Crossing divides in Cyprus      Cache   Translate Page
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, but a community centre is bringing Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots together in the buffer zone between the two sides. Cyprus has been a divided island since 1974, with Turkish Cypriots living in the north and Greek Cypriots in the south. The two communities have been able to cross the island at police checkpoints since 2003, but memories of past conflict have held many back. However, one unique community centre is bringing people together right in the buffer zone that divides the two sides. Staffed by both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, the Home for Co-operation encourages people to meet and form friendships through shared interests, from djembe drumming to salsa classes. It hosts projects and groups trying to stop old prejudices taking root in the younger generation. It also provides a base for businesses and social enterprises, all seeking to melt decades of distrust. But how big a difference can one centre make on an island of one million people, in the face of political problems and personal trauma?           Pygmalion's Statue      Cache   Translate Page
Mythology is not lacking in tales of punished vice. But so too is it abundant with tales of rewarded virtue. Humility could as readily reward you with joy as Pride could punish you with retribution. This is the story of one such humble man who harboured a dream which came true.

Pygmalion at work in his studio
Painting by Jean Baptiste Regnault
There was once on the isle of Cyprus the seedling of a dangerous idea. In the city of Amathus there lived an accursed crowd, the Propoetides by name. A godless crew, drunk on the riches that the veins of gold in the Earth had bestowed upon them, they soon began to turn away from their gods. Numberless were their heresies, but one graver than all the rest. An array of women, the daughters of Propoetus, dared to deny the existence of the goddess Venus, the lady of desire. To Venus, this was deeply blasphemous. "With just abhorrence, and with wrath purs'd", the goddess was unleashed. But seeing no reason to inflict vengeance on the innocent pastures and cities of her former lands, she bent her anger on the daughters, the sinners themselves. Blasted from their mind was their remaining sense of dignity, honour and shame. Outcast from the people, and shunned by society the Propoetides took to prostitution, the first to do so, and the first to feel the blind eye of fellow men and women, "the first that sold their lewd embraces for gold... unknowing how to blush, and shameless grown."

There was, however, one man in particular who bore witness to their dread crimes. A lonely but noble spirited young man, Pygmalion was his name. A poor sculptor, Pygmalion spent his life crafting the forms of the divine, his chisel hewing perfection out of the coarse stone. While his craft was widely admired, and his skills with marble adored, he lived a life cut off from society. One day in Amathus, Pygmalion caught a glimpse of the apostate Propetides. Rarely entering the city, he was appalled at the heinous debauchery on display that day. Shocked to his very core, he resolved never to have anything further to do with womankind, and abhorred marriage, convinced that there was not one well spirited woman in all the world.

Pygmalion admires his work
Sculpture by Étienne Maurice Falconet
Wracked with hopeless longing, Pygmalion turned to his one true solace. Taking up his chisel and hammer, he began to hew a new ivory block. Tears came as he struck the matter, the artist carving out some new image of perfection. Working day and night, Pygmalion, fearing idleness lest it remind him of his plight, worked harder and harder, and shards of ivory flew hither and thither across the master's workshop. Scarcely could Nature herself have bettered Pygmalion's craft, so fine were his cuts and smooth the polished surface. Ever pious to the deities on high, the sculptor made sure that the summit of the sculpture was carved finely too, where man could not see but the gods could. "Pleas'd with his idol, he commends, admires, adores; and last, the thing ador'd, desires". At last, Pygmalion set down his chisel and hammer, and stepped back from his masterpiece. So great had been the sculptor's skill, he was taken in by his own art. Stood before him was the image of a perfect maiden, pure and serene, untroubled by vice, unburdened with guilt. At any moment she might have stepped down from her pedestal, so incredibly lifelike was she. Such perfection was there, and such pollution in the real world! With this realisation, Cupid's arrow struck, and Pygmalion could never look at his beloved statue with anything but deep longing.

The day soon came, however, for the feast of Venus on Cypriot shores. A sombre day to which quiet prayers were owed, the day was a chance for all Cypriots to honour the goddess they had once scorned. Gild horned bulls were lead through the streets, slaughtered and by the high altars they bled. Pygmalion, however, shunned the procession and came to the shrine of Venus, and bowed before the image of the goddess.

" Almighty Gods, if all we mortals want,
              If all we can require, be yours to grant;
Make this fair statue mine, he wou'd have said,
But chang'd his words for shame; and only pray'd,
Give me the likeness of my iv'ry maid... "
                   - PYGMALION'S PRAYER

Galatea born
Painting by Jean Raoux
Terrible was the sound of Pygmalion's grief. Mere silence, as a tear rolled down his grizzled cheek. But high on Olympus' lofty heights, Venus heard his sadness, and her divine heart was moved beyond pity.Hearing his prayer, and knowing the true prayer that lay in Pygmalion's heart, the goddess recognised that there was one in that accursed land who was a true and noble servant of Heaven. The altar flame roared, and the fire rose high, and Pygmalion leapt back, suddenly afraid. Daring to hope, longing perhaps, he dashed back home. There she was still, in harmony, glazed eyes and fixed stare, his beloved statue. So afire was Pygmalion, he ran to embrace the statue. Feeling at first the cold hard ivory he despaired. But swiftly did his despair turn to ecstasy. For at his touch, he felt the ivory soften, saw the whiteness lessen, the cold white lips redden, the coldness warm. The Blessing of Venus passed to the statue, as the goddess's gift was bestowed upon humble Pygmalion. Ivory no more, but living flesh. Stony silence no more, but beating pulse. Frozen stance no more, but animated form. The transformation complete, Pygmalion and his statue stared at each other, robbed of words. Barely a moment of tranquillity passed before each ran to embrace the other, and Venus smiled. Pygmalion, his deepest wish granted, gave the woman a name, Galatea. The two were wed, and scarcely has such devotion been seen among the domains of men. Pygmalion and Galatea had a son, Paphos, and the House of Pygmalion lived a life of joy 'till the end of days.

North Cyprus: The country that doesn't exist

CP of Greece, We denounce the imperialist intervention in Venezuela. Solidarity with the Venezuelan People!      Cache   Translate Page

We, Communist and Workers Party of the world, decisively denounce the imperialist plans, the undermining tactics and the menaces unleashed by the USA, the EU and their allied governments in Latin America, aiming at overthrowing the legally elected President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro; at subjugating the people of the country into their imperialist interests; and at looting the country’s wealth-producing resources.
After the failed provocation prepared by the USA using the imperialists’ puppet Guaidó on February 23rd in the Colombian borders, under the pretext of “humanitarian aid”, new scenarios are promoted for a coup or even an imperialist military attack, while simultaneously they continue the effort to organize more provocations that will give a pretext for the escalation of the intervention.
We strongly condemn every coup and imperialist military attack scenario of the USA and of their allies!
We decisively state that they will find against them not only the people of Venezuela but also the Communist and Workers Parties, the working class’ and people’s movement all around the world!
We vehemently condemn the statements of John Bolton, National Security Advisor of the USA, according to which the government of the USA follows the Monroe Doctrine that considers the whole of Latin America as their exclusive zone of interest.
Latin America belongs to its peoples!
Loyal to the principles of Proletarian Internationalism we express our solidarity with the people of Venezuela; only the people of Venezuela have the capacity to decide on the internal affairs of its country. We express our solidarity with the Communist Party of Venezuela, the Communist Youth of Venezuela and other Venezuelan anti-imperialist forces that struggle under difficult conditions to defend the people’s interests.

Naked Prince Harry pictured cavorting with nude girl in VIP suite during raucous Vegas holiday      Cache   Translate Page

  • The Prince is shown in several pictures completely naked after a game of strip billiards with at least one girl
  • Hiding his modesty with his hands, the mystery nude young woman hides behind him in pictures on the US website TMZ
  • Another snap shows him bear hugging a naked woman with his bare bottom facing the camera
  • Prince is on a trip to Vegas to recuperate after the Olympics
  • Clarence House confirm to MailOnline that the pictures are genuine
  • Harry is now on his way back to Britain

Prince Harry was today flying back to the UK to face a firestorm over explicit photographs showing him cavorting naked with a mystery woman in a Las Vegas hotel room.
The third in line to the throne has been accused of bringing the Royal Family into global disrepute after the pictures were leaked to a US website.
The grainy shots, taken on a fellow reveller’s mobile phone, show the Queen’s grandson stark naked – apart from a distinctive thong necklace – playing a game of ‘naked billiards’ in his high rollers’ suite at the five-star Wynn Hotel.

In one picture the prince can be seen cupping his hands around his groin in a fruitless bid to preserve his modesty as the dark-haired girl hides behind him.
He can then be seen bear hugging a nude girl by the side of the pool table as other partygoers look on.

THE CONTROVERSIAL LIFE AND TIMES OF PRINCE HARRY

The prince’s advisors at St James’s Palace were this morning locked in meetings about how best to handle the scandal as Harry flew back to Britain to resume his military duties following his 10-day break.
However senior royal sources made clear to MailOnline that the prince was in his hotel suite on a private holiday and had expected a 'reasonable degree of privacy.'
Another source close to the prince added: ‘Harry has always been exuberant and it's just the way he lets off steam.'

He could face a meeting with his Army superiors when he returns later today. Their rules state that 'social misbehaviour' is not acceptable, especially if it tarnishes the reputation of Britain's armed forces.
Any protestations are, however, unlikely to cut much ice with members of the public, shocked by the prince’s apparent lack of caution.
It is understood that the revellers present were members of the public the prince had met on his trip to Sin City and invited back to his room to ‘continue the party’.
American website TMZ, who have published the pictures, say the 'raucous party' happened after the prince and his friends made friends with 'a bunch of hot chicks'.

The group then went back to his huge suite, with a pool table, and they decided to play a strip version of the game which quickly ended in full nudity for Harry and at least one other mystery woman.

Harry checked into the suite at the five-star Wynn hotel and casino last week for some ‘full-on partying’, as the prince told one fellow guest.
The room has its own butler, games room including a pool table and private driveway.
The scandal also makes a mockery of his British tax-payer funded, round-the-clock, police protection team.
While the Scotland Yard officers – at least two of which have accompanied Harry on holiday – are not there to act as the prince’s moral compass, questions are bound to be asked at the highest level as to why they did not prevent the partygoers from at least taking photographs of his antics.

Former head of royal protection officer at the Met, Dai Davies, admitted it could be difficult to keep a handle on Harry, who he described as a 'lovely man' but 'a nightmare' to control sometimes.

'We're paying huge amounts of money for this young man to be followed everywhere he goes by security,' he told the Telegraph.

'He's a young man with lots of testosterone but there is a balance and occasionally that balance slips.'

The latest incident to involve the party-loving prince has come as a huge disappointment to palace advisors who had been buoyed by Harry’s growing maturity.
Earlier this year the prince, who turns 28 next month, undertook his first official foreign tour on behalf of the Queen and charmed statesmen and members of the public alike from The Bahamas to Brazil.
The trip was deemed such a success that there was already talk of another trip next year if his military commitments permitted.
As a result the prince was also given several major roles at the London Olympics – including a position as official Team GB Ambassador and standing in for the Queen at the high-profile closing ceremony.
He has also won plaudits for his support of injured servicemen and women and even took part in a televised fund-raising trek to the North Pole on their behalf.
With his grandfather, Prince Philip, recently hospitalised for the third time in just eight months - putting even more pressure on the younger members of the family to take on royal duties - it will be difficult for St James’s Palace to shrug this off as mere high jinks.

It came as several stories about the Prince's trip to Vegas emerged since he arrived last week, including several other images of him partying with his top off.

Harry even challenged swimming ace Ryan Lochte to a race after bumping into him in the VIP section of the Wynn Hotel’s XS nightclub in Las Vegas on Sunday.
Lochte, who was in Las Vegas celebrating his 28th birthday, told the Mail in a statement: ‘It was really fun swimming against Prince Harry. He’s a great guy, and it was a huge honor [sic] to meet him.
‘I was surprised that he challenged me actually. I didn’t know if he had any skills in the pool, but I definitely wasn’t going to take it easy on him!
‘He was a great competitor but in the end it was Team USA all the way to the wall!! Next time I’m in the UK it’d be fun to challenge him to something on his own turf.’
Harry even managed to beat Usain Bolt in a 20-yard dash earlier this year – by distracting him at the start.
And earlier that day, Harry had found himself surrounded by a gaggle of leggy lovelies who had made a bee-line for Las Vegas’s Encore Beach Club as news spread that the playboy prince was in town.

The prince had been filmed enjoying the poolside entertainment at the MGM Grand hotel and throwing a lingering glance towards one of the stunning bikini-clad women by a camera from television station 'Extra'

Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte celebrates his success
High jinks: Earlier this week Harry, left, challenged gold medal-winner Ryan Lochte to a race in the pool of Vegas nightclub XS - and unsurprisingly was beaten by the Olympic champion
In white fedora and red floral shorts, 27-year-old Harry lapped up the attention of his new fan club on the latest leg of what has been dubbed his ‘endless summer’ before returning to the front line as a helicopter pilot.
He also lapped up copious amounts of his favourite Grey Goose vodka as well as some of the many cocktails on offer in Sin City.

Days after the London Olympics, at which he was an official ambassador for Team GB, Harry jetted out to the US for a little ‘rest and recreation’.
This took him to Vegas at the weekend, accompanied by two taxpayer-funded police bodyguards and his best friend, Tom ‘Skippy’ Inskip.
The group were seen playing the dice game craps, to the cheering and whooping of their fellow gamblers.
The following day Harry and Co headed off to a £950-a-day poolside bungalow at another Las Vegas landmark, the MGM Grand.
The hotel hosts raucous alcohol-fuelled parties four times a week under the brand ‘Wet Republic’, which attract up to 1,600 revellers to its two giant saltwater pools.

At 3am, bare-chested but still in his jeans, the prince enthusiastically threw himself into the club’s huge open-air pool.

Victory against Bolt
Victory: When faced with a race against Usain Bolt, Prince Harry knew there was only one way he could ever win. Cheat

He was joined by the fully-clothed swimmer as friends attempted to carve a path through the pool, which was full of bikini-clad girls.

Footage shot on a mobile phone shows Lochte, who won five gold medals in London, theatrically counting to three on one hand as he gives Harry a head start before heading off in hot pursuit.
Strangely – not least because he boasts several world records – Lochte only just beat the prince.
The truth, however, was revealed by another partygoer on Twitter, who said a fellow reveller had grabbed hold of Lochte’s legs as he kicked off for the one-length race. The tactic didn’t quite pay off – though some insisted it was Harry who won.

Outside Harry’s bungalow was a private Jacuzzi from which the prince and his group chatted to a group of girls who had taken the cabana next door and ordered drinks from a menu boasting £65 pitchers of ‘dragonberry’ mojitos.
Just a few bungalows down was singer Jennifer Lopez, 43, and her dancer toyboy Casper Smart, 25, although it is understood they did not meet the prince.

At one point Harry borrowed a red singlet from the ‘bachelorette’ (an America term for hen party) girls next door and jumped on a friend’s shoulders, waving his hands in the air.

‘They had a blow-up whale in their area and were just fooling around, having some drinks and enjoying themselves,’ an onlooker said.

The excited ladies couldn’t resist taking to Twitter, posting pictures of them posing with the prince alongside giggly accounts of what a ‘gentleman’ he was.
One member of staff also admitted having ‘creepily’ kept the water bottle from which he had drunk.
The following day the group were in the water again, this time at the 60,000 square foot Encore Beach Club for another ‘adult pool party’, taking a bungalow with its own infinity hot tub.
The entertainment was rounded off with a visit to the resort’s XS nightclub where other VIP guests included US Olympic champion swimmer Ryan Lochte.
Harry has recently re-trained as an elite Apache attack helicopter pilot and completed a period of pre-deployment training with hopes of returning to the front line in Afghanistan in the near future.
A spokesman stressed that he was on a private holiday and was not entitled to any more leave than his fellow pilots.
He attended the Olympics in his own time and was not given any special dispensation by the military.
He is expected back in the UK in the next few days but will not attend the opening of next week’s Paralympic Games owing to his military commitments.

«To 3o No Finish Line θα ξεπεράσει τα 100.000 χλμ.»      Cache   Translate Page

Ο κορυφαίος φιλανθρωπικός αγώνας No Finish Line προ των πυλών

«To 3o No Finish Line θα ξεπεράσει τα 100.000 χλμ.»

Japan - Saga 1 of 2      Cache   Translate Page

This entire year there has been a trend of serious disasters everywhere that we go. Here's the list so far:

Mexico - Large scale drug war
USA - Economy crashing, government bankrupt
Canada - Hockey riots
England - More riots
Greece - More economy crashing & riots
Cyprus - Surrounded by Turkish battleships over oil discovery
Egypt - Mass protests & anarchy
Kenya - Officially at war with Somalia

This brings us to Japan and their tragic tsunami & nuclear crisis earlier this year. We nearly cancelled our Japan leg because of this disaster but it turned out to be an amazing country and a highlight of the year. We researched it on www.smartraveller.com.au and sifted though government food testing stats. We concluded that the country was safe, however, we shouldn´t drink any green tea which had a few positive radioactive results country wide.

Our first impression of Japan as we arrived in Tokyo was of awesomeness. These people were far more welcoming and friendly than they were in Hong Kong. Everything is extremely clean and we discovered that many people wearing face masks in public areas were not doing so because of pollution, but out of courtesy if they had the common cold or flu.

Japan has a whole army of 'Hoy Hoy' guys who were always ready to assist lost or confused looking tourists like us.

Everything was well ordered in this society i.e trains timed to the second, signage, shops, traffic and pedestrians. When ever something got out of order within an instant a Hoy Hoy man would appear. In a blur of finger pointing and 'Hoy Hoy' noises, all order would conveniently be restored.

With the assistance of the friendly hoy hoy staff we negotiated with the complicated train system and made it to the Asakusa Smile hostel. We went out to an amazing sushi train restaurant and checked out an ancient temple.

Along the way back we found a games arcade just the way we imagined, what with the flashing lights, crazy noises and cute stuffed animals. 'Japan invented that shit!'. This became a common saying of ours for the next month as it applied everywhere. There's heaps of stuff we like back home that Japan invented. Pokemon, dragonball Z, tamagochis, hot girls with killer legs wearing skirts, maaaaaaan, they invented that shit!! you see them doing anything whatsoever in a fashion better than westerners, yep, thats because they invented it.

Yep.. Japan invented that shit :D
At the smile Asakusa hostel bar we met super friendly locals Hikari, Saki, Miyako and Sara from China.  If you ever go to Tokyo we highly recommend you stay at the Asakusa smile hostel:

It's probably worth noting that Japan are an extremely disciplined and hard working race relative to western societies. In Japan no workers will NOT go home until the boss is finished working. It is also common for many people only to have 3 holidays a year. When you tell them you are staying in Japan for 10 days they cannot believe you got so much time off work. It is sad in one way, but it explains how they built up such a 1st class country given their large population.

Japan is know for being expensive but we quickly found the dirtbag option at the local 100 yen Lawsons shop. You can get anything for 100 yen ($1.25), all sorts of wierd pre-packaged meals, exotic seafood's, endless arrays of sushi and crazy biscuit ice creams.

When you are in a Lawsons it feels like you are literally inside a Pokemon gameboy game. There's flashy lights, cute beepy noises going off in every direction, attractive girls in strange attire and a bunch of strange energy potion's for sale.

All of this stuff is also readily available in the super vending machines strategically located EVERYWHERE. In fact in front of some restaurants is a vending machine, you choose your meal, it spits out a number on a tab and you go inside the restaurant to the counter and get your dinner. Ingenious.

We really had no idea what to do in Japan at first. A photo posted on our facebook page by George Ioannou (Steves Dad) provided the first idea. Snow Monkeys!!! This arbitrary mission to see the snow monkeys lead to the discovery of Nagano, Shibu Onsen and a local guide named Zeno. If you go to Japan you must visit this region.

Zeno

If you go to Japan check out Zeno's webpage. We can't thank Zeno enough for the help he gave us. He knows alot about the Shibu Onsen area and is happy to provide advice and tours. His tours are extremely convenient and well priced. This is Zeno's web page:

http://www.yudanaka-shibuonsen.com/

We left Tokyo for our rendezvous with the famous Zeno. Using our handy Japan Rail pass we boarded the Shinkansen (bullet train) and headed west at some 300km/hr. We arrived on shedule to the very second. Japan invented that shit!

Zeno took us up into the mountains to see an ancient temple in amongst a forest of cedar trees.

We then went to a real Ninja village. The sole reason for this visit can be traced back to my (Beric's) childhood obsession with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Real Ninja's are sitll in existence and train at this place.

The next stop was an exclusive tour of one of the best Bonsai gardens in the world. It is no tourist arrtaction but infact a lucrative buisness and Zeno had the inside connection to get us in. This garden featured the oldest two bonsai trees in existence:

These were at least 600 years old and passed down from generation to generation in one family. Some of the trees were worth in excess of $300,000 each and it was a huge privilege to see them.

This guy from Canada was doing like a 5 year apprenticeship in learning how to look after the bonsai's:

The last stop on our adventure was a Saki brewery. We tasted a variety of Saki's. Not to be confused with our lovely friend Saki from Tokyo.

That night we stayed in a traditional Japanese Ryokan in the Shibu Onsen Village which Zeno helped organise. It was autumn in the village and very lovely site to see after all the concrete in Tokyo.

There are many Ryokan's to stay at but the best is Matsuya. This is the link to their site:

http://www.yudanaka-shibuonsen.com/matsuya_ryokan
The owners were extremly kind and take great care of their guests. The hospitality they gave was above any other payed accomodation we have ever seen in the world. This Ryokan is very traditional and surrounded by temples and natural hot springs so you will get a real taste of Japanese culture.

The room was made from paper, we slept on the floor and shoes were absolutely forbidden. Steve and I experienced their first naked Japanese hot spring. More on these naked spa's in Saga 2.

Whilst staying in the Shibu Onsen region we ate lots of traditional Japanese food. I gotta say, Japanese food is easily one my favourite food's I have had around the world. Healthy and tasty!

In the Ryokan I (Beric) met his match with a fangel dangle highly advanced toilet:

<< insert creepy violin noise, RI RI RIN RIN, RU RU RU RU RU >>

I  sat down to go to the toilet, just like any other time in my life. However, this time was different. There was this crazy control thing with a bunch of buttons all labeled in Japanese. There was no toilet paper to be seen so when the time came to wipe I pressed the button with the image that appeared to symbolise but cheeks being squirted water.

ARRGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! I got the shock of my life man! This thing was super high pressured and the nozzle was precisely aimed at close proximety for maximum effect. Reminded me of a gerny. I literally scream out loud and started laughing uncontrolable. I couldn't turn this thing off. In attempt to relieve the laughter I sat forward monentarily and thing thing sprayed right up on the the roof. I had to do something quick, I hit a few more buttons and after some time it stopped.

The next mission was to flush. I took a gamble with a strange lever tucked around the side. To my astonishment the toilet flushed and a tap started flowing from above the toilet. This open stream of water went straight into a bowl with a hole on top of the toilet. These japanese people are ingenious! The water used for refilling the toilet is utilsed with a second purpose as a tap for washing your hands.

The second night we stayed at a the Yudanak Rhyoken. The owners here were also lovely and drove us all over to see the local tourist sites at no expense:

http://www.hostelworld.com/hosteldetails.php/HostelNumber.13178
Yudanaka Yamanouchi-Town Shimotakaigun
simaya@mvh.biglobe.ne.jp

We went up into the mountains to see the infamous snow monkeys. These monkeyes are unique in that they are the only ones in the world to habbitate in such a cold location. The main reason they are able to survive there is because of a series of natural hot springs. The crazy monkeys sit around like kings in this springs. They are completly wild and you don't always get to see them. When we fist arrived there were no monkeys to be seen for a while and then out of no where they all came tearing down from the hills and surrounded us. There's no fences and these cheeky buggers will steal your stuff if you turn your back.

 KAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

MEEEEEEEEE
 HAAAAAAAAAA MEEEEEEEH
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

(natural giser)

I was getting some close up shots of this big monkey. The monkey didn't take kindly. I was staring at it through the lense. In a flash it sprung right towards right at my face ad punched me in the side of the head. My reaction during this snap event was to hold down the shutter button so I actually captured a shot before and after the smack down:

Peaceful one moment

Yep he punched me good

I got the message..

You can watch these monkeys for many hours without getting bored. Their behaviours are very interesting what with all the fighting and mating. The alpha monkeys with the huge red ball sacks basically prance and around and beat the crap out of any monkey that doesnt scatter when they come close. Reminds me of high school. To end the shibu onsen adveture I went and sat naked in a natural hot spring on a big hill and watched the sun set over the autum hills. Nomad and Steve didn't come. They weren't overly keen on the naked spa thing. I'm starting to question how confident they are with their own sexuallity.

Next morning went to a town called Osaka to stay with some good friends of ours Satoko, Chisato, Samo and Toshiaki . From there we went back to Tokyo and hung out with Hikary. Hikary was kind enough to give us a tour of Tokyo.

Stay tuned, This will all be covered in the next blog Saga!

Can Goku hang on? will the battle be over?
or will plaent Namek explode and Freezers wrath continue to destroy our universe!!

Cyprus - Land of The Ioannou      Cache   Translate Page
A.K.A Land of the Steven

Well actually it should be land of the Stavro as Beric discovered back in Kaly. "Theres this crazy mafia guy, s.... st..., I don't know his name
Is it Stavro?
What how did you know?
Thats my name.
I've known you for 24 years and never heard that..."

Yep I was named after my Papou (grandfather) Stavro who moved to Australia over 60 years ago from the small mediterranian country of Cyprus. As is the case with many immigrants he was seeking prosperity and ultimately a better life than what was available at home during the time. He eventually moved Ayr where he met my grandmother and had a cane farm, then later moved to Townsville. Its interesting to think that I wouldn't even be here if he hadn't made that enourmous journey to the other side of the world all those years ago.

Cyprus is familiar territory for me, I first visited way back when I was just five years old. I only remember a couple of things from that trip, one was a nasty encounter with a prickly pear cactus. These things are covered in tiny sharp hairs as I discovered when I grabbed one back then. I knew better this time though.

In 2005, just out of school I returned on a 6 week cultural exchange program with a group of other Cypriot descendants from all around Australia and South Africa. This was my longest ever overseas trip (until now) and really planted the seed for more exploration and travel. We learnt greek at the University of Cyprus and toured the country discovering the culture. Then we all separated to spend time with our families around the country.
Members of  ''Team QLD'' back in 2005
I went back for another week on a family holiday in 2008 and for the first time discovered that there was actually some pretty good climbing around. I'm always keen to travel to Cyprus and with the added bounus of good climbing, the monkeys had to stop here on our trip!

Even with the previous visits I had not yet met all of my family and our first destination was Nicosia where we stayed with my Papou's niece Souli, her husband Andreas and their two boys George and Constantino.

We were greeted with a much welcome feast and this very appropriate doormat, Beric and I have been talking this sort of jibberish for years.

After weeks of solid climbing our first task was to crash and burn... An enforced rest day on the couch along with greek coffee and sweets from my Thea (aunty) Yourgoula were just what we needed.

For the first time in cyprus I had a car and freedom to go anywere I wanted. Let the arbitrary driving misions begin! We wend to Agia Napa, the most famous tourist beach in Cyprus and then Cavo Greko to scope out some potential climbing.

We spent some time in the center of Nicosia and walked along the UN patrolled border area.

Cyprus has seen countless conflicts throughout the centuries, mostly due to its highly strategic position between Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa. The Egyptians, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans and the British have all had power one stage. Even today despite a booming tourist industry and high living standards it remains under conflict.

In 1974 the Turkish army invaded cyprus and took control of the northern side of the island. All Greek Cypriots were forced to leave their houses and posessions and became refugees in their own country. Since that time the capital Nicosia has been divided in two and separated by a Green Line which is patrolled by UN soldiers. Evidence of the conflict is everywhere around the border with decrepit old buidings and bullet hole ridden walls. Nicosia is the only remaining 'divided capital' in the whole world.

The only country to actually recognise the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" is Turkey. The place doesn't even exist according the the rest of the world. And another thing, whats with the huge Turkish flag on the hill overlooking the southern part of Cyprus? Highly arrogant and disrespectful to the people who lost everything in the invasion.

At night Andreas would take us out on walks with his Cronies from the E4 Club, a group of crazy old men that like to participate in extreme sports. We like that. Andreas always had words of wisdom, mostly to do with why Nomad shouldn't be trapped with a girlfriend. Highly amusing for Beric and I haha.

"FRESH LEMON!" and "FIRE!" Andreas would yell at Beric randomly for some reason. Who are we to argue.

FRESH LEMON
It was Souli's birthday while we were there and we had a surprise party.

Even Dora the dog got in on the celebrations.

Andreas and Souli took us out for the famous Souvlaki at Bablyon Pub.

It was great to meet you Souli and Andreas, thanks for having us and I hope to see you again soon!

After a couple of days we drove to the other side of the country (about 90 minutes!) to the village of Pegeia where my Papou was born and most of my family still lives.

At the beach we met Andreas, the king of Coral Bay. He is down here 365 days a year and is always keen to show vistors around.

We went to see my Papou's sister, Thea Thespina and my cousins for lunch in the village. We feasted on fresh chicken and rabbit from the cages outside the kitchen.

While in Pegeia we were lucky enough to stay in my Thea Irini's apartment for the week. Thanks again for the wonderful hospitality!

Andreas took us on a 4wd adventure out to see the Akamas Peninsular on the far western side of Cyprus. This is where they used to run the Cyprus Rally before the whole area became a national park. We walked through Avakas Gorge and then went for a swim at Lara Bay

Andreas showing us his banana farm:

One night my cousin George took us to to see Stavro at his new club, Neos.

Stavro has a hotel, two clubs and an amusement park and is soon running for Mayer in Pegeia. He is married with two sons and a new baby daughter Irini and yet he still seems to have plenty of free time.

I was lucky enough to stay at Stavro's hotel back in 2005 and it was great to catch up again. Hope to see you in Australia one day soon!

My youngest cousin Irini:

After a good few days of rest we were keen to climb again so we drove up to a crag called Gerakopetra near the Village of Ineia. This area has spectacular views over the Akamas Peninsular and is a type of sandstone similar to the Grampians or Arapiles in Australia. The classic was Nomos Tis Varititas (The Laws of Gravity)

We spent a few days climbing here and at another crag in the Dhiarizos river bed. The theme of this place was Slab Action. Lets just say the angle of the rock was a little less than vertical and even Nomad A.K.A The Slab King was shut down. English people will bolt any featureless crap they can find apparently.

My Thea Maritsa and Theo Neofito have a citrus farm and no trip to Cyprus would be complete without a tour.

Theo Nick and his family in Pegeia

The Troodos Mountains are the highest point in Cyprus, reaching over 2000m. We drove up there one day and we found an totally different environment with large pine forests that reminded us of California. They even have a ski field up there. In winter you can ski and then be swimming on a mediterranian beach less than two hours later!

Wise guy hey?

That afternoon we visited Petra Tou Romio, the birthplace of Aphrodite.

They don't seem to approve of our climbing activities around here but Nomad and I tried to get to some rock.

The sea was a bit rough and we didn't manage to climb it anyway.

Meanwhile beric was kept amused collecting rocks... He spent nearly an hour looking for a love heart shaped rock??

He became highly protective of his prized rocks but eventually had to cull them down from like 30 to just four. Madness.

Near Pegeia in the town of Pafos there is a collection of ancient mosaics and ruins

We also found some Italian type ice cream.

On our last day in Pegeia we went to a soccer match with the local Pegeia team up against Pafos. We assumed this would be like any other stadium we just went into the nearest entrance. Rookie error. The stadium is divided into two halves and fans are separated by barbed wire fences to prevent riots... We were on the opposition side and wearing the wrong colours! We made a quick retreat and found my cousins on the correct side.

No blog would be complete without a photo of Beric and a random girl, so here it is:

We met these two at the good old Blazing Saddles Pub in Coral Bay.

On our last day we went to visit my friend Marios and his family for lunch. Marios had been living in Townsville studying at JCU for the past 8 years and only recently returned to Cyprus. At their house Marios had an amazing collection of insects and preserved animals. Marios' Dad, Aristos is an expert taxidermist and the collection of animals was unbelievable. One of the most impressive things we have seen in all our travels, it was like a private museum!

It was lovely to meet you Aristos, Chrystalla and Stavroula and great to see you again Marios!

The media circus never ends on this trip, check out this movie:

That pretty much sums up our Cyprus adventure, it was great to see everyone again and I'm sure I'll be back soon for trip number five!

EU agrees new legislation to protect whistleblowers      Cache   Translate Page

Proposed legislation will give much greater protections for individuals who come forward when they encounter corruption or illegality in the workplace.

The European Parliament and EU Council have agreed a groundbreaking piece of legislation that will help protect whistleblowers around Europe. The political agreement was reached in tough negotiations in the early hours of 12 March 2019, and is the first time that the EU will have dedicated legislation in this area.

The proposed legislation will give much greater protections for individuals who wish to come forward when they encounter corruption or illegality in the workplace and will provide both public and private sector employers with greater legal certainty around their rights and obligations.

“Today is a historic day for those wish to expose corruption and wrongdoing” said Nick Aiossa, Senior Policy Officer at Transparency International EU, “Whistleblowers in the EU, like Howard Wilkinson, the Danske Bank whistleblower, have spent far too long facing unjust retaliation for speaking out. It is quite an accomplishment that negotiations between the institutions have come to a positive end.”

While certain provisions can be strengthened, the draft legislation provides a strong foundation for potential whistleblowers to be protected under EU law. The directive affords much-needed harmonisation, as up until now, EU countries have had patchwork of protection for those who wish to expose the truth. Ireland, for example, already has good laws in place however Member States such as Cyprus have practically none. Transparency International says it awaits the publication of the preliminary text in order to scrutinise it more closely. However, one of the most crucial structural issues of the directive was successfully addressed. “We commend the EU in recognising that whistleblowers should be able to first report wrongdoing to the relevant law enforcement or regulatory authorities”, continued Nick Aiossa.

During the negotiations, petitions demanding that whistleblowers should be granted protection if they reported wrongdoing externally first gathered over a quarter of a million signatures. Over 80 organisations and whistleblowers themselves also sent letters to the institutions to demand a robust directive.

In the coming weeks and months, both the European Council and European Parliament will have to endorse this preliminary agreement. It will then have to be transposed into national laws in Member States. As this directive only relates to EU competences, Member States should use this opportunity to also incorporate national laws in the transposition process.

EU about to whitewash the world’s worst tax havens, says Oxfam      Cache   Translate Page

The EU was bold to establish a tax haven blacklist but seems now to have lost its nerve, says Oxfam.

European finance ministers look set to give nine of the world’s worst tax havens a clean bill of health when they publish their first annual review of the EU tax haven blacklist at a meeting in Brussels this week, says Oxfam.

New analysis by Oxfam reveals that the Bahamas, Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Guernsey, Hong Kong, the Isle of Man, Jersey and Panama are likely to be de-listed entirely by the EU. Some of them were at the centre of recent tax scandals highlighted by the Paradise Papers and Panama Papers.

Oxfam’s report, Off the Hook, also highlights that Cyprus, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta and the Netherlands would appear on the blacklist if EU member states were not given an automatic exemption.

Multinational companies shifted USD 600 billion (EUR 526 billion) in profits to tax havens in 2015 with a third of this going into tax havens in the EU. This deprives rich and poor countries alike of the money they need to invest in poverty- and inequality-busting public services such as healthcare and education. Women and girls are hit hardest, as these services are critical for them.

Oxfam tax advisor and author of the report, Johan Langerock said: “The EU was bold to establish a tax haven blacklist to help stop tax dodging. But since then, it seems to have lost its nerve. European governments appear set to whitewash some of the world’s worst tax havens. Recent discussions around the money laundering blacklist show how power politics and economic pressure can derail a strong, principled approach. The EU must beef up its blacklist or this whole process could be a farce.”

The EU published its tax haven blacklist in December 2017. It currently blacklists five small island states, while another 63 countries that have promised to reform their tax practices ahead of the review are on a ‘grey list’.

Oxfam analysed whether the promises and reforms made by ‘grey-listed’ countries meet the EU’s criteria for either being removed or blacklisted. This analysis suggests that the EU will add 18 countries onto the blacklist for failing to reform sufficiently.

However, the EU’s weak assessment criteria ignore many harmful tax practices, such as low or zero corporate tax rates, which means that actual nine tax havens will be dropped from the ‘grey list’. Political interference in the screening process also means that tax havens such as Switzerland and the United States are unlikely to feature on the blacklist – even though both should.

Oxfam also found that reforms introduced by some countries’ to escape the blacklist are ineffective or cause more harm. For example, the EU only considers tax incentives to be harmful if they give foreign companies or profits an unfair advantage over national companies or profits.  As a result, Hong Kong has escaped the blacklist by extending its harmful tax incentives to profits made in Hong Kong as well as overseas.

Corporate tax dodging costs France, Spain, Italy and Germany an estimated €35 billion in 2015 alone. If this money was invested in public healthcare it could cut the amount citizens pay for medical care by up to 28 per cent.

Oxfam is calling on EU governments to strengthen the blacklist criteria, ensure the screening process is free from political interference, and monitor tax reforms being implemented by ‘grey list’ countries to ensure they are effective.  European governments must also hold themselves to the same standards by which they are judging others.

“Harmful tax competition is increasing in Europe, but governments refuse to act effectively against tax havens within the EU’s borders. Years of austerity in Europe have widened the gap between rich and poor, contributing to increasingly polarised societies and plunging the EU and its member states into crisis. It is time for EU governments to put their own house in order”, added Langerock.

Another war of words between Turkey and Israel as Erdogan calls Netanyahu child-killer tyrant after Netanyahu said his statements are a joke      Cache   Translate Page
The latest exchange came after Netanyahu had called Israel the nation-state of the Jewish people, not all its citizens (mostly Arabs). That prompted Turkey on Tuesday to accuse the Israeli leader of "blatant racism." Netanyahu struck back in a statement from his office later that day: "Turkey's dictator Erdogan attacks Israel's democracy while Turkish journalists and judges fill his prisons," it read. "What a joke!" Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin was swift to respond on Twitter, accusing Netanyahu of attacking Erdogan "for exposing him" after the premier's "racist remarks toward Arabs and Muslims". "The apartheid state he leads occupies Palestinian lands, kills women and children and imprisons Palestinians in their own land," he wrote. On Wednesday, Netanyahu again blasted Erdogan in response to his latest barb, accusing the Turkish leader of committing genocide against Turkey's Kurdish minority. "Erdogan, a dictator who has imprisoned tens of thousands of his political opponents, is committing genocide against the Kurds and occupies northern Cyprus, is preaching to me, Israel and the IDF about democracy and the ethics of war," he said in a statement. "Erdgoan should learn from us how to respect all religions and uphold human rights." Erdogan in response blasted Netanyahu earlier today as a tyrant who massacred Palestinian children: "Hey Netanyahu, behave yourself. You are a tyrant, you are a tyrant who massacred seven-year-old Palestinian children," Erdogan told a rally of supporters in the Turkish capital, Ankara. Erdogan also referred to the clashes yesterday between Israeli police and Palestinians in Jerusalem, denouncing Israeli security forces for entering the Al Aqsa compound. "Do not provoke," he continued, before launching into what could be interpreted as an implicit threat against the Jewish community of Turkey. "Look, we have not oppressed any of the Jews in this country. We have not done anything you did to any synagogues here. Don't provoke us. We will not fall into this trap."

Lacson’s obsession with GMA bad for his and Congress’ prestige      Cache   Translate Page
BY RIGOBERTO D. TIGLAO       March 13, 2019

SEN. Panfilo Lacson just can’t stop his unhealthy obsession with former President, now House Speaker Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

He is damaging not only his prestige and credibility as the senator whose admirable crusade against the pork-barrel system started during the Cory Aquino administration.

Just to have a last pinch — the Pilipino word kurot is more precise — before Arroyo retires from Congress, Lacson is portraying the Senate and the House of Representatives as cheating gangs trying to hoodwink each other by changing the provisions of the budget bill they had already agreed on.

He claimed the other day, as the fanatic Arroyo-basher paper Philippine Daily Inquirer reported it, that the Speaker “unlawfully funneled nearly P95 billion in infrastructure funds to the districts of her allies in the House after Congress had ratified the final version of the P3.8-trillion budget for 2019.”

As that paper further quoted him, “Lacson said Arroyo’s acts clearly violated the 2013 Supreme Court ruling that struck down as unconstitutional the pork barrel system and the lump-sum appropriations for lawmakers.”

Straw-man
That’s a classic straw-man argument, and the reality in the 2019 budget is in fact the opposite. The old pork-barrel system struck down by the Supreme Court referred to the practice of congressmen directing where government funds allocated by the budget are to be used. In the budget prepared by the Arroyo-led House, where and how these funds are to be used are listed in some detail.

Lacson’s claim is as patently absurd, as a claim, for instance, that the President signed a Congress bill that was changed without the House and the Senate’s express permission. The House and the Senate, after the bicameral committee on the budget signed off on it, approved on February 18 the budget bill to be submitted to President Duterte for signing into law.

What the House simply did, which Lacson misinterpreted — deliberately or not — was to itemize the 2019 allocation for the Health department’s Health Facilities Enhancement Program (HEEP). This in fact ensures that the districts requiring such facilities get the budget for their program. Such itemization in fact is a practice, after the bigger budget allocations are agreed upon, and the Senate itself recently gave the House such itemization for certain budgets.

Why is Lacson confusing the country on this crucial budget bill?

Is he still blaming Arroyo for Manila Regional Trial Court Judge Myra Garcia-Fernandez’s order to arrest him nine years ago for the November 2000 killings of publicist Salvador “Bubby” Dacer and his driver Emmanuel Corbito, which made him live the hard life of a fugitive for 15 months?

Vendetta
Indeed, Lacson, as Deputy Minority Leader and Coop-Natco party-list Rep. Anthony Bravo claimed on Monday, is “holding hostage” the proposed 2019 national budget because of his “personal vendetta” against Arroyo.

Or does Lacson simply want to discredit Arroyo in the eyes of President Duterte who has made her his key ally?

For whatever reason, the reality is that accusations such as that of Lacson’s could delay the approval of the 2019 budget, which normally should have been signed into law in November, for implementation last January. The Senate is a gang, which gives full play to a member’s concerns, even if false.

And if the 2019 budget is delayed, government would have to use the 2018 one, which of course doesn’t authorize the use of funds for such laws passed recently as those directing universal healthcare, subsidies to farmers under the Rice Tariffication Law, and increasing the capital of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.

In his allegations that the allocations for the HEEP were bigger for Arroyo’s allies, did he make a list of such “allies”? No. He just made a blanket assertion.

Allies
He probably saw a budget for several known Arroyo allies and jumped to the conclusion that all Arroyo allies got bigger budgets. Did he include as “GMA allies” such representatives as those from Mindanao, who are allies not just of Arroyo but Duterte?

Lacson also made last December a similar leap to a false conclusion, without providing data, just to blacken Arroyo’s reputation. He announced, also through his favorite newspaper the PDI, that the infrastructure allocations for the 2019 budget for Arroyo’s Pampanga congressional district are among the largest for 2019.

That was of course patently false, and the data to show that it is a canard was available to anybody wanting to see it. In terms of ranking by size of allocations for a congressman’s district, Arroyo’s is in the 100th slot in a list of 194 representatives.

I debunked Lacson’s claims and even presented data to show how relatively small the allocations were for Arroyo’s district (P1.4 billion) compared to those for the districts of 99 other congressman, among them Joey Salceda (P5.7 billion) and even anti-Duterte congressman Edcel Lagman (P3.5 billion).

Man enough
Was Lacson man enough to admit he got his facts wrong, perhaps fed with wrong information by an overeager researcher, and which he was too busy to fact-check?

No. Lacson even had the gall to send a letter to this paper, signed by his incompetent media officer (since he must have felt that replying himself to a columnist was below his stature), published with the title “Senator Lacson seeks to set the record straight” (Dec. 22, 2018).

Did he present a list of allocations for each district to prove his allegation that Arroyo’s 2nd district of Pampanga had the biggest allocations in the 2019 budget?

No. He didn’t even touch on his allegations against Arroyo, and merely made the prose equivalent of mumbling generalities incomprehensible to readers, for example, that he merely “questioned not only the ballooning of allocations for infrastructure in some legislative districts, but also the Tulong Dunong program.. (blah-blah).”

In his letter Lacson claimed that “he already made clear he has made peace with Mrs. Arroyo, and that he has forgiven those who wronged him.”

That’s a bit hard to believe now, with his second false accusation against Arroyo in just a few months’ time.

Move on Senator Lacson. For the country’s sake.

Disclosure: I was Arroyo’s Presidential Spokesman and Chief of Staff from in the first half of her presidency, and then Ambassador to Greece and Cyprus from 2005 to 2010.
