Toxic acid poses an unnecessary health risk to more than a million in the Greater New Orleans region      Cache   Translate Page
From:  The Lens

By Ariella Cohen, The Lens staff writer |
The accidents unfold with eerie similarity: an unexpected explosion, a stubborn blaze, workers coughing and rubbing damaged eyes, a thick, ash-colored cloud of toxins racing away from the burning refinery.
On July 19, 2009, when a refinery in Corpus Christi, Texas, lit up, a worker was critically hurt and the fire burned for two days. On Nov. 24, 1987, an explosion at an ExxonMobil refinery in Torrance, Calif., shot a fireball 1,500 feet into the air, blasted the windows out of nearby houses and generated allegations of broken eardrums, back pain and lung damage.
The common denominator in both explosions was a toxic chemical many Louisiana residents have never heard of, though more than 3.7 million people across the state are at risk if a similar explosion happens here, according to company filings submitted to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.  MORE

Steppin' Out With My (LNG), Part 2 - The Rise of U.S. Feedgas Demand in 2019      Cache   Translate Page

U.S. demand for LNG feedgas has picked up in recent weeks, posting a record high of 5.6 Bcf/d in late February and averaging more than 5 Bcf/d in March to date, as Cheniere Energy completed the fifth train at Sabine Pass and the first at Corpus Christi. That level is nearly 1 Bcf/d higher than last month and nearly double what it was at this time last year. But it’s just the start. Train 2 at Corpus Christi was approved for feedgas just yesterday and Kinder Morgan’s Elba Island project in Georgia just days before that. With about 30 MMtpa, or ~4.5 Bcf/d, of liquefaction and export capacity due online this year, feedgas deliveries are poised to surpass 9 Bcf/d by the end of the year, with nearly all of that incremental demand coming online along the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast. The pace of this demand growth over the course of the year will come down to how quickly the anticipated trains can complete construction and testing, the timing of which can depend on a whole host of factors, including the extent of the repairs or modifications that are needed along the way, the timing of regulatory approvals, or the timing of gas pipeline connections to supply the facilities. Today, we continue our series examining the status and timing of LNG export projects in 2019.

The End of an Era      Cache   Translate Page
From the beginning of our marriage Tom and I agreed on one thing wholeheartedly. No matter what we did in life to serve God (for that was another definite for us) we would include our kids. We wanted them to not feel sidelined by our life's calling, but an important part of it.

When we returned from our mission to Mexico--where we'd spent our newlywed years--with a newborn and twin toddlers, we didn't have many options, but we tried to use our time wisely, even if it was simply sharing the message of Jesus with people we met along the way.

As more children came along, homeschooling got busier, and Tom's responsibilities grew in his work, we kept our eyes on the prize. Tom worked as a chaplain for the Seafarers Center on his one day off each week. I scoured the newspaper for volunteer opportunities and took the kids with me to deliver Meals on Wheels or pass out Christmas cards to nursing home residents.

From the very beginning we formed a tiny singing troupe and added kids along the way.

Our kids have had amazing experiences along the way because of our having taken them along for the ride.

When we got the call to Africa we made sure that any projects we took on would be able to include our kids. At the beginning it was working with a community school which was a great fit. When our work changed a few years later and became mostly adult education (Bible, health, leadership, etc.), we took our kids to volunteer at an orphanage so they would have their own work to do. This led to us discovering the great need for homes for babies and toddlers who've lost their mothers, and eventually to starting our own orphanage.

Our kids worked side by side with us from the beginning. Caring for sick babies, playing with the toddlers, teaching the preschoolers, offering cuddles and love, and just being all around amazing helps to us.

One by one our kids grew up (as they tend to do) and headed off to college. Six became four became three became two became ONE. And now Troy, our youngest, our baby, our last is leaving home and moving back to the States to pursue God's plan for him.

Troy has been a great big brother to all the kids

People often ask us if our kids will come back and join us in Zambia again. And the answer is YES--if God asks them to. At the moment they are fulfilling His plan for them, and continuing to serve God and others where they are right now.

We miss them terribly, but are so happy to have had many many years of family service together.

And now we are embarking on life as empty nesters.......

Mystifier
Black Death Metal

Поклонникам Mystifier пришлось ждать до сентября 1996 года, когда вышел третий альбом группы "The World Is So Good That Who Made It Doesn't Live Here", состоявший всего из шести песен.

В качестве последней работы с этим лэйблом Mystifier была записана кавер-версия песни "Leather And Metal" группы Poison для сборника "World Domination II".

В 1999 году Mystifier записывают кавер-версию "Warriors of Death" Sepultura для сборника "Sepultural Feast". Десятая годовщина существования группы была отмечена мини-альбомом "Demystifying The Mystified Ones For A Decade In The Earthly Paradise" с семью новыми песнями и подвергшейся обработке песней "Beelzebuth" со второго альбома.

2001 год ознаменовался тем, что белорусский лейбл Eldritch Music выпускает первое демо Mystifier "Tormenting the Holy Trinity" в формате CD, издание включает в себя 10 треков с демо, которые дополнены двумя новыми песнями, двумя каверами (на Sarcófago и Poison), а также рабочим материалом с мини-альбома "Demystifying The Mystified Ones For A Decade In The Earthly Paradise".

По окончании работы над этим диском (кстати, он получил название "Fouth Evil Calling From The Abyss - Tormenting The Holy Trinity" ) из группы был изгнан Paulo Lisboa, Beelzeebubth сменил бас на гитару, клавишами стал заведовать Leandro Kastyphas, а на басу стал играть Brunno Rheys. Encore Records.

The Queens DSA Helped Elect AOC. Next Up: The District Attorney Race.      Cache   Translate Page

QUEENS, NEW YORK—A city councilman, a state prosecutor and a public defender walk into a forum, seeking the socialist vote. This is not a joke; this is the new Queens. Since U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) toppled the old order last year, candidates for the borough’s top law-enforcement office—even those with war chests topping $1 million—now come calling for an endorsement of America (DSA).

In the first Queens district attorney election up for grabs in a generation, candidates have taken notice of the movement to end mass incarceration and are placing reform at the top of their agendas. In what was once a law-and-order bastion, candidates race to emphasize the crimes they won’t prosecute.

The 60 or so socialists sitting in metal folding chairs at the forum are not an easy crowd. Councilman Rory Lancman (whom the New York Times has dubbed a reform candidate in the vein of Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner) draws eye rolls for repeatedly beginning his answers, “This isn’t academic…” as he delves into policy.

When Tiffany Cabán, a 31-year-old queer Latina public defender and Richmond Hill, Queens, native, speaks, the mood shifts. Cabán promises to end cash bail, close Rikers Island, place a moratorium on new jails and decline to prosecute low-level offenses, such as disorderly conduct and trespassing. To public safety concerns, Cabán emphasizes alternatives to incarceration that address root causes of crime, including mental health disorders, trauma, poverty and substance abuse.

After the moderator-led questioning, DSA members line up at the mic. Should the police oversight agency, the Civilian Complaint Review Board, include elected representatives? (Absolutely, says Cabán.) Should Amazon HQ2 protesters face charges if arrested? (No, says Cabán, who holds “know your rights” seminars for activists.)

The Queens DSA electoral working group, the Queens DSA branch and the citywide leadership committee then considered both the forum and a lengthy questionnaire in deciding which candidate, if any, to endorse. Cabán, daughter of an elevator mechanic and a daycare provider, overwhelmingly won each round of voting. The only holdouts were those opposed to any endorsement in the district attorney race.

Whether movement groups should endorse candidates for district attorney has been the subject of debate. Some prosecutors who run as progressives disappoint once in office. In Illinois, Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx has been chastised by progressive groups for failing to fulfill promises on pretrial release and reduction of petty drug cases. “Wesley Bell in St. Louis County is ‘progressive’ because he won’t prosecute lowlevel marijuana cases, and Larry Krasner in Philadelphia is ‘progressive’ because he won’t prosecute any marijuana cases,” says Derecka Purnell, a lawyer and prison abolitionist. “Is this a progression from the types of prosecution that we saw during the War on Drugs? Yes. Is it enough to combat the inherently racist and classist everyday job of prosecutors, which is to put people in jails and prison? Absolutely not.”

“[DSA] members worry about giving credibility to any part of the carceral state,” says Sasha Weinstein of the Queens DSA electoral organizing committee. “But we respect the goal of harm reduction, and at the end of theday, we recognized the duty to use the tools at our disposal to fight the existing system.”

Cabán says she puts “the collateral consequences of incarceration at the forefront of decision-making,” citing housing discrimination, diminished employment prospects and trauma to families. “We should be doing everything we can to keep people  in their communities,” she says.

Over the past five years, places as far-flung as Corpus Christi, Texas, and Kansas City, Mo., have elected reform prosecutors. In Philadelphia, Krasner swept into office in 2017 on a campaign to end mass incarceration and fired 31 prosecutors in his first week. Under his reforms, Philadelphia’s jail population has dropped by about 30 percent. In Boston, Rachael Rollins won office in November 2018 on a promise to stop prosecuting 15 low-level crimes. In San Francisco, Chesa Boudin, a public defender and the son of Weather Underground radicals, is making a run for district attorney.

When Krasner announced his run to his civil rights law firm’s staff, they laughed. The police union president deemed the idea “hilarious.” That’s not happening in Queens.

“When DSA endorses in New York, we bring an army,” says Aaron Taube, a volunteer DSA organizer. That army helped power the victories of Ocasio- Cortez in parts of the Bronx and Queens, and state Sen. Julia Salazar in Brooklyn. But a borough-wide campaign poses a new challenge. “It’s going to be tough,” Taube says. “It’s a huge borough. … The challenge is not convincing people that it would be good if candidates like Cabán won, but that they can win.”

In advance of the June primary, the field has grown to seven candidates. The Queens County Democrats—led by former U.S. Rep. Joe Crowley, whom Ocasio-Cortez ousted—endorsed borough president Melinda Katz. Street outreach by DSA began February 26, as voters headed to the polls for New York City’s public advocate race. DSA volunteers used  the opportunity to collect signatures to get Cabán on the ballot.

Cabán sees a particular value in having DSA’s “army” on her side: “One thing I have learned over my time with them is they mobilize. Not just trying to share their knowledge, but more importantly, learning—asking the community what it wants and engaging in a dialogue.”
