The United City-States Of America, Mapped - An Experiment In Redividing The Country      Cache   Translate Page

Authored by Nolan Gray via Medium.com,

From ancient Greece to Renaissance Italy to the Four Asian Tigers, city-states have always punched above their weight. They’ve driven culture forward, facilitated global commerce, and charged ahead of their nation-bound peers.

Indeed, cities  - and the metropolitan regions that orbit around them  -  make sense as a political and economic unit. The key services we depend on government to do, from building infrastructure to ensuring public safety, are mostly handled by cities. And contrary to earlier predictions, the forces of globalization and the rise of the information economy have only made cities more important as economic engines and innovation hubs. It’s no surprise, then, that cities — and their mayors — are increasingly finding their voices in a world previously dominated by nations and international entities.

Unfortunately, the way the United States is structured today undermines this trend by privileging states as the key political entity. State boundaries in these modern times are typically arbitrary and often no longer reflect any meaningful political, cultural, or economic reality. Some U.S. cities, both big and small, manage to straddle state borders (think Texarkana or Bristol) while others run right up to the state edge but sharply hug the border (think Cincinnati or St. Louis). And a number of states are inexplicably fragmented because their seat of government is very different from their most populous town (think New York City/Albany and Chicago/Springfield). This often results in excessive fragmentationunproductive competition, and a near total lack of regional land-use and transportation planning. We all suffer as a result.

Both to satisfy my own curiosity and set out a vision for what a city-oriented United States might look like, I decided to make a map that dispensed with the continental 48 states and instead divvied up the land into 100 city-states.

As a process-obsessed city planner, I started by listing the top 150 metropolitan statistical areas in the continental United States. This seemed like the natural base for any potential city-states as MSAs reflect economic integration. Next, I mixed in combined statistical areas, which factor together adjacent metro- and micropolitan areas. I cut the list to the top 100 units by population. (Congratulations to Lancaster, Pennsylvania — the smallest unit to make the cut!)

Then came the mapping. I used shapefiles provided by the Census to make “city-state cores” on a single map using GIS, a tool used for map making and spatial analysis. By using more data and selecting certain attributes, I assigned each county to a city-state core. To finish it up, I cleaned up awkward and nonsensical boundaries with some manual adjustment.

The final product was this map, and it led me to several takeaways:

The eastern United States is like medieval Europe.

As of 2010, the population center of the United States is somewhere in the middle of Missouri. It’s been moving westward, needless to say, but also south over time. This mostly jives with this map: The United States east of the Kansas-Missouri line is a dynamic hodgepodge of small, densely populated city-states. The economies and cultures of places like New York and Philadelphia, Charlotte and Greensboro, and Fort Wayne and South Bend will likely always be intimately intermingled. West of this line, excluding California and Texas, the United States is largely underpopulated, with cities like Denver, Omaha, and Boise playing an outsized role — economically and culturally — in their respective regions.

My home state of Kentucky is shattered.

Let’s face it: Kentucky is incoherent as a cultural-political entity. The Louisville metropolitan area and the northern Kentucky suburbs of Cincinnati are essentially southern reaches of the Rust Belt. The state’s east and southeast have more in common with West Virginia, including a shared Appalachian heritage. Western and southwestern Kentucky feel much more conventionally Southern. All of this is largely captured by how the state is divided up. Not accidentally, the only purely Kentucky city-state produced — Lexington — captures most of what Kentucky is best known for: University of Kentucky basketball, the first Kentucky Fried Chicken, most of the major bourbon distilleries, the Daniel Boone National Forest, and the state’s famous Bluegrass horse farm region.

Maine and Minnesota are basically already city-states.

Only two city-states capture the entirety of a current U.S. state: Portland, which captures Maine and parts of New Hampshire, and Minneapolis-St. Paul, which captures Minnesota and parts of Wisconsin, South Dakota, and three-quarters of North Dakota. Portland barely made the cut; in an actual fragmentation scenario, I could see most of Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine falling under a Boston city-state. Minneapolis-St. Paul, however, makes sense. Its influence sweeps across the northern Midwest, as evidenced in films like Fargo. Some western metro areas in New Mexico and Utah nearly made the cut, but their southern regions were nipped by El Paso and Las Vegas, respectively.

Some states would disappear entirely.

A handful of states in this new map are completely covered by the city-states of their former neighboring states. Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, and Vermont would all basically be gone. Delaware and Rhode Island both have great cities — Wilmington and Providence — but both would be unambiguously absorbed by their monolithic neighbors — Philadelphia and Boston, respectively. The upper Mountain West as well as New Hampshire and Vermont simply lack large cities.

City-states of tomorrow may boom at any time.

As states like Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota continue to experience explosive population growth, they will inevitably give rise to their own great cities. For all we know, Billings, Fargo, and Sioux Falls could emerge as urban powerhouses in the 21st century, not unlike nearby Minneapolis, Denver, and Salt Lake City did in the 20th century.

An odd oversight in our federal system is that it’s basically impossible for states to split, join, or shift around their borders. Outside of a few weird cases — such as West Virginia — basically all new states have come from newly settled land. As new city-states emerge in places like the Mountain West, how would they be incorporated into this system? Would the arrangement be capped at 100 city-states? Alternatively, could states combine as their economies and development slowly blends, as could very well happen with small city-states like Lancaster, Toledo, and Fresno? It’s a fun thought experiment.

*  *  *

In a time when we aren’t often drawing up new borders for established countries like the U.S., it’s interesting to think “what if.” What might be the political implications of a system like this? At the outset, a system of city-states could help to achieve economies of scale in providing local services like libraries and parks, saving taxpayers money while improving service quality.

But they could also overcome some of the prisoner’s dilemma problems associated with policies like housing, schools, and subsidies. In our current system of municipal fragmentation, it’s easy for NIMBYs (“Not in My Back Yard” campaigns) to block the construction of new housing in prospering areas and keep low- and moderate-income students out of high-quality schools districts. A unified city-state could overcome some of these issues, taking the broader perspective and equitably distributing the burdens and benefits of growth.

A city-state restructuring could also have deep implications for national politics. One of the key takeaways of the 2016 presidential election is the mounting urban-rural political divide, with voters in cities and the countryside growing increasingly disconnected and antagonistic toward one another. (At the bottom of this piece is a map of how the city-states likely would have voted.) Insomuch as a city-state scenario would bundle Americans based on broadly similar economic, social, cultural backgrounds, it could encourage both sides to seriously contend with with the needs and preferences of their neighbors.

Of course, at this stage, it’s all speculation. How would you have drawn city-state boundaries differently? What do you think would be the political implications?

Panthers to sign C Matt Paradis to three-year deal      Cache   Translate Page
The Carolina Panthers have struggled big time in the past adding quality offensive linemen in front of former NFL MVP Cam Newton. Starting Matt Kalil at left tackle is a prime example of this. It’s led to Newton himself suffering minor injury after minor injury over the past few seasons. In an attempt to rectify that, Carolina is on the verge of adding one of the NFL’s best centers. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the team plans to sign former Denver Broncos star center Matt Paradis to a three-year contract worth $27 million. That’s bargain-bin material for a 29-year-old player in Paradis who has started all 57 games in which he’s appeared over the past four seasons. The Boise State product graded out as the second-best center in the NFL last season according to Pro Football Focus metrics. On another note, this is a massive loss for the New York Jets and quarterback Sam Darnold. They were seen as the overwhelming favorites to land Paradis. The team also missed out on soon-to-be new Tennessee Titans guard

An Idaho-based Waxing Chain Is Marketing Itself to Trans Customers      Cache   Translate Page
BusinessBusiness, Transgender

LunchboxWax is redefining what it means to be queer-friendly in the grooming industry.

LunchboxWax franchise owner Joshua Collins and his gay business partners are leading by example with their outreach to the transgender community.
TransgenderThinking Out of the Box: LunchboxWax franchise owner Joshua Collins and his gay business partners are leading by example with their outreach to the transgender community.Jacob Anderson-Minshall

Getting a wax — especially in the more delicate regions — can leave LGBTQ people feeling vulnerable, particularly if their body doesn’t meet certain expectations or beauty standards. Joshua Collins, a gay man who co-owns several Texas franchises of LunchboxWax — a company hoping to revolutionize the waxing industry through queer inclusion — says the “sad truth is the body waxing industry, outside of LunchboxWax, generally will not service our trans community, or men from the waist down.… People are judged for being [fat], judged for being too skinny, judged for being part of the LGBTQ community, judged for the color of their skin. Enough is enough!”

Already queer-welcoming and body-positive, LunchboxWax expanded efforts to become trans-embracing last year by eliminating male/female gender checkboxes and gendered service options like “Manzilians,” and instead asks clients their preferred pronouns.

“There’s no reason a waxologist needs to know if you identify as male or female,” LunchboxWax founder Debi Lane says. “If there are special considerations regarding sex anatomy, there’s another way to ask that. This is about waxing a body part, not a gender. We also want to ask for preferred gender pronouns in a way that reflects the best practices to ensure our LGBTQ guests feel respected and valued throughout their experience with us.… We opted to make the changes across all of our franchises.”

Founded in Boise, Idaho in 2010, the waxing-only salon business now has about 40 franchises and continues to grow. From the beginning, Lane says she understood the business was about more than just “ripping people’s hair out.”

“We specialize in Brazilians — so it’s important to us to treat our guests with warmth and validity, acknowledging the vulnerability people entrust us with. My vision for LunchboxWax has always been to honor every body…. I think the LGBTQ community naturally responds to that.”

Waxing Poetic: Debi Lane (above) is changing the beauty service industry by prioritizing inclusiveness with LunchboxWax.

The company has also drawn queer entrepreneurs to the business, and they in turn provide LunchboxWax feedback about how to support the LGBTQ community. For example, Lane points to LunchboxWax’s Dallas-Fort Worth franchises, which are owned by four gay men and have been leading trans outreach in that area: “They’ve heard firsthand from trans women customers who had negative experiences elsewhere and appreciated the safety to be themselves... [that] LunchboxWax offers.”

Collins, one of the Dallas owners, says the four gay friends have known each other and operated businesses together for over a decade and were searching for a franchise to invest in when one was “blown away” by his experience at a California location. Collins says the others liked that “there is a soul behind the brand that resonated with us. One of the greatest surprises… was the knowledge that they believed in many of the causes we valued. It may sound cliché, but [Lane’s] vision is truly changing the industry.”

“Within days of opening our first salon, I was contacted by a transgender male wanting to book an appointment,” Collins recalls. “He was used to rejection from other body waxing companies.”

Moved by the man’s experience, Collins says, “As I read his heartfelt email and held back tears, it hit me — we need to do more than simply be an LGTBQ-friendly salon.”

That’s when their outreach effort began, and “the response has been incredible.” Collins believes the company’s decision to get rid of the gender box helps trans customers feel more comfortable.

“For those beginning or in the process of their transition, the gender check box is intimidating,” Collins says. “We do not need to know [our clients’] gender before the service. We [already] know each guest’s body is different… and our waxologists are skilled professionals who understand this. This is no different when it comes to one having a different anatomy.”

Trans, intersex, and gender-expansive people can all have bodies that look different or are unexpected due to assumptions about how someone of a particular gender should look. Collins says, “We embrace individuality and acceptance. We are all different, and we love that. We’re doing more than removing hair. We allow guests to leave feeling beautiful and confident.”

Sagachristian 03 At Boise Salon Courtesy

Saga Christian (above), is a happy trans client.

That’s something Saga Christian, a trans woman in Boise, was looking for. She says beauticians at other salons have asked her if she “really wants [her] eyebrows done that way.” It happened frequently enough that she developed a canned response: “I’m trans. So please just do my brows like you would any other woman. I want them to look feminine—that’s why I’m here. So please don’t hold back.”

“I wish I didn’t have to explain that every time,” Christian says. “But as I progress in transition and appear more feminine-presenting, I think I have to tell people less these days.”

Equally important was that she found LunchboxWax. “The whole atmosphere is super welcoming and relaxing,” Christian says. “I love how the girls remember your name and make you feel like a close friend. I love how easy it is to book appointments, and their monthly subscription service is convenient because I never know how quickly my brows are going to grow.”

“As far as I know, I was one of the Boise location’s first trans customers,” she adds. “I was a little nervous going in, but once I saw the rainbow sticker in the window, I knew it was a welcoming place. What I was most terrified about was my name because it hadn’t been legally changed yet and the name on my credit card didn’t match the one I made the appointment with. However, there never was an issue. Lunchbox staff asked how to pronounce my name, and that was that.… I [have] always felt treated like any other customer.”

          Watsky      Cache   Translate Page
Knitting Factory, March 14 While the beats behind California-based rapper Watsky's music are certainly worth nodding along to, it's the lyrics that put his tracks over the top. Songs like "Welcome to the Family," which opens the 2019 album, COMPLAINT (self-released), juxtapose the poetic and the pedestrian, one moment drawing an analogy between the body and a crowded theater ("When I don't keep my lids closed as the director flicks his wrist / The stagehand in the wing has got a silver chain he grips / And when he lifts it opens up the velvet curtains of my lips") and the next dropping the less-than-eloquent metaphor, "But I think every family is a butterfly / You know, pretty from afar, pretty gross up close." There's plenty of wit to go around on COMPLAINT, which might be what earned it top marks from Hamilton writer Lin-Manuel Miranda, who shared the album on Twitter along with a bevy of flame emojis. …

The Egyptian Theatre, Saturday, March 16 Here's all you really need to know about Piff The Magic Dragon: He'll take the stage in an emerald green dragon onesie (complete with spikes) at The Egyptian Theatre on Saturday, March 16, and he'll be joined by his co-star Mr Piffles, "The World's Only Magic Performing Chihuahua." Isn't that enough to make tickets mandatory? If not, well, it's probably worth mentioning that since appearing on America's Got Talent and Penn & Teller: Fool Us!, the British magician and his four-legged sidekick have performed across the globe from The Flamingo Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas to the Sydney Opera House, even opening for Mumford & Sons on a 2012 UK tour. Apparently, dragons and Chihuahuas beat white rabbits every time.

Boise Centre, Friday, March 15 Giant mining crater aside, Butte, Montana, is an unremarkable mountain town for 364 days of the year. But that 365th day is St. Patrick's Day, and for Butte's Irish population—the largest in the United States per capita—it's the only one on the calendar that really matters. Now, Boise Centre is bringing that pint-raising spirit to the City of Trees with Butte in Boise, a night of Irish revelry including a dinner buffet (starring corned beef and cabbage, cottage pie, Irish pub salad and pasties from Butte-based Joe's Pasty Shop. Plus, there will be suds aplenty, games to play and performances by The Boise Highlanders' pipers, drummers and dancers. If you're even a sliver Irish, this is the time to get your green on.
Sun Valley Film Festival      Cache   Translate Page
Sun Valley, Wednesday-Sunday, 14-17 The Sun Valley Film Festival isn't the country's biggest or flashiest film soiree, but that's okay—instead of competing with the big boys, SVFF has flourished in its boutique festival niche, catering to filmmakers, writers and well-watched connoisseurs. This year, the festival runs Wednesday-Sunday, March 13-17, and will bring in a star lineup to Sun Valley, including rom-com darling Meg Ryan, Emmy-winning Idaho actor Aaron Paul and directors Alex Ross Perry and Fisher Stevens. Not to mention, this year's film slate will include an impressive list of Oscar-winning actors and some of the most anticipated documentaries of 2019. Passes cost a pretty penny, but they're worth it—and you might even run into BW's very own George Prentice.

Minerva's Breakdown: Too Woke      Cache   Translate Page
Too often we hold our artists, celebrities, and entertainers to higher standards than we hold people who make our laws and run our government. DEAR MINERVA, It seems to me recently that there are no stars left who aren't getting criticized for something that they have been accused of doing, saying, or supporting. I can't even watch old movies without being disappointed in how backward things were. I feel too informed and too pissed off to relax. How can we continue to enjoy anything in the world when everyone seems to be awful? -Sincerely, Too Woke DEAR WOKE, The media likes to distract us with celebrities. Stars sell and there are a lot of people that enjoy tearing down others. What we lose sight of in all of this is that stars are still just people. We make them role models - something they didn't sign up to be. Too often we hold our artists, celebrities, and entertainers to higher standards than we hold people who make our laws and run our government. That's unreasonable. Just because someone can act well or sing on key doesn't make them infallible. We're just used to them bringing us joy in small servings. The best advice that I can give you about trying to enjoy old movies is to remember that if you look back at history with the eyes of today, you will always be disappointed. What may have been progressive and daring at the time could be perceived as the opposite now. Know your history, understand how slowly things change, and remember that people are people. Whether they are gracing the movie screen or bagging your groceries, people aren't perfect, including you and me! Have a question? Minerva's here to help. Send your question by clicking here.…

Alefort: Roll Out the Barrels      Cache   Translate Page
Alefort organizers say they've "changed up a few things" for their 2019 suds-fest. Now in its eighth year, Alefort organizers say they've "changed up a few things" for their 2019 suds-fest. In particular, they've included a new layout, a creatively curated accompanying food menu, a one-day Basque presentation and a specialty Alefort IPA from Barley Brown's Beer. Some Alefort favorites will remain, such as the Alefort Nail Pull and a list of pours from across the region. Alefort, located near the Treefort Main Stage, is free to the public. Attendees will need to bring or buy a reusable cup, and this year they will find beers organized by flavor and story rather than by brewery. For example, there will be the main Alefort Bar, a Process and Ingredient Bar and four additional bars organized by beer type: Big and Barrel-Aged, Hoppy, Lager and Wild & Funky. Each participating brewery will, in turn, be paired with a bar that gives them the opportunity to showcase their best beer in that category. Six cideries will also participate, including five from the Northwest and one from Vermont: Cider Sisters Cider, Finnriver Farm & Cidery, Meriwether Cider, Schilling Hard Cider, Shakasbury Cider and Summit Cider. Two—Cider Sisters and Meriwether—are based in Boise, and Summit Cider is from Coeur d'Alene. Alefort will also serve a locally curated menu with daily themes. Friday will be taco day and Sunday will feature brunch items. The highlight is Saturday, when all of the dishes will be Basque.…
Foodfort: Chef Bonnie Morales Dishes Up a Taste of the Former Soviet Union      Cache   Translate Page
In addition to the Eastern European dishes, "A Night at Kachka" diners can expect plenty of Russia's signature booze: vodka. Portland, Oregon-based Chef Bonnie Morales doesn't believe in culinary training wheels, particularly when it comes to the upscale Russian-style cuisine she'll bring to Foodfort, the tastiest branch of Treefort Music Festival, this year. To explain her philosophy, she told the story of a dish called "Herring 'Under a Fur Coat'" that she serves at her award-laden Portland restaurant, Kachka. "The reason I never wanted to put that on the menu, at least not to start, is that I thought it would be too ostracizing. It's a layered salad with herring, and herring isn't the easiest thing for people who are uninitiated to get into, and so I just thought it would scare people off," Morales explained. When the dish ended up on the menu, it quickly proved her wrong, racking up rave reviews and landing on lists like Willamette Week's "12 Wonder of Portland Food" and Eater's "Portland's 17 Most Iconic Dishes." "That to me was sort of a lesson for how I shouldn't take what people are going to like or not like for granted, or make judgements for other people," Morales said. "I think the lesson there is to just put it out there and see and let people make that decision for themselves, and don't dumb it down." That strategy has served her well. Since opening Kachka in 2014, Morales, a first-generation American whose parents hailed from Belarus (her maiden name was Frumkin), has garnered James Beard nominations for both herself and her restaurant, among other accolades. Despite her reputation as one of the Northwest's culinary giants, she's still happy to load up her car with pre-prepped dumplings, rabbit and pumpernickel for the 6-and-a-half-hour slog to Boise, where she'll present a four-course dinner at the Basque Center at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20, to kick off Foodfort 2019. The dinner is called "A Night at Kachka," so it's only fitting that Morales will pull dishes from the Kachka menu. They'll be served more formally than they would be at the restaurant, but the spirit of zakuski, a Russian term for a family-style table covered with hors d'oeuvres and vodka, will remain. "These dishes are all from different parts of the former Soviet Union," Morales said of the Foodfort menu. "...That wasn't intentional, but it just kind of happened naturally. And that's kind of how I grew up eating, just this very varied, sort of multicultural…

Storming the Forts: BW Music Guru Ben Schultz's Treefort Hit List      Cache   Translate Page
Readers should use it as a starting point and see where the festival's five days take them. Hardcore Treeforters know that no itinerary or schedule ever survives the festival. The joy of the festival lies partly in happy accidents and discoveries. With this in mind, the following list of recommended sets and acts shouldn't—and probably couldn't—be followed slavishly. Instead, readers should use it as a starting point and see where the festival's five days take them. Wednesday, March 20 • Noon, The Owyhee: Border Stories – Modern Imagination • 1:30 p.m., The Owyhee: The Human Library – Conversations Beyond Stereotypes • 3 p.m., The Owyhee: We Choose All of Us – Stories Toward Liberation It's fitting that this year's Treefort should start with these three Storyfort panels. Implicitly, the festival has encouraged exploration and open-mindedness since its inception. These stories and discussions concerning immigration, stereotypes and victims of violence should provide plenty of food for thought over the next five days and beyond. • 5 p.m., Tenth Street Station: That Was Epic – Stories of Failure, Folly, Fandom & F a.m.e To quote John Cleese, "And now for something completely different." Festival-goers seeking something more lighthearted than the panels mentioned above might enjoy these tales of triumph and misadventure told by local artists. • 7:20 p.m., Neurolux: ESC Dale Hiscock crafts intricate, winsome dre a.m.-pop with guitar, synthesizers and looping software that he personally developed. • 8 p.m., Knitting Factory: JPEGMAFIA(or 8:30 p.m., Grainey's Basement: CRY) • 9:30 p.m., Linen Building: CMMNWLTH • 10:30 p.m., El Korah Shrine: Lounge on Fire • 11 p.m., The Shredder: J a.m.es Plane Wreck Even dedicated local scenesters might not remember James Plane Wreck, which played its last show in 2014. Its raucous fusion of punk and country is worth revisiting (or discovering): Between Aaron Smith's sharply observed lyrics and Andrew Bagley's powerhouse drumming, this was one of Boise's best rock groups of that time. • 11:30 p.m., Linen Building: Doe (or 11:30 p.m., Grainey's Basement: Possessive) • Midnight, Tom Grainey's: Tylor & the Train Robbers (or 12:10 a.m., The Shredder: The Guardians of Virginity) Thursday, March 21 • 4:20 p.m., Main Stage: Liz Cooper & The St a.m.pede • 5 p.m., Neurolux: Lucid Aisle • 5:40 p.m., Main Stage: The Suffers (or 5:50 p.m., Boise Contemporary Theater: Tispur) • 6:10 p.m., Linen Building: Blood Lemon This new local rock group is a trio of heavy hitters: Finn Riggins singer-guitarist Lisa Simpson, Marshall Poole singer-bassist Melanie Radford and Tambalka drummer Lindsey…

Treefort Co-founder Megan Stoll      Cache   Translate Page
The Treefort co-founder on the past, the present, and why you'll need three pairs of shoes Megan Stoll was born and raised in Hickory, North Carolina, home to some of the nation's most famous furniture manufacturers. It's a mecca for people from all over the world searching for the perfect hand-crafted chair. But don't expect Stoll to be looking for a chair anytime soon. As co-founder and marketing director of the wildly successful Treefort Music Fest, she has to be one of the busiest people in Idaho right now, with preparations for the festival's ninth iteration in full swing. True, Stoll went to the University of Greensboro (in North Carolina), graduated with a degree in textile design and marketing and worked in design and architectural firms in North Carolina, Virginia, Florida and Oklahoma. But when she moved to Boise in 2008 her professional life took a significant left-turn and, as a result, she helped reinvent the Boise music scene on the grandest scale to date. It's worth noting that when you moved to Boise in 2008... The economy was in the toilet. I went to every architectural firm in town with my happy smile and solid resume, but they told me they were barely keeping the staff they had while trying to keep the lights on. I went to a temp agency which got me a job at the Idaho Business Review. I helped them for a while but got laid off in 2011. I was like, "Whatever." So, I decided to take advantage of what Boise had to offer that summer: floating the river and seeing some concerts. That's when I first met Eric Gilbert, who was booking many of those shows. He said, "Wouldn't it be cool to start an amazing festival right here in Boise? Say, don't you do marketing?" But I answered, "Hey, right now I float the river professionally." But later, I thought I could dust off my marketing skills. A few months later, Eric approached me again and said, "Look. I'm working on this with a couple of friends [Lori Shandro Outen and Drew Lorona]. Do you want to be part of the team?" And I said, "Sounds great." And the very first Treefort was six months later. And now here we are, ready for the ninth Treefort, with no fewer than 441 bands or performers on the schedule. Additionally, you now have a total of nine ancillary "forts"— Alefort, Comedyfort, Filmfort, Foodfort, Hackfort, Kidfort, Skatefort, Storyfort and Yogafort. How…

Reema Zaman's "shared memoir," I Am Yours, will be the topic of her talk at Storyfort Over millennia, men have developed an entire language geared toward silencing women, its dictionary filled with words like "crazy," "bitter," "resentful" and many others that brush away women's feelings as particular to a weaker, less self-controlled sex. If there is a throughline in Reema Zaman's memoir, I Am Yours (Amberjack Publishing, 2019), it's the constant, teetering-on-ironic tension between that language and its use to silence an intensely strong woman. "Chup!," her father yelled when a young Zaman balked at his plan to arrange her marriage. (That's Bengali for "silence.") "Don't talk so much," her husband said to her much later in life. "I love you, but it's arrogant to think people want to hear your opinion." (She later left him.) Zaman will speak at Storyfort on Friday, March 22, and the outline of her life is superficially the born-out promise of liberalism and multiculturalism. The product of an arranged marriage herself, she was born in Bangladesh to educated, professional parents, and has lived all over the map—Thailand, Hawaii, Oregon, New York. She attended elite schools and has simultaneously pursued several careers as an actress, artist, educator, model, public speaker and writer. Much of the content of her book, however, shows the ways forces from outside and within threatened to collapse her promise. Her biological father, a flawed but loving man, flirted with disowning his daughter for supporting her mother in their divorce, though he frequently appeared to be more worried about what his peers would say about him as a divorcee than the prospect of being alone. For years, she struggled with an eating disorder. In high school, she was stalked by her psychology teacher. He sent her handwritten messages in red ink, the letters in all caps. He called her on the phone. "You're a naughty girl," he would say. She reported the teacher's behavior to the principal, who confiscated her evidence of the teacher's wrongdoing. A Narratively blog post she later wrote on the subject was picked up by The Guardian, and triggered an international investigation into coverups of misconduct at the school. Some reviews and advance media regarding I Am Yours have painted Zaman's memoir as part of a healing process. Prior to the February release of the book, Zaman told Ms. that she had continued to tweak the manuscript in light of her reflections on the election of President Donald Trump, the #MeToo movement and,…

Three "books," including Salome Mwangi, will be available for "check out"—for attendees to hear stories with controversial themes straight from the lips of the people who lived them. In the early 2000s, Salome "Sally" Mwangi lived in Nairobi, Kenya, with her then-husband, an Ethiopian political refugee. Being in the city, she said, was in some ways more dangerous than living in a refugee camp: Her husband was in the country legally, but he risked arrest—or worse. When he sought asylum in the United States, Mwangi accompanied him through the refugee immigration process. Their shared adventure is decidedly gripping, but Mwangi chose a different part of her life to highlight for her Human Library "book," entitled Write Your Own Obituary—one just as engrossing. "[When my father] was 8 or 10 years old, he fell sick. My grandmother thought he was going to die. Since they didn't bury people then, my grandmother, as evening approached, took him out of the gate. She was sure that during the night he would die, and the wild animals from around the forest would dispose of his body," she said. Her father didn't die, but Mwangi noted how "detached from death" her own culture was. Years later, after the death of a colleague from another part of Kenya, she would also note how mourners cried over and spoke to his body in its open casket. "My book tells the story of death in my culture and death in the Luo culture, and how they deal with it," she said. "Even though we're both from Kenya, we deal with it in almost polar-opposite ways, where one is cold and detached, and the other is celebrating the life of the loved one." As a book in The Human Library, Mwangi herself will be the text at Storyfort on Friday and Saturday, March 22 and 23, from 3-7 p.m. and 1-5 p.m., respectively. Three "books," including Mwangi, will be available for "check out"—for attendees to hear stories with controversial themes straight from the lips of the people who lived them. At Storyfort, Mwangi, Caitie Fredrickson and Shadi Ismail will present their stories in chapter form. Many of those stories involve prejudice and discrimination. "I think Idaho is misunderstood as being homogenous, or that there's a majority. The diversity is there, it just needs to be highlighted and given an opportunity to have a valid seat at the table," said Dani Elizabeth, a program specialist for the Meridian Library District and an organizer of The Human Library. "I know that there's prejudice in communities, and there are misunderstandings…

Hackfort: Decoding Treefort's Tech Branch      Cache   Translate Page
In 2019, Hackfort still believes in people. As technology infiltrates every corner of our lives, our relationship with our gadgets appears increasingly adversarial. Social media steals our information, phones cost a month's rent and email triggers headaches. It begs the question: Why did we create all of this in the first place? Luckily, Hackfort will descend on Jack's Urban Meeting Place (JUMP) from Thursday, March 21, through Saturday, March 23, to help people remember what they love about technology. This isn't just another tech conference. "Hackfort's not about the really technical, nitty-gritty developer engineer stuff," said Hackfort Marketing Director Mike Taylor. "It's more open to people who are excited about technology." Hackfort's focus on the culture around tech meshes perfectly with Treefort's larger emphasis on inclusion and community. "It's an all-ages event, and that is unusual," said Chelsea Smith, Hackfort's community and events manager. "We're not just appealing to one demographic with Treefort. It's a gathering place for anybody who loves to celebrate arts and culture." Boasting more than 30 events in three days, it's not an exaggeration to say Hackfort has something for every visitor. Between events, people can visit Hackfort's Expo Hall to play games with their friends and experience the latest innovations up close. Here are just a few of the highlights (find a full schedule here): Thursday (1-7:30 p.m.) At 3 p.m. in JUMP's Inspire Studio, Scott Campbell will tell the story of building his premium illuminated headwear brand LUMATIV, and you might be able to snag a custom light-up Treefort hat that you can rock for the rest of the fest. Then at 4 p.m. in the JUMP Room, advertising legend Chad Rea will teach how to unleash your creativity and avoid being a "dull, unoriginal hack."           Yogafort: Aligning With the 'Heart Chakra' of Treefort      Cache   Translate Page
Yogafort organizers debunk common myths about Boise's good-vibes-only yoga festival. When Treefort 2019 kicks off on Wednesday, March 20, it won't just welcome over 400 musicians you've never heard of—and two that you have. Branching off the Treefort lineup is Yogafort, a three-day event starting Friday, March 22, that gives festival-goers a place to reconnect and discover the "absolute awesomeness" that is yoga mixed with music. In preparation for the event, Yogafort co-founders Marisa Weppner and Celeste Bolin sat down with Boise Weekly to talk inclusivity in yoga and debunk the myths that keep potential yogis from stepping onto the mat. Myth: You have to go to Treefort to go to Yogafort While Yogafort is part of the Treefort camp (alongside Alefort, Comedyfort, Filmfort, Foodfort, Hackfort, Kidfort, Skatefort, Storyfort and more), Weppner and Bolin said Yogafort is its own event. Attendees need not have set foot in a Treefort venue or even a yoga studio to partake. "Yogafort is unique because it's self-contained," said Weppner. "But at the same time, we see Yogafort as the heart chakra of Treefort. We're anchored in love and joy and feel-good vibes that we send out to the rest of the festival." Bolin agreed, and said Yogafort, for many, is a soft introduction to Treefort. "As soon as you step into Yogafort, you might go, 'Oh, it doesn't matter at all how I participate, physically. I'm just showing up, and everyone is really friendly.' And there have been lots of converts from that who then go all-in with Treefort," she said. That's because Yogafort was designed for all ages, abilities, body types and skill levels. And while comfortable attire is encouraged, there are few limitations on how to experience the event (much like Treefort itself). Recalling years past, Weppner and Bolin said they have seen beginner yogis and enlightened gurus practice alongside yogis in costume, enthusiasts covered in glitter, and musicians and concertgoers still in band tees and skintight jeans. Yogafort also offers people who've never practiced yoga a chance to try something new. "Come one, come all," Weppner said. "Whereas going to a yoga studio or class for the first time might feel stuffy or serious, a yoga class at a festival is fun and playful, and there's never an air of 'Am I good enough to be here?'" Myth: Your spirituality is measured by 'how flexible your hips are' Yoga is anything that brings together the mind, body and spirit. Essentially,…

Send your question by clicking here.…
Mint Oreo Cookie Bark      Cache   Translate Page
Printed Recipe

Ingredients
  • ~15 Oreos
  • 24 oz White Vanilla Chips
  • 1/2 to 1 t. Mint Extract (to taste)
  • 2-3 drops Green Food Coloring
Cooking Directions
  1. Crush the Oreos. I just put them in a ziploc bag and use my rolling pin. You want a blend of crumbs and cookie chunks.
  2. Melt the chips. I just put them in a pan on the stove and melt them on low, stirring constantly. Once melted, add the food coloring and extract along with the crushed cookies. Mix well.
  3. Spread onto a wax paper lined cookie sheet. Your call as to how thick or how thin you want the bark.
  4. Stick the pan in the fridge for about an hour or until hard. Break the bark into pieces and enjoy.
Holly's Note:
We have a favorite chocolate store that is in Boise. We don't get over there as often as my boys would like, but when we do, they love the Mint Oreo Cookie Bark. The Boy got the bright idea to make our own. I looked around the Internets and found several recipes that were all similar. Most recipes called for 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of extract, I used 1 full teaspoon.

These were a hit. The boys said they were perfect and just like the ones at their favorite chocolate store.

Filmfort has found fresh digs at the new Hilton Garden Inn at the foot of the Boise Connector. Filmfort is on the move (again). Now in its sixth year and with nearly as many homes, the 2019 edition of Filmfort has found fresh digs at the new Hilton Garden Inn at the foot of the Boise Connector. True, the recently opened Hilton isn't exactly a mecca for cinephiles. That said, the hotel's location at 13th and Front streets is appropriately close to many music venues, allowing Treeforters to pop in to see a flick between concerts. Filmfort will also screen a handful of films in the even kitschier basement of Eighth Street's Red Feather Lounge. An all-admission pass costs $30. Thursday, March 21 Ham on Rye, 7 p.m., Hilton Garden Inn Director Tyler Taormina will be on hand to talk about his film, which celebrates the innocence of youth and explores how it often collides with the bleak realities of adulthood.

How…
Storyfort: The One and Only      Cache   Translate Page

There are loads of other features, from exploring related hashtags with ease to tuning in to Radio Boise and getting the latest on individual forts and volunteer opportunities.
Then at 4 p.m. in the JUMP Room, advertising legend Chad Rea will teach how to unleash your creativity and avoid being a "dull, unoriginal hack." Friday (10 a.m.-7 p.m.) At 11 a.m. in JUMP's Inspire Studio, robotics engineer and Stanford instructor Mikey Siegel will use technology to hack human consciousness and enhance the mind.           Yogafort: Aligning With the 'Heart Chakra' of Treefort      Cache   Translate Page

Fifty people, including actresses Felicity Huffman, Lori Loughlin and fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli, are accused in a scheme to buy spots at Stanford, Yale and other competitive universities in what federal prosecutors call "the largest college admissions scam ever prosecuted by the Department of Justice." The Mercury News reports that at athletic coach at Stanford has already pleaded guilty to accepting bribes and falsely portraying would-be students as competitive athletes. Kuna voters have approved a renewal of a $2.5 million, two-year levy to help pay for textbooks, computers and 20 additional educators. Bonds/levies will also approved by voters in the Vallivue, Wilder and New Plymouth school districts. But voters in the Payette Joint School District rejected a $30.9 million bond. The initiative lost by 14 votes. The Boise State women's basketball team was victorious Tuesday night, defeating Fresno State 89-77 in the Mountain West Conference tournament in Las Vegas. The Lady Broncos will take on Wyoming in the championship game, which tips off at 8 p.m. and will be televised on the CBS Sports Network. California Governor Gavin Newsom is expected to announce today that his state will place a moratorium on executions. The Sacramento Bee reports that the change will grant a temporary reprieve for 737 inmates on the largest death row in the Western hemisphere. The New York Times reports that President Trump's former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, faces up to 10 years in prison when he's sentenced today for conspiracy. The head of NASA doesn't know exactly when it may happen, but he told NPR's Science Friday program that it's "likely" that the first person on Mars will be a woman. The BBC has a bizarre story from rural France, where a group of chickens reportedly ganged up and killed a fox. The Gros-Chene farm in Brittany is home to about 6,000 free-range chickens. …

Gender Reveal Party Planned for Zoo Boise's Newborn Anteater      Cache   Translate Page
The party starts at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 16. Zoo Boise has announced its latest addition: a baby anteater. The baby was born in January, and as spring break approaches and the weather warms, Zoo Boise has prepared it and its mother, Gloria, for their public debut, which will take place on Saturday, March 16, at 3 p.m. That debut will include a specially constructed exhibit space near the carousel—the primary anteater exhibit space is undergoing renovations—and a gender reveal party. This isn't the first time Zoo Boise has thrown a shindig like this for one of its animals. Three years ago, it held a gender reveal party for one of its penguin chicks, when the chick's mother played with colored objects in the penguin pool to "reveal" its baby's gender. Something similar will be at play on Saturday, and Zoo Boise Assistant Director Liz Littman said staff are considering using one of the anteaters' favorite foods as a prop. "There might be some colored yogurt that reveals itself," she said. Littman said she will be on hand at the Saturday party to answer any questions regarding the newborn. The baby anteater's father is McCauley, who was paired with Gloria through the Species Survival Plan. According to Zoo Boise, this is McCauley's second baby and Gloria's third. The gestational period for anteaters is approximately six months. …

Meet the High School Students Behind Boise's Upcoming Youth Climate Strike      Cache   Translate Page
The Youth Climate Strike will take place in Boise on Friday, March 15, from 10 a.m.-noon on the steps of the Idaho Statehouse. At 16 and 18 years old, respectively, Boise high school students Liam Neupert and Elise Malterre have already put more thought into their environmental impact than many adults. Neupert, a junior at the local student-directed high school One Stone, sticks to a vegan diet, carries his own reusable silverware and tries to grocery shop without plastic, all with an eye toward his carbon footprint. Malterre, a senior at the same school, has traveled worldwide and participated in Model United Nations conferences to study environmental health. They're both working toward a greener future, but they said looming over these positive changes is a global problem: climate change. And it's an issue that isn't getting much traction at the Idaho Statehouse. "We were just at the informational hearing about climate change in Idaho the other day, and it's overwhelmingly frustrating to listen to our legislators asking questions about climate change," said Malterre. "Like, someone asked if climate change meant that the planet was warming or cooling after we'd watched a time-lapse [video] about the planet warming, like over 100 years turning completely orange. And then that question was asked a few minutes later." To raise awareness for those issues and incite movement on environmental issues at a governmental level, Neupert spearheaded the organization of a Boise Youth Climate Strike that will take place on the Idaho Statehouse steps Friday, March 15, from 10 a.m.-noon. The strike is part of a global movement under the umbrella of Fridays for Future, an initiative started by 15-year-old Swedish student Greta Thunberg. Beginning in August 2018, Thunberg has camped out in front of the Swedish parliament every Friday and will continue to do so, the Fridays for Future website reads, "until the Swedish policies provided a safe pathway well under [2 degrees Celsius], i.e. in line with the Paris agreement." Students all over the world have followed suit, including Neupert, Malterre and their friends, who have made the pilgrimage to the Idaho Statehouse steps with cardboard signs every Friday for the last three weeks. Fridays for Future has declared a Global Climate Strike for Future on March 15, making Neupert and Matlerre's strike one of 1,325 gatherings in 98 countries as of last night, according to a tweet from Thunberg. The March 15 strike in Boise, which Neupert organized in just a few weeks with help from a national Youth Climate Strike organization, will include six student speakers (Malterre…

Boise author Anthony Doerr's All The Light We Cannot See is among the most celebrated works by an Idaho writer. Boise author Anthony Doerr's All The Light We Cannot See (Scribner 2014) is among the most celebrated works by an Idaho writer, having won the Pulitzer Prize, an Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction and spent 130 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. Now, Deadline reports, it could become a Netflix limited series. Filming rights to the immensely popular book were bought by 21 Laps, a creature of Canadian producer, actor and director Shawn Levy, whose production credits also include Netflix's Stranger Things, Arrival, the Night at the Museum series and more. 21 Laps has a production deal with Netflix, and All The Light was brought into the fold by Levy's partner, Dan Levine. All The Light We Cannot See is the intertwined stories of Werner, a young German soldier with a gift for radio engineering; and a blind Parisian Marie-Laure, both of whom are trying to survive World War II in a French seaside town.…

Napoleon; construction engineer: Thuiller.
A STORY
Fort Liédot was built between 1810 and 1834 as part of a fortification complex designed to protect the bay and
the arsenal of Rochefort. The decision of its construction was taken by Napoleon in 1808 who wanted a strong "indestructible and
impregnable ". After 24 years of work, the fort will never hold its military role of protecting the coast, overtaken by
progress of the artillery. Between 1854 and 1870, it was transformed into a place of detention for military prisoners and later
communards and is used as a target for a series of artillery fire drill by the French Army. During the twentieth
century, the fort welcomes new political prisoners, including the future president of the Algerian Republic, Ahmed Ben
Bella. After having been used as a summer camp center, the fort was acquired by the Conservatoire du littoral in 1989.
AN ARCHITECTURE
The fort is a building with a square plan of about 90 meters on each side, completed at each corner by a bastion and entirely vaulted, to
Bomb proof thanks to a thick embankment of earth. The interior consists of a place of weapon of about 30 meters of side,
formed by curtains containing four casemates. Each bastion also includes casemates allowing the fort
to welcome more than 500 men. The curtains are accessed by a staircase with two ramps located on both sides of the entrance.
Fort Liédot is a very beautiful witness of bastioned and fortified military architecture of the 19th century. This is the only example
of model redoubt No. 1-1811 to have been built in France. Its architecture testifies to a high quality and mastery of the
size of the stones, mounted almost with joined joints.
A SITE - COASTAL VALUES
Located on the island of Aix, Fort Liédot is closely linked to the coast because its location is determined by the need to
monitor the coastal area including the Fougères Cove and the eastern tip of the island on the side of Coupedont.
However, the fort gradually lost its visual link with the coastline: nowadays, it is entirely surrounded by a forest of
green oaks, only significant afforestation on the island.
Getting there: Sea link to the island of Aix in 20 minutes from the Pointe de la Fumée in Fouras.
Open to the public: Guided tours are organized every day during the summer season and on Wednesdays from April to June and in September.

FORT LIEDOT
