100th Birthday:
Essay 2 of 6 on
"Fire Watch, July 4, 1952,"
the epilogue of
The Sign of Jonas

Part 1:  Valuing the Darkness

The Monk by the Sea by Caspar David Friedrich,
1808 or 1810, oil on canvas.
Alte Nationalgalerie

The fire watch is an examination of conscience in which your task as watchman suddenly appears in its true light:  a pretext devised by God to isolate you, and to search your soul with lamps and questions, in the heart of darkness.
“Fire Watch, July 4, 1952”
Thomas Merton

The world’s evil forms a current that swirls down a vortex into unspeakable horror, presided over by a Mr. Kurtz somewhere on the Congo River.  That’s the standard image of the heart of darkness, courtesy of Joseph Conrad.  In horror novels and movies, the climactic action inevitably seems to move toward either an ascent or a descent into a heart of darkness.  Monsters await there.  Biblical references to darkness tend to be equally negative:  “whoever follows me will never walk in darkness” and “the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.”

Manner of Wang Meng

Nevertheless, the journey described in Thomas Merton’s “Fire Watch, July 4, 1952,” the epilogue to his book The Sign of Jonas, is one that takes place entirely in the night and is resolutely affirming of the darkness.  Merton’s role as a night watchman, pursuing a solitary nocturnal trek through the monastery of Gethsemane, offers opportunities to him that are unavailable during the day.  He eagerly moves toward the call of the darkness, the silence, and the night.  If you want to follow in Merton’s steps, they lead into the night.

In preparation for writing this series, I read Barbara Brown Taylor’s excellent recent book Learning to Walk in the Dark.  Taylor and Merton are Christians who—despite the myriad Biblical quotes that praise the light and condemn the dark—hear something deeply spiritual beckoning to them in the night.  In their own ways, each of them finds God in the darkness, and each finds the experience radically different than worship in the glare of the sun.

Taylor’s book is engaging and practical.  It’s encouraged me to enjoy the night more—to venture out more fearlessly.  She cites many inspiring examples of spiritual growth via passage through darkness and talks of her own experiences in caves, in a blindness-simulation exhibition, and under the night sky.  By contrast, Merton’s “Fire Watch” essay is a window onto a soul crying for spiritual nourishment.  He breaks off from the pack (his fellow monks) to search for God alone and in the dark.

Although Merton feels the presence of God more strongly at night than during the day, it is a presence that offers few consolations and no personally satisfying answers to his questions.  His spiritual experience of God in the dark renders him simultaneously overwhelmed and frustrated.

“…in the nighttime You have confronted me, scattering thought and reason.”

and

“…You have descended upon me, with great gentleness, with most forbearing silence, in this inexplicable night, dispersing light, defeating all desire.”

Merton uses the silent hours of the night to meditate upon his own calling and God’s intentions for him.  As he silently moves from room to room, from the monastery’s basement to the top of the highest tower, he hungrily petitions God to come closer and to reveal more.

He acknowledges that he asks similar questions in the day but he expects no answers then.  His one hope of clear communication is the night.  Even in a monastery, surrounded by vows of silence, Merton experiences the day as full of the noise of human rationalizations and empty talk.  He turns to the silence of the night for truth.

The Lonely Tower, detail
by Samuel Palmer (1805-1881),
British, 1879, etching in black on laid paper.
National Gallery of Art
With the aid of Taylor’s book, I can identify at least three kinds of exterior darkness.  There are:
1) Pitch black:  The utter darkness of a cave, where you can’t even see your hand held in front of your face.  In the ocean, it is the darkness at the bottom of the deepest trenches.  In space, it is the unfathomable void between stars.
2)  Night darkness:  Light exists, but it is pale and the shadows are deep.  As our eyes adjust to the night, we become aware of moonlight, starlight, and all sorts of stirring life around us.
3)  The darkness of fog:  Light is deceptively dispersed through a seemingly opaque vapor, with the density of the fog obscuring even close objects from view.

The darkness discussed by Merton in his “Fire Watch” essay falls under categories 2 and 3, the night and the fog.  The darkness he describes is mainly a night darkness, full of life and open to the appreciation of attentive eyes.  But it is also like a fog.  One of Taylor’s key insights is that Moses meets God within a night-like cloud that descends upon Mount Sinai.  Merton directly refers to the same Biblical image as he steps out into the night at the top of Gethsemane’s highest tower:

With you there is no dialogue unless You choose a mountain and circle it with cloud and print Your words in fire upon the mind of Moses.
“Fire Watch, July 4, 1952”
Thomas Merton

Like Moses, Merton encounters God within the darkness of fog.

Moses receives the tablets
from God in the cloud.

Illuminated manuscript,

last quarter of the 15th century.

I was introduced to the idea of Summer Christians and Winter Christians through Richard Beck’s great Experimental Theology blog.  Originally proposed by Martin Marty, the suggestion is that most Christians naturally fall into either one or the other type of spirituality: summer or winter.  Summer Christians embrace the positive, anticipating or experiencing happiness in God.  Winter Christians are comfortable with engaging with God through complaint.  In Learning to Walk in the Dark, Taylor speaks of some churches that she says engage in a full solar spirituality:  “Members strive to be positive in attitude, firm in conviction, helpful in relationship, and unwavering in faith…  Who would not like to dwell in God’s light 24/7?”  These are the churches of the Summer Christians.

The two types are complementary, neither better than the other, and the world needs both.  It’s just a matter of temperament.  Winter Christians must arm themselves with flashlights and move through the night in a search for God that they fully realize may be futile.  They do it because they have to.  Thomas Merton, Barbara Brown Taylor, and I don’t have much choice in the matter.

The darkness beckons.

Part Two:  Christmas Eve

Winter Moonlight (also known as Christmas Eve), 1866,
by George Inness (1825-1894),
oil on canvas.
Montclair Art Museum

While passing through the choir novitiate during his rounds as night watchman, Thomas Merton smells the frozen straw and it triggers a memory:

…the freezing tough winter when I first received the habit and always had a cold, the smell of frozen straw in the dormitory under the chapel, and the deep unexpected ecstasy of Christmas—that first Christmas when you have nothing left in the world but God!
“Fire Watch, July 4, 1952”
Thomas Merton

Winter Moonlight, detail,
by George Inness (1825-1894)
Montclair Art Museum
Although this doesn’t sound like any Christmas I’ve ever known (where are the decorations, the presents, and the Christmas cookies?), it’s an enchanting reminiscence.  I might trade the decorations and the presents for a deep unexpected ecstasy.  Maybe not the snickerdoodles, but I’m willing to barter the rest.

Merton’s Christmas memory reminds me of this beautiful early painting by George Inness.  Originally called Winter Moonlight, the painting seems to have picked up the very appropriate name Christmas Eve about a century ago.  It resonates with the power of a silent night.  The clouds break in the middle to frame the resplendent moon, but its light is insufficient to remove the dark shadows that dominate the painting.  The figure in the middle, like a shepherd or king, follows the light even as it leads him toward the shadows.

As Merton wrote near the conclusion of “Fire Watch”:

Lord God of this great night:  do You see the woods?  Do you hear the rumor of their loneliness?  Do You behold their secrecy?  Do You remember their solitudes?
“Fire Watch, July 4, 1952”
Thomas Merton

These seem appropriate questions to ponder, while silently appreciating this beautiful painting in the collection of the Montclair Art Museumin New Jersey.

SIMBA IKITUA DAR...AUSSEMS MAMBO YAKE SAFI KABISA, AELEZA HAYA KUHUSU VITA      Cache   Translate Page

VIDEO: SIMBA WATUA DAR, WALETA MATUMAINI YA KUWAMALIZA WACONGO      Cache   Translate Page

SIMBA WATAMBUE MAPEMA KWAMBA WANA VITA DHIDI YA VITA      Cache   Translate Page

Bye Bye Love. Wonkagenda For Tues., March 12, 2019      Cache   Translate Page

Morning Wonketariat! Here's some of the things we may be talking about today.

There's so much fuckery in Trump's $4.75 trillion budget, we don't have nearly enough time to go through everything. Politico has a list of some of the winners and losers, the former being his golf buddies and Betsy DeVos, and the latter being poor people, the sick, and the elderly (thanks to massive cuts in Medicare and Medicaid previously sold as TrumpCare). WaPo notes that the administration is living in a complete fantasy believing that the economy is doing fine, counter to the analysis from every math geek who's ever used an abacus. Yesterday, OMB Director Russ Vought told reporters that it wasn't actually the Trump tax cuts (for the super rich) that ballooned the national debt, it was Obama. Earlier in the day, Vought appeared on CNBC to bitch and moan about the Mexican-Muslim taco truck invasion of the southern border, arguing that WALL was more important than sick, old, and/or poor people, and stated, "We're tired of being right." US TOO, BUDDY. Meanwhile, the GOP revolt over Trump's border wall has flipped Congress on its head as members consider measures ranging from overriding Trump's national emergency declaration, to limiting the presidential power to declare national emergencies.

In a bigass profile in WaPo, Nancy Pelosi finally said what's been hinted at for two years -- that she doesn't want to impeach Trump "unless there's something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan ... because it divides the country. And he's just not worth it." Some Democrats pushed back strongly on Pelosi's remarks, with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez noting Trump met "the Lindsey Graham standard" for impeachment "multiple times." In speaking with Politico, House Oversight Chair Elijah Cummings called impeachment a "political process," and added, "You've got to have bipartisanship. Right now you've got 40 something percent of the country pleased, I guess, with what the president's doing. I think Pelosi realizes this."

Dick Cheney ripped Mike Pence a new asshole at a private meeting in Georgia over the weekend at a forum for a conservative think tank, according to a leaked transcript of the event. The war hawk criticized the Trump administration's foreign policy as being more limpwristed than Obama, complaining that Trump's idea to demand protection money from allies "sounded like a new York state real estate deal." Pence responded by reportedly asking, "Who wrote these softball questions?"

In a rare showing of bipartisan rebuke of the Trump administration, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have invited the NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg to Washington to address a joint session of Congress later this spring. The invite comes as Trump moves to charge US allies protection money to the tune of "cost plus 50."

Massachusetts Democratic Senator and 2020 candidate Elizabeth Warren suddenly found her ads calling for Facebook to be broken up taken down by Facebook. Facebook issued a statement saying the ads violated their policy of using its logos in advertising. Though the ads were later restored, they kind of proved Warren's point that Facebook is too goddamn big. Politico is stirring the pot this morning with a story about Warren taking money from Silicon Valley employees and selling her books on Amazon ... over the last decade.

Senators Ed Markey and Josh Hawley say they plan introduce a bill to amend the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). The bill would reportedly extend protections of children up to 15-years-old, and bar platforms from targeting ads at kids under 13. Roll Call notes it's unlikely to become a law even though multiple states and the EU have already moved forward with strict data privacy regulations aimed at keeping companies from fiddling with kids' heads. Here's an example of COPPA laws in action.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand says her office was "thorough and professional" when it "thoroughly and appropriately" investigated sexual harassment allegations from a female staffer against Gillibrand's longtime driver and military adviser. In a brief scrum with reporters, Gillibrand said she has full confidence about the "professional and thorough" investigation that was now "thorough and complete." He must be a good man, and thorough.

Former Democratic Rep. Beto O'Rourke is headed to Iowa to help state Senate candidate Eric Giddens in a special election while simultaneously reaching out to former Obama people and courting activists. Beto hasn't announced #HesRunning (yet), but political wizards think it's just a matter of time.

Former Georgia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams clarified remarks she made at SXSW stating she hadn't decided if #ShesRunning in 2020, and said the possibility was "on the table." Abrams's initial remarks were that she kept a spreadsheet with gigs she wanted, and 2028 would have been the earliest she would run for president.

The Senate Intel Committee met with Simona Mangiante, the wife of George Papadopoulos, to ask about her old boss, ALLEGED Russian spy Joseph Mifsud. Tucker Carlson refused to apologize for sexist and misogynist comments made to a shock jock's radio show unearthed by Media Matters. Tucker likened the campaign to have him and Jeanine Pirro "You're Fired" to a "mob" in a defiant monologue, and stated he planned to "fight it" while crying on the shoulder of Sean Hannity. Media Matters later released MORE damning audio of Tucker where he claims "white men" were responsible for "creating civilization," waxes philosophical about THE BLACKNESS of the Obamas, and whines that Iraqi people aren't "human beings" because they "don't use toilet paper or forks," and that they're actually, "semiliterate primitive monkeys," Shortly after Tucker's monologue, Fox News host Brit Hume tweeted, "Doing well is the best revenge," and linked to Tucker's TV ratings. Meanwhile, Variety's Brian Steinberg noted Tucker didn't have many ads during his show, and that's not a good sign (for him).

Two of the most prominent NRA board members tell the New York Times that NRATV's hard-right turn into fear mongering of apocalyptic race riots, ALLEGED grift, and shady Russian fuckery has forced them to reconsider what the hell they're all doing.

UNICEF: CAR is most dangerous country for children      Cache   Translate Page

Bangui, Central African Republic, Mar 11, 2019 / 10:00 pm (CNA).- Despite last month’s peace agreement between the Central African Republic government and rebel factions, the country’s citizens, especially children, continue to face violence and famine.

"This is the most dangerous place in the world for children," Caryl Stern, the CEO of United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund in the U.S. (UNICEF USA), told NBC News.

Ongoing battles between Muslim and Christian rebels have taken thousands of lives and displaced millions of people since 2013. The Political Accord for Peace and Reconciliation, signed in Kourham, Sudan, in February, is the eighth agreement to have occured.

Because of the violence between rebel groups, the country of over four million people has a shortage of necessities. According to UNICEF, 1.5 million children are at risk for starvation, 950,000 children are without access to safe water, and, in 2019, 38,000 children under the age of five will suffer severe acute malnutrition.

The children are not only threatened by a lack of food and water; they also face the risk of being recruited as child soldiers against their will.

According to NBC News, rebel groups control about 75 percent of the country, while the government has authority over the capital and other small sections. The country is dangerous for humanitarian groups; 396 attacks on aid workers took place last year.

David Brownstein, the U.S. chargé d'affaires in the Central African Republic, has expressed concern that the unstable nature of the country will give ISIS the opportunity to take hold of the area and promote further violence.

"ISIS takes advantage of vacuums. Literal vacuums, security vacuums, governance vacuums, perceived moral vacuums," Brownstein said, according to NBC News.

In February, a peace agreement was reached after a lengthy dialogue between the government and 14 major rebel groups. The African Union and United Nations mediated the discussion. Countries such as Chad, Angola, Congo, Gabon, Cameroon, France, Britain, the U.S. and Russia were also involved.

Vatican News reported that, under the agreement, the armed groups promised to refrain from the destruction or occupation of public places and sacred spaces. The deal also required that arm groups not harm civilians or humanitarian workers.

Bishop Juan José Aguirre Muños of Bangassou said the agreement was reached under false pretenses - a means for rebel groups to gain more control of the resource rich land, according to Vida Nueva.

"Although they already have control of 80% of the mines of diamonds, gold, cobalt, mercury ... and of transhumance, they want more,” he said.

“It is a screen to hide everything from above and continue conquering the country and stealing raw materials,” he added.

Passing of a Congolese ‘Patriarch’      Cache   Translate Page

The human rights activist Félicien Tamuzi Talekwene Tafe died on March 2, 2019 in Bandundu city, western Democratic Republic of Congo, following a long illness. He will be deeply missed by Human Rights Watch, those who knew him, and those who benefitted from his many years of human rights work.

Félicien Tamuzi Talekwene Tafe, July 23, 1958 – March 2, 2019.

© Private

Tamuzi, 60, was the vice-president of the nongovernmental organization Œil des Victimes des Violations des Droits de l’Homme (Eye of the Victims of Human Rights Violations) and served as the general rapporteur of civil society organizations in Kwilu province.

He was a focal point of the Congo Advocacy Coalition, a group of Congolese human rights activists created in 2008 to strengthen human rights reporting and advocacy across Congo.

The eldest member of the coalition, Tamuzi was affectionately called the “patriarch” by his peers. A teacher by training, he was known for his engaging presentations explaining the human rights landscape in the former Bandundu province – including the current Kwilu, Kwango, and Mai-Ndombe provinces.

Tamuzi worked on elections-related rights violations and political repression, forced displacement of local communities, and abuses against indigenous populations. Most recently, he helped human rights colleagues better understand a spate of horrific violence in Yumbi, Mai-Ndombe province, where at least 890 people were reportedly killed over three days in mid-December 2018. Tamuzi also regularly proposed solutions to a wide variety of problems, including access to electricity, water, transport, and education for people in his province.

When Human Rights Watch conducted research in Bandundu, Tamuzi was an indispensable partner, making us feel safe and helping to organize visits to prisons and meetings with key people. It seemed that everyone in Bandundu knew and respected him.

Tamuzi was born on July 23, 1958, in Nsankiey village, Bagata territory, Kwilu province. He was the proud father of five girls and five boys, including five children with his first wife, Julienne Tabuku, who died in 1997, and five with his second wife, Yolande Kibabi. Tamuzi loved his family very much and was committed to the education of his 10 children.

Congolese civil society has lost one of its most dedicated activists. Rest in peace, dear “patriarch.”

WEIRD OMEN: France's Premier Psych-Garage Trio Serve Up Deliciously Dark Third LP, "Surrealistic Feast"      Cache   Translate Page

France’s darkest psych-garage trio Weird Omen return for their third album, a ten-track descent into their inner madness.

“You say that everything is fine, you say that everything is fine.” The couplet that’s repeated over and over on Earworm, the buzzsaw raucous early highlight on Weird Omen’s new album, but the paranoia is rising and the band are harnessing a hellish energy to send the listener through a swirling nightmarish journey of gothic psych garage rock.
Right from opener A Place I Want To Know, the baritone saxophone takes hold with a deep pulsing energy that grabs you from within the song and drags you into the dripping guitar and menacing drum beat. It broods in an almost Jesus And Mary Chain way, taking the drive from within rather than pushing it out and into the face of the listener like most other garage bands. In that way Weird Omen are quite a unique prospect in the burgeoning French garage scene. Theirs is an internal succubus put on show for all to see. A fuzz neo-garage psych blast.
Whether they’re spinning in an almost Cramps like groove (Wild Honey, The Goat), pulling at hypnotic chants over a fuzzed out guitar that rises and falls ( Surrealistic Feast), or sailing a Cthulhu threatened sea shanty (Collection of Regrets), the band are always at one with each other to push the songs in unison. There is no sudden jerk, no need for one to fly off in another direction, no solo that rises above the collective, and that serves to add to the density of the demonic drive of the band. But at the blackened heart of it all is the spirit of garage and rock ‘n’ roll. No matter how dark the sound gets, there is still a drive that grabs you inside to shake you up to your feet. It explodes more in songs like Out Of My Brian, which kicks up a raucous rhythm, an energy that threatens to explode throughout the record finally let loose. After all the chaos, they sign off with I Will Write You Poetry, a final swinging lament that meanders along in a fuzzy daze. Like being spat out of their own hell, we’re left to contemplate our return. And return we should.
On their third album, Weird Omen have created a sound that is at the same time impenetrable as it is spellbinding. Surrealistic Feast is a wonderful psych-garage record that, instead of looking to the sun and summer breezes, fixates on the temptation and draw of nefarious nights. Definitely one for the imps and ghouls of the garage world.

          Genocidios privilegiados.      Cache   Translate Page

ch'ero coi mercenari
soltanto per bottino
soltanto per denari

Ma ora che sono steso
guardate nel mio sacco
c'è solo una bottiglia
e un'oncia di tabacco

Invano cercherete
soldi nel tascapane
li ho spesi proprio tutti
assieme alle puttane

Evviva la morte mia
evviva la gioventù
lai lalalalala
lai, lalalala

Amavo un'entraîneuse
di razza congolese
però l'ho perduta a dadi
con Jimmy, l'irlandese

Salvai monache e frati
dal rogo del ribelle
ma l'ONU se ne frega,
se brucia la mia pelle

Se la mia pelle brucia
è perché son mercenario
ma il papa se ne frega
e sgrana il suo rosario

Evviva la morte mia
evviva la gioventù
lai lalalalala
lai, lalalala

Addio amiche mie
dai fiori nei capelli
addio dolci compagne
trovate nei bordelli

addio verdi colline
ormai scende la notte
i fuochi sono spenti
addio dolci mignotte

con le vostre guepières
ho fatto una bandiera
portatela agli amici
che invecchiano a Lucera

Evviva la morte mia
evviva la gioventù
lai lalalalala
lai, lalalala

Se rimanevo a casa
là nella mia Lucera
ora sarei arrivato
coi figli e la pancera

avrei la moglie grassa
le rate e la seicento
salotto, televisione,
mutua e doppio mento

Invece sono andato
in giro per il mondo
e adesso sto crepando

OKWI NA NYONI WAKICHAFUA VIBAYA BOCCO VETERANI LEO      Cache   Translate Page

KAGERE WA BIL 1 ATIKISA BALAA AFRIKA      Cache   Translate Page

HOFU YAONDOLEWA SIMBA DHIDI YA WACONGO      Cache   Translate Page

A random woman in line commented "Those things are all the rage".  An old (80+) lady with a strong accent replied, "Eeet was da rage when I lived in Moscow too!"  She went on to tell me about how she always wore her babies, and how it helped to keep them warm during the long Russian winters.

Babywearing's not trendy, it's normal.  It's practical.  It's beautiful!  Below is a collection of beautiful babywearing pictures from around the world and through the ages, from a friend's presentation to her high school Spanish class.  Enjoy!

Your son's penis, that is.
DaVinci's "Vitruvian Man" - Did you ever notice that he has his whole penis?

I know, talking about baby penises seems like a strange choice for a blog post.  I used to think that penises came in two varieties, circumcised and uncircumcised....but education is a powerful thing.  Now, I know that they only come in one style - Natural - and we, as parents, choose to alter what God or Nature or Evolution or The Great Spaghetti Monster created.

Why am I calling "uncircumcised" penises "natural"?  Most of the "intactivist" culture uses the word "Intact", which is also accurate, but really, an uncircumcised penis is exactly that - natural.

Just like women without breast implants have "natural" boobs, or a person has their "natural" nose before a nose job.   It's the way nature made it - therefore, a natural penis.  Does that mean a circumcised penis is unnatural?  Yes, it does.

I do want to note that I'm not anti-circumcision.  If an adult man wants to modify his body, that is his choice and I support it - just as I would support a woman who wanted labiaplasty, or anyone who wanted to stretch their earlobes or tattoo their body.  I am opposed to the routine circumcision of infants for non-medical reasons.

So, here are 50 reasons to leave your son's penis alone and not let a doctor cut it up.

1.) It's his.

2.) I've never met a man who wanted "less" penis when he was old enough to care.  Men tend to like their penises just the way they are.

3.) You can change your mind.  It's not possible to "un-circumcise", although there are men who have chosen to restore their foreskin later in life.  If you're not sure, don't decide at all.   It's a non-decision.  :)

4.) There is no medical reason to do it routinely.

5.) Circumcision isn't the majority for newborns anymore.  According to the New York Times, the infant circumcision rate is down to 32%.  That means 68% of your son's locker room will likely have natural penises.  If you circumcise, he will probably ask you why he's different from his buddies.

6.) Natural penises are easier to take care of during the diaper-changing years.  Just wipe it like a finger.  No retracting, no mess or fuss.  Compare that to having to care for an open wound in a diaper.

7.) You wouldn't cut your baby girl's genitals.  In fact, it's illegal - even a "nick" is illegal.  Male circumcision is a lot more involved than a nick!

8.) Many doctors and nurses refuse to perform the procedure because it violates the Hippocratic Oath - First, Do No Harm.

9.) It hurts.  A lot.  Really.  Don't believe me?  Watch a video.  With the sound up, please.  If you can't watch the whole thing, can you really ask your newborn to go through it?

10.) Babies can't be properly anesthetized.  An older child or adult would be given anesthesia and strong pain medication after any kind of operation, especially one on their genitals.  Babies can't have the same level of anesthesia and after-care medicine that an older child or an adult would receive.

11.) Did you know?  Infant circumcision rates are less than 10% in the following counties: England, France, Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Canada, Mexico, all of South and Central America, Japan, China, Russia, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Greece, Taiwan, Vietnam, India, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Australia and more.

Infant circumcision rates are higher than 10% in the following countries: USA, Israel, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Syria, Lebanon,  Yemen, Qatar, Turkey, Jordan, Philippines, Indonesia, Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad, Republic of Congo, Eritrea, and Kenya.

12.) Men with natural penises are less likely to experience Erectile Dysfunction as they age.  Translation - your son will be less likely to need Viagra when he's 55.

13.) Female sexual partners of men with natural penises are more likely to achieve orgasm during sexual intercourse.  They are also less likely to need lubricant.

14.) There are over 20,000 nerve endings in the foreskin.  That's more than in the female clitoris.

15.) The foreskin protects the head of the penis.

16.) The foreskin provides lubrication during sexual intercourse.  Men with natural penises are less likely to use lubrication during sex or masturbation.

17.) No major medical organization on earth recommends routine circumcision of infants.

18.) It's easy to clean when he's older.  Shower.   Besides, by the time his foreskin is retractable, (average age, 10.4 years old), you will no longer be cleaning his penis.  I hope.

19.) Circumcision does not prevent AIDS, or any other STD. Condoms do.  Having sex with one, monogamous partner and avoiding IV drug use prevents AIDS.  Why would you assume your baby's going to be a man-whore anyway?

20.) We don't chop off ears to prevent ear infections.  We don't remove baby toenails to prevent fungal infections.  We don't cut off body parts anymore when a wound becomes infected.  In the very unlikely event your son does develop an infection, we have antibiotics.

21.) Circumcision in the US began as a method to discourage masturbation, advocated by Kellogg, the cereal magnate, who also believed in the importance of daily cold enemas.  Really - true story!! He stressed that circumcision should be done without anesthesia so boys would remember the pain every time they wanted to masturbate.   How'd that work out?

22.)  Natural penises only "look funny" to you if they are unfamiliar to you.  Your son's generation will see them as normal.

23.) Women produce far more smegma than men, but we don't cut off their baby girl labia to keep things "clean."

24.) Your son will respect you for leaving the decision up to him, and for respecting his right to genital integrity.

25.) Complications of circumcision are NOT rare. Check out this thread on Babycenter.com (a mommy board, not a circumcision website) to read their stories.

26.) Most hospital circumcisions are performed by Obstetricians and Gynecologists, whose specialty is female reproduction, not male.

27.) Circumcision is not usually performed in a sterile operating room, but in a dirty nursery or a side room in hospitals without nurseries.

28.) Circumcision makes money for doctors.  A doctor who performs circumcisions makes an extra $20,000-160,000 per year on the operations.  That's why they offer circumcision at hospitals - for cash.  They'll ask you if you want your son circumcised multiple times at the hospital: they want the money.

29.) Less than 1% of men with foreskins will ever "need" to be circumcised, just as the vast majority of women will never need a hysterectomy or mastectomy.  We don't remove tonsils or fingernails or anything else at birth "in case" it has a problem.

30.) Penile cancer causes 300 deaths a year, almost exclusively in men over the age of 70.  Infant circumcision causes over 500 deaths a year worldwide.  Circumcision does not prevent penile cancer.

31.) Babies with foreskins are more likely to breastfeed successfully.  Infant circumcision interferes with breastfeeding and hinders breastfeeding success.  Isn't breastfeeding hard enough?

32.) Fathers don't spend time comparing penises with their sons.  If your son does notice that his penis is different from Dad's (other than size and hair), you can simply explain that Daddy had an operation when he was a baby.  My dad lost half of his ring finger in an accident, but I was never bothered by having all of my fingers.

33.) Your grandfather (or great-grandfather) probably wasn't circumcised, unless you are of Jewish or Muslim descent.  It's a relatively new thing in the USA.  Abe Lincoln and George Washington had foreskins.

34.) Most circumcised penises have scars.  If you've ever seen a circumcised penis, you have probably seen circumcision scars and didn't know what they were.  Curious?  Click here for pictures (adult eyes please, extremely graphic).

35.) When erect, natural penises don't look very different from circumcised ones (adult eyes please)

36.) Babies have died following complications of circumcision.

37.) Babies have had the glans (head) of their penis accidentally amputated during circumcision.

38.) Female circumcision was legal in the United States until 1985.  It was practiced in the USA as recently as the 1979 to prevent masturbation.

39.) Your health insurance may not cover the procedure.  Medicaid does not cover it in 16 states, and many major insurance companies also do not reimburse for the surgery, since it is cosmetic.  If your insurance doesn't cover it, it probably also does not cover any complications.

40.) Babies are strapped down on a circumstraint to have the procedure done.  That is the most unnatural, terrifying position for a baby, who previously was all curled up and safe inside Mama's body.

41.)  If you believe in evolution, why are men born with foreskins?  If you believe in God, why did he give men foreskins?  Did they screw up?

42.) If you are Christian, your religion actually *forbids* circumcision.  Your son's body is a temple, and Jesus was the sacrifice to end all sacrifices - including the foreskin.  See this link for more info.

43.) If you are Jewish, you should know that there is considerable debate about the religious necessity of circumcision.

44.) If you do believe that your religion requires the sacrifice of the foreskin, your son can choose to sacrifice his foreskin in the name of religion when he is old enough to make the decision himself.

45.) The foreskin is fused to the head of an infant's penis, just like your fingernail is fused to your finger.  Have you ever pulled back your fingernail all the way?  Owwwwwwwwwwwww.

46.) Circumcision makes penises smaller.  Who wants a smaller penis?

47.) "My partner should make the decision, he has a penis/she looks at penises" is a dumb reason to abdicate responsibility for a decision.  You are your baby's parent, penis or not, and you have a responsibility to protect your child from harm.  Victims of FGM (aka female circumcision) are the most vocal supporters and perpetrators of the abuse.  Call on your inner Mama or Papa-bear and stand up for your baby's rights.  Make your partner watch a video with the sound on and convince YOU why they want this done to their precious child.

48.) You have seen an uncircumcised penis, and you probably didn't even notice.  Take a look at this (safe for kids) picture!

49.) He'll be in good company.  Check out this (in my opinion, mouth-watering) gallery of famous intact men!  From Elvis, James Dean, Will Smith, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jude Law and sooo many others.
 Jensen Ackles, my personal favorite.

50.) It's his.  I know, I said it already. but it's really the first and last reason - and perhaps the only one you really need.  It's his body, and unless medically necessary, it should be his choice.  You wouldn't give him a nose job without his permission, you wouldn't tattoo your infant.  This is the same thing.  If you really look at your motives, why would you want to take the risks?  Leave the decision where it belongs - in your son's hands.

Uganda: UNHCR Expresses Appreciation, Urges More Solidarity for Uganda’s Refugee Response      Cache   Translate Page
Source: UN High Commissioner for Refugees
Country: Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Uganda

Concluding a five-day trip to Uganda, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency’s Deputy High Commissioner Kelly T. Clements expressed appreciation to Uganda for its open door policy for refugees, and urged more global solidarity for the Ugandan people currently hosting more than 1.2 million refugees.

“I’ve been extremely impressed at how Uganda’s inclusive policies have improved the lives of refugees and the communities hosting them,” said Clements of her visit. “Uganda represents the Global Compact in action, but the country can’t do it alone. More global support is needed, particularly in the areas of education, economic opportunities and the environment.”

She visited refugee settlements in Adjumani, Moyo and Yumbe districts and met with refugee groups, district authorities, high level government officials and ministers including the Hon. Dr. Joyce Moriku Kaducu, Minister of State for Primary Health Care. She also met with Uganda’s First Lady and Minister for Education and Sports, Mrs. Janet K. Museveni, where she praised the national Education Response Plan, which fully integrates refugees into national and district planning in refugee-hosting areas.

Education is a major priority in the Uganda refugee response for 2019 and beyond. More than half of refugee children, and over one third of Ugandan children in refugee hosting areas, are out of school.

In Palorinya refugee settlement in Moyo district, Clements met with teachers, students and their parents and noted the myriad of challenges they face. She was moved by the story of a 22 year-old refugee woman, who committed suicide after learning she would not be able to pay school fees to complete her last year of secondary education

“We all want to prevent a generation of young people from being lost because they feel the future holds so little for them,” said the Deputy High Commissioner. “It is in places like Palorinya that more global solidarity with countries and people hosting refugees must be demonstrated.”

As part of a focus on education, Clements announced that UNHCR would re-allocate of 100,000 USD to ensure young students can continue studying in secondary school in the Palorinya refugee settlement.

The funds will cover school fees for more than 500 refugee and Ugandan youth who cannot afford to stay in school otherwise. This new support will also help to improve conditions in secondary schools and provide small, but critical supplies that can affect school attendance, like sanitary pads for female students.

In Adjumani, Clements visited a market with businesses owned by women entrepreneurs and heard from refugee and host community representatives. Education, health and environmental issues were the primary concerns raised during her interaction with the refugees and district authorities.

The Deputy High Commissioner’s visit highlights UNHCR’s priorities and needs for Uganda’s nearly 1.2 million refugees coming from South Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Somalia and Rwanda living across 30 settlements and Kampala.

Is Kagame Looking for An Alternative Route to Sea?

Rwandan President Paul Kagame's visit to Dar es Salaam, where he held private talks with President John Magufuli, in the middle of a spat with Uganda raises eyebrows. NMG

By IVAN R. MUGISHA

Rwandan President Paul Kagame was in Tanzania this past week on a two-day visit, seen as a quest to firm up relations with Dar in the wake of escalating tensions with Uganda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

President Kagame, who arrived in Dar es Salaam on Thursday, held private talks with President John Magufuli, in what is perceived as a quest to have the Tanzanian leader mediate in the security and commercial dispute between Kampala and Kigali.

The souring of relations between the two neighbours has been simmering for years now, and worsened last week when Rwanda closed the Gatuna border post.

In recent weeks, Kigali has complained that Uganda has been subjecting its citizens to illegal arrests and torture. Kampala had earlier accused Rwanda of transporting goods through the common transport corridor in breach of the provisions of the East African Community Common Market Protocol, and held tens of Rwandan trucks for weeks before releasing them.

Rwanda, a small landlocked country, is served by two major transport corridors — the Central Corridor that runs from Dar es Salaam through Tanzania’s heartland, and the Northern Corridor that runs from Mombasa through Kenya and Uganda.

About 80 per cent of Rwanda’s import cargo is handled through the Dar port, but its major exports — minerals, tea and coffee — go through Uganda to the port of Mombasa.

Oil and capital goods to Rwanda come in mainly through Dar es Salaam. It is this route that President Kagame is seen to be moving to secure, as prospects of undertaking joint infrastructure projects with Kenya and Uganda grow dimmer as relations with Kampala get icier.

Rail network

The planned SGR line linking Mombasa to landlocked Uganda and Rwanda has lagged behind schedule, largely due to financing constraints, doubts over its economic viability, and the high cost of construction and indecisiveness of some partner states.

The planned 1,500km railway line from Mombasa to Kigali was expected to be completed by 2018, but only Kenya has completed the initial Mombasa-Nairobi phase of the project.

Rwanda is part of this rail network, but it has more recently turned its focus to the Isaka-Kigali project, which is estimated to be cheaper than the Kenyan-Uganda route by about $200 million.

Rwanda consumes more than 200 million litres of fuel annually, averaging 20 million litres a month. In the third quarter of 2018, Rwanda’s imports from EAC partner states totalled $154 million, representing 20.8 per cent of all its imports.

Tanzania’s share of those imports was 24 per cent or third after Uganda and Kenya, who accounted for 43 per cent and 32 per cent of the imports respectively.

Ismael Buchanan, an international relations expert and senior lecturer at the University of Rwanda, said President Magufuli had maintained close ties with both President Kagame and President Museveni, making him a worthy mediator.

President Kagame was in Tanzania on the invitation of President Magufuli. He was accompanied by Foreign Affairs Minister Richard Sezibera, his Infrastructure counterpart Claver Gatete, State Minister for East African Community Affairs Olivier Nduhungirehe and Intelligence Chief Gen Joseph Nzabamwita.

“The presidents had a tête-à-tête and spoke mainly about bilateral relations and promotion of trade between the two countries,” Mr Nduhungirehe told The EastAfrican, without further details.

Intervention

Rwandan officials met their Tanzanian counterparts for discussions on reinforcing trade and collaboration between the two countries. The EastAfrican learned that no agreements were signed.

Talks between the two presidents are said to have also featured Rwanda’s frosty ties with Burundi.

Analysts said President Kagame is being tactful in seeking President Magufuli’s intervention in Rwanda’s developing crises in the region.

“As the chairperson of the EAC, Kagame understands that dialogue is important. So I believe he sees this as the right time to solve this problem, and Magufuli may be the right person to advise him on the way forward,” Prof Buchanan said.

President Kagame’s last state visit to Tanzania was in January 2018, when he went for a review of the joint standard gauge railway plan that is to run from Isaka to Kigali. Construction of the 571km railway line at a cost of $2.5 billion was set to begin last December.

In view of the recent developments, President Kagame would be anxious to get this project done soon to clear the logistical nightmare that would arise were Uganda to block goods destined for Rwanda from passing through its territory. In January, both presidents asked the technical teams to fast-track the project, which has been held back by the absence of a contractor.

Tanzania is expected to pay $1.3 billion and Rwanda $1.2 billion in project financing.

President Magufuli, who rarely travels out of the country, made his first foreign visit to Rwanda in April 2016, five months after assuming office, to inaugurate the Rusumo One-Stop-Border Post and an international bridge on the border between Rwanda and Tanzania.

Kabila's Party to Pick Tshisekedi's Prime Minister
The party of Congo’s former president Joseph Kabila will choose the prime minister and negotiate over cabinet appointments under a power-sharing deal with his successor Felix Tshisekedi, sources in both their parties said on Friday.

The two parties announced loose plans to form a coalition government on Wednesday, nearly two months after Tshisekedi took office in Democratic Republic of Congo’s first transfer power at the ballot box since independence in 1960.

The announcement suggests that Kabila is likely to remain a highly influential figure in Congolese politics, despite giving up the presidency after 18 years in power.

Clearly, considering the striking majority we obtained, the prime minister will be designated by the FCC

It will also further fuel the suspicions of those who allege the pair struck a deal to rig the Dec. 30 election in Tshisekedi’s favour.

Opposition candidate Martin Fayulu rejected the results as a sham, an assertion supported by Congo’s Catholic Church, which deployed 40,000 observers to the polls. African and Western nations initially expressed doubts about the outcome before accepting it.

Concurrent legislative polls gave Kabila’s Common Front for Congo (FCC) coalition 342 of parliament’s 485 seats.

“Clearly, considering the striking majority we obtained, the prime minister will be designated by the FCC,” Julien Lubunga, a Kabila advisor, told Reuters by phone on Friday. “The ministries’ negotiations are ongoing, and I expect a government by the end of March.”

Congo’s constitution dictates that the prime minister must come from the majority in parliament, but normally the president makes the final decision on who will fill the post.

Tshisekedi’s Common Front for Congo only obtained around 50 seats, making it impossible for the coalition to govern without the support of Kabila’s FCC. Through its control of parliament, the FCC can also maintain significant influence over the country’s finances and security apparatus.

The two leaders have met at least twice in recent weeks to discuss the power-sharing agreement, once at Kabila’s farm and once at Tshiskedi’s temporary residence in the capital, Kinshasa. Their parties issued a statement Wednesday saying that, to reflect the will of the Congolese people, they intend to “govern together as part of a coalition.”

Kabila wants to retain control over key ministries such as defence, foreign affairs and finance, a concession Tshisekedi’s coalition is not ready to make, according to officials in both camps involved in the negotiations.

“They will pick the prime minister,” said a source close to Tshisekedi. “And in return we have requested and are confident of obtaining the justice, defence, foreign affairs, budget and finance ministries.”

Murder, rape and torture — those are just some of the abuses United Nations investigators say were committed during massacres that occurred in December in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and they may amount to crimes against humanity. "The report details the horrors documented, such as a 2-year-old reportedly thrown into a septic tank, and a woman reportedly brutally raped after her 3-year-old child was decapitated and her husband killed," Ravina Shamdasani, a spokesperson for the U.N. Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, told journalists on Tuesday in Geneva. The investigators found that at least 535 men, women and children were killed and more than 100 others were injured in intercommunal violence in western Congo, according to their report , which published this month. But those numbers are likely an underestimate, Shamdasani said. "The number of casualties is believed to be much higher, as the bodies of some who died are believed to have been thrown in the Congo

Comment on Kabila a bomisi Chalupa, Félix o moni mutu na yo? Faux mutu moko boye! by kolomabele      Cache   Translate Page
@nick-00243.
