Meet the pharmacy quietly powering hot startups like Hims and Nurx that ship Viagra and birth-control pills straight to your door      Cache   Translate Page

Truepill cofounders Umar Afridi and Sid Viswanathan

  • Meet Truepill, the pharmacy startup that has been quietly powering companies that prescribe and ship Viagra and birth control to customers' doors.
  • The startup, which describes itself as a "pharmacy API and fulfillment service," works with companies like Hims, Nurx, and Lemonaid by filling prescriptions and sending them out around the US.
  • With $14 million in funding from investors led by Alexis Ohanian's Initialized Capital, Truepill is plotting its international expansion.

Seemingly overnight, a crop of companies have sprung up that can prescribe and mail you medications like birth control and Viagra.

Each company has its own brand, its own website, and contracted doctors. But for many — including Lemonaid, the dermatology company YoDerm, Kick Health, Hims, and Nurx — there's a common thread: Their online pharmacies are powered by a little-known company called Truepill.

Founded by the pharmacist Umar Afridi and Sid Viswanathan, Truepill has quietly been gathering up pharmacy licenses across the US and amassing clients who have racked up hundreds of millions of dollars in funding. Since getting its start in 2016, Truepill has filled 1 million prescriptions.

Last year, Truepill raised $14 million from investors led by Alexis Ohanian's Initialized Capital. On Tuesday the company is formally announcing the funding, saying it'll use the money to expand internationally with plans to add facilities in New York, the UK, Australia, and Canada in addition to its center in San Mateo, California.

Afridi, Truepill's CEO, spent a decade working in retail pharmacies. Along the way, he started keeping track of some of the inefficiencies he saw as he filled prescriptions. In some instances, he'd have to use a fax machine to get a prescription from a particular doctor, with it difficult to get that doctor on the phone to check and see whether patients could use a lower-cost alternative.

The experience got Afridi interested in figuring out whether he could build an on-demand pharmacy. Eventually, the idea led him to start working on Truepill with Viswanathan, who serves as the company's president. While still doing shifts at CVS, Afridi was studying to become licensed in states across the US and started filling his first prescriptions in October 2016, shipping to homes in California for startups like Nurx and YoDerm.

Then in 2017, Afridi and Viswanathan joined the summer class of Y Combinator. Eventually, Afridi became licensed in more states and Truepill added more customers. The pharmacy is now licensed in 50 states.

A new kind of pharmacy

Viswanathan and Afridi don't consider Truepill an online pharmacy like PillPack, which Amazon acquired last year. Instead, they've coined the term "pharmacy API and fulfillment service." Truepill isn't trying to directly compete against retail pharmacies or other online pharmacies. Instead, it's the layer behind the scenes powering startups that are going the direct-to-consumer route by treating particular health conditions.

A company that uses Truepill can connect its website or app directly to Truepill's service. That way, when a patient is prescribed a medication like generic Viagra through the company's platform, the prescription gets sent over to Truepill. When a prescription comes in, Truepill fulfills it and ships it out that same day, Viswanathan said. The company can choose the speed of delivery based on how much it's willing to spend on shipping.

Read more: Trendy startup Hims wants to shake up men's health by prescribing generic Viagra online and is nearing a $1 billion valuation. But a move to relax guidelines has raised concerns among some of its doctor partners.

That company — which is charging the patient directly through its own site — pays Truepill for the cost of the prescription, the shipping, and then a service fee that's negotiated on top of that.

For startups looking to go directly to consumers by offering online doctor's visits and prescriptions that get sent to your door, Truepill isn't the only pharmacy option. Some startups have opted to build their own pharmacies, while others work with pharmacies similar to Truepill that have licenses to ship medication over the US.

The plan for Truepill's API and fulfillment service is to be as indispensable as Amazon Web Services is to companies. Because Truepill is focused on the pharmacy piece, the idea is that it might be able to get better rates for drugs based on volume and better shipping costs.

Eric Woersching, a general partner at Initialized, said that in addition to the size of the pharmacy industry (billions of prescriptions are written in the US every year), the firm was drawn to Truepill's API approach to pharmacy.

"As engineers and hackers ourselves, we understand how powerful the APIs can be," Woersching said. He pointed to financial technology companies like Stripe and Plaid that have cemented themselves in the payments field, with successful companies built on top of their APIs.

The changing way Americans get prescriptions

The healthcare industry as a whole has been jockeying to stay competitive as companies realize that patients, used to the consumer experience they're getting from Amazon and Netflix, have higher expectations for their doctor's visit.

That's been a driving force behind megadeals like Amazon's acquisition of PillPack and CVS Health's merger with Aetna. On-demand, convenient healthcare options like urgent care and free-standing emergency rooms have gained in popularity too, as have same-day pharmacy delivery services like Capsule and Alto.

Read more: We got an exclusive look at the 2019 plans for Capsule, a pharmacy startup that could be Amazon's next takeover target and has plans to go national

Mailing out prescriptions isn't a particularly new phenomenon. Pharmacy benefit managers such as CVS Caremark and the Cigna-owned Express Scripts have been shipping medication to patients for years as an alternative to monthly visits to a pharmacy.

For now, Truepill is focused on pharmacy fulfillment for startups like Hims or Nurx that are going directly to consumers. Eventually, Afridi said, the plan is to enter other lines of business as well, potentially working with PBMs to serve as their online, mail-order service or by tapping into the $140 billion specialty pharmacy market.

Viswanathan said the conversations with PBMs had surprised both the incumbents and the Truepill team.

"It's shocking to think about this, but something as trivial as being able to provide a shipping-tracking URL is something breakthrough in the space," Viswanathan told Business Insider.

They're not the only piece of the pharma supply chain to be surprised by Truepill's model. Afridi said he provided a wholesaler an estimate of what volume of medication Truepill expected to dispense. But when Truepill hit that estimate, the wholesaler stopped supplying the pharmacy, convinced that Truepill couldn't possibly have filled that many prescriptions.

"We tend to very quickly outpace the volume of what our stage of pharmacy can do," Viswanathan said.

Truepill now works directly with drugmakers as well as the wholesaler to get its medications. Because Truepill is working with clients that are focused in specific disease areas, the pharmacy's volumes for drugs like generic Viagra or birth control can be much higher than a typical pharmacy would dispense.

As more and more prescriptions go online via a direct-to-consumer delivery model, Viswanathan said he's excited to be powering that with Truepill.

"There are so many things that can and will happen in telemedicine," Viswanathan said.

Actress Felicity Huffman was released on a $250,000 bond and ordered to surrender her passport on Tuesday, following her arrest that resulted from the FBI's college-admissions investigation.

The "Desperate Housewives" and "American Crime" actress appeared in federal court in Los Angeles for around 12 minutes with her husband, actor William Macy, according to CBS News correspondent Steve Futterman.

Huffman's real estate assets were reportedly valued "in excess of $20 million," and the actress was estimated to have $4 million in immediate funds, according to prosecutors.

Huffman was among the nearly 50 people who were charged in the FBI's investigation of a massive bribery, money laundering, and document fabrication scheme designed to get students admitted to colleges. Court documents revealed that college athletic coaches were bribed and college entrance exams were doctored as part of the alleged scheme.

Huffman is accused of participating in the "cheating scheme on behalf of her eldest daughter" by making what was described as a "charitable contribution" of $15,000, according to the criminal complaint. Huffman is also accused of planning to make the same arrangement for her younger daughter before backing out.

Macy, the star of Showtime's "Shameless," was not indicted.

The Barbados International Business Association (BIBA) is mum on Barbados being named among ten governments added by the Council of the European Union, to the five already on its blacklist of non-cooperative tax jurisdictions.

When contacted this evening to give a comment on Barbados being included to the revised list, which also includes countries such as Aruba, Belize, and the United Arab Emirates, BIBA’s President Julia Hope told Barbados TODAY that the association would not be giving a comment at this time.

Efforts to reach Minister of International Business Ronald Toppin were unsuccessful.

However, a press statement from the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) stated that the Government was clueless about what it has been doing in relation to the international business sector.

The DLP said the recent blacklisting spells impending disaster for the country’s second highest foreign exchange earner and is just another example to Barbados that the Mia Mottley led administration does not know what it is doing.

The party is contending that Government has the largest cadre of financial advisors and economists supported by the public purse, and yet the country was no better off under them than with the previous administration they continue to vilify.

According to a statement from the Council, the jurisdictions named failed to implement commitments that they had made to the European Union by an agreed deadline.

The council also said it would continue to regularly review and update the list in the coming years to take into account evolving criteria and deadlines for jurisdictions to deliver on their commitments to improving tax governance.

“Today we completed our first comprehensive revision of the EU list of non-cooperative jurisdictions. Since it was first adopted in late 2017, the list has proven its worth in promoting forward in a cooperative manner the EU’s agenda of improving global tax practices, fighting tax avoidance and improving good governance and transparency”, Eugen Teodorovici, the minister of finance of Romania said, in a published statement.

Meanwhile, the DLP said that in January 2018 under the former Democratic Labour Party (DLP) Government, Barbados was removed from the EU blacklist of 17 jurisdictions.

According to the statement under this current regime, Barbados failed to implement commitments made to the European Union by the agreed deadline despite the fact that they lowered corporation taxes for local businesses with the explanation that they were complying with European Union edicts.

The release also indicated that Minister of International Business and Industry, Ronald Toppin, even boasted in November last year that Barbados was on track for OECD compliance.

“Today big businesses are laughing all the way to the bank while Barbados has been blacklisted. The Government must justify to taxpayers the employment of Clyde Mascoll, Chief Economic Counsellor, Ronald Toppin, Minister of International Business and Industry; Marsha Caddle, Minister of Economic Affairs and Investment, plus Avinash Persuad another Economic and Finance advisor who heads a slew of non-ministerial finance and economic consultants to the Mottley administration,” the statement read.

The DLP also noted that the International Business Sector in this country employs some 6 000 persons and is the leading foreign exchange earner after tourism.

“This is not the time for highly-paid technocrats to be bluffing their way through governance of this country,” the release also read.

Sodomy Laws in the US and around the World      Cache   Translate Page
A sodomy law is a law that defines certain sexual acts as crimes. The precise sexual acts meant by the term sodomy are rarely spelled out in the law, but are typically understood by courts to include any sexual act deemed to be "unnatural" or immoral. Sodomy typically includes anal sex, oral sex and bestiality. In practice, sodomy laws have rarely been enforced against heterosexual couples (Wikipedia)

Sodomy arrest sparks controversy… 34 years ago

Michael Hardwick is arrested for sodomy after a police officer observes him having sex with another man in his own bedroom in Georgia. Although the district attorney eventually dropped the charges, Hardwick decided to challenge the constitutionality of Georgia’s law.

“John and Mary Doe,” who joined in Hardwick’s suit against Michael Bowers, the attorney general of Georgia, maintained that the Georgia law “chilled and deterred” them from engaging in certain types of sex in their home. But in 1986, the Supreme Court handed down its decision in Bowers v. Hardwick, ruling by a 5-4 vote that states could continue to treat certain types of consensual sex as criminal acts.

Apparently, Justice Byron White had characterized the issue not as the right to privacy in one’s own bedroom, but rather as the right to commit sodomy. Viewed in this narrow manner, it was no surprise that he was unable to find such a clause in the Constitution. Justice Lewis Powell, who also voted to uphold the law, later called his vote a mistake.

In June 2003, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a Texas law under which two men had been arrested for having consensual sex at home. The 6-3 Lawrence v. Texas decision reversed the infamous 1986 Bowers decision and finally dealt a death blow to sodomy laws throughout the country.

In its landmark ruling Lawrence v. Texas, the Supreme Court ruled that anti-sodomy laws —sometimes referred to as “crimes against nature” laws — are unconstitutional. But 12 states continue to keep such laws on their books. Of 14 states that had anti-sodomy laws, only Montana and Virginia have repealed theirs since the Supreme Court ruling, while anti-sodomy laws remain on the books in Alabama, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas and Utah.

You may believe anti-sodomy laws are not harmful because they can’t be enforced. But they are an important symbol of homophobia for those who oppose LGBT rights. What’s more, the laws create ambiguity for police officers, who may not be aware they are unconstitutional.

If a policeman looks it up, he will see that sodomy is a violation of Louisiana state law, for example, according to Marjorie Esman, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana.

Sodomy Laws around the World

In the recent years, sodomy related laws have been repealed or judicially struck down in all of Europe, North America, and South America, except for Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago.

There have never been Western-style sodomy related laws in the People's Republic of China, Taiwan, North Korea, South Korea, or Vietnam. Additionally, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia were part of the French colony of 'Indochine'; so if there had been any laws against male homosexual acts in those countries, they would have been dismantled by French colonial authorities, since male homosexual acts have been legal in France and throughout the French Empire since the issuing of the aforementioned French Revolutionary penal code in 1791.

This trend among Western nations has not been followed in all other regions of the world (Africa, some parts of Asia, Oceania and even western countries in the Caribbean Islands), where sodomy often remains a serious crime. For example, male homosexual acts, at least in theory, can result in life imprisonment in Barbados and Guyana.

In Africa, male homosexual acts remain punishable by death in Mauritania, Sudan, and some parts of Nigeria and Somalia. Male and sometimes female homosexual acts are minor to major criminal offences in many other African countries; for example, life imprisonment is a prospective penalty in Sierra Leone, Tanzania and Uganda. A notable exception is South Africa, where same-sex marriage is legal.

In Asia, male homosexual acts remain punishable by death in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Brunei, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen; but anti-sodomy laws have been repealed in Israel (which recognizes but does not perform same-sex marriages), Japan, Kazakhstan, the Philippines, and Thailand. Additionally, life imprisonment is the formal penalty for male homosexual acts in Bangladesh, the Maldives, Myanmar, Pakistan, and Qatar.

Boeing and Brexit drama are hitting market sentiment (BA)      Cache   Translate Page

  • Boeing's shares were down 1.3% in pre-market trading after slumping 6% yesterday
  • Asian and European stocks and US futures lost ground after British Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit deal was resoundingly rejected by Parliament.
  • The British pound has swung between $1.33 and $1.30 this week as the Brexit drama has unfolded.

Shares in Boeing slid 1.3% in premarket trading on Wednesday after slumping 6% yesterday, as European and Indian regulators joined their peers in grounding Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft after the model was involved in two lethal crashes in the space of five months.

Asian stocks were down as traders reacted to global growth fears. The resounding defeat of British Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit deal in Parliament on Tuesday added to gloomy sentiment, leaving European shares broadly flat.

The pound pared its losses as currency traders were optimistic that the possibility that Britain crashes out of the EU without a deal looks more remote.

"This is all very messy — there is not clear and clean way out of this — leaving uncertainty and caution the order of the day for sterling and other UK assets," said Neil Wilson, chief markets analyst at markets.com.

Boeing

Boeing‘s stock has lost more than $40 billion of market value from its 2019 peak, with two days of selling wiping out $26 billion of market value. More than a dozen airlines as well as the governments of UK, China, Indonesia, Australia, and Singapore have grounded Boeing's 737 Max planes after the crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 on Sunday, which killed all 157 people on board.

Brexit drama

The British pound has swung between $1.33 and $1.30 this week as the mood keeps shifting.

Parliament will vote later today on whether to leave the EU with no deal. If the vote fails, lawmakers will vote Thursday on whether to extend the Brexit deadline on Thursday.

"We expect volatility in the pound to ease back today as it finds comfort in the prospect of avoiding a no deal and Article 50 being extended," said Jasper Lawler, head of research at London Capital Group.

Here's the roundup as of 8.50 a.m. (4.50 a.m. EST):

  • Asian stocks closed lower with the SZSE Component Index down 2.5%, the Shanghai Composite Index down 1.1%, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng down about 0.5%.
  • European markets are mixed with the the Euro Stoxx 50 up 0.25%, while the FTSE 100 and DAX are almost flat.
  • US stocks are also mixed with Dow futures down 0.05%, while S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures are trading slightly higher.

Facebook says Zero Hedge ban was a 'mistake' amid uproar over big tech censorship of conservative content      Cache   Translate Page

tyler durden fight club

  • Facebook has reversed its decision to block users from sharing content from anti-establishment financial blog Zero Hedge after appearing to ban the site earlier this week.
  • A backlash from figures including the President's son, Donald Trump Jr., Paul Joseph Watson, and Nigel Farage sparked reactions related to civil liberties surrounding conservative voices on social media.
  • The decision to ban the site came about after a "mistake" in spam filtering controls according to a Facebook statement.

Facebook said it made a "mistake" in banning content on its site from conservative, anti-establishment finance website Zero Hedge, after uproar from right-wing media figures claiming censorship.

Zero Hedge, which posts articles under the moniker Tyler Durden, a nod to the anarchic 1999 film "Fight Club," claimed its content was blocked by Facebook on Monday. Users reported that the site's posts were banned due to a contravention of "community standards."

"This was a mistake with our automation to detect spam and we worked to fix it yesterday," a Facebook spokesman said, according to Breitbart. "We use a combination of human review and automation to enforce our policies around spam and in this case, our automation incorrectly blocked this link. As soon as we identified the issue, we worked quickly to fix it," Breitbart cited Facebook as saying.

Right-wing commentators have accused social media sites of liberal bias, with companies such as Facebook and Twitter reportedly meeting with GOP officials in the past to address complaints around censorship. The President's son, Donald Trump Jr., Infowars writer Paul Joseph Watson, and Brexiteer Nigel Farage led the outrage on social media, claiming Facebook's Zero Hedge ban was a violation of civil liberties.

It's unclear exactly which content caused the ban on Zero Hedge material on Facebook's website which the social media giant calling it a glitch rather than an attempt to silence conservative voices.

In a statement, which Zero Hedge posted, Facebook said: "This was a mistake with our automation to detect spam and we worked to fix it yesterday."

In a piece on its website Zero Hedge said: "While we were in the dark about what had triggered Facebook, or what was the company's motive, we were humbled and delighted not only with the media coverage this event received."

Zero Hedge is a favorite of City and Wall Street traders, known for its anti-establishment and bearish slant on financial topics. Zero Hedge authors have railed against a variety of issues, most famously their takedown of Goldman Sach's high-frequency trading platforms, which were later addressed by US regulators.

The founder of the site was outed in 2009 as Bulgarian immigrant Dan Ivandjiiski, a man whom New York Magazine alleged has with a penchant for conspiracy theories and was banned from working in the brokerage business for insider trading.

Facebook did not immediately respond to Business Insider requests for comment.

http://jumpingjackflashhypothesis.blogspot.com/2012/02/jumping-jack-flash-hypothesis-its-gas.html

The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

Emirati Arabi, Aruba, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Dominica, Fiji, Isole Marshall, Oman e Vanuatu.

Microsoft just announced three new products that could help make it the guaranteed winner of an $8 billion Pentagon contract (MSFT)      Cache   Translate Page

Satya Nadella

  • On Wednesday, Microsoft announced that Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Power Platform and Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement will have versions made available for government use, and have been certified with higher government security certifications.
  • These products are poised to help Microsoft in the bid for the Defense Enterprise Office Solutions contract, an $8 billion contract with the Department of Defense to help modernize its office and messaging software.
  • Microsoft says it's still on track to achieve a certification for its Microsoft Azure cloud handle data of the highest impact level by the end of the first quarter of 2019.

Analysts say Microsoft is already the shoo-in to win an $8 billion contract with the Department of Defense. Now, it's released three new products for government use to reinforce its position.

Right now, Microsoft is bidding for the Defense Enterprise Office Solutions (DEOS) contract, via its reseller partners. This contract aims to help Department of Defense modernize its productivity software, which includes email, messaging, video chat, and the like. While Google offers similar services, Microsoft is the favorite to win.

On Wednesday, it announced new versions of Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Power Platform, and Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement — all ready for government use, complete with certification for data at higher government security levels. These could all sweeten the pot when it comes to DEOS.

Currently, analysts say Microsoft is the only company with products that fit the requirements of this contract — and that winning would only expand Microsoft's existing ongoing relationship with the government.

"What I can say is we've been working with the DOD for 40 plus years and have had a great partnership helping them with productivity and collaboration," Susie Adams, CTO of Microsoft Federal, told Business Insider. "We're now able to provide the innovations that are proven and secure to meet the DOD missions. We look forward to competing with DEOS."

The new products

Microsoft Teams, its instant messaging app, is now available to run on all government clouds, include that of the DoD. Microsoft also announced Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement for Government, software to help government users interact with their customers, which will be available in April.

Microsoft Power Platform, which helps people create custom applications and analyze data without writing code, will be available for government use this spring, says Microsoft.

These products were previously available to commercial customers, but now Microsoft has made them suitable for government use by ramping up its security certifications.

"What I can say is we're excited about the tools we've developed through the innovative work we've done to modernize collaboration and productivity," Adams said. "They're proven products that have secure technology built them into them."

Ramping up government certifications

Notably, Microsoft Power Platform is certified at FedRAMP High, the highest government security authorization, which allows this product to handle sensitive data from users in fields including law enforcement, emergency services, financial systems and health systems.

Both Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement for Government and Microsoft Teams can handle data at Impact Level 4, which means they can handle controlled unclassified information, like protected health information.

"We're committed to making sure the features and capabilities we deliver to our commercial customers, we also deliver to our government customers," Adams said.

All three of these products directly map to what DEOS is asking for in its request for bids — and, notably, Google, the only other major prospective competitor, lacks many of the necessary security certifications at the moment.

Adams declined to comment on the view that Microsoft is the only product suite that can win DEOS, but did say that these new products help it better serve government customers.

"We're excited because we do have Teams and these new capabilities," Adams said. "I don't think we can comment on whether anyone else can meet the requirements."

The bigger cloud picture

The highest security certification a company can achieve is impact level 6.

Right now, only Amazon Web Services has achieved that distinction for any of its products, but Microsoft says it's on track to achieve this certification for Azure Government Secret, its government cloud, by the end of the first quarter of 2019. That would allow Microsoft Azure handle secret classified data.

That, in turn, would boost Microsoft's place in the race for another, far more competitive Pentagon contract — the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI) contract, a $10 billion deal for which Amazon and Microsoft are duking it out.

Adams noted that Wednesday's news doesn't have much to do with JEDI, but said that there's more to come from Microsoft on the government technology front.

"We're continuing to take the innovations that we're delivering on a continual basis. We're not selling down as a company," Adams said.

Investing app Stash just rolled out a new debit-card rewards program that gives customers a stake in the companies they shop at      Cache   Translate Page

Brandon Krieg Stash Headshot

  • Stash, a micro-investing app, is rolling out a "Stock-Back" program that rewards its debit-card holders with fractional shares of stock in companies they've shopped at.
  • "Tonight, you go to Olive Garden to have a dinner, and when you pay your bill, you are going to become the Olive Garden shareholder," Brandon Krieg, cofounder and CEO of Stash, told Business Insider.

Shoppers in the US are used to receiving rewards like cash, points, or extra miles on their credit card purchases. But what about a card that gives you shares in your favorite brands?

Stash, best known as a micro-investing app, is offering a new spin on a customers reward program. The company announced earlier this week a first-of-its-kind debit-card rewards program awarding customers fractional shares of stock in companies they've shopped at.

The program, named "Stock-Back," aims to turn American consumers into shareholders and save them from a mounting pile of credit card debt, according to Brandon Krieg, cofounder and CEO of Stash.

"We hope to help our clients live better financial lives, increase their financial health, and at the same time, become shareholders everywhere they spent money," Krieg said. "It really helps promote better financial behavior and get people away from going further and further into debt through their credit cards.

See more: SoFi held talks to acquire a fintech company backing some of the hottest robo advisors as it eyes expansion beyond its lending roots

Founded in 2015, Stash aims to change how people engage with financial services and empower those who lack knowledge of investments and wealth management. It has lowered investing hurdles for the non-rich by enabling investors to open an investment account with as little as $5.  Last year, the company expanded into banking through its partnership with Green Dot Corporation and it now offers an FDIC-insured bank account.

The new "Stock-Back" offering is an add-on to those existing features and part of an effort to integrate investing with banking, Krieg said.

So how does it work?

First, you need to own both a debit account and a brokerage account with Stash. Then when you make a purchase using the Stash debit card, the company will put a certain percentage of the dollar amount that you spend into your brokerage account and use the money to buy the fractional stock of the vendors you just shopped at, or its parent company.

See more: Main Street banks say fintechs like Monzo, N26 and Chime pose the biggest disruptive threat to their businesses — and they're fighting back

If Stash can't match the stock on its platform, say if the vendor is a local retail outlet that is not publicly listed or its stock is not currently offered by Stash, you will get a fractional share of the Vanguard Total World Stock ETF. Stash said it offers over 200 stocks - of which many are consumer-facing brands, including Amazon, Alibaba, Chipotle, McDonald's, and more - on its platform.

Right now, the "Stock-Back" program offers a 12.5 basis points reward on each purchase, but transactions at certain merchants allow higher rates. If you buy a subscription to Netflix and Spotify, the earning rate is 5%, while a purchase of a coffee at Starbucks or Dunkin earns 2%, according to Krieg.

That means that if you spend about $144 dollars a year on your Netflix subscription, you'll get about $7.20 dollars of Netflix’s stock. Cardholders cannot forgo the investment in a single stock unless they opt out the entire reward program.

As Krieg put it, "Tonight, you go to Olive Garden to have a dinner, and when you pay your bill, you are going to become the Olive Garden shareholder."

See also: A fintech firm backing hot robo advisors like Betterment and Stash is planning to launch crypto custody services within the next few months

While a 0.125% reward appears to be teeny-tiny, the fact that cardholders will gain shares makes it better than rewards based on points in many respects, Krieg said.

“Points go down in value, points deflate, and points expire," he said. "Stock of good quality companies over time historically goes up, and that’s the most powerful context. And remember one other thing: As you build positions in stocks on Stash, you get dividends on your holdings. That’s the gift that keeps giving you dividends."

The upstart just racked in $65 million in its Series E funding round closed in February. The investment was led by an undisclosed private institutional investor, with participation from new and existing investors. The company refused to disclose its valuation. It raised at $350 million as of its last round led by Union Square Ventures last February, according to PitchBook.

'Significant controversy' still surrounds Apple as investors debate whether it's safe to jump back in (AAPL)      Cache   Translate Page

Tim Cook

  • After upgrading Apple to "buy" from "neutral" earlier this week, Bank of America Merrill Lynch spoke with clients about the tech giant.
  • The bank says investors are "grappling with when to get back in the stock," and highlighted the stark division between Apple's bulls and bears.
  • Apple has staged quite a comeback from its recent lows — along with the broader market — but shares are still 23% below October's record high.
  • Watch Apple trade live.

Investors are deeply divided over where to stand on Apple.

That's what Bank of America Merrill Lynch took away from conversations with clients this week after upgrading the stock from "neutral" to "buy."

"Significant controversy remains over Apple's long-term trajectory," analysts led by Wamsi Mohan wrote in a note out Tuesday. "Most investors agree that Apple remains a hardware story, and while Services continue to grow double digits y/y, the majority of gross profit dollars would continue to come from hardware in the next few years."

Apple shares plunged by as much as 40% from October's all-time high, putting in a bottom at $142 a share on January 3 after the company warned investors its revenue would be weaker than expected due primarily to sluggish iPhone sales in China. Since then, the stock has rallied 27%, but is still trading 23% off its $233.47 peak.

Some analysts aren't convinced the worst is over for the iPhone, which makes up 63% of Apple's total revenue. HSBC found in a survey last month that wealthy Chinese consumers are shifting away from Apple in favor of competitors like Huawei and Samsung. The firm reiterated its "neutral" rating on the stock, which it's held since early December.

Meanwhile, Bank of America, which also hiked its price target earlier this week, from $180 to $210, laid out the key arguments from Apple bulls and bears.

The bulls point to their belief that Apple's negative estimate revisions are likely in the past and that the stock's valuation is compelling at 15 times forward earnings. They're also encouraged by Apple's robust free cash flow yield and the prospect of a trade deal with China boosting the stock.

On the other hand, Apple bears argue the company lacks innovation and faces competition from lower-priced phone manufacturers as it battles for smartphone market share. At the same time, an elongated replacement cycle remains a headwind.

Apple is expected to unveil a long-speculated video-streaming service and subscription news service later this month at a special event in California.

Dorothea Shaw is 71 years old and nearly blind, and when she chose to live alone far away from people, she went about as far as it is possible to go to escape humanity. She lives in Belize - a country the size of Waleswith a population only that of Swansea. Her home is at Gales Point, a tiny village which can be reached only by sea or air; after a ten-mile walk into the hills one finally reaches a plot of land and two small huts so hidden in the thick over-grown forest that only a handful of people know Dorothea is there.

She lives happily and totally alone - growing her vegetables, looking after her trees and dogs, cats and chickens. Once a month or so an old friend passes by with her food supplies and mail - usually including a letter from her sister in Scunthorpe and some bits of clothing from friends in Canada. Sometimes a local man will come and chop wood for her and the occasional group of British soldiers will come across her and be greeted with the offer of a cup of coffee.

At night she lies in her tiny sleeping hut with the dogs on the floor, the cats on the table near the typewriter and one of the hens settled down in the corner of the packet bookshelf, and listens for hours to any Spanish, English, German or French broadcasts she can find on her radio. Sometimes she gets lonely but most of the time the animals and the radio are company enough.

But recently the very things which she had escaped from and hidden from so well have begun to catch up with her. The peace of the forest has been destroyed by the roar of earth-moving machines not many miles away. Humanity and the 20 th
century, once only heard of distantly on the radio, are now on her doorstep. Things began to change three years ago. The new main north-south highway in Belizewas cut through the forest only four or five miles away. "Now more and more people know I'm here," she says, "I feel more threatened each day".

The EU has branded as "tax-havens" the Dutch Caribbean island of Aruba, Barbados, Belize, the British overseas territory of Bermuda, Fiji, the Marshall Islands, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Vanuatu, and Dominica in a decision by finance ministers in Brussels Wednesday, the Reuters news agency reported. The 10 jurisdictions joined Samoa, Trinidad and Tobago, and US territories American Samoa, Guam, and the US Virgin Islands, which had been blacklisted earlier.

Brookfield is buying Oaktree and it could create 'a more formidable competitor' to Blackstone in the asset management industry      Cache   Translate Page

howard marks

  • One of the world's biggest investment firms, Brookfield Asset Management, announced a record deal to buy a majority stake in, and eventually take over, Howard Marks' Oaktree Capital Management, in a $4.7 billion deal.
  • The mega-deal means the combined firms' capital will just slightly exceed Blackstone's assets.
  • "It would be a much more formidable competitor" to Blackstone, one analyst said.

One of the world's largest asset managers is set to get a lot bigger.

On Tuesday, Toronto-based Brookfield Asset Management said it would buy a 62% stake in Los Angeles-based Oaktree Capital Management, the alternatives manager founded by Howard Marks and Bruce Karsh in a $4.7 billion cash and stock deal. By 2029, Brookfield could own all of Oaktree.

The combined companies would have $475 billion of assets under management. Blackstone, the largest asset manager, had $474 billion as of year-end. A Blackstone spokesman said the numbers were not comparable because of differing methodologies.

"It’s one of those deals that doesn’t come along that often," Patrick Davitt, a research analyst at Autonomous Research, told Business Insider. "It would be a much more formidable entity with a much better developed credit arm and start to look a lot more like Blackstone. From the standpoint of becoming a one-stop shop for limited partners, they're probably going to be close to the second-best gig in town next to Blackstone."

While Oaktree manages a variety of alternatives strategies – private equity, real estate, and infrastructure – it's best known for its credit arm, which Brookfield chief executive Bruce Flatt praised as "second to none" and "one of the finest credit platforms in the world" in a statement. Brookfield, meanwhile, is best known for its real estate and infrastructure investing.

"It makes sense for two niche firms like that to expand on their operations, to combine their businesses to have stronger footing in the alternative asset management business," Tayfun Icten, a Morningstar analyst, said in an interview.

However, he cautioned that mergers, particularly those in asset management, "are tough."

"Your assets get into an elevator and go home every night – the people," Icten said. "Cultural fit is crucial in situations like this. It’ll never be perfect. It can work but it’s a painful process to mesh two teams together. The good news is it sounds like they’ll operate pretty independently, though it’s hard to say what Howard Marks’ long-term goals are here."

The deal is expected to close in the third quarter. Once Oaktree is no longer public, Autonomous's Davitt noted that management can focus just on investing and expanding, not on the management of a public company.

"Brookfield has a lot more capital to help Oaktree grow to the extent it wants to, which is something it didn’t have before," he said.

Icten contrasted the deal with other asset management M&A, which has often involved one or more underperforming companies.

"This does not sound like a story of two weak players merging," he said. "This sounds like a story of these firms expanding on their platforms to become a stronger niche player in alternative investments."

Cboe's CEO is raising issues with moving the exchange to the cloud and it represents a break from Nasdaq      Cache   Translate Page

Traders trade VIX contracts at the Cboe Global Markets exchange (previously referred to as CBOE Holdings, Inc.) on December 19, 2017 in Chicago, Illinois. Last week the exchange became the first in the Unites States to begin trading Bitcoin futures. Bitcoin prices have surged in the past year, going from $1,000 a coin at the beginning of the year to a recent high of around $20,000. (Photo by )

  • Cboe Global Market's CEO Edward Tilly said he sees the benefit in moving the exchange's data to the cloud.
  • However, Tilly raised issue with moving the entire venue to the cloud, citing the tech's inability to keep up with the speed needed to match trades.
  • Nasdaq CEO Adena Friedman recently threw her support behind the cloud, and said she sees exchanges moving to the tech over the next next decade.

Exchanges, like banks and hedge funds, are among those on Wall Street starting to see the benefit of moving part of their operations to the public cloud. But venues migrating their entire infrastructure to the technology still seems like a pipe dream to some.

Edward Tilly, Cboe Global Markets CEO, told Business Insider in an interview that while he sees the benefit of moving his exchange group's data into the cloud, shifting other parts of the trading venue off premise could be a tough sell.

Specifically, he said moving the exchange's matching engine, which links buyers and sellers of assets, would be difficult.

"I scratch my head on matching. At this point, it seems very aspirational. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing," Tilly said. "Data, I totally get that. But matching, I think that might be a little bit of a stretch."

Nasdaq CEO Adena Friedman recently said she sees exchanges moving to the cloud over the course of the next decade. As a result, Friedman said the markets could operate more holistically as opposed to each exchange operating in their own data centers, separated from each other.

The issue with using the cloud to match trades lies in the speed at which the the remote servers could handle the orders. Cloud-based service has more latency than on-premise hardware, said Bryan Harkins, the co-head of markets division at Cboe.  In the stock market, where fractions of a second are the difference between millions of dollars in profits, the lag from using the cloud would be disruptive.

As for if Cboe has any plans in place to move data to the cloud, Tilly declined to comment beyond reiterating his belief in where he sees the potential benefits in data storage. Harkins added that the path towards using cloud technology around managing data is much clearer.

"Storage, yea, you can certainly cut out a lot of expenses by moving all of your data infrastructure to the cloud," Harkins said.

Travel Plans
We leave in 3 days.  Lists are made and being modified.  Clothes washed and packed.  Sermons and class lessons being printed out and downloaded to the iPad.  Travel details being poured over.  There is not a sense of panic, but there is a sense that this is an undertaking that is quite out of the norm from everyday life (<-understatement!).  Our family has travelled a lot in our lives, within the states, Mexico, Belize, Europe several times, Hawaii, Alaska... but this feels different.  First trip for Jake and I to Asia.  First airline trip for Luke.  First International flight for Matt.  Looking forward to this trip to meet up with our beloved Brother Ken Wilkey and press forward with the Gospel in the Philippines.

Our Itinerary as I understand it (Wilkey says to be Tough-Flexible-Optimistic, and we shall)

  • Friday 7/27 AUS to LAX - We saved $1000 with the overnight layover in LA! Nice 3 hour intro flight for Luke.
  • Saturday-Sunday LAX to TPE - arrive with a 10 hour layover in Taiwan.  Plans for checking out the markets in Taipei, Taiwan and hoping to meet and share the word with someone.
  • Sunday-Monday TPE to MNL- We arrive in Manila 9:30AM Monday morning.  We will be scooped up by Ken and begin our work.  We should be travel weary by then (12 Time Zones away from College Station), but looking forward to our first day in the World's most densely populated city of 15 million.
  • Monday-Wednesday meeting the brethren, classes, worship and whatever Ken has in store for us.
  • Wednesday-Monday - Fly to the North for our work in Ramon, Isabella, Luzon area.  Looking forward to sharing lessons on restoration to the first century and the pure water of the New Testament church to the people there.  Jake and Luke will have a beneficial role in the large youth gathering planned for the weekend.
  • Monday - Tuesday - Fly to Manila then boat from there to Cebu (overnight trip).  We will visit and work with the Murrell crew, and do whatever else Ken has in store for us.
  • Tuesday-Thursday - Cebu, maybe some work on Bilarian.
  • Friday - Fly Home MNL-TPE-LAX-AUS

This of course subject to change, but our team has the mindset to be ready for anything.  We pray for strength in the Lord and he provides.
