, with words that to this day have been in dispute:

" What miserable fools and traitors hath I nourished and
raised in my household, who grant their Lord be so trifled
by so low born a cleric! "
                           - KING HENRY II ON BECKET

Some say his fury was stronger still, and that the King roared in frustration:

" Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?! "
                          - KING HENRY II's LETHAL WISH

The Murder of Thomas Becket
English Psalter of 1250,
currently in the Walters Art Gallery,
Legendary was the wrath of the Plantagenet Kings, and all who looked on feared what irrational deeds anger would inspire in the King. Standing there that day were four knights, Hugh de Morville, William de Tracy, Richard le Breton and Reginald FitzUrse, all eager to serve and please their King. Mistaking the King's fiery words for royal command, the four rode forth from court to carry out their terrible deed. On sunset of the fifth day of Christmas 1170, the four knights arrived in Canterbury town, their eyes set on the towering cathedral. As evening fell on Canterbury, the clergy and the Archbishop were celebrating the Vespers service. A certain Subdeacon of the cathedral beckoned the knights in, a name since blackened in history. The monks loyal to the Archbishop moved to bar the doors, but their hand was stayed by Becket. "'Tis not proper", spake he, "that a house of prayer,a church of Christ, be made a fortress". Seizing their chance, the knights burst in in full armour, sharpened swords gleaming in the failing light. "Where is Thomas Becket, traitor of the King and Kingdom", one demanded to the congregation. Silence reigned. "Where is the Archbishop!" they cried aloud. At this Becket rose to his feet and faced his foe. "The righteous will be like a bold lion and free from fear", said he. Into the evenlight he moved, "Here I am, not a traitor of the King but a priest; why do you seek me?". At the altar Archbishop Becket stopped, and turned to face the image of the holy confessor St. Benedict. The four men of steel bore down upon him, "Absolve and restore to communion those thou hast excommunicated, and reconcile those who hath been banished", the knights commanded. "No penance hath been made, so I shall not absolve them", the Archbishop coolly replied. "Then you", spake they, "will now die and will suffer what thou hast earned". "And I", said he, "am prepared to die for my Lord, so that in my blood the Church will attain liberty and peace; but in the name of Almighty God I forbid that thou striketh my men, cleric or layman should he be".

"With rapid motion they laid sacrilegious hands on him", and moved to drag him from the sanctum, for to strike down a man of the cloth was sin enough, but to do so on hallowed ground was the devil's work indeed. But Archbishop Becket was loath to release his grip upon the stone pillar. Seeing Reginald coming near, Archbishop Becket spoke his last command. "Touch me not, Reginald, you who oweth me faith and obedience, you who foolishly follow these men". A burning rage did this spark in the knight, who rounded on Becket, "I owe thee neither faith nor obedience when faced with fealty I owe my King". Seeing Doom coming now, Thomas Becket lowered in prayer when Reginald's blade sang through the air. With one mighty blow, as the heavenly crown was laid on the Archbishop's head, his earthly one was hewn by steel. A second blow met its mark, but not yet over was it. On the third strike he sank to his knees, "for the name of Jesus I am ready to embrace death", said he. So forceful was the knight's blow, the blade of the sword was shattered upon the cold stone below. An accomplice in the Church, loyal to the King, spoke the last. "We can leave this place, knights, he will rise no more".

The Becket Casket
Reliquary made c. 1180-1190,
Currently in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London
Soon after news of the impious deed spread like wildfire through Europe, and with it admiration for the pious Becket. Crowds across the continent chanted his name and called him martyr. two years later, Pope Alexander III declared him a saint. The four assassins fled north to Knaresborough Castle, and holed up for a year. All four were excommunicated by the Pope, yet journeyed to Rome, braving threats of lynching, to plead before the Vicar of Christ. Pope Alexander was merciful, and decreed that each man serve penance for fourteen years in the Holy Lands. To Outremer were they henceforth banished. But it was King Henry who was racked with grief and guilt at the horrible deed. Never truly meaning his death, after all, they had once been friends, the King fell into a desperate sorrow, and a fear for his immortal soul. On the 12th July, 1174, the King performed an unprecedented humility. By the Church of St. Dunstans, the King of England set out barefoot and clad in sackcloth, and undertook his pilgrimage to Canterbury Cathedral, whipped along the road to redemption. The monks, afraid of relic thieves, buried Becket beneath the floor in the East of the Cathedral. Fifty years later, King Henry III, grandson of Henry II, gave them a lavish new setting in pride of place within the Cathedral. There they regally sat until they were destroyed by order of King Henry VIII in 1538. The most intact relic survives today in the so called Becket Casket. Canterbury has ever since been a great pilgrimage site in Christendom, with images of the Saint all over the Christian World. Quite a legacy for the boy from Cheapside...

Comment on Varidesk Pro Plus 36 Review Roundup by Peter Gilbert Cache Translate Page
Tyler, I'm so happy you called out your height in your review.we speak with so many people on booth spectrum's of the height chart that has had issues with desk-on-desk risers like the Varidesk. The standard is called HFES 100-2007 this makes sure the office furniture works ergonomically for users from 5' tall to 6'5" tall. The ideal typing posture is L-shape with your keyboard lined up at elbow height and your eyes should be at the top 2-3 inches of the monitor. To really be able to meet this guideline you need to have a solution where the keyboard can travel up to 7" below a standard 29" tall table and up to 49" in the standing position. There are only two that truly can do this and that's the S2S Comfort Plus and the S2S Sit Stand Workstation. You should check these two out and maybe do a review?

James Last, született Hans Last, becenevén ? Hansi? (Bréma, 1929. április 17. - Palm Beach, Florida, 2015. június 9. ) német zeneszerző és nagyzenekar vezető.
Hans Last apja tisztviselő volt Bréma város közmunkákkal foglalkozó osztályánál. A fiú Bréma Sebaldsbrück nevű külvárosában nőtt föl. Tizenkét éves korától tanult zongorázni, majd tizenévesként átváltott nagybőgőre. A második világháborúban szülővárosában súlyos bombázásokat élt át, a támadások alatt Last üzeneteket hordott a légvédelmi parancsnokságra. Tizennégy évesen, 1943-ban lépett be a Wehrmacht katonai zeneiskolájába, Frankfurt am Main-ban. Ennek épületét azonban rövidesen bombatámadás pusztította el, Lastot és társait áthelyezték a bückeburgi katonai zeneiskolába. [1]
A háború után, 1946-ban csatlakozott Hans-Gunther Österreich Radio Bremeni Tanzorchester zenekarához. 1948-ban vezetője lett a Last-Becker-Ensemble jazz-zenekarnak, amelyben hét éven át közreműködött. Miután a Last-Becker együttes feloszlott, Last a Polydor Records lemezkiadó cég, valamint számos európai rádióállomás szervezője lett. A következő évtizedben, olyan művészeknek segített sikereikben, mint Helmut Zacharias, Freddy Quinn, Lolita (Ditta Zusa Einzinger), Alfred Hause és Caterina Valente.
James Last néven kiadott első albuma az USA-ban a The American Patrol a Warner Brothers gondozásában 1964 körül. Kiadott egy kilenc albumos sorozatot Classics Up to Date 1-9 címmel, majd 1965-ben a Non-Stop Dancing-et, ezután a következő negyven évben 190 albummal jelentkezett. Elnyert számos népszerűségi és szakmai díjat is, beleértve a Billboard magazine Star of the Year díját 1976-ban, és a német Echo-díj életműdíját 1994-ben.

How Many Pilgrims Came to America on Mayflower? Cache Translate Page
The Thanksgiving Holidays are coming soon, and thoughts of the Americans are coming back through the Ages to the historical background. We all know that the Pilgrims came to this country on the ship, and this ship is Mayflower. Well, the question is if all the passengers on this historical voyage were Pilgrims, and how many of them were coming to step on the unknown continent. I did not know the answer. Do you?

In September 1620, a merchant ship called the Mayflower set sail from Plymouth, a port on the southern coast of England. Typically, the Mayflower’s cargo was wine and dry goods, but on this trip the ship carried passengers: 102 of them, all hoping to start a new life on the other side of the Atlantic. Nearly 40 of these passengers were Protestant Separatists–they called themselves “Saints”–who hoped to establish a new church in the New World. Today, we often refer to the colonists who crossed the Atlantic on the Mayflower as “Pilgrims.”

Pilgrims Before the Mayflower

In 1608, a congregation of disgruntled English Protestants from the village of Scrooby, Nottinghamshire, left England and moved to Leyden, a town in Holland. These “Separatists” did not want to pledge allegiance to the Church of England, which they believed was nearly as corrupt and idolatrous as the Catholic Church it had replaced, any longer. (They were not the same as the Puritans, who had many of the same objections to the English church but wanted to reform it from within.) The Separatists hoped that in Holland, they would be free to worship as they liked.

In fact, the Separatists (they called themselves “Saints”) did find religious freedom in Holland, but they also found a secular life that was more difficult to navigate than they’d anticipated. For one thing, Dutch craft guilds excluded the migrants, so they were relegated to menial, low-paying jobs. Even worse was Holland’s easygoing, cosmopolitan atmosphere, which proved alarmingly seductive to some of the Saints’ children. (These young people were “drawn away,” Separatist leader William Bradford wrote, “by evill [sic] example into extravagance and dangerous courses.”) For the strict, devout Separatists, this was the last straw. They decided to move again, this time to a place without government interference or worldly distraction: the “New World” across the Atlantic Ocean.

The Mayflower

First, the Separatists returned to London to get organized. A prominent merchant agreed to advance the money for their journey. The Virginia Company gave them permission to establish a settlement, or “plantation,” on the East Coast between 38 and 41 degrees’ north latitude (roughly between the Chesapeake Bay and the mouth of the Hudson River). And the King of England gave them permission to leave the Church of England, “provided they carried themselves peaceably.”

In August 1620, a group of about 40 Saints joined a much larger group of (comparatively) secular colonists– “Strangers,” to the Saints–and set sail from England on two merchant ships: The Mayflower and the Speedwell. The Speedwell began to leak almost immediately, however, and the ships headed back to port. The travelers squeezed themselves and their belongings onto the Mayflower and set sail once again.

Because of the delay caused by the leaky Speedwell, the Mayflower had to cross the Atlantic at the height of storm season. As a result, the journey was horribly unpleasant. Many of the passengers were so seasick they could scarcely get up, and the waves were so rough that one “Stranger” was swept overboard and drowned.

The Mayflower Compact

After two miserable months at sea, the ship finally reached the New World. There, the Mayflower’s passengers found an abandoned Indian village and not much else. They also found that they were in the wrong place: Cape Cod was located at 42 degrees’ north latitude, well north of the Virginia Company’s territory. Technically, the Mayflower colonists had no right to be there at all. In order to establish themselves as a legitimate colony (“Plymouth,” named after the English port from which they had departed) under these dubious circumstances, 41 of the Saints and Strangers drafted and signed a document they called the Mayflower Compact. This Compact promised to create a “civil Body Politick” governed by elected officials and “just and equal laws.” It also swore allegiance to the English king.

Plymouth Colony and The First Thanksgiving

The colonists spent the first winter, which only 53 passengers and half the crew survived, living onboard the Mayflower. (The Mayflower sailed back to England in April 1621.) Once they moved ashore, the colonists faced even more challenges. During their first winter in America, more than half of the Plymouth colonists died from malnutrition, disease and exposure to the harsh New England weather. In fact, without the help of the area’s native people, it is likely that none of the colonists would have survived. An English-speaking Pawtuxet named Samoset helped the colonists form an alliance with the local Wampanoags, who taught them how to hunt local animals, gather shellfish and grow corn, beans and squash. At the end of the next summer, the Plymouth colonists celebrated their first successful harvest with a three-day festival of thanksgiving.

Eventually, the Plymouth colonists were absorbed into the Puritan Massachusetts Bay Colony. Still, the Mayflower Saints and their descendants remained convinced that they alone had been specially chosen by God to act as a beacon for Christians around the world. “As one small candle may light a thousand,” Bradford wrote, “so the light here kindled hath shone to many, yea in some sort to our whole nation.”

Who Came with Mayflower?

Detailed below is a list of the passengers on board the Mayflower during its trans-Atlantic voyage of September 6 - November 9, 1620, the majority of them becoming the settlers of Plymouth Colony in what is now Massachusetts. Of the passengers, 37 were members of the separatist Leiden congregation seeking freedom of worship in the New World.

The Mayflower launched with 102 passengers, as well as at least two dogs. One baby was born during the trip and named Oceanus Hopkins. Another, Peregrine (meaning "wanderer") White, was born on the Mayflower in America on November 20, before the settlement at Plymouth. About half of these emigrants List of Mayflower passengers who died in the winter of 1620 - 1621|died in the first winter. Many Americans can trace their ancestry back to one or more of these individuals who, 'Saints' and 'Strangers' together, would become known as the Pilgrim Fathers|Pilgrims.

(Webb). 'Nitro Zeus'. This is a kind of asymmetrical warfare technique, the type of thing which has not been used as there has been an understanding that once the genie is out of the bottle, and that kind of brutality against civilians - and note the influence on Assholia of the primitive thinking of the Khazars - is unleashed, some hacker in, say, China, could give the Assholians a dose of their own medicine (the more sophisticated the country, the greater the damage, hence the asymmetry, and the realization that starting down this path is dangerous for countries like Assholia). I'm certain that one day the Assholians will be repaid, in full, for the complete lack of morality in psychos like Bolton, Abrams, and Lil Marco.

"Failed Crypsis and Its Discontents: Past and Present" (Joyce)!!! (read the whole thing):
"The recent deluge in material attempting to explain “myths” about Jewish communism and Jewish capitalism (Freedland has also written about the “mythology of the ‘Israel Lobby’) should be seen as part of the Jewish effort to evade description as an elite and maintain crypsis — despite incontrovertible evidence that Jews constituted an elite within Bolshevism, have always constituted an elite within European finance capitalism, and that the contemporary Israel Lobby is one of the most well-funded and influential players in Western politics. Moreover, it is nothing short of miraculous that it should have taken this long for the cracks to begin to appear in the mask of Jews on the Left.
Even just taking the issue of money, the picture is staggering. Britain’s most notorious businessman is, after all, the Jewish Philip Green. Jews utterly dominate the contemporary exploitative payday loan industry. Israel is the global capital of the online gambling industry, but prohibits its own citizens from falling prey to it. And the 2008 financial crisis was largely precipitated by sub-prime mortgage lenders, the most predatory of which were Quicken Loans and Ameriquest, owned and operated by the Jews Daniel Gilbert, Gary Gilbert, Ron Berman, Lindsay Gross, and Roland Arnall. It was Arnall, whose companies were ultimately responsible for almost $75 billion in bad sub-prime loans, who originated the “stated income loan,” often called “liar loans,” because they were loans given without verification of income — a massive factor in causing the global crash.
Jonathan Freedland worries that growing populism on the Left “tends to present the very real failings of modern capitalism not as a matter of anything systemic, but as the work of a small group of people who are ruining things for the rest.” He should be worried."
Much of official 'leftist' thought seems to have been invented to place the responsibility for terrible acts committed by individuals and groups onto the 'system' (thus making it easy to claim that blaming any person or group must be bigotry). What the Khazars are facing is the fact that the mythology created to excuse their behavior directed to the 'right' - based on Khazar group strength and some weird invented religious notions that this is right as might makes right (and is divinely ordained) - is obviously inconsistent with the mythology needed to excuse their behavior directed to the 'left', based on a mythological repression which is hard to swallow given what anybody can see of the power structure of places like Assholia (made even more stark when you consider the brownness of the real victims of the Khazars). As I keep saying, real progressives from the 1920s and 1930s would have no problem in figuring this out, having a native understanding that genuine progressive politics requires extreme Khazar skepticism. Everything was ruined when the Nazi-Khazar plot to create a 'refugee crisis' in Europe provided the PR basis for the Khazars to remove any possibility of Khazar skepticism from the discussion. Note how fast Omar's righteous comments were amended to make them 'anti-Semitic', and then immediately opposed, derided and lamented with discussions of 'the Holocaust'! The whole thing is so obviously intellectually bogus that the only way they get away with it is absolute control of the (((media))) and respectable high-level thought (from control of the universities and stink tanks through their usual nepotism technique).

Mary Harris Jones, Mother Jones, was born in 1830. She lived a quiet, non-public life until she was approximately 47 years old and then, for almost the next fifty years, she was a fiery union organizer, strike leader, and fighter for safe and humane working conditions, the eight hour day, and child labor laws. Around the turn of the century, she was called the most dangerous woman in America. Her legacy has lived on in the form of a magazine that bears the name, Mother Jones; and in the form of a one-woman play about her life, produced, acted and written by singer and songwriter Ronnie Gilbert. Mother Jones recommends any books by Leo Tolstoy. Ronnie Gilbert recommends “Hawaii,” by James Mechiner. Originally Broadcast: March 12, 1997

Alaphilippe eyes Strade Bianche, Tirreno-Adriatico, Milan-San Remo hat-trick Cache Translate Page

Buoyed by Deceuninck-QuickStep's early season run of success and his own victory at Saturday’s Strade Bianche, Julian Alaphilippe has admitted that a hat-trick of victories at Strade Bianche, Tirreno-Adriatico and Milan-San Remo is possible.

Davide Rebellin and Philippe Gilbert are the last two riders to win the Ardennes hat-trick – Liège-Bastogne-Liège, Amstel Gold and Flèche Wallonne – while Fabian Cancellara is the only rider to have won all three of the Italian March races, in 2008.

Now, Alaphilippe is ready to give it a try, having built his early season around the March races, considering them more important than a second victory at Flèche, which he secured last season.

"I don't know. I hope I can do it. I’ll certainly try my best," replied Alaphilippe when Cyclingnews asked about the chances of him completing the Italian Trittico.

"Strade Bianche was my first big goal – maybe more so than Flèche Wallonne – so I'm really happy to have won it. Now I want more, and I'll be focused for Tirreno-Adriatico and for Milan-San Remo. But I'm also relaxed because I've already won four races, and winning Strade Bianche as I did was really special."

Alaphilippe rode the Vuelta a San Jun and then the Tour Colombia 2.1 stage race as important early-season preparation, staying on in Colombia for extra altitude training. He and Deceuninck-QuickStep identified Strade Bianche, Tirreno-Adriatico and Milan-San Remo as three achievable goals that perfectly suit the Frenchman's abilities and racing skills. He will take a break as other riders target the cobbled Classics and then return for the Ardennes Classics.

Entenda a concessão no Nordeste

It's worth noting that when you moved to Boise in 2008... The economy was in the toilet. I went to every architectural firm in town with my happy smile and solid resume, but they told me they were barely keeping the staff they had while trying to keep the lights on. I went to a temp agency which got me a job at the Idaho Business Review. I helped them for a while but got laid off in 2011. I was like, "Whatever." So, I decided to take advantage of what Boise had to offer that summer: floating the river and seeing some concerts. That's when I first met Eric Gilbert, who was booking many of those shows. He said, "Wouldn't it be cool to start an amazing festival right here in Boise? Say, don't you do marketing?" But I answered, "Hey, right now I float the river professionally." But later, I thought I could dust off my marketing skills. A few months later, Eric approached me again and said, "Look. I'm working on this with a couple of friends [Lori Shandro Outen and Drew Lorona]. Do you want to be part of the team?" And I said, "Sounds great." And the very first Treefort was six months later. And now here we are, ready for the ninth Treefort, with no fewer than 441 bands or performers on the schedule. Additionally, you now have a total of nine ancillary "forts"— Alefort, Comedyfort, Filmfort, Foodfort, Hackfort, Kidfort, Skatefort, Storyfort and Yogafort. How…

from Wes Gilbertson at the Calgary Sun, On a night that everything seemed to go his way, this could have been Johnny Gaudreau’s biggest challenge. The Calgary Flames superstar winger had just busted out of his scoring slump in a massive way, notching a hat-trick — including the game-winner on a penalty-shot — and a trio of assists to power Tuesday’s hosts to a 9-4 victory over the injury-depleted New Jersey Devils at the Saddledome. Now, in a jubilant locker-room, a team staffer handed Gaudreau a half-dozen pucks for a photo opp. Gaudreau fumbled for a moment with all that evidence but eventually managed to squeeze all six, a juggling act not many guys will ever have to worry about. continued Watch Gaudreau talk about his night below.

Ever wanted the inside scoop on crashing that exclusive party, getting better than average dope, and spending the night with someone you'd be ashamed to be seen with the next morning?

Filmmaker Paul Sapiano answers your questions on these and many other critical areas of the party lifestyle in this satiric comedy. Presented in part as a faux-documentary and in part as the story of a typical night in the life of a handful of Los Angeles nightlife mavens.

The Boys & Girls Guide to Getting Down offers "useful" advice on getting into the club, scamming free drinks, tipping the bar staff, dealing with uncooperative drug dealers, talking your way into an all-star after party, how to attract women by pretending to be gay, and getting rid of last night's pickup in the cold light of the morning.

The Boys & Girls Guide to Getting Down received its world premiere at the 2006 Los Angeles Film Festival.

Claim: The cause of swelling in a girl's jaw is determined to be cockroach eggs she got from eating a Taco Bell taco or licking envelopes.

Status: False.

You'll never eat fast food again!

This girl was really in a hurry one day so she just stopped off at a Taco Bell and got a Chicken soft taco and ate it on the way home. Well that night she noticed her jaw was kind of tight and swollen. The next day it was a little worse so she went to her doctor. He said she was just have an allergic reaction to something and gave her some cream to rub on her jaw to help.

After a couple of days the swelling had just gotten worse and she could hardly move her jaw. She went back to her doctor to see what was wrong. Her doctor had no idea so he started to run some test. They scrubbed out the inside of her mouth to get tissue samples and they also took some saliva samples. Well they found out what was wrong.

Apparently her chicken soft taco had a pregnant roach in it that she ate!!!! The eggs then some how got into her saliva glands and she was incubating them in her mouth. They had to remove a couple a layers of her inner mouth to get all the eggs out. If they hadn't figured out what was going on the eggs would have hatched inside the lining of her mouth!

She's suing Taco Bell! Of course.

Claim: Photograph shows a shark attacking a British Navy diver.

Status: False.

Origins: Like thousands of other school-age American kids, in the summer of 1966 I eagerly made my way to the local movie theater for an afternoon screening of Batman, a feature-length film quickly put together to capitalize on the sudden, mammoth popularity of the television series (and to exploit the entertainment needs of millions of youngsters on summer break with no Internet, video games, VCRs, or cable television to keep them amused). What a treat to see Batman and Robin on the big screen in full color (we had only black-and-white TV at home), battling a confederacy of no less than four arch-villains!

One of the early scenes in that film stuck in my impressionable young mind — Batman, out on the water to reconnoiter a buoy, has to fend off the attack of a man-eating (and exploding!) shark, which sinks its teeth into the ladder from which the Caped Crusader perilously clings as he dangles beneath the Batcopter. When I viewed this same film on TV many years later, I couldn't help but laugh uproariously upon noticing that the terrifying sea creature I had breathelssly watched Batman pummel with life-and-death ferocity (and finally vanquish only with liberal application of Bat Shark Repellant) decades earlier was so obviously nothing more than a cheap, shark-shaped piece of plastic affixed to a ladder. (A few glimpses of this scene can be viewed in the Batman original trailer available on the Internet.)

I had nearly the same reaction when readers started forwarding us the above photograph (usually credited to National Geographic magazine or Geo, a similar German-language publication, and mailed under titles such as "Really Bad Day!" or "Jaws 2001" or "Photo of the Year") back in August 2001 to ask if it were real. Alas, like Batman's attacker, it too is a fake, an image created by combining two real but unrelated photographs — a picture of a great white shark taken by South African photographer Charles Maxwell, and an Air Force photo of an HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopter from the 129th Rescue Wing, Moffett FAF (a California National Guard unit) snapped by Lance Cheung (with San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge in the background):

Origins: Penny Brown, the little girl who is evidently nothing more than the product of some prankster's imagination, is the longest-lived "missing child" hoax we have chronicled on this site. In all the time since the above-quoted plea to aid in the hunt for her began circulating on the Internet in mid-September 2001 rarely has the term "Penny Brown" dropped off our site's list of top searches even though there was never reason to place any reliance upon the message. None of the many missing children sites listed a Penny Brown among the youngsters they were looking for, and searched of news archives in the U.S. and Canada turned up no news reports about a missing child of this name.

Moreover, the e-mail itself provided few of the details that generally appear in legitimate pleas to help locate missing children. Not even the city or country the child went missing from was mentioned, and other than the pointless "has been missing for now two weeks," no date was given for the disappearance. ("For now two weeks" statements are entirely useless in a medium wherein undated text is circulated — the "two weeks" ago of an e-mail can and often has referred to events years in the past.) E-mail sent to the supplied contact address of was bounced back to the sender.

Credible missing child reports tend to supply details of when and where the child was last seen, a description of the clothes worn, and phone numbers of people to contact about sightings. This e-mail lacked all of that — not even the parents' names were given.

(We don't know the identity of the girl in the accompanying picture, but the photo definitely isn't one of a young Melissa Gilbert of Little House on the Prairie TV fame.)

One version of the widely-circulated e-mail made it appear the plea was coming from Monzine Jang, a woman who worked for a physician at the University of Calgary. A call to the number provided in the e-mail fetched the following automated voice message:
If you are calling regarding an e-mail about a missing girl, please do not forward it as she is not the daughter of Monzine Jang. Monzine has contacted the Calgary police and missing children organization and she believes this is a hoax.
Another version claimed the frantic mother was Helen Bessenyei, a woman who lived in Australia. Helen had three grown sons, but no daughter, and certainly not a missing nine-year-old named Penny Brown. This hoax left her answering up to 150 e-mails a day and fielding hundreds of phone calls.

Yet another version purported to have come from a woman named Kimberly Leon. An additional version said the child went missing in Austin, Texas. And still another version claimed the child was lost in Ottawa, Ontario. Winning the "farthest away" category was a version that claimed the child went missing in Singapore.

Evern more iterations — these versions translated into French — were "signed" by Carol Toteda of Montreal or Anne-Claire Kubala, the latter giving an address that placed her in Paris. Also placing the tale in Canada was a version "signed" by Annie Lachance that asserted the missing Penny was the child of one of the store managers from Metro-Richelieu (a large grocery store).

Another form of this message that began "We have a store manager from Longs Drugs in Southern California, whose 9 year old daughter has been missing for 2 weeks" was signed "Peggy." Closely related to that version was another that said: "We have a store manager from Longs, SC who has a 9 year old daughter that has been missing for 2 weeks." It too has been signed by "Peggy." In yet another twist, the e-mail appeared signed by one "Penny Hill MS 59, Sunnyvale — AMD."

Those who are still somewhat convinced this e-mailed alert might be true should take a look at the text of the "missing kid" alert quoted in the Example section of our page about Christopher Mineo. In particular, note that the "It only takes 2 seconds to forward this on, if it was your child, you would want all the help you could get" line that is common to both.

Claim: Washing the lint filter in your clothes dryer can help extend the lifespan of that appliance.

Status: True.

Example: [Collected on the Internet, 2005]

I had a wonderful morning, the heating unit went out of my dryer! Why does everything seem to fall apart this time of year!???

The guy that fixes things went in to the dryer and pulled out the lint filter. It was clean. We always clean the lint from the filter after every load of clothes. He told us that he wanted to show him something. He took the filter over to the sink and ran hot water over it. Now, this thing is like a mesh - I'm sure you know what your dryer's lint filter looks like - WELL......the hot water just laid on top of the mesh!!! It didn't go through it at all!!!

He told us that dryer sheets cause a film over that mesh and that's what burns out the heating unit. You can't SEE the film, but it's there. He said the best way to keep your dryer working for a very long time (and to keep your electric bill lower) is to take that filter out and wash it with hot soapy water and an old toothbrush (or other brush) at least every six months. He said that makes the life of the dryer at least twice as long! How about that???!!!! Learn something new everyday!

I certainly didn't know dryer sheets would do that. So, thought I'd share!

I went to dryer and tested my screen by running water on it. The water collected a little but ran though the screen. I dried it off and was ready to put it back in the dryer since the water ran through it but, I thought was the heck it won't hurt to wash it while I had it out. Warm soap water and a nylon brush and I had it done in 30 seconds.

I then ran the water over the screen and what a difference the water just gushed through it with no puddling at all and this time I was running the water at a faster rate. That repairman knew what he was talking about.

Origins: There are a number of devices and appliances that have been standard household items in American homes since before most of us were born. Electric irons, dishwashers, vacuum cleaners, gas (or electric) stoves and ovens, washing machines, and clothes dryers are but a few of the many labor-saving devices so familiar to many of us that we seldom ponder just how they work. Ask the average person, for example, how a clothes dryer works, and you'll probably get an "Are you kidding me?" look in return, along with a terse explanation that a dryer makes stuff "hot," and everybody knows stuff dries faster when it's hot.

That explanation isn't technically wrong (as far as it goes), but it's rather simplistic. Knowing a bit more about the process involved is the key to understanding why the advice to keep your dryer's lint filter clean can help improve the performance and lifespan of your clothes dryer.

In a standard (gas) dryer, a fan pulls fresh air into the dryer and sends it flowing over a gas burner. The burner heats the air, which is then channeled into a tumbling drum where the wet clothes are held. The heat, air flow, and tumbling motion all contribute to evaporating the moisture held in the fabrics, and that moisture is absorbed by the gas-warmed air. (Warm air is capable of holding more moisture than cold air.) The warm air — and the moisture it now holds — passes through a filter to trap lint and other particulate matter stirred up by its movement and is vented to the outside so that it can be replaced with new, less-moist air. This process repeats until enough moisture has been evaporated and carried away for the clothes to be considered sufficiently "dry."

Of course, if you neglect to clean the lint filter between dryings, or something else occludes the filter, moist air cannot be vented from the dryer as easily. The result will be that your dryer will work less efficiently — you will have to run your dryer longer to dry a load of clothes, which means higher electricity and gas charges for you and a shorter lifespan for your dryer.

So, keeping the lint filter clean is one simple way to increase the efficiency and lifespan (and decrease the operating costs) of your dryer. Just removing the lint from the filter isn't always enough — the fine mesh of most dryer filters can be clogged in ways that aren't obvious at a casual glance. As suggested by the piece quoted above, softener sheets can cause waxy build-ups on lint screens that require a little extra effort — usually no more than a quick scrub and rinse in warm, soapy water — to remove.

Many modern dryers also use moisture sensors rather than ordinary timed cycles, and residue from dryer sheets can coat the sensors and interfere with their ability to function properly. Cleaning the sensor screen with a little detergent and a soft brush, and wiping off the sensor itself with a cotton ball and some rubbing alcohol can rectify this problem.

Claim: Starbucks refused free product to G.I.s serving in Iraq, saying it didn't support the war and anyone in it.

Status: False.

Example: [Collected on the Internet, 2004]

I have indeed confirmed the fact that Starbucks charged rescue workers $130.00 for 3 cases of bottled water on September 11, 2001, so the following info that was passed on to me would not be surprising to me at all!!

Dear everyone: Please pass this along to anyone you know, this needs to get out in the open. Recently Marines over in Iraq supporting this country in OIF wrote to Starbucks because they wanted to let them know how much they liked their coffee and try to score some free coffee grounds. Starbucks wrote back telling the Marines thanks for their support in their business, but that they don't support the War and anyone in it and that they won't send them the Coffee. So as not to offend them we should not support in buying any Starbucks products. As a War vet and writing to you patriots I feel we should get this out in the open. I know this War might not be very popular with some folks, but that doesn't mean we don't support the boys on the ground fighting street to street and house to house for what they and I believe is right. If you feel the same as I do then pass this along, or you can discard it and I'll never know. Thanks very much for your support to me, and I know you'll all be there again here soon when I deploy once more.

Semper Fidelis,
Sgt Howard C. Wright

Origins: We first encountered this story in late April 2004 when it turned up in our inbox. In these days of heightened patriotism and concern for the troops, any rumor about a corporate giant snubbing those who are putting their lives on the line overseas is bound to make a number of folks hot under the collar, which is what this e-mail has done.

We've been in touch with the e-mail's writer and have asked him about the events that led to his penning the note about Starbucks' response to Marines who had come to them looking for a donation of coffee. Sgt. Wright (who is stationed Stateside at the moment but who will be deployed overseas in the next few months), heard the story from a friend, who had gotten it from someone else. He talked things over with the Marine who had supposedly contacted Starbucks, and that, coupled with that night's televised news about the goings on in Iraq, made his blood boil. He pounded out his thoughts into the form of an e-mail, which he mailed to ten of his friends.

It is that e-mail which continues to circulate to this day. Sgt. Wright has since learned that what he heard was in error, and he has subsequently tried to set things right by issuing the following retraction:

Dear Readers,

Almost 5 months ago I sent an email to you my faithful friends. I did a wrong thou that needs to be cleared up. I heard from word of mouth about how Starbucks said they didn't support the war and all. I was having enough of that kind of talk and didn't do my research properly like I should have. This is not true. Starbucks supports the men and women in uniform. They have personally contacted me and I have been sent many of their Company's policy on this issue. So I apologize for this quick wrong letter I sent out to you. Now I ask that you all pass this email around to everyone you passed the last one to. Thank you very much for understanding about this.

Howard C. Wright

Sgt. Wright has been unable to produce the reply his buddy supposedly received from Starbucks, and the folks at Starbucks deny engaging in any correspondence on such matter prior to this rumor coming along. Given that no copy of the letter appears to exist, neither one resting in the hands of the Sergeant's comrade, nor one residing in Starbucks' files, the rumor about the java vendor's harsh response to a coffee-hunting Marine should be dismissed.

As for what Starbucks has to say about the matter, while it doesn't directly refute the rumor on its web site, it does at least provide somewhat of an answer in e-mail. An excerpt from that statement reads:

Starbucks has the deepest respect and admiration for U.S. military personnel. We are extremely grateful to the men and women who serve stateside or overseas. We sincerely appreciate that they are willing to risk their lives to protect Americans and our values of freedom and democracy. While Starbucks as a company cannot directly donate to military personnel, many of our partners (employees) show their support by donating coffee.

Starbucks partners receive one pound of free coffee each week as an employee benefit (known as "partner mark-out"). Many of our partners have elected to send their weekly mark-out of coffee to members of the military or military families, and related organizations. Our partners have collected and shipped numerous pounds of Starbucks coffee overseas.

As an example of this generosity, our partners in our Atascadero, California store sent their weekly mark out coffee to troops in Afghanistan so they are able to enjoy a little piece of home. Our customer relations department in Seattle donated hundreds of pounds of coffee to the sailors in the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier group.

Under the terms of the Starbucks' corporate giving policy, had such a request been made, the coffee giant would have had to say no to it. Such a refusal would have been in keeping with the corporation's donations policy, in that Starbucks chooses to direct its charitable resources within the communities where its stores are located and limits its funding to non-profit organizations. Moreover, it does not consider requests for funding that come from political or religious organizations or which would fund political or religious initiatives or programs. According to the guidelines currently in place, a request for coffee from soldiers serving overseas would be turned down.

However, while it is true Starbucks as a corporate entity could not have donated coffee to java-seeking Marines, it would have passed along such a request to any number of its employees who are looking for military mailing addresses to send product to, as it has already done on many occasions. Starbucks partners receive one pound of free coffee each week as an employee benefit (known as "partner mark-out"). Many of them have elected to send their weekly mark-out to members of the military or military families, and related organizations.

The claim that Starbucks would ever have said "they don't support the War and anyone in it" is false, in light of what various news accounts show us about the coffee retailer's attitude towards those who serve in the armed forces. In addition to what Starbucks itself says above of its beneficences to soldiers, we know from different newspaper articles of other instances of glad-hearted support. In July 2004, a Starbucks in Cincinnati was reported to have been practically overflowing with people making yellow ribbons in support of Keith "Matt" Maupin, a soldier whose fate was then uncertain (it has subsequently been reported that he had been beheaded by his captors), along with red, white, and blue ones to show support for American troops in Iraq. In June 2004 in Cleveland, when the mother of one serviceman called her local Starbucks to arrange for the shipping of some java to her son, the employees at that store insisted on paying for 30 pounds of coffee as their gift.

Regarding another of the claims made in the e-mail, while it is true someone working at a New York City Starbucks did indeed charge ambulance workers $130 for three cases of water on September 11, 2001, it would not be quite fair to say Starbucks did this. However, act of a single, misguided employee or not, the corporation alone bears responsibility for afterwards spurning a number of opportunities to offer the rescue workers their money back or apologize to them — though it finally took both those actions, it did so only after the story attracted online and print media attention.

In addition to the "rescue workers charged for water" and the "spurned servicemen" story that is the focus of this piece, Starbucks has been the butt of a number of other unsavory rumors and mistaken beliefs just in the past few years, including:
A 2002 poster promoting two new iced drinks prompted some consumers to see in it reminders of the hijacked planes hitting the twin towers.

In 2001, a false story spread in e-mail about the wife of the owner of a Thailand Starbucks telling non-white customers the coffee shop was not for Asians.

The company's 2003 termination of its business interests in Israel caused some to believe Starbucks had abandoned that nation in favor of being able to continue to do business in Arab countries.

In 2002, a prankster who scanned and distributed online a coupon entitling the bearer to a free Crème Frappuccino caused any amount of bad feeling to be directed at the company — those duped into believing they were entitled to free product were often angry at the stores who refused to honor the fake coupons rather than with the unnamed person who had deceived them.

Starbucks, like any other successful corporation that has a strong public presence, is fated to operate with the Damocles sword of public opinion hanging above its head. No corporation can fund everyone who comes to it looking for assistance, which means some deserving groups will always be refused. In less emotionally-charged times, the logic of such a policy is better understood, but the current climate makes it a dicey PR proposition at best to say no to anything having to do with soldiers.

Status: Possible, but not common.

Good Information

This was just passed on to me. Seems to make a lot of sense. IT COULD CERTAINLY HAPPEN TO ME EASILY ENOUGH......

SCENE 1: A friend went to the local gym and placed his belongings in the locker. After the workout and a shower, he came out, saw the locker open, and thought to himself, "Funny, I thought I locked the locker. Hmmmmm."

He dressed and just flipped the wallet to make sure all was in order. Everything looked okay — all cards were in place. A few weeks later his credit card bill came — a whooping bill of $14.000! He called the credit card company and started yelling at them, saying that he did not make the transactions. Customer care personnel verified that there was no mistake in the system and asked if his card had been stolen. "No," he said, but then took out his wallet, pulled out the credit card, and yep, you guessed it, a switch had been made. An expired similar credit card from the same bank was in the wallet. The thief broke into his locker at the gym and switched cards.

Verdict: The credit card issuer said since he did not report the card missing earlier, he would have to pay the amount owed to them. How much did he have to pay for items he did not buy? $9,000! Why were there no calls made to verify the amount swiped? Small amounts rarely trigger a "warning bell" with some credit card companies. It just so happens that all the small amounts added up to big one!

SCENE 2: A man at a local restaurant paid for his meal with his credit card. The bill for the meal came, he signed it, and the waitress folded the receipt and passed the credit card along. Usually, he would just take it and place it in his wallet or pocket. Funny enough, though, he actually took a look at the card and, lo and behold, it was the expired card of another person. He called the waitress and she looked perplexed. She took it back, apologized, and hurried back to the counter under the watchful eye of the man. All the waitress did while walking to the counter was wave the wrong expired card to the counter cashier, and the counter cashier immediately looked down and took out the real card. No exchange of words — nothing! She took it and came back to the man with an apology.

Verdict: Make sure the credit cards in your wallet are yours. Check the name on the card every time you sign for something and/or the card is taken away for even a short period of time. Many people just take back the credit card without even looking at it, thinking that it has to be theirs.

SCENE 3: Yesterday I went into a pizza restaurant to pick up an order that I had called in. I paid by using my Visa Check Card which, of course, is linked directly to my checking account. The young man behind the counter took my card, swiped it, then laid it flat on the counter as he waited for the approval, which is pretty standard procedure. While he waited, he picked up his cell phone and started dialing. I noticed the phone because it is the same model I have, but nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

Then I heard a click that sounded like my phone sounds when I take a picture. He then gave me back my card but kept the phone in his hand as if he was still pressing buttons. Meanwhile, I'm thinking: I wonder what he is taking a picture of, oblivious to what was really going on. It then dawned on me: the only thing there was as my credit card, so now I'm paying close attention to what he is doing.

He set his phone on the counter, leaving it open. About five seconds later, I heard the chime that tells you that the picture has been saved. Now I'm standing there struggling with the fact that this boy just took a picture of my credit card. Yes, he played it off well, because had we not had the same kind of phone, I probably would never have known what happened. Needless to say, I immediately canceled that card as I was walking out of the pizza parlor.

All I am saying is, be aware of your surroundings at all times. Whenever you are using your credit cards, take caution and don't be careless. Notice who is standing near you and what they are doing when you use your card. Be aware of phones because many have a camera phone these days. When you are in a restaurant and the waiter/waitress brings your card and receipt for you to sign, make sure you scratch the number off.

Some restaurants are using only the last four digits, but a lot of them are still putting the whole thing on there. I have already been a victim of credit card fraud and, believe me, it is not fun. The truth is that they can get you even when you are careful, so don't make it easy for them.

Origins: The item quoted above is another example of a "crime warning" message that is difficult to classify as either true or false. The scenarios it describes are possible, and someone, somewhere, might very well have been victimized by them, but on the other hand the message provides no details of time, place, or person, to use in verifying these tales, and the scenarios proffered are generally too implausible to be of much legitimate concern to the average person.

The first two entries describe scammers who supposedly switch expired credit cards for valid credit cards, thereby enabling them to run up thousands of dollars in charges before the victims realize their cards are missing. This isn't a scheme likely to be successful in most cases, for a number of reasons:
Not all credit cards look alike. Common credit cards such as VISA and MasterCard vary quite widely in appearance, featuring different logos (based upon the issuing financial institutions), different colors of plastic, and even different (customer-selected) background designs. For this scenario to work, the putative thieves would have to carry around a plethora of different styles of cards and hope to hit a long shot by coincidentally matching one of their cards to a victim's particular card.

The deception will be obvious the next time the victim uses (or, presumably, even looks at) his card, which doesn't give the scammers much time to try to run up a huge charge on the stolen card via many small purchases. Contrary to the claim made above, most credit card issuers will flag as suspect thousands of dollars' worth of charges made on a credit card within a short period of time, even if none of those charges is for a large amount.

No explanation is offered for how these scammers supposedly come by their handy supply of expired credit cards. Most customers discard their expired cards by throwing them into the trash, usually after having cut them in two (or otherwise mutilated them).

Frankly, if you're habitually leaving your wallet unattended in an easily-opened locker, you've got a lot more to be concerned about than potential visits from card-swapping scammers.

The third scenario covers a situation we've already written an article about, that of identity thieves supposedly snapping pictures of credit cards with cell phone cameras. This scheme too is possible but implausible, since:
It's still quite difficult (given the quality of cell phone cameras, the reflectiveness of plastic credit cards, and the usual lack of contrast between the colors of a card's imprinted numbers and its background) to quickly snap off a clear photo of a credit card.

Taking a picture of the front of a credit card won't capture the CVC2 or CVV2 security code required for most CNP (i.e., "card not present") purchases. (American Express, however, is an exception to this; its security code is printed on the cardface.)

Retail clerks and others who typically handle customers' credit cards in the course of business transactions have many, many ways of recording card numbers that are better and easier (and less obtrusive) than literally pointing a camera at a card and taking a picture of it.

The admonition to "take caution and don't be careless" with your credit cards is generally sound, but then again, it's also rather obvious advice that applies to just about every aspect of life.

Status: False.

Origins: No, you're not going to be receiving money, merchandise, or free trips from Bill Gates (or anyone else), no matter how many people you forward this message to. Tracing all recipients of an e-mail message is not yet technically possible, and even if it were, Bill Gates certainly wouldn't be testing software that performed such tracking by blindly sending messages out to the Internet with a promise of financial reward to the recipients.

First and foremost, e-mail tracking programs do not exist. That folks continue to fall for myriad varieties of these leg-pulls is in part attributable to netizens having caught so many references to these non-existent programs that the new hoax is able to continue building on an already partially-constructed platform of belief.

(As with every other technological issue, the statement "e-mail tracking programs do not exist" becomes less and less true every day. It is possible in some cases to determine who has read a particular mail message, but there is no method of doing so that will work with all the myriad of e-mail programs out there or keep track of who forwarded the message to whom.)

Once again, e-mail tracing programs do not exist. Any "get something free" come-on or "help a sick kid" appeal which specifies an invisible program is keeping track of who received an e-mail and who it was then sent to is a hoax. Any such note. No exceptions. Not even ones not yet listed on this page.

Likewise, missives which offer no explanation of how the e-mails are being tallied are also hoaxes. Unless you are e-mailing a copy to a central tabulating point every time something is forwarded on, nothing is being counted, traced, tracked, or any other verb that would result in you getting free cargo pants from the GAP or inspiring an unnamed millionaire to donate just a little bit more towards the care of an injured child.

With all that said, we can begin looking at the various forms this jape has so far taken. And it's going to be a long, strange journey indeed.

Claim: Commentator Andy Rooney explains his political views.

Status: False.

Examples: [Collected on the Internet, 2003]

Right on, Andy Rooney!

Andy Rooney said on 60 minutes a few weeks back: (for those of you that don't know Andy Rooney, he is an 82 year old US TV commentator)

I like big cars, big boats, big motorcycles, big houses and big campfires.

I believe the money I make belongs to me and my family, not some governmental stooge with a bad comb-over who wants to give it away to crack addicts for squirting out babies.

Guns do not make you a killer. I think killing makes you a killer. You can kill someone with a baseball bat or a car, but no one is trying to ban you from driving to the ball game.

I believe they are called the Boy Scouts for a reason, that is why there are no girls allowed. Girls belong in the Girl Scouts!

I think that if you feel homosexuality is wrong, it is not a phobia, it is an opinion.

I don't think being a minority makes you a victim of anything except numbers. The only things I can think of that are truly discriminatory are things like the United Negro College Fund, Jet Magazine, Black Entertainment Television, and Miss Black America.

Try to have things like the United Caucasian College Fund, Cloud Magazine, White entertainment Television, or Miss White America and see what happens. Jesse Jackson will be knocking down your door.

I have the right NOT to be tolerant of others because they are different, weird, or tick me off. When 70% of the people who get arrested are black, in cities where 70% of the population is black, that is not racial profiling, it is the law of statistics.

I know what sex is, and there are not varying degrees of it. If I received sex from one of the subordinates in my office, it wouldn't be a private matter or my personal business. I would be "FIRED" immediately!

I believe that if you are selling me a milk shake, a pack of cigarettes, a newspaper or a hotel room, you must do it in English! As a matter of fact, if you want to be an American citizen you should have to speak English!

My father and grandfather shouldn't have to die in vain so you can leave the countries you were born in to come over and disrespect ours. I think the police should have every right to shoot your sorry ass if you threaten them after they tell you to stop. If you can't understand the word "freeze" or "stop" in English, see the above lines.

I feel much safer letting a machine with no political affiliation recount votes when needed. I know what the definition of lying is.

I don't think just because you were not born in this country, you are qualified for any special loan programs, government sponsored bank loans or tax breaks, etc., so you can open a hotel, coffee shop, trinket store, or any other business. We did not go to the aid of certain foreign countries and risk our lives in wars to defend their freedoms so that decades later they could come over here and tell us our constitution is a living document and open to their interpretations.

I don't hate the rich. I don't pity the poor.

I know wrestling is fake, but so are movies and television, and that doesn't stop you from watching them.

I believe a self-righteous liberal or conservative with a cause is more dangerous than a Hell's Angel with an attitude.

I think Bill Gates has every right to keep every penny he made and continue to make more. If it ticks you off, go and invent the next operating system that's better and put your name on the building. Ask your buddy that invented the Internet to help you.

It doesn't take a whole village to raise a child right, but it does take a parent to stand up to the kid and smack their little ass when necessary and say "NO."

I think tattoos and piercing are fine if you want them, but please don't pretend they are a political statement. And . . . Please stay home until that new lip ring heals, I don't want to look at your ugly infected mouth as you serve me french fries!

I am sick of "Political Correctness" and of all the suck ups that go along with it. I know a lot of black people, and not a single one of them was born in Africa, so how can they be "African-Americans"? Besides, Africa is a continent. I don't go around saying I am a European-American because my great, great, great, great, great, great grandfather was from Europe. I am proud to be from America and nowhere else.

And if you don't like my point of view, tough!

Andy is 83 and entitled to his opinion.

Origins: Curmudgeonly 60 Minutes commentator Andy Rooney may have delivered a vituperative essay on French politics in 2003, but this piece elaborating on his own politics is not his creation. The text quoted above is too reactionary even for the acerbic Rooney, and the language used doesn't sound like him. ("Shoot your sorry ass" just isn't the kind of phrase Andy Rooney employs on television.) Just to be thorough, we checked the transcripts of all of Andy Rooney's 60 Minutes pieces from the last ten years, and nothing like this item turned up.

Moreover, Rooney himself denied it in 2003, saying:
About a year ago, I became aware of a more serious theft of my name and it is so hurtful to my reputation that it calls for legal action against the thief. Hundreds of people have written asking if I really wrote the 20 detestable remarks made under my name that have had such wide circulation on the Internet.

Some of the remarks, which I will not repeat here, are viciously racist and the spirit of the whole thing is nasty, mean and totally inconsistent with my philosophy of life. It is apparent that the list of comments has been read by hundreds of thousands of Americans, many of whom must believe that it accurately represents opinions of mine that I don't dare express in my column or on television. It is seriously damaging to my reputation.
The final two items on the list are probably a good tipoff that either this collection was written (by an as yet unidentified author) as a parody of the "A Few Minutes With Andy Rooney" spots on 60 Minutes, or someone appended Andy Rooney's name to an unattributed piece because it "seemed like something he would say." Either way, whoever created this version appears to have lifted some parts from an earlier piece known as "Yes, I Guess I am A BAD American" and falsely credited to comedian George Carlin.

Virus: Life is Beautiful.pps

Status: Hoax.

Example: [Collected on the Internet, 2002]

This information arrived this morning, from Microsoft and Norton. Please send it to everybody you know who accesses the Internet.

You may receive an apparently harmless email with a PowerPoint presentation called "Life is beautiful.pps."

If you receive it DO NOT OPEN THE FILE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, and delete it immediately.

If you open this file, a message will appear on your screen saying: "It is too late now, your life is no longer beautiful", subsequently you will LOSE EVERYTHING IN YOUR PC and the person who sent it to you will gain access to your name, email and password.

This is a new virus which started to circulate on Saturday afternoon. WE NEED TO DO EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO STOP THIS VIRUS.

AOL has already confirmed its dangerousness, and the antivirus Softs are not capable of destroying it. The virus has been created by a hacker who calls himself "life owner", and who aims to destroying domestic PCs and who also fights Microsoft in court! That's why it comes disguised with extension pps. He fights in court for the Windows-XP patent.

Origins: This warning about a Microsoft PowerPoint file named "Life is Beautiful" carrying a a computer-destroying virus is a hoax, one that has been with us since at least January 2002. It originally circulated in Portuguese but was later translated into English and a host of other languages.

Although this particular example is a hoax, PowerPoint presentations can contain viruses, so prudent computer users should always check downloaded or e-mailed PowerPoint presentations (and all other non-text attachments) before opening them.

In September 2002 this hoax was circulated anew as "Everything is Beautiful," and it popped up again in 2003 re-titled as "Life is Wonderful."

Treefort Co-founder Megan Stoll Cache Translate Page
The Treefort co-founder on the past, the present, and why you'll need three pairs of shoes Megan Stoll was born and raised in Hickory, North Carolina, home to some of the nation's most famous furniture manufacturers. It's a mecca for people from all over the world searching for the perfect hand-crafted chair. But don't expect Stoll to be looking for a chair anytime soon. As co-founder and marketing director of the wildly successful Treefort Music Fest, she has to be one of the busiest people in Idaho right now, with preparations for the festival's ninth iteration in full swing. True, Stoll went to the University of Greensboro (in North Carolina), graduated with a degree in textile design and marketing and worked in design and architectural firms in North Carolina, Virginia, Florida and Oklahoma. But when she moved to Boise in 2008 her professional life took a significant left-turn and, as a result, she helped reinvent the Boise music scene on the grandest scale to date. How…

Cortical distance, not cancellation, dominates inter-subject EEG gamma rhythm amplitude.

Neuroimage. 2019 Mar 08;:

Authors: Butler R, Bernier PM, Mierzwinski GW, Descoteaux M, Gilbert G, Whittingstall K

The neurophysiological response to visual stimulation in both humans and animals is characterized by an increase in high frequency amplitude peaking in the gamma range (40-100Hz) and a suppression of low frequency amplitude peaking in the alpha range (10-16Hz). Due to the large number of studies linking amplitude and peak frequency to perception and neurological disorders, there is great interest in understanding the basis of inter-subject variability in gamma and alpha responses. To address this, we measured gamma and alpha amplitude and peak frequency of response to visual stimulation in 42 healthy humans. Using FMRI to delineate active cortical tissue in the same subjects, we correlated these neurophysiological metrics with two structural metrics: distance from active cortex to electrode, and dipole cancellation over active cortex. We find that distance strongly predicted inter-subject gamma amplitude, but had little effect on alpha amplitude, while cancellation had little effect on gamma or alpha amplitude. Neither alpha peak frequency nor gamma peak frequency correlated with our structural metrics. These results suggest that inter-subject variability in gamma amplitude may reflect gross morphology rather than neurophysiological variability, and should be interpreted with caution, while peak frequency may serve as a more sensitive metric of differences in neuronal activity across subjects.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a leading cause of disease burden worldwide, with lifetime prevalence in the United States of 17%. Here we present the results of the first prospective, large-scale, patient- and rater-blind, randomized controlled trial evaluating the clinical importance of achieving congruence between combinatorial pharmacogenomic (PGx) testing and medication selection for MDD.
METHODS: 1,167 outpatients diagnosed with MDD and an inadequate response to ≥1 psychotropic medications were enrolled and randomized 1:1 to a Treatment as Usual (TAU) arm or PGx-guided care arm. Combinatorial PGx testing categorized medications in three groups based on the level of gene-drug interactions: use as directed, use with caution, or use with increased caution and more frequent monitoring. Patient assessments were performed at weeks 0 (baseline), 4, 8, 12 and 24. Patients, site raters, and central raters were blinded in both arms until after week 8. In the guided-care arm, physicians had access to the combinatorial PGx test result to guide medication selection. Primary outcomes utilized the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D17) and included symptom improvement (percent change in HAM-D17 from baseline), response (50% decrease in HAM-D17 from baseline), and remission (HAM-D17<7) at the fully blinded week 8 time point. The durability of patient outcomes was assessed at week 24. Medications were considered congruent with PGx test results if they were in the 'use as directed' or 'use with caution' report categories while medications in the 'use with increased caution and more frequent monitoring' were considered incongruent. Patients who started on incongruent medications were analyzed separately according to whether they changed to congruent medications by week8.
RESULTS: At week 8, symptom improvement for individuals in the guided-care arm was not significantly different than TAU (27.2% versus 24.4%, p=0.11). However, individuals in the guided-care arm were more likely than those in TAU to achieve remission (15% versus 10%; p<0.01) and response (26% versus 20%; p=0.01). Remission rates, response rates, and symptom reductions continued to improve in the guided-treatment arm until the 24week time point. Congruent prescribing increased to 91% in the guided-care arm by week 8. Among patients who were taking one or more incongruent medication at baseline, those who changed to congruent medications by week 8 demonstrated significantly greater symptom improvement (p<0.01), response (p=0.04), and remission rates (p<0.01) compared to those who persisted on incongruent medications.
CONCLUSIONS: Combinatorial PGx testing improves short- and long-term response and remission rates for MDD compared to standard of care. In addition, prescribing congruency with PGx-guided medication recommendations is important for achieving symptom improvement, response, and remission for MDD patients.Funding Acknowledgements: This study was supported by Assurex Health, Inc.

Sometimes the quiet ones surprise us. Take moss — those fuzzy green pads you see on the sides of old trees, or hanging onto rocks. Who notices moss? It's just ... there, doing whatever it does — so slowly, so terribly slowly, that nobody bothers to think about it. Moss creeps up tree bark, sits quietly on crevasses in rocks. Moss is an old, old life form, one of the earliest plants to attach to land around 450 million years ago. It's very patient, very modest — but when you look closely, you discover it has super powers. Pow! Crunch! Zap! I've just read a spectacular ode to moss, written by Elizabeth Gilbert. (Remember Eat, Pray, Love ? Same author. She's got a new novel , The Signature of All Things .) In it, Gilbert tells the story of Alma Whittaker, a plant-loving Philadelphia girl who finds a couple of boulders behind her house with small patches of moss. They are different species, and when Alma looks closely, she sees they are fighting each other for space. She watches them do

Oh, what a few days it has been! You, my dear reader, already know that Easter is my fave holiday. Let me just TELL you about my days of wonderfulness! Since there is so much the post would go on forever, I have decided to make you a list!

Wonderful things from the past few days:
1) I had the weekend off and got to spend entire DAYS with my family.
2) Mama brought the boys into the children's room at church so I got to listen to the entire Easter mass with minimal interruption (except from my sister!)
3) Buddy, my sister, and I watched part of Jesus of Nazareth Saturday night until everyone was just about asleep (this is one of my all-time favorite movies!)
4) I got to go to Elaina's, and we got our buns! Buddy's is Johnny, a French angora, and mine is Madchen (pronounced maid-chen) a small German angora hybrid.
5) We saw day-old lambs with their mama.
6) Mama made a praline French toast casserole that was awesome.
7) I got to spend hours in Great Yarns while hubby got his new truck. I had a GREAT time.
8) I knit my first whole sock, and it wasn't that hard!
9) I made one of Kate Gilbert's bunnies, and Baba loves it!
10) We saw my FIL and his wife and had a great visit, as well as a great lunch! Hubby and I split a piece of Carnegie's cheesecake with fresh blueberries and it was the best cheesecake ever!
11) Baba had his first Easter basket and had lots of fun!

So, about Great Yarns.... I just had a wonderful time there. They have lots to look at, and look I did! I was told to stick to a budget, so I had to choose very carefully. So, I purchased: for more Kate Gilbert bunnies, 3 balls of Berocco Plush. These are to make a hot pink papa for buddy, and a light blue mama for baba. Next, some Twisted Sisters Jazz handpainted yarn. I love the Twisted Sister's Sock workbook, so when I saw this I *had* to buy it. I also bought ANOTHER set of size six DPNs so that I could start my socks right away!
Lastly, I bought the yarn to make Pippa. Mine will be light pink, with a dark blue edging. I had planned on getting the Calmer to make Elspeth, but they just didn't have enough of the pink I wanted. I will have to get that later. I really like Pippa, too, though, so this was a good choice for me.

SO, what did my son tell me recently when we were watching Gilmore Girls? He wishes I would dress like Lorelai, because "she's a cool mom". Funny, I didn't think my son would want me dressing so *funky*! But, Lorelai wears a lot of shrugs and cardis and stuff, so hey, my knitting would work with that!!

OK, it has been crazy around here the past week. I hate craziness. I like calm and quiet. That, it has not been.

Let's see: the good:

1) I got a package from Sicily!!! Wendy sent me the most AMAZING yarn stash! There is "a whole animal's worth" of a great beige yarn (as my friend Elizabeth said). It is enough to make a cardi or pullover. I am still deciding which to make. This yarn just has the greatest texture to it!
Next, 2 skeins of Grignasco soft kid in beige. What a nice soft yarn this is. Maybe good for a fuzzy collar on cardi? HMMM....
Then there was three skeins of a beautiful dark blue lambswool angora. It is not quite navy and feels great. This need to be made into something that I will wear right against my skin!! Wendy also sent a package of beads which are not shown. They will make pretty stitch markers, just trust me on that one. I put them somewhere baba couldn't get them. Unfortunately a lot of times my "safe" spots are even safe for me because I can't remember where they are!
Image hosted by
2) I arranged a swap with Chelsea, my former SP3! She had gotten the Rowan 37 and did not like it. I wanted to get it, so I asked if she would like some handmade cards and stationery to swap. She said yes, and I rec'd the Rowan book already! There are some beautiful things in this one- I want to make a lot of them! I have made Chelsea a bunch of cards, I am sending them out today or if I can get hubbie to send via UPS tommorrow, so they can get there quicker. I didn't do the stationery yet, because I want to make a few different designs and let her pick one. It is fun making stationery for another person! Oh, I don't actually make the paper, I just do the designs. You'd be surprised how much you can do, though, with some stamps and ink, fibers and markers.....

3) Since buddy moved downstairs, I now have a sewing room! His twin bed is still in there, and it makes a perfect place to put my blocking board, and gives me a place to lay out pattern pieces. Right now I am working on my skirt and blouse for Easter. I found Amy Butler fabrics and patterns thanks to Brynne and SWIM. I am in love! A friend from work really likes the designs too, and I am going to make her one of the handbags. She likes the Chelsea, and I like the Madison.

Today I downloaded patterns for the first time- what fun! I ordered the plain knit bucket hat from Bonne Marie Burns, and the Bunny! from Kate Gilbert. What fun it was to order patterns from a designer, knowing all of the money goes directly to them! I thought the bucket hat in child's size would be great for spring in a cotton. And I had to order the bunnies once I saw them! I think Kate Gilbert is an awesome designer, and I love her sense of color.

There are signs of spring popping up. Today it is about 70 degrees and sunny. I love warm sunny weather, but I don't actually consider it warm until we break 80 degrees. But we are getting there! My pear tree is blooming, and so are my lenten roses. I am going to get the soil and assorted amendments to plant my beautiful valentine's roses this week. I am so excited that it is getting nicer out!

I also had fun yesterday, while at work, we had a little slow time between emergent/urgent surgeries, so I taught my friend RUSS how to knit!! He was so excited, he is making a garter stitch scarf to start out with. I gave him big wool and big needles so that it would be a good "quick" project. Let him get some instant gratification, so he'll be hooked. He was so stoked when he had knit about 4 rows and could see progress!

Toronto is removing the homeless camp under the Gardiner Cache Translate Page

After months of debate over what should be done about the sprawling tent city beneath Toronto's Gardiner Expressway, City staffers are now starting to rid the area of "debris."

Crews were spotted under the busy raised roadway near Lakeshore Boulevard West and Lower Simcoe Street on Wednesday morning scooping up tents, blankets, cans, tarps, bike parts and other personal effects with a loading truck.

The homeless encampment had been dismantled by 12 p.m., according to The Star's Gilbert Ngabo.

Toronto's chief communications officer Brad Ross assured The Star that city workers would assist all of the camp's residents in finding somewhere to stay within the existing shelter system.

"We recognize that not all individuals are prepared to come inside, to engage with us," he said. "But we continue to work with them to provide whatever supports they may need."

Easier said than done, perhaps, with a severe shortage of beds at city-run shelters and most respite centres either at or past capacity.

The situation has become so dire in recent years that experts and advocates for people experiencing homelessness are asking the mayor to declare a state of emergency.

Some of those living under the Gardiner aren't convinced that the city can do much to help them, but they can't say they're surprised by the move.

Many were served notices back in January telling them that they had 14 days to remove their belongings and vacate the space, citing rule violations and safety concerns.

Multiple fires have broken out in Toronto underpasses over the past year as people outdoors try to stay warm in blistering winter weather. At least one of these fires resulted in death.

"Toronto has invested a lot of funds, resources and staffing to try and manage the current situation," said Paul Raftis, the city's general manager of shelter, support and housing, at the time.

He noted that, while clients may not get a spot immediately or in a location of their choosing, "generally there are emergency shelter beds available."

Only one camp was taken down today, according to the city, but others remain in the area for now and continue to be serviced by street outreach programs.

Eles me investigaram também.

Another RCD unfit for appeal Cache Translate Page
The English Court of Appeal recently issued its judgment in PulseOn Oy v Garmin (Europe) Limited [2019] EWCA Civ 138. This case joins the relatively small number of Court of Appeal decisions on the infringement of Registered Community Designs (RCDs). The field of the design has varied in each case, but the result has been the same: the design was valid, but not infringed.

PulseOn (a spin-off from Nokia) and Garmin both make wrist heart rate monitors (WHRMs). The global market for WHRMs is forecast to grow by 13.5% per year (compound) over the next five years [presumably in places other than London - there are only so many WHRMs that a person can wear at any one time]. WHRMs have one or more LEDs on the underside of the device that emit light (typically green or red light) onto the skin of the wearer. The amount of light that reaches the photosensor is affected by changes in tissue volume caused by pulsating blood flow. [This technique is more correctly called photoplethysmography (PPG) - almost as difficult to say as it presumably is to achieve in practice].

FitnessKat could not be any more ready for this

PulseOn alleged that two of the RCDs for its WHRMs were infringed by various Garmin devices, including the Forerunner 235. The first design (comprising two representations of the device from different angles, shown above) is for the layout of a central conical raised platform on the underside of the device (to sit as close as possible to the wearer’s skin), with a particular layout of apertures. The parties agreed that the informed user would interpret the central aperture as being for a photosensor, and the three smaller apertures for LEDs. As is common practice, other visual features were disclaimed using the dotted line method recognised by the EUIPO Guidelines. The second design was identical to the first, except the raised platform is also visually disclaimed i.e. the design focuses on the apertures. [The words “technical” and “function” will no doubt have occurred to readers, but the trial judge held that although the raised platform and shape and layout of the apertures would fulfil a technical purpose, these design choices were not devoid of aesthetic considerations].

At first instance, Roger Wyand QC (sitting as a Deputy High Court Judge) found that both of the RCDs were valid, but not infringed. PulseOn originally appealed on four grounds, but attempted to add four further grounds of appeal orally at the appeal hearing. A bold, but fruitless, move - the Court of Appeal pointed out that this would have caused significant prejudice to Garmin. [Interestingly, the CoA seemed to leave open the possibility that PulseOn could have run these new grounds if it had given just a few days notice, so it will not necessarily be the case that an appellant will be held strictly to the grounds on which it first sought permission to appeal].

The Court of Appeal dismissed all four permitted grounds of appeal:

  • At two places in his judgment the trial judge determined that the relevant designs did not produce an “identical impression” i.e. not the wording of “different overall impression” found in Article 10(1) of the Design Regulation. This argument was potentially important because other grounds of appeal suggested (at least impliedly) that the trial judge had focused unduly on particular features of the designs, and did not consider the overall impression given by the designs. The Court of Appeal seemed to agree with Garmin’s argument that “identical” is an antonym of different, and therefore dismissed this ground.

  • The trial judge found that design freedom regarding the location of the LED apertures is constrained: where three green LEDs are used, they must be equidistant from the photosensor in a “horseshoe” arrangement; where two green and one red are used, two apertures will be close to and in a line with the photosensor, and one further away. PulseOn argued that the judge had failed to take account of two designs (which formed part of the design corpus) with arrangements of LED apertures that did not conform to the judge’s findings. The Court of Appeal did not have much time for Garmin’s argument that the aperture layout shown by the RCDs is optimal for a two green, one red LED setup (and the other layouts would not be optimal). The informed user is not taken to be an expert engineer, and will not be aware of all the engineering considerations pertinent to a particular design. Garmin’s argument would (undesirably) open the door to significant extra evidence in every registered design case. The CoA appeared to accept that the judge had stated the degree of freedom too narrowly in relation to this feature, but decided that this did not affect the outcome. The design corpus was replete with designs in which two LED apertures were placed on either side of the photosensor; at the very least, the informed user would attach little weight to this feature in forming their overall impression.
Garmin layout on the left; RCD layout on the right
  • The judge had compared the RCDs to enlarged 3D models of the Garmin products. PulseOn said this caused two errors: (i) the exaggeration of perceived differences; and (ii) the judge was erroneously led to believe that all the relevant Garmin products had a particular feature, when in fact they did not. In Pepsico v Grupo Promer, the CJEU underlined that a direct comparison between RCD and the actual infringing article is the default, but acknowledged that on occasion this might be impractical. The Court of Appeal held that this was one such occasion: the Garmin products are small and difficult to inspect, and the eye is drawn to what is behind an aperture rather than the aperture itself. PulseOn was also trying to have its cake and eat it by relying on similarities between certain features that are only really visible on an enlarged model.
  • PulseOn argued that the judge had attached undue weight to differences between the RCD and the Garmin products that were in fact determined by technical considerations, namely: due to the longer wavelength of the light emitted, a red LED will be placed further from the photosensor than a green LED. The Court of Appeal noted that the fact the informed user might guess the reason for the particular spacing of the apertures does not mean that they would conclude that the spacing was not a deliberate design choice. The particular spacing shown in the RCD was not found in the design corpus, reinforcing the suggestion that the spacing in question was deliberately chosen by PulseOn for non-technical reasons.

This judgment is unlikely to soothe the concerns of those practitioners and RCD owners that believe it is too difficult to enforce RCDs in the UK. PulseOn's design shared the fate of those in PMS v Magmatic, Samsung v Apple and P&G v RB: valid, but not infringed.

Is it still worth bothering to register designs? Undoubtedly, yes, even from a narrow UK perspective. The trade-off between cost/delay (small) and potential utility as - at minimum - a bargaining chip in settlement negotiations, can usually be answered in favour of registration. Certainly, RCDs can be invaluable for highly aesthetic products, where the degree of design freedom might be greater. But where the design freedom is highly constrained by technical considerations, RCD owners will struggle in many cases. In this case, a few relatively minor tweaks (longer LED apertures with "edgier" edges and closer positioning to the photosensor aperture) were more than enough to create a different overall impression. The informed user, ultimately, seems to care more about how a product looks than why it might look that way (at least if other design options are available).
